- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and our special guests.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The cutest manager in all of baseball that Ali's of
- 0:28Speaker 1: the show, and I know that it's going to yeah, no, uh,
- 0:33Speaker 1: it's gonna be a brutal half hour for me because
- 0:35Speaker 1: you're all going to take your shots. Ali, thanks for
- 0:38Speaker 1: coming on. You said you'd come on. You were on
- 0:41Speaker 1: the phone with Kyle Gibson during the last episode and
- 0:44Speaker 1: now you're on. So we're going to do our best
- 0:46Speaker 1: to muddle through this. Technically, I'm going to start Ali
- 0:49Speaker 1: by saying, you guys are off to a four and
- 0:52Speaker 1: three start, right. We see the bullpen starting to come together.
- 0:57Speaker 1: We've seen some good starts, some not so good. We've
- 0:59Speaker 1: seen like Walker hitting, certainly Herrera, there's a lot to like.
- 1:04Speaker 1: What over this first stretch of the season has jumped
- 1:07Speaker 1: out at you, the manager.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I would say it's been It's been good to see
- 1:14Speaker 2: what Walker is doing. He's done a really nice job.
- 1:17Speaker 2: You look at his spring and there is a lot
- 1:18Speaker 2: of work being put in, but the results still weren't there.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And for him to stick with the plan with Browning
- 1:24Speaker 2: and being that group and to continue to put in
- 1:30Speaker 2: the work without wavering and then getting some of the
- 1:31Speaker 2: results early on and building off of that confidence has
- 1:34Speaker 2: been fun. So we've been talking quite a bit. I've
- 1:37Speaker 2: had a feel a lot of questions as to what
- 1:39Speaker 2: is he going to be in the four hole And
- 1:41Speaker 2: the fact that that's even a topic is awesome to
- 1:43Speaker 2: me because several weeks back that wasn't anywhere close to
- 1:47Speaker 2: the conversation. So I love what he's doing. I love
- 1:50Speaker 2: the confidence that he's playing with. So that's that's been fun.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna follow up here, so I didn't talk to
- 1:58Speaker 1: brown He said he thinks the key is they reached
- 2:02Speaker 1: the Great Compromise with Walker, right. They took some of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the analytics data about body position and some of the
- 2:09Speaker 1: technical stuff and then sort of fused it with the
- 2:12Speaker 1: way Jordan likes doing it and feels comfortable doing it.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So he calls it the great Compromise. Do you see
- 2:19Speaker 1: it that way too?
- 2:21Speaker 2: If we can back up, because you dropped your mic
- 2:23Speaker 2: to start this whole thing, and then you said we're
- 2:25Speaker 2: four and three and we're five and four.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Five.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I just wanted to correct a couple of things there,
- 2:32Speaker 2: but with Jordan, with.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I was nervous that you are on.
- 2:39Speaker 2: With with Jordan, it is a little bit of a compromise,
- 2:42Speaker 2: and in a good way. When a player gets comfortable
- 2:44Speaker 2: enough to say, hey, this doesn't feel right. Is there
- 2:46Speaker 2: a different way of doing it and communicating in a
- 2:48Speaker 2: way where you can make adjustments, and that's where you
- 2:51Speaker 2: start to get somewhere. And with with him, I feel
- 2:54Speaker 2: like the and I've said this quite a bit on
- 2:56Speaker 2: a different on a different show, but it's uh early
- 3:00Speaker 2: on he would say yes and do things even if
- 3:04Speaker 2: he wasn't completely comfortable, And you get to a better
- 3:07Speaker 2: spot if you can just be honest and say, hey,
- 3:09Speaker 2: it's there a different way of getting to that same
- 3:11Speaker 2: thing that we're trying to get to. And he's done
- 3:13Speaker 2: a much better job of that. So the communication has
- 3:15Speaker 2: been super clear, His feedback has been awesome, and I
- 3:19Speaker 2: feel like we're getting to much better spots. So combination
- 3:22Speaker 2: of that whole hitting apartment and him has been has
- 3:25Speaker 2: been really good.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Well, you know, Jim's changed because he didn't even hit
- 3:30Speaker 3: his bag segment because he didn't want to see you
- 3:33Speaker 3: have you see him begging for people to follow.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So we need subscribers, all right, hit the subscribe, but
- 3:40Speaker 1: we want to get to seven thousand.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Golly, but I want to talk about these young kids
- 3:46Speaker 3: with you know, you got a younger group, it's kind
- 3:48Speaker 3: of a rebuild. How do you go about teaching him
- 3:50Speaker 3: how to play the game, but also introducing him and
- 3:52Speaker 3: try to learn the analytics on the fly to try to,
- 3:55Speaker 3: you know, help them. Like you said, fuse both of it,
- 3:57Speaker 3: whether it's pitching or the hitting aspect of it.
