- 1:28Ladies and gentlemen, this is Inspirations for Your
- 1:31Life.
- 1:31This is March 31st, 2026, and it is
- 1:35so great to be with everyone here today.
- 1:39Our topic is the master topic of owning
- 1:45your focus, but today's granular topic is series
- 1:49five, show 14, episode four, how to build
- 1:52resilience.
- 1:53The master topic is owning your focus, clarity,
- 1:55courage, and momentum, and this kind of parlays
- 1:58into that.
- 1:59So welcome, everyone.
- 1:59I am John C.
- 2:00Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:04podcast host, coach, passionate life-long learner, and
- 2:09yes, pretty soon, a published author.
- 2:11So today's episode of Inspirations for Your Life
- 2:14dives into resilience, teaching how to turn setbacks
- 2:17into momentum, sharpen focus under pressure, and consistently
- 2:22build strength through intentional action.
- 2:25Incidentally, guys, that's a lot about what my
- 2:27new book covers.
- 2:28I'm not gonna get into any more about
- 2:29that, but I will let you know that
- 2:31the book is gonna be dedicated to my
- 2:33parents actually on April 17th, and it will
- 2:38be available for purchase on the 18th, and
- 2:40it will be shipping on May 1st.
- 2:43Number one, guys, stress reveals strength.
- 2:47Difficulties highlight what you can handle.
- 2:50Yes, you can handle a lot.
- 2:53I don't know if you guys know that,
- 2:55but sometimes we put the gates up before
- 2:57we even have a chance to see what
- 3:00it is that we're doing, and we shut
- 3:02down before we actually have that opportunity.
- 3:06So I think that's a very important thing.
- 3:08Number two, guys, recovery fuels endurance.
- 3:12Taking time to restore energizes your patience.
- 3:17A lot of people don't take the time.
- 3:18They keep pushing and pushing and pushing, and
- 3:20then they're not where they wanna be because
- 3:22of, well, frustration, okay?
- 3:26Number three, guys, daily habits.
- 3:29Yes, daily habits, guys, build toughness.
- 3:35Small, consistent routines compound into strength.
- 3:39A lot of people don't realize that our
- 3:42small actions build us into something very, very
- 3:45strong and unstoppable.
- 3:47Number four, guys, are you ready?
- 3:49Number four is overcome setbacks.
- 3:53Intentionally face challenges with conscious effort.
- 3:56I think sometimes we hit a challenge and
- 3:58we don't realize that it's an opportunity for
- 4:00us to learn and not to get stopped.
- 4:03It's actually put there so that we can
- 4:05become a better version of our self.
- 4:08Number five, guys, learn from the obstacles that
- 4:12are presented before you.
- 4:13Each barrier teaches valuable lessons.
- 4:18And I think when we start to realize
- 4:19that it is about the lessons that we're
- 4:22learning, that's when I think we understand that
- 4:25there's hope, that there is possibility to what
- 4:28we're trying to achieve.
- 4:30Number six, guys, focus strengthens our resolve.
- 4:36Concentration deepens your ability to persist, right?
- 4:40And so when we're not persisting, it's usually
- 4:43because we've lost focus or because we become
- 4:45frustrated or a multitude of other things.
- 4:48But the core of the matter is that
- 4:50we've lost eye on the prize.
- 4:53We lost eye on where we're going.
- 4:55We took our eyes off the road, okay?
- 4:58Number seven, guys, number seven, adaptability multiplies impact.
- 5:08Adaptability multiplies impact.
- 5:12Flexing strategy enhances the results.
- 5:15So if we can be a little bit,
- 5:17let's say forgiving in one area, we'll find
- 5:21that we will enhance our results.
- 5:24And of course, the outcome.
- 5:26Number eight, guys, resilience creates freedom.
- 5:31It does.
- 5:32Because when we're resilient, we can bounce back.
- 5:34It's not the fact that we fell down,
- 5:36it's how many times we get back up.
- 5:38That's the most important thing.
- 5:39So resilience creates a very unique sense of
- 5:42freedom.
- 5:44Emotional strength allows independent action.
- 5:48Emotional strength.
