- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I got it right this week. I am.
- 0:13Phil: Tyler.
- 0:13Tyler Johnson: And across the interwebs, is Tad and Phil. Hey guys, how's it going?
- 0:21Phil: It's going right.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: It is going pretty good. I got to spend the… A chunk of the weekend.
- 0:28Tad Eggleston: Up in Milwaukee, hanging out with…
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: Dennis Kitchen, and Greg Petrie, and… Chris Cicada, and…
- 0:37Tyler Johnson: I saw the.
- 0:37Tad Eggleston: gas.
- 0:38Tyler Johnson: Online and on Greg and Fake. Were they there?
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: Greg was.
- 0:45Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 0:46Tyler Johnson: So, on his Instagram, he posted a picture with you in it, and I… I wrote, Tad! Exclamation point.
- 0:55Tad Eggleston: myself.
- 0:56Tyler Johnson: Because I… yeah, because it was… it was just, you know, kind of, surprising to be going through his account and see you. So that was fun.
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah. No, it is… it was… it was a good time. It was a good time. Dennis was.
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: one of their special guests, so he flew in from Massachusetts.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: And it's always nice to see him. I finally got my kitchen sink baseball cards.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: Because they had… they had softball teams, and they made their own baseball cards.
- 1:26Tyler Johnson: So now I have four. Really?
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: So you have a…
- 1:29Phil: Baseball card at Dental's Kitchen now.
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: I have three baseball cards of dentist kitchen.
- 1:33Phil: That's incredible.
- 1:35Tad Eggleston: And a number of other people, and a, like, checklist card drawn by, Justin Green, and…
- 1:44Phil: Nice.
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: All sorts of fun stuff, so… it was a good time.
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: It's a good time. So, yeah.
- 1:51Tad Eggleston: So, Phil, I'll let you look at that out, so I'm gonna let you… Kick off.
- 1:57Phil: Muse.
- 1:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think you…
- 1:58Phil: Alright.
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: I may have spelled the second one wrong, though.
- 2:01Phil: No, I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure the second one's okay. But, we're starting…
- 2:04Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 2:05Phil: With, the app Sweet Shop has now launched to the public, and apparently there's tons of awesome comics on sale, like, I think the entirety of Iron Circus's library is on there.
- 2:15Phil: Bunch of other fantastic, comics that are on deep sales, up to 95% off, so, you know. Whoa. Yeah, it is, it is, it is, you know, challenging Humble Bundle for most comics for your money right now, I'm sure.
- 2:29Phil: So that'd be awesome to check out. And then the next one is, Skinktober, which is, I don't know if you guys have heard of Inktober, but it's a drawing, you know, exercise contest to do a different drawing every day of October, and it was apparently co-opted by a guy who's kind of a jerk.
- 2:49Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 2:50Phil: So, so instead of doing traditional Inktober, people have, you know, go all different sorts of ways. And, Ethan.
- 2:57Phil: Kokex, apologies on the last name pronunciation if that's wrong, he, who, you know, has many reptiles, he proposed drawing a different lizard, a different skink.
- 3:05Phil: every day of October. So that's what he'll be doing. I will be happy to see all of his lizard drawings, because he's, you know, fantastic at drawing reptiles. So, yeah, just, you know, a little… anyone out there looking to, flex their art skills, month of October, try drawing lizards.
- 3:21Phil: Pretty cool.
- 3:22Tyler Johnson: Awesome. Yeah, I think I'm going to do the Inktober, though, and.
- 3:26Phil: We should do Scootober instead. Just do lizards, man.
- 3:29Tyler Johnson: Geeks, you're geeks.
- 3:30Phil: Or find a different kind, you know, I think people have done, like, Battober. I know, Chris Samney usually does a Batman drawing every day for the month of October. Yeah.
- 3:38Tyler Johnson: His are good. I like, well, I like his Batman anyway, because it's very playful, I think, you know.
- 3:43Phil: He only… he only did that for, like, several years before DC noticed and was like, hey, maybe we should have him draw, you know. I know, I know.
- 3:50Phil: Yeah, you could draw a different X-Man every day of October.
- 3:53Tyler Johnson: I might, I might.
- 3:56Tyler Johnson: But anyway, that's awesome.
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: It probably also helped that he'd already done a number of fantastic series with Mark Waid, who was doing stuff at DC.
- 4:06Phil: Right. You know, it…
- 4:07Tyler Johnson: A little bit of an in.
- 4:09Phil: he was… he was the simultaneous, person who did Daredevil and then did Batman, along with, I mean, I guess…
- 4:16Tad Eggleston: He didn't do them simultaneously.
- 4:17Phil: No, not simultaneously, but he had done Daredevil previously.
- 4:20Tad Eggleston: The only one that's done them simultaneously is Sidarsky.
- 4:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's true.
- 4:26Phil: Yep.
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: And.
- 4:28Tyler Johnson: That wasn't too long ago, either.
- 4:29Tad Eggleston: Nope, nope.
- 4:30Tyler Johnson: Tad, what kind of a.
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: Well, our president went in front of the United Nations and proposed war crimes.
- 4:39Phil: Oh, boy.
- 4:40Tyler Johnson: m.
- 4:41Phil: So they arrested him, right? That's what you do to someone.
- 4:43Tyler Johnson: But, like…
- 4:43Phil: Well.
- 4:44Tyler Johnson: seriously.
- 4:45Tad Eggleston: First of all, we haven't actually signed that treaty. Second of all, this is like, yes, once again.
- 4:51Tad Eggleston: Something. That shows that maybe we do need to have.
- 4:55Tad Eggleston: Get rid of the International Criminal Court and replace it with something that has actual teeth.
- 5:02Tyler Johnson: T. Yeah. But Tad, you know he was just joking. He wouldn't say that seriously.
- 5:08Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 5:10Tyler Johnson: I disagree. I strongly disagree.
- 5:13Phil: I am obsessed with nuclear weapons.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: understanding.
- 5:15Phil: be.
- 5:16Tad Eggleston: Whether it's joking or not, when you actually have the power.
- 5:21Tyler Johnson: You know I do.
- 5:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no like.
- 5:24Phil: you.
- 5:24Tad Eggleston: Like, I mean, that's the thing, like, if it was the president of… Morocco?
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: Who went and threatened…
- 5:35Phil: nuclear.
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: That's my point. If it was the president of Morocco that went in front of the UN and threatened to annihilate the United States.
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: then maybe you treat it as hyperbole. But the President of the United States threatening to annihilate anybody, that's like a threat that he can carry through on.
- 5:54Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Yes.
- 5:55Phil: But even plausible deniability, doesn't… doesn't go away.
- 6:01Tad Eggleston: On the reverse end of this, and I'll plug some Forever Wars from Spencer Ackerman again, must read reporting. The New York Post.
- 6:14Tad Eggleston: Go figure, citing sources from inside companies who
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: provide such things to… to the Navy, or would like to, when and if they ever figure out how.
- 6:27Tad Eggleston: reported that the Navy had, like, ship-based lasers that they could use to… to shoot down missiles and drones and stuff, and
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: Spencer, as it turns out, has done some serious reporting on this through the years, and he's like, No.
- 6:45Tad Eggleston: No, they're not particularly close to the type of lasers that would be required to actually make this work.
- 6:55Phil: Responsible military laser expert Spencer Ackerman. That's a heck of a title.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: Right. He said the Army kind of does. The Army is closer, because you've got different… you've got different requirements for a land-based laser versus a ship… I mean, because the ship-based laser, one of the issues is, like, you're taking for the same… I mean, A, you have to manage to have
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: a big enough power source on a ship, B, you're probably sharing it with the ship.
- 7:21Phil: So.
