- 1:00Speaker 1: Jumbo Joe story Sminia second, Alexander mcgilney, who for years
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'm like, how's this guy on the f All he
- 1:04Speaker 1: did was score goals. Finally, and now finally you're gonna
- 1:09Speaker 1: get Almo in there. Let's talk Jumbo Joe. People think
- 1:11Speaker 1: of you, that think of the Sharks, that think of
- 1:12Speaker 1: San Jose. What are your favorite memories of your time
- 1:15Speaker 1: of Joe Thorn.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I mean there's a there's a bunch of them. I mean, Jumbo,
- 1:20Speaker 3: there's so many stories. Uh, you know, we're gonna, we're gonna,
- 1:24Speaker 3: we're talking. I can't wait to talk to Andy Petrello today.
- 1:27Speaker 3: But we're gonna share some Jumbo Joe stories together, me
- 1:30Speaker 3: and her. But one that always comes to mind is
- 1:32Speaker 3: is my first year in the league. You know, you're
- 1:37Speaker 3: on the road and you're you know, you're staying in
- 1:39Speaker 3: a hotel and and uh, sorry, not my first year is,
- 1:42Speaker 3: but my second year, you're staying in You're staying in
- 1:45Speaker 3: the room in the hotel and and you know, after
- 1:48Speaker 3: practice it's the wine down time. You maybe get lunch.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Just before we had lunches at the rink, so you
- 1:53Speaker 3: maybe order lunch from the hotel and just hang out
- 1:56Speaker 3: a bit. And I get back to the hotel room
- 1:58Speaker 3: and you know, Jumbo Joe knocks on the door, and
- 2:01Speaker 3: and uh I opened. I said, yes, oh Joe, what's up?
- 2:06Speaker 3: And he goes, hey, walks into the room and goes,
- 2:09Speaker 3: let's order some food. So I'm like, okay, so you know,
- 2:11Speaker 3: we order some I order some food. And typically every
- 2:13Speaker 3: time we did that, I footed the bill, but he
- 2:17Speaker 3: would always he would pay any other bill, any at
- 2:19Speaker 3: any restaurant we were ever at, or any bar, he
- 2:22Speaker 3: would pay the bill. But if it was in the
- 2:24Speaker 3: your hotel room, you paid. And he came in literally
- 2:28Speaker 3: ordered a movie on demand, which you know at those
- 2:30Speaker 3: hotels they're like nineteen ninety nine at that point, they're
- 2:34Speaker 3: like the most expensive movie ever that you're renting on
- 2:38Speaker 3: the TV. So he rents. He rents the hurt Locker.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Now he rents the hurt Locker.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And pet Catherine pig a look great.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Movie, Yes, great movie, yeah, Jeremy Renner. And this is
- 2:50Speaker 3: after he ordered food. Orders the movie gets under the covers,
- 2:54Speaker 3: my covers. The bed was made slides underneath it kind
- 2:57Speaker 3: of shimmys himself under, so he doesn't undo the rest
- 3:00Speaker 3: of the bed, just kind of gets gets in a
- 3:02Speaker 3: little burrito, needs to take a nap, takes a nap
- 3:06Speaker 3: through I would say three quarters of the movie to
- 3:10Speaker 3: the whole movie. The food the food is ordered, yeah, exactly,
- 3:16Speaker 3: So now I'm sitting here on this couch with a
- 3:19Speaker 3: Hall of Famer next to me, sleeping, and I'm like, well,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I guess I'm watching the hurt Locker today. So I
- 3:24Speaker 3: sit there watching it. The food comes, I deliver the food.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It's in front of his it's right in front of
- 3:29Speaker 3: his bed. He wakes up, you know, last thirty minutes,
- 3:33Speaker 3: eats the food, watches the movie, takes a shit in
- 3:37Speaker 3: my bathroom, and then says hey, but that says that
- 3:40Speaker 3: says hey, Bud, thanks. He takes off, and I'm left
- 3:47Speaker 3: to sit there being like, how do I unpack all
- 3:50Speaker 3: of this right now? I don't understand it. I was
- 3:53Speaker 3: like that, you know, and it's just that's jumbo Jo.
- 3:56Speaker 3: That's just there's so many great stories of him from
- 4:01Speaker 3: you know, one of the other good one I have
- 4:03Speaker 3: that I always like to tell us. He was worried
- 4:06Speaker 3: that the team wasn't close enough. I can't remember what year,
- 4:11Speaker 3: so he decided to at the San Jose Sharks at
- 4:13Speaker 3: the SAP Center at the game rink.
- 4:16Speaker 4: He had a.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Wild idea to take off the the bathroom doors completely.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So we got on his back with a drill, took
- 4:27Speaker 3: off all the bathroom doors and left and left the
- 4:31Speaker 3: shitters exposed. So if you were to go and if
- 4:36Speaker 3: you were to go and take a deuce, uh, you
- 4:41Speaker 3: would be exposed to everybody like you were in prison,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and like you were sitting.
- 4:49Speaker 4: In prison.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And it lasted, I think like a week, but guys
- 4:54Speaker 3: were like, I think that was the most poop scared
- 4:57Speaker 3: you've ever seen. Guys were like going like different places
- 5:00Speaker 3: in the ring. And of course you don't Jumbo, there's
- 5:02Speaker 3: the Jumble's not doesn't have an ounce of shyness in
- 5:05Speaker 3: his body.
- 5:07Speaker 4: You know, he's just sad eyes.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And again you gotta remember, like the shitters are close
- 5:12Speaker 3: to the shower, so you're coming out of the shower
- 5:14Speaker 3: and you're like, what the hell is going on right now?
- 5:15Speaker 4: And coaches are.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Walking in like looking like she like so, and guys,
- 5:21Speaker 3: you know, like I said, guys are like running around
- 5:22Speaker 3: the rink. So finally they put the doors back on,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but he was on there with like a drill taking
- 5:26Speaker 3: the doors off to get the boys closer together. And yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 3: it's just one two of the million stories of Jumble.
- 5:34Speaker 3: When you come into the rink and just every day
- 5:37Speaker 3: was to be a two year old kid and I
- 5:39Speaker 3: think he still has kept that and I mean it's
- 5:42Speaker 3: amazing to see him. He's gonna cry one hundred percent there.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I can bet anything that he will be crying at
- 5:47Speaker 3: that event because he's an emotional guy and he's like
- 5:50Speaker 3: it's just one of those things. He's just wears his
- 5:52Speaker 3: heart on his sleeve. So amazing draft class when you
- 5:55Speaker 3: look at the not draft class. Sorry, yeah, Hall of
- 5:58Speaker 3: Fame inductees. Just amazing, amazing group. So it's congratulations too,
- 6:04Speaker 3: all of them.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I love those stories. I did not think we're going
- 6:06Speaker 2: to go in the shitter, but that was.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of poop stories, Yeah, a lot of
- 6:10Speaker 3: poop stories for uh, there's a lot of poop stories
- 6:13Speaker 3: for for that that era team that we.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Had scatological sense of humor. All right, Yeah, pretty good
- 6:19Speaker 1: weekend for the kids. Both called their front runers, Matthew
- 6:21Speaker 1: Shaeffer and Demodov, huge moments of the respective teams. On
- 6:24Speaker 1: Saturday night, Demodov scored the tie goal against Ottawa two
- 6:27Speaker 1: and a half left in regulation. The next day, Shaffer
- 6:29Speaker 1: scores twice, including the game time goal sixty seven seconds
- 6:33Speaker 1: left in regulation against Columbus. He becomes the youngest defenseman
- 6:37Speaker 1: in hockey history of the multi goal game passing Bobby Orr,
- 6:41Speaker 1: Shaeff red and assists Tuesday night against Boston. Demanoff one goal,
- 6:43Speaker 1: one assist against Philly feels like right now, JD. The
- 6:46Speaker 1: Calder's a two man race. Everyone was talking about the
- 6:49Speaker 1: demo got the start of the year. You were in
- 6:51Speaker 1: on Shaeffer.
- 6:51Speaker 2: This is really really impressive stuff so far.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah, did I did I take Schaeffer early because you
- 6:58Speaker 3: said demoof You're like, it might be a little bit overrated.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You know, I'm not crazy with him for Calder, I wouldn't.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I wouldn't keep it a flyer on Schaeffer because once
- 7:03Speaker 1: he has the team, You're like, why he.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Was supposed to be a fifth or six defense be
- 7:06Speaker 2: he's their best player.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, he's their best player.
- 7:08Speaker 3: They what I what I do like recently, Well, there's
- 7:12Speaker 3: like some games that he plays a little less he
- 7:14Speaker 3: was playing.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I mean, he's playing a lot of minutes.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Man, I think I honestly think it's it's Schaeffer's right
- 7:19Speaker 3: now as much as Demitov. As you know, Devnoff has
- 7:23Speaker 3: the electric factor, like you know, you you watch I
- 7:26Speaker 3: watched that game last night. Uh, that comeback. I mean
- 7:29Speaker 3: they had what I think it was four goals on
- 7:31Speaker 3: like nine shots. It was something crazy. They were just
- 7:33Speaker 3: getting their ass handed to him by Philly, and but
- 7:37Speaker 3: they he has that capability as.
- 7:39Speaker 4: A game breaker.
- 7:39Speaker 3: And when you have that game breaking ability, it's just
- 7:43Speaker 3: so fun to watch those guys because every time they
- 7:46Speaker 3: touch the puck, whether they're having the worst game ever
- 7:48Speaker 3: or they're you know, they're lighting the world on fire,
- 7:51Speaker 3: they're just so at the moment's notice, they bring you
- 7:53Speaker 3: out of your seat and Mike Johnson shout out to him.
- 7:56Speaker 3: You know, he kind of captured that beautifully last night.
- 7:59Speaker 3: He's just like he's one of those players that just
- 8:01Speaker 3: every time you touch the puck, you're kind of on
- 8:02Speaker 3: the edge of your seat. You're lifting up, You're ready
- 8:04Speaker 3: to jump in a moment's notice, because he's just plays
- 8:07Speaker 3: the game with such a you know, a level of
- 8:11Speaker 3: you know, carelessness, but that paired with his skill is
- 8:15Speaker 3: just it's so amazing. Like he doesn't know, he doesn't
- 8:18Speaker 3: believe that he can make a mistake, if that makes sense.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And when you when you have that belief, like even
- 8:22Speaker 3: when you are making a mistake here, it's the water
- 8:24Speaker 3: off your back and you go right to the next play.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And I mean, he's he is very he's something special
- 8:29Speaker 3: in terms of the electricity that he provides for that building.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And I mean, there's nothing better than watching a Habs
- 8:37Speaker 3: game when they're in Montreal, when they have a guy
- 8:40Speaker 3: like that that they love and their cheer and demmy god,
- 8:42Speaker 3: dab damn me, Like there's no better feeling and no
- 8:46Speaker 3: better atmosphere to watch. So he's he's for sure. But honestly,
- 8:49Speaker 3: what Shaefer's doing is absolutely incredible. I mean, eleven points
- 8:53Speaker 3: in thirteen games. He's playing first power play, penalty kill,
- 8:57Speaker 3: a second penalty kill, he's playing big minutes, playing against
- 9:00Speaker 3: the top units, and he's producing at a high level.
- 9:02Speaker 3: So to me, it's it's very much. Ah, I'm on
- 9:07Speaker 3: the you know again, I can't say Norris, that'd be
- 9:09Speaker 3: way too much. That'd be too crazy to say that
- 9:11Speaker 3: he's in that conversation, but because I still think he's young,
- 9:14Speaker 3: but I just think he for me, he's the calder
- 9:18Speaker 3: right now, hands down.