- 5:49I'm not talking about your physical strength, how
- 5:51strong you are, if you can lift, you
- 5:53know, 50 pounds or 200 pounds or 500
- 5:55pounds.
- 5:55I'm not talking about that.
- 5:56I'm talking about your emotional strength.
- 5:58And your emotional strength is just as important
- 6:00as that brawn strength, right?
- 6:02Because if you don't have it up here,
- 6:05then all you're gonna be is somebody that
- 6:07just can, you know, lift and execute.
- 6:09But you're not gonna be somebody that's gonna
- 6:10really be intentional.
- 6:13And that's what we're about here, right?
- 6:17Number nine, guys, track progress daily.
- 6:20I think that's a very important one.
- 6:22Monitor the growth compounds because it will turn
- 6:25into a success.
- 6:26Now, not overnight, guys, not overnight.
- 6:28But I promise you, it will turn into
- 6:30success if you stay focused on where you
- 6:33are going.
- 6:34If you're not focused, well, guys, then you're
- 6:37gonna fall behind.
- 6:39You're gonna be fall behind.
- 6:41And by falling behind, that's gonna be a
- 6:44very big problem for a lot of people
- 6:47because they're not gonna realize the one thing.
- 6:49And that one thing, guys, is that you
- 6:51can go pretty far.
- 6:54But you have to first believe that you
- 6:56can go far.
- 6:57Number 10, guys, bounce back quickly.
- 7:02Rapid recovery maintains momentum.
- 7:04You fall down, get up.
- 7:07You need a minute or two, fine.
- 7:08Don't take a half hour, an hour to
- 7:09get back up.
- 7:10Because what happens is that sets into our
- 7:13mind a bias, like, oh, I'm so tired.
- 7:15Oh, I can't get up.
- 7:16Oh, I can't really have it.
- 7:17And you just let it weigh on you
- 7:18and it just kind of ties you down.
- 7:20And we do not want that, guys.
- 7:23Number 11, consistency reinforces confidence.
- 7:28CRC, consistency reinforces confidence.
- 7:31The consistency allows us to feel a certain
- 7:35way, especially when things are happening in a
- 7:37positive direction.
- 7:39So daily effort, guys, solidifies the belief in
- 7:42yourself of who you are and where you're
- 7:45going.
- 7:45I think that's another big challenge for a
- 7:47lot of people is they don't realize that
- 7:50it's where you're going.
- 7:52It's great to know where you are right
- 7:54now, but it's also important to understand where
- 7:56you're going.
- 7:56And if you don't understand where you're going,
- 7:59guys, that can be a very, very big
- 8:02problem, again, for a lot of people.
- 8:05I'm not saying it may stop you, but
- 8:08it may stop a lot of people.
- 8:09And so if we're cognizant and we're aware
- 8:12of these things and we are proactive, then
- 8:15we're gonna be at the top of our
- 8:17game all the time.
- 8:19Number 12, guys, set boundaries for energy.
- 8:24Protect focus by defining the limits.
- 8:29So limits are boundaries.
- 8:34They're there to protect us, they're there to
- 8:35protect others, but not just protection.
- 8:39They control our energy, right?
- 8:42And they allow us to be able to
- 8:45stay within certain parameters so we don't become
- 8:48frustrated.
- 8:49I think that's a big one for a
- 8:51lot of people is they don't realize that
- 8:52when frustration sets in, we have to have
- 8:56a way to combat that.
- 8:58I think that's a very, very important thing
- 9:02to definitely understand.
- 9:04We have to know how to combat that.
- 9:06And if we know how to combat that,
- 9:08then our life really changes quite a bit.
- 9:11Number 13, guys, embrace challenges deliberately.
- 9:16Choosing difficulty strengthens mastery.
- 9:21Choosing difficulty.
- 9:22So wise person once told me, John, do
- 9:24what's the hardest thing first.
- 9:27Because when you do, it'll give you that
- 9:31feeling of euphoria that you can basically do
- 9:33the next thing, which is gonna be easier
- 9:35than the hardest thing, right?
- 9:38Number 14, guys, reflection sharpens resilience.
