- 0:00SPEAKER_01: So we get in this thing, and Marcus, we're in a boiler room for hours where they're just, they won't let us leave.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: I've said no so many times.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: I had their little breakfast, I did the tour, we went up there, we heard it out.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: I told them, you know, I appreciate you, but I just can't do that right now.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: And you know the kind of money we were making when I got married.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: You don't, you don't want me, dude.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not your guy, but all they're trying to do is to get you to sign your life away, and I wouldn't do it.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: And they're bringing in the closer and then the closer's boss.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I hear them arguing, getting mad at each other for not closing in like in the next room.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: So finally, Amy and I, we stand up and we've already I've got my voucher in my hand for my money, my blanket, and my tequila.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: We stand up and we just start walking to the exit, and the guy's like, Whoa, where are you?
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Where are you going?
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Where are you going?
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: And I just keep walking.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And it was so awkward.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And we walked all the way down, went down the elevator, came out the front door, and I see the little voucher office.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm all, well, I'm already here.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: For giggles, let's go in and see what happens.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And I walk in, and the lady's, you know, she greets me, I hand her over the thing, she looks at it, she walks in the back room, starts whispering with a guy.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is not gonna end well.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: They walk back in, she pulls open a drawer, counts me out$200, slides over a bottle of tequila, and pulls out this nasty looking Mexican blanket and just and I just took my cash, shoved it in my pocket, threw my blanket under my arm, grabbed my tequila, and we just stormed out.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: And right then our cab pulled up in and gone.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I will never, ever go to a timeshare again.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: And number two, I can't believe they just paid me$200.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Down there in Eugene, as we do the PNW Podcast three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And you can check out all episodes at the PNW podcast.com.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: You can get caught up, or you just kind of can, you know, meander yourself around.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: And while there is stuff where we touch on sports in real time, a lot of stories are evergreen, and you can find something at all times.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Of course, I'm at the Stafford Hills Club where I do all the episodes.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: It is they just uh did all the repairs on the saltwater pool here, Marcus, and I saw him swimming around in there, getting the whole thing dialed in.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: You know, here in the uh lower 48, we empty the pools every couple of years to do maintenance, to have everything up and running.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: It's not like when you go on vacation in Mexico.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Have you ever seen that where the guy is like snorkeling around underwater while you're at the pool, fix- I mean, they're actually like spackling and re-attaching tiles in and they don't go in in like a scuba suit or a swim trunks.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: They're like in jeans and a shirt, fully submerged in the water, fixing things.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: It's a different look.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: I I have seen it and it it blew my mind the first time I saw it, and the juxtaposition of the guy in the jeans at the bottom of the pool with the spackle, and then I looked up at the top of the resort, and there was guys in jeans up there spackling the side, and I thought, can we just get these guys like some shorts?
