- 0:30Now let's get into the episode. Hello everyone, and welcome to
- 0:35the Doctor Randy show, where beauty, Wellness, medicine and
- 0:39innovation come together. I'm your host Doctor Randy
- 0:43Boyett. She's helping shape the
- 0:45conversation around NAD in skin care.
- 0:49She's focused on longevity over traditional anti aging and she
- 0:54is the founder of Aramore, the new skin care line built on that
- 0:59idea. So please welcome Melissa
- 1:02Chabon. Welcome, Melissa to the show.
- 1:05It's so great to have you here. And from my research, you are
- 1:09doing something and are building something that is getting a lot
- 1:13of attention right now. And if you don't mind me jumping
- 1:16right in, for anyone that is just hearing about Aramore for
- 1:19the first time, what is it? It's a line of topical
- 1:24supplements. You'd call it skin care
- 1:26products. We've got 5 skews in the line. 1
- 1:30is actual supplementation and the rest are topical products
- 1:34knowing. That is a skin care line.
- 1:36You came into a very crowded space, but with a completely
- 1:39different perspective. And what made you say this is
- 1:44what's missing? Really, honestly, the science
- 1:47and how NAD is now resonating as a really important component of
- 1:52overall longevity and health across every cell in your body.
- 1:56And what has been the reaction so far?
- 2:00Are people immediately getting it or are you really having to
- 2:05re educate the market? Certainly education is a
- 2:09challenge, but the more that people are hearing about it and
- 2:12the value of it, whether it's being delivered through
- 2:15supplementation or IV or Kardashian conversation, I think
- 2:19the fact that it is becoming more and more top of mind and
- 2:24trendy, the easier it is for to explain.
- 2:27Let's get into the core idea behind all of this, the NAD
- 2:31right? For anyone who's hearing about
- 2:33it but not fully understanding it.
- 2:35What is it and why does that matter?
- 2:38It's a molecule that exists in your body.
- 2:41It fuels cellular energy. We need it in every part of our
- 2:45cells. It's so interesting and you know
- 2:47this so well that skin cells are very finicky.
- 2:51So when your body loves protein and fats and sugar for fuel,
- 2:55your skin doesn't like those things.
- 2:57Your skin only likes that. So as we think about the value
- 3:03of NAD, I don't know about use and I'm sure this is very much
- 3:07top of mind with your audience as well.
- 3:09The GLIP ones or the GOP's have been game changing for people.
- 3:13NAD is going to have that effect as well.
- 3:16And so it really powers cellular energy and the healthier your
- 3:22cells are at the basal level, the healthier those cells are
- 3:25going to be at the epidermal level or the surface level.
- 3:28So when any D levels start to decline, what's actually
- 3:33happening to the body and how does that start to show up in
- 3:36our skin? So if we think about this and we
- 3:39accept that the skin sheds every 28 days and there are 8 layers
- 3:43of skin cells that are raising to the top, to the things that
- 3:47you see, I hate to tell people, but you know, really starting in
- 3:51your late 20s, that energy and that power, that fuel that helps
- 3:55those cells migrate up in a healthy way starts to diminish a
- 4:00little bit. And so as those cells are
- 4:03working their way up, they're a little weaker, they're a little
- 4:07more fragile, they're not strong, they're not powerful.
- 4:10And so if we can keep those cells more powerful, what you
- 4:14would define as aging, the insults, the wrinkles, this age
- 4:18spots, that's what you see. But it's really happening at the
- 4:21cellular level. It just you don't know it until
- 4:24you actually see it. So would you say that NAD
- 4:27decline is one of the main drivers of aging or is that
- 4:31really oversimplifying it? No, I think it's absolutely one
- 4:35of the main drivers of aging. On that note, at what point does
- 4:40the depletion really start to matter?
- 4:42Right? Maven start to deplete in our
- 4:4430s and 40s or even earlier, but when can we really see that
- 4:49happening? I mean, I think that, you know,
- 4:51every decade for women, let's forget about the 20s just for a
- 4:55second, but every decade everything changes a little bit,
- 4:58right? Our skin, our body, all of those
- 5:01things. So I think you really start to
- 5:04see a process of aging or signs of aging start in the mid 30s.
- 5:10And often times that's postpartum.
- 5:12Sometimes it's postpartum and Perry, which also, as you know,
- 5:15changes our skin quite dramatically.
- 5:17So, you know, my view of this is the same way we're thinking
- 5:22about how we treat our muscles and how we want to start to work
- 5:26out early because the mountain gets too hard to climb.