- 9:44At the end of your day, do you
- 9:45take time to think about what it is
- 9:49that you're doing, or do you just move
- 9:52on and be like, well, that happened, so
- 9:54what?
- 9:55When we reflect, we look at the good
- 9:57that happened, and we look at the things
- 9:58that we could improve to make today a
- 10:01better day.
- 10:02Now, we're not gonna go back and change
- 10:02it, but tomorrow we could have an even
- 10:05better day.
- 10:06And I think that's an important thing is
- 10:08that we can learn from our experiences.
- 10:11We can learn from our challenges, because even
- 10:16these challenges that are hitting us over the
- 10:18head day in and day out can be
- 10:20our greatest teachers to help us overcome the
- 10:23obstacles of life.
- 10:27Thinking on the past events improves future responses.
- 10:31I don't tell you to think about the
- 10:33events so you can harp on them, so
- 10:34that you can beat yourself up, so that
- 10:36you can put yourself down to the ground.
- 10:38No, I tell you this so that you
- 10:40can be aware of them.
- 10:42And so next time when those patterns, let's
- 10:45say, arise, you're like, oh, I get this,
- 10:47now I know why this is happening, I
- 10:49know what's going on here, I know why
- 10:50this is transforming, I know it, I get
- 10:52it.
- 10:53That's a very important thing, guys.
- 10:56And the more that you realize that, the
- 11:00more that understanding and the more that changing
- 11:02things will make a very, very big difference
- 11:05in your life.
- 11:06Number 15, guys, patience strengthens judgment.
- 11:13Waiting wisely prevents costly mistakes.
- 11:18But many people don't wanna wait.
- 11:21They get impulsive.
- 11:22Like, we have to do this now, now,
- 11:24now, now, now.
- 11:25Like, you're at the supermarket or you're at
- 11:28a store and you see stuff at the
- 11:30register.
- 11:30You don't need that stuff.
- 11:31But because of the way they've impulse marketed
- 11:33to you, you're like, oh, I'm definitely gonna
- 11:36do that, right?
- 11:37But is it something you really need?
- 11:40Probably not.
- 11:42But the impulse buy gets us to do
- 11:45it.
- 11:45So I tell you to be cognizant of
- 11:47impulse decisions.
- 11:49Impulse decisions are usually wrong.
- 11:53That's different from gut decision.
- 11:54This gut is not the same thing, okay?
- 11:58Impulse means I'm taking it because of something
- 12:00here that's going on.
- 12:01A gut happens with a slow feeling.
- 12:07That this is the right thing to do,
- 12:09right?
- 12:11So as I said, it's important to know
- 12:13this and to understand and prevent the costly
- 12:18mistakes that can arise around you, all right?
- 12:23Number 16, guys, recovery prevents burnout.
- 12:28Yes, it does, guys.
- 12:30Rest ensures sustainable progress.
- 12:34You know, a lot of times you wanna
- 12:35keep going, wanna keep going, wanna keep going,
- 12:36the problem with keep going is that by
- 12:40doing this, we don't give ourselves a break,
- 12:43right?
- 12:44If you run an engine nonstop, what's gonna
- 12:46happen?
- 12:47That engine's gonna burn out.
- 12:48You need to give everything a break.
- 12:49You even need a break.
- 12:50If you're running, you're walking, you need a
- 12:52break, right?
- 12:53So there's nothing wrong with stopping and taking
- 12:56a break.
- 12:57Absolutely nothing wrong with that.
- 13:00What some people do though, is they push,
- 13:02push, push, push, push until they're forced to
- 13:04take a break, right?
- 13:06Not on their own choosing.
- 13:08Something happens to them, they get hurt or
- 13:11what have you.
- 13:13And if we understand that shift between what
- 13:16could cause burnout and what could give us
- 13:19a reset, can give us a great burst
- 13:23of energy and a lot more creativity so
- 13:26we can actually move forward.
- 13:29Number 17, guys, reframe difficulties as lessons.
- 13:36Change perspective to uncover opportunity.
- 13:40There's so many different things out there.
- 13:42And when we just change the perspective, change
- 13:44the angle just a little bit, we become,
- 13:48well, unstoppable.
