- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites. I'm black Jack Fletcher, and joining
- 0:12Speaker 1: me today it's former Major League All Star, legendary human
- 0:17Speaker 1: being and lover Paul La Duca. PAULI, how are we
- 0:21Speaker 1: doing today? Did? Yes? You did? Miss you? Black Jack?
- 0:26Speaker 1: How are you doing? I'm fantastic. I don't miss you
- 0:29Speaker 1: because I'm gonna see in Vegas and about what like
- 0:33Speaker 1: five days, Oh my god, me and Paul Laduca are
- 0:36Speaker 1: going out to Vegas and then we're gonna drive across
- 0:38Speaker 1: the desert to California. It has a very fear and
- 0:42Speaker 1: loathing in Las Vegas vibe to it. Um probably will
- 0:45Speaker 1: go down very similarly. Yeah, And I'm going to prove
- 0:48Speaker 1: to everybody that I'm gonna bet the whole board and
- 0:50Speaker 1: show all the tickets. We're gonna have so much fun,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know that wind up betting the board, We're gonna
- 0:57Speaker 1: be a mess. If anyone's gonna be out in Vegas
- 1:00Speaker 1: a week, the whole thing for everybody. Yeah, we probably
- 1:04Speaker 1: will wind up doing a lot of that. Hopefully we
- 1:06Speaker 1: don't get fired. Yeah, true, we probably. Although you know what,
- 1:12Speaker 1: anyone who's listening to this show knows it's going to
- 1:14Speaker 1: be the best damn content this company has ever put out.
- 1:18Speaker 1: That's probably true. I mean that's not probably true. That
- 1:20Speaker 1: is true. So yeah, if you're gonna be in Vegas
- 1:23Speaker 1: next week, like Tuesday to Thursday, feel free to find us.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We'll be visible. Um all right, PAULI. So we've got
- 1:30Speaker 1: a lot of stuff to talk about today. There is
- 1:31Speaker 1: a lot going on, particularly in the world of baseball
- 1:36Speaker 1: and football. So let's jump right into it and go
- 1:39Speaker 1: to your wheelhouse. Talk a little bit of baseball. What
- 1:43Speaker 1: in the hell is going on with Bryce Harper? Machado
- 1:47Speaker 1: signs last week with the Padres three hundred million dollars.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We finally get a leak that the Phillies have offered
- 1:54Speaker 1: over three hundred million ten years. He clearly does not
- 1:58Speaker 1: want to play in Philadelphia. I don't really know how
- 2:00Speaker 1: you can reach any other conclusion. Yesterday we hear the
- 2:03Speaker 1: Giants are now willing to go ten years, where previously
- 2:06Speaker 1: they wanted something short term. What's going on with him?
- 2:11Speaker 1: I don't know. I tried to calm my sources, um
- 2:15Speaker 1: with the Dodgers to see what was going on there.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I've had a feeling that that was sort of uh,
- 2:21Speaker 1: just so whisping a win in l a thing, maybe
- 2:23Speaker 1: a Lon Rosen thing. He's been holding Magic Johnson's jockstrap
- 2:27Speaker 1: way too long and he's got a power trip. So
- 2:29Speaker 1: I think that's him making a bid for for Harper.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Um if the Dodgers sign Harper will set their their
- 2:36Speaker 1: franchise back. Considering my sources are saying that Clayton Kershaw
- 2:40Speaker 1: shoulder is not that good. When you can't play catch
- 2:42Speaker 1: right now, Um, that's not a good sign. And shoulder
- 2:45Speaker 1: is way worse than elbow. So the Dodgers concentrating on
- 2:50Speaker 1: Harper is the last thing they need to do, is
- 2:52Speaker 1: So I think they're gonna maybe wise up and steer away.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'm with you there, And I don't think the Dodgers
- 2:58Speaker 1: are willing to go ten years. I think if Harper
- 3:01Speaker 1: was gonna do like a five year deal, then maybe
- 3:03Speaker 1: they get in it. But I don't think they're going
- 3:05Speaker 1: ten years. I mean, I just don't see it happening.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So I guess the question is now, because you can
- 3:11Speaker 1: bet on this, where is he gonna go? I like
- 3:14Speaker 1: San Francisco at plus nine sixty one because the Giants
- 3:18Speaker 1: now were willing to go ten years. If you've gotten
- 3:20Speaker 1: that far as San Francisco. You can probably get to
- 3:24Speaker 1: the dollar amount he wants. That probably not that far
- 3:27Speaker 1: off on that. And I think he prefers to be
- 3:30Speaker 1: on the West coast for whatever reason to playing in
- 3:33Speaker 1: Philadelphia and at plus nine sixty one, there's a hell
- 3:36Speaker 1: of a lot of value there. It's a lot of value,
- 3:39Speaker 1: it really is. You're gonna have a new manager next year. Um,
- 3:43Speaker 1: there's a lot that they can propose to him. Um.
