- 0:48Speaker 1: years strong. Got a great show coming to you this week.

- 0:58Speaker 1: if you're watching you too, about you doing, Buddy.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I'm good man. It's humid as ship, yes, and I'm
- 1:05Speaker 2: going to tank top inboxers. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it is really warm.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It was like ninety eight and then a rain and
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's just miserable. And I think it's in the third time.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm doing the show in my in in underpants.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, Well you're catching up to Len because I
- 1:20Speaker 1: think he does them in his underpants constantly.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I think he does every show.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yes, he does everything everything in life in underpants gets
- 1:27Speaker 1: mad when he has to leave the house.
- 1:28Speaker 2: It's like, all right to put on pants? What a
- 1:31Speaker 2: what a weird name? Underpants?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Underpants? Yes?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Under sure, we didn't really have vocabulary, right, Well, I'm
- 1:38Speaker 2: wearing pants. What about underneath these?
- 1:40Speaker 1: What about undergarments? What a terrible name?
- 1:45Speaker 2: And then somehow pantees? Yes, team about Yes, I don't know.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well, that's what I call mine panties. It's the hard
- 1:54Speaker 1: hitting This really is hard hitting content. Yeah, exactly, folks,
- 1:59Speaker 1: mid August here, this is what we got for you. Yeah, an, Yes,
- 2:05Speaker 1: we do have a good show. We do a good show.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We're gonna get into some Philly sports history, and then
- 2:09Speaker 1: from there, I'm gonna dive into Philadelphia Eagles. Boy man,
- 2:12Speaker 1: we had a big scare this week during the Eagles
- 2:16Speaker 1: public practice at Lincoln Financial Field landon Dickerson going down
- 2:20Speaker 1: with that knee injury. We're going to dive into that,
- 2:22Speaker 1: what it means for the offensive line, and then from
- 2:24Speaker 1: there we're gonna dive into a story that has been
- 2:28Speaker 1: previewed on the Athletic The Athletics Investigative Team recently published
- 2:32Speaker 1: a series of reports on stalking in sports. Sports figures
- 2:37Speaker 1: being stalked and what it means to them, their family,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which is what it means to us all being on
- 2:42Speaker 1: the internet, social media, how that has really created this
- 2:46Speaker 1: avenue of connectivity or or perceived connectivity between certain individuals
- 2:53Speaker 1: and celebrities and athletes as well. So from there then
- 2:56Speaker 1: we've got a ton of Phillies talk coming your way
- 2:59Speaker 1: this week We're thrown down on the table is a
- 3:01Speaker 1: great interview and discussion with our good friend Justin Clue
- 3:05Speaker 1: from the Hit and Season podcast and Baseball Perspectives. He's
- 3:08Speaker 1: going to join us for a great discussion about the
- 3:09Speaker 1: Phillies as we're getting ready towards the end of this
- 3:13Speaker 1: season here to start wrapping things up with this team,
- 3:16Speaker 1: various storylines as the Phills are slated to make the postseason.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I should really, you know, knock on wood here with that,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but let's just get started with this show here and
- 3:28Speaker 1: get started with this week in Philly sports history. We've
- 3:32Speaker 1: got a few doozies here, the first one being August thirteenth,
- 3:36Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two. You had an extraordinary spectacle that took
- 3:41Speaker 1: place at Veteran Stadium. Carl Wallenda. Yeah, do you all
- 3:45Speaker 1: know who Carl Wallenda is. He was the renowned tightrope walker.
- 3:49Speaker 1: He performed a very daring walk across the stadium's center,
- 3:52Speaker 1: suspended high above the field, a very unforgettable moment in
- 3:57Speaker 1: Philly sports history. And then from there, we're going to
- 3:59Speaker 1: move on to Augus fifteenth, nineteen ninety That is where
- 4:03Speaker 1: Terry Mulholland, Philly's pitcher Terry Mulholland, threw a dominant no
- 4:07Speaker 1: hitter in a six zero victory over the San Francisco Giants.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It was it was the eighth no hitter of that
- 4:14Speaker 1: Major League base Ball season, which set a modern record
- 4:17Speaker 1: at that point. But it was also the first nine
- 4:20Speaker 1: inning no hitter by a Phillies pitcher in Philadelphia, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: the very first one at Veterans Stadium. Then, moving on
- 4:27Speaker 1: August tenth, Tarrell Owens his famous, infamous, his famous, infamous
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yes driveway interview. August ten, two thousand and five, he
- 4:37Speaker 1: staged one of the most bizarre and emblematic moments in
- 4:40Speaker 1: Philly sports culture. He conducted a shirtless sit up interview
- 4:45Speaker 1: rate in his driveway in the midst of the Eagles
- 4:48Speaker 1: locker room drama that was going on. He was just
- 4:51Speaker 1: doing all those sit ups in his driveway. What an
- 4:54Speaker 1: image and curls and curls questions at one point, Yeah, yes, absolutely,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and then hi. Finally from my standpoint here in terms
- 5:02Speaker 1: of Philly sports history. August thirteenth, two thousand and nine,
- 5:05Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles made a very bold and controversial move
- 5:09Speaker 1: by signing quarterback Michael Vick coming off of his incarceration
- 5:13Speaker 1: amidst a complete national debacle in case where he had
- 5:17Speaker 1: been killing dogs, and stakes were pretty high for the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Eagles in terms of that signing. And yeah, that was
- 5:25Speaker 1: August thirteenth, two thousand and nine. Man, I can't believe, man,
- 5:28Speaker 1: time really flies here. But did you have anything in
- 5:31Speaker 1: sports history here or anything you wanted to reflect on?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Let me just a couple of comments that Carl will
- 5:37Speaker 2: end a thing, just I really would. I really missed
- 5:41Speaker 2: the days when Major League Baseball would do minor league
- 5:44Speaker 2: what the minor leagues do now?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Yeah, or for entertainment, just bring yeah, bringing out some
- 5:49Speaker 1: bizarre stuff.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I love going to Harrisburg Senator games and
- 5:54Speaker 2: watching the dogs run around with the monkeys on their
- 5:58Speaker 2: backs like their horse's a blast. I love it. Personal
- 6:03Speaker 2: story about the mulhalland nineteen ninety no hitter. The fifteenth
- 6:07Speaker 2: watched that game on TV and then my dad took
- 6:09Speaker 2: me the next day to the game, oh Sunday because
- 6:13Speaker 2: my birthday. It was my fourteenth birthday.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Oh somebody's got a birthday coming up, Yes.
- 6:18Speaker 2: But watch that no hitter. And then the next day
- 6:20Speaker 2: went to the game and Von Hayes won the game.
- 6:22Speaker 2: In the bottom of the ninth against the Giants, I
- 6:24Speaker 2: met Roger mcdallas signed baseball for me. Nice, very very
- 6:28Speaker 2: memorable birthday. Nice yeah, and t on the driveway. What
- 6:32Speaker 2: a nightmare. I'm gonna I'm going to focus on another
- 6:34Speaker 2: too highlight because that was the end of the Eagles
- 6:38Speaker 2: run there for a while until like eight. But August twelfth,
- 6:43Speaker 2: two thousand and four, he actually premiered, or he debuted
- 6:46Speaker 2: with the Eagles in preseason against the Ravens, who actually
- 6:49Speaker 2: tried to sign him if you remember, trade for him
- 6:52Speaker 2: and it fell through. And first play of the game
- 6:55Speaker 2: on offense, McNab hits him for eighty yards right in
- 6:59Speaker 2: the numbers, yep, and he does his first he does
- 7:02Speaker 2: the first wave thing. Yes, and it was I was
- 7:05Speaker 2: just like, likey, I was just so happy. I was like,
- 7:09Speaker 2: my god, we finally have a receiver. It would be
- 7:11Speaker 2: so much fun.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It wasn't Todd Pinkston or James Thrash.
- 7:15Speaker 2: James Thrash. Yeah, I'm not going to comment on Michael Vick.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I just think it was funny. You're comming, You're like
- 7:22Speaker 2: he came in like with some controversy. He killed dogs, Yes,
- 7:26Speaker 2: yellow a little controversial. Yes, I went to prison for it. Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 2: oh my gosh, but you did not mention today is
- 7:33Speaker 2: Bobby Clark's seventy sixth birthday.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Oh all right, Oh I missed that one, thank yous.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I went out in the Google yes, and and it
- 7:42Speaker 2: hit me with hey, non Flyers fan, it's Bobby Clark's birthday.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Just reminded and yeah, I was like, so seventy six
- 7:49Speaker 2: my parents' age.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Wow, I'm glad you're reminded us of that. That's an
- 7:52Speaker 1: important one.
