- 0:00Speaker 1: But we're glad to be with you here on a
- 0:01Speaker 1: Wednesday afternoon. Yeah, good afternoon. Welcome to the program here
- 0:05Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. My name is Craig Wait.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Thanks very much for joining us. We of course includes
- 0:09Speaker 1: the producer of the program.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Cameron D. Parker.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The D and the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as in,
- 0:15Speaker 1: it's really cold in Dallas right now, really cold in Dallas.
- 0:20Speaker 1: My brother lives in Fort Worth and it was like
- 0:22Speaker 1: down to eleven degrees and.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Minus two chill factor and stuff like that.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's not exactly you know, swim meet weather conditions.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Here in the Greater Austin there is thirty one.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Degrees right now, and the high is supposed to come
- 0:38Speaker 1: a little later this afternoon, all the way up to
- 0:41Speaker 1: a ball me thirty two, right at the freezing mark,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and then it's going to get cold again. So where
- 0:45Speaker 1: do you stand with really cold weather?
- 0:48Speaker 3: It's a good question, Greg, you know, growing up at
- 0:51Speaker 3: North Carolina, like you know, we would have thirty degree
- 0:54Speaker 3: yeah days like this before. But I've been here for
- 0:57Speaker 3: eight years now, so my body has acclimated to the
- 1:00Speaker 3: warm Texas winters. But it's like, you know, I tell myself. Hey,
- 1:04Speaker 3: in one week, it'll be seventy degrees eighty degrees, so
- 1:08Speaker 3: you can muster two or three days of thirty three weather.
- 1:12Speaker 2: You know, come on, it didn't do it now.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It's when it gets down into the teens and stuff
- 1:16Speaker 1: like that. Yeah, it starts to get really uncomfortable.
- 1:20Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I let my my.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Dog out, and Linda let the dog out this morning,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and she's turning around and looking at Linda like, you
- 1:30Speaker 1: really expect me to go out here over where you
- 1:33Speaker 1: point to in the area and go do number two
- 1:35Speaker 1: in this in this weather, that's what you're wanting.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But she did.
- 1:38Speaker 1: She's a good dog and she she complied. But it's
- 1:42Speaker 1: it's uh, it's yeah, it's pretty chilly. To give us
- 1:46Speaker 1: warmer thoughts, and I look ahead to uh of things
- 1:53Speaker 1: of warmer weather.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I have for you the updated Here's where major League
- 2:02Speaker 1: Baseball teams are coming out of the off season. Where
- 2:05Speaker 1: they are now that all spring training camps are open.
- 2:09Speaker 1: The ranking of where they are some of them may
- 2:12Speaker 1: surprise you, including you Texas Rangers fans, Cameron. So I'll
- 2:18Speaker 1: tell you that that'll be coming up a next segment.
- 2:20Speaker 1: College basketball, there was a more interesting action last night.
- 2:25Speaker 1: What in the world is happening to the Kansas Jayhawks
- 2:29Speaker 1: that tied for the worst loss in the Bill self Era.
- 2:32Speaker 1: What they lose about thirty four to BYU like ninety
- 2:35Speaker 1: one to fifty seven, and then we're ranked twenty third
- 2:39Speaker 1: going into it. They've kind of been in a free fall.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Kansas this year is an example. I know people point
- 2:46Speaker 1: to programs. They even pointed to Texas when the long
- 2:48Speaker 1: runs were struggling and said, well, the portal things didn't work,
- 2:53Speaker 1: The portal things didn't work. Well. The portal things are
- 2:56Speaker 1: an incomplete grade right now for Texas because the guys
- 2:58Speaker 1: have been injured. And if you want to say, well
- 3:01Speaker 1: that that means that it didn't work, then if the
- 3:03Speaker 1: guys have been injured, I don't I don't know how
- 3:05Speaker 1: you can equate that with the injury. But fortunately one
- 3:07Speaker 1: of the portal guys, Tromon Mark, is back healthy UH
- 3:11Speaker 1: and UH, and then Jason Kent came back after his
- 3:14Speaker 1: wrist injury early, so that's helping UH clearly.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And UH.
- 3:21Speaker 1: They're getting better and they're getting healthier, and they may
- 3:24Speaker 1: they may have an opportunity to get Kenda Weaver back
- 3:27Speaker 1: if not by this weekend, maybe next week sometime, there's
- 3:30Speaker 1: the hope to have him back as well.
- 3:32Speaker 2: So, uh, that part is healthy.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But like for Kansas with the portal signings have brought in,
- 3:38Speaker 1: it's not it hasn't been working out. And I thought
- 3:41Speaker 1: Seth Greenberg of ESPN had a really good take on it.
- 3:43Speaker 1: He said, you know, in today's age and time with
- 3:48Speaker 1: college basketball and and portal activity, it's almost like NBA
- 3:54Speaker 1: free agency in that you sign someone and there's of
- 3:58Speaker 1: course in the NBA there's millions committed in this case,
- 4:01Speaker 1: but you sign someone in the hopes that they'll contribute
- 4:05Speaker 1: in all this, but you really don't know because it's
- 4:08Speaker 1: in a compressed amount of time, and it's even more
- 4:10Speaker 1: of a compressed amount of time with regard to the
- 4:13Speaker 1: portal and college basketball. You've got to move quicker, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: you've got to make a call.
- 4:16Speaker 2: On whether that guy's going to help you.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Otherwise you may lose out on that specific player, but
- 4:21Speaker 1: you may also jump the gun and get somebody thinking
- 4:24Speaker 1: we got to have that guy, and it might not
- 4:26Speaker 1: have been the guy that could best help your program.
- 4:28Speaker 3: And that's kind of what Kansas is going through right now.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So there's that and some of the veterans, including kJ Adams,
- 4:34Speaker 1: they're not playing their best right now.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's the margin of error for for missing
- 4:39Speaker 3: guys in the portal. It's huge, Craig. I mean, we
- 4:41Speaker 3: talked about it. We know about this, you know, the
- 4:42Speaker 3: NCAA tournament when we're in Charlotte. You know, guys are
- 4:45Speaker 3: already going on visits during the first second round the tournament.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The schools you may have you know, missed a tournament,
- 4:49Speaker 3: right so there's an advantage there. And of course it's
- 4:51Speaker 3: all about the NIL budget, and some schools have higher budgets.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Kansas has a pretty high NIL budget. But when you
- 4:57Speaker 3: bring in you know, four or five six new guys
- 5:00Speaker 3: to a roster, you cannot anticipate how they are going
- 5:03Speaker 3: to gael. You do not know how the chemistry are
- 5:05Speaker 3: gonna work out. You know, you can have an idea, well,
- 5:07Speaker 3: you know, if we play this guy with this guy
- 5:09Speaker 3: to do this, this and this, but you don't really
- 5:11Speaker 3: know until they're on the court and we're seeing it.
- 5:13Speaker 3: You know, not work in favor for Kansas, for Texas. Yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 3: they you know, they brought seven new guys to the roster.
- 5:20Speaker 3: They hadn't been healthy. That's the portal in freshman. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and freshman and of course the freshmen have played a
- 5:25Speaker 3: huge part of this team. Tray Johnson, obviously, you don't
- 5:27Speaker 3: know how they're gonna mash pand you don't know, you
- 5:29Speaker 3: do not know when they don't play together, and that's
- 5:31Speaker 3: been the case for Texas. You know, it's been one
- 5:33Speaker 3: step four, two steps back, you know, you know, Kenna
- 5:36Speaker 3: Weaver gets injured, Kluma gets injured, Prior gets injured, you
- 5:38Speaker 3: get Prior back, you're still without Weaver. Tramond's missed some time.
- 5:42Speaker 3: You know, Trey's missed some time. Jason Kent I missed
- 5:45Speaker 3: a lot of time with that wrist injury. So if
- 5:47Speaker 3: Texas can, you know, kind of get those guys together
- 5:49Speaker 3: and healthy and finish this closing stretch, I want to
- 5:51Speaker 3: see how they look down these last five games, because
- 5:53Speaker 3: if they can finally get healthy, get Prior, Kaluma and
- 5:55Speaker 3: we were all back on the floor together, this could
- 5:58Speaker 3: be possibly a pretty dangerous team by we don't know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: because they've not been able to stay healthy. And for Kansas,
- 6:03Speaker 3: I think they've been pretty healthy. I know Adams has
- 6:05Speaker 3: missed some time, and I think Dickinson has been a
- 6:07Speaker 3: big part of the team but just has not shelled.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Has not worked out yep, And that's why the open
- 6:14Speaker 1: date in the middle of this week helps. Now, having
- 6:19Speaker 1: said that, when the Long Wrorns go to Columbia, they're
- 6:21Speaker 1: going to play a South Carolina team, the only team
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the SEC without a conference win. They're really getting
- 6:25Speaker 1: desperate straits right now. I think they're owing eleven in
- 6:27Speaker 1: conference play something like that, got beat by LSU, and
- 6:32Speaker 1: look at LSU all of a sudden perking up winning
- 6:35Speaker 1: in Norman and then going back home and beating South Carolina.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But it'll be kind of a desperate team, and the
- 6:43Speaker 1: Longhorns know they really need a win. Just as a
- 6:48Speaker 1: good win like Kentucky beating Kentucky last Saturday, a bad
- 6:54Speaker 1: loss can damage it. And that would be a bad
- 6:56Speaker 1: loss if they were to lose, wouldn't be crippling or
- 6:59Speaker 1: eliminating or anything like that. But it doesn't help, that's
- 7:02Speaker 1: for sure. You know Joe Lenardi who was working file
- 7:06Speaker 1: obviously on ESPN, they're resident bracketologists. The guy who kind
- 7:10Speaker 1: of invented it had told I guess it was Carl
- 7:15Speaker 1: Raviitch and Jimmy dikes that an Oklahoma loss at Florida
- 7:18Speaker 1: wouldn't necessarily hurt the Sooners, but they got blown out
- 7:21Speaker 1: of the building.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It certainly didn't help, and Oklahoma was running out.
- 7:24Speaker 1: They're three and eleven now in the SEC, so they're
- 7:27Speaker 1: kind of running out of time.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Toda.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Of course, they conclude the regular season here in Austin
- 7:32Speaker 1: and that could be a key game for Texas just
- 7:35Speaker 1: but they all are really for the long Corns. Cam
- 7:39Speaker 1: mentioned Trey Johnson want a job. He's done freshman fabulous,
- 7:44Speaker 1: current SEC Freshman of the Week four time this season.
- 7:48Speaker 1: He's won the honor. It's almost a given for sure
- 7:51Speaker 1: that he's going to wind up being a freshman All American.
- 7:57Speaker 1: He's also going to be our guest tomorrow night. Nice
- 7:59Speaker 1: long worn weekly out of Pluckers. So if you want
- 8:03Speaker 1: to come on out for the show tomorrow night, it
- 8:05Speaker 1: really would be a good time because they're not coming
- 8:08Speaker 1: off and win.
- 8:09Speaker 3: They're a little more arrested.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They've been able to get some work in and of
- 8:13Speaker 1: course and Rodney's voice might be actually even better too.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It was pretty good. It wasn't bad for a post
- 8:19Speaker 1: game on Saturday night, and his zoom yesterday, and there's
- 8:24Speaker 1: a few comments left from that zoom that I purposely
- 8:27Speaker 1: say for today, especially with regards to Kevin Durant. So
- 8:31Speaker 1: we're gonna hear that coming up. But anyway, Trey Johnson's
- 8:36Speaker 1: gonna be with us tomorrow night at Pluckers. So when
- 8:39Speaker 1: we bring in Longhorn Weekly with Rodney Terry at six
- 8:41Speaker 1: o'clock the West Campus location twenty two to twenty two
- 8:45Speaker 1: Rio Grand, we suggested to get out there early, get
- 8:47Speaker 1: self a table and some great basketball conversation with the
- 8:51Speaker 1: long Run's outstanding freshman Trey Johnson. That'll be tomorrow night
- 8:54Speaker 1: at plucker So we have all that to look forward to. Also,
- 8:58Speaker 1: we have inconceivable this hour coming up, and we've got
- 9:04Speaker 1: some other thing too in addition to because we live
- 9:07Speaker 1: in a world of rankings and numbers, numbers and rankings,
- 9:09Speaker 1: all this kind of stuff. I have an older brother.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I have three brothers, one younger, two older. Two of
- 9:17Speaker 1: the brothers, the oldest one and the younger one, both
- 9:19Speaker 1: live in North Carolina. Well, the oldest one lives in
- 9:22Speaker 1: South Carolina, just across the state line. He lives in
- 9:23Speaker 1: North Carntle Beach. The younger brother is retired military and
- 9:27Speaker 1: lives near newburn Out.
