- 2:38Speaker 7: when I leave. That's like super cool to say, do
- 2:40Speaker 7: you have that on a business card or something I do?
- 2:43Speaker 7: That's actually neat.
- 2:44Speaker 6: I know, I still get you.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Never listened to that recording the same way ever again,
- 2:49Speaker 7: I know her can.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Al we say thank you, Amy, Thank you, Amy. You'll
- 2:53Speaker 6: think you're nuts?
- 2:54Speaker 7: Yes, can we say that? Dave Allen when he says
- 2:56Speaker 7: he's kind of a big deal, but what if he's
- 2:57Speaker 7: not here? Do we still have to say he's kind
- 2:59Speaker 7: of a big deal for you? Is an here? Now?
- 3:01Speaker 6: We don't have to Okay, I didn't say that.
- 3:03Speaker 7: You're kind of a big deal, Amy, And we're happy
- 3:04Speaker 7: to be here with you. Thank you, thank you.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Well. You guys are a big deal. And Regatta is
- 3:09Speaker 6: such a big deal. So excited to join in all
- 3:12Speaker 6: the activities. I mean, holy cow, there's a ton of
- 3:15Speaker 6: activities going on. So we have Mayor Amy Goodwin here,
- 3:19Speaker 6: we have Josh Scott with the craft Beer Festival and
- 3:23Speaker 6: Evan Osborne, they all fired up Youth Barbecue Challenge, So
- 3:27Speaker 6: tell me more.
- 3:28Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it is absolutely an incredible time of year
- 3:33Speaker 7: in the city of Charleston. When we brought back the
- 3:36Speaker 7: regatta four years ago, hand to the heavens. This is
- 3:39Speaker 7: exactly how it happened. When when I was running and
- 3:42Speaker 7: people said, oh, you need to bring it back, you
- 3:44Speaker 7: need to bring it back. Okay, okay, but you can't
- 3:47Speaker 7: have the Charleston Stern wheel Regatta without Stern Wheelers. And
- 3:51Speaker 7: so I when I came to our team and I said, okay,
- 3:54Speaker 7: I think about bringing this back, and they're like, mm hmm,
- 3:56Speaker 7: it's a big deal. How are we going to raise
- 3:58Speaker 7: all that money? Coordinate, organize? And I said, well, I
- 4:01Speaker 7: got to get the Stern wheelers first. I made two
- 4:02Speaker 7: phone calls to Josh Scott and to Brian Hughes and said,
- 4:07Speaker 7: y'all will the boats come? And we went to a meeting.
- 4:12Speaker 8: Well, I think we brokeered the whole thing on the
- 4:13Speaker 8: back of a cabin cruiser at lave on the Levee.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I think we did. And then I went to the
- 4:18Speaker 7: Sternwell Association annual meeting which Brian and Josh helped sneak
- 4:23Speaker 7: me in and I said, if we have it, well
- 4:25Speaker 7: you bring all your big boats, and they said we will,
- 4:28Speaker 7: And that's how it started so many years ago, and
- 4:31Speaker 7: it has grown every year. It is close to a
- 4:35Speaker 7: quarter of a million people show up for four days.
- 4:38Speaker 7: It is a thirty eight million dollar financial impact, an
- 4:43Speaker 7: economic impact for the city. And people always say, oh,
- 4:45Speaker 7: my gosh, what are you going to do with that money.
- 4:47Speaker 7: It's not my money, it's your money. It's local businesses.
- 4:49Speaker 7: It's shops and bars and restaurants and hoteliers who are
- 4:53Speaker 7: making that which is music to any mayor's ear. But
- 4:57Speaker 7: we wouldn't be able to do this enormous event with
- 5:01Speaker 7: the without the help of the workers of the City
- 5:04Speaker 7: of Charleston, police, fire, refuse, streets, traffic or the entire
- 5:09Speaker 7: Mayor's office, the entire city manager's office, but also our
- 5:13Speaker 7: board of directors at the Regatta, which Josh is a
- 5:16Speaker 7: member of because we suckered him in. We said, you
- 5:18Speaker 7: know about boats, come here, you know about boats and events. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 7: And so we're just we're incredibly thankful for our sponsors
- 5:27Speaker 7: and the people who really make it happen and great
- 5:30Speaker 7: partner groups like the Capital Market and Evan and the
- 5:34Speaker 7: Firecracker Race. We've got the Childhood Language Center. They do
- 5:38Speaker 7: an amazing job working with children who have speech language disorders,
- 5:41Speaker 7: autism and Asperger's and so we're delighted to have them
- 5:44Speaker 7: in the fourth of July Firecracker Race, United Way. And
- 5:48Speaker 7: the duck Drop, which is always so fun to watch
- 5:50Speaker 7: all those little ducks. It's dropped off the bridge.
- 5:53Speaker 8: It's fun to be on a stern will but going
- 5:55Speaker 8: up river for the race and watch behind us as
- 5:57Speaker 8: the last one goes under and they drop all the
- 5:58Speaker 8: duckies behind us.
- 5:59Speaker 7: I know it's so cool. But you know, speaking of
- 6:02Speaker 7: the stern Wheel race, Amy, that is something that you know.
- 6:05Speaker 7: There's so many events, and I know we're going to
- 6:06Speaker 7: talk about them over this the next hour, but I
- 6:08Speaker 7: will say one of the biggest events that has grown
- 6:12Speaker 7: every funeral. If you ask me what's your favorite, you're
- 6:14Speaker 7: not supposed to say you have a favorite, like saying
- 6:16Speaker 7: you have favorite children. They're not listening. So I do. No,
- 6:19Speaker 7: I'm kidding, I don't. But the funeral parade is always
- 6:22Speaker 7: my favorite. It just is. I love it. I dress
- 6:24Speaker 7: up with the kids every year. I'm into it. The
- 6:26Speaker 7: Wiener Dog Race is huge, the crowds are spectacular. But
- 6:30Speaker 7: every year we are watching the Kid's family Zone. We
- 6:33Speaker 7: can talk about that. The Stern Wheel Races has now
- 6:37Speaker 7: become kind of really popular and we really have to
- 6:41Speaker 7: plan and organize around it. And this year, for the
- 6:45Speaker 7: first time, I've been begging him for three years to
- 6:48Speaker 7: do it. Josh Gott, who probably knows more about the boats,
- 6:51Speaker 7: all of the boats and the river more than anyone,
- 6:54Speaker 7: is going to help mc that on Sunday. So we're
- 6:57Speaker 7: really thrilled to have Josh with us this year.
- 6:59Speaker 6: One cheerful And when is the race.
- 7:02Speaker 7: It is Sunday at three o'clock there it is, Yeah,
- 7:05Speaker 7: right on haw Dad. So we have a big screen
- 7:07Speaker 7: and it's gonna be it's gonna be super fun.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Yes, absolutely. And so Josh, you have the craft Beer Festival.
- 7:16Speaker 8: Yeah, this year we're back on Capitol Street. We've tried
- 7:19Speaker 8: the big, we've tried the small, and in the right
- 7:20Speaker 8: in the middle works. We've got a bunch of cooling
- 7:23Speaker 8: fans that are coming. We've got a bunch of good
- 7:26Speaker 8: for the heat, Yeah, a bunch of craft beers from
- 7:28Speaker 8: Spriggs and let's see the beverage market in North Central distributing.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Cool any fair weather IPAs there should be yes, Okay,
- 7:38Speaker 6: all right, I only know this because of my husband.
- 7:41Speaker 6: I don't know much about beer. He likes the Three
- 7:42Speaker 6: Floyd's and all that stuff.
- 7:44Speaker 7: Oh I don't know. My husband knows beers.
- 7:46Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 7:47Speaker 6: I know how fun. Okay. So the Craft Beer Festival
- 7:50Speaker 6: that is five thirty today on Capitol Street, Yes awesome.