- 7:53Speaker 2: That's how long it's been since they won the Cup.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I'm sorry to bring it up, but like I saw
- 7:57Speaker 2: the age, I'm like, oh my god, Like, that's my dad.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So we're never gonna win one. No, No, the rebuild's
- 8:08Speaker 1: going all right, we got we got Flyers talk coming
- 8:10Speaker 1: your way at some point down the road here, so
- 8:12Speaker 1: we uh, we're gonna be getting into them.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Was that from twenty fourteen that come in or
- 8:20Speaker 2: twenty eighteen. It's from every year, twenty twenty, it's every
- 8:24Speaker 2: year at this point. Yes, Well, let's dive into some
- 8:28Speaker 2: Eagles talk.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Here. We're in the midst of training camp. Birds and
- 8:32Speaker 1: US fans. We had a big scare at the Eagles
- 8:35Speaker 1: public training camp practice this past week when Pro Bowl
- 8:38Speaker 1: left guard Landed Dickerson went down with a knee injury.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And while it's a meniscus injury, it shouldn't prevent him
- 8:44Speaker 1: from starting Week one from what we know at this point, Eric,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I mean, it's still concerning given how this offensive line
- 8:53Speaker 1: needs to perform. I mean, if the offense is going
- 8:56Speaker 1: to see any sort of success this season, and you
- 9:01Speaker 1: have a backup in Brett Toath who stepped in and
- 9:05Speaker 1: he honestly did he didn't have a great practice, you
- 9:08Speaker 1: know when he was playing, because you know they're working
- 9:11Speaker 1: in conjunction and practicing with the Cleveland Browns before this
- 9:14Speaker 1: upcoming their second preseason game. Brett Toath did not have
- 9:18Speaker 1: a great outing at all. And it's like, oh my gosh,
- 9:21Speaker 1: we've got this weak link and we've got even though
- 9:26Speaker 1: the Eagles have depth, we've got this guy who's now
- 9:28Speaker 1: been on the team for quite some time. And Brett
- 9:30Speaker 1: Toath he's been there now for the past few years
- 9:33Speaker 1: and he's been serviceable. But man, I mean, Landon Dickerson
- 9:38Speaker 1: needs to stay healthier. This offense is not going to
- 9:40Speaker 1: be able to perform the way that it needs to
- 9:41Speaker 1: perform because you look at that left side of the line,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Jordan Malatta, Landon Dickerson, they are a wall. They're like
- 9:48Speaker 1: a wall of death, whether it's in past protection or
- 9:51Speaker 1: whether it's run blocking and Saquan's right behind them, or
- 9:55Speaker 1: whoever will Shipley is right behind them. Losing Landon Dickerson, man,
- 10:00Speaker 1: I genuinely almost had a heart attack when I was
- 10:02Speaker 1: reading Twitter when he went down and he was on
- 10:04Speaker 1: the field, like, it just it can't it can't have
- 10:08Speaker 1: We can't lose these guys during the season or things
- 10:10Speaker 1: could go rough.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, And I my first thought was like, so we
- 10:16Speaker 2: had pretty good injury health last year. Yes, and you
- 10:20Speaker 2: know it's bound to turn a little bit. And when
- 10:23Speaker 2: I saw it was him, you know, at first, I
- 10:26Speaker 2: was like, oh, you know Dickerson. I thought about him, like,
- 10:29Speaker 2: Dickerson's kind of taken that mantle up of you know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: being that complete asshole on the offensive line and all
- 10:37Speaker 2: the good Eagles team. John Running was that guy back
- 10:39Speaker 2: in the day.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Even Kelsey to a certain extent, you know what I mean,
- 10:43Speaker 1: kind of like taken that from Jason Kelcey and I
- 10:46Speaker 1: always thought it.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Was kind of Kelsey and Kelsey and uh and and
- 10:50Speaker 2: Johnson Lane kind of kind of combo Jordani a lot
- 10:54Speaker 2: is He's he's tough on the field, but he's kind
- 10:57Speaker 2: of kind of a teddy bear, you know.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Feel lander for me was like if you saw his
- 11:02Speaker 2: like pregame speeches to the other offensive lineman, he was
- 11:05Speaker 2: just like, let's go, let's go murder these dudes. Let's
- 11:07Speaker 2: just wash them. Yeah. And when I saw it, I
- 11:10Speaker 2: thought about that. I thought it was him, Like, man,
- 11:12Speaker 2: that's one guy we can't miss that. He's the one
- 11:15Speaker 2: He he kind of gels that team together. I know,
- 11:19Speaker 2: the skilled position players love him because he you know,
- 11:21Speaker 2: he because he has that attitude. And and just watching
- 11:25Speaker 2: the Eagles last year, like I love that we have
- 11:28Speaker 2: that those tiffany skill players. Yeah, like both receivers, Saquon,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but the whole reason they won last year was the
- 11:37Speaker 2: defensive offensive lines. Like that was the whole, the whole
- 11:40Speaker 2: thing behind it. And he was he was he was
- 11:43Speaker 2: the one guy. I was like, man, my first thought
- 11:46Speaker 2: was okay, I was like no, when I heard it
- 11:49Speaker 2: was just a meniscus. I get the emb thing going on.
- 11:52Speaker 2: My head, Dart, like is going to do the six
- 11:56Speaker 2: month thing or is it just a just an injured
- 11:59Speaker 2: minist So I hope it's not an ongoing thing throughout
- 12:03Speaker 2: the year. I hope it's if he has to miss
- 12:07Speaker 2: week one, I'm okay with that, Like, let that thing
- 12:10Speaker 2: heal to the point where it's not going to be
- 12:13Speaker 2: a lingering thing, like like much like Aaron Nola, you know, yeah,
- 12:17Speaker 2: hit it lingering and then eventually wound up missing like
- 12:19Speaker 2: two to three months. So a little scary. I'm hoping
- 12:23Speaker 2: that's like the last thing from preseason isn't anything worse
- 12:26Speaker 2: than preseason three. Like, look at the Chargers. They just
- 12:30Speaker 2: signed that guy they're left tackle to this monster deal.
- 12:34Speaker 2: He's like the highest paid and then he goes down
- 12:36Speaker 2: like a week later. It's like your whole season is
- 12:39Speaker 2: like tanked. Yes, before your first year. It just sucks.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yes, We're I was on the Opposition Territory pod this
- 12:45Speaker 1: week talking about where the Indianapolis Colts are going to go.
- 12:48Speaker 1: That's a team in an organization that they're just looking.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They're just looking to get some sort of momentum. But
- 12:54Speaker 1: what happens They have like three cornerbacks that went down
- 12:57Speaker 1: like their defense is one of the worst in the
- 13:00Speaker 1: leg and then they have this hope that they get
- 13:02Speaker 1: some defensive players in free agency. They've got some draft
- 13:05Speaker 1: picks looking to make their mark, and all of a sudden,
- 13:09Speaker 1: three cornerbacks going down right off the bat, Like, how
- 13:12Speaker 1: do you get out from under that? And like, I
- 13:15Speaker 1: think to myself, with this Landon Dickerson situation, in this
- 13:17Speaker 1: meniscus injury, might he be good for the first ten
- 13:20Speaker 1: weeks of the season. Yeah, And the Eagles athletic or
- 13:24Speaker 1: I should say, their health team is gonna have to
- 13:27Speaker 1: just I mean, they're gonna have to be stellar with
- 13:29Speaker 1: him this year because maybe week fourteen sixteen, maybe things
- 13:32Speaker 1: aren't feeling all that great. And then you got the
- 13:35Speaker 1: expectations of a playoff run as well. Is this team
- 13:38Speaker 1: of dynasty? Those questions are lingering people's minds as well.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It's tough to do with a meniscus injury here.
- 13:46Speaker 2: That's why I like, let it heal early and have
- 13:49Speaker 2: him down the stretch just in case. I mean like that,
- 13:51Speaker 2: I think that would be the play. And plus you'll
- 13:54Speaker 2: you would see you have a tough going forward, right.
- 13:56Speaker 2: They let him play the first two weeks and if
- 13:58Speaker 2: he sucks, then okay, we understand the timeline of this
- 14:01Speaker 2: injury now throwing throwing him to the Wolves week fifteen
- 14:08Speaker 2: against you know yet against the Combs, and you're like
- 14:12Speaker 2: in the tight race for first place, Like that's not
- 14:14Speaker 2: the place to throw them in. I think this is
- 14:15Speaker 2: it now, because you like the first seasons are what Dallas,
- 14:18Speaker 2: who I'm not scared of whatsoever? Yep. Week two is
- 14:20Speaker 2: the Chiefs, and Chiefs are gonna win that game. Everyone
- 14:24Speaker 2: just be ready for it. They're gonna come out. It's
- 14:29Speaker 2: just gonna happen, and that the refs will be in
- 14:31Speaker 2: the bag for them because it's just a revenge game
- 14:33Speaker 2: and kind of like just win win that Cowboys game
- 14:36Speaker 2: and let let the tooth could play talk whatever his
- 14:39Speaker 2: name is, Toth, Yeah, Toth, but it's t o t
- 14:42Speaker 2: h Right. Yeah, this is America. It's tough. I don't know.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I just think that's the way to go. And I
- 14:51Speaker 2: hope this is the last time we're talking about preseason injuries. Yes,
- 14:55Speaker 2: that's when things get bad.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Absolutely, yeah, all right, well, folks were getting ready to
- 15:00Speaker 1: take our first break here. But first and foremost, if
- 15:03Speaker 1: you are new to watching the show on YouTube, you

- 15:32Speaker 1: You're gonna get a lot more than sports over there.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I can tell you tell you that for sure. I
- 15:36Speaker 1: can assure you that. So we are gonna take a
- 15:39Speaker 1: break here and when we get back, gonna dive into
- 15:43Speaker 1: the threat of stalkers in the world of sports, and
- 15:46Speaker 1: also a ton of Philly's talk. Stick with us, all right,
- 15:50Speaker 1: we are back. Great to be in your ears. It's
- 15:53Speaker 1: great to be on your screens right now if you're
- 15:55Speaker 1: watching on YouTube. Wanted to get into the threat of
- 15:59Speaker 1: stalker in the world of sports because the Athletic recently
- 16:04Speaker 1: came out with a series of reports on stalking in sports.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Their investigative team there did a pretty interesting series, and
- 16:11Speaker 1: we wanted to give our thoughts on how the Internet
- 16:14Speaker 1: and folks feeling like they are close to athletes, close
- 16:19Speaker 1: to celebrities, quite frankly close to even you know, political folks,
- 16:23Speaker 1: people who are well known in their communities or their states,
- 16:27Speaker 1: or they're a member of Congress or whatever the course
- 16:30Speaker 1: or whatever the case is. But in terms of sports here,
- 16:34Speaker 1: a lot of people, because of social media, feel like
- 16:36Speaker 1: they're close to people when they're really not. Social media
- 16:39Speaker 1: has really changed the world in that regard. Interestingly enough, again,
- 16:45Speaker 1: the investigative team at the Athletic talked about a bunch
- 16:49Speaker 1: of different examples over the years eric that have taken place.
- 16:54Speaker 1: One with a woman stalking NFL wide receiver TJ. Hushman
- 16:59Speaker 1: Zada to the point where she changed her last name
- 17:02Speaker 1: to hushman Zada and used it to gain entry into
- 17:06Speaker 1: the gated community where he and his family lived. Last year,
- 17:10Speaker 1: a forty year old man was arrested after professing his
- 17:13Speaker 1: love for Dallas Wing's rookie Paige Bucher's, who was playing
- 17:18Speaker 1: at Yukon. The man said he was going to propose
- 17:20Speaker 1: to her and would choose to die if he could
- 17:24Speaker 1: not be with her. We have also had some folks
- 17:27Speaker 1: have heard about Aaron Donald. In May, the Los Angeles
- 17:33Speaker 1: court granted him and his family a five year restraining
- 17:36Speaker 1: order against a woman named Janelle Anwar, who Donald said
- 17:40Speaker 1: had been harassing him. Had been harassing his family since
- 17:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty. I mean, this woman was sending multiple packages
- 17:49Speaker 1: to his home. There were threats against his son's life.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And it's it's really incredible where the Internet has taken us.
