- 0:28Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 0:59Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I am Brian and I am coming to you live
- 1:05Speaker 3: via digital recording.
- 1:06Speaker 1: From the Oddity Studios.
- 1:08Speaker 4: But there's someone else on the.
- 1:13Speaker 5: there's someone.
- 1:25Speaker 3: There's a call coming from inside the house. Joining me today.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I will let you give your name because sometimes it changes.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Right, right. Today was, this is a full Sam day today.
- 1:36Speaker 3: All right. All right. Sam is here then.
- 1:38Speaker 1: There we go.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Well, we, as, as I've previously mentioned on the show
- 1:45Speaker 3: and off, I don't normally like to do the zoom thing.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I prefer to be in the room and it just
- 1:52Speaker 3: makes it better, especially with our people. I've got to
- 1:54Speaker 3: the point now I don't even want to talk to
- 1:56Speaker 3: like outside people. That's sort of what got this rolling.
- 1:59Speaker 3: There's a person out there that was like, let's record
- 2:02Speaker 3: over Zoom. And then I upgraded my Zoom and they
- 2:04Speaker 3: were like.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Nothing useless never mind i won't.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Bad mouth them by name but yeah karma's a bitch
- 2:14Speaker 3: so right right anyway i was like well now i've
- 2:18Speaker 3: got this stupid zoom um i don't really want to
- 2:20Speaker 3: use it with any of the people that i normally
- 2:22Speaker 3: sit down with i'm like i don't want to talk
- 2:24Speaker 3: to anybody else who the hell do i want to
- 2:26Speaker 3: oh wait I need to talk to you. Hey, awesome.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Because we can never really be in the same place
- 2:33Speaker 3: at the same time. I was like, let's at least
- 2:34Speaker 3: take advantage of this and hang out and talk.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Here we are.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Until the monthly subscription runs out. So we
- 2:43Speaker 1: got a window here.
- 2:45Speaker 3: We're working on borrowed time.
- 2:47Speaker 1: We're working on borrowed time.
- 2:48Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:48Speaker 1: That's right. Uh, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I think, thanks
- 2:51Speaker 1: for thinking about me and, uh, you know, inviting me on. It's, uh,
- 2:54Speaker 1: real cool. Always good to, to chat and talk, uh,
- 2:57Speaker 1: geek out with you and, uh, go down the litany of, uh,
- 3:01Speaker 1: cinematic crimes and triumphs that have come up over the
- 3:04Speaker 1: last you know i mean i guess you were down
- 3:06Speaker 1: in atlanta probably in 2019 you know some things have
- 3:09Speaker 1: happened in the world since then you.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Know just before the world shut down yeah yeah because
- 3:15Speaker 3: i will i'll scroll back sometimes just to look at
- 3:17Speaker 3: like the stuff we've done and it is funny it's
- 3:19Speaker 3: like right before that It's like we're hanging out in
- 3:23Speaker 3: the park talking in person live. And then you go
- 3:26Speaker 3: ahead a few months and you start seeing these special episodes.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And then I'm stuck on Zoom because I have to be.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And then I keep going, we finally come in contact
- 3:36Speaker 3: with each other again. So you see this transition of
- 3:40Speaker 3: what was going on in the world based on what
- 3:42Speaker 3: the hell was going on in those episodes. But it
- 3:44Speaker 3: is funny. That was right before it all went to hell.
- 3:48Speaker 1: That's right.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Those old days were....
- 3:51Speaker 1: You know, because, you know, I kind of had a
- 3:52Speaker 1: freak out at the Dragon Con. So, you know, I
- 3:55Speaker 1: had no idea that the entire world would hear my
- 3:58Speaker 1: plea and just make everybody stay home.
- 4:01Speaker 3: For two years. So maybe you caused the freak out
- 4:04Speaker 3: for humanity. You were patient zero.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I just sent out such a screaming psychic cry for help.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Just shut it all down.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Social drama, patient zero.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Right, right. Absolutely.
- 4:22Speaker 3: There's no virus. It's all just in your brain. And
- 4:26Speaker 3: then you broadcast it out to the rest of humanity
- 4:29Speaker 3: of like, look, you need to stay away from each
- 4:31Speaker 3: other for a good long while. Not only....
- 4:35Speaker 1: Right, exactly. Not only do I need to stay home
- 4:37Speaker 1: for a little while, everybody needs to.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Stay home for a little while. It's not just about me.
- 4:43Speaker 3: That's right. You're all causing the problem. Stay at home.
- 4:50Speaker 1: That's right. Either you all have to stay home or
- 4:53Speaker 1: I have to stay home. So, you know, whatever, you know.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I mean, we were discussing that, what little we had
- 5:01Speaker 3: before we got rolling. We're like, this is an experiment.
- 5:03Speaker 3: We'll see what it's like because... I mean, I had
- 5:06Speaker 3: that too. And I think I've gotten, I, as I said,
- 5:10Speaker 3: like I've gotten to where I'm way more happy with
- 5:14Speaker 3: the people that I have. So like when it came back,
- 5:18Speaker 3: when it was a year and a half later and
- 5:19Speaker 3: it's like, okay, we can go out and talk to
- 5:21Speaker 3: people out in the world now. And I was like, uh,
- 5:25Speaker 3: I was like, do we want to, and I've had
- 5:30Speaker 3: several great people along the way, but it's, it's a
- 5:33Speaker 3: fight now because I'm so, happy with the people that
- 5:37Speaker 3: i normally talk to and if we could get you
- 5:39Speaker 3: a little closer it would make this a lot easier
- 5:41Speaker 3: but other than that like i i don't do i
- 5:44Speaker 3: need to uh no new friends right i mean.
- 5:48Speaker 6: We don't need to see other people i think we
- 5:51Speaker 6: need to see other people that's that's factored into our
- 5:55Speaker 6: lives now so we have we have to see how
- 5:58Speaker 6: that goes too we were just saying that with the
- 6:01Speaker 6: uh going back out to a convention again.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I mean, we've done several in the last year, but not,
- 6:07Speaker 3: I mean, a fraction compared to what we used to do.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And that's not by accident either. Like I just look
- 6:12Speaker 3: at them sometimes and I'm like, I'm fine. I know
- 6:16Speaker 3: how it goes. Like I've been to so many, I
- 6:18Speaker 3: can't count them anymore. Like, so yeah, it's, it's a
- 6:23Speaker 3: lot harder to get out in the world and interact
- 6:25Speaker 3: with people. So it really is baby steps, you know?
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Baby steps, baby steps. You know, basically my job
- 6:31Speaker 1: is on, these teams calls, like we use the team's
- 6:35Speaker 1: platform all day. So I'm there all the time. And,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and for a person who sometimes has trouble reading the room,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, it's a real room, let.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Alone virtual postage stamp size versions of people on your screen.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, these little round circles with a picture from five
- 6:57Speaker 1: years ago of them on it. You're going like, okay,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I can't read. I can't read. I can't tell. I
- 7:03Speaker 1: think Steve's pissed at me right now, but.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I can't tell.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I know, right?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Damn, he doesn't even talk to me anymore. I don't
- 7:10Speaker 3: know what's going on with us.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 7:14Speaker 1: So, you know, it's funny. But yeah, you're talking about
- 7:17Speaker 1: going back to convention. Oh, and, you know, just about
- 7:20Speaker 1: your your, your litany of, uh, co-hosts and everything. I
- 7:23Speaker 1: think everybody's like, uh, you know, it seems to have
- 7:26Speaker 1: gotten into here. Here's here's John Conkle's review of movie
- 7:29Speaker 1: meltdown and everything. I've, I liked all the new folks
- 7:32Speaker 1: and everything. And I like how it's, uh, you've gotten
- 7:34Speaker 1: a good rapport with everybody and, you know, just being
- 7:36Speaker 1: a long time listener. Uh, I I've enjoyed, uh, the
- 7:40Speaker 1: new faces and the middle. I like, I like, I
- 7:43Speaker 1: know the people from like that, you know, maybe like
- 7:46Speaker 1: from a year or two years ago, you started looping
- 7:49Speaker 1: in and then, you know, four years ago. And then
- 7:51Speaker 1: sometimes we go back, you know, people from way back,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you know, and every.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Once in a while. Yeah. I'll be like, you want
- 7:58Speaker 3: to talk on here?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Some people just disappear.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Like, sure. Some people, I mean, it is a term now.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Some people pull a Roger. I don't know that he's
- 8:09Speaker 3: out there listening. I believe it's still, occasionally interact with
- 8:13Speaker 3: his wife on the facebooks but he was never into
- 8:15Speaker 3: facebook so like i never really hear anything so yeah
- 8:19Speaker 3: roger was on the show week in and week out
- 8:21Speaker 3: and then one day he just wasn't and we didn't
- 8:23Speaker 3: know what the hell happened to him so a lot
- 8:26Speaker 3: of people just disappear and like i'm like well i
- 8:29Speaker 3: mean i'm not forcing anybody to be on it's an
- 8:32Speaker 3: offer if you want to come come on the show
- 8:34Speaker 3: like wow.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I mean, your show has been on so long, Brian, that,
- 8:38Speaker 1: you know, people just go through different stages, you know.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Oh, I realize that. And I've gotten to that point
- 8:44Speaker 3: where I'm like, well, I think they're done with it now.
- 8:47Speaker 3: They've gotten it out of their system. Like, I wonder
- 8:50Speaker 3: what podcasting is like. And then they're like three years
- 8:53Speaker 3: in going, oh, my God, if I do this another
- 8:55Speaker 3: day and then they're done. So I get it. That's
- 9:00Speaker 3: what I keep saying with people that don't want to
- 9:01Speaker 3: listen to him either. I'm like, no, I understand. Like I,
- 9:05Speaker 3: I am that person on a lot of other, like
- 9:07Speaker 3: I try to go to other shows sometimes and I'm like,
- 9:09Speaker 3: I can't, I just know you got to find the
- 9:12Speaker 3: right people. And I know we're, we're not the right
- 9:14Speaker 3: people for a lot of the world. I get that.
- 9:16Speaker 3: So I'm just thankful when we do find someone and you're,
- 9:19Speaker 3: you're a good example. So I'm glad somehow if nothing else,
- 9:23Speaker 3: if the show's done nothing else, I'm talking to you
- 9:26Speaker 3: right now.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Hey, there we go.
- 9:28Speaker 3: We've accomplished nothing else. I would have never run into you.
- 9:32Speaker 3: We've never sat in the park and creeped out with
- 9:34Speaker 3: a random normal people. We wouldn't be having this zoom
- 9:38Speaker 3: call right now. So if nothing else, this is where
- 9:41Speaker 3: we've got.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's, it's the, the initial promise of the internet of
- 9:46Speaker 1: breaking people from a desperate, desperate backgrounds under the same
- 9:52Speaker 1: umbrella there for, for a moment. So, you know, it's a,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you know, kumbaya, you know, which is at.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Times the most frightening part about it. Cause now any,
- 10:00Speaker 3: anywhere in the world can be an asshole to a
- 10:02Speaker 3: random stranger, but on the other side of that, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 3: the counterbalance, sometimes it brings people together.