- 3:46Speaker 1: They could say, listen, Boach is gonna leave. Come for
- 3:49Speaker 1: Boaches last year. Um, and then we're gonna build everything
- 3:52Speaker 1: back around you Busters, probably at the back end of
- 3:54Speaker 1: his career, posey and they can start rebuilding. Um. Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: here's the thing again, Barry Bonds is only left handed
- 4:07Speaker 1: her that could ever conquer that ballpark, you know. And again,
- 4:11Speaker 1: here's a kid hit to forty last year, and I
- 4:13Speaker 1: don't see him hitting. He's gonna hit probably a little
- 4:17Speaker 1: bit better, but if he goes to a Giants line
- 4:19Speaker 1: up into that ballpark, I don't see it. You know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: this kid's want short term, I think, because he's not
- 4:28Speaker 1: getting the long term because listen, nobody is worth the
- 4:33Speaker 1: money that they're handing out. And the padres right now
- 4:35Speaker 1: are saying, oh, they signed Manny Machado thinking Nolan Arronado
- 4:39Speaker 1: was not going to get an extension. Can you imagine
- 4:41Speaker 1: if Harper signs with the Giants. If if Harper had
- 4:46Speaker 1: signed with the Giants and Aronado had signed an extension,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I guarantee you the Padres who have not given Manny
- 4:51Speaker 1: Machado three a lot tougher. Yes, So I just don't
- 4:57Speaker 1: know where his head is. Is his head I want security?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Or do I want to put up numbers list? But Paul,
- 5:06Speaker 1: here's the other thing about Philadelphia. When you're a visitor
- 5:09Speaker 1: going into Philly, which Washington is, they're not friendly fans. Okay,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you've got to get over that. I've had batteries thrown
- 5:16Speaker 1: at me in the bullpen. There. I quit. I warmed
- 5:18Speaker 1: up the picture before every game except Philadelphia. It was
- 5:22Speaker 1: useless because you have fans from batteries at you, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: those are just your ex girlfriends. I mean they threw
- 5:29Speaker 1: stuff at at Santa They I mean, that's just Philadelphia fans,
- 5:33Speaker 1: So that might have an effect on it. Um, Bryce,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know he's he flips his hair back. He's not
- 5:39Speaker 1: a Philly guy. I mean, let's be honest, Um, I've
- 5:46Speaker 1: never been. And here's the other thing. I've never seen
- 5:48Speaker 1: a guy that hit two be coveted for over three
- 5:53Speaker 1: seven millions. Well that's the thing. And you're you're, I mean,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you're right about the Philly thing in that it's a
- 5:58Speaker 1: sports town that brings a lot to pressure. And if
- 6:00Speaker 1: you go there and sign that contract, there's a ton
- 6:03Speaker 1: of it. Whereas if you go to San Francisco. Listen, man,
- 6:06Speaker 1: they stood by Barry Bonds through thick and thin. Those
- 6:09Speaker 1: fans are relatively loyal fans. I mean, the Giants still
- 6:12Speaker 1: draw a hell of a gate. But here when then
- 6:14Speaker 1: you can't compare the two players, black jack, No, no,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you have can come close to comparing him rocket fuel
- 6:21Speaker 1: on or off. Give Give Bryce Harper all the rocket
- 6:23Speaker 1: fuel he wants, give it, give it to him, give
- 6:25Speaker 1: him all the stuff Barry got. It's not even close,
- 6:28Speaker 1: not even a fraction of close to player Barry Bonds
- 6:30Speaker 1: is not even close. Barry could have stole forty basses too.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And by the way, it was a four time m
- 6:36Speaker 1: VVP before and was a good outfielder. Is like, they're
- 6:44Speaker 1: putting this guy on a pedestal like some millions. Why
- 6:48Speaker 1: tell me why he's on the pedestal because it's the
- 6:51Speaker 1: only guy left. He's in the right spot at the
- 6:53Speaker 1: right time. He's got that look. That's why I think
- 6:56Speaker 1: l A looked at him, because he can they can
- 6:59Speaker 1: market him. That's your fans, Listen that that's part of it.
- 7:04Speaker 1: These guys now are and we're in a new millennium
- 7:07Speaker 1: where guys are worried about their their brand. I was
- 7:10Speaker 1: never worried about my brain. You were nine innings, was
- 7:14Speaker 1: diving in the dugouts. I was playing with torn hamstrings.
- 7:17Speaker 1: These kids get mosquito bites right now and they go
- 7:19Speaker 1: on the DL because they're worried about their future. And
- 7:21Speaker 1: you know what, I wish I would have sort of
- 7:23Speaker 1: taken that approach a little bit too. You know in
- 7:26Speaker 1: those games, in those days when I played, the trainer
- 7:29Speaker 1: would open up the cabinet and go what do you
- 7:31Speaker 1: need to play? And I'm like, I need that, that
- 7:34Speaker 1: and that, and it just doesn't that's not I want
- 7:37Speaker 1: to know what that that that was? Listen. No, I've
- 7:40Speaker 1: played games on four or five Perko sets, so you
- 7:44Speaker 1: have to do what you gotta do to get out there.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I had a manager telling me, hey, you is better
- 7:49Speaker 1: than the backup you're talking about Todd Pratt. Now, he
- 7:53Speaker 1: was never my backup, although we rolled out. How about
- 7:58Speaker 1: the catching corps we had with the dog is when
- 8:00Speaker 1: Mike Socio was there. The worst, the worst decision in
- 8:04Speaker 1: Dodger history was to let Socia go and then he
- 8:07Speaker 1: went to the Angels. But it was myself, It was Piazza,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and then they traded him. It was myself. David ross
- 8:16Speaker 1: Um was in Triple A. I was in the Big Leags.
- 8:19Speaker 1: David Rossell was in Triple A. Russell Martin was in
- 8:22Speaker 1: Double A three and they just made Russell Martin to
- 8:24Speaker 1: catcher and he was getting compared to me. We all
- 8:27Speaker 1: became good friends. And now David's on ESPN and Russell's
- 8:31Speaker 1: still playing. I gotta give him a ton of credit. Man.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He's kept his body in shape and now catching back
- 8:36Speaker 1: for the Dodgers. So those were fun days, all right.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So where do you think Harper winds up at the
- 8:40Speaker 1: end of the day. I've said from day one that
- 8:46Speaker 1: that he's going to go back to d C. This
- 8:48Speaker 1: is all just deploy I mean, was that home run
- 8:52Speaker 1: Derby really that fake? He seems so like exhilarating that
- 8:56Speaker 1: his dad threw him BP and he won the home
- 8:58Speaker 1: run derby in front of his home cut. And I
- 9:02Speaker 1: wrote an article thinking he could be like alex Venchikin.
- 9:05Speaker 1: He could be that, why do you want to go
- 9:07Speaker 1: wander in the NLS. Stay in the n L East.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You can win in division. If you stay in d C.
