- 0:04Speaker 1: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 0:08Speaker 1: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 0:11Speaker 1: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 0:15Speaker 1: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 0:18Speaker 1: home of the Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Utah football one week from today. The season kicks off
- 0:30Speaker 2: in seven days. And on Thursdays, we talk with QB
- 0:34Speaker 2: number one, Devin Dampier, Dishing with Dev, brought to you
- 0:37Speaker 2: by Culligan, by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and by
- 0:41Speaker 2: America First Credit Union.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Dev in studio with us. Hello, sir. Good to see you.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Hey, good to be back up in here.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Football season is upon us. Now, let's talk about camp first.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Camp is now in the rearview mirror. Morgan Scali's first
- 0:56Speaker 2: camp is the head coach. Camp is never fun. Camp
- 0:59Speaker 2: is never easy. But give me your description of what
- 1:03Speaker 2: this first camp under Morgan Scali was from the player perspective.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought it was a success.
- 1:08Speaker 5: Right after our last practice, I made sure I went
- 1:10Speaker 5: up to Coach Scali and just let him know. I
- 1:12Speaker 5: thought he handled being a head coach's first fall camp
- 1:15Speaker 5: was very successful. The way he went about camp was
- 1:20Speaker 5: to get as much done at a high speed When
- 1:28Speaker 5: we do our workouts, it needs to be 100%. There
- 1:31Speaker 5: needs to be no letdown. But then he's also putting
- 1:34Speaker 5: in analytics of how much we're running, making sure we're
- 1:38Speaker 5: hitting our top speeds every week just to make sure
- 1:41Speaker 5: no one's pulling hammies. Just the small things like that,
- 1:44Speaker 5: you could tell that he was taking everything into consideration
- 1:48Speaker 5: and just trying to make it best healthy-wise and also
- 1:51Speaker 5: being able to develop.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It seems like, talking to different people about this, that
- 1:56Speaker 2: it was intense work. He values that intense work, but
- 2:01Speaker 2: it doesn't have to be long.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Is that fair?
- 2:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's the right way to put it. That's
- 2:06Speaker 5: what I mean by the 100%. When we're out there,
- 2:09Speaker 5: it's straight go. It's straight go. No time to waste,
- 2:12Speaker 5: but it makes it better for us. It feels like
- 2:14Speaker 5: we have more off time.
- 2:16Speaker 2: More or less, you're a quarterback, so contact on quarterbacks.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But more or less contact than what you've experienced recently
- 2:24Speaker 2: at other places like when you were at New Mexico
- 2:25Speaker 2: and even last year.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say he kept that kind of the same.
- 2:30Speaker 5: He gets on the defensive, they get like a foot
- 2:33Speaker 5: away from me. He makes sure, do not get near
- 2:36Speaker 5: Devin at all, no matter what the circumstances.
- 2:39Speaker 2: What about, if I'm asking Way Sean this question, if
- 2:42Speaker 2: I'm asking Daniel Way this question, was it more physical,
- 2:47Speaker 2: equally as physical?
- 2:48Speaker 3: I mean, because one of the.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Big things, and you're probably already aware of this, year
- 2:54Speaker 2: by year, right? We examine what the tackling looks like
- 2:59Speaker 2: in the first few games of the season. And then
- 3:03Speaker 2: you go back to the coaching staff in the media,
- 3:05Speaker 2: we do at least and say, uh, what's with all
- 3:07Speaker 2: the missed tackles or looks like no missed tackles this year.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Did you, tackle more in camp or, Hey, there's a
- 3:13Speaker 2: couple more injuries at campus here.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Were you being too physical in camp?
- 3:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And it's impossible to win if you're the head coach,
- 3:19Speaker 2: but that's why I'm asking the question is you want
- 3:22Speaker 2: guys to hit the ground running and be ready week
- 3:26Speaker 2: one against Idaho, but also you want to make sure
- 3:28Speaker 2: that you're not beating up the bodies too much.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So was it not for the quarterback, but was it
- 3:34Speaker 3: a physical camp?
- 3:36Speaker 5: Um, I would say it was a physical camp, uh,
- 3:39Speaker 5: O-line and D-line for sure. I mean, they're blocking each
- 3:41Speaker 5: other every single play. I would say there was a
- 3:46Speaker 5: little bit of, again, the analytics. He was putting in
- 3:49Speaker 5: how many times he thinks it would be useful to
- 3:52Speaker 5: start tackling, and we did some of that near the
- 3:57Speaker 5: middle slash end of camp just so tackling feels more
- 4:00Speaker 5: familiar for, again, game one.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Situation. I think it was handled well, though.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I think.
