- 0:41Preamble of Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 0:43Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who
- 0:47share their experience strength and hope with each other then
- 0:50both. So they come problems and help
- 0:52others to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:55The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop
- 0:58drinking. There are no Jews are faced with
- 1:00a membership. We are self-supporting through
- 1:02our own contributions is not allied with any sect in
- 1:06nomination politics organization order.
- 1:09Tushin does not wish to engage in any controversy.
- 1:13Neither endorses that oppose any causes our primary purpose is
- 1:17still Sovereign help. Other alcoholics achieve
- 1:19sobriety. Hi, my name is Jason.
- 1:24I'm an alcoholic. My drinking started in the late
- 1:29teenage years. It was all pretty, pretty
- 1:33normal. Just sort of social drinking at,
- 1:37you know, at night, with with, with friends and then, you know,
- 1:44later on, going out after work, with work friends, that sort of
- 1:50thing going out. Tonight clubs and and bars and
- 1:55that sort of stuff and and yeah and you know it just progressed
- 2:01for me from there but looking back even in those earliest
- 2:08years the way I drank was different to everybody else.
- 2:14And and yeah my drinking I had to drink faster than anyone
- 2:21else. It's and or I did anyway.
- 2:24And and so you know rounds were really really hard for me when
- 2:29if I was out with a group of from work and we were doing
- 2:34rounds at the pub. That was so difficult for me
- 2:38because to wait for, you know, like I would have completely
- 2:44finished my beer and and these other guys would would be 3/4
- 2:50full still, you know, And that sort of thing and, you know, for
- 2:55me to sneak off to the bar and get another drink, it would look
- 2:59like I'm skipping out on the round, you know.
- 3:03And yeah, so those kind of things when you're someone who
- 3:09just, you know, has this disease of alcoholism in them.
- 3:16You just you go further than anyone else and fast.
- 3:22Other than anyone else. And anyway my drinking
- 3:25progressed to the stage where, you know, I would I would drink
- 3:31every night after work and and then that progressed into, you
- 3:38know, I'll have a drink on Friday lunchtime you know for
- 3:45the last day of the working week with with a pub meal you know
- 3:50and then and then that progressed into hot meals every
- 3:53day, the working week and then that progressed into okay, while
- 3:58getting these these hangovers on a, on a, on a Saturday and
- 4:04Sunday morning, I'd better have a quick drink to, you know, just
- 4:10so I feel a bit better on a on a Saturday morning, you know, and
- 4:15then that progressed into getting pretty drunk watching
- 4:18music videos on just On Saturday and Sunday mornings and and then
- 4:25that progressed to well, you know, it's the last day, the
- 4:28working week and I had a big pretty big 3000 by this stage.
- 4:33I was going on and to nightclubs on Thursday nights pretty
- 4:37regularly. And and that progress to I'll
- 4:42just have a have a quick drink to get it, rid of the hangover
- 4:45again, you know, and and yeah and then that progressed to
- 4:52Every morning of the week, you know, when I started, I knew I
- 4:57had a new in myself that I had a problem with alcohol, when I,
- 5:05when I started to drink in the mornings, you know, because that
- 5:11that's when I guess it hit me that there might be something
- 5:15wrong here. And then, you know, having the
- 5:18pains physical pains in my mind. Liver or the kidneys.
- 5:24You know, I just saw how she, you know, that's, that's a bit
- 5:29unusual, but I knew that having another drink would make it go
- 5:32away. So, I just did that and, you
- 5:37know, when I had those pains there was this fleeting thought
- 5:39of yeah, what am I doing to my body?
- 5:42But then I'd have another drink and I wouldn't wouldn't mind.
- 5:48So anyway, what happened with me?
- 5:52Is that I ended up having a really big long weekend on the
- 5:57Queen's birthday long weekend of 2009.
- 6:02I had a really big Friday night on on alcohol and and what we
- 6:08say and in the rooms about how it's Anonymous is and some of
- 6:12its cousins which is a bit of a euphemism referring to illicit
- 6:17drugs. So yeah and but that's another
- 6:21story. A for another 12-step.
- 6:23Fellowships that I'm a member of called Narcotics Anonymous.
- 6:27But anyway, so yeah, I had this big one Friday night, you know,
- 6:34I was, I was drinking really heavily that Nile night and and
- 6:39I come, I come home. And I remember after I had a bit
- 6:46of a sleep on Saturday, wasn't wasn't too much, I Then I tried
- 6:53to have a beer on Saturday night and and I remember, I just my
- 7:01hand was just shaking uncontrollably.
- 7:05And I just couldn't drink this beer because I was shaking too
- 7:09much and I thought, oh, that's a bit bit weird.
- 7:15And I thought well, okay. I'll go to bed and and CEO.
