- 0:00Speaker 1: What the heck happened? An expert weighs in, it's one
- 0:03Speaker 1: more thing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm strong and getty.
- 0:06Speaker 3: One more thing before we get to that.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Two quick things. One.
- 0:11Speaker 4: I just looked up at the Twitter machine and there
- 0:15Speaker 4: is something on there about young people in New York
- 0:19Speaker 4: talking about how they all got punched in the face
- 0:21Speaker 4: because of a recent TikTok challenge in which the thing
- 0:26Speaker 4: was to just walk up and punch people in the face,
- 0:28Speaker 4: and some of the morons do it. I want a
- 0:30Speaker 4: TikTok challenge that is, it's the leave your parents' house,
- 0:35Speaker 4: get a job and support yourself challenge, the follow the law,
- 0:41Speaker 4: pay your taxes, and raise your kids right challenge.
- 0:44Speaker 2: See if that catches on, it'll be waiting forever for that.
- 0:47Speaker 5: God.
- 0:47Speaker 4: I saw one the other day where there's a whole
- 0:51Speaker 4: bunch of iterations of this of like it's just abusing
- 0:56Speaker 4: old people, the scaring them basically, and.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's just horrific, harsh and draconian penalty.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I act like somebody broke into the house for Grandma
- 1:07Speaker 4: and then and you know, get her reaction. Yeah, because
- 1:09Speaker 4: she's an old woman who thinks somebody broke into her home.
- 1:12Speaker 4: That's why she reacted that way. Why is that funny?
- 1:14Speaker 4: You freaking moron. You should be in jail just for this.
- 1:17Speaker 6: You know, it's concerning the people who do that and
- 1:19Speaker 6: the people who laugh at it.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Oh my god, this one was a I guess this
- 1:24Speaker 4: was a Jackass thing originally from the Jackass movie. But
- 1:27Speaker 4: I saw this on TikTok the other day. It was, uh,
- 1:30Speaker 4: you push a stroller with a baby in it, a
- 1:34Speaker 4: fake baby at toy the doll doll is the term
- 1:37Speaker 4: fake baby? Yeah, and bother say and the like, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 4: the stroller you accidentally trip and push it into traffic
- 1:44Speaker 4: in a car hits it or something like that, and
- 1:46Speaker 4: then you get there the reaction of people who are
- 1:48Speaker 4: horrified that a baby just got ran over, Why is
- 1:51Speaker 4: that funny?
- 1:52Speaker 6: Or you get the people that run out into traffic
- 1:54Speaker 6: trying to stop it.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:56Speaker 6: There's another guy that's going he went viral the other
- 1:59Speaker 6: day that was going through like walmarts and targets and
- 2:02Speaker 6: going up to people that had full carts, families, I
- 2:06Speaker 6: mean everything, and just pulling the cart and knocking it
- 2:09Speaker 6: over and knocking this stuff everywhere and then running away
- 2:12Speaker 6: for no reason at all other than to be a dick.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Right, and then their friends film that and put it
- 2:18Speaker 4: on TikTok and then people watch it, and I think
- 2:20Speaker 4: that's okay.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I guess I, well I had them.
- 2:24Speaker 6: With the algorithm. Is the more attention they get, they
- 2:26Speaker 6: get paid.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I'm glad you're young in complaining about this, because when
- 2:29Speaker 4: Joe and I complain about this, we just sound like
- 2:31Speaker 4: you know, old men about modern culture. But this is
- 2:35Speaker 4: a change in society.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Oh yees, yeah, well you're complaining about it. I'm even
- 2:42Speaker 1: now sketching out my plan to form a vigilante group
- 2:46Speaker 1: that's going to find these internet scoundrels and hunt them
- 2:49Speaker 1: down and give them some real world ass kickings.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh I know what it was.
- 2:52Speaker 4: So you take the car carrier thing that you put
- 2:55Speaker 4: your baby in, like when you go into the grocery store,
- 2:58Speaker 4: and then come back and snap it into the car seat.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The person puts it on top of the.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Car and it does some stuff and then drives off
- 3:05Speaker 4: with on top of the car, and then you film
- 3:07Speaker 4: the reactions of everybody freaking out that you drove off
- 3:10Speaker 4: with your baby on top of your car.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I do love that.
- 3:13Speaker 6: In New York, there is a hashtag I punch back,
- 3:15Speaker 6: and there are a series of videos of people I'll.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Tell you what, you come and knock over my cart
- 3:21Speaker 4: full of stuff with my kids there. I'm gonna have
- 3:23Speaker 4: to fight myself to not tackle you.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And we're rappling around.
