- 0:02Speaker 1: Everything I don't fill up.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Don't you worry about the way I'm packed.
- 0:12Speaker 1: All I care about is getting back for you or soon.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm getting back here brooking Tuesday. That's George straight for
- 0:31Speaker 2: the King.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'll be your particular reason for this particular selection today
- 0:38Speaker 1: we're coming.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Back with one of George streets.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Patty number one's carrying your love?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Would you be?
- 0:43Speaker 2: And who knows?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Maybe some players who are going to be on the
- 0:46Speaker 1: move in Major.
- 0:47Speaker 4: League Baseball in these next few days will feel this
- 0:50Speaker 4: way about their ball clubs.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Maybe they won't.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Grey Good, I was wondering.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I knew they had to be meaning behind that.
- 0:57Speaker 1: The man who can best speak to what's going on
- 0:59Speaker 1: in baseball certainly is our friend r MLB inside from
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Chicago White Sox front office team watching new joints, who,
- 1:05Speaker 1: by the way, sports a cowboy hat better than just
- 1:09Speaker 1: about anybody I know.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I've seen you wearing the hat quite a bit lately.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Do you buy by regular practice, wear your big straw
- 1:20Speaker 1: cowboy hat when you're just out watching a game, watching players?
- 1:26Speaker 4: When I'm not in Chicago most nights, I have my
- 1:28Speaker 4: cowboy hat on. I just got a brand New American hat,
- 1:32Speaker 4: which is about four hundred dollars.
- 1:34Speaker 3: It's my favorite hat in the world.
- 1:35Speaker 4: But the Dominican Republic, most amateur games, most minor league
- 1:39Speaker 4: ballparks got mark Cowboy hat.
- 1:41Speaker 3: On at all time.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I bet you they love you in the Dominican when
- 1:43Speaker 1: you got when you're sporting at beauty huh.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 4: And it's funny because every September, when when we get
- 1:50Speaker 4: into felt season, the first person that says, hey, I
- 1:54Speaker 4: really like your hat, I give it to them. And
- 1:56Speaker 4: that last year. Last year it was the front desk
- 1:59Speaker 4: Lady South in Indiana. I was at a Notre Dame
- 2:01Speaker 4: game and she's, man, I love that hat, and when
- 2:04Speaker 4: I gave it to her, she just couldn't believe it.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And so it's kind of an annual tradition every September.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know what else is a tradition?
- 2:11Speaker 1: You're you're a big Notre Dame fan, as has been
- 2:13Speaker 1: well established on the program. Would you think about the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Fighting Irish announcement today? That deal was so fi the
- 2:18Speaker 1: patches on the uniforms twenty million a year probably on
- 2:22Speaker 1: a six year deal.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, huge news for the program. I mean, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 4: coming off losing the National Championship Game two years ago,
- 2:31Speaker 4: and then the money that they were able to receive,
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, being independent from those games, and then you
- 2:36Speaker 4: attack on another twenty million a year in the patch deal.
- 2:40Speaker 4: They're doing quite okay in the in the financials at
- 2:43Speaker 4: Notre Dame right now.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm going to start off with a little bit of
- 2:51Speaker 1: what we've done in the past, and that is to
- 2:53Speaker 1: beat the dead horse about VLO. But I'm taking it
- 2:56Speaker 1: from a little bit different perspective because of an article
- 2:58Speaker 1: by our mutual good Tim Kirchin, who I've known since
- 3:02Speaker 1: he was writing for the Dallas Morning News back in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the eighties, a great guy, basically the senior baseball writer
- 3:08Speaker 1: there for ESPN, and he.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Wrote a piece today.
- 3:11Speaker 1: There was a piece that came out today about why
- 3:16Speaker 1: major league hitters are being hit by pitches more than ever.
- 3:21Speaker 2: There was a game this season.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It was on May twenty six, one day where twenty
- 3:26Speaker 1: three batters were hit in one day. Last year there
- 3:31Speaker 1: was a day where twenty nine was the highest of
- 3:33Speaker 1: any single day in Major League history. And so he
- 3:38Speaker 1: posts the question says, why is this happening? Why are
- 3:42Speaker 1: there fewer hits and more hit batters, and Bryce Harper said,
- 3:46Speaker 1: pitchers are hunting velo and spin over strikes. And I
- 3:49Speaker 1: know we've had a lot of conversations about vilo and spin.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It may not be as simple as that, but that
- 3:55Speaker 1: has something to do with it, right, With more emphasis
- 3:58Speaker 1: on velocity these days and more or more guys getting
- 4:00Speaker 1: hit by pitches.
