Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two and
- 0:19Speaker 1: forty nine, and today in the show, we are breaking
- 0:22Speaker 1: down to successful rout hunts to hear about the ups
- 0:25Speaker 1: and downs, the good things, the bad things, the lessons learned,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and what we can all take from them to help
- 0:31Speaker 1: us on our own hunts coming up in these next
- 0:33Speaker 1: couple of weeks. All right, welcome to the Wired to
- 0:47Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X. And today
- 0:51Speaker 1: on the show, we have got myself, we have got
- 0:55Speaker 1: Dan nine fingers Johnson, we got my buddy Ross Hoss,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and um, we're supposed to have our friend Corey, but
- 1:04Speaker 1: he's he's right now playing hard to get He's he's
- 1:06Speaker 1: not responding to our phone call. So Corey may or
- 1:10Speaker 1: may not be with us at a later point in
- 1:11Speaker 1: this episode. But the basic reason why this crew is
- 1:15Speaker 1: here today is because we want to talk about rut
- 1:17Speaker 1: hunting success stories. Because Dan, you've got a success or
- 1:21Speaker 1: don't you? Yeah, I'm I'm pretty happy in a way
- 1:27Speaker 1: how everything turned out. Yes, yes, and Ross, You've got
- 1:30Speaker 1: a success story, don't you. Yeah, I got done pretty
- 1:34Speaker 1: pretty quick this year, which which was great, but I'm
- 1:37Speaker 1: kind of wishing I could spend a little more time
- 1:39Speaker 1: and staying with the book. Take. Yeah, that's kind of
- 1:42Speaker 1: kind of ridiculous how quickly you started and ended your season. Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think I'll ever do that again. Man.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And um and I've got I've got a very interesting
- 1:53Speaker 1: set of RUTT stories too that I wanted to talk about. Um,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I don't have the happy ending yet, but I still
- 1:59Speaker 1: think it's possible. So I figured that could be our
- 2:02Speaker 1: game plan. We can walk through our hunts that happened
- 2:05Speaker 1: over this past week. We all have some pretty interesting
- 2:07Speaker 1: things that happened, and I think we can learn some
- 2:11Speaker 1: things from those things too. So pull some lessons learned
- 2:13Speaker 1: out of each one of these success stories. Understanding what's
- 2:17Speaker 1: the setup that worked for you guys, Understanding how you
- 2:19Speaker 1: want about it, why you think you're successful. Um, I'm
- 2:23Speaker 1: thinking that should be a good way to kind of
- 2:25Speaker 1: help some other people get prepared for their upcoming RUT
- 2:27Speaker 1: hunts as we move into that second week in November.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Um So Dan I gotta, I gotta, I gotta go
- 2:33Speaker 1: to you first, because you have been playing the suspense
- 2:37Speaker 1: card so heavily over the last couple of days on
- 2:40Speaker 1: your Instagram story, Like you just made people wait and
- 2:43Speaker 1: wait and wait. Um, people just want to know the details.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So can you just walk us through your rutcation and
- 2:49Speaker 1: how the hell this all happened? And I tell you what,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it's been an absolute emotional roller coaster without sounding dumb.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I mean that's what That's what it's been, um, I
- 3:02Speaker 1: I mean, here's here's the very short story shot. A
- 3:06Speaker 1: buck took me two days to find him, had tons
- 3:09Speaker 1: of blood. It started graining lost lost the blood, and
- 3:14Speaker 1: and went back the next day after oh after ten
- 3:18Speaker 1: hours of looking for him. Uh two of those hours
- 3:22Speaker 1: were gritting in pouring rain. And then the next day
- 3:27Speaker 1: I go back to where I lost last blood with
- 3:29Speaker 1: another guy and he's laying right there. Wow, well my mind.