- 10:09Speaker 1: So that's right.
- 10:10Speaker 3: We'll take it.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 10:14Speaker 1: You were talking about going back to conventions. That does
- 10:18Speaker 1: remind me. That I did attempt a convention a few
- 10:23Speaker 1: weeks ago.
- 10:24Speaker 3: You left the house?
- 10:26Speaker 1: I left the house. It was crazy.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Uh i my my you know if something happens is
- 10:32Speaker 1: going to happen six months away i say like yeah
- 10:34Speaker 1: let's do that you know and then i forget about
- 10:36Speaker 1: it and then the day comes i'm going like ah
- 10:38Speaker 1: crap we gotta.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah i think i saw that first hand.
- 10:41Speaker 4: One time yeah yeah that sounds great let's go there
- 10:45Speaker 4: right there in the middle of all the.
- 10:46Speaker 1: People good idea yeah like no no no no no
- 10:49Speaker 1: yeah nope nope beep beep bop beep bop breakdown yeah
- 10:53Speaker 1: um yeah yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 3: How did this time go well.
- 10:56Speaker 1: You know what i think for me personally the uh
- 11:01Speaker 1: the the two years isolation actually helped me i appreciate
- 11:08Speaker 1: kind of crowds now you know so i'm i kind
- 11:10Speaker 1: of like got had like a nice long hibernation and
- 11:15Speaker 1: um so now if i get into that i don't
- 11:17Speaker 1: you know expectations.
- 11:21Speaker 3: If you expect a certain thing, it's best.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Not to have expectations. Words of wisdom.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Set your bar real low. If you trip over it,
- 11:36Speaker 3: that's about right. Exactly.
- 11:38Speaker 1: You got no control over other people. You just got
- 11:41Speaker 1: to say, whatever happens, happens. I'm just going to enjoy
- 11:44Speaker 1: the show. I'm going to enjoy the run. We went
- 11:47Speaker 1: to And this is like not my thing, but we
- 11:51Speaker 1: went to like it's called Atlanta Anime Weekend. And it's
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's focused solely on anime. All right.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Which I mean, as anyone who does listen to the
- 12:03Speaker 3: show knows, we're constantly just sort of perplexed by it. Like,
- 12:08Speaker 3: I don't dislike it. I just I'm not really into it.
- 12:12Speaker 3: But I know the people that are are really into it.
- 12:15Speaker 3: So like I have to just step back and be like,
- 12:16Speaker 3: all right, this is your thing. You go to town. Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 1: It's a new, it's like a whole other culture. It's
- 12:24Speaker 1: a whole, I mean, I didn't really know about it
- 12:26Speaker 1: until my kids started getting into it. And then I
- 12:29Speaker 1: was going like, well, what are you watching? Because you know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: in my day you know and like uh you know
- 12:34Speaker 1: in the 90s there really wasn't that much and usually
- 12:37Speaker 1: the people that watched anime were real weird.
- 12:40Speaker 7: And that's me saying it that's me saying it yeah
- 12:43Speaker 7: i mean it was like okay a couple times a
- 12:46Speaker 7: week i say and that's coming from me so that's
- 12:48Speaker 7: bad so yeah when i set a bar once again
- 12:51Speaker 7: right if i'm calling people out for being strange and
- 12:55Speaker 7: unusual i i You're creeping me out.
- 12:58Speaker 1: That's right. Exactly, bud.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I get it because I was, as you know, I
- 13:05Speaker 3: was hanging out at a video store back in those
- 13:07Speaker 3: days and we had one little section and it was
- 13:10Speaker 3: just like one rack and it was like VHS tapes
- 13:14Speaker 3: of only the biggest titles that you've heard of because, again,
- 13:17Speaker 3: they didn't bother importing stuff for dumb Americans that was
- 13:20Speaker 3: less than Akira. It was the biggest things in the
- 13:24Speaker 3: world and they were on VHS and only there was
- 13:28Speaker 3: like specific like you could look at them when they
- 13:29Speaker 3: come in not to not to put people in the
- 13:31Speaker 3: box but like you can look at him oh he's
- 13:33Speaker 3: heading to the end yeah and first of all it's
- 13:36Speaker 3: he because i don't know if i ever saw a
- 13:38Speaker 3: girl over there no no now it is equally as
- 13:41Speaker 3: much if not more so girls than guys but yeah
- 13:45Speaker 3: back in the day i don't know if i ever
- 13:47Speaker 3: saw a girl.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Over there but no no no you could.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Pin down the type of person coming in and be
- 13:51Speaker 3: like yeah i know.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Where we're heading yeah they're heading straight to the tentacle
- 13:55Speaker 1: section i know oh yeah i know what.
- 13:58Speaker 3: They're up to somebody's gonna be reading and then it
- 14:00Speaker 3: got it did it was again baby steps because then
- 14:03Speaker 3: the world of dragon ball z came along yeah and
- 14:06Speaker 3: there was this spillover and then you had kind of
- 14:09Speaker 3: regular people that suddenly found this one part of it
- 14:12Speaker 3: and they probably didn't even get into a lot of
- 14:14Speaker 3: other stuff but they were in there buying every dragon
- 14:17Speaker 3: ball z thing that came out i was just like
- 14:19Speaker 3: well All right. So again, it's like little steps till
- 14:23Speaker 3: we get to your crunchy roll today. And it's like
- 14:25Speaker 3: a whole nother world. So it is, it is.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And it's, it's actually, I would say the ones that
- 14:32Speaker 1: my kids have introduced me to are actually pretty, pretty cool.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Cause they are kind of like soap operas, like old,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you know, kind of like the Spider-Man, you know, where
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's all about their screwed up life. And a lot
- 14:47Speaker 1: of them aren't even, I'm like, We're old people explaining
- 14:52Speaker 1: anime to each other. Okay, so.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Welcome to the episode.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Where 40-somethings catch themselves up on.
- 15:00Speaker 3: 70-somethings. Now there's these cartoons.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Now there's these cartoons.
- 15:06Speaker 3: This ain't Mickey Mouse now. This ain't Steamboat Willie. Sometimes
- 15:10Speaker 3: there's tentacles. Sometimes people are doing some crazy stuff.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. And sometimes there's no.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Aspect to it at all it's all just like people
- 15:23Speaker 1: talking it's like a high school drama you know and
- 15:27Speaker 1: you're going like well that's real interesting you know but
- 15:32Speaker 1: my two girls they like these certain titles and I've
- 15:37Speaker 1: watched a few of them with them and I'm going
- 15:39Speaker 1: like A the animation on some of these are like
- 15:44Speaker 1: really really clever it's not like Trans-Or-Z or Voltron anymore
- 15:48Speaker 1: it's like All this money is just being dumped, you know?
- 15:52Speaker 1: And I guess, you know, I got in, I mean,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I guess this isn't really, I didn't think of it
- 15:56Speaker 1: as anime, but you know, battle for the planets, AKA
- 15:59Speaker 1: gotcha man. Oh yeah. Back in the day.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I watched that all the time.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I love that stuff, you know?
- 16:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 1: But, and speed racer, but, The kill speed racer kill,
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know, anything to win. I must win. What I
- 16:15Speaker 1: like about anime is they're under so much pressure to
- 16:18Speaker 1: perform at all times. You know, it's like it just
- 16:21Speaker 1: kind of gives you a view into their culture. Like
- 16:23Speaker 1: all the high school kids are stressed out. You know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: they're going like, oh, if I don't do this, then
- 16:28Speaker 1: I won't get into this and I won't do that.
- 16:30Speaker 1: And I'll be a biggest loser, you know. And, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 1: just the difference in culture is kind of because, you know,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think it's a little bit like that over here.
- 16:39Speaker 1: But I think those kids are like, I think they're.
- 16:43Speaker 1: pressure to perform and be the best is like insane
- 16:47Speaker 1: you know i feel.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Like an american version would be very different especially if
- 16:51Speaker 3: you like we pick the slackers or we're following a
- 16:55Speaker 3: group of stoners around right right man i just don't
- 16:59Speaker 3: feel like getting my phone to order a pizza totally
- 17:03Speaker 3: different set of priorities in this country.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Yeah yeah I mean, you know, I mean, so, yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I mean, again, you know, in my circle of people
- 17:12Speaker 1: in high school, we were not under pressure. We were
- 17:17Speaker 1: not we were not feeling much pressure to take over
- 17:20Speaker 1: the world.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Well, you're going to dishonor your family. I hope you know.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Exactly. But yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So we went to this thing and. All right. So
- 17:32Speaker 1: I was actually OK. So I showed up. And we
- 17:36Speaker 1: got there and there was like, you know, it's probably
- 17:40Speaker 1: a third of the size of Dragon Con. So it's not,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know, instead of like 80.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Dragon Con is huge.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So it was probably, it was probably a fourth. It
- 17:49Speaker 1: was like, it was like 20,000 people. Okay. And in
- 17:52Speaker 1: a smaller space. So that was different. But the costumes
- 17:58Speaker 1: were huge. you know just amazing you know.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I was gonna say i assume as you go there
- 18:02Speaker 3: you're dressed like captain harlock i mean right who but
- 18:07Speaker 3: keep whipping in the wind scar right oh yeah oh
- 18:12Speaker 3: yeah yeah yeah got it oh.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah yeah um yeah but uh yeah no
- 18:18Speaker 1: i don't know i'm way too lazy to put that
- 18:20Speaker 1: kind of effort into something that's what i.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Think everyone like that looks like a lot of work
- 18:24Speaker 3: i don't know I got to walk around like that
- 18:26Speaker 3: all day.
- 18:27Speaker 2: No.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 1: No, I'm not, not into that. Not into that. That's
- 18:33Speaker 1: way too much effort. I don't want people. I don't
- 18:35Speaker 1: want strangers coming up to me to take my picture.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Can I take a picture? Can I take a picture
- 18:39Speaker 1: with you?
- 18:39Speaker 3: You're like, no, don't touch me.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Don't touch.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Me.
- 18:44Speaker 1: So, but my two kids, my two girls are like
- 18:48Speaker 1: way into this stuff. And so we showed up.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So my mistake. you know, we, uh, said, well, we're
- 18:56Speaker 1: just going to go on a day. So we'll just
- 18:57Speaker 1: get a one day pass and you got to get
- 18:59Speaker 1: the one day pass at the door. You can't buy
- 19:01Speaker 1: it on the internet, but I was going like, it'll
- 19:02Speaker 1: be fine. We'll, we'll get there early. You know, it'll,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you know, we'll, we'll make, get there before the line
- 19:08Speaker 1: gets crazy. You know, you'd like to think that.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Sure. Yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah, sure.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Sure.