- 4:02Speaker 4: One nd percent, that would be number one. Number two
- 4:05Speaker 4: would be the way that hitters train Now it's like
- 4:08Speaker 4: you stand your ground in the box. There's no more
- 4:11Speaker 4: moving in the box. And back in the day, you
- 4:13Speaker 4: would have pictures that would try to raise a hitter's hands,
- 4:16Speaker 4: move their hips, move their feet, you know, Bob Gibson,
- 4:19Speaker 4: Don Drysdale, Tom sever Nolan Ryan, those were guys that
- 4:23Speaker 4: were that were historic in you know, making a hitter uncomfortable.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Now you know, you've got so much body armor. Now
- 4:30Speaker 4: you got the armor on the ankle, the armor on
- 4:32Speaker 4: the elbows, the armor on the shoulders. That you know,
- 4:35Speaker 4: you got the hand pad that hitters are less and
- 4:38Speaker 4: less worried about getting hit by the pitch, get on
- 4:42Speaker 4: base the best way you can and.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And when you have, you know, pitchers that.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Are chasing velocity and are chasing spin. You're gonna have
- 4:49Speaker 4: a lot more hip batsmen. So it's a combination of
- 4:51Speaker 4: those three things for me.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Toward that end.
- 4:54Speaker 1: As you point out in Kerchin's article, he said, logically,
- 4:58Speaker 1: if a hitter isn't seeing as many pitches on the
- 5:00Speaker 1: inside part of the plate, he's going to move closer
- 5:03Speaker 1: to the plate to who can better cover the outside part.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And hitters all over the game are diving across the
- 5:08Speaker 1: plate to get to the ball that's tossed away from them.
- 5:11Speaker 1: The more they dive across, the more likely they'll get hit.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So some of it's just following the routina what the
- 5:16Speaker 1: pitcher's doing if he's trying to pitch them away.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Correct, no question, and you know your Dono vent Tura,
- 5:22Speaker 4: Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens. Those are probably the last three
- 5:27Speaker 4: guys that really were.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Intentional about pitching in.
- 5:30Speaker 4: And I truly believe that as an organization, if you
- 5:33Speaker 4: took the philosophy we're going to pitch in and the
- 5:36Speaker 4: reputation of that gets in, I think that here's what
- 5:39Speaker 4: would they be a little bit more uncomfortable when they
- 5:42Speaker 4: get in the box. But just the way the hitters
- 5:44Speaker 4: train the guard that they have, and the chase for
- 5:48Speaker 4: our leade veilosity has been the main culprit of all
- 5:51Speaker 4: of it.
- 5:51Speaker 1: One more thing on this and then we'll move on
- 5:53Speaker 1: to Gates. But there was a fascinating quote that Kirchin
- 5:56Speaker 1: had his article from the Mariners catcher Mitch Garver. He said, quote,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and talk about pictures. We're asking guys to throw as
- 6:05Speaker 1: hard as they can to a location they can't throw
- 6:07Speaker 1: it to with a pitch they don't know how to throw.
- 6:10Speaker 1: They're told, hey, a sinker would look good in your hand,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and they take it into the game that night and
- 6:14Speaker 1: it goes right into a hitter's hands. Because that's that's
- 6:17Speaker 1: the biggest concern incident for guys getting hit. We saw
- 6:21Speaker 1: Junior Cavanarow get hit in the game Fortune in the
- 6:24Speaker 1: All Star Game. Fortunately the x rays were negative. But
- 6:29Speaker 1: the biggest fear, other than getting hit in the head,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and even that you're wearing a helmet, the biggest fear
- 6:34Speaker 1: is getting hit in the hands and a digit that
- 6:36Speaker 1: could break and put you on the injured list, isn't
- 6:38Speaker 1: it no question?