- 3:59Speaker 2: With this group, I with a young group, they tend
- 4:03Speaker 2: to already lean towards that analytical type of mindset. They've
- 4:06Speaker 2: grown up with it all their training sessions and the
- 4:09Speaker 2: off season. There's a lot of that already built in.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So it's less of that with this young group and
- 4:17Speaker 2: continuing to just pound the standard and allow them to
- 4:21Speaker 2: get excited about what the expectations and standards are. Man.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Spring training was awesome. I enjoyed the heck out of
- 4:27Speaker 2: it because Lance different than a lot of the other
- 4:31Speaker 2: years in Saint Louis. Whether it's not that one name
- 4:33Speaker 2: or two guys that you're looking to for every answer.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We created some topics that we wanted to just provoke thought,
- 4:40Speaker 2: let these guys talk about it in the clubhouse. We
- 4:42Speaker 2: would meet once a week and just seeing Mason and
- 4:46Speaker 2: Nude and Herrera and Libby and some of these guys,
- 4:49Speaker 2: man step up and speak to these topics and what
- 4:53Speaker 2: we want the style of play to look like. We
- 4:55Speaker 2: want to be a group that can tell each other
- 4:57Speaker 2: the truth and be honest and just how to play
- 4:59Speaker 2: the game the right way at the big league level.
- 5:03Speaker 2: That's been the fun part. And this group is is
- 5:06Speaker 2: hungry for what's next. You can have honest conversations with them, man,
- 5:09Speaker 2: but when it comes to blending the two, there's already
- 5:12Speaker 2: a lean because of the way they've been brought up
- 5:15Speaker 2: towards a lot of the biomac and analytics and just
- 5:20Speaker 2: continuing to teach how to play the game the right
- 5:23Speaker 2: way is is part of the job. But you look
- 5:26Speaker 2: at our staff and Pop and Stubby and and you
- 5:29Speaker 2: go down to the Scows and Jay man, these are
- 5:30Speaker 2: guys that are passionate about teaching how to play the game.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So it's been that's been probably the most fun.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Well hold on, I thought Jim boys asked the questions.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I was just sorry, We're.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Going to rotate asking questions follow the.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Program and all transparency and all transparency. I have just
- 5:59Speaker 4: been so flowed with this signal and stuff not working here.
- 6:02Speaker 4: We are technology. It's just you can tell I've already
- 6:04Speaker 4: moved locations, just trying to hear you. Guys. This has
- 6:07Speaker 4: been it's been not a great start, Ollie. I love
- 6:14Speaker 4: I was the one sixty two, right. I love the
- 6:17Speaker 4: fact that we're in this for the long haul and
- 6:19Speaker 4: you can't overreact and stuff like that. But looking at
- 6:24Speaker 4: this two ways, you said five and four, just so
- 6:27Speaker 4: fans know, if the team wins five out of nine games,
- 6:31Speaker 4: you're gonna be ninety and seventy two. Now every fan
- 6:34Speaker 4: would be like, oh wow, that's pretty awesome, But then
- 6:36Speaker 4: they say, oh, you know what, the Cardinals are off
- 6:38Speaker 4: to just an okay start? You know, man, I can't
- 6:41Speaker 4: believe Mason wins not going It's like, hold on, we
- 6:44Speaker 4: can't have this both ways. Right, Like, over the first
- 6:47Speaker 4: nine games, it's been fun to watch, and I think
- 6:48Speaker 4: Cardinals fans need to just appreciate that. But as you
- 6:52Speaker 4: see how this team's going together, and we've seen you
- 6:55Speaker 4: guys win in different ways, what are some of these
- 6:58Speaker 4: things that you are hammering home? To these young guys
- 7:02Speaker 4: with still teaching them how to win. Because everybody on
- 7:04Speaker 4: this show thinks this team, even though it's rebuilding, trys
- 7:08Speaker 4: a chance to have a good year and push for
- 7:10Speaker 4: a wild card or push the division if you play
- 7:13Speaker 4: this well. So what are some of those things that
- 7:16Speaker 4: you're teaching these young guys and really trying to hammer
- 7:18Speaker 4: home that, Like, Hey, whether this is a rebuilding year
- 7:21Speaker 4: or not, this is what we expect out of you guys,
- 7:24Speaker 4: and this is what we can do.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the one thing you can't do during time like
- 7:28Speaker 2: this is lower the standard. It has to remain what
- 7:31Speaker 2: it's always been. And even when you're a staff member, manager,
- 7:35Speaker 2: a coach in the minor leagues, like, you're developing guys,
- 7:38Speaker 2: but you want to develop them in a winning environment
- 7:41Speaker 2: and teach them how to be winning players. So you're
- 7:43Speaker 2: continuing to develop winning players, and it's no different, man, Like,
- 7:47Speaker 2: the one thing we've been hammering home is the style
- 7:49Speaker 2: of play, regardless of score, regardless of situation, Like, there
- 7:51Speaker 2: has to be a certain style in which we play
- 7:54Speaker 2: how we want the opposition to feel us, and we've
- 7:56Speaker 2: been able to demonstrate that in a couple different ways. Man,
- 7:58Speaker 2: Even that first series, when you look at getting punched
- 8:02Speaker 2: in the face for six runs and then being able
- 8:04Speaker 2: to punch right back for eight, that's one way of