- 3:27Speaker 5: And find out huh oh god, dang it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: All right, Well, this is troubling and disturbing in the
- 3:32Speaker 1: world is ugly and full of evil. Anyway, So it
- 3:35Speaker 1: turns out a giant cargo ship took out a bridge
- 3:38Speaker 1: in Baltimore on the day that we are recording this podcast.
- 3:43Speaker 1: The death toll is yet on unknown, but at a
- 3:46Speaker 1: terrible disaster and incredibly dramatic video as well. This posted
- 3:50Speaker 1: at Armstrong and Giddy dot com Tuesday, March twenty sixth Anyway,
- 3:54Speaker 1: got this note from twenty thirty two. I'm speaking to
- 4:01Speaker 1: you from the moon colony while Jack remains on Earth.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Trump is in his fifteenth term. Finally, finally one party rule,
- 4:10Speaker 3: as we dreamed of secretly all those years we were
- 4:13Speaker 3: talking about the Constitution. So Al the Mariner, we'll just.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Call him Al anonymous.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I don't think he'd mind, but does this sort of
- 4:27Speaker 1: thing for a living, big ship shipping, and has corresponded
- 4:31Speaker 1: with us through the years whenever something in his realm
- 4:35Speaker 1: comes up. And he's quite knowledgeable and appreciate the note.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But i'll read you parts of his email to us.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I watched this with my captain and cadet. I don't
- 4:46Speaker 1: know what a cadet is. Apparently that's something on a ship,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and from what we can tell, it looks like they
- 4:50Speaker 1: lost the plant the ship's power and or propulsion and
- 4:55Speaker 1: collided with the northern span of the bridge.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah. Actually twice they lost power. She meaning the.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Boat most definitely had at least a harbor pilot on board,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and may even have had a docking pilot on board too.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Harbor or bay pilots get the ship from the sea
- 5:12Speaker 1: buoy to the port, and docking pilots park the ship.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Driving a conning a ship or driving it isn't nearly
- 5:19Speaker 1: as simple as most people think it is.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I don't think it's simple. I think it's probably really hard.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Oh I thought it was hard, and it's harder than
- 5:25Speaker 5: I thought.
- 5:26Speaker 1: This ship has a bow thruster one, so okay, whooo.
- 5:37Speaker 5: I'm trying so hard not to laugh.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I don't want to give him the encouragement.
- 5:45Speaker 2: That was great, Jack, Thank you for that child got.
- 5:48Speaker 4: My child is right, My son who's twelve, and I
- 5:51Speaker 4: don't think he knows what he's talking about, dropped to That's.
- 5:54Speaker 2: What she said on me the other day.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Because it's popular in school, and I don't think they
- 5:59Speaker 4: most of them know what they're really talking about.
- 6:01Speaker 5: But I don't see that gives me hope for the
- 6:03Speaker 5: next generation. It really does.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Were they discussing China on the playground?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Oh?
- 6:11Speaker 5: Boy?
- 6:11Speaker 1: So the ship has a bow thruster just like Jack,
- 6:13Speaker 1: one slow speed diesel engine, and one fixed pitch propeller.
- 6:18Speaker 1: In order for most of these types of ships to
- 6:20Speaker 1: reverse propulsion, the engineers first have to have to unclutch
- 6:24Speaker 1: the shaft. I won't, I won't, I won't good, shut
- 6:29Speaker 1: down the engine, stop the shaft from spinning, restart the
- 6:33Speaker 1: engine backwards, and clutch in the shaft. These ships are
- 6:38Speaker 1: built to run most of their lives going forward as
- 6:40Speaker 1: efficiently as possible, so.
- 6:41Speaker 5: They are incredibly inefficient.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Trying to make way a stern backing up In a
- 6:46Speaker 1: perfect world, it would take a few minutes to start
- 6:48Speaker 1: backing down. Well, this isn't a perfect world.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Wow, I didn't know they could just start going backwards
- 6:53Speaker 4: that fast.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I figured it took longer than that, longer.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Than what.
- 7:02Speaker 1: No, in a perfect world, it would take a few
- 7:04Speaker 1: minutes to start backing down, But this is not a
- 7:07Speaker 1: perfect world. With ships, you can't just put it in reverse.
- 7:11Speaker 5: First.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You are trying to take off tens of thousands of
- 7:14Speaker 1: long tons of momentum.
- 7:17Speaker 5: It's a term I'm completely unfamiliar with.