- 5:29As we get older, we maintain some of this behavior and some
- 5:33of this renewal. It's just going to make
- 5:35everything much easier as these decades pass.
- 5:38One thing I noticed with your line, and thank you very much
- 5:40for sending me the line, I've been really enjoying trying it,
- 5:44is topical versus ingestible, right?
- 5:48So let's talk about that delivery.
- 5:50Can you actually impact NAD levels through topical skin
- 5:55care? I'd love to know more about
- 5:56that. I think certainly topically
- 5:59that's where our patents lie, that's where our strength is.
- 6:01We've actually broken through and we have enormous
- 6:04intellectual property that protects what we've invented and
- 6:07we have, as you know, deep clinical data around the skin
- 6:11barrier actually changing. So very demonstratable.
- 6:15As it relates to supplementation, I'm of the
- 6:18belief that there is always some benefit to some supplements.
- 6:22As you know, there isn't the rigor in the supplement
- 6:25business, nor is there the regulatory oversight in the
- 6:28supplement business and there is in the skin care business.
- 6:30I think it benefits our gut health.
- 6:32I think it benefits our skin health and it benefits our brain
- 6:36health to take an 80 supplement. I take it myself.
- 6:39I get infusions. I don't think there's a
- 6:41tremendous amount of clinical trial data that supports exactly
- 6:47what's happening. But I think if you believe in
- 6:50inner and outer, which I do, we have huge amounts of data around
- 6:54topical supplements, some data around the oral supplementation,
- 6:58and I think the combination, if nothing else, isn't going to
- 7:01hurt. That was going to be my next
- 7:03question. Are the topical and the
- 7:06ingestible doing different jobs or they really meant to work
- 7:10cohesively together? And when you take a supplement,
- 7:13it's going through your gut, you know, your body is digesting all
- 7:16of that and processing it. When you're using a topical
- 7:19supplement, it's going directly to the skin.
- 7:21It's not going anywhere else. It's penetrating the basal
- 7:24layer. It's going directly to do its
- 7:26job. So, you know, I think at the end
- 7:29of the day, I would say that I think what I hear anecdotally
- 7:33people saying is that from their perspective, the combination's
- 7:36working and even silly things that we don't necessarily put
- 7:40much stock in. But people will say my nails are
- 7:43stronger, you know, which makes sense, right?
- 7:46If you're putting cellular energy out there, that takes a
- 7:49lot of cellular energy for your nails to grow.
- 7:51If someone is just using the skin care and not doing anything
- 7:56internally right ingestible like an intravenous or taking the
- 8:00supplements, are they missing the real benefit?
- 8:04I think it depends on your perspective.
- 8:07I take the intravenous. I've loved drips well before
- 8:10they became popular. I watched my mom go through some
- 8:13health issues and I, I was mesmerized and and astonished by
- 8:16what a bag of saline would do for a couple of days.
- 8:20So I think that hydration, getting those vitamins into the
- 8:23bloodstream, I think yes, for me, you're missing an
- 8:25opportunity to improve overall health.
- 8:28There is some benefit to skin. Anytime you hydrate the body,
- 8:31there's benefit to skin, right? You get a go.
- 8:34Is it progressive? Does it last?
- 8:38I'm not a clinician. I can't answer that question,
- 8:41but I think there is benefit to an inner and outer approach to
- 8:44your whole body health and your whole cellular health.
- 8:47Before we go any further, one of the topics that, you know, I've
- 8:51noticed that Aramore really focuses on is longevity, which
- 8:55is kind of unique in skin health conversation.
- 9:00So when you use the term skin longevity, how do you really
- 9:04define that? I think the word is interesting.
- 9:07I don't know how you're feeling about the word right now,
- 9:09whether it's being overused or commoditized a little bit.
- 9:14And as you know, in the beauty industry, we have to be careful
- 9:16of what happens when we get on trend with something.
- 9:19I think living longer isn't the goal.
- 9:22It's living well. And I think again, if we can
- 9:29help our health span our skin, span our lifespan where we're
- 9:33looking better longer, I think it has all sorts of benefits
- 9:37psychologically with for joy and confidence and really looking
- 9:42forward to aging versus fearing it.
- 9:45I agree with you and I think, you know, the world is embracing
- 9:48the aging process and embracing longevity.
- 9:51So let's shift gears for just a minute.
- 9:54Let's talk about the supporting ingredients in your line beyond
- 10:00NAD. And as I was preparing for the
- 10:03show, I saw such an impressive list of supporting ingredients.