- 8:08Speaker 2: never giving in and then the very next day to
- 8:11Speaker 2: have the lead and give it up and then still
- 8:12Speaker 2: find a way to walk them off. Like that's a
- 8:15Speaker 2: different feeling completely, because there's a little bit of a
- 8:18Speaker 2: different gut punch there. So I like the way we
- 8:21Speaker 2: have We've responded to a lot of situations up to
- 8:24Speaker 2: this point. You lose the first two in Detroit and
- 8:27Speaker 2: you come back and make sure you take that last game,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and that was a really good baseball game in a
- 8:32Speaker 2: lot of ways. So I like how we're responding. The
- 8:34Speaker 2: style of play has been there. There is energy there,
- 8:37Speaker 2: There is a relentless competitiveness to what these guys are
- 8:40Speaker 2: doing that I absolutely love. But there's still areas, man,
- 8:45Speaker 2: in that last series, where you're looking early on situationally
- 8:49Speaker 2: where the intent and execution weren't there, And we're just
- 8:52Speaker 2: going to have to continue to get better at those
- 8:54Speaker 2: things and be better in May than we weren't aprim
- 8:56Speaker 2: better in June than we were in May. So those
- 8:59Speaker 2: are the things that you lock in and on you
- 9:00Speaker 2: make sure, you pointed out the things that we're doing
- 9:03Speaker 2: well and continuing that, but also when you talk about
- 9:07Speaker 2: telling the truth, like here are the areas of improvement,
- 9:09Speaker 2: here's some opportunities that we missed on, and let's talk
- 9:13Speaker 2: through those as well. So I like our group. It's
- 9:17Speaker 2: an honest group you can do that with. So, yeah,
- 9:20Speaker 2: that's where we're at at the moment.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Jim, I got another question. No, we're not. No, Jim,
- 9:24Speaker 4: I got another one. Follow up.
- 9:25Speaker 1: At least do a verbal signal for some sort of
- 9:28Speaker 1: hand thing, you damn.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Thing, Jim, Just ship there and be quiet, all right?
- 9:33Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Follow up here, Ollie. So in twenty twenty four one
- 9:38Speaker 4: thing with the veteran group, I thought you really let
- 9:41Speaker 4: the locker room be the locker room. And there were
- 9:43Speaker 4: times where you came in and challenged us on, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 4: just man to man with a younger group. How are
- 9:50Speaker 4: you approaching that now? Grant you guys haven't gone through
- 9:53Speaker 4: a five game skit or anything, you know, tough like that,
- 9:56Speaker 4: But how are you planning on approaching that any different?
- 10:00Speaker 4: In the same letting mace or letting earlier, any of
- 10:03Speaker 4: these guys kind of handle that or what are you
- 10:06Speaker 4: kind of thinking of preparing yourself with going into the
- 10:08Speaker 4: locker room because it sounds like you're having more talks already.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Now you're spot on, and that's something that you keep
- 10:15Speaker 2: an eye on to see how it's being handled. And
- 10:17Speaker 2: there's been a lot of conversations with a decent amount
- 10:21Speaker 2: of this group as far as hey, there's going to
- 10:23Speaker 2: be a time where things aren't ideal and what does
- 10:27Speaker 2: that look like and who steps up and leads in
- 10:31Speaker 2: that clubhouse? But I think it's going to be a
- 10:33Speaker 2: collective effort because there's not one person that I believe
- 10:37Speaker 2: has to be the one to do it. But that
- 10:40Speaker 2: goes hand in hand with one of the topics that
- 10:42Speaker 2: we discussed that length, and it's man, we've got to
- 10:43Speaker 2: be able to tell each other the truth, and that's
- 10:45Speaker 2: player to player, that's coach a player and player to coach,
- 10:50Speaker 2: Like I have to carry myself in a way where
- 10:51Speaker 2: guys feel comfortable enough telling me if I'm doing something
- 10:53Speaker 2: that doesn't align with what our goals are. So it
- 10:58Speaker 2: we will go through a skin every team does, and
- 11:01Speaker 2: I'm actually looking forward to how these dudes handle that.
- 11:06Speaker 2: There's a time to step in, but there's also time
- 11:08Speaker 2: to kind of see what that group does and how
- 11:11Speaker 2: they go about it, and I think there's an opportunity
- 11:14Speaker 2: at some point in the season, there'll be an opportunity
- 11:17Speaker 2: for both. But uh, things go much better when that
- 11:21Speaker 2: clubhouse is able to kind of hold each other accountable.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Doesn't mean that the staff or the manager doesn't step
- 11:28Speaker 2: in from time to time, but you guys have been
- 11:30Speaker 2: on really good teams and usually you guys hold each
- 11:32Speaker 2: other accountable to a pretty high degree.
- 11:36Speaker 1: If you could share with us your relationship Jim, can
- 11:41Speaker 1: you can we step him and just go to Lance.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Make it a good one.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Last one?
- 11:49Speaker 1: I'm right, Mo, you had relationships obviously since you've been
- 11:54Speaker 1: manager two different president of Baseball Operations. Tell us about
- 11:58Speaker 1: your relationship with him and is it similar to mo
- 12:01Speaker 1: or he's in your office, open channel of communication, kind
- 12:05Speaker 1: of share with the viewers, and there are quite a
- 12:08Speaker 1: few what that relationship is like.