- 9:20Speaker 1: We're in Montreal a couple weeks ago for saber STAPs.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I asked Marty about Demondoff. I said, you know, this
- 9:24Speaker 1: guy's gonna call the demigogue before he's even done anything,
- 9:27Speaker 1: Like how do you how do you shield him away
- 9:28Speaker 1: from those expectations and he goes, well, we're not aware
- 9:30Speaker 1: of it. I said, what do you mean you haven't
- 9:32Speaker 1: heard him? And he goes, no, I now that you
- 9:34Speaker 1: say it, I'm sure people are saying it goes. But
- 9:35Speaker 1: we don't focus on that, Like we don't get up
- 9:37Speaker 1: and read our own headlines like I know in Montreal
- 9:39Speaker 1: I do.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That's what I said. I go, I think most players
- 9:41Speaker 2: would be aware.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I'm always reading my headlines.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Kid me, I go, you tell me guys don't read
- 9:46Speaker 1: the Montreal Gazette. He's like, no, they just get up.
- 9:48Speaker 2: We're just playing.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We try to block out limit distractions, like go, I
- 9:51Speaker 1: don't know how you can do that because you're a
- 9:52Speaker 1: hyper on. This guy's pretty insane, and I would think
- 9:54Speaker 1: it's around his support staff and coaches to go forget
- 9:57Speaker 1: about what they're saying, just focus on the task at hand.
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's easier said than done, especially in a city like Montreal.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Well, I think, and to his point, he's right, because
- 10:04Speaker 3: in Montreal, Toronto and Canada there's media training. You have
- 10:08Speaker 3: to stay out of that stuff because it'll drive you
- 10:10Speaker 3: nuts because that's the fan base. Is a lot of
- 10:13Speaker 3: that fan base, that's their life, Their life is following
- 10:16Speaker 3: that team. That's the fandom that we talk about. It's
- 10:20Speaker 3: just next levels. It's just really there's not much like
- 10:24Speaker 3: it when you're a part of it. So you have
- 10:26Speaker 3: to kind of find a way to disconnect because when
- 10:29Speaker 3: it's good, it's great, but they can make you feel
- 10:31Speaker 3: like you're you know, I've always said Canadian teams overvalue
- 10:35Speaker 3: their players, so they think they're players the good players
- 10:38Speaker 3: are you know, better than Connor McDavid or whatnot or
- 10:41Speaker 3: you know, obviously Edmonton thinks con mc table's Conwick tabd.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But like they'll overvalue and overhype their players to a
- 10:47Speaker 3: point where it's not even sustainable, Like they can't match
- 10:49Speaker 3: that level of of of adoration and admiration. So it's
- 10:56Speaker 3: it's it's very difficult to you can't watch the good
- 11:00Speaker 3: and you can't watch the bad. So I agree, and
- 11:02Speaker 3: I think, you know, Demidov, I don't think is he's
- 11:04Speaker 3: got decent English, but I don't think he's you know,
- 11:07Speaker 3: reading the Mareal Gazette in French right now, which is
- 11:09Speaker 3: perfect so for him shout out to Lapress.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Let's talk about the Capitals right now.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Pire Lukedubois al for an extended period of time lower
- 11:17Speaker 1: body injury. The old LBI Washington was the top seed
- 11:20Speaker 1: in the East last year. They're now six five and one.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Dubois Ovechkin overrated now, I'm kidding. Two goals in his
- 11:26Speaker 1: first twelve games sucks. Connor McMichael one goal is first
- 11:30Speaker 1: twelve games. He scored twenty six last year. Anthony Pavillier
- 11:33Speaker 1: two points his first twelve games. They have great defense,
- 11:36Speaker 1: but they're twenty eighth in offense. They're twenty seventh on
- 11:38Speaker 1: the power play. Neither you or me called them to
- 11:41Speaker 1: win the division, so I feel like we kind of
- 11:43Speaker 1: called the regression, But I didn't necessarily think they'd be
- 11:45Speaker 1: this bad.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Your thoughts.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I just think there's other teams that really surprised more
- 11:50Speaker 3: so than like, yeah, they didn't have anything compared to
- 11:54Speaker 3: what they did last year as a regression in terms
- 11:56Speaker 3: of the hot start they had, and I think everything
- 11:58Speaker 3: went right for them last year. Now there's a couple
- 12:01Speaker 3: of things that go wrong. You're getting your resilience tested,
- 12:03Speaker 3: but you got to believe that there's enough veteran leadership
- 12:06Speaker 3: there that they'll pull they'll you know, they'll start pulling away.
- 12:09Speaker 3: They're just they're getting unbelievable goaltending. Like Logan Thompson's on
- 12:12Speaker 3: my short list to be uh, you know, the starting
- 12:15Speaker 3: goalie for Team Canada at the Olympics. The way he's playing,
- 12:19Speaker 3: he's very you know, they just can't get run support.
- 12:21Speaker 3: So when you can't get run support, eventually you got
- 12:24Speaker 3: to think it turns with how much high powered offense
- 12:27Speaker 3: in scoring you have, especially ov you know, ob Ob
- 12:30Speaker 3: is the offensive driver on that team, and he's really
- 12:32Speaker 3: done next to nothing. He hasn't been able to I've
- 12:34Speaker 3: watched a couple of the games. He hasn't been able
- 12:36Speaker 3: to get open uh and get a shot off. So
- 12:39Speaker 3: I feel like that'll change. But if you look in
- 12:41Speaker 3: the metro and then and tell it's surprising, you know.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I think the Dan Muse, the emuse boosh loved.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Muse. I did not know what he looked like. So Monday,
- 12:56Speaker 2: did you talk to him? J D? I felt like
- 12:58Speaker 2: such a prick. I was about to be like, who's
- 13:00Speaker 2: this guy? This is equipment?
- 13:01Speaker 4: Like that's have you heard him talk?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Though?
- 13:03Speaker 4: He's got his deepest bear, deepest voice.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Doesn't look like this voice is unbelievable. I was like,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I was just that was my biggest take. I can't
- 13:12Speaker 1: believe that's Dan music and that's Dan Mus's voice.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I know he's got a hammer for sure, Big Dick,
- 13:19Speaker 3: Dan Muse. I mean he's swinging it for these banguins
- 13:23Speaker 3: fans man, Big Muse. Is that a break because you
- 13:34Speaker 3: look at him and you're like, this can't be an
- 13:36Speaker 3: NHL coach, and then you talk to him and you're like, oh,
- 13:38Speaker 3: this is an NHL coach.
- 13:40Speaker 4: This guy's a coach. He's he's great man Like, honestly,
- 13:45Speaker 4: he's the structure.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And I to be hard to bring this one back
- 13:50Speaker 3: on the rails, but uh, you know, I keep saying
- 13:54Speaker 3: it throughout training camp. He was talking about being connected,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and I think that they're playing such a good brand
- 14:02Speaker 3: of hockey and they're getting really good golden at times.
- 14:05Speaker 3: You know, obviously not last game. I thought they should
- 14:07Speaker 3: have walked away with that Toronto game, and Goalie just
- 14:10Speaker 3: kind of crowned made a comeback. But you know, you
- 14:12Speaker 3: look at them, you look at the devils. You know,
- 14:14Speaker 3: I think we all had the devils thinking that we
- 14:16Speaker 3: weren't sure what they were going to do. We said,
- 14:18Speaker 3: a healthy Jack Hughes and a healthy Devil's team is
- 14:21Speaker 3: very good. They're proving that in spades. You know, Columbus
- 14:24Speaker 3: is surprised. We knew the Rangers would be, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 3: probably not making the playoffs this year. None of us
- 14:30Speaker 3: had high hopes, and the Islanders have kind of surprised
- 14:34Speaker 3: at six five and one. Honestly, I think the way
- 14:36Speaker 3: they started as well, like how they've kind of brought
- 14:39Speaker 3: this back on the rails and they're playing good brand hockey.
- 14:41Speaker 4: So the Metro is a lot more.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Even though I still think it's the worst division in hockey,
- 14:46Speaker 3: there's still a lot there's still a.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Lot of open space there. So I don't know how
- 14:52Speaker 4: this is going to play out.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I don't know if Pittsburgh can hang on, but I
- 14:55Speaker 3: definitely think Washington will finish higher than where they are now.
- 14:58Speaker 3: It's just going to be a question of can they
- 15:00Speaker 3: get that. You know, you never want to waste good goaltending,
- 15:03Speaker 3: so I think it sucks, but it sucks that you
- 15:06Speaker 3: you know, if you're a goalie and you're giving up
- 15:08Speaker 3: less than two goals a game and you can't win.
- 15:10Speaker 4: It's like there's something wrong. So but I think they'll
- 15:12Speaker 4: write the ship.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I did want to tell you my quick Crosby story.
- 15:15Speaker 1: How often did you mess with your stick when you
- 15:17Speaker 1: played it. I'm just curious as far as your blade.
- 15:20Speaker 4: I never my blade. My whole thing was my grip.
- 15:23Speaker 4: So I used to spray.
- 15:23Speaker 3: I used to spray paint my stick because I didn't
- 15:26Speaker 3: like I didn't like the natural stickiness of it. So
- 15:30Speaker 3: i'd spray paint it. And when you spray paint it,
- 15:32Speaker 3: i'd spray paint it all black when I was in Dallas,
- 15:34Speaker 3: so then it was really smooth. But then I would
- 15:36Speaker 3: put the I can't even say that word anyway, we
- 15:40Speaker 3: put the beater on it. It's a big it looks
- 15:43Speaker 3: like a bludget. It's all this tape that they they
- 15:45Speaker 3: unwind all this tape backwards onto a knob of a stick,
- 15:49Speaker 3: and the turn you'll see it on the side of
- 15:50Speaker 3: the benches, and it's like it's very sticky and you
- 15:53Speaker 3: rub it on your stick and it gives you grip.
- 15:55Speaker 3: So I would put just a little bit where I
- 15:57Speaker 3: felt I liked to have a little bit of stickiness,
- 16:00Speaker 3: but I would do that would be the weirdest thing
- 16:02Speaker 3: I do, and then I'd kind of always mess with it,
- 16:05Speaker 3: but I'd always be in the room spray painting.
- 16:08Speaker 4: My stick's black.
- 16:08Speaker 3: That's probably why I have some head fogginess now and
- 16:11Speaker 3: some some weird weird, uh weird thoughts and sleeps at times.
- 16:15Speaker 3: But yeah, but anyway, tell me about Crosby because he's better.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Nobody wants to hear about me. Jason Emmer's seven hondred
- 16:21Speaker 3: game age levans and spray bend and sticks. They want
- 16:22Speaker 3: to be like, tell me about Crosby, You're a fucking idiot.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So the fact he's now at seventeen hundred points and
- 16:28Speaker 1: Jody Schellen are asking him about his blade because he said,
- 16:30Speaker 1: your backhand is so great.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Do you mention the blade?
- 16:32Speaker 1: He goes, never, he said, Nate does a lot. McKinnon's
- 16:35Speaker 1: always fiddling with his. He goes, I never do it.
- 16:37Speaker 1: He was the reason why is the backhand is such
- 16:39Speaker 1: a weapon for me that therefore they have to respect
- 16:42Speaker 1: the backhand that becomes strict to the forehead. And he goes,
- 16:44Speaker 1: you know, I keep the stick way up here like this,
- 16:45Speaker 1: like on his chest, and he's like, I never wanted
- 16:47Speaker 1: to fiddle too much of it because to me, he
- 16:49Speaker 1: goes and it kind of goes back to what Marty
- 16:51Speaker 1: told us last week in control, he goes ninety eight
- 16:53Speaker 1: percent of the time the puck is not on your stick,
- 16:56Speaker 1: so he goes amount of right. Think of that, like,
- 16:59Speaker 1: think how often you were playing, how often Jason News
- 17:01Speaker 1: actually touched the puck. It's this quick boom a lot
- 17:04Speaker 1: if you're worried too much, if the stick is how
- 17:07Speaker 1: it's impacting the pockets, like oftentimes you're away from the
- 17:09Speaker 1: play anyway.
