- 0:51Don Armstrong: Thank you so much for joining us today at the Lupi Tortilla Tex Mex in Katy, Texas.
- 0:56Don Armstrong: And if you're wondering where that is on the west side, we're pretty much at the intersection of I-10 and 99, the Grand Parkway.
- 1:03Don Armstrong: But it's not quite that simple.
- 1:05Don Armstrong: So you need to get off, and the real place where we are is at Kingsland Boulevard.
- 1:12Don Armstrong: Kingsland and 99.
- 1:14Jeff Dziekan: So the West Timer, south of the I-10.
- 1:16Don Armstrong: Just put it in your key map.
- 1:18Don Armstrong: They don't even make that anymore, do they?
- 1:20Don Armstrong: No.
- 1:21Don Armstrong: Key maps?
- 1:22SPEAKER_06: Look for the big red and green Luby Tortilla sign and you'll find us.
- 1:26Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 1:26Don Armstrong: Well, you may want to pull your microphone a little bit closer to your mouth.
- 1:30Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 1:30Don Armstrong: He doesn't care.
- 1:31Don Armstrong: How's that, my friend?
- 1:33Don Armstrong: I guess it's just fine.
- 1:36Don Armstrong: Stan Holt is uh over there.
- 1:38Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 1:38Don Armstrong: And he's not even paying.
- 1:40Don Armstrong: It's so funny because you know you would say that oh, Stan Holt is here.
- 1:45Don Armstrong: And uh you go you you would you would think that that um he would look over here, but not.
- 1:56Don Armstrong: He's over there.
- 1:57Don Armstrong: Would you like to join us?
- 1:59Don Armstrong: Because we we're looking kind of for a guest.
- 2:02Don Armstrong: He's two-fisting it this morning.
- 2:04Don Armstrong: Um he's got a Pepsi Cola and a and a non-Pepsi cola.
- 2:10Don Armstrong: Non-Pepsi Cola.
- 2:14Don Armstrong: You have to sit down and put a headset on because we can't hear you.
- 2:18Don Armstrong: Liver and onions.
- 2:19Don Armstrong: Uh huh.
- 2:19Don Armstrong: Pure aid.
- 2:21SPEAKER_06: That's why you gave up for Lant.
- 2:24Don Armstrong: Uh so um Stan, by the way, is the founder of Lupi Tortilla and a true car guy, and that's how I got to know him uh basically at the drag races, and our first encounter was dinner at the PF Chang's in Las Vegas.
- 2:41Don Armstrong: And um I I cried pretty much laughing through the entire dinner, and um I thought this is a guy that I need to get to know.
- 2:50Don Armstrong: Now that I know him, uh we can't get enough of him.
- 2:56Don Armstrong: Does his microphone not with?
- 2:57Jeff Dziekan: Yes, it's fine.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, can you hear me now?
- 3:00SPEAKER_06: Can hear you now.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: You needed to explain it was at the RuPaul drag races.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: The RuPaul drag races.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: He took first second and third.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Have you ever watched that?
- 3:11Don Armstrong: He took first, second, and third.
- 3:12Don Armstrong: I know.
- 3:14Don Armstrong: Have you ever watched that?
- 3:15Don Armstrong: I haven't.
- 3:16Don Armstrong: No?
- 3:16Don Armstrong: I haven't either.
- 3:17Don Armstrong: Yes, you have.
- 3:19Don Armstrong: I've passed by it.
- 3:20Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:20Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:21Don Armstrong: I don't even know what it's about, but it sounds like it's fun.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: About an hour.
- 3:24Don Armstrong: I will tell you that.
- 3:27Don Armstrong: There was a place in San Francisco, and I was with Rob Geiger, and I can't remember the guy's name that uh that was the PR guy for Mach One, which was a freight forwarding kind of company, uh handler or whatever.
- 3:41Don Armstrong: And um I remember that he and his wife lived in Oakland, right across the bay.
- 3:47Don Armstrong: Uh, because he said, hey, why don't you join my wife and I?
- 3:51Don Armstrong: We'll take you guys to dinner.
- 3:52Don Armstrong: Well, sure, we had a night off, so we went to dinner in San Francisco, and it was a place called Asia SF.
- 3:59Don Armstrong: Asia San Francisco.
- 4:00Don Armstrong: You look at the menu, it's American Chinese food, is what it was.