- 12:12Speaker 2: That's beautiful. It's been great, and I think one of
- 12:16Speaker 2: the things that has helped is that he's been around
- 12:20Speaker 2: for the last two years prior to holding the seat right,
- 12:23Speaker 2: so we were able to build that relationship and start
- 12:26Speaker 2: to build some of that trust and you build it
- 12:28Speaker 2: a lot quicker when both of you guys are in
- 12:31Speaker 2: a position of decision making. So my relationship with Moe
- 12:36Speaker 2: was great. He treated me extremely well over the years,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and with him stepping in man, it was a seamless transition.
- 12:43Speaker 2: There was never a period of awkwardness where they were
- 12:46Speaker 2: both there and who do I kind of communicate with?
- 12:49Speaker 2: They were able to separate kind of responsibilities in a
- 12:52Speaker 2: way that made it super easy on me last year
- 12:54Speaker 2: and then now this year, that built in trust is there.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I love the way things have gone to this point.
- 13:01Speaker 2: The communication has been great. The integration with certain members
- 13:05Speaker 2: of the front office like Surf and others has been
- 13:08Speaker 2: has been awesome. But this is a guy that's super
- 13:12Speaker 2: smart and cares about people. He cares about the people
- 13:16Speaker 2: that are in it day to day. He has empathy
- 13:19Speaker 2: for the difficulties that come with our jobs, with the
- 13:23Speaker 2: hitting department, of the pitching department and everything that goes
- 13:25Speaker 2: with it. Man, So there's a there's a level of
- 13:27Speaker 2: process that he brings to the table. But then the
- 13:31Speaker 2: people part of this he does a really good job
- 13:34Speaker 2: with and I've enjoyed kind of learning a little bit
- 13:36Speaker 2: more of that side. Of him, But up to this point,
- 13:40Speaker 2: it's been it's been awesome.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Hey listen on JJ real quick. Is there a time
- 13:46Speaker 3: and spring training that you saw were like, hey, this
- 13:49Speaker 3: guy's is there like an it factor a time where
- 13:51Speaker 3: like this guy's give that lead off for me and
- 13:52Speaker 3: play second, or was like you're going into it like hey,
- 13:55Speaker 3: I already know I got my guy, Or was there
- 13:57Speaker 3: something that just said, hey, he's here and he's gonna
- 13:59Speaker 3: stay man.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It was actually the spring training before where he came
- 14:05Speaker 2: in and he hit one backside and just stood up
- 14:09Speaker 2: on it and just hit it, stood there for a
- 14:11Speaker 2: minute round and you can just tell him the way
- 14:13Speaker 2: he was running the bases came in there. There's this
- 14:15Speaker 2: level of just calmness and a confidence to him that
- 14:20Speaker 2: you would have thought he was in his fifth, sixth,
- 14:22Speaker 2: seventh spring training. It was impressive to watch the way
- 14:27Speaker 2: he carried himself. And there's times lands but you go
- 14:29Speaker 2: talk to a young dude and they're just wide eyed
- 14:32Speaker 2: and the cadence in which you're speaking is just super
- 14:34Speaker 2: fast and sped up, and there's never any of that.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And I love when you can have a conversation with
- 14:41Speaker 2: the guy and they're not seeking your approval at all,
- 14:44Speaker 2: Like that's that's a really good thing. And we get
- 14:47Speaker 2: into spring training this year and I've told this story
- 14:51Speaker 2: where I mean he spent a lot of time working
- 14:52Speaker 2: on his backhand and just making sure he tightened that up.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And the first couple of plays he gets in the spring,
- 14:57Speaker 2: he boots both of them, and the next day go
- 15:00Speaker 2: up and I'm having a conversation about about the play,
- 15:02Speaker 2: and there's just a calmness to the way he was explaining,
- 15:05Speaker 2: here's what happened, here's what I need to get better at,
- 15:07Speaker 2: here's how I'm gonna go about it and get there.
- 15:10Speaker 2: And it was very matter of fact. So there isn't
- 15:12Speaker 2: it factor to him where it's he knows who he is.
- 15:17Speaker 2: There's gonna be periods where he struggles and that's fine,
- 15:19Speaker 2: but I think he'll be able to handle that better
- 15:21Speaker 2: than most. So we went in. I knew we wanted
- 15:26Speaker 2: this guy to break with this does a matter? Can
- 15:28Speaker 2: he handle the lead off spot even if it doesn't
- 15:31Speaker 2: go well? And the longer we got in the sprint
- 15:33Speaker 2: and I got to learn a little bit more about him,
- 15:35Speaker 2: it was clear that that that would be the case.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Love it, love it all we're gonna let you go.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Hold on, where's the coffee from today? You guys got
- 15:44Speaker 4: in late.
- 15:45Speaker 1: We're letting him go. We're not done yet.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Hey, he's got a bust to catch. He's got to go.
