- 0:00Speaker 1: Alma, chapter forty six. And it came to pass that
- 0:04Speaker 1: as many as would not hearken to the words of
- 0:07Speaker 1: Heliman and his brethren were gathered together against their brethren.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And now behold, they were exceedingly wroth, insomuch that they
- 0:15Speaker 1: were determined to slay them. Now the leader of those
- 0:19Speaker 1: who were wroth against their brethren was a large and
- 0:21Speaker 1: a strong man, and his name was Amalachiah. And Amlachia
- 0:26Speaker 1: was desirous to be a king. And those people who
- 0:29Speaker 1: were wroth were also desirous that he should be their king.
- 0:33Speaker 1: And they were the greater part of them, the lower
- 0:35Speaker 1: judges of the land, and they were seeking for power.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And they had been led by the flatteries of Amalachia
- 0:42Speaker 1: that if they would support him and establish him to
- 0:46Speaker 1: be their king, that he would make them rulers over
- 0:48Speaker 1: the people. Thus they were led away by Amalachia to dissensions,
- 0:52Speaker 1: notwithstanding the preaching of Heliman and his brethren, Yea, notwithstanding
- 0:57Speaker 1: their exceedingly great care over the church, for they were
- 1:00Speaker 1: high priests over the church, and there were many in
- 1:03Speaker 1: the church who believed in the flattering words of a Malachiah.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Therefore they dissented even from the Church. And thus were
- 1:10Speaker 1: the affairs of the people of Nephi exceedingly precarious and dangerous,
- 1:15Speaker 1: notwithstanding their great victory which they had had over the Lamanites,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and their great rejoicings which they had had because of
- 1:22Speaker 1: their deliverance by the hand of the Lord. Thus we
- 1:27Speaker 1: see how quick the children of men do forget the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity and
- 1:33Speaker 1: to be led away by the evil one, yea. And
- 1:36Speaker 1: we also see the great wickedness one very wicked man
- 1:40Speaker 1: can cause to take place among the children of men. Yea.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We see that a Malachia, because he was a man
- 1:46Speaker 1: of cunning device and a man of many flattering words,
- 1:49Speaker 1: that he led away the hearts of many people to
- 1:51Speaker 1: do wickedly yea, and to seek to destroy the Church
- 1:55Speaker 1: of God, and to destroy the foundation of liberty which
- 1:58Speaker 1: God had granted unto them, or which blessing God had
- 2:02Speaker 1: sent upon the face of the land for the righteous's sake.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And now it came to pass that when Moroni, who
- 2:09Speaker 1: was the chief commander of the armies of the Nephites,
- 2:12Speaker 1: had heard of these dissensions, he was angry with the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Melachiah and it came to pass that he rent his coat,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and he took a piece thereof and wrote upon it
- 2:22Speaker 1: in memory of our God, our religion and freedom, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: our peace, our wives, and our children. And he fastened
- 2:31Speaker 1: it upon the end of a pole. And he fastened
- 2:34Speaker 1: on his head plate and his breastplate, and his shields,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and girded on his armor about his loins. And he
- 2:40Speaker 1: took the pole which had on the end thereof his
- 2:43Speaker 1: rent coat, and he called it the title of Liberty.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed
- 2:50Speaker 1: mightily unto his God, for the blessings of liberty to