- 4:08Speaker 5: It was never like the whole entire day is this tackle.
- 4:10Speaker 5: There was periods where we made a tackle. Then there
- 4:13Speaker 5: was periods where we let it be easy, thud tempo.
- 4:16Speaker 5: So I thought it was good. I thought asking the guys,
- 4:19Speaker 5: no one was ever complaining about, oh, it's a tackle
- 4:21Speaker 5: day and things like that.
- 4:23Speaker 2: For you, obviously, when the lights come on next Thursday,
- 4:27Speaker 2: they're trying to tackle you. Everyone's trying to tackle you.
- 4:31Speaker 2: the right thing to do for a coaching staff is
- 4:33Speaker 2: don't touch the quarterback in practice. Don't go anywhere near him.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Don't roll onto his ankle. Don't swat his hand when
- 4:40Speaker 2: he's throwing a pass and dislocate his finger, whatever.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Right?
- 4:43Speaker 2: So you're supposed to bubble wrap your quarterback. You're capable of,
- 4:46Speaker 2: of absorbing impact. You can spin away from stuff. You've
- 4:49Speaker 2: got the quicks, right? But like, how do you practice that?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Your evasiveness, your, your breaking of tackles when it's not
- 4:56Speaker 2: happening in practice.
- 4:59Speaker 4: You know?
- 5:01Speaker 3: Because I imagine there's a challenge to it, right?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Because the first time you really get hit this season
- 5:07Speaker 2: is going to be in live game reps.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And that might be crazy. I mean, I'm thinking of, like,
- 5:14Speaker 2: from the combat sports perspective, right? Like, when you're fighting,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you've got to put in hard sparring rounds during camp.
- 5:21Speaker 3: If you don't, you're going to go crazy the first
- 5:24Speaker 3: time you get hit hard in the actual fight.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 3: You're not allowed a hard sparring round. They don't take
- 5:30Speaker 3: that risk.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So the first time you get punched.
- 5:33Speaker 4: It's game one.
- 5:34Speaker 3: It's game one. How do you handle it?
- 5:37Speaker 5: I guess it's something I've grown up to be in now.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Now that I'm in this position of my fourth year
- 5:43Speaker 5: in college, I guess I just happen to get used
- 5:45Speaker 5: to it.
- 5:46Speaker 4: But that first hit, definitely, I feel it. It's like, okay,
- 5:50Speaker 4: I'm back in football mode.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Your body's like, all right, yep, that's what that feels like.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:54Speaker 3: We hope it's from like a corner.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Yeah, hopefully.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Instead of a DM.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Someone push me out of bounds. This is going to
- 6:00Speaker 4: be a little love town.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Oh, that's amazing. All right.
- 6:04Speaker 2: So for the fans who maybe have not ever been
- 6:07Speaker 2: part of the transition from camp practices to game prep
- 6:11Speaker 2: to install type practices, school year starts, schedule changes a
- 6:15Speaker 2: little bit. Describe that transition and maybe the major differences
- 6:19Speaker 2: in how practices and workouts are conducted now that it's
- 6:22Speaker 2: not camp.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Yeah, so again, camp is more about, I mean, obviously
- 6:29Speaker 5: we're going against each other. We're trying to put in
- 6:32Speaker 5: plays that we feel really confident about to bring into
- 6:35Speaker 5: the season, and so is defense. They're trying to figure
- 6:38Speaker 5: out what ways they like to line up against certain
- 6:41Speaker 5: formations and stuff like that. So the biggest difference is
- 6:45Speaker 5: now we have scout teams. Players have been assigned to
- 6:49Speaker 5: have their scout roles now, and now we're trying to
- 6:52Speaker 5: give the best look that, Whoever we're going to play
- 6:54Speaker 5: against that week, we want to be able to practice
- 6:56Speaker 5: our plays against that type of look, what we think
- 6:58Speaker 5: we're going to get. There's more preparation for sure. This
- 7:03Speaker 5: is where the film gets, I guess you could say,
- 7:06Speaker 5: more serious for me where I do clock in those hours,
- 7:09Speaker 5: just try to see the little tendencies, what a defense
- 7:11Speaker 5: can do and stuff like that.
- 7:13Speaker 2: As a guy who unfortunately spent way too much time
- 7:15Speaker 2: on the scout team, Do.
- 7:19Speaker 3: You have good looks? I know the coaching staff, right?
- 7:22Speaker 2: They do their best to put guys in a position
- 7:25Speaker 2: to where they can give you an approximation of what
- 7:28Speaker 2: you're going to see in game. But there's a reason
- 7:30Speaker 2: scout team guys are scout team guys, right? And the
- 7:33Speaker 2: speed can be a little bit different. The size is
- 7:35Speaker 2: certainly going to be a little bit different. Obviously, contact.