- 6:40Speaker 4: And and in today's information where there's so much information
- 6:44Speaker 4: and data on the pictures, like every pitcher is trying
- 6:48Speaker 4: to come up with a little something new just to
- 6:50Speaker 4: show hitters, and that's where hitters can get hurt and
- 6:54Speaker 4: even an instant in the last couple of weeks, I
- 6:57Speaker 4: know of Major League pictures that have had that outings,
- 7:00Speaker 4: and they've taken their three or four pitch repertoire and
- 7:03Speaker 4: turned it into five or six pitches just to give
- 7:06Speaker 4: the hitters, you know, even a small percentage of a
- 7:08Speaker 4: different look for the sake of being able to work
- 7:12Speaker 4: through a lineup twice. And so it's really all a
- 7:14Speaker 4: combination of what's going on.
- 7:17Speaker 1: With this Talking baseball with Geene Watson here on thirteen hundreds.
- 7:20Speaker 1: All right, let's jump into divisional outlook and looking at things.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Last week we talked a lot about the Red Sox,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and they won eighteen of twenty. Now after they had
- 7:32Speaker 1: their fifteen game winning streaks. Now they're actually five above
- 7:35Speaker 1: five hundred. They're seven games back in the American League East,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but they're in the number two.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Wild card spot.
- 7:42Speaker 1: The number one wild card spot is held down by
- 7:45Speaker 1: the Yankees. Tampa Bay is still leading that wild leading
- 7:50Speaker 1: the American League East race by two and a half games.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Is it sustainable for the race to win the East,
- 7:55Speaker 1: or do you see the Yankees overtaking them or even
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Red Sox coming from way off the pace to
- 8:00Speaker 1: catch them.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I think in the case of the Red Sox, what
- 8:04Speaker 4: they've done is absolutely remarkable on the run that they've had.
- 8:07Speaker 4: You know, they just traded away calmly early for me
- 8:10Speaker 4: from Washington. Who's going to give them some right handed production?
- 8:13Speaker 4: You know in that ballpark fifty one percent pull rate
- 8:16Speaker 4: with the Green Monster, it has a chance to impact
- 8:19Speaker 4: that lineup a little bit. But he got hit in
- 8:21Speaker 4: this first game, and so who knows how long he's
- 8:23Speaker 4: going to be out the Yankees, I mean, just the
- 8:25Speaker 4: health of the club is really really concerning. Is Aaron
- 8:29Speaker 4: Judge going to be back this year? Very questionable? Gim
- 8:33Speaker 4: Carlos Stanton, the injuries that they've taken to the rotation,
- 8:36Speaker 4: getting everybody healthy, but how long will that sustain Tampa?
- 8:40Speaker 4: They just they just do it right, and they've got
- 8:43Speaker 4: the system. If they want to push in and go
- 8:45Speaker 4: get a frontline starter, they have the players in their
- 8:48Speaker 4: minor league system to do so. And I think that
- 8:50Speaker 4: it's going to be They've got a chance to really
- 8:52Speaker 4: pull away in this division.
- 8:53Speaker 3: If they do something at the deadline.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Interesting, Okay, in the center of your ball club, the
- 8:58Speaker 1: White Socks continues to be the story of the fifty
- 9:02Speaker 1: five and fifty right now a game and a half up,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and we'll get more into trade deadline possibilities here in
- 9:09Speaker 1: a minute. But in terms of the thinking is hasn't
- 9:15Speaker 1: transitioned as far as you know. Do you have a
- 9:19Speaker 1: feel for if your ball club has made that transition
- 9:22Speaker 1: from what was a selling ball club in the past
- 9:26Speaker 1: into being a buyer coming up before the trade deadline
- 9:29Speaker 1: or neither standing back?
- 9:32Speaker 4: So funny our scouting director told me this morning. He goes,
- 9:35Speaker 4: I remember last year when the draft ended, or before
- 9:37Speaker 4: the draft started, you said to me, have a great
- 9:40Speaker 4: draft because we're going to be trading all of them
- 9:42Speaker 4: next year because we're going to be built a win
- 9:44Speaker 4: And I don't even remember the conversation, but he brought
- 9:47Speaker 4: it up to me. But yes, I mean, we build
- 9:48Speaker 4: out our room board and most of the time it's
- 9:52Speaker 4: your major league players that you're going to be selling
- 9:54Speaker 4: off with the prospects from other organizations. And that's in
- 9:56Speaker 4: complete reverse. This year, we have, you know, major league rental.