- 19:12Speaker 1: But so we got there early, probably like 11 a.m.
- 19:17Speaker 1: That's early for Saturday. We get there. Holy cow.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So first you had like the COVID testing line. All right.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Would that COVID line was like, uh, you know, five
- 19:33Speaker 1: blocks long, you know, luckily we had our tests and
- 19:35Speaker 1: everything ready to go. So we go like, ha ha suckers,
- 19:39Speaker 1: you know, we'll, we'll, we'll see you inside.
- 19:41Speaker 3: This was pretty recent, right? Yeah. This was like, cause
- 19:45Speaker 3: that's the difference. Like you guys are still a pretty
- 19:47Speaker 3: huge city. So it's like, I think the larger, cities
- 19:50Speaker 3: are still going by kind of the old rules where
- 19:53Speaker 3: the further you get away from those, like the handful
- 19:55Speaker 3: of places I've been this past year, nothing yeah no
- 20:00Speaker 3: testing no proof of testing no masks right i think
- 20:04Speaker 3: everybody's just so desperate to like get back to things
- 20:07Speaker 3: and make money at these before we all go bankrupt
- 20:11Speaker 3: i don't care just come in fuck i'm ass let's
- 20:13Speaker 3: go like so yeah exactly just to put it in
- 20:16Speaker 3: perspective it is interesting that you guys are still like
- 20:19Speaker 3: proving that you're taking tests and.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Things of that nature Yeah, yeah, kind of. Yeah, kind of.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I mean, I saw, you know, masks were required at
- 20:27Speaker 1: the thing. I saw half half people wearing masks and
- 20:31Speaker 1: they all wear them wrong. And they were all around.
- 20:33Speaker 1: You're not wearing the double mask. You know, you know,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know, anyway, that's all gone.
- 20:37Speaker 3: I just want my cosplay to be like a guy
- 20:39Speaker 3: in a hazmat suit.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Right.
- 20:41Speaker 3: And then I'm all set. Like, just wear that to
- 20:43Speaker 3: every show.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Ready to go ready to go yeah there are like
- 20:46Speaker 1: some anime characters with like you know some kind of
- 20:48Speaker 1: like you know surgical mask on them so that works out.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I mean japan has way more of that going on
- 20:54Speaker 3: well before covid so.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Right right right it's a it's a good look you
- 20:57Speaker 1: know but you go like uh but i would hate
- 21:00Speaker 1: to spend like 500 on a costume then you have
- 21:02Speaker 1: to crap throw some crappy mask on it You know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: it's not screen accurate.
- 21:07Speaker 3: You can't see that I'm Captain Harlock. Behind this mask,
- 21:12Speaker 3: between the mask and the eye patch, I can't really
- 21:14Speaker 3: get around very well.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So one or two things happened here with this.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Either.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Okay, so we get to the actual line to get
- 21:25Speaker 1: into the thing. All right. I'm an idiot. Okay, so
- 21:28Speaker 1: the line.
- 21:31Speaker 1: The, you got the hamster trail, you know, the, the,
- 21:34Speaker 1: the rat maze part.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Okay.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So that that's packed in, you know, uh, elbow to elbow.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And then you got it. COVID friendly.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Hey, you had your test. That's fine. Um, uh, then
- 21:47Speaker 1: like pack out of that is like, you know, just
- 21:51Speaker 1: a line. It's like in this hotel. And, uh, the
- 21:55Speaker 1: line is like, out the, the hamster trail, the, the,
- 21:58Speaker 1: the rat maze and out that around the thing around this,
- 22:02Speaker 1: around that, down the escalator, this way, that way, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:06Speaker 1: You know, I'm going like, okay, well, I'm an idiot. Uh,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I forgot that other people enjoy things, you know? And, um,
- 22:14Speaker 1: so I told the kids, I told them, okay. Oh,
- 22:17Speaker 1: then they're like making announcements. I go up to this
- 22:19Speaker 1: random stranger, which is not something I do. I go like,
- 22:22Speaker 1: I go like, hey, bro, what is this line and
- 22:24Speaker 1: what's going on? And they're going like, oh, man, this
- 22:27Speaker 1: is the line to get in, but they've closed it,
- 22:29Speaker 1: you know, so they're not letting anybody else in, you know.
- 22:33Speaker 1: And I'm going like, wow, really? And he's like, yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 1: It's like, what are you standing here for?
- 22:40Speaker 3: So we're both clueless and did this wrong.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And so there's like the volunteers, they're trying to tell
- 22:46Speaker 1: people nobody else is in until people have filtered out
- 22:49Speaker 1: and then we'll start letting people live. You know, there's
- 22:51Speaker 1: like 500 people ahead of us, you know, in line.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And I'm going like, OK, so kids, we could, you know,
- 22:58Speaker 1: it's like showing up at Wally World, you know, and kids,
- 23:01Speaker 1: you know, we.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Did you punch a moose in the nose? Is that
- 23:04Speaker 3: what you're leading to?
- 23:07Speaker 1: I needed a moose to punch. Um, but, uh, I
- 23:10Speaker 1: was kind of like, okay, cause you know, so we
- 23:12Speaker 1: can stand in this line and maybe the, the elder
- 23:15Speaker 1: gods will let us back into Valhalla here, but, uh,
- 23:19Speaker 1: probably not, you know, we probably were, but here's the thing.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Here's my thoughts.
- 23:24Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Okay. The, the, the point of a convention is, uh,
- 23:31Speaker 1: if there's a panel that you want to see, if
- 23:35Speaker 1: there is a guest that, you want to see, or
- 23:38Speaker 1: it's other than that, it's, or, you know, okay. If
- 23:41Speaker 1: there's four things, uh, if you want to buy like a, a,
- 23:44Speaker 1: a Highlander sword, screen, accurate Highlander sword.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Of course, which everyone listening has, you know, right.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And, uh, and demon red eye contacts, which I'm sure
- 23:54Speaker 1: there are, totally safe.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Like that kid at the mall wore all the time
- 23:59Speaker 3: right right he was like he was early days he
- 24:02Speaker 3: did that before it was cool that's.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Right man that's right yeah he had a he had
- 24:05Speaker 1: an order from the mail order he probably did yeah
- 24:08Speaker 1: yeah that's fine it's fine i'm gonna stick these in
- 24:10Speaker 1: my eye it's fine.
- 24:12Speaker 3: His eyes are infected now he can't even.
- 24:14Speaker 1: See anymore that's right he.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Was the guinea pig for the rest of the.
- 24:18Speaker 1: People patient zero again Um, so there's, there's the market room,
- 24:23Speaker 1: there's the meet a guest, there's a tin of panel. Uh,
- 24:26Speaker 1: but other than that, for me, it's all about the
- 24:28Speaker 1: people watching and, uh, just, you know, going, Oh, that's cool.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Just kind of hanging out and people watching, you know,
- 24:35Speaker 1: that's congregating of geeks.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:37Speaker 1: That's what I get out of conventions. So, I mean,
- 24:40Speaker 1: once I realized that those people running the panels didn't
- 24:42Speaker 1: know shit any more than I did.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I see that a lot over the years. It's hit
- 24:48Speaker 3: and miss depending on which one you're at. But yeah,
- 24:50Speaker 3: sometimes there's some in particular that have been going on
- 24:53Speaker 3: for years and like, I will get there and still
- 24:57Speaker 3: they do not know what they're doing. I'm like, guys,
- 24:58Speaker 3: this is not your first show. Like I've been to
- 25:01Speaker 3: 14 other ones. Like you should know how to run
- 25:03Speaker 3: the basic stuff now.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Nope.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Still screwing it up. I'm just like, This is why
- 25:07Speaker 3: I don't want to start a convention. This is a
- 25:09Speaker 3: lot of coordinating things that I'm over at this point.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no, no, no. Let the next wave of
- 25:16Speaker 1: geeks worry about that crap. You know, I am not. No, no.
- 25:20Speaker 1: But I was like, OK, so most of the things,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you know, you're going to see are going to be
- 25:26Speaker 1: if it was a panel, it's probably going to be
- 25:28Speaker 1: on YouTube and 48 hours.
- 25:30Speaker 3: That's the other weird thing that's happened since they all started.
- 25:34Speaker 3: It used to be you had to be there to
- 25:36Speaker 3: experience it. Now you're like, eh, I'll catch you tomorrow
- 25:39Speaker 3: on YouTube. Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Now, one of the coolest ones I saw at a
- 25:43Speaker 1: Day of the Dead in Atlanta, which is a very
- 25:46Speaker 1: small convention, but it's cool. It's not a lot of people.
- 25:49Speaker 1: But I saw the thing panel with all the people
- 25:53Speaker 1: from the 82.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Everybody that's not Kurt Russell was there.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right. Everybody not Kurt Russell, not John Carpenter,
- 26:00Speaker 1: all the people that, you know, and not Keith David.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Yeah, well, it's hard to pull him in. He's still working.
- 26:07Speaker 1: He's still working.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I saw him today. Oh, no, this weekend. Yeah. Not
- 26:11Speaker 3: in person, but on TV. Oh, yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I saw him. I saw him in a movie. We'll
- 26:15Speaker 1: talk about.
- 26:15Speaker 3: We'll talk about. Yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yeah. All right. Cool. Did you say Keith David?
- 26:21Speaker 3: No, David Keith. Wait, wait, wait. I'll be playing that all.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. So. So at one
- 26:28Speaker 1: point when everybody was leaving that thing convention, we were
- 26:31Speaker 1: in this tight, narrow hallway and we were walking and
- 26:34Speaker 1: I just happened to end up in the midst of them.
- 26:37Speaker 3: You know?
- 26:38Speaker 1: And so I was going like, oh my God, I'm
- 26:39Speaker 1: in the thing right now.
- 26:40Speaker 3: This is awesome. You're like, hey, Windows, what's up? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 1: It was like, it was a tight hallway. I was
- 26:47Speaker 1: with the cast of the thing. I was going like, man,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm having my own little movie here, you know, right now.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But AnimeCon, they, all right, it was packed to the gills.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But I was like, there were so many people refused entrants.
- 27:00Speaker 1: That it was kind of like another convention in the
- 27:03Speaker 1: lobby and in the courtyard outside the hotel. Because I
- 27:08Speaker 1: was going like, kids, look, the big part of this
- 27:12Speaker 1: is just, you know, people watching and going up and
- 27:15Speaker 1: getting your picture taken and just kind of hanging out
- 27:17Speaker 1: and enjoying the, you know, general geek vibe. All right.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Basically recreated our interaction.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Because when I got there the second day, I couldn't
- 27:27Speaker 3: get any more. Yeah. So I was just hanging out
- 27:29Speaker 3: in the lobby with you and we were overwhelmed by
- 27:32Speaker 3: people and watching dorks and outfits go by.
