- 0:04Speaker 1: Busy.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I had my boots on the ground in Chapel Hill,
- 0:07Speaker 2: North Carolina, trying to get to the bottom of what's
- 0:10Speaker 2: going on with their basketball program.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I found out nothing.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I found Taylor's jersey hanging in a local bar in
- 0:18Speaker 2: Chapel Hill, but I found out nothing. And that's why
- 0:21Speaker 2: we're gonna have j Billison in about fifteen minutes. Because
- 0:25Speaker 2: the boots were on the ground, but the people weren't
- 0:27Speaker 2: walking towards.
- 0:28Speaker 1: The boots and weren't giving me the information that I needed.
- 0:31Speaker 3: So I still I come back from Chapel Hill.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I did my best, not knowing who the next North
- 0:35Speaker 2: Carolina head coach is going to be.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Do you think maybe part of your problem is you
- 0:40Speaker 4: were getting that information or trying to get that information
- 0:43Speaker 4: at bars.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, I was trying to find Taylor's jersey because I
- 0:46Speaker 2: didn't believe that one actually hung at a bar in
- 0:49Speaker 2: Chapel Hill. But I was wrong because I found it
- 0:52Speaker 2: and it was hanging. It was hanging on a wall.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It's a popular bar there. I can't remember the name.
- 0:57Speaker 2: It was right next to my hotel, but I remember,
- 1:00Speaker 2: is Taylor's jersey hanging right next to the men's bathroom
- 1:03Speaker 2: how about that?
- 1:04Speaker 3: So I try to tip you off that the jersey, Yes,
- 1:07Speaker 3: it's there, But when you were going too, I said,
- 1:11Speaker 3: I just have to warn you. It's in a terrible spot.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It's like right by the bathroom. It couldn't be closer.
- 1:19Speaker 4: How many jerseys are on the wall roughly in better spots, Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 4: a ton of jerseys. So did you actually have to
- 1:25Speaker 4: do work to get that jersey up there, Taylor? Or
- 1:28Speaker 4: was that a sort of like right of passage?
- 1:30Speaker 3: I went there so much while I was in school
- 1:33Speaker 3: that a bunch of guys from the team that also
- 1:36Speaker 3: went there gave their jerseys to Pantana Bob's, and then
- 1:40Speaker 3: Pantanta Bob's is the one that got him framed and
- 1:42Speaker 3: placed them. I used to be right by the entrance,
- 1:46Speaker 3: and then they did like renovations, and somewhere in the renovations,
- 1:51Speaker 3: I got bumped to the bathroom.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, perhaps they realized whose jerseys were hanging in that place,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and they said, let's rearrange these things.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Why is Viipplis out front of this guy? Shit?
- 2:02Speaker 3: The most embarrassing thing from that jersey framing Stu. I
- 2:06Speaker 3: don't know if you noticed, but under where the jersey
- 2:09Speaker 3: is there's a picture of me playing football, and that
- 2:12Speaker 3: was after my sophomore year and they were like, hey,
- 2:15Speaker 3: we need a picture of you while you played. And
- 2:18Speaker 3: I was like, hey, I don't have a picture of.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Those are few and far between, sir. Yes, I'm like.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I'm a sophomore walk on receiver. You're not going to
- 2:27Speaker 3: find too many action photos. So what they had to
- 2:31Speaker 3: do boys practice. They gave me the uniform and made
- 2:36Speaker 3: me come in on an off day to do a
- 2:38Speaker 3: photo shoot for this jersey frame.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I show.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It looks like what it looks like a whatever, a
- 2:49Speaker 4: posed photo from like a yearbook.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Yes, so that photo was probably taken at about seven
- 2:55Speaker 3: am on a Saturday morning during spring.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Wow, you're gonna get hung up on.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Wasn't able to place what bubbs Pantana, Pantana Bob.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You gotta do what you gotta do, you know.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yes, Well I walked into Pantana Bob's and I asked,
- 3:08Speaker 2: Bob or Pantana or whoever.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I said, where's the Vippalis jersey?
- 3:13Speaker 1: And they said, who.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You give me a couple more years here doing this
- 3:20Speaker 3: podcast on the radio show on Fox Sports Radio Legend.
- 3:23Speaker 3: That's gonna be the first stop that they he stop
- 3:25Speaker 3: on the Prospective Students Tour. You'll be doing a live
- 3:28Speaker 3: show from there pretty soon. I guarantee it.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I'm telling you this puts a lot of pressure when
- 3:33Speaker 4: I saw you do that video.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yes, I was like, I put a lot of pressure
- 3:36Speaker 1: on Taylor for our flag football.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Team because not only was he a walk on, but
- 3:40Speaker 4: he's a famous walk on. He has his jersey somehow
- 3:43Speaker 4: retired by the shitter of a subplace.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yes, but with no action photos.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I mean that's action in that photo.
- 3:50Speaker 3: There's actual Taylor.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Is that the longest you wore the uniform?
- 3:54Speaker 5: Uh?
- 3:55Speaker 6: Now?
- 3:55Speaker 3: Some of the games I'm just standing on the sideline,
- 3:57Speaker 3: just just roasting in the Carolina sun.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That's how you kept losing weight.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I was at the Northwestern North Carolina lacrosse game.
- 4:07Speaker 7: What a game?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Oh, a rematch of the national championship from a year ago.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Northwestern won that game. It's the first time Carolina has
- 4:15Speaker 2: lost at home in like two years, and the last
- 4:17Speaker 2: time they lost was to Northwestern. It was a great game,
- 4:21Speaker 2: but Taylor spent the entire time texting me because he's
- 4:23Speaker 2: watching it on TV and he's.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Like, hey, Belichick's there.
