- 2:19Speaker 10: Eric chew hi there welcome back.
- 2:22Speaker 9: We need an applause wheel we we uh.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I i think reasonable facsimile i think at this point
- 2:30Speaker 2: we're just adopting you i i don't i don't know
- 2:32Speaker 2: that you want it but that's usually what seems to
- 2:34Speaker 2: be there's only a handful of guests we've adopted into
- 2:37Speaker 2: the fold, and you can fight it as much as
- 2:40Speaker 2: you want, as Daniel Harris has tried for years, but no,
- 2:43Speaker 2: we adopted her anyway, and you've fallen into that now.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So if you want some sort of prize to mark
- 2:50Speaker 2: this momentous occasion.
- 2:52Speaker 10: You can come claim a t-shirt or whatever you want.
- 2:54Speaker 10: But welcome back to the show, your second home.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 3:00Speaker 10: So how have things been since last we talked to you?
- 3:03Speaker 10: I know you.
- 3:05Speaker 2: We're doing all kinds of non-geeky things. Got married, but you've,
- 3:08Speaker 2: I think, taken another step.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Getting married is non-geeky?
- 3:10Speaker 10: Yeah, we decided last year. I called you out for it.
- 3:13Speaker 3: It's legitimate. It's legitimate.
- 3:14Speaker 10: I called you out.
- 3:16Speaker 2: For it because he went and got married. And then, like,
- 3:20Speaker 2: the most conventional things.
- 3:22Speaker 10: I believe you've had a child.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Oh, God.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Offspring.
- 3:27Speaker 10: Alien spawn.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's basically it.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Yeah, no, his name's Taylor. We nicknamed him Chuthulu.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a laugh.
- 3:38Speaker 9: Was he born with tentacles?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah, he cut his hands and everything. And he's a joy.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I mean, it's.
- 3:48Speaker 5: His first time being a dad, and it's a very
- 3:55Speaker 5: different experience than what I've been led to believe.
- 3:59Speaker 10: But it never stops. That's all I know.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Um, no, but, uh, you know, uh, and it gets
- 4:07Speaker 5: me thinking, um, um, I took him to a department
- 4:11Speaker 5: store just, uh, just a month ago and the salespeople
- 4:15Speaker 5: gave him a, uh, a balloon, one.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Of those human built balloons on a string.
- 4:20Speaker 5: And he was, this is the first time he'd ever
- 4:22Speaker 5: seen the balloon. And he was, screaming and laughing and
- 4:26Speaker 5: giggling all the way home and it got me wondering,
- 4:29Speaker 5: oh my god, you know, I'm at this age where
- 4:33Speaker 5: the simple pleasures of a balloon, you know, I'm jaded
- 4:36Speaker 5: to that. You know, I can't remember when I was
- 4:38Speaker 5: that happy.
- 4:38Speaker 1: To get a balloon.
- 4:39Speaker 10: You are pretty jaded.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 5: So, it is very much looking at the world with
- 4:46Speaker 5: new eyes and I do want him to, I mean,
- 4:50Speaker 5: he laughs a lot, he's discovering the world and, and,
- 4:53Speaker 5: When it comes to things geeky, I think I do
- 4:58Speaker 5: want to raise him right, and I do want to
- 5:01Speaker 5: introduce him to this genre, this world that we are in,
- 5:06Speaker 5: but introduce him right.
- 5:08Speaker 9: Does that not include the original three?
- 5:12Speaker 2: The episode one through three of Star Wars. That's how
- 5:16Speaker 2: all geeks have to feel. That's the situation they all
- 5:18Speaker 2: find themselves in now is like, What do I make
- 5:20Speaker 2: him watch and how do I let him experience Star Wars?
- 5:24Speaker 5: Well, my feeling is that he should start with basically
- 5:29Speaker 5: with puppets and miniatures and rubber suits and all of
- 5:32Speaker 5: that and to the cell animation. And I don't want
- 5:37Speaker 5: to introduce him to CG just yet because I've seen
- 5:40Speaker 5: so many kids these days.
- 5:42Speaker 3: They're started off in CG and they won't go backwards.
- 5:45Speaker 3: They won't.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Give the old stuff a chance. And the old stuff
- 5:48Speaker 5: is really, really good.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think.
- 5:53Speaker 5: It was a case of, okay, there are wires, there's
- 5:56Speaker 5: green screen, you can see there's seams on the rubber suits,
- 6:00Speaker 5: but you had to fill.
- 6:01Speaker 9: In the gaps.
- 6:02Speaker 5: And you got more invested in it and you got
- 6:05Speaker 5: more excited. I've seen so many kids who have grown
- 6:09Speaker 5: up on the Avengers and Transformers, the movie, and.
- 6:14Speaker 3: They don't get really excited about things anymore. Not like
- 6:18Speaker 3: the way we got excited about.
- 6:22Speaker 5: The latest Rubber Monster movie.
- 6:25Speaker 10: I think all that stuff.
- 6:26Speaker 3: That's our segue, isn't it?
- 6:27Speaker 2: Well, I think all that stuff you have to fill
- 6:29Speaker 2: in the blanks there. I think that sort of fires
- 6:31Speaker 2: your imagination when you're a kid, and you don't have that.
- 6:35Speaker 10: If everything is available to you, you don't have to
- 6:38Speaker 10: use your imagination. You don't want.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Them to look back and say, well, that's so fake,
- 6:41Speaker 3: I'm not going to watch it.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Yeah, well.
- 6:44Speaker 10: Sometimes that's where the best stuff lies.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 6:47Speaker 10: You never know.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And, you know, as much as I will knock it,
- 6:50Speaker 2: he's a ridiculously cute kid, so I don't know.
- 6:52Speaker 3: What to tell you.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I'm still not sure how this came from you, but
- 6:57Speaker 2: congratulations either way.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Shall I explain it to you in detail?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Only if you can use diagrams. I want to see
- 7:04Speaker 2: you draw some stuff in detail.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I'll do a flip book for you.
- 7:07Speaker 10: Make use of the art and, you know, really bring
- 7:10Speaker 10: it to life.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yeah maybe a pop-up book.
- 7:14Speaker 10: I have one of those actually never mind that's a
- 7:16Speaker 10: different story all right um do you are you just
- 7:21Speaker 10: dying to get into this movie is that what you're.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Telling me not really no.
- 7:27Speaker 2: We can wander around other geek things have you seen
- 7:29Speaker 2: anything else you want to talk to you we've been
- 7:32Speaker 2: talking about x-men this weekend you want to Ease your
- 7:34Speaker 2: way in with some X-Men?
- 7:36Speaker 9: You haven't seen X-Men?
- 7:37Speaker 3: No, I haven't seen X-Men.
- 7:38Speaker 9: Are you kidding me?
- 7:39Speaker 3: I was preparing for this show.
- 7:41Speaker 10: That's true. All your focus should have gone, you know.
- 7:45Speaker 5: No, the other thing I've been working on is I've
- 7:48Speaker 5: started working with Jamie Anderson, who is Jerry Anderson's son.
- 7:52Speaker 5: And for those of you who don't remember Jerry Anderson,
- 7:55Speaker 5: he was the creator of Thunderbirds, Supercar, Fireball XL5.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Space 1999. The real shit.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Yeah, the stuff that I was excited about when I
- 8:07Speaker 5: was a kid.
- 8:08Speaker 10: Stuff that fuels that imagination.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And so his father died quite maybe a year or
- 8:18Speaker 3: two ago.
- 8:19Speaker 10: Yeah, we were talking about him last year.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Yeah, and he's really taken upon himself to... to take
- 8:27Speaker 5: whatever properties that are still left under the Jerry Anderson
- 8:30Speaker 5: banner and look into resurrecting it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So just, I think, last month, they had Andercon.
- 8:40Speaker 5: They put on the first official Jerry Anderson convention sanctioned
- 8:44Speaker 5: by the Anderson family.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Where was that?
- 8:46Speaker 3: In London.
- 8:48Speaker 5: And I think it was just sort of a testing
- 8:49Speaker 5: ground to see how many people, you know, is that
- 8:53Speaker 5: interest still alive?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 5: And, um, I think maybe about two or three weeks
- 8:58Speaker 5: before the event, they completely sold out.
- 9:01Speaker 3: And, uh, that's England. I mean, there, it is a
- 9:05Speaker 3: nostalgic thing there.
- 9:06Speaker 10: They're a very different market than.
- 9:08Speaker 5: But you know, there, there is a, there's quite a,
- 9:11Speaker 5: I found that there's quite a nostalgic following here too. Um,
- 9:16Speaker 5: and so, uh, I'm, I'm hoping that, um, he's able
- 9:21Speaker 5: to resurrect some of his father's old stuff and maybe
- 9:24Speaker 5: start creating new properties that will follow in his father's footsteps.
- 9:32Speaker 5: So his father, during the last few years, I think
- 9:38Speaker 5: was trying to take his old properties and update them
- 9:44Speaker 5: for a newer audience. And so he produced something called
- 9:49Speaker 5: the new Captain Scarlet, and it was in CG.
- 9:51Speaker 3: And I think that was the wrong move.
- 9:53Speaker 5: I think that when people remember Jerry Anderson they remember
- 9:57Speaker 5: the puppets they don't if you want to do CG
- 10:00Speaker 5: I mean you won't be any different than any other.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Saturday morning cartoon yeah all that stuff now.
- 10:06Speaker 5: So I think his son does understand that and so
- 10:09Speaker 5: you know I think that when we start thinking about
- 10:14Speaker 5: doing another show he will certainly keep that in mind
- 10:17Speaker 5: and I think you know hopefully with enough support and
- 10:21Speaker 5: enough people behind it, we'll.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Start getting back into miniatures and puppets. Because I really think, you.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Know, and I've said this before, when I was growing up,
- 10:33Speaker 5: watching those shows, at no point did I ever think
- 10:37Speaker 5: that they were real. It's not like they were trying
- 10:40Speaker 5: to pull the wool over my eyes.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I knew there were puppets. I knew there were miniatures.
- 10:45Speaker 5: But the charm of the show for me when I
- 10:47Speaker 5: was watching it was that I was watching toys move.
- 10:51Speaker 5: And I think that's something that's kind of missing in
- 10:56Speaker 5: today's children's shows, that we're all so caught up with
- 11:02Speaker 5: trying to make it polished and realistic that we've actually
- 11:06Speaker 5: lost some of the charm that was in watching something
- 11:11Speaker 5: physical like a puppet or a miniature.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I think especially when we were doing stop motion and
- 11:16Speaker 2: stuff last time, I think there is something to that,
- 11:18Speaker 2: that even when you're a kid, if you don't 100%
- 11:21Speaker 2: understand how it works, there's still something weird and magic
- 11:25Speaker 2: about it. You know it's not real. You do get
- 11:28Speaker 2: that level of like, okay, I know this isn't a
- 11:30Speaker 2: real thing happening, but there's something to it that connects
- 11:34Speaker 2: with you, and because it's a real physical thing, I
- 11:36Speaker 2: think it does kind of lend itself to kind of
- 11:39Speaker 2: bringing kids into it a little more than CG or
- 11:43Speaker 2: Even cell animation, it's a different thing, I think, than
- 11:45Speaker 2: just something about stop motion and puppetry that's like.
- 11:49Speaker 10: There's a charm about it.
- 11:51Speaker 3: There's a craft about it. And, you know, it is
- 11:55Speaker 3: a handmade thing.
- 11:57Speaker 10: Well, yeah, I'm obviously on board with that, and.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I didn't really think about it before we got into this,
- 12:03Speaker 2: but I myself am working on a series of short films,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and they may or may not involve puppets.
- 12:10Speaker 3: So.
- 12:11Speaker 10: I don't... I don't know.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I've been working on this idea for years now, and
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's funny that it's sort of come together, and I've
- 12:17Speaker 2: found a few other people are like, yeah, that's.
- 12:19Speaker 10: What we need to be doing. So it's in the works.
- 12:22Speaker 10: It has been for quite a while now. It's a
- 12:24Speaker 10: very slow process trying to get things.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Brian, I hate to break it. Those are condoms. They're
- 12:28Speaker 3: not finger puppets.
- 12:29Speaker 10: But I've got five of them.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Look. Watch this. Hi, guys.
- 12:33Speaker 7: Oh, never mind.
- 12:34Speaker 10: I'll save it for later. Don't appreciate my condom puppets.
- 12:40Speaker 3: It's your art.
- 12:41Speaker 6: I know.
- 12:42Speaker 10: No, no, you wait. It will be something. I don't
- 12:46Speaker 10: know what exactly. But it will be something. And so
- 12:50Speaker 10: far I'm very amused and entertained by the concept.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Well, we're all very relieved it's spermacidal anyways.
- 12:57Speaker 10: No, they're way cool.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You'll see.
- 13:00Speaker 2: So is yours going to be geared mostly towards TV
- 13:04Speaker 2: as like a show thing or more of Internet-based or
- 13:07Speaker 2: the one that you're working on with?
- 13:09Speaker 3: Well, no, we don't have anything on the go just yet.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I mean, just the idea.
- 13:14Speaker 5: That's the approach that I think we're looking at. And yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 5: I think that's, it's something that's sorely missing these days.
- 13:24Speaker 5: And I do think that bringing that back, I mean,
- 13:28Speaker 5: the name Jerry Anderson, you immediately think of Super Mario Nation,
- 13:32Speaker 5: you immediately think of the vehicles and the spaceships and
- 13:36Speaker 5: And to move away from that, I think is, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 5: you're kind of contrary to the memory of Jerry Anderson.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And I think that this is the way to go.
- 13:50Speaker 5: It will set itself apart from every other production that's
- 13:53Speaker 5: out there.
- 13:55Speaker 3: And, you know, I kind of miss that.
- 13:56Speaker 5: I kind of miss the, you know, when, remember as
- 14:00Speaker 5: a kid when you would, you know, wake up and
- 14:01Speaker 5: you'd be so excited. for that new episode to come
- 14:05Speaker 5: on board, or sorry, to be aired. And nowadays it's like, oh, well,
- 14:12Speaker 5: I can just.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Download it later.
- 14:13Speaker 5: The passion and the excitement has gone out of it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: There is a difference in just the way that we
- 14:20Speaker 2: view things now, and I don't know that that'll ever
- 14:22Speaker 2: go back. There isn't that episodic thing of people that
- 14:25Speaker 2: are like, I'm going to sit down on Wednesday nights
- 14:28Speaker 2: and watch this.
- 14:29Speaker 10: That's sort of, almost completely died out there's.
- 14:32Speaker 2: A little left with network television but for the most
- 14:35Speaker 2: part everything is either you know on youtube or streaming
- 14:38Speaker 2: or you can just download it or watch it in
- 14:40Speaker 2: a huge chunk all at once so it's or it
- 14:43Speaker 2: will be interesting to kind of see where all that
- 14:45Speaker 2: goes in the next 10 years i think just in
- 14:47Speaker 2: that span all of that stuff's gonna change so i
- 14:50Speaker 2: think for all of us trying to find these new
- 14:53Speaker 2: projects and where we're going with them i think that's
- 14:55Speaker 2: part of it too is where it is there to
- 14:57Speaker 2: go with them and what do you want to do
- 14:59Speaker 2: with it and i think there's unlimited possibilities with it
- 15:02Speaker 2: but i don't know how.
- 15:04Speaker 10: It's going to pan out so it'll be interesting to
- 15:05Speaker 10: say i.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Just think that that passion is missing these days you.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Know patrick are you playing with puppets in any professional
- 15:13Speaker 2: or amateur capacity he's got.
- 15:14Speaker 3: His hands under the table oh so he is that's.
- 15:17Speaker 9: The only puppet i play with.
- 15:19Speaker 10: All righty let's save him for a later.
- 15:22Speaker 9: Episode way into the godzilla puppet I have a feeling
- 15:26Speaker 9: that was a puppet.
- 15:27Speaker 10: You're jumping way ahead. All right, so with that, we'll
- 15:30Speaker 10: take a break here and come back with this week's movie.
- 16:18Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 16:40Speaker 8: Popcorn freshly popped and buttered. Look good? Sure, it looks
- 16:58Speaker 8: good and it tastes even better.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Get some now.
- 17:01Speaker 9: Godzilla, king of the monsters.
- 17:03Speaker 8: Fantastic beyond comprehension. Gripping beyond compare.
- 17:08Speaker 9: Astounding beyond belief.
- 17:11Speaker 10: The mightiest monster.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Of them all.
- 17:15Speaker 11: See Godzilla, king of the monsters.

- 18:08Speaker 7: They're not fooling anybody that what happened was a natural disaster.
- 18:13Speaker 7: It was not an earthquake. It wasn't a typhoon.
- 18:19Speaker 5: They're lying.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I'm not crazy. Whatever it is they're guarding so carefully,
- 18:26Speaker 3: I need to be able.