- 7:56Speaker 7: And it's just a really nice get together, get everybody
- 7:59Speaker 7: together of the it's the you know, unofficial launch of
- 8:03Speaker 7: the regatta. Better Homes and Gardens does an amazing job
- 8:06Speaker 7: their team. They've kind of embraced this as their event,
- 8:10Speaker 7: and we're so happy to have Better Homes and Gardens,
- 8:12Speaker 7: not just because they're really nice and fun people, but
- 8:15Speaker 7: they're also sponsors. But it's really it's really neat and
- 8:19Speaker 7: for for folks who really don't know a lot about beer,
- 8:22Speaker 7: kind of like myself and my sister, to be able
- 8:25Speaker 7: just to have a small taste of things and to
- 8:28Speaker 7: be able to listen and learn from other people is
- 8:31Speaker 7: a is a really great opportunity.
- 8:32Speaker 6: It's an amazing craft. Hubby brews beer, So I mean
- 8:37Speaker 6: the steps that go into it are just phenomenal and
- 8:42Speaker 6: it's pretty cool.
- 8:43Speaker 7: It is really cool. It is really cool. Of course,
- 8:45Speaker 7: before that, I will mention that something new this year
- 8:48Speaker 7: as well, and we got a sneak peek of it
- 8:50Speaker 7: last night. I don't know, Josh, did you see the
- 8:52Speaker 7: regatta through the years? Have you seen it yet?
- 8:55Speaker 6: You wait to see that?
- 8:56Speaker 7: Okay? It is so cool when you walk in. Josh
- 8:59Speaker 7: has all like you talk about what you brought to that.
- 9:02Speaker 7: But through the years after bringing the regatta back, people
- 9:05Speaker 7: have brought me pieces of memorabilia. Josh one with me,
- 9:09Speaker 7: Oh yay, what is it? Can you take a book? Yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 7: may take from give it to us.
- 9:15Speaker 6: I'm like, she's gonna want this than you.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 6: No, it's from nineteen eighty four, it's for sure. Uh yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 6: talk amongst your talks, amongst yourself.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Grab it.
- 9:23Speaker 7: But but Josh at an estate sale got for me
- 9:28Speaker 7: a beautiful wrap around skirt from the seventies. That's a
- 9:31Speaker 7: hand stitched skirt and you know, a hand painted purse.
- 9:37Speaker 7: Someone sent to me and said, oh, I used to
- 9:39Speaker 7: carry this at the regatta. I was so proud. I
- 9:41Speaker 7: was like, that's a basket person by the way they're
- 9:43Speaker 7: coming back.
- 9:43Speaker 6: You may want to.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Keep this for yourself, but I mean every hat and
- 9:47Speaker 7: shirt and pin fun memory. We have videos playing of
- 9:51Speaker 7: old pasts regattas that were very very cool, and you
- 9:55Speaker 7: brought us a special gift.
- 9:56Speaker 8: Josh too, I have a I was gifted by a
- 9:59Speaker 8: real estate clas a handmade model of an old boat
- 10:03Speaker 8: that is actually done at regatta.
- 10:04Speaker 10: The whull of it is there.
- 10:05Speaker 8: The boat is very different in appearance now, but the
- 10:08Speaker 8: USS mud sock, that's the mud sock. Yeah, yep, it's
- 10:12Speaker 8: the They split it down the middle Hamburger style, hot
- 10:14Speaker 8: dog style on the four corners of it.
- 10:16Speaker 10: Are still the hall of the mudsock today. So it's
- 10:19Speaker 10: kind of cool.
- 10:19Speaker 7: See what I told you he knows about boats.
- 10:21Speaker 6: I does know about boats. That's very important.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Okay, what do you have there for us that looks
- 10:26Speaker 7: very seventy eighty terriffic fifteenth annual stern Rull.
- 10:30Speaker 6: We gotta don't miss the boat. One dollar okay, that's cute.
- 10:36Speaker 6: Let's see one dollar, yes, one charging for programs. Okay,
- 10:41Speaker 6: So it looks like I'm guessing nineteen eighty four, nineteen
- 10:44Speaker 6: eighty five, because there's coupons, oh, for around the city,
- 10:47Speaker 6: and they expire twelve to twenty five eighty five, so
- 10:50Speaker 6: maybe eighty five. I couldn't find a year on it anywhere.
- 10:53Speaker 6: But isn't that cool?
- 10:53Speaker 7: It's amazing.
- 10:55Speaker 8: And I'm seeing Charleston National Bank on the back page.
- 10:57Speaker 7: I know, I love it, Charleston Nation. You know, I
- 11:00Speaker 7: will say this, the Queen, the Queen, we ever regot
- 11:04Speaker 7: a queen, we have ever regota Queen's Yeah, I will
- 11:07Speaker 7: say that. It is what is so special seeing that
- 11:10Speaker 7: Amy from across the room and what we have seen
- 11:13Speaker 7: collected in this room is regatta. Everybody loves to go
- 11:19Speaker 7: to the all fired up barbecue challenge, everybody loves to
- 11:21Speaker 7: go to ternal races and funeral bretten, the Wiener Dog
- 11:23Speaker 7: and the Duckies and the great music. That is not
- 11:27Speaker 7: what it is about. It's just not. It is about
- 11:30Speaker 7: being together making memories. Because you don't keep something like
- 11:33Speaker 7: that unless it was a connection, a good time you
- 11:38Speaker 7: had with your spouse or your kiddos or your family.
- 11:42Speaker 7: That's why you keep things like that. That is why
- 11:44Speaker 7: that room is filled with things that people have kept
- 11:47Speaker 7: because it was important to them, because of a moment
- 11:51Speaker 7: they had together, and I think that's what is really
- 11:54Speaker 7: really special about the Charleston stern Will Regatta.
- 11:56Speaker 10: Well, I can kind of talk to that.
- 11:58Speaker 7: Yeah, hit us.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Funny story, Uh, my parents met on my dad's boat
- 12:04Speaker 8: at Regatta of eighty two and my birthday happens to
- 12:08Speaker 8: be nine months after regatta. So when Amy's talked about
- 12:16Speaker 8: bringing back regatta, she even mentioned the regatta babies that
- 12:19Speaker 8: were just kids at regatta and I think I may
- 12:21Speaker 8: have said I might be the official regatta you are,
- 12:25Speaker 8: yees I before.
- 12:28Speaker 11: Like my very first memories my grandmother taking me to
- 12:32Speaker 11: the funeral parade, and just it gives you all the
- 12:37Speaker 11: fuels every time. That to me, Like I think our
- 12:41Speaker 11: certain events resonate with people in different ways, and that
- 12:44Speaker 11: that one for me.
- 12:46Speaker 10: My aunt.
- 12:46Speaker 8: I bought my late aunt's home and you know, they
- 12:51Speaker 8: they brought it to me before they put on the
- 12:52Speaker 8: market or anything, so it wasn't completely cleaned out, and
- 12:55Speaker 8: I kind of grew up with my cousins there, and
- 12:57Speaker 8: she loved the funeral parade. She get mad at my
- 13:00Speaker 8: dad if she couldn't get off the boat in time
- 13:02Speaker 8: with away from family to go up and get dressed.
- 13:04Speaker 8: But when I bought the house. In her closet upstairs,
- 13:08Speaker 8: there were still two umbrellas that she had decorated with
- 13:11Speaker 8: fringe and glitter and sequins and everything that were still
- 13:14Speaker 8: in the in the in the closet. My cousin in
- 13:17Speaker 8: Lexington has them.
- 13:18Speaker 7: I bet you have to go to a commercial break
- 13:19Speaker 7: very soon. But I'm gonna go ahead and say this
- 13:22Speaker 7: this is and I'll help wrap up this segment by
- 13:25Speaker 7: just saying this. Last night when I was getting home
- 13:26Speaker 7: late and I just had walked through the door and
- 13:30Speaker 7: I turned around and I heard something at my front door,
- 13:32Speaker 7: and my camera went off, like someone's here at the door.
- 13:36Speaker 7: And I see this little girl with her mom and
- 13:39Speaker 7: they're taping things to my front door. Did you see
- 13:42Speaker 7: it on Facebook? And I go out and it is
- 13:45Speaker 7: a little girl named Sammy who was in the funeral
- 13:47Speaker 7: parade with me last year. She stands about this tall.