- 10:00Speaker 4: We have controllable major league players, you know, and just
- 10:03Speaker 4: players the targets that are going to help our major
- 10:06Speaker 4: league team win in the second half.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And and you know, we we've.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Tried to inject energy into this ball club all year
- 10:12Speaker 4: long at pivotal points and it's more to this point.
- 10:15Speaker 4: And so as the deadline approaches next week, we'll continue
- 10:18Speaker 4: to examine, you know, where we're at and what makes
- 10:20Speaker 4: sense as far as adding to the team. But the
- 10:23Speaker 4: real problem right now is that, you know, there's still
- 10:26Speaker 4: a lot of teams that don't know if they're buyers
- 10:28Speaker 4: are sellers. You've got some teams that want to be
- 10:30Speaker 4: buyers and sellers. And then you've got, you know, the
- 10:33Speaker 4: Anaheim Angels that have arguably two of the best pitching
- 10:37Speaker 4: targets on the board. And what's that acquisition costs going
- 10:40Speaker 4: to be? Are they even really going to trade those guys?
- 10:43Speaker 4: And so the starting pitching market I think will move slower.
- 10:48Speaker 4: You've got Trevor Rodgers, You've got Gosman, You've got Soriano,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you've got det Mers, You've got the Mariners pitchers that
- 10:56Speaker 4: could be available. So I think the starting pitching market
- 10:59Speaker 4: is going to a little move a little bit slower.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Probably into Sunday night. And then you've got a number
- 11:04Speaker 4: of rental relievers that are one of your guys that
- 11:06Speaker 4: you have a chance to improve the underbelly of your
- 11:09Speaker 4: bullpen with. So it's going to be really interesting. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 4: who fires the first shot and steps out and says,
- 11:15Speaker 4: you know, we're going to make a trade to help
- 11:16Speaker 4: our team now, and then what the movement is from there?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Is it safe to say? Uh? And and I know
- 11:23Speaker 2: you're very close to a J.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Hinch that the Tigers still may have not yet decided.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Whether they're buyers or sellers.
- 11:30Speaker 1: They've dropped three in a row, they're they're six back
- 11:33Speaker 1: in the division race, so they're not entirely out of
- 11:36Speaker 1: the division race. In the wild card race, they're four
- 11:39Speaker 1: and a half back as well. And of course everybody's
- 11:42Speaker 1: talking about Scoo Ball and whether the Tigers would be
- 11:46Speaker 1: willing to give him up and uh and do a
- 11:49Speaker 1: big sale. Do you think they're still evaluating that part
- 11:52Speaker 1: of it right now, whether or not there's still planning
- 11:55Speaker 1: to buy or sell?
- 11:57Speaker 3: I really do. I think I think the.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Players on these teams that are undecided understand what's on
- 12:02Speaker 4: the online right now going into the weekend, and they
- 12:05Speaker 4: understand that they have to play really well to get
- 12:08Speaker 4: the front offices to believe that their contenders. But the
- 12:11Speaker 4: other thing is is is a team that wants Reed Detmers,
- 12:16Speaker 4: a Trek Scoogle, George Kirby, a Jose Soriano like them
- 12:22Speaker 4: stepping out and saying, Okay, we're going to be aggressive
- 12:24Speaker 4: and go get the player could also factor in because
- 12:27Speaker 4: even a team that says we're not going to trade
- 12:30Speaker 4: this guy now, if the right team steps up and says, hey,
- 12:33Speaker 4: here's the four players will do, I think you've got
- 12:36Speaker 4: a chance to have more activity than what you think
- 12:38Speaker 4: with some of these frontline start.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to ask you about that about another
- 12:41Speaker 1: team in a moment, but first let's get your eval
- 12:44Speaker 1: The American League West Rangers just won that big series
- 12:47Speaker 1: of the Mariners. It took three to four from Seattle.
- 12:49Speaker 1: They won the season series from Seattle. Obviously, if that
- 12:53Speaker 1: comes down it may not mean anything, but if they
- 12:55Speaker 1: wind up tied for the division title or a playoff spot,
- 12:59Speaker 1: they have the tiebreaker there. And the Asters are two
- 13:01Speaker 1: back of the mariner As, still just two and a
- 13:03Speaker 1: half back. You said last week, you figured this thing
- 13:05Speaker 1: is probably going to go all the way to the wire.