- 4:26Speaker 2: He's in the house, to which I responded, Belichick went
- 4:30Speaker 2: to North Carolina simply to watch lacrosse, Like that's all
- 4:33Speaker 2: he does. He loves lacrosse. They have a men's and
- 4:36Speaker 2: women's team, they are two of the best programs in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the country. And all he does, I'm told this is
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm told boots on the ground. Okay, Is he hangs
- 4:45Speaker 2: around the lacrosse practice. I mean, perhaps you should hang
- 4:47Speaker 2: around the football practice.
- 4:48Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 4:48Speaker 4: So, Taylor, your girlfriend was not exaggerating at all when
- 4:52Speaker 4: you said when she told us you are always watching sports,
- 4:56Speaker 4: because if you're watching a women's lacrosse I know it stews.
- 4:59Speaker 4: But how'd you find like were you were you gonna
- 5:01Speaker 4: watch that anyway or were you just watching it because
- 5:03Speaker 4: Stu was there?
- 5:04Speaker 3: So this is this is a new world for you?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Is he?
- 5:08Speaker 3: ESPN Plus has got everything you could possibly want.
- 5:12Speaker 1: All of them. Yeah, But the thing is you want it?
- 5:14Speaker 1: Is my point. I don't think I would ever want that.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I'm a sports guy through and through, and I only
- 5:20Speaker 3: I was really only watching that game because I knew
- 5:23Speaker 3: Stu was at the game.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Right.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yes, but for the most part, I've kind of been
- 5:28Speaker 3: on the record. I'm not watching much movies. I'm not
- 5:31Speaker 3: watching much TV shows. If there's a MAC game on Tuesday,
- 5:35Speaker 3: you can bet your ass on I'm gonna be watching it.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And if there was a game to watch women's lacrosse,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I understand people aren't interested.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I understand why.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I get it, okay, But.
- 5:43Speaker 1: If there was a game to watch last night was
- 5:46Speaker 1: the game of the regular season, that's fine, I get it.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I was just shocked because when you were talking and
- 5:52Speaker 4: you said, oh, there's this great and then Tyler just Taylor,
- 5:55Speaker 4: Taylor just jumped right in and said great game. I
- 5:58Speaker 4: was like, wait a second, what are we talking now?
- 6:00Speaker 4: Did I hear you right? Did he actually just jump
- 6:02Speaker 4: in it's a great game on a lacrosse game, meaning
- 6:04Speaker 4: he watched it from start to finish.
- 6:06Speaker 1: He did. I believe he did.
- 6:07Speaker 2: But Taylor also has tried to convince me, and I
- 6:10Speaker 2: think he sent a message to my daughter last night,
- 6:12Speaker 2: which is totally cool.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I love that.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I love the bond, I love the friendship, I love
- 6:15Speaker 2: the support. Taylor, thank you for that. But he said,
- 6:19Speaker 2: I tried to convince your dad that when I watch
- 6:21Speaker 2: women's lacrosse, I'm rooting for Northwestern, and he doesn't believe me.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He thinks I'm rooting for North Carolina. That's the truth.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I don't believe him.
- 6:28Speaker 3: First off is, hey, it was a great game. Every
- 6:31Speaker 3: time Carolina scored, Northwestern had an answer, and they forced
- 6:35Speaker 3: that game to overtime.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yes, great save by the goalie.
- 6:39Speaker 3: But also when it comes to Carolina, Yes, I'm a
- 6:43Speaker 3: Carolina fan. Carolina basketball, Carolina football, even Carolina baseball. Yeah, Stu,
- 6:50Speaker 3: the Humphrey sisters playing Carolina lacrosse.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They're good.
- 6:54Speaker 3: It does nothing for me though, really if I could, no,
- 6:58Speaker 3: they're really good.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, I mean they're unbelievable.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean number number two on North Carolina, I can't
- 7:04Speaker 2: remember her first name, is it Chloe Humphrey.
- 7:07Speaker 3: There's three of them.
- 7:08Speaker 2: She was, There's three sisters. They played together obviously their
- 7:11Speaker 2: entire lives. They know exactly where where the other is
- 7:14Speaker 2: going to be. One of them was the player of
- 7:17Speaker 2: the year last year in college lacrosse.
- 7:19Speaker 3: So but Izzy, my point to that is, I'm not
- 7:22Speaker 3: rooting for people that I don't really know. Where As
- 7:26Speaker 3: for the Northwestern team, I have a connection to that team.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I want to see Stu Gotts's family succeed. If I
- 7:33Speaker 3: think Northwestern winning is going to make Stu Gotts his
- 7:36Speaker 3: family happy and help Rachel's legacy getting a second title. Yep,
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'm rooting for that.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Did you know much about the UNC lacrosse team before
- 7:48Speaker 4: you were following Stu Gotts's daughter's career?
- 7:50Speaker 3: No, not really.
- 7:51Speaker 4: For being honest, so you don't so you never had
- 7:53Speaker 4: a tie to it. It was just you would have
- 7:55Speaker 4: just been sharing for launch just my school. Yes, okay,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I mean that's fair. It is a lot of time, though,
- 8:02Speaker 4: like to watch an entire lacrosse game out of your day,
- 8:04Speaker 4: but hey, I mean it's as part.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Of your job.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I mean, what are you doing.
- 8:07Speaker 2: You're even keeled, you're fair, you care about people, you know,
- 8:12Speaker 2: you don't judge, you don't know.
- 8:14Speaker 1: This is not judge. This is complete surprise. I'm shocked.
- 8:17Speaker 4: So this is the level of sports fandom we're talking about.
- 8:20Speaker 4: But I'm also wondering maybe it's just his job. So
- 8:22Speaker 4: you're surprised just that Taylor is. You're questioning whether or
- 8:26Speaker 4: not Taylor's fandom for women's lacrosse is genuine again, not
- 8:31Speaker 4: questioning complete surprise. When he said great game, I was like,
- 8:35Speaker 4: did I just.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Hear that right?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Or did I hear something entirely different? Did you accidentally
- 8:39Speaker 4: say basketball and Stu?