- 10:08What are the key ingredients that really support what you are
- 10:11doing here? Certainly antioxidants are
- 10:14critical. I think, you know, any
- 10:16hydrolonic acids are critical. We believe very, very strongly
- 10:20in retinols. I mean, if you were to talk to
- 10:22us and say what are the three most important things you do in
- 10:25skin, it's NAD, retinol and sunscreen.
- 10:30Other things matter. There's no question that they
- 10:32matter, especially if they're skin specific.
- 10:35But there's so few things that really have as much benefit as
- 10:39those three things. And as you know, there's very
- 10:41few things that penetrate all the way down to the cell level.
- 10:45So the cosmetic ingredients that support NAD are there for the
- 10:49things that you're looking for, brightness, hydration, all of
- 10:53the things that other products are doing, but other products
- 10:55are not stimulating cellular energy.
- 10:58They're definitely not, and they're not claiming that
- 11:00either, right? So I would like to talk about
- 11:02how someone would experience this as a system.
- 11:06So if you don't mind, walk us through, you know, the key
- 11:09products, maybe not everything in the line, but the core
- 11:12products and how they fit together.
- 11:14And I have some of them here so I can kind of show the
- 11:17packaging. And I mean, it's so high end.
- 11:20The packaging is beautiful. So congratulations, love, you
- 11:23know, the the glass bottles too. It's just very rich, luxurious,
- 11:28everything about it. So go ahead and walk us through
- 11:31the system if you don't mind. So I think it's interesting that
- 11:35we should be thought of as a creative to whatever you're
- 11:38using. We are not a moisturizer, we are
- 11:41not a vitamin C, we're not supplanting anything else you're
- 11:44using. This should be an additional
- 11:46step in your routine that again enhances cellular energy,
- 11:52stimulates cellular energy. So I personally use the
- 11:57Energizing Day treatment twice a day and I put the restoration
- 12:01and retinol on at night. Our retinol is amazing.
- 12:05It's a 1% retinol, but it doesn't cause any peeling.
- 12:10It's really spectacular. And you know, when you're at
- 12:12that 1% level, you can sometimes get pretty aggressive reaction,
- 12:16but amazing and I have. Tried it and I am somebody who
- 12:21is sensitive to the potent retinols and I have not had any
- 12:24trouble with it, so it's great. It's amazing.
- 12:27And I think the combination and the NAD is not in the retinol,
- 12:31so you have to use those as a combination treatment.
- 12:34But we've seen really spectacular results in our
- 12:37before and afters and just overall people being so pleased
- 12:40with it. We have an eye cream that has
- 12:42NAD in it as well as a little bit of caffeine.
- 12:45So just try that out before you go full tilt on it and then the
- 12:49supplement. So those are the products.
- 12:51So really, I mean, again, I think the discipline of not
- 12:56exploiting the line too much. I think, you know in the
- 12:59industry sometimes we can over sort and I think for us, we do
- 13:04one thing and one thing only and that stimulates cellular energy.
- 13:08That's what we do. Everybody else does what they
- 13:10do, but that's what we do. So this fits in with your
- 13:14existing skin care routine and this just adds to it, right?
- 13:18It's like a perk to increase the results of what you're already
- 13:23doing. So if somebody were to just want
- 13:27to get started with Aramor and they wanted to try one product,
- 13:30what product would you recommend?
- 13:32Daily energizing treatment. OK, absolutely.
- 13:34And, and twice a day. You don't change things like
- 13:37this that work in this kind of dramatic fashion overnight.
- 13:41It takes 3 to 4 weeks and you all of a sudden see a evenness
- 13:45and tone is and for most people, what happens is someone else
- 13:48says to you, what are you doing? You're doing something.
- 13:51And that's always the greatest review we can get.
- 13:53How important is consistency with the system in order to see
- 13:57results? I mean every day.
- 14:00I just think it has to be part of your daily routine.
- 14:02Think of it in the context of nutrition for your body.
- 14:05I don't know about you, but I've become like a cottage cheese
- 14:07freak now because you know, I'm so concentrated on protein and
- 14:11getting protein into my body to build muscle because I
- 14:14understand now that muscle health, bone health, that leads
- 14:18to longevity, it leads to a healthier, stronger body.
- 14:21It's not a moisturizer. It is not going to do that.
- 14:24So don't expect that of it's there for something completely
- 14:28different and you'll see real benefit in three to four weeks.
- 14:31And that was actually going to transition to my next question.
- 14:34What are the first changes that someone is going to notice when
- 14:38they start using the line and how quickly?
- 14:41So that's great. So it's pretty quick.
- 14:43Yeah, evening of tone is sort of what you see right away.
