- 0:29Speaker 1: What's up, everybody.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:32Speaker 2: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:35Speaker 2: in the world, thirteen years strong, and we got a
- 0:38Speaker 2: great discussion coming your way here on Table Talk as
- 0:42Speaker 2: we dive into the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:44Speaker 1: What an NFL draft it was.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're going to be getting into not only the Eagles
- 0:48Speaker 2: draft picks, but you know where the direction of this
- 0:50Speaker 2: Eagles team is going into joining us, We've got one
- 0:54Speaker 2: of our favorite guys, Brendan Deeg from the Score is
- 0:57Speaker 2: fantastic love following his content, especially over on the Twitter
- 1:01Speaker 2: slash X my friend, how are you?
- 1:03Speaker 1: And thanks so much for jumping on board.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I'm du all, thanks having me on the show. Yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 3: feel with my head's turning into a football here. HAPPYFL
- 1:10Speaker 3: draft seasons over, Yes, grind but uh yeah, thanks for
- 1:13Speaker 3: having me man.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I'm excited to talk.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Paul.
- 1:15Speaker 2: It's great to have you again. And I think what's
- 1:18Speaker 2: where I was hoping we could go with the discussion. First, Brendan,
- 1:21Speaker 2: is before we get into the talent that the Eagles drafted.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I wanted to first reference a tweet of yours from
- 1:29Speaker 2: just a few days ago. You tweeted out the Eagles
- 1:32Speaker 2: drafting Eli Stowers and then trading for Jonathan Grenard in
- 1:36Speaker 2: the span of eight minutes is peak Howie Roseman. I
- 1:40Speaker 2: saw that tweet and it really made me reflect just
- 1:45Speaker 2: on this Eagles front office on the type of GM
- 1:49Speaker 2: that Howie Roseman is. Your tweet really just shed light
- 1:53Speaker 2: on the kind of draft you know that this was
- 1:55Speaker 2: for the Eagles, but also the manner in which Howie
- 1:58Speaker 2: Roseman and the front office operates from an overall perspective,
- 2:02Speaker 2: how they go about doing business. I'm wondering, can you
- 2:05Speaker 2: give me your thoughts on this notion and how the
- 2:09Speaker 2: Eagles just they really do it differently than other teams.
- 2:12Speaker 2: What are your thoughts here?
- 2:14Speaker 3: You know what that sequence. I don't think it was
- 2:16Speaker 3: the exit. They didn't get the exact same level of
- 2:18Speaker 3: players per se. But do you remember the twenty twenty
- 2:21Speaker 3: two draft when they drafted Jordan Davis and traded for
- 2:23Speaker 3: A J. Brown kind of in like that that same
- 2:25Speaker 3: It was like ten to fifteen minutes. Yeah, it was
- 2:28Speaker 3: like a quick back to back And I love Jordan
- 2:30Speaker 3: Davis that draft. He's one of my favorite players and
- 2:31Speaker 3: a J. Brown one of my favorite players not on
- 2:33Speaker 3: the Philadelphi Eagles at that point, so it was kind
- 2:36Speaker 3: of it kind of reminded me of a little bit again,
- 2:38Speaker 3: not the same caliber of players, but just your general question,
- 2:41Speaker 3: Like the reason they could do this is ownership. And
- 2:44Speaker 3: I've always kind of gone back this or around draft time,
- 2:47Speaker 3: is the Eagles are able to pay up contracts and
- 2:51Speaker 3: money better than any other team in the NFL. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 3: there's other teams that can kind of match it, but
- 2:55Speaker 3: Jeffrey Leary is a forward thinking owner. He gives Howie
- 2:58Speaker 3: Rosemen the Lee way. Isn't on a short leash a
- 3:02Speaker 3: general manager. A lot of general managers in the NFL
- 3:04Speaker 3: are kind of in this in this mindset where they
- 3:06Speaker 3: are drafting for their jobs, trading for their jobs and whatnot.
- 3:09Speaker 3: How Roseman is like, we know, how Roseman has probably
- 3:12Speaker 3: the longest leash. Maybe Eric to Costa, sorry Eric to Costa.
- 3:16Speaker 3: The Baltimore Ravens is kind of in a similar pope.
- 3:18Speaker 3: But these when you have kind of that leeway of ownership,
- 3:22Speaker 3: willing to spend money and not having to kind of
- 3:26Speaker 3: trade for your job or fight for your job at
- 3:27Speaker 3: every grueling moment or any growing part of the NFL calendar,
- 3:30Speaker 3: you're able to do things differently, and I think the
- 3:33Speaker 3: Grenard things a perfect example. There's probably so many teams
- 3:36Speaker 3: that wanted to trade for John and the Gernard during
- 3:39Speaker 3: the draft process, but they weren't willing to dish out
- 3:41Speaker 3: one hundred million dollar contract in April. Like, not many
- 3:43Speaker 3: teams are willing to do that. It kind of goes
- 3:45Speaker 3: back to when they did with aj Brown. They signed
- 3:46Speaker 3: them to that massive deal. Not many teams are willing
- 3:49Speaker 3: to do that. They already have their book set, they
- 3:50Speaker 3: already have their money allocated.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Now you could say that that money was supposed to
- 3:55Speaker 3: get allocated to Jalen Phillips, which is probably true because
- 4:00Speaker 3: the Eagles were definitely in the Jalo and Phillips market
- 4:02Speaker 3: during free agency.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I knew.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I went into this offseason thinking that the Eagles had
- 4:07Speaker 3: a sum of cash set for an edgeresher. They wanted
- 4:10Speaker 3: to bring back Jao and Phillis. They didn't get them, so
- 4:12Speaker 3: they pivoted and they had that money available. But again,
- 4:15Speaker 3: like other teams, just aren't willing to part with two
- 4:17Speaker 3: third round picks and fifty million dollars guaranteed on in
- 4:21Speaker 3: the end of April.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Friday or Saturday, whatever it was.
