- 0:03Hello and welcome back to the episode of Bassett Lorenzi.
- 0:06How are you all doing if you're doing great?
- 0:08For today's episode, I want to talk about Funke Akindele.
- 0:11Funke Akindele is in hot waters or Funke Akindele.
- 0:15They've been bashing Funke Akindele since towards the end
- 0:19of last year over cinema space or cinema slots or even
- 0:24cinematic movies. Now for some of you who don't
- 0:27know, Funky Kindle is a Nollywood actress, a producer, a
- 0:31writer, a listen. Funky Kindle wears all the
- 0:35hearts and she started, you know, very humble.
- 0:39Most times Funky Kindle was playing Walker pass roles.
- 0:43We used to laugh at her then because all our movies were
- 0:45really just short, short, funny, funny kind of kids.
- 0:50Not like laughing at her, but because of the roles that she
- 0:54was played, it was funny. It was short, but you could
- 0:58regardless of the role, you will tell that this is Fuka Kindle.
- 1:01She will play it in her own way. And she used to complain then
- 1:05that producers weren't using her because she wasn't that
- 1:11conventional beauty. You know, she wasn't curvy like
- 1:17Messy Johnson. She does not have the face of
- 1:21Genevieve or the colour of Rita Dominic.
- 1:24So she was kind of in a weird space where she wasn't utilised
- 1:31in, you know, her maximum capacity until YouTube came
- 1:35along. Funky Kindle released the diary
- 1:39of Jennifer or Jennifer's diary, and that went viral.
- 1:44She produced that movie. She or that.
- 1:47Yeah, because it was a series and then it became a movie or it
- 1:51was a movie and then became a series.
- 1:53So since then, Funky Kindle has been going from strength to
- 1:57strength. She moved into producing cinema
- 2:00movies that was a blockbuster. Funky accidentally, you know,
- 2:04she's funny. So the way she promotes her
- 2:07movies, she dances, she sings, you know, she's all this because
- 2:12she's funny. So she it is easy for her to
- 2:15just do skits to promote her Movies.
- 2:18Now last year because for you know for some years now Funky
- 2:24Akindale has dominated the cinema world.
- 2:29I think Messi Igbi tried breaking in, he wasn't
- 2:33successful. Toya Imaku, she did well.
- 2:37Both Funky Akindale still dominated the cinema producer
- 2:45afoulin he tried that did not work in Yerdo in Yerdo tried.
- 2:52And we all know how she came out last year crying about how she
- 2:58wasn't getting cinematics slots. They were put in her movies, you
- 3:02know, later and listen, she just everybody was just complaining,
- 3:08especially last year. It was the end of last year.
- 3:10People produce movies so that they could sell or sell tickets
- 3:15in cinemas. And also Funke Akindili
- 3:20dominated the cinemas. Now, Nollywood producer and
- 3:25actor Kuler Aflion, he said he was in the movie production
- 3:30class or something like that for his seminar.
- 3:33And he was asked about, you know, cinema and how the current
- 3:38promotion of movies are. And he said that he's not
- 3:41willing to be dancing like Funke Akindili.
- 3:44So I think that got to Funke. I think she's had it because,
- 3:49you know, towards the end of last year, people said a whole
- 3:52lot about Funka Kindle, that she's bribing people, she's
- 3:56doing this, she's doing that. And one of the things that
- 4:00Cooley Fly on hinted on is that he doesn't want to make one or 2
- 4:05billion in box office and then get 10 million naira profits.
- 4:10You can imagine you, you know, produce a movie, get investors
- 4:16in and he said that before you pay investors and pay actors,
- 4:19pay everybody, probably your profit is just, you know, 10
- 4:22million naira. So he said he doesn't want to do
- 4:25any of those thing. So Funke did not like that.
- 4:31According to the story, he called, she called Kule a flyer.
- 4:35She called him to say certain things.
- 4:38Anyway, I'm just going to play a video where Kule was explaining
- 4:43the conversation he had with Funky Akin daily.
- 4:48OK, well, that's something I I was hoping I'll avoid.
- 4:52But for the benefit of, you know, our lovers, you know,
- 4:56people have reached out to say we know you didn't mean look,
- 5:00I'm a product of travelling theatre and travelling cinema,
- 5:04meaning our parents like will go around streets, you know, trying
- 5:09to get people to come to this theatre by dancing.
- 5:12And I've said this before, it is great.
- 5:15All right, for film over the years.
- 5:18I mean, I will take my children to the cinema and then we will
- 5:22be pretty much dragging people to say, look, come on, watch.
- 5:25I feel and I'm saying in recent times.
- 5:28But it for me is draining. And I never said anything was
- 5:34wrong with it. Listen, don't get called me
- 5:37yesterday and all she was saying, and that is why I felt
- 5:41maybe there was more to it than beyond.
- 5:44I don't know what you know. She called her and she said, oh,
- 5:46Mr Falina, I don't, I know you don't like me, but don't mention
- 5:51my name in your interviews. Was she angry or she wanted?