- 4:07Don Armstrong: Well, it was in a part of San Francisco that all of the buildings were probably built in the 1930s.
- 4:13Don Armstrong: Everything, including the windows, were all painted white.
- 4:16Don Armstrong: Everything for blocks.
- 4:18Don Armstrong: Except for this one place.
- 4:20Don Armstrong: You know, it was one of those old buildings where it sat on the corner, but the entrance to it was on the corner.
- 4:26Don Armstrong: So they kind of like saw it off at an angle.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: At an angle.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:29Don Armstrong: And you walk in, and the vestibule, if you will, was tiny and a little desk there, and it's really good looking, and the really good-looking girl comes up and says, Hi, may I help you?
- 4:40Don Armstrong: Yes, we have reservations at five.
- 4:41Don Armstrong: Well, we've just opened five o'clock.
- 4:44Don Armstrong: Great.
- 4:44Don Armstrong: Let me take you to your table.
- 4:46Don Armstrong: We go in, it's a big place.
- 4:48Don Armstrong: Got a horseshoe bar in the middle of it, but it's big.
- 4:50Don Armstrong: It's got lots of tables and a whole set of tables and chairs around the perimeter.
- 4:57Don Armstrong: So you have a bench seat up against the wall, and then two chairs and a bar stool, bar type table.
- 5:04Don Armstrong: So we sit down and um the waitress comes over and she is absolutely knockout.
- 5:11Don Armstrong: Golly, she's gorgeous.
- 5:13Don Armstrong: And I'm going, uh and she said, Well, let me explain the menu to you.
- 5:18Don Armstrong: We have five courses, and we start with, you know, soup, appetizer thing, and it goes, yeah, la la la.
- 5:23Don Armstrong: I'm going, my god, she's fine.
- 5:26Don Armstrong: She is hot.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Well, we go through dinner.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: She wasn't on a menu, though.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: No.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: We go through She was on a woo mu menu.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: So we go.
- 5:41Don Armstrong: We go through we go through dinner all of the different uh things of dinner, and uh we're just about ready for dessert, and she says, I I have something I had to do.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Fly on your egg.
- 5:53Don Armstrong: I have something I have to do.
- 5:55Don Armstrong: That's okay, he's used to it.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Extra.
- 5:57Don Armstrong: Um and she says, I got something extra to do.
- 6:01Don Armstrong: I said, Well, that's okay.
- 6:02Don Armstrong: We're not in any big hurry.
- 6:04Don Armstrong: We'd had a couple of cocktails, and everything was good.
- 6:07Don Armstrong: So she goes off.
- 6:09Don Armstrong: And by this time, I mean, we're 20 minutes into it's like 520, 5:30.
- 6:15Don Armstrong: This place is packed.
- 6:16Don Armstrong: There's a huge wedding party over there.
- 6:19Don Armstrong: All these girls, all you know, one of the girls' night out thing, the whole nine yards.
- 6:25Don Armstrong: Okay?
- 6:26Don Armstrong: But I'm still stuck on this waitress.
- 6:29Don Armstrong: She's now gone off to the back.
- 6:31Don Armstrong: And the lights go down, even though it's daylight outside.
- 6:35Don Armstrong: Lights go down.
- 6:36Don Armstrong: And, ladies and gentlemen, the announcer says, please welcome to the stage Candace.
- 6:44Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:45Don Armstrong: Up from the back of the bar, there's like a curtain.
- 6:48Don Armstrong: The curtain opens, and here she comes, steps up there.
- 6:50Don Armstrong: And a Barbara Streisand song comes on, and she starts lip-syncing it, and I'm going, wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 7:00Don Armstrong: It's a man.
- 7:02Don Armstrong: No.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: No.
- 7:07Don Armstrong: Because it turns out all of the way.
- 7:11Don Armstrong: Oh my goodness.
- 7:11Don Armstrong: She did not have an Adam's apple, but I think that she had something else.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: I had a question.
- 7:15Don Armstrong: Is it got a goal?
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: What does that have to do with cars?
- 7:18Don Armstrong: It has absolutely nothing to do with it.
- 7:20Don Armstrong: He's trying to tell the story of how he met you.
- 7:22Don Armstrong: Oh, that's what I've got a weird segue.
- 7:25Jeff Dziekan: I wrote notes.