- 7:38Speaker 2: They're not letting scout players especially play. come and hit
- 7:41Speaker 2: the quarterback and things like that. But there's also the
- 7:44Speaker 2: question of depth on teams now because of the transfer
- 7:47Speaker 2: portal and because it used to be right. Scout team
- 7:50Speaker 2: guys could be a future all American. He's just a
- 7:53Speaker 2: freshman red shirting right now. There's less of that in
- 7:55Speaker 2: modern day college football. So are you getting good looks from,
- 7:59Speaker 2: from an athleticism perspective from the scouts?
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 5: You know, coach, coach Galley was a scout team player
- 8:06Speaker 5: for more than two years. So, he embodies that into
- 8:09Speaker 5: our scout players that, like, when you're out there, like,
- 8:12Speaker 5: take advantage of what's happening for you. You're able to, like,
- 8:16Speaker 5: for the scout defense, they're able to go against the
- 8:19Speaker 5: one offense. They're able to get to see talent going
- 8:24Speaker 5: against them every single day. So it's good for them
- 8:25Speaker 5: to take those reps. And same for our offense going
- 8:28Speaker 5: against their defense. I mean, they get one's defense playing
- 8:31Speaker 5: against them, and they can just perfect their craft. So,
- 8:35Speaker 5: you know, Coach Galley is big on embodying that role of,
- 8:39Speaker 5: If you are a scout player, do what you do.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Try to be as much into it as you can.
- 8:46Speaker 2: This is what they have brought to you by Culligan Water,
- 8:48Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, and America First Credit Union
- 8:51Speaker 2: here on the Sean O'Connell Show. So the end of
- 8:55Speaker 2: camp also a lot of times signifies really the end
- 8:58Speaker 2: of some of these position battles that have been happening
- 9:01Speaker 2: in camp. And we talked last week, and I was like,
- 9:04Speaker 2: who would the starting offensive line be? And you're like,
- 9:07Speaker 2: I don't know. Is there any more clarity? And no
- 9:11Speaker 2: one's going to tell me who those starting five are.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't expect you to. But do you feel like
- 9:15Speaker 2: now that camp is closed, the clarity there has been established?
- 9:21Speaker 5: I would say maybe three. Three of the spots are.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But again, we're still, I guess. Certain players do certain
- 9:30Speaker 5: things better. Which three spots? But, yeah, certain players have,
- 9:35Speaker 5: you know, their own skill set on what they do.
- 9:37Speaker 5: So I guess kind of depending.
- 9:40Speaker 3: On the vibe.
- 9:40Speaker 5: But, you know, I'm glad we have depth. I'm glad
- 9:42Speaker 5: that we have this problem where we're trying to figure
- 9:45Speaker 5: out who goes in because that just means the next
- 9:47Speaker 5: guy is able to play.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Could you see a situation where, I mean, almost always
- 9:54Speaker 2: in football, the starting five is the starting five. And
- 9:56Speaker 2: unless someone gets hurt or whatever, it's that starting five.
- 10:00Speaker 2: given some of the flexibility or the differentiation and skill
- 10:03Speaker 2: set or things like that could you see a situation
- 10:05Speaker 2: where this year's offensive line is handled a little bit
- 10:08Speaker 2: more like other position groups are where there is like
- 10:12Speaker 2: regular substitution or Jordan Gross Kevin McGiven do they want
- 10:17Speaker 2: to make sure it is a starting five By the
- 10:19Speaker 2: time you roll out an actual game plan.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Yeah, for the most part, I think you want a
- 10:24Speaker 4: starting five.
- 10:25Speaker 5: But I could imagine, you know, the first game we
- 10:29Speaker 5: just dinkle around, just probably show those different groups of
- 10:33Speaker 5: guys that's up there in that front five and just
- 10:37Speaker 5: kind of see how they work in a real game situation.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Last year, the starting five was obviously fantastic. but then there,
- 10:43Speaker 2: there was a lot of big body packages. There's jumbo stuff, right?
- 10:47Speaker 2: So it was like, you had like the starting five,
- 10:49Speaker 2: but then also like the starting six sometimes. And now
- 10:52Speaker 2: you got these Rhino packages and stuff. So it's like,
- 10:56Speaker 2: we're talking about potentially six or seven big body blockers
- 10:59Speaker 2: that they're going to be using.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:01Speaker 5: We, we get in, we make it real stressful for
- 11:03Speaker 5: the defense. You got to prepare for every single thing
- 11:06Speaker 5: when you're a DC going against us.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Uh, Last week when we talked, we touched on way
- 11:13Speaker 2: Sean a lot.
