- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 37,
- 0:02like we just heard,
- 0:04the prophet is brought by God's spirit into a valley.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And what he finds there is a place of total desolation.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Bones are scattered across the valley floor,
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: picked clean by predators,
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: bleached white by the sun,
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: and utterly dry.
- 0:29The Hebrew word used here is yavesh,
- 0:33which means something more than simply dead.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: It means desiccated, emptied of every trace of moisture and light.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: There is nothing left to decay.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: These bones are dead, dead.
- 0:55Now,
- 0:55this is not a literal place,
- 0:57just so we know,
- 0:59that Ezekiel physically visits.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: It is a prophetic vision,
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: shaped by his imagination,
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: animated by the Spirit of God,
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: and deeply rooted in the lived experience of Israel.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Because Israel, in Ezekiel's time, was feeling exactly that way.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Dead, dead.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: The nation had been broken and scattered into exile.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: The temple, well, it was in rubble.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: The land that they had once owned was gone.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And the people's own testimony is recorded in verse 11.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: It tells us exactly where they were.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Our bones are dried up and our hope is lost.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: We are cut off completely.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Ezekiel 37, 11.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: We feel dead, dead.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: They are not merely sad.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: They are not going through a rough patch.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: They believe their future has been buried.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And into that desolation, God's voice speaks directly to the prophet.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Mortal can these bones live?
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Ezekiel chapter 37 verse 3.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And Ezekiel's answer is an honest one.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: God only knows.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: we find a similar scene in John chapter 11.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Lazarus is dead, dead.
- 2:51And the text makes sure that we understand this by telling us
- 2:56that he had been dead
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: in the tomb for four days.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Not one, not two, not three, but four days dead, dead in the tomb.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: In the Jewish tradition of Jesus' day,
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: and in the practical experience of physicians,
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: so they say in that era,
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: someone might seem to be dead for a day or two and then recover.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Not quite sure how that's the case, but that was the belief.
- 3:29But after three days,
- 3:31and certainly after four,
- 3:34that person was not ever coming back.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And into that situation,
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Jesus comes to Lazarus,
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: dressed in death clothes,
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: laid in a rock tomb with a stone rolled across it at the entrance.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Lazarus was definitely not coming back.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: All hope was lost.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: So,
- 4:00just as Israel in Ezekiel's vision was feeling that their
- 4:04future had died and been
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: buried,
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Mary and Martha were feeling the same thing.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Their brother was gone.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Their future with him was gone.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And when Jesus arrives, Martha's response mirrors Ezekiel's.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: She says, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Is there any hope left?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Only God knows.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: But then she adds something extraordinary.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Even now, I know that God will give you whatever you ask.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Even now.
- 4:48standing at the tomb,
- 4:50four days passed,
- 4:52hope,
- 4:54that is faith that has not flinched.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: It has not finished.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: It is faith that is not dead, dead.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: We have all been in similar places, I think.
- 5:10We have all stood in our own valley of dry bones looking at
- 5:17something in our lives
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: or in the life of someone we love and felt the weight of that phrase,
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: dead,
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: dead.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: A relationship, a dream, a season of health, a sense of purpose.
- 5:34There are moments when we look at what lies before us and all
- 5:39we can honestly say
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: is,
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know what can happen here.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: God only knows.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And that answer, as it turns out, is exactly the right one.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Because it does not slam the door shut in despair,
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: and it does not pretend that there is a certainty that we do not have.
- 6:10It says,
- 6:11I cannot see a way through this,
- 6:15but I believe that God might see.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I remember a trip in Israel.
- 6:24I was lucky enough while I was in Sicily to go to Israel with
- 6:29some friends of mine,
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Roy and Florence Crider.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: They had been missionaries in Israel for 40 years.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: And we were standing at the tomb of Lazarus.