- 9:13Speaker 1: You've got three pretty good starters. Now you get to
- 9:15Speaker 1: play the Medicine Marlins thirty eight times a year exactly
- 9:18Speaker 1: like uh. And then he's sort of be the hero.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You went on this whole big old tour, the call
- 9:25Speaker 1: Provano Tour. Remember that, let's let's go on the call
- 9:27Speaker 1: Pavano Tour. And came and signed back and beat the
- 9:31Speaker 1: Washington DC hero. But like, I don't see, it's just
- 9:33Speaker 1: you don't read about it. Maybe it's the calm before
- 9:36Speaker 1: the storm. But well, if people there now, I think
- 9:39Speaker 1: he's gonna end up in Philadelphia, and I'll tell you why,
- 9:41Speaker 1: because he knows he can put up monster numbers in Philadelphia.
- 9:45Speaker 1: All right, Well, for those interested in the team's Paul
- 9:48Speaker 1: just mentioned Philly is plus one twelve day are the favorite,
- 9:51Speaker 1: uh and the Nationals are plus thirteen forty seven. So
- 9:54Speaker 1: if I think he's going back there. I agree with you.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I think there's there's some about you in it, all right,
- 10:01Speaker 1: So let's let's shift focus a little bit here. He's
- 10:04Speaker 1: missing spring training, by the way, Paul, I mean, do
- 10:06Speaker 1: you think that's of concern at all? Well, it's a
- 10:10Speaker 1: tiny bit of concern because you want your timing back.
- 10:12Speaker 1: You probably need twenty to thirty to forty at bats
- 10:17Speaker 1: somewhere in that area. But he doesn't need to automatically,
- 10:22Speaker 1: you know me to be too worried, because what you
- 10:25Speaker 1: can do is like if a guy signs late, what
- 10:28Speaker 1: they'll do is they'll put him on the backfield. Or
- 10:30Speaker 1: I used to go to my manager and tell him, hey,
- 10:33Speaker 1: I I feel just I don't feel good right now
- 10:36Speaker 1: with my timing. Can I face some a ball? Double
- 10:39Speaker 1: A double A guys? So on the backfields they'll have
- 10:42Speaker 1: a ball and double A games and they'll let you
- 10:45Speaker 1: lead off every inning. If you're a veteran guy. Um,
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's a way to get eight, you know, seven eight
- 10:51Speaker 1: at bats in one day, and you get to see
- 10:53Speaker 1: a lot of pitches and it's sort of good to
- 10:55Speaker 1: see a bone double A kids. They got just a
- 10:57Speaker 1: good arms. But the difference is those kids will throw
- 11:01Speaker 1: one at your head at about ninety nine and then
- 11:03Speaker 1: one on the corner, so you don't really know. It's
- 11:04Speaker 1: an uncomfortable at BAD. So I'll probably do that. Whoever
- 11:07Speaker 1: signs Bryce, like, get him on the backfield, get him
- 11:10Speaker 1: something at BAD. So I'm not worried. He's a workout
- 11:12Speaker 1: freak two, so him being in shape, that's not going
- 11:15Speaker 1: to be the worry for whoever spents him. Now, talking
- 11:17Speaker 1: about spring training, there are some people out there who
- 11:20Speaker 1: bet on spring training baseball. Do you have any advice
- 11:24Speaker 1: for those people? Yeah, it's just I mean there's just
- 11:27Speaker 1: too many variables. Listen, you you know that I'll bet
- 11:31Speaker 1: on two roaches going across the floor. You know that. Um,
- 11:34Speaker 1: but I can't play spring training baseball. You know, half
- 11:40Speaker 1: the time that I my experiences was I was I
- 11:43Speaker 1: knew I was catching four or five innings. You know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: earlier in my career, I would go up swinging because
- 11:51Speaker 1: I was trying to make a team. And then as
- 11:54Speaker 1: I became the starting catcher, I did not care what
- 11:57Speaker 1: I hit in spring training. I wanted to see more
- 11:59Speaker 1: pitches because you know, um, Eric Carross came up to
- 12:04Speaker 1: me and said, why are you swinging at the first
- 12:05Speaker 1: pitch every time? I remember him telling me that my
- 12:08Speaker 1: second year, and I'm like, what are you talking about.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He goes, spring trains for you to see as many
- 12:12Speaker 1: pitches as you can, goes if you hit a double
- 12:14Speaker 1: in the gap on the first pitch, it does nothing
- 12:16Speaker 1: for you because but if you see seven eight pitches,
- 12:19Speaker 1: it's gonna get your timing back. So each guy's have
- 12:23Speaker 1: different approaches. Um, and then when I go catch, I
- 12:27Speaker 1: might catch like you know, Eric Ganni or Kevin Brown
- 12:30Speaker 1: or the guys that I caught in the future, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 1: in the past, and they would say, hey, I'm only
- 12:34Speaker 1: gonna throw a fastball today. No curveballs, no slidders, no changeups.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I'm only gonna throw like you know, two three innings.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Ganyer would come in and say, hey, listen, I'm gonna
- 12:44Speaker 1: work on my curveball, which is like his fourth best pitch.
- 12:47Speaker 1: So guys work on different things, and then you you
- 12:51Speaker 1: get the a ball double A kids that obviously got
- 12:53Speaker 1: the monster arms that are our prospects. But you just
- 12:56Speaker 1: don't know how they're going to react because they're trying
- 12:58Speaker 1: to make a splash and they can make a game
- 13:01Speaker 1: go sideways late. Yeah, and I agree with you. I
- 13:05Speaker 1: think betting spring training baseball is just asinine. I mean,
- 13:07Speaker 1: you've got players that don't really put full effort into it,
- 13:12Speaker 1: to say the least. You've got different rules in play,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you don't know who's playing from day to day. It's
- 13:17Speaker 1: just a mess. I would avoid it. Um, let's move
- 13:20Speaker 1: on and talk a little NFL. PAULI. We've got an
- 13:23Speaker 1: interesting scenario unfolding with Antonio Brown. The Steelers originally said
- 13:28Speaker 1: I think there were three teams interested. Now they say
- 13:30Speaker 1: that numbers grown. Where do you think Antonio Brown winds
- 13:34Speaker 1: up in Week one of next season? M M, that
- 13:38Speaker 1: is a good question, Jerry World do you think Dallas? Well,
- 13:43Speaker 1: here's my thing, he's the only guy that can make
- 13:45Speaker 1: the big enough splash and deal with that clown. Antonio
- 13:49Speaker 1: Brown's a clown. And here's the deal. Like when he
- 13:52Speaker 1: did the Facebook, when was the Facebook thing like three
- 13:54Speaker 1: years ago? Two years ago? He was two years ago.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I mean he was a clown after that, He's been
- 13:58Speaker 1: a clown ever since. Great receiver. I get it. I
- 14:02Speaker 1: get all the intangibles and what he brings. Piece of clown,
- 14:05Speaker 1: So you gotta deal with that, um and why why
- 14:12Speaker 1: would you want to leave that culture in Pittsburgh. I mean,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I guess it's um he to me. I think Antonio
- 14:21Speaker 1: Brown created the culture, created the bad culture in that clubhouse. Um.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You can say, um that Bell did, but you know
- 14:29Speaker 1: Bell was proven a point and he did what was
- 14:31Speaker 1: best for him for his future. Um. So Antonio Brown says,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I want out to and now this this whole thing
- 14:38Speaker 1: is gonna happen, and god knows who's gonna jump in late.