- 17:59Speaker 1: It's give us some great things over the years, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: it's given some awful things. We've all heard about the
- 18:03Speaker 1: Caitlyn Clark stalking situation. Michael Lewis, fifty five, who was
- 18:07Speaker 1: arrested in January in Indianapolis. He sent Clark more than
- 18:11Speaker 1: eight hundred threatening and sexually explicit messages over the course
- 18:16Speaker 1: of a month. This stuff happens because of social media,
- 18:19Speaker 1: because people feel like they're they're close to athletes, they're
- 18:22Speaker 1: close to celebrities because that's what athletics, professional athletics are.
- 18:26Speaker 1: These folks become celebrities, and it's a it's it's pretty disturbing,
- 18:31Speaker 1: you know, and it's just it's not slowing down anytime soon. Eric,
- 18:36Speaker 1: It's not slowing down at all. But I thought it
- 18:38Speaker 1: was an interesting story and to see where see where
- 18:41Speaker 1: this is going. I hope it raises some awareness for
- 18:43Speaker 1: people to just you know, just kno, get the fuck off?
- 18:46Speaker 2: How about that?
- 18:47Speaker 1: But then again, people have mental illnesses, so they're probably
- 18:50Speaker 1: not gonna be able to knock at the fuck off sometimes.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And I man a couple bunch of thoughts on this. Yes,
- 18:58Speaker 2: the craziest. The craziest part of it, Aaron Donald, One
- 19:00Speaker 2: was the woman wound up a filing from for divorce
- 19:06Speaker 2: from him even though they've never y.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Weren't married.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Throw that one out of court right away. But that
- 19:14Speaker 2: is that is Bonker's behavior. I want a divorce, you have,
- 19:20Speaker 2: you got it. I never met you before, but I
- 19:25Speaker 2: I man said, my first thought was, okay, you talk
- 19:27Speaker 2: about the social media aspect of it, right, And I've
- 19:30Speaker 2: I've heard that a lot of a lot of pro
- 19:34Speaker 2: sport leagues now n b A, NFL, all of them
- 19:38Speaker 2: when when players get drafted or join new teams, they
- 19:41Speaker 2: actually put them through like social media training now on
- 19:45Speaker 2: top of like financial like how to how to get
- 19:48Speaker 2: how to how to manage your finances, that kind of stuff,
- 19:51Speaker 2: and the social media one's big and it's to try
- 19:56Speaker 2: and temper you know, the kind of the behavior that
- 19:59Speaker 2: Kevin Durant does. Right, Like I read the story and
- 20:02Speaker 2: my first thought was, like, how does how does Kevin
- 20:03Speaker 2: Durant not have at least two or three stalkers at
- 20:05Speaker 2: this point that I have tried to enter his house? Yes,
- 20:08Speaker 2: because he is one of the most responsive, agitated, Like
- 20:12Speaker 2: he will go after a guy with twenty followers, yes,
- 20:15Speaker 2: who's like, you know, your field goal percent who suck
- 20:18Speaker 2: last year, and he'll be like, oh yeah, dog, and
- 20:19Speaker 2: he'll just like lay out his entire sactly the past
- 20:22Speaker 2: three years off Basketball Reference And you're like, KD, you
- 20:25Speaker 2: don't have to do this. You're one of the top
- 20:27Speaker 2: fifteen players of all time.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Like, but.
- 20:32Speaker 2: You know, someone like someone like him should probably dial
- 20:34Speaker 2: it back a little bit. He isn't He obviously doesn't
- 20:36Speaker 2: give a shit, but right, And I'm not blaming the athletes.
- 20:39Speaker 2: I just think that, like, again, you can't engage in
- 20:43Speaker 2: today's social media age. Everyone's going crazy. Everything's internal, Like
- 20:47Speaker 2: people sit at home and they don't leave their house.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And like, I think this athlete loves me. It's not
- 20:52Speaker 2: just athletes, it's it's actors, it's singers too. But then
- 20:55Speaker 2: you also have to like realize, like there's been nutty,
- 20:59Speaker 2: crazy people have been stalking people for years. Yes, yes,
- 21:02Speaker 2: like the guy who shot John Lennon, the guy who
- 21:05Speaker 2: shot uh. I just had in my head Ronald Reagan,
- 21:09Speaker 2: you know, to impress, to impress Jodie Foster. Like this
- 21:12Speaker 2: has been ongoing well before the Internet even existed and
- 21:17Speaker 2: now but now it just makes it. It makes getting
- 21:20Speaker 2: to those people, like the story of Mark David Chapman
- 21:22Speaker 2: I think is one that shot Lennon the story of
- 21:25Speaker 2: him getting to John Lennon in New York City, Yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 2: like on a bus and all this kind of stuff.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Now you can just like tweet it the person, yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 2: you know, and start kind of a dialogue hope maybe,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and then go from there. I think the social media
- 21:40Speaker 2: aspect makes it easier to stalk people, But I don't
- 21:43Speaker 2: think it. I don't think it. I don't think it
- 21:46Speaker 2: creates the want to stalk more because we're always going
- 21:50Speaker 2: to have people that are mentally ill and they're going
- 21:52Speaker 2: to like focus.
- 21:53Speaker 1: On You make a good point there, But I do
- 21:56Speaker 1: think when celebrities are athletes, if and when they are
- 22:00Speaker 1: shooting some video in their house or in their backyard,
- 22:04Speaker 1: at their pool, in their front yard wherever, with their family,
- 22:07Speaker 1: their kids, their wife, whoever. There is a certain intimacy
- 22:11Speaker 1: that comes with that where people may feel watching it
- 22:14Speaker 1: that they are a part of it. And I'm not
- 22:17Speaker 1: saying it's right by any stretch, but it's yeah, we
- 22:24Speaker 1: are not celebrities by any stretch on this podcast show
- 22:27Speaker 1: at all, and what I do in my life from
- 22:30Speaker 1: an electoral and political standpoint, there is no celebrity. But
- 22:34Speaker 1: I've had a number of threats over the years with
- 22:37Speaker 1: certain things. My family hasn't been threatened. I've certainly been
- 22:41Speaker 1: threatened for various reasons, whether it's certain votes that I
- 22:45Speaker 1: take or just because I am who I am. And
- 22:48Speaker 1: it's a little disconcerting because those people have seen me
- 22:52Speaker 1: online and that's where they have quote gotten to know me,
- 22:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And it's like, yeah, you
- 22:57Speaker 1: start shooting videos in your house on vacation or wherever.
- 23:02Speaker 1: If you're a celebrity, if you're a professional sports individual
- 23:06Speaker 1: and you're like if you're like KD and you are
- 23:08Speaker 1: so good at what you do, you know, and you
- 23:11Speaker 1: start letting people in, it's it's it becomes a real
- 23:14Speaker 1: slippery slope.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Well, some of the threats to you were a warranted
- 23:19Speaker 2: I'm just.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Scared how all of them say they weren't, you know.
- 23:25Speaker 2: In in Kd's defense, like, you know, he might not
- 23:28Speaker 2: have stalkers because he's so open with people. Yeah, you know,
- 23:31Speaker 2: maybe a guy trash talks him online or a woman
- 23:34Speaker 2: trash I've seen that before. He comes right back at him.
- 23:37Speaker 2: It's like, well, I'm a normal person. Yeah.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Thing he kind of just goes, yeah, go fuck yourself,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna kick your ass pretty much.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Like like I've seen footage of him at concerts, like
- 23:46Speaker 2: just smoking blunt after blunt and it's like, well that
- 23:51Speaker 2: makes him, that normalizes him a little bit, right. Yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 2: there's no good answer. I I would advise I've never
- 23:58Speaker 2: seen a video in Katie's house. Yeah, I would advise
- 24:01Speaker 2: athletes or all celebrities not to film in your home. Yeah,
- 24:06Speaker 2: never ever, whatsoever. But this is never going to go away.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I just think it's been around for a long time.
- 24:12Speaker 2: There's always gonna be lonely people out there that can't
- 24:14Speaker 2: or lonely mentally ill probably, and just it's easier to
- 24:20Speaker 2: focus on a celebrity than your neighbor because your your
- 24:25Speaker 2: neighbor's boring. Yeah, exactly, like that person's life is already boring. Yes,
- 24:30Speaker 2: And it's like, why would I focus on the ould
- 24:32Speaker 2: lady next door with no family? I'd rather focus on
- 24:35Speaker 2: you know, George Clooney, that's old. I am just an
- 24:38Speaker 2: actor's name, right, But like, I don't know, I just
- 24:41Speaker 2: think like it's just never going to go away. But
- 24:43Speaker 2: I do think celebrities or whatever online like just dial
- 24:49Speaker 2: it back. And I'm not blaming them, just saying like
- 24:50Speaker 2: there's right, crazy fucking people.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Absolutely, absolutely, yeah. We'd like to get your thoughts on this, folks.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. Uh, you know,
- 24:59Speaker 1: this is one of those stories that you know, it
- 25:02Speaker 1: takes takes some thought and some depth, and we'd love
- 25:05Speaker 1: to hear from you. Shoot us off an email here
- 25:07Speaker 1: and we'd love to respond to you here on the
- 25:09Speaker 1: show again. Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. So
- 25:12Speaker 1: let's move along and get into some Phillies talk here,
- 25:15Speaker 1: because the Phillies pitching situation, which really has been this
- 25:20Speaker 1: team's bread and butter all season long. We've seen the good,
- 25:23Speaker 1: we've seen the bad, and right here in mid August,
- 25:26Speaker 1: there's definitely good coming out of the bullpen. They finally
- 25:29Speaker 1: have an actual closer with Johan Duran. He has been dominant.
- 25:34Speaker 1: We actually have a closer. This team has a closer
- 25:38Speaker 1: with a special role, a specific role. I mean, we've
- 25:43Speaker 1: been waiting for it for years. I'm sure I'm going
- 25:44Speaker 1: to be getting into it with Justin Klue coming up
- 25:47Speaker 1: in our interview. But on the flip side of that,
- 25:51Speaker 1: we've got the quote bad. The challenge here at this point,
- 25:54Speaker 1: which really is Ranger Suarez continuing to struggle here, and
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm I'm getting very concerned with him because there was
- 26:02Speaker 1: such such high hopes for what he was going to be.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And let's get into him last. Let's talk about the
- 26:10Speaker 1: good stuff first, because you know, the real question is
- 26:13Speaker 1: will you know Johann Duran? Will he actually be the
- 26:16Speaker 1: answer to what the Phillies have been needing in this bullpen?