- 11:14Speaker 3: We talked about your wide receiving core.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I don't think we had a good conversation about Hunter
- 11:18Speaker 2: Andrews and what role he could play in this offense.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And obviously we saw some flashes from him last year,
- 11:24Speaker 2: this time of the year, last year, and then an
- 11:27Speaker 2: injury kind of washed all that away. The coaching staff
- 11:30Speaker 2: at that point, wasn't a hundred percent sure what they
- 11:32Speaker 2: wanted to do with them. Is he a running back?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Is he a tight end? Is he a hybrid of
- 11:36Speaker 2: those things? What sort of, Description would you give to
- 11:41Speaker 2: his role in this year's offense if you could characterize it?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 5: I guess, man, I think he's like a true playmaker
- 11:53Speaker 5: when you talk about, like if you could build someone
- 11:57Speaker 5: like on Madden to like be able to play every
- 12:01Speaker 5: skill position.
- 12:02Speaker 4: It would be Hunter.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Like he's tall enough, he's big enough to play tight end,
- 12:07Speaker 5: he's physical enough to actually block. if a linebacker wants
- 12:10Speaker 5: to come in and, you know, he's able to add
- 12:12Speaker 5: himself in protection. And then he's also faster than the linebackers.
- 12:16Speaker 5: He's also able to take a handoff and make positive
- 12:19Speaker 5: yards out of that. So Hunter, like he's, he literally
- 12:22Speaker 5: does everything. He, he finds value in just being able
- 12:25Speaker 5: to be on the field. Like we can trust him
- 12:27Speaker 5: to be in any position and he's, he's.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Going to go ball out.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Utah fans aren't going to like this comparison, but like
- 12:33Speaker 2: Taysom Hill, what he was in the NFL, obviously a
- 12:36Speaker 2: little bit more quarterback situation for him, but like, I
- 12:40Speaker 2: see Mac G using Hunter Andrews in that kind of
- 12:43Speaker 2: a role where, like you said earlier with the blocking schemes,
- 12:46Speaker 2: like a defense is just going to be like, what,
- 12:47Speaker 2: what the hell, what are they doing with this guy now?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 3: And you got to stay prepared for all of it. Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 4: He, he causes a lot of stress. So, you know, I'm,
- 12:55Speaker 4: I'm happy he's on my team.
- 12:57Speaker 2: That's nice for you and for everyone cheering for these
- 13:01Speaker 2: youths in the 2026 campaign. Uh, some big picture stuff here.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I know you focus on Idaho. You focus on week one, uh, but,
- 13:10Speaker 2: as the, the game plan comes together, the playbook really
- 13:14Speaker 2: comes together because some of camp is experimentation with what's
- 13:17Speaker 2: working and what's not working and all that stuff.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Are you, I won't say satisfied.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Are you happy with the progression of the offense from
- 13:26Speaker 2: the first day of install back in the spring to now?
- 13:29Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:30Speaker 5: I think just having the amount of meetings, us and
- 13:35Speaker 5: the receivers together, like just having those type of meetings and,
- 13:39Speaker 5: Even me stopping by in the O-line meetings every once
- 13:41Speaker 5: in a while just talking about stuff. I feel like
- 13:45Speaker 5: we've created offense. It's our offense now. And Mac G,
- 13:50Speaker 5: he gives us that authority to make the offense ours.
- 13:53Speaker 5: We started making checks and stuff that hasn't really necessarily
- 13:58Speaker 5: been taught to us. Just small things like that where
- 14:02Speaker 5: we're making offense us where it feels like we embodied it.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I think you're probably not this type of guy, but
- 14:11Speaker 2: you also have friends and family that are going to
- 14:12Speaker 2: be sending you links and showing you where you appear.
- 14:16Speaker 2: You know you're on the Davey O'Brien watch list. You
- 14:18Speaker 2: know that ESPN is like, this is the top 15
- 14:21Speaker 2: quarterback in the nation, whatever. How do you react to
- 14:25Speaker 2: the external expectation that these random publications and award watch
- 14:30Speaker 2: lists and stuff like that, how do you think about
- 14:34Speaker 2: those things as you go about your daily business?
- 14:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Um, man, I try to, I try to stay off
- 14:38Speaker 5: the internet when season starts scrolling up. I'm just, I'm
- 14:42Speaker 5: not big into seeing myself. I be telling my mom
- 14:44Speaker 5: and dad, don't be sending me nothing during the season.