- 18:27Speaker 8: To prove it.
- 18:36Speaker 6: The arrogance of man is thinking nature is in our control,
- 18:42Speaker 6: and not the.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Other way around. I know many of you have family
- 18:46Speaker 3: and loved ones, and that you want to help them.
- 18:50Speaker 10: Well, this is your chance.
- 19:20Speaker 11: We'll be right back.
- 19:56Speaker 2: All right, so we are back with this week's Out
- 19:58Speaker 2: on the Town feature. Yes, we left the house. It
- 20:00Speaker 2: doesn't happen much, but for Godzilla, we will. So this
- 20:04Speaker 2: week's feature is Godzilla. The year is 2014.
- 20:08Speaker 10: The director Gareth Edwards, the plot, according to IMDb... Party on, Gareth.
- 20:14Speaker 10: You're on the wrong movie. The wrong movie.
- 20:17Speaker 2: The world's most famous monsters pitted against malevolent creatures who,
- 20:21Speaker 2: bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
- 20:26Speaker 10: Dun-dun-dun. Spoiler alert. We're going to tear the hell out
- 20:30Speaker 10: of this and probably ruin many things about it and
- 20:34Speaker 10: or lead people's lives. So feel free to go watch
- 20:37Speaker 10: it beforehand. You have been warned. All right, where would
- 20:41Speaker 10: you like to get into it?
- 20:43Speaker 2: I have a feeling I know which way you're leaning
- 20:45Speaker 2: on this one. Patrick, I'm really not sure where you
- 20:49Speaker 2: came in on this.
- 20:51Speaker 10: I'm interested to see how all of this comes together.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Well, it's big and terrible.
- 20:57Speaker 4: More frightening than I ever thought possible.
- 21:00Speaker 10: So you loved it, is what you're saying.
- 21:01Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Let's start with the overall structure, because I know where
- 21:07Speaker 2: things start to fall apart for most people.
- 21:11Speaker 10: As it opens up in that first half, how do
- 21:14Speaker 10: you feel about the movie?
- 21:16Speaker 3: Who are you directing this to?
- 21:17Speaker 9: Oh, totally towards you. I'm just here for one moment.
- 21:22Speaker 3: You know what?
- 21:23Speaker 5: My feeling is that if you've seen Gareth Edwards' previous movie, Monsters,
- 21:30Speaker 5: you've pretty much seen Godzilla. Basically, it's like 90% people
- 21:37Speaker 5: running around, and then by the time you do get
- 21:40Speaker 5: to see Godzilla, or in the case of monsters, the aliens,
- 21:45Speaker 5: I mean, it's this sort of... You've got to see
- 21:47Speaker 5: them kind of float around and do this sort of
- 21:49Speaker 5: touchy-feely thing.
- 21:50Speaker 3: And then that's it. End of movie.
- 21:53Speaker 5: And Godzilla was a little bit more ambitious, but it
- 21:59Speaker 5: had the same sort of tease.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Every time.
- 22:02Speaker 3: You thought, okay, we've waited this long. Here we go.
- 22:05Speaker 3: We're going to get.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Our wrestling match.
- 22:08Speaker 10: Our big fight.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Our big throwdown. We need the wrestling match.
- 22:11Speaker 5: And suddenly, no, we're not getting it. It's just a
- 22:14Speaker 5: big cock tease.
- 22:16Speaker 10: It's funny that you used that word.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I sat in the theater and I was like, oh,
- 22:20Speaker 2: this director is just a tease.
- 22:22Speaker 10: Like, that's exactly what I'm saying to myself.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I'm like, as we get to that first scene, and
- 22:27Speaker 2: I guess we can jump to that because this is
- 22:29Speaker 2: probably what most of the.
- 22:30Speaker 10: Discussion will come down to is the fact that We
- 22:33Speaker 10: get to that first big fight and we don't get it.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And the thing is, that one, I will almost give him,
- 22:39Speaker 2: the way he does that reveal is really clever. The
- 22:41Speaker 2: fact that he builds it up, we think we're going
- 22:43Speaker 2: to get it, we don't. But then as we get
- 22:45Speaker 2: to that next scene and we're watching the news, we
- 22:48Speaker 2: kind of do. We see little pieces of them just
- 22:50Speaker 2: tearing the town apart. I'm like, that was kind of clever. Like,
- 22:53Speaker 2: if you're going to do a fake out, that's a
- 22:55Speaker 2: good way to ease into it. I think it's the
- 22:57Speaker 2: next one where he screwed us over. I was like, okay,
- 23:00Speaker 2: that's fun. That's all fun and games. But 20, 30
- 23:03Speaker 2: minutes later, you better get to a big monster fight.
- 23:07Speaker 10: And he does it again. Like, you son of a bitch.
- 23:11Speaker 2: The door closes and you just want to hit Gareth
- 23:14Speaker 2: Edwards with a building. You want to get into the fight.
- 23:17Speaker 10: With Gareth Edwards.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 23:20Speaker 10: That's where I think.
- 23:21Speaker 5: He goes horribly wrong. And then finally, you do get
- 23:24Speaker 5: the big fight at the end. And it's almost nothing.
- 23:29Speaker 5: You know, it doesn't... That lead up and that weight
- 23:33Speaker 5: and you're thinking, okay, there's got to be something massive
- 23:35Speaker 5: at the end.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And it isn't. I mean, you kind of get.
- 23:40Speaker 5: There is a shot in there that I will give.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I call it the money shot. It is somewhat pornographic,
- 23:46Speaker 5: somewhat erotic.
- 23:47Speaker 2: There's a couple of them there, but there's the one
- 23:50Speaker 2: main one by the end. You're like, all right, well,
- 23:51Speaker 2: there was my ticket price right there. So that is
- 23:54Speaker 2: the money shot, literally.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Which was kind of, you know, if you... along the
- 23:59Speaker 5: same lines as the two girls two cups sort.
- 24:02Speaker 12: Of thing sort of yeah yeah but uh uh yeah
- 24:07Speaker 12: i i you know i think that i was just
- 24:11Speaker 12: sort of really bored by it honestly.
- 24:14Speaker 9: It just had too much matthew broderick like it's like
- 24:18Speaker 9: why was the whole movie about the kid.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I do wonder i mean we And this is what
- 24:24Speaker 2: I don't get. For somebody who's building this movie, I
- 24:26Speaker 2: understand he's trying to not just do another monster movie.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He wants to actually, because that was the thing. I
- 24:32Speaker 2: was like, halfway in, I'm saying to myself the same thing.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I'm kind of like, okay, I'm hearing everybody else as
- 24:40Speaker 2: I get out of the theater going, man, why do
- 24:42Speaker 2: they do all this stuff with the people?
- 24:44Speaker 10: We just want fighting. It's a Godzilla movie.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I can hear people already kind of bashing it just
- 24:48Speaker 2: because all they want is two monsters fighting. And I'm like, no,
- 24:51Speaker 2: that's not really true either because I saw Pacific Rim.
- 24:55Speaker 10: And that was my problem with that.
- 24:56Speaker 9: And you all missed about that.
- 24:57Speaker 2: It was nothing but two monsters fighting. And I was like,
- 25:00Speaker 2: there's no character development there. I could care less about
- 25:03Speaker 2: these characters.
- 25:04Speaker 10: They're never really fleshed out. So I'm like, I keep
- 25:06Speaker 10: wanting that.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Like, I want a mixture of these two things because
- 25:09Speaker 2: Pacific Rim was nothing but fighting the entire time.
- 25:12Speaker 10: There was a lot of fighting.
- 25:13Speaker 2: They didn't really, I mean, it had its issues too, but.
- 25:16Speaker 2: They didn't skimp on the fighting there. They get right
- 25:18Speaker 2: into it and you get a lot of it over
- 25:20Speaker 2: the length of the movie. And then Godzilla is just
- 25:22Speaker 2: a big tease for the most of it. But it's
- 25:25Speaker 2: pretending like it's building this character situation and all these
- 25:29Speaker 2: different characters. But it kind of ends up doing the
- 25:31Speaker 2: same thing. It doesn't build strong enough characters. We don't
- 25:34Speaker 2: really care about that guy. His wife has nothing to do.
- 25:38Speaker 3: He's actually ineffectual throughout the whole movie.
- 25:40Speaker 5: He doesn't get to do much.
- 25:41Speaker 2: He doesn't factor in until we get to the very end.
- 25:45Speaker 2: The bomb thing, I guess, is the most functional he
- 25:47Speaker 2: ever is in the movie. But I'm just kind of like,
- 25:49Speaker 2: why have we been riding along with this guy.
- 25:52Speaker 10: The whole time?
- 25:52Speaker 9: He destroyed the hive in four seconds alone.
- 25:56Speaker 10: There you go. See, that's the only time. That and
- 25:58Speaker 10: saving that kid.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Who, Matthew Broderick?
- 26:01Speaker 9: Matthew Broderick did it too.
- 26:05Speaker 3: He's the same character.
- 26:06Speaker 10: Kind of.
- 26:07Speaker 9: Only Matthew Broderick, I like him.
- 26:11Speaker 10: Let's keep Ferris out of this movie.
- 26:12Speaker 5: But, you know, to be fair, I mean, most of
- 26:14Speaker 5: us who remember Godzilla movies, I mean, tend to remember
- 26:18Speaker 5: the drag out.
- 26:20Speaker 9: Oh, Toho did it. They killed us. 90 minutes before
- 26:24Speaker 9: you see anything.
- 26:25Speaker 5: We're kind of half expecting, because what we remember are,
- 26:28Speaker 5: you know, those fights and those cheesy shots and.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Toys flying around.
- 26:35Speaker 9: Godzilla playing ping pong with giant crab monsters. Personal favorite.
- 26:39Speaker 3: I just prefer to.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Do it as like WBF with giant monster costumes on.
- 26:43Speaker 3: And that's essentially what Pacific Rim gave us.
- 26:45Speaker 5: But if you actually really want to go back and
- 26:48Speaker 5: look at the original Godzilla movie, it wasn't that kind
- 26:51Speaker 5: of movie. And yes, okay, Gareth Edwards made a movie
- 26:54Speaker 5: that is closer to the original Godzilla than what most
- 26:58Speaker 5: of us remember a Godzilla movie should be about.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Which I'm fine with that. I just think he needed
- 27:03Speaker 2: to Do more with that first half. If you're going
- 27:06Speaker 2: to devote that much time to building it up, it
- 27:10Speaker 2: just needs to... I don't want to knock it overall,
- 27:13Speaker 2: because everybody seems to be trashing it, or most of
- 27:15Speaker 2: the people I've talked to have been very unhappy with it.
- 27:18Speaker 10: What I think he's also faced with a really.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Bad situation, whereas in this world of superheroes, he's almost
- 27:24Speaker 2: telling an origin story again. He's forced to go back
- 27:27Speaker 2: and be like, well, here's how it happened. We can't
- 27:30Speaker 2: just have a monster wander out and start beating each other. Oh,
- 27:32Speaker 2: except they did do that in Pacific Rim. They're like
- 27:34Speaker 2: two minutes in, they're like, and monsters fight. So there
- 27:37Speaker 2: is a way to do that. I think that was
- 27:38Speaker 2: a little forced too. Like we almost wanted a little
- 27:41Speaker 2: more backstory. So again, we've got to hit this middle
- 27:44Speaker 2: ground because I feel like he's setting this up and
- 27:47Speaker 2: he's got to explain so much that you get to
- 27:50Speaker 2: that 30, 40, 50 minutes of like.
- 27:54Speaker 10: Story of explaining how all this comes together. And I'm like,
- 27:57Speaker 10: we need that.
- 27:58Speaker 2: But at the same time, we need something to bring
- 28:00Speaker 2: us into it we need better characters for that matter
- 28:04Speaker 2: and and just a little more action along the way
- 28:06Speaker 2: to drive the plot i think so i i understand
- 28:09Speaker 2: he's faced with a lot trying to because that's the
- 28:12Speaker 2: thing i feel like once he's got that out of
- 28:13Speaker 2: the way if they're keeping him on to do the
- 28:16Speaker 2: next one which we probably will at this point but
- 28:19Speaker 2: i feel like okay we've gotten the big dumb story
- 28:21Speaker 2: out of the way of setting up the plot do
- 28:22Speaker 2: we now just go right in and just start with
- 28:25Speaker 2: more you know okay here's A monster flies in from
- 28:27Speaker 2: space and fight. You know, do we get right into
- 28:29Speaker 2: it now? Is that where we go? I kind of
- 28:31Speaker 2: hope so.
- 28:32Speaker 10: That would be amazing.
- 28:33Speaker 9: Or Gatsuki.
- 28:35Speaker 10: No Gatsuki, please.
- 28:36Speaker 7: I'm tired of talking to you about this.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I want my son. I want to see my son.
- 28:41Speaker 7: I want to know that he's all right.
- 28:42Speaker 11: This guy.
- 28:45Speaker 3: This guy knows. He knows where he is.
- 28:50Speaker 7: I want my son.
- 28:52Speaker 9: And I want my bag. And I want to talk
- 28:54Speaker 9: to somebody in charge, not you.
- 28:56Speaker 11: No, not you.
- 28:57Speaker 9: I'm done talking to you.
- 29:01Speaker 3: All right? Well, you're looking at me.
- 29:02Speaker 9: Right now like I'm in a fish tank, right?
- 29:04Speaker 7: That's fine, because I know what happened here. And you keep.
- 29:07Speaker 9: Telling everybody that this place is a death zone, but
- 29:10Speaker 9: it's not.
- 29:12Speaker 10: You're lying.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Because what's really happening is that you're hiding something out there.
- 29:19Speaker 11: I'm right, aren't I?
- 29:22Speaker 10: My wife So I don't know, what was.
- 29:27Speaker 11: Your thought? And I have a right to know! I
- 29:36Speaker 11: deserve answers!
- 29:37Speaker 10: So, I don't know. What was your thought on the
- 29:41Speaker 10: structuring of it? Because I feel like we do need more.
- 29:44Speaker 2: We do need to ground it with a little more of,
- 29:46Speaker 2: you know, kind of what they wanted to do with
- 29:48Speaker 2: the original Godzilla. Of, like, giving us the backstory of, like,
- 29:52Speaker 2: it was based in a real world. In a real
- 29:54Speaker 2: world that was kind of dealing with fear and... trauma
- 29:58Speaker 2: of just, you know, coming out of the war and
- 30:00Speaker 2: like seeing nuclear devastation for real. So they're kind of like, okay, yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 2: this is a sci-fi story, but it's based in how
- 30:06Speaker 2: messed up the world is right now. And it's like,
- 30:08Speaker 2: we're just sort of taking it off in a weird direction,
- 30:10Speaker 2: but there's, I mean, you can feel that when you
- 30:13Speaker 2: watch that first one, that it's based out of some
- 30:15Speaker 2: sort of reality that I don't know that we.
- 30:17Speaker 10: Get in this new one.
- 30:18Speaker 2: I think this one is just a big fun monster
- 30:20Speaker 2: movie and the fun comes in way too late to
- 30:23Speaker 2: save it.
- 30:24Speaker 10: Almost kind of.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Are you saying that it did save it?
- 30:28Speaker 5: I'm of the opinion that it was just too little
- 30:31Speaker 5: too late, honestly.
- 30:33Speaker 2: It brings it back around for me. I didn't hate
- 30:37Speaker 2: it because I really did like that last scene. That
- 30:39Speaker 2: last fight, I would have liked more, I agree. But
- 30:42Speaker 2: I feel like what was on there was pretty solid.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I think once we finally, again, they drag it out
- 30:47Speaker 2: where we almost don't even see Godzilla for most of
- 30:49Speaker 2: the movie, and that's not.
- 30:50Speaker 10: A good idea.
- 30:51Speaker 9: I'm not sure I saw it.
- 30:52Speaker 2: It's in the name. We know he's there. Go ahead
- 30:55Speaker 2: and bring him out at least midway into the movie.
- 30:57Speaker 10: But, I don't know.
- 30:58Speaker 2: It seems like once we see him, I think he
- 31:00Speaker 2: looks pretty good. I like the effects.
- 31:02Speaker 10: I like those other two monsters. I think they were
- 31:05Speaker 10: cool monsters.
- 31:05Speaker 5: It's like that Pink Panther movie that they did after
- 31:08Speaker 5: Peter Sellers died and the characters are trying to catch
- 31:11Speaker 5: a glimpse.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Of Spectre Clouseau.
- 31:12Speaker 10: Trail of the Pink Panther?
- 31:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it.
- 31:15Speaker 10: Starring Ted Wass?
- 31:17Speaker 3: There he goes!
- 31:18Speaker 10: Curse of the Pink Panther, that's right.
- 31:19Speaker 9: Does Godzilla die, or does he just fall asleep?
- 31:22Speaker 10: He's worn out, and he takes a nap. You know,
- 31:24Speaker 10: we all get worn out. I went home and took
- 31:26Speaker 10: a nap earlier, it's cool.