- 26:19Speaker 1: So far, so good here. I mean the immense pressure
- 26:22Speaker 1: that he is going to be under when the Major
- 26:24Speaker 1: League Baseball postseason begins, I think is going to be
- 26:28Speaker 1: pretty significant. But since the trade deadline, I mean, the
- 26:31Speaker 1: Phillies have been eric one of the best teams in baseball,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and they are starting to look like a complete group.
- 26:37Speaker 1: And yes there are hiccups, some ups and downs tonight
- 26:40Speaker 1: losing a real terrible game to the Reds, but you
- 26:44Speaker 1: know they are a top of the NL East at
- 26:47Speaker 1: this point. For a good part of the season, this
- 26:51Speaker 1: team has been at the top of the NL East here.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Now they finally have a closer on this team who
- 26:57Speaker 1: is dominant. I it's such good news.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I love it. There's no downside. And what they gave
- 27:04Speaker 2: up for him is like peanuts. Just the way he's
- 27:07Speaker 2: performed if he watches stuff, it's like we kind of
- 27:11Speaker 2: ripped the Twins off. I'm not sure what's going on
- 27:13Speaker 2: with their leadership, and like they're trying to they were
- 27:15Speaker 2: trying to sell the team one point. Something's going on there,
- 27:18Speaker 2: but I was glad to take advantage of them.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I think they were smoking a blunt with KD at
- 27:23Speaker 1: a concert or something when they made the deal.
- 27:28Speaker 2: But man, I haven't felt this good about a closer
- 27:32Speaker 2: since Lydge. Yes, in eight I know papal Bond made
- 27:36Speaker 2: that run and you know, in like what twenty ten
- 27:39Speaker 2: or whatever it was, but I never felt like super
- 27:43Speaker 2: confidently came in when lydgit o eight, when he just
- 27:46Speaker 2: we just ran the table. It was like, this guy's
- 27:49Speaker 2: never going to miss this, is it? Yeah, Duran has
- 27:52Speaker 2: that feel. He really does. And it's not like Lydge
- 27:56Speaker 2: had his two pitches, he had the sinker and the fastball. Duran.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Duran has this knuckle curve that hits the back foot
- 28:05Speaker 2: of a left hand or batter twice against he did
- 28:09Speaker 2: against the Redsie did in the game before that, Like,
- 28:12Speaker 2: I'm like, this guy is insane. Yes, against the Rangers,
- 28:16Speaker 2: did twice and I haven't I haven't seen that on
- 28:19Speaker 2: a Phillies team since probably Lydge. So and then and
- 28:23Speaker 2: then you also have you have Alvarado coming back, So
- 28:26Speaker 2: you have two legit closers now for the rest of
- 28:28Speaker 2: the regular season once he comes back. If I was
- 28:31Speaker 2: you know, if he worked out and stuff. But that
- 28:33Speaker 2: is that is the good. The other good schwore. We're
- 28:35Speaker 2: still n L m VP candidate. Like just Mark is
- 28:40Speaker 2: getting going again, right is.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Just so ridiculously consistent right now with Trey Turner's fantastic.
- 28:48Speaker 2: You're starting pitching your top two guys Wheeler and Sanchez,
- 28:53Speaker 2: I mean Sanchez a little shaky tonight, but he was awesome.
- 28:55Speaker 2: That I his last start. That that's the good like
- 28:58Speaker 2: you have you sometimes in the playoffs. So you just
- 29:01Speaker 2: have a great one two. Yeah, you're in good shape.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Now that bad Yes, let's get into that year man, dude,
- 29:07Speaker 1: Rangers swore as holy freaking craps er since the All
- 29:11Speaker 1: Star Break has jumped to six point five to nine
- 29:15Speaker 1: after last year five point six five second second half
- 29:19Speaker 1: of the season. The year prior to that, twenty twenty three,
- 29:23Speaker 1: four point five seven. So the second half of these
- 29:27Speaker 1: seasons for Rangers Swarrez have absolutely been crap. He has
- 29:32Speaker 1: been crap in the bed and it's getting worse year
- 29:34Speaker 1: after year. This is the third year in a row. Here,
- 29:37Speaker 1: there's there's some I don't know if there's something specific
- 29:41Speaker 1: going on, because look, we know that he's been battling
- 29:43Speaker 1: injury the past couple seasons. Here, Who the hell knows
- 29:45Speaker 1: if something is going on now, but this is the
- 29:48Speaker 1: quote bad here.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I looked at his stats post All Star Game
- 29:55Speaker 2: the past three years and not good, very eye opening,
- 29:59Speaker 2: very scary. Yeah, And it did make me think, like,
- 30:02Speaker 2: is he is he a first half guy? Like we've
- 30:06Speaker 2: seen that where guys just you know, but that's usually
- 30:09Speaker 2: younger players that that. That's kind of bothersome thing to know.
- 30:12Speaker 1: With Aaronola over the years too.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but for I'll ask you, I thought about this.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It is sore as an issue of just not being
- 30:21Speaker 2: in shape. That does you wear it down?
- 30:23Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yeah, like I I've heard, like, Okay, he has a
- 30:27Speaker 2: hard time staying healthy the past two years. Well if
- 30:30Speaker 2: he was in better shape like Sanchez or Wheeler, would
- 30:33Speaker 2: he stay healthier and would he have more endurance going
- 30:36Speaker 2: you know forward in the season, because one year is
- 30:40Speaker 2: like okay, we'll see two years, three years is a pattern.
- 30:44Speaker 2: It's like okay, yea ranger, what's going on, dude? You
- 30:47Speaker 2: can't wear down wear down in the beginning of the year,
- 30:50Speaker 2: not the end. So obviously we have some kind of
- 30:52Speaker 2: I think he has some kind of like physical.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Just physical limitations here at this point.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Yeah, or maybe just get in shape. Yes, he's kind
- 31:01Speaker 2: of doey. Let's just say it right out loud.
- 31:03Speaker 1: This looks a little like Ryll.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I would love to see you trying to throw a
- 31:10Speaker 2: ball like full blast.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Oh, it'd be horrendous, it really would. It'd be like
- 31:16Speaker 1: the time Len tried to do it at his last
- 31:18Speaker 1: time he was ever playing fantasy football with us. He's
- 31:21Speaker 1: over at the old house and he just threw it
- 31:23Speaker 1: right into the ground.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I threw a I threw a rocket into the chair,
- 31:30Speaker 2: hit the target, knocked it over, and then Len stepped
- 31:33Speaker 2: up and he wound up and it went twenty feet
- 31:38Speaker 2: bam in the grass. Killed a groundhoger, I swear to
- 31:41Speaker 2: guess a worm burner.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yes, yes, Oh my god. Well, buddy, before I let
- 31:50Speaker 1: you go, do you have anything else for this Phillies
- 31:52Speaker 1: team here? I mean, look, I'm I'm confident overall. I'm
- 31:56Speaker 1: confident where they're at. You know, there's gonna be some
- 31:59Speaker 1: ups and downs, but the one of the best teams
- 32:01Speaker 1: in baseball. And I'm gonna talk to Justin klue in
- 32:04Speaker 1: a little bit here about what Dave Dombrowski has met
- 32:08Speaker 1: meant to this organization, getting it to a point of
- 32:12Speaker 1: whether this team is relevant year after year. It'll be
- 32:16Speaker 1: interesting to hear what Justin says. But you know, I
- 32:19Speaker 1: think there's there's something to be said for where this
- 32:21Speaker 1: team was about a decade ago and where they are
- 32:24Speaker 1: right now. It's I feel good this season about their
- 32:29Speaker 1: chances in the postseason of not getting knocked out in
- 32:31Speaker 1: the first or second round. Well, I just have to.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Compare myself ourselves to other teams right now, right like
- 32:37Speaker 2: that are at top of the NL. Yeah, forget about
- 32:40Speaker 2: the Brewers. They're hot as hell. They one twelve straight.
- 32:42Speaker 2: They're starting pitching as bonkers. They've average eight and a
- 32:45Speaker 2: half runs per game the past twelve wins. I'm not
- 32:49Speaker 2: even we're not competing with that. It's fine. The Mets
- 32:52Speaker 2: are in second place. They're starting pitching is in shambles. Okay,
- 32:56Speaker 2: like we at least have two aces, and we're talking
- 32:58Speaker 2: about Rangers Suarez and and Nola coming back. Maybe Painter
- 33:01Speaker 2: comes up. The Mets starting pitching is disastrous. So is
- 33:07Speaker 2: the Dodgers. They're starting pitching is is horrendous. The Cubs
- 33:11Speaker 2: isn't that great. So like it, you know, we talked
- 33:15Speaker 2: about before the show, like do we get hot too
- 33:17Speaker 2: soon because you know we're we're now we're paranoid, and
- 33:20Speaker 2: it's just like, yeah, yeah, today, tonight's loss was not great,
- 33:26Speaker 2: but you're going into Washington now for like what four
- 33:29Speaker 2: straight games? Yea, the team should pounce and like you
- 33:32Speaker 2: go right back up, and like you come out. You
- 33:36Speaker 2: should come out, come out of this weekend being up
- 33:38Speaker 2: like six games on the Mets. That's if you're not,
- 33:40Speaker 2: then we'll have to talk next week. Well, no, I
- 33:43Speaker 2: won't be in the show next week, right right?
- 33:45Speaker 1: Look I I oh, I know somebody's going to be
- 33:48Speaker 1: taking her daughter to college. My goodness. Really quick though
- 33:55Speaker 1: about the Mets, because like before the season started, I'm
- 33:59Speaker 1: thinking of my elf. They got the biggest free agent
- 34:02Speaker 1: signing before the season started and Wan Soto, and I'm like, man,
- 34:06Speaker 1: it's I'm like, man, this team is gonna It's what
- 34:09Speaker 1: the team needed in order to get over that hump.
- 34:11Speaker 1: And guess what, No, I was wrong, Like in my brain,
- 34:14Speaker 1: I was wrong. The Mets are where they're at right now.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Juan Soto hasn't been that guy. He's a great baseball player,
- 34:21Speaker 1: but he hasn't been that guy to say, you know what,
- 34:23Speaker 1: I'm going to carry the team on my shoulders right
- 34:26Speaker 1: now while the pitching is struggling. I don't know. There
- 34:30Speaker 1: are certain storylines and certain aspects of baseball where you
- 34:34Speaker 1: can reflect on things hindsight's twenty twenty. But you know,
- 34:38Speaker 1: the best baseball player in the world may not actually
- 34:40Speaker 1: get you to the Promised Land. No.