- 15:50Speaker 4: He's got a busted catch. He's got to get to
- 15:52Speaker 4: the field, Jimmy, he's got things to do today. He's
- 15:54Speaker 4: got a game to win.
- 15:55Speaker 2: It's that Commonwealth place down downstairs. It's a it's a
- 15:59Speaker 2: good spot. It's a good spot. Jim You had one
- 16:01Speaker 2: more quick, no, no, no.
- 16:04Speaker 1: More? You want to know and then we'll let you go.
- 16:09Speaker 1: The latest on Mason car accident. He's fine after that,
- 16:14Speaker 1: but there was he's dealing with some that was before
- 16:18Speaker 1: the car accident. So give us an update on his health.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, he's gonna go ahead and go through his pregame
- 16:25Speaker 2: work today. Yesterday I was freezing in Detroit. He was
- 16:29Speaker 2: able to do a decent amount of it, but not
- 16:30Speaker 2: all of it. So we want to make sure he
- 16:32Speaker 2: checks a couple of boxes before giving him the green light.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So we'll take care of that. They're in early work
- 16:37Speaker 2: today and then see where we're at all.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Right, Ollie, have you got to go?
- 16:41Speaker 3: We appreciate you dropping by when you put him in
- 16:44Speaker 3: the two hole and here in the four.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I see, I almost got out of here without this?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Is that your best version?
- 16:55Speaker 3: So we were talking about it. We were thinking about
- 16:57Speaker 3: how would you navigate that lineup if you're gonna deal
- 16:59Speaker 3: with those two pets at the top and then Burley
- 17:02Speaker 3: who doesn't strike out, and then next thing you know,
- 17:04Speaker 3: you got two guys on and Parre's got you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: and I understand what you're saying about the the double
- 17:09Speaker 3: play ball right in the in the fore hole, and
- 17:11Speaker 3: Mason doesn't strike out either.
- 17:12Speaker 2: It also doesn't help. And I think we're having a
- 17:16Speaker 2: different conversation of Mace gets off to the start that
- 17:19Speaker 2: he would have hoped for, we would have hope for,
- 17:20Speaker 2: right like, if he does what I know he's capable of,
- 17:23Speaker 2: I think this conversation's different. So do you give it
- 17:26Speaker 2: time for that to take place, or do you or
- 17:29Speaker 2: do you switch it up. It's been interesting to see
- 17:32Speaker 2: a couple of the combinations of the Walker Gorman kind
- 17:36Speaker 2: of flip there. It happened exactly like we talked about
- 17:39Speaker 2: Gibbie and then the sixth then and they threw that
- 17:41Speaker 2: lefty right through that four lane and there's not a
- 17:45Speaker 2: whole lot you can do about it, which I'm okay
- 17:46Speaker 2: with JJ and Burley and those guys learning how to
- 17:48Speaker 2: stay in there against lefties. Gorman has a decent job
- 17:51Speaker 2: against some in the past. So depending on Mace's availability today,
- 17:56Speaker 2: we may see a different, different line of construction. I'm
- 18:00Speaker 2: not sure it's the one you just pumped out, Lance,
- 18:04Speaker 2: but what I hear you.
- 18:06Speaker 3: My only worry is because you get guys like Jim
- 18:09Speaker 3: who wants to turn Mason into a thirty home run
- 18:11Speaker 3: short stuff and Mason leads off.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Then j all right, Jim talking.
- 18:20Speaker 3: So I was worried of putting Mason in the four hole.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Mason likes to be the guy, But do you worry
- 18:26Speaker 3: about him trying to drive the ball and maybe try
- 18:28Speaker 3: to hit more home runs and get out of this
- 18:29Speaker 3: game a little bit. That's my only worry.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Nope, you're You're spot on. And if I if we
- 18:33Speaker 2: didn't have multiple conversations around that exact topic initiated by
- 18:38Speaker 2: him not wanting to be that, then I would have
- 18:41Speaker 2: been a little bit more timid in doing it. But yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 2: you're spot on with that.
- 18:47Speaker 3: You are that That's my only worry. But I do
- 18:49Speaker 3: like man. Remember when we were in twenty four when
- 18:51Speaker 3: we put Mason at the top. It's he's a spark
- 18:54Speaker 3: plug man, especially when when he starts feeling it, that
- 18:57Speaker 3: whole team kind of feeds off a little bit.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Thanks Jeff, you're welcome.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Get off of it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Thank you, I.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Thank you, brother, See you guys all right, say thank you.
- 19:13Speaker 1: All right. We had Olie Martin with us. That was
- 19:15Speaker 1: pretty great, Kyle, even though you took some shot. I
- 19:19Speaker 1: want to thank you for sort of reaching out to
- 19:23Speaker 1: him and and setting this in motion.
- 19:25Speaker 4: We are going to take it, I think, break okay,
- 19:29Speaker 4: I think, and then.
- 19:31Speaker 1: We're gonna come back more to get to hold those thoughts.
- 19:34Speaker 1: You're watching Cardinal Territory on the file Territory now.

- 20:02Speaker 6: code right, yeah?