- 8:40Speaker 3: If we're gonna be honest, I probably turned off the
- 8:43Speaker 3: game at halftime and switched over to Netflix's Baseball.
- 8:46Speaker 2: You missed, I mean, you missed a classic. How do
- 8:48Speaker 2: you know about the saving overtime though? I mean, jeez,
- 8:51Speaker 2: box score Northwestern goalie stood on her head.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I mean, she was unbelievable.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You were watching NBA last night, is he?
- 8:58Speaker 4: I was definitely watching NBA. Heater big win in Cleveland,
- 9:01Speaker 4: break that losing street, Jesus.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But there were so many more interesting things that happened
- 9:07Speaker 2: in the NBA last night than that.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I know, so many great dunks last night in general.
- 9:11Speaker 4: But I'm curious, Taylor, what did you think of that
- 9:14Speaker 4: Netflix pregame show? Because I didn't watch any of it,
- 9:17Speaker 4: but I listened to some reviews last night and it
- 9:20Speaker 4: was pretty Netflix heavy.
- 9:22Speaker 1: All right, thank you for bringing it to Opening Day?
- 9:24Speaker 2: It started last night. Taylor's Yankees gotta win. That's what
- 9:27Speaker 2: he was watching. Now I have reason to question him.
- 9:30Speaker 2: The Yankees get off to a win. The Mets are
- 9:32Speaker 2: playing as we record this. They're up five too on
- 9:35Speaker 2: the Pirates.
- 9:36Speaker 1: They put up five runs on Paul Skien, right, and now.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Was it Paul Skin's fault? O'Neil Cruz disaster class in
- 9:42Speaker 3: center field.
- 9:43Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. No one pays attention to that. No
- 9:45Speaker 2: one knows who O'Neill is.
- 9:47Speaker 3: But they're gonna they were they were, but it should
- 9:50Speaker 3: have been ruled in error.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, what's gonna happen here is people are going to
- 9:53Speaker 2: start to question whether.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Or not Skiing should have pitched in the World Baseball
- 9:56Speaker 1: Class there.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just telling you right now, that's what's
- 9:59Speaker 2: gonna hap That's why school didn't do it.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I mean.
- 10:03Speaker 2: The Trader, I mean seriously, but they're going to start
- 10:07Speaker 2: to question that, so is he. The Heat won last night,
- 10:11Speaker 2: the Celtics beat Oklahoma City.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That was interesting, and Bead came back last night. The NBA.
- 10:16Speaker 1: For me, it's just starting right now.
- 10:18Speaker 4: I mean, so, Taylor, how was that pregame Netflix covered
- 10:21Speaker 4: for baseball?
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm not sure where two was trying to take me there.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I forgot about that.
- 10:24Speaker 2: It just hopped off a plane and I'm thinking about
- 10:26Speaker 2: lacrosse and the Metro scored five on fucking Schiens.
- 10:29Speaker 1: How about that? The Essen skeens stance for a shitty starter.
- 10:31Speaker 5: So is he.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna be careful here because I love Netflix. If
- 10:36Speaker 3: Netflix ever wants to partner with us, yeah, I love Netflix.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:40Speaker 3: First to preface that yes, However, that baseball game last
- 10:45Speaker 3: night was a two and a half hour Netflix commercial,
- 10:48Speaker 3: so they were rolling every person in the WWE roster.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Because WWE now partners with Netflix. We missed the first
- 10:56Speaker 3: ABS challenge system in MLB history because they were interviewing
- 11:01Speaker 3: the Giants manager.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Was it successful?
- 11:03Speaker 3: It was an unsuccessful challenge. I believe that Helmet's going
- 11:07Speaker 3: to Cooperstown.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I could guess till the end of time and never
- 11:09Speaker 2: name the Giants manager.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Tony Vittello from Tennessee.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Oh Tony v Uh.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Then the score bug is I don't know if you
- 11:18Speaker 3: saw the score bug, I did disaster.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Where was it? It wasn't like placed in a weird
- 11:23Speaker 4: spot or was it bottom right corner?
- 11:25Speaker 3: It was in the bottom right But anytime they went
- 11:28Speaker 3: to an interview, they dropped the score bug, so you
- 11:30Speaker 3: couldn't tell what was really going on in the game.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And then also a staple to a score bug is
- 11:37Speaker 3: saying who's pitching, Who's hitting. Yeah, the font that they
- 11:41Speaker 3: used was so small you needed a magnifying glasses.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Really, I mean, wow, I keep laughing because I did
- 11:48Speaker 4: this this little fireside chat with Ted Sarandos I think
- 11:52Speaker 4: is his name, the head of Netflix, just for the
- 11:54Speaker 4: NBA a few years ago. And one of my questions
- 11:57Speaker 4: was because I'd looked up this sort of infamous quote
- 12:00Speaker 4: he had had in the past and it said, are
- 12:02Speaker 4: you interested? They were asking him about it live sports,
- 12:04Speaker 4: and He's like, no, I'm not interested in live sports
- 12:06Speaker 4: because I'm interested in profit. And I'm like, now, he's
- 12:08Speaker 4: got live sports all over the place and probably not
- 12:11Speaker 4: doing it that great.
- 12:12Speaker 1: He's probably got to be shaking his head and be like, man,
- 12:13Speaker 1: we should have stayed out.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So Jamis Winston couldn't save baseball. I mean, was he
- 12:18Speaker 2: one of those people? He's part of Netflix his coverage.
- 12:21Speaker 3: So it was Jameis Winston, the the USO's from the WWE,
- 12:26Speaker 3: and is he throwing out the first pitch? Was the
- 12:29Speaker 3: show Wednesday? The spin off to.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The hand? Was it the hand?