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can I imagine some cargo shorts would probably be nice if you're up there on the roof.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: You pack your things around.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Maybe the cargo shorts are a little easier to submerge than the jeans or easier to return to the surface.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know, Drew, but the uniforms had me a little perplexed.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's one of those things where you have to give it respect because they understand that you can't just have your legs and your arms and your face out in the sun all the time when you're just having it cook down on you.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: But it's not lost on me what happens if you wear jeans and sweat your ass off all the time.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: You're gonna end up with monkey butt or what I like to call festival butt, where you get like that chafe burning down in the Netherlands where there's no way back from it until you like remove the jeans and either like ointment or just give yourself a chance to dry out.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, they must put up.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, and I'm sure they're calloused.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they've got uh they've got a more of a battle butt than me.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've got areas down there that are as soft as the day I was born.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And they are sensitive.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Well, I'll tell you, uh, nature's baby powder is just dirt, Drew.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: And so you get callous down there really quick if you're out working a job like that, that's a little bit more manual labor and in the elements.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: So uh listen, they're they're way stronger men than I will ever be.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: I uh you wouldn't catch me up there in uh a thousand years on the top of a roof with the way that that heat was in Mexico.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And I did, I felt bad for him because they all had the full head wraps on just to protect themselves from the sun.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: And meanwhile, I'm the whitest guy you've ever seen.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: I walk out in the sun like it's nothing.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: I spend, you know, 45 minutes and then I'm back in my air conditioned room, like so spoiled at those places.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: But uh, if it weren't for those guys working hard in jeans all day, every day, we wouldn't get to enjoy those spots.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: So yeah, and and before I get to this point, we are at the Stafford Hills Club, and you can check them out, StaffordHills.com.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation, but back to Mexico for a second.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And when someone from the Pacific Northwest goes to Mexico, you know, you feel like you're in a totally different world.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And Amy and I went to, we rarely get to go to like an adults-only resort.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Um, but we talked my parents into watching all my kids, and we went down there a few years back, and we were down at the pool, and they were building an epic resort next door to the pool.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And the construction code in Mexico is nothing short of concerning.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're talking about these guys are working off the edge of these concrete cliffs, you know, because they're all built to be sexy, but there's no railing.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: There is no joke, like a flimsy rope that is just like strung up like it's to channel people through a theater popcorn line.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Like it could not, like, if you if you tried to save yourself with it with it, you would die.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: I think it's just there for like some sort of mental aspect, but I'm sitting over here in full-on cabana mode in my party shorts, like complaining that my pina colada is melting too fast, and these guys are putting in work.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: And I think it's something to keep in mind if you go to these resorts, and and it goes all the way down to your weight staff.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And I always respect the people who are doing the hard labor wherever I go because I know what that entails, and it doesn't always come at the greatest wage, especially in Mexico.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: And there you will see this.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: If you go to an all-inclusive and you tip even a couple bucks per meal, they are so appreciative because so many people are just punting on that idea all the time.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I already paid X number of dollars to be here.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Well, that's everything in your life, sir.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: And service is something that we pay for.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: And I've gotten in arguments with people who I've watched sit next to us and just demand, demand, demand, demand for a week and never tip a dollar to someone who's maybe making two bucks an hour for their entire family.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: So I always urge people just bring a wad of ones.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I'm not asking you to start dropping Northwest tips.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Like the way we tip here is we'll give you vertigo, but I'm talking about just having peeling a couple of Washingtons off.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: It's it's not that big of a deal.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And as an American, you should be more than used to it at this point in time.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: In fact, much like you're saying, it feels like a little bit of a reprieve when you go down there because uh a little goes a lot further than it does here.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Like some of the tips I gave last time I was in Cancun would probably get me 86 for life at some of the brew pubs around Eugene.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: And uh, another thing I wanted to touch on, I saw some construction when I was down in Cancun too.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: And uh gotta be honest, I don't think OSHA would do very well down there because I thought that there was just some YouTube influencers doing parkour, but no, it was the workers up there with like hammers swinging from the belt, not harnessed in, just running across scaffolding.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: And I thought, better him than me, because I missed step one and I ping-pong all the way down all six floors, and they have to clean me up at the bottom.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: So uh some skilled labor going on out there too, Drew, but the service is always worth the tip out there.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: In my experience, uh, did not ever have, in fact, the the meanest person that I met was the timeshare uh presentation guy.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: He was an ass and wouldn't let us leave either.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Um, he knew I wasn't gonna buy anything, so maybe that had something to do with it, but the service was so good down there.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: I was so pleasantly surprised my first time in Mexico at one of the all-inclusive resorts with Ashley a couple years ago, and uh can't wait to get back down there, man.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Got to see some awesome runes and or ruins, whatever you want to call them.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Went on some uh cave diving tours, which was really cool.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, so it's I I've never been down there, not during college or anything.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: I never went on a spring break, but man, I had a good time in Mexico a couple years back.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And, you know, it wasn't even on our list to talk about Mexico, but uh, while we're on it, let me just touch on the timeshare.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: When we went to Cabo, my first time, it was on my honeymoon.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: And, you know, you get off the plane, you go through, and you they let you out the gate, and you're going over to where your transportation is, and everybody's grilling you.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Everybody's trying to get you to a timeshare presentation, and I didn't really understand it then, and I got roped in to agreeing to go to this thing.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: And my first red flag was then they were like, Don't tell anyone at your resort that you're coming.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Just go walk to the edge of the property and we'll pick you up in a van.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, uh, I don't want to go, but I'd already said yes, and so Amy and I reluctantly walk out there, and the deal that was made beforehand was we're giving you$200 cash, a bottle of tequila, and a Mexican blanket.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: That was that was the promise, okay?