- 31:28Speaker 9: That's interesting.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I do wonder, like, what, yeah, I was like, what,
- 31:34Speaker 2: they really didn't spell that out, so are we just
- 31:36Speaker 2: supposed to, like, take from.
- 31:39Speaker 10: That what we want?
- 31:40Speaker 9: Two big fire blasts, and then he has to go sleep.
- 31:42Speaker 10: And he's all worn out.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Well, then I was like, okay, is it because they're
- 31:46Speaker 2: dealing with all this, like, everyone else, all the creatures
- 31:48Speaker 2: are feeding off this nuclear.
- 31:50Speaker 10: I do like the one eating, like, nuclear weapons as
- 31:53Speaker 10: he busts into that submarine. So I'm like, by then
- 31:56Speaker 10: they'd blown up all the nuclear stuff.
- 31:58Speaker 2: So I was like, was he feeding off of that?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Are we supposed to think that was part of it?
- 32:01Speaker 2: And now they've gotten rid of all that and they
- 32:03Speaker 2: took everything away and now he's depleted and has to
- 32:06Speaker 2: take a nap.
- 32:07Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 32:08Speaker 10: They really kind of should have pinned that down a
- 32:10Speaker 10: little more, I suppose.
- 32:11Speaker 9: I think there's a lot of questions about this movie
- 32:13Speaker 9: that go unanswered.
- 32:14Speaker 10: Get Gareth on the phone.
- 32:15Speaker 9: Like, why is Walter White in it at all?
- 32:18Speaker 10: What was your take on him overall?
- 32:20Speaker 9: I really went and saw the movie for him, and
- 32:23Speaker 9: I fell into a trap. Because I was too dumb
- 32:25Speaker 9: to realize, they're going to kill him off in a
- 32:27Speaker 9: minute here, and I just wasted $ 6. 50.
- 32:31Speaker 10: You went to the matinee. I did go to the matinee.
- 32:34Speaker 3: To be honest, the part with... Bryan Cranston was probably
- 32:38Speaker 3: the most.
- 32:39Speaker 9: That was the best part.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, you felt in his situation. He had emotion.
- 32:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:44Speaker 9: And if he would have replaced Ferris Bueller, it would
- 32:46Speaker 9: have been fine.
- 32:47Speaker 10: I mean, it's kind of true.
- 32:48Speaker 2: He, at least in that first 10, 15 minutes, however
- 32:52Speaker 2: long he's in it, like, you... I've had many people
- 32:55Speaker 2: bring up the fact that he's just kind of chewing
- 32:56Speaker 2: up the scenery. Like, he's nothing but a raw nerve
- 32:59Speaker 2: the entire time. I think earlier today they said he
- 33:02Speaker 2: just jumps in season three.
- 33:04Speaker 10: As Walter White.
- 33:04Speaker 9: Exactly.
- 33:05Speaker 2: He's just immediately crazy. So, I mean, he kind of
- 33:09Speaker 2: dials it a little too far. But at least, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 2: he is a great actor. He does bring something to
- 33:14Speaker 2: that role. I do like the story that they are
- 33:17Speaker 2: setting up of him losing his wife. And, like, you
- 33:20Speaker 2: do feel like he's got something at stake. So, again,
- 33:22Speaker 2: as the story arc, it would then balance out if, like, okay,
- 33:26Speaker 2: so now he's trying to redeem himself or what they
- 33:28Speaker 2: were doing or the death of his wife.
- 33:30Speaker 10: Like, some sort of balance to his life. Or we
- 33:33Speaker 10: just kill him, whichever.
- 33:34Speaker 9: We're going to hand it off to the catatonic kid.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So, yeah, somebody else I heard referred to that as, like,
- 33:41Speaker 2: the entire movie is false advertising.
- 33:43Speaker 10: Just being roped in as false advertising.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Because they really do build it up like he's the
- 33:47Speaker 2: main character.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 33:48Speaker 9: I wanted to see him versus Godzilla.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Which, again, is a clever trick if you can pull
- 33:52Speaker 2: that off. That's a psycho move right there. But this
- 33:55Speaker 2: is no psycho. So you can't do that unless you're
- 33:59Speaker 2: handing it off to someone equally as strong or impressive or.
- 34:04Speaker 10: Able to carry the scene, you know.
- 34:06Speaker 5: Can you imagine Godzilla on one end of the street
- 34:08Speaker 5: and Brian Cranston on the other side in his ginch?
- 34:11Speaker 8: Yes.
- 34:13Speaker 9: I feel like it was a 90-minute or 120-minute short story.
- 34:18Speaker 9: It was.
- 34:20Speaker 10: It was a too.
- 34:21Speaker 9: Drawn-out short story, and it's setting us up for hopefully
- 34:24Speaker 9: they make a second one, and it's a good one.
- 34:26Speaker 10: I think it's already greenlit at this point.
- 34:28Speaker 9: Well, they greenlit two and three, and it's like, but
- 34:30Speaker 9: now are we going to get the monsters we know
- 34:31Speaker 9: and love? Because I do, I want to see somebody
- 34:33Speaker 9: come from space. If they fuck up Mothra, though.
- 34:37Speaker 10: You don't mess with Mothra? You don't mess with Rodan.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 10: Don't you fuck with Rodan.
- 34:42Speaker 2: So, you know, they really do kind of, again, like,
- 34:45Speaker 2: you get into these properties sometimes, and it's like, the
- 34:48Speaker 2: deck is almost stacked against you.
- 34:50Speaker 10: Like, there's so much.
- 34:51Speaker 9: Oh, you just wait. Pacific Rim opened up this, and
- 34:53Speaker 9: it opened up Voltron. And when they fuck over Voltron.
- 34:56Speaker 10: Little kids everywhere. Who are now old people. Exactly. Will
- 35:00Speaker 10: be very angry. Oh, I remember my childhood and this
- 35:06Speaker 10: is not it.
- 35:08Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:08Speaker 2: I mean, in a way, I think sometimes people get
- 35:10Speaker 2: too precious about the specifics of these properties.
- 35:13Speaker 10: So that's the beauty.
- 35:14Speaker 9: You can't fuck up a Power Rangers movie.
- 35:16Speaker 10: That's true. When you're bad to begin with, you don't
- 35:18Speaker 10: have to worry about it.
- 35:19Speaker 9: You can only go up.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But, yeah, we get too caught up in that. I
- 35:22Speaker 2: don't mind them doing something slightly different with it.
- 35:25Speaker 10: If they do it well.
- 35:26Speaker 9: They have to do it well.
- 35:27Speaker 10: And I think that's part of the problem.
- 35:28Speaker 9: See, the sad fact is, like, the Godzilla part was perfect.
- 35:31Speaker 9: There just wasn't enough of it. Like, I liked the
- 35:33Speaker 9: new body. I liked the roar. I even was okay
- 35:36Speaker 9: with his, uh, it's not fire, or nuclear blast.
- 35:40Speaker 10: Whatever that is.
- 35:41Speaker 9: Yeah, whatever that was. I was good with it. And
- 35:43Speaker 9: I liked the whole, uh. kiss of death thing or
- 35:46Speaker 9: whatever he does whatever you want to.
- 35:47Speaker 10: Call that the finishing move I did.
- 35:49Speaker 9: Not I didn't see it coming but it's like I
- 35:52Speaker 9: kind of want him to like maybe maybe exercise a
- 35:54Speaker 9: little more so he's a little bit more of a
- 35:56Speaker 9: fighter I like have some abs well I like that
- 35:59Speaker 9: he was Rocky Balboa and they beat the fuck out
- 36:01Speaker 9: of him and he was like you know what I'm
- 36:03Speaker 9: gonna win because he's got my name.
- 36:05Speaker 10: More than I expected he took a beating but.
- 36:07Speaker 9: You could tell that all the fight scenes and everything
- 36:09Speaker 9: were so rushed it's like lose lose lose and now
- 36:11Speaker 9: I'm breathing fire down your face.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Mm-hmm Oh, no, you've spoiled it.
- 36:15Speaker 10: Yeah, we threw it out there too bad. Again, as
- 36:18Speaker 10: much as I like that big finishing move, I was
- 36:21Speaker 10: pretty taken with the tail slam.
- 36:23Speaker 9: The tail slam was sweet.
- 36:24Speaker 2: The tail slam was fun, because that's the one I
- 36:26Speaker 2: didn't see going. I was just like, because it's so quick.
- 36:28Speaker 2: It's just like, and here he, oh, shit. Like, it
- 36:31Speaker 2: is just, it is. It's back to the wrestling moment.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And I'm like, every once in a while, I'm on
- 36:36Speaker 2: board with that. And they definitely, that moment delivers that.
- 36:39Speaker 2: The kiss of death delivers.
- 36:41Speaker 10: I mean, it's got so much potential in that.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Last scene that just should have spilled out backwards about
- 36:46Speaker 2: a half hour. If we would have had that middle
- 36:49Speaker 2: fight when the doors close, because the doors close is
- 36:51Speaker 2: kind of that fuck you moment.
- 36:53Speaker 10: It's just like, no. No.
- 36:55Speaker 8: No.
- 36:56Speaker 10: Like the first one was a tease and I was
- 36:58Speaker 10: okay with that. I like the news footage.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I do want to know if somewhere like now on
- 37:04Speaker 2: the DVD there's going to be that footage because he
- 37:06Speaker 2: obviously shot that first fight because we see it going
- 37:09Speaker 2: on in the background. So I'm like, can we insert
- 37:12Speaker 2: that in and make it more interesting now? Because, yeah,
- 37:16Speaker 2: I let that first one slide because that was a
- 37:18Speaker 2: clever way to do it. But the door closing... It's
- 37:21Speaker 2: just like everybody in the audience, you could kind of
- 37:23Speaker 2: feel that, no. Like you could hear this little outcry
- 37:26Speaker 2: of like, but I want it.
- 37:29Speaker 10: Just adults crying into their popcorn. I want it fighting
- 37:34Speaker 10: with monsters.
- 37:37Speaker 3: I'm not watching this movie anymore.
- 37:39Speaker 10: I think that's where it drops the ball. I think,
- 37:43Speaker 10: number one, it should have.
- 37:44Speaker 3: It might have worked if it was a comedy, you know.
- 37:46Speaker 9: It would have been a really good back to the
- 37:47Speaker 9: 98 guns. Exactly. It worked with Matthew Broderick and John Reno.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Oh God.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I don't know. I, I, I just feel like it,
- 37:56Speaker 2: if it had that middle scene, that would balance it
- 37:59Speaker 2: pretty well. I think the only thing there is again,
- 38:02Speaker 2: that guy, like our lead kid, like he just doesn't,
- 38:05Speaker 2: he doesn't bring you in at all. Like I love,
- 38:07Speaker 2: and I, I've said it many a time recently. I
- 38:10Speaker 2: did not see this coming, uh, that I was so
- 38:12Speaker 2: on board with Elizabeth Olsen in everything, not just anything. Like,
- 38:16Speaker 2: I didn't see her coming in, like, those first few
- 38:18Speaker 2: indie movies she's in.
- 38:19Speaker 10: I'm like, wow. Like, she is a really good actress.
- 38:22Speaker 2: And everything she's done has been these, like, really smart,
- 38:27Speaker 2: cleverly shot, well-written indie movies.
- 38:30Speaker 10: And then this summer happens. Was she in Super 8?
- 38:33Speaker 10: Was that her? No. That's the Elf Annie. That's the
- 38:38Speaker 10: other little dynasty of super cool kids. Dakota's awesome. Elle's awesome.
- 38:44Speaker 2: And the other Olsens are just rich now. We don't
- 38:46Speaker 2: know what happened to them. But Elizabeth is really impressive.
- 38:49Speaker 2: So the fact that she has nothing to do is
- 38:53Speaker 2: killing me when I'm watching this. Because it's like the
- 38:55Speaker 2: other guy, you kind of just hear him go, duh.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Like his head is just kind of like there.
- 38:59Speaker 10: And it's full of rocks.
- 39:00Speaker 9: It really pisses me off about that kid. First of all,
- 39:03Speaker 9: his face. Secondly, every line that he has. But most
- 39:06Speaker 9: of all, and I know it's a movie, okay? Like
- 39:09Speaker 9: I understand it. And I know that he's in the army,
- 39:11Speaker 9: so they try to make it a little realistic. How
- 39:14Speaker 9: many special force operations does this kid do that puts
- 39:18Speaker 9: him in harm's way so you can see every little
- 39:20Speaker 9: bit of the action?
- 39:22Speaker 10: He's very lucky. Or unlucky, as the case may be.
- 39:25Speaker 9: He's in the army, and yet he's going to do
- 39:27Speaker 9: a halo jump with Navy SEALs with no tactical training.
- 39:30Speaker 2: And why is it that every little military step along
- 39:33Speaker 2: the way, they're like, oh, okay, cool. I know we're
- 39:35Speaker 2: in a bad situation here, but usually they're pretty hardcore
- 39:38Speaker 2: about that stuff.
- 39:38Speaker 10: They'll be like, you're not in my outfit. Get lost, buddy.
- 39:40Speaker 9: Oh, you got a train bomb? I'm good at train bombs.
- 39:42Speaker 10: Good enough. I'm trying to figure it out. Since we're
- 39:44Speaker 10: making fun of him, I guess we should figure out
- 39:45Speaker 10: what his name is. He is not Brian Cranston.
- 39:48Speaker 3: I know that.
- 39:50Speaker 10: Or no, Aaron Taylor Johnson?
- 39:52Speaker 9: Yeah, I think so.
- 39:53Speaker 10: That sounds it? Okay.
- 39:55Speaker 2: C.J.
- 39:55Speaker 10: Adams is the key word. Aaron Taylor Johnson, you sorry bastard.
- 40:01Speaker 9: I would have even been fine if it was more
- 40:02Speaker 9: Ken Watanabe. I love Ken Wildem.
- 40:05Speaker 10: Again, talk about somebody that they set up this story.
- 40:09Speaker 2: And again, we've got somebody who's actually bringing something to
- 40:11Speaker 2: it of like, okay, I've seen this shit go down.
- 40:14Speaker 10: My family's dealt with this for a generation now.
- 40:17Speaker 9: I work for the company.
- 40:19Speaker 10: Yeah, it should bring more to it from him, not
- 40:22Speaker 10: from this dork.
- 40:23Speaker 9: See, that's what number two and number three, you have
- 40:26Speaker 9: to attack the story from a different standpoint, and it's
- 40:28Speaker 9: got to be from that company. And they're going to
- 40:30Speaker 9: ruin it with the monster. You can't make a monster
- 40:32Speaker 9: that makes everybody happy. One of them's going to be
- 40:35Speaker 9: classic monster. Another one's going to be 100 million little
- 40:39Speaker 9: spiders or some stupid little thing that Godzilla's got to
- 40:42Speaker 9: fight and there's too many of them and they're going
- 40:44Speaker 9: to try to eat the Earth's atmosphere or some kind
- 40:46Speaker 9: of Transformers bullshit because everybody's doing that these days.
- 40:50Speaker 10: And then there's going.
- 40:50Speaker 9: To be the parallel universe and the other ships coming
- 40:53Speaker 9: in and Godzilla's like, oh, fuck this shit. They're going
- 40:56Speaker 9: to ruin it.
- 40:57Speaker 10: I mean, I have to say.
- 40:58Speaker 5: It's going to be like Batman where you have to
- 41:00Speaker 5: have two villains.
- 41:01Speaker 9: It's what it is. It's like six monsters, a Godzuki,
- 41:05Speaker 9: Rodan's going to show up. It's going to be horrible.
- 41:06Speaker 10: Sinister Six is going to show up. That is kind
- 41:10Speaker 10: of where we're going with this, right?
- 41:11Speaker 9: Number three will be destroy all monsters. And I'll actually
- 41:13Speaker 9: be like, oh, I'm going to hate those, but I'm
- 41:14Speaker 9: going to go see it anyways.
- 41:16Speaker 10: Finally, we've made our way there.
- 41:17Speaker 9: I want King Ghidorah to be in number two.
- 41:19Speaker 10: I mean, that's the thing. You have to wonder where
- 41:21Speaker 10: they're going now.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Because they did probably a smart move of not starting
- 41:25Speaker 2: with established monsters, other than, you know, we need to
- 41:28Speaker 2: build Godzilla into something, but just kind of making up random, whatever,
- 41:31Speaker 2: just something for him to beat up.
- 41:32Speaker 9: I was let down with the monsters at first, but then,
- 41:33Speaker 9: like you, they kind of drew on me.
- 41:35Speaker 10: They're pretty good.
- 41:35Speaker 9: They're pretty awesome.
- 41:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 41:37Speaker 9: Glad, actually, because going into it, I was like, you
- 41:39Speaker 9: see in the trailer, and you're like, is that a tentacle?