- 12:34Speaker 3: It was the thing? Oh my god, what's the name
- 12:37Speaker 3: of that Adams family?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course, right, the thing?
- 12:40Speaker 3: The thing threw out the first pitch attempted to throw
- 12:43Speaker 3: the first did it just walk.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It to the plate? Like, how did that even work?
- 12:47Speaker 3: I didn't see it. I think I was watching the
- 12:48Speaker 3: Northwestern game.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Still, Now that's intriguing. Now I got to look that up.
- 12:52Speaker 4: It's the only thing about last night's game I need
- 12:54Speaker 4: to look up.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The thing has better stuff than schemes. How about that?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Put it on the ball tailor, dous The thing better
- 13:05Speaker 2: stuff than skeens, Stu.
- 13:08Speaker 3: This is my favorite time of the year on the
- 13:10Speaker 3: baseball calendar. Yes, because every team thinks that they've got
- 13:14Speaker 3: a chance going into the season.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yes, every team's ow and oh Taylor, Yes, yes, except
- 13:20Speaker 2: for the Yankees. They're one to oh and the team
- 13:21Speaker 2: they played is ohe and one.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So the Yankees start one to oh. And One of
- 13:25Speaker 3: the reasons why it's my favorite time of the year
- 13:28Speaker 3: is because it makes me think of this Mike francessa
- 13:31Speaker 3: call where you think about how well a team could
- 13:34Speaker 3: do in a season, and Ricardo's gonna play it right now?
- 13:37Speaker 6: Okay, Nick in New Jersey, what's up?
- 13:43Speaker 5: Nick?
- 13:44Speaker 8: I think Mike I was just wondering with the Yankees
- 13:49Speaker 8: and just baseball in general. Do you ever see a
- 13:52Speaker 8: team going undefeated in the regular season being as dominant
- 13:57Speaker 8: as the Pats and the Dolphins where they.
- 13:59Speaker 6: Run a table one hundred and sixty too and zero.
- 14:02Speaker 8: Yeah, like a team being that dominant, Do you think
- 14:05Speaker 8: that could be back?
- 14:06Speaker 5: Could happen in baseball?
- 14:08Speaker 6: You're not seriously like, wait, have you seen anybody come
- 14:15Speaker 6: close to one hundred and sixty to Oh?
- 14:17Speaker 8: Well, didn't the Yankees that one year one and twenty?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Okay, wait, wait, the Yankees didn't win one hundred and twenty.
- 14:24Speaker 6: They won one hundred and eleven in the regular season,
- 14:27Speaker 6: but still the.
- 14:28Speaker 8: Only fifty games away.
- 14:30Speaker 6: Fifty not a game fifty games away.
- 14:35Speaker 8: Yeah, but they had one hundred and ten wins.
- 14:37Speaker 5: They were they were good, but.
- 14:38Speaker 8: They weren't as dominant as the Patriots or other teams whatever.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Wait, wait, so you think a team that you're comparing
- 14:46Speaker 6: winning sixteen games to winning one hundred and sixty.
- 14:49Speaker 8: Two, Well, obviously football has less games. They come up one.
- 14:53Speaker 6: More game they bought the football has won less games. Really,
- 14:58Speaker 6: do you think they have less game?
- 15:00Speaker 5: No?
- 15:01Speaker 6: Well, I know football sixteen, right, and the others have
- 15:05Speaker 6: one hundred and so you think a team could go
- 15:07Speaker 6: one hundred and sixty two and oh if they were
- 15:11Speaker 6: that thumb? Yeah you do?
- 15:12Speaker 5: They have like Harvey?
- 15:14Speaker 6: Right, so you think that to eat time?
- 15:15Speaker 5: Right?
- 15:16Speaker 6: Because the best team of now the best team of
- 15:18Speaker 6: all time? I don't know what team you considered the
- 15:20Speaker 6: best team of all time? What team do you consider
- 15:22Speaker 6: the best baseball team of all time?
- 15:26Speaker 5: Maybe that Murderers row Yankee team?
- 15:27Speaker 6: Okay, now what do you think now? That team played
- 15:30Speaker 6: one hundred and fifty four game schedule? How many games
- 15:32Speaker 6: do you think they won? Oh?
- 15:34Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Maybe uh they lost though?
- 15:38Speaker 8: How many do you either think they lost?
- 15:39Speaker 5: Maybe? Probably? Right?
- 15:42Speaker 6: So how would you get from forty to zero?
- 15:46Speaker 5: Well, they would need to be a lot better obviously.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Let me know when it happens, Okay, because I want
- 15:50Speaker 6: to like watch I value I think I'm telling you folks,
- 15:58Speaker 6: John and Breezy point. What's up?
- 15:59Speaker 5: John?
- 15:59Speaker 6: All right? What's happening?
- 16:01Speaker 5: What? I have no idea?
- 16:04Speaker 1: I have no idea?
- 16:06Speaker 4: Taylor, Taylor, how long of an undefeated streak does a
- 16:11Speaker 4: team have to start the season with before Mike's like,
- 16:17Speaker 4: I'm a little worried.
- 16:20Speaker 3: You would have to probably get to the Earth. You
- 16:21Speaker 3: would probably have to get to like around the All
- 16:24Speaker 3: Star break, but it's my favorite thing of the year,
- 16:29Speaker 3: just keeping track of who's the closest to going one
- 16:32Speaker 3: sixty two and oh yes, and then once that final
- 16:34Speaker 3: team loses, you kind of just have to replay this clip.