- 2:53Speaker 1: rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a
- 2:56Speaker 1: band of Christians remain to possess the land. For thus
- 3:00Speaker 1: were all the true believers of Christ who belonged to
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Church of God called by those who did not
- 3:04Speaker 1: belong to the Church. And those who did belong to
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Church were faithful. Yea, All those who were true
- 3:11Speaker 1: believers in Christ took upon them gladly the name of Christ,
- 3:14Speaker 1: or Christians, as they were called, because of their belief
- 3:18Speaker 1: in Christ. Who should come. And therefore, at this time
- 3:21Speaker 1: Marona prayed that the cause of the Christians and the
- 3:24Speaker 1: freedom of the land might be favored. And it came
- 3:27Speaker 1: to pass that, when he had poured out his soul
- 3:29Speaker 1: to God, he named all the land which was south
- 3:32Speaker 1: of the land desolation Yea, and in fine all the land,
- 3:36Speaker 1: both on the north and on the south, a chosen
- 3:38Speaker 1: land and a land of liberty. And he said, surely,
- 3:42Speaker 1: God shall not suffer that we who are despised because
- 3:45Speaker 1: we take upon us the name of Christ, shall be
- 3:47Speaker 1: trodden down and destroyed until we bring it upon us
- 3:50Speaker 1: by our own transgressions. And when Marona had said these words,
- 3:54Speaker 1: he went forth among the people, waving the rent part
- 3:57Speaker 1: of his garment in the air that all might see
- 4:00Speaker 1: the writing which he had written upon the rent part,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and crying with a loud voice, saying, behold, whosoever will
- 4:07Speaker 1: maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the strength of the Lord and enter into a covenant,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that they will maintain their rights and their religion, that
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Lord God may bless them. And it came to
- 4:20Speaker 1: pass that when Marona had proclaimed these words, behold, the
- 4:24Speaker 1: people came running together with their armor girded about their loins,
- 4:28Speaker 1: rending their garments in token or as a covenant that
- 4:32Speaker 1: they would not forsake the Lord their God. Or, in
- 4:35Speaker 1: other words, if they should transgress the commandments of God,
- 4:39Speaker 1: or fall into transgression and be ashamed to take upon
- 4:42Speaker 1: them the name of Christ, the Lord should rend them,
- 4:46Speaker 1: even as they had rent their garments. Now this was
- 4:49Speaker 1: the covenant which they made, and they cast their garments
- 4:53Speaker 1: at the feet of Morona, saying, we covenant with our
- 4:56Speaker 1: God that we shall be destroyed even as our brethren
- 4:59Speaker 1: the land northward. If we shall fall into transgression, yea,
- 5:03Speaker 1: he may cast us at the feet of our enemies,
- 5:06Speaker 1: even as we have cast our garments at the feet,
- 5:08Speaker 1: to be trodden underfoot, if we shall fall into transgression,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Morona said unto them, behold, we are a remnant of
- 5:16Speaker 1: the seed of Jacob. Yea. We are a remnant of
- 5:19Speaker 1: the seed of Joseph, whose coat was rent by his
- 5:22Speaker 1: brethren into many pieces. Yea. And now behold, let us
- 5:25Speaker 1: remember to keep the commandments of God, or our garments
- 5:29Speaker 1: shall be rent by our brethren, and we be cast
- 5:32Speaker 1: into prison, or be sold or be slain. YEA. Let
- 5:35Speaker 1: us preserve our liberty as a remnant of Joseph. YEA,
- 5:39Speaker 1: let us remember the words of Jacob before his death.