- 27:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 27:35Speaker 3: So this is pretty much what we did when we
- 27:37Speaker 3: were at a huge convention.
- 27:39Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. And so I said, like, here,
- 27:43Speaker 1: your dad's old. I'm going to sit against this wall
- 27:45Speaker 1: and y'all run around and come back and get me
- 27:47Speaker 1: when y'all are bored.
- 27:49Speaker 3: This is you going out into the world. I'm going
- 27:51Speaker 3: to sit against this wall. I think that says a
- 27:55Speaker 3: lot about your place in life.
- 27:58Speaker 1: That's what I do. I'm going to just blend in
- 28:01Speaker 1: and just watch stuff go by. And so they go off.
- 28:08Speaker 1: About 15 minutes later, they come back and they sit
- 28:11Speaker 1: and they look sad. And I go like, what's up?
- 28:13Speaker 1: And they go like, I don't think people watching... and
- 28:17Speaker 1: getting pictures taken with people in costumes is for us,
- 28:20Speaker 1: you know, they, they had had a little conversation before
- 28:23Speaker 1: coming back, you know? And I said like, all right,
- 28:26Speaker 1: it's out of his mind. Yeah. Right.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, that's fine.
- 28:30Speaker 3: That's good.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I mean, whatever. I mean, I don't care, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 1: this is the decision we all have to make. Yeah,
- 28:36Speaker 1: that's right. That's right. I'm not going to force you
- 28:38Speaker 1: to take pictures. I mean, I even showed them cause
- 28:40Speaker 1: they're kind of shy, you know? And so I go,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I say like, here, here's how you do it. You know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I walked up to some guy with a chainsaw head
- 28:47Speaker 1: and I said like, Hey, chainsaw man, I like your costume.
- 28:51Speaker 1: And they're like, Oh geez, dad. And like, and then like, Hey,
- 28:55Speaker 1: can I get a picture with you? And he goes like, yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 1: sure dude. He strikes a pose. I strike a pose. My,
- 28:59Speaker 1: my eldest takes a picture. I go like, Hey, that's
- 29:01Speaker 1: what you do. You just go around and repeat that,
- 29:04Speaker 1: you know, until you get bored.
- 29:05Speaker 3: And um you have that photo right because yeah i
- 29:08Speaker 3: do i do that can be our photo to accompany.
- 29:11Speaker 9: This yeah okay yeah yeah i'll shoot it over to
- 29:16Speaker 9: you um and uh and so i go like all
- 29:20Speaker 9: right go go now that you know the way that's
- 29:22Speaker 9: now you go do it and uh they were like
- 29:24Speaker 9: uh yeah but you know what i really think a you.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Know If they have social anxiety, they get it honest,
- 29:31Speaker 1: you know, from their old man. All right. You know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: I can't I can't make them be something, you know,
- 29:36Speaker 1: there are you.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Know there are things going on in dna that you
- 29:39Speaker 3: can't even begin to.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Find it's hardwired into them you know but at the
- 29:44Speaker 1: same time i mean i think that year and a
- 29:46Speaker 1: half of lockdown and them being told that it's dangerous
- 29:50Speaker 1: to be in crowds i think that has messed my
- 29:53Speaker 1: kids up a.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Time out for a second. I keep coming up with this,
- 30:01Speaker 3: but I, I'm going back even further because I have
- 30:04Speaker 3: a niece who was born in this era.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:08Speaker 3: So like, she is so freaked out. Like she, I mean,
- 30:12Speaker 3: think about it for the first year and a half,
- 30:15Speaker 3: she came in contact with no one other than her
- 30:17Speaker 3: parents and, And didn't leave the house. Like this is
- 30:21Speaker 3: like a weird sci-fi story, you know, like off in
- 30:23Speaker 3: the future where kids are raised in a cubicle. Like
- 30:26Speaker 3: this is what it was like. So like when I'm
- 30:28Speaker 3: watching her now and she's like freaking out when she
- 30:31Speaker 3: has to deal with like she even coming around me,
- 30:34Speaker 3: which granted most people are creeped out by me. But
- 30:35Speaker 3: like normally the kids that I'm related to for some
- 30:38Speaker 3: reason are attached to me pretty early on. but because
- 30:41Speaker 3: she was barely around me when she was in that,
- 30:43Speaker 3: that lockdown mode, she was just like, Oh, who the
- 30:46Speaker 3: hell is this? You're not my mom. Like, so that
- 30:48Speaker 3: was weird. And then since then, like, there's so many
- 30:51Speaker 3: things that just upset her that like, she's just kind
- 30:53Speaker 3: of not ready for that. I'm like, I think if
- 30:57Speaker 3: you had a regular, you know, year and a half
- 30:59Speaker 3: growing up before the rest of this, like you might've
- 31:02Speaker 3: had a shot, but like, I think this is going
- 31:05Speaker 3: to cause like waves of things that like not necessarily problems.
- 31:09Speaker 3: It's just going to be looking at future generations and
- 31:13Speaker 3: every kid that comes from this and their kids, like
- 31:15Speaker 3: there's going to be a factor that comes into play
- 31:17Speaker 3: that we've never had before.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Right, right. I agree. I agree. I think. I think
- 31:22Speaker 1: if you missed out on kindergarten and first grade, I mean, yeah,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you are.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Think about that. Or like my older nephew, like I
- 31:30Speaker 3: spent a horrible time in freaking high school, but my
- 31:33Speaker 3: other nephew like missed half of his high school. Yeah.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Sitting at home on a computer. And I was just like,
- 31:39Speaker 3: that's weird. Like, don't get me wrong. I kind of
- 31:41Speaker 3: wish I would have had that option.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah, sure.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I mean, I think it also causes social ramifications that
- 31:50Speaker 3: we don't realize. So it's yeah, it's interesting to hear
- 31:53Speaker 3: your version, too, because I keep watching that in the
- 31:56Speaker 3: kids that I'm related to.
- 31:57Speaker 1: And yeah, it's weird. I'm going like, I don't want
- 32:01Speaker 1: everybody to be like me. I mean, we need some
- 32:04Speaker 1: socially functioning people in the world or the place is
- 32:07Speaker 1: going to fall apart.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Society will fall apart if somebody can't interact with somebody.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, people. I'm kind of like in the
- 32:15Speaker 1: special case. I'm in the special classroom here. I don't know.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Again, watching it happen that year and a half, two years,
- 32:25Speaker 3: I was like, I feel like we could get to
- 32:27Speaker 3: that point. Like it is like, I kept looking at
- 32:29Speaker 3: it as almost science fiction. I'm like, all we have
- 32:31Speaker 3: to do is sit at our houses. We interact through
- 32:34Speaker 3: the internet most of the time anyway now. And then
- 32:36Speaker 3: it also hit at the time in our society when
- 32:39Speaker 3: you can just have things come to your house all
- 32:42Speaker 3: day long. So as long as we can still employ
- 32:44Speaker 3: drivers on a truck, like everybody else in the world
- 32:48Speaker 3: can just sit in their houses and like, they'll, come up,
- 32:51Speaker 3: drop it on the porch, never come in contact with
- 32:53Speaker 3: that person, take it in their house, do their thing,
- 32:55Speaker 3: and then go sit on the internet and not actually
- 32:57Speaker 3: interact with a human being, you know, short of a screen. So,
- 33:00Speaker 3: I mean, we are, we've got potential to be that
- 33:03Speaker 3: society if we don't come back to our senses and
- 33:07Speaker 3: become a functional interacting society.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. It's like everything I've always wanted, but now
- 33:14Speaker 1: that I've got it, you know, it's like, it's like,
- 33:16Speaker 1: maybe it's not good for all society.
- 33:18Speaker 3: So it becomes your everyday life.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Not a dream anymore. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I mean, at my job, we basically have all gone
- 33:27Speaker 1: work from home and, and it's basically, I had to
- 33:30Speaker 1: go back to the office to pick up like some,
- 33:33Speaker 1: I don't know, like a coffee mugs, important things, you know?
- 33:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:38Speaker 1: So, you know, And it is like you feel like
- 33:42Speaker 1: Charlton Heston and the Omega Man walking into the building.
- 33:45Speaker 1: You know, I feel like I needed one of those
- 33:47Speaker 1: like Uzis with the silencer and just like, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 1: looking for the zombies. I mean, it was it was
- 33:53Speaker 1: creepy and weird and everything is like and it is
- 33:56Speaker 1: like a frozen world. time capsule from like 2019, you know,
- 34:02Speaker 1: it's like all this calendars on the wall.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:05Speaker 1: It's like dusty calendars, you know, you know, you know,
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, I don't know. Mandalorian references or something. I
- 34:16Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know.
- 34:19Speaker 3: So anyway, I sidetracked you from the, the girls are
- 34:22Speaker 3: trying to interact with humans.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:24Speaker 1: So they were trying and they just, they were just like,
- 34:27Speaker 1: this is not fun, you know? And I'll go like,
- 34:29Speaker 1: I go like, yeah, you know, that's sort of the
- 34:31Speaker 1: thing about conventions. They're really fun in your brain. But
- 34:37Speaker 1: but but I mean, I was going like, well, hey,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, all you're missing out on are like panels,
- 34:45Speaker 1: which is not going to be the actual guy who
- 34:46Speaker 1: drew the man. The manga or the anime is going
- 34:49Speaker 1: to be like super fans like yourself, you know.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Whoever they suckered to sit at the table today.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Right, right. And then you'll miss out on the stuff
- 34:58Speaker 1: in the dealer's room that you can get on internet anyway. Yeah,
- 35:02Speaker 1: that's true. You don't have to fork over $ 30 for
- 35:08Speaker 1: a widescreen European cut of Lifeforce nowadays.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not saying.
- 35:16Speaker 3: I never bought any of those special tapes.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Yeah. No, no, absolutely not. All hypothetical. I'm just saying that, that, that.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Now it's just on YouTube for free anyway. Oh yeah.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Or you'll to be it up and it's like, at.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Least that way somebody is getting paid for it. So
- 35:32Speaker 3: it's all well and good.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So I said like, look, you're not missing anything, but
- 35:38Speaker 1: we tried, we did try to sneak in. Uh, we're, uh,
- 35:42Speaker 1: like the thing was like spread out all over the place.
- 35:45Speaker 3: So, That's what it seems to be in your setup.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Cause yeah, I was surprised what a spread out thing
- 35:51Speaker 3: that dragon con was like, I'm so used to everything
- 35:53Speaker 3: being under one roof, but they were, I mean, you were,
- 35:56Speaker 3: one thing was like blocks away. I'm just like, it
- 35:58Speaker 3: was weird that you were like out on the street
- 36:00Speaker 3: as much as you were. Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 1: It takes over the city.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yeah. And, uh, and so, so we go up this
- 36:08Speaker 1: escalator out of a food court and, uh, I go, Oh,
- 36:11Speaker 1: I see. I saw signs up on the second level.