- 7:26Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 7:27Don Armstrong: But in any way, I thought that you would enjoy it.
- 7:30Don Armstrong: And of course, you know, the laugh was on the mouth.
- 7:32Don Armstrong: The laugh was on the one guy.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: That was there.
- 7:35Don Armstrong: And uh it was also on Rob Geiger because he was fooled too.
- 7:38Don Armstrong: He's like, Yeah, she's hot.
- 7:40Don Armstrong: Well, Rob, guess what?
- 7:41Don Armstrong: I guess we're gonna do a threesome down in the basement.
- 7:45Don Armstrong: Oh no.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: That wouldn't have changed Rob's mind, that little detail.
- 7:49Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 7:50Don Armstrong: Anyway, so there is my story to lead off the Easter edition of the tailpipes and tacos.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: When we were in Beaumont, yes, was it you that did that long um extra day or whatever?
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: It was me.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: About what was the subject?
- 8:06Jeff Dziekan: It was um what was it?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: Heck, I don't remember.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: You're asking me.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you were razzing me after.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: I know, because I said, could you tell me more about it?
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:15Jeff Dziekan: Started over.
- 8:16Jeff Dziekan: Gosh, I don't remember now.
- 8:18SPEAKER_06: What did we do last week?
- 8:19Jeff Dziekan: We were talking about the tools, it was one segments.
- 8:21Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 8:21Jeff Dziekan: Well, that was last week as we were in the studio.
- 8:23SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_06: Two weeks ago.
- 8:25SPEAKER_06: That's two weeks ago.
- 8:25SPEAKER_06: I can't remember that.
- 8:28Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 8:29Jeff Dziekan: But it wasn't in San Francisco.
- 8:30Jeff Dziekan: No.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: By the way, I won't but I think rumor has it she did drive a car to work.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Squeeze that in.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: That's what that's what she was.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: She was pre-Uber, so she had to go.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: I appreciate for the listening and watching audience, you guys all have loopy tortilla motorsports surface.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we do.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: I asked Sheila's brother-in-law.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: I ran off, I won one of the new wallies.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: You won?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: Just a class race, but I still got one of the new Wallies.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: So they're different than any Wally before.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: It has a diamond for the diamond anniversary.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: 15th anniversary.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: It's got a black pedestal with a diamond.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: I'm sure if it's real, I'll have him take it back.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: And then it has the silver walleye on it instead of the gold one.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: So he's got a he ran back to the hangar to get it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: I thought he'd be internet.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: Yes, we definitely will.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 9:24Don Armstrong: And somewhere is the uh Lupi Tortilla chili pepper trophy somewhere.
- 9:28Don Armstrong: Oh, there they are right there.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: Hidden in plain sight.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 9:31Don Armstrong: Um, but anyway, I don't know where all this was going, but uh the beginning of our friendship was in Las Vegas.
- 9:38Don Armstrong: And um I believe that uh that was gone.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Moved on to Pomona, and we were like on a world tour.
- 9:44Don Armstrong: Yeah, we in the United States.
- 9:46Don Armstrong: Yeah, never left the country.
- 9:48Don Armstrong: Yeah, amazing.
- 9:49Don Armstrong: So I want to tell everybody this is uh the oh that's Mike the Muffler.
- 9:55Don Armstrong: There's Mr.
- 9:56Don Armstrong: Heitzman.
- 9:56Don Armstrong: Yeah, Jeff Heitzman, ladies and gentlemen, has made a personal appearance all the way from NASA.
- 10:03Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: NASA.
- 10:04Don Armstrong: He just got off the uh the spaceship.
- 10:07Don Armstrong: That's it.
- 10:08Don Armstrong: Jeff Heitz is making a personal appearance.
- 10:10Don Armstrong: But anyway, part of his program.
- 10:11Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:12Don Armstrong: He's part of our program.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: And um good.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: Nice to see you.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: Hi, Jeff.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: He's got a shirt on.
- 10:18Don Armstrong: I like that.
- 10:18Jeff Dziekan: Do you need an autograph or anything?
- 10:21Don Armstrong: Good to see you.
- 10:22Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_07: Watch the cable, watch the cable, watch the cable.
- 10:24Don Armstrong: Yes, don't step on the cable for God's sakes.
- 10:27Don Armstrong: Um anyway, so today's big event here at the Lupi Tortilla, Tex Mex in Katy.