- 5:42Speaker 1: For behold, he saw that a part of the remnant
- 5:44Speaker 1: of the coat of Joseph was preserved and had not decayed.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And he said, even as this remnant of garment of
- 5:52Speaker 1: my son hath been preserved, so shall a remnant of
- 5:56Speaker 1: the seed of my son be preserved by the hand
- 5:58Speaker 1: of God and be taken unto himself, while the remainder
- 6:02Speaker 1: of the seed of Joseph shall perish, even as the
- 6:05Speaker 1: remnant of his garment. Now behold, this giveth my soul sorrow. Nevertheless,
- 6:10Speaker 1: my soul hath joy in my son because of that
- 6:13Speaker 1: part of his seed which shall be taken unto God.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Now behold, this was the language of Jacob. And now
- 6:20Speaker 1: who knoweth but that the remnant of the seed of
- 6:22Speaker 1: Joseph which shall perish as his garment, are those who
- 6:25Speaker 1: have dissented from us? Yea, And even it shall be
- 6:29Speaker 1: ourselves if we do not stand fast in the faith
- 6:32Speaker 1: of Christ. And now it came to pass that when
- 6:35Speaker 1: Moroni had said these words, he went forth, and also
- 6:39Speaker 1: sent forth in all the parts of the land where
- 6:42Speaker 1: there were dissensions, and gathered together all the people who
- 6:45Speaker 1: were desirous to maintain their liberty to stand against Amlachiah
- 6:49Speaker 1: and those who had dissented, who were called Amalachiaides. And
- 6:54Speaker 1: it came to pass that when Amalachiah saw that the
- 6:56Speaker 1: people of Moroni were more numerous than the Amalachia, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: he also saw that his people were doubtful concerning the
- 7:04Speaker 1: justice of the cause in which they had undertaken. Therefore,
- 7:08Speaker 1: fearing that he should not gain the point, he took
- 7:10Speaker 1: those of his people who would and departed into the
- 7:13Speaker 1: land of Nephi. Now Maroni thought it was not expedient
- 7:17Speaker 1: that the Lamanites should have any more strength. Therefore he
- 7:21Speaker 1: thought to cut off the people of Amalachia, or to
- 7:24Speaker 1: take them and bring them back and put a Malachia
- 7:26Speaker 1: to death. Yea, for he knew that he would stir
- 7:29Speaker 1: up the Lamanites to anger against them and cause them
- 7:33Speaker 1: to come to battle against them. And this he knew
- 7:36Speaker 1: that a Malachia would do that he might obtain his purposes. Therefore,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Maronai thought it was expedient that he should take his armies,
- 7:43Speaker 1: who had gathered themselves together and armed themselves and entered
- 7:48Speaker 1: into a covenant to keep the peace. And it came
- 7:51Speaker 1: to pass that he took his army and marched out
- 7:54Speaker 1: with his tents into the wilderness to cut off the
- 7:57Speaker 1: course of Amalachia in the wilderness. And it came to
- 8:00Speaker 1: pass that he did according to his desires, and marched
- 8:04Speaker 1: forth into the wilderness and headed the armies of a Malachia.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And it came to pass that a Malachia fled with
- 8:10Speaker 1: a small number of his men, and the remainder were
- 8:12Speaker 1: delivered up into the hands of Moroni, and were taken
- 8:15Speaker 1: back into the land of Zarahimla now Moronia. Being a
- 8:19Speaker 1: man who was appointed by the chief judges and the
- 8:22Speaker 1: voice of the people, therefore he had power, according to
- 8:25Speaker 1: his will, with the armies of the Nephites, to establish
- 8:28Speaker 1: and to exercise authority over them. And it came to
- 8:31Speaker 1: pass at whomsoever of the Amalachiaites that would not enter
- 8:35Speaker 1: into a covenant to support the cause of freedom, that
- 8:38Speaker 1: they might maintain a free government, he caused to be
- 8:42Speaker 1: put to death. And there were but few who denied
- 8:45Speaker 1: the covenant of freedom. And it came to pass also