- 9:28Speaker 2: In eastern North Carolina.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The second oldest brother is in Fort Worth, and he
- 9:34Speaker 1: is the resident college and pro basketball, especially college basketball,
- 9:39Speaker 1: honk that and NASCAR. He he's just he's just to
- 9:42Speaker 1: eat up with it, you know. So he's all into them.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Was he blowing your phone up on the five hundred?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh yeah, they do that all the time.
- 9:48Speaker 1: He's in the drag racing to the NHR stuff. And
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm either, but I'm included on the group text. He
- 9:55Speaker 1: and my younger brother who's into it. My younger brother,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the retired military he and is, why go to drag
- 10:01Speaker 1: drag races? So they go and they see some of
- 10:03Speaker 1: those some of the NHR nationals and things like that.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So so yeah, I get lumped in on the group
- 10:08Speaker 1: text on that. So anyway, he was, he was all inside,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but he says, he says I was as a kid because.
- 10:17Speaker 2: They didn't diagnose these things in your kid.
- 10:19Speaker 1: He goes, I had to have been adhd pieces because
- 10:22Speaker 1: I make lists all the time. He ranks his his
- 10:26Speaker 1: favorite uniforms, his favorite teams, his least favorite teams, and
- 10:31Speaker 1: in virtually all sports and so with him and mind
- 10:36Speaker 1: I have a couple of ranking lists. One was the
- 10:38Speaker 1: Baseball one to mention. The other is the Billis Index,
- 10:41Speaker 1: which has come out now. That's different from bracketology. It's
- 10:44Speaker 1: different from you know, uh.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, uh. He did it last year.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I think last year was his first time where he
- 10:53Speaker 1: does this in the updates that as we get close
- 10:55Speaker 1: to tournament.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Right now, he ranks not all of the.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Teams in college basketball, but he does rank sixty eight.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That's the magic number.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And we'll tell you where the Long Worn's following that
- 11:05Speaker 1: because they do follow in that ranking order on that.
- 11:06Speaker 1: So we'll get to all of that. As always, we
- 11:09Speaker 1: offer up the text line to you. If you have
- 11:12Speaker 1: a question or a comment you know about you know, Long,
- 11:17Speaker 1: Orange Sports, or whatever is on your mind, feel free
- 11:19Speaker 1: to Texas. You have only to text the word Texas
- 11:23Speaker 1: follow by your question or comment to eight one five
- 11:26Speaker 1: three zero. So you text the word Texas follow by
- 11:28Speaker 1: your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. And we've got
- 11:34Speaker 1: some other topics we'll get to as well as we
- 11:35Speaker 1: continue here on a chilly Wednesday afternoon, I'm thirteen under
- 11:41Speaker 1: the zone. Major League baseball teams are in spring training now,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and we're not that far away. In fact, I think
- 11:49Speaker 1: it's March twenty second is when the Cubs and Dodgers
- 11:52Speaker 1: open in Japan. I think is the regular season openers.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yesterday I had the story. I had the story yesterday
- 11:58Speaker 1: cam that Joe Buck he's going to call a game
- 12:01Speaker 1: on opening day Major League Baseball for ESPN. He's gonna
- 12:03Speaker 1: work Yankees Brewers in New York. And he was very
- 12:06Speaker 1: very quick to say it's one off. It's one off. Yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 1: they asked me to help. I said, absolutely, glad to
- 12:13Speaker 1: do it, but it's a one off. He said, he's
- 12:16Speaker 1: not getting back into the rotation to doing baseball.
- 12:18Speaker 3: They're going to try and get him to do more
- 12:20Speaker 3: games and next sure they know he's going to be
- 12:21Speaker 3: hosting Get Up with Mike Greenberg.
- 12:24Speaker 2: That it'll eventually get to that.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I mean painting him a lot of money eighteen million
- 12:28Speaker 1: a year to do Monday Night football. So anyway, somebody
- 12:31Speaker 1: on the text line yesterday said, well, he's got to
- 12:32Speaker 1: find another way to make some more millions.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I guess so.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I think he asked for an extra mill to do
- 12:37Speaker 3: that game.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Maybe nineteen I'll do it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, So we're just around the corner from the start
- 12:45Speaker 1: of the baseball season, and ESPN's staff have the projections
- 12:54Speaker 1: and rankings of all thirty major league teams coming out
- 12:57Speaker 1: of free agency, and now that they're all in.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Spring training where they ranked him.
- 13:01Speaker 1: So I'm going to go from the bottom of the
- 13:02Speaker 1: top and just tell you a line or two about
- 13:04Speaker 1: each number. Thirty is still our fringing Watson's team that
- 13:06Speaker 1: he just arrived on the scene last year. Try to
- 13:08Speaker 1: rebuild a Chicago White Sox. You know, last year they
- 13:12Speaker 1: set a record for losses. Their reality is that their
- 13:16Speaker 1: expectation is fewer losses, and the reality is the.
- 13:20Speaker 2: White Sox will lose fewer games.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So by that low bar, the season is sure to
- 13:23Speaker 1: be a success. They're nowhere near turning this thing back
- 13:26Speaker 1: in the right direction. But they got him at thirty.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Twenty nine Colorado Rockies expectation and another lovely summer in
- 13:35Speaker 1: Lodo with plenty of runs on the.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Scoreboard, wins not so much. So there's that all right.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Twenty eight Miami, twenty seven Washington the expectation. Noticeable improvement
- 13:49Speaker 1: for a team that, when you think about it, has
- 13:51Speaker 1: now been rebuilding for a long time.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Number twenty six.
- 13:56Speaker 1: The Pirates expectation, great pitching, lackluster hitting, massive fan fresh.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So the reality, they say, why Pirates?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Why Paul freaking scheme centers his first full MLB season
- 14:08Speaker 1: with new pitches and the same old stuff heading up
- 14:11Speaker 1: a rotation that a year from now might be.
- 14:13Speaker 2: The best in the game.
- 14:14Speaker 1: But such windows when opened by a sudden outburst of
- 14:17Speaker 1: pitching or fleeting with this staff in this National League
- 14:20Speaker 1: Central and a throwback payroll outlook, this was the time
- 14:23Speaker 1: to spend spen spent, but the Pirates didn't, didn't didn't.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Instead they traded for Spencer Horowitz, who's already hurt. So
- 14:29Speaker 1: it goes number twenty five.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I love this.
- 14:33Speaker 1: The Athletics and what they call them are the taff
- 14:37Speaker 1: capo Athletics taf kap ko, the tafft capo Athletics. You
- 14:42Speaker 1: know how they call them the teff here taff Cappo
- 14:45Speaker 1: stands for the artist formerly known as Philadelphia, Kansas City
- 14:49Speaker 1: and open expectation. Everyone will refer to them as sack Town,
- 14:54Speaker 1: whether they want it or not. That's what happens to
- 14:57Speaker 1: team in Sacramento.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Just go with it.
- 14:59Speaker 1: The team should be too. That's the expectation, the reality.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's never ideal when the big league team lands in
- 15:05Speaker 1: a minor league park. In this season, We've got two
- 15:07Speaker 1: of them because remember the race. You're gonna have to
- 15:09Speaker 1: play in the Yankees minor league park after the hurricane ripped
- 15:13Speaker 1: up Tropic Canna Field, says. Yet there is something intriguing
- 15:16Speaker 1: about it, a possible call back to simpler days of yours,
- 15:18Speaker 1: something along those lines.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Number twenty four of the Angels expectation, everyone good will
- 15:25Speaker 1: get hurt. Hey, optimism is fertilizer for the weeds of disappointment.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You set your sights low, and everything else feels like
- 15:31Speaker 1: good news. Number twenty three the Reds expectation for better
- 15:37Speaker 1: or worse. There's a little reason to expect anything but
- 15:39Speaker 1: the same old, same old for the Reds. But that's expectation,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and with some of the game's most exciting young players,
- 15:44Speaker 1: the Reds can at least pair that expectation with a
- 15:46Speaker 1: good dose of hope. Number twenty two the Guardians. I mean,
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's quite a drop off given what they did. Expectation
- 15:53Speaker 1: a division title repeat and more, and why not despite
- 15:57Speaker 1: having one of the game's youngest rosters Cleveland one night
- 16:00Speaker 1: games and came within three wins of a World Series birth.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Who cares what the projections say, Well, the reality is
- 16:06Speaker 1: he says that every years we pieced together win projections
- 16:10Speaker 1: with the ever evolving team forecast model, there's at least
- 16:13Speaker 1: one product of the work that leaves you field with
- 16:17Speaker 1: an existential doubt. This year's winner is this one. Number
- 16:21Speaker 1: twenty one is the Giants expectation. A lovely view of
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Bay beyond the right field fence of Oracle Park.
- 16:27Speaker 1: As for baseball, another summer in the middle, looking longingly
- 16:29Speaker 1: at the Dodgers padres and diamondback seems about right. Number
- 16:33Speaker 1: twenty the Brewers, and again this is another team that
- 16:37Speaker 1: won a division. Said, at least from the outside, it
- 16:40Speaker 1: seems as if a step back is the expectation. The
- 16:43Speaker 1: Brewers over under eighty two and a half wins reflects
- 16:45Speaker 1: that sense perfectly. At the same time, if you think
- 16:48Speaker 1: a forecast is destiny for this organization, you haven't been
- 16:51Speaker 1: paying attention to the past nine years of National League Baseball.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Number nineteen Tampa Bay expectation and it's interesting summer in
- 16:59Speaker 1: the so in rain. What that translates to and the
- 17:02Speaker 1: competitive landscape remains to be seen because of the summer.
- 17:06Speaker 1: It says, the reality is the never ending Ray's Stadium
- 17:09Speaker 1: saga had a few twists and turns over the off season.
- 17:12Speaker 1: After years of this, we still don't know where this
- 17:14Speaker 1: meandering path is headed, but we do know that during
- 17:18Speaker 1: the summer twenty five it will pause in Tampa's Steinbrenner Field.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Number eighteen The Cardinals expectation. Have you heard? The Cardinals
- 17:28Speaker 1: planned to trade Nolan Aeronado, who's ongoing president Saint Louis
- 17:32Speaker 1: seems to loom high above the arts like a great
- 17:34Speaker 1: shadow since John Moseley Act won't stop talking about the
- 17:38Speaker 1: need to deal them. So we can suppose the Cardinals
- 17:41Speaker 1: with trade Aeronata and lead into a kind blue lead rebuild.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Number seventeen Toronto, Number sixteen Detroit says the tide will
- 17:53Speaker 1: keep rising, even if it hasn't come in yet. Sure,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the Tigers went on this during late season run and
- 17:58Speaker 1: found themselves in the alds after this, batching with the
- 18:00Speaker 1: Astros in a wild card series. That unexpected run was
- 18:04Speaker 1: a glimpse of where this group might be headed, but
- 18:06Speaker 1: it wasn't necessarily a reflection of where it is right now.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Number fifteen the Red Sox expectation return of October baseball
- 18:14Speaker 1: finway after three seasons of treading water, so they're projecting
- 18:20Speaker 1: a win average of eighty four. Fourteen San Diego expectation.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Anything could happen. We hate to be so imprecise, but
- 18:28Speaker 1: after an offseason in which most of the focus in
- 18:30Speaker 1: San Diego was on changing ownership, it's still not clear
- 18:33Speaker 1: just where this is all headed.
- 18:34Speaker 2: For the Padres.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Number thirteen The Royals expectation take the next step this year.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Last year, at the same time, the next step would
- 18:42Speaker 1: have been defined as losing fewer than one hundred games.
- 18:44Speaker 1: After stunning breakout twenty twenty four of the bar has
- 18:46Speaker 1: been sent much higher. Kansas City Number twelve. Seattle expectation
- 18:50Speaker 1: that the Mariners will pitch their wan in contention, but
- 18:52Speaker 1: in the end it won't lead to much. It never does.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Number eleven. Have you know saying go to the Rangershow yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I know, I'm kind of yeah. Number eleven the Twins.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Number ten, Now we're into the top ten. The Cubs
- 19:08Speaker 1: expectation win the division without committing long term payroll.