- 41:41Speaker 9: What the fuck is that? I don't know that monster.
- 41:44Speaker 9: That's not any of the lore. And I'm like, this
- 41:46Speaker 9: is going to be awful. And then you see them,
- 41:47Speaker 9: and you're like, yeah, they're not too bad. That's pretty cool.
- 41:49Speaker 9: They did a good job. I like the hive. What
- 41:51Speaker 9: was the thing in the beginning? The skeleton. Was that
- 41:53Speaker 9: a Godzilla? Or was it another monster?
- 41:55Speaker 10: See, that's the thing.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Trying to figure out where did those two come from? So,
- 42:01Speaker 2: the one that they dig out was hibernating, right? Are
- 42:04Speaker 2: we assuming that was the one?
- 42:05Speaker 10: The other one was.
- 42:07Speaker 2: waiting so where was the other one at that point
- 42:09Speaker 2: they had like the male was the one that.
- 42:12Speaker 9: In nevada they found it and dragged.
- 42:14Speaker 2: It but i thought that one was the one that
- 42:16Speaker 2: was hibernating again they don't make this stuff very clear.
- 42:19Speaker 9: That's why the second movie we need from the standpoint
- 42:21Speaker 9: of the company to explain and and maybe an opening
- 42:25Speaker 9: scene where the ferris bueller kid is shot in the
- 42:28Speaker 9: head or stepped on like the bambi.
- 42:31Speaker 2: But this is the thing like why like in something
- 42:33Speaker 2: that it's not like it just cuts straight to the
- 42:35Speaker 2: action in a movie that builds up for like an
- 42:37Speaker 2: hour and 15 minutes.
- 42:39Speaker 10: Should we have this many questions of like, wait, where
- 42:41Speaker 10: was he? And why was this?
- 42:43Speaker 2: And like, we should, for that much of them spilling out,
- 42:46Speaker 2: you know, backstory and some sort of setup, we should know.
- 42:49Speaker 10: Everything backwards and forwards. And we're still like, but where
- 42:52Speaker 10: did he?
- 42:53Speaker 2: Yeah. So I don't, I don't understand why there's that
- 42:56Speaker 2: much left for us to figure out when we spent
- 42:59Speaker 2: all that time building up some sort of story that.
- 43:02Speaker 10: Isn't necessarily there.
- 43:04Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 43:05Speaker 10: I don't understand that. If you're going to have that
- 43:07Speaker 10: much story, we should know what's going on.
- 43:11Speaker 5: So which did you prefer then? Did you prefer Godzilla
- 43:14Speaker 5: or did you prefer Pacific Rim?
- 43:16Speaker 9: Shit on Pacific Rim. And shit on that Australian kid.
- 43:21Speaker 10: See, by the end, I still like Godzilla better. And
- 43:24Speaker 10: that's kind of a slam.
- 43:25Speaker 2: I didn't dislike Pacific Rim, but there was something so
- 43:28Speaker 2: off about the way they did their people. By the end,
- 43:32Speaker 2: I think Godzilla as the As the Godzilla comes out,
- 43:36Speaker 2: he sort of redeems all of that other stuff.
- 43:38Speaker 10: Where I never felt like I got that with Pacific Rim.
- 43:40Speaker 10: It was a bunch of fun fighting. I enjoyed it.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I'm glad I saw it in the theater on the
- 43:44Speaker 2: big screen. That was the way to see something like that.
- 43:47Speaker 2: But it was kind of gone. I don't even think
- 43:49Speaker 2: about those fight scenes. I can't even remember any specifics.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Whereas I'm still like the finishing moves for both of
- 43:56Speaker 2: them on Godzilla.
- 43:57Speaker 10: I'm still thinking about those. And I probably will be
- 43:59Speaker 10: next year at this time.
- 44:00Speaker 2: I'm just like, that was badass. I don't have that
- 44:02Speaker 2: with Pacific Rim. I just kind of like, yeah, I
- 44:05Speaker 2: saw it.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Pacific Rim was made for the eight-year-old kid in me
- 44:08Speaker 5: who had the action figure robot on one hand and
- 44:11Speaker 5: a monster in the other hand and just.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Bashing them together on the floor.
- 44:15Speaker 5: But yeah, I think Godzilla, they tried to legitimize the
- 44:20Speaker 5: genre somewhat.
- 44:22Speaker 3: But unfortunately, it just really, really left me cold.
- 44:26Speaker 10: Again, I don't mind doing that. I just don't understand
- 44:29Speaker 10: why they take it down that road in the middle there.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Like, I think what they were doing, well, what they
- 44:33Speaker 2: were doing, well, no, what they were doing with the,
- 44:36Speaker 2: the Brian Cranston set up. Like, I feel like that
- 44:38Speaker 2: was pretty smart and that almost was legitimizing. Like you
- 44:41Speaker 2: do feel like he's got something at stake.
- 44:44Speaker 8: He does.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Like there is some seriousness to his, like, you know,
- 44:47Speaker 2: after we already see the lose the wife, but then
- 44:49Speaker 2: that whole him going crazy and kind of building this
- 44:52Speaker 2: world of like, trying to figure out this mystery of
- 44:54Speaker 2: what's happening and the timing of it all.
- 44:56Speaker 9: The echolocation thing should have been more important. It should have, yeah.
- 44:58Speaker 9: It should have not been them trying to mate.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Why were they, yeah, and why was he, you know,
- 45:03Speaker 2: spending so much of his time putting that together and
- 45:06Speaker 2: then we don't get to see him finalize that, nor
- 45:08Speaker 2: does the movie really finalize it.
- 45:11Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 45:11Speaker 2: I feel like if we stuck with him, like we
- 45:13Speaker 2: were saying, and given him more to do, not written
- 45:16Speaker 2: him out immediately, not focused on the kid or the wife, again,
- 45:20Speaker 2: we're building up this melodrama between them But I'm like,
- 45:23Speaker 2: we haven't even seen enough of them. I mean, they
- 45:25Speaker 2: haven't seen each other for more than five minutes in
- 45:27Speaker 2: the last several years. So we don't have anything invested
- 45:31Speaker 2: because we haven't seen them together.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Do you think Gareth Edwards was just trying to be non-formula?
- 45:37Speaker 5: Like trying to shake it up a bit?
- 45:40Speaker 10: But it feels so foreign.
- 45:40Speaker 2: That middle area felt like the two people being apart
- 45:44Speaker 2: from each other the whole time. And every once in
- 45:45Speaker 2: a while they talk on the phone or they like.
- 45:47Speaker 2: I'm going to wait around here for my husband. And
- 45:49Speaker 2: by the way, who ditches their kid with somebody else?
- 45:51Speaker 10: Would you just randomly pass your new child off to
- 45:53Speaker 10: somebody and be like, I'm going to go away. You
- 45:55Speaker 10: stay over there with them now. What kind of mother
- 45:58Speaker 10: is that? You stay with your child.
- 46:01Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 46:02Speaker 10: That rubbed me the wrong way, too.
- 46:04Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like that middle part is very, like, normal,
- 46:08Speaker 2: by the numbers, like, disaster movie. It just feels like
- 46:10Speaker 2: it could be any Roland Emmerich movie that came along,
- 46:13Speaker 2: not Godzilla. It could be any day after tomorrow where
- 46:16Speaker 2: it's like, oh, the couple that we wish they were together,
- 46:19Speaker 2: but there's this stupid world falling apart and they just
- 46:21Speaker 2: can't get it together.
- 46:22Speaker 10: But by the end, they will. Don't you worry. Hang
- 46:24Speaker 10: in there.
- 46:25Speaker 2: That felt very cookie cutter to me as far as
- 46:27Speaker 2: like disaster movie, which is what most movies are at
- 46:30Speaker 2: this point.
- 46:31Speaker 10: We continue to crank out disaster movies and that just felt.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Like your little filler area in the middle there. Like
- 46:37Speaker 2: we got to pretend like there's relationships to be worried about,
- 46:40Speaker 2: but we don't really feel anything for either of them,
- 46:43Speaker 2: which is really good. difficult when it's so damn good.
- 46:47Speaker 2: I really wish they would have given her more to do.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Can we cut out dorky kid and like make her
- 46:51Speaker 2: like be the, yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 10: Could she just, well, no.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Or can she just come in and be like another
- 46:56Speaker 2: scientist that's working with Brian Cranston and that, you know,
- 46:59Speaker 2: we focus on them or the other people they bring in.
- 47:01Speaker 10: We, we focus on the, the guy that works for.
- 47:03Speaker 2: The company or the, who's the other woman they brought
- 47:06Speaker 2: in that just every once in a while would show up.
- 47:08Speaker 10: And spout off details.
- 47:09Speaker 9: Kim Watanabe's chick.
- 47:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:11Speaker 2: I'm like, well, she just kind of comes out of
- 47:12Speaker 2: nowhere and like, Oh, yeah, here's a fact. All right,
- 47:16Speaker 2: I'll be over here for 20 minutes. And then she'd
- 47:17Speaker 2: come back in later and like, why do we get
- 47:20Speaker 2: these little pieces of those relationships and we don't.
- 47:22Speaker 10: Build any characters whatsoever? But I don't know. I don't
- 47:26Speaker 10: feel like it was that unusual.
- 47:28Speaker 2: What part do you think was being sort of atypical
- 47:31Speaker 2: of movies of that type?
- 47:33Speaker 3: No, I was just playing devil's advocate.
- 47:37Speaker 10: I usually do that too. We're reversing on ourselves now.
- 47:41Speaker 10: The snake is eating its own tail.
- 47:44Speaker 5: No, I mean, my preference would have been to build
- 47:48Speaker 5: characters that you follow through the whole adventure. You stick
- 47:53Speaker 5: with them and you want them to succeed. But he
- 47:57Speaker 5: doesn't really give us that.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Brian Crescent, gone. His kid, I actually was starting to
- 48:04Speaker 3: pray that he would die.
- 48:07Speaker 5: Just kill him off already and let's jump onto another
- 48:09Speaker 5: character and follow them instead.
- 48:11Speaker 7: Elizabeth.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I mean, would it have been more interesting to, and again,
- 48:17Speaker 2: this would be something you wouldn't see coming. What if
- 48:19Speaker 2: the dad lives, kills the kid? So now he's lost
- 48:22Speaker 2: mom and his own child.
- 48:23Speaker 9: I'm going to kill that monster.
- 48:25Speaker 2: And then, like, that would fuel him for the whole
- 48:27Speaker 2: rest of the movie because that I wouldn't see coming.
- 48:29Speaker 10: I'd be like, whoa, they just killed that kid? Like,
- 48:32Speaker 10: our main army lead guy? Like, you wouldn't see that coming.
- 48:36Speaker 10: So that would have been way more interesting, I feel like.
- 48:40Speaker 3: And every other relative he has.
- 48:43Speaker 9: Just beat this poor bastard.
- 48:45Speaker 3: He's just going after you.
- 48:46Speaker 2: He follows him to Jamaica. Grant Cranston's like, I just
- 48:51Speaker 2: want to take a vacation. There's Godzilla popping his head
- 48:53Speaker 2: up out of the water.
- 48:55Speaker 10: Damn you.
- 48:57Speaker 9: My most upset part about it is when there are
- 48:59Speaker 9: three movies, and number two and number three are connected,
- 49:02Speaker 9: and number one is a standalone piece of shit that
- 49:04Speaker 9: we all hate. I'm really upset about that. And part
- 49:08Speaker 9: of me was for some reason hoping that it was
- 49:10Speaker 9: going to be an end of the world. Like I
- 49:12Speaker 9: was actually hoping for the role in Emmerich, like Godzilla
- 49:15Speaker 9: and the monsters are fighting and it's actually destroying the
- 49:18Speaker 9: entire world. So by the third, one, it was like
- 49:21Speaker 9: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with dinosaurs in the background and
- 49:25Speaker 9: shit going crazy. But now it's just going to be, oh,
- 49:28Speaker 9: the first one, you know, it had ticket sales. So
- 49:31Speaker 9: let's go ahead and do two and three. And Johnny
- 49:34Speaker 9: Depp's going to die at the end of the second one.
- 49:36Speaker 9: And in the third one, he's going to be in
- 49:37Speaker 9: hell with Godzilla and Godzilla.
- 49:40Speaker 10: Okay, wait.
- 49:41Speaker 3: You keep bringing up Katsuki. I love Katsuki.
- 49:45Speaker 9: You know, okay, so here's the other thing. I'm hoping
- 49:48Speaker 9: that we get a Godzilla cartoon again.
- 49:53Speaker 10: A serious one or one like that one?
- 49:56Speaker 3: That one.
- 49:57Speaker 10: Because that was Hanna-Barbera, wasn't it?
- 50:00Speaker 9: That was Hanna-Barbera.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, because I just played some of that recently.
- 50:03Speaker 2: I was like, this is definitely a normal level of
- 50:06Speaker 2: Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
- 50:07Speaker 10: And they jammed Godzilla into it.
- 50:09Speaker 9: They just put him in there.
- 50:10Speaker 10: It's just kind of like, hey, Scoob, look over there.
- 50:12Speaker 10: There's a giant lizard.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Zoinks!
- 50:15Speaker 10: It was pretty Hanna-Barbera.
- 50:18Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Again, I could see them doing something, or it would
- 50:21Speaker 2: be nice to see them do something a little more
- 50:23Speaker 2: serious with it, because that seems like something you could
- 50:25Speaker 2: do in animation that would be really kind of fun
- 50:28Speaker 2: and interesting. And you could take it pretty dark that way, but.
- 50:31Speaker 9: From the artist that brought you the 1992 Batman animated series.
- 50:36Speaker 10: That I will take.
- 50:37Speaker 9: Godzilla Noir.
- 50:38Speaker 10: That I will take. Possibly the best animated series ever.
- 50:42Speaker 8: Yes.
- 50:43Speaker 10: Yeah, that one is awesome. So I would be glad
- 50:46Speaker 10: to have that.
- 50:47Speaker 2: So I don't know. Where do we stand on this
- 50:50Speaker 2: all together? You guys don't like it at all. I mean,
- 50:52Speaker 2: it doesn't redeem it.
- 50:53Speaker 9: I can't wait to own it on Blu-ray. I can't
- 50:55Speaker 9: wait to watch it all the time.
- 50:56Speaker 10: But you're just going to skip to the last part.
- 50:59Speaker 9: They capitalize on one fact. Like, I grew up– I
- 51:01Speaker 9: was born in 1985. I grew up watching all of
- 51:06Speaker 9: those on VHS, just every one of them over and
- 51:08Speaker 9: over and over again. They capitalized on me, and they
- 51:11Speaker 9: knew it. And they're going to capitalize on me for
- 51:13Speaker 9: two and three, and I'm going to hate all three
- 51:16Speaker 9: of them, but I'm going to watch them every day
- 51:19Speaker 9: that I want to fall asleep on the couch.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Now, do you think they jumped in more in the
- 51:23Speaker 2: middle of the run? Like, again, I was hoping they'd
- 51:25Speaker 2: take it more serious with the first one, which is
- 51:28Speaker 2: kind of how he built it. Like, he was going
- 51:29Speaker 2: to build this thing.
- 51:30Speaker 10: It was going to be a serious movie.
- 51:31Speaker 2: But did he, like, plot-wise, not monster-wise, but plot-wise, does
- 51:34Speaker 2: it fall more into, like, one of the middle run?
- 51:37Speaker 9: It's post-Godzilla 1985, if you will.
- 51:39Speaker 10: No Raymond Burr.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Well, yeah.
- 51:41Speaker 9: Where's Raymond Burr? But, yeah, it's, like, so much story,
- 51:44Speaker 9: not too much monsters, but we're after the joking 70s monsters, right? Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Again that's something you almost need to decide on that's
- 51:54Speaker 2: why I thought initially it was kind of good that
- 51:56Speaker 2: was one of the things I was thinking as people
- 51:58Speaker 2: were like I could feel people already getting upset with
- 52:00Speaker 2: it I was like well who did we give it
- 52:02Speaker 2: to yeah I mean we gave it to a guy
- 52:04Speaker 2: who made a movie called Monsters there's hardly any monsters
- 52:08Speaker 2: it's about a freaking relationship.
- 52:10Speaker 10: Like so it's kind of our own fault for.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Giving it to that guy and expecting him to do
- 52:14Speaker 2: any different like he's only made one feature film that
- 52:17Speaker 2: was it that's what he did last time like I
- 52:20Speaker 2: don't know.
- 52:20Speaker 10: I feel like that was kind of like.
- 52:22Speaker 9: Your other option was for it to just be Guillermo
- 52:25Speaker 9: del Toro does Godzilla.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Which, again, can we get these two together? Can we
- 52:29Speaker 2: get them to make a crossover movie and be like,
- 52:32Speaker 2: you handle all the fighting. You handle a little bit
- 52:35Speaker 2: more plot development, but not too much, and let's bring
- 52:37Speaker 2: somebody else in to write a little better.