- 3:37Speaker 1: The whole the last twenty four hours or forty hours
- 3:41Speaker 1: has been a blur. Can we get the non short
- 3:45Speaker 1: story though? I mean, if we're gonna get just a
- 3:47Speaker 1: short story, the podcast is gonna be super short today, right,
- 3:51Speaker 1: So I mean, what do you want me? What do
- 3:53Speaker 1: you want to talk about the details of the strategy. Well,
- 3:55Speaker 1: let's first hear like what your how your rotation went
- 3:58Speaker 1: leading up to this, what you're thinking, how those first
- 4:00Speaker 1: few hunts went, and then and then let's deep dive
- 4:03Speaker 1: into that specific day, what the strategy was leading into it,
- 4:06Speaker 1: why you set up, while you set up there, and
- 4:09Speaker 1: then what actually happened. Let's do that Before that, they'll
- 4:13Speaker 1: want to take a quick second to thank our friends
- 4:15Speaker 1: at ONYX. And I'm actually right now as I'm recording
- 4:18Speaker 1: this on a white tailed deer hunt with Steve and
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yanni and the rest of the Meat Eater crew and ONYX.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The hunt app is something that I've been using on
- 4:28Speaker 1: this hunt, not only just to look at let's say
- 4:30Speaker 1: my aerial views of the property or the topographic lines
- 4:33Speaker 1: on the property, um, but also because you can save
- 4:36Speaker 1: way points and then you can take those way points
- 4:39Speaker 1: and then you can share them with other people. So
- 4:41Speaker 1: a situation that I'll probably be doing maybe later today
- 4:44Speaker 1: or tomorrow with Steve is rather than trying to say, hey, Steve,
- 4:47Speaker 1: go drive down this road, park at the big oat tree,
- 4:49Speaker 1: walk down the two track, turn left at the apple tree,
- 4:52Speaker 1: climb up the hill and then go out in this whale.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Rather than that, I can just text him away point
- 4:59Speaker 1: from my Onyx Hunt app. I can just share that
- 5:01Speaker 1: waypoint with him. He can click a link and it
- 5:03Speaker 1: pulls up on his phone, and then he able to
- 5:05Speaker 1: actually have that waypoint now right there in his hands.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He can walk right to it. It's a whole lot
- 5:10Speaker 1: easier than the original situation I described. So the Onyx
- 5:15Speaker 1: Hunt app is great for you as a solo hunter,
- 5:17Speaker 1: but it's also terrific if you're there with friends and
- 5:19Speaker 1: you want to share spots where you're gonna hunt, or
- 5:21Speaker 1: if you want to maybe say, hey, this is where
- 5:23Speaker 1: I got last blood, or this is where the deer
- 5:25Speaker 1: went down, or this is where I last saw the deer,
- 5:27Speaker 1: this is where I think you should go try to hunt,
- 5:29Speaker 1: or this is where the big scrape was, whatever it
- 5:31Speaker 1: might be. Being able to share those waypoints is a
- 5:34Speaker 1: really handy little tool to have. That's on top of
- 5:37Speaker 1: all the other things with the Onyx, Like I mentioned,
- 5:39Speaker 1: the great map views, the fact that you can measure distances,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you can measure areas, you can um do a whole
- 5:45Speaker 1: stlet of different things all right, from the convenience of
- 5:48Speaker 1: your mobile device. So if you're interested in trying it,
- 5:50Speaker 1: if you haven't yet tried, it would encourage you to do.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So you can go search for on X on whatever
- 5:54Speaker 1: mobile app store you'd like to use, or you can
- 5:57Speaker 1: go do on x maps dot com and if you
- 5:59Speaker 1: use more code wired, you can get off. That's w
- 6:04Speaker 1: I R E D for off. Yeah. Okay, So day
- 6:10Speaker 1: one of my vacation was this past Friday, and UM,
- 6:14Speaker 1: I went into a pinch point, uh, not not really
- 6:18Speaker 1: knowing what to expect because, like I mentioned on earlier podcasts, uh,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you know, earlier this month or last late October, I
- 6:26Speaker 1: had nothing on trail camera that even excited me. You know, um,
- 6:32Speaker 1: there wasn't a ton of deer sign Uh. I checked
- 6:35Speaker 1: my trail cameras and just let me break this down
- 6:38Speaker 1: for you coon hunters, small deer coyotes, some random guy
- 6:43Speaker 1: walking through woods and other hunters. That's what was on
- 6:46Speaker 1: my trail cameras. So I didn't really I didn't. I
- 6:51Speaker 1: really didn't know what to expect. So on Friday, I
- 6:54Speaker 1: just go into a stand that was historically a uh
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's a inch point where there's decent trail camera pictures
- 7:03Speaker 1: in the past of deer kind of cruise in this area,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and I walk in there, I set up uh in
- 7:10Speaker 1: this pinch point. I see one dough cruise through pretty quickly.