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, take it or leave it on.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: I'm sure it's garbage tequila, it's not like the good stuff they've got.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: They probably just have like a trunk full of dirty tequila, the Mexican blanket, I'm not sure what that entails, but I know what$200 American cash is.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So we get in this thing, and Marcus, we're in a boiler room for hours where they're just, they won't let us leave.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I've said no so many times.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I had their little breakfast, I did the tour, we went up there, we heard it out.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: I told them, you know, I appreciate you, but I just can't do that right now.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And you know the kind of money we were making when I got married.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: You don't, you don't want me, dude.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not your guy, but all they're trying to do is to get you to sign your life away, and I wouldn't do it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: And they're bringing in the closer and then the closer's boss.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: I hear them arguing, getting mad at each other for not closing in like in the next room.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: So finally, Amy and I, we stand up and we've already, I've got my voucher in my hand for my money, my blanket, and my tequila.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: We stand up and we just start walking to the exit, and the guy's like, Well, where are you?
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Where are you going?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Where are you going?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: And I just keep walking.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: And it was so awkward.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: And we walked all the way out, went down the elevator, came out the front door, and we're I'm waiting for a cab to go back because of course they're not gonna give me a ride home.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And I see the little voucher office, and I'm all, well, I'm already here for giggles.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Let's go in and see what happens.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And I walk in, and the lady's, you know, she greets me, I hand her over the thing, she looks at it, she walks in the back room, starts whispering with a guy.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is not gonna end well.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: They walk back in, she pulls open a drawer, counts me out$200, slides over a bottle of tequila, and pulls out this nasty looking Mexican blanket and just and I just took my cash, shoved it in my pocket, threw my blanket under my arm, grabbed my tequila, and we just stormed out, and right then our cab pulled up in and gone.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: And I was like, okay, two things.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I will never, ever go to a timeshare again.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: And number two, I can't believe they just paid me$200.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, but we blew an entire day of Mexico, so it wasn't worth two.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, you pay more than$200 to be there.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: So we blew it there, but I'll tell anyone who will listen, don't sign up and don't even go and sit for it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Because I've I've been at the pool and people are like, oh, it's gonna be the sweetest deal.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: They're gonna take us on a booze cruise and we're gonna, we got VIP tables at this club.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, you're going to wreck your entire day.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: You're not even gonna want to go on the booze cruise.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be toast.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: So I can't believe they paid me, though.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: It was amazing.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: The only thing I would recommend is if you're gonna get a massage while you're at your all-inclusive, book it after the timeshare because that's what that's how it worked out for Ashley and I was the presentation was the first half of the day.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: We were able to get out and we had like a two o'clock couple's massage.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: So that's about the only thing that can get that stress out of your body that you gain during that presentation.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: They did it really strange with us, Drew.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: They had this really nice woman come down, probably in her 30s, took us to breakfast, you know, paid for the whole thing, even though it was all inclusive.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: I found that a little weird, but whatever, it's part of the show.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: She was so sweet.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: She walked us all over the property, she showed us the rooms, and then she brought us up to the office and sat us down with Big Ring and Watch Guy, you know, rolled up sleeves, hairier arms.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hairier arms than you would expect, lots of jewelry, and he grilled us.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: And when she walked out of her one-on-one with him to come back and try to sell us again, Drew, it looked like he just said, It's this sale or your whole family.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: She looked terrified.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: And I felt so bad for her.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And we ended up seeing her three or four times after that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Like we were still there for a few days, and she we were persona non-grata to her anymore.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: Like she was the most friendly person we'd met.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: And after we said no, she, if she caught herself looking in our direction, she would turn and look the other way.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: And I thought, like, I don't know what the working conditions behind the scenes look like, but that doesn't make it feel like it's very good.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: If she won't even look at us after this whole thing, what type of hell is she going through when she's sitting there with big ring and watch guy?