- 7:22See how it is in the morning. And, you know, I woke up Sunday
- 7:26morning pretty sick. And I thought, well, that's
- 7:29okay. It's a long weekend, public
- 7:32holiday Monday. I'll I'll just, you know, I'll
- 7:38just ride this out and I'll be right for work on Tuesday.
- 7:42Well, cheers day came. I was still sick, Wednesday
- 7:44came. I was still really sick vomiting
- 7:48and stuff like that and on this Wednesday.
- 7:52My I was living alone at this stage and and I am my mother
- 8:00came around to check up on me, and because she found out that I
- 8:03had another day off work sick. And she took one.
- 8:07Look at me and said, I think I need to take you to the
- 8:10hospital. And I said, no, no this okay,
- 8:16I'll I'll go to the GP, I'll just get something for it, you
- 8:20know, and it'll be okay, it'll be all right.
- 8:24She said no, I really think I should take you to the hospital
- 8:28and and you know from what I was going into there is is what we
- 8:34refer to in Alcoholics. Anonymous has justification and
- 8:38denial. So yeah.
- 8:41Anyway, she In the end, the hospital and I had three
- 8:48seizures on the table and emergency that afternoon, I was
- 8:52declared clinically dead and had to be brought back with the
- 8:56paddles and and after that, they thought they well, they better,
- 9:03they thought they'd better a bit me after that.
- 9:04So I was in the ward and, and even after all that, I still
- 9:12didn't, I still didn't think I had an inkling that, you know,
- 9:16something was badly wrong, but I still didn't think there was a
- 9:21problem, you know. And anyway, I had a doctor
- 9:27standing over my bed. Telling me that, you know, I'm
- 9:33not letting you leave this hospital until you're in some
- 9:36kind of a 12-step program or rehab or something.
- 9:42And and basically yeah through you know, through a bit of a bit
- 9:50of convincing from my family which involved a trip to get
- 9:55some ice cream because that's the sort of maturity level I had
- 10:00back then. Anyway, so after bribing me with
- 10:04ice cream, they got me to go ahead to this to this rehab
- 10:08facility and have a meeting there.
- 10:11With the staff from the rehab that they'd found and, and, you
- 10:16know, I was I didn't recall any of this until years later, but
- 10:23apparently, I was told I was quite belligerently drunk, you
- 10:28know, a belligerent drunk at this meeting and you know, I
- 10:33just I swore them you know, I didn't want to be there.
- 10:37I question their credentials that sort of thing, but He just
- 10:42stood over the desk and he just nodded and he said, yep, I think
- 10:47I can help you. And anyway that I was admitted
- 10:53into that rehab but I knew in myself that I had to be there
- 11:00because it was only a couple of days later that I was down at
- 11:04the bank, getting a bank check borrowing against my mortgage to
- 11:09pay for the rehab. Scylla T.
- 11:13This was a private rehab and it wasn't cheap.
- 11:16So anyway, I did that. And yeah, the thing is I knew
- 11:24for years. Before I before I went into that
- 11:28rehab that I had a problem with alcohol, I knew it in myself.
- 11:33I just couldn't speak it out loud to anyone else, you know,
- 11:37when it when it come to, I remember I had a meeting.
- 11:41Eating at work with some people from HR and stuff like this.
- 11:47And and they, you know, I was quite drunk at that on that day.
- 11:54And and you know, it was like 3:00 p.m. on a Wednesday
- 11:58afternoon or something and and, and yai yai yai.
- 12:05I remember them saying, you know, they wanted to put me on
- 12:10some fixed hours. To try and control me a little
- 12:15bit. And and you know they said are
- 12:22like I said well i-i'll get in at 8 a.m. and I remember the
- 12:28manager say time that no no she said I would prefer you you
- 12:34getting at 9 a.m. and and at that moment in my my mind what I
- 12:43wanted to say was you can't have me arrived at work at 9:00 a.m.
- 12:49because I'll be drunk by 9 a.m. you know, because if I wake up
- 12:55at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. I'm just going to drink until
- 13:00it's time to go and get the trade but you know I just those
- 13:05words didn't come out. So that's what I mean when I say
- 13:09that I knew I had a problem. I just didn't have the, you
- 13:16know, I guess there was, there was a lot of fear there.
- 13:20I had fear that by, by telling the rest of the world that I was
- 13:25an alcoholic. That would mean that, you know,
- 13:29as soon as I speak it out, my my party lifestyle that I'd be
- 13:34living, would come to an abrupt end.
- 13:37And, and my fear was how am I ever going to have fun again?
- 13:42How am I ever gonna laugh again? You know, how am I supposed to
- 13:48have a, have a laugh or or have fun without alcohol?
- 13:53Well for anyone who's listening to this, who feels the same way.