- 36:14Speaker 1: I go like, Oh, look at that. They got a
- 36:15Speaker 1: role play gaming, you know, tabletop gaming. And that's the
- 36:20Speaker 1: convention up there. So let's just go up there, you know?
- 36:22Speaker 1: And so we took the escalator up and, you know,
- 36:26Speaker 1: and there's a security guard. I just act dumb. You'll
- 36:28Speaker 1: walk by them.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I'm sure they get a lot of that at any convention.
- 36:35Speaker 3: People that don't know what they're doing.
- 36:36Speaker 6: Right.
- 36:37Speaker 1: And so, So I should have just told the girls, like,
- 36:40Speaker 1: stay with me, stay close, you know, keep following my lead,
- 36:43Speaker 1: you know. And so they walk by the guy, you know,
- 36:47Speaker 1: and and and I hear, sir, sir. And I'm going like,
- 36:53Speaker 1: do to do. I don't know who's talking to, you know,
- 36:55Speaker 1: and the and my my my, you know, law abiding,
- 37:01Speaker 1: fair playing kids.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I go like, Dad. Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 1: And I'm like, what?
- 37:05Speaker 3: You're doing it wrong.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I turn around and go, oh, what's going on? He
- 37:10Speaker 1: goes like, sir, where's your badge?
- 37:12Speaker 3: And I'm going like, badge, badge, badge? I don't need
- 37:15Speaker 3: no stinking badges. I come to this hotel all the time.
- 37:20Speaker 1: I'm going like, sir, I got a badge. I was like, oh,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I had no idea what's going on. I
- 37:26Speaker 1: just wander around. I just wander through life.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Man, I own this hotel. I can go wherever I want.
- 37:35Speaker 6: Right.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's something I've learned from my father-in-law,
- 37:40Speaker 1: you can get away with a lot. If you just act,
- 37:42Speaker 1: if you're just nice and dumb, you know, they don't,
- 37:44Speaker 1: they don't get mad at you.
- 37:46Speaker 3: And it's like, ah, you poor soul. All right, go
- 37:48Speaker 3: on your merry way.
- 37:50Speaker 1: No, I guess my father, my father-in-law is not going
- 37:53Speaker 1: to listen to this, but he just, he just plays like,
- 37:56Speaker 1: oh man, I had no idea. And he gets away
- 37:58Speaker 1: with murder and I've seen it. I've seen it year
- 38:01Speaker 1: after year after year. And I just go like, okay,
- 38:04Speaker 1: that seems to work. I'm going to adopt, but my
- 38:06Speaker 1: kids ratted me out, you know?
- 38:08Speaker 3: And, uh, I mean, that's their job. Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 1: That's what they keep, keep me in line, you know? But, uh,
- 38:13Speaker 1: so yeah, we left, they, they had their, you know, uh,
- 38:18Speaker 1: they were both like, kind of like shaken and overwhelmed
- 38:21Speaker 1: by the experience. And, um, and so I said like, uh,
- 38:27Speaker 1: so like, you know, donuts make that, I'll go away.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Another good life thing. I'm teaching them again.
- 38:37Speaker 3: To look forward into the future. Again, I quite often
- 38:41Speaker 3: think we're all going to be the future of Wally.
- 38:44Speaker 3: yeah just gonna be floating around little people floating in
- 38:48Speaker 3: chairs eating donuts all day in front of the screen.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Whatever you feel uncomfortable kids just eat a couple of
- 38:54Speaker 1: donuts and it just all goes away it takes the
- 38:57Speaker 1: pain away each each your emotions it's it's totally what
- 39:01Speaker 1: we do it's a it's totally acceptable you know yeah
- 39:05Speaker 1: yeah so i'm just you know ruining my kids day
- 39:08Speaker 1: by day.
- 39:08Speaker 3: I mean you're their parent that's what you do that's
- 39:11Speaker 3: what i do that's what i do that's that's it's
- 39:13Speaker 3: given it's in the bios.
- 39:14Speaker 1: That's right it is it is we got to keep
- 39:16Speaker 1: therapists in in business you know i mean you know
- 39:19Speaker 1: so it's good stuff good stuff yeah that was my
- 39:22Speaker 1: latest and everything so that was a that was a
- 39:25Speaker 1: that was a ramble that was a meltdown there you
- 39:28Speaker 1: go there we go world look at you yeah yeah
- 39:30Speaker 1: look at me look at me.
- 39:33Speaker 3: So i knew we would be able to cover that
- 39:37Speaker 3: re-entry into the world but other than that we were
- 39:40Speaker 3: just like i don't know we can talk about stuff we.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Watched so yeah yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Have you seen anything lately Well, let's we'll start with
- 39:49Speaker 3: my now.
- 39:51Speaker 1: I can't remember. Is it David Keith or Keith David?
- 39:54Speaker 1: It's David Keith.
- 39:55Speaker 3: One of those guys.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Yeah. OK. OK. So I watch I had a David
- 39:59Speaker 1: Keith run in and actually had a Keith David run
- 40:03Speaker 1: in because I rewatched Firestarter for the first time since
- 40:06Speaker 1: the 80s.
- 40:07Speaker 3: And again, I don't think I've watched it since it
- 40:09Speaker 3: was on cable back.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Where back it was on cable. You probably
- 40:13Speaker 1: watched it 12 times.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure. But it was always just sort of
- 40:17Speaker 3: on in the background, like half the, you know, most
- 40:19Speaker 3: of the TV now I don't really pay attention to.
- 40:21Speaker 3: So sometimes even the ones I kind of saw, I
- 40:24Speaker 3: don't can, I don't even count. I'm like, no, I
- 40:26Speaker 3: should just watch this for real.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:29Speaker 1: So yeah. Rewatch the old fire starter. And, and I
- 40:33Speaker 1: remember it being amazing. And man, things have changed.
- 40:38Speaker 3: See, I don't even remember that much. I remember it
- 40:42Speaker 3: being a thing. And I feel like even then going,
- 40:48Speaker 3: those fire effects don't really look all that great.
- 40:52Speaker 1: They're so ridiculous uh uh there's it's like uh and
- 40:56Speaker 1: i love it when people have like telekinesis but it
- 40:58Speaker 1: does things that telekinesis should never be able to do
- 41:01Speaker 1: like uh like you know uh make the uh make
- 41:05Speaker 1: a oh like she uses her teleconnect powers to make
- 41:07Speaker 1: all the coins come out of a phone at one
- 41:10Speaker 1: point and i'm going like how are you.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Doing how are you doing that what are you I mean,
- 41:14Speaker 3: you can't do that with your hands. Why would you
- 41:15Speaker 3: be able to do that with your mind?
- 41:17Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. These powers are amazing. And at the end,
- 41:22Speaker 1: the ending, the last 10 minutes of Firestarter is what
- 41:25Speaker 1: you remember. And it is a laugh riot. And when
- 41:29Speaker 1: she burns down the shop and kills all the doctors
- 41:33Speaker 1: and the scientists, it is a riot. It is, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 1: it is a how, you know, and because I forgot
- 41:41Speaker 1: that she became becomes bulletproof. I mean, they're like shooting
- 41:44Speaker 1: guns at her and the bullets are bouncing off because
- 41:47Speaker 1: that's what happens.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Is that telekinetic power or is that the power of fire?
- 41:52Speaker 3: I don't know which, but it.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Wasn't like she was making the bullet burst into flame.
- 41:56Speaker 1: She just deflected bullets all of a sudden.
- 41:58Speaker 3: And it's handy to have. I keep hoping that'll happen
- 42:01Speaker 3: because people get shot all the time. So it would
- 42:03Speaker 3: be really handy.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Absolutely.
- 42:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Because, I mean, she has an army around her. So,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I mean, she has to have something. But what's so
- 42:11Speaker 1: great about the Firestarter is for whatever reason, the director says,
- 42:17Speaker 1: before she lights somebody on fire, they all have to
- 42:20Speaker 1: beg pitifully for their lives before she lights up. It's like, okay,
- 42:26Speaker 1: maybe I'm a psycho, but the acting in, in those
- 42:29Speaker 1: scenes are like so good. And, uh, it just makes it,
- 42:33Speaker 1: I mean, it's, it's camp.
- 42:35Speaker 3: But it's, uh, This all feels way more like a
- 42:38Speaker 3: super dork wish fulfillment. Not only am.
- 42:42Speaker 7: I going to kick all their asses one day, but
- 42:44Speaker 7: they're going to beg me not to do it first.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they're going to be like, under my power, I'm
- 42:49Speaker 1: going to be so strong.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Oh, please don't hurt me. And then I will hurt
- 42:53Speaker 3: them anyway because they made fun of me that one time. Yeah,
- 42:58Speaker 3: that's kind of what it feels like. oh man that's
- 43:01Speaker 3: sad it's not enough to burn them alive.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I also that's true that's true like whiny babies that's
- 43:07Speaker 1: right whiny babies right i'm gonna make a pee the
- 43:09Speaker 1: pants and then i'm gonna beat them up you know.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Uh yeah this is just reverse bullying.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah i think that's what it does um but but
- 43:18Speaker 1: no firestar is because they made that remake you know
- 43:21Speaker 1: and that actually.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Make a show too or was i just confusing one
- 43:26Speaker 3: for the other i can't keep track anymore there's too
- 43:28Speaker 3: many projects.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah yeah no no they they there was the
- 43:31Speaker 1: early nineties or mid nineties, uh, what's it called with
- 43:35Speaker 1: Malcolm McDowell, of course, you know, like, uh.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Like anything with Malcolm McDowell.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 43:41Speaker 1: We're dust them off, put them out there. Uh, it's, uh, yeah,
- 43:45Speaker 1: they made like a TV pilot that was going to,
- 43:48Speaker 1: that they turned into a movie for sci-fi and, uh,
- 43:51Speaker 1: you know, but anyway, I never watched that.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Yep. That sounds like, yeah, exactly.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Exactly. But, uh, But yeah, no, I always thought, you know,
- 43:58Speaker 1: they should make a TV show so they could go
- 44:00Speaker 1: like a fire starter, you know, in the in the
- 44:05Speaker 1: in the opening team. That's basically my brain. So then
- 44:09Speaker 1: she can be.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Like basically everything just comes down to the same of
- 44:14Speaker 3: that type of let's make a show just becomes the
- 44:17Speaker 3: Incredible Hulk. yeah she gets into adventures by the end
- 44:21Speaker 3: she uses her powers and everybody's freaked out and then
- 44:24Speaker 3: she has to wander off to another town and like
- 44:26Speaker 3: start her lonely existence again it's it's the fugitive it's
- 44:30Speaker 3: incredible hulk it's like every show that came after that
- 44:33Speaker 3: became that same scenario it's it's kung fu i mean
- 44:36Speaker 3: they're all that same i just wander the earth and
- 44:38Speaker 3: get in crazy adventures and sometimes have to light people
- 44:41Speaker 3: on fire you know yeah.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I love that that would have been the best show
- 44:44Speaker 1: if at the end of every episode she lights somebody
- 44:46Speaker 1: on fire and that's how that solves the problem.