- 19:12Speaker 3: They said that last part feels just about right.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Number nine Diamondbacks expectation beat the Dodgers.
- 19:19Speaker 2: It says, Okay, we're just channeling what we know.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Hardcore Arizona fans are thinking, realistically, that can't be the expectation.
- 19:26Speaker 1: But Arizona is better than it was last year, and
- 19:28Speaker 1: better than it was in twenty twenty three when it
- 19:29Speaker 1: won the nationally pennant. Number eight Baltimore young stars lead
- 19:34Speaker 1: the way as the expectation the kind of number seven
- 19:37Speaker 1: the Texas Rangers.
- 19:38Speaker 2: How about that?
- 19:39Speaker 1: A number seven ranking expectation, big bounce back reality After
- 19:45Speaker 1: winning it all on twenty twenty three, The Rangers entered
- 19:47Speaker 1: last season with a Hall of Fame injured list, at
- 19:49Speaker 1: least on the pitching side, and the health outlook never
- 19:51Speaker 1: really got better. The lineup progressed in the wrong way,
- 19:55Speaker 1: and the result was a season that began with a
- 19:57Speaker 1: ring ceremony and with a sub five hundred and third
- 19:59Speaker 1: place fin With Texas just behind Houston and this pecking
- 20:02Speaker 1: order a rounding error from division favorite status, things are
- 20:06Speaker 1: looking up. The Rangers need Jacob de grind to hold up,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Kumar Rocker and Jack light Up Lighter to develop, and
- 20:12Speaker 1: more than anything, to figure out a bullpen mix. With
- 20:15Speaker 1: a lot of possibilities and few clear cut roles. You
- 20:19Speaker 1: agree with below that I do.
- 20:20Speaker 3: There's no way they can be as injured as they
- 20:23Speaker 3: were last season. It's just physically impossible that everyone gets
- 20:26Speaker 3: injured so they can stay healthy. Greg, I think they're
- 20:29Speaker 3: a playoff team.
- 20:29Speaker 1: The win projection for them is that eighty seven point
- 20:33Speaker 1: seven wins and a sixty four percentage chance to make
- 20:38Speaker 1: the postseason. Number six the Astros expectations stay in the mix.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Astros have been a yearly contended for a decade, and
- 20:45Speaker 1: the numbers add up to another run at the American
- 20:47Speaker 1: League flag, though Houston will have plenty of company in
- 20:51Speaker 1: that chase. Reality, the Astros over under at ESPN BET
- 20:56Speaker 1: is at eighty six point five, so you could argue
- 20:58Speaker 1: that this projection has been optimistic. They're win average projected
- 21:01Speaker 1: as eighty eight. Even so, Houston's baseline entering a season
- 21:06Speaker 1: hasn't been this low in ten years. You lose Alex Bregman,
- 21:09Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker, and Justin Verlander from the roster, and the
- 21:11Speaker 1: forecasting machinery isn't.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Going to like it.
- 21:14Speaker 1: They also have the lowest ranked farm system in all
- 21:17Speaker 1: of baseball. They said that isn't going to help Number
- 21:21Speaker 1: five Phillies expectation win now, win big. This wasn't an
- 21:26Speaker 1: aggressive winner for the Phillies, but this remains a top
- 21:28Speaker 1: heavy star Laydon roster that's just starting to look at
- 21:31Speaker 1: long on the two. Number four the Mets when average
- 21:35Speaker 1: ninety one. Of course it said usher in a new
- 21:38Speaker 1: golden age with Soto is the face of it. When
- 21:40Speaker 1: you sign a guy who is seven hundred and sixty
- 21:42Speaker 1: five million dollar contract, that has to be the plan,
- 21:45Speaker 1: especially when you're coming off an LCS appearance for the
- 21:48Speaker 1: foreseeable future, it's World Series or bust for the Mets.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Number three is the Yankees ninety one point two average.
- 21:54Speaker 1: It said to be better than last year. That's their expectation. Look,
- 21:58Speaker 1: sometimes the answers to these questions are about the teams themselves,
- 22:01Speaker 1: and so they talk about their deals. Number two Atlanta
- 22:04Speaker 1: Braves says after relatively quiet off season, the Braves are
- 22:08Speaker 1: a mild favorite the National Leagueese. But the purchase and
- 22:11Speaker 1: secure on papers it was a year ago at this time.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Back then, the hottest debate in baseball whether it's going
- 22:16Speaker 1: to be the Braves or Dodgers that emerges the new
- 22:17Speaker 1: super team.
- 22:19Speaker 2: So then Atlanta slipped in the.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Second place and number one, Yes, you know it's the
- 22:22Speaker 1: defending world champions. If the Dodgers projected for a win
- 22:25Speaker 1: average one on one point seven expectation. Whether you gamble
- 22:29Speaker 1: on sports or not, the betting lines are a good
- 22:32Speaker 1: summation of expectations. The Dodgers current over under from wins
- 22:35Speaker 1: at ESPN bet tells it all one oh four point five.
- 22:40Speaker 1: They said, I have no idea if that's a record,
- 22:42Speaker 1: But what I can say is that I have a
- 22:44Speaker 1: file of preseves and over under figures to go back
- 22:46Speaker 1: to seven, and it's the highest figure during that period.
- 22:49Speaker 1: It's not hard to understand why after winning the title
- 22:52Speaker 1: last fall and dominating the winner so thoroughly that it
- 22:54Speaker 1: add people wringing their hands about the state of the game.
- 22:57Speaker 1: There's only one expectation in Chevizvarine win it all again.
- 23:01Speaker 1: That's the expectation. The reality is the nature of the
- 23:04Speaker 1: game is such an even a team with a thundering
- 23:06Speaker 1: outlook like LA is an underdog.
- 23:09Speaker 2: To the field.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I totally agree with that, at least when you talk
- 23:11Speaker 1: about winning the World Series. But if you have to
- 23:14Speaker 1: pick the team most likely to pile on the mound
- 23:17Speaker 1: of the end of the Fall Classic. Why would you
- 23:19Speaker 1: possibly choose anyone other than the Dodgers at Bradford. Dudelittle's
- 23:23Speaker 1: right on the MLB stock watch there, But I think
- 23:27Speaker 1: he's right. It's the field, you know, if you take
- 23:31Speaker 1: the Dodgers of the field, as good as LA is
- 23:34Speaker 1: on that, I would still pick the field because the
- 23:36Speaker 1: odds are against it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: They just are.
- 23:38Speaker 1: It has been we haven't had a repeat winner since
- 23:40Speaker 1: what Yankees? Yeah, since two thousand, two thousand and one, No,
- 23:47Speaker 1: ninety nine and two thousand. I'm in backs one in one.
- 23:50Speaker 1: We haven't had We haven't had a repeat winner since
- 23:52Speaker 1: the Yankees. There, I think ninety nine in two thousand,
- 23:55Speaker 1: I think was the last time then we had a
- 23:56Speaker 1: repeat winner.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Am I wrong about that?
- 23:59Speaker 3: Let me double check. Only I can think of because
- 24:01Speaker 3: the Red Sox all when there's on opposite.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Yeah, they want to know four, they want to know seven.
- 24:05Speaker 1: They won in thirteen, they won in eighteen. Yeah, I don't.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I don't think we've had to repeat World Series champion
- 24:15Speaker 1: since ninety nine two thousand, correct.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's how hard it is. It's been over twenty years.
- 24:20Speaker 1: It's been twenty five years, twenty five years since we've
- 24:24Speaker 1: had a repeat World Series champion. That's why, even as
- 24:29Speaker 1: a hardcore Dodger fan as I am, if I was
- 24:31Speaker 1: back in the corner, said you had to pick the
- 24:32Speaker 1: Dodgers in the field, I would take the field only
- 24:34Speaker 1: because of the way baseball works.
- 24:37Speaker 2: It finds a way.
- 24:38Speaker 1: No matter what you want to say about payroll and
- 24:40Speaker 1: all this other stuff, Baseball finds a way to make
- 24:42Speaker 1: it work. And I think it's the postseason has a
- 24:44Speaker 1: lot to do with it, the wildcard system and the
- 24:46Speaker 1: way it's set.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Up all right.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Up next inconceivable Here on a Wednesday afternoon on a
- 24:51Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone, second hour of the program here
- 24:53Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone, Craig Way alongside the producer
- 24:56Speaker 1: Cameron Parker. Glad to have you alongside as well, and
- 25:00Speaker 1: we're with you all the way up until five o'clock
- 25:03Speaker 1: this afternoon again tomorrow, regular programming schedule coming your way
- 25:09Speaker 1: tomorrow and then after that Longhorn Weekly with Rodney Terry
- 25:15Speaker 1: out at Pluckers the West Campus location here in Austin.
- 25:20Speaker 1: We have a special guest tomorrow night, Trey Johnson. Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: long Horns outstanding freshman. We'll be with us tomorrow night
- 25:27Speaker 1: the program, so we'll look forward to bringing.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Back to you.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I come on out and listen to Trey and of
- 25:33Speaker 1: course coach Terry talk about the upcoming game in South
- 25:42Speaker 1: Carolina and the long worn second half surge to try
- 25:45Speaker 1: to get into the NCAA tournament. We're more than happy
- 25:51Speaker 1: to have you out there. Hope you'll can show up
- 25:54Speaker 1: out there as well. I mentioned this briefly in passing
- 25:58Speaker 1: yesterday that Joe Lenardi had in his bracketological prognostication and
- 26:06Speaker 1: move text us up a little bit.
- 26:08Speaker 3: He had him as the last of the four last
- 26:12Speaker 3: four buys.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Meaning those are the teams that don't have to go
- 26:15Speaker 1: to Dayton and play in the NCAA Tournament. And why
- 26:19Speaker 1: I refer to him and also to Jerry Palm's work
- 26:23Speaker 1: as well, is because those guys are usually in the
- 26:30Speaker 1: upper ninety percentile of their projections when the actual field
- 26:35Speaker 1: comes out.
- 26:35Speaker 2: So it's a pretty good measuring stake, it really is.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Lenardi is pretty regularly measured at between ninety six percent
- 26:41Speaker 1: and ninety eight percent correct when the bracket actually comes out,
- 26:44Speaker 1: and he also hits a very large number of the
- 26:47Speaker 1: actual regionals that the teams are placed in, which is
- 26:55Speaker 1: not an easy thing to do because the committee tries
- 26:58Speaker 1: to balance out the brackets. For example, just to let
- 27:02Speaker 1: you know what he has in his last four byes,
- 27:05Speaker 1: he has Texas is the number one team on his
- 27:08Speaker 1: last four bys top line, meaning that they would still
- 27:10Speaker 1: be in the sixty four team field once the four
- 27:15Speaker 1: playing games playing in other words, not having to play
- 27:18Speaker 1: in Dayton. The other three teams are West Virginia, BYU,
- 27:21Speaker 1: and Vanderbilt. West Virginia has a huge game this week.
- 27:26Speaker 1: They play Houston on Saturday. B YU got a big
- 27:29Speaker 1: boosting win, albeit over a fall in Kansas, but they
- 27:33Speaker 1: just they absolutely body slammed the Jayhawks last night.
- 27:37Speaker 3: They won a bout thirty four. And Vanderbilt, we know.
- 27:39Speaker 1: They've beaten Texas, they beaten Kentucky, they've beaten Tennessee, so
- 27:42Speaker 1: they're still hanging out. They're in the they're on the
- 27:45Speaker 1: bottom rung of the last four byes. The last four
- 27:49Speaker 1: in meaning you would be playing in Dayton. San Diego
- 27:54Speaker 1: was State Oklahoma. This was before the Sooners got whacked
- 27:57Speaker 1: by Florida last night. Arkansas, who has a big game.
- 28:01Speaker 1: They play Auburn tonight. So that's that's big and wake Forest. Yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 1: first four out VCU Georgia who the long runs still
- 28:12Speaker 1: have to play SMU and North Carolina and the next
- 28:17Speaker 1: four Indiana, Xavier, k State and uc R RNE. And
- 28:19Speaker 1: that was before k State I think, or maybe it
- 28:22Speaker 1: was after they lost at Utah. Kansas State had had
- 28:25Speaker 1: a couple of really good wins and they went out
- 28:28Speaker 1: to the.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Bee Hive State and got stung.