- 14:40Speaker 1: But the Cowboys are one great receiver and we saw
- 14:44Speaker 1: Mary Cooper elevate them a little bit. If they, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: or would be able to pull something off, Jerry would
- 14:51Speaker 1: be the guy that can do it. I mean, I
- 14:54Speaker 1: get that. The only the only hesitation I have is
- 14:57Speaker 1: that they gave up a first round pick for a
- 14:59Speaker 1: Mari Cooper this season, So I don't know that they're
- 15:03Speaker 1: gonna move more top draft capital to do it. The
- 15:07Speaker 1: team that I'm kind of looking at, and I know
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's a little bit out there, is the Arizona Cardinals.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And the reason I think the reason I think the
- 15:15Speaker 1: Cardinals could do it is I think they're going to
- 15:17Speaker 1: trade out of that one spot I don't think they're
- 15:19Speaker 1: gonna take Kyler Murray. I think they're gonna stick with Rosen.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And if they trade down and they get a bunch
- 15:25Speaker 1: of draft picks, they may spend some of those off
- 15:28Speaker 1: to Pittsburgh and figure, let's go with Rosen and give
- 15:31Speaker 1: him a top wide receiver and really give this thing
- 15:35Speaker 1: a go. Maybe Larry Fitzgerald can call Antonio Brown down
- 15:39Speaker 1: a little bit, um and maybe you know, he'll he'll
- 15:42Speaker 1: rub off on him a little bit. Yeah, that could
- 15:45Speaker 1: be a good play. Um. I thought they would be
- 15:48Speaker 1: in the mix, but they're saying now they're not, especially
- 15:50Speaker 1: with Grappoo coming back. That could be obviously uh sneaky,
- 15:54Speaker 1: But they're staying there out now. Yeah, it looks like
- 15:57Speaker 1: they are. And by the way, the Cardinals are at
- 16:00Speaker 1: plus one thousand, twenty one and the Cowboys at plus
- 16:04Speaker 1: one thousand ninety. The favorite is the forty nine Ers
- 16:09Speaker 1: at plus two thirty nine, followed by the Jets at
- 16:12Speaker 1: plus four eight. I could see the Jets getting involved,
- 16:15Speaker 1: but I think the Jets are more likely interested in
- 16:17Speaker 1: leave you on bell. Is it the Aaron Rodgers effact?
- 16:22Speaker 1: Maybe Steve farm Insurance can throw some money in. Maybe
- 16:25Speaker 1: maybe and get him. Speaking of the NFL, we had
- 16:30Speaker 1: the Uh, we had a I can't say bizarre story
- 16:34Speaker 1: because everyone is watching it. But Kyler Murray was at
- 16:39Speaker 1: Combine today and he got measured measured out a little
- 16:43Speaker 1: over five ten hand size of nine and a half inches.
- 16:46Speaker 1: For those of you interested, Darren, UM doesn't mean anything. Um,
- 16:55Speaker 1: which team is going to draft Kyler? Mary Paul? I
- 16:58Speaker 1: have no clue, and I said it before the kid
- 17:01Speaker 1: made the right choice. Um. Could he have got a
- 17:05Speaker 1: nice signing bonus in baseball, Yes, but baseball can sit
- 17:09Speaker 1: around from him if if this doesn't work out. But uh,
- 17:16Speaker 1: he's different type of player. He's so dynamic and now
- 17:20Speaker 1: the way the NFL is being played in the way
- 17:22Speaker 1: that they sort of protect the quarterback. Um, I think
- 17:28Speaker 1: he'll be okay. I mean, obviously it's explosive, but his height.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I'm surprised that he actually did hit five ten because
- 17:37Speaker 1: I was five ten in the program my whole life,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I can I'm barely touching five eight, So I'm surprised
- 17:42Speaker 1: that he actually, yeah, it's five ten, because usually that's
- 17:45Speaker 1: they would have listened to maybe a six one in
- 17:46Speaker 1: the program. It's the first time I can ever remember
- 17:49Speaker 1: someone measuring taller than what they were listening that actually
- 17:53Speaker 1: had to I would think a lot of Scott's be
- 17:55Speaker 1: a little excited. Also, he's put weight on too. He
- 17:58Speaker 1: he came in it like what two seven something like that.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I mean, he's added some some weight to his frame.