- 7:15Speaker 1: This is uh what November two, And then about twenty
- 7:19Speaker 1: minutes later, here comes this three year old tin pointer
- 7:23Speaker 1: that I have trail camera pictures throughout the whole summer,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and uh he came, oh within fifty yards, i'd say,
- 7:30Speaker 1: of me on a different trail. Nothing that I was
- 7:34Speaker 1: really interested in at that time. UH got out, went
- 7:38Speaker 1: to Saturday morning. I went to a this basically it's
- 7:44Speaker 1: a travel corridor between food and bedding. They dropped down
- 7:47Speaker 1: off this ridge, come to a creek bottom and then
- 7:51Speaker 1: they kind of depending on the wind direction, they go
- 7:54Speaker 1: uh to the south on a they go to the
- 7:58Speaker 1: south on a south wind. They go to the north
- 8:02Speaker 1: ridge on a north ridge on a north wind. And
- 8:05Speaker 1: I was hoping to catch them in this It's it's
- 8:08Speaker 1: almost like a pinch but it's more of a travel corridor.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And there's a big giant scrape that's worked over uh
- 8:15Speaker 1: and I have a trail camera over top of it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So I said, I'm gonna hunt that stand in the morning.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And then I'm gonna check that trail camera. Right after
- 8:21Speaker 1: that hunt and I get in there, it starts to
- 8:24Speaker 1: be daylight. Um, I see I hear something kind of
- 8:28Speaker 1: running in the distance. UM, like, oh man, it might
- 8:31Speaker 1: be on tonight or this morning. And nothing shows up.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Nothing shows up, nothing shows up. I go uh. I
- 8:40Speaker 1: finally put the horns together. I was like, man, I
- 8:42Speaker 1: want to see at least see something. So I rattle
- 8:46Speaker 1: and uh. Then it's just it's just like one four corns.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And then twenty minutes later it was like a fifty
- 8:56Speaker 1: three pointer, you know what I mean, Just like nothing,
- 8:59Speaker 1: nothing that really interested me, nothing to get me. I mean,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm glad I saw dear, I'm glad that rattling work.
- 9:04Speaker 1: But I drove around the section. I was seeing dough groups.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Still nothing, you know, like there's something about a dog
- 9:15Speaker 1: group when it starts, maybe you start to see a
- 9:17Speaker 1: single dough or just we're fall only then you then
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know Mom is off with somebody, you know what
- 9:25Speaker 1: I mean. But I'm still seeing these big dog groups.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So Saturday morning, Uh, Saturday morning was really the my
- 9:38Speaker 1: And then went around and I checked more trail cameras
- 9:41Speaker 1: that I had nothing, And then it started to rain,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and so I didn't hunt. I didn't hunt. No, it
- 9:49Speaker 1: rained all during the day and then finally it stopped
- 9:52Speaker 1: raining long enough for me to this crazy wind. So
- 9:56Speaker 1: I went and hunted in a in a standing cornfield.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Uh saw a couple of bucks. And by the way,
- 10:03Speaker 1: which is hurting the property that I'm on, because that
- 10:06Speaker 1: cornfield that I still hunted in was loaded with deer.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And come to find out that a grain bend collapsed,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and like a grain bend collapsed, and another one in
- 10:20Speaker 1: the area went out of business, I guess. And the
- 10:23Speaker 1: farmers don't have any place to put these crops. So
- 10:28Speaker 1: there is a ton a ton of standing corn in
- 10:31Speaker 1: the area that I hunt, and standing crops period beans
- 10:34Speaker 1: as well. So to the west of my property is
- 10:38Speaker 1: standing beans, and to the east of the property is