- 10:32Don Armstrong: This is one of your bigger restaurants.
- 10:34Don Armstrong: Successful restaurants.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: This is the uh well, that's turned into a rumor in the last week, but until last week, this was the busiest loopies of all 32.
- 10:44Jeff Dziekan: So do they have competitions in different areas against each other?
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: No, it just came up in a conversation because I thought this was busiest.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: And Chet said, no, they have one somewhere doing nine million a year.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I'm really proud of this is doing eight million a year.
- 11:04Jeff Dziekan: This is gonna put you over the top.
- 11:05Jeff Dziekan: That's what I think.
- 11:06Jeff Dziekan: I think so too.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Well, and there's two reasons, several reasons we do this car show.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Uh one of it, of course, we like cars, and then it's a give back thing, and for surely kids, but that one in Beaumont, it really kind of another way to put you on the map without advertising.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: And you're on a freeway and people drive by and see all the cars and curiosity and the posters and everything legal.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: And the NWL Time show.
- 11:30Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, they say, I thought those guys were in jail.
- 11:32Jeff Dziekan: I was getting to that before you stuck your foot in the aisle.
- 11:34Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, I did.
- 11:36Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: But anyway, it's uh it's right.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: I I I was concerned about the turnout because they're talking about rain and so on and so forth.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: But I'd reached a spot that it's kind of like a Go for it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: No, you have a party, and the people that are there are the ones you want to see anyway, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 11:54Don Armstrong: Well, as I said at the beginning in our tease this morning when we first got on the air, I said, you know what, there are two kinds of car guys.
- 12:01Don Armstrong: They're the cruising kind of car guys, and then there are car show guys.
- 12:05Don Armstrong: And the car show guys have their car, they trailer it, and you know, don't touch it, don't let it get wet.
- 12:10Don Armstrong: Okay, well, that's fine if that's what you want.
- 12:13Don Armstrong: We or car guys, we like to drive our cars.
- 12:16Don Armstrong: And I can tell you a story that is interesting, and the fact that back in the early days when I had the other 77 Corvette, all painted up.
- 12:26Don Armstrong: I mean, uh pen stripes on the underside of it.
- 12:29Don Armstrong: I did the whole nine yards and trailered it in an open trailer up to Oklahoma City where there was snow.
- 12:35Don Armstrong: And it rained and it snowed all the way there.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: That car would have fit right in in Oklahoma.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially in the frame.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah.
- 12:43Don Armstrong: Didn't win anything, but I spent an entire 24 hours trying to clean it up.
- 12:48Don Armstrong: And I managed to do that quite well.
- 12:50Don Armstrong: Did not win a trophy or anything, but yeah, you know, and um cars are meant to drive in my world.
- 12:56Don Armstrong: You've seen our we have the Playboy bunnies here.
- 12:58Jeff Dziekan: See, I need ears.
- 12:59Jeff Dziekan: I want to get some ears.
- 13:01Jeff Dziekan: I'll wear them.
- 13:02Jeff Dziekan: You will look good on you.
- 13:04Jeff Dziekan: I think it's a look.
- 13:05Jeff Dziekan: Maybe a bunny tail.
- 13:06Jeff Dziekan: Oh, yeah.
- 13:07Jeff Dziekan: A little poofy money.
- 13:08Don Armstrong: You know, uh, my mind is going in a different direction with the bunny tail thing.
- 13:14Don Armstrong: No.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: Actually, the Easter bunny's gonna be here.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, is he?
- 13:17Don Armstrong: Yeah, she's been advertised all week.
- 13:19Don Armstrong: Good.
- 13:19Don Armstrong: Well, my grandson and daughter are supposed to be here too.
- 13:22Don Armstrong: Oh, really?
- 13:23Don Armstrong: Yeah, nice.
- 13:23Don Armstrong: So we're looking forward to uh having them.
- 13:26Don Armstrong: I know Sheila's all excited about it.
- 13:28Don Armstrong: I know.
- 13:28Don Armstrong: I talked to her last night, she says, Yes, Dad, we're planning on coming out.
- 13:32Don Armstrong: Sheila, you mean Amy.
- 13:33Don Armstrong: Amy, sorry, yes.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: And um why was he talking to my wife?
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 13:38SPEAKER_07: It's the ears.