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's not a great environment to be in.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And I think they all have to have hairy arms like that.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: It's a qualification.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: If you don't have a full-blown gorilla arm, it's not it's not a thing.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: I will say something, because we might as well just make this whole segment about Mexico.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Amy always likes to get a massage in Mexico, and so she'll go down to the beach off the front of the resort in Cabo, and there's like a nice place and the wind's blowing through the sails and all this stuff.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: And so she gets one and she's like, Oh, I'm so relaxed.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I'm so relaxed.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: And a few days later, she's like, I'm thinking about getting another one.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And I spur, I I spout out and go, Well, you're gonna get another massage?
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Like, I haven't even gotten one.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And she's like, You don't like massages.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: I'm like, but you're just heading down there every day, like having a field day.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: And she's all well, let's have you do it.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And I just said straight up, I I don't love like hanging out naked with strangers.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: It's not my thing.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Like, I'll get naked, like if it's like, oh, are you a was?
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I can get naked for you, that's fine, but it's not really ideal for me, right?
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: So she's like, Don't worry, you don't even get you don't even have to get naked.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: And so she goes and she books me into this thing, she drops me off, her and the two, and at the time I only had two kids, they wave goodbye and they walk away, and this lady says, Come with me.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And so I go up and I follow her upstairs and she takes me to this little closet with a curtain.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Take off all of your clothes and put it in this basket.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Okay.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: So I close the curtain and I get stripped down to just my boxer briefs.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: And she comes back by knock, knock, knock, and I open up the thing, and I've got all my clothes in the basket, and she goes, Oh no, all of your clothes.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm all oh okay.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: And so I close the curtain.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Now I'm butt naked, and then she like comes back and hands me a towel, and I'm like, okay.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and then she takes my clothes and she's walking in front of me, she's not robbing me or whatever, and she takes my clothes and sits it in a basket like under my face, so I can see my clothes and my underwear under there.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: And it's just one of those things where, like, I'm just gonna be honest.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: When you lay on your stomach for that long, it's the same thing when you sleep.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: What happens to a man when they sleep?
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: You start to you start to grow in certain areas, and so I it wasn't like an arousal thing, it was just there was there was growth, and and like I was afraid to get off my stomach.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, is she gonna look at it?
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: I don't want her to look at it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to look at it.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, I didn't want anything to do with it.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Now, did she give an incredible massage after I was able to tame the beast?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: And I mean, once I got into a different angle, it wasn't so bad.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: But at one point she's massaging me and I'm on my back, and I'm like, wow, this is just wild.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: But what they don't tell you when you're someone who gets no massages ever, it releases all these toxins in your muscles and in your body that when it was all said and done, Amy and the girls come back, she's like, How was it?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, You lied to me.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: That's a straight that was a straight up lie.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I I feel completely betrayed.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Um, but it was fine.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: The lady was kind, she had amazing hands, and we get back to the pool, Marcus, and I have two beers.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: And now, granted, we've been drinking for days because it's all inclusive, but I have two beers, and the next thing they know, they look over and I'm just sawing logs snoring on a on a chair for something silly, like six hours.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: I just lay there and you know, Amy had the sole parent while I slept it off.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Blew in, I mean, it blew as much of a day as timeshare presentations.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: So I would just be weary if you don't normally get them.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: You might not want to go on your maiden voyage in the middle of your vacation because you might get absolutely lit up with the toxins.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: That's what got me.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: It's a real time release thing, too.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: It doesn't happen immediately.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: You feel okay walking out of there, maybe even a little bit energized.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And the other thing I'll tell you about these gals, don't underestimate them.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: If you walk into a massage booth and you've got like a four foot seven um Mexican lady standing there, she has the ability to massage your bone marrow without trying, okay?