- 13:50Speaker 7: She's just as sweet as she can be. And she
- 13:53Speaker 7: did for me hand painted hand drawn signs and hearts
- 13:58Speaker 7: I love the regatta, a little stern wheeler and said
- 14:02Speaker 7: thank you for making a fun regatta for our city.
- 14:05Speaker 7: I love you, may Or Amy, and had like a
- 14:07Speaker 7: little flag and little sunshine smiling. She loves the regatta.
- 14:11Speaker 7: It means something to her.
- 14:13Speaker 6: You're going to make me cry.
- 14:14Speaker 7: I spent all day yesterday with her mom doing that
- 14:17Speaker 7: and said I want to go and thank her and
- 14:20Speaker 7: surprise her because it has such an impact on her
- 14:23Speaker 7: in the funeral parade, being with her little girlfriends that
- 14:26Speaker 7: are this tall. That is why we brought regatta back.
- 14:30Speaker 7: It's her event. It's no longer our event, It's her event.
- 14:33Speaker 6: I love that, Absolutely love that. It's about community. Yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 6: big Ley Wiggly Pigley Hotline three oh four, three four
- 14:43Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor texts three
- 14:45Speaker 6: oh four nine three five five, Zerra zero eight and Evan,
- 14:49Speaker 6: we we want to talk to you. We haven't talked
- 14:50Speaker 6: about to you about the Youth Barbecue Challenge.
- 14:53Speaker 11: Absolutely so today is the All Fired Up Kids Barbecue
- 14:57Speaker 11: Contest Capital Market. It's of all the events that we
- 15:00Speaker 11: do throughout the year at the Market, this one's one
- 15:01Speaker 11: of my favorite because it really embodies the three pillars
- 15:04Speaker 11: of our mission. Is a nonprofit and that is working
- 15:07Speaker 11: with West Virginia farmers, supporting small businesses and really creating
- 15:11Speaker 11: a community space. Nice and so for those that haven't been.
- 15:15Speaker 11: This is a youth focused culinary contests. What are the
- 15:19Speaker 11: ages sixteen and under? Okay, we give them a one
- 15:23Speaker 11: hundred dollars Capital Market gift card thirty minutes to go,
- 15:26Speaker 11: so it's kind of like supermarket sweep meets iron Chef
- 15:29Speaker 11: and then they have an hour and a half to
- 15:32Speaker 11: come back and prepare their meal. We're very fortunate that
- 15:35Speaker 11: year after year, Chef Paul continues to coach them along
- 15:39Speaker 11: and if you haven't been, you got to see it.
- 15:42Speaker 10: It's a lot of fun.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Awesome, we'll do that and I'm getting the you gotta

- 17:50Speaker 15: Saturday's at one on the Voice of Charleston five eighty wchs.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Heck. Welcome back to five ad w c HS the
- 18:11Speaker 6: Voice of Charleston. It's the Dave Allen Show. I'm Amy
- 18:14Speaker 6: Breedlove filling in for him today. We're talking all things Charleston,
- 18:17Speaker 6: Stern Wheel, Regatta, and Matthew Sutton is now in the
- 18:21Speaker 6: studio with me from Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti House. Young
- 18:25Speaker 6: It's the Stern Wheel Slamberrey.
- 18:28Speaker 10: Absolutely.
- 18:28Speaker 16: Yeah, the stern Wall Slambury is is on Saturday. We're
- 18:31Speaker 16: gonna actual start about three pm. Uh, it'll last a
- 18:35Speaker 16: couple of hours. But this is actually the third Slamberry
- 18:37Speaker 16: that we've had. So when we when Mark Goodwin brought
- 18:40Speaker 16: the Regatta back a couple of years or four years ago,
- 18:44Speaker 16: we had kind of a little test run and then Latin.
- 18:46Speaker 16: Then the second year we actually put the Slambury on
- 18:49Speaker 16: for for real and it was a great success. Is
- 18:52Speaker 16: an outfit called Regatta Professional Wrestling and we've kind of
- 18:54Speaker 16: branded ourselves to be around there.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Reg Gotta.
- 18:56Speaker 16: We run three events a year, but the slam Berry
- 18:58Speaker 16: is our marquee event. So this year we are super
- 19:01Speaker 16: excited to have wrestling legend Buff Bagwell come and be
- 19:05Speaker 16: kind of our MC. If anybody who knows wrestling knows
- 19:08Speaker 16: the Buff Bagwell was a huge part of the nWo.
- 19:11Speaker 16: If you're in your mid forties like i am, and
- 19:13Speaker 16: wrestling was part of your life as a high schooler,
- 19:15Speaker 16: you're gonna you're gonna know that him. We've got a
- 19:18Speaker 16: lot of other amazing local talents, but the most important
- 19:22Speaker 16: thing that's going on for wrestling that day is our
- 19:25Speaker 16: our regarda professional wrestling champion. Bishop Baylor has been champion
- 19:29Speaker 16: for seven hundred and thirty five days. Yeah, it's one
- 19:33Speaker 16: of the longest streaks in wrestling, and he's got probably
- 19:37Speaker 16: his toughest challenge. He is the longest raigning champion. But
- 19:40Speaker 16: he is not the first champion. The first champion was
- 19:42Speaker 16: actually a gentleman named Troy Parker. Troy won the championship
- 19:46Speaker 16: and then later that night do a contract we'll call
- 19:50Speaker 16: it a little sneaky contract stipulation the Bishop had put in.
- 19:53Speaker 16: He actually ended up beating Troy that night, won the
- 19:56Speaker 16: belt and has held it ever since. And Troy's looking
- 19:58Speaker 16: to get that back in a triple threat match with
- 20:00Speaker 16: with Bishop and and No Array. It's going to be
- 20:03Speaker 16: a really exciting event. I mean, you know, there are
- 20:05Speaker 16: those of us who who are who are kids at heart,
- 20:09Speaker 16: who have loved wrestling our entire lives, and we'll continue
- 20:11Speaker 16: to love wrestling. But really what this is about is
- 20:14Speaker 16: not only showcasing local talent.
- 20:16Speaker 7: UH.
- 20:17Speaker 16: West Virginia has an amazing, amazing independent wrestling scene. Most
- 20:22Speaker 16: most people know it led by a guy named Gary
- 20:24Speaker 16: Damren who runs All Star Wrestling down in Beckley and
- 20:27Speaker 16: Madison in that area. And we've learned a lot from
- 20:30Speaker 16: Gary and and he just got done putting his biggest
- 20:33Speaker 16: event on the year called the Bash in Beckley. Uh
- 20:35Speaker 16: and then you know, it's just really spawned from him
- 20:38Speaker 16: and a lot of others who have who've worked really hard.
- 20:40Speaker 16: Adam Harris, who most folks know, I think he was
- 20:42Speaker 16: only Dave earlier this week, and he's kind of leads
- 20:46Speaker 16: to Regatta show. But it's really about just having an
- 20:51Speaker 16: event that adds to Regatta as the I heard the
- 20:54Speaker 16: Marra and Josh talk about, you know, creating those memories.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It really is.
- 20:57Speaker 16: I mean, we have kids of all ages who come out.
- 20:59Speaker 16: We love creating new wrestling fans. That's actually our favorite
- 21:02Speaker 16: thing to do. If you let any anybody who has
- 21:05Speaker 16: been a lifelong wrestling fan talk about it for any
- 21:08Speaker 16: period of time, they're going to just they're going to
- 21:09Speaker 16: go on and on. So I'll stop here in a
- 21:10Speaker 16: second because we've got other events to talk about. But
- 21:13Speaker 16: the most exciting thing about it is it does get
- 21:16Speaker 16: to It gets people who can't go to other shows.
- 21:19Speaker 16: It's completely free, you can come down. It's this year's
- 21:21Speaker 16: for the first time ever first two years we did it,
- 21:24Speaker 16: it was ats slack clause, City Center slack clause. This
- 21:26Speaker 16: year for the first time ever, and people have wanted
- 21:28Speaker 16: to do it for a long time. But we're actually
- 21:29Speaker 16: going to wrestle on the Riverfront down and hat at
- 21:31Speaker 16: Riverfront Park, so we're going to be right in front
- 21:32Speaker 16: of the stage.