- 13:39Don Armstrong: The ears.
- 13:40Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:41Don Armstrong: That's funny because I met Sheila the same time I met you.
- 13:44Don Armstrong: You did.
- 13:45Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:46Don Armstrong: So on the short bus.
- 13:48Don Armstrong: That's exactly.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Up to the Pomona Mining Company.
- 13:51Don Armstrong: By the way, is that still there?
- 13:52Don Armstrong: It is.
- 13:53Don Armstrong: Is it?
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: I haven't been in inside, but I saw it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: It's still there.
- 13:57Don Armstrong: It's up there, the parking lot down below in the and the travel parking lot.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: You take the short bus to the top.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Where the restaurant is.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: The short bus had a pole, which you use all the way to the top.
- 14:07Don Armstrong: Yes, once I got my uh red pumps off.
- 14:09Don Armstrong: Yes.
- 14:10Don Armstrong: Uh-huh.
- 14:10Don Armstrong: I had to do that one.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Where you can really make the moves.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: But um, I hope my son shows up in the poster car.
- 14:17Don Armstrong: Oh, does he does he have the poster car?
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he has that little iseta.
- 14:21Don Armstrong: Oh god.
- 14:22Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:22Don Armstrong: And I said it with the original engine in it?
- 14:24Don Armstrong: Everything's original.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's better than original.
- 14:27Don Armstrong: I'm sure.
- 14:28Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:29Don Armstrong: Does he still have the back to the future car?
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: He does.
- 14:32Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: That's a big hit wherever he takes.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: One of his sons might drive that here.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: Boy, that is a beautiful El Camino driver through here.
- 14:39Don Armstrong: It certainly is.
- 14:40Don Armstrong: Uh, you know, I saw online this week that apparently Chevrolet is going to uh have a competitor to the Ford Maverick, and they're gonna call it the El Camino.
- 14:50Don Armstrong: Now, what it is gonna look like is a different story, but it won't be like that.
- 14:55Don Armstrong: But it's gonna be a c a competitor to the Maverick.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: The Maverick.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Look at this, isn't it pretty?
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: How unusual.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 15:02Don Armstrong: I like the paint.
- 15:03Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: So thanks for coming.
- 15:06Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 15:07Don Armstrong: Um it was it was uh kind of a surprise, but not a surprise that they would use the El Camino name, but Ford used the Maverick name.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: They've been threatening forever to reintroduce the El Camino, but they don't do it.
- 15:19Don Armstrong: Yeah, well apparently that's in the works, from what I understand, for a 2027 model year debut.
- 15:25Don Armstrong: So it's a year away.
- 15:28Don Armstrong: Um car industry is in uh turmoil, obviously.
- 15:31Don Armstrong: A little bit, yeah.
- 15:32Don Armstrong: Just a little bit.
- 15:33Don Armstrong: Yeah, with the with the EV stuff.
- 15:35Don Armstrong: Uh they've you know bet the bank on going EVs and Porsche's Porsche's backpedaling on the EV deal.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I saw that.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: All of them are just their new model, Porsche backpedal.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Yes, instead of EV or yes, that's the backpack.
- 15:51SPEAKER_07: Like the old paddle boats you can get on the lake.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Um on the racing front, please.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: The um the Lupi Tortilla team.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: But the uh 55 Chevy wagon is coming along.
- 16:03Don Armstrong: Oh that's the one that you told us about last week.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm gonna try to.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Well, this is a real Stan Holt deal.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: I'm not bragging, I'm complaining, and but it it even Jared, our good friend at Cruci, said so the project started.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: I always admired this guy's 55 Chevy Superstar wagon.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: It's sat showroom level.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: Pretty car nice, you know.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: Um and every year at NDU I would make him an offer, and every year he would decline it.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: So we finally got together on a number, and the reason what started it is I had a 283, a brand new 283.
- 16:38Don Armstrong: Racing engine?
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Racing engine.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: I had a brand new, fresh out of the box four-speed.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: I think you're a third of the way there, maybe 40% of the way there because with the engine and transport.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: Just in parts, yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the engine's like 40 grand.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: You're 38.5.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: But you're you're there.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: So we buy the car, we send the roller up to Ohio to a place called PK Racing Cars.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: It was a ladder bar car, I don't know if you know what that means.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Ladder frame.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: We had it four-linked, and he said, What do you think?