- 17:10Speaker 2: So it's like, it's really interesting.
- 17:11Speaker 1: The sticks feels like it's like almost extensive use a
- 17:14Speaker 1: hockey player, right, It's like a boxer's gloves.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's who you are, and.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yet some guys are constantly tinkering and it sid doesn't.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I just found that interesting. And you were a guy
- 17:22Speaker 1: who just messed with the grip but not the actual blade.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I would, if you know.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Whenever my kids starts playing hockey, I definitely I think
- 17:31Speaker 3: starting with a straight or blade for all kids should
- 17:34Speaker 3: be learn how to play with like the dry title
- 17:37Speaker 3: and the Crosby blade. Learn to learn to play with
- 17:40Speaker 3: a backhand first. Everything right now is like the sackic hook.
- 17:43Speaker 3: You're trying to get that release. But learn how to
- 17:45Speaker 3: play with both sides of the puck, because you see
- 17:49Speaker 3: these kids now they get on their backhands, they can't
- 17:51Speaker 3: make a pass, they can't do anything. So learn how
- 17:53Speaker 3: to kind of control that get a good shot when
- 17:56Speaker 3: you have a stick that just you know doesn't help you.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And then from there, when you kind of add a curve,
- 18:01Speaker 3: you're gonna it's gonna open up some stuff for you.
- 18:03Speaker 3: But I mean, yeah, he's, uh, he's an anomaly. And
- 18:07Speaker 3: you know he's because you look at like ov Ovi
- 18:10Speaker 3: has the curve. It's like looks looks like a shopping
- 18:14Speaker 3: you know, like a shopping store, a mini mart broom
- 18:18Speaker 3: like you're doing how do you how do you? It
- 18:20Speaker 3: looks like a hile I racket where you just kind
- 18:22Speaker 3: of how do you have shoot this thing? It's just
- 18:24Speaker 3: like impossible to shoot. So so yeah, so I just
- 18:28Speaker 3: think it's the backhand is a weapon and should be
- 18:30Speaker 3: used more. And I mean, no one does it better
- 18:32Speaker 3: than said So he's the man.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Cross me off to a blazing store.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Penguins didn't have a three nothing lead that fell apart
- 18:37Speaker 1: against the least as they came back to win that
- 18:39Speaker 1: game four to three in regulation. Still to come here
- 18:41Speaker 1: on NHL Unscripted. Andy Petrillo one of our favorites. Her
- 18:44Speaker 1: book is called Just Call Me Andy Sports Stories. Betrail
- 18:47Speaker 1: Blazer makes you check it out, find out why Brian
- 18:49Speaker 1: Burke chastised her in Afghanistan.
- 18:52Speaker 2: All that more coming up next.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Our special guest has covered practically every sport for practically
- 19:09Speaker 1: every major broadcaster in Canada and was the first ever
- 19:13Speaker 1: full time female member of Hockey Night.
- 19:15Speaker 2: In Canada studio team.
- 19:16Speaker 1: She currently serves as a reporter an occasional host with
- 19:19Speaker 1: Me on Prime Monday Night Hockey Amazon. Her book is
- 19:22Speaker 1: absolutely fantastic. Just Call Me Andy Sports Stories, matrail Blazer
- 19:26Speaker 1: is out right now.
- 19:27Speaker 2: It is our friend Andy Patrolla. Hello Andy, nice to
- 19:29Speaker 2: see you.
- 19:30Speaker 5: I can't believe I'm on. This is so exciting to y'all.
- 19:33Speaker 3: With you guys, ad Man, you number one. You did
- 19:37Speaker 3: not also mention coast to coast.
- 19:39Speaker 1: That's right, that's when the demers Patrolla match happens continue
- 19:43Speaker 1: continue very true.
- 19:44Speaker 5: We've had some memorable moments, one which still makes the
- 19:47Speaker 5: highlight reels of Jason and his short shorts Hall you're missing.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Out wardrobe choices, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Andy, you know,
- 19:59Speaker 3: talk a little bit. Let's start obviously the elephant in
- 20:02Speaker 3: the room here, the book. How did it come to
- 20:04Speaker 3: get and for you, what's been the response so far?
- 20:07Speaker 3: You're talking about before just being with a publicist. This
- 20:09Speaker 3: is a kind of new territory for you.
- 20:12Speaker 5: It is so bizarre. Yeah, because this is my first book,
- 20:15Speaker 5: so the whole process is completely new to me. But yeah,
- 20:18Speaker 5: I said I would. I would say I started writing
- 20:21Speaker 5: this in January of twenty twenty three. I had a
- 20:23Speaker 5: literary agent reach out to me, and he's done a
- 20:24Speaker 5: lot of books for a lot of men in Canada,
- 20:27Speaker 5: like right from like James Duffy, you know, Ken read
- 20:30Speaker 5: Bob Mackenzie. So he's helped a lot of those guys
- 20:33Speaker 5: put out books. And he's like, hmm, I don't think
- 20:36Speaker 5: a woman in Canada in sports has ever done this.
- 20:39Speaker 5: So he reached out, and I wouldn't say it was
- 20:41Speaker 5: like a lot of convincing, But at first I didn't
- 20:43Speaker 5: want to do it because I thought, who the heck
- 20:45Speaker 5: is going to want to read what I've been through?
- 20:48Speaker 5: I don't know, like you always think, like if I
- 20:49Speaker 5: throw a party, is anyone going to show up? So
- 20:51Speaker 5: I'm like, if I write a book, is anyone going
- 20:52Speaker 5: to read it? But you know, he kind of convinced
- 20:55Speaker 5: me I had some stories to share, and then I thought,
- 20:58Speaker 5: you know what, I do want to write this because
- 21:00Speaker 5: you know, in the first part of your career, and
- 21:03Speaker 5: oftentimes it's in the first part of your life, like
- 21:04Speaker 5: it's about you what can I do to make myself better?
- 21:07Speaker 2: Well?
- 21:07Speaker 5: Can I do to progress my career? What can I
- 21:08Speaker 5: do for me? And that's not necessarily a bad thing, right,
- 21:11Speaker 5: But then there comes another point in your life, that
- 21:13Speaker 5: second half where you think, Okay, even though I'm still
- 21:15Speaker 5: learning and evolving, how do I give back? Now I'm
- 21:17Speaker 5: at that point in my career, how do I give back?
- 21:20Speaker 5: And I feel like the book is just a really
- 21:21Speaker 5: good way to do that because I touch on some
- 21:23Speaker 5: topics storylines that I feel are beneficial for a lot
- 21:27Speaker 5: of young broadcasters, obviously, especially women. So I just I
- 21:31Speaker 5: hope that my sharing of my experiences can help them
- 21:35Speaker 5: get through some things here in the industry too, So
- 21:37Speaker 5: it's also my way of giving back.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I was lucky enough to work with the Andy at
- 21:40Speaker 1: MLSCA for a year back in nine. So what I'm
- 21:42Speaker 1: doing to try to help the pub for the book,
- 21:44Speaker 1: as I told her the other day, is I'm screenshotting
- 21:47Speaker 1: whenever a person is mentioned, then texting them. So Steve Colius,
- 21:50Speaker 1: I screenshot it and circle like, look you got mentioned
- 21:53Speaker 1: Andy's new book, Hoping they we'll take the hit and go,
- 21:55Speaker 1: oh my god, where's the book available?
- 21:56Speaker 2: I gotta go get that.
- 21:57Speaker 1: So for Andy, I've done this down to David Amber,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I've don this to Steve Coulius. I send this to
- 22:01Speaker 1: Mike Johnson, I've done this to James DOTHI why.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Has been like, oh where can I buy the book?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Send me a link?
- 22:06Speaker 1: But eventually we're going to crack one brow. But listen,
- 22:09Speaker 1: you are a gifted writer. There's no question about it.
- 22:12Speaker 1: And I mean I know you studied English back there
- 22:13Speaker 1: at Yorkshire to York Yeoman, Back of the Day, now
- 22:16Speaker 1: York Lions. But you're a gifted writer and a great storyteller.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Like what I love about the book is, and I've
- 22:21Speaker 1: got thirty pages left, is it's quick. It's just story
- 22:23Speaker 1: from this snapshot, from this, here's the Olympics, here's soccer.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It's not like you know, Cradle to the Grave, Andy Patrillo.
- 22:29Speaker 1: It's like really entertaining and breezy and fast paced. So
- 22:31Speaker 1: let's get to some of those great stories. By My
- 22:33Speaker 1: favorite story right now is I just close wise, I go,
- 22:35Speaker 1: what's the first thing you think of Afghanistan? Brian Burke
- 22:39Speaker 1: tell the story?
- 22:40Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, Brian Burke was a hero in Afghanistan.
- 22:44Speaker 5: So this is when so working for Maple Sports and Entertainment,
- 22:47Speaker 5: Tom and saw me. The CEO loves our troops and
- 22:51Speaker 5: for years he was organizing trips to Afghanistan to bring
- 22:54Speaker 5: the Stanley Cup, to bring former and echellers and really
- 22:58Speaker 5: just lift the spirits of those defending our freedom. And
- 23:03Speaker 5: one of those trips I was on and Brian Burke
- 23:05Speaker 5: was was on it as well, and it's it's it's
- 23:08Speaker 5: sad and it's uplifting because what's sad about it is
- 23:11Speaker 5: he had just lost his son a couple months before
- 23:13Speaker 5: we left on this trip. And I remember saying to him, like,
- 23:16Speaker 5: I can't believe you're still here. I think people would
- 23:18Speaker 5: understand that you would have to like throw in the
- 23:21Speaker 5: towel on this trip, and he said, no, these men
- 23:24Speaker 5: and women are putting their lives on the line for
- 23:25Speaker 5: us every single day, and I promised them that I
- 23:28Speaker 5: would be there, so I'm going to be there. And
- 23:30Speaker 5: I always liked Burkie, but like that trip just brought
- 23:33Speaker 5: it to a whole other level where I'm like, Wow,
- 23:35Speaker 5: you just lost your son and you're you know, you're
- 23:38Speaker 5: you're still sticking to your word and your promise here.
- 23:41Speaker 5: And he was great. And one morning, you know, he
- 23:44Speaker 5: woke up early. I mean not that the not that
- 23:47Speaker 5: a war zone ever sleeps, but you know, he was
- 23:50Speaker 5: up early, and there was a Timmy's on base, because
- 23:52Speaker 5: of course there has to always be at tim Martin's
- 23:54Speaker 5: on base for the Canadians, and he just stood there
- 23:58Speaker 5: and just bought everyone their breakfast, whatever they wanted. He
- 24:01Speaker 5: just stood there for hours. And even when I went
- 24:04Speaker 5: up there and I wanted to help, I'm like, you
- 24:05Speaker 5: know kind of He's like, no, listen, like we got this,
- 24:08Speaker 5: don't you worry. Just make sure that you know, you
- 24:10Speaker 5: take the orders, make sure all the troops all their
- 24:11Speaker 5: orders are being taken and no one gets left behind there.
- 24:14Speaker 5: So you know, he would do things like that. And then, yeah,
- 24:18Speaker 5: so a bit of a funnier story that I share.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I didn't really grasp that I was in a war zone.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I still wanted to treat it like I was at home.
- 24:27Speaker 5: So I woke up early. I was a little jet lag,
- 24:30Speaker 5: and I'm like, I need a shower. So we're in
- 24:32Speaker 5: like port like we're we're we're in like portables, right.