- 8:48Speaker 1: that he caused the title of liberty to be hoisted
- 8:51Speaker 1: upon every tower which was in all the land which
- 8:54Speaker 1: was possessed by the Nephites, and Thus Moronai planted the
- 8:58Speaker 1: standard of liberty among the Nephies, and they began to
- 9:01Speaker 1: have peace again in the land. And thus they did
- 9:04Speaker 1: maintain peace in the land until nearly the end of
- 9:07Speaker 1: the nineteenth year of the reign of the Judges, and
- 9:10Speaker 1: Helamann and the high priests did also maintain order in
- 9:14Speaker 1: the church. Yea, even for the space of four years
- 9:17Speaker 1: did they have much peace and rejoicing in the church.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And it came to pass that there were many who
- 9:23Speaker 1: died firmly believing that their souls were redeemed by the
- 9:26Speaker 1: Lord Jesus Christ. Thus they went out of the world rejoicing.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And there were some who died with fevers, which some
- 9:34Speaker 1: seasons of the year were very frequent in the land,
- 9:37Speaker 1: but not so much so with fevers, because of the
- 9:39Speaker 1: excellent qualities of the many plants and roots, which God
- 9:42Speaker 1: had prepared to remove the cause of diseases to which
- 9:45Speaker 1: men were subject by the nature of the climate. But
- 9:48Speaker 1: there were many who died with old age. And those
- 9:51Speaker 1: who died in the faith of Christ are happy in Him,
- 9:55Speaker 1: as we must needs suppose Alma chapter forty seven. Now
- 10:04Speaker 1: we will return in our record to Amalachia and those
- 10:07Speaker 1: who had fled with him into the wilderness. For behold,
- 10:10Speaker 1: he had taken those who went with him and went
- 10:12Speaker 1: up in the land of Nephi among the Lamanites, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: did stir up the Lamanites to anger against the people
- 10:18Speaker 1: of Nephi. Insomuch that the king of the Lamanites sent
- 10:21Speaker 1: a proclamation throughout all his land among all his people,
- 10:24Speaker 1: that they should gather themselves together again to go to
- 10:27Speaker 1: battle against the Nephites. And it came to pass that
- 10:31Speaker 1: when the proclamation had gone forth among them, they were
- 10:34Speaker 1: exceedingly afraid. Yea, they feared to displease the king, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: they also feared to go to battle against the Nephites,
- 10:41Speaker 1: lest they should lose their lives. And it came to
- 10:44Speaker 1: pass that they would not, or the more part of them,
- 10:47Speaker 1: would not obey the commandments of the king. And now
- 10:50Speaker 1: it came to pass that the king was wroth because
- 10:52Speaker 1: of their disobedience. Therefore he gave a Malachia the command
- 10:55Speaker 1: of that part of his army which was obedient unto
- 10:58Speaker 1: his commands, and him that he should go forth and
- 11:01Speaker 1: compel them to arms. Now behold, this was the desire
- 11:06Speaker 1: of Amalachia, for he being a very subtle man to
- 11:09Speaker 1: do evil. Therefore he laid the plans in his heart
- 11:11Speaker 1: to dethrone the king of the Lamanites. And now he
- 11:15Speaker 1: had got the command of those parts of the Lamanites
- 11:17Speaker 1: who were in favor of the king, and he sought
- 11:20Speaker 1: to gain favor of those who were not obedient. Therefore
- 11:23Speaker 1: he went forward to the place which was called Oneida.
- 11:26Speaker 1: For thither had all the Lamanites fled, for they discovered
- 11:29Speaker 1: the army coming, and supposing that they were coming to
- 11:32Speaker 1: destroy them. Therefore they fled to Oneida, to the place
- 11:35Speaker 1: of arms. And they had appointed a man to be
- 11:39Speaker 1: a king and a leader over them, being fixed in
- 11:41Speaker 1: their minds with a determined resolution that they would not
- 11:44Speaker 1: be subjected to go against the Nephites. And it came