- 34:43Speaker 2: The good things with the Phillies is they have longtime
- 34:46Speaker 2: veterans that have been on this team for a long time. Yeah,
- 34:49Speaker 2: and the Mets don't quite have that. Pete Alonzo's hot
- 34:53Speaker 2: as hell right now. Yeah, he's the one deal. I
- 34:54Speaker 2: haven't really scared within that team. But like Lindor sucks
- 34:57Speaker 2: right now, and Soto's his first year and like you know,
- 35:01Speaker 2: like who knows what's gonna happen with him in the playoffs.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Have we seen him do anything in the play he
- 35:07Speaker 2: did for the Nationals? Yeah, right, But the Philly has
- 35:12Speaker 2: been there before and that that's the one thing I'm
- 35:13Speaker 2: gonna hold on too, Like they they have done this
- 35:16Speaker 2: now how many years in a row. I don't want
- 35:18Speaker 2: them to just get in like in the past it's
- 35:20Speaker 2: like always get in, We'll figure it out. Yeah, I
- 35:22Speaker 2: want them to get in like like maybe have a
- 35:24Speaker 2: buye like don't have to like we don't have to
- 35:26Speaker 2: like sneak in and play game after game after game,
- 35:29Speaker 2: like give our guys a rest because we are getting older.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I think they're definitely capable of that.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, folks. For we take a break here. Again.

- 36:43Speaker 1: We have from Baseball Prospectus and also the Hitting Season
- 36:47Speaker 1: podcast to get into this Philadelphia Phillies team where they're
- 36:50Speaker 1: at in this season, as we were gonna be looking
- 36:52Speaker 1: towards this postseason. We've got our good friend justin clue, buddy,
- 36:56Speaker 1: how are you my friend?
- 36:58Speaker 3: Always down for a drink at a very responsible time
- 37:00Speaker 3: of day? Yes, which this is? This is uh, this
- 37:03Speaker 3: is where, of course recording it that in the early
- 37:05Speaker 3: evening post work hours. Yes, completely completely normal times.
- 37:11Speaker 1: The sun is shining through the window here, the late morning.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Sun just to the window. But hey, Billy's got you
- 37:20Speaker 3: at a lunch beer kind of mood. Absolutely, it's it's appropriate.
- 37:24Speaker 1: As we are recording this here on Tuesday, August twelfth,
- 37:28Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies are six games up on the New
- 37:31Speaker 1: York Mets. They've won four straight. This will be uploaded
- 37:35Speaker 1: on Thursday, as many of our listeners know, whether it's
- 37:37Speaker 1: on YouTube and whether it's through different audio platforms as well. Justin,
- 37:43Speaker 1: but I wanted to first address something that you know,
- 37:46Speaker 1: it's really as a fan, I am discombobulated, I'm baffled,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I'm it's mind boggling about this particular theme and where
- 37:57Speaker 1: certain sectors and frustrations of parts of this fan base,
- 38:02Speaker 1: this Phillies fan base, have been over this season. I'm
- 38:06Speaker 1: just absolutely astonished that there are Phillies fans who believe
- 38:10Speaker 1: this team doesn't have what it takes to win throughout
- 38:12Speaker 1: the postseason and possibly get to the World Series because
- 38:15Speaker 1: of how one Dave Dombrowski has handled this passed offseason
- 38:20Speaker 1: with acquisitions and made the decision to quote run it
- 38:23Speaker 1: back with much of the same roster as last year.
- 38:26Speaker 1: I again, it's like it bothers me. It really does
- 38:30Speaker 1: certain sectors of this fan base, I know, bothers you,
- 38:32Speaker 1: and you know a lot of other folks out there
- 38:34Speaker 1: who try to be logical Philadelphia Phillies fans. I mean, sure,
- 38:38Speaker 1: the Max Kepler signing wasn't great. You know, we see
- 38:42Speaker 1: where Jeff Hoffman is at right now, a four point
- 38:44Speaker 1: five zero er. A lot of folks mid season here
- 38:48Speaker 1: are saying, hey, we should have kept Jeff Hoffman. Hindsight's
- 38:51Speaker 1: always twenty twenty. Of course, Phillies outfield has certainly struggled
- 38:54Speaker 1: in various ways, Yet Dave Dombrowski he trades for Johan
- 38:58Speaker 1: Duran and I think at some point this fan base
- 39:01Speaker 1: we have to give Dave Dombrowski credit for when he
- 39:04Speaker 1: makes a move that works out, just like we criticize
- 39:07Speaker 1: the moves that don't pan out. So that's a long
- 39:10Speaker 1: Dia trib buddy, because I'm wondering, like, how would you
- 39:14Speaker 1: grade how do you look at how would you grade
- 39:16Speaker 1: Dave Dombrowski and how he's really constructed this roster, given
- 39:20Speaker 1: where this team is at right now, and why would
- 39:24Speaker 1: you give him that grade?
- 39:26Speaker 3: First of all, I'd like to address the previous statement
- 39:30Speaker 3: you made because you have to give him credit or
- 39:33Speaker 3: you have to You don't have to do any of that.
- 39:35Speaker 3: That is true for anybody, Yes, with any manager, with
- 39:38Speaker 3: any GM owner, executive, whatever, you don't have to do that.
- 39:41Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that to argue with you or
- 39:45Speaker 3: refute your point. It's just the general idea that you
- 39:47Speaker 3: don't have to take the full scope of someone's output,
- 39:52Speaker 3: especially like a GM, in order to if you hated
- 39:55Speaker 3: something they did, even though like there's a bunch of
- 39:57Speaker 3: other cool stuff they did, if that was their defining
- 39:59Speaker 3: trade to you, I mean, you know, you might get up,
- 40:01Speaker 3: get in some arguments with some people. But you can
- 40:03Speaker 3: just feel that way. I mean, I know Matt Clintech
- 40:05Speaker 3: has undergone a bit of a uh what's it called,
- 40:09Speaker 3: like a people have rehabilitated his image, Like he oversaw
- 40:13Speaker 3: some Phillies teams that didn't go to the playoffs. So
- 40:15Speaker 3: he gets this bad reputation, but you know, you give
- 40:18Speaker 3: him credit for Zach Wheeler, you give him credit for
- 40:20Speaker 3: some other signings and picking up He was good at
- 40:22Speaker 3: picking up Bat's mid season, something that Dave Debraski hasn't
- 40:25Speaker 3: been as fortunate as that. Does that mean Matt Clintech
- 40:28Speaker 3: is a better GM than Dave Debrowski.
- 40:30Speaker 1: No, it does not.
- 40:31Speaker 3: It does not mean that. So you know, you can
- 40:33Speaker 3: you can look at the good and the bad if
- 40:35Speaker 3: you want to, but you don't have to give people credit.
- 40:37Speaker 3: If for for the good stuff, if you feel like
- 40:39Speaker 3: the worst things they did were more definitive of their
- 40:42Speaker 3: time here and in general, if they made you feel
- 40:44Speaker 3: the strongest way. And that's kind of to bring it
- 40:46Speaker 3: back to Dobrowski. The argument here that Dobrawski is, as
- 40:50Speaker 3: we all know, going to go into the Hall of
- 40:52Speaker 3: Fame someday as an executive. So he's already reached that
- 40:55Speaker 3: tier of a guy who knows how to put together
- 40:57Speaker 3: a championship baseball team, and he came here with that
- 41:00Speaker 3: reputation that he was gonna blow up a farm system
- 41:02Speaker 3: and get you a bunch of talent. There's good parts
- 41:04Speaker 3: to that and there's bad parts to that, and they're
- 41:06Speaker 3: pretty obvious what they are. But the Phillies put him
- 41:08Speaker 3: in an interesting spot because they didn't really have the
- 41:09Speaker 3: farm system to blow up and.
- 41:11Speaker 2: They still don't.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and we saw that at this at this trade deadline,
- 41:15Speaker 3: Dombrawski said, you know, there's there's multiple guys. I believe
- 41:18Speaker 3: he said that that we've told Yeah, I mean, don't
- 41:20Speaker 3: expect to go anywhere. And you got to assume that
- 41:23Speaker 3: that was like Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford, Aiden Millie, like
- 41:26Speaker 3: that level of guy at the very least. And that's
- 41:28Speaker 3: from a farm system that's like mid at best and
- 41:31Speaker 3: has been mid at best for it for a long time.
- 41:33Speaker 3: So what does that leave you to trade? And that's
- 41:35Speaker 3: kind of the hand he had at the at the
- 41:37Speaker 3: trade deadline, where it was like, all right, we have
- 41:39Speaker 3: some prospects teams are gonna want. It's probably enough to
- 41:41Speaker 3: get one of the guys we need, and we need
- 41:43Speaker 3: more than one guy, so it's gonna take some creativity.
- 41:46Speaker 3: So my point is, you trust a guy like Dave Dobrawski,
- 41:49Speaker 3: with the pedigree he's got and the reputation he's got,
- 41:52Speaker 3: to get creative. You trust him to do that, and
- 41:54Speaker 3: you should. That's what he's here to do.
- 41:57Speaker 1: However big.
- 42:01Speaker 3: That creativity is, you know, it can always be a
- 42:03Speaker 3: roll of the dice. It's a gamble, and gambles don't
- 42:06Speaker 3: always pay off. It's what makes them gambles. So that's
- 42:09Speaker 3: what you saw in this last offseason. So it's it's
- 42:13Speaker 3: not so much like I disagree with the with the
- 42:14Speaker 3: acquisitions of guys like Jordan Romano and Max Kepler or
- 42:18Speaker 3: even Hayesu's Lozardo if if you choose to be against that, though,
- 42:22Speaker 3: I guess you really don't have an argument for that
- 42:23Speaker 3: at this point the struggles he has had. The point
- 42:27Speaker 3: is more that you disagree with the approach that the
- 42:30Speaker 3: Phillies took, that they weren't going to do something like
- 42:32Speaker 3: blow up their farm system or sign a bunch of
- 42:35Speaker 3: a big name guys that you know. Dave Dobrawski classic
- 42:38Speaker 3: Dave Dombrowski style. So I guess I my grading of
- 42:42Speaker 3: Dombrowski comes down to that approach, which which I you know,
- 42:48Speaker 3: I want to trust him to do that. But clearly,
- 42:52Speaker 3: if a guy like Dave Dombrowski, with the everything he
- 42:55Speaker 3: has in his past, can come up with, well, Max
- 42:58Speaker 3: Kepler or well and Romano come up with let's let's
- 43:02Speaker 3: let's get guys cheaper who are coming off injuries or
- 43:05Speaker 3: or or are bounce back candidates and see what When
- 43:08Speaker 3: that pays off, you look like a genius. Right, But
- 43:10Speaker 3: if it doesn't, you can you can look any variety
- 43:13Speaker 3: of negative things lazy, cheap, disinterested, uninspired. I mean I
- 43:18Speaker 3: felt that way about the Harrison Bader deal, but that
- 43:20Speaker 3: has really started to feel better as the days have
- 43:23Speaker 3: gone by. That one guy can really impact a whole
- 43:27Speaker 3: section of your team, as we saw with deron the bullpen.