- 5:54No, she was yelling. Oh, and she dropped the phone
- 5:58after that. And I texted her and I said I
- 6:02don't know what you know must have caused this, but it's fine.
- 6:05And I explained a few things to her and that was it.
- 6:08Tony and I, Tony Abraham and I spoke until Tony said, I want,
- 6:13can you say that I've turned into a skit that I go what
- 6:16you're saying? And in our skit you were saying,
- 6:18people, please come and come and watch my film so I can make more
- 6:23than 10 million. The honest truth is my I was, it
- 6:28was a forum. It was a business, film business
- 6:31forum. And we had the cinema operators
- 6:35there and the cinema operators were asking me when are you
- 6:39coming back to cinema? And I said, I can't come to
- 6:43cinema if you cannot guarantee that I will make substantial
- 6:49money. Because if you make 2 million
- 6:51and I will repeat it, if you make 3 billion, I said it life
- 6:54more. Abdul was there DG or Ed of
- 6:58Census Board? A lot of you know, people were
- 7:00there. And I said, let's do the math.
- 7:03I've been, I've been doing this for almost 30 years.
- 7:06Let's do the maths. If we make 2 billion after the
- 7:11sharing and the tax deduction and all of that, what will
- 7:15probably come to you will be maybe 500.
- 7:18If you have stakeholders, investors that are more than two
- 7:23or three, what comes to you at the end of the day, you know,
- 7:27so, so it was simple mathematics.
- 7:30I have absolutely nothing against fun care.
- 7:32And I mentioned last week I was in Kaduna at Rama Film Festival
- 7:38and I was in a master class and I was addressing young people
- 7:43and I clearly said to them that if you want to adopt A model
- 7:47that I think you know will work for you now, they'll follow
- 7:50Funky Kindle is model. I'm going to get the video and
- 7:53I'll put it. And I said follow up because
- 7:56Funky started, you know, at a younger age and then she did
- 8:01Jennifer with minimal budget, which was a runaway success.
- 8:05Exactly. And I said, Jennifer, look was,
- 8:08you know, like, I mean, and I said from there, look at Funke's
- 8:12brand now she has grown, you know, he's a consistent growth.
- 8:17And I, and what I was saying is, look, I, I, I, I can't do what
- 8:23they're doing because I feel that how they have too much so
- 8:28much energy and he's working for them.
- 8:31As a matter of fact, you. Don't have?
- 8:33Energy. No, no, no.
- 8:33Listen, do you know how many things I do?
- 8:36I run a result, all right? I have a cultural centre in
- 8:40Lagos, right? I have an Academy that trains
- 8:44people like you know, and we have partners that are not even
- 8:48Nigerians. So I do both.
- 8:50Film is my core film gave birth to all of these other things.
- 8:55So I do things in the ecosystem of, you know, cinema, film and
- 9:01television. So I have I, I mean, I ask our
- 9:05colleagues, I support people's people's project.
- 9:08I support people's initiative. I don't know what, you know, got
- 9:13into Funke, but I have absolutely nothing against that.
- 9:17And I didn't say they shouldn't dance.
- 9:20I just said that we can have as well fact that three days ago at
- 9:24the conference, Mahabudu said the same thing.
- 9:27Mahabudu said, oh, I gave it to Funke and Toy.
- 9:30But the reason why she's opening a platform, she's opening a new
- 9:35distribution platform, she said is because the cinema thing, you
- 9:39know, for her, she's not sure. And that is why she announced
- 9:43there's a film they're about to do and they're releasing in
- 9:46this, but they are releasing in December.
- 9:49And she already announced now and she pulled, she brought
- 9:54together like make the major cinema owners so that everybody
- 9:58shares the risk. I think the decentralisation of
- 10:05distribution in Nigeria has caused a whole lot of problems.
- 10:09When it was Alaba International, when the Ebo traders were
- 10:14involved in the distribution of Nollywood movies, it was not
- 10:20this complicated. It was straightforward.
- 10:24They were, they knew exactly who they were selling to.
- 10:26They had the clients, they had the customers, they had people
- 10:30who buy in bulk and then sell. Yes, they were piracy, people
- 10:36pirated movies, but everybody made money.
- 10:40I think what YouTube has created is, you know, everybody can now
- 10:46produce movies, put it on YouTube and you know, take your
- 10:50chances. Cinemas has always been there,
- 10:53but I think cinema right now, they took it to the next level
- 10:57where people or producers or actors now use cinemas as red
- 11:04carpets. You know, it was, it's more like
- 11:08the Oscars or the Met galas where people, you're not just
- 11:13coming to watch a movie, especially during the premiere,
- 11:17they dress. So they spend a whole lot of
- 11:20money. People or producers.
- 11:22Since actors and actresses moved into movie production, it has
- 11:27become a very, very money consuming venture.
- 11:32YouTube movies, yes, anybody can produce and put on YouTube, but
- 11:35there's no guarantee. Blessing Sunday.
- 11:41She's complained that she's produced.
- 11:44She spent over I think 100 million naira producing movie
- 11:48that she has not even made-up to 10 million back.