- 11:48Speaker 1: to pass that they had gathered themselves together upon the
- 11:51Speaker 1: top of the mount which was called Antipas, in preparation
- 11:54Speaker 1: to battle. Now it was not a Malachi's intention to
- 11:57Speaker 1: give them battle according to the commandments of the Suk king.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But behold, it was his intention to gain favor with
- 12:03Speaker 1: the armies of the Lamanites, that he might place himself
- 12:06Speaker 1: at their head and dethrone the king and take possession
- 12:09Speaker 1: of the kingdom, and behold, it came to pass that
- 12:12Speaker 1: he caused his army to pitch their tents in the
- 12:14Speaker 1: valley which was near the Mount Antipas, and it came
- 12:17Speaker 1: to pass that when it was night, he sent a
- 12:20Speaker 1: secret embassy into the Mount Antipas, desiring that the leader
- 12:23Speaker 1: of those who were upon the mount, whose name was Lehontai,
- 12:28Speaker 1: that he should come down to the foot of the mount,
- 12:30Speaker 1: for he desired to speak with him. And it came
- 12:33Speaker 1: to pass that when le Hanti received the message, he
- 12:36Speaker 1: durst not go down to the foot of the mount.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And it came to pass that a malachia sent again
- 12:42Speaker 1: the second time, desiring him to come down, and it
- 12:46Speaker 1: came to pass that le Hantai would not, and he
- 12:49Speaker 1: sent again the third time, and it came to pass
- 12:52Speaker 1: that when a Malachia found that he could not get
- 12:54Speaker 1: Lehntai to come down off from the mount, he went
- 12:58Speaker 1: up into the mount nearly to La Hanta camp, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: he sent again the fourth time his message unto le Hantai,
- 13:04Speaker 1: desiring that he would come down, and that he would
- 13:07Speaker 1: bring his guards with him. And it came to pass
- 13:10Speaker 1: that when le Hanti had come down with his guards
- 13:12Speaker 1: to a Malachia that Amlakiya desired him to come down
- 13:16Speaker 1: with his army in the night time and surround those
- 13:19Speaker 1: men in their camps over whom the king had given
- 13:21Speaker 1: him command, and that he would deliver them up into
- 13:24Speaker 1: le Hanta's hands if he would make him a Malakia,
- 13:28Speaker 1: a second leader over the whole army. And it came
- 13:31Speaker 1: to pass that le Hantai came down with his men
- 13:34Speaker 1: and surrounded the men of Amalachia, so that before they
- 13:37Speaker 1: awoke at the dawn of day, they were surrounded by
- 13:40Speaker 1: the armies of Lahntai. And it came to pass that
- 13:43Speaker 1: when they saw that they were surrounded, they pled with
- 13:45Speaker 1: a Malachia that he would suffer them to fall in
- 13:48Speaker 1: with their brethren, that they might not be destroyed. Now,
- 13:51Speaker 1: this was the very thing which Amalachia desired, and it
- 13:55Speaker 1: came to pass that he delivered his men contrary to
- 13:57Speaker 1: the commands of the king. This was the thing that
- 14:00Speaker 1: a Malachia desired, that he might accomplish his designs in
- 14:04Speaker 1: dethroning the king. Now, it was the custom among the
- 14:07Speaker 1: Lamanites if their chief leader was killed, to appoint the
- 14:10Speaker 1: second leader to be their chief leader, and it came
- 14:13Speaker 1: to pass that a Malachia caused that one of his
- 14:16Speaker 1: servants should administer poison by degrees to Lehantai that he died.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Now when le Hanti was dead, the Lamanites appointed a
- 14:25Speaker 1: Malakia to be their leader and their chief commander. And
- 14:29Speaker 1: it came to pass that a Malachia marched with his armies,
- 14:32Speaker 1: for he had gained his desires to the land of Nephi,
- 14:34Speaker 1: to the city of Nephi, which was the chief city.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And the king came out to meet him with his guards,