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: And it will get to a point.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Sometimes you gotta tell them.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: My wife can put up with it.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: She gets these deep tissue massages all the time.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: I was squeaking over there true because I'm back of my knee.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Like she would hit me in spots that I didn't even know.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: I felt like I had Sylvester Stallone doing pressure point taekwondo on me.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Um, but I will say, man, one of the best massages I've ever had.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know what it was, but when she laid me on my back, she took this stuff and rubbed it in her hands and pow and clapped over my face like that.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: And it was one of the greatest scents I've ever smelled in my life.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: I still have no idea what it was, but it I'm I don't mind laying on my stomach.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: It's the rollover on your back part that's always a little bit weird for me.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: I just I don't think that's my best side, if you want my honest opinion.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I'm an ass band, baby.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Well, I want to point out I want to point out that I I did get control of the the situation before I was told to turn to my back.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: I didn't even know we were going to the back and I was uncomfortable.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: When she goes, now turn over.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, thank goodness.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm under control here.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: And and you know, for people who listen to this, that was an uncontrollable situation.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: It wasn't mental.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: It was all about flow.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: It's there's a lot of blood flow going on.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: And I I also, you know, when I rolled over on my back, the one thought that I had is, how low is she gonna go on my stomach?
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Because I've been eating authentic Mexican food for four straight days, and I'm gonna fart if she starts rubbing on me.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: And they rub real close to the danger zone.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: They really do.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: It's um look, they've they've got a lot of experience, they know right where to go.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: Um, I had an elderly lady here in Eugene get too far up the thigh and touch my gum one time, and I was out.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: I could not enjoy the massage after that, and I've never gone back to that place.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: But they're pros in Mexico, man.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: They did a great job.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Uh we gotta take a break.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: This was completely unplanned, but that's the that's what makes for the best stuff.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: When we come back, a big shocker for Oregon duck basketball, uh story heard around the country.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Also, the first look of the brand new Blazer team.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: And finally, the construction and Oregon Department of Transportation comes through huge.

- 23:01SPEAKER_01: And while I tried to dig in that yard, it was not gonna happen.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: And I brought in the big dogs, and not only did they give me the best price around, they also took care of business and made me confident that I'd have water back in time to make sure my kids could have a bath and a glass of water when they needed.

- 23:30SPEAKER_01: So the preseason is underway for the Portland Trail Blazers as the new look team was all together.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: And I know I'm a bit of a homer, but I like this team.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I like the depth.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, we don't even have shade and sharp back yet, and there's a lot to chew on there.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Damian Lillard made his return, and when Mark Mason, my buddy, uh came on and he's the voice of the Blazers on the sideline, wearing the letter O, that place blew up.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: It was badass.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: And to see him uh pick up 15 points in a short number of minutes showed what he's got.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Ja Morant looked pretty good.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And you know who looked great?
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Uh it's funny because Marcus, I wanted to bring this up when we were talking last week.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: The Trailblazers have made a point that extending Scoot Henderson is a main priority for the team.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: And when we were gonna talk last week, I was gonna I was gonna say to you, is that something that should be a priority with what we've seen so far?