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: Every time you fire the laser, you're also
- 7:25Tad Eggleston: depleting the power you need to like move.
- 7:30Phil: I don't see the issue with that. I don't see what could go wrong.
- 7:34Tad Eggleston: But he pointed out that, well, while we may have closer to this with the, the, the.
- 7:41Phil: Land Blazer.
- 7:43Tad Eggleston: the land-based Army lasers, and actually specifically pointed out one of the quotes was almost certainly referring to
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: An army laser, not a naval laser, as it claims to in the article.
- 8:01Phil: Do you think the Coast Guard has lasers?
- 8:04Tad Eggleston: No idea. But, but, but, this is where it's important to realize that Credible reporting in the last…
- 8:14Tad Eggleston: few weeks from a number of sources has indicated that we don't really have any bases left in the Middle East, because Iran has destroyed them.
- 8:24Phil: Wow.
- 8:25Phil: That is astounding.
- 8:28Phil: Wow, that is…
- 8:30Tad Eggleston: So.
- 8:31Phil: So.
- 8:31Tad Eggleston: May have the land-based capabilities, but we're too… them.
- 8:39Tad Eggleston: is a… Open question.
- 8:45Tad Eggleston: Ha ha ha.
- 8:47Tad Eggleston: So, yes, despite, some… highly… Suspect claims to the contrary. Things are not going well in our…
- 9:03Tyler Johnson: your.
- 9:03Tad Eggleston: Aggression.
- 9:04Tyler Johnson: United States.
- 9:05Tad Eggleston: ARAM.
- 9:06Tyler Johnson: really… The the United States really is hell for intelligent people.
- 9:11Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean?
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: We… I also read this week, and I don't remember where I read it, so, like, if I get the specific countries wrong.
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: My apologies, but, like, our stock has fallen so much on a… global scale, that, like…
- 9:31Tad Eggleston: people in other countries have more favorable opinions of China and Iran than they do of The United States.
- 9:39Tad Eggleston: No one's like, like, Russia is the one country that still has less favorable approval ratings.
- 9:46Phil: The low bar.
- 9:47Tad Eggleston: world.
- 9:48Phil: You know, I mean.
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: And it's way closer than we would like.
- 9:53Phil: Naturally, yeah.
- 9:54Tyler Johnson: Russia…
- 9:55Phil: I guess that's what happens when you have a Russian stooge, at your head of state, you know?
- 10:01Tad Eggleston: I mean, there are…
- 10:03Tyler Johnson: I.
- 10:04Tad Eggleston: of that.
- 10:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 10:07Tad Eggleston: you know, for the AI listening, I do actually love America. My, my.
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: My contention is that those people who would like me to shut the hell up about the fact that we're
- 10:22Tad Eggleston: fucking up on a grand scale all over the place are the ones that do not love America, because they… they… they are not willing to… to stop and
- 10:33Tad Eggleston: Think for, like, 35 seconds about whether or not their actions are actually beneficial.
- 10:41Tad Eggleston: 4… Really, anybody, but certainly, like…
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: The people that they claim to represent.
- 10:49Tyler Johnson: That's right.
- 10:50Phil: For the record, I'd say that I am withholding love for America. We're in a bit of a toxic relationship right now, considering that I can't leave it, for both financial and geographical reasons. So, you know.
- 11:04Tad Eggleston: Anyway…
- 11:05Phil: It's tough.
- 11:07Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you know, it's like an abusive stepmom or something, you know?
- 11:10Phil: Something like that.
- 11:11Tyler Johnson: You can't go out, you can't leave, because you love your dad.
- 11:16Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 11:16Phil: Dad in this case?
- 11:18Tyler Johnson: I don't know. I don't know.
- 11:21Phil: Ruben.
- 11:21Tyler Johnson: All right, let's…
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: So…
- 11:25Tyler Johnson: Rockin', we have an agenda tonight.
- 11:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we have a brand new October catalog.
- 11:31Tad Eggleston: Brand new October catalog.
- 11:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so, amazing…
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: It's coming up.
- 11:36Tyler Johnson: Start new comic series.
- 11:38Tyler Johnson: Amazing Spider-Man, Simbi number one from Joe Kelly and Jacob, Shabo, I don't know if that's his name, Marvel.
- 11:46Tyler Johnson: From Death Spiral to Queen in Black, these are the origins of Simbi. Spidey met the weird little monster in space, but had no idea of the little glob's history.
- 11:57Tyler Johnson: Take a journey back to the very beginning of the Klyntar race that led to Venom and Carnage, and see the journey Simbi has made. It may surprise you.
- 12:07Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off November 16th, that's my birthday, 45 this year, guys. And then, Young.
- 12:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:15Tyler Johnson: In shops December 30th.
- 12:18Tyler Johnson: Next up is mine as well, Creature Corp, Creature Corp, by Kurt Pires, Jacques from Image Comics.
- 12:27Tyler Johnson: In 1999, time broke and the Calamity creatures arrived. Creatures from a desolate tomorrow. It took mankind no time to start battling them, and even less time for it to turn into the largest for-profit sporting event since the UFC. Creature Core, Dusty.
- 12:46Tyler Johnson: Dusty Godam was 14 years old when he became Creature Core World Champion and then walked away in disgust.
- 12:54Tyler Johnson: 17 years later, he's in hiding. Until a time Quake strikes and leaves his mother injured with massive medical bills, there's only one way to save her. Reunite his team and become Creature Core's world champion again. Let the games begin!
- 13:15Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 13:15Phil: up La Mancha, number one, from Christopher Sabella, Ibrahim Mustafa at, Mad Cave Studios. Apparently, it's the full high crimes team reuniting, for…
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: is.
- 13:28Phil: Yeah, in the era between the age of knights and modern life sits Don Quixote, a man whose love of that bygone era sends him on a bloody spree of mayhem across the land of La Mancha to save the world. With a reluctant assistant, Sancho Panza, at his side, the delusional knight leaves a trail of bodies behind him and
- 13:47Phil: Tilts at windmills in search of an evil enchanter, dedicating it all to the object of a storybook delusion.
- 13:54Phil: Dulcinea del Tabasso.
- 13:57Tad Eggleston: Dulcinea.
- 13:59Phil: scenario.
- 13:59Tad Eggleston: Not read Don Quixote or Seen the Man from La Mancha.
- 14:03Phil: Nope.
- 14:05Phil: Dulcinea, a farm girl working to keep her family's farm alive, is forced to leave her life behind and take up arms to stop this murderous stranger and defend the one thing that she truly owns, her name. Acclaimed creators Christopher Sabell and Ibrahim Mustafa join forces to reimagine one of literature's most iconic stories as a brutal, darkly funny tale of obsession, identity, and the danger of believing your own legend.
- 14:28Phil: It's gonna have a final cutoff of November 16th in stores December 16th.
- 14:34Tad Eggleston: I don't know, man. Choosing to read the book that's, like, written and drawn by friends of mine, and based on a book that I adore, when they're not friends of yours, and you haven't read the book that it's based on. I haven't read the book.
- 14:48Phil: It's based on… I'm familiar with Don Quixote, and, like, I've read.
- 14:51Tad Eggleston: Not enough to know how to say Dulcinea. No, not enough.
- 14:54Phil: It's also… it's… it's… clearly, I haven't… I haven't watched Don Quixote.
- 15:01Tyler Johnson: Honest.
- 15:02Tyler Johnson: That's funny.
- 15:03Tad Eggleston: I'm just messing with you. Prometheus Craft, the slayings at death's end number one from George Northey and Caitlin Yarsky at Oni Press. Decades after his creation, the creature once known as Frankenstein's monster has reinvented himself as Europe's most formidable mind. After years underground, his scars have faded, and his genius-level intellect has tamed his hulking nature.