- 13:08Speaker 1: How do you see it in the short term Right now?
- 13:10Speaker 1: With the Rangers starting to get things.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Together, I think this is a big weekend for them
- 13:15Speaker 4: in Tampa Bay. I think they've got to play really
- 13:17Speaker 4: well against a team that's a division leader, that's expected
- 13:20Speaker 4: to make a deep run into the playoffs. And so
- 13:23Speaker 4: I think that with limited resources financially, I think that
- 13:26Speaker 4: they're going to look at it and say, we got
- 13:28Speaker 4: to play really well this weekend and measure up. And
- 13:30Speaker 4: if not, I think there's going to be some examination
- 13:32Speaker 4: as to, you know, potentially being buyers and sellers at
- 13:35Speaker 4: the deadline.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Okay, all right, visiting with team Watson here, all right,
- 13:38Speaker 1: let me jump to the National League and in the East,
- 13:40Speaker 1: one of those teams that you're talking about, I think
- 13:44Speaker 1: could be that would have to be included in that
- 13:48Speaker 1: where do we stand with our evaluation would be the
- 13:51Speaker 1: Nationals because here's a team that's still in the thick
- 13:54Speaker 1: of the fight of the wildcard, but it's kind of
- 13:58Speaker 1: seeped out that both James Wood and CJ. Abrams would
- 14:02Speaker 1: be available perhaps, but you're probably talking about backing up
- 14:06Speaker 1: the brinks truck in terms of prospects to get them.
- 14:09Speaker 2: How about your thoughts on the Nationals.
- 14:13Speaker 4: I think that's also going to depend on what the
- 14:15Speaker 4: Angels do with zach Netto. I think that that if
- 14:18Speaker 4: they decide to move zach netto that CJ. Abrams market,
- 14:22Speaker 4: what you have right now is everybody evaluating the starting
- 14:25Speaker 4: pitching market, the reliever market, the shortstop market, the right
- 14:28Speaker 4: handed bat market, the catching market, and ranking those players
- 14:31Speaker 4: out and then just staying in touch with the clubs
- 14:35Speaker 4: hourly to see where. I mean, I make about fifteen
- 14:38Speaker 4: calls every morning to clubs like, Okay, where are we
- 14:40Speaker 4: at right now with it? Well, you know, we've got
- 14:42Speaker 4: fourteen teams in If you want to shoot some names over,
- 14:45Speaker 4: feel free, But we haven't decided with the direction we're
- 14:48Speaker 4: going to go. So truthfully, it's going to be the
- 14:50Speaker 4: teams that feel like especially in the American League this.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Year, where it is wide open.
- 14:55Speaker 4: I mean the nationally, I think everybody kind of feels
- 14:58Speaker 4: like it's the Dodgers in the Phillies and those are
- 15:01Speaker 4: the really good teams in the American League. Any team
- 15:04Speaker 4: in the American League could be any other team in
- 15:06Speaker 4: a five or seven game series, and so the teams
- 15:09Speaker 4: that are aggressive and want to step out and make
- 15:12Speaker 4: some move with their prospects and have a chance to
- 15:13Speaker 4: get some big prizes in the deadline.
- 15:15Speaker 1: All right, let me ask about two National League teams
- 15:18Speaker 1: who may wind up being at least in the conversation
- 15:23Speaker 1: with one another. I watched the Pirates come from behind
- 15:26Speaker 1: winn of the Diamondbacks last night. The Pirates right now
- 15:30Speaker 1: are tied for third with Arizona for that third and
- 15:33Speaker 1: final wildcard spot. Nationals just one back out of that
- 15:37Speaker 1: Cardinals a game and a half back, Padres a game
- 15:39Speaker 1: and a half back Marlin's two backs. So this is
- 15:42Speaker 1: probably a race that's going to go all the way
- 15:44Speaker 1: to the wire with the Cubs and Phillies right now
- 15:45Speaker 1: holding down the top two spots as wildcards.
- 15:48Speaker 2: But it has been brought up that.