- 52:39Speaker 9: For some of these characters. And just let Ron Perlman
- 52:40Speaker 9: do whatever Ron Perlman wants.
- 52:41Speaker 2: And let Ron Perlman do whatever he wants, because he's
- 52:43Speaker 2: what saved that part. I could just watch Ron Perlman
- 52:45Speaker 2: be a weirdo for an hour and a half, so... Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 2: can we cross over these areas and let Pacific Rim
- 52:51Speaker 2: fight with Godzilla?
- 52:52Speaker 9: I'm really worried about the monsters, because that's what it is.
- 52:55Speaker 9: We know Godzilla's going to be there. We know the
- 52:57Speaker 9: military's going to be there. But we don't know what
- 52:59Speaker 9: monster's going to be there. And what if there's no monster?
- 53:03Speaker 9: Because you know that's what they're thinking. They're like, everybody's
- 53:05Speaker 9: worried about the monster. Let's go. Godzilla versus environmental catastrophe.
- 53:09Speaker 2: See, I thought that's what this was going to be.
- 53:11Speaker 2: I thought they would start the first one with no monster.
- 53:13Speaker 2: And we would focus on, again, we'd have to do
- 53:15Speaker 2: an origin story. We'd focus on him. And then he'd
- 53:17Speaker 2: fight with the military the whole time. And then they'd
- 53:20Speaker 2: set it up so the sequel would bring in monsters.
- 53:22Speaker 2: So it already is odd. I don't know how you
- 53:24Speaker 2: get out of monsters now. You could almost do it
- 53:26Speaker 2: the first run. They've gotten so much, especially after Pacific Rim.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I think so many people are waiting for monster on
- 53:32Speaker 2: monster fighting. It would be hard for them to yank
- 53:35Speaker 2: that out of the middle of the pond.
- 53:36Speaker 9: I hope they don't do two Godzillas. Like, there's a Godzilla. Yeah,
- 53:40Speaker 9: if they do that, I hope not.
- 53:41Speaker 5: It'll be Mecha Godzilla.
- 53:45Speaker 9: Here's what I was thinking when I was like, shit, man,
- 53:47Speaker 9: they're going to make Godzilla. It's going to be great.
- 53:49Speaker 9: I was sitting there thinking, like, all the old ones
- 53:51Speaker 9: that I watched, because I was definitely in that age
- 53:53Speaker 9: bracket where I watched the old ones. But I'd seen
- 53:55Speaker 9: a lot of newer movies, so I'm like, I understand
- 53:57Speaker 9: that it's a guy in a costume and it's a
- 53:59Speaker 9: little rough, but I love it. And I remember watching
- 54:02Speaker 9: those being like, man, if they made this now, Mechagodzilla, like,
- 54:05Speaker 9: think of the Transformers. That's what it's going to look like.
- 54:08Speaker 9: It's too computer generated. It's too CG. But it's like.
- 54:12Speaker 10: You did nothing in that. Like, you have nothing in that.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 54:15Speaker 10: At least this, that's kind of what I like there.
- 54:17Speaker 2: That's sort of what redeemed the movie with that last
- 54:20Speaker 2: fight is I still felt like there was something there.
- 54:22Speaker 10: There was a little.
- 54:23Speaker 2: something fighting each other where I never get that with Transformers. Transformers,
- 54:27Speaker 2: it's so ridiculously pieced together and edited and shot. You
- 54:31Speaker 2: can't even tell what they're doing like this, at least
- 54:33Speaker 2: as a fight scene function, because you knew where the
- 54:36Speaker 2: creatures were. You knew what they were doing. You knew
- 54:38Speaker 2: how it came together as a fight scene. Like the
- 54:42Speaker 2: Michael Bay bullshit. Like he just doesn't even know how
- 54:44Speaker 2: to shoot a fight scene, especially anymore. Like he's gotten
- 54:47Speaker 2: worse and worse as they've thrown more money and more
- 54:49Speaker 2: CG at him that he just doesn't even know how to,
- 54:52Speaker 2: put together a scene anymore but like at least this
- 54:55Speaker 2: i felt worked as an action sequence as a fight
- 54:57Speaker 2: scene that last run.
- 54:59Speaker 10: It needs it needs more of more of that throughout the.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Whole movie but i think yeah everybody feels 50 50
- 55:05Speaker 2: with the next one it's.
- 55:06Speaker 9: Gonna give them cancer they get god damn it it's
- 55:09Speaker 9: gotta be build up first half of the movie and
- 55:12Speaker 9: then they're just in the city nobody's going anywhere and
- 55:15Speaker 9: it's just run because buildings are coming.
- 55:17Speaker 10: Down Yeah, it is funny how much destruction goes on
- 55:22Speaker 10: with the city.
- 55:22Speaker 9: And we don't really see anything.
- 55:23Speaker 10: And we don't see anything. And we don't, like, there's
- 55:26Speaker 10: no catastrophe.
- 55:27Speaker 2: It's not, like, again, this is sort of, in this
- 55:29Speaker 2: post-9-11 world, when buildings fall down, it's a big fucking deal.
- 55:32Speaker 10: Like, it's a horrible thing. So we don't get that.
- 55:35Speaker 10: It's still pretty fun in this one.
- 55:37Speaker 3: There you go.
- 55:37Speaker 9: The next movie, the main character, he works for FEMA.
- 55:40Speaker 9: That's what it's going to be.
- 55:42Speaker 10: Well, that's what I was amazed with. How much.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Who's going to clean up this shit?
- 55:45Speaker 8: Me?
- 55:45Speaker 5: No.
- 55:47Speaker 10: That's what I thought was funny. In this one, I
- 55:51Speaker 10: actually liked how much of a good guy they made him.
- 55:54Speaker 10: It's so ridiculous.
- 55:55Speaker 2: It's so ridiculous what a hero he is when he
- 55:58Speaker 2: just parades out to sea there. Fuck our city.
- 56:02Speaker 9: Because you don't have any people he steps on just to.
- 56:04Speaker 10: Leave the city.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, fuck them.
- 56:05Speaker 2: You guys have been fighting him the entire rest of
- 56:08Speaker 2: this time. You've been worried about how much he's going
- 56:10Speaker 2: to destroy everything. He and the other two monsters have
- 56:13Speaker 2: just been tearing up cities.
- 56:14Speaker 10: All over this world.
- 56:16Speaker 2: And yet by the end, it's, yay, Godzilla. Which, again,
- 56:19Speaker 2: comes back to more of the middle run of the Godzilla.
- 56:22Speaker 2: It really was very, very, you know, yeah, he's your friend.
- 56:26Speaker 10: He's your pal. I mean, he's a little kid sidekick. Oh, wait,
- 56:28Speaker 10: he's got one in this movie.
- 56:30Speaker 2: So they're just going to go off on adventures together.
- 56:32Speaker 2: It has a very cheesy feel that I almost liked,
- 56:35Speaker 2: but I don't even know how you do that. I
- 56:37Speaker 2: don't know how that is not ridiculous. I really expected
- 56:40Speaker 2: him to be more of fighting the military and us
- 56:42Speaker 2: to be.
- 56:44Speaker 10: Trying to destroy him equally as much as the other monsters.
- 56:47Speaker 9: There shouldn't have been monsters in the first one. It
- 56:49Speaker 9: should have been Godzilla versus the microwave dish on the
- 56:51Speaker 9: back of a car. Do you think they're going to
- 56:54Speaker 9: do King Kong? I really hope they don't do King Kong.
- 56:56Speaker 10: That would take a lot of licensing.
- 56:58Speaker 9: That's a slippery slope. What if, since this movie really
- 57:02Speaker 9: destroyed San Francisco, in the second one, he revisits San Francisco.
- 57:06Speaker 9: They've rebuilt San Francisco, and it looks like the Star
- 57:10Speaker 9: Trek San Francisco crossover. And then there's Klingons.
- 57:15Speaker 2: We do need to reboot a whole new Star Trek series, right?
- 57:18Speaker 2: I mean, we're tying in this new one now, so.
- 57:22Speaker 2: Have we seen much of San Francisco.
- 57:25Speaker 10: In that new run of them? We did a lot
- 57:27Speaker 10: on that.
- 57:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 57:29Speaker 10: Then they started destroying stuff again.
- 57:31Speaker 9: Throw a starship at it.
- 57:34Speaker 10: So can we have like the Enterprise fighting Godzilla? I'd
- 57:38Speaker 10: watch that.
- 57:39Speaker 3: Only the Enterprise transforms into a robot.
- 57:43Speaker 9: There you go.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 57:44Speaker 5: What do you call a crossover when it's three?
- 57:51Speaker 9: It's open universe.
- 57:53Speaker 10: Trilogy of insanity.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Then the Transformers show up to fight against the transforming
- 58:01Speaker 2: Starship Enterprise.
- 58:02Speaker 3: Autobots.
- 58:03Speaker 5: It's like a five-year-old kid pitching a movie.
- 58:05Speaker 10: But who can save us? The Avengers, that's who.
- 58:09Speaker 9: Avengers World Police.
- 58:11Speaker 10: Thank God we have. So, yeah, did we want to
- 58:14Speaker 10: get to that?
- 58:15Speaker 2: You did say if you wait until the end of
- 58:17Speaker 2: the credit sequence, Samuel L.
- 58:18Speaker 10: Jackson shows up and he's like, Godzilla, we need your help.
- 58:23Speaker 10: We need you to join our team. He's like, I
- 58:24Speaker 10: don't work well with a team. I'm a rogue lizard.
- 58:29Speaker 9: We're looking for a monster that says bad motherfucker.
- 58:34Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 58:35Speaker 7: Where was your lead in?
- 58:36Speaker 9: Actually, now that I think about it, if Samuel L.
- 58:38Speaker 9: Jackson was in the Godzilla movie, it would have been
- 58:41Speaker 9: fine because he saved Robocop.
- 58:43Speaker 10: It should have been like he was the new Raymond Burr.
- 58:45Speaker 9: Yeah, oh my God.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Look over there.
- 58:47Speaker 9: Motherfucking lizard.
- 58:48Speaker 3: That's a pissed off Raymond Burr.
- 58:51Speaker 9: There's a motherfucking lizard in a motherfucking city.
- 58:54Speaker 10: Motherfucking lizard tearing up a motherfucking city. I will kill
- 58:58Speaker 10: all of you.
- 59:01Speaker 2: He just gets a rocket launcher and does it single-handedly.
- 59:05Speaker 10: Look, you guys, watch this. Just takes out both of
- 59:08Speaker 10: the aliens. I can see that, yeah.
- 59:12Speaker 3: I'd watch that. I'd watch that.
- 59:13Speaker 10: Let's get Samuel on board with this. I'm going to
- 59:16Speaker 10: fire him my own message here.
- 59:19Speaker 9: I'll text him, you get a purple lightsaber.
- 59:21Speaker 3: Done. Done.
- 59:23Speaker 10: Yeah, we didn't work that one into our crossover.
- 59:25Speaker 9: We had to have missed that.
- 59:26Speaker 10: Samuel L. Jackson shows up, dressed like Shaft, with a
- 59:29Speaker 10: purple lightsaber.
- 59:30Speaker 9: It's off Godzilla's hand. Godzilla's like, no!
- 59:34Speaker 10: It's impossible! So, where do we think we're going with
- 59:38Speaker 10: our post-credits sequence?
- 59:42Speaker 9: As complete and utter bullshit?
- 59:45Speaker 10: Go for it.
- 59:46Speaker 9: The mountain that they go and look for the nuclear
- 59:50Speaker 9: stuff in, and half the mountain's blown off, The camera
- 59:53Speaker 9: pans out of that cell, goes into the cell next door,
- 59:57Speaker 9: and there's a cryogenically frozen Mothra larvae.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: Operation larvae.
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:00:06Speaker 9: Did you notice that Mothra did actually have a cameo
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: in the movie?
- 1:00:10Speaker 10: It's on the jar, isn't it?
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: Yeah, in the childhood bedroom.
- 1:00:14Speaker 10: So they're setting that up, right?
- 1:00:16Speaker 9: They're setting it up. Hey, there was nuclear fallout in
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: that place.
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: Where he was sitting.
- 1:00:20Speaker 11: In Fukushima.
- 1:00:21Speaker 10: Mm-hmm. I think we see it all coming together right now.
- 1:00:25Speaker 9: I just don't know how you do Mothra. And Mothra's
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: not a bad guy. What's Godzilla like? Yep, you're making
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: a hurricane with your wings.
- 1:00:32Speaker 10: Dude, cut it out.
- 1:00:33Speaker 9: Ain't nobody got time for that. Godzilla versus welfare.
- 1:00:38Speaker 10: So do they team up then? So then it's like
- 1:00:41Speaker 10: Mothra versus Mechagodzilla.
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: That's what it's going to be. It's going to be
- 1:00:44Speaker 9: the U.S. government is afraid that Godzilla might go rogue
- 1:00:47Speaker 9: and trample another city. So we designed a mechanical one
- 1:00:51Speaker 9: that looks exactly like it.
- 1:00:53Speaker 10: Or Team Godzilla.
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Just a bunch of guys in a big Godzilla suit.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: And they come out and a few hundred guys move
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: their right leg, a few hundred guys move their left leg.
- 1:01:03Speaker 10: And he's kind of Mecha Godzilla. I think this is
- 1:01:06Speaker 10: all coming together.
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: Yeah, in the second one there will be a Godzilla friend.
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: It'll be Godzilla and Mothra, probably.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: Mecha Mothra.
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: Mecha Mothra.
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: Oh, that's what we need.
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: Versus Mecha Rodan. And Mecha King Ghidorah.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:01:21Speaker 10: Can we Mecha anything else?
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Huh? Mecha the Golden Gate Ridge and make it come
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: to life and fight with people.
- 1:01:27Speaker 9: I feel like since this one did so well, though,
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: they're probably going to green light the Gamera movie.
- 1:01:33Speaker 10: Will we have crossover?
- 1:01:35Speaker 9: Gamera versus Godzilla. Shell versus Spying Spike.
- 1:01:41Speaker 10: Shell goes to hell.
- 1:01:42Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:01:42Speaker 10: We've got to get a tagline going on this. Come on.
- 1:01:46Speaker 10: Heroes in a half... Oh, wait. That's already.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Damn.
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: That's going to be awful.
- 1:01:50Speaker 10: That's already been ruined by him, too.
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: That Gamera versus the Ninja Turtles.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: We did leave them out of that last scenario. Can
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: we have Gamera bite the head off of Michael Bay?
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Is that the opening shot? Because I'd be okay with that.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: That would be amazing. No, then we'll just have April
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: O'Neil running around chasing the story, and it will be
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: like the 98 guns.
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: Oh, God.
- 1:02:16Speaker 10: We need a reporter to follow around for the whole
- 1:02:18Speaker 10: damn movie. And Hank Azera for some reason.
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: He was really good in that. No, I can't wear
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: the shoes. I only know how to do the cleaning.
- 1:02:28Speaker 10: God sakes.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Is it the wrong movie?
- 1:02:32Speaker 10: It's sad that that was a real thing in our lifetime.
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: That was an amazing film. It's better than the Godzilla movie.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: It's another one of those I don't understand how it happened.
- 1:02:43Speaker 10: Alright, so everyone's looking forward to the sequel. That's what
- 1:02:48Speaker 10: we take from this. I kind of am. I mean,
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: that's where I stand.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: By the end of it, I'm like, the last fight
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: almost redeems the bad that's the middle of this movie.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: And like, I want to see where it's going next.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: I don't hate that character. I don't hate that fighting.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Let's just do it in a better scenario.
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: You think about how.
- 1:03:12Speaker 9: I want to.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: I'm going straight out the door.
- 1:03:14Speaker 10: I'm out of here. I'm out of here.
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: Direct to sci-fi.
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: And I'm taking this popcorn with me.
- 1:03:19Speaker 9: But it's hilarious because it's like you think about how
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: much you bitch about it and how awful the film
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: it was. You'll watch it more times in your life
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: than Pacific Rim.
- 1:03:26Speaker 8: I will.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: I mean, that's what I'm saying. I like that last
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: fight scene so much. I'll just skip to that chapter
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: every time. But I was more impressed with that than
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: the forgettable fights in Pacific Rim.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: I've already seen Pacific Rim more times than I've seen Godzilla.
- 1:03:43Speaker 10: You've had a year, though. In your lifetime, which will
- 1:03:48Speaker 10: you watch more?
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: Pacific Rim?
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: I think so, actually. I think so.
- 1:03:52Speaker 10: Will you be showing the kid Pacific Rim coming up?
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Most likely.
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: It's more fighting?
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: It speaks to my inner child, you know? If I
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: have to watch.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: Godzilla again, I'll be slicing open my wrist.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 1:04:07Speaker 10: I'm telling you.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: It was just too little, too late.