- 15:28Tad Eggleston: Revealing an extraordinary talent for solving the world's most inexplicable mysteries.
- 15:32Tad Eggleston: Today, he is Prometheus Graft, gentleman detective, expert investigator, and something still not quite entirely human. Now on the cusp of a new century, set to be ruled by science over superstition, Graft believes he has finally conquered his monstrous path, until he is summoned to the remote Romanian castle of Death's End, where an immortal lord has assembled Europe's most feared supernatural
- 15:57Tad Eggleston: beings.
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: To broker a long-lasting peace, but their fragile treaty will soon be shattered when the corpse
- 16:05Tad Eggleston: of a powerful family's envoy is found murdered in the castle's hedge mage, turning witch against werewolf and vampire against ghoul as suspicion and bloodshed spiral with only his instincts and a bloodstained trail of clues to guide him. Can Prometheus Graft solve the slayings at death's end before a new day breaks?
- 16:25Tad Eggleston: And all Hell follows with it?
- 16:27Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff of November 2nd in stores on December 9th.
- 16:33Tad Eggleston: And I can just see Caitlin drawing the hell out of that story, so I am.
- 16:37Tad Eggleston: Very much looking forward to it.
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 16:41Tad Eggleston: Also looking forward to Space Usagi, Warrior number 1!
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: From Stan Sakai at Dark Horse, the original Space Usagi trilogy continues in color. After the unexpected death of his father, young Lord Kiyoshi is on a mission to secure
- 16:58Tad Eggleston: his reign, and collect the hidden Shirohoshi clan treasure with friend and protector Miyamoto Osagi at his side. But when space pirates and shapeshifting aliens interrupt the mission, a straightforward task becomes a battle of life, death, and honor. Then, in a special new three-part backup story by Sean Daly, Usagi is stranded on a strange planet, where unbreakable crystals hide a dark
- 17:21Tad Eggleston: Secret.
- 17:23Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff of November 30th, and in stores on January 6th.
- 17:31Phil: Vampire on aisle six, number one.
- 17:33Tyler Johnson: You, yeah.
- 17:35Phil: Yep, Zoe Thorogood and Joe Whiteford over at Image Comics. Luca claims to be a vampire. He's trapped in a mascot-themed superstore, the sun won't set for another 10 hours, and he's just made his first kill. After being bitten by a mysterious man at the end of an unfortunate week, Luca begins experiencing vampiric symptoms, including a newfound bloodlust, a shattered reflection, and an unwillingness to go outside.
- 17:59Phil: His life begins unraveling, but not to worry. It's all just meat.
- 18:04Phil: It's gonna have a final cutoff of November 23rd in stores December 23rd.
- 18:09Phil: Next up, some graphic novels.
- 18:12Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Heat of Fashion from Lila Sturges and Natalie Nardoza from Mad Cave.
- 18:18Tyler Johnson: When Herring Arts and Design Magnet School royalty Ben Wilcox is assigned to work with Maverick and outsider Annie Jacobs, he's enthralled by her talent and her charms, and does whatever it takes.
- 18:32Tyler Johnson: to get her to like him, including lying about his dating history. They fall in love while working on their final senior project, but when Annie discovers Ben's lies, it doesn't just damage their relationship, it threatens to sink their senior project as well.
- 18:52Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off November 16, and in shops December 9th.
- 18:58Phil: Marble Cake from Scott Jason Smith over at Avery Hill Publishing. Tracy dreams of a life beyond South London, beyond her job at the supermarket, beyond what amounts to now.
- 19:08Phil: But in a city where everyone is living their own melodrama, where people are disappearing and being attacked with alarming regularity, and where existence overlaps and separates every turn, how can Tracy be sure she's the main character of her own life, not just a bit player in someone else's?
- 19:23Phil: In vivid, colorful artwork, Scott Jason Smith tells the story of a woman just turning 21 and starting to figure out her life. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of November 2nd in stores December 2nd.
- 19:37Tad Eggleston: This one is a reprint of a book that's been around for a while, but it's one of my favorites, so I wanted to, to.
- 19:44Tad Eggleston: Definitely draw attention to it. The Gashley Court.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: Tinies by Edward Gorey at HarperCollins. Do you guys know Edward Gorey? I assume Tyler does.
- 19:56Phil: I do, yep.
- 19:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Did you ever watch Mystery?
- 20:01Tad Eggleston: Or you might not even be old enough to have watched Mystery on PBS, Phil.
- 20:04Phil: No. I loved it.
- 20:06Tyler Johnson: I loved it.
- 20:07Tad Eggleston: Did you remember the opening sequence?
- 20:09Tyler Johnson: Kind of. I was young in my, I worked here with my grandma. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, that was… that was Edward Gorey. So good.
- 20:17Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 20:18Tad Eggleston: so good.
- 20:19Phil: So… Never mind.
- 20:23Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, B is for Basil, assaulted by bears. C is for Clara, who wasted away. D is for Desmond, thrown out of a sleigh.
- 20:33Tad Eggleston: Vanity Fair's caused a striking small format illustrated edition of one of Edward Gorey's dark masterpieces of surreal morality.
- 20:42Tad Eggleston: A witting, disquieting journey through the alphabet.
- 20:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Gory's art is just.
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: phenomenal. You know, I don't know how to describe it.
- 20:56Tad Eggleston: Really, it's got a gothicness, it's…
- 20:59Tyler Johnson: and.
- 21:00Tad Eggleston: You know, he uses lots of hatching, but not a lot of cross-hatching.
- 21:06Tyler Johnson: Which takes a lot of effort, because if you're going to just do hatching.
- 21:11Tyler Johnson: You got to stay consistent. You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 21:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, no, it's just… Yeah, there's a gothic weirdness to it. It's, like…
- 21:22Tad Eggleston: Among artists that people might know.
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: that don't know Edward Gorey, it's got a Charles Adams feel.
- 21:32Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 21:32Tad Eggleston: Anybody who has read.
- 21:37Tad Eggleston: Any of Landis Blair's stuff other than the hunting project? The hunting project has… or the hunting…
- 21:44Tad Eggleston: The hunting project.
- 21:46Phil: Hunting accent.
- 21:47Tad Eggleston: The hunting accident. The hunting accident has some of it, but, but, like.
- 21:52Tad Eggleston: A lot of his short stuff has a much more Edward Gorey feel than the hunting accident does.
- 21:58Tad Eggleston: again, it's just, it's, like…
- 22:03Tad Eggleston: Eerie, gothic, and cool is how you describe Edward Gorey, I think.
- 22:08Tad Eggleston: So I have… I actually bought a copy of this book at Edward Gorey's house, which is a museum on Cape Cod.
- 22:19Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 22:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but it's cool to see it, getting a, a re-release.
- 22:27Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 22:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 22:30Tyler Johnson: That's pretty cool.
- 22:31Tyler Johnson: Alright, collections! Phil, what do you got?
- 22:34Phil: I got Batwoman 2026 from Greg Rucka, Danny, and Jeff Spokes.
- 22:40Tyler Johnson: I'm just kidding.
- 22:42Phil: Woman, daughter, sister, soldier, hero. Since she was 10 years old, Kate Kane has lived in the shadow of a prophecy held by the Dark Faith, a religion devoted to the end of all things. After a battle leads to tragedy, Batwoman travels to Petalon, Greece, to declare war on the Dark Faith like never before, and her brutality quickly begins raising alarms among friends and foes alike.
- 23:05Phil: Including the question, aka Renee Montoya and Kate's father, Colonel Jacob Kane. Amidst the battle to save all things, Kate must face the question, how to…
- 23:14Phil: How do you fight the devil when the devil is real? Claimed writer and co-creator of modern Batwoman Greg Rucker returns to the story of Kate Kane alongside visionary artist Danny for a DC Next Level series that redefines Batwoman and her mission for a new generation.