- 14:46Speaker 5: I don't want to see it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I'm okay.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Like I'm okay. I'm a, just let, just let me
- 14:52Speaker 4: keep going week by week. Let me keep balling.
- 14:53Speaker 3: And you know, my mom and dad, I just ruined
- 14:56Speaker 3: all that. I just told Deb where he is on
- 14:59Speaker 3: all the watch lists.
- 15:00Speaker 5: But you know, they're, I'm so happy that they get
- 15:03Speaker 5: excited about those things. And they're so involved in, my
- 15:07Speaker 5: whole entire football journey. So I know it's so exciting
- 15:10Speaker 5: for them, but I'm like, keep it away from me.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Let me, let me lock in. Let me do what
- 15:13Speaker 5: I got to do.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Cause none of it matters to the end.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I think I understand that mentality, but articulate it for me.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Why do you not want to know where the athletic
- 15:25Speaker 2: says you belong ranking with all the other quarterbacks?
- 15:27Speaker 3: And why do you not want to pay attention to
- 15:30Speaker 3: that stuff?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I think there's, I think the normal things I get is, like, oh,
- 15:37Speaker 5: and maybe he runs too much.
- 15:41Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 15:42Speaker 5: People come up with, like, the craziest narratives I've ever
- 15:45Speaker 5: heard of.
- 15:46Speaker 3: It's the blurb, right? It's the blurb that bothers you?
- 15:49Speaker 5: Yeah, or, like, oh, this guy threw for more yards
- 15:52Speaker 5: than him, or he had a, like, just stuff that
- 15:56Speaker 5: would make me start to question my gameplay and how
- 15:59Speaker 5: I'd want to go about things. I never want other
- 16:01Speaker 5: people to tell me how I should play football, like,
- 16:05Speaker 5: I was able to get myself in this position of
- 16:08Speaker 5: all the great coaches that's got me here and things
- 16:10Speaker 5: like that. And I just want to continue to trust
- 16:13Speaker 5: in my game, play how I play, not let others dictate.
- 16:16Speaker 2: That does make sense. With respect to that narrative, right?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Two dependent on the legs or his arm is this
- 16:25Speaker 2: or it's that. I feel like what we saw from
- 16:29Speaker 2: you last year was excellent quarterback play where you could
- 16:31Speaker 2: do it all. The asterisk, if there is one, was
- 16:36Speaker 2: we don't really know because of the health problem what
- 16:39Speaker 2: the ceiling of that looks like.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Is that fair?
- 16:43Speaker 2: Where it's like when you watch last year's film, even
- 16:47Speaker 2: in games where you played great, maybe you didn't feel great.
- 16:51Speaker 3: So I look at some of those numbers.
- 16:53Speaker 2: That's a hell of a game from Dev. Would it
- 16:55Speaker 2: have been even better? if both of his legs worked properly.
- 16:58Speaker 3: You know what I mean? For sure.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Is that the right way for us to be viewing
- 17:02Speaker 2: our expectations of you for this year?
- 17:05Speaker 4: Yeah, no.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I mean, even out of myself, I'm expecting myself to, like,
- 17:11Speaker 5: I would say this is the first fall camp where
- 17:13Speaker 5: I felt like it was, playing out there never got
- 17:17Speaker 5: too fast for me. Like, I felt like, you know,
- 17:19Speaker 5: I've been here before. The game's really slowed down. where
- 17:23Speaker 5: it didn't slow down during camp. I got in there,
- 17:26Speaker 5: and I was already prepared. I feel like I'm at
- 17:29Speaker 5: a level where I should be able to be at
- 17:31Speaker 5: my best every single game.
- 17:34Speaker 2: We already talked about last week the chemistry with your
- 17:40Speaker 2: receivers and that kind of thing. What about throwing motion, footwork,
- 17:45Speaker 2: the mechanics of being a passer? do you have to
- 17:49Speaker 2: tweak things like that because you were adjusting again to some,
- 17:52Speaker 2: like a lack of a base last year, your arm
- 17:54Speaker 2: angle probably had to be a little bit different or
- 17:56Speaker 2: you were throwing more with your shoulder than with your
- 17:58Speaker 2: hips because you had all these injuries and stuff like that.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Was there an adjustment period of getting back to throwing
- 18:04Speaker 2: like a healthy person?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say, you know, that's, that started, um,
- 18:09Speaker 5: as soon as I could throw a ball, it took,
- 18:10Speaker 5: it took about six, eight weeks for me to be
- 18:14Speaker 5: able to throw a football again after my surgery. And, um,
- 18:17Speaker 5: you know, that was, about kind of spring coming in.
- 18:20Speaker 5: So I was able to get in Arizona, get back
- 18:22Speaker 5: with my QB trainer, just hitting those types of things.