- 16:39Speaker 2: The caller wins though, right before we get to j
- 16:41Speaker 2: Billa's The caller wins just merely by staying on the
- 16:44Speaker 2: phone that long with FRANCESSA yes, and it's even longer
- 16:47Speaker 2: than that.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I had to edit this down. I cut this call
- 16:50Speaker 3: down from like six minutes to two minutes. That caller's
- 16:52Speaker 3: calling and expecting to be hung up on if you.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Put in those arguments to chat GPT, I'm pretty sure
- 16:58Speaker 4: the caller wins. Yeah, a dominant team could one day
- 17:00Speaker 4: go one sixty two and oh, you haven't proven me.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Wrong, so Stu.
- 17:03Speaker 3: This has kind of become a thing for francesen out
- 17:05Speaker 3: where people will just call in and ask, hey, do
- 17:09Speaker 3: you think a team could go one sixty two and oh,
- 17:11Speaker 3: and they're waiting on hold for like two hours and
- 17:14Speaker 3: he just hangs up on them every time.
- 17:15Speaker 1: My favorite part of the call is the beginning. Do
- 17:18Speaker 1: do do do?
- 17:20Speaker 3: I mean, that's just him going through the call line.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Oh fin like what call he's gonna take?
- 17:24Speaker 6: Right?
- 17:24Speaker 2: Because he has options, right, and he wants you to
- 17:26Speaker 2: know that he has options. He has a ton of
- 17:28Speaker 2: calls he can take anyone.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Do Do Do, Do Do, stroll through the park.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Jay billis next a great sweet sixteen tips off tonight.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Jay billis kind enough to join us during a busy
- 17:40Speaker 2: time for him.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Jay, thank you for doing this. Let's start with North Carolina.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Was there yesterday, boots on the ground that was in
- 17:47Speaker 2: Chapel Hill, trying to get to the bottom of what's
- 17:49Speaker 2: going on at.
- 17:51Speaker 1: The University of North Carolina. Jay, So let's start here.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Were you surprised that Carolina decided to part ways with
- 17:59Speaker 2: Ebert Davis?
- 18:00Speaker 5: No, just because of the noise that was around the
- 18:04Speaker 5: fan base and the program and all that. I can't
- 18:07Speaker 5: say I was surprised. I mean, I've seen this movie
- 18:10Speaker 5: before there and other places, but I was disappointed. I
- 18:14Speaker 5: was not only disappointed for Hubert, who I admire greatly
- 18:18Speaker 5: and I think is an outstanding coach and one of
- 18:21Speaker 5: the best people I've ever known, but sort of, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 5: it's kind of hard to keep watching this over and
- 18:28Speaker 5: over and expect that, you know, these schools and administrations
- 18:34Speaker 5: are going to act any differently and they've ever acted
- 18:36Speaker 5: in the past. So I to answer the question, it
- 18:39Speaker 5: didn't surprise me, just really disappointed me. But I'm kind
- 18:43Speaker 5: of used to feel in that way given some of
- 18:46Speaker 5: the decisions that are made over and over again.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Jake, Could you just give me some perspective on or
- 18:51Speaker 4: give us some perspective on this, because you know, I
- 18:53Speaker 4: grew up college basketball was Carolina and Duke, and it
- 18:57Speaker 4: was obviously Dan Smith and coach K, and I don't
- 18:59Speaker 4: need to tell you that, And so I'm just curious today,
- 19:03Speaker 4: with whatever reason it is, whether it's an il, whether
- 19:05Speaker 4: it's just a grander scope of everything, where North Carolina
- 19:10Speaker 4: is as a job just you know, not just for
- 19:13Speaker 4: the coaches, but just nationally, how it's looked at.
- 19:16Speaker 5: It's the same place it's always been. And you know,
- 19:18Speaker 5: I get your point about, you know, Dean Smith and
- 19:21Speaker 5: coach K. But you know, when when coach K was
- 19:23Speaker 5: just getting going at Duke, he almost got fired after
- 19:26Speaker 5: four years, and he had a he had an administration
- 19:30Speaker 5: that stood.
- 19:30Speaker 7: Behind him and and.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Kind of ignored as best they could the howls that
- 19:37Speaker 5: were coming from the fan base and beyond and and
- 19:40Speaker 5: oftentimes back then the media and look what they got
- 19:43Speaker 5: out of it. And obviously not every situation is going
- 19:47Speaker 5: to be like that or or come out like that.
- 19:50Speaker 5: But you know, Carolina is a great job. It always
- 19:54Speaker 5: has been. I think it always will be. It's like
- 19:56Speaker 5: Kansas or you know, U C l A or all
- 19:59Speaker 5: these different things. I mean, help people thought Saint John's
- 20:01Speaker 5: was a dead end before Patino took it, and now
- 20:05Speaker 5: it's sort of been resurrected. But Carolina is as good
- 20:08Speaker 5: a job as there is in college sports.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Jay, there's a lot of big names linked to this job,
- 20:14Speaker 3: and most of them are still coaching, whether it's Dusty
- 20:17Speaker 3: May at Michigan, Tommy Lloyd at Arizona, tj Otzelberger at
- 20:21Speaker 3: Iowa State, Who, in your opinion, is the best person
- 20:24Speaker 3: for this Carolina job.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I don't wait into those things. I don't mean to
- 20:28Speaker 5: avoid the question, but when names are mentioned as linked
- 20:32Speaker 5: to the job, what I would say is linked by whom.
- 20:34Speaker 5: It's linked by the media. You know, it's media saying, well,
- 20:38Speaker 5: this person would be a great candidate, or here's the
- 20:40Speaker 5: likely list, and they don't really know because oftentimes, after
- 20:45Speaker 5: all these names are thrown out, they don't wind up
- 20:48Speaker 5: hiring any of those guys and what that kind of
- 20:51Speaker 5: thing does. And I'm not saying I'm not participating in it.