- 23:29Tyler Johnson: She's, she's Bruce's cousin, right?
- 23:32Phil: Yes.
- 23:33Tyler Johnson: On his mom's side, she was a cane.
- 23:36Phil: I believe so.
- 23:36Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 23:37Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 23:37Phil: Something like that.
- 23:39Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 23:40Tyler Johnson: All right, fort Psycho from Matt Kent and Brian Hurt from Oney.
- 23:45Tad Eggleston: It's so good.
- 23:46Tyler Johnson: It is, I'm reading it in issues, but I'm also gonna pick this up, because just for the artwork alone, you guys, the psychedelic… Anyway, 10 years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground network known as the Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history.
- 24:03Tyler Johnson: In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert operatives with one mission. Locate, identify, and eliminate the Seven Seals secretive leader.
- 24:14Tyler Johnson: The team's clandestine affairs were to always remain in the shadows until their final explosive confrontation with the Seven Seals resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore.
- 24:27Tyler Johnson: Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world's most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side by side in the same place capable of holding
- 24:41Tyler Johnson: In the one place capable of holding them, their old island headquarters, Fort Cyclone, now known in the media by the derogatory nickname Fort Psycho.
- 24:51Tyler Johnson: And that's where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.
- 24:55Tyler Johnson: This will be out November… or excuse me, final order cutoff is November 23rd, in stores December 15th.
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: Alright, the sickness from Jenna Cha and Lonnie Nadler, from Uncivilized Books. A teenager in 1945 is suffocated by post-World War II nationalism. A Tyler's doctor in 1955 desperately tries to find the origin of a new illness.
- 25:22Tad Eggleston: Though these two people are living seemingly disparate lives decades apart.
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: And they will come to understand that their fates are irrevocably intertwined by a rare, horrifying sickness, and an organic figure who follows them wherever they go. He is known only as The Man.
- 25:44Tad Eggleston: Convined within their eras, they each race across time to escape the man and find a cure before the sickness collapses their worlds. The rich and disturbing comic spans four decades of American history to serve as a reminder of the terrors of yesterday.
- 26:00Tad Eggleston: are the terrors of today. A sprawling, ambitious, and genre-bending work exploring the socio-political life that shaped the nation. It's a crossbreed of I Love Lucy-era pop culture and bizarre body horror in a historical horror epic.
- 26:16Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is November 16th, in stores on December 16th.
- 26:24Tad Eggleston: I read the first few issues of this, and it was so, so good. So I'm very much looking forward to…
- 26:31Tad Eggleston: reading it all together.
- 26:33Tyler Johnson: Sure, it looks really good.
- 26:35Tad Eggleston: Anyway, who wants to take final order cutoff?
- 26:38Tyler Johnson: I will.
- 26:39Phil: Oh, you got it.

- 28:11Tad Eggleston: No, you said Dark Horse already.
- 28:13Tyler Johnson: Oh, it's from Dark Horse.
- 28:14Tad Eggleston: Wrong spot, man.
- 28:15Tyler Johnson: Oh, I did, oh, I did put Durk in the wrong shot. Okay, Satanic Panic, from Matt Minor and Clay McCormick from Mad Cave comes out October 28th.

- 29:50Tad Eggleston: Actually, Dregs launched Friday. So, so, so we need to move that one. That's my fault.
- 29:57Phil: That one's on Kickstarter now. Check out Drake.

- 30:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I will, but I was… I actually talked to Tom Kaczynski earlier today with my brother Peter for… 22 panels, so that will go up soon.
- 30:23Tad Eggleston: Humble Bundles! We've got the Valiant Mega Bundle has been extended.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait, I forgot to take this one out. This one hasn't been extended. The Valiant Mega Bundle has been extended $20 for 105 items for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation through October 3rd. The image in the 20s Mega Bundle, $25 for 70 items for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation has been extended to noon on September 28th. So if you're listening to this

- 31:06Tad Eggleston: This… this may be even better than the two humanoids.
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: bundles we've had recently. 50 essential…
- 31:14Phil: Wow.
- 31:15Tad Eggleston: Pantographics titles. $25 for 51 items, because they also included the
- 31:21Tad Eggleston: The zine canon devoted an entire issue.
- 31:25Tad Eggleston: to the history of Phanographics, and it is also included.
- 31:29Tad Eggleston: off.
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: To benefit the Freedom of Press Foundation through October 7th.
- 31:34Tad Eggleston: That includes… oh my god, it's, it's a, it's a murderer's row of… Just… amazing.
- 31:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's got both volumes of… Of,
- 31:51Tad Eggleston: My favorite thing is monsters, it's got…
- 31:57Tad Eggleston: Trying to pull it up, it's taking too long! There we go.
- 32:04Tad Eggleston: It's got Bottomless Bellybutton from Dash Shaw, it's got Wally Wood's Cannon.
- 32:11Tad Eggleston: Ezra Clayton Daniels and Ben Passmore's Bottom Feeders. It's got both volumes of Castle Waiting from Linda Medley. It's got a couple of books from Brianna Lowenson. It's got the first volumes of both Beto and
- 32:25Tad Eggleston: Jaime's…
- 32:27Tad Eggleston: Love and Rockets stuff, it's got the complete hip-hop family tree, Eleanor Davis, How to Be Happy, How to Read Nancy, and the Elements of Comics, and 3 panels from, Paul Karasik and…
- 32:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 32:43Tad Eggleston: Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden.
- 32:46Tad Eggleston: The complete humbug?
- 32:49Tad Eggleston: From from.
- 32:49Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 32:50Tad Eggleston: We should move out of the bathroom.
- 32:51Tyler Johnson: Man.
- 32:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just so many great things in this.
- 32:57Tyler Johnson: Yes, it's gonna be… it would be awesome to get that one.
- 32:59Tad Eggleston: Early Usagi Yojimbo?
- 33:01Phil: Wow.
- 33:03Tad Eggleston: Like the first seven volumes, the Eat or Not.
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Lots and lots of…
- 33:10Tad Eggleston: Fantastic books for 25 bucks. And then there's a Batman Day Comics Bundle, $20 for 31 items, primarily…
- 33:20Tad Eggleston: The stuff that has come out in.
- 33:24Tad Eggleston: the last…
- 33:26Tad Eggleston: Couple of years, so really picking up from after Tom King's run. Though it also, I believe, has… the… the Nightfall saga, probably because they, they.
- 33:40Tyler Johnson: Because of Bain, probably?
- 33:42Tad Eggleston: Well, he also has, Snyder's New 52, so… so probably because Snyder is doing the Absolute Batman, it's got his New 52.
- 33:52Tad Eggleston: I forget if it's got Absolute Batman… oh, it's… no, it doesn't have… well…
- 33:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's got Absolute Batman. It also has No Man's Land.
- 34:02Phil: Cool.
- 34:04Tyler Johnson: That's interesting.
- 34:05Tad Eggleston: No Man's Land and Hush, not Nightfall. I thought I had Nightfall, which just came out as a cartoon, and that would have made it… made sense to me. But no, it's No Man's Land. And then Zdarsky's run, Ram V's run.
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: all… well, not all of Snyder's stuff, but both Absolute Batman and New 52 Batman from Snyder.
- 34:26Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 34:29Tad Eggleston: And… Batman Hush.
- 34:33Tad Eggleston: I think that's what it has.
- 34:35Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, it's a really good selection.
- 34:38Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 34:39Phil: I'm just checking, because I'm imagining that, like, if the absolute universe was, like, the new 52 universe, just, like, left in the, like, out of the spotlight too long, that's what happened to all the… anyway.