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: I really didn't care, you know? I might watch that
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: money shot again.
- 1:04:15Speaker 10: I'm telling you, that last scene, it worked. It was hot.
- 1:04:19Speaker 10: But had it come in at the halfway point, had we.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Gotten a real fight when the doors closed, would that
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: have saved it for you?
- 1:04:25Speaker 10: At that halfway point, would it have redeemed it?
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: Then you have to have something that will top that
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: for the final sequence. So, you know, okay, you can
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: have the oral thing in the middle, and maybe we
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: have the anal thing at the end.
- 1:04:36Speaker 10: Wait, what movie were you watching? I think you were
- 1:04:39Speaker 10: watching something else.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: It's nuclear fire.
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: It's got to go in one way and out the other.
- 1:04:44Speaker 9: Did it really count how many times it happened? It
- 1:04:45Speaker 9: only happened twice. I feel like it should have happened
- 1:04:47Speaker 9: so much more. And it's like, even, and I don't
- 1:04:50Speaker 9: remember the name of it, but like the most recent,
- 1:04:53Speaker 9: I think it's like something bad, like Godzilla Meltdown or whatever,
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: where he's dying, where he's overheating the Japanese one. I
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: don't know. Apparently, I'm the only person that watches it.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Godzilla meltdown?
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: He's dying by overreacting. We sponsored this movie. But when
- 1:05:06Speaker 9: he powers up for the blast, it's the coolest thing ever.
- 1:05:11Speaker 9: And that's one thing that I thought was really missed.
- 1:05:13Speaker 9: And then he didn't, and I was like, I just
- 1:05:14Speaker 9: didn't think they were going to have him fucking breathe
- 1:05:16Speaker 9: fire in this one.
- 1:05:17Speaker 10: Yeah, it goes a long time.
- 1:05:19Speaker 9: It's like if I was Godzilla and I'm getting my
- 1:05:21Speaker 9: ass handed to me three times over, oh, yeah, I
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: got the fire thing.
- 1:05:25Speaker 10: By the way, did I tell you guys I can
- 1:05:27Speaker 10: breathe fire? I've got a nuclear blast.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, I have the sword thing.
- 1:05:33Speaker 9: Oh, God, the sword. When that thing came out, I
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: was like, sweet, why the fuck didn't they use that
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: in the beginning?
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: Finishing move.
- 1:05:42Speaker 10: Suddenly it's Mortal Kombat.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Up, up, down, over, side.
- 1:05:45Speaker 10: Yes, Godzilla wins!
- 1:05:47Speaker 8: Up from the depths, 30 stories high.
- 1:05:50Speaker 11: Free fire, it's head in the sky. Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla. Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla.

- 1:06:36Speaker 7: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music.
- 1:06:40Speaker 13: He was the wizard of a thousand kings. And I
- 1:06:48Speaker 13: chanced to meet him one night wandering.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: So as I said, we've been to the Chicago Wizard
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: World before, so they've got quite a few. They've got
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: a lot.
- 1:07:00Speaker 10: They're all over the country. That's what I was going
- 1:07:02Speaker 10: to say.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Since they're inviting us to hang around here, I thought
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: we would go ahead and give the rundown. That's the
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: difference with this one is it's not just in one city.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: It's something they've done kind of everywhere now. They've sort
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: of taken over. So you can go to wizardworld.com and
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: find out where they are in the near future. The
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: rundown of the upcoming ones, end of May into June,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: is Atlanta. You've got Philadelphia after that, San Antonio, back
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: to Chicago, Richmond. So it's like anywhere in this general
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: part of the country, you know, the United States.
- 1:07:33Speaker 10: Are you stopping at Richmond because we've got more to go?
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: Oh, there's plenty. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:07:37Speaker 10: Nashville, Austin, Ohio.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: I thought Ohio was just generalized.
- 1:07:41Speaker 10: You know, that state.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: But anyway, yes, you can go to wizardworld.com and find
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: out where the next show will be near you.
- 1:07:47Speaker 10: You should definitely go. Come hang out. That's what we're doing.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Definitely check out wizardworld.com for all of your wizard world
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: type needs.
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: This is Dan Ackman. You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: And keep kicking ass, guys.
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: That was terrible. It's part of your problem, you know.
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: And now, on with the show.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Alright, we've pretty much beat Godzilla to death. Is there
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: anything else we'd like to pass along? Any other new
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: movies you'd like to tear into or movements in the
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Hollywood scene you'd like to trash?
- 1:08:57Speaker 11: Oh.
- 1:08:59Speaker 10: What's coming up next anything we're looking forward to.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: So you haven't seen X-Men right no I haven't seen X-Men.
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: Are you an X-Men fan not really no well okay
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: let me backtrack I like the last.
- 1:09:11Speaker 9: One oh okay so like X-Men fan of.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: Comic books oh the comic books not really.
- 1:09:17Speaker 9: Or like the story arc or anything Not really.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Although, as a bit of trivia, my mom was in
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: the third one, I think.
- 1:09:27Speaker 11: Nice.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Yeah, she was an extra. And it's one of these cases.
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: That you'll never be able to pick her up. Nice.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: But she's in the, who's it? Jean Grey that dies?
- 1:09:41Speaker 10: Spoiler alert. And Leupold.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Anyways, my mom's in the funeral scene.
- 1:09:47Speaker 10: She kills Jean Grey. She attends her funeral.
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Mom attends her funeral.
- 1:09:51Speaker 9: Have you seen it? The new one?
- 1:09:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:09:56Speaker 9: I think it's a very difficult story to translate from
- 1:10:00Speaker 9: comic book to film. I think it would leave so
- 1:10:03Speaker 9: many people unhappy. I think they did a really good job.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Okay, you're talking about just the story overall or this
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: specific story that they wrote for this screenplay?
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: This screenplay, but also this screenplay and concert with all
- 1:10:16Speaker 9: of the movies. It has fucked up everything.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: It is interesting how much they totally attach themselves to
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: the old, because usually you get this far in on
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: a series, they're like, let's just cut this loose and
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: start over.
- 1:10:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: So they're almost Star Trek-ing it. They kind of are like, okay,
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: we're going to embrace the idea of what's been going on,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: but we're kind of going to do our own thing completely.
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: I think in the one thing, I mean, everybody's going
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: to argue. I know you haven't seen it, and I'm
- 1:10:40Speaker 9: sorry about things that are about.
- 1:10:41Speaker 10: To be said.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: Are you going to spoil it?
- 1:10:43Speaker 9: The Jean Grey film.
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: La, la, la, la, la, la, la.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: This is going to ruin this on the radio.
- 1:10:47Speaker 9: So the thing that upsets me the most. I'm done ruining.
- 1:10:51Speaker 9: The thing that upsets me the most isn't that they're
- 1:10:53Speaker 9: bringing back people that are dead or changing the story
- 1:10:55Speaker 9: the way that they're changing it. It's the fact that, like,
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: Hugh Jackman's getting so ripped in this one that why
- 1:11:01Speaker 9: wasn't he this ripped in the first one? It's just, like,
- 1:11:03Speaker 9: consistency errors.
- 1:11:04Speaker 10: You're throwing off continuity.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: I know, continuity errors, man.
- 1:11:07Speaker 10: Overripped this.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: I think he's just trying to fight the fact that
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: he's now, like, what, 15 years older?
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: So it's like.
- 1:11:15Speaker 10: For a man that doesn't age?
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Because I was thinking that as they get into this
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: story and I'm like.
- 1:11:19Speaker 10: He's going to get older.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: He's going to get old eventually. How are you guys
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: going to explain that? Are you going to start CGing
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: his face? I mean, he's, you know, guys have a
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: little more of a run. Sometimes you can still seem
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: not so old when you're in your 50s. So you
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: can skate by for an extra 10 years maybe, but.
- 1:11:33Speaker 10: We've already killed about ten years in this last run
- 1:11:36Speaker 10: since the third one.
- 1:11:36Speaker 9: I'm just so excited.
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: Well, they've already had a history of seeking.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: They did Patrick Stewart.
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: Going backwards. So, I mean, they can. If they can
- 1:11:47Speaker 10: make it work, more power to them. It's just interesting
- 1:11:50Speaker 10: how it plays out.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: So, I don't know.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: I think for you it's definitely worth seeing.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: But, yeah.
- 1:11:56Speaker 9: Watch the after credit scene. That movie has one. It
- 1:11:59Speaker 9: gives me a fan heart on.
- 1:12:00Speaker 10: We knew it was coming.
- 1:12:04Speaker 9: I thought that they would never have the balls to
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: do it, and they're doing it, and I'm so excited
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: about it.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: So for extra nerd points here, what do you think
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: about the fact that... So they're owned by different companies,
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: but now they're going to have sort of characters that
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: fall into both.
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: They're never going to put the other people together with
- 1:12:20Speaker 9: the other.
- 1:12:21Speaker 10: People, though. I thought they already did, though. I thought
- 1:12:22Speaker 10: they already in the lead-up at the end of.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Captain America 2, I thought they already had.
- 1:12:27Speaker 9: Oh, and they are played by the same people?
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: No, I think they're going to be the same characters
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: in two different sets of movies, but two different.
- 1:12:34Speaker 10: Sets of actors playing them. That's what's really weird. That's
- 1:12:37Speaker 10: going to be strange.
- 1:12:38Speaker 9: That's going to be very confusing for the children.
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: Yeah. But, again, kids adapt.
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: I don't understand why Marvel at this point, like, Marvel
- 1:12:47Speaker 9: has made so much money. I don't understand why they
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: would not double down and just be like, we're going
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: to buy X-Men and Spider-Man. And here's all of our
- 1:12:56Speaker 9: billions of dollars because we're going to make it back 11-fold.
- 1:12:59Speaker 10: And they have Disney money now. You think they could
- 1:13:02Speaker 10: just be like, okay, Sony, let's talk.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: How do we get Spider-Man to do a crossover with
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: the Avengers?
- 1:13:09Speaker 10: You seem like that needs to, you know. Again, I
- 1:13:11Speaker 10: don't even know if that's a good idea.
- 1:13:13Speaker 9: Did you see Spider-Man 2?
- 1:13:14Speaker 10: I've avoided it so far.
- 1:13:15Speaker 9: Okay, so here's the deal. Spider-Man has proved himself once
- 1:13:18Speaker 9: again that he does not need standalone movies. Just like
- 1:13:20Speaker 9: the Hulk. These people need to be in movies with
- 1:13:23Speaker 9: other people, mainly Robert Downey Jr.
- 1:13:25Speaker 10: That's what's funny, like, with the Hulk. I've said this
- 1:13:28Speaker 10: a few times now.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: I'm just like, it's funny how much, like, doesn't work
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: by himself. Doesn't work by himself. makes that freaking movie
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: like everybody loves him in Avengers he's like he steals
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: the show.
- 1:13:38Speaker 9: So much that they're like oh let's make a standalone.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Movie and you know that's gonna kill it people are
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: like nobody cares about him by himself but as a
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: guy that comes in and saves the scene two or
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: three times in that movie like you're just like that
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: makes him so awesome so yeah there are kind of
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: I don't know Spider-Man seems like he's a strong enough
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: character he can do he.
- 1:13:56Speaker 9: Should be able to carry a movie but they ruin it.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Every fucking time they ruin it well that's I still
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: blame Garfield for that him and his fucking lasagna keep
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: ruining this movie. So I don't know. I, I think
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: it would be interesting if they already, is it time.
- 1:14:09Speaker 10: To reboot yet?
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: I mean, can we reboot and get rid of that character?
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Cause I already said that the other day.
- 1:14:16Speaker 10: I was just like, I should have given it to
- 1:14:17Speaker 10: Donald Glover. It would have been different. It would have
- 1:14:19Speaker 10: been interesting. And he's a strong enough.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Actor and it would have been an interesting character.
- 1:14:23Speaker 10: And I would have liked to have seen that Spider-Man.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I could care less about the Spider-Man.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: So, Well, I mean, okay, the first reboot that they
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: did a couple of years ago, I thought that was
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: actually pretty good.
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: I liked everything other than Tobey Maguire.
- 1:14:41Speaker 10: We're talking the Raimi reboot. See, that's the thing.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: You're talking about the Amazing reboot.
- 1:14:46Speaker 10: See, I just didn't care. I'm just trying not to
- 1:14:47Speaker 10: compare it to the the Raimi movies, but you kind
- 1:14:56Speaker 10: of can't.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: To me, those first two Raimi movies are so well
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: put together as a superhero.
- 1:15:02Speaker 10: They're not even like.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: Those were comic book movies.
- 1:15:05Speaker 10: They are.
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: That is Raimi's style. He frames the action. He does
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: these zoom-ins. You can see all the way back through
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: Darkman and Evil Dead. He has that sensibility. But my
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: problem with that is it calls attention to himself. And
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: he's treating it like a comic book. You almost kind
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: of half expect the movie screen to be that comic
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: book panel. And bubbles, you know, dialogue bubbles to pop up.
- 1:15:38Speaker 10: So do we have to take it that dark, though?
- 1:15:41Speaker 10: Everything has to be Batman now?
- 1:15:43Speaker 9: I feel like that's what they want to do now.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: For those of us who grew up on comic books,
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: and now we've gotten to an age where a lot
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: of people still follow comic books, but it We're trying
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: not to be embarrassed by it. And so we're now
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: treating these movies as a way to legitimize our geek passions.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: And so I think in certain respects it does work.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: You're able to inject a lot of depth and drama
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: and character and make these characters more real, as if
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: they're coming into our world you know and that's the
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: problem I had with something like Richard Lester's Superman 2
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: is that instead of instead of the filmmakers trying to
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: bring those characters into our world he was trying to
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: take the audience and put it in the comic book.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: World and I think in the right property that could
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: work like I always liked those Superman movies because I
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: felt like that's what it was doing it was just
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: capturing that Superman it what it sacrifices for being silly
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: comic book movies it gets the idea behind that character
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: and what he's supposed to represent which i don't know
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: what is your feeling as we get from one superhero
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: like when when you get to the the last superman
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: the the reboot of superman again like i feel like
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: he totally misses the mark as like not understanding the
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: character not not pacing a good story like i feel
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: like everything about that.
- 1:17:16Speaker 10: Last Superman movie I felt like missed the mark. You
- 1:17:18Speaker 10: could tell that.
- 1:17:19Speaker 9: They were using it as a flagship to just set
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: up the DC universe. And it's like, we're going to
- 1:17:23Speaker 9: compete with Marvel.
- 1:17:24Speaker 10: But they don't.
- 1:17:24Speaker 9: Yeah, and you can't.
- 1:17:26Speaker 10: Well, I mean, you could if it was well done,
- 1:17:28Speaker 10: but this is not the way to do it. He
- 1:17:29Speaker 10: just doesn't get the universe.
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: But back to the amazing Spider-Man, I think they did
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: a pretty good job there in balancing teen drama, teen romance, and,
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: I mean, okay, it could have been an Archie movie
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: for all we care about.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: But, no, but, I mean, you got Spider-Man.
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: You balanced it out with a little bit of a
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: more realistic drama rather than, you know, Tobey Maguire, I
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: never believed.
- 1:17:56Speaker 10: See, I liked him as just the dorky kid. Like,
- 1:18:00Speaker 10: he rang true as that.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: Yeah, but he was sort of a comic book-y, dorky kid.
- 1:18:04Speaker 11: It is.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: It was a parody, in a way.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: It is, but to me, it was so well done
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: that I've seen so many movies lift from that one now.
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: Like, it's this perfect.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: structure of a superhero movie of an origin movie like
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: it was very specific as to how to make all
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: that work and it did it really well whereas I
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: think I don't know the Garfield one like it's so
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: he's trying to be so serious but at the same
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: time still draw from the stuff that they built in
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: the Raimi movies that it's like it doesn't mix to
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: me I don't know but.
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: I hear in the new Spider-Man now they've gone back
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: to that Raimi sort of style of filmmaking What I
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: really admired about the first Amazing Spider-Man was that you know,
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: for him swinging around the city, I mean, they used
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: real stuntmen, and it was a real situation.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: And now they've gone back to the swooping cameras.
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: It's the third Raimi movie. Too much has gone on.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: So CG, yeah. Yeah, so CG.
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: And, you know, these are shots that, you know, even
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: though they can do it extremely realistically, they can get
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: the lighting and textures all right, but In the back
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: of your head, you're going, that shot is impossible.
- 1:19:11Speaker 10: This is a video game. That's what I feel like
- 1:19:13Speaker 10: a lot of times.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Well, I think if you like real people swinging around
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: on ropes, turn off the dark is what you need
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: to go see.
- 1:19:21Speaker 10: There's some guys on ropes. They have costumes. You're going
- 1:19:24Speaker 10: to love it. I wasn't sure what to think of
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: that either. That's a new level of reality that I
- 1:19:31Speaker 10: was not prepared for.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Turn off the dark. I'm waiting for something to fall
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: from the sky.