- 20:55Speaker 5: The truth is I don't know, and I'll know when
- 20:58Speaker 5: they make an announcement or when somebody you know is
- 21:01Speaker 5: in negotiations or all that, or there's actual news right now,
- 21:04Speaker 5: it's not really news yet. But what all that winds
- 21:08Speaker 5: up happening is getting the coaches mentioned bigger contracts where
- 21:11Speaker 5: they are and rightfully so, those guys use that as
- 21:15Speaker 5: leverage and they should. But you know, one of the
- 21:18Speaker 5: things that kind of makes me laugh about this whole
- 21:20Speaker 5: process is at the same time that coaches, administrators, presidents,
- 21:25Speaker 5: NCAA officials are complaining about the transfer portal, saying there's
- 21:30Speaker 5: tampering going on, and for players that are not under contract,
- 21:35Speaker 5: there's tampering, and what about loyalty and what about going
- 21:39Speaker 5: through adversity? These coaches are leaving left and right whenever
- 21:42Speaker 5: they feel like it, Like the coaches portal is always open,
- 21:46Speaker 5: and nobody's calling what's going on with Will Wade and LSU.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Nobody's saying tampering there?
- 21:53Speaker 1: Right?
- 21:54Speaker 2: What Jay Bill has just told you Taylor is he
- 21:55Speaker 2: is a fuck around with speculation.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Okay, he deals with facts, right, Jack, pretty much?
- 22:01Speaker 5: Yeah, but Carolina does more than you.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You were far nicer than I was, But I was
- 22:10Speaker 2: just listen. I was inside your head and that's what
- 22:12Speaker 2: you were thinking.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I know it, Jay, I know you. But Jay, I do.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Wonder because Carolina measures itself against Duke, Duke the same
- 22:20Speaker 2: with Carolina. How much do you think John Shire's instant
- 22:24Speaker 2: success at to kind of wade in in terms of
- 22:27Speaker 2: Carolina making the decision they just made.
- 22:30Speaker 5: I don't think it. I don't think that in particular matters.
- 22:33Speaker 5: If Coach k was still there, I think the decision
- 22:35Speaker 5: would have been largely the same and the circumstances would
- 22:38Speaker 5: have been the same. So I don't think if you know,
- 22:41Speaker 5: like say Duke had been struggling a little bit or something,
- 22:44Speaker 5: I don't think it would have mattered. Like Carolina would
- 22:47Speaker 5: have done what they were going to do no matter what.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Jay heard a lot of people complaining about not enough Cinderella's,
- 22:53Speaker 4: but I don't hear anybody complaining about these Sweet sixteen matchups.
- 22:57Speaker 1: So I'm just scarious. They're amazing. Do you have a
- 22:59Speaker 1: favorite out of the.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Bunch of bangers, oh god, like Illinois Houston will be great.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Like I can't think of a matchup I don't want
- 23:07Speaker 5: to see. And you know, that's kind of an interesting point,
- 23:10Speaker 5: like Cinderella is dead and all that stuff, which which
- 23:13Speaker 5: three years ago they were saying the world is flat
- 23:15Speaker 5: after Florida Atlantic and San Diego State made the Final
- 23:18Speaker 5: four and that was in the nil era, So I
- 23:20Speaker 5: don't really pay much attention to that. And while people
- 23:23Speaker 5: say they love Cinderella, when there is no Cinderella, the
- 23:28Speaker 5: ratings go up, So how do how do we square that?
- 23:32Speaker 5: Like the CBS just had its highest ratings ever. I
- 23:36Speaker 5: think I was reading for the first weekend and last
- 23:41Speaker 5: year's Final four with four number one seeds, the ratings
- 23:44Speaker 5: were off the charts. In the game. While people love
- 23:47Speaker 5: to complain about things, and some of the complaints may
- 23:49Speaker 5: be valid, but I don't think many of them are.
- 23:52Speaker 5: You know, the ratings are higher and they've ever been.
- 23:55Speaker 5: There's more interest than there's ever been, So I don't
- 23:57Speaker 5: know I square all these different things. But like, I
- 24:01Speaker 5: think the Sweet sixteen is really compelling and should be
- 24:05Speaker 5: really fun. I tend to favor I tend to favor
- 24:10Speaker 5: some of the you know, the bigger brands that are there. Like,
- 24:13Speaker 5: I don't I don't see like Michigan or Arizona losing
- 24:17Speaker 5: before before the Elite eight. But uh, you know, I
- 24:21Speaker 5: didn't see Florida getting beat by Ioway either.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Uh, Jay, is there a team remaining that where it
- 24:28Speaker 2: would surprise you if I told you they won.
- 24:30Speaker 1: The national championship?
- 24:33Speaker 5: Oh yeah, oh god, yes. I think it's different to
- 24:38Speaker 5: reach a final four than it is to win the
- 24:40Speaker 5: whole thing. So there are number of teams that are
- 24:44Speaker 5: capable of reaching a final four, especially you know in
- 24:48Speaker 5: the Midwest region and all that stuff in.
- 24:51Speaker 7: The South, But but win in when in the whole thing.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Is a different deal. So yeah, if you told me,
- 24:56Speaker 5: if you told me Texas came away and won the
- 24:58Speaker 5: whole thing, I'd not be surprised. I'd be shocked. Or Iowa, Like,
- 25:03Speaker 5: I just don't see that happening, you know, could they
- 25:07Speaker 5: could they win the two games in front of them?
- 25:10Speaker 5: You know, yeah, I guess, but I don't see that
- 25:13Speaker 5: happening either. But you know, they've done a great job
- 25:17Speaker 5: reaching where they are. But the further you get in
- 25:20Speaker 5: the tournament by and large the better teams are playing. Oftentimes,
- 25:24Speaker 5: when you get an outlier making the final four, it's
- 25:26Speaker 5: because the top seeds fell down in their region and
- 25:30Speaker 5: you lost more than just one of them.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Jay, I'm looking at the East Regional great matchups there.