- 14:41Speaker 1: for he supposed that a Malakia had fulfilled his commands,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and that a Malakia had gathered together so great an
- 14:47Speaker 1: army to go against the Nephites to battle. But behold,
- 14:51Speaker 1: as the king came out to meet him, a Malachia
- 14:54Speaker 1: caused that his servants should go forth to meet the king,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and they went and bowed themselves before the king, as
- 15:01Speaker 1: if to reverence him because of his greatness. And it
- 15:04Speaker 1: came to pass that the king put forth his hand
- 15:06Speaker 1: to raise them, as was the custom with the Lamanites,
- 15:09Speaker 1: as a token of peace, which custom they had taken
- 15:12Speaker 1: from the Nephites. And it came to pass that when
- 15:16Speaker 1: he had raised the first from the ground. Behold, he
- 15:19Speaker 1: stabbed the king to the heart, and he fell to
- 15:21Speaker 1: the earth. Now the servants of the king fled, and
- 15:25Speaker 1: the servants of a Malachia raised a cry, saying, behold,
- 15:28Speaker 1: the servants of the king has stabbed him to the heart,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and he has fallen, and they have fled. Behold, come
- 15:33Speaker 1: and see. And it came to pass that a Malachia
- 15:37Speaker 1: commanded that his army should march forth and see what
- 15:39Speaker 1: had happened to the king. And when they had come
- 15:42Speaker 1: to the spot and found the king lying in his gore,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and Malachia pretended to be wroth, and said, whosoever loved
- 15:49Speaker 1: the king, let him go forth and pursue his servants,
- 15:52Speaker 1: that they may be slain. And it came to pass
- 15:55Speaker 1: that all they who loved the king, when they heard
- 15:58Speaker 1: these words, came forth and pursued after the servants of
- 16:00Speaker 1: the king. Now, when the servants of the king saw
- 16:03Speaker 1: an army pursuing after them, they were frightened again and
- 16:07Speaker 1: fled into the wilderness and came over into the land
- 16:09Speaker 1: of Zarahemla and joined the people of Ammon. And the
- 16:13Speaker 1: army which pursued after them returned, having pursued after them
- 16:17Speaker 1: in vain. And thus a Malachia, by his fraud, gained
- 16:20Speaker 1: the hearts of the people. And it came to pass
- 16:23Speaker 1: on the morrow he entered the city Nephy with his
- 16:26Speaker 1: armies and took possession of the city. And now it
- 16:29Speaker 1: came to pass that the Queen, when she had heard
- 16:31Speaker 1: that the king was slain for Amalachia, had sent an
- 16:34Speaker 1: embassy to the Queen informing her that the king had
- 16:37Speaker 1: been slain by his servants, that he had pursued them
- 16:40Speaker 1: with his army, but it was in vain and they
- 16:42Speaker 1: had made their escape. Therefore, when the Queen had received
- 16:46Speaker 1: this message, she sent unto Amalachia, desiring him that he
- 16:50Speaker 1: would spare the people of the city. And she also
- 16:53Speaker 1: desired him that he should come in unto her. And
- 16:56Speaker 1: she also desired him that he should bring witnesses with
- 16:59Speaker 1: him to testify concerning the death of the king. And
- 17:03Speaker 1: it came to pass that a Malachia took the same
- 17:05Speaker 1: servant who slew the king and all them who were
- 17:07Speaker 1: with him, and went in unto the Queen unto the
- 17:10Speaker 1: place where she sat, and they all testified unto her
- 17:13Speaker 1: that the king was slain by his own servants, and
- 17:16Speaker 1: they said, also they have fled, does not this testify
- 17:19Speaker 1: against them? And thus they satisfied the queen concerning the
- 17:23Speaker 1: death of the king. And it came to pass that
- 17:26Speaker 1: a Malachiah sought the favor of the queen and took
- 17:29Speaker 1: her unto him to wife. And thus, by his fraud
- 17:33Speaker 1: and by the assistance of his cunning servants, he obtained