- 4:24Speaker 3: It's just many teams are not able to do that
- 4:26Speaker 3: from ownership and general Maners is not willing to do that,
- 4:29Speaker 3: and how Rosman is one of the few that is
- 4:30Speaker 3: able to do that.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a great response in terms of
- 4:33Speaker 2: the ownership, and it just it never ceases to amaze
- 4:36Speaker 2: me that more NFL teams don't actually dive into what
- 4:41Speaker 2: the Eagles do, if they don't try to rep I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 2: some teams maybe try to replicate here and there, but
- 4:46Speaker 2: to go all in and do what the Philadelphia Eagles
- 4:49Speaker 2: do Brendan, It's like, I'm amazed that more teams don't
- 4:53Speaker 2: do this. I mean, I guess there's gambles. I guess
- 4:55Speaker 2: there's chances with some of these moves, of course that
- 4:57Speaker 2: how he makes. But this team is a relevant team
- 5:02Speaker 2: in the NFL and then the NFC over and over
- 5:04Speaker 2: and over year after year. I would imagine other teams
- 5:07Speaker 2: would want that, but they just.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Don't do it.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It's fire I remember I think it was. I think
- 5:13Speaker 3: it was around after the twenty twenty two drafts. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: went in kind of in depth into the money aspect
- 5:17Speaker 3: more of the NFL kind of dis and digging. Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 3: a lot of it's like the the owners need to
- 5:22Speaker 3: have money available like in an scirl account for cash
- 5:24Speaker 3: for these for these contracts, and if they don't have that,
- 5:27Speaker 3: then they can't give the guaranteed money. So like a
- 5:29Speaker 3: lot like it comes down to just being frugal or not.
- 5:32Speaker 3: And we see the Cinctawti Bengals, for instance, all the
- 5:34Speaker 3: time like they're they're a great example of the complete
- 5:36Speaker 3: opposite of this.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Now, they did trade a tenth overall pick.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Or uh for Dexter Lawrence and they did pay money,
- 5:44Speaker 3: so maybe they're kind of thinking otherwise.
- 5:45Speaker 4: But yeah, at the end of the day, it literally
- 5:47Speaker 4: all comes down.
- 5:47Speaker 3: To how much is the owner willing to spend and
- 5:49Speaker 3: how much is how much future draft capital they willing
- 5:51Speaker 3: and give up and whatnot, because the other a draft
- 5:54Speaker 3: capital is cheap contracts, right, That's how these teams look
- 5:56Speaker 3: at it.
- 5:56Speaker 4: They look at a third round as a cheap asset.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So instead of using a chebasset, Eagles are taking that
- 6:02Speaker 3: asset and putting it towards a veteran player that is
- 6:05Speaker 3: twenty nine years old and he's going to get amount
- 6:06Speaker 3: of money. So that a lot of the decision making
- 6:09Speaker 3: when it comes to trading those picks and Silon Scotch
- 6:11Speaker 3: comes down to just being cheaper enough them.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go, there you go.
- 6:15Speaker 2: All right, Well, let's get into some of the talent
- 6:17Speaker 2: that the Eagles just drafted first and foremost. We got
- 6:20Speaker 2: to start with wide receiver Makaile Lemon straight up. I mean,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I love the pick. So many folks loved this pick
- 6:26Speaker 2: and moving up to get him at number twenty. I
- 6:30Speaker 2: spoke with our good friend of the podcast, one of
- 6:32Speaker 2: the best scouting guys in the business, Matt Waldman from
- 6:35Speaker 2: Rookie Scouting Portfolio, about McKay Lemon, just a couple of
- 6:38Speaker 2: weeks ago prior to the draft, and it was his
- 6:41Speaker 2: belief that outside of Carnell Tait, Lemon was really the
- 6:44Speaker 2: real deal from his analysis the scouting that he had
- 6:47Speaker 2: done on Lemon. And I mean, he's got a ton
- 6:50Speaker 2: of stats. I know you recently tweeted those out a
- 6:54Speaker 2: ton of stats to back up him being picked at
- 6:56Speaker 2: number twenty Eagles moving up in the first round. For
- 6:59Speaker 2: those who may be living under a rock, but I'm wondering,
- 7:02Speaker 2: what what do you like most about mackay Lemon and
- 7:05Speaker 2: how do you think his style play is really going
- 7:07Speaker 2: to translate over to the NFL and the Eagles offense,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Which I mean, this might be a tough question for
- 7:12Speaker 2: you because a lot of us are waiting to see
- 7:14Speaker 2: what kind of offense is going to be run by
- 7:15Speaker 2: Sean Mannions. So I don't know, how do you think,
- 7:18Speaker 2: how do you think Lemon's going to transfer his skills
- 7:20Speaker 2: and what he's able to do over to the NFL level.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, So I to be fully like honest, I didn't
- 7:27Speaker 3: have mkayle Lemon on the Eagles radar. Yeah, let against
- 7:30Speaker 3: the draft because I didn't think he was going to
- 7:32Speaker 3: fall this far. I had him as a top fifteen player.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I thought him as a second best wide receiver in
- 7:37Speaker 3: the class. I remember when we were working at the
- 7:39Speaker 3: office on Thursday night, like one of the guys I
- 7:42Speaker 3: was working with was like Mkaile Levion's falling like the Eagles.