- 15:52Speaker 1: In a game where it's kind of a standoff, that
- 15:55Speaker 1: the Pirates, if they consider themselves a true contender, and
- 15:59Speaker 1: they've got a good lineup, as you know, they're there,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and they've got good starting pitching, led of course by schemes,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but that the bullpen might be the real weak spot. Now,
- 16:08Speaker 1: they got good effort out of the leander product of
- 16:10Speaker 1: Mason Montgomery the last two nights, but uh that that
- 16:15Speaker 1: they might really be hunting a closer enter the Padres,
- 16:20Speaker 1: who supposedly are right there on the cusp of whether
- 16:24Speaker 1: they're buyers or sellers, and none other than Mason Miller's
- 16:28Speaker 1: name has come up. Do you do you see a
- 16:31Speaker 1: possibility where the Podres might decide, even as aggressive as
- 16:35Speaker 1: aj Preller has been in the past, to decide, yes,
- 16:39Speaker 1: we need to look toward the future, and Miller goes
- 16:42Speaker 1: on the market, and then maybe a team like the
- 16:44Speaker 1: Pirates goes after them.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I think what's going to determine that is, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 4: do you have new new ownership in San Diego and
- 16:50Speaker 4: I don't think there's been to transfer from the old
- 16:53Speaker 4: to the new, and so you've got a collective philosophy
- 16:57Speaker 4: on what you think the future should be. They sell
- 17:00Speaker 4: out every night. You start selling out your your your players,
- 17:04Speaker 4: you know it's going to affect your crowd down the stretch.
- 17:06Speaker 3: And so I think AJA is really evaluating where they are.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Do they really have a chance to beat the Dodgers
- 17:12Speaker 4: the way they sit right now? Are there additions that
- 17:15Speaker 4: they can make within their system with prospects to put
- 17:20Speaker 4: the team up there with the Dodgers, and from the
- 17:23Speaker 4: Pirates standpoint, I think you have to look at it. Okay,
- 17:25Speaker 4: if we add Mason Miller, you know what does that
- 17:27Speaker 4: do to us long term? Does do this put us
- 17:30Speaker 4: up there with the Dodgers and with the Phillies and
- 17:32Speaker 4: with the Braves?
- 17:34Speaker 3: Not sure that it does?
- 17:35Speaker 4: So do we want to make the financial investment, both
- 17:37Speaker 4: financially and with prospects to do that.
- 17:39Speaker 3: So that's what That's.
- 17:41Speaker 4: What both sides are going to be measuring down the stretch.
- 17:43Speaker 4: But I think San Diego, with the transfer of ownership,
- 17:46Speaker 4: it's going to be interesting to see what they decide collectively.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Would you think also that a team teams like the
- 17:52Speaker 1: Pirates and I'll put the Marlins in this category, two
- 17:55Speaker 1: teams for whom even reaching the postseason is deemed a
- 18:00Speaker 1: colossal improvement in the town, in the market, with their
- 18:05Speaker 1: fan base, that that might nudge them a little more
- 18:10Speaker 1: than say a Cardinals or somebody else that has been
- 18:14Speaker 1: a regular postseason participants that might not be as willing
- 18:19Speaker 1: to make that push to go all in, even if
- 18:22Speaker 1: it only means getting in as a wild card, than
- 18:25Speaker 1: taking your chances.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Once you get to the postseason no, I think you.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Can add the Chicago LIFEOCE to that list. Every fan
- 18:33Speaker 4: base is different, the pressure from the media, the want
- 18:37Speaker 4: from the fan base, where ownership stands. I mean, Jerry
- 18:40Speaker 4: reinsdorfrom ninety years old. We want to win for Jerry
- 18:43Speaker 4: right now. There's no sense in waiting. What are we
- 18:46Speaker 4: waiting for? And so I think that factors in severely
- 18:50Speaker 4: in the approach you're going to take.
- 18:52Speaker 3: But I still think you.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Have to measure every target that you have on the
- 18:56Speaker 4: board and does it make sense to make that trade
- 18:59Speaker 4: to invest. You know, we've done in a great job
- 19:02Speaker 4: in the last three years of building up our minor
- 19:04Speaker 4: league system through the draft and with international talent. Okay,
- 19:07Speaker 4: how much do we want the best for a potential?
- 19:10Speaker 4: You know, alcs run at it. You know, do we
- 19:13Speaker 4: really think we can get to the World Series? Do
- 19:15Speaker 4: we have that kind of team? And everybody says, just
- 19:18Speaker 4: get in and anything can happen.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I don't believe that.