- 17:37Speaker 1: the kingdom Yea. He was acknowledged king throughout all the
- 17:40Speaker 1: land among all the people of the Lamanites, who were
- 17:43Speaker 1: composed of the Lamanites and the Lemuelites, and the Ishmaelites,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and all the dissenters of the Nephites from the reign
- 17:49Speaker 1: of Nephi down to the present time. Now these dissenters
- 17:53Speaker 1: having the same instruction, then the same information of the Nephites, Yea,
- 17:57Speaker 1: having been instructed in the same knowledge of the Lord. Nevertheless,
- 18:00Speaker 1: it is strange to relate. Not long after their dissensions
- 18:04Speaker 1: they became more hardened and impenitent, and more wild, wicked
- 18:09Speaker 1: and ferocious than the Lamanites, drinking in with the traditions
- 18:12Speaker 1: of the Lamanites, giving way to indolence in all manner
- 18:16Speaker 1: of lashiviousness Yea entirely forgetting the Lord their God Alma
- 18:22Speaker 1: chapter forty eight. And now it came to pass that
- 18:26Speaker 1: as soon as a Malachiah had obtained the kingdom, he
- 18:29Speaker 1: began to inspire the hearts of the Lamanites against the
- 18:32Speaker 1: people of Nephi Yea. He did appoint men to speak
- 18:35Speaker 1: unto the Lamanites from their towers against the Nephites, and
- 18:40Speaker 1: thus he did inspire their hearts against the Nephites. Insomuch
- 18:43Speaker 1: that in the latter end of the nineteenth year of
- 18:45Speaker 1: the reign of the Judges, he having accomplished his designs.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Thus far Yea having been made king over the Lamanites,
- 18:53Speaker 1: he sought also to reign over all the land Yea
- 18:56Speaker 1: and all the people who were in the land, the
- 18:59Speaker 1: Nephytes as well as the Lamanites. Therefore he had accomplished
- 19:03Speaker 1: his design, for he had hardened the hearts of the
- 19:05Speaker 1: Lamanites and blinded their minds and stirred them up to anger.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Insomuch that he had gathered together a numerous host to
- 19:12Speaker 1: go to battle against the Nephites. For he was determined,
- 19:15Speaker 1: because of the greatness of the number of his people
- 19:18Speaker 1: to overpower the Nephites and to bring them into bondage.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And thus he did appoint chief captains of the Zoramites,
- 19:25Speaker 1: they being the most acquainted with the strength of the
- 19:28Speaker 1: Nephites and their places of resort, and the weakest parts
- 19:32Speaker 1: of their cities. Therefore he appointed them to be chief
- 19:35Speaker 1: captains over his armies. And it came to pass that
- 19:38Speaker 1: they took their camp and moved forth toward the land
- 19:41Speaker 1: of Zarahemla in the wilderness. Now it came to pass
- 19:45Speaker 1: that while a Malachia had thus been obtaining power by
- 19:49Speaker 1: fraud and deceit, Morona, on the other hand, had been
- 19:51Speaker 1: preparing the minds of the people to be faithful unto
- 19:54Speaker 1: the Lord their god Yea. He had been strengthening the
- 19:58Speaker 1: armies of the Nephites, and erected in small forts or
- 20:01Speaker 1: places of resort, throwing up banks of earth round about
- 20:04Speaker 1: to enclose his armies, and also building walls of stone
- 20:08Speaker 1: to encircle them about round about their cities and the
- 20:11Speaker 1: borders of their lands Yea, all round about the land,
- 20:14Speaker 1: and in their weakest fortifications he did place the greater
- 20:17Speaker 1: number of men, And thus he did fortify and strengthen
- 20:21Speaker 1: the land which was possessed by the Nephites. And thus
- 20:25Speaker 1: he was preparing to support their liberty, their lands, their wives,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and their children, and their peace, that they might live
- 20:32Speaker 1: unto the Lord, their God, and that they might maintain
- 20:35Speaker 1: that which was called by their enemies the cause of Christians.