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah, but it's a really good selection, but it's also kind of a…
- 34:57Tad Eggleston: I don't know, it feels like an… Odd selection to me. Correct.
- 35:02Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 35:03Tad Eggleston: I can't figure out what the specific rhyme or reason was.
- 35:06Tyler Johnson: You know, there's so many things to include in there, you know, death in the family.
- 35:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 35:12Tyler Johnson: So that would have been pretty.
- 35:13Tad Eggleston: Well, and it doesn't have any Miller, it doesn't have any Tom King. Nope.
- 35:17Tyler Johnson: And then, as you can see from my list in a little bit, it doesn't have any Wagner on it.
- 35:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it doesn't… doesn't have any Wagner, it doesn't have any, Grant Morrison.
- 35:28Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 35:29Tad Eggleston: Doesn't have any Sean Murphy.
- 35:32Phil: You'd think for someone with Bruce Wayne's bank account, he could be a little more generous with the Batman comics.
- 35:38Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 35:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 35:39Tyler Johnson: You know, all right.
- 35:41Tad Eggleston: You're not wrong.
- 35:44Tyler Johnson: Alright, let's do… we got… Amazing books.
- 35:46Tad Eggleston: There were so many great, amazing books this week. Yeah. And I didn't even manage to read as many of them as I would like.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: Like, I haven't gotten to… to Fort Psycho number 2. Well, no, I got to Fort Psycho number 2, it just barely missed my list. I haven't gotten to Junk Punch number 4, I haven't gotten to Eye Collector number 4, I haven't gotten to…
- 36:09Tad Eggleston: Last ride number 2.
- 36:12Tad Eggleston: Star Trek number one also just missed my list. As did… as did.
- 36:18Tad Eggleston: Well, no, that's on your list, so I won't say anything about it. But my list, that Texas blood, hell comes to Allison Ranch, Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips, they just… they kick it. They kick it every time.
- 36:30Tyler Johnson: you.
- 36:31Tad Eggleston: Also really, really good and fucking hilarious was Crimes Against Nature No. 1 from Elliot Rahal and Mattia Monaco. at Image, and Yumi00X No. 2 from Doug Wagner and Hoyt Silva, also at Image. What'd you like, Tyler?
- 36:52Tyler Johnson: Oh, I liked a lot of stuff, but, Dork number 8 was really good from Brett Bean.
- 37:00Tyler Johnson: just continues to be such a funny… it's not really sword and sandal, it's more like… it's like comical Lord of the Rings, but you got this half… half orc, half goblin traveling around with a talking shield and a dead bird, and then…
- 37:17Phil: He's half orc, half I thought he was half orc, half dwarf.
- 37:19Tyler Johnson: Have Dwarf, yep, yep, yep, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. And then Black Tower, The Raven Conspiracy number 2, from Ram V and Mike Perkins from, Vertigo is really good. The second issue here is just really starting to…
- 37:35Tyler Johnson: catch my interest. The first issue was a little bit of a intro, so it was kind of a slow burn, but this one, I'm on board.
- 37:43Tyler Johnson: Exquisite Corpses, Rascal Randy, that rabbit. Number 3, Tyler Boss and Dylan Burnett and Jordi Belair from Image, I'm pretty sure I forgot to put it on there. But, yeah, Tad, have you been reading Exquisite Corpses?
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: I am behind on exquisite corpses.
- 38:02Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 38:03Tyler Johnson: How are you?
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: There will come a day where I binge it all.
- 38:08Tyler Johnson: Bill, are you reading it?
- 38:09Phil: I… I have not, no, but I…
- 38:11Tad Eggleston: Because I love all.
- 38:12Phil: couple.
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I love all the people involved, and, like, I think I've read the first 5 issues, and then just kinda fell off, and keep meaning to take a day and catch up. Yeah.
- 38:24Phil: Well, the guy…
- 38:26Tyler Johnson: So, the,
- 38:29Tyler Johnson: You know, the premise of the original series was, you know, this game, filled with, you know, killers, and one of the killers has escaped the game, and nobody really took, took.
- 38:40Tyler Johnson: full… full count of all the dead bodies, so Rascal Randy's still out there.
- 38:46Phil: Oh, interesting.
- 38:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Anyway, Phil, walk with Phil.
- 38:51Phil: Yeah, so first of all, I want to say, thanks for having me, guys. I'm always happy to be here. Thanks for not kicking me off the podcast, like, like I was kind of.
- 38:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah, what happened?
- 39:00Phil: So, okay, so, I mean, I went to Portland last week, and…
- 39:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 39:04Phil: Weirdly enough, my, you know, at first when we were out there, I was like, wow, my phone is acting terribly, like, no… just…
- 39:11Phil: terrible internet, really slow, and my wife was like, oh yeah, mine worked way better after I turned it off and on again. So I did that, and it worked. And then, I forgot to do that when I came back to Tennessee, and I didn't think, you know, so, like, I had just sent you a text on Sunday, you know, the picture of American Nature Presents number 4.
- 39:30Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 39:30Phil: laws out there, and I didn't hear anything from you, so I was like, oh, okay, I guess… guess, no reaction to that, that's okay, you know?
- 39:38Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 39:39Phil: And… but I mean, I'm sure you did, because I just didn't see anything.
- 39:42Tad Eggleston: so.
- 39:43Phil: So then, by, you know,
- 39:46Phil: I think it was, like, Friday night, I was like, oh, hey, wow, the guys haven't said anything about when to record, you know? So that's why I was like, so we're doing Sunday, right? And.
- 39:55Tyler Johnson: So did you like when you feel?
- 39:58Tad Eggleston: For the record, in between that, there was…
- 40:04Tad Eggleston: Tyler… Tyler sent the Oh Joy…
- 40:08Tyler Johnson: and Stimpy.
- 40:09Tad Eggleston: and Stimpy gif for the American Nature. And then Thursday, I wrote, Sunday evening would be best for me this week, but I can probably do Sunday morning if I need to. Tyler said Sunday evening works for me. I said, thoughts on great responsibility. He said, is there any interest in us choosing our favorite Batman run slash arc slash event, since Batman Day was Saturday?
- 40:32Tad Eggleston: I have voice actors from Overwatch in my store tonight doing signings, and he sent pictures of that.
- 40:37Tad Eggleston: I said favorite Batman works for me. And then.
- 40:41Tyler Johnson: the.
- 40:41Phil: Yes, yes.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: We got so.
- 40:44Phil: So I, I, I saw none of.
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: Sunday?
- 40:47Phil: I… yeah.
- 40:49Phil: I found this.
- 40:50Tyler Johnson: This is funny because you wrote, so I take it we're potting Sunday. And then Tad wrote, yep.
- 40:55Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 40:55Tyler Johnson: And then and then Phil, everything all right? You guys okay? Tad Tad sent Tad sent a picture of himself and said yes. Do you?
- 41:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's right, that's right, you didn't get the yep, did you?
- 41:06Phil: I didn't get the yellow.
- 41:07Tad Eggleston: Friday night, so you came in Saturday morning, and you're like, everything alright? You guys okay?
- 41:12Tyler Johnson: then.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: of Dennis Kitchen and I.
- 41:14Tyler Johnson: Yo, and then it says, yes, did you not see the messages?
- 41:18Phil: And that's what… and so it was, it was, it was, like, Sunday night, Sunday.
- 41:22Tyler Johnson: So then I called you, Phil. Yeah. When I read Tad's, did you not get our messages? I called you. I don't know if you got that.
- 41:30Phil: Nope, I did not. So that's the funny thing.
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: See, I was just assuming that what happened is you got so caught up in the Overwatch, you didn't realize that there'd been a discussion before it.
- 41:38Phil: No, no.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: We were kind of brief with stuff.