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And then in that opening preseason game, he looked like a boss.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: There's one point where they're going in for an easy layup, and dude comes in from nowhere and just throws down a monster block.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Like for a guard, he looks humongous.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: And I think we forget that we drafted him at 19.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Like he was just a child, basically.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: And so he's got growth until 24 where he's gonna get better and better and better.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: And maybe they saw something in camp that they're like, we gotta get, we gotta get this guy's signature on the line.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, you bring back the savvy vet and Damian Lillard, who has seen enough of it at this point in time in his career that he can really help the development of a player like that.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and and I'm glad this to hear it, Drew, because I always liked the Scoot pick.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I thought it was um I didn't know how it was gonna shake out when it happened, but I've always had and maybe it's just the name.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Maybe I just like having a guy on the team named Scoot.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: I think that's cool, but I I want to see him, just like I want to see Anthony Simons, just like I want to see Shadon Sharp.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Like I want to see these guys progress and grow within the system because as Blazer fans, that's what we're used to.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Brandon Roy was a high draft pick, but he got better every single year here at Portland.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and we always hope to see that out of our draft picks, right?
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: So um I'm glad to hear that he's flying around the gym already.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Let's hope he can stay healthy and continue to improve uh because this team might have something for this NBA season, Drew.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: It's exciting considering where we were just a few months ago talking about this a couple months back.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: It was all worries about the stadium and are we even going to have a team in a couple years?
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Now it feels like basketball season's real and we can just focus on how the team looks and how we feel about the the record and how the season's shaking out.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: It's wild how much times have changed because Tom Dundan said just a couple of days ago that his main focus now is to bring a championship to Portland.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And if he does that, 100% everything else goes away.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: It's just gone.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, Paul Allen was an amazing owner, but he couldn't get the job done with the teams that he had.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, he put together some great rosters, a hell of an owner, don't get it twisted.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: But, you know, 1977 is a long time ago.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have a bar named after it because it's the one thing.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: You know, like there's some of these people have so many championships, like, what year would we put on it?
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: But we know 1977.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: So if they can get it done, penny pinching, whatever you want to call it, will totally go out the window.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Kind of makes me feel happy to not be one of these dynasty franchises, Drew, because I mean going to a Golden State Warriors game must be tough when you're like, hey, do you want to go to 2015 or 2016 or should we go to 2014?
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure what bar we should go to.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: There's so many of them.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're spoiled.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Ass uh doesn't deserve that many of them.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: We got one and we love it, and uh, I'm I'm ready to have 2026 the neighbor bar or 2027 the sister bar open up across the street.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: It's time.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: I think it would be great.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Um, a little footnote before we move on to other news.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Uh Braden Bell, the guy who was fired within hours of the Portland Trail Blazers, they did he did ask for his job back, and that did not happen.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: They said that they wish him well on his way, um, but that it will not be happening for him.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: So they will be continuing their search for the next television voice of the Blazers.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Of course, our boy Travis Demurs still calling it on Rip City Radio.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I I gotta hand it to Mr.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Bell for asking, uh, because that's really all he was left with at the time, Drew.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: But as my father has always said to me, uh, ask in one hand and take a dump in the other and see which one fills up first.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Um you're not getting much out of it.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: And we I think we all kind of knew uh there's no way for this guy to even say face at this point in time.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, it's it's unfortunate the way that whole thing shook out, but I do have my fingers crossed that maybe uh we get to see Travis instead of just hear him this year at some point in time.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's already the voice at the urinal.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Like they always play the radio call in the bathroom.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: So if you've got like a bad tummy ache or you just had too many stadium beers, he's your guy.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: He'll guide you back to your seat.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: I've always told Travis, I'm like, we have a more intimate relationship now that we've all, you know, had our hands where they're not supposed to be while you're doing the call.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: So thanks for keeping us comfortable.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: And you know, some people get stage fright at the urinal.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: You need a comforting voice.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Travis Demers is that.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: He's the man.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, moving on to the Oregon Ducks, in a surprise situation, Dana Altman makes the announcement that he is retiring, not at the end of the season, but right now.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Now he said um that it was a comment from Tom Izzo last year where they asked him how long he will coach.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: And he said, Well, the good thing for Michigan State University is they can know that as soon as I've lost the drive, I'm going home.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: They're not gonna have to send me home.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I'm going home.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: And Dana kind of used that as food for thought.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: He had some time off over the last month or so where he thought that his battery would recharge as it has at the end of each season.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: It didn't.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: He had people who were in his corner who said, just take a step back.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Don't retire.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Have your assistance, have other people do the heavy lifting, and you do more facilitating.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: He said he tried that for a few weeks and it just wasn't him.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: It wasn't the way he goes.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: And he says he asks his guys all the time to look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves if they can give it their all.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: And if they can, stay.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: If you can't, go.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: And he said he would be a massive hypocrite if he stayed when he no longer felt he could haul the mail.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: How do you feel about the news, Marcus?