- 21:33Speaker 10: You're going to get to be in the bowl.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I heard it grew when I was here the
- 21:37Speaker 6: other day observing. It's like it's really grown and there's
- 21:40Speaker 6: going to be about forty chairs.
- 21:42Speaker 10: I think, yeah, well, then have the chairs.
- 21:44Speaker 16: You can bring your own chair, and then obviously you'll
- 21:45Speaker 16: be able to fill in the bowl in the concrete seats,
- 21:48Speaker 16: and it really is going to be fun. And then
- 21:50Speaker 16: the good thing about it this year is is that
- 21:52Speaker 16: being down sort of in the main, we gotta footprint.
- 21:55Speaker 16: The fans will be able to go to the vendors,
- 21:57Speaker 16: get some, get some food, get some and lemonades. I
- 22:00Speaker 16: was just over talking to Butch. He's got lemonade ready
- 22:03Speaker 16: for the kids. And it's just going to be really exciting,
- 22:05Speaker 16: fun event that not only highlights local wrestling, but just
- 22:09Speaker 16: brings people together. Wrestling is about community, just like everything else.
- 22:13Speaker 16: With the regatta, and we couldn't do it without Gino's
- 22:15Speaker 16: Pizza and Spaghetti House. They've been our sponsor now two
- 22:17Speaker 16: years in a row and it's been really great to us,
- 22:19Speaker 16: not only as a sponsor but also a partner. They
- 22:23Speaker 16: provide us some pizzas for our wrestlers, but they also
- 22:25Speaker 16: provide some props for us to be able to bring
- 22:28Speaker 16: into the wrestling shows. So it's going to be really exciting.
- 22:30Speaker 16: I suggest people come out. It's right leading into the
- 22:34Speaker 16: amazing entertainment Saturday night with Shalam who takes the stage
- 22:37Speaker 16: at six point thirty, and then bust A Rhymes who
- 22:39Speaker 16: takes the stage around eight. You know, all that timed
- 22:42Speaker 16: out perfectly. If you've got you know, the day to
- 22:45Speaker 16: come spend with us, it's the perfect thing to do,
- 22:48Speaker 16: right go to the funeral parade, walk down, get some drinks,
- 22:52Speaker 16: get something to eat, come sit down and have ad
- 22:54Speaker 16: go right into wrestling and then right into the concerts.
- 22:57Speaker 16: It's a full day downtown and we're really excit aut
- 23:00Speaker 16: it and it's gonna be it really is. We got
- 23:02Speaker 16: six we got six matches on the card and it's
- 23:04Speaker 16: something a little bit of something for everybody. We've got
- 23:06Speaker 16: our women's champion, Micah who's going to be there defending
- 23:08Speaker 16: her belt. We have the Appalachian Championship, Wrestling International Championship
- 23:12Speaker 16: is going to be on the line as well in
- 23:13Speaker 16: a triple threat match. So it's going to be a
- 23:15Speaker 16: lot of fun and it is for those of us
- 23:19Speaker 16: who have watched our whole life, it brings back a
- 23:21Speaker 16: lot of memories. And for those of us who are
- 23:22Speaker 16: those who are just now getting into wrestling, it's something
- 23:24Speaker 16: that they can enjoy. I love just coming seeing the
- 23:27Speaker 16: kids want photographs with the wrestlers, get their autographs. It
- 23:29Speaker 16: just it brings me back to when I was that
- 23:30Speaker 16: age getting to watch wrestling. It's it's a lot of
- 23:32Speaker 16: fun again.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Community and that that that warmy fuzzy feeling that you
- 23:37Speaker 6: get with all of the events that you grow up with.
- 23:40Speaker 16: Yeah, and I think too, it's just really it's enjoyable.
- 23:42Speaker 16: There's a really strong wrestling community.
- 23:45Speaker 17: You know.
- 23:45Speaker 16: Last late last year, there was a documentary called Grappalachia
- 23:48Speaker 16: that came out on West Junia Public Broadcasting.
- 23:50Speaker 10: To watch that, Yeah, it's really it's about thirty minutes long.
- 23:52Speaker 10: Guy and Troy Ray can put it together.
- 23:54Speaker 16: Local Guy he went around all the wrestling scenes, Summer Regatta,
- 23:57Speaker 16: professional wrestling stuff, and it's just a really good insight
- 24:01Speaker 16: into not only the wrestlers, but also the fans and.
- 24:03Speaker 10: The people who enjoy it.
- 24:05Speaker 16: You know, I've gone I've gone down to Madison a
- 24:09Speaker 16: couple of times to watch wrestl and I've gone down
- 24:11Speaker 16: to Beckley. And what's really interesting and fun about it
- 24:14Speaker 16: is like he you know, character from Charleston or Madison
- 24:17Speaker 16: or Beckley or Bluefield or wherever you're from. Everybody's just
- 24:20Speaker 16: there being together and enjoying the wrestling. And it's almost
- 24:23Speaker 16: like you might not know the person sitting besides you,
- 24:25Speaker 16: but we're all on the same page when it comes
- 24:26Speaker 16: to who were cheering four who were booing against what
- 24:29Speaker 16: we want to see happen, And it really is wrestling
- 24:31Speaker 16: isn't really about bringing people together.
- 24:33Speaker 6: Absolutely the Big Lee Pigley Wigglely Hotline three oh four
- 24:36Speaker 6: three four five fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor
- 24:38Speaker 6: Text three O four nine three five five zero zero eight.
- 24:42Speaker 6: And we do have a caller on the line, Mike
- 24:46Speaker 6: Hopefully story button, Hello, Hello, how are you? You are
- 24:50Speaker 6: speaking to Amy bred Love And also Matthew Sutton.
- 24:54Speaker 9: Okay, great, great, good, good to talk to you. I
- 24:56Speaker 9: love the conversation.
- 24:58Speaker 11: Listen.
- 24:58Speaker 9: I lived in and breed the regatta back in the
- 25:02Speaker 9: eighties and early nineties. I missed the I missed I
- 25:07Speaker 9: missed the Labor daytime. And I heard the mayor talking
- 25:12Speaker 9: about Nelson Jones, of the young man who who created
- 25:17Speaker 9: the regatta. He liked the Labor daytime because it was
- 25:21Speaker 9: a good way to end the summer. But with that said,
- 25:25Speaker 9: I love the regatta. We used to actually wait with
- 25:29Speaker 9: our chairs in front of the stage to let mister
- 25:34Speaker 9: Cartoon did his Yes, mister Cartoon, he was wonderful, and
- 25:41Speaker 9: we would all hover around him with our chairs because
- 25:44Speaker 9: as soon as he was finished, we were allowed to
- 25:47Speaker 9: set our tears up in front of the stage because
- 25:50Speaker 9: back then, of course, the concerts were just phenomenal.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Mike, what was your very first regatta?
- 25:57Speaker 9: Oh, it had to be back in Well. I moved
- 26:02Speaker 9: here in nineteen August of nineteen seventy four from New
- 26:06Speaker 9: Jersey to go to college at Mars Harvey. So that
- 26:10Speaker 9: was my first regatta because I remember my parents left
- 26:15Speaker 9: me there and the regatta was I'm pretty sure it
- 26:19Speaker 9: was just getting ready to get started back in seventy four,
- 26:24Speaker 9: so right away there at Labor Day they had a celebration.
- 26:27Speaker 9: If it wasn't seventy four, it was right after that.
- 26:30Speaker 9: Of course I was in college. But then later in
- 26:34Speaker 9: the eighties when I got older and I started teaching,
- 26:40Speaker 9: went to the regatta a lot. And one other thing
- 26:43Speaker 9: before I get off. Nobody has mentioned Justice William Brotherton,
- 26:50Speaker 9: who was back then. He was he ran the regatta.