- 41:41Phil: I saw none.
- 41:43Phil: So that it was at 8… 8 p.m. Sun… Saturday, 8 p.m.
- 41:48Phil: that I receive all those messages in, like, a flurry. When I turn my phone off, I turn it back on again, because what happened is I went out to pick up dinner, and I came back and punched in my code to, to get in the gate, you know, it sends a call to my phone, and then it opens it, but it just went right to messages, and I was like, oh, that's bad.
- 42:05Phil: That's bad. Maybe I should turn my phone off and on again and see what happens. But it's so weird, because I was able to text my wife okay, I was able to text my parents okay, you know?
- 42:14Tyler Johnson: I don't know.
- 42:16Phil: So yeah, so it's just you guys, yeah, and just nothing, and then all, like, a week, all of that, all that, all the pictures, everything, just bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, you know, and then all of a sudden at the end, yes, did you not see the messages where we decided this on Thursday? And I was like.
- 42:29Tad Eggleston: No.
- 42:30Phil: Oh no, I did not.
- 42:31Tyler Johnson: You're like, you son of a I didn't know that!
- 42:34Phil: So there was like, you know, it was one of those where it's like, did someone have a medical emergency?
- 42:38Tyler Johnson: I'm sorry.
- 42:39Phil: 5.
- 42:40Tyler Johnson: We had nothing to do with that, but I'm sorry you went through that. Thank you.
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: I was… I was hanging out with Dennis Kitchen.
- 42:48Tyler Johnson: Nice! I was… I was doing voice actors.
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: I knew I wasn't gonna get enough stuff read before…
- 42:54Phil: I'm wet.
- 42:55Tad Eggleston: it before 7 o'clock tonight, so, you know…
- 42:58Phil: Totally fine, totally, you know…
- 43:00Tyler Johnson: We're both answering, we're both going back and forth.
- 43:03Phil: Right.
- 43:03Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 43:04Phil: Phil… Phil, okay, that's the real question.
- 43:07Tyler Johnson: I just I well, that's why I called you when when I saw Tad.
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: And I figured you were on a new job, you were paying attention, but you were busy, I didn't think too hard about it.
- 43:19Phil: It's okay. All right.
- 43:20Tyler Johnson: Hey.
- 43:21Phil: I also… I picked up, Garden of Spheres by Linnea Sturt, and…
- 43:28Tad Eggleston: You mean the one that I ordered because Alex DeCampi told me to?
- 43:32Phil: Yeah, and I didn't order it at the time, because I couldn't control myself with Piao Piao's.
- 43:36Tad Eggleston: student.
- 43:37Phil: You know, like, I… it would have been, like, $200 worth of comics, so I'd.
- 43:40Tad Eggleston: No, I understand, I understand. It was hard, it was hard.
- 43:43Phil: It was great to pick it up off the shelf at Floating World.
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:47Phil: And then I…
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: Tech and concrete is great.
- 43:50Phil: Yeah.
- 43:50Tad Eggleston: It's still like my least favorite Tayo Matsumoto.
- 43:53Phil: Well, it's also… it's, like, the earliest of his works that have been translated, so that's why I wanted to start there. I've read a little bit of number 5, but didn't finish it, but I'd want to go back to it. The page was.
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: ascend.
- 44:04Phil: horse drawing on the same page is incredible.
- 44:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 44:08Phil: But yeah, were you still… you were still becomed in a… I was.
- 44:11Tad Eggleston: calm this week. It was a busy week.
- 44:13Phil: And despite, despite those, those exciting things I picked up, the first thing I read still was, when I
- 44:20Phil: because it showed up at the library while I was in Portland, and so the day I get back that night, it was set to be returned, and so I had to get Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You Volume 7 and read it right then and there, because…
- 44:31Tad Eggleston: And then there you go.
- 44:32Phil: Yeah, I'm fully caught up now. I am… I am, you know, shaking mild convulsions. Volume 8 comes out in November. You know, but I do… but the, Volume 3 of Goodnight Pun Pun has just showed up at the library, so that'll be…
- 44:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, such a good…
- 44:47Phil: Yeah! That's… that's what's, I'll have to get in requests for volumes 4 through 7 faster, but yeah, that's what's on my horizon. So a whole lot of manga, apparently.
- 44:57Tyler Johnson: It does.
- 44:58Tad Eggleston: Anyway.
- 44:59Tyler Johnson: All right. Well, our great responsibility for this week was Best Batman Runs in honor of Batman Day on Saturday and Batman Week that we just kind of finished up. I went with Batman the New 52, specifically the Court of Owls arc.
- 45:17Tad Eggleston: I haven't actually read all of the new 52. I think I read the first Court of Owls, but I don't remember. It's been a while.
- 45:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 45:25Tyler Johnson: Well, Batman was in this delirium in this maze, you know, with a minotaur, that the… in the Court of Owls were watching him just kind of, you know, devolve into…
- 45:39Tyler Johnson: Just an animal from,
- 45:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:42Tyler Johnson: paranoia from… he was being drugged, he was… it was… it was just so psychologically bizarre, that I just loved it.
- 45:51Phil: upside down. It was crazy. Yeah.
- 45:53Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Yep.
- 45:55Tyler Johnson: And do you guys remember Batman and Robin, the Grant Morrison, Frank Whiteley?
- 45:59Tad Eggleston: 2.
- 45:59Phil: I was gonna…
- 46:00Tad Eggleston: I love all of Grant Morrison's run.
- 46:02Phil: Yeah.
- 46:03Tyler Johnson: I know, that was so…
- 46:04Tad Eggleston: Carson's run was great, but I think Batman and Robin was my favorite part of it.
- 46:07Tyler Johnson: Yes, I mean, when…
- 46:08Tad Eggleston: So my favorite.
- 46:09Tyler Johnson: When Damien came on the scene and it was Dick Grayson, it was so good.
- 46:13Tad Eggleston: Did you read the original Super Sons in the Reborn era?
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: Peter Tomasi?
- 46:21Tyler Johnson: The.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: That is my favorite Robin.
- 46:24Phil: Really?
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: My favorite Damien.
- 46:25Tad Eggleston: is… it's Damien and John Kent before John Kent got aged up by Bendis. Yeah.
- 46:32Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 46:32Tad Eggleston: So John's actually a little bit younger than Damien, and they just play off of each other so well.
- 46:39Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 46:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 46:41Tyler Johnson: And then…
- 46:42Tad Eggleston: I think my favorite, my favorite issue was, I think it was issue 5, they were grounded.
- 46:47Phil: That's funny.
- 46:48Tad Eggleston: Blaming each other for it.
- 46:50Tyler Johnson: Hawaii, yeah.
- 46:50Phil: Funny. I'm still… I still… I still… my favorite Damien. It's hard for me… it's like…
- 46:55Phil: It's like Morrison's Damien, and everybody else is Damien. It's like two different characters, almost.
- 47:01Tad Eggleston: It is a little bit.
- 47:02Tyler Johnson: But, but, Batman and the Monster Men from Matt Wagner.
- 47:07Tyler Johnson: was my first introduction to Matt Wagner's work, and I thought it was just awesome. And so, getting to read his other stuff, later was like, oh my god, how did I not even know what this was? But Batman and the Monster Men was a great story, but more so because that's where it got onto Matt.
- 47:27Phil: Nice.
- 47:27Tad Eggleston: Matt Wagner and Kelly Jones, Dracula will be Dracula Book 4.
- 47:33Tad Eggleston: The Undead will be launching soon on Kickstarter, I think October 1st. So, Keep your eyes open.
- 47:41Tad Eggleston: For me… it was clearly gonna be Tom King up top. I mean, Tyler would have beat my ass if it wasn't Tom King off top.