- 7:44Speaker 4: He saw an Eagles range and it kind of clicked
- 7:46Speaker 4: to me.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Was it was before the Blake Miller picker or starts
- 7:49Speaker 3: after the room in being picked with the Bucks. It
- 7:51Speaker 3: kind of clicked into me, like he is he's in
- 7:53Speaker 3: their range and both low and behold he gets to twenty,
- 7:57Speaker 3: they trade up. I didn't still believe that he was
- 8:00Speaker 3: gonna be that was gonna be the pick. When they
- 8:01Speaker 3: chewed up, I thought they were going to go maxi
- 8:03Speaker 3: on a chore for the move up. But they took
- 8:06Speaker 3: Makayle Lemon and he's like I can like some of
- 8:09Speaker 3: the stats that I pulled up throughout the last couple days.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Two point eight percent career drop rate. That's first among
- 8:14Speaker 3: all draft, all dry wide receivers. He led all college
- 8:16Speaker 3: football and first down catches last year with fifty. This
- 8:18Speaker 3: one I really like. He joins Jamar Chase, Jalen Watalll,
- 8:21Speaker 3: DeVonta Smith, Ceedee Lamb, and Jackson Smith A Jigba as
- 8:24Speaker 3: the only first round wide receivers since twenty twenty with
- 8:26Speaker 3: a three plus three point zero plus career yards per
- 8:29Speaker 3: rout run.
- 8:29Speaker 4: So that's extremely productive. Yeah, in an awesome year last year.
- 8:32Speaker 3: If you want to go watch him, good tape, watch
- 8:34Speaker 3: the Iowa game against like that, against that defense, he
- 8:38Speaker 3: toore them apart and get like one hundred and fifty
- 8:39Speaker 3: three yards ten catches in a touchdown. Illinois game is
- 8:42Speaker 3: also really good tape. Those are the two kind of
- 8:44Speaker 3: utily focused on when I was studying pre draft. He
- 8:47Speaker 3: fights for every single yard, like there's so many just
- 8:49Speaker 3: like yards that that are Like he doesn't leave on
- 8:53Speaker 3: the table. He is the anti Tyler Lockett, if that
- 8:55Speaker 3: makes sense. He goes and gets every single yard possible.
- 8:59Speaker 3: He's physical, he plays above above his sized quarterbacks. On
- 9:02Speaker 3: you could tell you could tell Lincoln Riley and that
- 9:05Speaker 3: whole offense trusted him to throwing the tight windows and
- 9:08Speaker 3: wherever they could. If they could put the ball near him,
- 9:10Speaker 3: He's going to get it. He's strong with like I said,
- 9:12Speaker 3: the career drop rate is great and you can see
- 9:14Speaker 3: it on film. He doesn't nothing touches the ground he
- 9:18Speaker 3: gets compared to a mon rossing Brown a lot. And
- 9:20Speaker 3: I'm not like big into like cups, so like the
- 9:24Speaker 3: where the player went like Monroe went to USC, it's
- 9:26Speaker 3: kind of lazy. But in this, in this scenario, I
- 9:29Speaker 3: do think it's real. Like they do play very similar
- 9:32Speaker 3: a mon ros a tad bigger, but I do think
- 9:35Speaker 3: like they have very similar skill sets. They like McKay
- 9:38Speaker 3: Lemon played defensive back in high school, so he does
- 9:43Speaker 3: say that really helped him on WS here and feeling
- 9:47Speaker 3: out zones and whatnot, Like he was great against zone coverage.