- 24:36Speaker 5: I don't know you guys have portables, right, you're overflowing
- 24:38Speaker 5: in school. You're not in the class. You're in these portables.
- 24:40Speaker 5: So that's kind of what they were, these makeshift portable barracks.
- 24:43Speaker 5: And then across the way it was another portable that
- 24:45Speaker 5: had the proper shower facilities. So I go across. It's
- 24:49Speaker 5: probably like five in the morning or something. I take
- 24:52Speaker 5: my shower, which is also a way too long. I
- 24:54Speaker 5: do not know how to take a military two minute shower.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Like oh you want you said the one female officer
- 25:00Speaker 1: while you were getting undressed. When in undressed shower, it
- 25:02Speaker 1: was already out and.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I'm still like shampooing my hair. I'm like, how did
- 25:06Speaker 5: she do that? That was incredible? And I'm like, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 5: using up all the hot water for these soords. I'm like, oh,
- 25:14Speaker 5: they hate me for life. So I go to get
- 25:17Speaker 5: dressed and what do you know I didn't bring a
- 25:19Speaker 5: change of clothes, and foggy brain doesn't think to put
- 25:23Speaker 5: her pjs back on because I brought pj's. Like what
- 25:26Speaker 5: else am I going to sleep in in Afghanistan? I'm like, oh,
- 25:28Speaker 5: get my pj's. So I'm like, I'll just go with
- 25:31Speaker 5: my towel. I'm like, it's five in the morning, everyone's sleeping, like,
- 25:34Speaker 5: not a big deal. I'll go in my towel right
- 25:36Speaker 5: across the way, go back into the barracks, and well,
- 25:39Speaker 5: what do you know? First thing I do when I
- 25:40Speaker 5: opened the door, truck of soldiers is just driving by,
- 25:43Speaker 5: and all the dudes are like, what the actual heck?
- 25:47Speaker 5: There is a naked woman on base and they were
- 25:50Speaker 5: all just kind of like turning their heads, going, oh
- 25:53Speaker 5: my god. Right, and I think, oh geez. And the
- 25:55Speaker 5: next thing I hear is somebody just giving it to
- 25:58Speaker 5: me right, like what the f patrol? What? And I'm
- 26:02Speaker 5: like what. I look up and there's Burkie. He can't
- 26:04Speaker 5: sleep either. He's like, what in the actual hell are
- 26:07Speaker 5: you doing? Put some freaking clothes on. I'm like, I shall,
- 26:12Speaker 5: and I thought it was early. He's like, it's a
- 26:14Speaker 5: bloody warzone. Nobody's sleeping. He's like, of course when you
- 26:17Speaker 5: walk anyway, So he was just like it was great.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Berkie was great. It was sad, but he was just wonderful.
- 26:23Speaker 5: And I just you know that that trip was eye opening.
- 26:26Speaker 5: So many of those. There's other stories that I share
- 26:27Speaker 5: in there of like just you know, going visiting the
- 26:31Speaker 5: hospital and just you know the damage that war does.
- 26:35Speaker 5: So there's a lot that I learned there. And there's
- 26:36Speaker 5: also a story when I was in Afghanistan about I
- 26:39Speaker 5: may or may not have lost to Stanley cup Ring.
- 26:41Speaker 5: So you have to read that.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 26:44Speaker 3: You know, I wanted to ask you a little bit
- 26:45Speaker 3: about about talking about Burkie and people seeing another side
- 26:49Speaker 3: and you know, you kind of as a broadcaster and
- 26:53Speaker 3: somebody who's in the locker room, you see the other
- 26:56Speaker 3: side of guys, You see the other side of girls
- 26:58Speaker 3: that are that are playing professional sports. Do you feel
- 27:01Speaker 3: like sometimes you owe it to kind of show them
- 27:03Speaker 3: in the best life possible? And then is that something
- 27:06Speaker 3: that's a little bit more nuanced and something you had
- 27:08Speaker 3: to learn kind of as you kept you know, growing
- 27:11Speaker 3: into the into the game, so to speak.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Sure, because the more you get comfortable in your own skin,
- 27:16Speaker 5: and you get comfortable like talking to people and interview
- 27:19Speaker 5: skills and whatever, you feel like you can bring out
- 27:22Speaker 5: the best in others. And I think, you know, sometimes
- 27:26Speaker 5: that takes time. Some people can get it right away,
- 27:28Speaker 5: but I also think it takes time because the players
- 27:30Speaker 5: themselves have to just learn to trust you to show
- 27:32Speaker 5: their personality. So that's why I do like, I love
- 27:36Speaker 5: I love features. I think features are the best way
- 27:38Speaker 5: because it's really hard sometimes to get anyone to show
- 27:41Speaker 5: their personality when they have like ten microphones jammed in
- 27:44Speaker 5: their face in a scrum setting. Like that's difficult, right,
- 27:47Speaker 5: or even if I'm doing like my intermission interviews, you know,
- 27:51Speaker 5: some guys can show personality the other night because I
- 27:54Speaker 5: mean obviously they were they were leading. But again he's
- 27:56Speaker 5: a veteran like Eric Carlson was hilarious in.
- 28:00Speaker 4: That Firm's good.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Yeah, but like not every guy can do that either, right,
- 28:04Speaker 5: Like it's hard. So that's why I do to your point,
- 28:07Speaker 5: I love the feature part of things, and because that's
- 28:10Speaker 5: the other side of athletes and they have a little
- 28:12Speaker 5: bit more time and a little bit more room to
- 28:15Speaker 5: show themselves. And I think in general, the NHL does
- 28:17Speaker 5: a really good job with that, especially in the beginning
- 28:19Speaker 5: of the year when they do a bunch of things
- 28:20Speaker 5: with players and then put that out. But I think
- 28:23Speaker 5: it's important to show that because sometimes in the world
- 28:26Speaker 5: of sport, you know, I mean, and I knows this
- 28:28Speaker 5: as a broadcaster, Jason, you know this. As a player,
- 28:31Speaker 5: you can become numbers and that's it. And I think
- 28:34Speaker 5: people sometimes forget the human. They forget the son, the brother,
- 28:38Speaker 5: the husband, whatever. And I maybe I'm just getting sappier.
- 28:42Speaker 2: The older I get, but it's true.
- 28:45Speaker 5: I love to talk about the like remind even if
- 28:47Speaker 5: you have a crappy game and it's my job to
- 28:49Speaker 5: say that was a horrible play by Jason pinched to
- 28:53Speaker 5: her whatever led to the goal, I still will say
- 28:56Speaker 5: it in a way where it's like, well, nobody's more
- 28:59Speaker 5: upset than Jason about that play, right, I'm not gonna
- 29:02Speaker 5: hammer you like you're not a human. So I think
- 29:05Speaker 5: it's really important to highlight that with a lot of
- 29:07Speaker 5: these players.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Again, the book is called Just Call Me Andy.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Sports Stories from the Trail Blazer Andrea Patroller her formal name,
- 29:13Speaker 1: she has gone by Andy.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Let's go to the Uh yeah, did you learn that? Wait?
- 29:17Speaker 5: Did you just learn That's why the book's.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Called Just Call and the Hell.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I just like hearing that Andrea just call me and
- 29:25Speaker 1: our personal and and he's like, wait, wait, what's going
- 29:27Speaker 1: on here?
- 29:27Speaker 2: Who's who's the the ket of the bag? Some of
- 29:29Speaker 2: the best stuff.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Again, I think it's important not only for aspiring broadcasters
- 29:33Speaker 1: and for everybody, but particularly andy for women.
- 29:35Speaker 2: This stuff is really important.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Social media chapter I thought was particularly interesting because as
- 29:39Speaker 1: you're doing something which no one has done before, being
- 29:42Speaker 1: a trailblazer hosting these shows, you're going to get a
- 29:43Speaker 1: lot of negative feedback. And as you said, you were
- 29:46Speaker 1: reluctant to join Twitter, as was I. You don't have
- 29:48Speaker 1: a Facebook page, nor do I. You were reluctant to
- 29:50Speaker 1: do on Facebook girls, but you and I both feel like, well,
- 29:54Speaker 1: it's part of the product, and we're working for the company,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and they want me to repost. We probably should, so
- 29:58Speaker 1: you feel an obligation. That's why you started doing it
- 30:00Speaker 1: at twenty level MLSC. But this is the kind of
- 30:03Speaker 1: stuff that you have had to resort and I'm glad
- 30:05Speaker 1: that you actually included the exact tweet. This is a
- 30:08Speaker 1: revolting example that was sent me after Brian Trotcy was
- 30:10Speaker 1: a guest on my radio show, Slavic Supremacy. Who's dick
- 30:14Speaker 1: to this privileged white woman suck to get this job?
- 30:16Speaker 1: Of the thousands of males out there that earn and
- 30:18Speaker 1: deserved this job, they find a pussy to a man's job.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So I'm to believe this vagina loves Trotcy and hockey
- 30:23Speaker 1: more than a man. And as you said, this is like,
- 30:25Speaker 1: this is an avalanche of stuff that's so bad.
- 30:29Speaker 2: For years you've been getting this stuff. I hope it's
- 30:31Speaker 2: less now.
- 30:33Speaker 5: Well maybe maybe not. I don't know, because something else
- 30:36Speaker 5: I point out on the book is I shut my.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Mentions, turned off the notifications mart you learn.
- 30:41Speaker 5: To control your social media, which you can control it, right,
- 30:44Speaker 5: So I turned my mentions off on Twitter. I don't
- 30:47Speaker 5: check dms on Instagram. I used to even have mentions
- 30:50Speaker 5: off on Instagram, so unless I followed you, you couldn't
- 30:53Speaker 5: even put a message on my Instagram page. I changed
- 30:56Speaker 5: that because again in this day and age, I go,
- 30:59Speaker 5: when you work with brands, they want to see analytics,
- 31:01Speaker 5: they want to see those numbers. But like, I also
- 31:04Speaker 5: feel like I got into this social media game when
- 31:06Speaker 5: I was older so I was already through my formative years,
- 31:09Speaker 5: and I feel like I have the mental capacity a
- 31:12Speaker 5: little bit stronger to deal with these things. The kids
- 31:14Speaker 5: coming up like this is just their world, this is
- 31:16Speaker 5: their their life, and I, oh, my heart breaks when
- 31:19Speaker 5: I think about it. But yeah, I mean there's and
- 31:22Speaker 5: there's been so many studies done, and that's why I
- 31:25Speaker 5: wanted to highlight it because I know that men deal
- 31:27Speaker 5: with a lot of stuff too, and I can only
- 31:28Speaker 5: imagine what you guys get. The difference is that there's
- 31:31Speaker 5: always some sexual undertone with women, Like oftentimes when men
- 31:36Speaker 5: get attacked on social media, not all the time, but
- 31:39Speaker 5: oftentimes it does have to do with the job at hand,
- 31:43Speaker 5: even with the athletes, right, Like if an athlete gets attacked,
- 31:46Speaker 5: a male athlete, it's because he had a bad game.
- 31:49Speaker 5: If a female athlete gets attacked, it's often it's not
- 31:53Speaker 5: necessarily results based. It's just like you're a whore, or
- 31:57Speaker 5: you deserve to be raped, or even if people think
- 32:00Speaker 5: they're being complementary, it's like I just want to do X,
- 32:03Speaker 5: Y and Z to you and it's horrific, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 5: sexual descriptions of things that they want to do. Like
- 32:08Speaker 5: there's always that type of undertone where you know that
- 32:12Speaker 5: whole sexual violence is still used as a weapon against women,
- 32:17Speaker 5: and in social media it's very, very prevalent. So if
- 32:22Speaker 5: any man wants to dismiss me as a woman in
- 32:25Speaker 5: sports broadcasting, they just resort to that. They resort to,
- 32:30Speaker 5: you know, the sexualization of me. So dismiss me because
- 32:33Speaker 5: I'm too pretty, too fat, too ugly, you know, I'm
- 32:38Speaker 5: I'm bangable. I'm not bangable, Like everything is judged by that.