- 44:48Speaker 3: I mean that's kind of how it works right.
- 44:53Speaker 1: But the better one was the other thing was the
- 44:57Speaker 1: crow tv show where he was like working for the
- 44:59Speaker 1: lapd or something.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Do you remember that as much as i love the
- 45:04Speaker 3: movies and i use that word okay love the first
- 45:07Speaker 3: one i'm just yeah oddly perplexed by the other three
- 45:13Speaker 3: yeah yeah the fourth one in potato i need to
- 45:15Speaker 3: revisit that fourth one because it is like a train
- 45:18Speaker 3: wreck but like the most enjoyable train like the rest
- 45:21Speaker 3: of the cast was amazing though yeah he was weird
- 45:24Speaker 3: casting as our crow, but like everyone else involved, I
- 45:27Speaker 3: was like, wait, you've got Dennis Hopper to be.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Wait, is, is that bones?
- 45:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Is that freaking angel? What, what is he doing in here?
- 45:35Speaker 1: So much stuff. So, and the director of six string samurai.
- 45:39Speaker 1: So you're going like, wow, this has got some real pedigree.
- 45:43Speaker 1: So even though it's not any damn good, it's.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Very, it's good. Yeah. Like through your fingers of like,
- 45:51Speaker 3: Oh my God.
- 45:51Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:54Speaker 3: And I didn't hate the third one. As I remember,
- 45:56Speaker 3: I have not seen it in 25 years, but.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Like I, right.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Yeah. It's only that second one that angered me.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Right. Right. But yeah, I didn't, again, I getting back
- 46:06Speaker 3: to the show, I didn't really watch the show. Like
- 46:08Speaker 3: I remember it came on and kind of thought it
- 46:11Speaker 3: could be interesting, but again, sometimes it's like, that's too
- 46:15Speaker 3: much story to fill with like, we've got a very
- 46:17Speaker 3: specific scenario in that story and it kind of works
- 46:20Speaker 3: within the confines of a movie, but, even trying to
- 46:24Speaker 3: continue that story with like a sequel would be hard
- 46:26Speaker 3: to do. I mean, it's, it's, it's one arc, especially.
- 46:29Speaker 1: The Raven version of it, at least.
- 46:31Speaker 3: So it's like, it's really hard to, fill up, you know,
- 46:34Speaker 3: especially back in the old days when there was like
- 46:36Speaker 3: 30 episodes in a season.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yeah, seriously.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Now maybe you could do 8 or 12 and you
- 46:41Speaker 3: could come up with something, but back in the day
- 46:43Speaker 3: it was a lot of episodes to come up with.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of stuff you had to come up
- 46:47Speaker 1: with for the crow to do, you know, like save
- 46:49Speaker 1: an orphanage.
- 46:52Speaker 3: We gotta band together and save the rec center.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that kind of thing. You know, but I don't know.
- 47:01Speaker 1: But yeah, the crow... TV show. I've probably only watched
- 47:04Speaker 1: one episode. It just seemed like it. Remember it being like,
- 47:07Speaker 1: I want you to meet your new partner and it's
- 47:09Speaker 1: the crow. And, uh, and, uh, I remember like him,
- 47:13Speaker 1: it was like middle of the daylight. Like it was
- 47:15Speaker 1: probably supposed to be LA, but I'm sure it was Toronto.
- 47:18Speaker 1: They were like, uh, I'm sure he was like, hell
- 47:20Speaker 1: in the, it was like the TJ hooker sketch from
- 47:23Speaker 1: Saturday night live where he's just on the hood of.
- 47:25Speaker 3: A car, hanging on the hood of the car. That's
- 47:27Speaker 3: what he was doing.
- 47:28Speaker 1: That's what he was doing. I was going like, this
- 47:30Speaker 1: is hilarious.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Well, again, if he's still got those bulletproof powers, that
- 47:35Speaker 3: comes in handy.
- 47:36Speaker 1: It does man. Fighting, fighting, petty crime, you know, one, one, uh,
- 47:42Speaker 1: pickpocket at a time, you know?
- 47:44Speaker 3: Yeah. This all seems fine.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Sounds good.
- 47:47Speaker 6: Sounds good.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Oh crap. Uh, Okay, so, but it was supposed to
- 47:52Speaker 1: be Firestarter remake, but then Firestarter, but then we were
- 47:57Speaker 1: talking about Keith David. Rewind the brain train there. So
- 48:03Speaker 1: Keith David, I saw him in a film called Nope
- 48:08Speaker 1: that showed up.
- 48:09Speaker 3: That's one of the ones I was going to bring
- 48:13Speaker 3: up today.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Awesome, awesome. And, you know, the vibe around Nope the
- 48:20Speaker 1: people that I knew that went to go see it,
- 48:22Speaker 1: they were like, they said, Oh no, I went to
- 48:25Speaker 1: go see some other movie. And they said like, yeah,
- 48:27Speaker 1: we're in this movie because we walked out. They were drunk.
- 48:30Speaker 1: And we walked out of, we walked out of, uh, nope.
- 48:34Speaker 1: And so we're watching this tonight. And, uh, I go like, Oh, okay.
- 48:38Speaker 1: And I was like going, okay, that's one kind of
- 48:40Speaker 1: random person saying it's no good. And then somebody else
- 48:43Speaker 1: that I work with said, yeah, when it goes, or
- 48:45Speaker 1: I was going to go see it, but the reviews
- 48:47Speaker 1: were so bad. And then I heard somebody else who
- 48:49Speaker 1: didn't like him. you know, so my expectations for no,
- 48:52Speaker 1: not very high. And, uh, I, I actually walked out
- 48:55Speaker 1: really loving it.
- 48:56Speaker 3: So, you know, I, I mean, I, I saw, I
- 48:59Speaker 3: think I first saw the poster and was like, Oh,
- 49:01Speaker 3: that's amazing. Like that's, that's not what I expected from
- 49:05Speaker 3: any movie really. Yeah. And then, um, saw the trailer
- 49:08Speaker 3: and I was like, well, I mean, he's, he's just
- 49:12Speaker 3: kind of turned into this amazing director. So I'm like,
- 49:14Speaker 3: anything Jordan Peele does now, I'm at least going to
- 49:17Speaker 3: be interested in. So it's like, I, I, I went
- 49:20Speaker 3: in looking forward to it, but I just didn't get
- 49:23Speaker 3: around to it in the theater. So I knew it
- 49:25Speaker 3: finally came out and I went and got me a copy.
- 49:28Speaker 3: And I was like, okay, here's my chance. And again,
- 49:31Speaker 3: I really liked what he's done. just what he's doing.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Like the vibe that he creates is so good. And like,
- 49:37Speaker 3: visually he's become such an amazing director that like, it
- 49:40Speaker 3: looks terrific. And then he's still like, even switching to sci-fi,
- 49:46Speaker 3: like is telling a really creepy story that like, it's just, yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 3: I was, I was pretty, pretty happy with it. I
- 49:52Speaker 3: got to say. And I think he, he re he
- 49:54Speaker 3: kind of reined it in. I think that was my
- 49:56Speaker 3: issue with us because us is a cool, really cool idea,
- 50:00Speaker 3: but it's also like two cool ideas.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:03Speaker 3: So the first two thirds of it is one movie.
- 50:06Speaker 3: And then it ends up at the end going down
- 50:08Speaker 3: an entirely different road that they sort of tie them together.
- 50:12Speaker 3: But for the most part, I'm like, you kind of
- 50:13Speaker 3: could have done a whole nother movie with that in
- 50:15Speaker 3: story and been like its own separate thing. But here
- 50:20Speaker 3: everything's connected enough. It feels like it's kind of focused
- 50:23Speaker 3: a little more than us was.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Well, I like. What is it called? Get out. I
- 50:31Speaker 1: like get out. I liked Us, but I thought both
- 50:35Speaker 1: of those suffered from bad endings. I didn't like how
- 50:40Speaker 1: they wrapped up.
- 50:42Speaker 3: It's been a while on Get Out. I don't remember
- 50:44Speaker 3: having a bad feeling, but again, I know some people
- 50:49Speaker 3: love it and some people don't really sing its praises.
- 50:53Speaker 3: It's kind of hit and miss with a lot of people.
- 50:55Speaker 1: I would say it's like 95 of a good movie
- 50:58Speaker 1: you know and then this i once once we got
- 51:00Speaker 1: into brain transplants i was going like i don't i
- 51:03Speaker 1: don't like i don't know how this i'm trying to
- 51:05Speaker 1: figure out the science or the what's going on you
- 51:08Speaker 1: know i think that's.
- 51:09Speaker 3: What i liked about like it was creepy in the
- 51:11Speaker 3: first two thirds and then when you get to the
- 51:13Speaker 3: ending i'm just like all right we have just thrown
- 51:16Speaker 3: the rules out the window like i gave him so
- 51:18Speaker 3: many points for like man you did it like yeah
- 51:21Speaker 3: whether it made sense or not you were like screw
- 51:22Speaker 3: screw it. Here's my movie. Like sometimes the audacity I'm
- 51:26Speaker 3: just impressed with. So absolutely. I think that was my
- 51:29Speaker 3: takeaway from that one. Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Well, all his movies, they have the feeling of, Hey,
- 51:34Speaker 1: this is like actually from a filmmaker with like a
- 51:37Speaker 1: point of view and things, cool things he wants to
- 51:40Speaker 1: put on screen, you know? And, and so, yeah, he's
- 51:43Speaker 1: got great visuals. He's got great story. He's got great acting,
- 51:47Speaker 1: you know, just, just us. I was like, I was
- 51:49Speaker 1: going like, so, is there like a, is there like,
- 51:53Speaker 1: like a maze of stuff like under all of America
- 51:56Speaker 1: where there's like people like interacting with like doing.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Like saying like the beginning, we don't understand any of it.
- 52:04Speaker 3: It's just creepy. And it works really well. It's only
- 52:07Speaker 3: when you get to the end and you start trying
- 52:09Speaker 3: to make sense of it.
- 52:10Speaker 6: Right.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Wait, so how does, but then, so, I mean, like
- 52:13Speaker 3: to me, you needed a whole movie to try to
- 52:15Speaker 3: explain that crazy world that he set up versus just
- 52:19Speaker 3: the weird, you know, evil version of yourself out there
- 52:22Speaker 3: waiting to do, you know, horrible things to you was
- 52:25Speaker 3: creepy in and of itself. Like you didn't even have
- 52:27Speaker 3: to explain it almost. You could just leave it as
- 52:30Speaker 3: a weird thing that happened. And, but yeah, as you
- 52:32Speaker 3: get into the end, I'm like, that's too much direct
- 52:35Speaker 3: cram in the last 15, 20 minutes of this movie.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Like that's a lot to deal with.