- 13:51But a lot of times it's just a
- 13:53subtle pivot.
- 13:54It's not like we're changing the entire direction.
- 13:57And it's these subtle nuances that we can
- 14:01respond to that can affect the success and
- 14:05quality of our lives, right?
- 14:08Number 18, guys, daily wins compound.
- 14:12They sure do.
- 14:13Celebrate small achievements to build power.
- 14:17And one thing you're gonna know about is
- 14:19that power builds even more each time.
- 14:23That feeling you get when you've done something
- 14:26right, and then you do it again, it
- 14:28keeps compounding.
- 14:28It's like this endless loop, but it's a
- 14:30positive endless loop that gets you to understand
- 14:35and to keep getting that pat on the
- 14:38back from the dopamine that releases in your
- 14:41brain.
- 14:41That's very, very powerful, guys.
- 14:45Number 19, guys, stay committed to growth.
- 14:52Long-term focus beats the short-term distractions.
- 14:55Hands down, it does.
- 14:58Number 20, guys, resilience enhances problem-solving.
- 15:06Strength under pressure improves decisions.
- 15:11And I think a lot of people don't
- 15:12realize the fact that when we have strength,
- 15:15we have more of a sense of calmness.
- 15:18We can make the decisions from a higher
- 15:22point when we're not being led, or we're
- 15:25not, let's say, making a decision that's impulse
- 15:29-driven.
- 15:29I think those are very important things for
- 15:32us to understand.
- 15:33The difference between a decision we make because
- 15:35of gut and a decision we make because
- 15:37of an impulse.
- 15:39Very important.
- 15:40Number 21, guys, flexibility builds opportunity.
- 15:46You know, when somebody is flexible, I don't
- 15:48care whether it's with their schedule or with
- 15:50their other options or what they do, they've
- 15:52got more possibilities for opportunity.
- 15:59And so adjusting an approach opens new paths.
- 16:03But a lot of people, whether they're coming
- 16:05out of school or they've been in grad
- 16:07school, they're set on one way and they
- 16:10don't wanna change.
- 16:12And because they're inflexible, well, they break bridges,
- 16:17and not literally bridges, but speaking about bridges,
- 16:20if bridges weren't flexible, bridges didn't sway with
- 16:23the wind, right?
- 16:24A little bit.
- 16:26The bridge would break, right?
- 16:31And I think this is an important piece
- 16:33for us to reflect on right now, is
- 16:36that when we're flexible in life, just like
- 16:38a structure needs to be flexible, or it
- 16:41could collapse and not be very stable.
- 16:43If we're flexible in life, then we can
- 16:47get lots of opportunities.
- 16:48If we're not flexible, it's like we shut
- 16:51out the world.
- 16:52We shut out the potential opportunity that could
- 16:55be there, right?
- 16:59We said before, our thoughts create our opportunity.
- 17:03Number 22, guys, small adjustments sustain effort.
- 17:09Small little pivots, small little micro changes.
- 17:15These tiny changes basically maintain our momentum.
- 17:23You know, if we think about sailing for
- 17:24a moment, because I love to sail.
- 17:25When we sail, if we shift the weight
- 17:29just a tiny bit, that can really affect
- 17:32the trajectory of not only where the boat's
- 17:35going, but also the speed at which it's
- 17:37going.
- 17:38When we move the weight, we're able to
- 17:40get the boat a little more on a
- 17:41heel, and thus less of the boat is
- 17:44in the water, so creating less drag.
- 17:47So that's another reason for us to be
- 17:50flexible.
- 17:52Some of the people I know say, oh,
- 17:54it's gotta be this way, this way, it's
- 17:55gotta be all this whole way, and if
- 17:56it's not, I'm not interested.
- 18:00What you're doing is telling the universe, okay,
- 18:02I don't want this.
- 18:03If it doesn't come in a red box,
- 18:05I don't want it, which is a bad
- 18:07attitude.
- 18:09Number 23, guys, resilient mindset multiplies outcomes.
- 18:15I'll just say it again.
- 18:18A resilient or a flexible mindset multiplies outcomes.
