- 0:00Salaam Alaikum, welcome back to the Aftermath, the podcast.
- 0:03Of course, we are now entering the days of Muharram, the days
- 0:07of course, where we commemorate the demise, the martyrdom, the
- 0:10tragedy of the killing of Imam Hussein.
- 0:13Salahat Allahi was Salaam Ali. And of course, it goes without
- 0:16saying that we firstly extend our condolences to none other
- 0:19than Imam and Mehdi Ajallah, to Allah, Father Joe Sharif and of
- 0:23course all to you all as well at home.
- 0:25If you're here for the first time, welcome to After Maghrib,
- 0:29hit that subscribe button. We do weekly conversations on
- 0:32Islam, on community and how to uplift ourselves.
- 0:35And of course, entering the Muharram season, the next few
- 0:37podcasts will be focusing on everything to do with Karbala
- 0:41before, during and after. And ways in which we can apply
- 0:44what we learn in that epic to our own lives in our day-to-day
- 0:49interactions. Today, inshallah, we're going to
- 0:52start on that note. So we're going to have a
- 0:53fantastic conversation where we look at the values of Imam
- 0:56Hussein and the ways in which we can not only apply it to
- 0:59ourselves, but also introduce it to people around us.
- 1:02So we have two very special guests, 2 amazing friends of
- 1:06mine, brothers of mine, no pun intended.
- 1:09But before I introduce these two brothers, my other brother said
- 1:13Ali Ali Ali. How are you keeping?
- 1:27Hamdullah well, I'm just taking in the reality that the month.
- 1:30Of the season here is upon us. So there's a lot of I think
- 1:34reflection for me to do during this month as well as you know,
- 1:37in addition to the spiritual Inshallah growth that happens
- 1:41during this month on top of the hazard that we do, the
- 1:43remembrance, the Majalis that we attend.
- 1:45And I and I think personally similar to last year in the
- 1:47previous years here on the podcast, I want, I want to know
- 1:51what theme do we have for this year?
- 1:53Yeah, you mentioned just now in the intro, we're going to
- 1:56discuss Karbala before, during and after.
- 1:58Last year was the top heed of Imam and Hussain.
- 2:01So I think this is going to be a journey for everyone and Shallow
- 2:03would benefit. Insha Allah, of course we know
- 2:06the hadith of Salah Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam where
- 2:10he says and I translate, I translate.
- 2:13The killing of Hussain lights a fire that never subsides in the
- 2:17lovers of him. And so inshallah on that note,
- 2:19we can enter the season with that love.
- 2:21You know, we can try and keep that fire burning and inshallah
- 2:25try our best to do justice. I said bro and and be able to
- 2:30call ourselves Hosseini with pride and also with Macnifer as
- 2:33to what that means. Because there's one thing going
- 2:35out and saying we're Hosseini, but embodying that and
- 2:37personifying that is a whole different thing.
- 2:39So hopefully we're going to be able to do that.
- 2:41Today I'm introducing 2 amazing guests.
- 2:43One of them for those at home or for those listening, looks and
- 2:48sounds like me. OK.
- 2:50And one of them looks and sounds like.
- 2:52So I'm joking. So to my left, my own blood
- 2:58brother, my Big Brother Ali Salaam Alaikum Salaam Ahad.
- 3:01How are you? I'm good.
- 3:02I've never had an introduction like that.
- 3:04I've never had someone say the guy looks like me and talks like
- 3:06me. Thank you for having me on.
- 3:07Thank you for coming bro. Salaam.
- 3:10Salaam. And so Ali's left you.
- 3:12Do sound the same though I'm thinking about really.
- 3:14Should we swap seats? Gosh.
- 3:16And Ali's left, Montezo right? So what they call Meiko.
- 3:18Saddam, thanks for having me. On thanks for coming on and for
- 3:21those who don't know these two brothers, they are members, key
- 3:27members of the Hood Hussain Foundation and all of us at
- 3:32home, I'm sure know who's hussein.org.
- 3:34And if you don't, then please pause the podcast right now and
- 3:37go to whosthesame.org because you will not understand the
- 3:40context of this conversation without looking at who's the
- 3:43same or forward slash, donate, forward slash, yes, and listen.
- 3:47And don't forget aftermathof.com/donate.
- 3:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. But listen, we're entering say,
- 3:55the season of of Azhar, the season of mourning.
- 3:58These next 10/11/12 nights are going to be nights of grief for
- 4:02us. No tragedy like Imam Hussein's
- 4:05tragedy. Now we say every year that this
- 4:08is the greatest tragedy that has ever happened on the face of the
- 4:11earth, not because of how many people died, not because of when
- 4:14it happened, but rather who was killed and the way in which he
- 4:16and his family and companions were martyred on the plains of
- 4:19Karbala. What took place before the
- 4:21betrayal that took place before, during and even after the Battle
- 4:25of Karbala? The 50 years since the death of
- 4:27the Holy Prophet Muhammad leading up to the Battle of
- 4:30Karbala and what took place on those planes kind of sets a
- 4:33tone, I think, for us when we enter this month to realise that
- 4:37the tragedy goes beyond the 10th of Muharram.
- 4:39What do you reckon? It does, it definitely does.
- 4:41And even even I think not just beyond the 10th of Muharram,
- 4:44even like during the 10th of Muharram, I think we need to
- 4:47have reminders. Like for me, I want to
- 4:49understand, OK, why was Imam and Hussein presence in Karbala?
- 4:53Why did it happen on the 10th of Muharram?
- 4:55What led to this, you know, huge massacre that I think until
- 5:01today there's no other massacre. You can compare that people
- 5:04until today, hundreds and hundreds of millions will still
- 5:07cry. You mentioned the name of about
- 5:08Abdullah. It's impossible not to shed
- 5:11tears. You know, Charlotte, these tears
- 5:13act as intercession for us on the day of a judgement.
- 5:15So you're right, there is more, there is more to take on this.
- 5:17What? Ready?
- 5:18What I think is what a key question we get asked as Shia
- 5:22and as lovers of Imam Hussein is why do you guys do what you do?
- 5:27OK, so we go to work, of course, we continue our lives during
- 5:31these ten nights. We wear black, we go out for
- 5:35majalis at night. We go to majalis in people's
- 5:37homes, we post on social media. And a lot of the time we get
- 5:42asked by those who don't understand why we do what we do,
- 5:47why we're doing this. So to maybe kick off what, what
- 5:53does this season mean to you? I know it means a lot to you
- 5:55personally. What's your thought process when
- 5:57trying to summarize why this is a cause which you care about so
- 6:01much? Yeah, so I mean, I think in a
- 6:05day we're all humans. And that means that we all, we
- 6:09all love a hero. We all need a guide in life.
- 6:13We all want to see and connect with something that has happened
- 6:16which can motivate and inspire us to become better people, to
- 6:21get the best out of ourselves. And we know there's that saying
- 6:25that Imam Hussein, that ship is the fastest and widest.
- 6:29And there's a reason there must be more wisdom than I than I can
- 6:33put my finger on. But it's there because it is the
- 6:36best way to be able to get us to the end goal, The end goal.
- 6:41It's tall heed. It's getting closer to God.
- 6:44It's not just about crying for Imam Hussein.
- 6:46And of course, I know we all go into this month and we think
- 6:49about what happened to Imam Hussein.
- 6:53I think we all understand as well that Imam Hussein doesn't,
- 6:56didn't and doesn't want us to just cry about what happened.
- 6:59He has no qualms about what happened to him.
- 7:02He is happy as it says at the end of Surat al Faja, which is
- 7:07known as Surat al Hussein, that he is pleased with God and God
- 7:12is pleased with him. So it's not about going into the
- 7:14season and just thinking about just what what's what's happened
- 7:17and what has happened. It's about looking at how this
- 7:20is a springboard for something even greater.
- 7:22Imam Hussein only did this for God.
- 7:23He didn't do it for any other reason, for any other purpose.
- 7:26It was for the purest of intentions.
- 7:30So for me, it's always about going into this season and
- 7:33thinking what's happening in my life at the moment, What do I
- 7:37need to learn from Imam Hussein? And it's a unit.
- 7:40The Day of Usher is just a university of lessons every
- 7:43single year. It's amazing how millions, you
- 7:47know, they go to Majalis, you learn something new, it'll be
- 7:51somehow newly applicable to whatever's struggle is going on
- 7:54with you at that point in life, which in itself is just
- 7:57miraculous. But I think every time it's got
- 8:00to be, how is this going to springboard me to getting closer
- 8:02to God and refining my own? I don't really.
- 8:06What do you think? I mean, if you think about it,
- 8:09Karbala shouldn't make no sense because tragedies happen every
- 8:13day. We just need to look on BBC
- 8:15News, CNN right now. I guarantee top three headlines
- 8:19there'll be someone would have died, someone would have
- 8:22starved, someone have been bombed.
- 8:23We all think about the same place right now, right?
- 8:25We've all seen videos in the last few months of girls
- 8:29working, walking through flames, people carrying bags, their
- 8:32children dead, parts of their children in in carrier bags.