- 11:51So there are risk to every production or every distribution
- 11:57channel. But I think what he was trying
- 12:00to see is that especially in cinema or cinema movies or
- 12:06movies that are people produce specifically for cinemas.
- 12:11Because you know, there are different channels.
- 12:14Some people produce for Prime, some people produce for Netflix,
- 12:19some people produce for cinema YouTube.
- 12:22So some listen. So people who are producing for
- 12:26cinema spends a whole lot of money because you still have to
- 12:29market this. If you put it on Prime, you know
- 12:33that Prime is going to Amazon is going to promote the movie.
- 12:36If you put it on Netflix, Netflix will promote the movie.
- 12:40If you put it on YouTube, YouTube, you have to put it on a
- 12:44platform where they have like maybe millions of subscribers or
- 12:48you have to promote. If it's your channel, you have
- 12:50to promote that movie. So there are so many ways to
- 12:53promote a movie, but cinema, you have to dance, you have to reach
- 12:59out to people who you want to watch those movies.
- 13:01It has to be grassroots. It has to be communicating
- 13:05one-on-one to people. And the way Funky Kindle has
- 13:08done it is producing skits, paying, you know, influencers,
- 13:15getting influencers to, you know, dance to those movies,
- 13:21wear the T-shirts, wear the branding.
- 13:24They do T-shirts. They do track suits.
- 13:26They do a whole lot of things to produce, to promote the movies.
- 13:30Now, what Kunle is saying is that that cost a whole lot of
- 13:33money. It will cost you maybe 99% of
- 13:39your budget to produce and to market or to promote that movie.
- 13:46And he is not willing to do that.
- 13:48Now Funja Kindle's case is different because I don't think
- 13:53she she's into so many things. She's into real estate.
- 13:56She has so many clients that pay for advert placements in her
- 14:01movies. So before even production, she
- 14:04has recovered all the money that she's using to produce that
- 14:10movie. Even the promotional aspects of
- 14:12the of the whole thing, people still putting money to promote
- 14:16those movies because they want their brand to be shown.
- 14:20So if you are not from Kayakin Daily, if you don't have that
- 14:24reach, if you don't have that coverage, if you don't have
- 14:28those brands backing you up, then you can't make money from
- 14:34those things. You can't make money from
- 14:36cinemas because you can make 1 billion, two billion, just like
- 14:42Kuliaf said and your take home will be 10,010 million naira.
- 14:47If you are willing to take that risk, then it's fine.
- 14:50What you need to say that you know, she, she didn't make
- 14:52anything. She has investors.
- 14:54There's she didn't make anything because she's thinking making 1
- 14:58billion. It's just like, oh, making 2
- 15:00billion in cinemas is just producing movies, putting it out
- 15:03there and cinemas giving you slots.
- 15:05It doesn't work that way. So I think people are hating on
- 15:11Funke because she has figured out how to market her brand.
- 15:16It took her a long time. It took Funke a very long time
- 15:20to know what people need, work on it and get built.
- 15:27You know, a village around her, a village of people who are
- 15:31willing to invest, not just invest for something in return,
- 15:34but to invest in promotional aspects, in adverse placement.
- 15:39So she makes her money. I can understand why she's angry
- 15:41because it, it is too much. Last year people were bashing
- 15:45her. People talked a whole lot about
- 15:46Funka kindly saying that she's stopping everybody from making
- 15:49money in cinemas. So I, I guess why she's, she's
- 15:53fed up. She's had it.
- 15:54So what do you think? Do you think that Funke is
- 15:59actually kind of monopolising cinema, or do you think that
- 16:05people or actresses who produce movies are just lazy?
- 16:08They don't want to do what Funke is doing.
- 16:10They don't want to pay for promotion.
- 16:12They don't want to because show business, movie business is show
- 16:16business. If you're focusing just on the
- 16:19show and not looking at the business side of things, looking
- 16:23at the the advert placements, looking at people who are going
- 16:26to sponsor your movie, sponsors are very important, especially
- 16:30if you're going to sink in millions of naira in the movie.
- 16:33You make sure that people who are sponsoring you are not just
- 16:36people who are waiting for for returns on their investment,
- 16:40people who want to place their products on your movie and they
- 16:44are paying you for that advert placement.
- 16:48That is where the money is. And until Kule and his
- 16:54counterparts realise that this is what Funke Akindeli is doing,
- 16:59this is how she makes her money, they're always going to be
- 17:01complaining. They're always going to be
- 17:03ranting more abudu. I think what she's doing, she's
- 17:07just trying to create her own ecosystem, her own distribution
- 17:11channel, which there's nothing wrong with that, but you still
- 17:14have to advertise it and you either pay influencers or you
- 17:21dance. So what do you think?
- 17:24Do you think that they're just hating on Funky or do you think
- 17:26that Funky kindly is just stopping everybody from making
- 17:31billions and keeping their billions?
- 17:33Let me know what you think. Please subscribe to this channel
- 17:35like like I shared. Thank you very much for
- 17:37watching. Bye bye.