- 20:31Speaker 5: games going on right now. There are hot tickets across
- 20:34Speaker 5: the country, so make sure you go to Sea Geek.
- 20:37Speaker 5: They will take care of.
- 20:38Speaker 1: You all right. To start the show, I have misstated
- 20:42Speaker 1: the cardinal record. Knock the microphone over because I was nervous.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Now it's just the chuckleheads are here, so we're good.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Here's what I want to ask you, guys.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I want to ask you guys Weatherhole. Ali gave a
- 20:58Speaker 1: great response to when he knew he had something Kyle,
- 21:01Speaker 1: we keep reading about the possibility of extending him. Is
- 21:06Speaker 1: now the time? And if you were in the front office,
- 21:08Speaker 1: would you, uh, would you extend JJ at this point
- 21:12Speaker 1: to lock him up in a little.
- 21:15Speaker 4: I'm all right, so I'm gonna look at this from
- 21:18Speaker 4: a player perspective and probably pretty cynical here, and probably
- 21:24Speaker 4: a little tin hat conspiracy. Okay, there's a CBA coming
- 21:29Speaker 4: up in in eight months here. Not very often do
- 21:35Speaker 4: you see a lot of young guys in this type
- 21:38Speaker 4: of a flurry get deal before their debut, right after
- 21:44Speaker 4: their debut, or this close to their debut in general.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I don't really know what all is going into it.
- 21:54Speaker 4: If you can get JJ Weatherholt on a long term
- 21:58Speaker 4: and extension, I am, I'm good with it. But I mean, obviously,
- 22:04Speaker 4: I think these teams are seeing something coming down the
- 22:07Speaker 4: pipeline that maybe media and everybody else isn't And I
- 22:11Speaker 4: kind of wonder if this is, you know, what is
- 22:14Speaker 4: kind of going on here? Do I think? Now back
- 22:17Speaker 4: to my you know, kind of non ten hat. In
- 22:23Speaker 4: my mind, any type of an extension like these guys
- 22:25Speaker 4: are getting is a good deal for the player. Okay.
- 22:29Speaker 4: The chances of Connor of Connor Griffin making one hundred
- 22:35Speaker 4: and forty million over the first nine years of his career,
- 22:38Speaker 4: he might be a great player, the chances of him
- 22:40Speaker 4: doing it are low without this extension. Now granted once again,
- 22:44Speaker 4: he's a great player, right, Okay, he gave up some
- 22:46Speaker 4: free agent years. But is a great deal for Connor
- 22:50Speaker 4: Griffin and for the players to get these deals. I
- 22:52Speaker 4: just get it kind of sends up my intendance here
- 22:55Speaker 4: a little bit when I see all these deals being
- 22:58Speaker 4: given out to guys who really haven't played yet. Great
- 23:01Speaker 4: for the player, pumped up for each of them, Great
- 23:04Speaker 4: for the fans that think that that now are going
- 23:06Speaker 4: to get to see these guys for long term because
- 23:09Speaker 4: it's I think it's great for the fan bases. I
- 23:12Speaker 4: always think it's a good time to lock out players
- 23:15Speaker 4: to extensions. So if now as something the Cardinals want
- 23:17Speaker 4: to do, I would do it. See if you can
- 23:19Speaker 4: get JJ locked in. But I don't know. I think
- 23:24Speaker 4: it is a little interesting, especially pre orb you know,
- 23:27Speaker 4: before you find out how a guy's going to react
- 23:28Speaker 4: to the big leagues, you know, giving out a big extension.
- 23:32Speaker 3: What about you, Lance, I mean, anytime you can sign
- 23:36Speaker 3: a deal that's going to give you a hundred million
- 23:37Speaker 3: dollars before you played a game in the big leagues,
- 23:39Speaker 3: you take it, and you're gonna be like, they're gonna
- 23:42Speaker 3: be a free agent by thirty. You're hitting all the
- 23:44Speaker 3: things that you hope to hit, especially the younger they are,
- 23:48Speaker 3: so uh, there is something fishy about the amount of them.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Maybe there's just like, hey, they're worried about them going up,
- 23:55Speaker 3: so everybody's just kind of jumping on the board and
- 23:57Speaker 3: just filing in. But you're looking at JJ, even Mason
- 24:02Speaker 3: and guys like that. I would anybody that you see
- 24:05Speaker 3: as your young core, I would figure out what it
- 24:07Speaker 3: looks like so you can get cost certainty. You don't
- 24:10Speaker 3: know what the next CBA is going to look like.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Maybe there's gonna be these contracts are grandfathered in, so
- 24:14Speaker 3: if there's if they think there's a cap, these long
- 24:17Speaker 3: term deals are grandfathered in so they don't hit the
- 24:19Speaker 3: cap in a certain way. Maybe to get the cap,
- 24:23Speaker 3: they know that they're gonna have to give up free
- 24:25Speaker 3: agency years or arm years to where you can get
- 24:27Speaker 3: to a free agency faster. So they're locking these guys
- 24:30Speaker 3: up if they're like, oh, we can get the free
- 24:31Speaker 3: agency after four years, or you get the arbitration after two,
- 24:35Speaker 3: because you're gonna have to give something up to get
- 24:37Speaker 3: the cap system that they're entailing. So now it's like, oh,