- 25:36Speaker 3: If Yukon could get past Michigan State. How tough is
- 25:39Speaker 3: Dan Hurley's offense to prepare for on such a short turnaround.
- 25:44Speaker 5: It's hard to prepare for a period. They're really difficult
- 25:48Speaker 5: to deal with offensively because they're passing and cutting and
- 25:50Speaker 5: how many decisions they put you in, uh, and it's
- 25:54Speaker 5: a it's a communication challenge, and you're constantly moving and
- 25:59Speaker 5: there's there's great player moving off the ball and that's
- 26:02Speaker 5: hard to deal with. And ultimately they pray off of
- 26:06Speaker 5: defensive mistakes and they highlight that and hunt that. You know.
- 26:10Speaker 5: I think the issue with with them is going to
- 26:12Speaker 5: be their health. If everybody's healthy, they've got a great shot.
- 26:15Speaker 5: I mean, I thought at the beginning of the tournament,
- 26:17Speaker 5: because of Duke's injury issues, which were, you know, a
- 26:21Speaker 5: big question mark for him. If if Duke was healthy,
- 26:25Speaker 5: I think they'd be in the final four in this
- 26:27Speaker 5: in this bracket or this region, but I chose Michigan State.
- 26:32Speaker 5: And again, we don't know, like you're just kind of
- 26:34Speaker 5: taking a flyer based upon you know, the matchups and
- 26:37Speaker 5: how you feel about it. But Duke and Michigan State
- 26:40Speaker 5: played earlier this year and and it was in a
- 26:44Speaker 5: slanting it was a two possession game, and I think
- 26:46Speaker 5: if they play again, I would favor, you know, just
- 26:49Speaker 5: by a hair of Michigan State in that. But Duke's
- 26:52Speaker 5: a better team. If they played a seven game series,
- 26:54Speaker 5: I think it would be Duke. But but yeah, certainly
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yukon can still beat anybody in this They're just not
- 27:00Speaker 5: as Yukon's nowhere near as powerful as they were those
- 27:05Speaker 5: two years they won the back to backs when they
- 27:08Speaker 5: beat everybody by double digits, and nobody's ever done that,
- 27:10Speaker 5: not even John Wooden's UCLA teams did that. So this
- 27:15Speaker 5: team doesn't have the same same kind of power that
- 27:18Speaker 5: those teams had.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Jay cam Boozer is the probably the highest remaining draft
- 27:24Speaker 4: pick of the players left in the NCAA tournament. I
- 27:27Speaker 4: guess maybe I must a cuff leap frog him or something.
- 27:29Speaker 4: But if you had to pick a singular player to
- 27:33Speaker 4: win this tournament from the available players here in the
- 27:36Speaker 4: Sweet sixteen. Would it be Cam Boozer, Would it be
- 27:38Speaker 4: somebody else?
- 27:39Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 27:40Speaker 5: No, it'd be Darius A Cup Junior. Like I think
- 27:43Speaker 5: he's the one guy that can put a team on
- 27:45Speaker 5: his back and carry him. Like Boozers better all around,
- 27:50Speaker 5: probably because the impact so many areas of the game.
- 27:54Speaker 5: But a Cuff's like he can get forty in any
- 27:57Speaker 5: given game and he's done it. I mean, Helly had
- 27:59Speaker 5: forty nine against Alabama earlier this year. I know is
- 28:02Speaker 5: an overtime game. But he's the real deal. They're both,
- 28:05Speaker 5: they're both great, but I think I think a Cuff
- 28:08Speaker 5: Scott that's sort of that sort of ability Boozer kind of.
- 28:13Speaker 5: It's this cumulative effect to him, like just being so
- 28:16Speaker 5: damn consistent over and over again. And I think he
- 28:20Speaker 5: you know, they've got all these top picks I think
- 28:23Speaker 5: are going to do really well in the NBA. Boozer's
- 28:26Speaker 5: probably getting overlooked because he's not as flashy as maybe
- 28:30Speaker 5: AJ Debontsa or Darren Peterson or Darius A Cuff Junior.
- 28:35Speaker 5: But but he'll he'll be there for a long time
- 28:38Speaker 5: and very productive.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Jay that East region just going back to that for
- 28:42Speaker 2: a second. It's it's the rare final four. It feels
- 28:45Speaker 2: like before the actual final four. It's a final four
- 28:49Speaker 2: that any college basketball fan would take am. I being
- 28:52Speaker 2: prisoner of the moment guy, when I say this is
- 28:55Speaker 2: the greatest Sweet Sixteen of all time.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Yes you are. You're being the best. Like it's name
- 29:05Speaker 5: brand wise, it's unbelievable, you know, to have all like
- 29:08Speaker 5: that that entire East region. When the bracket came.
- 29:10Speaker 7: Out, I mean, you know, there was nothing but like.
- 29:13Speaker 5: National championships, national championship teams from the past, and and
- 29:18Speaker 5: coaches that have won national championships and final fours and
- 29:22Speaker 5: all that stuff. It was just loaded. So no other
- 29:24Speaker 5: region boasted that sort of championship pedigree, name brand stuff.
- 29:31Speaker 5: I don't like. And I think the teams are really
- 29:33Speaker 5: really good, but it's not like they're head and shoulders
- 29:36Speaker 5: better than any other region in that regard. I thought, overall,
- 29:40Speaker 5: the region was the hardest or at least the hardest path,
- 29:43Speaker 5: like for a number one seed for Duke. But you know,
- 29:48Speaker 5: it's not like like, you know, you win this thing
- 29:51Speaker 5: and all of a sudden they're handing the trophy to you.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I don't think it's going to work that way.