- 26:56Speaker 9: He was the head of the regatta. He was an unofficial,
- 27:00Speaker 9: you know, he wasn't a paid person. He and his
- 27:03Speaker 9: wife were were mainstays for the regatta. He he loved it,
- 27:07Speaker 9: he breathed it, he brought he brought so much to
- 27:11Speaker 9: the regatta.
- 27:12Speaker 6: And I was young, but I do remember his name.
- 27:17Speaker 9: Justice William Brotherton, and and nobody's talked about him, and
- 27:21Speaker 9: and and I just want to keep I have so
- 27:24Speaker 9: many memories and thoughts we have to Uh, Mayor Amy
- 27:28Speaker 9: has done wonderful bringing it back. I also want to
- 27:33Speaker 9: put a little curve in it that past mayors have
- 27:37Speaker 9: been the ones that killed the regatta. Well, starting with
- 27:45Speaker 9: Mayor Melton who stopped the beer okay, and then Mayor
- 27:51Speaker 9: Gardner who fired Justice Brotherton and then finally Danny Jones
- 27:59Speaker 9: Uh during his administration stopped the regatta permanently.
- 28:04Speaker 6: And I wonderful Mayor brought it back.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 28:08Speaker 9: Wonderful Amy has brought it back the wrong time, at
- 28:11Speaker 9: the wrong time of year, but she has.
- 28:13Speaker 4: I think.
- 28:14Speaker 16: I think a couple of things. I think a couple
- 28:15Speaker 16: of things. Mike and and so I'm I'm the chief
- 28:18Speaker 16: of staff in americand one, so I was. I've been
- 28:20Speaker 16: with her since she took office. So a couple of
- 28:22Speaker 16: things to point out. And first of all, thank you
- 28:24Speaker 16: for bringing up Justice Brotherton because we need to.
- 28:26Speaker 10: We need to do that.
- 28:27Speaker 16: And if you are, if you do get a chance
- 28:28Speaker 16: to get around I think they talked about it earlier.
- 28:30Speaker 16: We do have a display inside the four Points. It's
- 28:32Speaker 16: like a historic display of stuff from I got a pass.
- 28:35Speaker 9: Interrupt something that I want. I'm sorry, but I have
- 28:39Speaker 9: I have his Stros hat that to me. Yes, it's
- 28:43Speaker 9: a cowboy hat and it's from Stros and it was
- 28:46Speaker 9: his hat that when I get a chance, I want to.
- 28:49Speaker 9: I want to give it to that. The museum that
- 28:52Speaker 9: you all, I guess are start the regatta museum that started.
- 28:56Speaker 10: Yeah, ahead, no, I think that that'd be that'd be great.
- 28:59Speaker 10: That's what we're trying to collect for the Regatta Museum
- 29:02Speaker 10: and put out there. But a couple of things.
- 29:03Speaker 16: One is is that I do think you know, one
- 29:06Speaker 16: of the big things that when when Mary good decided
- 29:08Speaker 16: to bring back to Regatta we started with was the
- 29:10Speaker 16: date and when the Charleston Stern Wore re Gotta stopped.
- 29:16Speaker 16: Then Marietta picked up the Labor Day weekend day for
- 29:20Speaker 16: the Stern Wheelers and and because it was the end
- 29:23Speaker 16: of the year and they wanted something to do. So
- 29:24Speaker 16: when we went to the first people we went to
- 29:26Speaker 16: was the Stern Wheelers and said, hey, what do you
- 29:28Speaker 16: think about bringing back to Regatta. They said, oh yes,
- 29:30Speaker 16: And we said what about Labor Day, said, we can't
- 29:32Speaker 16: do Labor Day. If you do it, then we can't come.
- 29:34Speaker 16: And we believe if it's going to be the Charleston
- 29:36Speaker 16: Stern world we gotta, then it's got to be. It's
- 29:38Speaker 16: got to be the Charleston Stern Wore we re gotta.
- 29:39Speaker 16: The Stern Wheelers have to be here. And that's where
- 29:41Speaker 16: the July fourth, that's where the July fourth came date
- 29:44Speaker 16: came into So don't you know that we looked at
- 29:47Speaker 16: the Labor Day, but this is about the Stern Wheelers,
- 29:50Speaker 16: so that's where the July fourth weekend came into. The
- 29:52Speaker 16: other thing, too, is is that you know, we're we've
- 29:54Speaker 16: we've really made sure we try to learn from stuff
- 29:57Speaker 16: that's happened in the past. And no no blame to anybody,
- 30:00Speaker 16: but we looked at it. We looked at how long
- 30:02Speaker 16: the regatta was, and we didn't feel like that we
- 30:04Speaker 16: couldn't make a ten day event anymore. So that's why
- 30:06Speaker 16: it shrunk down. Part of the things you looked at
- 30:09Speaker 16: when you talked about the beer sales being stopped, one
- 30:11Speaker 16: of the things that we decided was to end the
- 30:12Speaker 16: regatta earlier in the evening.
- 30:14Speaker 10: We learned pretty quickly.
- 30:15Speaker 16: From all the events that we've run, if you last
- 30:17Speaker 16: passed nine thirty, maybe ten o'clock, then you're just asking
- 30:20Speaker 16: for trouble. We've also beefed up security with the Charleston
- 30:23Speaker 16: Police Department, so you know, we've tried to learn from
- 30:25Speaker 16: everything that's gone on in the past, but at the
- 30:28Speaker 16: same time making it honoring the past but also bringing
- 30:31Speaker 16: in new things like wrestling being one that that is
- 30:34Speaker 16: something different.
- 30:35Speaker 10: That we can continue to add to, but it really is.
- 30:37Speaker 16: I mean, the Regatta really is something that honors Charleston's history,
- 30:42Speaker 16: the Starning Wheeler history, but really trying to also make
- 30:46Speaker 16: it new for this generation because I think one of
- 30:49Speaker 16: the things too is, you know, when I was a
- 30:50Speaker 16: young kid, my parents worked the our church's booth that
- 30:53Speaker 16: was there, you know, selling hot dogs and things like that.
- 30:55Speaker 16: Those are the memories that I have, and we want
- 30:57Speaker 16: to make sure that kids who were you know, eight, ten,
- 31:00Speaker 16: twelve years old when they're you know, forty five sitting
- 31:02Speaker 16: here is having the opportunity and the honor to work
- 31:05Speaker 16: for a mayor. They're sitting here, remember and they're regatta
- 31:07Speaker 16: that they've got something to lean back to, and that's
- 31:08Speaker 16: what this is really about, so trying to create those
- 31:11Speaker 16: new memories for them as well. I think a lot
- 31:12Speaker 16: of times, you know, we all lean on to the
- 31:16Speaker 16: what we remember and forget that we're trying to create
- 31:19Speaker 16: new memories for people, and that's really what we're trying
- 31:21Speaker 16: to do here. So appreciate everything, and I think please
- 31:23Speaker 16: come down and see the regarding museum.
- 31:24Speaker 10: It's really cool. I walked in there yesterday to see that.
- 31:27Speaker 10: I walked in yesterday and.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I was really in awe.
- 31:28Speaker 16: I've seen the pieces individually, but I hadn't seen them
- 31:31Speaker 16: as a whole. And it really is it really is
- 31:33Speaker 16: cool and it takes you back. And I looked at
- 31:34Speaker 16: something I said, Man, we had to remake that T
- 31:36Speaker 16: shirt or we had to redo that cup. It's just
- 31:38Speaker 16: really really cool stuff in there, and it's really worth
- 31:41Speaker 16: a stop just to see and to get some stuff
- 31:45Speaker 16: from the past because it brings back a lot of
- 31:47Speaker 16: memories and then you go out to the boulevard and
- 31:48Speaker 16: you start.
- 31:48Speaker 10: Making new memories.
- 31:50Speaker 6: Well I heard about.
- 31:51Speaker 10: It though, was listening this is it.
- 31:52Speaker 6: Yeah, so the brochure from I'm guessing nineteen eighty four.