- 8:37Tragedies have happened in history, throughout history, and
- 8:41unfortunately will continue to happen as long as the human race
- 8:43walks this earth, really until the end.
- 8:47So what makes Karbala different? There is there's got to be
- 8:50something that makes it different.
- 8:50There is something that makes it different.
- 8:52There is a higher realm, a higher reality of Karbala that
- 8:56exists on not a a merely material sense.
- 9:02It's a meta level of reality of Karbala that talks to our souls
- 9:07in which any single person who's experiencing any kind of
- 9:10challenge, they're feeling overwhelmed, they're feeling
- 9:14encumbered by something and see something in Karbala.
- 9:17I remember what I saw in Karbala when I was 11 years old, and
- 9:20when I heard the story of Bibi Sakina, I cried because Ahmed
- 9:23Yumi have a young sister who at the time was a very young girl,
- 9:27and I thought of her. And now I'm a father and I think
- 9:30of my children, and that's at a very human level.
- 9:32But then I think to myself, do you know what?
- 9:34What is it about this that makes it so much more powerful than
- 9:36that? Let's say in the years 365 days,
- 9:39we spent more than 10% of our year mourning every year.
- 9:42It's extraordinary, it doesn't make any sense, but it does make
- 9:45sense. And because it's now part of our
- 9:47DNA. And what I'm saying is our
- 9:49reminder to that whatever we're going through, there's, we can
- 9:53achieve more, we can do it, we can overcome, we can succeed.
- 9:56We can fight towards Allah, we can strive towards towards Allah
- 10:00and we can sacrifice because ultimately the man we're looking
- 10:03at was able to do it. I have spent my life, I'm not
- 10:08the greatest student of history or politics or the international
- 10:11international relations. I've spent my life as an amateur
- 10:15student of the world trying to make sense of liberal democracy,
- 10:19of international human rights, of the judicial systems.
- 10:24They're so flawed. Winston Churchill himself said,
- 10:27to paraphrase him, democracy is rubbish.
- 10:29It's the best we've got. It's absolutely terrible.
- 10:31There are people out there in the world for whom we have
- 10:33arrest warrants for committing mass murder and we can't enforce
- 10:36them because certain governments don't want to do.
- 10:38There's got to be a better order out then, and the Husseini way
- 10:42is the pinnacle of what humanity can achieve as far as I'm
- 10:45concerned. So in terms of the relevance of
- 10:47what I'm saying, it's the higher calling for every single member
- 10:50of humanity that we keep going back to, I said.
- 10:53Very, very beautifully said. And you know, you mentioned you
- 10:56had a younger sister at the time when you were relating to the
- 10:58story of BBC Cicina. And thank you for mentioning
- 11:01that because it bring me memories.
- 11:03When I first took my daughter to my to Majalis.
- 11:07I remember hearing from the pulpit, the speaker on on the
- 11:10member and he was narrating the tragedy.
- 11:12And I was like, I can just imagine for a moment, imagine
- 11:15this was Hanian, for example. And that really shredded my
- 11:18heart and ripped into pieces. I imagined, OK, what about the
- 11:21heart of Hussein, about the heart of Zainab?
- 11:23What did they go through? And it's a reflection as well.
- 11:26Like so many things we can learn, not just social justice.
- 11:29In addition to that is that no matter what we go through, no
- 11:31matter what tragedies we face, there is a bigger cause and
- 11:35there is a bigger tragedy. And that's about Abdullah Al
- 11:37Hussein, someone who changed the course of history, right?
- 11:39Another thing I want to add, like you mentioned, you know,
- 11:42you can go to the workplace. People say why do you wear black
- 11:44and everything. Maybe I can answer it from
- 11:47Hussein Ishii perspective. And I and I want to learn more
- 11:50from you guys on how to answer people in the workplace, how to
- 11:53answer people in educational settings.
- 11:55For me, it's like if someone asks me, OK, why you wearing
- 11:57black or why are you crying? Why do you go to Majalis?
- 12:01And I'll be like, look for me, I know that building a connection
- 12:04with the Imam is something great in the eyes of Allah.
- 12:07Why I can go back and say Rasul Allah said Ahab Allah and Haba
- 12:11Hussain, Hussain and mini Anna and Hussain.
- 12:14So unlike a basic level, my understanding is if I want God
- 12:18to love me, if I want the mercy of Allah, if I want Allah to
- 12:21have my back, Allah azzawajal because my backbone I need to
- 12:25love the ehlid Bates. But that's like on something, a
- 12:28conversation I can have with a fellow Muslim.
- 12:30Should a fellow. Share a faith and I know it's
- 12:32difficult because sometimes I get asked and I find it very
- 12:35hard to explain to someone who doesn't know what sacrifices, to
- 12:39someone who doesn't know what kidma is, or to someone who
- 12:42doesn't know. Why would you cry continuously
- 12:441400 years later? How would you explain it to
- 12:47someone, let's say in the West, that you meet in the workplace?
- 12:52Randomly. Now he sees you.
- 12:53OK, now you're wearing black. Randomly now he sees you.
- 12:57Your face is no longer joyous or sporting grief.
- 13:00He's going to ask, is everything OK?
- 13:02Is everything all right at home? So they may, but they don't know
- 13:04the real story. I cannot add to that as well
- 13:06because, because this is the reason why guys, for those who
- 13:10are listening of why we wanted to have this segment of this
- 13:14conversation on this day entering the season is because
- 13:17you're going to you're going to experience this and we will
- 13:20experience it to a degree. So understanding, is there a, a
- 13:24best way of introducing Imam Hussein's message to people and
- 13:27how do you do that? So like, and we are going to a
- 13:31Western audience, yeah, as to a non Shiite, but let's forget
- 13:35other Muslims for now, because I think that's the whole different
- 13:37dynamic. Let's talk about non-Muslims and
- 13:40how we approach it now, because there's things that come into my
- 13:43mind and we're gonna do role plays.
- 13:45OK, So I'm gonna do an elevator pitch with you guys, you know,
- 13:49and I think that's maybe a nice place to start.
- 13:52And I'm gonna put you on the spot.
- 13:53Money. I'm gonna start with you.
- 13:54OK. So yeah, sorry bro, but.
- 13:56Thank you. Thank you for starting with.
- 13:58It No. But listen, you are in an
- 14:00elevator, OK? You walk in, you're wearing
- 14:02black to Star show. You've got your scarf on and
- 14:04everything someone says to you. I like your outfit.
- 14:08Why are you wearing that? What do you say?
- 14:11You've got your stopwatch ready, Empire State Building.
- 14:16I think it's always got to start with something from the heart
- 14:19because if it's something that's scripted, fake, it just doesn't
- 14:23come off as authentic. And they're just thinking this
- 14:26guy's got a well prepared answer, right?
- 14:28It's got to start with, listen, you know, something along the
- 14:32lines of my teacher, my guide, the biggest inspiration in my
- 14:37life, the one that helps me through tough times, passed away
- 14:42on this day. And it's a day where I feel
- 14:45heartbroken every single year. And that's why we dress like
- 14:48this. Because I'm sure if it was your
- 14:50family member or someone that meant as much as a man called
- 14:53Hussein Ibn Ali does to me, you would do the same.
- 14:57You would be broken and you would be dressing in dark
- 15:00colours or whatever signifies grief to you.
- 15:05And it's about making sure that they understand what he means to
- 15:09you, making sure that you've said the name.
- 15:12I think, you know, I'm taking a look.
- 15:14I'm I'm really imagining this elevator, by the way, with, you
- 15:16know, like a couple of like non-muslim people in there.
- 15:19And I'm thinking you start saying Imam Hussein Ali Salaam.
- 15:22They haven't got a clue, have not got a clue what you've just
- 15:24said. If you say Hussein them near
- 15:26Ali, they probably say that sounds like a person's name.
- 15:30Say Hussein by itself on a level people have said you, you're
- 15:34talking about Saddam Hussein stuff for a lot, but you have to
- 15:36clarify. It's small things like this that
- 15:39just helps that person understand a little bit more.
- 15:42And then maybe saying to them something along the lines of who
- 15:45do you turn to when you know when times are hard for you?
- 15:48And they might say, I remember my mum or I remember my school
- 15:52teacher or I remember person X. And suddenly you both have got
- 15:57something that you can bond with and say, OK, you went through
- 16:00this. And they'll probably say,
- 16:01listen, everyone's got a mum. Everyone's had a school teacher.
- 16:04But everyone who's not Muslim has not got or may not have had
- 16:09Hussein. And that's the moment where
- 16:12you've got to be able to say to them, listen, let me tell you
- 16:13about this man. And I'm telling you when you,
- 16:17you know, I'm sure we all have done this.
- 16:19We've we've spoken to people comes from the heart and it
- 16:22just, and you see that, you see their demeanor change as well.
- 16:26You know, even the most kind of hard person or the maybe the
- 16:30most Islamophobic, but it changes and they may not want to
- 16:34kind of like let that be known, but you can see it changes.