- 18:04Speaker 1: So I think that's going to help him. The teams
- 18:06Speaker 1: that I'm looking at for him, I'm looking at the
- 18:08Speaker 1: Raiders because the Raiders have so much draft capital um
- 18:13Speaker 1: sitting on three first round picks. I mean, if they
- 18:16Speaker 1: want to move up, they could trade two first round
- 18:18Speaker 1: picks and still have, uh, the second overall pick. I
- 18:22Speaker 1: mean the Raiders really, and they're sitting there at plus
- 18:25Speaker 1: seven hundred. There's good value there. The other team I'm
- 18:28Speaker 1: looking at is the one right below them, which is
- 18:30Speaker 1: the Washington Redskins a plus a thousand. This really feels
- 18:34Speaker 1: like a Dan Snyder kind of move, doesn't it. Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 1: he likes this kind of dynamic, bring the the excitement
- 18:40Speaker 1: in obviously. Um, I think this kid's gonna be okay. Um,
- 18:46Speaker 1: he's different than than other guys with his h height,
- 18:49Speaker 1: Like Manzelle had demons and other stuff going on and in,
- 18:53Speaker 1: but this kid is a different kind of athlete. And
- 18:56Speaker 1: when I watch him play baseball, um man, he reminds
- 18:59Speaker 1: me a lot of mooky bets are the way he
- 19:01Speaker 1: swings the bat, that's quick hands, and there's no doubt
- 19:05Speaker 1: in my mind he would he would succeed playing ball.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You can just tell by his swing. But listen, you know,
- 19:12Speaker 1: let's see what happens in the NFL draft. And I think,
- 19:14Speaker 1: like I said, I think he's making the right choice,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and I think he'll he'll he'll be okay in the NFL.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I really do. Yeah. I mean, listen, I was concerned
- 19:24Speaker 1: about his frame. I thought he'd be injury prone. But
- 19:27Speaker 1: we can't hit a quarterback anymore with him coming in
- 19:30Speaker 1: with him coming in five ten, two oh seven, I mean,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm less concerned. I thought he'd come in around. But
- 19:39Speaker 1: I think he's tougher than people to think. And again,
- 19:41Speaker 1: like just know, when the plays over, just slide, get down,
- 19:47Speaker 1: he's gonna get I understand his size, but when he
- 19:49Speaker 1: gets out of the pocket, he's just just gonna be dynamic.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So um, to me, drafting a smaller quarterback and smaller
- 19:57Speaker 1: frame quarterback is okay. Now with all the new rule
- 20:00Speaker 1: of not being able to touch a quarterback. Now, he
- 20:02Speaker 1: might take a late hit and and get hurt. But listen,
- 20:07Speaker 1: that's the chances you take when you draft a guy
- 20:09Speaker 1: that's that stature. But you're right, two, two or seven
- 20:12Speaker 1: and in five ten is not that bad. No, I
- 20:15Speaker 1: mean he he compares physically very well to Russell Wilson.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I mean the numbers are almost identical. So we'll see
- 20:21Speaker 1: what happens there. Um. But like I said, I'm taking
- 20:23Speaker 1: a look at the Raiders and the Redskins on that one. Um.
- 20:27Speaker 1: The Eagles announced yesterday, Paul that they will not put
- 20:31Speaker 1: a tag on Nick Foles. They will let him walk
- 20:33Speaker 1: into free agency. Where do you think nick Foles winds up?
- 20:37Speaker 1: I mean, is there is there any team other than
- 20:39Speaker 1: Jacksonville that makes as much sense? No, I was just
- 20:43Speaker 1: gonna say Jacksonville. Um, you know, I think Nick Foles
- 20:48Speaker 1: doesn't even carry ends up. I mean, here's a guy
- 20:50Speaker 1: that was on the brink of basically retiring, um twinning
- 20:54Speaker 1: a Super Bowl as the backup, and he really gets
- 20:56Speaker 1: no respect the kid. Um. Yeah, and he's finally going
- 21:01Speaker 1: to get his due, or at least get get get
- 21:02Speaker 1: a paid a um. And I think it's Jacksonville. He's
- 21:09Speaker 1: got this calmness about it. Listen, it's tough to play,
- 21:12Speaker 1: like I said, we were talking to it's tough to
- 21:13Speaker 1: play in Philadelphia. And the kid was able to play
- 21:17Speaker 1: on the stage, I mean on the big stage, on
- 21:22Speaker 1: the biggest stage, and was basically and the orchestrated the
- 21:27Speaker 1: Philly what are they called the Philly play whatever? He said,
- 21:30Speaker 1: let's run it. I mean that takes a pair of
- 21:32Speaker 1: pair of balls, Let's be honest. So you know, the
- 21:35Speaker 1: thing that that that surprises me is I feel like
- 21:39Speaker 1: Nick Foles has been in the league for a long time,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but he's actually a year younger than Kirk Cousins. And
- 21:45Speaker 1: last year Kirk Cousins got what nineties something million dollars
- 21:48Speaker 1: fully guaranteed over three years. Nick Foles isn't going to
- 21:51Speaker 1: touch that kind of money. What about? And it's crazy.
- 21:53Speaker 1: He is a Super Bowl m v P winning quarterback.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Who do you take Nick Foles case Keenum or or
- 22:02Speaker 1: or Kirk Cousin? Nick Foles exactly, stick Folds. Let me
- 22:07Speaker 1: the top quarterback in the NFL. Maybe, Okay, And here's
- 22:10Speaker 1: the other question. You you take your team and you're
- 22:14Speaker 1: starting right now, you take Ronado, Harper, Marcado Arnado. There
- 22:19Speaker 1: you go, the cheapest one, the one that's gonna stay
- 22:23Speaker 1: out of trouble. This is economics with Paul Laduca. It's
- 22:26Speaker 1: it's that simple. The Angels set themselves back twenty years.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Like I'm telling you, if the Dodgers signed, they're gonna
- 22:33Speaker 1: do the same thing the Angels did. They signed pool Holes,
- 22:35Speaker 1: Socio wanted Granky, Artie Moreno wanted Josh Hamilton's and pool Holes.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Now look what you got. You got a dead Angel
- 22:43Speaker 1: team for the last whatever ten years. So the same
- 22:47Speaker 1: thing is gonna happen with the Daughters or somebody that
- 22:50Speaker 1: signs Harper. Whoever signs Harper better be very smart. By
- 22:53Speaker 1: the way, are you recording this podcast that l a
- 22:55Speaker 1: X because I've heard car horns and airplanes both during
- 22:59Speaker 1: this this taping. Well, I'm I live sort of like
- 23:02Speaker 1: on this like crowded street. Yeah, it seems just like
- 23:05Speaker 1: zoomed by. I think they know they're here, they're trying
- 23:07Speaker 1: to take it. Maybe the paparazzi there trying to take pictures.