- 32:42Speaker 5: I could have just given the most incredible analysis. That's
- 32:46Speaker 5: not what they see, that's not what they care about.
- 32:48Speaker 5: So and that's really hard on women. And it's also
- 32:51Speaker 5: really friggin scary because when somebody attacks you in that way,
- 32:56Speaker 5: you start to look over your shoulder because you're like,
- 32:59Speaker 5: is that person around. I'll tell you this. This wasn't
- 33:01Speaker 5: in the book, but I remember one time, this is
- 33:03Speaker 5: a couple of years ago, I did get uh And
- 33:06Speaker 5: the only reason why I opened it was because I
- 33:08Speaker 5: saw that it was somebody who worked in the Union
- 33:13Speaker 5: of people that we use in broadcasting, and I went, oh,
- 33:17Speaker 5: is this somebody I know? Like they sent me a
- 33:19Speaker 5: DM and me like, open this up. And it was
- 33:22Speaker 5: a dick pic and it was somebody who works in
- 33:26Speaker 5: the unions, so a group of people that we use
- 33:30Speaker 5: in the sports broadcasting world. So now I'm definitely a
- 33:34Speaker 5: massive union. It goes like across Canada and I think
- 33:37Speaker 5: it's even in the state, but like either way, I'm
- 33:39Speaker 5: now I'm freaking out because I'm like on location at
- 33:42Speaker 5: a place where I know we use these people, and
- 33:45Speaker 5: I'm like, is this guy somewhere here? Is he here?
- 33:47Speaker 5: Like yeah, actually the one now like helping me out?
- 33:50Speaker 5: What's like? So it gets it can enter your real
- 33:53Speaker 5: life and it can be really scary too.
- 33:55Speaker 2: A couple of quick thoughts on that one.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I loved the quote from Dave cadell or old friend
- 33:59Speaker 1: used to run the fan who said if a male
- 34:01Speaker 1: mispronounced his name.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Or makes a mistake, they go, oh, he just made
- 34:03Speaker 2: a mistake. But if a woman does it, she doesn't
- 34:06Speaker 2: know what she's talking about. She's a woman. I thought
- 34:07Speaker 2: that was bang on, like that happens all the time.
- 34:11Speaker 1: And also I like your point, but comments turning off
- 34:14Speaker 1: notifications for positive comments, I agree with that too.
- 34:17Speaker 2: That can get in your head. Oh, i'd NaN's killing itself.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Even viz are so awesome.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Oh, so then you get lazy or whatever, like no, no,
- 34:22Speaker 1: I don't want to hear anything. I don't want positive
- 34:24Speaker 1: or negative.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Just go andy.
- 34:27Speaker 3: You know, talking about that too, like how important becomes
- 34:29Speaker 3: like wardrobe because you know in the book you mentioned
- 34:31Speaker 3: you wore leather pants social media you face a ton
- 34:34Speaker 3: of backlash, Like how does that then become I can
- 34:37Speaker 3: only imagine like you're picking out your outfit and you're like,
- 34:40Speaker 3: I gotta, like one, be presentable, show myself, you know,
- 34:44Speaker 3: be a woman at the same time, like I have to,
- 34:46Speaker 3: to your point, be looking over my shoulder and then
- 34:48Speaker 3: also face backlass.
- 34:49Speaker 4: You got to kind of like toe that line.
- 34:51Speaker 2: But before you even answer, I want to just say.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Andy quotes The Devil Worst Product when she talks about
- 34:55Speaker 1: the fast there's a chapter on fashion. There's this brilliant
- 34:58Speaker 1: in the movie The Devil Worst Pot where Anne Hathaway's
- 35:00Speaker 1: character snickers at Meryl Streep's character as the latter is
- 35:03Speaker 1: putting together a fashion look.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Take yeah, love that segment because and this is where
- 35:08Speaker 5: it's far more deeply psychological when it comes to what
- 35:11Speaker 5: women wear than I think even women themselves recognize. But
- 35:15Speaker 5: you're right, you are again as a woman, your credibility
- 35:20Speaker 5: is judged based on what you wear. And I obviously
- 35:23Speaker 5: talk about some men who wear some wacky fashions. And
- 35:27Speaker 5: even though people are, sorry, Jason, even though people will
- 35:31Speaker 5: comment on the wacky fashion, that man's credibility is not
- 35:36Speaker 5: judged by it, but a woman's is. So she's showing
- 35:39Speaker 5: too much skin, that means she lacks credibility. Even if
- 35:43Speaker 5: she's covered up too much, she's too prudish. Let loose
- 35:46Speaker 5: a little bit, right, like a woman. It's very hard
- 35:48Speaker 5: for a woman to win when it comes to what
- 35:50Speaker 5: to wear. And I even acknowledge that in my book,
- 35:52Speaker 5: where I'm like, some of you might be wondering what
- 35:54Speaker 5: the actual heck are you doing including a chapter here
- 35:56Speaker 5: all on clothing. But that's how much stress it can
- 36:00Speaker 5: cause for a lot of women. And of course, you
- 36:02Speaker 5: know a lot of women have also been told there's
- 36:05Speaker 5: a certain way to dress in order to feel sexy
- 36:08Speaker 5: and beautiful, and that way to dress is to attract
- 36:11Speaker 5: the male gaze. So I know, like people are very
- 36:14Speaker 5: quick to be like, oh, look what that woman's wearing,
- 36:16Speaker 5: or she's got cleavage, or her skirts too short, and
- 36:18Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, but I also think she doesn't even
- 36:22Speaker 5: realize because it's generations even before her. That's what she
- 36:26Speaker 5: was told to wear in order to be attractive. That's
- 36:29Speaker 5: what she was told to wear in order to attract
- 36:32Speaker 5: the male audience. Which as much as we have a
- 36:34Speaker 5: ton of female viewership, right, it's still dominated by men.
- 36:40Speaker 5: And that woman she gets dressed thinking that she's dressing appropriately,
- 36:44Speaker 5: but she's actually dressing for men. Is she even really
- 36:48Speaker 5: dressing for herself? Is she even even really dressing for
- 36:51Speaker 5: other women? So I find that it's really a deeper
- 36:54Speaker 5: psychological thing than I think some people even know about
- 36:58Speaker 5: or are even willing to dive into. So again, it
- 37:01Speaker 5: took me a long time. I didn't even know this
- 37:03Speaker 5: right out of the gate. I was I would dress
- 37:05Speaker 5: a certain way, and deep down inside I know I
- 37:07Speaker 5: always felt uncomfortable. I'm like, well, why do I have
- 37:09Speaker 5: to dress this way? And are you sure that this
- 37:12Speaker 5: V isn't too low? Because I kind of think it's inappropriate. Nah, Nah,
- 37:14Speaker 5: it's great. People think it's great. Like who thinks it's great?
- 37:18Speaker 5: Like the male athlete that I'm interviewing, and now his
- 37:23Speaker 5: eyes are like, you know, like that's not right either? Right?
- 37:27Speaker 5: So like it took some time to break away from
- 37:31Speaker 5: that kind of belief system that in order to feel,
- 37:34Speaker 5: because let's face it, we do. Everyone wants to go
- 37:36Speaker 5: to work looking good. I want to go looking beautiful.
- 37:38Speaker 5: You want to go looking handsome, like we all want
- 37:40Speaker 5: to do that. We all want to go feeling our best.
- 37:43Speaker 5: But what is beautiful? Because I think for women we've
- 37:45Speaker 5: been told it's a certain something which may be more revealing,
- 37:49Speaker 5: maybe a little bit more risque. And again, if you're
- 37:51Speaker 5: a woman who loves to dress that way, you do you, babe,
- 37:53Speaker 5: like you do you. But I just want you to
- 37:56Speaker 5: think a little bit why is that you? And that's
- 37:58Speaker 5: that that you're talking about with the Anne Hathaway because
- 38:00Speaker 5: in that beautiful scene Anne Halfaway, her care character Andy
- 38:05Speaker 5: thinks she's being rebellious by like, you know, rebelling against
- 38:09Speaker 5: the fashion world. And I just love how Streep's character
- 38:13Speaker 5: turns around and says, you're wearing what we picked out
- 38:16Speaker 5: for you years ago and you don't even know it.
- 38:20Speaker 2: That's all. Yeah, yeah, that's right, the cutchhrase, that's all
- 38:23Speaker 2: I know.
- 38:24Speaker 4: I love much.
- 38:25Speaker 1: An example what a good writer, Andy is this is
- 38:27Speaker 1: called the lead. So this's when you're, you know, writing
- 38:29Speaker 1: a chapter, you get a great lead sentence.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Joe Thornton is the.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Reason why I developed an obsession with watching the Maury
- 38:34Speaker 1: Povid Show, and Marty san luis the reason why I
- 38:36Speaker 1: almost broke my ankles.
- 38:37Speaker 2: How about the stories of both.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Those It was just fun stuff. We for two summers
- 38:41Speaker 5: in a row, I got to spend some time with
- 38:43Speaker 5: those two. We actually would shoot hockey us. So the
- 38:46Speaker 5: first year was ball hockey, second year was hockey, and
- 38:49Speaker 5: we just shot instructional videos that were then sold in
- 38:53Speaker 5: Kellogg's boxes, which was hilarious. So the second year, obviously
- 38:57Speaker 5: we knew each other very well. At this point, we're
- 38:59Speaker 5: having some fun and I had the bigger dressing room
- 39:02Speaker 5: as I should get and Jumbo Joe didn't appreciate that,
- 39:07Speaker 5: hence his name jumbo Joe. He's like, I need more space.
- 39:10Speaker 5: So he just took over my room and he just
- 39:13Speaker 5: like he's like, that is now mine, that couch is
- 39:15Speaker 5: now mine. And when I came back from shooting one
- 39:18Speaker 5: of my solo things, you know, there he was. I
- 39:21Speaker 5: thought he was passed out, pretty sure he was snoring,
- 39:24Speaker 5: and I went to change the channel to watch Days
- 39:25Speaker 5: of our Lives because that is my guilty pleasure. Okay,
- 39:29Speaker 5: I like to watch Days of Our Lives. That's the
- 39:30Speaker 5: soap opera I've been watching since I was ten years old.
- 39:32Speaker 5: Shout out to my cousin Jenny, who got me hooked.
- 39:35Speaker 5: And I changed the channel and he woke up right
- 39:37Speaker 5: away and he's like, put it back. I need to
- 39:39Speaker 5: know who the baby daddy is. So what the heck
- 39:42Speaker 5: are you talking about? He was watching more Povich and
- 39:44Speaker 5: he's like, I've been waiting. He goes, I don't care
- 39:47Speaker 5: about the show. He didn't care about the show. He
- 39:49Speaker 5: just wanted to know the end if the guy was
- 39:52Speaker 5: the dad or not the dad. So then we had
- 39:54Speaker 5: to sit there for like the final seven minutes. And
- 39:57Speaker 5: then I got hooked. I'm like, this is drama because
- 40:01Speaker 5: I grew up also watching Jerry Springer.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Okay, okay, and I.