- 31:54Speaker 6: But yeah, seeing the logos from the local businesses Denis
- 31:58Speaker 6: is always fun. Thank you for your call, Mike, And uh, yeah,
- 32:02Speaker 6: I'm excited about the drone show. Speaking of new things,
- 32:06Speaker 6: that's very exciting on Sunday at nine.
- 32:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 16: So yeah, with WVU WVU Hospitals and Thomas Hospitals. The
- 32:16Speaker 16: one of the things is they they again wanted to
- 32:18Speaker 16: dry something different and they had sponsored the fireworks last
- 32:20Speaker 16: year and kind of talked about a drone show and
- 32:23Speaker 16: then we were a little like, well can we pull
- 32:25Speaker 16: this off?
- 32:25Speaker 10: How can we pull this off?
- 32:27Speaker 2: And then.
- 32:28Speaker 16: Thomas Hospitals and doctor Rosen Krantz and his team sponsored
- 32:32Speaker 16: the the drone show that we had at Holly Jolly
- 32:35Speaker 16: Browlely and it went over really well.
- 32:38Speaker 6: That's right. I saw that on Facebook.
- 32:39Speaker 10: Yeah, so that was about that was one hundred drones.
- 32:41Speaker 10: I think this one's gonna be two hundred.
- 32:43Speaker 16: It's gonna be over the river, and it's gonna be
- 32:45Speaker 16: really fun it you know, not to not to kind
- 32:47Speaker 16: of give it away, but it's gonna be a nice
- 32:48Speaker 16: little recap of the regatta as it happened, but really
- 32:53Speaker 16: be really fun and be something different. We thought it
- 32:55Speaker 16: would be great to end with. So you're gonna want
- 32:57Speaker 16: to be out on the boulevard. You get to listen
- 33:00Speaker 16: to the to the great music from Jefferson Starship and
- 33:03Speaker 16: then and then have the show as soon as they
- 33:05Speaker 16: in probably about nine thirty, and I gotta wait for
- 33:07Speaker 16: it to get dark enough. But yeah, fire works on
- 33:10Speaker 16: Friday night, which is going to be great. And then
- 33:11Speaker 16: Friday night right around nine thirty after Casey in the
- 33:15Speaker 16: Sunshine Band, and then the drone show and then the
- 33:17Speaker 16: drone show on Sunday is a nice is a nice
- 33:21Speaker 16: end to it all and something that.
- 33:23Speaker 10: We're trying this year.
- 33:23Speaker 16: And again we couldn't have We couldn't have done it
- 33:25Speaker 16: without the without the support of WU Medicine and Thomas Hospitals.
- 33:30Speaker 10: They really led to charge on this one.
- 33:33Speaker 6: Yes, thanks to all the sponsors. And we have got
- 33:35Speaker 6: to go to a break. So older adults should protect

- 36:27Speaker 6: forty three. We're talking everything Charleston sternwheel Regatta within like
- 36:32Speaker 6: fifteen minutes. It kicks off with the Vellie Gems sternwheel
- 36:36Speaker 6: boat rides down at Hatted Riverfront Park and here in
- 36:40Speaker 6: the studio with me now Matthew Sutton is hanging out
- 36:42Speaker 6: and we have Jeff Pearson now as well.
- 36:44Speaker 4: Hello, good morning, good morning, how are you.
- 36:46Speaker 6: I'm great, How are you doing well?
- 36:47Speaker 4: Ready to do this?
- 36:48Speaker 7: I know?
- 36:49Speaker 6: So exciting?
- 36:50Speaker 11: Right?
- 36:50Speaker 6: Yes, so you're with the funeral Parade workshop and copa's participation.
- 36:56Speaker 6: Tell me more about that.
- 36:57Speaker 9: Sure.
- 36:57Speaker 4: So CPA COPA we call it is a Charleston Office
- 37:00Speaker 4: of Public Art.
- 37:01Speaker 19: So our day job is murals and sculptures and taking
- 37:05Speaker 19: care of the public art around Charleston. For Regatta, we're
- 37:08Speaker 19: working with the Funeral Parade and the Family Fund Zone.
- 37:10Speaker 19: What we're doing with those things is kind of bringing
- 37:12Speaker 19: art to those things through community art projects, make and
- 37:15Speaker 19: take art. We're bringing a group called Fluidity Performance Group.
- 37:20Speaker 6: Yes, I wanted to know about that sounds really cool.
- 37:23Speaker 19: Yeah, So Fluidity is a kids who solele.
- 37:27Speaker 6: That's the word I was trying to think of.
- 37:29Speaker 19: Yes, error Lists and stilt walkers still have these incredible
- 37:33Speaker 19: themes and costumes. They'll actually go be doing a workshop
- 37:36Speaker 19: with kids for error Lists on both on Friday and Saturday,
- 37:41Speaker 19: and they will be.
- 37:41Speaker 4: Part of our funeral parade as well. But we're really
- 37:43Speaker 4: excited about that.
- 37:44Speaker 6: That sounds so great. And what are the ages that
- 37:46Speaker 6: kids can join in any age.
- 37:48Speaker 19: Pretty much any age they have on the on our
- 37:50Speaker 19: Facebook page, we have a little bit of kind of
- 37:52Speaker 19: what the know before you go on the City of
- 37:54Speaker 19: Charleston's off to the Public Art facebook page. There's a
- 37:56Speaker 19: little bit about Fluidity and what to expect, and also
- 37:59Speaker 19: their web site is incredibly thorough about when they're coming
- 38:02Speaker 19: to a town, what they what people can expect before
- 38:06Speaker 19: they come to see him, and what they do.
- 38:08Speaker 6: Essentially, gotcha and let's see. So we have that on
- 38:12Speaker 6: both Saturday and Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 4: So they're gonna be with us all day Friday and Saturday.
- 38:17Speaker 7: Yeah, Okay.
- 38:18Speaker 19: The workshop on uh Friday is going to be at
- 38:21Speaker 19: two thirty. Yeah, and then the workshop on Saturday will
- 38:26Speaker 19: be I think it's four.
- 38:28Speaker 4: Well to check out, there's one. There's one at four
- 38:30Speaker 4: as well.
- 38:30Speaker 6: So, oh, we have twelve forty five.
- 38:32Speaker 4: Yeah, there's performances at twelve forty five and that Slack Plaza. Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 19: All this will be at City Center at Slack Plaza,
- 38:37Speaker 19: the kid a Family Fund Zone. In addition to Fluidity,
- 38:41Speaker 19: we have caricatures by Rob Cleland. We have a magician
- 38:45Speaker 19: and comedian Joey Stepp. We have not mister but professor
- 38:50Speaker 19: bubble maker. He got his degree. Yeah, yeah, he is incredible.
- 38:54Speaker 19: It's it's kind of exactly what it sounds like.
- 38:56Speaker 4: This is this guy. He comes in and he does.
- 38:58Speaker 19: Incredible stuff with bubbles. He will put people inside bubbles.
- 39:01Speaker 19: He's a whole bubble show.
- 39:02Speaker 6: I want to be inside a bubble.
- 39:03Speaker 4: You have to come down. He'll put you in one.
- 39:04Speaker 10: He'll be there.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Yeah, he does it. This is his fourth year with us.
- 39:08Speaker 19: He's with us the entire run of our the regatta
- 39:11Speaker 19: each year. He kind of ups the ante a little
- 39:13Speaker 19: bit as much as you can do with bubbles, but
- 39:15Speaker 19: he does. I mean, he makes bubbles. So it's such
- 39:17Speaker 19: an incredible thing. It's it's incredible.
- 39:20Speaker 6: That's just too cool. Big Lee Wiggly Piggly Hotline three
- 39:23Speaker 6: oh four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony
- 39:25Speaker 6: the Taylor Text three four nine three five five zero
- 39:28Speaker 6: zero eight. I Mamy Breed Love in for the for
- 39:30Speaker 6: Dave Allen, The Dave Allen Show, Talking Charleston Sternwheel Regatta
- 39:34Speaker 6: and the Skate the Skate Park two is amazing. I'm
- 39:40Speaker 6: so glad that that is here. My husband wishes that
- 39:42Speaker 6: that was here when he was growing up because he
- 39:44Speaker 6: was a big skateboard kid walking around town with the
- 39:46Speaker 6: skateboard and skateboard clinics happening and an open skate on Sunday.