- 23:09Speaker 1: That sounds right, all right, PAULI as as always, you
- 23:13Speaker 1: uh you are a prolific better you you have said
- 23:16Speaker 1: that when we're in Vegas, you're gonna bet the board,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and I believe that. Um, what do you have in
- 23:21Speaker 1: the college slate tonight? We got a lot of college games?
- 23:23Speaker 1: What do you like? I'm on fire to last week?
- 23:27Speaker 1: Pretty good? What do you night? Not bad? Although I
- 23:30Speaker 1: got hosed Jordans Caroline from the Nevada wolf Pack for
- 23:34Speaker 1: a lot of people who don't know one of my
- 23:36Speaker 1: sleeper teams, and a lot of people who don't know
- 23:38Speaker 1: Jordan Caroline is the son of Simeon Rice. Remember Simeon Rice.
- 23:42Speaker 1: He was too late free throws cost me the cover
- 23:44Speaker 1: last night in Nevada. Uh. But I love the Johnnies
- 23:51Speaker 1: against Xavier tonight. How about that? Okay? I like the
- 23:55Speaker 1: Johnnies a little bit. Xavier had a big win. Um
- 23:58Speaker 1: their last game, they found the sort of they're they're
- 24:02Speaker 1: sort of one of those teams that is on the brink.
- 24:04Speaker 1: They beat Nova. The Villanova's to me not the same team. Um,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I think they are. People are starting to catch up
- 24:14Speaker 1: to him Phil Booths. Every time he gets the ball,
- 24:17Speaker 1: people are double triple team and stuff like that. So
- 24:20Speaker 1: I think it's a little bit of a funny win
- 24:21Speaker 1: and I like the Johnny Tonight St. John's over Xavier. Alright,
- 24:25Speaker 1: so that is the gambling portion of our program. But
- 24:29Speaker 1: now we're going to move into um what I think
- 24:31Speaker 1: is rapidly going to become everyone's favorite moment of their week,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and that's story time with Paul Laduca. Last week, Paul
- 24:38Speaker 1: told us his amazing story of Hideyo Nomo drinking over
- 24:42Speaker 1: thirty beers on a cross country flight and then waking
- 24:44Speaker 1: him up the next morning to go and eat with
- 24:46Speaker 1: the Iron Chef in Philadelphia. Uh. This week, Paul, if
- 24:51Speaker 1: I'm correct, you have a little bit of a spring
- 24:53Speaker 1: training story from the old Dodger Town in Vero Beach, Florida. Right. Yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 1: it's a true story, obvious. So all these are And
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna put out a picture on my Instagram on
- 25:05Speaker 1: my story and the guy in the top left corner,
- 25:09Speaker 1: his name is Dave Dickinson or Bones. He was a
- 25:12Speaker 1: clubhouse manager, so he can validate the Normo story. I
- 25:14Speaker 1: think we're gonna have him calling next week invalidate this story.
- 25:17Speaker 1: This is it was crazy. And when I when you
- 25:22Speaker 1: go to spring training, they bring a ton of catchers.
- 25:25Speaker 1: So in ninety seven those years they made me a catcher.
- 25:33Speaker 1: They would bring in a ball, double a stuff like that.
- 25:36Speaker 1: So I was just a young rookie and I remember
- 25:39Speaker 1: Mark Guthrie went up to Carols and like I said,
- 25:43Speaker 1: Carrols was my mentor um and he always, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: took care of me. And gut goes over to e
- 25:52Speaker 1: K and he goes, hey, who can of the young
- 25:54Speaker 1: kids can we trust around here to be the driver?
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm sitting there one what is he saying? And Carross
- 26:00Speaker 1: goes Luducas Luduca won't say a word, and he's the best.
- 26:04Speaker 1: By the way I've driven with you. I wouldn't trust
- 26:06Speaker 1: you to drive me across the street. So I'm like,
- 26:11Speaker 1: what's going on here? So now Gut three goes to
- 26:14Speaker 1: me and goes, hey, um, I'm gonna get your rent
- 26:17Speaker 1: a car for the whole spring training. Okay, So what
- 26:20Speaker 1: a lot of people don't realize if you're a minor
- 26:23Speaker 1: league player and not married, you have to live on Dodgertown.
- 26:26Speaker 1: In those days, Dodgertown was like a Marriott with like
- 26:29Speaker 1: a residence in um you stayed two guys in a room.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Usually you stayed with another catcher who are your same position.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Player that kind of deal, and you had a guard
- 26:38Speaker 1: at the gate, and our curfew was midnight, so you
- 26:42Speaker 1: could rent a car if you wanted to, but you
- 26:44Speaker 1: had to be home by midnight and there was a
- 26:45Speaker 1: guard guarding. So I tell Gut. I'm like, I can't
- 26:48Speaker 1: have I can have a rent a car, but I
- 26:51Speaker 1: can't leave after midnight. What do I need the rent
- 26:53Speaker 1: a car for. He goes, well, there's one condition. You
- 26:56Speaker 1: have to pick me up at any time if I
- 27:00Speaker 1: call you. I'm like, what do you mean? Because you
- 27:03Speaker 1: get a free rent of car for all spring training,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but you have to pick me up at any time
- 27:07Speaker 1: at night. I go, Gut, I can't I go. I
- 27:10Speaker 1: can't sneak past the guard. What do you mean? He's like,
- 27:16Speaker 1: I go, I have to drive the car out of Dodgertown.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I can't I go. He goes, well, what what can
- 27:22Speaker 1: you do? I go, Well, the backfields. There's woods in
- 27:26Speaker 1: the woods in the backfield had a tiny little parking
- 27:28Speaker 1: lot where people could park over there. I said, if
- 27:31Speaker 1: you guys tell me what nights you're going out on,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I will park the car over there. So he would
- 27:38Speaker 1: text me here and there they're going out going out
- 27:40Speaker 1: and nothing's happening. Nothing happening. I parked the car over there.