- 16:37So if it comes from the heart, it will reach the heart
- 16:40Inshallah. And at least that way you've let
- 16:43them known about this person. The rest of it, you know, we
- 16:46always say who is the same? The rest of it is that's God's
- 16:49job. Our job is not here to try and
- 16:51get people to change faith and things like that.
- 16:54That's God's job. Ours is most definitely as an
- 16:57organization is most certainly to let the 7 billion odd
- 17:01non-Muslims out there know about this man.
- 17:04So I I guess that's also, yeah, why, why?
- 17:07Who's the saying.org has such an important role to play?
- 17:10Because when you have that initial conversation, it's it's
- 17:13a long history to talk about the story of the Allah Bait Alayhi
- 17:17Musalaam. And obviously the website plays
- 17:19a big role in further research and redirecting people to to a
- 17:23place where they can find more and research more.
- 17:25And you've got, you've got, you know, stuff there, you've got,
- 17:30you know, historical stuff for people who are interested.
- 17:32Obviously you go into the social work, obviously who's the same
- 17:34for those who don't know, have what, over 50 odd teams around
- 17:38the world, from Hong Kong to Mehdi in Colombia and everywhere
- 17:42else. I know my staff who's.
- 17:44The team before, yeah. Yeah, who's the saying and
- 17:47saying? Ali knows this year has been has
- 17:50my life would look completely different And Ali knows that and
- 17:53money knows that, but it's had a profound impact on me.
- 17:56And I truly think that comes down to whatever you give to the
- 18:00Imam, Allah rewards in the. Terms.
- 18:01You make a good point there, which is about some monster gave
- 18:04a very like personal humanizing answer, which is associating and
- 18:09what I'm saying as like a like a like a human being, right?
- 18:13Like a real human who's in his life.
- 18:16The alternative. What do I say the alternative or
- 18:18the other maybe angle or the perspective is talk about the
- 18:22values. Yeah.
- 18:24So I I wouldn't do this in an elevator, but just like some
- 18:26context for everyone in the world that I talk about the
- 18:28historical context. I have been talking about a lot
- 18:30recently and I've been thinking about this.
- 18:32So just in the last few weeks, the European Space Agency and
- 18:35NASA spent an sent an orbiter, like a space shuttle close to
- 18:39the sun to get the best pictures we've ever got of the sun,
- 18:41right? We're developing microchips,
- 18:43processing data. There's theories in like
- 18:46computer science that we process data every 10 years.
- 18:49We double the speed of our learning.
- 18:50All this kind of stuff, all that human progress is happening at
- 18:53extraordinary speeds. One in four people go to bed
- 18:57hungry every night. One in 11, sorry, one in four
- 19:01people don't have access to clean water and one in 11 people
- 19:04go to bed hungry every night. So despite our extraordinary
- 19:08mind blowing imperceivable humanity advances as a as a
- 19:13civilization, right? We're getting further and faster
- 19:16every single day, whether it's AI or digital change or trend
- 19:20technology, whatever it is we are the history of humanity is
- 19:23that we're very, very good at subjugating or allowing the
- 19:26subjugation or the eradication of the basic individual rights,
- 19:32liberties and amenities of the mass and the poorest of us.
- 19:38That's not a left field liberal. That's.
- 19:41Just a factual truth. We are every single one of us
- 19:44has a foreign deficit. These things are who minds these
- 19:49things like, I mean, it's it's part of our like our fundamental
- 19:52footprint is that we subjugate others for our own benefit and
- 19:55our own creed and a different the only world view I found.
- 20:01The only one not monarchist, not conservative, not liberal, not
- 20:06this, not that, nothing, not nationalist, nothing.
- 20:09The only world view that I found that's beyond reproach to which
- 20:13we should harken. The only one that I've seen, not
- 20:15a single blemish in which someone has been able to live a
- 20:18life of perfection with is this one.
- 20:20Because this is the guy who died thirsty, who gave water to the
- 20:22people who made him thirsty. I mean, this is not like it's
- 20:26not a book smart level of humanity.
- 20:29This is like literally, I will give you access to a river when
- 20:33I know you're going to make me die of thirst and you're going
- 20:35to make my kids die first and you're going to obliterate
- 20:38everyone I love. Like there's got to be something
- 20:41much greater, much greater. You know, you look at the other
- 20:45greats that people talk about and I'm not going to name them
- 20:47all, but we know the kind of people, the great heroes, the
- 20:50lionize people of social justice, They all have a blemish
- 20:52of some sort, family life, indiscretion, something this man
- 20:58Hussein and the people around him have got something that sets
- 21:03them apart. And if that worldview, if we can
- 21:06even take a scintilla of it and take it into our world, if we
- 21:10had a lot more Husseinis in this world, one in four, one in
- 21:12level, not be thirsty and hungry.
- 21:14That's my perspective. Because that man didn't let
- 21:17other people go thirsty even when they were his enemies.
- 21:18He didn't let them go thirsty. And so I don't think, I'm sorry,
- 21:22I don't think democracy, I don't think the neoliberal order.
- 21:25These are not answers. Okay.
- 21:29Cool Hussein. Yeah.
- 21:30So that's not elevated pitch. No, you mentioned a very nice
- 21:32point. If there was more hosseinis,
- 21:34there will be less people, for example, dying thirsty, going to
- 21:37sleep hungry. That means the world is missing
- 21:39Hosseini values. And this is very nice.
- 21:42I think what what one organization like yours does,
- 21:44who is for saying is like, you try to let the world know, as
- 21:48you said, we're not trying to convert you, we're not trying to
- 21:50change you, but we're making you aware of who this great man is,
- 21:54right? And I think, I think that's
- 21:55something so special. It's relevant today.
- 21:57It's not just a historical character.
- 21:58No, I'll be honest. Yeah, I was.
- 21:59But. You bring up Hussein alive.
- 22:01I I I've been at a few Gaza protests and I told to say this
- 22:08yeah, I, I've I was helping some friends out on on a stool.
- 22:13They had to talk to people about mum and Mehdi.
- 22:16I think that's very difficult because you're talking about a
- 22:20futuristic figure, a figure from the future.
- 22:23Well, obviously it's not is in the present.
- 22:24You know what I mean Somebody who will return to will to
- 22:27non-Muslims and you're talking about yeah shared Abrahamic all
- 22:30Abrahamic faiths have different things of him and it's difficult
- 22:35because you're talking about something that might happen.
- 22:37But the the value based proposition of you know the
- 22:41moral deficit society. Yeah yeah.
- 22:43What you know you talk about in the context of Gaza or any other
- 22:47genocide or any other atrocity. There is a lack of humanity in
- 22:52all regards and people then just tend to agree with you.
- 22:56They, they agree with you because they know that there's,
- 22:57there's a lack of goodness and that thing of a Muhammad Hussein
- 23:00Salam Allah Ali being the like epitomization and the of all
- 23:05things good, you know, that's goodly or godly.
- 23:09Whatever you want to say. Yeah, of course.
- 23:11Do you think our community. Does enough at the moment to let
- 23:15people know him. I always think to myself, I've,
- 23:18I've been on a, a real rant at the moment with the team and I'm
- 23:22like, we're so selfish as a as a as a mud hub, we're just
- 23:28incredibly selfish. I don't think any of us can say
- 23:31what have we done? OK, he's in your lineage, you're
- 23:35in his lineage, but what have we done to deserve this greatest
- 23:39gift, right? We'd all say that he is probably
- 23:42one of the top gifts that we've been blessed with from God.
- 23:45What did we do to deserve it, right?
- 23:48Nothing. But the best gifts in life are
- 23:52the ones that you share with others.
- 23:55I don't think we. Do I thought we go 10 days
- 23:58majalis? We don't let people know.
- 24:01People see us turning up in droves to centres in black.
- 24:05Wouldn't they be wondering? What?
- 24:07What are these not doing every year?
- 24:09Do we do anything when we have Majalis at home and we've got
- 24:12cars parked all over awfully, probably in driveways?
- 24:16Do we explain to our neighbors what's going on and do people?
- 24:18Then say well have we got to the point as a as a community 2% of
- 24:22the world's population are shitty up today's do people say
- 24:25these guys are have Hussein and and that what's makes that's
- 24:29what makes them better. They should be saying that they
- 24:31should. You know what saying?
- 24:32Makes them the best. There's a lot.
- 24:34Of this because marvel about Islam says introduce our values
- 24:37to people and we'll do the rest mum Salah Kali Islam says being
- 24:40a dormant for us and do not represent the Sunnah in an ugly
- 24:44fashion. I'm also paraphrasing, there's a
- 24:46lot of a hadith which discussed this.
- 24:49And of course in Azarat, how many of us Yarat, we hear about
- 24:52the, the, the irrigation of Imam Hussein's message.
- 24:56And then of course, when you get into the Al Qaidi discussion,
- 24:58that's a whole different thing. But from a purely like social
- 25:02historical humanitarian level, it makes sense.