- 9:49Speaker 3: He led the yards per out run against zone a
- 9:51Speaker 3: coveraget of all wide receivers as well. One of my
- 9:54Speaker 3: favorite parts about kay Lemon is I think he's a
- 9:56Speaker 3: really good kid and I think he's gonna work really hard,
- 9:58Speaker 3: and I don't think you're getting the the aspect of
- 10:00Speaker 3: a wide receiver as well. There was a there was
- 10:04Speaker 3: a scout USC scout or as or a Los Angeles scout,
- 10:08Speaker 3: so because that's where he grew up and that's where
- 10:09Speaker 3: he's from, he went to USC. That was his dream school.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He said he was the big the best competitor, and
- 10:13Speaker 3: hardest worker he's ever seen. He just he has those
- 10:16Speaker 3: traits where like he lives breeze guys football. So yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 3: I'm super excited. He did play over over seventy four
- 10:22Speaker 3: percent of his snaps from the slot last year, so
- 10:25Speaker 3: that's where I'm assuming he's going to start on the
- 10:28Speaker 3: Eagles offense. And I actually do really like that fit
- 10:30Speaker 3: because I've always loved the belief that DeVonta Smith's better
- 10:33Speaker 3: on the outside. Yea, I think he's a better outside
- 10:35Speaker 3: stretched the field, He's like he's a smaller receiver, but
- 10:38Speaker 3: he beats press so nicely easily. So I actually love
- 10:42Speaker 3: that fit where you can have Makai on this slot
- 10:43Speaker 3: and have Davonta Smith on the outside. I I know
- 10:45Speaker 3: DeVonta can move all around the offense, but I do
- 10:48Speaker 3: think they're at their best when DeVonta Smith is able
- 10:50Speaker 3: to stretch the field on the outside beat pressy. He
- 10:53Speaker 3: can do that. He's one of the best in the
- 10:54Speaker 3: league at it. So I do love that fit on
- 10:56Speaker 3: the Eagles office. Now, like you said, no one knows
- 10:59Speaker 3: what this offense is gonna look like. It's one of
- 11:00Speaker 3: the biggest mysteries in the NFL. Is going to be
- 11:02Speaker 3: one of the biggest talking points all summer. So we'll see.
- 11:04Speaker 3: But I don't think they're gonna just like draft of
- 11:08Speaker 3: Kylemon who played the SAPs the slot and put him
- 11:11Speaker 3: on the outside.
- 11:11Speaker 4: That doesn't make anything exactly. It'll be the starting Z receiver.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeahs can't wait to see what he and Devonte Smith
- 11:17Speaker 2: are going to do. And and look, the Eagles decided
- 11:20Speaker 2: that they were going to really concentrate heavy on offense
- 11:23Speaker 2: in this draft in terms of weapons too. How he
- 11:26Speaker 2: then takes tight end Eli Stowers in second round. I mean, boy,
- 11:31Speaker 2: this guy's a really good receiver, really really good receiver.
- 11:35Speaker 2: But the knock on him and and I think it's
- 11:38Speaker 2: an important one given what we've seen with this Eagles team.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And again we are going to see probably a different
- 11:43Speaker 2: style of offense with Sean Mannon, but he's going to
- 11:46Speaker 2: have to become a better blocker Eli Stowers is and
- 11:49Speaker 2: if you know, if certain personnel packages require that. So
- 11:53Speaker 2: I'm really happy with the pick overall. What are your
- 11:56Speaker 2: thoughts on Eli Stowers tight end position, what it may
- 12:00Speaker 2: mean for the Eagles well into the future.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Here, Yeah, I'm super curious to see how he's going
- 12:05Speaker 3: to play in the offense more than Makaile lemon Is
- 12:07Speaker 3: because I kind of feel like I know what Mikaile
- 12:08Speaker 3: lemons All is going to be. When it comes to
- 12:10Speaker 3: Eli Sours, I'm I am, honestly on it.
- 12:12Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I'm very He was great in colleges here. You said, like,
- 12:17Speaker 3: some of the stats are awesome. He gained two point
- 12:19Speaker 3: six yards per oute run that was number one in
- 12:21Speaker 3: the tight end class. He won the John mckew Or
- 12:23Speaker 3: of the Nation to Stop tight end three point one
- 12:26Speaker 3: yards per route run against zone coverage. That's key that
- 12:28Speaker 3: he was kind of similar to mkayle Lemon, and he
- 12:30Speaker 3: was very good at feeling on zone. He was a
- 12:32Speaker 3: quarterback recruit to Texas A and m transfers through Mexico State,
- 12:36Speaker 3: gets a bunch of shoulder, he gets I think two
- 12:38Speaker 3: shoulder ingeries will require surgery. He can't throw anymore. He
- 12:41Speaker 3: transfers the tight end and then he follows Diego Pavia
- 12:44Speaker 3: to Vanderbilt and he just turns into this awesome tight end.
- 12:48Speaker 3: He's so good in the short area, Like if you
- 12:50Speaker 3: watch the van about offense, he's so good on those
- 12:52Speaker 3: quick slants, quick hitters. He can also stretch the field,
- 12:55Speaker 3: like he ran over a four He ran a four
- 12:56Speaker 3: point five forty.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Yeah, he's an athletic freak.
- 12:59Speaker 3: He was on Bruce Feldman Freaklist, which is an article
- 13:02Speaker 3: I always read before where he just kind of does
- 13:04Speaker 3: the biggest the best athletes college football. He was a
- 13:07Speaker 3: part of that. Some of that I was like over
- 13:09Speaker 3: a forty five and a half inch vertical, which is nuts.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I think that was the bestest two thousand and three
- 13:13Speaker 3: for the tight end position. So like the stats are
- 13:15Speaker 3: crazy for receiving. I think he's he's got everything you
- 13:19Speaker 3: want is receiving. Now the blocking thing is real, and
- 13:22Speaker 3: I'll be honest with you, I'd be very, very shocked
- 13:24Speaker 3: if he does.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Become some sort of a blocking tight end in the NFL.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that's a realistic expectations from I
- 13:30Speaker 3: think you're looking at him almost as a power slot.