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: And I said, I want it slammed to the ground, four-linked, SEMA ready, right?
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 17:15Don Armstrong: And what class is it gonna race in?
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: Superstock.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: Superstock.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Well, that's that's the punchline.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: So we were at the race in in Louisiana, and I said, Jared, I had an epiphany.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: I said, Oh lord.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: You taking anything?
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Uh clutch medicine.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: Anyway, uh, he said, what?
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: I said, well, who wants three quarters of a dream?
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: I said, what are you talking about?
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I said, here we go.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: You think you could sell that 283?
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: He said, what?
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: The whole project's based on a 283.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: I want to put an LS in it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: So I can then have a five-speed.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: And I want to open the hood for nobody but NHRA to inspect it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: That shiny fuel injection cap is sitting on top of the LS.
- 18:05SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, car because you already own the 283 in the transmission.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: Now you want to shut the transmission and get a new transmission in a new engine.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: So a new LS built by the right guys is about 40 grand.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: He calls a friend of ours who had three of them.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: Two of them still in the crate, spares.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: So I was able to buy it for 25,000.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: We're now allowed to run titanium valves and stuff for lighter and faster, they say.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: So anyway, that whole project that started off because I had a 283 and a four-speed.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: The 283 is for sale, if anybody's listening.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: So uh anyway, it's gonna be a really exciting car.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: I I was doing it.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: The concept was to slow down.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: As I'm aging, I thought, well, rather than stand behind a car, I'll just slow down.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: You know, be running running the tens.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: It'll be that'll be great.
- 19:04SPEAKER_07: So so what does that do to your class?
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: Well, it'll be it'll be superstock GT something.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: We don't know what the letter is at this point.
- 19:13SPEAKER_07: So it's still an offshoot of the superstock class.
- 19:16SPEAKER_07: It's still superstock.
- 19:17SPEAKER_07: It's like a modified superstock.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you're super stock, and once you you can run any Chevrolet engine, any combination you want to, any year, and then it becomes superstock GT.
- 19:28SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: So the nice thing about the LS is you can run, you know, if they hit you with horsepower, you can say, okay, well, now it's an 88.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I changed my mind.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: So, but it's gonna go from a high 10-second car to a low nine-second car.
- 19:46SPEAKER_06: It should be a little bit easier to maintain because of fuel injection and everything.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, they're they're not hard to maintain, but it'll have rack and pinion, and it's just gonna be a beautiful low-to-the-ground type.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: Almost a show car, but it's gonna be a positive.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Until you give it to Sheila.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:04Don Armstrong: She doesn't like the Liberty, so I'll say the Liberty Transmission.
- 20:08Don Armstrong: Um, so are you going to trailer it?
- 20:13Don Armstrong: Are you gonna drive it to the racetrack?
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Oh no, you can't trail it.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: 600 rear gear.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, stop for gas every 12, 15 miles, yeah, every four or five miles.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: But the point of the story is we're hoping to debut the car in Indy this year.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: That's the goal.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Uh which is Labor Day weekend.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: And it's uh it's it's in paint right now, and then upholstery, and ready to go.
- 20:38SPEAKER_06: You mentioned SEMA earlier.
- 20:39SPEAKER_06: You guys can take it to SEMA?
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it'll still look that good after a few races in SEMA.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: We'll have patina.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: A little patina, patina.
- 20:48SPEAKER_07: Rocks, but if you take it as a race car, then you know.
- 20:52Don Armstrong: Well, you just need to find somebody's booth to put it in.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have a booth there, don't you?
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Oh well.
- 20:57Don Armstrong: It's the Lupi Tortilla booth that I'll manage.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: What a koinky dame.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Pinstrike the frame.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Pinchripe the frame.
- 21:03Don Armstrong: So Stan is hosting this tailpipes and tacos event at the Lupi Tortilla Tex Mex in Katie.
- 21:08Don Armstrong: Always good to talk to you.
- 21:09Don Armstrong: We can have you back at the end of the show and kind of wrap things up.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Like the Carson show I've done here.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Well, um back to the green room.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Get on the rollback.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Can we get a rollback for Stan?