- 39:52Speaker 10: Yeah, we're really excited.
- 39:53Speaker 16: So the skate park was an idea that meryorhead and
- 39:56Speaker 16: probably five years ago, I think is when we ended
- 39:58Speaker 16: up actually working in park tarnering with the Western Department
- 40:01Speaker 16: of Highways because it's under their interstate and it's really
- 40:04Speaker 16: just taken off. I mean, if you go over there
- 40:06Speaker 16: anytime during the day, especially in the evening times, the
- 40:08Speaker 16: skate park has packed. So when when we brought to
- 40:11Speaker 16: Regatta back, we had to include the skate park, and
- 40:13Speaker 16: we've got some amazing local local folks who who really
- 40:17Speaker 16: help put on good clinics for kids, and it really
- 40:19Speaker 16: ends up being one of the things that kids have
- 40:21Speaker 16: a lot of fun with. And a nice thing this
- 40:22Speaker 16: year is I think they're going to be a little
- 40:23Speaker 16: bit outside of the skate park and they're going to
- 40:25Speaker 16: do kind of a run up and down the boulevard
- 40:27Speaker 16: as well. So it's gonna be it's gonna be fun.
- 40:29Speaker 16: It's all it's all tied in, and I think that
- 40:31Speaker 16: the one thing that the Jeff Kind of kind of
- 40:34Speaker 16: left out.
- 40:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 40:36Speaker 16: First of all, I think that don't don't ever let
- 40:38Speaker 16: Jeff under sell what the Office of Public Art and
- 40:41Speaker 16: Charleston does. Over the last five years, they've done one
- 40:43Speaker 16: hundred and thirty six public art projects and the number's
- 40:45Speaker 16: probably grown higher than that over the last few few months.
- 40:48Speaker 16: So it's an incredible asset to the city of Charleston.
- 40:50Speaker 16: Whenever you see public art, it's one of the things
- 40:52Speaker 16: where you know, we can do tours in our city
- 40:54Speaker 16: about about all of the art, and we do do
- 40:56Speaker 16: tours and people come here and look for it, so
- 40:58Speaker 16: it is it's an amazing Yeah, Mortarman and all of
- 41:01Speaker 16: the different little activities in our projects throughout the entire city,
- 41:06Speaker 16: both big and small, is very important. But with public Art,
- 41:09Speaker 16: the big deal about what they do is working with
- 41:11Speaker 16: these working with kids and the Family Fund Zone that
- 41:13Speaker 16: is all free and the Family Fun Zone and sponsored
- 41:15Speaker 16: by West Banco and it's entirely free. There are rides,
- 41:18Speaker 16: there are you know, I won't have any kids, but
- 41:21Speaker 16: there are you know, like Jupiter Jumps, and there are
- 41:24Speaker 16: water slides, and there are all these arch and craft
- 41:26Speaker 16: projects and all the Professor bubbles and everyone else.
- 41:30Speaker 10: But it's all completely free to folks. And that's the
- 41:31Speaker 10: big part about it. We wanted to do.
- 41:33Speaker 16: Part of the what the REGD does is it's not
- 41:35Speaker 16: just you know, a big, huge event. We have a
- 41:38Speaker 16: strong mission to give back to the community and providing
- 41:41Speaker 16: all these folks for free. We've got the carnival, which
- 41:43Speaker 16: which you know has paid rides, but then the Family
- 41:45Speaker 16: Fund Zone.
- 41:46Speaker 10: Everything over there is free, yes, free, free.
- 41:48Speaker 19: Fore, I think what I mentioned the community, our projects,
- 41:52Speaker 19: we can engage kids. We build a six foot bird
- 41:55Speaker 19: that kids will be painting feathers for and that is
- 41:58Speaker 19: we're so excited about that.
- 41:59Speaker 15: I love it.
- 42:00Speaker 6: I love art and got to take a break. Dave

- 44:43Speaker 6: three five five zero zero eight Charleston Stern will Regatta
- 44:46Speaker 6: happen in beginning like ten minutes from now, and Matthew Sutton,
- 44:51Speaker 6: Jeff Pearson in the studio with me right now, and
- 44:53Speaker 6: we're talking about the Princess Party and the Young Entrepreneurs.
- 44:58Speaker 19: Yes, so we're really excited to bring up partnership with
- 45:00Speaker 19: Children's Theater Charleston, and what a great organization that is
- 45:03Speaker 19: for our young people to put them on stage, put
- 45:04Speaker 19: them behind stage, showing what powerful things you can do
- 45:07Speaker 19: with acting and sharing that with our community. One of
- 45:10Speaker 19: the things they do they come out and do princess parties,
- 45:13Speaker 19: prince and princess parties, i should say, and they come
- 45:15Speaker 19: out as all the princesses and the girls, the young
- 45:19Speaker 19: girls and young boys come out and dress like princes
- 45:21Speaker 19: and princesses and it's just a great time. They'll be
- 45:24Speaker 19: there today from twelve to two with a princess party
- 45:27Speaker 19: with cupcakes and juice and sing alongs.
- 45:28Speaker 4: It's gonna be a great.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Time, lovely. And the young entrepreneurs, you said that started
- 45:34Speaker 6: last year.
- 45:35Speaker 16: The Young entrepreneurs market start last year was just kind
- 45:38Speaker 16: of an idea that came out of the board meeting.
- 45:40Speaker 16: We have so many folks in our community who are
- 45:43Speaker 16: make crafts or they make juices, they make a lot
- 45:46Speaker 16: of different things and bringing them to the regatta. Last
- 45:49Speaker 16: year with just a small idea, you know, it was
- 45:51Speaker 16: just a kind of a smaller tent and we had
- 45:53Speaker 16: an on one.
- 45:54Speaker 6: Day, kind of like a step up from the lemonade stand.
- 45:56Speaker 16: Yeah, basically what I can do, Yeah, but with really
- 45:59Speaker 16: cool like I think there were there some three D
- 46:00Speaker 16: modeling that was going on. The kids had, I mean
- 46:02Speaker 16: the technology and stuff that we didn't have, or the
- 46:04Speaker 16: attention span we didn't have, I guess grown up, but
- 46:07Speaker 16: as much as anything, so it was it's really cool
- 46:09Speaker 16: because it was so successful last year, we took it
- 46:12Speaker 16: from you know, one day to two days so it's
- 46:14Speaker 16: both Friday and Saturday. And Appalachian Power came on as
- 46:18Speaker 16: a sponsor this year because they saw the value of
- 46:20Speaker 16: trying to support our future business leaders, and I think
- 46:23Speaker 16: it's really nice. I mean, we probably have a couple
- 46:26Speaker 16: dozen entrepreneurs that will be there selling their goods until
- 46:31Speaker 16: they run out, and last year they did run out,
- 46:33Speaker 16: and I suspect they will, oh great.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Last year this young girl that was selling bracelets and
- 46:37Speaker 4: the mayor bought them all.
- 46:38Speaker 7: Oh that's what she meant.
- 46:39Speaker 19: And she even commissioned her and bought she commissioned her
- 46:42Speaker 19: for more this year. Yes, I'm also I want to
- 46:44Speaker 19: mention the we also have on Friday, we have an
- 46:46Speaker 19: ice cream social and we have six chalk artists coming
- 46:49Speaker 19: to do street art on the chalk our street chalk art.
- 46:52Speaker 6: Yeah, where the street art? Where the chalk came from?
- 46:56Speaker 6: Because when I go downtown, I'm like, where did that
- 46:58Speaker 6: come from? During w GOTDA?
- 46:59Speaker 19: So that's it this well, this is new this year,
- 47:00Speaker 19: but we're commissioning six local artists to do six three
- 47:04Speaker 19: foot squares going down the center of city Center. And yeah,
- 47:08Speaker 19: they'll be this firs time we're doing it and be great.