- 43:30Speaker 3: I think Bata is gonna have similar, if not as
- 43:34Speaker 3: to high a level, but similar impact on the outfield
- 43:37Speaker 3: that's been a problem for the Phillies. So all that
- 43:39Speaker 3: to say, in general, I'm given Dave Dombraski a bee because.
- 43:44Speaker 1: I was going to say, yeah, I was gonna say
- 43:46Speaker 1: B plus Yep.
- 43:48Speaker 3: His decisions have not like always paid off, and I
- 43:51Speaker 3: haven't really appreciated the approach that has led to those decisions,
- 43:54Speaker 3: because when you're when you're trying to be creative, you're
- 43:57Speaker 3: playing in a in a pool where the likelihood that's
- 43:59Speaker 3: something like signing Austin Hayes to to boost your offense
- 44:03Speaker 3: is going to pay off. And it could have. It
- 44:05Speaker 3: super could have. But then you know, somebody gets a
- 44:08Speaker 3: kidney infection and they're out for a bunch of times
- 44:10Speaker 3: and I just don't pay off with Meryfield that could
- 44:13Speaker 3: have paid off. There's no reason that that definitely wasn't
- 44:16Speaker 3: going to pay off. Right, It definitely didn't pay off, but.
- 44:20Speaker 1: It definitely could have and it uh.
- 44:22Speaker 3: And that's that's the risk you take versus like signing
- 44:25Speaker 3: Trey Turner, which is like, yeah.
- 44:27Speaker 1: This is like probably gonna pay off, so.
- 44:30Speaker 3: You don't have to worry as much. And so yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 3: I I give I give them a bee because you know,
- 44:36Speaker 3: the approach hasn't always been something I agreed with, but
- 44:39Speaker 3: the results have generally been positive. And I trust him
- 44:42Speaker 3: to continue making those decisions because in some cases, the
- 44:45Speaker 3: Phillies don't have any other choice.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Right, I go to the plus the B plus area
- 44:49Speaker 1: because from a more macro standpoint of this Phillies team now,
- 44:54Speaker 1: and it may it's it's not always going to be
- 44:56Speaker 1: like this, but they are extremely relevant within the National
- 44:59Speaker 1: League and they are going to remain relevant in the
- 45:01Speaker 1: National League. My god, I keep going back to where
- 45:03Speaker 1: this team was ten years ago, for God's sake, and
- 45:06Speaker 1: it was just an abomination. And now this team is relevant. Yes,
- 45:09Speaker 1: they are spending money. They should be spending money on
- 45:12Speaker 1: players like Trey Turner, like Bryce Harper. You know, they're
- 45:15Speaker 1: probably gonna end up paying Kyle Schwarber, and rightfully so,
- 45:19Speaker 1: given this season that he has had. So that's why
- 45:22Speaker 1: I'm bumping it up to the B plus, just because
- 45:25Speaker 1: of the relevance of what this Phillies team is.
- 45:27Speaker 2: If that makes sense.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I think a lot of Dombrowski's tenure is
- 45:31Speaker 3: gonna I've been saying it this whole time. It's not
- 45:34Speaker 3: just about winning the World Series, and with this team
- 45:37Speaker 3: and this group and this window, it's about elevating the
- 45:40Speaker 3: franchise as a whole. So the next time they don't
- 45:43Speaker 3: make the playoffs, it's not part of a twelve year
- 45:45Speaker 3: drought where they don't make the playoffs. It's part of
- 45:47Speaker 3: a maybe two three season hiccup where like, Okay, we're retooling,
- 45:51Speaker 3: we're figuring out what we have, we're making deals, building
- 45:54Speaker 3: around the core that we're trying to develop, and oh
- 45:56Speaker 3: look it's here and we're ready to go back and
- 45:58Speaker 3: we're gonna snag a wild card spot again. So that's
- 46:00Speaker 3: that's also a big part of this Nebraska era that
- 46:03Speaker 3: you know, the future will let us know if that
- 46:05Speaker 3: was successful. But I do think that's a goal of
- 46:07Speaker 3: the Phillies to not be that team anymore that misses
- 46:10Speaker 3: the playoffs for twenty years.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, all right, Well, well, as we're moving along
- 46:14Speaker 1: with the conversation here. Last week on the show, Justin
- 46:17Speaker 1: my co host and I we talked about whether or
- 46:19Speaker 1: not the Phillies bats were heating up a little too
- 46:21Speaker 1: early before the postseason and how that could potentially be
- 46:24Speaker 1: a concern for US fans. You know, then again, this team,
- 46:29Speaker 1: they need to win games. They need to win games,
- 46:31Speaker 1: they need to produce offensively, and there again, like I
- 46:35Speaker 1: mentioned at the top of I mean, they're currently six
- 46:37Speaker 1: games up on the Mets of the NL East at
- 46:39Speaker 1: this point, wins are definitely important here. Do you think
- 46:43Speaker 1: this team and their bats, the offense, do you buy
- 46:46Speaker 1: into that that they're getting hot too early? That the
- 46:49Speaker 1: bats are way too hot right now, and you have
- 46:52Speaker 1: any concern about what we may see in the postseason.
- 46:54Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here? Oh, you're stressed.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Look, I get what you're saying. This team. The biggest
- 47:06Speaker 3: thing you could say about this team, especially the offense,
- 47:09Speaker 3: that it is inconsistent. Yes, and that implies that, yeah,
- 47:12Speaker 3: they look great sometimes and they look terrible sometimes truly
- 47:15Speaker 3: top top of the gay and bottom of the game,
- 47:17Speaker 3: like they will just bottom out and it is just
- 47:19Speaker 3: it is rough. I totally understand what you're saying. It
- 47:22Speaker 3: can feel like a wheel of fortune literally getting just
- 47:25Speaker 3: spun like crazy, and you're just hoping that, like the offense,
- 47:28Speaker 3: it lands on, you know, something positive, and the timing
- 47:32Speaker 3: of that, as we've seen, you know, last year in
- 47:35Speaker 3: the playoffs, year before in the playoffs, that like that,
- 47:37Speaker 3: that positivity can go away at any time, and so
- 47:41Speaker 3: it can become understandable to look at this as though
- 47:45Speaker 3: it's a it's a timing issue, and then certainly that's
- 47:47Speaker 3: a factor. Absolutely, So I'm giving you. I'm giving you
- 47:50Speaker 3: that totally. But I was thinking about this earlier today,
- 47:55Speaker 3: and the truth is, the Phillies haven't playing some really
- 47:59Speaker 3: good good ball lately. They have been playing their most
- 48:02Speaker 3: fun baseball this season. You're getting more from areas that
- 48:06Speaker 3: were weaknesses not very long ago.
- 48:10Speaker 1: In three seventy five.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Since he's been back, gosh, yep, You're getting performances that
- 48:15Speaker 3: you were waiting to get from guys who were able
- 48:17Speaker 3: to do that. You're getting performances from guys that you
- 48:19Speaker 3: were just hoping you would maybe get it from, like
- 48:21Speaker 3: your Weston Wilson's and at Mundo Sosa has been playing
- 48:25Speaker 3: lights out did the defense has been exquisite lately, Bryce
- 48:29Speaker 3: and Scott and at Mundo Sosa I've been making great place. JT.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Realmuto has been gunning down right, and that Texas series,
- 48:34Speaker 3: he gunned down two runners in that three to two
- 48:36Speaker 3: win that would have changed the game if they had
- 48:38Speaker 3: been on base. So that that's my point is that
- 48:43Speaker 3: they're finally playing like the team we wanted them to
- 48:46Speaker 3: play as all season long. As this kind of like
- 48:49Speaker 3: has been up and down, and with this specific Phillies team,
- 48:53Speaker 3: it just feels like every time they're playing, well, someone
- 48:56Speaker 3: steps forward says, well, you know they've been playing five
- 49:00Speaker 3: drew ball for the last three months, Like but how
- 49:03Speaker 3: but how is that possible? They're so good and then
- 49:05Speaker 3: they like start they start sucking again, and you're like ugh,
- 49:09Speaker 3: and they're like, well, did you know that they have
- 49:11Speaker 3: the highest ops since the start of July?
- 49:14Speaker 1: And you're like, but how right, yes, oh you're muted
- 49:19Speaker 1: to the darn mike. You are muted. Let me see
- 49:24Speaker 1: if I can help.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Here we go, all right, slammed my hand down and
- 49:31Speaker 3: my mic fell off and the court came out.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I love the emotion. The emotion is fantastic, sweet love
- 49:37Speaker 1: here the PSD podcast show.
- 49:39Speaker 3: But you're just like, how how is that possible?
- 49:42Speaker 1: That that it's just up and down?
- 49:43Speaker 3: So you're never gonna, I feel like, you're never gonna
- 49:46Speaker 3: have a level of consistency that this, Like stray Turner
- 49:49Speaker 3: said the other day, like, oh, we just got to
- 49:51Speaker 3: get consistent. It was like, all right, Trey, when you
- 49:53Speaker 3: find consistency, you just you just let us know, because
- 49:56Speaker 3: we've been looking forward for like three and a half
- 49:58Speaker 3: years now and it just not there. So my guess
- 50:02Speaker 3: my point is they're finally playing like the team we
- 50:05Speaker 3: wanted them to play as why zero in and say yes,
- 50:10Speaker 3: but is it the right time for that?
- 50:12Speaker 2: Right? It has to be.
- 50:14Speaker 3: It has to be because they're playing that way now.