- 18:25Speaker 5: But man, in game, it's, it's so rare that, that
- 18:29Speaker 5: you get the exact clean pocket. Like when there's no
- 18:32Speaker 5: movement where you don't have to make arm angle throws.
- 18:36Speaker 5: And you know, that's something my coaches like about me
- 18:40Speaker 5: that I'm able to change my arm angle at times
- 18:42Speaker 5: to be able to get the ball through the D
- 18:44Speaker 5: lineman and stuff like that. So there's a little bit of,
- 18:49Speaker 5: Things going into it, just the way we call plays,
- 18:51Speaker 5: the way we read through things, obviously changed the way
- 18:54Speaker 5: my footsteps work. But, man, ultimately, you know, I feel
- 18:59Speaker 5: like I'm in a good spot where I can make
- 19:01Speaker 5: any throw.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Devon Dampier for a couple more minutes here on the
- 19:04Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show. Edition with Dev brought to you by
- 19:06Speaker 2: Culligan Water, Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and America First
- 19:11Speaker 2: Credit Union.
- 19:11Speaker 4: You are....
- 19:15Speaker 2: More popular than you were last year. You're more established
- 19:17Speaker 2: than you were last year. You are thought of highly,
- 19:20Speaker 2: not only locally, but nationally as a quarterback with that
- 19:23Speaker 2: comes opportunities and IL opportunities, who knows what else, right?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Part of being a modern day college football player, especially
- 19:33Speaker 2: quarterback is you also have to be a good businessman.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Have you been able to put that in the proper
- 19:38Speaker 2: box as the season approaches as you know, these, interviews
- 19:43Speaker 2: like this more common, et cetera, et cetera. Um, how
- 19:47Speaker 2: is the extra curricular football stuff been now that you're
- 19:53Speaker 2: a more firmly established starter as the season approaches?
- 19:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's been a lot more me now.
- 20:00Speaker 5: I think I came in a little bit more on
- 20:03Speaker 5: the nervous side of last year, just not fully expressing
- 20:07Speaker 5: who I was, I guess you could say in a way.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Um, but man, this year, you know, just.
- 20:14Speaker 5: The, the amount of respect people are allowing me to have. And, um,
- 20:19Speaker 5: you know, just, it's allowed me to feel like, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 5: I can be myself at all times. And that's just
- 20:23Speaker 5: something that I've kind of told myself I want to
- 20:26Speaker 5: do this year. You know, I want to be myself
- 20:27Speaker 5: no matter the situation. And, uh, that just goes into
- 20:30Speaker 5: my leadership also, like that translates on the field. I
- 20:33Speaker 5: don't want to be the guy where, you know, if
- 20:35Speaker 5: they score first and then we don't score, I'm, being
- 20:38Speaker 5: pouty on the sideline. Like I want to be the
- 20:40Speaker 5: same guy. I want everyone to, I never want to
- 20:43Speaker 5: switch up for any situation. So, and I think it's,
- 20:46Speaker 5: it's honestly some people have been enjoying, I've been getting
- 20:49Speaker 5: feedback about it. Just they're like, man, I've never had
- 20:52Speaker 5: an interview like you. It's, it's very, you're very uplifting
- 20:55Speaker 5: and very yourself. And you know, that's just something I
- 20:58Speaker 5: want to give off.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Speaking of leadership, the way that the leadership dynamic on
- 21:04Speaker 2: a slightly remade roster is, has developed through camp and
- 21:08Speaker 2: in the first week of, you know, installing things like that.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Any surprises for you? Is it the guys that you
- 21:12Speaker 2: thought were going to be those guys?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Yeah. For the most. Yeah. Cause I don't know.
- 21:19Speaker 5: There's this guy, you can tell the other guys in
- 21:21Speaker 5: the locker room too, that have influence on others. They're
- 21:24Speaker 5: able to say stuff and, you know, you see guys
- 21:26Speaker 5: turn their head and they really listen. So we already
- 21:30Speaker 5: had our leadership council group and, you know, you could
- 21:33Speaker 5: tell those guys were, You can tell they're all taking
- 21:36Speaker 5: steps in their own leadership role.
- 21:37Speaker 4: As well going through fall camp.