- 13:32Speaker 3: You can put him in line and motion him out,
- 13:35Speaker 3: or you can have him in line and run routes
- 13:37Speaker 3: through there. But the blocking is not good, and it's
- 13:40Speaker 3: not I don't think it's going to come in the NFL.
- 13:43Speaker 4: So maybe maybe I'm wrong. Maybe in three forty years
- 13:45Speaker 4: he puts on a ton of weight.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Now that is something a part of his profile that
- 13:49Speaker 3: that a lot of people say he can fill out
- 13:51Speaker 3: and whatnot. But there the blocking, it's the blockings just
- 13:54Speaker 3: wasn't there at all on his tape. So I'm super
- 13:57Speaker 3: curious how they're going to use him because, like I said,
- 13:59Speaker 3: if he's a power slot, where does McKayle lemon line up? Like,
- 14:02Speaker 3: how are they going to move all these chess pieces around?
- 14:04Speaker 3: Eli Sowers is one of my favorite players in this
- 14:06Speaker 3: draft that had him as one of my guys that
- 14:08Speaker 3: I tweeted out a few days before.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I loved his tape, loved.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Watching them, but the fit in Philly is something I'm
- 14:14Speaker 3: super curious about. I think with Eli Sowers, he was
- 14:18Speaker 3: just so high on their board and he stood out
- 14:20Speaker 3: to them, and how we did say that he stood
- 14:21Speaker 3: out to them in the Secon round. So they just
- 14:23Speaker 3: drafted from the board, and that's what you should be
- 14:25Speaker 3: doing a Secon round pick, like, you shouldn't be pinpointing
- 14:27Speaker 3: a position and going to draft a player in the
- 14:29Speaker 3: second and first round. That's how you get in trouble,
- 14:32Speaker 3: that's how you reach for guys. So I like to pick.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I think it's super fun. One of my biggest takeaways
- 14:37Speaker 3: from this draft is drafting McKayle Lemon and Eli Sowers.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Going into an off season.
- 14:42Speaker 3: When you're going to be trading away your best player
- 14:45Speaker 3: on offense is super hard for a fan base to
- 14:47Speaker 3: kind of swallow and accept because you just know your
- 14:49Speaker 3: team's gonna get worse. But the drafting of Eli Stowers
- 14:51Speaker 3: and Makayle Lemon and Sean Marinan on top of that
- 14:54Speaker 3: provides a ton of juice for the season that would
- 14:56Speaker 3: not have been there with AJ Brown gone. And let's
- 14:59Speaker 3: say they went to then and it's a good point
- 15:02Speaker 3: or whatever, right, Like it provides fun juice. Like the
- 15:05Speaker 3: upside is they're still yea even with trading agent Brown.
- 15:08Speaker 3: And that's a very hard kind of needle to thread
- 15:10Speaker 3: if you're an NFL team.
- 15:11Speaker 2: It goes back to what I was talking about the
- 15:13Speaker 2: relevance with this team, how the front office operates to
- 15:15Speaker 2: continue to keep this Eagles team relevant, not just in
- 15:18Speaker 2: the NFC but the NFL in general. So that being said, folks,
- 15:22Speaker 2: we got gotta take a break here, and when we
- 15:25Speaker 2: come back, we're gonna have more Eagles post draft talk.
- 15:28Speaker 2: But Brendan again, let everybody know where they can follow
- 15:32Speaker 2: you online, where they can catch your content, always fantastic content.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Let folks know where they can find you.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you can follow me on x Twitter, Brendan Dieg Underscore,
- 15:42Speaker 3: and then you can follow my work at the Score
- 15:44Speaker 3: in NFL coach Football News out there.
- 15:45Speaker 2: So all right, yeah, very good, very good, folks. We're
- 15:49Speaker 2: gonna take a break. When we get back, more Eagles
- 15:51Speaker 2: post draft talk coming your way. All right, we are
- 15:56Speaker 2: back with our good buddy Brendan Dieg from the Score,
- 15:59Speaker 2: and we got to keep talking about this Eagles a
- 16:03Speaker 2: draft Markel Bell Michael Morris, two offensive linemen taken in
- 16:09Speaker 2: this draft by the Eagles. I really thought that there
- 16:12Speaker 2: was the potential of a first round offensive line pick,
- 16:15Speaker 2: or even potentially a second round offensive line pick as well,
- 16:18Speaker 2: given where the offensive line is at the injury sustained
- 16:21Speaker 2: over the past couple of years, with so many guys
- 16:23Speaker 2: on the line, guys we love, but we know what
- 16:26Speaker 2: is happening with their careers, talking of course about Landon Dickerson,
- 16:30Speaker 2: even Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, and still I think some
- 16:33Speaker 2: questions here and there about what the right guard position
- 16:36Speaker 2: may look like in the future with these two picks
- 16:40Speaker 2: in Bell and Morris. Obviously they're gonna be there for
- 16:43Speaker 2: depth depending on you know, whether or not they make
- 16:45Speaker 2: the roster. But Brendan just want to get your thoughts
- 16:48Speaker 2: on these particular picks and maybe how they might be
- 16:51Speaker 2: used down the road. From from a more long term perspective.
- 16:54Speaker 3: It's funny these two, these two guys, Michael Morris and
- 16:58Speaker 3: Marco Bill have completely opposite like high school and upbringing
- 17:01Speaker 3: profiles to each other.