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: Just as a side note, in my early years, I
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: went to Japan, and I went to see.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: Kabuki. What's Kabuki?
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: It's one of those Japanese traditional cultural.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Very theatrical.
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: Extremely theatrical.
- 1:19:56Speaker 11: And....
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: And so I went during the matinee.
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: This was the time where it's much cheaper to go
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: in the matinee if you're just a student or whatever.
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: And so I'm sitting on my own, and the whole
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: theater is dark. The stage is dark, and it's very emotional,
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: and there's a character in the center of the stage,
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: and it's very stark.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: It's just a stage.
- 1:20:20Speaker 5: There's, I think, sakura leaves floating down. There's dramatic lighting,
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: and all along the back behind her are these flats.
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: And it's just a row of flats to indicate the background.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: Okay, that's fine.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: So here she is, and she's talking about her long-lost
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: love or something.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: And this is extremely emotional.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: And out of the corner of my eye, on the
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: left side, I see one of the flats.
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: Start to fall. And the next one falls. And it
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: was like a house of cards, all falling down.
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: And behind the flask are all these other kabuki actors
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: in half makeup, smoking cigarettes. And they're going, oh, shit.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: And, you know, I thought about this later. I said,
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: you know what? I would have paid extra to see
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: this performance.
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: If you would have known this was coming.
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: I think you have to kind of decide going in,
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: especially when you get into the film, it's like, I
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: don't mind the dramatized stuff. Like I don't mind, again,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: sometimes we separate the theater thing versus movies and we
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: want movies to be so realistic. And I feel like
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: as long as you kind of set the ground rules,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: like sometimes I'm okay with something just embracing whatever cheesy.
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: Thing it is.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: You know, if it's a comic book, if it's theatrical,
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: if it's whatever, you just kind of have to stay
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: within your parameters of like, this is the universe we're
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: setting up. This is the way characters are going to act.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: I think it's okay if you do that.
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: So with this new Amazing Spider-Man number two, I mean,
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: they kind of went back on themselves. They set something
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: up in the first one, and then they didn't follow
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: through on the second one.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: And they're also falling into the trap of every superhero movie,
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: which is we have to have so many villains for
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: no good reason.
- 1:22:10Speaker 9: Oh, Sinister Six now.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:22:12Speaker 10: I'm like, how many?
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: We can't.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Have they learned nothing from all of these other movies? Like,
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: it's rare that any of them work with more than
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: one villain. And if so, it's usually a weird dynamic
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: that saves it. But yeah, they have to keep cramming
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: in more villains.
- 1:22:26Speaker 9: I don't understand.
- 1:22:28Speaker 10: So, with that. Uh, do you have anything coming up
- 1:22:35Speaker 10: to tell people about? Do you have stuff for them
- 1:22:37Speaker 10: to look for?
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: Um, uh, no.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Should they befriend you on Facebook and go find you
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: at upcoming events and buy your posters of awesomeness?
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: Um, yeah, no, I, I, I'd say, you know, uh,
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: keep a lookout for, for the Andersons. I think, um,
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: and you know, uh, I think they're talking about having
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: a traveling exhibition in the States next year. So if
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: you were a fan of Thunderbirds or Fireball XL5 or UFO,
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: Keep an eye out for that.
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: I think it's something that is a lost... I don't
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: want to say art, but it's something that we all
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: kind of grew up with, and it's something that I
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: don't think we should forget about. Don't let all this
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: great stuff fall by the wayside just because it's a
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: few years old.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: I think there's potential to have that backlash thing. I mean,
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: you think how much we've gone back to old technology now.
- 1:23:51Speaker 10: In a very short span of time.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: The other day they were playing an episode of Third
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Rock from the Sun. First of all, it's funny to watch,
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:24:03Speaker 10: Our little kid grow up to be like this super
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: Hollywood like heartthrob now. And I'm like, he's a dorky
- 1:24:07Speaker 10: long haired kid.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: And it doesn't seem that long ago to me, but
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: it's just long enough that it's like, that's weird.
- 1:24:12Speaker 10: But it's funny how much.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: Like that stuff very quickly dated, like they're making all
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: these references and like a midway in.
- 1:24:18Speaker 10: John Lithgow, like, makes a joke about how, you know,
- 1:24:21Speaker 10: they're talking about CDs.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: And he's like, I wonder if people embrace the rich,
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: more wonderful sound of vinyl.
- 1:24:28Speaker 10: And I'm like, that was a joke then.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: He was making the joke of how outdated and archaic
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: vinyl is.
- 1:24:33Speaker 10: And I'm like, in a span of ten years, we
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: have come full circle. People love vinyl. Like, there is
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: this weird, like.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: rubber band effect of like we hate it we hate
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: it oh my god this is the greatest thing ever
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: and I think we get we've been so oversaturated with
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: CG with all this you know new special effects and
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: I don't know I think we're getting to the point
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: that we are going to have that where the rubber
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: band snaps back and we're going to get to be like, Oh,
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: these puppets are awesome. And no, I, you know, I
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: want marionettes. I want somebody actually physically doing something.
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: So I don't know about that. I mean, I think.
- 1:25:05Speaker 10: Within a subculture, I would like to think that.
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: I would like to think that.
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: Yes. I don't think mainstream, but I think there's going
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: to be much again, like the vinyl thing. I think
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: a subculture is going to come back and be like, no,
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: this is our thing.
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: My experience has been all, you know, most of the
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: kids have been, you know, uh, the latest generation.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: They won't even take a look at the old movies.
- 1:25:23Speaker 10: They don't, It's old. It's true.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: It does register so early that you don't think it will.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: Like when they're really little kids and they'll just be like,
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: that was, I don't know. Like it just clicks in
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: their head differently and they don't respond to it the
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: same because they know it's old.
- 1:25:39Speaker 10: Yeah, so I don't know.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: Again, I think it's up to us as the geeks
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: having children now to raise them right and like, Let
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: them experience things the way that they're supposed to and
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: just sort of develop their own taste and not worry
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: about what everybody else is doing.
- 1:25:52Speaker 9: I think Christopher Nolan did that first Batman really well
- 1:25:55Speaker 9: with the light use of CG. I mean, there was
- 1:25:58Speaker 9: a lot, but when you think about it, it's really
- 1:26:00Speaker 9: just him. As an origin story, you don't need a
- 1:26:03Speaker 9: lot of CG to begin with, but it's not as
- 1:26:06Speaker 9: much craziness as Avengers.
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:10Speaker 9: If only we can get our... I mean, again, I
- 1:26:14Speaker 9: guess it's Batman. He doesn't have to fly and explode things.
- 1:26:17Speaker 10: Yeah, Avengers overuses that stuff in the end.
- 1:26:21Speaker 9: He swoops.
- 1:26:23Speaker 10: He swoops. He hangs.
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: Which, actually, I hate that part about Batman.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: That he kind of flies and he really shouldn't be
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: able to. He should probably die really quick.
- 1:26:35Speaker 10: He's got money.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: It's cool.
- 1:26:37Speaker 10: Rich people can fly.
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: It's all right.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: I think the technology is coming back. The audience will
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: find it. We're all coming back around to old school technology.
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: It's not really the technique.
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: You have to have the writing to back it up.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: You can look at something like Team America.
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: If it was poor writing, that film would have died
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: no matter if it was live action or puppets or.
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: I don't know. Bits of fruit.
- 1:27:09Speaker 10: Yeah. It makes a big difference.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: I think if we've learned nothing from this week's movie,
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: writing might just save your project.
- 1:27:21Speaker 10: So hire better writers. Everyone across the board.
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: It's unfortunate. Writers are low on the totem pole.
- 1:27:28Speaker 10: Very low.
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: Very low.
- 1:27:30Speaker 10: And interchangeable.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: And you can bring in nine more and somehow having
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: way too many of them makes things better.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: I think it's come to the point where almost anybody
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: can call themselves a writer.
- 1:27:43Speaker 10: I'm working on something right now.
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: There you go. You've proven my point.
- 1:27:47Speaker 10: Don't let any idiot be a writer.
- 1:27:51Speaker 9: It was wonderful meeting you, Mr.
- 1:27:52Speaker 10: Chu.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Thank you very much.
- 1:27:53Speaker 9: Where are you from? Where do you live?
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: Vancouver.
- 1:27:55Speaker 9: Oh, nice.
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: It's where the real jobs are.
- 1:27:58Speaker 9: Where the Canada is.
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: Well, who is it?
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: I think Sony is moving their entire.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: Really?
- 1:28:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: Special effects operation up there now.
- 1:28:08Speaker 10: Based on the L.A.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: Version of it?
- 1:28:11Speaker 10: Or were they already out of the country?
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: They're saying they're closing down the one in L.A. and
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: sending everything up to B.C.
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: Not that that will affect me.
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: To be honest, apart from Battlestar, I really haven't had
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: a whole lot of contact with the big budget studios.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: So I wonder, where does most of your work come
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: from now?
- 1:28:34Speaker 10: Like, outside stuff?
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: You know, uh, most of my stuff actually comes through
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: Facebook and the people that I meet through Facebook. And so, um,
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: I guess it's just my personality or my nature that
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: I tend to gravitate towards, you know, the, the, the,
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: the independence. And, uh, I kind of want to see
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: them succeed. Um, I've worked in a studio environment before,
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: and I really don't enjoy it that much.
- 1:29:03Speaker 10: It's so much fun.
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: Well, you know, you're another cog in the wheel. There's
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: always somebody else with an opinion better than yours.
- 1:29:16Speaker 10: Who is higher up on the chain, and you can't
- 1:29:19Speaker 10: argue with them.
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And, you know, yeah, you can't argue.
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: That's the thing. Whereas on an independent, okay, you have
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: another director or producer, but not as many.
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: Not as many steps to get a green light.
- 1:29:36Speaker 10: And usually it's just you working with the creators, more
- 1:29:39Speaker 10: or less, and them trying to.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you can ask them questions.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: Is this what you were thinking? And they can be
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: more specific. Whereas if you want to talk to a.
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: Director in a big-budget movie, good luck. You're just going
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: to get... You have to go through so many people.
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: And even then.
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: a lot of these films are, they're so big and
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: the directors.
- 1:29:59Speaker 9: Don't necessarily have a good idea.
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: They just, you know, they have their, their time is all, all,
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: you know, tied up elsewhere. And it's like, okay, just
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: give me 10 different versions and I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: choose from that.
- 1:30:09Speaker 10: That's putting no effort in whatsoever. It's just pick and choose.
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: Well, I mean, it, it.
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: Makes my life more difficult. Uh, not that I, not
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: that I really care, but, but it also.
- 1:30:18Speaker 10: Shows they have no concept of what they want.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: Like a real, you know, if you're an artist, if
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: you're a, an auteur of what you're trying to create, uh,
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: You have a very singular vision, probably, but when you're just.
- 1:30:29Speaker 10: Brought in for hire, more or less, you're.
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: Just slapped together. And that's the way most directors are
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: these days.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: They're people that are brought in for hire. They're basically
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: yes-men that will make the film that the producers want.
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: And that's essentially the problem that happened with Ant-Man just
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: this week.
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: Marvel fired him because.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: Because he actually had a good idea and a vision.
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: Well, he had a different take on what the film
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: was supposed to be, and Marvel didn't.
- 1:30:59Speaker 10: Agree with that. Yeah, a talented take. They didn't like that.
- 1:31:03Speaker 10: We don't like people with skill or talent. Get the
- 1:31:05Speaker 10: hell out of here.
- 1:31:06Speaker 9: They forgot where they were just a few years ago.
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: They are hiring talented directors. I mean, Joss Whedon and
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: James Gunn is actually a good.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: Director, too.
- 1:31:14Speaker 10: I think he's really good.
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: They're making some good decisions, but I guess.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: What is his name?
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: Edward Wright.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: Edward Wright, yeah.
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: I'm just guessing it was just too foreign for him
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: or too unusual.
- 1:31:31Speaker 10: I don't know that he's in... That's the thing.
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: It surprised me that he wanted to do a superhero movie.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: It was.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Again, that's why I was saying the other day. I
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: was looking forward to seeing him because he's got such
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: a distinct visual style. He's got such a distinct way
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: that he creates his characters that I would be interested
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: to see. I've seen so many generic superhero movies. I
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: would love to see somebody with that much style come
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: in and do their own spin on a superhero movie,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: which he could have done, but not now.
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: Well, what other director out there would you like to
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: see attack a superhero movie?
- 1:32:03Speaker 10: Well, they've been handing it to him. That's the thing. Like,
- 1:32:05Speaker 10: the fact that they gave Joss Whedon a chance. Like,
- 1:32:07Speaker 10: I am kind of a fan. Who else?
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: Who else?
- 1:32:09Speaker 10: Who's got, like, a very unique vision that you would say?
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: I was amazed they gave it to James Gunn, because
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: to me, James Gunn is very... outside the box like
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: he is a very and again look at the little
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: like something like slither like slither is not a hollywood
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: friendly movie it is a weird movie and it it's
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: very structurally weird like it doesn't need to fall into
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: yeah it's at best a b-movie it's just a weird
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: like something that you run across on cable and i
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: mean what the hell is this but like he makes
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: it work because he he puts so much heart into
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: it and like he really cares about this weird story
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: So I thought that was strange that they even gave
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: him such a huge property on this new landscape of theirs.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: But I'm trying to think who else is that original anymore.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: I mean, Edgar Wright I think is so underrated because
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: I think there's very few people, especially in comedy, that
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: are doing anything outside the box. Comedy has become the
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: wasteland at this point. For all the fun action movies
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: we have out there, I think comedies are getting dumber.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: and dumber and more mainstream and watered down to the
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: point of stupidity now.
- 1:33:16Speaker 10: So every once in a while when.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: You get something like that, like the stuff that he does,
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: I'm just like, there still is something there that could
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: be done with it.
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: I haven't seen an American comedy that I've found funny
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: in years.
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: In years and years.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: The one that we did a show on that I
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: was really impressed with and found myself in the middle
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: of a discussion going, I can't believe how long it's
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: been since I've really liked a comedy this much. was
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: uh mystery team have you.
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: Seen the i haven't seen i know it's.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: Those guys yeah i mean and again there's there's a
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: group of guys that like started stuff completely on their
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: own sat there funded everything themselves posted on youtube posted
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: on funny or die or whatever it was and built
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: this whole universe and then that became they're like they
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: took all of their money they made from those little
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: videos and funded their own movie and that's why it
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: got that way so like that Even that director, like,
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: he started doing, again, I think he ended up doing
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: some TV stuff after that. He's still kind of trying
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: to get into, like, mainstream Hollywood stuff. But, like, I
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: think that's such a well put together movie. So atypical
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: of what is out there. And, like, I can't imagine
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: them continuing to want to do that kind of stuff.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: Because it's too smart and original.
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: There's actually a, I think it's like a YouTube video.
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: I just saw it, like, two nights ago. And it's
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: comparing Edgar Wright's.
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: Comedy style or filming style to typical American comedy movie
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: and why his version of filmmaking works better for comedy
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: than the American. And it basically comes down to he's
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: setting up the joke visually whereas everything in America is
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: just Several people in the room talking.
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: It's hiring a known personality and letting them say their
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: stupid thing.
- 1:35:04Speaker 10: That's what all those Adam Sandler movies. They're not funny.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: And the only thing they're building around is Seth Rogen
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: or Adam Sandler. They don't have anything funny built in.
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: It's just, you guys kind of wing it and do
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: your thing, and that'll make it okay.
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: And I'm like, no.
- 1:35:19Speaker 10: Whereas, even if.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: You take out the visual, I mean, half of his
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: gags are visual gags. But even, like, the writing going
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: into it. Like, he writes stuff that's kind of subtle
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: going through. And then the punchline might be the visual joke. But, like,
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: it only works when he sets it up by writing
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: a good scene.
- 1:35:35Speaker 10: And, like, I don't know. You don't get that with
- 1:35:37Speaker 10: mainstream comedy.
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: So it's just dumb.
- 1:35:40Speaker 10: Like, they're so dumb.
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: It's strange. I mean, yeah.
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: You see a lot of, you know, on the comedy channel,
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: there are a lot of good writers.
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: There are a lot of good stand-up comedians.
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: There are.
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: But when it comes to movies, no, nothing.
- 1:35:54Speaker 10: Because only the dumb stuff makes money. That's what I
- 1:35:57Speaker 10: think it is. So they keep greenlighting these same.
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: I don't think it's only the dumb stuff makes money.
- 1:36:01Speaker 10: I don't know. Look at the comedies that have made money.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: Has somebody ever tried to make a smart comedy and
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: it failed?
- 1:36:07Speaker 10: How often do they try to make a smart comedy
- 1:36:09Speaker 10: is the problem.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. No, I think it's because dumb comedies are
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: easier to write.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: They're easier to fund. because you have nothing but names involved,
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: and then they.