- 24:40Speaker 3: I got this guy for nine instead of four, and
- 24:42Speaker 3: then he hit three agency. So there's a there's a
- 24:44Speaker 3: lot of different things going on right now that the
- 24:47Speaker 3: league are out in front of and the ownerships are
- 24:50Speaker 3: out in front of what you're seeing, and that's part
- 24:53Speaker 3: of it. But whenever you can give yourself one hundred
- 24:55Speaker 3: million dollars and you're twenty one years old, you take
- 24:58Speaker 3: it and then you worry about the next one when
- 25:00Speaker 3: it comes, and you just worry about getting it being
- 25:02Speaker 3: as good of the players again.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Seems like a win win to me. If you're a
- 25:06Speaker 1: young player you mentioned you can get generational wealth, you
- 25:09Speaker 1: take it. If you're a team like the Pirates maybe
- 25:12Speaker 1: the Cardinals, right, you're going to invest in something now
- 25:16Speaker 1: because if not, that talent could be playing somewhere else
- 25:20Speaker 1: and your fan base is going to see another star
- 25:23Speaker 1: that started with you playing somewhere else. So there's some risk,
- 25:26Speaker 1: but I understand it, and I think it's kind of
- 25:28Speaker 1: win win for both. All Right, you guys are both
- 25:30Speaker 1: pitchers with a lot of pitching knowledge, not technical no
- 25:35Speaker 1: how sometimes with the podcast, but pitching no, how I
- 25:39Speaker 1: want to see Kyle smile. There it is. Dustin May
- 25:42Speaker 1: has had a couple of starts. A veteran guy, but
- 25:45Speaker 1: track record of injury, trying to reset, had a really
- 25:48Speaker 1: good spring fastball ninety eight miles an hour, and he's
- 25:52Speaker 1: had a couple of bad starts. Just your thoughts on
- 25:56Speaker 1: what to make of that, Kyle, if you were still
- 25:58Speaker 1: affiliated with the organizem.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Jim, you know what, I knew you were going to
- 26:05Speaker 4: ask this question, and I honestly this is what I
- 26:09Speaker 4: was going to do. I didn't do it because I
- 26:10Speaker 4: thought it was a little rude. I was going to
- 26:13Speaker 4: stop you mid question, say stop it, Jim, all right,
- 26:16Speaker 4: just stop. It's two starts, just stop, all right. So
- 26:21Speaker 4: I'm gonna say this now after the fact, because I
- 26:23Speaker 4: once again I didn't want to be rude. I think
- 26:26Speaker 4: any any worry or any panic can just hold off here,
- 26:37Speaker 4: all right, because it's kind of and honestly, this is man.
- 26:40Speaker 4: I love how this played out. This is exactly why
- 26:43Speaker 4: I wanted to ask Olie and mentioned that five and
- 26:46Speaker 4: four over nine games is a ninety win ball club,
- 26:48Speaker 4: all right, So like we're not just automatically going to say, oh, Wow,
- 26:52Speaker 4: the Cardinals are five and four, son of their ninety wins.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Just like we're not going to say, man, Dustin May
- 26:57Speaker 4: is really struggling. He must stink like no, it's two starts,
- 27:01Speaker 4: all right. He can go out and have two good
- 27:05Speaker 4: starts where he gives up one run a start, and
- 27:07Speaker 4: his era is going to look pretty pretty normal for
- 27:10Speaker 4: an MLB starter is going to look over a long season.
- 27:12Speaker 4: So no panic, no worry. I think he's gonna be
- 27:17Speaker 4: fine here in five months. Maybe this old turn around
- 27:21Speaker 4: and I'll look like an idiot. I don't know, but
- 27:24Speaker 4: I will refuse until June or July to really maybe
- 27:30Speaker 4: not June end of May, to start talking bad about
- 27:35Speaker 4: players who are struggling, and start, you know, making the
- 27:39Speaker 4: decision time to worry about this player. We signed up
- 27:43Speaker 4: for one sixty two, so let's watch one sixty two.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Fair enough. For the record, I did say two starts.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I did talk about track record. No one's panicking here.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I was just asking for a reaction. For example, Jordan
- 27:58Speaker 1: Walker is off to a great start. We talked a
- 28:00Speaker 1: lot about that. No one's saying he's going to be
- 28:02Speaker 1: the National League MVP. But as a podcast focused on
- 28:06Speaker 1: the Cardinals. We're going to talk about what's happening.
- 28:10Speaker 4: I know, sometimes I get a little carried away with
- 28:13Speaker 4: getting on your top of your questions, and I kind
- 28:15Speaker 4: of feel like that's what I'm supposed to do here.
- 28:17Speaker 4: You don't ask Lance those type of questions because you
- 28:20Speaker 4: know like he's just gonna say something, So you ask
- 28:22Speaker 4: me those questions, and then I feel like I have
- 28:24Speaker 4: to respond, so I apologize. Maybe I got a little
- 28:28Speaker 4: I got a little eager there, but I think some
- 28:29Speaker 4: of it was because I was prepared for the question.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I knew it was coming and I really wanted to
- 28:34Speaker 4: hammer it home, and I probably got a little too
- 28:36Speaker 4: eager there.