- 10:41Speaker 1: standing corn, and there's no place for the farmers to
- 10:43Speaker 1: put it. They don't have room in their grain bends.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So and and the co ops don't have room either.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So this is not good for me, right, all of
- 10:54Speaker 1: the bad things that you know, as far as hunt
- 10:58Speaker 1: the rut is concerned. You don't want standing crops, You
- 11:01Speaker 1: don't want guys tune hunting your property. You don't want
- 11:05Speaker 1: guys four wheeling through it. You don't want other hunters there,
- 11:07Speaker 1: you don't want high you know, kyote numbers. So I
- 11:11Speaker 1: was getting a little stressed. Man. I was just like,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you know, this sucks so and how many days did
- 11:18Speaker 1: you have a lotted Um, I'm not honestly scheduled to
- 11:23Speaker 1: go back until the nineteenth of November. Oh that's amazing. Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: So so Saturday morning happens, it rains, I can't drive
- 11:34Speaker 1: back to the main farm because it's just too muddy.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So I still I still hunt Saturday night. And then
- 11:40Speaker 1: the rain comes and it rained, and it's all day Sunday.
- 11:45Speaker 1: It rained and it rained and it rained and it poured.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So um, I had this feeling right because two years ago,
- 11:53Speaker 1: after the rain came, the I there's like a break
- 11:58Speaker 1: in the weather. The fronts pushed through. And I knew
- 12:01Speaker 1: that after and I'm not talking about just like a
- 12:03Speaker 1: couple of hours worth the showers. I'm talking about twelve, fourteen,
- 12:07Speaker 1: fifteen hours of solid rain. It's gonna wash away these
- 12:13Speaker 1: deer bedded down and all they're gonna want to do
- 12:15Speaker 1: after that is eat and make fresh sign And I
- 12:21Speaker 1: needed I couldn't get to the back of the farm
- 12:23Speaker 1: to where I wanted to go. So I was like,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you know what, I'm gonna try to use the standing
- 12:27Speaker 1: corn to my advantage because I want to see what's
- 12:32Speaker 1: coming in and out of the timber on this. Uh,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, a part of the property that I are
- 12:38Speaker 1: very rarely hunt because, uh, it's just close to the road.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Typically when the crops are out it you can see
- 12:47Speaker 1: into this. It's it's pretty close to the road and
- 12:49Speaker 1: all these all these things just make this area not
- 12:54Speaker 1: good when the crops are out. But because they're standing corn,
- 12:57Speaker 1: there's this huge buffer. Now but between the road and
- 13:01Speaker 1: where um I eventually go in and uh, hang this
- 13:05Speaker 1: tree stand. So do you want me to get into
- 13:09Speaker 1: the actual the actual hut, Now, yeah, let's dive into it. Okay.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So here's how this works. Right, Imagine a imagine a
- 13:21Speaker 1: corn like a corn field, and it's just a big square.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Now take the and then of that square. It's made
- 13:29Speaker 1: up of four similar equal squares, and the top left
- 13:32Speaker 1: corner of that square is drainage off this field and
- 13:36Speaker 1: it's full of thorns and brush and just nastiness that
- 13:40Speaker 1: the deer so thick the deer don't even go in
- 13:43Speaker 1: there in bed because they can. It's just so many
- 13:46Speaker 1: thorns and whatnot. And half that into September. It's like
- 13:51Speaker 1: there's an old road that was there fifty sixty however,
- 13:54Speaker 1: many years ago, um that the farmers would use maybe
- 13:58Speaker 1: when this was all passed long long time ago. And
- 14:03Speaker 1: this too, it's like maybe enough for a four wheel
- 14:05Speaker 1: or now. And the the deer like to go through there.