- 28:32Speaker 1: By them by Utah had had a tough time and
- 28:37Speaker 1: by b Yu as well.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Funny enough, I think Kansas was trolling them on social
- 28:43Speaker 3: media and they ended up.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Last night good.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Both of the Sunflower State teams, Kansas and Kansas State
- 28:52Speaker 1: went out and played both of the Beehive State teams
- 28:54Speaker 1: and went oh and two. Both of them did. Over
- 28:57Speaker 1: the weekend for the my son was asking me, he goes,
- 29:01Speaker 1: did they always go with two with two matchups of
- 29:05Speaker 1: eleven seeds in addition to the two matchups of sixteen
- 29:09Speaker 1: seeds or they do do twelves? I said, it depends.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It just depends on how they're trying to balance the bracket.
- 29:14Speaker 1: For example, Lenardi has an eleven seed matchup and a
- 29:18Speaker 1: twelve seed matchup in Dayton. The eleven seed matchup is
- 29:21Speaker 1: the San Diego State and Oklahoma. The twelve seed matchup
- 29:23Speaker 1: is Arkansas and Wake Forest. What I can tell you
- 29:26Speaker 1: this what is developing as a really big game next
- 29:33Speaker 1: Wednesday in Fayetteville will be Arkansas Texas huge. That's going
- 29:38Speaker 1: to be big for both schools. In his bracket, his
- 29:42Speaker 1: four number one seeds. Again, this was yesterday morning when
- 29:45Speaker 1: it was released, so it's even before stuff that went
- 29:47Speaker 1: last night. But yesterday morning he had his his four
- 29:51Speaker 1: number one seeds Auburn, Alabama, Florida and Duke three sec
- 29:55Speaker 1: one AC Seed and Auburn in the the South region,
- 30:00Speaker 1: which ultimately brackets into Atlanta. He's got Alabama as the
- 30:05Speaker 1: number one in the Midwest, starting in Lexington, ultimately feeding
- 30:08Speaker 1: in the Indianapolis. Auburn also would be in in Lexington,
- 30:13Speaker 1: and then he's got Florida's number one seat in the West,
- 30:15Speaker 1: opening in San Francisco and actually opening in Raleigh and
- 30:20Speaker 1: ultimately feeding the San Francisco and Duke. The number one
- 30:23Speaker 1: in the East would ultimately into Newark starting in Raleigh
- 30:26Speaker 1: as well. Texas he has placed in the South, which
- 30:34Speaker 1: would feed into Atlanta's the number ten seed and would
- 30:36Speaker 1: play Saint Mary's with the winner to face the Winter
- 30:38Speaker 1: VI was State and Bryant I was State one last night,
- 30:41Speaker 1: so they're still on the rise. Houston is the number
- 30:43Speaker 1: two along with Iris. Stated he had Texas A and
- 30:45Speaker 1: Amazon too, but they got thumbed pretty hard last night
- 30:48Speaker 1: by Mississippi State and Starkville ended their five game winning
- 30:51Speaker 1: Streek and he has Tennessee's the other number two.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Half.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it was, so there's still things to be decided
- 30:58Speaker 1: the rest of the way. The four number threes was
- 31:00Speaker 1: Some which beat Purdue. Good win for the Badgers last night. Kentucky.
- 31:04Speaker 1: They're becoming a sneaky, really good team. Yep, agreed. Purdue
- 31:08Speaker 1: is a three that may slide after that loss in
- 31:10Speaker 1: Arizona's a three which got the win in Waco on
- 31:12Speaker 1: Monday night over Baylor. And the four number fours would
- 31:17Speaker 1: be Saint John's Michigan Texas Tech, which lost to TCU
- 31:22Speaker 1: last Nay.
- 31:23Speaker 2: What a weird game that was. Yeah, in Michigan State.
- 31:27Speaker 1: They lost by I guess they lost by No, they
- 31:31Speaker 1: lost by three because here's what happened. Tech had Tech
- 31:35Speaker 1: trailed for a lot of the game, and the Red
- 31:38Speaker 1: Raiders came back, jumped in front, and I think scored
- 31:43Speaker 1: all of two points.
- 31:43Speaker 2: In the final five minutes of the basketball game.
- 31:46Speaker 1: TSU came back, hit some shots, but missed a bunch
- 31:48Speaker 1: of free throws that kept Tech hanging around, and ultimately
- 31:53Speaker 1: TCU missed or rebounded. They missed from Texas. Tech got
- 31:57Speaker 1: fouled with like four second it's left. They went to
- 32:01Speaker 1: the free throw line, made the made one out of
- 32:06Speaker 1: tude to go up three, made the second one. Tech inbounds.
- 32:10Speaker 1: They get the ball to Toppin who puts one up
- 32:15Speaker 1: straight away about twenty five feet. I'd say it looked
- 32:19Speaker 1: like right on, except the shot was blocked. Tech coaches
- 32:23Speaker 1: went crazy. They thought it was a foul, but when
- 32:25Speaker 1: you saw the replay, it probably wasn't gonna be called.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And uh and so that was it. So TCU. Our
- 32:33Speaker 1: friend Louyl Galindo was doing the telecast last night. He's
- 32:36Speaker 1: working with Tom Creane, and he said, they've caught the
- 32:39Speaker 1: attention to the Ncaaight, yeah, but they're three and eight
- 32:43Speaker 1: in Quad one games and they're sixteen and eleven now,
- 32:48Speaker 1: so I mean they're gonna need they're gonna need more
- 32:50Speaker 1: of those, and I think they still have to play
- 32:52Speaker 1: Houston again, so they're gonna need more of those to
- 32:56Speaker 1: really get on the front. Like you know, they're not
- 32:58Speaker 1: even in Lenard's next four right out right now, so
- 33:02Speaker 1: it would have to take something like that even to
- 33:04Speaker 1: just to kind of get them on the radar.
- 33:05Speaker 2: They're gonna have to have some more wins like that.
- 33:08Speaker 1: But there's but there's movement within all of that, even
- 33:11Speaker 1: within the top teams in the Power five conferences, and
- 33:18Speaker 1: and and we could say Power five. Now we remember
- 33:20Speaker 1: we got kind of hung up between this Power five
- 33:22Speaker 1: and Power six because you wanted to include the Big
- 33:24Speaker 1: East as a power conference. Well, now that there's no
- 33:27Speaker 1: more Pac twelve, it's very simple to say Power five again.
- 33:30Speaker 1: So it's ACCI, it's it's SEC, it's Big twelve, it's
- 33:36Speaker 1: Big East, and it's Big Ten, so it's Power fives
- 33:41Speaker 1: off of that, Looking looking at texas remaining schedule five games, Craig, Yeah,
- 33:45Speaker 1: one ranked team currently that's at Mississippi State.
- 33:48Speaker 3: But three of those five games Texas should be favored
- 33:51Speaker 3: in two were at home. So if Taxes can go
- 33:54Speaker 3: three and two at least the next five games, I
- 33:57Speaker 3: think they'll be all right, Craig, But it's also a
- 33:59Speaker 3: stretch where I think Artie wants to see this team
- 34:01Speaker 3: get healthy in jail. He talked about it yesterday and
- 34:04Speaker 3: his media availability the word flow a flow state. I
- 34:07Speaker 3: don't think I've ever heard the word flow state or
- 34:09Speaker 3: even the phrase flow state be repeated as much as
- 34:11Speaker 3: it was yesterday in that media availability. But you know, Texas,
- 34:14Speaker 3: I guess, was in a flow state when they closed
- 34:15Speaker 3: out the win over Kentucky. Just trying to get healthy.
- 34:18Speaker 3: But you know, you want to see some some more
- 34:20Speaker 3: signs of positivity down the stretch, and if Texas can
- 34:23Speaker 3: close out these last five games, and it starts on
- 34:25Speaker 3: Saturday against Columbia against South Carolina, team that you know,
- 34:28Speaker 3: you always worry about these quote unquote trap games, a
- 34:31Speaker 3: team that is below you in the rankings, that probably
- 34:33Speaker 3: doesn't have anything to play for.
- 34:35Speaker 2: You know, always got to be aware of teams like that.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, because a loss to a team like that can
- 34:41Speaker 1: be every bit is damaging as a win over a
- 34:44Speaker 1: Kentucky can be helpful. So and they're all well aware
- 34:48Speaker 1: of that. What'd you say flow stage? Well?
- 34:51Speaker 3: I think are you say flow state? Flows? Is it
- 34:54Speaker 3: flow state? I think it is. I'm gonna have to
- 34:56Speaker 3: ask him about that. Yeah, not like flow from progressive
- 34:59Speaker 3: commercial flow as on like you're flowing, the team is flowing.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Or flows sports that does the college baseball. Yeah yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 1: all right. Up next, we're going to hear from Long
- 35:11Speaker 1: Orange for Jason Kent, who has really started to help
- 35:14Speaker 1: the team down the stretch of the season.
- 35:16Speaker 2: So we'll do that. I will get to your questions.
- 35:19Speaker 1: We've got some other things to get to as well
- 35:20Speaker 1: as we continue here on thirteen under his own bringing
- 35:23Speaker 1: us back with Kenny Loggins last hour, said Kenny Logins
- 35:26Speaker 1: sang the Forefather song to one Shining Moment from Mars Badness. Yeah,
- 35:30Speaker 1: it was this is It? NBC used this is It
- 35:33Speaker 1: in It's NCAA Tournament opens. I want to say seventy nine,
- 35:40Speaker 1: eighty and eighty one. I think those three years those
- 35:42Speaker 1: were the eighty one was last year that that NBC
- 35:45Speaker 1: at the NCAA Tournament, and I think it was seventy nine,
- 35:49Speaker 1: eight and eighty one.
- 35:50Speaker 3: It's covered in the yacht Rock documentary.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Yeah it was. It's in that documentary. It certainly is
- 35:56Speaker 2: as well.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Uh. And then I resident Guardians fan saying, you know,
- 35:59Speaker 1: my guardians are always undervalued and underappreciated. Most resourceful front
- 36:04Speaker 1: office in baseball always finds a way second. Most wins
- 36:08Speaker 1: in the American League since twenty thirteen. All of that
- 36:11Speaker 1: is completely true, my friend, as well as the reality
- 36:15Speaker 1: they've not won a World Series since nineteen forty eight,
- 36:18Speaker 1: when they beat the Boston Braves, five years before they
- 36:22Speaker 1: became the Milwaukee Braves, and then twelve years thirteen years
- 36:26Speaker 1: before they became the Atlanta Braves.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It's been a long time.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Do you think they are the modern day version of
- 36:31Speaker 3: what Billy Bean was doing in the early two thousands
- 36:33Speaker 3: with considering their payroll and being in a smaller market,
- 36:37Speaker 3: what they've been able to accomplish without the they've had success,
- 36:40Speaker 3: but not obviously the ultimates.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the over the top success.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I mean, they went to the World Series in ninety seven,
- 36:45Speaker 1: and I thought they were going to get that blust
- 36:48Speaker 1: the Cubs, right three.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that's right.
- 36:51Speaker 1: They were there in twenty sixteen and ninety seven they
- 36:53Speaker 1: lost in Game seven to the Marlins, and then and
- 36:57Speaker 1: then and then in twenty sixteen, Yeah, the three to
- 37:01Speaker 1: one lead of the Cubs and it didn't, it didn't.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It ended up not happening.
- 37:05Speaker 3: They had because the Cavs came back to beat the
- 37:08Speaker 3: Warriors three to one. They sacrifice the Indians at the time,
- 37:12Speaker 3: that was the whole that was blood, you know, Lebron
- 37:16Speaker 3: that deal. So Lebron got his ring, but he had
- 37:19Speaker 3: to sacrifice the Indians winning the World Series.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And and the Browns of course had won an NFL
- 37:25Speaker 1: title since pre Super Bowler at Itteen sixty four, so
- 37:27Speaker 1: last time the Browns won a title as well. Not
- 37:31Speaker 1: trying to cause any pain, I'm just just saying, I know,
- 37:34Speaker 1: I understand.