- 40:08Speaker 5: Know I needed to. I'm like, oh my goodness, how
- 40:10Speaker 5: have I not watched Maury after Jerry's Springer starts. So
- 40:16Speaker 5: I got a little hooked on Maury and that was
- 40:18Speaker 5: a ton of fun. And then I mean, Marty Saint
- 40:21Speaker 5: Louis to your point earlier Jason about getting to know
- 40:24Speaker 5: the personalities. So, guys, this guy is a ham like
- 40:27Speaker 5: he loves cracking jokes, he's at he is really funny,
- 40:32Speaker 5: and he was like he was pulling all kinds of
- 40:33Speaker 5: pranks those two summers all the time. And then one
- 40:36Speaker 5: of them was also this video game, I think the
- 40:38Speaker 5: Wii or whatever that you had the handle and I
- 40:40Speaker 5: had never played it before, and he convinced me that
- 40:43Speaker 5: I needed to keep my skates on and run back
- 40:44Speaker 5: and forth to do this one particular tennis thing and
- 40:47Speaker 5: like my ankles are just bending back and forth and
- 40:50Speaker 5: he's just like having a snicker in the corner. Just
- 40:53Speaker 5: thought it was the funniest thing. But like that's the
- 40:55Speaker 5: kind of stuff that he would do all the time.
- 40:57Speaker 5: So great personalities by both those guys, and we had
- 41:01Speaker 5: we had a ton of fun those two summers. So
- 41:03Speaker 5: those are just some of stories that I share too,
- 41:05Speaker 5: because there's like a lot of great guys that you
- 41:07Speaker 5: meet along the way.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Well, you're not the only person that Joe Thornton has,
- 41:11Speaker 3: you know, taken over his TV. He used to come
- 41:13Speaker 3: into my room when we're on the road and literally
- 41:16Speaker 3: take a nap and put on a movie and then
- 41:19Speaker 3: I couldn't change the channel. I have to sit there
- 41:20Speaker 3: in silence. I mean, well, I'm watching the hurt Locker. Now,
- 41:24Speaker 3: I'm watching the hurt Locker.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Now.
- 41:27Speaker 5: That's what he does, and he does it in such
- 41:29Speaker 5: a way where you're like, I don't are you supposed
- 41:32Speaker 5: to be here? Should I be kicking you out?
- 41:35Speaker 2: Life?
- 41:35Speaker 4: His whole life, his whole life.
- 41:36Speaker 3: He lives in the middle, like in this middle purgatory
- 41:38Speaker 3: where we're like, should I say something?
- 41:40Speaker 4: Should I not? I'm like, it's jump and everybody just goes, well,
- 41:42Speaker 4: that's jumbo.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:44Speaker 1: He's probably the most heartbreaking chapter, and he's about Wade
- 41:47Speaker 1: Blac because what I thought was really interesting is you
- 41:49Speaker 1: not only wrote about what happened away, but your personal
- 41:52Speaker 1: connection to that and the guilt that sometimes people can
- 41:55Speaker 1: deal with when someone even not as I say, close
- 41:57Speaker 1: to them, someone that they know from their acquaintance with,
- 41:59Speaker 1: ends up taking their lives.
- 42:00Speaker 2: How tough was that to go through?
- 42:02Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, you know I still live a little
- 42:05Speaker 5: bit with the guilt of it. I'd be Wade became
- 42:07Speaker 5: like a good friend right away. Again another thing, Jason,
- 42:11Speaker 5: I mean, he's just awesome people, and it was really
- 42:13Speaker 5: important for me to share that mostly because I wanted
- 42:15Speaker 5: people to know that Wade was awesome, Like he was
- 42:17Speaker 5: just an awesome guy. And in an industry again where
- 42:23Speaker 5: even the players themselves sometimes would be nervous talking to
- 42:28Speaker 5: a female reporter on their own because it's like a
- 42:32Speaker 5: it could be like a high school hallway sometimes, right,
- 42:35Speaker 5: like they don't want their teammates teasing them like ooh,
- 42:37Speaker 5: you were talking to Andy for a little while. They're
- 42:40Speaker 5: all was going on, right, So sometimes that childishnesss can
- 42:44Speaker 5: seep into a room. Wade didn't care. He's like, if
- 42:47Speaker 5: I like you, I'm going to talk to you. A
- 42:49Speaker 5: couple times on the road where I would be walking
- 42:52Speaker 5: back to the hotel on my own because the rest
- 42:54Speaker 5: of the media would decide to stay out after dinner,
- 42:57Speaker 5: like I'm walking, you know, it's nighttime, and Wade would
- 43:00Speaker 5: see me and he's like, I'm walking you back to
- 43:02Speaker 5: the hotel room or not a hotel room, but a
- 43:03Speaker 5: hotel And he's and I'm like, why would you do this?
- 43:06Speaker 5: Like people might think. So He's like, I don't care.
- 43:09Speaker 5: You are a woman by yourself on the road, by
- 43:13Speaker 5: the way, now you're walking back to the hotel at night,
- 43:17Speaker 5: Like if anyone had seen one of my daughters doing this,
- 43:21Speaker 5: they better escort them back, because if anything were to
- 43:23Speaker 5: ever happen to them, I would, you know, I'd be
- 43:25Speaker 5: pissed at them. And He's like, and if anything would
- 43:27Speaker 5: ever happen to you, and I saw you walking like,
- 43:31Speaker 5: I need to be a gentleman like he was. That's
- 43:33Speaker 5: what he was. He was an absolute gentleman. He would
- 43:35Speaker 5: clean off my car when we would come back from
- 43:37Speaker 5: road trips because I traveled with the team, so we'd land,
- 43:41Speaker 5: there'd be a snowstorm, everyone's car is covered in snow,
- 43:45Speaker 5: and he would just completely wipe my car off for me,
- 43:48Speaker 5: right like, just things like that. Chivalry was not dead
- 43:51Speaker 5: with Wade b. Lack Right. He was a wonderful human
- 43:54Speaker 5: being in that sense. And then right up until the
- 43:56Speaker 5: last second where he retired. I even introduced him to
- 44:00Speaker 5: an agent I was working with at the time to
- 44:02Speaker 5: get him into broadcasting, to help him out with that.
- 44:05Speaker 5: And then he wanted to return the favor when I
- 44:07Speaker 5: was trying to get my job with Hockey Night in
- 44:09Speaker 5: Canada and he was with Battle of the Blades. So
- 44:11Speaker 5: that was that night where he was trying to get
- 44:13Speaker 5: me to go out. He was with a bunch of
- 44:14Speaker 5: CBC people and he's like, I really want you to
- 44:16Speaker 5: come out meet these people FaceTime. FaceTime never hurts, right,
- 44:19Speaker 5: Like that's what he wanted. And I just kept saying
- 44:22Speaker 5: I was too tired, I was too busy, I was
- 44:23Speaker 5: too tired. And then that was really the last Those
- 44:25Speaker 5: are the last words that I ever spoke to him.
- 44:28Speaker 5: And then the next day is when all the news
- 44:30Speaker 5: started to break and it was just like I think
- 44:33Speaker 5: and I said, like I write this in the book
- 44:34Speaker 5: where you're just in shock, because we were supposed to
- 44:36Speaker 5: have lunch that day, and I texted him and I'm like,
- 44:41Speaker 5: people are saying you're dead, Like is that true? Like
- 44:43Speaker 5: it was just a text because I don't know what
- 44:45Speaker 5: to say. I'm like, oh my god, all these people
- 44:47Speaker 5: are saying you're dead. What's up with that? Lol? Like hey,
- 44:49Speaker 5: where are you?
- 44:50Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 44:51Speaker 5: And then no response and I just went, oh, no,
- 44:53Speaker 5: like I think this is real, and yeah it was.
- 44:55Speaker 5: It was a really tough time. My grandfather had been ill,
- 44:58Speaker 5: hence why I was tired and couldn't go out with
- 45:00Speaker 5: him the night before. But you know, Wade Wade was
- 45:03Speaker 5: good people, and I want I want everyone to know that.
- 45:08Speaker 5: You know, I'm sure, as you know, his family obviously
- 45:11Speaker 5: knew how amazing he was. But I if they read
- 45:13Speaker 5: that chapter, if they read my book, you know, if
- 45:15Speaker 5: his daughters end up reading it, you know, I hope
- 45:18Speaker 5: they get another like appreciation for how like you know,
- 45:21Speaker 5: their father touched people in the industry as well, like
- 45:25Speaker 5: he was just salt of the earth human being. Uh.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Last one for me, when you wrote the book we
- 45:31Speaker 1: were talking about in Winnipeg, he said, no, there's some
- 45:33Speaker 1: stuff in there, some personal stuff that I disclosed, haven't
- 45:35Speaker 1: talked about. And I thought this was really brave of
- 45:37Speaker 1: you because I have a couple of nieces who I thought.
- 45:39Speaker 1: But immediately when you talked about how some women avoid
- 45:42Speaker 1: playing sports when they're younger because what happens, and you said,
- 45:44Speaker 1: menstruating at the age of ten, you know you don't
- 45:47Speaker 1: understand what comes with that. You're wearing white pants, you
- 45:49Speaker 1: gotta wear this that like some women will forever not
- 45:51Speaker 1: play sports. I thought that was very courageous and brave
- 45:54Speaker 1: of you to mention did you worry about disclosing that
- 45:57Speaker 1: specific incident?
- 45:59Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sure my mom, you know, she's like, why
- 46:01Speaker 5: did you have to share part the deaths whatever, mom.
- 46:06Speaker 5: But I think it's I do think it's important because yes,
- 46:09Speaker 5: I'm actually one of the young ones. I was ten
- 46:11Speaker 5: fricking years old when that happened. And there are a
- 46:14Speaker 5: lot of girls like typically whatever, like thirteen fourteen, so
- 46:17Speaker 5: they're all and I guess, you know, maybe it's kind
- 46:20Speaker 5: of funny because when I think about it, maybe it's
- 46:22Speaker 5: the fact that I got it so early. I already
- 46:24Speaker 5: joined sports, like knowing how to deal with that, where
- 46:28Speaker 5: some girls they're like thirteen fourteen, fifteen, so they've been
- 46:31Speaker 5: in sports for a few years. Then you know, their
- 46:34Speaker 5: body changes and it's like uh oh, and they don't
- 46:36Speaker 5: know how to adjust. They get nervous, they get scared,
- 46:39Speaker 5: they get embarrassed. But I did, you know, I'm happy
- 46:42Speaker 5: I wrote it because when I was writing that sort
- 46:44Speaker 5: like the amount of women who reached out to me,
- 46:45Speaker 5: even like national team players, and I write it like
- 46:48Speaker 5: one in the book, former national team player reached out
- 46:50Speaker 5: and she's like, you know, Canada makes the Olympics in
- 46:54Speaker 5: soccer two thousand and eight for the first time. She's like,
- 46:57Speaker 5: we are over the moon, We're representing our country. We're
- 46:59Speaker 5: at the freaking Olympics. Man. She goes and I get
- 47:03Speaker 5: my period the night before our very first game, and
- 47:05Speaker 5: what kits to Canada choose to wear the white ones.
- 47:08Speaker 5: So she's like and this is like, these are things
- 47:10Speaker 5: that female athletes have to worry about. So she's like,
- 47:12Speaker 5: here I am playing in front of millions and now
- 47:15Speaker 5: I got to worry, Like, I hope I don't have
- 47:17Speaker 5: an accident. And I know it's worth talking about because
- 47:20Speaker 5: many leagues have now banned white shorts, and they've done
- 47:25Speaker 5: that in the NWSL, they've done it in the Women's
- 47:27Speaker 5: Soccer League. Over in Europe as well, they're starting to
- 47:30Speaker 5: ban them because they realize the amount of stress that
- 47:33Speaker 5: it caused. I mean, everyday women are you go to work,
- 47:36Speaker 5: you know, you're always like worried, Like it's just things
- 47:39Speaker 5: like that, Like that is something that causes stress. Hello,
- 47:41Speaker 5: figure it out. And now, if you're an athlete that's
- 47:44Speaker 5: got to perform on the highest level, that can cause
- 47:46Speaker 5: stress if you're wearing certain colors. And then when you're
- 47:48Speaker 5: young and not everyone's going through it, there's an embarrassment factor.