- 7:19Speaker 1: With the added delay of the plant going through its
- 7:21Speaker 1: process of getting the stern bell going. So for the
- 7:24Speaker 1: most part, mariners have to maneuver their way out of
- 7:27Speaker 1: an oh shit moment. If you don't have power, you
- 7:30Speaker 1: can't move the hydraulics involved with the rudder to push
- 7:33Speaker 1: your stern over most cargoes, vessel pivot point is a
- 7:36Speaker 1: third of the ship's length from the bow to the
- 7:41Speaker 1: so even if we were able to start a turn,
- 7:43Speaker 1: the ship may still have hit the bridge on the
- 7:45Speaker 1: side of the vessel like a glancing blow. Also, with
- 7:48Speaker 1: a fixed pitch prop, you will back up the opposite
- 7:51Speaker 1: side your screw pins. Oh back up to the opposite
- 7:54Speaker 1: side your screw pins. For example, if your prop spins
- 7:57Speaker 1: clockwise going forward, this is called the right handed propel. Well,
- 8:00Speaker 1: you were trying to back up your stern will get
- 8:02Speaker 1: pushed to the left. Then he goes into how the
- 8:05Speaker 1: rudder works. But the point is it is a nightmare
- 8:08Speaker 1: to maneuver these things, and you've got to be extremely
- 8:11Speaker 1: good at it because there's so much energy, that much
- 8:15Speaker 1: weight in motion.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Well, I know you're seafaring people, Katie.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Your dad has a boat and everything, and but if
- 8:21Speaker 4: you've ever driven a boat at all, you know how
- 8:24Speaker 4: difficult it can be to, you know, go a certain
- 8:30Speaker 4: direction or stop from going a certain direction if you miscalculate.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Oh yeah, and everything takes extra time. There is no
- 8:37Speaker 6: immediate maneuver on anything on the water.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And then so our Joe and I's friend Dave, who
- 8:42Speaker 4: lives on a boat down San Diego. Last time I
- 8:44Speaker 4: was with it, I guess it was last Friday, fourth
- 8:46Speaker 4: of July. So we're on his boat and we come
- 8:48Speaker 4: back and he lost motors. He lost one of his motors,
- 8:51Speaker 4: so he lost the motor on one side, so he
- 8:53Speaker 4: could only navigate one direction, and man, we ended up
- 8:57Speaker 4: having a bad thing happen all on one side of boat,
- 9:01Speaker 4: trying to keep us from smashing into all these other
- 9:03Speaker 4: boats and smashing his boat up against the poles because
- 9:06Speaker 4: once you start drifting and you got no motors, like
- 9:09Speaker 4: that guy was talking about, if you got no power,
- 9:12Speaker 4: you're just going the direction you were going.
- 9:14Speaker 6: Yeah, And I don't know if you guys saw that
- 9:17Speaker 6: video where it's sped up where you can see where
- 9:19Speaker 6: this ship is heading towards the bridge.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I mean the power goes out twice.
- 9:23Speaker 6: So they're clearly having some big issues, let alone trying
- 9:27Speaker 6: to maneuver this thing right.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And I'll get to that in just a second, but
- 9:31Speaker 1: he points out the description of how the rudder works
- 9:33Speaker 1: that and anybody who has a boat knows this. You
- 9:36Speaker 1: can't turn a boat that isn't moving right. It's got
- 9:39Speaker 1: to be moving to turn, and if you need it
- 9:41Speaker 1: to turn quickly, it needs to be going fast.
- 9:44Speaker 4: If you've driven on snow or ice, you know this
- 9:46Speaker 4: phenomenon is also right.
- 9:48Speaker 1: So anyway, so they had that problem, and it takes
- 9:51Speaker 1: a long damn time to move a ship like that significantly,
- 9:55Speaker 1: especially at the speeds they were going. Then he says,
- 9:57Speaker 1: all of that being said, the loss of power adds
- 9:59Speaker 1: on massive delay to try to make any corrective action.
- 10:02Speaker 1: In the video, you can see the lights cut off
- 10:04Speaker 1: and back on again. We timed it. It took well
- 10:06Speaker 1: over a minute to get power back on. The regulations
- 10:09Speaker 1: say that the emergency diesel generators should only take at
- 10:13Speaker 1: most forty five seconds to restore power to the emergency systems.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, that reminds me of the text we got that
- 10:18Speaker 4: said I didn't know Boeing made ships.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Now uh yeah, yeah, uh.