- 18:21So mental toughness magnifies results in our lives,
- 18:26and so mental toughness doesn't mean that you're
- 18:30nasty.
- 18:31Mental toughness doesn't mean you're rude to people.
- 18:34Mental toughness means that you are protecting your
- 18:38boundaries, and you're not letting people walk over
- 18:42you.
- 18:42That's a big point of what mental toughness
- 18:45means, and when people know that we're a
- 18:48mentally tough person, they won't try anymore to
- 18:53press our buttons.
- 18:54That's important.
- 18:56Number 24, guys, maintain calmness under pressure.
- 19:04I know that that's virtually impossible.
- 19:06I don't care what kind of emergency situation
- 19:08you're in.
- 19:09Everyone's got their blood raising because, oh my
- 19:12gosh, what's gonna happen?
- 19:15Maintain calm under pressure.
- 19:18Composure ensures clear thinking.
- 19:21So the composure ensures clear thinking, and when
- 19:24that happens, it's like, oh, I get it.
- 19:27Now I understand, all right?
- 19:29Number 25, resilience preserves momentum.
- 19:36Bounce back, and you'll keep going forward in
- 19:41that direction.
- 19:42People sometimes don't bounce back for a couple
- 19:45of reasons.
- 19:45One, they claim they need more time.
- 19:48I'm tired.
- 19:49They're afraid that if they bounce back, they
- 19:52may be successful.
- 19:54They're afraid that if they bounce back, they
- 19:57may have to become accountable.
- 19:59Oh, wow, isn't that a shock?
- 20:03Number 26, guys, observe patterns for improvement.
- 20:09Insight drives strategic action.
- 20:12So life is all about patterns, whether we're
- 20:15talking about technology, whether we're talking about personalities,
- 20:20they're all part of patterns.
- 20:25Everything around us is a pattern, from nature
- 20:28to human beings to even the cycles of
- 20:31life.
- 20:32Everything is a pattern, and once we understand
- 20:36the pattern, we can actually move forward.
- 20:40But discovering or decoding a pattern is something
- 20:44that a lot of people wrestle with their
- 20:47entire life.
- 20:49So knowing what a pattern is and recognizing
- 20:51that pattern and how to act when that
- 20:53pattern rears its head is a very key
- 20:57success strategy in life, just being honest.
- 21:03Number 27, guys, discipline reinforces recovery.
- 21:07Recovery, very simple.
- 21:10Structured effort enhances endurance.
- 21:13Structured effort enhances endurance.
- 21:17So it kind of builds a framework for
- 21:19us, right?
- 21:22If we have a framework, we could stay
- 21:24within a framework.
- 21:25The simplest thing I can give you is
- 21:26a coloring book.
- 21:29So in a coloring book, you have lines.
- 21:34You probably remember paint by number or marker
- 21:39by number.
- 21:41When a part of the chart has numbers,
- 21:45it keeps us within there.
- 21:46Red might be blue, red might be two,
- 21:49blue might be six, and we have to
- 21:51keep that color within that area.
- 21:56So as we have to use a thicker
- 21:57pen, a thinner pen, you get the idea,
- 22:00right?
- 22:00So this is key, guys, for success.
- 22:05Number 27, guys, discipline reinforces recovery.
- 22:12Structured effort enhances the endurance.
- 22:16All right, number 28, guys, endurance grows quietly.
- 22:23Strength develops steadily with time.
- 22:27So it grows behind the scenes.
- 22:34And as that's happening, strength is also building
- 22:37its way.
- 22:39But a lot of you are like, oh
- 22:40my gosh, I can't do this.
- 22:43Number 29, guys, focus on solutions.
- 22:49Energy spent resolving issues creates results.
- 22:54Energy spent complaining about issues just creates more
- 22:59problems, more challenges, more frustration.
- 23:05Number 30, guys, strength sustains progress.
- 23:10Inner power fuels continuous advancement.
- 23:13So that inner power, that dopamine release that
- 23:16we're getting when we do something great, it
- 23:18fuels us to be even better than we
- 23:22were before.
- 23:24You know, if you asked me even 10
- 23:26or 15 years ago, do we have our
- 23:29own motivation?