- 1:36:20Speaker 10: Throw it together. I don't know, I think that's... It's
- 1:36:22Speaker 10: just lazy filmmaking. I mean, the closest one, like the...
- 1:36:25Speaker 10: Was it This is the End? That Seth Rogen one?
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: Was the funniest thing I've seen those people do in years,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: and it's because they were.
- 1:36:33Speaker 10: Stepping outside of the little.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: It was almost meta, like they were making fun of themselves,
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: and how dumb their normal things are, and the way
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: that everybody perceives them, like they were playing a weird,
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: skewed version of their own selves.
- 1:36:47Speaker 10: And that was the funniest thing.
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they're basically, like, because they're doing, like, people, like,
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: they are playing basically themselves.
- 1:36:54Speaker 10: So people come up to Seth.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: Rogen at the beginning, and they're like, hey, do the
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: Seth laugh. Like, they've got, like, the fact that he
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: puts up with us all day long. So, like, they're
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: making fun of how the audience perceives them anyway. And
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: then they start, like, skewing it, and.
- 1:37:06Speaker 10: They've got, what's his name from Superbad?
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Not Jonah Hill, the guy from, I mean, he's basically, like,
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: he does this version of himself, like, he's just a
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: coked out partier.
- 1:37:19Speaker 10: Like, and like, I don't think he's really like that.
- 1:37:21Speaker 10: So he's going out of his way to make himself
- 1:37:23Speaker 10: look horrible.
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: Like, so I'm like, that's almost the funniest thing I've
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: seen out of any of these people.
- 1:37:29Speaker 10: Like, I don't know.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: That's, that's the closest thing in that little camp of
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: like all those guys that keep getting stuff green lit,
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: but like, they're just usually not very funny.
- 1:37:39Speaker 10: And that one, because it's so outside.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: Their normal scenario and they don't, They don't dial back
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: on that end of the world thing.
- 1:37:47Speaker 10: Like I thought it was just going to be very
- 1:37:48Speaker 10: light so they didn't like ruffle any feathers or.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Because it gets kind of religious at one point. It
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: takes on very biblical versions.
- 1:37:56Speaker 10: Of the end of the world. And I'm like that
- 1:37:57Speaker 10: could step on toes.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Like I was not expecting them to take it that
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: way just because somebody would get upset, especially the way
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: that they do it.
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: But that's the thing if you're doing a comedy you
- 1:38:07Speaker 5: can't pull punches.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: You shouldn't but they always seem like they do like
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: they always seem like they.
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: Like what's the most mainstream yeah what's what's the instead
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: of writing something that's kind of edgy that's gonna piss
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: a lot of people off let's just have them fall
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: down you know what's the most wrong way we can
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: take this?
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: Well, yeah.
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: Actually, today I heard somebody say that their wives or
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: something was berating them for liking Team America because it
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: was so racist.
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: Well, that's the point.
- 1:38:37Speaker 10: They were making fun of racism. You know?
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: But, again, that's what I think our culture has gotten
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: so dumbed down now that, like, we're not even getting
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: satire anymore.
- 1:38:47Speaker 10: Like, we're so dumb.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: We've bought into so much dumb material for the last
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: 20 years that, like, we're missing the point of the
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: comedy sometimes.
- 1:38:55Speaker 10: It's so over their heads, they don't even realize it
- 1:38:57Speaker 10: went over their heads.
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: I don't get it.
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: So, what, now Jeff Foxworthy is another comedian?
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: He's a social commentator?
- 1:39:06Speaker 10: If he was doing it well, he could be. He's not.
- 1:39:08Speaker 8: No.
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: If he would but again that was one of those
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: like even in the beginning that's an example of like
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: when he started out.
- 1:39:16Speaker 10: Doing those stupid you might be a redneck jokes.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: He was making fun of those guys and they all
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: started oh that's hilarious i'm like no he's making fun
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: of you the one that's laughing at it you're the
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: one he's making fun of and like i think even
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: he realized it and went oh well shut up they're
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: pet and like they started writing those huge checks and
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: he's like I guess I'll keep doing this for 15,
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: 20 years now. Like he just keeps doing that. And like,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: I can't blame him because look how much money.
- 1:39:42Speaker 10: He made off that stupid concept. And like, now I
- 1:39:46Speaker 10: can host a game show and still make a living.
- 1:39:48Speaker 10: So who cares? So, I mean, if people are that
- 1:39:51Speaker 10: dumb that they get on board and give you that
- 1:39:53Speaker 10: much money, I can't blame you. I don't still, I
- 1:39:55Speaker 10: still don't like it, but I can't blame you.
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: That's, that's one of those like early on that I
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: was like, these people that are laughing at this, they.
- 1:40:04Speaker 10: Don't realize what they're laughing at.
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: Like, they think they get the joke, but the real
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: joke is it's on you.
- 1:40:11Speaker 10: You're an idiot.
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: Well, they think it's not applying to them.
- 1:40:14Speaker 10: Yeah, they think those guys are idiots. No, wait, you're
- 1:40:17Speaker 10: the idiot. You're missing the point.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: Yeah, again, that was probably the turning point in American
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: comedy was the blue collar comedy.
- 1:40:28Speaker 10: Or even like the kings of comedy had to like, Specifically,
- 1:40:32Speaker 10: this is only for the black audiences. I'm like, can
- 1:40:35Speaker 10: we just do funny? Is that okay?
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: Everybody had to take their specific group and make it like,
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: this is the Hispanic comedy tour.
- 1:40:45Speaker 10: Just be funny. Is that okay? Could you just write
- 1:40:47Speaker 10: something clever? Is that an option for you?
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: Everything had to be so specific that you other people
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: aren't going to get this.
- 1:40:56Speaker 10: I'm like, no, nobody's going to get it because they're
- 1:40:57Speaker 10: not very funny.
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:41:02Speaker 10: Comedy is so hard.
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: Or the Inuit comedy. Yeah.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: I'm sure that was up there somewhere. We didn't see
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: it because it didn't tour very low. Somewhere, somebody did
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: a version of that.
- 1:41:13Speaker 10: Just write some funny.
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: The only great American comedy, the last one I saw
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: was probably Raising Arizona.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 1:41:23Speaker 10: See, that's brilliant comedy.
- 1:41:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: Everything after that, it was just dumb, dumb, dumb.
- 1:41:29Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, there's not much.
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: There is actually one I saw a few years later.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: And it's, of all things, it's Canadian.
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: And it is very, very funny. The writing in it
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: is very smart.
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: And you never see this movie anywhere. And it's strange.
- 1:41:49Speaker 5: It was partially funded by the Sci-Fi Channel. So, you know,
- 1:41:53Speaker 5: they can put it on whenever they want.
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: But you still never see it. Which one was this?
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: It's a movie. In Canada, it's called Top of the
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: Food Chain. Top of the Food Chain.
- 1:42:03Speaker 5: In the States, I think they changed the title to Invasion.
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: And it is sort of a B-movie about an alien invasion.
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: And it's very cheaply made. But the comedy in it
- 1:42:14Speaker 5: is so sharp. And it's almost... When I saw it,
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: I thought, my God, this is the next great comedy
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: that And nobody's seen it.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: It disappeared. And it's strange.
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: It is very strange because you think this was a
- 1:42:30Speaker 5: movie that should have gotten a cult following had people
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: seen it.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: And it's weird, again, because there's so much comedy talent
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: out there. Like you were saying, there's like a good
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: amount of, I don't know, there's just new wave coming about.
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: I think a stand-up comedy is easier because it's just
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: one person writing, one person performing.
- 1:42:50Speaker 10: It doesn't get so muddied and yeah.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: But I mean, there's a huge like wave coming back
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: of that. Like it died that post nineties, like they
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: beat it to death in the nineties. And it went
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: through this lull of like standups that are like, what
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: the hell do we do now? Like they're not just
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: going to give everybody a sitcom like they did before.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: So it's like, now what do we do? And it's
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: been this like.
- 1:43:07Speaker 10: 20 years of rebuilding almost.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: And in this last five years or so, there's this
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: big rush that it's like, again, it's not mainstream, but
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: it's this hardcore cult of like, there's all these shows
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: I listen to now that are based out of LA
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: and And there's this new wave of like people that
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: just go.
- 1:43:23Speaker 10: To comedy shows. They just, they all, and again, it's
- 1:43:26Speaker 10: almost this undercurrent because they're not doing TV. They're not
- 1:43:29Speaker 10: doing movies.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: They're all on podcasts and they're on like video stuff
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: on YouTube.
- 1:43:35Speaker 10: They're all doing like, there's a bunch of them now
- 1:43:39Speaker 10: that are.
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: Doing like their own series of shows or they'll take
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: like a theater version. There's a lot of like, as
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: much as I'm not thrilled with most of what I've
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: seen improv wise, there's almost that improv troop mentality of
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: what they're trying to do so they're actually doing it
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: with live audiences or with people that are totally not
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: on the radar with like people listening to podcasts or
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: watching a old streaming web series so it's like there's
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: this huge current kind of building i think but there's
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: no way to like make it cross over into mainstream
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: but i'm kind of waiting to see because i've seen
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: all these like weird little towns start doing these comedy
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: series And they get really well received. I keep trying
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: to figure out a way to do something like that
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: here because I'm like, you can't be that hard to
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: put together like a comedy festival. You need a microphone
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: most of the time. It's like, just get the people there.
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: Get a microphone on stage. You don't have to have sets.
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: You don't have to have a hundred other people running
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: the show.
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: It's as big or as small as you need it.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: It's just as you can afford to get somebody there
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: and get a venue.
- 1:44:40Speaker 10: Some of the greatest comedians.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: Bob Newhart.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:44:44Speaker 7: Microphone.
- 1:44:44Speaker 10: That's all you need.
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: Stool. That's it.
- 1:44:46Speaker 10: Bill Cosby.
- 1:44:48Speaker 5: Bill Cosby.
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: There he is.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: As boring as he's gotten now, he was phenomenal. Like,
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: he was completely game-changing.
- 1:44:54Speaker 10: I saw his last.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: One on TV.
- 1:44:56Speaker 10: I've heard he's doing better stuff now. It's good.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: It's still good.
- 1:44:59Speaker 10: He's still got it. He's just a weirder, older dude now.
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:45:04Speaker 10: He's become a strange character as the years have gone on.
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: But the thing is, as old as he's gotten, the
- 1:45:09Speaker 5: comedy is still relevant.
- 1:45:11Speaker 10: It's still.
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: Relatable to everybody.
- 1:45:13Speaker 10: That was like Carlin.
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: As old as he got, he was equally as sharp,
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: if not sharper than his 70s stuff. He was equally
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: as cutting edge and kind of pushing the envelope a
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: hell of a lot further in his old age than
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: when he was still kind of the weird hippie guy
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: that was on vinyl doing his stuff.
- 1:45:34Speaker 10: It's funny how much some of them don't lose it.
- 1:45:36Speaker 10: But yeah, I don't know. There's been this new.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: surge of comedy now that I'm kind of waiting to
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: see what happens when all these talented people finally start
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: breaking through because you're starting to see a little of
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: it but they keep filtering their.
- 1:45:48Speaker 10: Way into mainstream stuff or like you know.
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: What I would like to do I would like to
- 1:45:55Speaker 5: do radio comedy again I mean a.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: Radio show that's coming back like dramatic kind of or
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: like a play of some sort because there's two of
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: them now that have taken off on audio because you
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: have this have you heard of the forensics They did
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: a TV show one time called Four on the Floor.
- 1:46:13Speaker 10: Okay, no, that's what I thought. I've seen that, yeah.
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: But before that, they were on radio.
- 1:46:17Speaker 10: Because they were on Showtime with that.
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: And they were hilarious.
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: They were extremely, I mean, it's like the Pythons that,
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: before they went into comedy, they were like teachers and
- 1:46:27Speaker 5: professors and scientists. And they were extremely smart.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: And so they had that, that, that.
- 1:46:34Speaker 5: Information, that education to draw on.
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: And they could make fun of it. And yes, some
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: of their stuff was political. That stuff is certainly dated.
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: But there's other stuff in there that is universal. And
- 1:46:49Speaker 3: because it's radio.
- 1:46:50Speaker 5: It works so much better. It really, so much better
- 1:46:54Speaker 5: than it did when they made that step to television.
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: Because when it went to television, suddenly your imagination was
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: no longer in play. And it kind of looks stupid, actually.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: Again, that's the weird thing that this new avenue has
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: opened up with like podcasting and stuff is like there
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: was like a whole new generation that kind of rediscovered that.
- 1:47:13Speaker 10: You know, it's like everything had.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: Gotten so TV oriented and like, you know, watching everything
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: on DVD. And like we hit this weird like it's
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: almost a step back. But in this different way, it
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: opens up this whole new avenue of like people that
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: are like so engrossed in like the interview part of it.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Or now that the two that have taken off is
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: that Tales from Nightville, I think it is. And then
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: Thrilling Adventure Hour.
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I've heard of that.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: They're both kind of that same thing. It's just sort
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: of based on redoing a.
- 1:47:43Speaker 10: Radio drama from back in the day. But they're doing
- 1:47:45Speaker 10: it really well written, kind of smart, bringing in talented people.
- 1:47:49Speaker 10: So it's like kind of waiting for that to break.
- 1:47:51Speaker 10: I feel like it's got potential.
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: I would love to go back into that.
- 1:47:55Speaker 5: One of the funniest things that was– Hitchhiker's Guide to
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: the Galaxy when it was radio.
- 1:48:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: When it was TV, it was still pretty good. It
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: was fun on TV. But when it became a movie,
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: it became shit.
- 1:48:06Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: Well, thank you once again for joining us this time around.
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: And again, you've newly been adopted, so welcome to the fold.
- 1:48:14Speaker 10: Fight your way out if you want to, but you can't.
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: Can I go to the next one by Skype?
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: I was just cursing the name of Skype earlier today.
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: I don't love it, so you're just going to have
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: to come here a lot.
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: Okay, I'll snail mail.
- 1:48:26Speaker 10: Just fly in every two weeks or so. Is that cool? Yeah,
- 1:48:30Speaker 10: you can cover that. As often as we.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: Can rope you in, we're up for it, so that
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: is up to you. But either way, thank you for
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: sitting in this week.
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: You're very welcome.
- 1:48:39Speaker 10: Thank you for leaving the house, Patrick.
- 1:48:41Speaker 9: That's what I'm here for.
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: I think everybody's falling asleep now.
- 1:48:45Speaker 10: Yeah, I think we should wrap this up. Otherwise, that
- 1:48:47Speaker 10: about does it. We will return next week. Same geek time,
- 1:48:49Speaker 10: same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:49:11Speaker 11: With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, he pulls
- 1:49:15Speaker 11: the spinning high-tension wires down. Helpless people on subway trains
- 1:49:25Speaker 11: scream to God as he looks in on them. He
- 1:49:28Speaker 11: picks up a bus and he throws it back down
- 1:49:34Speaker 11: as he wades through the buildings toward the center of town. Oh, no,
- 1:49:44Speaker 11: they say he's got to go, go, go, Godzilla, yeah. Oh, no,
- 1:49:55Speaker 11: they're going to Tokyo, go, go, Godzilla, yeah. Oh, no.
- 1:50:27Speaker 11: Let's say he's got to go. Go, go, Godzilla. Yeah. Oh, no.
- 1:50:39Speaker 11: Let's say he's got to go. Go, go, Godzilla. Yeah.
- 1:51:00Speaker 11: Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. No, there's no Tokyo. Go, go, Godzilla!
- 1:51:36Speaker 11: History shows again and again how nature points up the
- 1:51:54Speaker 11: volume of man. Godzilla!
- 1:52:01Speaker 10: History shows again.
- 1:52:03Speaker 11: And again how nature points up the molly of men.
- 1:52:08Speaker 10: Godzilla! History shows again and again.
- 1:52:14Speaker 11: How nature points up the molly of men. Godzilla! History
- 1:52:23Speaker 11: shows again and again how nature points up the molly
- 1:52:27Speaker 11: of men.
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: Godzilla!
- 1:52:31Speaker 10: Damn lizard!
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: It does.
- 1:52:33Speaker 10: That wasn't directed at you in anger.
- 1:52:34Speaker 3: What was that?
- 1:52:35Speaker 10: If you want that, you can have it. Are you drunk?
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:52:42Speaker 10: See, they brought the bourbon.
- 1:52:44Speaker 5: You're smart.
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: Random. Oh, Lord.
- 1:52:50Speaker 9: So if that guy's drunk, you think I can get
- 1:52:52Speaker 9: him drunk enough to go put on the head from Stargate?
- 1:52:57Speaker 10: Probably wouldn't take much. I think so very would, but
- 1:53:00Speaker 10: I'm not responsible for such activity.