- 27:44Speaker 1: One night, I get a phone call at about two
- 27:46Speaker 1: in the morning. You gotta come get me. You gotta
- 27:49Speaker 1: come get me. I'm like, you gotta be kidding me.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I go, I can't Mark, I go. I gotta block
- 27:55Speaker 1: balls with Socia. At eight in the morning, He's like, no,
- 27:58Speaker 1: you gotta come get us. That's the deal. So now
- 28:02Speaker 1: to get out of Daughtertown, you have to hop get
- 28:05Speaker 1: out of the front, hop over. Basically climb over. It
- 28:09Speaker 1: was actually pretty simple climb. But you can climb up
- 28:11Speaker 1: the roof and you just had to climb over one
- 28:13Speaker 1: little fence. Wait, you had to climb up a roof. Yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 1: you have to climb up a roof and you have
- 28:18Speaker 1: to climb up a fence. It's how we snuck out
- 28:20Speaker 1: a daughter town. The only way you can sneak out,
- 28:22Speaker 1: you get out. You wanted to have a drink. Where
- 28:25Speaker 1: where did you have to go to pick up? I
- 28:28Speaker 1: had to pick him up in Melbourne? Had a strip club. Okay,
- 28:34Speaker 1: I was trying to find the name of it and
- 28:36Speaker 1: I still can't. So now it's a Melbourne, Florida strip club. Yes,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what else you So yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I thought all you need to know now, Like I'm
- 28:47Speaker 1: on the phone, by the way, the flip phone that
- 28:50Speaker 1: he gave me, um, and I'm asking him where he's
- 28:54Speaker 1: at now. Melbourne's like a thirty five minute drive. So
- 28:58Speaker 1: he had got me like a jeep Cherokee, like an
- 29:01Speaker 1: suv on purpose because he knew, you know, he'd have
- 29:03Speaker 1: guys with them. So I drive all the way to Melbourne,
- 29:07Speaker 1: walk into the Strip club. I look and there's just
- 29:12Speaker 1: boxes of pizza hut everywhere, and I'm like, look over
- 29:17Speaker 1: and there's Gut three with his arm around Ron Jeremy,
- 29:21Speaker 1: and I'm like, is this really happening right now? So
- 29:26Speaker 1: there's just like five relief pitchers in Ron Jeremy, and
- 29:29Speaker 1: all I hear is Gut three, go, Douca, you are
- 29:32Speaker 1: the man, Let's go. I go. What So you took
- 29:36Speaker 1: him back to Dodgertown, right, No, we're driving back to
- 29:39Speaker 1: Dodgertown about on. I don't even know what exit it was.
- 29:44Speaker 1: We're going to Denny's. I the next thing I know,
- 29:48Speaker 1: I am having moons over Mi Hammy with Ron Jeremy,
- 29:53Speaker 1: Mark Guthrie and a bunch of Dodger relievers. We got
- 29:57Speaker 1: out of there at I think at five fort by
- 30:00Speaker 1: the time we got back with six fifteen seven, I did.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I went straight to the field and straight to the field.
- 30:08Speaker 1: What happened with the shower and blocked balls with social
- 30:10Speaker 1: What happened with Ron Jeremy? Like, where did you take him?
- 30:13Speaker 1: After Denny's? He just left, Like those guys like went
- 30:18Speaker 1: there because Ron Jeremy was going to that strip club
- 30:21Speaker 1: that night. And I don't know if one of them,
- 30:23Speaker 1: I still don't know that just behind this story, like
- 30:25Speaker 1: did they know him or were like did they meet
- 30:27Speaker 1: him that night? I didn't ask questions. They was such
- 30:30Speaker 1: a bog. I saw pizza Hut. The fact that a
- 30:34Speaker 1: pizza Hut guy came to a strip club. God knows
- 30:37Speaker 1: what they gave that guy. It's Melbourne, It is true,
- 30:40Speaker 1: it's Melbourne. It but when I saw guts arm around,
- 30:45Speaker 1: I looked, I double took, like that's Ron Jeremy. Holy cow. Well,
- 30:51Speaker 1: when I saw like Ron Jeremy's here for the night
- 30:53Speaker 1: and he was signing autographs and all those towns got
- 30:57Speaker 1: his autograph too, I mean, like a young impressionable Paula
- 31:01Speaker 1: Duke a meeting. I never I was. I was a kid,
- 31:06Speaker 1: you know, I remember why. I'm like, this is the
- 31:10Speaker 1: big league life. A Melbourne, Florida strip club with Ron Jeremy.
- 31:18Speaker 1: It was like every stripper was coming up to Ron
- 31:20Speaker 1: and like you could have you could have set your
- 31:23Speaker 1: spatoon on his belly. I mean, like it was. It
- 31:29Speaker 1: was a sight to see that so many people. I
- 31:33Speaker 1: wanted to go home with Ron Jeremy. And and in
- 31:35Speaker 1: those days, like the sideburns were really kicking, and I
- 31:38Speaker 1: had some really good sideburns right there, and they couldn't
- 31:40Speaker 1: even touch Ron's. Wow, did you have any good stories?
- 31:46Speaker 1: He was pretty smoked, but he was telling a couple
- 31:48Speaker 1: of stories. Um, But when you he didn't really want
- 31:53Speaker 1: to talk about like the porn industry that much. It's
- 31:56Speaker 1: sort of like a job. It's like sort of like
- 31:57Speaker 1: when we don't want to talk about baseball a lot
- 32:00Speaker 1: off the field. We were trying to ask him a
- 32:02Speaker 1: bunch of questions this and that, but he wasn't really interested.