- 37:35Speaker 2: How that is. Uh.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Back to college basketball and uh, Jason Kent has been
- 37:42Speaker 1: a guy who's been a factor for.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Them of late. Uh.
- 37:48Speaker 1: And it was a it was a different world for
- 37:52Speaker 1: him because he was a starter and a key contributing
- 37:55Speaker 1: to Indiana States team and all the way to the
- 37:57Speaker 1: n i T Championship game before they fell in the
- 37:59Speaker 1: n IT five know last year. So it's been more
- 38:01Speaker 1: of a role situation, especially since he had the early
- 38:04Speaker 1: season risk injury in miss time, so it's been kind
- 38:07Speaker 1: of a role thing. Now. He did start against Kentucky
- 38:09Speaker 1: with Arthur Klem out of the lineup and has contributed
- 38:11Speaker 1: the last couple of ball games, and he was asked,
- 38:14Speaker 1: how difficult is it to not play as many minutes
- 38:17Speaker 1: as he did when he was playing for Indiana State.
- 38:20Speaker 5: Uh, It's it's super difficult. You know.
- 38:21Speaker 6: I want to be out there with my brothers, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 6: competing at a high level, you know, be there on
- 38:26Speaker 6: the court, playing with them. But it's hard when you
- 38:28Speaker 6: can't practice with them, when you can't live with them,
- 38:31Speaker 6: you know.
- 38:32Speaker 5: So it was definitely definitely difficult.
- 38:34Speaker 6: But knowing that they have my back end cheering me
- 38:37Speaker 6: on and you know, encouraging me was was good. Was
- 38:40Speaker 6: good for me to feel like I was still part
- 38:41Speaker 6: of that even though I wasn't on the court with him.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Jason was asked about his relationship with his sister Janey,
- 38:45Speaker 1: who played the game.
- 38:47Speaker 6: It's it's all love between us two. You know, I'm
- 38:49Speaker 6: literally her biggest fan. You know, I cheer her on
- 38:52Speaker 6: no matter. I would die for that ground Carol, what
- 38:54Speaker 6: team she's on. But at the end of the day,
- 38:57Speaker 6: you know, she's she tells me she watches every game
- 38:59Speaker 6: and to watch every game of hers. But you know
- 39:02Speaker 6: she always comes to me for you know, basketball by
- 39:04Speaker 6: she always asked me what can I do better?
- 39:06Speaker 5: What do you see?
- 39:07Speaker 6: You know, I'm like her, I'm like a little coach,
- 39:10Speaker 6: you know, without being her coach. So we work out together,
- 39:13Speaker 6: you know, we joke around, but it's a it's a
- 39:15Speaker 6: it's a really tight bond that I have with my
- 39:17Speaker 6: sister where if I really need.
- 39:18Speaker 5: To talk to somebody, I can always count on my
- 39:20Speaker 5: sister for sure.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Which and that brings us to the transfer portal about
- 39:24Speaker 1: talking to her and talking to Julian Larry, his fellow
- 39:27Speaker 1: teammate at Indiana State and who leaned on who during
- 39:30Speaker 1: the whole transfer process.
- 39:31Speaker 6: You know, she was definitely leaning on me a little
- 39:33Speaker 6: bit because you know, she wanted to pick a spot
- 39:35Speaker 6: to where what benefit her. You know, ended up we
- 39:38Speaker 6: both in Texas. But at the end of the day,
- 39:40Speaker 6: I told her, you got to go where you want
- 39:42Speaker 6: to be happy, where you want to be successful. And
- 39:45Speaker 6: I'm always here to watch watch film on the team,
- 39:47Speaker 6: give you my input, and we can always sit down
- 39:49Speaker 6: and break it down together.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Then you know, here we are headed to the stretch
- 39:56Speaker 1: drive of the season longer too, five games remaining, and
- 40:00Speaker 1: and Jason Camples asked what the team needs to figure
- 40:03Speaker 1: out down the stretch of this season.
- 40:05Speaker 6: I would say, just just playing the whole forty minutes,
- 40:09Speaker 6: competing at a high level. You know, we are very
- 40:11Speaker 6: competitive team, We are a hungry team, and we just
- 40:16Speaker 6: want to win at the end of the day. So
- 40:17Speaker 6: just maintaining that focus, that concentration, those those little details
- 40:21Speaker 6: we need to get over the hump, because we're right there.
- 40:24Speaker 5: It's just those little details to get over the hump
- 40:26Speaker 5: that we would need.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he sounds like a coach because Ronnie talks about
- 40:30Speaker 1: the details. It it's all the way back to when
- 40:32Speaker 1: Barnes's coach and you talk about the details, the devil
- 40:34Speaker 1: in the details and the importance of the details. This
- 40:37Speaker 1: is an open date week, as we mentioned, so there
- 40:39Speaker 1: was no game last night, there's no game tonight, so
- 40:42Speaker 1: they've been able to get some rest, recoup, as Riding
- 40:46Speaker 1: likes to say, let your bodies recover, and then get
- 40:48Speaker 1: back on the practice floor before headed to South Carolina
- 40:51Speaker 1: on Friday for the game on Saturday night. So Jason
- 40:53Speaker 1: can ask how big is this week for the guys
- 40:56Speaker 1: to be able to rest.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Up and heal up.
- 40:58Speaker 6: It's me you know, guys gets to recover their bodies physically, mentally,
- 41:03Speaker 6: you know, hit the reset button from the games so
- 41:06Speaker 6: we can give it all we got in this last stretch.
- 41:09Speaker 5: So this is this week is important.
- 41:10Speaker 6: We also get a chance to work on things we
- 41:13Speaker 6: need to get better on and figure out what little
- 41:16Speaker 6: details we can fix now practice so that when it's
- 41:18Speaker 6: in the game is fixed, we're ready to go to
- 41:20Speaker 6: finish out this season.
- 41:21Speaker 1: So there it is some thoughts and some comments from
- 41:24Speaker 1: Jason Camp and they're gonna they're gonna need him. And
- 41:30Speaker 1: the the intriguing thing about this is that they have
- 41:34Speaker 1: a chance, because there are five games left, they do
- 41:39Speaker 1: have a chance to enhance they're NCAA tournament profile again
- 41:48Speaker 1: by virtually any measure in any UH racketology examination that
- 41:56Speaker 1: you go through right now, any of them, they all
- 41:59Speaker 1: have taxes in the field. It just depends on which
- 42:02Speaker 1: one you follow is to see exactly where they are.
- 42:04Speaker 1: For example, Jerry Palm has Texas in the field, but
- 42:09Speaker 1: Jerry has had Texas lower in his mind than say,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you know, Joe Lonardi or Andy Katz or a couple
- 42:21Speaker 1: of the other guys, and so he has Texas still
- 42:22Speaker 1: in the first four he's got him as an eleven seed.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Now again going back to what I'd mentioned earlier.
- 42:28Speaker 1: That my son had asked me, does the NCAA always
- 42:31Speaker 1: put two eleven seeded matchups to go with the two
- 42:34Speaker 1: sixteen seeds or is it too twelve seated matchups? And
- 42:37Speaker 1: I said it just depends on the year. Like the
- 42:39Speaker 1: year that I did the first four in Dayton for
- 42:41Speaker 1: Westwood One. What was that twenty sixteen when I did that?
- 42:45Speaker 1: It was two eleven seeded matchups? It was I think
- 42:47Speaker 1: I did Wichitas State against California, and I did Michigan.
- 42:54Speaker 2: I forgot who I did on that.
- 42:56Speaker 1: I remember that one of the sixteen matchups it was
- 42:58Speaker 1: holy Cross and Southern great matchup in that twenty sixteen,
- 43:03Speaker 1: twenty sixteen pull that up. Tell you what were the
- 43:05Speaker 1: what were the first four matchups? Uh there in Dayton.
- 43:10Speaker 1: I'm certain twenty sixteen was the year I did.
- 43:12Speaker 3: It was Florida Gulf Coast and Farley Dickinson Yep, yep,
- 43:16Speaker 3: that was a good one.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Michigan and Tulsa Whols was the one I was trying.
- 43:19Speaker 1: That was an eleven seat?
- 43:20Speaker 4: Right?
- 43:21Speaker 3: Was that the Florida Gulf Coast year that Dunk City
- 43:24Speaker 3: was that?
- 43:24Speaker 1: No year after fifteen was the year that they that
- 43:27Speaker 1: they went to the sweet sixteen because the fifteen seed, right, yep, yep,
- 43:31Speaker 1: and got to the sweet sixteen and then and then
- 43:33Speaker 1: what was the other eleven seed matchup?
- 43:35Speaker 2: Was it witch daw State and cal Vanderbilt?
- 43:38Speaker 1: I knew there was Golden Halt, which and what was
- 43:41Speaker 1: the other holy Cross in Southern year?
- 43:42Speaker 2: That's it, That's the one.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I said, holy Cross in Southern So I remember, did
- 43:47Speaker 1: any of those come down to like a one point
- 43:48Speaker 1: two point game?
- 43:50Speaker 3: Michigan won by five, holy Cross won by four, the
- 43:53Speaker 3: either two or blowouts?
- 43:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I think holy Cross hit a three late and
- 43:58Speaker 1: then and then Southern Misster shot and then the holy
- 44:01Speaker 1: Cross got fouled, and it was it was a good.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Baylines last year? Or was he already in Cleveland by then?
- 44:08Speaker 3: And I think I think beyond he would have been
- 44:11Speaker 3: that still would have been Lebron James, So he must
- 44:14Speaker 3: have still been there.
- 44:15Speaker 1: He was he was because I remember sitting down and
- 44:18Speaker 1: visiting with him. It was very good, yes, very nice. Yeah, yes,
- 44:24Speaker 1: but that was a fun event. And and yeah there's that,
- 44:29Speaker 1: you know, there's there's always going to be a stigma
- 44:31Speaker 1: to a play in there just is because you weren't
- 44:35Speaker 1: good enough to get into the full field of sixty
- 44:36Speaker 1: four on your own, so now you got to play
- 44:38Speaker 1: your way in. But the play in has been really cool,
- 44:41Speaker 1: just like who was it that said this the other day,
- 44:45Speaker 1: Hendrick Perkins? And I don't agree with Kendrick Perkins on much.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Oh boy, he though liked the All Star format, of course,
- 44:53Speaker 1: because he said, and you tell me if this is wrong.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I didn't watch the All Star stuff, but but the
- 45:00Speaker 1: stuff that I know I was watching the Saturday Night
- 45:02Speaker 1: Live fiftieth over it was that she was incredible.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 45:06Speaker 1: But he said, I think he made a good point
- 45:08Speaker 1: on this, and I've seen others make the same point
- 45:10Speaker 1: that it was more competitive than all Star games had
- 45:13Speaker 1: been in many many years because that the rising stars,
- 45:17Speaker 1: like you said, you knew they were going to play hard,
- 45:19Speaker 1: and so some of the veterans played hard as a
- 45:21Speaker 1: result of that. So you got much more of competitive
- 45:26Speaker 1: nature of.
- 45:27Speaker 3: The games as a result of that. I would disagree.
- 45:30Speaker 3: I did not watch the whole weekend, to be honest
- 45:32Speaker 3: with you. I watched the because it was like eleven
- 45:36Speaker 3: pm at night and going to bed and say, oh,
- 45:37Speaker 3: the All Star Game is finally starting o'clock. What's going
- 45:41Speaker 3: on here? It's just like the last couple of years, Craig.
- 45:43Speaker 3: It's guys taking wide open threes and if anyone could
- 45:46Speaker 3: have gotten a dunk they wanted to. Competition's not there.
- 45:49Speaker 3: But I don't really know what the fix is because
- 45:53Speaker 3: you know, if you go to the MLB format what
- 45:55Speaker 3: it used to be anyways, where you know the winner
- 45:58Speaker 3: would get home court. And in the World Series, do
- 46:03Speaker 3: you have guys who are playing in the game who
- 46:05Speaker 3: have no chance of making the NBA Finals. You're relying
- 46:09Speaker 3: on Trey Young who's just taking half court shots from three.
- 46:11Speaker 3: So I don't know how that format would solve anything.