- 28:37Speaker 1: So he did a good job.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I formally apologized.
- 28:39Speaker 1: You did a good job. Now, look, I'm scared of
- 28:42Speaker 1: both of you because you're both giants compared to me
- 28:44Speaker 1: and just a little fellow. But Lance, two games in
- 28:47Speaker 1: and let me ask you this, because you signed with
- 28:49Speaker 1: new teams, is there also an element of a guy
- 28:52Speaker 1: wanting to show he's healthy and to show he still
- 28:57Speaker 1: has it that maybe could amp him up a little
- 29:00Speaker 1: too much.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Again, I've never pitched in the big leagues. Just a
- 29:03Speaker 3: thought your reaction, Yeah, I'll go to a personal thing.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Kyle and I were first teammates in Minnesota. I stunk
- 29:11Speaker 3: in Minnesota. Well, I was the worst. I was late
- 29:14Speaker 3: to spring training just bad. There's really no way to say.
- 29:19Speaker 3: I started turning around mid May, and then I ended
- 29:22Speaker 3: up getting traded and had a really good second half
- 29:24Speaker 3: with the Yankees after I kind of got gotten the
- 29:27Speaker 3: groove and this and that. Dustin's been with a Dodgers
- 29:30Speaker 3: his whole career. Did get traded a little bit last year,
- 29:32Speaker 3: but he got hurt after he got traded, had his
- 29:35Speaker 3: most career innings. First time to free agency. He knows
- 29:39Speaker 3: it's kind of a prove it deal, so there could
- 29:41Speaker 3: be a little bit of pressure. New team knew everything,
- 29:44Speaker 3: and it's not fun when your first time in at
- 29:46Speaker 3: new spring training knew everything. He's throwing the ball well
- 29:48Speaker 3: in spring training, but it is spring training and half
- 29:51Speaker 3: the guys you face every day are not even in
- 29:53Speaker 3: the big leagues right now, so there's a different way
- 29:55Speaker 3: of going about things that he's got to get used to.
- 29:57Speaker 3: He's got to get used to the catchers, he's got
- 29:59Speaker 3: to get used to the environment that he's in, and
- 30:01Speaker 3: then he just seems to take a deep breath because
- 30:03Speaker 3: it is a long season. It is one sixty two.
- 30:06Speaker 3: I had my worst year ever career wise that year,
- 30:08Speaker 3: and I still ended up with under a five. Vra
- 30:11Speaker 3: started thirty games in one. I started thirty games in
- 30:14Speaker 3: one over ten and I had it and that was
- 30:16Speaker 3: my worst year in my career pretty much. So it
- 30:19Speaker 3: does suck, and it is like an adjustment period. But
- 30:22Speaker 3: the only thing I worry about mentally right I think
- 30:24Speaker 3: he said some things where it's like I'm kind of
- 30:26Speaker 3: lost right now, or you know, I got to figure
- 30:28Speaker 3: it out type thing that scares you a little bit
- 30:31Speaker 3: when you hear him speak like that. But I think
- 30:33Speaker 3: he's also a truth teller where it's like, hey, what
- 30:35Speaker 3: I'm doing right now is not working. I got to
- 30:37Speaker 3: figure something out. But he's kind of he's kind of free,
- 30:41Speaker 3: a little bit of a free spirit, where it's gonna
- 30:43Speaker 3: be like, yeah, I'm lost right now, I'm gonna figure
- 30:45Speaker 3: something out. You can take that as a oh man,
- 30:48Speaker 3: he's never going to figure it out, or this guy's cooked.
- 30:51Speaker 3: It's like, Nah, what's going on right now is not
- 30:53Speaker 3: going to is not working, So I'm gonna figure it
- 30:55Speaker 3: out over the next course of the next one, because
- 30:57Speaker 3: what I got going on is not it. So he's
- 30:59Speaker 3: gonna get walk back in and doing what he does best.
- 31:01Speaker 3: And I think Dusty will do a good job of
- 31:04Speaker 3: kind of writing that ship and helping him there too.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And like I said, it is two starts, not the
- 31:09Speaker 3: best two starts, but you know you can rite all
- 31:11Speaker 3: off three and you're right back where you need to go.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes you get off to a rough start, just
- 31:16Speaker 1: two starts, we get it. The good news is at
- 31:19Speaker 1: the Cardinals at this point at the taping of this
- 31:22Speaker 1: product five and four, and a lot of things going
- 31:25Speaker 1: in a good direction. Gentlemen, you were brilliant. We had
- 31:28Speaker 1: Ali on, We put our big bully pants on, except
- 31:31Speaker 1: for a few shots coming my way in front of
- 31:33Speaker 1: the manager. Overall, I thought it was informative and entertaining.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Thank you for your participation, and that's going to do
- 31:41Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
- 31:44Speaker 1: for the next episode and hopefully that one won't suck.