- 32:07Speaker 1: More guys like Dad are asking us questions like when
- 32:09Speaker 1: I later, when I talked to uh Gut three eight
- 32:13Speaker 1: and about it and Gut goes he came over and
- 32:16Speaker 1: recognized one of the other guys who I'm not gonna
- 32:19Speaker 1: mention that was there, Um, and he recognized him and
- 32:22Speaker 1: knew like there were a couple of Dodger guys and
- 32:25Speaker 1: you know, Ron wire to hang out with a bunch
- 32:26Speaker 1: of baseball players, and he was asking a bunch of
- 32:28Speaker 1: baseball questions. Actually he had no clue who I was.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I was just the designated driver that was an a
- 32:34Speaker 1: ball kid. Now you mentioned that Dodgertown you kind of
- 32:37Speaker 1: stayed in like a Marriott. Yeah, So that was the
- 32:41Speaker 1: thing we ended up figuring out you could not come back.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So I told Gut I like, listen, we that was
- 32:49Speaker 1: part of the reason why we went to Deny's because
- 32:51Speaker 1: I was driving and I'm like, I can't go back
- 32:53Speaker 1: to Dodgertown right now. Can I sleep at your house?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Because you could tell the security guard, hey, um, Mark
- 33:00Speaker 1: took me out to breakfast, and he's like, I didn't
- 33:02Speaker 1: see you leave, and like, yeah, he took me out
- 33:04Speaker 1: for breakfast. But if you came in at four in
- 33:06Speaker 1: the morning, you were popped, so you had to stay
- 33:09Speaker 1: out longer. So I stayed out longer. I just went
- 33:11Speaker 1: to Gut's house while he went to bed. Of course,
- 33:13Speaker 1: he was a veteran relief pitcher. He didn't have to
- 33:15Speaker 1: be into like nine or ten. He laid down for
- 33:18Speaker 1: a couple of hours. I just took guts to I
- 33:21Speaker 1: took him to his house. I waited to like seven
- 33:24Speaker 1: seven fifteen. I drove Dodger Town at seven thirty and
- 33:27Speaker 1: the security guard was like, did you leave. I'm like, yeah,
- 33:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna go get breakfast. I'm tired of eating the
- 33:33Speaker 1: breakfast here. He's like, okay, and that was your move.
- 33:36Speaker 1: You had to pull pulled in And I literally walked
- 33:39Speaker 1: straight into the clubhouse with with no sleep, um in
- 33:43Speaker 1: blocking balls and I remember I was in the shower
- 33:46Speaker 1: and all those guys just laughed at me. Um. But
- 33:50Speaker 1: that was the only time the guy I had a
- 33:52Speaker 1: free car. They were laughing at the shower because you
- 33:54Speaker 1: were out because they know and they knew what they
- 33:56Speaker 1: did they had done to me. But they all like
- 33:58Speaker 1: came up to me and said thanks, because you know,
- 34:00Speaker 1: I had to drag him out of there. They were
- 34:02Speaker 1: being obnoxious. You know, when you end up being the
- 34:04Speaker 1: sober guy in that situation. In a strip club in Melbourne,
- 34:09Speaker 1: when Ron, Jeremy and five Los Angeles Dodgers. You sort
- 34:12Speaker 1: of trying to clean up the mess. You know, when
- 34:14Speaker 1: Paul Laduka is the responsible adult in the room, something
- 34:18Speaker 1: has gone horribly wrong. But where I was going with
- 34:21Speaker 1: the Marriott hotel thing, Paul is a lot of baseball
- 34:25Speaker 1: players will use alias is when they check into hotels.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Is that something you've ever done? Of course, what did
- 34:33Speaker 1: you use? Well, h Chuck E Cheese was my alias.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I used Danny Zuko a couple of times. Tell me
- 34:41Speaker 1: more about using Chuck E Cheese in a hotel. Well,
- 34:46Speaker 1: Chuck E Cheese was my daughter's favorite place to go to.
- 34:49Speaker 1: So I just like in two thousand and one, when
- 34:52Speaker 1: I started like going off, I didn't realize that like
- 34:56Speaker 1: guy's had aliases. But my phone was ringing it sick
- 35:00Speaker 1: in the morning, seven the morning, eight in the morning,
- 35:02Speaker 1: and I came to the clubhouse. So we were in
- 35:04Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and uh, Carols came up to I went up
- 35:08Speaker 1: to Carrols like these people cone and He's like, you
- 35:11Speaker 1: don't have an alias. I'm like no. He goes, dude,
- 35:15Speaker 1: you need an alias, like you have to. They're gonna
- 35:18Speaker 1: call your room all the time. And he goes, look
- 35:20Speaker 1: at the back of the pamphlet. So whenever you get
- 35:24Speaker 1: your money, you get your money for your preper dam
- 35:27Speaker 1: up front before you go on the road, and you
- 35:29Speaker 1: get it in cash, and then you'll get the name list.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And I never looked at the nameless well I started
- 35:34Speaker 1: looking at it was like Mr Flacco. It was like, uh,
- 35:39Speaker 1: Mr bean Um. It was crazy. Everybody had an aliens
- 35:44Speaker 1: and so I just came up with Chucky Cheese. So
- 35:48Speaker 1: we go to Philadelphia and right after Pittsburgh and my
- 35:53Speaker 1: ex wife was with me at the time, and she
- 35:57Speaker 1: would never call me during the game, but she's me
- 36:00Speaker 1: at literally five o'clock and I think it was like
- 36:05Speaker 1: a six fifteen game, and she called the clubhouse, and
- 36:09Speaker 1: the club house marriage like, Paul, your wife's on the phone,
- 36:12Speaker 1: like what it's everything okay. I go call Oh. I'm
- 36:18Speaker 1: like are you okay? Okay? She's like, are you kidding me?
- 36:21Speaker 1: I'm like what. She's like, can you please talk to
- 36:24Speaker 1: this lady. I'm like whine, like I'm at the front
- 36:26Speaker 1: desk and they will not let me in because I
- 36:28Speaker 1: don't have an I D That says Mrs Cheese. That
- 36:35Speaker 1: is a true story. She couldn't get back in the room,
- 36:43Speaker 1: she went to the gym. This is Mrs Cheese. Yeah
- 36:49Speaker 1: that's true. Oh god, damn it, you're a national treasure.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Just think three days in Vegas with me, black Jack.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I can't wait. Wait all right, everybody, I think, I think.