- 6:43And I will never forget him telling this story about Lazarus'
- 6:49resurrection as we
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: looked down into the tomb,
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: 24 steps down into the darkness.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And he reminded us that when Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb,
- 7:09Lazarus did not shuffle up the 24 steps to the entrance in his
- 7:16grave clothes.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Instead,
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: somehow,
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: when Jesus called him forth,
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Lazarus was picked up off the stone,
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: propelled 24 steps up to the very top of the tomb entrance,
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: and set steps
- 7:38At the tomb entrance,
- 7:39wrapped in his grave clothes,
- 7:40not able to move at all,
- 7:42like a mummy.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I do have to wonder what he must have thought.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, he'd been in heaven, presumably, for four days.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And as we know, four days are like a thousand to God.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: So maybe he'd been there for 4,000 years.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Hanging out with Moses and Abraham, chewing on some manitos.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Ruth and Esther sitting over there somewhere.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Ladies tea, maybe.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Ezekiel playing a jazz snare drum with some femur bones.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: And he's hanging out there in heaven all of a sudden.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: He says, hey, Lazarus, come back.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden he's like, whoa, what just happened?
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: What's all this about?
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Here I am again.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: We don't really know what he thought.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: That was just sort of a silly aside.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: From these two stories,
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Ezekiel and Lazarus' resurrection,
- 8:52it would be easy for us to draw the lesson from both that God
- 8:57is powerful enough to
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: bring dead things back to life.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: That God can restore what is lost.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: That God can breathe life into whatever has been left barren.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: And those, of course, are true and appropriate takeaways.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: But if we stop there,
- 9:22I think we miss something important that both of these texts
- 9:26are pressing on us.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Look at what happens in Ezekiel chapter 37.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: God does not speak to the bones directly.
- 9:36God speaks to the prophet first,
- 9:38and God asks the prophet to speak,
- 9:41prophesy to these bones.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Ezekiel must open his mouth before anything moves.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: He must call the spirit, the ruach, before the breath comes.
- 9:54The prophet's obedient voice is the instrument through which
- 9:58the spirit enters the valley.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: God does not work around Ezekiel.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: God works through him.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: And look at what happens at Lazarus' tomb.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Jesus asks the disciples to roll away the stone.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: They had to do the physical work.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Jesus speaks to Lazarus, and Lazarus does come out.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: But Lazarus is still bound, still wrapped from death.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: head to toe in death's clothing.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: And Jesus does not unwrap him.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: He turns to the disciples standing there and says, Unbind him.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: You let him go.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Jesus raises Lazarus, but the disciples unwrap him.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: The resurrection is entirely the work of Christ,
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: but the release into new life requires human hands.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: The pattern in both stories is the same.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: God is the one who raises.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: The Spirit is the one who breathes.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: Resurrection belongs to God alone.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: But in both stories,
- 11:21God refuses to complete the work of restoration without human
- 11:28participation.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: It would not be too far-fetched to say from these texts and others...
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: That God needs our help.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Now,
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: whether or not that sits comfortably with your theology,
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: it seems to be what the Scripture shows us.
- 11:50God always draws on human beings to participate in His
- 11:58redemptive process.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Refusing to let restoration be something that only happens when
- 12:06to people,
- 12:07rather than something that happens through them and among them.
- 12:14And friends,
- 12:15this is the role that the Church of Jesus Christ is to fulfill
- 12:20in our day.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: We are not the source of resurrection.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: We do not manufacture hope or generate new life out of our own efforts.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: But we are called again and again to go to the valleys,
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: to stand among the dry bones in our community,
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: for our community,
- 12:49and open our mouths to speak words of life where despair has
- 12:55had the final say.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: To call the Spirit into desolate places.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: And when the Spirit moves,
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: when someone begins to stir back towards life,
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: we are the ones who are told to unbind them.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: To help them out of raised clothes.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Do not let them,
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: those that are newly living,
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: to be tangled in what death has wrapped around them.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: We are asked the same question.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Can these bones around us live?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Once upon a time, we might have said...
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: God only knows.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: But now, we can proclaim, yes, they can.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Because we know God.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: And because we know God and we trust God, we will speak.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: We will call.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: We will roll away whatever stone we are able to move.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: And when the living walk out still bound,
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: we will reach towards them with our own hands and begin to set them free.