- 25:05And I think we can all agree that I want to ask you a few
- 25:07questions, OK. And specifically in terms of
- 25:10rebuttals, right? So people will give rebuttals.
- 25:13So I'm going to throw 3 or 4 at you and I want you to come up
- 25:16with a response. And of course it doesn't have to
- 25:18be the right response, but it's your response.
- 25:20OK. As a caveat, firstly, you
- 25:22mentioned Hussein Ibn Ali and not Imam Hussein Ali Salaam.
- 25:25I know people around the world react differently to that.
- 25:28When you talk about the Holy Prophet Muhammad due to a
- 25:31non-muslim, do you say Prophet Muhammad or do you say Muhammad
- 25:35Ibn Abdullah for example? And the reason why I say that is
- 25:39because the you can obviously apply the same principle.
- 25:42My personal answer would be that the term prophet is obviously an
- 25:46anglicized word. And secondly, he's known in the
- 25:49Western world as Prophet Muhammad.
- 25:51But what's your response, especially to to people in our
- 25:54own community, as to why you think that's the best way to
- 25:57introduce a man person's name? Yeah.
- 26:00So first of all, regarding Prophet Muhammad solar, I said
- 26:03them first of all, there is obviously an IA in the Quran
- 26:06where it talks about sending it. That's the if you want to call
- 26:09it the Sunnah of God to send praise on on him.
- 26:13So there is already a a grand kind of elevation for him.
- 26:18There is obviously no one like him in that's lived on this
- 26:24earth. And when it comes to Imam
- 26:26Hussein, it's not really about dropping the title age because
- 26:30it's not not something that is important.
- 26:32It's first of all something that people would not understand.
- 26:37Prophet is also an English word, so we wouldn't say Rasul.
- 26:41The last of course, right, you'd say prophet.
- 26:44You've already translated it Imam.
- 26:47How would you translate the leader Hussain?
- 26:51Bit of a weird way to say it. First of all.
- 26:54The other thing is also we've made sure that we've, you know,
- 26:56ticked boxes. We've made sure that we've sat
- 26:58with scholars and asked them, listen, when we're doing it for
- 27:00this purpose of let's be honest, it's soft dawa, soft tabliq for
- 27:05that purpose, you know, unanimously the scholars have
- 27:08told us it's not a problem. You don't have to refer to him
- 27:11as imam. You don't have to say Ali Salaam
- 27:14after his name because if you're trying to get this over to a non
- 27:18Islamic, you know Western English speaking has to be.
- 27:22Digestible. It's got to be something else
- 27:23that makes. Sense to them.
- 27:26I mean, there's a huge difference between not a huge
- 27:29difference. First of all, number one, I want
- 27:30to emphasize what one has just said.
- 27:32Huge respect. We try to pay towards what the
- 27:36learned people in our community say #1 and be hugely respectful
- 27:40towards the figures we're talking about.
- 27:41We don't treat this figure lightly or these this this group
- 27:44of people lightly, always leading with respect.
- 27:47But context is king where the way you talk to someone in
- 27:50London is different to the way you talk to someone in Karachi.
- 27:53And you know, if someone is from a society that's very Islamic or
- 27:58has course, yeah, they will understand if you're going to
- 28:00say imam, many of these or even if you're many.
- 28:02People don't think about me. Yeah, yeah, they, they.
- 28:04May call him an imam just on that by a lot.
- 28:06So in in the subcontinent, in India and Pakistan, we, we
- 28:11encourage our teams call him as Imam Hussain because that's how
- 28:14he is. I'll say even in the UK, if
- 28:17you're speaking to a Sunni, yeah, you.
- 28:18You say imam, of course, Absolutely.
- 28:20So there's a. Big difference between Prophet
- 28:22and Imam, first of all, and but we're very and once people got
- 28:26over this shot because there's a huge shock factor at the
- 28:28beginning, I remember. But once, people.
- 28:30I don't think we hear this very much anymore, do we?
- 28:32No, very rarely now, yeah. Yeah.
- 28:33Because people have come to terms with.
- 28:35There's a respect. And also to respect the man is
- 28:37to talk about him in a way that people understand.
- 28:39Which is like you said, the Genesis organization is
- 28:41introducing us. You can't introduce someone who
- 28:43you know, aeronautics engineer starts talking about something
- 28:46very technical to someone who's a layperson.
- 28:48They're not gonna understand we've talked about them simply
- 28:50then it's due respect to his might be honest about.
- 28:52Something many, many years, when I first came across the
- 28:55organization, who's Hussein, I did find it disrespectful,
- 28:59Number one, I think because I'm Shiite and we've always been
- 29:03used to hearing Imam Al Hussein, Alayhi Salaam.
- 29:06So when I used to see that on, for example, marketing material
- 29:09and posters and things like that, I'm like, OK, where's the
- 29:11imam? You're a Shia organization,
- 29:13where's the Alayhi Salaam? And I think it took years, I
- 29:16think for me to process, but that this is Tablif, not to us,
- 29:19It's not a Shia. Organization.
- 29:20I would counsel that, bro, it's an organization honestly, and
- 29:23I'm going to gain. We've trained Ahmed well.
- 29:25Yeah, yeah, I. Don't think it is, genuinely
- 29:27speaking. It's not even Trey Rose.
- 29:29Are you confusing? Me.
- 29:30No, no, listen. To this bro.
- 29:32The. Organization founded, started
- 29:35run exists. Shia OK Shia belief system, Shia
- 29:38theology, share everything by the Shia Imam Hussein.
- 29:42The way you talk about him is the way Shia would speak about
- 29:43him, not the way anyone else would speak about him.
- 29:45However, the whole point of the organization is to make Imam
- 29:48Hussein's message global. When Imam and Mahdi returns, do
- 29:52I need to say it? Three out of there you go.
- 29:56Three out of the five statements that he says between the rocket
- 29:59and the macam about saying my grandfather was the one who died
- 30:03at chant this, all of that stuff is, you know, when you're doing.
- 30:05Messaging in any organization, in any any context, it's by who
- 30:09and for who, By Shia, by lovers of Abdullah, for Universal.
- 30:15Sorry. In the organization, people
- 30:16laugh. I talk about John and Lucy.
- 30:18John and Lucy are the people who listen to this.
- 30:20If John and Lucy don't know what we're talking about because
- 30:22we're not talking about the way they understand, Yeah, don't
- 30:24bother talking. Got to talk about the way people
- 30:26understand. And that's part of our, our even
- 30:29if you look at Rasulullah, the way he talked at the beginning
- 30:30of his mission, very different, the way he talks to the end.
- 30:34There's a journey that people go on and eventually when people.
- 30:36Get adaptation to cultural the differences by the way, the
- 30:40disparities between but without. Compromising on core values,
- 30:43tenets, and of course, of course not going beyond the the lines
- 30:48of fake. That's something that we don't
- 30:50ever compromise on. But the scholars that we speak
- 30:53to also understand that, yes, there are certain areas where
- 30:57it's not a hard and fast rule. So and that I appreciate the
- 31:01fact that you're being honest and you're just saying that,
- 31:03look, it was a bit difficult as a as a she at the beginning to
- 31:06really kind of like get with this.
- 31:08But that's the bit where I come back to look, as long as you're
- 31:11not transgressing Fick, let's not be selfish.
- 31:13Don't keep him as Imam Al Hussein to John and Lucy,
- 31:17because they're not going to understand it and why we're
- 31:19going to deprive them of this gift.
- 31:20And people are smart, you know? Like when I when I have the
- 31:22opportunity to to go to our events and part of our events
- 31:26is, you know, if you're feeding people on the street of London,
- 31:28you've got a stall, right. People walk past and they'll
- 31:31talk to you. What's this?
- 31:32What's this? And people understand Hussein is
- 31:34not a normal name for them. They understand it's and they
- 31:38often will ask, is he a religious figure?
- 31:40That's the question you asked a lot.
- 31:41Or was he a leader or something like that?
- 31:44Straight away? He was the grandson.
- 31:45The Prophet Muhammad is usually the first sentence I say, OK, so
- 31:48there's no like there was an issue.
- 31:50Like, do we tiptoe around it? No, own up to it.
- 31:52Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:52It's from that, that lineage that these divine godly morals
- 31:58emerge. But that doesn't mean it's
- 32:00limited to people who pray in this direction, who are this
- 32:03colour, who have these names. No, this is a universal figure.
- 32:06Rahmatullah Al Amin is not Rama for Shias, Rama for everyone.
- 32:10And this is the grandson of that man.
- 32:12And in the same way, he is a blessing upon all of creation.
- 32:16And that's why let me ask you a question.
- 32:19If you don't mind, OK, do you think because obviously we, we
- 32:23obviously try our level and humble best to, to, to try and
- 32:28talk about the, the, the story of Muhammad Hussein, the lessons
- 32:32from Muhammad Hussein. Obviously our target audience is
- 32:35Muslim, specifically Shia. So it's a different mission.