- 46:14Speaker 3: And also, someone made a good point on Twitter yesterday
- 46:17Speaker 3: it was like, it's not so much a game, it's
- 46:20Speaker 3: you know, you have corporate events, you have you know,
- 46:23Speaker 3: these guys got to go go do speeches, they do
- 46:26Speaker 3: stuff for sponsorships like Super Bowl week. It's a corporate thing,
- 46:29Speaker 3: and then there's a basketball game, right. I think it
- 46:33Speaker 3: was Steph Curry said, take away all that and let
- 46:36Speaker 3: the guys actually focus on the game, and you know,
- 46:39Speaker 3: maybe it'll be a competitive game. But I don't think
- 46:41Speaker 3: Adam silver or the NBA really cares that much because
- 46:44Speaker 3: there's so much money coming in from like sponsors stuff. Sure,
- 46:48Speaker 3: but I did not the whole watch. I did not
- 46:50Speaker 3: watch the whole weekend. I heard there's a lot of
- 46:51Speaker 3: Kevin Hart, So like Kevin Hart.
- 46:54Speaker 2: You don't like Kevin Well.
- 46:56Speaker 1: The other what Kendrick Perkins was saying was he liked
- 46:59Speaker 1: the format because he said, it just needs time for
- 47:02Speaker 1: people to get used to. He said they were saying
- 47:04Speaker 1: the same thing about the play in tournament in the NBA.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Nobody liked it. Nobody thought it was a good idea.
- 47:09Speaker 1: He goes, look what it's done for the game now,
- 47:11Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 47:12Speaker 3: So like, okay, if the Rising Star team makes the
- 47:14Speaker 3: finals and like, no offense to these guys, but if
- 47:17Speaker 3: it's Stefan Castle and amntops and yea, like the casual
- 47:22Speaker 3: fan doesn't really care, Like why people like you watched
- 47:25Speaker 3: the All Star Game, Like in the seventies and eighties
- 47:28Speaker 3: one time that you could see Larry Bird play with
- 47:32Speaker 3: guys like George Gervin, because you would you would never
- 47:34Speaker 3: see George Gervin on national television. And even if you
- 47:38Speaker 3: even you probably wouldn't see Larry Bird that much because
- 47:40Speaker 3: of how TV rights work. So there was kind of
- 47:42Speaker 3: what an allure to All Star weekend because you're gonna
- 47:44Speaker 3: see all the top players on the court together at
- 47:47Speaker 3: the same time. You would never see that Now with
- 47:50Speaker 3: Twitter and social media, you know, you can watch any
- 47:53Speaker 3: player you want, So there's not the same allure to
- 47:55Speaker 3: see them in an All Star Game because like, yeah, okay,
- 47:57Speaker 3: cool Giannis is playing with Trey Young and Wemby. Okay,
- 48:00Speaker 3: I can just go on YouTube and watch one highlights
- 48:02Speaker 3: right now. So I think also some of that takes
- 48:05Speaker 3: away from the All Star Game, and that's why I
- 48:07Speaker 3: don't think it will ever be as popular as it
- 48:09Speaker 3: once was.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Well as it bring this back around, he talked about
- 48:13Speaker 1: the playing tournament. What I was saying about the play
- 48:15Speaker 1: in the first four as they call it in the
- 48:18Speaker 1: NC tournament, everybody's ultimately gotten used to it and adopted.
- 48:21Speaker 3: I don't mind it. Ye, it expend the tournament.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, if they go to ninety six teams, what
- 48:30Speaker 1: they would do is give you know, one seed a
- 48:33Speaker 1: buy right, they would give they would give what was
- 48:36Speaker 1: it the four No, let's see, you would go to
- 48:41Speaker 1: and they would give the top eight seeds at first round,
- 48:45Speaker 1: by is the way that that would work. So just
- 48:49Speaker 1: like with the SEC tournament, we know that if you
- 48:52Speaker 1: finish in the top eight, you get a single buy,
- 48:54Speaker 1: if you finish in the top four you get a
- 48:55Speaker 1: double buy. And if you finish below eight, you're playing
- 48:59Speaker 1: on Wednesday, and you got to win five games to
- 49:01Speaker 1: win the thing. So but I think it's a good
- 49:05Speaker 1: thing with the NCAA tournament. It's a little bit different
- 49:08Speaker 1: with the women's tournament because of home courts and where
- 49:11Speaker 1: they have to play those but played in Dayton, where
- 49:15Speaker 1: that city wraps its arms around that event, much like
- 49:17Speaker 1: Omaha does for the College World Series. That's their event,
- 49:21Speaker 1: and it's big, and those games are all sellid. It
- 49:23Speaker 1: wouldn't matter if it was four sixteen seed matchups, and
- 49:26Speaker 1: it used to be that initially sold out, didn't matter.
- 49:30Speaker 1: All thirteen five hundred seats there and the Dayton Arenas
- 49:32Speaker 1: sold out. It's a lot of fun. All right, We've
- 49:35Speaker 1: got some other things to get too. We'll continue here
- 49:36Speaker 1: on AM thirteen under the Zone. I was mentioning college basketball,
- 49:40Speaker 1: and whereas I said, Jerry Palm did not have Texas
- 49:46Speaker 1: as highly considered as say a couple of the other
- 49:50Speaker 1: racketologists did. And historically Jerry has always kind of had
- 49:57Speaker 1: Texas a little bit lower than some of the others.
- 49:59Speaker 1: We've had him on the show before. In fact, I'll
- 50:00Speaker 1: get him back on. He's he's very entertaining to talk to.
- 50:03Speaker 4: He just.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Doesn't feel like they're into the field.
- 50:09Speaker 1: He's got them right at the top of those who
- 50:12Speaker 1: are playing in the first four. He hasn't playing against
- 50:14Speaker 1: b Yu. I would say this, b Yu's probably played
- 50:17Speaker 1: its way into the field for sure by now.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Their scary team. They got some good fresh air.
- 50:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and we saw how good they were last year
- 50:25Speaker 3: when they were a veteran team.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And he has Arkansas and West Virginia in a matchup
- 50:30Speaker 1: of eleven seeds.
- 50:31Speaker 2: That would that would be pretty interesting.
- 50:34Speaker 1: The four number one ones he has the same as
- 50:39Speaker 1: as Lenardi has. He's got Auburn in the south, Alabama
- 50:42Speaker 1: in the midwest, Florida in the west, and Duke in
- 50:44Speaker 1: the east.
- 50:45Speaker 2: That's pretty much.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Been Uh, that's kind of a uniform look at it
- 50:52Speaker 1: right now from from most of the bracketologists. Then another
- 50:57Speaker 1: one that I usually follow is Andy Katz. Remember Andy
- 51:02Speaker 1: Katz from ESPN and and doing all I think Andy
- 51:06Speaker 1: Andy is the Action Network now Action Network and does
- 51:11Speaker 1: a lot of things for the NCAA. That's right, and
- 51:15Speaker 1: so his NCAA dot com. He came back, you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: after the Top sixteen reveal and then and then followed
- 51:26Speaker 1: that up his his latest projections came out on Monday,
- 51:30Speaker 1: and those have Texas in the field. He's got thirteen
- 51:34Speaker 1: teams from the SEC in the field of sixty eight
- 51:38Speaker 1: uh and he currently has out of the sixty eight
- 51:40Speaker 1: teams he has, Texas is the fortieth team in the
- 51:44Speaker 1: field of sixty eight. He's got him as a ten
- 51:47Speaker 1: seed where they would play Louisville in the first round
- 51:51Speaker 1: in the East. And Leonardi had Texas in a ten
- 51:56Speaker 1: to seven matchup with Louisville a couple of weeks ago
- 51:58Speaker 1: before the three game losing streak, and now that they
- 52:01Speaker 1: climb back into ten, he's got them in the ten
- 52:04Speaker 1: out West or in the South, rather playing against Saint Mary's.
- 52:08Speaker 1: And I don't know that that might not be a
- 52:10Speaker 1: tougher matchup playing Saint Mary's than Louisville. If you see
- 52:13Speaker 1: Saint Mary's play this year, seen them beat Gonzaga, they
- 52:16Speaker 1: look they look really good, so I would say, you know,
- 52:21Speaker 1: it's it'd be difficult to do it, okays.
- 52:24Speaker 2: As a point, as I said at the.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Top of the program, when considering teams where they are,
- 52:34Speaker 1: the work they have to do to try to get
- 52:36Speaker 1: into the field of sixty eight, there is this index
- 52:42Speaker 1: called the Billis Index. Is Jay Billison does it. This
- 52:46Speaker 1: is his second volume. He updates it his top sixty
- 52:49Speaker 1: eight teams in men's college basketball, so he ranks them.
- 52:53Speaker 1: So if you're wondering who he has number one, I
- 52:58Speaker 1: think he can prob a guess Talvern.
- 53:01Speaker 2: He has duped to Houston.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Three, Florida four, Alabama five, Tennessee six. Now he had
- 53:08Speaker 1: Texas Tech seven. But again, this was before the Red
- 53:11Speaker 1: Raiders lost last night in Fort Worth, Iowa State eight,
- 53:18Speaker 1: Texas A and M nine again, before the Aggies lost
- 53:20Speaker 1: last night Purdue ten.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Again, before the Boilermakers lost last night.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Wisconsin who beat Perdue at number eleven, Arizona at twelve.
- 53:30Speaker 1: This was before their win in Waco, Michigan thirteen, the
- 53:35Speaker 1: Missouri fourteen, Kansas at fifteen, even though they're twenty third
- 53:39Speaker 1: to Poe and then just got absolutely just you know,
- 53:44Speaker 1: beat all up by BYU last night. He said the
- 53:48Speaker 1: preseason number one team is mired in a win one
- 53:51Speaker 1: lose one funk right now and inconsistent offense.
- 53:55Speaker 2: That's what everybody saying about the Jayhawks.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Plus inconsistent production from key complimentary players is the reason,
- 54:01Speaker 1: he said. Hunter Dickinson, kJ Adams, Dwan Harris, and Zeke
- 54:05Speaker 1: Mayo have been good but have not had consistent help.
- 54:09Speaker 1: If and when aj Store and Ryland Griffin provide that
- 54:11Speaker 1: consistent production, Kansas can be a tough out, but this
- 54:13Speaker 1: Kansas team is not looking like a Final four threat
- 54:16Speaker 1: right now. In fact, Seth Greenberg was asked about him
- 54:19Speaker 1: on Sports Center this morning. He said, they're out first weekend.
- 54:22Speaker 1: He thinks they're going to be out first weekend. Marquette sixteen,
- 54:26Speaker 1: Kentucky's seventeen, Michigan State eighteen, Yukon nineteen. They had to
- 54:32Speaker 1: come from behind to beat Bill and Love last night,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and Maryland completes the top twenty Texas you ask, he
- 54:38Speaker 1: has Texas at number thirty four, right behind Oklahoma and
- 54:46Speaker 1: Yeah Yeah and Oklahom at thirty three. Says Oklahoma was
- 54:49Speaker 1: toward the bottom of a stacked SEC but went thirteen
- 54:52Speaker 1: in O to open the season with the mid December
- 54:53Speaker 1: Winever Michigan that has aged well, proving it can hang
- 54:56Speaker 1: with teams in March still as soon as they're steering
- 54:59Speaker 1: down the true gauntlet, a final regular season stretch starting
- 55:02Speaker 1: a Tuesday's game that Florida's he was before that game,
- 55:05Speaker 1: followed by four more ranked matchups until finally catching a
- 55:08Speaker 1: break against Texas in the finale.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Can I offer a buttle? Sure, they've lost six to seven? Now, okay,
- 55:14Speaker 3: you could say, yeah, well, you know, five of those
- 55:16Speaker 3: loss have been against top twenty five teams. Okay, lost
- 55:19Speaker 3: LSU at home, like three points. That's a bad, bad,
- 55:22Speaker 3: ugly loss. And then you also began conference play, oh
- 55:25Speaker 3: to four. So what is Oklahoma's best conference win home
- 55:29Speaker 3: against twenty fourth Vanderbilt. Outside of that, Craig, their wins
- 55:34Speaker 3: are South Carolina, who has not won a game yet
- 55:36Speaker 3: in conference play at Arkansas, which, okay, I'll give you that,
- 55:39Speaker 3: but it was you know, beginning the conference play for
- 55:42Speaker 3: an Arkansas on the road as three point all right,
- 55:46Speaker 3: so that's good. And then they beat Vanderbilt. Yeah so well.