- 47:53Speaker 5: And when I brought that up that day, I know
- 47:55Speaker 5: I could tell people because again, everyone's always uncomfortable talking
- 47:58Speaker 5: about what the body does. But then they all came
- 48:00Speaker 5: up to me privately and they went, you're so right,
- 48:03Speaker 5: this happen, and then they start to share their stories.
- 48:05Speaker 5: So that's why I'm like, I'm going to include that,
- 48:08Speaker 5: even though my mom will probably be like, you don't
- 48:09Speaker 5: need to prett Yes, I did, Mom, because it opens
- 48:14Speaker 5: a conversation for other women to say, you're right, and
- 48:18Speaker 5: it'll remind some women that there are young girls out
- 48:21Speaker 5: there where if they start to act a certain wad
- 48:24Speaker 5: be like, hey, are you like, is there something you
- 48:25Speaker 5: want to talk about? Maybe it's this, And that's okay
- 48:28Speaker 5: because it's very normal that the body is going to
- 48:30Speaker 5: go through that. Let's talk about it and let's figure
- 48:33Speaker 5: out how you can deal with it and still be
- 48:35Speaker 5: able to play sports and not feel embarrassed by it.
- 48:39Speaker 3: For sure, it's andy, you know, for me lastly, you know,
- 48:44Speaker 3: playing hockey and being a professional athlete and now myself,
- 48:47Speaker 3: you know, being in the broadcasting world. I'm so amazed
- 48:49Speaker 3: at you know, working with hosts that are so good
- 48:53Speaker 3: at you know, dictating traffic. You know, I always tell
- 48:56Speaker 3: people that ask me, you know, how is it how
- 48:57Speaker 3: hard is it.
- 48:58Speaker 4: I'm like, it's it.
- 49:00Speaker 3: It's nothing compared to the hosts that have somebody in
- 49:02Speaker 3: their ear that are giving them traffic constantly in your life,
- 49:04Speaker 3: like an air traffic controller shout out the government shutdown.
- 49:10Speaker 4: But it's it's literally so difficult.
- 49:13Speaker 3: It's so hard, you know, to do, and I have
- 49:15Speaker 3: so much respect but for you, like, is there a
- 49:18Speaker 3: favorite moment of yours where like you're live on air
- 49:20Speaker 3: and something just kind of went wrong and you had
- 49:23Speaker 3: to think on your feet U.
- 49:26Speaker 5: Oh my goodness. So many times so I call the
- 49:30Speaker 5: producers are the mothership and if we lose, and I knows,
- 49:34Speaker 5: if you lose contact with the mothership, then you're pitched, man.
- 49:38Speaker 5: But if you can still have contact with them and
- 49:41Speaker 5: navigate through audio issues, video issue, anything like that, you
- 49:46Speaker 5: can get through anything. But I've had moments for sure
- 49:50Speaker 5: where oh my goodness, like, so here's a good one,
- 49:54Speaker 5: though not necessarily something went wrong, but I share this too.
- 49:57Speaker 5: So the Pan American Games ended up being a huge
- 50:00Speaker 5: success twenty fifteen, they were in Toronto. It always turned
- 50:03Speaker 5: into Nobody's gonna watch. We ended up having to expand
- 50:06Speaker 5: the hours of our show because so many people were
- 50:08Speaker 5: watching and the baseball team, the Canadian baseball team was
- 50:11Speaker 5: doing so well, and we had like literally a minute
- 50:15Speaker 5: left in the show. But the producers like, we have
- 50:17Speaker 5: to get these highlights in. And these are not MLB players, right,
- 50:21Speaker 5: so it's not like you know these names. And there's
- 50:23Speaker 5: not a great graphics either. But he's like, Andy, we
- 50:26Speaker 5: have zero time to show you these highlights, and we
- 50:30Speaker 5: have no commercial break to show them to you. He's like,
- 50:32Speaker 5: and I don't even have a writer who can get
- 50:34Speaker 5: you these highlights. I Am going to read you the
- 50:37Speaker 5: highlight in your ear and you are going to have
- 50:40Speaker 5: to say what I say. And I said, oh dear god,
- 50:42Speaker 5: this is going to be a Ron Burgundy moment. I'm like,
- 50:44Speaker 5: do not order a sandwich in the middle of reading meetings,
- 50:48Speaker 5: because I will say it right. So that was like
- 50:52Speaker 5: here we go, like he's like, all right, figure it out,
- 50:54Speaker 5: get your brain, you know, whatever level because we've got
- 50:57Speaker 5: twenty seconds here. And then he just said, all right,
- 51:00Speaker 5: coming up to home plate is so and so you know,
- 51:02Speaker 5: he's two for two on the tien. I'm coming up
- 51:04Speaker 5: to hope his own zone is two for two on
- 51:06Speaker 5: the day. And literally just like doing the highlights that
- 51:09Speaker 5: way and I'm looking at them for the very first time,
- 51:12Speaker 5: and uh, it was it was wild. It was crazy,
- 51:14Speaker 5: but we ended up doing that and got through it.
- 51:17Speaker 5: So yeah, like you're you're learning to be present, like
- 51:19Speaker 5: entertaining on air while listening to what somebody's saying here
- 51:23Speaker 5: and then presenting it to the to the viewers. Like
- 51:26Speaker 5: it's crazy. What what goes on in our ear is
- 51:28Speaker 5: complete and absolute chaos, chaos, and then what comes out
- 51:33Speaker 5: you hope is not.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:34Speaker 3: The first the first sight of the first set of
- 51:37Speaker 3: Coast to Coast we did the first season was like
- 51:40Speaker 3: they somebody accidentally pressed the button you just hear in
- 51:42Speaker 3: the bag.
- 51:44Speaker 4: We're like, I don't me you and p K, We're
- 51:47Speaker 4: like Jesus.
- 51:48Speaker 2: You know what.
- 51:49Speaker 5: Like shout out to producers because they keep a lot
- 51:52Speaker 5: out of our ears, right, Like they speak to us
- 51:55Speaker 5: with just what we need to know. But sometimes once
- 51:57Speaker 5: in a while they'll leave their key open a little
- 51:59Speaker 5: too long and I'm just like, are people being murdered
- 52:02Speaker 5: in that room? What is happening? Right? Those poor people?
- 52:07Speaker 5: But Coast to Coast is wild because I'll have a
- 52:10Speaker 5: producer talking to me, then a director also letting you
- 52:14Speaker 5: know what the camrangles or what's going to be shown.
- 52:17Speaker 5: And then we love our stats people because they're the
- 52:20Speaker 5: ones who make us look like geniuses. Then they're all
- 52:22Speaker 5: tru heed you stuff at the same time, like there
- 52:24Speaker 5: are three voices. My husband makes fun of me because
- 52:27Speaker 5: we'll be in a crowded restaurant and we'll be having,
- 52:30Speaker 5: you know, a lovely dinner, and then I hear everything
- 52:33Speaker 5: he says. Then I'll be like, oh my god, they're
- 52:35Speaker 5: breaking up on that table over there, and He's like,
- 52:37Speaker 5: how the hell do you know that. I'm like, I'm
- 52:39Speaker 5: listening to you, and I'm listening to them.
- 52:41Speaker 4: I know exactly how to do that because you hear everything.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Now you become superman.
- 52:46Speaker 5: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 52:47Speaker 4: So it's too much noise.
- 52:48Speaker 1: The producers and the researchers just honestly doing God's work
- 52:51Speaker 1: out there first. There's no question about The book is
- 52:53Speaker 1: called Just call Me Andy, Sports Story Smith, trail Blazer,
- 52:56Speaker 1: Andy Patrol's book is available wherever you get your books,
- 52:58Speaker 1: So go ahead, run to Amazon, Indigo, wherever it may be.
- 53:01Speaker 1: And last thought, shout up to the fact that you
- 53:03Speaker 1: are a GOALIEUG six five two thirty John Conway, your
- 53:07Speaker 1: lovely husband, the pride of Philadelphia. I got to meet
- 53:09Speaker 1: Sunday huge Eagles guys. Well, that was one of my
- 53:11Speaker 1: favorite chapters. A rare time you cries when John finally
- 53:14Speaker 1: got to be a champion as well.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Very very cool.
- 53:16Speaker 5: Yeah, that was that was emotional because you know the journey,
- 53:18Speaker 5: like personally, you know the journey. So he is. But
- 53:21Speaker 5: I always tell him my first goalie love you like
- 53:25Speaker 5: the cat, the cat Felix Popman. He knows it. Johnny
- 53:29Speaker 5: knows it, he accepts it, he gets it. That's my
- 53:32Speaker 5: first love right there, goalie love. And but then you
- 53:37Speaker 5: know John, John's the lasting love. How about that?
- 53:41Speaker 3: I can make you cry again if you want. I'll
- 53:43Speaker 3: see you on Coast to Coast with Tyson ash on
- 53:45Speaker 3: this Thursday.
- 53:47Speaker 4: I'm so excited.
- 53:49Speaker 5: Joy God, I know between what he dresses, like what
- 53:53Speaker 5: he wears, and what you wear, we should be putting
- 53:56Speaker 5: the show on at one am instead, because that means
- 53:58Speaker 5: that should be Yeah, talk about my television viewing exactly.
- 54:03Speaker 4: I got something. I got a special outfit for Thursday.
- 54:07Speaker 5: So you like it, Okay, I can't wait.
- 54:09Speaker 4: Suspense amazing stuff.
- 54:10Speaker 6: Congratulations, thanks guys, all right, great stuff there to Andy
- 54:21Speaker 6: Patrol again.
- 54:22Speaker 1: You'll see Andy wid Jason Version Coast to Coast and
- 54:24Speaker 1: Amazon Prime on Thursday Long with Tyson Nash, Cinephile and sixty.
- 54:28Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil it for JD and Tel.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I just want them to watch mob Land on Paramount Plus.
- 54:32Speaker 1: If you like mob stories, you'll enjoy this. Yeah, you're
- 54:36Speaker 1: gonna enjoy Tom Hardy, Pierce Bras and Helen Mirren. No
- 54:39Speaker 1: spoilers here, ten episodes. You boys are gonna enjoy it.
- 54:42Speaker 1: You like your gangsters, like your tough guys, and a
- 54:44Speaker 1: lot of use to the sea word.
- 54:45Speaker 2: And that's my question to both of you. Tell I'll
- 54:47Speaker 2: go with you.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Why is it in all these British shows, gangster shows,
- 54:50Speaker 1: sexy beast, whatever it may be. What is this fascination
- 54:53Speaker 1: with the seaword? If you use the seaword in America,
- 54:55Speaker 1: can't be like you can't say that. See you next Tuesday.
- 54:59Speaker 1: In England they use it like saying the word water.
- 55:01Speaker 1: It's just constantly being thrown out there. If you notice
- 55:03Speaker 1: that when it comes.
- 55:04Speaker 7: The Brits, they do, Guy Richie, My understanding is it's
- 55:09Speaker 7: it's more of a colloquialism.
- 55:11Speaker 4: In the UK. It's it doesn't have it's not as.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Loaded, you know, it's not as loaded as a word.