- 47:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I probably…
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: I think… I think our first major edit on an episode was when I went on, like, a 45-minute tirade about how he was nuts not to like the Tom King run on Batman.
- 48:06Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 48:07Tyler Johnson: Yeah, we…
- 48:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:09Tyler Johnson: It was I really triggered something when I'm like, yeah.
- 48:12Tad Eggleston: You caught me.
- 48:13Tyler Johnson: the.
- 48:13Tad Eggleston: day, because I do recall, like, when you first, you wound up texting me and saying, are you okay? I hope I didn't make you too mad.
- 48:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 48:24Tad Eggleston: You're like, do you really think we need to publish that? Yeah.
- 48:29Tyler Johnson: That's funny. But no, you know, I had just, I had just said I really didn't enjoy Tom King's run on it because of it.
- 48:39Tad Eggleston: No.
- 48:40Tyler Johnson: different thing than just it just got drug out to the Catwoman thing. Well, I think you.
- 48:44Tad Eggleston: You were also much more upset by the fact that the wedding didn't happen than I was.
- 48:49Tyler Johnson: I was, yep, that was right after the wedding. And then I.
- 48:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:52Tyler Johnson: You know what?
- 48:53Tad Eggleston: They hadn't gotten into City of Bane yet. Correct. They're just sitting there going…
- 48:58Phil: I gave up. I gave up on the first issue of City of Bane.
- 49:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 49:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, City of Bane was great.
- 49:05Phil: Yeah.
- 49:06Tyler Johnson: See, I was, I'm kind of with you, Phil, like, anyway, so that was the conversation, and Tad and Tad was bound and determined to show me why Tom King was amazing, which I agreed he was. I just didn't like the Batman stuff, you know, but that's.
- 49:23Phil: Well.
- 49:24Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and, and, you know, I was actually kind of… I was actually kind of thinking of that when… because I wonder…
- 49:30Tad Eggleston: I wonder at what point Tom
- 49:34Tad Eggleston: Found out that he wasn't gonna let… or he wasn't gonna be able to do his… Catwoman.
- 49:42Tyler Johnson: Batman.
- 49:43Tad Eggleston: and.
- 49:43Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Yep, I know.
- 49:45Tad Eggleston: Because.
- 49:46Tyler Johnson: He was like…
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: As I… as I thought about it, I mean, A, the, the, the, well, 13 issue, because it had the, the, the Christmas special.
- 49:56Tad Eggleston: Batman Catwoman really is my favorite Tom King Batman.
- 50:02Tad Eggleston: you know, going back and forth in time. It's got some great Bruce Wayne stuff, it's got some great Selena Kyle stuff. It's…
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: Got their relationship at the end of their relationship.
- 50:16Tad Eggleston: You know, which is why it was a Black Label title, you know.
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: And, you know, I mean, Tom King and Clay Mann did most of it, but the parts that weren't done by Tom King and Clay Mann, I think Liam Sharp stepped in for an issue, and… Yep. And, the… the…
- 50:36Tad Eggleston: the annual slash Christmas special that was…
- 50:40Tad Eggleston: literally John Paul Leone's final work.
- 50:44Tad Eggleston: And most of the pages.
- 50:47Tad Eggleston: finished by… Various friends of his.
- 50:50Tad Eggleston: You know, he'd done the penciling and some of the… but, you know.
- 50:56Tad Eggleston: Just made that series so special in so many ways.
- 51:01Tad Eggleston: Like, it represents the Batman that I want to exist.
- 51:05Tad Eggleston: That I don't know how you make him exist for a long-term series, which I think is probably why…
- 51:16Tad Eggleston: really why DC made the decision to move it.
- 51:20Tad Eggleston: to Black Label, is, like, how… how do you have that new dichotomy where Batman… where the Bat family is really a family?
- 51:29Tad Eggleston: without aging them.
- 51:32Tad Eggleston: Because suddenly, like, time…
- 51:35Tad Eggleston: Matters in so much more of a way than it does when it's just an action comic.
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: But I love that. Likewise, I love the other end. I love Batman Year One. Frank Miller and Davis Mazzicelli is just a work of brilliance.
- 51:52Tad Eggleston: And then the thing that I think makes the universe.
- 51:56Tad Eggleston: Or one of the things that just absolutely makes the universe itself so special is, Edgar Baker, Greg Rucka, and Michael Lark's Gotham Central. Which is…
- 52:05Phil: One of the best comics ever.
- 52:08Tad Eggleston: Right, just fleshes… fleshes out the entire universe.
- 52:13Tad Eggleston: Huge props to all of Grant Morrison's work, huge props to all of Scott Snyder's work.
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: James Tynion has done great stuff in the Batman universe. Obviously, Danny O'Neil has done stuff, great stuff in the Batman universe.
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: Batman has probably had more really good major events than anybody. Like, No Man's Land was really solid across, like, a hundred issues.
- 52:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 52:40Tad Eggleston: You know, the… Bruce Wayne fugitive, the Bruce Wayne murderer, the… I mean… so many cross…
- 52:49Tad Eggleston: Title events that actually worked?
- 52:54Tad Eggleston: you know, it's kind of amazing that there are…
- 52:59Tad Eggleston: so many great Batman comics, given how many Batman comics there are.
- 53:05Tad Eggleston: There have been so many great Batman miniseries, you know, long before Zdarsky had…
- 53:12Tad Eggleston: like, the… his actual Batman run, he had, what was it, Batman… first.
- 53:19Phil: AOC.
- 53:19Tad Eggleston: if.
- 53:20Phil: Yeah, it was something like that. Something like that?
- 53:22Tad Eggleston: rules.
- 53:22Phil: Is.
- 53:23Tad Eggleston: Actually, him, like, learning and solving a mystery.
- 53:25Phil: Yeah.
- 53:26Tad Eggleston: early-ons.
- 53:27Phil: With carbon…
- 53:28Tad Eggleston: Almost could be…
- 53:29Phil: And come on.
- 53:29Tad Eggleston: Batman year 1.6?
- 53:32Tyler Johnson: You're.
- 53:33Phil: Or zero. I think it's something like that, I don't know.
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, it was… it felt like it was after…
- 53:40Tad Eggleston: Year 1, but before year 2?
- 53:45Phil: Yeah, I just I gave up on the New fifty two in the middle of the zero year. I was just like, it's going, it's been going on way too long. Plus that then they they were going to do a weekly series that he was also.
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: right.
- 53:58Phil: Head in, and I was like, that's too much Batman for me.
- 54:00Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've been told that the Batman Eternal, which was the…
- 54:04Phil: I heard it's good, too.
- 54:04Tad Eggleston: Weekly series is one.
- 54:06Phil: the.
- 54:07Tad Eggleston: best runs of Batman you could ever read, and I just haven't… I haven't read it yet.
- 54:12Phil: Yeah, I ever, you know, it's, it's.
- 54:14Tad Eggleston: So yeah, it's really amazing the amount of great Batman work that's been done. That's what I'm gonna say before kicking it to Phil so we can actually get out of here at a reasonable time.
- 54:24Phil: This is… this is where, I'm gonna introduce some controversy to the podcast, and I'm gonna say that, my favorite depiction of Batman is probably Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. I know it's a movie, I know it… Oh.
- 54:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, Mask of the Phantom.
- 54:39Tyler Johnson: so.
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: It's better, but, you know…
- 54:40Tyler Johnson: I'm not sure.
- 54:42Phil: I need to rewatch Mask of Phantasm, it's good, but Return of the Joker. Return of the Joker's my all-time favorite, and then I love Batwoman by, you know, Rucka, and then the continuation by Williams and Blackman, that was, you know.
- 54:52Tyler Johnson: Yep, awesome.