- 55:51Speaker 3: And also their next four games, Craig against top twenty
- 55:54Speaker 3: five teams and the end the season at Tech.
- 55:55Speaker 1: That's what I started to say, that's gonna this is
- 55:58Speaker 1: gonna solve itself with Oklahoma, their destinies in their control.
- 56:02Speaker 2: But who are those next teams that they're playing.
- 56:05Speaker 3: Mississippi State at home? Yeah, home for Kentucky, Yeah, at Ole,
- 56:09Speaker 3: miss yeh home for Missouri, and at Texas. So three
- 56:14Speaker 3: of four at home and then three or five at home.
- 56:18Speaker 1: But they haven't exactly proved to be world beaters at home.
- 56:21Speaker 1: They lost to Texas home, they lost the LSU at home. Yeah,
- 56:23Speaker 1: I don't think they have that much of a home
- 56:25Speaker 1: court environment. Greg And with regard to Texas, he said,
- 56:29Speaker 1: Trey Johnson has lived up to the hype as one
- 56:30Speaker 1: of the best freshmen in the country. He's a dynamics
- 56:32Speaker 1: scorerho can make plays from anywhere on the court, leading
- 56:35Speaker 1: the SEC with the nineteen point eight points per game average.
- 56:38Speaker 1: He's a main driver of Texas top thirty status and
- 56:41Speaker 1: Ken Palms adjusted offensive efficiency ratings. The Longhorns hope for
- 56:46Speaker 1: an at large bid remain within reach with the worst
- 56:49Speaker 1: of their schedule behind them. A March fourth trip to
- 56:51Speaker 1: Mississippi State is their toughest remaining test.
- 56:53Speaker 2: True.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Even if that one is a loss, even at the
- 56:57Speaker 1: game at Arkansas loss. That they win the other three games,
- 57:00Speaker 1: they're sitting to nineteen going into Nashville for the time,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I think they're in if they win four of the five,
- 57:04Speaker 1: which would probably mean winning in Fayetteville. If they did that,
- 57:07Speaker 1: I think they're a lock in. At that point. They're
- 57:09Speaker 1: at twenty wins going in with a net ranking that
- 57:12Speaker 1: would be in the twenties if that were to happen.
- 57:15Speaker 1: So that's the other thing you'd pay too, by the way,
- 57:17Speaker 1: they pay attention to. By the way, the NCAA does
- 57:19Speaker 1: not use kim Pom anymore. They use net rankings, but
- 57:22Speaker 1: they don't. But what he is talking about is ken
- 57:25Speaker 1: Palm's adjusted offensive efficiency, those kind of metrics like Pro
- 57:29Speaker 1: Football Focus, those kind of metrics, not in terms of
- 57:33Speaker 1: the rankings. The net rankings is a tool for the NCAA.
- 57:36Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two thirteen
- 57:38Speaker 1: under the zone. Craig Way with you and Hemeron Parker
- 57:43Speaker 1: as well, and I'm glad to have you.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Along on this chili.
- 57:51Speaker 1: It's not chili, it's cold. It's just out now cold outside.
- 57:57Speaker 1: It is thirty three degrees. We've reached the high, and
- 58:03Speaker 1: so this is the warmest it will be today the
- 58:08Speaker 1: rest of the day and the next hour will drop
- 58:10Speaker 1: one degree. In the next two hours will drop two degrees.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Eventually it will fall to nineteen degrees tomorrow morning, nineteen degrees,
- 58:21Speaker 1: so that again nineteen nineteen by tomorrow morning. It'll be
- 58:26Speaker 1: nineteen at sunrise seven o six am tomorrow, and then
- 58:31Speaker 1: it will gradually warm up to thirty eight degrees by
- 58:38Speaker 1: tomorrow afternoon, and it'll be slightly cooler on Friday morning,
- 58:44Speaker 1: cloud moving in, and then it'd be like thirty six
- 58:48Speaker 1: for a high.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Friday.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Saturday, there's a chance of some rain, but the high
- 58:54Speaker 1: will be in the forties. And then Sunday there's another
- 58:57Speaker 1: chance of rain, but the high could be around sixty degrees.
- 59:00Speaker 2: And then next week it'll be pushing eighty. It'll be
- 59:04Speaker 2: in the mid up or soon.
- 59:05Speaker 1: My wife yesterday Kenny and Barton springs next week, Linda said,
- 59:10Speaker 1: can we just have something in the middle. So no,
- 59:13Speaker 1: we're in Texas. Grew up in this state.
- 59:17Speaker 2: You want to know what it's like. She grew up
- 59:21Speaker 2: in Dallas. She knows what the you know.
- 59:26Speaker 1: What the extremes are like in this state about wait,
- 59:29Speaker 1: fifteen minutes and all that other kind of stuff. Because
- 59:31Speaker 1: it does, it does happen. Okay, this is not gonna
- 59:37Speaker 1: shock anybody at all. But if you follow college football
- 59:44Speaker 1: and you followed the college Playoff, and the number one
- 59:49Speaker 1: reaction that came out of the College football Playoff was
- 59:53Speaker 1: that the seatings were not correct. That they should not
- 59:59Speaker 1: have given a number four seeding to Arizona State, they
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: should not have given the seeding that they've given to
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: other teams that were about what Boise as a number
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: three seed. They should not have given Boise State a
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: number three seed. And you look at it. Ultimately, the
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: number eight seed won the national championship beating the number
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: what was it six seed? I believe Notre Dame was,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: so you know, or was it seven? Seven seed because
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: they beat Georgia the two seed first. Yeah, eight beat
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: seven to win the national championship because nine was Tennessee.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: Nine was Tennessee, and eleven was SMU which played the
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: sixth seed Penn State. Off of that, so you figured
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: that there's going to be conversations with those who are
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: making the rules on this thing and making the policy
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: for college football. There's a joint meeting in New Orleans
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: between athletic directors representing their respective conferences this morning in
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: New Orleans. The guys who are speaking for these athletic
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: directors are Greg sanking the commission of the SEC, Tony Pettiti,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: the commissioner of the Big Ten, the two big power brokers, right,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: And they both said that there would seem to be
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: universal agreement that the way the teams are seated in
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: the twelve team College Football Playoff should change this fall,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: So they would have to be unanimously agreed upon by
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the ten FBFS commissioners, and Notre Dame athletic director Pete
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Bavakwa got to keep him involved.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Notre Dame that as long as they.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Qualified, Sankie said, quote, I'm prepared to vote for seeding change,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: but it has to be unanimous. Uh So, of course, again,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: this is how it went. The four highest ranked conference
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: champions are in the top four seeds in a first
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: round by It was one of the most controversial facets
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: of the format because it allowed for ninth rank Boise State,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: which won the Mountain West Conference, to earn the number
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: three seed, and for twelfth ranked Arizona State to.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Earn the number four seed.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: We just pointed that out Texas ranked third Penn State
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: ranked fourth were runners up in the respective conferences, but
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: they couldn't be seated higher than numbers five and six
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: because the top four seeds were reserved for conference champions.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: A popular suggestion to change the seeding for this fall,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: which Petiti, the commissioner of the Big Ten, said he favored,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: has been to use the Select Action Committees ranking for
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: the seeding, while still making room for the five est
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: five highest rank conference champions. In that model, the committee's
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: top four teams would earn the top four seeds and
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: first round bys, regardless of whether they were conference champions,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: which Texas would have earned the first round by had
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: that happened.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Not having the first round by did not ultimately hurt Texas,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: even though they had to go double over time to
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: beat Arizona State, but they did after they had beaten
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Clemson at home, so they won two games to get
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: to the final four. But anyway, in that model, the
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Committee's top four teams would earn the top four seeds
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: and they would earn the first round bys, regardless of
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: whether there were conference champions that would also open the door.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Ah, you know who?
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: That opens the door for Notre Dame because they can't
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: win a conference title as an independent. It to earn
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: a first round by as a four seed. So I
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: think it's probably a safe.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Bet that.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Pete Bavaqua, the athletic director for Notre Dame, would vote
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: for this because we give his team a chance to
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: earn a first round by if that, if that.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Were to happen.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: You know, Pete Leavaqua sounds like one of Kramer's friends
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: from seinfilm.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: He does.
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: Well.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: You know, there was a major League for many years.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Kurt Bavaqua, he played for the Royals, he played for
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: the Padres name. Yeah, is that like Polish? I think
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: it's like Hispanic, but I can't remember for sure. Really,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know about that. Well, Kurkpavak
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: was born in Florida, so okay, yeah, he had a
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: long major league career. And I can tell you, Cameron,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: we could never play this on the air, but I
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: have a I have a it was burned to a
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: CD for me.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: There was back in the.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Eighties Italian French origin. Okay, that makes sense, Yeah, that's
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: exactly what. That makes sense. That sounds that sounds either
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Italian or French. And also the name translates to literally
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: watch er drinker. Interesting, yeah, the Vaqua okah, yeah, okay,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: all right, yeah nice.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: So some poor dude was named the Vaqua because he
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: was probably drinking waters. Yeah, some fountain. Some dude was thirsty,
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: you know, you know, you know, we laugh. But people
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: used to get names based on certain things.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: Like there's the old joke about Native Americans and two
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: dogs bublic, you know that that kind of thing. There's that,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: you know, talking stick casino and things like that with
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Native Americans. But it was like that in the old
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: countries as well. My family genealogy way dates back. We
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: have a direct line descendancy. I've been able to see
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: it with my own eyes, traced all the way back
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: to Devonshire, England in sixteen ninety seven, when a gentleman
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: by the name of John Way had enrolled in the
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: tax rolls there in Devonshire, England. His family, sometime between
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: sixteen ninety seven and seventeen fifteen moved came across the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: ocean to what was in the colonies, the British Colonies,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: and settled in I believe it was Franklin County, Pennsylvania,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: and there were two brothers. One went out West Indiana,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: the other one ultimate or sons of the John Way
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: who came over, went down to Alamance County, North Carolina,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: and that's where it started from there. Well, anyway, the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: name way, and in those days it was spelled w
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: e y and then was I guess anglicized over time.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: But in those days the name Way descended from the
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: note that that was the family that lived out by
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: the road, out by the way, the bye way, that
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: the name Way was labeled by that family that lived
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: out by the road. A literal translation, that's what it was,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: the family that lived out by the road. The family
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: would by the way. That's the Way family because they
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: live out by the road, which in my case makes
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: perfect sense. As much traveling as I do anyway, and
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I am a man of the road. I drive on
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: my vacations and things of that nature. So that's where
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: that came from. But Bavaqua, as I started to tell you,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: this would never make airplay here, there was a CD.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I have a copy of his burned to a CD
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: for me, But it came from a cassette tape back
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: in the eighties to early nineties. Brad Sham gave it
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: to me, but the audio had been passed along to him,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: and it is a collection and an assortment of various
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: locker room interviews and out takes and things of that nature.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: You can probably guess the type of language that is
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: involved in the thing. One of those, by the way,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: is Chicago Cubs manager Jim Fry, who I think it
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: was an eighty two eighty three I had to ask.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Keith Morland gets on this incredible rant which included the
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: words eighty five percent of the world is working and
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: the rest of these blankety blanks come out here to
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: boo us, you know, Wrigley Field. The reason why that
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: all came about was that was the day that a
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Cubs fan poured a twenty four ounce Heylman's old style
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: beer onto the head of none other than Keith Morland.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: And Keith Morland went into the stands and he got
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: his he got his money's worth.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: He went in and pounded that guy.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: And so Jim Fry deflected all the stuff away from
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Keith by going on this incredibly famous rant about Cubs
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: fans and how negative and how often they were. There's
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: a lot of baseball involved there that Dallas Greenley's manager
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: of the Phillies, and there's but perhaps one of the
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: most famous is Tommy Lasorda when he's managing the Dodgers.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: There's one where he's talking about Dave Kingman hit three
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: home runs against him and drove in eight runs, and
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: you hear a reporter say, what was your opinion of
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Kingman's performance? What was my opinion game? What the bleep
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: do you think of it? And he just goes on
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: this incredible rant. But then there's another one where he
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: was accused of having his pitcher throw at Kurt Bavakua,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: and you hear him say, I think that's very bad
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: for somebody to say that. I would never I have
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: never and would never ask one of my pitchers to
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: throw at somebody. And if I did, it certainly wouldn't
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: be for a bleeping one thirty hitter like Kurt Bavaqua,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: who I would send a limo to make sure his
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: bleak bleep was in the lineup, because I would own
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that bleak bleep all day. And it's hilarious, and he's
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: talking about Kurt Blevoca. He was batting one thirty at
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: the time they hit him with a pitch, So it
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: was subject one of those locker room language things there
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: as a.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Result of that.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: So back to what I was saying about the college
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: football deal, since we got sidetracked with Ptelevakua when that happened.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: So for almost a year.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Oh by the way, you know, Sankie was asked what
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the respected conferences would like the playoff to look like
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six and beyond sinking smart men would
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: not get into the specifics.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Quote, that's something.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: We owe our colleagues first talks about the other commissioners.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I think I've been consistent in that observation. So for
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: almost a year, multiple sources in both leagues have indicated
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: a strong preference for expanding to fourteen teams beginning in
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. Sources in the SEC and Big Ten
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: have also favored a certain number of automatic bids for
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: each league, but even within each league, the remain varying
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: opinions on that. Sources in the Big Ten seen more
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: line than their desire for automatic qualifiers. A popular model
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: would include four guaranteed spots each from the Big Ten
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: in the SEC, two teams from the Big Twelve, and
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: ACC one spot for the highest G five champion and
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: one at large, which could go to Notre day Am
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: if the IVERSH were ranked high enough for inclusion.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Sanke declined to speak directly about automatic qualifiers, but he
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: did say the leagues have talked about everything regarding format and.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: They'll continue to do that. Quote. This is not a
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: new issue, he said.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Petiti, the Big TIM commissioners, said that because of the
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: way the power is divided, eventually both leagues need to
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: come to a consensus on what they want it to
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: look like moving forward. But there's no restrictions on where
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: the ideas can come from moving forward. So in other words,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: everything's on the table right now to discuss it. But
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: here's the thing they're talking. They're talking about all this
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: right now. I think we're going to see changes, and
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: I think the change is specifically the number one change
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: I'm looking for and expecting to see with the college
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: football playoff this fall will be the seeding. It will change,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: and I think they are going to award the top
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: four seeds to the top four highest ranked teams, regardless
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: of what conference A get in. I mean, if there's
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: four SEC teams, they get the top four seeds. If
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: there were four Big Ten teams, they get the top
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: four seats, the four highest ranked teams, and then they
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: would go from that on down to twelve and then
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: probably I think there's a good chance we're looking at
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: it going to fourteen teams in twenty twenty six. All right,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: coming up, we're gonna hear from Rodney Terry, Long Warn
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: men's basketball coach when we continue here on thirteen under
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: the zone. Let's hear from Long WARN's head coach Rodney Terry.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: This from his media availability yesterday, as the team navigates
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: its open date on the schedule, the bye week during
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: that and then getting ready for the trip to South Carolina.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I'll leave on Friday, and then after that, of course,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: play on Saturday. So uh uh, picking up where we
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: h left off yesterday. Uh, Rodney was asked about that
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: some of the stuff that we talk about, you know, bracketology,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: And every time I asked Rodney about it, uh, he
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: acknowledges that it's out there.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: He acknowledges that there, that he's aware of it.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: And if someone throws something in front him and take it,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: he might take a glance, but he's not really as
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: dialed into it, but he was asked if anyone on
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: the staff if that's one of the things that they
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: do is to monitor tournament projections.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: Now you know what I'm thinking. It's a it's a
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: fun time.