- 17:03Speaker 4: And I'll explain, like MARKA. Bell was a zero star recruit.
- 17:06Speaker 3: He wasn't on two for sevens Compassite rankings like he No,
- 17:08Speaker 3: he was not hurt of for high school rank like.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Colleges did not know about this guy. So he had
- 17:12Speaker 3: to go to a JUCO college, chansfers to Miami after
- 17:16Speaker 3: his third year, and then he wins the starting job
- 17:18Speaker 3: last year, and he was like, I think he was
- 17:20Speaker 3: a super underrated part of that Miami run last year.
- 17:23Speaker 3: He did not allow a sack last year on the
- 17:25Speaker 3: left side. He played the fifth most snaps in all
- 17:28Speaker 3: of college football out of any player, and I think.
- 17:31Speaker 4: That's really key for this for a guy his size.
- 17:33Speaker 3: He's six foot nine, he's got thirty seven seven thirty
- 17:36Speaker 3: seven inch arms, he's got a massive wing span, he's
- 17:40Speaker 3: over three hundred and fifty pounds, and I think it's
- 17:42Speaker 3: really kind of crucial to see that he played so
- 17:44Speaker 3: many snaps at that size and he was able to
- 17:46Speaker 3: handle wild dolling zero sacks. Howie Rosman at his press
- 17:50Speaker 3: conference said that he was unusual and he kept I
- 17:53Speaker 3: think he said that word a few times and it
- 17:54Speaker 3: kind of caught like cut like maybe kind of peer
- 17:56Speaker 3: puck up a little bit, like that's how they looked
- 17:57Speaker 3: at him.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Like this is an unusual person.
- 18:00Speaker 3: He's huge, he's massive, Like this is a guy that
- 18:02Speaker 3: they just fell in love with him. If you were
- 18:04Speaker 3: to honestly, if you were to ask me if there
- 18:05Speaker 3: was one player they were going to draft on day two,
- 18:09Speaker 3: in third round, Day three, was going to be Markel Bell.
- 18:11Speaker 3: They had him in twice for a visit. They loved him,
- 18:13Speaker 3: and they didn't make it like they didn't hide the
- 18:15Speaker 3: fact that they loved Markel Bell in the pre draft process.
- 18:18Speaker 3: They were going to get this guy in the building.
- 18:20Speaker 3: He has been practicing on the right side leading up
- 18:23Speaker 3: to the draft process with trainers and coaches and whatnot.
- 18:26Speaker 3: So if you're wondering if he's a Lane Johnson replacement,
- 18:29Speaker 3: he did not play right tackle at Miami.
- 18:31Speaker 4: He played left tackle. So this is something he will
- 18:32Speaker 4: have to learn and pick up and we'll see how
- 18:35Speaker 4: it goes.
- 18:36Speaker 3: He's not gonna my guess is like Fred Johnson would
- 18:39Speaker 3: be the swing tackle week one. Let's say someone does
- 18:41Speaker 3: go down in September, October, whatever, You're probably gonna see
- 18:45Speaker 3: Fred Johnson on the side.
- 18:45Speaker 4: I don't think markup Bell is going to be the
- 18:47Speaker 4: first one up.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Maybe maybe he shined and looked great at training camp,
- 18:50Speaker 3: but I don't think you're going to see Markel Bell
- 18:53Speaker 3: year one, just unless there's a ton of injuries. So
- 18:56Speaker 3: it's more of a developmental tackle, probably developed into a
- 18:59Speaker 3: swing tackle, and you're you're hoping that he can be
- 19:01Speaker 3: a starter.
- 19:02Speaker 4: He's got to size, he's got the tool, he's got everything.
- 19:03Speaker 4: You just need the.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Coaching aspect of it. And Mike Morris, on the other hand,
- 19:08Speaker 3: he was a four star recruit. He was I think
- 19:11Speaker 3: sixty seventh nationally. I believe in that class. He goes
- 19:14Speaker 3: to Georgia, he does not play at all until Tate
- 19:18Speaker 3: Rutledge gets hurt two years ago. He plays five games,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and then he finally starts last year. So he there
- 19:25Speaker 3: was a scout that said that he kind of like
- 19:29Speaker 3: made up for the recruiting bus this year because he
- 19:33Speaker 3: finally got there. He finally started after five years after
- 19:35Speaker 3: being such a highly ranked recruit. He finally got his
- 19:37Speaker 3: starting opportunity, kind of made up for it, like he
- 19:39Speaker 3: beat the bus factor of being such a highly reanc
- 19:41Speaker 3: recruit at Georgia not playing. He's got a lot of
- 19:44Speaker 3: work to do. He's going he's an athlete, he's a
- 19:46Speaker 3: freak in the gym. I heard a story, so I
- 19:49Speaker 3: read a story on like I think it was like
- 19:50Speaker 3: a Georgia two four seven website saying he's got like
- 19:53Speaker 3: his name plastered all over the weight room there, like
- 19:55Speaker 3: he's a weight room sleek there and you can see it,
- 19:57Speaker 3: like if you look at him, he's massive. Yeah, but
- 20:00Speaker 3: the technique is definitely he has to fix up. Like
- 20:02Speaker 3: if you think about it this way, why was a
- 20:04Speaker 3: Georgia starting guard drafted in the sixth round?