- 52:40Speaker 1: It's like, I like how all this is looking and
- 52:42Speaker 1: I like the vibe, but I'm so confused.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Of what the tone of it is. And just the
- 52:48Speaker 3: visuals are beautiful. But yeah, by the end, I'm like, dude, again,
- 52:52Speaker 3: there's something like you need a series. Like you can
- 52:54Speaker 3: start out with like the first two or three episodes
- 52:56Speaker 3: or the creepy other part and then give us like
- 52:58Speaker 3: eight episodes of like the rest of this. Okay. Now
- 53:01Speaker 3: here's the world we're living in. And like, it would
- 53:04Speaker 3: probably once again, piss people off, but at least I
- 53:07Speaker 3: feel like he could have room to, sort of tell
- 53:10Speaker 3: that story. Right.
- 53:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 53:12Speaker 1: And at least it's, it's like, you're going like, Oh,
- 53:14Speaker 1: I haven't seen that in a movie before. So, you know,
- 53:17Speaker 1: you're going.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Like all of this stuff, you know, every one of
- 53:19Speaker 3: those has been pretty damned original.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 1: I was just like going like at the end of
- 53:25Speaker 1: Nope with the, the floating, uh, with the floating, uh,
- 53:29Speaker 1: cowboy and the ufo you know i'm not going to
- 53:33Speaker 1: get too spoilery but i was just going like this
- 53:35Speaker 1: is just something i've not seen in a movie before
- 53:37Speaker 1: so i'm just like so happy you know.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Yeah because i i knew from the get-go it was
- 53:42Speaker 3: you know sort of involving aliens or whatever but yeah
- 53:46Speaker 3: when we get to the reveal and i won't even
- 53:48Speaker 3: go into that but the reveal of what exactly they
- 53:51Speaker 3: are versus the old school traditional version of this i'm
- 53:54Speaker 3: just like oh that's cool and again if you're if
- 53:57Speaker 3: you're a hardcore internet geek like this is a real
- 54:00Speaker 3: thing that's out there you know i i never went
- 54:03Speaker 3: that far down that road i just kind of like
- 54:05Speaker 3: the old cheesy sci-fi version of it but yeah seeing
- 54:09Speaker 3: this as a new option of things that could be
- 54:11Speaker 3: out there i'm like oh that's cool and like that
- 54:13Speaker 3: gives you a whole nother thing to go into and
- 54:18Speaker 3: and again the thing i think is maybe the most
- 54:21Speaker 3: interesting part is such a minor one but the gordy
- 54:25Speaker 3: plot line and then we get one flashback and then
- 54:36Speaker 3: it becomes sort of the overarching theme of the whole
- 54:40Speaker 3: thing is like you you can't put a party hat
- 54:43Speaker 3: on a wild.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Animal yeah yeah yeah.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Takeaway from this and i was like oh no that
- 54:48Speaker 3: scene is amazing like especially like the buildup, like that
- 54:52Speaker 3: lead as we're coming in and it's so long going
- 54:56Speaker 3: into that room. And then we get that reveal of
- 54:58Speaker 3: where we are. Cause you're just like, what is this flashback?
- 55:01Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden you're like.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Oh, Oh, now I see.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Oh shit. Oh my God. That scene is amazing.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Oh my God. I loved it at the, at the,
- 55:13Speaker 1: at the cowboy theater. They had like the, the, the
- 55:16Speaker 1: cute teenage girl who was wearing the veil over her face. Oh,
- 55:21Speaker 1: I love that. I love it. Cause you always hear
- 55:23Speaker 1: those stories of like, like people who get pet chimpanzees.
- 55:27Speaker 1: And at the certain point that they become adolescent, they just,
- 55:31Speaker 1: they're not your friend anymore.
- 55:33Speaker 3: You know, that was the fate of bubbles. Yeah. Actually,
- 55:38Speaker 3: both of the kings of music, because at one point
- 55:41Speaker 3: Elvis also had a monkey. Oh, gee. And it went
- 55:44Speaker 3: through that same thing of like, oh, yeah, super cute.
- 55:46Speaker 3: And then after a while, like he was off doing
- 55:48Speaker 3: other stuff. And then the mafia was just hanging out going, OK,
- 55:52Speaker 3: now we've got to take care of this wild animal. Yeah,
- 55:54Speaker 3: it was like been pent up like it's not around
- 55:57Speaker 3: anybody like him. and still wants to act like a
- 56:00Speaker 3: wild animal and we're trying to put him in a
- 56:02Speaker 3: funny suit and drive him around in a limo and
- 56:04Speaker 3: like you can't do that so yeah all of these
- 56:08Speaker 3: you know people that try to just take a wild
- 56:10Speaker 3: animal and bring it into your regular old.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Life like yeah no kidding yeah that was excellent that
- 56:20Speaker 4: was excellent yeah yeah yeah no that whole sub that
- 56:23Speaker 4: whole subplot about about the sitcom that went wrong.
- 56:26Speaker 1: That was so good.
- 56:28Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And I wish I had seen it in a theater,
- 56:30Speaker 1: you know, I was like, you know, and again.
- 56:32Speaker 3: I give like, this is points to Jordan Peele because
- 56:35Speaker 3: he's telling these stories, but it's like, it's not like,
- 56:38Speaker 3: super flashy Hollywood like you. I'm watching. That's the thing.
- 56:41Speaker 3: As the dork who was like, I want to make movies.
- 56:43Speaker 3: And then I'm watching our guy be the animal trainer.
- 56:46Speaker 3: And that set looks like the most horrible place to
- 56:49Speaker 3: exist ever. Oh, yeah. See, this is why I don't
- 56:53Speaker 3: think I wanted to go down that road. Oh, not
- 56:56Speaker 3: that it's an option. But the more I see like
- 56:58Speaker 3: other versions and hear people tell me stories about it.
- 57:01Speaker 3: I'm like, I like this version. I like talking about
- 57:04Speaker 3: plot and fun geek activities. But like once you get
- 57:07Speaker 3: into the knee deep in the blood and guts that
- 57:12Speaker 3: is the movie industry, I'm just like, oh, no, a
- 57:14Speaker 3: lot of this is not fun at all. So that
- 57:17Speaker 3: we get these little snippets of that. We get, you know,
- 57:20Speaker 3: the Stephen Young storyline is phenomenal. And then we've got,
- 57:24Speaker 3: you know, our animal trainers and they inherited this business.
- 57:27Speaker 3: But it's got this history built into it. the first
- 57:30Speaker 3: moving picture. Like it goes back to like, they sort
- 57:33Speaker 3: of made up the connection between them, but like, that's
- 57:35Speaker 3: the real thing. That guy was a real guy. And like,
- 57:39Speaker 3: like they said, like he's the first, you know, stunt man,
- 57:41Speaker 3: animal trainer and screen ever, you know, that is fascinating.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Like there's so much stuff about Hollywood, you know, old
- 57:50Speaker 3: school you know hollywood lore that i love but then
- 57:53Speaker 3: you see people that have to deal with it day
- 57:56Speaker 3: in and day out and you're watching people applaud for
- 57:59Speaker 3: donna mills for walking on set and i'm just like
- 58:03Speaker 3: yeah there's some stuff that's just out.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Of whack yeah yeah did you notice who was playing
- 58:09Speaker 1: the director on in that.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Scene Oh, I don't know.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Did I?
- 58:15Speaker 6: You did.
- 58:16Speaker 1: And you're correct. That was Oswald Crooked.
- 58:19Speaker 3: I saw him in the credits there. And I was
- 58:23Speaker 3: trying to decide because I know him as a director.
- 58:26Speaker 3: So I was like, why is he just show? But again,
- 58:29Speaker 3: I guess Jordan likes his work too.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, yeah, he makes movies that nerds like. Other
- 58:34Speaker 1: creepy movies. Other creepy movies, right. But yeah, I always
- 58:42Speaker 1: liked seeing him show up because I get those, you know,
- 58:46Speaker 1: Anthony Perkins vibes, you know, off of him. Oh, yeah.
- 58:49Speaker 3: He's another one that has a crazy Hollywood story.
- 58:52Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 58:53Speaker 3: Both of his parents.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Seriously. Seriously. Yeah, yeah. So, no, I was like, because
- 58:59Speaker 1: you're just going like, you're trying to connect, you know,
- 59:02Speaker 1: how the, you know, the horse... uh, Connects to the UFO,
- 59:06Speaker 1: connects to the monkey story. And it just puts you
- 59:10Speaker 1: in such a kind of a discombobulated. It is.
- 59:14Speaker 3: And then as it all starts to come together, you're
- 59:16Speaker 3: just like, oh, this is really impressive writing.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Yes, that's what you get. The writing was so good
- 59:23Speaker 1: and the performances were so good. And and just like
- 59:27Speaker 1: the weird state of mind that puts you in watching it.
- 59:32Speaker 1: And I thought I enjoyed how this one wrapped up.
- 59:35Speaker 1: So I would say probably all in all, I had
- 59:39Speaker 1: probably an overall most satisfying experience with this of his
- 59:44Speaker 1: three movies, which makes sense because usually if everybody hates something,
- 59:49Speaker 1: I probably like it a little bit more than most people. So,
- 59:51Speaker 1: you know, what do we call it? And it does
- 59:55Speaker 1: give you like a nice, you know, an alternate to
- 59:58Speaker 1: like M night Shamalam, you know, you know, who, you know,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: another writer director who, you know, tells his own story. So,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: you know, you can appreciate that, but you know, they're,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: they're kind of similar, but I would say this last
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: one was, was his, his Nope was Nope was great, man.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: It was, you know, I did, I did think it
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: was kind of weird that, our creature not to get
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: too spoilery again but massively changes by the end and
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: like so much so I was like is this the
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: same creature but then watching after the fact they do
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: still keep referring to it as the same creature so
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: I guess you just have to one up for the
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: finale or something but that was like more from a
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: scientific angle of like wait so how does what is
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: you know I think it was doing so well in
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: its basic form I think it would have been fine
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: to not have to do a grand finale version but
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: it's cool, but I was like, I don't think it
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: even had to do that, but yeah, it's still cool.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Yeah. It's cool. It's cool. I guess they had to, yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: As you said, I was trying to figure out if
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: there was like.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: A mothership version. Yeah. That's more of what I was
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: thinking at first.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: And, or, and, but the movie makes you, you know, you,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: you're trying to put all these pieces together and see
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: how they connect thematically and that when that happens, I
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: was going like, is this thematic or is, or, or
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: is this like, or is this as cool, you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: but it, it, it kind of, I like that the
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: movie makes you engage in it in that way.