- 32:38Our goal, one of our many goals is to unite the Shia across the
- 32:41world, regardless of ideal ideological backgrounds and
- 32:45whatnot, demographics. Our goal is to unite people
- 32:47under the banner of, of Imama and banner of Daahid and
- 32:50obviously the Quran as well. Now, when we talk about Imam
- 32:55Hussein, we do it very differently, right?
- 32:58But when we talk about Man Hussain to the wider audience,
- 33:04do you think there's a place for comparison with other social
- 33:10justice movements? So for example, Black Lives
- 33:13Matter or for example, Palestine and what's happening there or
- 33:19many others which I'm not even going to mention.
- 33:21Some of which may be morally compromising or filky, like in
- 33:26terms of Jews prudentially compromising.
- 33:28For example, someone may turn around and say, and we've seen a
- 33:32growing trend saying, why do you not talk about social justice
- 33:37issues like the LGBTQ movement, right?
- 33:41Or for example, with Black Lives Matter, there's elements of
- 33:46controversy surrounding the movement.
- 33:48So do you think it's right or wrong to include discussions on
- 33:53other social justice movements when talking about Mom percent
- 33:55or is the exclusive from that? I don't think if I can answer as
- 33:59is it right or wrong? I think as a Shiite, as a Shia
- 34:04Muslim, for me it's if I want to, for example, compare social
- 34:08justice figures, or if I want to compare certain things that we
- 34:12see happening around the world. This let's relate to today.
- 34:15For example, something being unrelated to what's happening in
- 34:17Raza, for example, the certain elements where I can say, OK,
- 34:20for example, there's like a Hosseini vibe, a Hosseini
- 34:24inspiration. Why not by all means, and I and
- 34:27I and I encourage that. But I think the moment, like you
- 34:30mentioned, the examples of LGBTQ and things like this, these are
- 34:33things Imam Hussein is not going to stand for.
- 34:34Of course, these are things that are so Allah is not going to
- 34:36encourage us to go support and back for.
- 34:39So I, I think that we have to like find the balance, OK, If I
- 34:42want to stand for something and support something and use Imam
- 34:45Hussein's name to compare social injustices around the world, I
- 34:50think you have to think twice. But I would say something if I
- 34:54can't add to this question is that I've, I've, I've always
- 34:58wondered like, why does, who is Hossein use, for example, Randy
- 35:02alone? Why do, why does the name Martin
- 35:06Luther King come out very, very often?
- 35:09And I have conversations with friends and I share this with
- 35:11you now. And they say this is wrong.
- 35:13They say we can never compare Hossein to these sort of
- 35:16figures. You wait to compare.
- 35:18Yeah, and I and I say. No problem.
- 35:20But no one's comparing, right? There is no comparison saying
- 35:23they are the Hussein. They are, for example, Malcolm
- 35:27X. Greta, whoever else there was,
- 35:29there was this. Debate, I was having this weeks
- 35:32ago, weeks ago. It was aha.
- 35:38So this was the discussion that people are saying organisations
- 35:43like who is Hussein, not just your exclusive.
- 35:45There are others down in this field, right?
- 35:49They feel in a way lots of members in the Shia community,
- 35:52they feel such organisations are trying to replace Majalis, are
- 35:58trying to replace Aza, are trying to replace XYZ.
- 36:02My, my, my. Counter to that was this is not
- 36:06a replacement. This is in addition correct.
- 36:09Yeah. They're not telling you no.
- 36:10Don't go beat your chest, fob Artilla.
- 36:12They're not going telling you no, come, let's go on a March.
- 36:16Let's go make a stall in, I don't know, central London and
- 36:18don't go to mention this. They're not saying that.
- 36:21They're not even reaching out to you.
- 36:22This is something they do in addition.
- 36:24So how it just goes back? To this idea of don't be
- 36:27selfish, yeah, yeah. I'm gonna say why do we have to
- 36:30keep him in those four walls of the Hussein yard or the
- 36:34massaged? Why do we keep him only there?
- 36:36And why for only us? And why for only our majalis,
- 36:39which we've had for decades, you know that shocker that we've
- 36:44we've had majalis. You have 10 nights.
- 36:47Is it not possible that in addition to those ten nights or
- 36:51outside of those ten nights, can't you share him with other
- 36:56people who maybe through you God can gift Imam Hussein to these
- 37:01people? Like I said to you.
- 37:02Before, we didn't do anything to deserve him, right?
- 37:05So why can't we share him at the end of the day?
- 37:10This this. Idea of why do we use other?
- 37:15Again, these people are not going to understand.
- 37:18If you say to them Imam was saying is the most amazing thing
- 37:21Imam was saying is your savior. You're going to say unlike an
- 37:24evangelist, you know they're not going to understand.
- 37:27Should I tell you what the argument?
- 37:28Was just so that I think you can understand maybe you can
- 37:30actually give a response to these individuals is that they
- 37:32say when organizations such as Hussain, when they speak about
- 37:37Abdullah, when they talk about Karbala, when they talk about
- 37:39the tragedy of Ashura, they only select OK social injustice,
- 37:44fighting tyranny, fighting evil and corruption, right, as
- 37:48opposed to. As opposed to.
- 37:50The real message right about that embarks on the journey
- 37:53towards Kufa and Karbala. Not sure.
- 37:55What happened where? Where Imam Hassan, he came out
- 37:58to revive them, to restore the teachings of his grandfather of
- 38:01Swallah. Why is this like not mentioned
- 38:04in your propagation? So let's let's go.
- 38:05Through it, there's loads of very, very good points you've
- 38:08made #1. Because there's a primary cause.
- 38:12Let's go back to the question about.
- 38:14Replacing Majalis, the inception of who's the saying in large
- 38:16part, I love for moms and comes from Majalis.
- 38:18And by the way, we are not not attending Majalis.
- 38:20By the way, yeah #1 #2 there are many forms of media, right?
- 38:24You can practice on different levels.
- 38:26One can read a book 1 can have a conversation with a friend.
- 38:30One can attend event. Who's the saying is about in
- 38:33many parts about restoring dignity for the downtrodden.
- 38:36That's why we have a domestic violence refuge in Dallas,
- 38:40Dallas, TX. Yep.
- 38:42Why on the streets of London and Birmingham basically five days a
- 38:46week we're doing a soup kitchen or food drive.
- 38:48It's why if you go to a school in Chicago and you can't afford
- 38:52school supplies to for your kids, you're going to get given
- 38:54a backpack with hers saying. It's why in Mumbai you're going
- 38:57to get food for a long period of time.
- 38:59It's why if you're an orphan in crotch, you get taken to a mall
- 39:02of happiness where you can take anything you want without having
- 39:05to pay, because an orphan should have the joy of being treated to
- 39:08a shopping experience makes be very emotional thinking of that.
- 39:10These are the and I said, I said down dignity for downtrodden
- 39:14dignity. Where's that word come from?
- 39:16Karama comes from and I'm saying that's the word that uses again
- 39:18and again and again an inextricably linked you cannot
- 39:21talk about what I'm saying without talking about dignity.
- 39:24Whatever the poor English translation of Karam is, let's
- 39:26call it dignity or honor or basic.
- 39:28We'd probably say to use a phrase like basic, individual
- 39:32respect and dignity is what who's the saying is about?
- 39:35Who's the saying? You can't follow this man and
- 39:38allow your neighbor, whatever the definition of neighbor is,
- 39:41to be hungry, scared, anxious, nervous, worried, concerned
- 39:45about their well-being or their children's well-being or their
- 39:47parents well-being is. You can't be saying without
- 39:49doing that. You can't just go to Majoris and
- 39:51you know the whole thing about Rasullah 40 neighbors.
- 39:54You know, without having conserve your neighbors, you
- 39:55can't be a Mormon. This is very Hosseini in its
- 39:58orientation. Yeah.
- 39:59We cannot be Hosseini without ensuring the well-being of our
- 40:02society. The betterment of our society is
- 40:05at the kernel and the heart of everything to do with the Mama
- 40:08Hussein. You take that away from Mama
- 40:10Hussein. What is it?
- 40:11We're going to the Majalas for? Mama Hussein died.
- 40:14Guide for the betterment of them as you said that is at the heart
- 40:16of what hosts the same tries to do tries our best to do it's not
- 40:19about superficial work either it's about changing people 's
- 40:23lives the better if in the welfare state or in the the the
- 40:26the the social dynamic yeah the the the the the horizon you're
- 40:32looking at if there's a gap who's the same we'll try and
- 40:34fill it that's what we're. Not add to what you're saying
- 40:36Ali just and what you're saying so because you talked about
- 40:40something interesting you talked about primary and secondary
- 40:42causes of all your mom Ali salamis lafi.