- 20:07Speaker 1: Right?
- 20:07Speaker 3: Like these are guys that go earlier, so there's a
- 20:10Speaker 3: lot of work to do there. My guess he's a
- 20:12Speaker 3: practice squad guy at the gate and then we'll go
- 20:14Speaker 3: from there. But the talent, the tools are there for
- 20:17Speaker 3: him to potentially develop into a backup guard or maybe
- 20:20Speaker 3: a starting gud. That's what you're hoping for in a
- 20:21Speaker 3: six round pick, you're taking a fly on the kid.
- 20:23Speaker 3: So yeah, these are developmental pieces. But I like how
- 20:26Speaker 3: they added offensive line and we knew how he was
- 20:27Speaker 3: going to do it. He was probably got like the
- 20:30Speaker 3: meme of the kid with the vein coming out of
- 20:31Speaker 3: his forearm, and you didn't have an offensive line after
- 20:33Speaker 3: two rounds. He needed one it's like a drug to him.
- 20:36Speaker 4: It's in thetic. She needs a feed. So yeah, I
- 20:40Speaker 4: really like these picks.
- 20:41Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of kind of getting to these
- 20:43Speaker 3: developmental guys in from big programs and we'll see what
- 20:46Speaker 3: they can do with them.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I think every draft brandan, every single draft does fans.
- 20:51Speaker 2: We kind of sit back and we look at look,
- 20:54Speaker 2: we look at the picks, and we see a player
- 20:56Speaker 2: or two where we kind of just scratch our heads
- 20:59Speaker 2: a little bit, you know, we questioned what the rationale
- 21:02Speaker 2: was with certain picks. Maybe it's a couple of picks
- 21:05Speaker 2: here or there was certainly like that.
- 21:08Speaker 1: For me, it's.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Particular draft with the Eagles. It seems like every draft.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I'm kind of scratching my head every now and again.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm talking about the quarterback being picked.
- 21:18Speaker 3: On.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I think it was Day two. Was the day two?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Day three?
- 21:20Speaker 4: Three?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Faith three? Yeah, that's right.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I'm wondering which pick or picks were you not maybe
- 21:26Speaker 2: the biggest fan of, or maybe have some skepticism of.
- 21:30Speaker 3: So I think the only one you can kind of
- 21:32Speaker 3: look at is the quarterback here, Like cold was new
- 21:34Speaker 3: Ski in the seventh round. It's he was picked to
- 21:37Speaker 3: forty four I think yeah, so like it's a complete flyer,
- 21:40Speaker 3: Like you can't really critique some trump picks like they're
- 21:43Speaker 3: taking swings at them now with the cold paint. It's
- 21:45Speaker 3: interesting because he was i think the sixth quarterback taken
- 21:48Speaker 3: or fifth quarterback off the board, Like you had Garrett
- 21:52Speaker 3: nuts Meyers still on the board, Tealing Green still on
- 21:54Speaker 3: the board. So let's say those guys, let's say Tailing
- 21:58Speaker 3: Green are guarantt us my turn into starters down the road. Right,
- 22:01Speaker 3: you can look at and go how he still had
- 22:04Speaker 3: most of the quarterbacks left on the board to pick from,
- 22:06Speaker 3: and they picked the wrong guy.
- 22:09Speaker 4: With cold Payton.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Like, I'm he's another guy training camp, but everyone's going
- 22:13Speaker 3: to be looking for because he's getting comp to Taysom
- 22:17Speaker 3: Hill a lot. Like his running ability's nuts, Like his
- 22:19Speaker 3: running highlights in North Dakota State are awesome. He's super fun,
- 22:24Speaker 3: he's kind of he's massive. You could see him kind
- 22:27Speaker 3: of maybe in that Taysom Hill role. Potentially, I don't
- 22:30Speaker 3: think anyone's going to be able to replicate what Taysom
- 22:32Speaker 3: Hill did ever. Again, I think he's kind of a
- 22:33Speaker 3: one on a one of one NFL player, But I
- 22:36Speaker 3: think maybe he'll try to get some package with him,
- 22:37Speaker 3: but he's got a lot of work to do from
- 22:39Speaker 3: the pocket. Like, I don't think this is a guy
- 22:41Speaker 3: that's going to be able to start an NFL game
- 22:44Speaker 3: a fews. So that's the one pick where you can
- 22:45Speaker 3: kind of look at where you go, Like Taylor Green
- 22:47Speaker 3: was the freak athlete to combine. He had all the tools,
- 22:50Speaker 3: but just could have put it together at Arkansas Mcgarrett
- 22:52Speaker 3: Nasmayer felt because a lot of people were there's a
- 22:55Speaker 3: lot of people talking when he had a back injury
- 22:57Speaker 3: and he had obleak issues, so he fell that far
- 22:59Speaker 3: like this is cool. ORNs Fire was like considered the
- 23:01Speaker 3: number one overall pick on your and mocks right and
- 23:04Speaker 3: he So that's the one pick on the Eagles board
- 23:07Speaker 3: where you can kind of look at and go, okay,
- 23:08Speaker 3: like did they pick the right guy?