- 29:55Speaker 2: The coaches, though, are amazing, So I'm wondering here, and
- 29:58Speaker 2: I'm not trying to put you on the spot. J
- 29:59Speaker 2: Bill spot Hurley, Patino Shire Izzo the coach you would
- 30:03Speaker 2: choose to coach your team the remainder of this tournament.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Shire, because he's younger, he's less likely to have a
- 30:09Speaker 5: heart attack and die.
- 30:13Speaker 2: You really did like that amazing response, Yes.
- 30:18Speaker 5: That one, that one bracket the Midwest. I mean, all
- 30:20Speaker 5: the coaches are over seventy, and it's like the AARP
- 30:25Speaker 5: Sweet sixteen, you know, with Barnes and Samson and all
- 30:30Speaker 5: that stuff. I mean, it's kind of hilarious. Like, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 5: when I was a kid, you know, growing up in
- 30:35Speaker 5: La John Wooden.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Retired when I was like in fifth grade and he.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Was sixty five years old, and I thought he was
- 30:41Speaker 5: the oldest man that had ever lived. And now these
- 30:44Speaker 5: guys are coaching into their seventies and are pushing eighty
- 30:46Speaker 5: and you know, need walkers to get out there. But
- 30:50Speaker 5: it's pretty cool the contrast.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say, take health, take health issues.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Out of the equation and then give me an answer,
- 30:57Speaker 2: but that's putting you on the spot because because.
- 30:59Speaker 5: No, I mean, I don't mind doing that.
- 31:01Speaker 7: I mean, you know, like I'm not one.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Of these guys too that that sits here and says
- 31:05Speaker 5: all right, like the old the old coaches would say,
- 31:08Speaker 5: well he can, he can take his and beat yours
- 31:10Speaker 5: and then take yours and beat his and all that stuff.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Ye great, Like great coaches are great coaches. You know.
- 31:18Speaker 5: I tend to think that, uh, that the experience level
- 31:22Speaker 5: of Izzo is a factor. It's not going to make
- 31:26Speaker 5: It's not going to be the dis positive issue like
- 31:28Speaker 5: the players always decide these things. But it's nice when
- 31:32Speaker 5: you have that sort of experience level coming in. But
- 31:34Speaker 5: all those guys have experience. All of them have have
- 31:38Speaker 5: either won championships or been to the final four. You know,
- 31:42Speaker 5: Shires the youngest obviously and has had the least amount
- 31:46Speaker 5: of time, but he's the real deal. So you know,
- 31:49Speaker 5: I think that the best coach in this thing will
- 31:52Speaker 5: be the one with the best players.
- 31:53Speaker 2: At the end of it, Jay, we'll get you out
- 31:55Speaker 2: of here in just a second. Arizona Arkansas. What does
- 31:58Speaker 2: Arkansas need to do to beat our Arizona, who might
- 32:00Speaker 2: be the best team in the country.
- 32:02Speaker 5: Keep them off the foul line. Arizona's big and physical,
- 32:06Speaker 5: and they're way bigger and way more physical than Arkansas.
- 32:10Speaker 5: So Arkansas has got to turn it into an up
- 32:12Speaker 5: and down game because if it's if it's a pounded inside,
- 32:16Speaker 5: you know, glass deciding game, Arizona's got an advantage. And
- 32:21Speaker 5: Arizona throughout the year has has made more free throws
- 32:24Speaker 5: than their opponents have even attempted. And if it's that
- 32:27Speaker 5: kind of game, it's going to be Arizona because you know,
- 32:32Speaker 5: with that sort of physicality, if they hang a bunch
- 32:34Speaker 5: of fouls on like Trevor Brazil and their Nick Pringle
- 32:37Speaker 5: plays and all that, and those guys are foul trouble.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Those big guys are are awfully good. That Arizona has
- 32:43Speaker 5: Mo Crebas and Coopete Karchenkov at his position, has positional size.
- 32:50Speaker 5: They're a big and physical team. Even their guards have
- 32:53Speaker 5: good size. So you know, like I favor Arizona in
- 32:56Speaker 5: the game. I think they're better and Arkansas, I don't
- 32:59Speaker 5: think is beaten it top ten team all year, They've
- 33:02Speaker 5: beating everybody else like they're really good. But Arizona's a
- 33:06Speaker 5: little bit of a different animal with their size, all.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Right, Jay, we appreciate the time during a busy time
- 33:12Speaker 2: for you. I look forward to having you on again
- 33:14Speaker 2: soon and not talking about college basketball.
- 33:16Speaker 1: How about that.
- 33:17Speaker 5: I will talk about anything you like, as long as
- 33:20Speaker 5: I don't have to speculate.
- 33:25Speaker 2: We once asked him if Tyler Hansborough would be drafted
- 33:30Speaker 2: higher if he wasn't white, and he hung up on us.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I did not Oh wait.
- 33:34Speaker 7: Wait, wait wait, that is provision is history.
- 33:37Speaker 5: I did not hang up and I went. I went like,
- 33:41Speaker 5: question after question after question after question, answering it thoughtfully,
- 33:45Speaker 5: and you guys kept hammering.
- 33:47Speaker 7: Me on that ridiculous point, and then I'd had enough.
- 33:50Speaker 2: It was a terrible question. Well about you guys, you
- 33:52Speaker 2: mean Lovettard. I had nothing to do with it. I guy, Oh.
- 33:56Speaker 5: You were in the back egging him on. Come on, No,
- 33:58Speaker 5: I was.
- 33:58Speaker 1: No, no, I was feeding him question as I was.
- 34:00Speaker 5: You're right, this will set them off and then we'll
- 34:03Speaker 5: have bumpers for ten years.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yes we did, Jay, Thank you for the time. We
- 34:10Speaker 3: appreciate it.
- 34:11Speaker 2: We will dabble in speculation after the college basketball.
- 34:15Speaker 5: See you guys.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 34:17Speaker 5: Jay.