- 50:17Speaker 3: And yes, I totally understand that, like, oh, early August,
- 50:19Speaker 3: what if they're petering out again right when the playoffs
- 50:23Speaker 3: start up. You just have to hope that either a
- 50:26Speaker 3: they peter out like at the end of August and
- 50:28Speaker 3: then come roaring back in September and hope that the
- 50:30Speaker 3: cycle works like that, or you have to hope. And
- 50:33Speaker 3: I think this is kind of what's been happening, that
- 50:34Speaker 3: this team has been playing the kind of games and
- 50:37Speaker 3: winning the kind of games that make them look more
- 50:40Speaker 3: like a playoff team than they have all the time.
- 50:42Speaker 3: There have been games where they have looked incompetent, silly, tired, disengaged,
- 50:48Speaker 3: ready to just get on a plane and go to
- 50:50Speaker 3: the next series. Plenty of times where they've done that,
- 50:52Speaker 3: and you've just had to be like, all right, like
- 50:53Speaker 3: I get there in first place or contending for first place,
- 50:58Speaker 3: or like some guys are hitting really well and other
- 51:00Speaker 3: guys aren't, or you know, I get it, but like
- 51:02Speaker 3: end of the day, you got it. You got us
- 51:05Speaker 3: just when they're when they're playing, when things are going
- 51:08Speaker 3: as well as they're going. You got to just accept
- 51:10Speaker 3: that and and and know that, yes, finally they are
- 51:13Speaker 3: looking like a team that can win in the playoffs.
- 51:15Speaker 3: To me, I feel like the last three weeks, yes,
- 51:18Speaker 3: pretty much since the trade deadline, since Darron got here,
- 51:21Speaker 3: that you're seeing a team that has done examples of
- 51:25Speaker 3: what the playoffs could look like. That Tigers series, potential
- 51:28Speaker 3: World Series previews. Rangers, they're they're kind of dying out,
- 51:32Speaker 3: but they were really hot going into the All Star break,
- 51:34Speaker 3: and that was a team that you were gonna have
- 51:36Speaker 3: to work to beat too. Clearly, the Phillies had to
- 51:37Speaker 3: work to beat. They didn't blow out the Rangers or
- 51:39Speaker 3: anything or dominate them, and in two of those three wins.
- 51:42Speaker 3: So yeah, I think you're seeing a team that that's
- 51:45Speaker 3: proving we can win close games. We could dance on
- 51:47Speaker 3: that Razor's edge and it's not automatically a disaster because
- 51:50Speaker 3: when he points to the bullpen, it's not some like
- 51:53Speaker 3: noodle armed Jordan Romano coming in or something. It's people.
- 51:56Speaker 3: It's people who have been uh, it's drawn with his job.
- 52:00Speaker 3: It's the guys behind him, who even the ones who
- 52:02Speaker 3: have been struggling, kind of having a better idea of
- 52:04Speaker 3: what their role is. And I think that's having a
- 52:06Speaker 3: positive effect on everybody. So I'm thinking less about the
- 52:10Speaker 3: timing of this success and more about what it says
- 52:13Speaker 3: about this team's capability.
- 52:14Speaker 1: That's fair, that's absolutely fair, And as you, I mean,
- 52:18Speaker 1: it's a good way to dovetail into this next topic
- 52:21Speaker 1: because as we I don't think should have concern necessarily
- 52:26Speaker 1: about Zach Wheeler and the type of picture that he is,
- 52:30Speaker 1: type of picture he has been, the resiliency that he
- 52:33Speaker 1: has shown. We have certainly seen some diminished velocity as
- 52:37Speaker 1: of late this past Sunday, he was able to get
- 52:40Speaker 1: his four seamer to ninety five zero point five miles
- 52:43Speaker 1: per hour, but he's averaged this season ninety six point
- 52:46Speaker 1: two miles an hour, and he recently had an MRI
- 52:50Speaker 1: after some shoulder soreness. Rob Thompson said the MRI came
- 52:53Speaker 1: back clean. But I do wonder, and again, this may
- 52:57Speaker 1: just be the Phillies fan in me constantly questioning things,
- 53:02Speaker 1: constantly overanalyzing things with this team. Again, this is Zach Wheeler,
- 53:06Speaker 1: This is Zach Wheeler and what this guy has been
- 53:09Speaker 1: able to do from the mound for so many years.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I do wonder how much concern you have for Wheeler
- 53:16Speaker 1: as we're in this final stretch of the regular season
- 53:18Speaker 1: looking towards the postseason, in terms of his velocity and
- 53:22Speaker 1: just where he is as he is nursing. Obviously, something here.
- 53:27Speaker 3: I'd like to talk for a minute about North Korea's
- 53:30Speaker 3: nuclear capabilities.
- 53:32Speaker 1: All right, we're going in a different direction real quick here, folks. Okay,
- 53:35Speaker 1: but I know he's gonna dovetail into something.
- 53:39Speaker 3: A couple of years ago, John Oliver was like talking
- 53:42Speaker 3: about that, and the point he was making was like,
- 53:44Speaker 3: if you lived on one hundred and thirty first Street
- 53:47Speaker 3: in New York and you found out that North Korea's
- 53:50Speaker 3: nuclear missiles could reach one hundred and thirtieth Street, you'd
- 53:53Speaker 3: put it completely out of your head because you're like,
- 53:55Speaker 3: all right, well, it's not my problem. And obviously he
- 54:00Speaker 3: was talking about it as not necessarily a good thing
- 54:02Speaker 3: in that realm where you're able to detach yourself from
- 54:05Speaker 3: an issue because it's not impacting you. But in sports,
- 54:09Speaker 3: it's almost a healthier mindset to take where it's like,
- 54:11Speaker 3: all right, does Zack Wheeler look like he's heard? Not
- 54:16Speaker 3: like really, but diminished velocity always sets off a lot
- 54:19Speaker 3: of alarm bells. Did they get him an MRI? Yes,
- 54:21Speaker 3: but it didn't show anything. Is Rob Thompson concerned? Not really,
- 54:25Speaker 3: because they asked him like, how are you going to
- 54:27Speaker 3: do anything else to kind of cushion Zach Wheeler moving forward?
- 54:30Speaker 3: And he said no because he's fine. So my point is,
- 54:33Speaker 3: we're living on one hundred and thirty first Street here,
- 54:36Speaker 3: but in this case, it's a.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Totally healthy thing. Nothing is wrong.
- 54:41Speaker 3: Things are maybe a little different, but as far as
- 54:44Speaker 3: we know, we are out of the blast zone for
- 54:47Speaker 3: a like Zach Wheeler issue, So I'm taking comfort in that.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Will we find out in the option, Yeah, it turns
- 54:52Speaker 3: out his elbow was just like bone dust by the
- 54:56Speaker 3: time like August rolled around, but he was just willing
- 54:59Speaker 3: to pitch through it, right, Yeah, I mean, obviously that's
- 55:01Speaker 3: an ideal. You don't want to hear that. But as
- 55:03Speaker 3: of now, I'm chalking this up and have been to.
- 55:07Speaker 3: These guys have been pitching deeper into games than any
- 55:10Speaker 3: starting rotation in baseball. They've been pitching better than any
- 55:13Speaker 3: starting pitcher. It any starting rotation in baseball, you're gonna
- 55:17Speaker 3: get tired arms, like exactly now, this is this is
- 55:21Speaker 3: when that happens, post all Star Breck mid August. Guys
- 55:25Speaker 3: who've been pitching seven, eight, nine innings all year long
- 55:28Speaker 3: are gonna start to just have some deader arms. And
- 55:31Speaker 3: you know, there's there's ways you can address that. And
- 55:33Speaker 3: I think the Phillies, you know, they know they're pitching.
- 55:36Speaker 3: You know, Caleb Cottam has has everything under control.
- 55:39Speaker 1: There.
- 55:39Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not worried about it. There's a reason
- 55:41Speaker 3: they're starting rotation became this team's clear most immense strength.
- 55:46Speaker 3: And so I I want to see Zach Wheeler pitching
- 55:50Speaker 3: with the dominance that he was pitching earlier in the year.
- 55:52Speaker 3: I want him hitting the velocity that we know he's
- 55:54Speaker 3: capable of hitting. But if he's not doing that, and
- 55:57Speaker 3: but like medical science is telling us, hey, no, it's
- 56:00Speaker 3: nothing wrong, nothing wrong here, then I think you got
- 56:03Speaker 3: to just address that. Like, Zach Wheeler has a human arm,
- 56:06Speaker 3: and it might be you know, a little less capable
- 56:09Speaker 3: right now than it was earlier in the year. And
- 56:12Speaker 3: hopefully they can they can get it back up to
- 56:14Speaker 3: where it was before. But the Phillies can also win
- 56:16Speaker 3: a game where Zach Wheeler allows two or three runs
- 56:19Speaker 3: instead of zero or one they should be and they
- 56:22Speaker 3: can win that game. So he can still give you
- 56:24Speaker 3: a great start even with lessened velocity. It's just going
- 56:28Speaker 3: to be something that freaks people out because when you
- 56:30Speaker 3: get used to like near perfection, anything any flaw looks
- 56:34Speaker 3: like a total red flag. And I don't think it's
- 56:37Speaker 3: necessarily a reason to panic. I won't even qualify it
- 56:40Speaker 3: with necessarily. I don't think it's a reason to panic.
- 56:42Speaker 3: I think the starting pitching is going to remain a
- 56:45Speaker 3: strength of this team, and Zacq Wheeler's going to remain
- 56:47Speaker 3: a part of that strength. It's not something you need
- 56:49Speaker 3: to worry about until the MRI comes back and says, yeah,
- 56:53Speaker 3: just got a bunch of just a bunch of worms,
- 56:55Speaker 3: and there we found out in the garments. It's gross.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, folks. He's just in clue from Baseball Perspectives,
- 57:02Speaker 1: the Hit and Season podcast, and also an expert on
- 57:06Speaker 1: international ballistic missiles, obviously with regard to North Korea. You know,
- 57:11Speaker 1: I think I got just yes, I love it. I
- 57:17Speaker 1: know you're out there on Patreon.