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: You know, I think, I think that's part of the writing.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: Like he really does give you all these different pieces
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: and like sort of let's use play with some of
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: them while he's still piecing together the story he wants
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: to tell. So absolutely.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: And, and you could really get the, these people had
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: like real human motivations to, on what they were doing
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: and they were.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: And problems like, you know, they're problems. They aren't, again,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: it's not a fancy Hollywood story. He's about to lose
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: his business and his farm. She's busy kind of pimping
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: herself for her other stuff because she could care less
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: about the family business. Like it's way more human than
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: a lot of these kinds of stories are sometimes.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: And his performance was, so good as like have such
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: an understated, barely speaks, you know, just, but he felt
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: like a total real person. Everybody felt like real people.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: I mean, young, young goes a little, you know, you know,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: but he's great in it, you know, but yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: But our lead character is, You know, it just had
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: that kind of like so relatable kind of guy.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: And again, he is someone who's inherited this. So like
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: his dad is charisma. His dad is, you know, the
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: one that pieced this together and made them a successful business.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: And he's good at, you know, working with horses where
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: he doesn't have to talk to people. But now he's
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: left to, which again, an amazing opening scene. Now he's
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: left to like, have to deal with the other end
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: of it. So then he's kind of leaning on his sister,
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: but from day one, she wasn't reliable. So, He's just left.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: It's like, this isn't the type of person I am
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: so much. So I was like, dude, you need to
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: just like hire someone. Yeah. You're still can have the business,
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: but this is not you. You can't write the front man.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Cause it is not who you are.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Like, right.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Sometimes you gotta admit to yourself the things you are
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: and the thing.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. And he had the pressure of
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: trying to keep it together. His dad built it, you know,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and like trying to maintain it and, you know, all
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: that stuff was just, you know really put you in
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: the shoes of the guy and um and i like
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: it when you know they you know the the actual
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: him being a horse trainer he had the tools and
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the intelligence of how to handle this problem yeah you know.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: It's they really do see like okay well what are
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: we dealing with here and oh this is this is
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: how i would deal with it in my world so
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: this is what we need to do like.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Right, right. And not to talk bad about the Marvel movies,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: but usually, you know, there's so many movies and just
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: sort of like action movies or movies in general where.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: you solve the problem by throwing them off a building
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: at the end of the movie, you know, going back.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: To a recent episode. I did. That was my, you know,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: my takeaway from black Panther.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: There, I mean, there is a realistic way that I
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: would want to end this, but as heroes representing what
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: needs to be going on in the world and isn't like,
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: you also have to go a different way. Like you can't,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: if we're doing this as a heroic story, you can't
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: do it that way. Like you can't just kill the
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: bad guy because that's what he deserves. Now, I would
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: want to kill the bad guy because that's what he deserves.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: But again, I am not a Marvel hero, I suppose.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: So yeah, I, I, you, yeah, it's a different way
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: of looking at things once you get to those bigger,
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: you know, aspects of it all.
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I gotta, I gotta see that. It made like a
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: gazillion dollars and everything where nobody's going to the movies.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Again, I've got, I've got some issues with it, but
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: there's great stuff in the works. So, yeah, it's still
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: worth seeing. But this one, I mean, this one, if
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: nothing else, is worth being out there because we get
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: to hear Michael Wincott sing Purple People Eater.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: The michael wincott voice oh my god.
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: Purple people eater that i mean what else do you
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: need man and just his whole character i mean all
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: the characters the fries guy the michael wincott playing a
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: uh you know it trapped in his mind cinematographer.
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: A like fancy art house cinematographer that also is forced
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: to do commercials to survive.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Right right Oh man. He was so, that was, I
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: was like, man, it'd been a while since I'd seen
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: him in a movie.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: You know, and then he's, oh.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Man, he's so good. I don't fully understand his later maneuvers,
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: but in general, he's got a great character that once again,
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: doesn't say much, but when he does, it definitely brings
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: it home. Yeah.
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: You just say those off ball pretentious already things and
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: nobody understood what he was talking about. It's going like, oh,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: it's so good. And I guess it was just like,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: I liked how they lured him in like this great.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: It's like, I have like the impossible shot, you know,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I have this shot, you know, he's like, you know,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: that mess with his ego. Like, ah, there is no
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: shot that can't be, you know, and then you have
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: the hand crank.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: That's what I was just saying. Yeah. And they brought
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: in again, school Hollywood, not just a real world camera,
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: but a hand crank, non-electrical camera. I was like, that's amazing.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Hollywood lore right there. Yeah.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: So, yeah, I'm glad I didn't listen to the drunk
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: lady that was sitting next to me. You know, it's like, oh,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: a drunk lady at this movie tavern didn't like it.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: I'm not going to like it either.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: I don't trust other people's thoughts.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: You just kind of have to. Movies and music, man,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: you just got to... It's very personal. It's like politics
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: and religion. You just like... It's like I could... I
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: could sing the praises of Serpent Bird to somebody night
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: and day, and they'll never like Serpent Bird like I
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: like Serpent Bird.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: So the only way to bring it to them is
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: for them to watch Pink Flamingos and experience it the
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: way everyone should be. exactly i saw that scene on
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: the big screen for the first oh yeah oh like
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: that's the way i they were they were showing it
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: in the theater as like an anniversary edition or whatever
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: yeah i had not seen it before that and i
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: got there and it's an amazing movie but that scene
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: is maybe the most disturbing thing in that movie that's
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: saying a lot that there's any scene that is more
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: disturbing than the rest but yeah surfing bird is yeah
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: it's great things going on that don't need to be going.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: On that well yeah pink flamingos i think i just
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: had like a 50th or something i mean it's like
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: or it's crazy yeah yeah well i guess 72 let's
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: say it came out in 72 what would that be
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: that would be would.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: That be 50 we don't do math here okay anyway
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: yeah all right all right sorry yeah which is crazy
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: and like you know john waters has become such a
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: statesman and such a great voice i think i've I
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: just read one of his books or something.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: But yeah, he's like the grandmaster of crappy movies, you know,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: back when that meant something.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: Well, I mean, yeah, he was doing that kind of
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: weird shit when nobody would do that. You know, it's
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: like the stuff that he did was so... not just
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: ahead of its time cinematically, but also just like weird
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: in a way that other people weren't capturing at the time.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: And like, now you'll, you know, cell phone video of
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: some idiot doing something stupid, but like back then you had,
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: to put a lot of work into capturing even an
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: image of weird people like he knew let alone piecing
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: it together into a loose story of some sort yeah yeah.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Well that's the cool thing about john waters is it's
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: almost like mythical this mythical tale of a bunch of
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: weirdos in baltimore making this stuff at a time where
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: people weren't doing that.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: And it still is just as amazing to watch it
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: now like going back and watching some of those early
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: ones that i wasn't like what was the maniacs when
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: i like i hadn't even seen that before we did
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: that episode and i was just like this just the
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: footage of like the fact that you're on a street
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: in Baltimore and you've got this car that you borrowed
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: from a friend and divine pretending to be a giant
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: monster coming down the street. And I'm like, you've captured
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: this time and place. And like, sometimes that's what I
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: love about cinema. And again, the history of it is like,
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: not just the story that you're telling, but also you've
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: captured this person at this time, this place at this time.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: And like, it's a time capsule of so many different aspects.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: And also just like looking back at like things that
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: you're like, oh, you couldn't do this now and you
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: couldn't do this. Right. Especially in the stuff John Waters
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: was doing. So I'm just like, yeah, I mean, they're
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: just such an amazing time capsule of everything involved.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: He's a perfect example of that kind of stuff.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Absolutely. And you get a feeling like when you watch
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: something like that, because, you know, there isn't 17 executive
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: producers listed on it. You know, you might have it's
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: John Waters point of view as influenced by that group
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: of people he was around at the time, you know.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: And so that it's got like a special chemistry in
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: those movies that you actually feel like you're you're hearing
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: from a point of view and not, you know, something
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: that's been, you know. overproduced you know basically not not
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: too many chefs in the.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Kitchen minimally produced yeah because that one was multiple maniacs
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: the one i was talking about oh yeah oh okay
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: yeah i remember talking to him and i was like
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: well that shot of the guy out in front of
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: the church shooting up he was like yeah i just
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: shot that like i don't i didn't know that guy
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: he was standing out in front of a church shooting
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: up and i got my camera out and shot it
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: and like right it's just stuff that was going on
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: around his weird little world. And like, there's so many
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: of those things that were like, Oh no, we were
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: on so many drugs when we shot that.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: It's just weird things that came together. So it's more
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: amazing that he pieced them together into kind of a story.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: Sometimes you're right.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: And you go like, what is the route to become
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: a Hollywood director? You know, you got to go to
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Southern California, you know, the USC film school and become
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: like Robert Zemeckis and everything. And you've got to like,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: to get into that school. If you're, if your parents
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: don't work for full house, you know, you've got to like,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you got to like, you know, have like all the
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: best grades. And so you got to be like the overachiever.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: And what's great about John Waters, these guys were like,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: you know, quote, you know, quote unquote losers.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: Degenerates, I'm sure even he would argue.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Degenerate loser weirdos, you know, and their movies last while,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: you know, other things don't. Well, I guess they last
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: for degenerate weirdo losers.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: Well, and then to to get to that height, to
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: put out what has become his cash cow of all time,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: his like PG rated movie that then brought him money
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: enough that he didn't have to work.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: But to be like a huge name in the industry
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: as he was and then just walk away from it.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: He's just like, you know, it's too much trouble to
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: make a movie.
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: As it became a big studio thing, he's like, I
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: can write a book. And it's all my point of
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: view and it's just as easy to do. In fact,
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: a million times easier. And then I just go on
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: a tour and I talk about it for a year
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: and I make just as much, if not probably a
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: lot more than I did for a little directing job
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: that some studio would want to pay me. So absolutely.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: That's what I think is interesting is that like as
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: huge a name as he is in film, He hasn't
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: done one in so many years because it's too much trouble.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: He just didn't care.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: It's like him and Carpenter, man. Pretty much.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: They're just like, eh, these are a lot of work.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: They are.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Just going to sit in my house and play with
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: my keyboard. Yeah, pretty much that. Now I've switched to Carpenter.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: At this point, we're going on and we've still got
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: plenty more to talk about. So I say we wrap
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: up this one. We'll pause and then come back for
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: the next episode as we continue on this crazy journey
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: of ours.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Sounds good.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: So until next time, otherwise that about does it. We
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: will turn next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: A way to everybody's head about the bird. Thank you.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: .
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: .
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: .
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: .
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: .
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: .
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: When everybody's here, I'm about to burn. Burn, burn, burn.
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: Burn is the word, the word, burn, burn, burn.
- 1:14:47Speaker 8: Burn is the word, the word, burn, burn, burn.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: Bye.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Bye.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Oh, shit. What was I going to say?
