Latest / The Gathering Line / Hormuz Risk, Rockies Bottlenecks, and the Gernzee Premium
Transcript
- 0:00Monday, October fifth.
- 0:02Here's what moved since Friday morning, and what it means for Rockies and Bakken
- 0:06barrels.
- 0:07Global first.
- 0:08The seven core OPEC Plus members met online Sunday and agreed to hold November
- 0:12production targets unchanged.
- 0:14That matched expectations, so there's no surprise to price.
- 0:18OPEC's September report had the group at about twenty five million barrels per day
- 0:22in August, up six hundred thirty thousand from July.
- 0:25The next planned increment, one hundred eighty thousand barrels per day,
- 0:28is aimed at December, and it depends on overproducers like Iraq and Kazakhstan
- 0:33submitting compensation cuts.
- 0:35Treat that as a conditional, not a promise.
- 0:38Futures reopened without drama.
- 0:40December Brent traded between a hundred and one dollars and forty two cents and a
- 0:44hundred and two dollars and twenty five cents Monday morning,
- 0:46down about eight tenths of a percent, per CNBC.
- 0:50W T I eased to ninety dollars and fifty cents, off Friday's settle of ninety one
- 0:54eleven.
- 0:55That leaves the Brent to W T I spread somewhere between ten ninety two and eleven
- 0:59seventy five depending on which pair of prints you use.
- 1:02Either way, call it about eleven dollars of pull toward the Gulf Coast docks.
- 1:07The supply risk is in Hormuz.
- 1:09Kpler shows Gulf crude exports back at prewar levels, a seven day average of
- 1:13eighteen point three million barrels per day on September thirtieth,
- 1:16with Vortexa's fourteen day figure at eighteen point six.
- 1:20Saudi Arabia is driving that, and its East West line to Yanbu has been flowing again
- 1:24since September twenty second.
- 1:26Roughly forty percent of regional exports now bypass the strait.
- 1:29But Marisks counts at least seven tanker incidents in the past week,
- 1:33including the Aframax Lipsi on October fourth, engine room damaged,
- 1:37crew safe.
- 1:38The Kuwaiti supertanker Kazimah III was hit October first.
- 1:42Marisks suggests Iranian forces may be firing into a kill box.
- 1:45That's their read, not a confirmed pattern.
- 1:48The G7 and EU release of one hundred million barrels is the cap on the upside.
- 1:53North America.
- 1:54The headline is Cenovus agreeing to buy Athabasca Oil for an enterprise value of
- 1:59five point seven billion Canadian dollars, about four billion U.S.,
- 2:03cash and stock, at twelve Canadian dollars a share, a thirteen point four percent
- 2:07premium per Reuters.
- 2:09It adds about forty five thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day of thermal
- 2:13production at Leismer and Corner, plus full ownership of Duvernay Energy.
- 2:18Cenovus targets a hundred and fifteen thousand barrels per day of thermal output by
- 2:22twenty thirty two, and closing is expected in December.
- 2:25Thermal heavy barrels, so the relevance is long dated supply into the Canada to
- 2:29Rockies flow.
- 2:31On the desk's numbers, W C S at Hardisty widened to sixteen sixty five under W T I
- 2:36over the weekend, tied to Midwest refinery maintenance.
- 2:39Express into Casper is full at two hundred eighty thousand barrels per day.
- 2:43Trans Mountain is steady near sixty percent.
- 2:46Maya flows to Mexico remain curtailed.
- 2:49United States.
- 2:50No E I A release since Friday.
- 2:52The next report is Wednesday.
- 2:54The last one showed a commercial crude build, but the size varies by table,
- 2:58anywhere from nine hundred twenty two thousand to one point eight million barrels,
- 3:02so I won't hand you a single number.
- 3:04Refinery utilization fell to ninety one point four percent.
- 3:08The part that matters to you: the Rockies, PADD Four, drew eight hundred twenty
- 3:11three thousand barrels to twenty two point five million, while the Midwest built.
- 3:16Cushing remains thin, near operational bottoms, which keeps prompt barrels firm.
- 3:21Baker Hughes Friday: total rigs down one to five hundred ninety eight,
- 3:25oil rigs up four to four hundred eleven.