- 10:25Speaker 1: With this, you'll probably hear why didn't they just drop
- 10:27Speaker 1: an anchor? Well, it doesn't work like that in the
- 10:30Speaker 1: movie Battleship or Contraband. In order for the flukes of
- 10:33Speaker 1: modern anchors to fetch up, you have to be going
- 10:36Speaker 1: almost one knot. I had a captain tell me one time,
- 10:39Speaker 1: never run aground with two anchors on board. They don't
- 10:42Speaker 1: do shit. But it makes it looks like you tried everything.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Oh okay, so that sau Just First of all, I
- 10:48Speaker 4: didn't think of the anchor thing. If I'd thought of it,
- 10:50Speaker 4: I would have said that myself. Why didn't they drop
- 10:52Speaker 4: the anchor? But don't run aground without having dropped both anchors,
- 10:56Speaker 4: or at least it looks like you tried.
- 10:57Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Wow. Wow.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Things like this can have a number of things go wrong,
- 11:04Speaker 1: ranging from misjudgment from the pilot, of miscommunication between the
- 11:07Speaker 1: pilot and captain, or a mistake in the engine room
- 11:09Speaker 1: that caused a loss of power end or a propulsion shoot.
- 11:12Speaker 5: It could be all three.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I highly recommend keeping an eye on the YouTube channel
- 11:16Speaker 1: what is going on with shipping. The guy there does
- 11:19Speaker 1: a great job at explaining maritime and navy stuff, and
- 11:21Speaker 1: he'll break this down as soon as he has info.
- 11:23Speaker 4: So these great, big giant tanker ships that got all
- 11:26Speaker 4: those containers on them, and railroad cars and stuff like that,
- 11:30Speaker 4: or trailers for semis. I mean that gives you the perspective.
- 11:33Speaker 4: It's the only way you can get any perspective on
- 11:34Speaker 4: these things as they're sitting out in the ocean with
- 11:36Speaker 4: nothing next to them. You look at those things and
- 11:38Speaker 4: think he's one of those as like a train car
- 11:40Speaker 4: or a container or whatever it is. Yeah, and you think,
- 11:42Speaker 4: oh my god, that's a giant ship.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:45Speaker 4: But remember so we were at a port in West
- 11:49Speaker 4: Sacramento where they ship lots of rice in and out
- 11:52Speaker 4: from around the world. Remember that guy telling us stories
- 11:56Speaker 4: about those giant ships that come in and there aren't
- 11:58Speaker 4: very many people on those ships, and how.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Weird they all were. Yes, I do have you ever
- 12:06Speaker 2: heard this, Katie before?
- 12:06Speaker 4: But they're out there for months, and a lot of
- 12:09Speaker 4: people that work on these ships are very strange people,
- 12:11Speaker 4: because you're somebody that wants to be on a ship
- 12:14Speaker 4: with no other human beings and like no entertainment or
- 12:18Speaker 4: anything like that for months by yourself down in the
- 12:20Speaker 4: dark of a ship's people.
- 12:23Speaker 1: These guys, uh don't even have visas, so they can't
- 12:26Speaker 1: come off the ship. So they'll dock in the US
- 12:29Speaker 1: or dock in some port that sounds interesting. They're not
- 12:32Speaker 1: allowed to get off the ship.
- 12:33Speaker 2: They just stay in their dark ship. Special personality for
- 12:38Speaker 2: that job.
- 12:40Speaker 5: That was Frank, right, wasn't that his name? I don't know.
- 12:43Speaker 5: That was super interesting though.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, And whenever I see those ships, that's what I
- 12:47Speaker 4: think of now, got some really strange mole people living
- 12:51Speaker 4: on that ship.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Romanian mole people. Must not be allowed off.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Comes out of my mouth every time we go on
- 12:59Speaker 6: the boat with my family, because we'll go out of
- 13:01Speaker 6: the estuary and we're down on the sea level looking
- 13:04Speaker 6: up at those things, and I'm.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Always like, how do those how do they float? Right?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, they're you know, some terms are overused.
- 13:12Speaker 1: They are quite literally breathtaking to see from anywhere close
- 13:16Speaker 1: to them.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Well, they displaced more than the weight of the water.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Technically is how they float. But that's hard to imagine
- 13:22Speaker 4: that that even happened.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Yeah, they what Oh.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Keep your shaft oiled? M right right?
- 13:33Speaker 5: Wow? And a clip from shaft. Yeah, that was just
- 13:37Speaker 5: all sorts of enterprise.
- 13:38Speaker 2: It was a multi media presentation you gave us there,
- 13:40Speaker 2: I know, Well, I guess that's it.