- 40:44Deena jeddi yeah the the Reformation of the Dean of my
- 40:48grandfather which I understand or he'd being a primary mission
- 40:51and of course the secondary missions you know there could be
- 40:54many now I think the way any propagation organization who's
- 41:00the same or others should approach it and I think they do
- 41:03to be honest is scientifically so for example and what money
- 41:06said about not being selfish bro how many friends I we spoke
- 41:09about one of my friends before we start recording who's not
- 41:11Muslim. Who became Muslim became Shia
- 41:14because of Islam and now you get 10s of vaginas with us right why
- 41:18deprive others when they could have the chance of wilaya and
- 41:21like you know what I mean for forever for their lineage to
- 41:24come bro that's the fact and by the way let me just say 3 out of
- 41:274 of us wouldn't be Shia had it not been for Mamas in Islam
- 41:30because of our ancestors who became Shia because of Mamas and
- 41:34mashallah look at the hundreds of thousands and not even that
- 41:37millions of people around the world who are that the 300
- 41:391,000,000 Shias existed because of at the time you know when
- 41:42they? Imam himself only has 72 bro
- 41:45look where we are now as an uma that's what I'm trying to say so
- 41:48I think they approach it scientifically so they say
- 41:50obviously the end goal yet after all the research the historical
- 41:55is the Enlightenment understanding don't read matter
- 41:58for of the imam on an ID level. I think that's the end end goal
- 42:02and I know there's this newsletter process 8 weeks right
- 42:0488 months of news I don't if that's so you're talking about
- 42:07when people sign up for information about this sign up
- 42:09for an information pack eventually we have someones
- 42:12really interested. Yeah they get taken on a
- 42:15reversion process right without me saying this I know I don't
- 42:19have to no no it's it's. Literally who is the saying like
- 42:21who is the saying at the end of the process where they can
- 42:24ultimately come no no no yeah we're not we're not on a mission
- 42:27by the way let's be very clear yeah I handle that if people
- 42:29find if whatever people find you you said I get what you're
- 42:33saying you. Said this which is.
- 42:34Introduce us and we'll take care to paraphrase yes yeah and we
- 42:37are just trying to introduce and then and then add meat on the
- 42:39bone which is to say and and not just make it an ephemeral like
- 42:42bumpus you know there's. Just stick as people put on
- 42:44their laptops like B like Hussein it's about like
- 42:46literally if I have a moral. Dilemma in my life what would
- 42:49Hussein do yeah what would a bra do as well as that it's just
- 42:52like I said scientifically statistically speaking the more
- 42:55people you show a website who is Hussein the domain is a question
- 42:59bro like you showed that domain to 10,000 people 1% 5 10%
- 43:04whatever it is trickle down I'll.
- 43:05Be curious like what is. That I think the other thing.
- 43:07To to also remember or realize is.
- 43:11Think of it this way if we are able to show X 1,000,000 of
- 43:17people about imam Hussein when the hudja when he does return
- 43:21and he introduces himself and if you have got people who already
- 43:25know who imam Hussein is and he says I am the grandson of first
- 43:31of all they've already associated the name Hussein with
- 43:33goodness and are more likely to be soft towards the imams.
- 43:37Message but not only that but if we're trying to and this is kind
- 43:41of like our motto which is creating compassionate
- 43:43communities inspired by Hussein Ibn Ali if we can soften hearts
- 43:48if we can get people to become better versions of themselves
- 43:51when the imam comes back inshallah we have made the job
- 43:54just that little bit easier whereby hearts are more soft and
- 43:58they can understand his message. Which is ultimately the same
- 44:02thing which is the the Dean and the result and the result of
- 44:07Muhammad so can I ask you guys a question?
- 44:09Do you think also global society is in moral decay of course
- 44:12100%? Do you think it's been?
- 44:14Immoral decay is new phenomena it's been moral decay for a long
- 44:17time bro this is the start. Of mankind moral and pabil a.
- 44:23Lot punished. Societies because of moral decay
- 44:25what what is the. What's the antidote for that?
- 44:31Islamic. Relations Islamic principle
- 44:33higher values. Yeah yeah yeah what.
- 44:36In the world. Today gives anyone higher values
- 44:39because right now as far as I'm concerned there's good the few
- 44:42things there are is capitalism that happens to be good good
- 44:44capitalism virtuous capitalism accidentally people would do
- 44:48moral things because CSR is good to do what else maybe some forms
- 44:52of religion but The thing is there's good.
- 44:53And then there's real good right right see what.
- 44:56I mean so there's. Trivial levels of goodness
- 44:58benevolence benevolence and then there's levels of.
- 45:01Of goodness which is innate and transcends everything which is
- 45:04physical it's do you know what I mean I think this is where you
- 45:06get. This debate of goodliness versus
- 45:09godliness right. Yes and that's.
- 45:11What makes imam Hussein stand out about when we talk about
- 45:16these comparisons it's very superficial comparisons because
- 45:21we know as those who are either part of the organization or
- 45:26generally as as she is we know? There is no comparison to him
- 45:31exclusively him of course the Alan bait in general that that's
- 45:34a different I mean outside of the.
- 45:35Fault yeah. And the thing that separates him
- 45:40is the fact that he did all of this for the most purest and
- 45:45selfless reasons that can possibly exist and that is for
- 45:48God you can't get anything that is more selfless and more pure
- 45:53than when you give everything that you can for his sake.
- 45:58But that is a very easy or yeah an easy thing for Shias who have
- 46:02been brought up in this month up to be able to say and maybe I
- 46:06don't claim to say that I've understood it but to be able to
- 46:09to somehow you know get with but for somebody who is perhaps an
- 46:12atheist that is 1,000,000 miles away and they're going to need a
- 46:16few steps from us to make that a little bit more of a gentle
- 46:19process. As far as I'm concerned.
- 46:22I think I think our children all of us have children yeah or our
- 46:26children are going to ask us in 40 years time.
- 46:28How is your generation allowed a live genocide to be broadcast a
- 46:32live genocide has been broadcast every single day no one all goes
- 46:37by without more updates on this live genocide what on earth has
- 46:40happened to our world where not only is it live broadcast but
- 46:44the flames are being found by the most powerful forces of our
- 46:48very earth of our very structures every single
- 46:53structure of society? The corporate capital private
- 46:56sector public sector is fanning the flames of it all in that
- 46:59favour what has happened to our World War I agree with that that
- 47:02has allowed it to get to the point where people are literally
- 47:04like lusting to your blood do you know what the most powerful
- 47:07I think I think I think what what what both of you have
- 47:09mentioned about the goodliness and the godliness and the fact
- 47:13that there's a process we have to go through it and if that
- 47:15means can making. The the tragedy of mum Hussein
- 47:20somewhat contemporarily accessible and relevant so be it
- 47:24she asked about Gandhi. That's exactly right and if it
- 47:26means it's a point of access doesn't need we're not saying
- 47:28equal not an end goal it's not and let me give example this but
- 47:31I say that example of Gaza right so the first time has happened
- 47:34you guys heard about the Belgium massacre of Congo.
- 47:36Yes right heart of darkness now all this the region of that is
- 47:40king Leopold the second massacring the Congolese to
- 47:42profit do you know that guy did king Leopold the second he set
- 47:45up a company a corporation he set up site basically set up
- 47:48site called Oxfam right imagine Oxfam today and he said to
- 47:51everyone guys would you all the international community will you
- 47:53come and support Oxfam while I do this work in Congo except he
- 47:56called it Oxfam essentially is what he did so he deceived
- 47:59people into thinking it's a charitable organization it was a
- 48:02private corporation that he profited from destroyed tribes
- 48:05in Congo. He put money in his back pocket
- 48:08that was this we're talking about hundreds of years ago
- 48:11humanity 's been destroying itself eating itself in a
- 48:15cannibalistic way for profit and greed and self promotion for as
- 48:20long as we can think something as far as I'm because I've
- 48:23arrived this basic conclusion my kids are going to ask me this
- 48:26question their kids are going to ask them that question their
- 48:28kids are going to ask them the same question which is how did
- 48:30your generation allow this nonsense this filth.
- 48:33To happen but you know what like.
- 48:35We we something has to change and that's I do think that like
- 48:41like there's a lot of noise around us right in the wild and
- 48:44there's a lot of like nonsense as well at the end of it when we
- 48:48enter these nights of muharram and we just reflect we just
- 48:51remember imam Hussein was khalib and he died of khalib and that
- 48:54loneliness of the imam and you think what did he think in that
- 48:58moment and you think of. Fun out and sacrifice and it
- 49:02jihad and all of these things that the imam gave to Allah that
- 49:06was the the greatest you know I mean he gave his his soul for
- 49:10his Lord and that ultimately is the greatest goodness that
- 49:13becomes godliness and I think that's such a beautiful way to
- 49:16think of it because there's superficial goodness that you
- 49:19see around and yeah that's feeding a guy and donning blood
- 49:21and haircuts that's free and. These are like you said
- 49:24introductions they're keys to enter a door where you learn
- 49:28about godliness and you learn about giving more than yourself
- 49:32do you know what I mean what imam Hussain Salaam Allah Ali
- 49:35what he did was greater than just giving his life he gave
- 49:39everything he gave his reputation he gave.