- 55:17Speaker 7: It's like, you know, if I called you a dick,
- 55:20Speaker 7: you know, it's like it's it's like it's not an
- 55:23Speaker 7: endearing term, but it's not you know, we're not going
- 55:25Speaker 7: to cover our kids ears necessarily if one of those,
- 55:27Speaker 7: you know, and that's that's that's what it is, which
- 55:30Speaker 7: is why it's so much fun to see, like maybe
- 55:32Speaker 7: someone who's not as familiar with British culture watching you know,
- 55:35Speaker 7: a Guy Ritchie movie or something like that for the
- 55:37Speaker 7: first time, like, oh my god, what was this?
- 55:40Speaker 4: You know, So it's just it's a you could barely
- 55:42Speaker 4: understand half the words. There's a great SNL speech with
- 55:47Speaker 4: Bill Hayter and Fred Arni. Yeah, I I was wondering
- 55:51Speaker 4: if be picked that up.
- 55:53Speaker 2: It is.
- 55:56Speaker 1: God hey, because normally I'm anti subtitles if they're speaking
- 56:00Speaker 1: English when it comes to this Moblin look o bet
- 56:02Speaker 1: those subtitles on. I have no idea what these guys
- 56:04Speaker 1: are saying. Just cocked the accents their mo put in
- 56:06Speaker 1: a pinch.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I have no idea what they're saying right now.
- 56:10Speaker 4: And now it's English.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Check it out.
- 56:13Speaker 3: I love don't you? Don't you love that? Towl comes on.
- 56:15Speaker 3: First words of the show is an eighteen syllable word.
- 56:21Speaker 3: Make us feel make us feel stupid?
- 56:23Speaker 2: No, listen to is a writer. We appreciate it.
- 56:26Speaker 4: He's smart. Man.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Quick thought here just in the jase, I mean that
- 56:28Speaker 1: that is a heartbreaking, last Jady, you can three to
- 56:31Speaker 1: two and then lose six and seven at home, and
- 56:34Speaker 1: you were three outs away from the wind, two outs
- 56:36Speaker 1: away from the wim RoHS.
- 56:37Speaker 2: HiT's the home run of the ninth.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Fans and numerous wers in hockey were watching, including Kings
- 56:41Speaker 1: fans at Crypto dot com arena they watched, and Guerrero
- 56:44Speaker 1: even where Marie Felipe Team Canada Jersey as he entered
- 56:48Speaker 1: Rogers Center before Game seven. I'm sure you've had a
- 56:50Speaker 1: lot of tough losses in your career. That's about as
- 56:52Speaker 1: brutal as it gets for the Blue Jays.
- 56:54Speaker 3: Uh, quickly, you know, I'll make it funny before diving
- 56:58Speaker 3: into mind, But quickly, how relieved do you think the
- 57:03Speaker 3: maple leafs are?
- 57:04Speaker 4: Oh my god, how relief do you think the main
- 57:08Speaker 4: plates are?
- 57:09Speaker 2: Not to you know, not to the lot, but if
- 57:12Speaker 2: these guys would have won.
- 57:13Speaker 1: You go, all right, well the blue Jays winning that,
- 57:15Speaker 1: that gives us a few months, Like I'm not kidding.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Before the Amazon Showman's like, all right now the season begins,
- 57:21Speaker 1: like everyone's just been kind of falling the blue Jays.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Now people are gonna start watching Leaves when they were
- 57:24Speaker 1: down three to nothing after four.
- 57:26Speaker 2: This team sucks. Leaves aren't gonna make the playoffs.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Like now the attention is there, So you're right, if
- 57:30Speaker 1: the Jason won, that would have given them a reprieve
- 57:32Speaker 1: two more months.
- 57:33Speaker 2: All good?
- 57:34Speaker 3: No, no, no, I I was saying they were relieved
- 57:36Speaker 3: that the Blue Jays lost because they would have had
- 57:41Speaker 3: to deal with they were the last one to win
- 57:44Speaker 3: while it's been a while they won Joe Carter Holmer.
- 57:47Speaker 3: But yeah, it's except But I'm just like kind of
- 57:50Speaker 3: like I was, like, are they.
- 57:51Speaker 4: Kind of hoping they lose? Like they want them to win?
- 57:55Speaker 4: But they wouldn't be mad.
- 57:56Speaker 3: I mean, how how about those two I mean the
- 58:00Speaker 3: those two games, the amount of chances they had to
- 58:02Speaker 3: win and things that just went it against him, Like
- 58:05Speaker 3: obviously I don't know his name, but he was the
- 58:07Speaker 3: base runner that yet, Yeah, that got thrown out. I
- 58:10Speaker 3: mean no leadoff. He didn't have a secondary leadoff at all.
- 58:14Speaker 3: He did not have that whatsoever. He didn't leave when
- 58:18Speaker 3: the ball was thrown. He didn't start running. It was
- 58:21Speaker 3: crazy to me that he was thrown out at home.
- 58:25Speaker 3: And then obviously that Pages comes in and makes that
- 58:29Speaker 3: Andy po with the catch of the ages inside catch barries.
- 58:32Speaker 3: His teammate says, I'm the says I'm the captain, now
- 58:36Speaker 3: knocks him out, celebrates before looking back. But yeah, congratulations
- 58:40Speaker 3: of the Dodgers. Yeah, game seven loss. I was part
- 58:43Speaker 3: of one of only four instances in NHL history where
- 58:47Speaker 3: reverse sweep.
- 58:48Speaker 5: Wow.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Yeah, it was one of the hardest things that I
- 58:51Speaker 3: have to talk I got to talk about once a
- 58:52Speaker 3: year like it's fucking awful.
- 58:55Speaker 4: It's uh.
- 58:55Speaker 3: We were and LA went on La went on to
- 58:58Speaker 3: win the Cup that year. So it is that two
- 59:01Speaker 3: thousand and fourteen Stanley Cup, La Kings. We were up
- 59:05Speaker 3: three nothing, three nothing, and they just just reverse swept
- 59:09Speaker 3: us the old the old pants around our ankle, pants
- 59:12Speaker 3: around our ankles, just bent over taking it, taking it
- 59:18Speaker 3: up the tailpipe just by the La Kings.
- 59:21Speaker 5: Uh.
- 59:22Speaker 3: And I got to hear about it because I'm good
- 59:23Speaker 3: friends with Brad Richardson, so uh, I you know, and
- 59:26Speaker 3: I see Jared Stole around a lot, and maybe Ray
- 59:29Speaker 3: Richardson was on that team, but I always hear that
- 59:31Speaker 3: every time I talk to Jared still or anything. It's like,
- 59:33Speaker 3: you can't even bring it up with somebody, Oh, did
- 59:35Speaker 3: you guys win? And it's like, no, they won though,
- 59:39Speaker 3: and they reverse swept us, So it was tough. It
- 59:42Speaker 3: was tough, tough, tough sledge. So thanks for bringing that.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Up, though, why I want to see on the more
- 59:50Speaker 1: upbeat note, Halloween, your wife Gillian Muller killed it. Follow
- 59:54Speaker 1: her on social media. As I do, dressing up, you
- 59:56Speaker 1: guys do the tandem together you for those who miss
- 59:58Speaker 1: last week's episode, wasn't sure, but Asian appropriation, I think
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: you're okay dressed up as a character.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: From what she loved that she that by the way,
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: she's by the way, I don't like to give you props,
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: but she was like, she's like, oh, that was such
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: a good I can't remember the line you said, but
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: she was like dying laughing.
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: She's like, that was really good, and that's good.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: I'm glad she was listening. I'll give it back to her.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: That was the costume of the ear quite franky dressing
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: up is Amy Madigan who might win an oscar Tal
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: has now actually seen Weapons Tal, you can appreciate not
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: only Jill's work honoring her, but also her performance when
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: she shows up in the movie.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Like what the epp is this old lady all about? Unbelievable?
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: It takes a turn. The film takes a turn when
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Amy Madigan shows up.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: That is for sure, isn't it weird? Like you don't
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: know what's going on? And then I mean she is
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: so creepy. Oh go watch Weapons though great By the way,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: yes that's correct. Meanwhile, if anybody has seen the video
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: and you see her on TikTok or I think she
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: might have posted on Instagram of like it's husband abuse
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: because I put through the ringer come Halloween for a
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: fucking two weeks straight of getting content coming up with it,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: and half the time she's like, she'll start like, no joke.
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: She will start in about a month, she'll be like,
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: what are we doing for Halloween next year?
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Now? Big?
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: What She's like, we gotta start coming up with ideas
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: and she's and I'll have the ideas written out and
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: then every month, we got to figure out what we're
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: doing for Halloween. Gotta figure out what we're doing for Halloween.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: It is her favorite holiday. I like this, she takes
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: it list.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: It's her favorite. It's her favorite one.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: Like that she buys like she goes to like home Goods,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: and when they put out the like Halloween decor, like
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: the cups and stuff, and she goes bananas for it.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: She's a psychopath. That's fine, much like Amy back in
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: a weapons Yes.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: In terms of costumes, I love Nick Flinel going.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: It's just doppelganger Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni Connor Badar
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Frank Naser one is Thing one and two. Avalanche mascot
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Bernie Dress is called out of defense from Brent Burns.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: But how about the Kraken, the Tire Roster, and some.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Of their significant others dressed as their favorite Adam Saylor
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: characters before the Sandman himself came to meet with him
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: in their dressing room following his performance in the City.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Bravo to the Kraken off to a great start and
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: loving Adam Sandler.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it was pretty cool he shows up. I mean
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: my favorite one was there's a guy there's I can't
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: remember that. I don't know the player, but he went
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: as he never he didn't post anything on his own
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: personal socials, but he ended up they caught a team
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: picture and he went his Trump and people would like
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: people are going ballistic and like trying to like people
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: like zooming in on the picture and I can't remember
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: who it was, and I wish I knew, but like,
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: you know, I can't put him on blast. But I mean, ever,
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: you could dress dress, dress up whatever you want for Halloween.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: I don't give it.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: People take it way too seriously at times of like
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: I can't do this, you can't do just stress. You know,
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: if you're in your group, obviously be careful what you're
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: posting on social media because once you do that, you're
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: in the public eye.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: But yeah, he was like tucked in the back.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: But somebody like saw the make America Great hat again
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: and we're like lost their mind.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: They whatckey players do?
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I'm like, come on, it's like, well there's about four
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: or five Happy Gil wars with Seattle and maybe Ben
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: ears as Sohan.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Okay, I like how you moved that? You move that along?
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Adam Sandler, Yeah, my favorite Adam Sandler. Okay, we'll
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: keep it PC for you because jeesuise.
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: My favorite is Don't Mess With It's the best.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: One of the best underrated Adam Sandler movies is Don't
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Mess with the Zohan. It's me Sohan Fizzy but bler Phizzy,
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: but bler I I walk around the house. Yeah yeah, that,
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: don't mess with the Zohan. I love the ode to
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: fifty First Dates. The guy uh not Drew Barrymore, the
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: brother Sean Sean Aston, Shawn Aston with the mess he
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: had the mess shirt on.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Brandon Montour is the brother?
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Tell us yeah, yes, Brandon, answer is the brother? That
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: was my That was the good the sneaky one. I
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: liked some of the undercover ones a lot, So it's
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: like that because you don't want to go like I'd
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: probably would do either domess with the Zohunter or I
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: do like Little Nikki.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: I think Little Nicky is another one.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: I know that people poo poo on it, but I
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: think it's a stupid, stupid funny. But that's what Adam
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: Sandler does. You'd make stupid funny movies that you can
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: watch in the background. And he tries to touch on
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: the Nostalgia Bone. So good job by the Seattle Crack
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: and I'd say they win Halloween.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: No, I think so two things.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: A fantastic job and so even Sandler's character is in
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: SNL opera Man Cajun Mandlo's options as well. You could
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: dress up as well, all right, Thanks for checking out