- 14:47You know, as you get older, obviously your skin demarcation
- 14:51changes and if you suffer from any redness, rosacea, those
- 14:55types of things, you'll see a shift in that and then
- 14:57eventually a little bit fine lines and wrinkles.
- 15:00And I would say, you know, it's not hydroquinone, but I would
- 15:03say you will see a difference in age spots.
- 15:05So I know that you have done extensive research.
- 15:09There's a lot of data. What kind of research in science
- 15:13is our more built on, and how much of this is backed by
- 15:17clinical data? Lots of assays, lots and lots
- 15:20and lots of assays. So tremendous amounts of assay.
- 15:24Experiments of skin in Petri dishes.
- 15:27There's been some punch biopsy work done.
- 15:30And really if you have if two things happening, you have NAD
- 15:34as one component and then you have the chassis, which is a
- 15:37fatty lipid. That's being the carrier, it's
- 15:39the horse that's carrying the jockey into the cells, right?
- 15:42So that there's two things that are pretty important in this.
- 15:45And it took quite a bit of time, lots of ultrasound studies and
- 15:50lots of published data here and by scientists who are academic
- 15:55by nature. They're not commercial
- 15:56scientists, they're academic scientists.
- 15:57They teach and they can't even as founders can't really even
- 16:01talk about product because they are representing a university.
- 16:04Well, I know that you have a big team of scientists behind you
- 16:07and that that has to be a great feeling because you know what
- 16:09you're putting out there is is definitely effective.
- 16:13So what do you think that people are misunderstanding right now
- 16:17about the science behind NAD and skin so that we can kind of sum
- 16:21up this section about that? I think that because you don't
- 16:25see your cells, you don't see any think about how we think
- 16:29about our heart or our brain. Like your skin is your largest
- 16:33organ, but how you judge it is by its appearance.
- 16:37You don't see other organs, you don't see those things, right?
- 16:40So I think helping people to understand that your largest
- 16:45organ, your shield, your armor, you know, the organ that takes
- 16:50the biggest beating, you don't really take care of it in the
- 16:54same way you take care of other parts of your body, other
- 16:58organs. And so I think it's people learn
- 17:01and understand that if we actually start to manage, I hate
- 17:07the word aging so much, but manage the health from the
- 17:09inside out. The outside will reward you, but
- 17:14if you're only managing from the outside, there's no real long
- 17:20term benefit to that except the scalpel.
- 17:22I guess we're a really, really important time of getting people
- 17:26to understand and believe that the aging process is a lifelong
- 17:30journey. Well, it's a great way to sum it
- 17:33up and explain really what you do.
- 17:35And as we start to wrap things up, if someone is hearing about
- 17:41Aramour and this approach to skin longevity for the first
- 17:45time today, what's one thing you would really want them to walk
- 17:48away with? I think you know that how you
- 17:50age is in your control. You can manage it.
- 17:54And if you believe that, and if you believe that aging is skin
- 17:59aging, it doesn't just happen to you.
- 18:01It's not just genetic. It's within our power that we
- 18:04have based on what we choose to use on our skin, how we choose
- 18:08to treat our skin. Thank God science is starting to
- 18:11catch up. I think science is becoming, at
- 18:14least the biology of skin is becoming more prevalent instead
- 18:17of the marketing of skin care products.
- 18:20Paramount to all of this, I know that you've seen the show, we
- 18:23have a lot of plastic surgeons on the show and dermatologists.
- 18:27And what they talk about is when they do procedures, whether it's
- 18:31surgical or non surgical, that the most important thing that
- 18:35they're looking at when they're going to do those treatments is
- 18:39skin health. So keeping our skin healthy in
- 18:42between, if we have a surgical procedure, even, you know, an
- 18:45energy based procedure, making sure that we're keeping things
- 18:48up like with NAD skin care, with items like Airmore, that really
- 18:53changes the result of having any of these treatments done.
- 18:57And it's easy to do as business people.
- 18:59We're not suggesting you jump through hurdles here.
- 19:02It's just the science is available and now you have the
- 19:05choice to use it or not. I think that this has been a
- 19:09wonderful conversation. Ned really is making its way
- 19:12into everybody's conversations. So thank you so much for joining
- 19:18us today. Melissa, I know that you are
- 19:20traveling and on the run, so we really appreciate your time and
- 19:23joining us and sharing all of this.
- 19:25If you don't mind sharing with us, where can people go to learn
- 19:28more about Aramore and everything that you're building?
- 19:31Aramar.com, we've got our own website and we love for your
- 19:36listeners to have the opportunity through AQR code to
- 19:39try it with a little bit of an incentive.