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm bummed that we're not gonna have uh the quality of coach that we've had for, well, going all the way back to the 2010, 2011 season here at at the University of Oregon, Drew.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Um, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dana Altman, not just because of what he did on the basketball court as a coach, how he's brought these teams along and made seemingly good community members and good people out of a lot of his players.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Obviously, with college athletics, there's always an exception there, but um Altman did a great job.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: And I'll tell you one thing about him as a guy that always stuck with me, Drew.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: When he first got here back in 2010, 2011, uh, I was covering the ducks for KPW in Eugene, the little AM news station that could there, uh, doing that work for Bill London.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: And I had just finished my first football season, which was great.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Chip Kelly was there, LaMichael James.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: You get some of the, I mean, Mariota was there.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: It was a really cool first season experience for me.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: And now I got to jump into basketball, which I'm a little bit less familiar with, and I don't know how this is gonna shake out.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: They do a lot of their audio interviews right there on the practice court.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: There's balls bouncing and flying all over the place.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: It's a hard environment to adjust to when you're coming out of seeing these football teams uh, you know, in a in a room that's built for a press conference every single week.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: And I introduced myself the very first time I had a question for him.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: I said, Coach Altman, Marcus Bridges, KPW.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: I asked him the question, I put the mic in front of it, he gave me a great answer.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: But it was throughout the season and basketball seasons long.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: I went there every week, maybe sometimes miss a week, maybe sometimes twice a week.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: And every time I had a question for Dana Altman, I never introduced myself again.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: And he called me by my first name like we had known each other for decades, every other time that I was in there.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: And having the experience that I have with that type of thing, that's not typical.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: In fact, that's atypical in the in every sense of the word.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: And there's little things like that that you can look at and say, that's not just a really, really good basketball coach.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: That's a hell of a guy.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: And he's a pro.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: He's a professional and he handles himself in the manner you hope, not only the team that you're working for and and you know, gathering information from, but the team that you root for, you hope you got a guy like that at the helm.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And we did for uh 15, 16 years, Drew.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: And while it's heartbreaking to see him go, the amount of respect I have for him, it's his decision.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: And if he doesn't think he's got it anymore, enjoy the golden years, man.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: You've you've coached here for over 560 games.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: You've given us 68% winning percentage, you've put us in the final four.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: We didn't even know what March was before Dana Altman got here for the most part.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: And so, um, you know, I hope he enjoys the golden years.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: I hope that if he does reignite, he gets a better coaching job somewhere else and can go and and be the man he wants to be.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: But uh man, I enjoyed that guy's tenure here, and I'll always look back at it fondly.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: And after the press conference, I I would bet the house that he's done.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that it's over.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: And you you saw the emotion on his face and the way I was kind of explaining it, those are words straight out of his mouth that he just lost the fire to do it day to day.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Now, Mark Few, head coach of Gonzaga, likely a future Hall of Fame coach himself, Oregon alumni, was asked about Dana Altman, and he said he reminded us all that he's not from Gonzaga, he's a duck.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: And then he said, He is one of the greatest guys that you will meet.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: And he's like, when you're on a recruiting trip or when it you're at a coach's function or whatever, he's just a great person.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: And people kind of glob onto that, and it's not, you know, a lot of people are like, okay, it feels like a facade.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: With him, it doesn't.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: And so I think it was an honor to have him here, and we were lucky to get him to come here when we did.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and he's the only coach we've had since Big Ernie Kent when I was in school.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a long ride.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: I was in college a long time ago.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I got a nephew at Oregon now.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: It's that long gone.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So he had a great ride.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: What's the total years that he did?