- 20:39Speaker 1: And Marona was a strong and a mighty man. He
- 20:42Speaker 1: was a man of a perfect understanding, yea. A man
- 20:44Speaker 1: that did not delight in bloodshed, a man whose soul
- 20:47Speaker 1: did joy in the liberty and the freedom of his
- 20:49Speaker 1: country and his brethren from bondage and slavery. Yea. A
- 20:53Speaker 1: man whose heart did swell with thanksgiving to his God
- 20:56Speaker 1: for the many privileges and blessings which he bestowed upon
- 21:00Speaker 1: his people. A man who did labor exceedingly for the
- 21:03Speaker 1: welfare and safety of his people. Yea. And he was
- 21:06Speaker 1: a man who was firm in the faith of Christ.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And he had sworn with an oath to defend his people,
- 21:12Speaker 1: his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to
- 21:15Speaker 1: the loss of his blood. Now, the Nephites were taught
- 21:18Speaker 1: to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding
- 21:21Speaker 1: of blood if it were necessary. Yea. And they were
- 21:24Speaker 1: also taught never to give an offense, yea, and never
- 21:28Speaker 1: to raise the sword, except it were against an enemy.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Accept it were to preserve their lives. And this was
- 21:35Speaker 1: their faith, that by so doing God would prosper them
- 21:38Speaker 1: in the land. Or in other words, if they were
- 21:40Speaker 1: faithful in keeping the commandments of God, that He would
- 21:43Speaker 1: prosper them in the land. Yea. Warned them to flee
- 21:46Speaker 1: or to prepare for war according to their danger, and
- 21:50Speaker 1: also that God would make it known unto them whither
- 21:53Speaker 1: they should go to defend themselves against their enemies, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: by so doing the Lord would deliver them. And this
- 21:59Speaker 1: was the faith of Morona, and his heart did glory
- 22:02Speaker 1: in it, not in the shedding of blood, but in
- 22:05Speaker 1: doing good, in preserving his people yea, in keeping the
- 22:09Speaker 1: commandments of God, yea, and resisting iniquity, yea. Verily, verily,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I say unto you. If all men had been, and were,
- 22:16Speaker 1: and ever would be likened to Moronai, behold, the very
- 22:20Speaker 1: powers of Hell would have been shaken forever. Yea. The
- 22:23Speaker 1: devil would never have power over the hearts of the
- 22:26Speaker 1: children of men. Behold, he was a man likened to Amon,
- 22:29Speaker 1: the son of Mosiah. Yea. And even the other sons
- 22:31Speaker 1: of Mosiah Yea, and also Almand his sons, for they
- 22:36Speaker 1: were all men of God. Now behold, Helimann and his
- 22:39Speaker 1: brethren were no less serviceable unto the people than was Moronai.
- 22:43Speaker 1: For they did preach the word of God, and they
- 22:45Speaker 1: did baptize unto repentance all men whosoever would hearken unto
- 22:48Speaker 1: their words. And thus they went forth, and the people
- 22:52Speaker 1: did humble themselves because of their words, insomuch that they
- 22:56Speaker 1: were highly favored of the Lord. And thus they were
- 22:58Speaker 1: free from wars and contents among themselves Yea, even for
- 23:02Speaker 1: the space of four years. But as I have said,
- 23:05Speaker 1: in the latter end of the nineteenth year, Yea, notwithstanding
- 23:08Speaker 1: their peace amongst themselves, they were compelled reluctantly to contend
- 23:12Speaker 1: with their brethren, the Lamanites. Yea. And in fine, their
- 23:16Speaker 1: wars never did cease for the space of many years
- 23:19Speaker 1: with the Lamanites, notwithstanding their much reluctance. Now they were
- 23:24Speaker 1: sorry to take up arms against the Lamanites, because they
- 23:27Speaker 1: did not delight in the shedding of blood, Yea. And
- 23:30Speaker 1: this was not all they were sorry to be the
- 23:32Speaker 1: means of sending so many of their brethren out of
- 23:35Speaker 1: this world into an eternal world, unprepared to meet their God. Nevertheless,
- 23:41Speaker 1: they could not suffer to lay down their lives that
- 23:43Speaker 1: their wives and their children should be massacreed by the
- 23:46Speaker 1: barbarous cruelty of those who were once their brethren Yea,
- 23:50Speaker 1: and had dissented from their church and had left them,
- 23:53Speaker 1: and had gone to destroy them by joining the Lamanites. Yea,
- 23:57Speaker 1: they could not bear that their brethren should rejoice over
- 24:00Speaker 1: the blood of the Nephites, so long as there were
- 24:03Speaker 1: any who should keep the commandments of God. For the
- 24:05Speaker 1: promise of the Lord was if they should keep his commandments,
- 24:09Speaker 1: they would prosper in the land and of Alma, chapters
- 24:13Speaker 1: forty six through forty eight.