- 13:58Let me tell you, in the last 13 years that I've been in
- 14:03Alcoholics Anonymous, I have never laughed so much or had so
- 14:08much fun in my entire life, honestly.
- 14:13So anyway, after the stint at the rehab, I as part of that
- 14:20rehab program, they took us to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings
- 14:24and products Anonymous meetings and I even went to a couple of
- 14:27Overeaters and Gamblers Anonymous meetings because they
- 14:31would go to the meetings that would reflect the addictions
- 14:36that people were in there for at the time and and yeah.
- 14:42So anyway, When I got out I I knew you know I first I just
- 14:50went into the same pattern that the people from Alcoholics
- 14:53Anonymous. Sorry from the people from the
- 14:56rehab, the same Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that they
- 14:58were going to but eventually I branched out and and went to
- 15:04some Alcoholics Anonymous meetings independently and and
- 15:10yeah it you know I It took me a long time before I could admit
- 15:20that I was an alcoholic in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous,
- 15:23you know. And as soon as I remember one
- 15:29guy in particular, he told me that, you know, it took you so
- 15:34long to admit that every time you say it is like I want to
- 15:38clap and cheer. Now, you know, and Yeah, and I
- 15:43had the same sort of feedback from, you know, one of the one
- 15:50of the people I hurt or when I was at work during my drinking
- 15:57time, it looked like he was going to manage me again.
- 16:01And and so we had a meeting and and I I told my story, you know,
- 16:08I said to the guy, look, I'm an alcoholic in Alcoholics
- 16:12Anonymous. Thomas now and and you know I'm
- 16:16working the 12 steps of recovery and as part of that I have to
- 16:23make an amends for the wrongs that I've done and and that sort
- 16:27of thing. And and and yeah, I could
- 16:30pinpoint the exact guy and the exact time when our working
- 16:35relationship changed because I looked at him straight in the
- 16:40eye and I lied to him. I lied to him about my drinking
- 16:46and that sort of stuff and on this particular day years later.
- 16:52Once was, once I was sober, I looked at him again and and told
- 16:58him and after I'd finished telling a bit of my story, he
- 17:05said to me, well I don't know what to say after that, you
- 17:09know, except that what took you so long?
- 17:13You know, often, we think that. Well, people who have a problem
- 17:21with alcohol, often think that they are able to hide it from
- 17:28friends, family members, co-workers, all the rest of the
- 17:31people. But the reality is, they know,
- 17:35they know, they might not know the extent to you to which your
- 17:38drink and they might not know how Heavily you drank and that
- 17:45kind of thing. But they know that you that
- 17:51you're arriving to work drunk or that you arriving to, you know,
- 17:56functions drunk and family, gatherings and that sort of
- 18:00thing and and yeah I had a lot of work to do when I come in
- 18:05Narcotics Anonymous. I, you know, my my front my
- 18:10entire family pretty much apart from one or two.
- 18:13Two people had stopped talking to me and and yeah, I had a lot
- 18:20of work to do on that front too gnarly.
- 18:24Show them that I was serious about staying sober but also
- 18:31that I had to I had a lot of work to do to rebuild that
- 18:35trust, you know, trust is just one of those things that it can
- 18:41take a lifetime to build up. About seconds to lose.
- 18:46You know, you you can lose it in one one incident, you know.
- 18:50But for me I lost it that trust over a lot.
- 18:55Yeah, a lot more incidents. So, yeah.
- 18:59Anyway, I had a lot of work to do and, and yeah, so it's been a
- 19:04journey, you know, it's been a journey, but my life is so much
- 19:09better now. You know, I wouldn't have The
- 19:13job, I do. Now, if it wasn't for our color
- 19:15synonymous, I had a career change after I got sober and and
- 19:22I wouldn't have, I wouldn't be living where I am now.
- 19:27I wouldn't have the friends I do now, with the exception of one
- 19:33or two people, pretty much all the, all the people I knew.
- 19:36And, and let's make this clear towards the end of my drinking.
- 19:40I didn't have too many people who are friends.
- 19:43You know, I didn't I didn't really haven't met many people
- 19:46left at all. I remember I would get on the
- 19:49train in the morning, to go to work and people would actively
- 19:54move away from me because I would stink of alcohol.
- 19:59But see, I didn't know that idelle, I was just oblivious to
- 20:03the fact that people are moving away from me.
- 20:06And I didn't know, I had no idea because you don't And and yes,
- 20:15oh yeah my way my alcoholism was diagnosed as chronic as in a
- 20:21chronic alcoholic and when I was in hospital, I was told that I
- 20:25was so close to liver disease. It wasn't funny.
- 20:29And and that, yeah, basically, what I've been told since is
- 20:34that if I was to go and drink again, I would resume the damage
- 20:40to my liver, basically, where it left off.