- 47:11Speaker 19: So everything's in city Center. It's like Plaza Family Fund Zone.
- 47:16Speaker 6: And if you get hungry, there's always the hot dog
- 47:18Speaker 6: eating contest.
- 47:19Speaker 16: The hot dog eating contest speaking about something that got
- 47:21Speaker 16: bigger to Tutor's Biscuit World, and I think people sometimes,
- 47:25Speaker 16: especially managing our Facebook page, people will be like, oh,
- 47:28Speaker 16: how come it's not a biscuit eating contest?
- 47:29Speaker 10: First of all, how many biscuits could you eat. But
- 47:32Speaker 10: Tutors is also very well known for their hot dogs.
- 47:34Speaker 6: So how many hot dogs have been eaten?
- 47:37Speaker 10: I think it was what thirty last year.
- 47:41Speaker 5: Like that.
- 47:41Speaker 10: Yeah, so last year we had folks who came two
- 47:44Speaker 10: years ago.
- 47:45Speaker 16: We did it two years ago and Tutors came on
- 47:46Speaker 16: board and they sponsored it, and then it got bigger
- 47:49Speaker 16: last year and this year we.
- 47:51Speaker 10: Had over one hundred and twenty entrants that wanted to
- 47:54Speaker 10: participate and we only had like.
- 47:55Speaker 16: Eight spots, so we have different heats this year, so
- 47:58Speaker 16: there'll be multiple people eating.
- 48:00Speaker 10: It is extremely fun.
- 48:02Speaker 16: It is one of those things to where it's like,
- 48:04Speaker 16: if you've never experienced the hot dog eating contests in person,
- 48:06Speaker 16: you're like, I don't know, trust me, it's a boatload
- 48:09Speaker 16: of fun because it is really fun to watch people
- 48:11Speaker 16: stuff their face with hot dogs and try to and
- 48:13Speaker 16: try to survive. And then everybody brings out their own
- 48:16Speaker 16: their own individual crowd. But that's really exciting as well.
- 48:19Speaker 16: And then I think you hit on it earlier, but
- 48:21Speaker 16: just to touch on at the United Ways Rubber Ducky Race,
- 48:23Speaker 16: when we think about the you know, we talk about
- 48:26Speaker 16: the history of the Regada that is obviously a huge
- 48:28Speaker 16: part of everything that has happened throughout the regatta, and
- 48:31Speaker 16: the United Way raises a ton of money that goes
- 48:34Speaker 16: right back into our community and that's a great thing.
- 48:36Speaker 16: They'll still be out there selling ducks, I imagine that's
- 48:38Speaker 16: where they're at right now, is out there selling ducks
- 48:41Speaker 16: in order to make sure that they can they can
- 48:43Speaker 16: raise their money. But that's going to drop noon off
- 48:45Speaker 16: the south Side Bridge. And that's also really interesting to
- 48:47Speaker 16: watch because I also like the mechanics of it because
- 48:50Speaker 16: our fire department goes out with these big nets in
- 48:52Speaker 16: order to catch all the ducks so they don't go
- 48:53Speaker 16: too far but that drop and then sort of being
- 48:56Speaker 16: the one to wait and see and see what duck's
- 49:01Speaker 16: going to win and who's gonna win. It's a whole
- 49:03Speaker 16: lot of fun and you know, and again it's it's
- 49:06Speaker 16: the United Way of Central West Virginia, which is just
- 49:10Speaker 16: one of the strongest partners we have in our entire community,
- 49:13Speaker 16: not only for the regatta, but just in everyday world
- 49:15Speaker 16: when we think about things like we've had, you know,
- 49:18Speaker 16: when we had the West Side gas crisis and we
- 49:20Speaker 16: have heating warming centers for folks in our community where
- 49:24Speaker 16: we have long events. The first people always in line
- 49:27Speaker 16: in the United Way, and and so come out and
- 49:29Speaker 16: support them, not only by buying a duck, but watching
- 49:31Speaker 16: the race as well, because we have I'm now told
- 49:35Speaker 16: live on the air, fifteen hundred ducks left. So that's
- 49:37Speaker 16: not very many considering how many that they sell overall.
- 49:40Speaker 16: So make sure they'll be out on the boulevard selling
- 49:43Speaker 16: the ducks until they until they run out of them.
- 49:45Speaker 10: And my guess is they'll run out on them by
- 49:46Speaker 10: the end of the day.
- 49:47Speaker 16: So i'd get there today because they'll they'll they'll run
- 49:50Speaker 16: on them pretty quick. But again I think, you know,
- 49:53Speaker 16: I mean, it's it really is a wonderful weekend in
- 49:59Speaker 16: our in our city, and we really are excited about it.
- 50:02Speaker 16: Not only do we want you to come out to
- 50:04Speaker 16: the regatta, but we want you to visit our local
- 50:06Speaker 16: businesses as well. They really stock up, they participate in this.
- 50:09Speaker 16: You know, having the Family Fund Zone, which is free
- 50:11Speaker 16: activities over in city centers like Plaza, lends itself for
- 50:14Speaker 16: people to walk into our restaurants. We walk into our bars,
- 50:16Speaker 16: go to our coffee shop, get some ice cream. You know,
- 50:19Speaker 16: we've got food vendors and we've got drink vendors on
- 50:21Speaker 16: the boulevard. But there is enough time throughout the next
- 50:25Speaker 16: four days to not only visit them, but to visit
- 50:27Speaker 16: our local businesses.
- 50:28Speaker 10: Check out our shops, you know.
- 50:29Speaker 16: We we've got so many amazing places to go to
- 50:32Speaker 16: in nice, eclectic places. You know, go see Chuck over
- 50:35Speaker 16: at the Purple Moon to pick up your antiques and
- 50:37Speaker 16: it's it's really you.
- 50:38Speaker 10: Know, and I'll say this too. Check out the regatta website.
- 50:42Speaker 16: I promise you. There are plenty of places to park.
- 50:44Speaker 16: There are plenty of places to park. It's not hard
- 50:47Speaker 16: to find a parking spot in downtown Ralston.
- 50:49Speaker 6: The parking building right beside the library night yeah, oh yeah.
- 50:53Speaker 16: Summer street garages open, the cinema garage is open, the
- 50:56Speaker 16: mall garages are open, the Gazette garage, the flat lots.
- 50:59Speaker 16: There are well over ten thousand parking spots to find
- 51:03Speaker 16: to get into the Regatta. And so don't be scared
- 51:05Speaker 16: away by that. You know, you might have to wait
- 51:07Speaker 16: a few minutes, but it really is a humongous weekend
- 51:11Speaker 16: in our city and a lot of work that goes
- 51:13Speaker 16: into it, and a lot of sponsors, and we're just
- 51:16Speaker 16: really really excited about it, and it.
- 51:18Speaker 10: Looks like knock on wood.
- 51:20Speaker 16: I won't be the person of jinxes, but I don't
- 51:22Speaker 16: want to say the things we don't want to say,
- 51:24Speaker 16: which is how pretty it is outside.
- 51:26Speaker 6: Yes, don't forget to hydrate this weekend. Absolutely, and so
- 51:29Speaker 6: many more things going on in regatta that we cannot
- 51:32Speaker 6: get in this morning. Oh my goodness, literally a boat load.
- 51:35Speaker 6: TJ's coming up next, Hi, TJ.
- 51:37Speaker 4: Bhie Breaking news.
- 51:38Speaker 21: The Supreme Court says today just released in their opinions
- 51:42Speaker 21: list they'll hear a case about which school sports teams
- 51:45Speaker 21: transgender students can join. They're hearing West Virginia versus Becky
- 51:51Speaker 21: Pepper Jackson, which is a long standing case about that
- 51:55Speaker 21: transgender girl in Bridgeport that runs track. Court saying they
- 51:59Speaker 21: will hear this case. This of course coming on the
- 52:01Speaker 21: heels of scurmetti next week, so precedent breaking news here.
- 52:05Speaker 4: We'll have JB.
- 52:06Speaker 21: Mccoskey coming in at ten oh six to outline the case.