- 57:18Speaker 3: Too, right, Oh yeah, patreon dot com slash Hitting season,
- 57:22Speaker 3: you can listen to The Dirty Inning twice a month,
- 57:24Speaker 3: our show about the dumbest, funniest, and most most obscure
- 57:27Speaker 3: innings in Phillies history, as well as Absolutely Hammered, which
- 57:30Speaker 3: is a weekly Philly's Happy hour with myself, Chris Jones,
- 57:32Speaker 3: and Mike robertson.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Awesome content, folks. And as we're moving along here, want
- 57:37Speaker 1: to get into the bullpen because we've talked about Johan
- 57:39Speaker 1: Duran and what he has meant to the bullpen being
- 57:42Speaker 1: that definitive closer for this team. It's something I absolutely
- 57:46Speaker 1: love to see and many of many of us fans
- 57:49Speaker 1: have just waited such a long time to see this
- 57:51Speaker 1: kind of dominance in the ninth inning. I mean, just
- 57:55Speaker 1: overall thoughts here, justin like, how are you viewing Duran? Hear,
- 58:01Speaker 1: his role, what it means for the postseason here, because
- 58:04Speaker 1: the postseason implications I think are huge with this talent
- 58:07Speaker 1: coming out of the bullpen. What are your thoughts here
- 58:08Speaker 1: with Duran? Yeah, I mean this is a this is a.
- 58:13Speaker 3: Character that a lot of Phillies fans probably potentially have
- 58:17Speaker 3: never seen. Yeah, certainly not in meaningful games. I mean
- 58:20Speaker 3: the mean, you were talking about ten years ago. The
- 58:23Speaker 3: whole rebuilt era obviously had Papal Bond like at the
- 58:26Speaker 3: beginning of that, and I think we all know he
- 58:28Speaker 3: holds most of the top closer stats in Phillies' franchise history,
- 58:32Speaker 3: which by the end of Duran's deal could ideally now
- 58:36Speaker 3: no longer be Papal Bonds in the top spot. But
- 58:41Speaker 3: the role of elite, intense, top of the game closer
- 58:47Speaker 3: has not been filled with the Phillies for quite some time.
- 58:51Speaker 3: You know, obviously your mind goes to Brad Lidge in
- 58:53Speaker 3: two thousand and eight. Not a lot of imperfect seasons
- 58:56Speaker 3: following that, but that was, like one of the main
- 58:59Speaker 3: reasons that team was able to win a World Series
- 59:01Speaker 3: was because they had a closer who couldn't not close
- 59:04Speaker 3: the game out for you, like he he just he
- 59:07Speaker 3: just didn't do that. The only the only safe he
- 59:09Speaker 3: blew all year was in the All Star Game, which
- 59:11Speaker 3: is some level of irony that but I'd give I'd
- 59:15Speaker 3: give that up every time. And then you have Papa
- 59:17Speaker 3: Bond who comes in and just you know, there's no
- 59:19Speaker 3: bigger waste of time than an elite level closer on
- 59:21Speaker 3: a team with no games to close, but you know,
- 59:23Speaker 3: he found a way to accumulate those stats, and you
- 59:25Speaker 3: generally knew that if any of those five hundred or
- 59:28Speaker 3: below five hundred teams were going into the ninth in
- 59:30Speaker 3: a save situation that okay, well they'll probably win this
- 59:33Speaker 3: one because we.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Have done on the bond.
- 59:35Speaker 3: So that is a level of comfort that I had
- 59:39Speaker 3: to relearn how to have that. I didn't have to
- 59:43Speaker 3: become anxious just because the bullpen gate was moving. And
- 59:46Speaker 3: like I said earlier, acquiring a guy like Duran Man
- 59:50Speaker 3: at the time, they're getting him with more years left
- 59:52Speaker 3: on his deal and he's twenty seven years old. I mean,
- 59:54Speaker 3: it's not even like you're the sucker getting a closer
- 59:58Speaker 3: as he like turns thirty two in his arm about
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: to explode because he's been throwing one hundred and ten
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: miles an hour for the last three years. Like they're
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: getting him, right when you want to get a closer
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: like that, so much value and the way that that
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: relaxes or takes the pressure off at least other members
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: of the bullpen who are more suited for other roles,
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: that's such a benefit that makes it so. I was
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: somebody who was disappointed at first when they announced, Okay,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: we're addressing the outfield with Harrison Vader, and my exact
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: thoughts were, if that's all you were going to do
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: for the outfield, I'd rather you just acquired the Harrison
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Vader equivalent for the bullpen as in addition to drum,
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: just to give yourself more options, more weapons out there.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Because forty year old David Robertson, whatever, Jose Alvarado, what
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: are his motivations going to be coming back? But now
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: some of those questions are kind of answered, and the
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: Phillies Rob Thompson, we're a little more open about what
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: people's jobs were going to be moving forward because guess what,
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: there's a closer, and there's no question that he's a closer.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: He is the closer I'd like to in the bullpen.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: I just do. He can throw a hundred three miles
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: an hour. You can get three hitters out. That's all
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: you're asking him to do, and that's it great that
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: he has a job. That means everybody else kind of
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: gets a job too. And Thompson was like, yeah, for
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: those late innings, those setup roles, we're gonna be looking
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: at Alvarado we're gonna be looking at Strom, We're gonna
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: be looking at Kirkhaan. Then he described David Robertson as
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: like a middle relief guy, and I was like, you
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: know what, that's great, that's great. I mean, you know,
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: it's David Robertson whatever, but like that you're sitting here
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: saying that and not that, like, yeah, we're gonna give
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Robertson some chances and he's gonna like get some high leverages.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I don't want that, you know, I don't want that.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: And I'm glad he was able to say, like, yeah,
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: and so he's gonna be doing middle relief if we
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: need a righty. Tanner Banks will be doing middle relief
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: if we need a lefty. And he was just laying
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: it out like this is this is the plan moving forward.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: And I think those guys really benefit from that as well.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: So you have a much better idea of moving forward
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: to what the bullpen's gonna look like, and that that
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: makes them all the better. So they didn't have to
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: go get some other mid range reliever just to spice
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: things up, because they got the guy that kind of
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: shuffled the bullpen back into him more productive space.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, Well, buddy, before I let you go, one
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: final topic as we're closing out this podcast episode this week,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: I'm wondering what you think the biggest challenge is going
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: to be for this Phillies team as we're starting to
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: wrap up the regular season, as this team is possibly
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: going to be hopefully I should say, getting to the NLCS,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: maybe the World Series. There's a lot of high hopes
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: out there for that. What do you think the biggest
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: challenge is going to be for this team towards the
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: end of the season heading into the postseason Here.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: The biggest challenge for the Phillies in twenty twenty five
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: is going to be me. I will be hiding in
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: closets and high shelves and jumping down and startling them
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: to keep them on their toes in the home stretch.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Fantastic.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: I have a large, lanky body. It's going to be
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: difficult to fit myself into some of these crevices, but
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: I will be making sure they are always ready for
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: an ambush at all times.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Are all are you going to be dressed up as anything?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Or are we just are they just going to know
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: it's just and clue right in front of.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: Them sometimes I'm just wearing the fanatic heads. Sometimes I'm
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: just wearing the fanatic body with the head You're never
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: gonna know what's what's about to come around the corner.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: I think, I think the answer to your question. Now,
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: you know, here we are in year four of this
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: core group of what is presumed and in all likelihood
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: going to be the fourth straight Playoff appearance. And you know,
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: I don't need to lay this out for everybody year one,
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: but I will Year one. You know, they go to
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: the World Series and lose, and you're just like, okay,
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: well this was not maybe not a surprise, but like
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: their success that going that far was kind of like
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: this abrupt thrill. So you get a lot of goodwill
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: from that, and the assumption is, okay, well you got
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: all the way there last year, you can do it again.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Obviously they failed to do that.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: That doesn't mean that those teams were worse or they
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: got worse. It just means you still have something to prove.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: And as the years have gone by, there's just one
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: thing left for this team to prove, which is of course,
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: to win the World Series, and they are looking like
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: a team more recently that can do that. And so
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: I'm kind of not looking at specific aspects of the
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: team like offense, starting pitching, bullpen anymore, because, like I said,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: I think the bullpen's in the best spot it's been
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: all year long and twenty twenty five. Starting rotation has
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: never been a huge concern. Even though they've had some
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: bumps and bruises and hiccups and issues along the way,
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: they've still remained the best set of pitchers that you're
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: gonna put out there. And I honestly, I am willing
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: to say that a fully rested and full healthy Araon
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: Nola could be a really big benefit to this team
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: moving forward.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: So I'm not worried about that.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: And the offense has shown that also. They know how
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: to hit, they know how to score more than one
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: inning per game. They've got a couple of really hot hitters,
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: they have other hitters who have been hot at other
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: points during the season and can get hot again. They've
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: got productive hitters from productive performances from guys like Weston Wilson,
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: so they know how to they can get the offense
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: they need. That's not a super concern either, not like
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: the Rangers who are so defensively and pitching strong, but
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: just are not getting any offense from anyone in particular,
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: and it's really costing them everything. The Phillies don't have
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: like a big issue like that anymore, I think since
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: the trade deadline and what they were able to acquire.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: So what Philly's biggest challenge is going into September and
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: October is going to be the past? Like that's the
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: recent past. They need to get over the fact that, Yeah,
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: I mean they didn't do it in twenty two. They
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: shot themselves in the leg in twenty three, and then
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: they went in with absolutely no juice in twenty four.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: They got to find whatever it is that makes them
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: a playoff team going into the playoffs and be that team.
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: I know that that sounds like broad and kind of crazy,
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: but I feel like they would probably tell you the
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: same thing, Like, at this point, you know, Dombrowski's done
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: what he's gonna do. The guys who are gonna do
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: what's going to happen are here. Yes, you're a bunch
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: of really good players, in some cases some of the
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: best in the league. I say this every time time
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: they play a completely beatable team like the Rockies or
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: the Orioles. There's no reason for this team to lose
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: any of these games like there will. There will and
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: could be reasons for sure, because baseball is crazy and
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: just a giant mess sometimes and you can't plan for everything,
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: and you certainly can't control everything. But the Phillies are
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: set up to do the one thing they haven't done
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: for the last three years and have been totally capable
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: of doing in each three attempts. It's just getting over
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: that reputation that, you know, mental hurdle of Okay, here

- 1:06:43Speaker 3: getting back to the save point that we were at
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: and move forward there. That's all people are waiting to see.

- 1:06:53Speaker 3: that is is this team's biggest challenge, because I don't
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: I don't. I don't think any particular facet of this
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: team is guaranteed to be its undoing in the weeks ahead.