- 49:42You know the name of his family you know just like we're
- 49:45recording this guys before mahara has begun and obviously
- 49:48before the episode comes out and we're in the days just after the
- 49:52shahada hazard Muslim alayi Salaam and you think about even
- 49:55from hazard Muslim right so he sent his cousin to go on a
- 50:00scouting mission and his cousin went even what hazard Muslim
- 50:03alayi Salaam did himself was just like unthinkable he's I
- 50:08will go to a faraway land. Because I love my cousin imam
- 50:12Hussein I know he's the imam of my time and ultimately I know
- 50:15that he's the Hajj of Allah and he went there and he went and he
- 50:19was alone there he was khalib there he thought there's a
- 50:22greater goodness here and when he was obviously on the rooftop
- 50:25and they gave him the drink of water and it the blood fell into
- 50:28the water and he couldn't drink it this this is Allah 's will
- 50:31ultimately when we think of all of these stories in the context
- 50:34of imam Hussein and you have that inside you that emotion and
- 50:37that raw love that passion. When you speak about imam and
- 50:40Hussein to anyone around you it will always come back to that
- 50:44you know you can talk about all the the the charity staff and
- 50:48all of the all of these like acts of kindness ultimately when
- 50:51you get into a conversation with anyone you will always get back
- 50:55to that because you know that it's more than just all you know
- 50:59the guy he gave up his life and it was more than that you know
- 51:03like even if you were to speak to someone yeah if you had a one
- 51:06hour conversation me and Ali obviously work together?
- 51:09We have a few non-Muslims who we work with who ask us on a yearly
- 51:11basis why you guys taking this day off work both of you have
- 51:14set your whole you know days off you're going to majalis or
- 51:18whatever you're going to the mosque you're wearing black
- 51:20black right so we go through that process that conversation
- 51:23process not mashallah our colleagues know what the deal is
- 51:26you know but it's it's it's like it comes out you know it comes
- 51:31out and you can't contain it. Do you see what I mean no I know
- 51:34I know what you? Mean and I really love the point
- 51:36you mentioned as well about Muslim because it reminds us you
- 51:40know IMAP Hussein called ethiquity like you you are my
- 51:43trusted one right but what struck struck me right now when
- 51:46you mentioned the story is that he was an ambassador to imam
- 51:49Hussein right he did what we. We should you know we're the
- 51:52same way of like yeah we try we try to aspire to be there bro
- 51:56and I think. And I&I think that's critical
- 51:58because we can all become ambassadors of about an
- 52:01organisations like he was Hussein this is.
- 52:03One avenue one road that we can take towards this path and and I
- 52:07think something that's very nice that there's a previous
- 52:09discussion we've had here I think we were talking about the
- 52:13life of our soul Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam and
- 52:15one of the points that was mentioned is that when you
- 52:17interact with non-Muslims when you interact with people who
- 52:20have no faith possibly atheist maybe Christians Jews whoever
- 52:25they are. They don't know who rasul Allah
- 52:28is they haven't met him they haven't read his Sierra they
- 52:32haven't picked up the Quran we represent Islam and our beloved
- 52:35messenger so. In many ways.
- 52:40This Is Us and Charlotte representing about his values
- 52:42his principles his stances why he went there what happened what
- 52:46took place these are all little things I think that we can
- 52:48positively impact the world which is something the world 's
- 52:51missing out if you're an ambassador of.
- 52:52Somewhere representative of someone you're a mirror yeah you
- 52:55have to mirror them exactly you can be no differentiation
- 52:59between the original and the and the not even the replica the
- 53:02second and if there is a difference then it's means that
- 53:06something is wrong that means there must be a fault.
- 53:09We can't allow ourselves to be a faulty representation of that
- 53:12man if we're going to name our children Ali Hassan Hussain
- 53:16Zainab Fatima then we have a huge burden and responsibility
- 53:19on ourselves to put our best foot forward and do our level
- 53:23best to make the better of everything around us to make the
- 53:28best of it number one and number 2 allow us to be a magnet for
- 53:32the true magnificence of those personalities otherwise we've
- 53:36fallen short. And that's the burden the gift
- 53:38the gift comes with that responsibility that's the that's
- 53:41the quid pro quo could I. Ask like with all this being
- 53:43said this is all good work we all recommend you for everything
- 53:47that you do and inshallah give to a feek for the entire team
- 53:50around the world public say can I ask has anything gone wrong
- 53:53during all of this past years like you would change or just
- 53:58very briefly because I'm one I'm sure because you're dealing with
- 54:00you mean. He means interaction yeah like
- 54:03for. Example doesn't feel at times
- 54:05this may become a sales pitch. When you're speaking to
- 54:08non-Muslims he means the? Interactions not internally as a
- 54:10team yeah yeah sorry yeah yeah. That's a really good question
- 54:18OK. Do you mind sorry because me and
- 54:20money worked together and who was the same my role was I used
- 54:24to work with the teams obviously I had a lot of stories Long
- 54:29story short bro there was obviously issues that the teams
- 54:32themselves had yeah a big one was hijab?
- 54:35So can I talk about imam Hussein if my hijab or brothers or
- 54:39sisters mainly sisters in that conversation you know is there
- 54:43an issue there representing the Allah bait talking about the
- 54:46Allah bait no that's one thing another thing was just from what
- 54:51I remember obviously you guys will have live and active
- 54:54stories. People will say there are so
- 54:56many martyrs in history why does this matter only 72 died what
- 54:59about the millions here the hundreds of thousands there you
- 55:02know that's obviously a numerical you know thing and
- 55:04whatnot but there are obviously rebuttals which I said earlier
- 55:07there's a lot of rebuttals that people give in interaction.
- 55:11Each of these. Rebuttals has answers a lot of
- 55:14the things that these teams do which are amazing.
- 55:16Is they do training internal training with new volunteers
- 55:19that come on board they they give them these FAQs people ask
- 55:23OK right so obviously you have to do your reading you have to
- 55:26understand them all per say and you have to understand what it
- 55:27was historically and spiritually as well and then obviously
- 55:31common FAQs that the public have as well right yeah?
- 55:35Look I think in any organization organizational stuff you're
- 55:39always going to have things that you learn from there's always
- 55:41going to be things you could improve.
- 55:43You've asked in terms of like the actual dissemination and the
- 55:47interactions yeah. But it's a unique way of
- 55:50propagating it absolutely is. I humbly wouldn't say anything
- 55:54has gone wrong inshallah but I think things could be better
- 56:02because again remember that target number at the moment as
- 56:06we hear in 20257 billion right people that we need to get
- 56:10through to. And all of these people
- 56:12different races different ethnicities different cultures
- 56:16different religions no religion different walks of life you know
- 56:21they've had different things they've grown up with difficult
- 56:23to speak to all of these people in a way that is going to
- 56:26definitely hit home you may have a way an elevator pitch that I'm
- 56:29thinking in my head that you know that would work on that
- 56:32person you know I've worked at a school for example where it's
- 56:35worked on people I've you know I've.
- 56:38I've sent out those emails every year before asherah to say
- 56:41there's going to be loads of the school hours that had loads of
- 56:43Iraqis so like listen 10% of the school is going to be off
- 56:46tomorrow and after 5 years I've seen that e-mail they're like
- 56:50look who's this Hussein Gray yeah.
- 56:53I'm. In I can chat to you for ages
- 56:57but it's very it is a tall challenge to try and find a way
- 57:01that you can really make sure that every one of our
- 57:04representatives as Ahmed said in those different ways.
- 57:07First of all does the job of being an ambassador and does it
- 57:11in a way that you can actually deliver the message and hit it
- 57:15home so that you've you just made that message land again
- 57:19back to the what happens with the religious journey that's in
- 57:23God's hand we're here to just make sure that you learn about
- 57:26this man and this is a step for you this is a gift you know that
- 57:30you can take with you so I think things can be better.
- 57:35And you know we need more resources and maybe more support
- 57:38etcetera sure but I don't think I'll come there till today
- 57:42anything has gone wrong or devastatingly well maybe there's
- 57:45one or 2 things that have gone wrong that we're not aware of
- 57:47but nothing that has been like Oh my God this is an absolute
- 57:49disaster always a work in. Progress right but we've I can
- 57:54say hand on hand we've done our best the best of our knowledge
- 57:56and God has given us so much grace God I lost once has been
- 57:59so merciful to us we see examples.
- 58:03Every single campaign season every year of God 's hand of of
- 58:09just like mercy and rahma for us.
- 58:13I think the point monsters are made about regionalizing and
- 58:16understanding like for example if you're Nike if you say just
- 58:18do it it's very hard to misunderstand just do it because
- 58:20you reduce something to like a slogan and say you say just do
- 58:23it in angora and you say just do it in Albania OK fine it's 3
- 58:27words you can't go wrong with it but if you talk about a
- 58:29historical figure laced with religious symbolism in people 's
- 58:33second language right from east to West I I talk to someone in.
- 58:37Glasgow differently talked to someone in London forget talking
- 58:40to someone in the you know East Coast versus talking to someone
- 58:43in you know Dhaka Bangladesh completely and so the ability to
- 58:47make that conversation common denominator without losing and
- 58:51without losing deep powerful life changing meaning is very
- 58:54hard and that's a journey we've had to mature on.