- 20:43And that, that would mean cirrhosis of the liver for me
- 20:47and death shortly thereafter. And and, you know, these days, I
- 20:53have so much to live for. I'm engaged to be married to a
- 21:00beautiful woman and I'll have a stepson in my life.
- 21:05Well, I have him in my life now but I'm working on on, have it
- 21:11as she lives overseas. I'm working The, you know,
- 21:14immigrating them down to Australia and, and yeah, it's a
- 21:20process. But, you know, it's a process
- 21:22that I wouldn't have been able to go through, if I was still
- 21:26drinking because when I was drinking, nobody wanted to know
- 21:30me, but anyway. Yeah.
- 21:34And you know, that's not to say that.
- 21:36I don't have days where I just, I want to, you know, stay in
- 21:42bed. All day or, you know, I just
- 21:45want to ignore the rest of the world or, you know, it's not as
- 21:50if I don't have bad days. You know, I do because I'm human
- 21:55Alcoholics Anonymous. This this 12-step program of
- 22:00recovery. And and by the way, I am, I
- 22:05would refer to myself as a recovered alcoholic.
- 22:08What I've recovered from is the is the The need for a drink, you
- 22:18know, I have recovered from the craving of alcohol.
- 22:23Yeah. And that, that craving was not
- 22:26easy. That that's when you turn up
- 22:31into the ruins of Alcoholics Anonymous, whether it's by your
- 22:34own volition, or whether it's through a rehab.
- 22:37It doesn't matter. You still have those those those
- 22:41craving. That craving for alcohol.
- 22:45You still have those moments when you when you really want to
- 22:48drink but you know, you can't all that, you shouldn't or
- 22:51whatever it is and and, you know, yeah, so yeah, it's been a
- 22:59long time since I had any serious thought of picking up a
- 23:03drink. It's been many, many years.
- 23:07And, and for that, I am very, very grateful eternally
- 23:11grateful, And you know, for people listening to this, I know
- 23:18that, you know, you may look at the 12 steps of recovery that
- 23:23I'm talking about and you may see the word god mentioned in
- 23:26there a lot. Let me tell you, this is not a
- 23:30religious thing. It's God in the as mentioned in
- 23:35our program, is simply means a higher power of your own
- 23:39understanding. That is a power greater than
- 23:42yourself. And at that, can mean anything,
- 23:46you know, for some people that's nature for some people.
- 23:48It's, it's, it's actually the other people in the rooms of our
- 23:53colleagues in terms of self. That's what helps a lot of
- 23:56people. When they first come in, you
- 23:57know, my, my, my higher power is the meeting because we, if I
- 24:02didn't go there, I wouldn't be able to stay sober.
- 24:05You know, that's what helped me along for a long time and I
- 24:09couldn't actually use the word god.
- 24:13Talking about, you know, that in my shares, that Alcoholics
- 24:17Anonymous, or anything like that.
- 24:19For a long time for many years, until I, until I really came
- 24:25became in touch with a power greater than myself.
- 24:28Then I then I could use it. And yeah, this thing it really
- 24:35does work. It's worth doing because you're
- 24:39worth it. You know, I've suffered Heard
- 24:43from depression and I've suffered from years of isolation
- 24:48and loneliness. You know, when I was drinking
- 24:54that isolation and loneliness, I, you know, I had no idea that
- 24:59it was because of alcohol. Yeah, I just didn't didn't know.
- 25:03That alcohol could have been causing the problem.
- 25:06You know, that the way that people who are alcoholics
- 25:10normally think is that everything else?
- 25:13Is going to cause the problem that no, not the alcohol.
- 25:16You know, the alcohol is, there is our best friend and, and
- 25:22yeah. So, anyway, it's, you know, like
- 25:28I was saying with the exception of one or two people, all the
- 25:32friends I have now connected with Alcoholics Anonymous in
- 25:35some way or shape, or form. And, and it's, it's, it's just
- 25:43Say it's a great life. You know I've been traveling all
- 25:48over Australia and overseas to do this this thing and and yeah
- 25:56well it's so we have we have camps Tagalongs you know
- 26:03roundups all sorts of events all over Australia that people can
- 26:09go on and be part of something. And and for me I just I didn't
- 26:16feel part of something until I came to our colleague Samaras
- 26:22and end. Till I really became sober, got
- 26:26a sponsor started working, the 12 steps, you know, and doing
- 26:31the other suggested things that are suggested for someone to
- 26:35stay sober. So yeah that's my story.
- 26:41Thanks for listening. And and yeah, maybe I'll I'll
- 26:46see one of you listening in the in the rooms of Alcoholics
- 26:50Anonymous sometime soon. We have local meetings for the