- 14:11Speaker 1: They cut the corner and they kind of crossed the
- 14:14Speaker 1: drainage because there's that the road is there. It's like,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I don't even want to call it a road. It's
- 14:19Speaker 1: basically a terrain feature, if this makes sense. On the
- 14:22Speaker 1: opposite side of this really nasty thicket that nothing lives in,
- 14:29Speaker 1: that connects to the south to a fence line that
- 14:32Speaker 1: runs on the west side of this cornfield. And as
- 14:35Speaker 1: you know and everybody knows, sunlight on a fence row
- 14:39Speaker 1: that's bordering a timber, it's really thick from maybe the
- 14:44Speaker 1: field edge too, I don't know, twenty yards into the timber.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And what that does is it creates an edge on
- 14:53Speaker 1: the inside of the timber. So you have a field edge,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and then you have this like it's it's not im assable.
- 15:00Speaker 1: There's trails that run through it, but it's really thick.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And then outside of that, where the timber starts to
- 15:06Speaker 1: open up, there's trails that run along that, and there's
- 15:11Speaker 1: there was a rub and an old scrape. Right the
- 15:16Speaker 1: scrape was old because it was rain. I don't want
- 15:18Speaker 1: to stay old. I want to say it wasn't used.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Who knows how fresh the last time it was used,
- 15:23Speaker 1: because um, it had rain so much and I'm and
- 15:28Speaker 1: I had a southwest wind, so that wind was blowing
- 15:32Speaker 1: into the thicket and that terrain feature was just on
- 15:39Speaker 1: the outside of that thicket. So my my thought process
- 15:42Speaker 1: here was, I'm gonna set up in a tree to
- 15:46Speaker 1: where I can look down this ridge that leads up
- 15:50Speaker 1: to the cornfield and the draw the lower part. So
- 15:54Speaker 1: something comes up over the next draw or or comes
- 15:57Speaker 1: up the draw or comes from the next ridge. They're
- 15:59Speaker 1: gonna loop or round and they're gonna use this, uh,
- 16:04Speaker 1: this terrain feature because it's not gonna they may not
- 16:08Speaker 1: want to go into the cornfield yet, and sure enough,
- 16:10Speaker 1: man like this is when it gets So I set
- 16:14Speaker 1: up and from a strategy standpoint, a lot of people
- 16:18Speaker 1: like to hunt scrapes on field edges. I would have
- 16:23Speaker 1: never seen this deer if I was hunting a field edge.
- 16:26Speaker 1: He didn't. He was not interested in coming out to eat.
- 16:29Speaker 1: He wasn't interested in um. He was on a mission.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And so I get set up, you know, I tuck.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I text our buddy Ben Harshine, and I the sex
- 16:41Speaker 1: message says, I have a good feeling about tonight. Sent
- 16:45Speaker 1: that at three fourteen or something like that. Sitting down,
- 16:50Speaker 1: you know, it's overcast. It's it's like one of those
- 16:53Speaker 1: days where you don't know why it's not raining because
- 16:56Speaker 1: the clouds above you make it look like it should
- 16:59Speaker 1: be raining. So it's dark. I mean, it's just really dark,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you know. And and it starts to rain again then,
- 17:07Speaker 1: so I'm like, oh, man, I don't want to get wet.
- 17:11Speaker 1: So I stand up, I turn around, I faced the tree,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and I start to put on my rain jacket. I
- 17:19Speaker 1: have one sleeve in my rain jacket, and I hear
- 17:22Speaker 1: a twig break behind me, and I'm like, man, there's
- 17:28Speaker 1: no squirrels out right now because everything's wet. It's raining,
- 17:31Speaker 1: it's raining. I look behind me. He's at twenty yards
- 17:35Speaker 1: looking right at my tree. And i instant I look
- 17:41Speaker 1: at him, and I instantly know who it is. Let's
- 17:46Speaker 1: go back to March. Remember, I had that really good
- 17:48Speaker 1: day of shed hunting and I found like nine sheds
- 17:52Speaker 1: and forty minutes all in this grass area of this field.