- 21:42Speaker 2: There's different types of leadership on football teams, right? Like
- 21:45Speaker 2: Morgan Scali, your head coach now, he was the great
- 21:49Speaker 2: player who was also a great vocal leader. And the
- 21:53Speaker 2: other two best players on the team on that year's team,
- 21:56Speaker 2: offensive lineman who never said a word, Chris Kamoyatu, scariest
- 22:00Speaker 2: guy on the planet. Never said a dang thing. Alex
- 22:03Speaker 2: Smith was the best quarterback in the country. Didn't really
- 22:09Speaker 2: say a lot in the locker room. So who fills
- 22:13Speaker 2: those roles? Who's like the strong silent type? And who's
- 22:16Speaker 2: the one that you know is going to say the
- 22:17Speaker 2: right thing at the right time?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 5: I would say me and Lance are probably the most
- 22:26Speaker 5: like both-sided players. Both sided leaders, I would say, if
- 22:31Speaker 5: that makes sense. I feel like I can go to
- 22:35Speaker 5: the defense and say something and they will respect my opinion.
- 22:38Speaker 5: I think Lance is that defensive guy that can come
- 22:41Speaker 5: over and say something to offense and respect what he says.
- 22:44Speaker 2: How has Lance become that?
- 22:47Speaker 4: Because.
- 22:48Speaker 2: With respect to Lance, and I know there's a lot
- 22:50Speaker 2: of factors that play into this, his on-field resume does
- 22:54Speaker 2: not yet say he is undeniably that.
- 22:56Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Because sometimes it takes production. You've got to be a
- 23:00Speaker 2: guy coming off an all-conference season and things like that.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And I have no doubt his capabilities, and I'm crazy
- 23:06Speaker 2: impressed with him, but it's not like he's coming off
- 23:09Speaker 2: an All-American year last year. So how has he established
- 23:12Speaker 2: himself to that level, even with an offense, when his
- 23:15Speaker 2: on-field production maybe hasn't met that just yet?
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's his compelling.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Again, he talks to the offense just as much as
- 23:26Speaker 5: he talks to his side of the ball. To put
- 23:29Speaker 5: that type of effort into trying to make the whole team,
- 23:33Speaker 5: trying to be a compelling guy to anybody on the team,
- 23:35Speaker 5: that's something he does very well. He makes sure he's...
- 23:41Speaker 5: Lance is everywhere just because we all feel comfortable and
- 23:44Speaker 5: invite him just because he's made it where... Um, that's
- 23:47Speaker 5: something he put work into. He put work into making
- 23:51Speaker 5: guys feel welcome when he's around.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Do you, what do you think of the stuff that's
- 23:58Speaker 2: happening in college football right now? We're like dudes who
- 24:00Speaker 2: were on NFL rosters last week are coming back to
- 24:04Speaker 2: college football. Guys who were in the NBA last week
- 24:07Speaker 2: are coming back to college basketball.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And this was unthinkable.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Ten years ago, even five years ago when NIL and
- 24:15Speaker 2: all that stuff started to happen, we didn't think of
- 24:18Speaker 2: this being a possibility. And now, I mean, you're going
- 24:21Speaker 2: to have your own decision to make at some point
- 24:22Speaker 2: about a fifth year of eligibility and all that, but
- 24:26Speaker 2: this is, for me, really, really hard to swallow and crazy.
- 24:31Speaker 3: What's it like for someone who's actively in the game
- 24:33Speaker 3: right now?
- 24:34Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I mean, you know, if the opportunity makes sense,
- 24:38Speaker 5: you know, I hope people are able to get that opportunity,
- 24:41Speaker 5: but Yeah, it was a little crazy. Somebody broke down
- 24:44Speaker 5: something like someone actually played in a preseason game and
- 24:46Speaker 5: got paid for it and then came back.
- 24:50Speaker 4: To me, that's insane.
- 24:52Speaker 3: That's bananas.
- 24:53Speaker 5: To actually compete in a game, get paid for NFL,
- 24:56Speaker 5: be in the NFL, and then come back to college.
- 24:59Speaker 4: It does sound a little crazy to me.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I mean, there's guys who have signed NBA contracts. They're
- 25:05Speaker 3: just like, nah, just kidding. I played for BYU. What?
- 25:08Speaker 1: No.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I'm coming back.
- 25:09Speaker 3: No, you're not. That's not... It's like we all had
- 25:12Speaker 3: that dream, right?
- 25:13Speaker 2: You woke up one morning and you're just like, I
- 25:16Speaker 2: had a dream last night that I went back and
- 25:17Speaker 2: played another game for my high school.
- 25:19Speaker 3: And it's just like you laugh at yourself about it.
- 25:21Speaker 3: That's what they're doing now in college football.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, there's something about.
- 25:29Speaker 5: College may have a better life than NFL right now. Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Well, we got to find a way.
- 25:34Speaker 5: There's got to be some type of balance where, like,
- 25:37Speaker 5: we still want people to go to the NFL.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Do you watch Hard Knocks? Have you seen any of
- 25:40Speaker 3: the Hard Knocks?