- 3:28The market is also positioning around a reported Enbridge deal for Tallgrass crude
- 3:32assets, including Pony Express.
- 3:34I haven't seen the terms confirmed in a primary source, so treat it as reported.
- 3:39Uinta Basin.
- 3:40Waxy output is steady, and nothing new from Veren, Ovintiv,
- 3:44Scout, Uinta Wax, Berry, or SM Energy's XCL position over the weekend.
- 3:50Yellow wax carries about a three dollar and twenty cent premium at Gulf Coast
- 3:54refineries, but railcar freight runs sixteen to eighteen dollars a barrel.
- 3:59That premium doesn't come close to covering it.
- 4:01Salt Lake City refiners cap out around eighty thousand barrels per day,
- 4:05so everything above that goes by heated truck or rail.
- 4:09On the Uinta Basin Railway, the Supreme Court affirmed the environmental review and
- 4:13the D.C.
- 4:13Circuit remanded to the Surface Transportation Board, with the approval left in
- 4:17place.
- 4:18But remand proceedings and Forest Service right of way reviews are still open,
- 4:22the two point two to two point five billion in private financing hasn't closed,
- 4:27and no ground has been broken.
- 4:29Your terminal remains the basin's egress for now.
- 4:31Bakken.
- 4:33North Dakota output is holding near one point nineteen to one point two million
- 4:37barrels per day.
- 4:38No new Director's Cut over the weekend.
- 4:40Gas capture is above ninety five percent.
- 4:43Dakota Access is running near full, so there's essentially no spot space south.
- 4:48Rail to the coast costs ten to fifteen dollars a barrel, which keeps it uneconomic
- 4:53for barrels that can reach a pipe.
- 4:55Rail is confined to committed refinery and utility contracts.
- 4:59Clearbrook trades a dollar fifty to two ten under Guernsey.
- 5:02Chevron and Hess Midstream keep leaning on longer laterals,
- 5:06and Hess Midstream is guiding to at least five percent volume growth in the second
- 5:10half.
- 5:10Powder River.
- 5:12Anschutz, Continental, Devon, EOG, and Peak are running steady programs.
- 5:17Plains' five hundred eighty five million dollar purchase of Silver Creek's gathering
- 5:21system keeps consolidating the front end.
- 5:23The headwind is downstream: Kinder Morgan's conversion of Double H,
- 5:27eighty eight thousand barrels per day, to N G L service takes a Dore to Gernzee
- 5:31crude conduit off the board.
- 5:33Now Gernzee, the piece that matters most.
- 5:36The desk has light sweet holding at about eighty five cents over Cushing and roughly
- 5:41two ten over Clearbrook.
- 5:43Holding is the word.
- 5:44I can't confirm a directional move over a longer window from what I have,
- 5:48and these are desk quotes, not a published assessment, so check them against your
- 5:52own prints.
- 5:54Why the premium?
- 5:55Tanks at the hub are full of Canadian, Powder River, and Bakken barrels competing
- 6:00for scarce southbound space.
- 6:02Pony Express, about four hundred thirty thousand barrels per day,
- 6:06and Platte are both heavily constrained.
- 6:08Apportionment is so tight that scheduled pipeline space is trading at a premium to
- 6:13physical barrels in the tank.
- 6:14That's the signal.
- 6:16The scarce asset is the slot, not the crude.
- 6:19The Tallgrass and Bridger thirty day binding joint open season for incentive rates
- 6:23from Gernzee to Cushing still governs commitments.
- 6:26Bridger's proposed five hundred fifty thousand barrel per day cross border line
- 6:29remains in planning, so no relief there.
- 6:32The netback math has three paths.
- 6:34Take proration on Pony or Platte.
- 6:37Dump into Clearbrook at a two dollar and ten cent penalty.
- 6:40Or pay rail rates that don't work.
- 6:42With the Brent arb near eleven dollars, a barrel that gets a pipeline slot through
- 6:46Gernzee to Cushing and on to the Gulf captures far better netbacks than one stranded
- 6:50in a turnaround heavy Midwest.
- 6:53That's the brief.
- 6:54Next E I A report is Wednesday.