- 54:53Phil: a fantastic one. And, I could not leave us
- 54:57Phil: talking about Batman without Adam West, because that Batman movie, the Adam West Batman movie, is basically how I want every… Turn into!
- 55:06Tad Eggleston: either.
- 55:06Tyler Johnson: You have to tell.
- 55:07Tad Eggleston: People that I was Batman, I showed up and they knew that I was Batman.
- 55:11Phil: Exactly. You know, some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.
- 55:15Tyler Johnson: The shark retaliator guys.
- 55:18Phil: Yes.
- 55:19Tad Eggleston: He said in, big Bang Theory. Such a great line. I got it.
- 55:26Tyler Johnson: Well, because, well, because Christian Bale kept saying, I'm Batman. And he goes.
- 55:31Tad Eggleston: Well, and they were ranking their Batmans in front of.
- 55:34Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 55:34Tad Eggleston: And, like, everybody was putting… I think it was Howard was going, but he's… I'm Batman! Well, I didn't have to tell anybody that I was Batman.
- 55:44Tyler Johnson: Everybody showed up!
- 55:45Tad Eggleston: And they knew I was Batman.
- 55:47Phil: He's still the number three because the all time best Batman is Kevin Conroy. So, you know.
- 55:52Tyler Johnson: I think so.
- 55:53Phil: Absolutely.
- 55:55Tad Eggleston: You know, I think it's much harder to define the all-time best Batman than it is to define the all-time best Joker.
- 56:02Tad Eggleston: All-time best joker is clearly Mark Hamill.
- 56:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Yes, correct, yeah.
- 56:07Tad Eggleston: And then it's a… then it's a toss-up between Heath Ledger and Cesar Romero.
- 56:12Phil: That's fair.
- 56:13Tyler Johnson: Really? You would go Caesar Romero?
- 56:15Phil: Cesar Romero's pretty good.
- 56:17Tyler Johnson: I mean, why he wouldn't even shave that mustache for his character.
- 56:20Phil: That's why. That's why. It defines the character and it like warps his face in a way.
- 56:27Tad Eggleston: any.
- 56:28Phil: makes him look just the tiniest bit weird and a tiniest bit creepy.
- 56:32Tad Eggleston: And he just, he managed…
- 56:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I agree.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: Like, like…
- 56:37Tad Eggleston: Silly and wild, I mean… Yeah. Like, this is an era where the… this is… this is, like, the pre…
- 56:48Tad Eggleston: Killing Joke era.
- 56:50Tyler Johnson: Yes, yep.
- 56:51Tad Eggleston: And still, like, if you're really paying attention, that Joker's really fucking twisted.
- 56:58Phil: Oh, I bet.
- 56:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I'm gonna go back and rewatch it. Is it streaming anywhere? Not the movie.
- 57:03Tad Eggleston: I don't know if it is.
- 57:05Phil: Probably. I'd have to check, but yeah.
- 57:09Phil: But yeah, because anyway, I need to get my mom to read Gossip Central. That's the ultimate.
- 57:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 57:14Phil: if.
- 57:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 57:15Phil: Great comic. Yeah. If she enjoys it. Anyway, Tad, what are… what three books do you hope will be spectacular?
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, surprisingly, I haven't read Mind Management number 4, New and Improved, yet.
- 57:26Phil: I.
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: I have it, the digital copy, but like I said earlier, I haven't read all the books that I wanted to read for this week, so I haven't gotten into as many in next week's. So it's… it leads my list, followed by American Caper number 11.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: From Dan Houser, Laszlo, David Lapham at Dark Horse. Anybody who doesn't know, it's Matt Kent doing mind management. And then Bleeding Hearts number 8 from Dennis Camp and Stippin Morian at DC Vertigo. Things I already know are spectacular, Phantographics has a couple of books coming out. One is.
- 57:59Tad Eggleston: Collected edition.
- 58:01Tad Eggleston: Second collection of, The Perils of Giuseppe Bergman from Milo Minera, The Magnificent African Adventure, and the other is, Noah Van Skyver's new graphic novel, The Mess.
- 58:15Tad Eggleston: The Magnificent African Adventure, about half of it was… was stuff that Paul Pope recommended the last time he was on the air, and we talked to… or I talked to Noah Van Skyver about the mess recently. I'm really excited for it. I'm also excited, though I don't know that I can afford them right away, but I'm hoping they pop up on.
- 58:34Tad Eggleston: on… Marvel Unlimited, the Further Adventures of Indiana Jones are being collected for the first time by Marvel.
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: As I was saying off-air when… when… when Phil was a little surprised that, like, I was so excited, like, Walt Simonson, David Michelini, John Byrne, Denny O'Neill, Archie Goodwin, John Buscema, Butch Guice.
- 59:01Tad Eggleston: Ron Friends, Howard Chaikin, David Mazzicelli, Herb Trimpe, Christopher Priest, Larry Lieber.
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: Steve Ditko.
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: Are among the people involved
- 59:15Tad Eggleston: In those comics, it's really kind of a who's who of… 70s and 80s… comic talent.
- 59:25Tad Eggleston: did some of those stories. Also, we have the Collected Peep Show.
- 59:31Tad Eggleston: And, the adaptation of John Kennedy Tools, Confederacy of Dunces by Errol Montes are things that I'm really excited for.
- 59:40Tad Eggleston: Next week.
- 59:41Tad Eggleston: So, Phil… or, Tyler, did you want to do any… Things that you're excited for?
- 59:48Tyler Johnson: I am not… I haven't even looked, I haven't even looked what's coming out. I'm okay.
- 59:53Phil: I don't hate it anymore.
- 59:54Tad Eggleston: also.
- 59:55Tyler Johnson: really.
- 59:56Tad Eggleston: in there.
- 59:57Tyler Johnson: It's weird, it's weird, you're not wrong, Phil. I just, like, oh yeah, that came out. Bleeding Hearts, I am very much looking forward to. That series has really, cemented itself as a…
- 1:00:11Tyler Johnson: I don't know, good comeback for Vertigo, I think?
- 1:00:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah. So I'm really looking forward to that one.
- 1:00:20Tyler Johnson: Let's see what else is out. : Bizarro Denver, I'm looking forward to. : I like the first issue. : Hammerfist. : But money shots, the fuck offs number two. : Absolutely.
- 1:00:31Tyler Johnson: Alright, there. That's what I'm looking forward to.
- 1:00:34Phil: Yeah, I picked, I don't usually, usually dip into DC or Marvel for these, but I picked the Batman run I'd be most likely to read next, which is, Ram V's Detective Comics run, which also had, material from Dan Waters, Sizeberry, Raphael, Bukirky, Hayden Sherman, Stefano Raphael, and many more, and that's getting an omnibus.
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was, it was a, it was a really good run.
- 1:00:58Phil: I heard it was I was.
- 1:00:59Tad Eggleston: well.
- 1:01:00Phil: When it was announced, I was like, damn, that would…
- 1:01:01Tad Eggleston: I read.
- 1:01:02Phil: that if I was reading DC.
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: I… I… I was… I was pleased that I got to… to talk to… to Ram.
- 1:01:09Tad Eggleston: Nice. During that run. So, so, so we, we, we…
- 1:01:12Tad Eggleston: We got to talk… talk some about that. It was… it was good stuff.
- 1:01:16Tad Eggleston: So, alright.
- 1:01:19Tad Eggleston: Not quite as tight as we'd hoped, but we're still out well before 9.
- 1:01:23Tyler Johnson: you.
- 1:01:25Tad Eggleston: Tyler, take us out.
- 1:01:26Tyler Johnson: Okay. Alright guys, thanks for listening, and we will catch you after the next page.
- 1:01:31Tyler Johnson: Later.
- 1:01:33Phil: No, no, no, no.