- 25:41Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Okay, so this was hilarious because I think it was
- 25:45Speaker 2: from this year's Hard Knocks. They do the thing where
- 25:48Speaker 2: a rookie stands up, introduces himself, and says what his
- 25:51Speaker 2: signing bonus was, right? And if you're a first-rounder and
- 25:55Speaker 2: you got some crazy huge signing bonus, everyone's hooting and hollering.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Most people are just like, ah, you know, fifth-round pick,
- 26:01Speaker 2: seventh-round pick. $ 15, 000.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Signing bonus or whatever.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And one guy was just like, $ 15, 000 signing bonus. Made $ 700, 000
- 26:11Speaker 2: last year in NIL.
- 26:13Speaker 3: And all these old guys in the league, it's like, what? Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 3: What are you doing here then?
- 26:17Speaker 4: Yeah, right. Because you don't want to stay another year.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, because those guys are like, we made $ 0 when
- 26:23Speaker 2: we were in college. And, you know, that's crazy because
- 26:26Speaker 2: you're talking about a guy who was an unbelievable college player,
- 26:30Speaker 2: got compensated for it. maybe there's some doubts if he'll
- 26:33Speaker 2: be a good NFL player. So they're just like, yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 2: you can have a $ 10, 000 signing bonus or whatever. So
- 26:37Speaker 2: it's just like, that's gotta be a hard learning curve.
- 26:40Speaker 2: If you're in that category, if you're like, if you're
- 26:43Speaker 2: a bubble guy on an NFL roster, but you were
- 26:45Speaker 2: like Diego Pavi is the best example I can think of.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yep.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Heisman trophy finalist at Vanderbilt making millions at Vanderbilt.
- 26:53Speaker 3: The NFL doesn't want him. You're probably like, let me
- 26:56Speaker 3: go back to Vanderbilt.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Right. Like that, It's crazy to me.
- 27:01Speaker 5: It's crazy to me that you just hear people say,
- 27:04Speaker 5: I'd rather stay in college. That shouldn't be the case,
- 27:09Speaker 5: but it is the case.
- 27:12Speaker 2: We're going to wait, but you and I are going
- 27:14Speaker 2: to have this conversation at some point when we get
- 27:16Speaker 2: close to the end of the year because these are
- 27:17Speaker 2: things that are going to rear their head for everybody.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 27:25Speaker 2: A week away from playing the first game, what is
- 27:27Speaker 2: the nervousness, the feeling, the anticipation when you got seven
- 27:32Speaker 2: more days before football season is actually for real here.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I don't, the nervousness has not hit me
- 27:41Speaker 4: this year. I don't know.
- 27:42Speaker 5: I don't think, I don't think I'm nervous at all. Honestly,
- 27:44Speaker 5: I think like this is, this is my fourth year
- 27:48Speaker 5: of college.
- 27:49Speaker 2: They're like, if you were playing Arkansas in week one
- 27:51Speaker 2: instead of Idaho, would that be different?
- 27:54Speaker 1: No.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:55Speaker 5: I think like, Just my self-confidence, my self-belief, and how
- 28:00Speaker 5: far I've been able to see myself come up as
- 28:02Speaker 5: a football player. Man, my confidence is through the roof.
- 28:06Speaker 5: I'm just like, this is everything. I work to be
- 28:10Speaker 5: at this situation. I work to be here and feel
- 28:14Speaker 5: like I'm getting to my complete self. I'm very confident
- 28:19Speaker 5: just going into this situation.
- 28:22Speaker 2: That's QB1, Devin Dampier for Dishing with Dev. Culligan Water,
- 28:27Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and America First Credit Union
- 28:30Speaker 2: are your sponsors making this interview possible. every single week. Also,
- 28:34Speaker 2: Deb's here in studio. So all you folks that last
- 28:37Speaker 2: week were like, where's the YouTube? Cause you want to
- 28:39Speaker 2: see Deb's pretty face.
- 28:40Speaker 4: It's here.
- 28:42Speaker 2: ESPN, 700 sports.com. Uh, the YouTube link is there on
- 28:48Speaker 2: the page. So you can go watch it and it'll
- 28:51Speaker 2: be available on the app and all that stuff.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Deb, it's great to see you.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Good to see you too. It's always fun.
- 28:56Speaker 2: I will be doing this every single week. Uh, good
- 28:58Speaker 2: luck with game prep. And then obviously the next time
- 29:01Speaker 2: we have this conversation, uh, It's for real, for real.
- 29:03Speaker 4: It's for real, for real. Game week.
- 29:06Speaker 3: That's Devin Dampierre.
