Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / David Smith: Iran-US ceasefire talks seem to be 'more optimistic than normal'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So even Iran apparently says progress has been made on
- 0:03Speaker 1: a peace deal or an extension of a ceasefire. At
- 0:05Speaker 1: least Rubio sees that, don't worry, the Americans aren't selling out,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and the.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Idea that somehow, as president, given everything he's already proved
- 0:13Speaker 2: he's willing to do, it's going to somehow agree to
- 0:16Speaker 2: a deal that ultimately winds up putting Iran in the
- 0:18Speaker 2: stronger position when it comes to nuclear ambitions, as.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Observed David Smith, Washington bureau chief for The Guardian, with
- 0:24Speaker 1: Me Live this morning. David, nice to have you on
- 0:25Speaker 1: the program. Is there a bit of a I feel
- 0:28Speaker 1: like there's a bit of a boy who cried wolf,
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're nearly got a deal. We've got a deal. Where
- 0:32Speaker 1: are we at?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Yes, that's right. We've been here so many times before,
- 0:37Speaker 3: haven't we? This one seems to be more optimistic than normal,
- 0:43Speaker 3: although Donald Trump has been staying on social media. Both
- 0:47Speaker 3: sides must take their time and get it right. There
- 0:49Speaker 3: can be no mistakes, and he's urging his representatives not
- 0:53Speaker 3: to rush into a deal right now. The situation appears
- 0:56Speaker 3: to be the US and Iran have some sort of
- 0:59Speaker 3: a means in principle to end this war, it would
- 1:04Speaker 3: mean reopening the Strait of horn Moves, which of course
- 1:07Speaker 3: has been that choke point that Iran has used as
- 1:10Speaker 3: leverage for so long. In the turn, Iran would commit
- 1:14Speaker 3: to dispose of its highly enriched Uranian because, of course,
- 1:18Speaker 3: the US says this is really all about curbing Iran's
- 1:22Speaker 3: nuclear program. And what I just said has been briefed
- 1:27Speaker 3: by a US official talking to reporters. We seem to
- 1:33Speaker 3: have rather less detail on, you know, Iran support for
- 1:39Speaker 3: proxies in the region, some of the other ongoing issues here.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And it's again we're in a kind of wait and
- 1:47Speaker 3: see posture. Certainly, when news started to emerge yesterday, lots
- 1:52Speaker 3: of commentators and politicians were we're jumping on this, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: you know, either Donald Trump was a great hero or
- 1:58Speaker 3: according to Iran hawks, this was a sort of terrible
- 2:00Speaker 3: sellout and Israel will be horrified as well. But it
- 2:03Speaker 3: does seem a little early to jump to any conclusions.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, as it always is. What about this guy that
- 2:09Speaker 1: was shot by Secret Service? They knew who he was,
- 2:12Speaker 1: Does that mean he was a bit of a troublemaker
- 2:13Speaker 1: or they haven't seen much about him yet?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Well, yes, this incident happened outside the White House yesterday.
- 2:23Speaker 3: A man approached the security checkpoint a place I know
- 2:29Speaker 3: well going to the White House and opened fire and
- 2:34Speaker 3: then he was shot by federal agents. And he was
- 2:37Speaker 3: already known to the Secret Service. According to court records.
- 2:40Speaker 3: He's twenty one years old. He had been involved in
- 2:45Speaker 3: a previous incident near the White House, and in that exchange,
- 2:52Speaker 3: a bystander was also struck. It's unclear whether they were
- 2:57Speaker 3: struck by the suspect or shot by the officers. Trump
- 3:00Speaker 3: at the time was in the White House but in
- 3:04Speaker 3: no imminent danger. He's claimed that the gunman had a
- 3:10Speaker 3: violent history and a possible obsession with the White House,
- 3:13Speaker 3: but we await to other details.
- 3:15Speaker 1: On that, Okay, David, appreciate the update. David Smith, Washington
- 3:18Speaker 1: bureau chief for The Guardian. For more from early edition
- 3:21Speaker 1: with Ryan Bridge, listen live to News Talks. It'd be
- 3:24Speaker 1: from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast on iHeartRadio.