- 23:10Speaker 2: But yeah, we'll see, yeah, well absolutely see and uh
- 23:14Speaker 2: to close us out here, look, I think that the
- 23:17Speaker 2: one position on this team that's been in the back
- 23:21Speaker 2: of everybody's mind, some folks have spoken out about it
- 23:24Speaker 2: more so than others is the safety position. And yes,
- 23:27Speaker 2: the Eagles did end up drafting safety Cole was Newski.
- 23:31Speaker 2: You mentioned pick number two forty four. I'm just I'm
- 23:36Speaker 2: a little concerned about where that position is going. Then again,
- 23:40Speaker 2: I take a step back and I say, look, there's
- 23:41Speaker 2: still a lot more time left in this off season
- 23:44Speaker 2: before the regular season starts.
- 23:46Speaker 1: It's only April.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Here, I think you may I think you actually shot
- 23:49Speaker 2: off a tweet somewhat similar to that recently. But how
- 23:52Speaker 2: concerned should we be with the safety position kind of
- 23:55Speaker 2: heading into the twenty twenty sixth season, even after they
- 23:59Speaker 2: drafted Cole was new Ski, What do you think here?
- 24:02Speaker 3: I was looking at the depth chart right after the draft,
- 24:05Speaker 3: and the safety stands out, but every other position looks
- 24:08Speaker 3: great or more than above average, right, I think, like,
- 24:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't kill them to go into the season with
- 24:16Speaker 3: the safety that they have, and I would watch out
- 24:18Speaker 3: for Michael Carter getting starting safety reps they won a
- 24:21Speaker 3: trading camp, Like I think.
- 24:23Speaker 4: This is how he talked about it.
- 24:25Speaker 3: If someone asked him at the final press conference on
- 24:29Speaker 3: day three about the safety position, and he said that
- 24:31Speaker 3: that people on the outside view the safety position differently
- 24:34Speaker 3: than we do, like how good it is on the inside,
- 24:37Speaker 3: so they think that they're fine a safety. Now, I
- 24:40Speaker 3: also not maybe not fine, but they're okay if they
- 24:43Speaker 3: it's a week one right now, yeah right. I also
- 24:46Speaker 3: do think they were probably in on some guys in
- 24:48Speaker 3: free agency that just didn't work out. I just think
- 24:50Speaker 3: they didn't want to bring back read blanket Ship at
- 24:52Speaker 3: that price. I think Vic Fangil probably has something to
- 24:56Speaker 3: do with that as well. Like I couldn't imagine that
- 24:58Speaker 3: Eagles and how we wouldn't have given Replakenship that money
- 25:02Speaker 3: without mcdangers saying don't do it. It's kind of been
- 25:04Speaker 3: my belief because he didn't go for that much money.
- 25:07Speaker 3: So I think they just wanted someone else. I think
- 25:09Speaker 3: they were they they saw what reblanket Ship probably got
- 25:12Speaker 3: the best football at them.
- 25:13Speaker 4: That's probably what they were thinking. And mcdangrel want to change.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So I would watch out for Michael Carter getting starting
- 25:19Speaker 3: safety reps day one.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I do think that's a thing.
- 25:21Speaker 3: And I also don't hate like having Marcus EPs and
- 25:25Speaker 3: Andrew mccoopa start day one. Marcus Ops was okay last
- 25:28Speaker 3: year for the Eagles when he had to start down
- 25:29Speaker 3: the stretch. What I like it upgrade? Absolutely. We remember
- 25:34Speaker 3: the they traded for CJ. Garner Johnson, Uh was like
- 25:37Speaker 3: end of August like this, there's still plenty of time
- 25:40Speaker 3: in the offseason to acquire safety, and I'm sure that's
- 25:42Speaker 3: on the top of the Eagles radar.
- 25:44Speaker 4: But I think every.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Team's going to have a weakness on their roster that
- 25:48Speaker 3: they're that they're they're going to have right more than
- 25:50Speaker 3: teams more than one.
- 25:52Speaker 4: So if they go into the season with the sadies,
- 25:54Speaker 4: I'm fine with it.
- 25:55Speaker 3: And it's obviously going to be panic time when or
- 25:58Speaker 3: if it happens where they're they're getting torched in week three,
- 26:02Speaker 3: week four, five, right, But I wouldn't kill them if
- 26:05Speaker 3: they didn't.
- 26:05Speaker 4: I don't want to. I think they've done such a
- 26:07Speaker 4: good job else round the roster.
- 26:08Speaker 3: They spent a lot of money on uh On, they
- 26:11Speaker 3: just paid Jon Grenard, and this is just a team
- 26:14Speaker 3: that doesn't value the position as well as as other team's.
- 26:16Speaker 1: True, It's absolutely true.
- 26:18Speaker 3: It's gonna be it's gonna be interesting to watch McNeil
- 26:22Speaker 3: emw's career because he was picked four picks after yes,
- 26:25Speaker 3: I think it was four picks, right, yep, yep, four
- 26:27Speaker 3: picks after you last hours, So it's gonna be interesting
- 26:29Speaker 3: to kind of see, like what if he turned into
- 26:31Speaker 3: a really good player last hours, doesn't yep. Kind of
- 26:33Speaker 3: an interesting thing to follow over the next years.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it's gonna be a fun upcoming Eagle season.
- 26:38Speaker 2: There's a lot of storylines that we're going to be