- 58:57And there's I'll be honest there's good faith actors and
- 59:00bad faith actors who who are sometimes take misunderstand
- 59:02what we try to do good faith actors and bad faith actors I'm
- 59:05saying both mostly good faith actors but understandably people
- 59:08can misconstrue because people are protective of this man who
- 59:11means so much to them which is very understandable and it's
- 59:13very emotional right you don't talk about my saying that way I
- 59:16understand that and also let's be honest we're all human we're
- 59:21all prone to error so if someone does or says something in one
- 59:24place. I'm not excluding myself from
- 59:27this then it's representative of an organization which is now
- 59:31counting itself as many thousands of volunteers in 60
- 59:34cities in 26 countries of across 5 continents yeah.
- 59:37And if someone. Wants to join this is the same
- 59:39team how how do they go great gift.
- 59:42Who's the same get involved get go to the get involved section
- 59:45e-mail what way more saying? Yes.
- 59:48Or just go. Just go to who's the same.org go
- 59:51to the get involved section it will take you through it we will
- 59:53get the e-mail and we will reach out to uniform and we'll find
- 59:56your local. Team on Facebook or Instagram
- 59:58whatever so if I can. If I can say a couple things
- 1:00:00these guys know how much but they probably don't know how
- 1:00:03much they mean to me how much you mean to me through my 3 old
- 1:00:07brothers Mel God bless you all likewise how much the 3 of you
- 1:00:10inspire me how much you've all done for me individually and
- 1:00:13collectively as well but what who's the same does is?
- 1:00:17Unique, irreplaceable. I'd say we would be behind as a
- 1:00:21Western Shire community. How do we not had Hussain and
- 1:00:25the team there, the brothers and sisters around the world to work
- 1:00:29like tirelessly. Allah knows how much they've put
- 1:00:32into it. And for anyone who's listening
- 1:00:35and who, for anyone who can relate or resonate with what
- 1:00:39you've heard today, please check it out.
- 1:00:41Visit hussain.org. Read the resources first hand,
- 1:00:45support whatever you can. hussein.org/donate.
- 1:00:49The money that is spent goes like only towards good causes
- 1:00:53and I've seen that as a donor. I've I've donated to Hussein
- 1:00:56myself for years, initially at gunpoint but because I'm joking
- 1:01:01I'm still at gunpoint. He's just.
- 1:01:02Donating. You can't.
- 1:01:02See the as in my brothers and my boys?
- 1:01:05No, I'm joking, but no, no, as in you know, the money's going
- 1:01:09in the right places. And finally, of course, become a
- 1:01:12Rep for Hussein to support them. Join your local team.
- 1:01:15You probably have a local team where you live.
- 1:01:16Go and join them now. If you're not what you're doing,
- 1:01:18why listen to aftermarket? You're an hour in.
- 1:01:20You love Imam Hussein, but you're not part of your Hussein
- 1:01:22team. This organization doesn't do to
- 1:01:24us. Can I shamelessly add?
- 1:01:25One more thing please please. Hussein.org.
- 1:01:27Forward slash share If you go on today, we've prepared a load of
- 1:01:31resources for people. They're pre made tweets,
- 1:01:34LinkedIn posts, Instagram posts. We're even going to be uploading
- 1:01:38school assemblies. There's loads of lines, yeah.
- 1:01:41Shops and there's. Loads of things on there.
- 1:01:43Please go on to whosthesame.org/share and just
- 1:01:49let people know your colleagues, your neighbors, your friends,
- 1:01:52whatever it is, let them know about Imam Hussain.
- 1:01:54Let them know the night before. Why are you going to be maybe
- 1:01:58taking a day off or closing the shop or wearing black for the
- 1:02:01day? Let people know.
- 1:02:03This is a gift that God has given to you.
- 1:02:05Don't keep it to yourself. Please, beautiful, I said.
- 1:02:07Any last words? Anyone listening especially
- 1:02:09entering out the nights tomorrow?
- 1:02:15I mean, look, Imam Hussain is not just confined to this season
- 1:02:19and this like he's a year round phenomenon, but it's a good
- 1:02:22opportunity for us to all energize ourselves, whether it's
- 1:02:25Hossein or something else, for us all to become as Hosseini as
- 1:02:28we can. There's all be the best
- 1:02:30ambassadors for this religion, for this man and help us on that
- 1:02:35journey and those around us towards God and and whatever
- 1:02:38form that takes. And we, we as an organization,
- 1:02:42we are, we ask for people's support.
- 1:02:44That's what if, if in these Knights of Muharram you reaffirm
- 1:02:47people tell us all the time in, in Horam, I reaffirm my my
- 1:02:51allegiance to Imam and Hussein. If you find it within yourself
- 1:02:55that there's a calling for you in Hossein, then the tent, the
- 1:02:59door is open for you because this organization not owned by
- 1:03:01us, but whatever form that is, whether that's Hossein or
- 1:03:03somewhere else, this will be the best Hosseinis we can for the
- 1:03:07rest of our lives. That's the best we can do,
- 1:03:10inshallah. No nothing to add, just be part
- 1:03:15of the the journey. I think I'm sounding like a
- 1:03:18broken record. He is truly a gift that none of
- 1:03:22us deserve or did anything to qualify for.
- 1:03:25So please find a way to just spread him with at least one
- 1:03:28person that doesn't know about him and share that gift with
- 1:03:32them. And God is the one that will
- 1:03:34give you a reward for that inshallah.
- 1:03:36A candle is not. Dimmed by lighting out the
- 1:03:38candle I sent. The calendar is not.
- 1:03:40Doomed by light. I need to think about that Oh.
- 1:03:43OK, OK. It's not.
- 1:03:44You don't lose anything by inspiring someone else.
- 1:03:46Yeah, I sent Sherry just. That's a bad one, you know.
- 1:03:49Say it. Is different usually every this
- 1:03:50is our 4th Muharram on the pod. This will be our 4th Muharram
- 1:03:54Mashallah every year we usually start with Mossiba and we end up
- 1:04:00with Mosiba and it's just cyclical.
- 1:04:02But it's it's nice and I'm grateful to you guys obviously
- 1:04:06for for coming on, but it's nice to start the the season, I think
- 1:04:11with something actually practical, at least at.
- 1:04:14Least it gives us ammo in the next over the next few days
- 1:04:17throughout the month of Haram Musafah, how to speak with I
- 1:04:20think non-Muslims. So this has been very
- 1:04:22beneficial, very high opening. The work you do is unique.
- 1:04:25I say may Allah bless you and always you have the love of
- 1:04:28Abdullah, not just in yourself, your offspring and your future
- 1:04:31generation down the line. And I want to ask one question.
- 1:04:34I know what we're almost done, but this is important.
- 1:04:37This is important. Because I've been.
- 1:04:38Co hosting say who is the same? No, this is the fourth.
- 1:04:40Muharram by the. Way, who is this?
- 1:04:44This is the fourth. Muharram that I've had the honor
- 1:04:46of Co hosting with your brother Ahmed.
- 1:04:49I know who Hussein is inshallah, but who's Ahmed?
- 1:04:51Tell me one thing, one thing about Ahmed that something no
- 1:04:56one else knows. Oh.
- 1:04:58My gosh. Yeah, yeah, I need to know.
- 1:05:00Before the episode ends. The part where I get out ready.
- 1:05:05I'm it's a very loyal. Guy.
- 1:05:07Oh no, I know. It's very like in his heart.
- 1:05:11He's very loyal. He's a Liverpool fan, for
- 1:05:13example. He's very loyal to Liverpool and
- 1:05:16when he was a Chelsea fan he was very loyal to Chelsea.
- 1:05:19If you if you cut him. Now his blood will bleed red.
- 1:05:22Yeah, I said. Not always the case.
- 1:05:24Maybe. Very loyal guy terms.
- 1:05:26And conditions of life. Love says May I love.
- 1:05:27Bless you both and yourself, brother.
- 1:05:29Thank you very much. Yeah.
- 1:05:31I don't want to say that I'm not going to talk about not going to
- 1:05:34talk about Premier League football on the night, not
- 1:05:36today. But yeah.
- 1:05:37All right, guys, thank you so much for tuning in.
- 1:05:39Thank you to to Ali and Montazo for joining us.
- 1:05:41Make sure you check their workout father, who's the same
- 1:05:44on their campaign for this moment, which I believe is going
- 1:05:46to be absolutely incredible. And from what we've seen so far.
- 1:05:51And make sure you subscribe to aftermarket.
- 1:05:52As I have said, if it's your first time here, welcome.
- 1:05:56If you're here for the recurring or you've been here before,
- 1:05:58welcome back. And inshallah, stay tuned
- 1:06:01because this will be inshallah a season where we all go on a
- 1:06:04journey and where we continue to uplift as a community.
- 1:06:09Lovely to speak to you all and listen.
- 1:06:12Please remember us in your daughter in these coming nights.
- 1:06:15Take care of Shallow. See you next week.