- 19:20Speaker 4: You got to You got to be super talented, and
- 19:22Speaker 4: you've got to be playing extremely well, be very healthy. Uh,
- 19:26Speaker 4: and you got to be your your team's got to
- 19:28Speaker 4: be clicking on all sillners. I mean, look at the
- 19:30Speaker 4: Dodgers last year. What it took for them to win
- 19:33Speaker 4: their second World Championship.
- 19:34Speaker 3: A ball getting hinged in a.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Wall, a base running air, a home run by mcgil Rojas.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I mean three things that you would never think would
- 19:42Speaker 4: happen for them to just to win the World Series
- 19:45Speaker 4: and so to get in and anything can happen. Philosophy
- 19:48Speaker 4: doesn't fly with me. You got to You got to
- 19:50Speaker 4: build your roster from the top down the very best
- 19:52Speaker 4: that you can be playing well at the end of September,
- 19:56Speaker 4: stay healthy and perform at your highest level in the
- 19:58Speaker 4: biggest moment.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Let me ask you something.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You've been in Chicago for a couple of years now,
- 20:02Speaker 1: but you're well acquainted with the town, the structure, and
- 20:05Speaker 1: how for decades and generations it's kind of been a
- 20:08Speaker 1: cubby's town, that sort of thing. Is the town getting
- 20:11Speaker 1: behind the south Siders now? Is it getting behind the
- 20:14Speaker 1: White sows?
- 20:17Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you this.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I have for three years I've been here, and I
- 20:21Speaker 4: will leave tickets for my family from time to time.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I'm getting hit for sixteen to twenty tickets at night
- 20:26Speaker 4: right now and restaurant owners, family friends flying in. I
- 20:30Speaker 4: had sixteen people fly in from Dallas, California, Nashville last night.
- 20:35Speaker 3: They're all here today.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So a restaurant owners, hey, come see it play, and
- 20:39Speaker 4: you never hear from them, and then all of a sudden,
- 20:41Speaker 4: you hear from all of them at once and you're
- 20:42Speaker 4: leaving twenty tickets. So to say that the city is
- 20:45Speaker 4: not on fire for both teams, and it's so funny.
- 20:48Speaker 4: We were talking about this this morning. I had breakfast
- 20:50Speaker 4: with Jake.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Siriata, who works for the Cubs. The fan bases are
- 20:54Speaker 3: so completely different.
- 20:55Speaker 4: That's what makes it so great, is just completely different
- 20:58Speaker 4: fan bases.
- 20:59Speaker 3: But both of them are right. It's well known that
- 21:01Speaker 3: I'm a.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Lifelong Cume fan, but to see the city on fire
- 21:04Speaker 4: right now for baseball is really cool.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Hey, It's not lost on me and probably not lost
- 21:09Speaker 1: on the city of big shoulders there in the Windy
- 21:12Speaker 1: City that this year GINO. This year is the one
- 21:16Speaker 1: hundred and twentieth anniversary of the only time the Cubs
- 21:20Speaker 1: and White Sox met one another in the World Series,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and the major underdog, the White Sox, known as the
- 21:28Speaker 1: hitless Wonders, won that World Series of the heavily favored
- 21:32Speaker 1: Cubs in six games. Can you imagine what that city
- 21:35Speaker 1: would be like if the Cubs and White Socks met
- 21:36Speaker 1: in the World Series.
- 21:38Speaker 4: We still have a series with them, so it's going
- 21:40Speaker 4: to be interesting to see how that series goes. The
- 21:44Speaker 4: city is going to be on fire, Tickets are going
- 21:46Speaker 4: to be crazy, and I'm gonna have.
- 21:47Speaker 3: To tell all my family and friends know on that one.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Okay, sounds like the Ohio State game for me down here, Hey, Geno,
- 21:55Speaker 1: I appreciate the time. As always, We'll look forward to
- 21:57Speaker 1: doing it again next week. Next Tuesday. When we do it, Gino,
- 22:01Speaker 1: we'll get your review of what happened and what didn't
- 22:05Speaker 1: happen with the trade deadline.
- 22:07Speaker 2: We'll look forward to that next Tuesday, all.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Right, Craig, looking forward to take care of Thanks.
- 22:11Speaker 1: All right, that's Stein Watson from the Chicago White Sox
- 22:14Speaker 1: front office. More coming up here on Sports Radio AM
- 22:16Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