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: I have a my the act that's probably gonna follow me pretty soon is a lot prettier than me, even though it is radio.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: We got video.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, we have video.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah, we got video.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: In case she doesn't forget, in case she does forget, I always have to give a shout out to the Emmons brothers.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Great, great close friends in racing and first close friends in general.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Great guys.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: The last two races uh have uh been beaten by the elder Speedy Emmons.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Speedy up the the first time was the two thousand running out the backdoor race.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: So it was really a good race.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: And I was all set for my sweet revenge at His last race, I dumped the clutch, and the car went.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what it was a little fuse.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: On the floor, there's all the fuses for everything.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: There's lights on each one.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: You can look down to see that it's out.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: But what happened when I lost the car, the wheel stand, it went off.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: When it came down, it came back on.
- 22:22SPEAKER_06: What was it for?
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: I mean, what was the light?
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: I mean, what circuit?
- 22:25SPEAKER_06: The ignition.
- 22:26SPEAKER_06: Oh, the ignition.
- 22:27SPEAKER_06: Shut everything off.
- 22:28Jeff Dziekan: We got that problem with the camera.
- 22:29Jeff Dziekan: That could be a problem.
- 22:30Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 22:31Jeff Dziekan: Exactly.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Anyway, just a little.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: It's always good to see you through the club.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Thanks for being here.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: I'm uh I don't understand these weak guys.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: The car count right now is pretty low.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: It's a little early.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: There's always a 50-50 chance of rain in Texas.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: So but there's some cars I don't remember seeing before.
- 22:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: I brought my car.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: That's a driver.
- 22:52Jeff Dziekan: Nice Volkswagen bus coming in there.
- 22:54Jeff Dziekan: There you go.
- 22:55Don Armstrong: He probably just came from lunch.
- 22:57Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 22:59Don Armstrong: Delivery in the back.
- 23:00Don Armstrong: Thank you guys for coming out.
- 23:01Don Armstrong: Thank you very much.
- 23:02Don Armstrong: Hey, um, just ahead, Jeff's car culture and repairs that may signal it's time to sell that old game.
- 23:09Don Armstrong: Yeah.

- 25:07Don Armstrong: We hope you join us live or online.
- 25:09Don Armstrong: And thanks for being with us today.
- 25:11Don Armstrong: All right, Jeff's car culture.
- 25:12Don Armstrong: Car repairs that signal it's time to sell.
- 25:15Jeff Dziekan: Yep, well, uh fix it or sell it.
- 25:17Jeff Dziekan: These repairs usually mean it's time to move on.
- 25:20Jeff Dziekan: And the way to do that is every car reaches a point where repairs start to cost more than the vehicle is worth.
- 25:26Jeff Dziekan: We all know that.
- 25:27Jeff Dziekan: Certain jobs hint that your beloved ride might be living on borrowed time.
- 25:32Jeff Dziekan: If you see these types of repairs, you might want to have something uh to consider.
- 25:35Jeff Dziekan: So here we go.
- 25:36Jeff Dziekan: One of them would be a blown head gasket.
- 25:38Jeff Dziekan: A blown head gasket is one of the most dreaded and expensive repairs a car can face.
- 25:43Jeff Dziekan: It can lead to overheating, poor engine performance, and even catastrophic engine damage if left until repairing it involves hours of labor and significant cost.
- 25:52Jeff Dziekan: So use that as a either a yay or nay on that.
- 25:55Jeff Dziekan: The next one, Mike, would be a transmission replacement.
- 25:59Jeff Dziekan: Now, who doesn't have a problem with a trans?
- 26:01Jeff Dziekan: So failure doesn't just ruin your day, it can wreck your budget.
- 26:05Jeff Dziekan: Symptoms like slipping gears, grinding, or total refusal to shift are early red flags.
- 26:10Jeff Dziekan: So if you got that, be aware of it.
- 26:12Jeff Dziekan: A full replacement or rebuild can run several thousand dollars depending on the type of vehicle you're driving.
- 26:17Jeff Dziekan: If you got a high-end vehicle, it's going to be more money.
- 26:19Jeff Dziekan: A little lower end, not so much.
- 26:21Jeff Dziekan: It might be time to say goodbye to that car.
- 26:24Jeff Dziekan: The next one that we have on the list would be a blown suspension or air ride systems.
- 26:29Jeff Dziekan: A luxurious floaty ride can have a steep cost when air suspension fails.
- 26:34Jeff Dziekan: Sagging corners and uneven stands, much like us here on the day I said uh or warning lights that often means systems that are on this last year.