- 1:13:36Speaker 7: For for you guys, media and and others that that
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: pay attention to that for us, I mean, always tell
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: our guys and what we do on a regular basis
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: to live where your feet are and control what you
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: can control. You know, we can't control what's put up
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: on the projection and this and that. We can't control
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: what we do every day as a team. And then
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: practice to try to get better, uh, and you ready
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: for situations and games and prepare ourselves to try to
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: play at a level that we want to try to
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: play night in and night out.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: But we control we can control.
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: And that's that's being prepared for the next big challenge
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: in front of us. And that's a team in South
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: Carolina that's well coach, they played everybody really close, with
- 1:14:21Speaker 7: a lot of great opportunities to have won a lot
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: of big ball games. And they've got really good personnel.
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: I mean, they've got a couple of kids that won
- 1:14:32Speaker 7: in particular that's projected first round pick. So you know,
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: there's talent up and down everybody's ross and rosters in
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: this league. And every night we respect our opponent. And
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: one thing we can't control. We can control our attitudes
- 1:14:48Speaker 7: and our preparation every night. We can't control all the
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: other good stuff that goes along with with this time
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: of year.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Well, there was good stuff with the win over Kentucky,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: and so our team was asked, what does that win
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: of Kentucky last Saturday bring to the team and it's
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: ongoing preparation down the stretch.
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: Well, I think you know, anytime you you win in
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: this league, you have it for one night.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: You're losing this league, you have it for one night.
- 1:15:13Speaker 7: But if you're you're able to work the game for
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: forty minutes and and be the team that's coming off
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: a good win, you know, against the quality team in Tennessee,
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: You're you got to feel great about that.
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: But again, you only have it for one night. It
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: is on to the next challenge for us. You know,
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: we had a week when we got a chance to
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: continue to mend our bodies, try to reset button with
- 1:15:38Speaker 7: our with our mental and and uh and physical fatigue.
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: This time of year, I think that, uh, trying to
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: get all our guys back, man, I think, uh, you know,
- 1:15:50Speaker 7: anytime you go into a game and going to practice
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: you have all your guys.
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: You got to be excited about.
- 1:15:55Speaker 7: That because you know, we've got quality, depth, We've got
- 1:15:59Speaker 7: guys that again, you know, that start games for us
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: if we feel can get off the great stars for us.
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: We're also guys that we feel like when we're healthy
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: and we have all our guys can also you know,
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: keep that same level of play or even take it
- 1:16:12Speaker 7: to another level when they come into games. We just
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: need to have those bodies, you know. And we really
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: only had one game this year where we've had our
- 1:16:20Speaker 7: top ten guys available for that particular game. So I'll
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: be excited, I know our team, you know, and our
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: staff will be excited to have everybody, you know, when
- 1:16:31Speaker 7: that opportunity presents itself.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Yeah, think about that, And I mentioned it more than once,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: but it bears repeating. They've had one game one where
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: they had the entire roster available to them. That's it one,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: and they may still not have the entire roster available
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: on Saturday in Columbia depending on the state of Kenda Weaver.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: But at least the other guys are mending and getting healthier,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: and that's a good thing. Trey Johnson is largely been healthy.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: He was held out of three games in December around Christmas,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: but that was mainly precautionary. A little bit sore, but
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: mainly just tell that precautionaty And so now he's playing
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: really well. He's leading the conference in conference games, scoring
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: at twenty points per game, and he really is playing
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: with a heavy duty sense of urgency. And Rodney terror
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: has asked if tray sense of urgency has really spiked
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: up down this home stretch and what did he make
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: of his performance against Kentucky.
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: Tray's been one of those guys just that's gotten better
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: throughout the course of the season, not just from a
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: basketball standpoint, but just from a mature standpoint of being
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: in college. You know, what he does off campus, I
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: think really helps you what he does on campus.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: You know, being a guy that you know has to
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: do well from.
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: An academic standpoint, he carries over to the floor. Likewise,
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: I think he's continued to mature and being a great teammate.
- 1:18:02Speaker 7: You know, he's been a great teammate off the court,
- 1:18:04Speaker 7: but being a great teammate on the court and trusting
- 1:18:08Speaker 7: his teammates on the court has been something that I've definitely.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: Seen a growth to curve in him. He's one of
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: those guys as.
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: Well that I think over the course of the season
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: has shown people that he's more than just a score.
- 1:18:24Speaker 7: He's a guy that can also make of the guys
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: around him better sharing the basketball, you know, he can.
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: You know, he's one of those guys that's gotten better
- 1:18:33Speaker 7: with reading pick and roll, playing in two man games,
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: whether it be a step up, whether it be an
- 1:18:38Speaker 7: actual peak and roll situation, he's making those reads and
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: showing guys that he's more than a guy that just
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: kids scored the basketball. I thought he played as hard
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: as game the other night defensively, where he tried as
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: hard as he could defensively, you know, and he's learning
- 1:18:55Speaker 7: to be able.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: To play through fatigue and still be able to score
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: the ball.
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: Leading games he's exhausted, you know, energy on the defensive.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: Side of the ball as well.
- 1:19:04Speaker 7: So I think, again, just just growing as a young player, he's, uh,
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: he's shown a lot. You know, I was talking with
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: Kevin about him yesterday. Uh, you know, Kevin watches our games,
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: and he's very aware of Trey and has a great
- 1:19:19Speaker 7: relationship with him, and just talking about the maturity piece
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: from the start of the season as a freshman, and
- 1:19:25Speaker 7: as you goes you go, you get to the point
- 1:19:28Speaker 7: of where we are now, to where he's played significant minutes,
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: he's been in big situations, to where you know, he's
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: really in his sophomore season right now as a player,
- 1:19:39Speaker 7: and he's only getting better as it goes.
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: Trey has a.
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: Good basketball IQ and I think he'll continue to get
- 1:19:47Speaker 7: better as we close out this season.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: Uh, you heard him make reference to Kevin. He's talking
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: about Kevin Durant. Now coming up, we'll take a break.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: When we come back, we'll hear Rodney Terry's thoughts on
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Kevin Durant's return to Austin with the sun Spurs game
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: tomorrow night at Moody Center. We'll get to that next
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: here on thirteen under the Zone. Let's hear from Rodney.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Try There's one other thing I wanted to play from Rodney,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: and it's about the local hero coming back, Kevin Durant.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: We'll be here tomorrow night when Texas, when Texas players
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: are in attendance. I'm sure we'll be watching the Phoenix
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: Suns play the Spurs and Kad had a media availability
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: today and we're gonna hear comments from Kevin tomorrow. But
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: this is from Rodney Terry who's asked how cool it
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: is and connected he still is with Kevin.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: With Kevin Durant coming back to the Austin area.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: I think it's an ultimate opportunity for himself and for
- 1:20:46Speaker 7: the city of Austin, you know, to come out of support.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: One of our.
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: Great players that are still in the prime of his
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: career right now. You know, it's scoring over thirty thousand
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: points and one of the all time you know, scores
- 1:20:59Speaker 7: at the next level, one of all time scores at
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: the collegiate level. But to have an opportunity to come
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: back where you played collegiately and play a professional game
- 1:21:08Speaker 7: against one of the best organizations in all the professional sports,
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: in the Spurs, you can't ask for a better scenario,
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: you know. So hopefully, you know, you know, we have
- 1:21:19Speaker 7: a sellout for that ball game and people get a
- 1:21:22Speaker 7: chance to come back and show their appreciation for along
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: run great.
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: That's getting a chance to play in our building.
- 1:21:30Speaker 7: He came into practice today and watched our guys practice.
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: All of our guys are former players, not just Kdie.
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: They're all best in what we're doing as a program.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: You know, whether they got a chance to play for
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: myself or anyone on our staff or not on our staff,
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: they're always a part of what we're doing.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: But to have him come back here and be here.
- 1:21:52Speaker 7: This week and be around our guys and see our guys,
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: I mean, if you can't ask.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: Me anything better than that.
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: A lot of our guys favorite players Kevin Durrant, you know,
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: and why they chose to come to Texas was Kevin Durrant,
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: you know. So he's had an incredible impact not only
- 1:22:09Speaker 7: on our basketball program, but also on our athletic program
- 1:22:15Speaker 7: as a whole. He's an incredible ambassador for Texas Athletics.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Great great said and apparently Kevin said in the media
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: vay but we'll hear it tomorrow, but apparently one of
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the quotes was this city is primed for basketball, but
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: especially women's basketball at the highest level. This is quite
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: a compliment from Kevin about the second rang Longhorns. And
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: in case you didn't know, that's why Madison Booker Rose
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: thirty five because of KD and I know it was
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: a goal of Jeremy Rosenthal, the media relations content for Texas,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: to try to get a photo op with the two
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: of them while Kevin was in Tewn. Hopefully get that time. Yeah,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: I think he probably will. All Right, We'll be back
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: to wrap up today's edition. The program here on thirteen
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: under the Zone.
