- 0:27Hey, everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So let's talk about the fact that the holidays don't always
- 0:34bring out the best in people. I think it's very interesting
- 0:38how we get close to the holidays.
- 0:40We hit that beginning of November mark and then all of a
- 0:44sudden everybody starts to make their holiday plans or starts
- 0:47thinking about them or starts pushing their agendas on people
- 0:52and often being part of. That a family is very
- 0:56complicated. Not often.
- 0:58Always being part of a family is very complicated.
- 1:00Sometimes we want to believe that our family has our best
- 1:03interest at heart, and sometimes they do, and sometimes they have
- 1:06their own best interest at heart, just like we do.
- 1:09Sometimes we do things and it's just for our own best interest.
- 1:12Let's be honest about it and let's not make big stories about
- 1:15it. It's just true.
- 1:16That's the way it is. So when you start to.
- 1:18Think about how the holiday effects people and how things
- 1:22all of a sudden start to show up with people.
- 1:25There's this elevated sense of importance that people might
- 1:30have about themselves. And also saying, hey, well
- 1:33you're going to do it my way because my way is the right way
- 1:36or my way is the only way. And this is where it gets
- 1:39disturbing for people and. It happens across the board.
- 1:43I've had it happen in my own life.
- 1:44I've had it happen with my extended family.
- 1:47I have had it happen a lot. And part of the reason that that
- 1:51is the case is because we don't put up this, this conversation
- 1:55early enough in the year. So we don't quote, UN quote,
- 1:58disappoint people or we just care too much.
- 2:03Care more about their feelings than our own feelings because
- 2:07oh, you know, just suck it up for the day.
- 2:09Just go. They won't be here forever.
- 2:11There's always a story that goes around it.
- 2:13But the challenge you have is the sacrifice you make of
- 2:18yourself. Because think about it this way.
- 2:20Typically we have certain days of the year that are quote UN
- 2:24quote the the the days we designate as the holiday, the
- 2:27important days. And then we make all the
- 2:30sacrifices around those to make other people happy than
- 2:35ourselves. And that highly is disturbing
- 2:38when you think about it that way and you say, well wait a second,
- 2:41you mean right? If if it's a a Hanukkah,
- 2:44Christmas, Kwanzaa, whatever the holiday you're you're.
- 2:49Celebrating with your family and you're and you're doing all the
- 2:52sacrificing for someone else and you're not focused on what's
- 2:55best for you and your family, then how is that going to work?
- 2:59How is that going to work for you?
- 3:01And this happens a lot, especially when you have
- 3:03children that are older and they're at the point where
- 3:05they're young adults now and they're in their 20s and they're
- 3:09they're subjected to, well, of course they want to go to, you
- 3:13know, their families things and they want to go to the their.
- 3:17Significant others family things.
- 3:19Or maybe they have a friend's Thanksgiving and they want to do
- 3:23that instead because it's a bunch of people that have
- 3:26decided they want to be together for the holiday and there's all
- 3:29kinds of ways to find a path to being offended.
- 3:34And if we start letting people push us around and pressure us
- 3:39into things that we know we don't want to do.
- 3:41We are sacrificing ourselves every single day, little by
- 3:46little, bit by bit, and especially leading up to it
- 3:48because it's scary. It's it's when you start
- 3:51thinking about it like, oh God, I'm going to have to go.
- 3:53It's going to be terrible. I'm going to be in there.
- 3:55It's going to be so hard. And if you're making all these
- 3:59sacrifices, knowing there are people that are toxic, that are
- 4:02there, it becomes even worse because now you're spending days
- 4:05ahead of time anticipating how much it's going to suck.
- 4:08Then you get there and you have to deal with how much it sucks.
- 4:11And then you leave and you feel completely depleted.
- 4:14You don't feel rejuvenated by the holidays.
- 4:17You know, if there's one thing that I can say with conviction
- 4:21for myself, I use my holidays and my, my, even my weekends as
- 4:27time where they are sacred to me.
- 4:29I have to use them to replenish myself, feel good focus, and
- 4:34create these memories that I know.
- 4:36I mean, I have very special memories.
- 4:39From when I was a child and holidays and I'll tell you
- 4:43those, I cherish those and I want to create those with my
- 4:46family as well and I think it's super important, super important
- 4:52that we. Recognize we we don't sacrifice.
- 4:55Now I will be first one to you know, admit my my parents always
- 5:00had an issue around Thanksgiving because my father loved was his
- 5:03favorite holiday and he wanted to have it with us.
- 5:05And he did not want to have it with my mother's family.
- 5:08And my mother's family would always say, well we want you and
- 5:12Kim to come. But they didn't want my father
- 5:14to come because they didn't like him.
- 5:16So it was a it was a thing. And my mother, you know, always
- 5:21felt torn and it was. It was something I was very
- 5:24unaware of until I was older. But you know, as I figured it
- 5:28out, I was really proud of my dad for putting his foot down
- 5:30and saying, no, we're going to have a good day together.
- 5:33And that's what we always did. And I felt bad that my mother
- 5:37felt torn between her family and my dad, but I respected her
- 5:42choice. So think about how much you're
- 5:44willing to sacrifice in this. Make a decision and be.
- 5:48Be really careful with trading away too much of yourself in the
- 5:51process because I promise you, you won't be happy long term and
- 5:55you're going to look back and say, why did I do that?
- 5:57So think this through, figure out what has to happen for you
- 6:01and your family, the people you choose to be with to be happy
- 6:05and stick to that. OK, my friends, I hope you have
- 6:08a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:10Bye.