- 23:30I would have said kind of, until I
- 23:33learned about the dopamine.
- 23:34The dopamine's like this natural personal back-tapper,
- 23:40right?
- 23:40It gives us the pat on the back
- 23:43and a complete euphoric feeling that goes along
- 23:47with the pat on the back.
- 23:48And the best is it keeps happening over
- 23:50and over and over again each time that
- 23:53we create that positive act.
- 23:56That's powerful, guys.
- 23:58So now you know that patting yourself on
- 24:03the back is great.
- 24:04I know that people do it too, but
- 24:05when you do it to yourself and you
- 24:08get that euphoric feeling from the dopamine release
- 24:11in your brain and body, it's like, whoa.
- 24:16You ever been on a roller coaster?
- 24:17It's like that dip in the roller coaster,
- 24:19right?
- 24:19And then, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 24:24Like, you know, oh, down, right?
- 24:25Wee-hee.
- 24:26Then people, people scream, right?
- 24:28So I think these are important things to
- 24:30realize as we think about resilience, resilience.
- 24:36Now, according to my good friends at Merriam
- 24:40-Webster, this is what they have to say
- 24:46about it.
- 24:49Resilience.
- 24:50So now, the ability of something to return
- 24:53to its original size and shape after being
- 24:56compressed or deformed.
- 24:57We could think about, let's say, one of
- 25:00those beanbag stress balls.
- 25:03And if you squeeze that stress ball and
- 25:07you hold it, you'll notice it gets some
- 25:09indents from your finger or wherever you're pressing
- 25:11it.
- 25:11But then the fact that it returns back
- 25:14to its original square or circle or triangle
- 25:17or whatever shape it was in, the fact
- 25:19that it can return back to that in
- 25:21literally seconds to under a minute, that's resilience.
- 25:26Do we bounce back to the state we
- 25:29were in before we were interrupted?
- 25:31Let me see if I can give an
- 25:32example.
- 25:33So you're with your friends, and maybe one
- 25:35of them actually took you down a peg.
- 25:38Maybe it was something that wasn't justified.
- 25:40But do you allow that to continue to
- 25:42take you down, or do you bounce back
- 25:45to where you were before the comment came
- 25:47out?
- 25:47I think that's the real thing about today
- 25:50is do you bounce back?
- 25:53If you don't bounce back, my question is
- 25:55why don't you bounce back?
- 25:58Are you scared?
- 26:00Are you not sure how to come back
- 26:04with resilience?
- 26:05Are you not sure what has to happen?
- 26:10Are you not sure of how resilience can
- 26:14actually make a true difference in your life?
- 26:16Are you?
- 26:17And if you're not, then I think you've
- 26:19got some work to do, just being honest
- 26:22there.
- 26:22I think that's a very, very important thing.
- 26:25Guys, in closing, I do wanna invite you
- 26:28to catch the full episode of Inspirational Your
- 26:31Life, this one here, or any other one,
- 26:34which you guys can do 24 hours a
- 26:36day by visiting believemeachieve.com.
- 26:41You know, we've made this really easy for
- 26:43you guys.
- 26:43You can actually watch it online.
- 26:46You can watch it on many cable stations.
- 26:49You can even listen to it on the
- 26:51road on many popular podcast networks.
- 26:56Your intention, okay, will help fuel the discipline
- 27:03to keep you motivated because motivation fades, okay?
- 27:10Discipline becomes something that's part of you, something
- 27:14you can't change unless you want to, but
- 27:19it just takes you in a way, it
- 27:22says, I have to do this.
- 27:24If I don't, then, you know, I'm not
- 27:27gonna like let myself do something else, right?
- 27:29That's the real name of the game.
- 27:33If I had to give you like a
- 27:34main name, somebody was to manipulate you, and
- 27:41then suddenly a few hours later or a
- 27:42day later, you pop back.
- 27:46And it doesn't just mean shape, as Meredith
- 27:50Webster said, it also means the characteristic of
- 27:54your mind and your body.
- 27:56Maybe because of what somebody said, you're feeling
- 27:58really terrible, but then for you to be
- 28:01able to just turn around, twist it back,
- 28:03that's resilience.