- 26:42Jeff Dziekan: Sagging, I'm familiar with that.
- 26:43Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, and and uh thousands, especially for high-end makes of the vehicles, even standard strut or shock overhauls are not cheap.
- 26:54Jeff Dziekan: Next one, Michael.
- 26:55Jeff Dziekan: Cracked engine block.
- 26:56Jeff Dziekan: If you got this, this is very tragic.
- 26:58Jeff Dziekan: Uh the block is a death sentence for most vehicles.
- 27:01Jeff Dziekan: It often means your engine is overheated or suffered a major trauma, and fixing it requires either a complete rebuild or an engine replacement.
- 27:09Jeff Dziekan: Unless your car has significant value, this is the kind of repair that says thanks for the memory.
- 27:14Jeff Dziekan: So gotta move on from that one.
- 27:16Jeff Dziekan: Electrical system overhauls.
- 27:18Jeff Dziekan: When multiple electrical components start acting up in dashlights, power windows, instrument clusters, it can all point to a deeper wiring issue.
- 27:26Jeff Dziekan: They can be expensive on a time-wise in any shop.
- 27:30Jeff Dziekan: Diagnosing and fixing electrical gremlins is often labor-intensive, but with no guarantee that it's fixed.
- 27:36Jeff Dziekan: If glitches in multiple fasteners are faster than your mechanics answers, it might be a more cost-effective way to cut the ties of that vehicle and move on.
- 27:47Jeff Dziekan: Back to engine-related issues, warped or crack cylinder heads.
- 27:50Jeff Dziekan: A warped or crack cylinder head usually results from engine overheating, like we talked about earlier.
- 27:55Jeff Dziekan: Fixing it requires machine work, replacement gaskets, hours of labor.
- 27:59Jeff Dziekan: You may face lingering issues after that.
- 28:02Jeff Dziekan: If damage is severe, selling might be more practical, less painful of a decision.
- 28:07Jeff Dziekan: Heater core replacement, back to the related parts.
- 28:10Jeff Dziekan: Does your cabin smell like maple syrup or fog when you turn up the heat?
- 28:14Jeff Dziekan: Well, I don't know.
- 28:15Jeff Dziekan: Uh your heater core may be failing, but repair replacement is usually means removing the dashboard, a labor-intensive job.
- 28:22Jeff Dziekan: Combine the cost of the age of the vehicle, and it's often repair tips that tips the scale towards selling the vehicle.
- 28:28Jeff Dziekan: And the last one, a big one, timing chain or belt failure.
- 28:31Jeff Dziekan: When a timing chain belt chain or the belt fails, your engine internal harmony collapses.
- 28:37Jeff Dziekan: The repair involves removing large chunks of the engine.
- 28:41Jeff Dziekan: Uh which racks up labor costs very fast for interference.
- 28:45Jeff Dziekan: For interference.
- 28:50Jeff Dziekan: Making the fix even pricier.
- 28:53Jeff Dziekan: And we don't want to go pricier, so be aware.
- 28:57Jeff Dziekan: If the repair is more than the vehicle's worth, I'll get rid of the vehicle.
- 29:03Jeff Dziekan: Mike has to be a good thing.
- 29:04SPEAKER_06: One thing I wanted to ask you, because we kind of well, we're kind of running out of time.
- 29:07Jeff Dziekan: That's right.
- 29:08SPEAKER_06: What do you do with it?
- 29:09SPEAKER_06: If you decide I'm not going to repair it.
- 29:11Jeff Dziekan: That's up to you.
- 29:11Jeff Dziekan: If the car's paid off, you can you you can sell it to a private owner, you can do a trade-in, or go over the paper of the drive it.
- 29:18Jeff Dziekan: No, you can't drive it, but there's uh places that can pick it up to donate the car.
- 29:23Jeff Dziekan: We did that with Kathy's uh vehicle.
- 29:25Jeff Dziekan: Uh didn't get a lot out of it, but it was it was a good feeling that you donated to can be repaired for right.
- 29:31Jeff Dziekan: Or you might give it uh give it away or or write it off in the taxes or have somebody have it as a project car.
- 29:38Don Armstrong: Running behind, thank you for joining us today here on the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show.
- 29:42Don Armstrong: We're gonna have our next segment coming up right after this quick break.