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: Do you know?
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: So his first year here was 2010-2011, and the last year, of course, being last year 25 to 26.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, as I said, we've got a 68% winning percentage.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was 382 and 182 in his time with the ducks.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: And let's listen to some of this, okay?
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Because as I go through the years here, we've got 2012-13 conference tournament champion, NCAA tournament birth, 13-14, NCAA tournament birth, 14-15, NCAA tournament birth, 16, regular season champion, conference tournament champion, NCAA tournament birth, 2017, regular season champion, NCAA tournament, NCAA Final Four.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, conference tournament again in 18, uh, the champion and the NCAA tournament, regular season champion in 2019, regular season champion in 2019 or 2021, NCAA tournament, and on down the list.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: There's still more that I could give you, but I know it's dragging on a bit.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: I think the point is made, and I don't want to belabor it.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: This is the best basketball coach that Oregon has had since the Tall Furs won the very first national title.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: And I don't think there's much comparison you can do between a coach in 1939 and a coach in 2026.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: So let's just call Dana Altman the best coach that Oregon men's basketball has ever had.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: And again, we're gonna miss him.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's anybody in this city, anybody in this state that roots for the ducks on the hardwood that isn't going to look back and go, man, you remember the Dana Altman days?
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: They were good, maybe better than we realized.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: And one of the great things about it is we'd get to the tournament in some of those years, eight-seed, nine-seed, twelve-seed, and we'd make the sweet 16 or make the elite eight with these tougher runs because that comes down to less about blue chip athletes and more about a coach who really knows how to bring a team together, knows the X's and O's, and can find a way to win when they're given a chance to study an opponent.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: We'll be lucky if we get somebody like that moving forward.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: A lot of people are hunting for a big name.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: I know we've got an interim coach that did a lot of work under him, and let's just hope that it all works out.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Oregon, you know, I the only thing, the only caveat I would say is we are the Nike college basketball team.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: We should have one of the greatest basketball teams on the planet at the college level.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: And so I hope that we can live up to that.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: I hope we can kind of parlay some of the stuff we do in football even more over to basketball.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's a different animal.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: People only have to stay for a year.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: The transfer portal, all that is a wild ride.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: So hoping that uh glory is in the future of the Blazers, or the not the Blazers, the Ducks, but it is one of those things where I have to take my hat off to Dana Altman and thank him for his service.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let me take you back to playing the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament in 2017, Drew, the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Everybody knows Rock Chalk Jayhawk is the pinnacle of blue bloods when it comes to college basketball.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: And Dana Altman brought that team of Peyton Pritchard, Jordan Bell, Dylan Brooks, Tyler Dorsey, guys that had a name, but not the type of name that they were given guys at Kansas and North Carolina and the like.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: And Dana Altman and the boys held that Jayhawk team's head under the water until the bubbles stopped and put us in, I believe that was our sweet 16 matchup, which got us to the Elite Eight.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Another big win following that up, putting us up against the eventual national champion, North Carolina Tar Heels.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, didn't work out for us in that game.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: But look at how many NBA pedigrees you had on that roster.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: And some of those guys have hoisted NBA championship trophies since then.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: So uh that's not something that we talked about a lot in the Ernie Kent days.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: As much as I love Ernie and how big of a soft spot I had for that guy, we didn't have a roster full of NBA names ever at University of Oregon.