- 17:55Speaker 1: The big the biggest one that I found was this buck.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And he was last year he was he was an eight,
- 18:04Speaker 1: main frame eight with he had really good masks, mainframe
- 18:07Speaker 1: eight with a little crab claw out front. And and
- 18:13Speaker 1: this year his his left slide with a crab claw
- 18:18Speaker 1: blew up um. And the crazy part was I didn't
- 18:22Speaker 1: have very many I didn't have hardly any pictures of him.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I was always thinking about this buck because the shed
- 18:28Speaker 1: sits right next to my computers. It's one that I
- 18:31Speaker 1: pick up and hold all the time and you know,
- 18:33Speaker 1: fiddle with and um. So I honestly thought that that day,
- 18:40Speaker 1: Sunday night, if I'm gonna see this buck, it's gonna be.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It's probably gonna be tonight. And I don't know what
- 18:46Speaker 1: it was. Mark. Do you ever get a feeling like, man,
- 18:50Speaker 1: something's gonna happen tonight, like you don't you know some
- 18:53Speaker 1: and sometimes they happen and sometimes they don't. But this
- 18:57Speaker 1: particular this particular buck was on my mind, and it's
- 19:01Speaker 1: almost like I visualized him into existence. It was it was,
- 19:07Speaker 1: it was crazy. It was crazy. So anyway back to
- 19:11Speaker 1: the story, right, now we know who this buck is.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I identify him easily because now that crab claw is
- 19:16Speaker 1: a huge crab claw. He's like this massive, massive side
- 19:20Speaker 1: and he's walking. I can hear him walking right towards
- 19:23Speaker 1: my tree, and I'm like, oh my god, already, I'm
- 19:27Speaker 1: gonna screw up, right, I'm You've got your rain jacket
- 19:31Speaker 1: halfway on at this point, still too right right, one
- 19:34Speaker 1: arm in my rain jacket, and so I gotta get yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 1: right right. So I'm so he's walking right towards me.
- 19:45Speaker 1: You know, now he's at fifteen yards slowly I'm taking slowly.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I'm taking my rain jacket off, and I flipped the
- 19:52Speaker 1: seed of my lone wolf up and it's one of
- 19:54Speaker 1: those sticker seats, so I I actually have a shelf,
- 19:57Speaker 1: like a very small surface area where I lay in
- 20:00Speaker 1: my jacket down and now I'm facing the tree. My
- 20:05Speaker 1: bow holders to to my right, and I don't know
- 20:08Speaker 1: if this deer is going to go left or right,
- 20:11Speaker 1: because when he does go pick in the direction to go,
- 20:15Speaker 1: I have to make a move, and he starts to
- 20:19Speaker 1: go right. And that's good for me because all I
- 20:21Speaker 1: had to do was turned around and in one motion,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I clip in and I pulled my bow off the hangar.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And when I do that, I looked to my right
- 20:33Speaker 1: and he's at four yards I would say four or
- 20:36Speaker 1: five yards. I arranged it so it's it was four
- 20:38Speaker 1: yards from my stand and and he's and I just
- 20:45Speaker 1: see the big side walk right by me, and I'm
- 20:48Speaker 1: just like, man, I can't like if I move now,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I'm surely gonna get busted. I I probably looking back
- 20:55Speaker 1: on it now, I probably could have made more. I
- 20:57Speaker 1: could have done jumping jacks in the tree. And he
- 20:59Speaker 1: probably went to noticed me. He was on a mission.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And so so I see, I see him, he's coming
- 21:06Speaker 1: at me. Took my rein jacket off, I clipped in
- 21:09Speaker 1: and I draw back and as I draw back, he's
- 21:14Speaker 1: behind a branch, and I'm just like, no, son of
- 21:18Speaker 1: a gun, what am I gonna do? So I did
- 21:20Speaker 1: a squat in the in the tree stand so right,
- 21:27Speaker 1: pay it off right right. So I'm I'm squatting down
- 21:31Speaker 1: and my peep sites not lining up, so I had
- 21:34Speaker 1: to I had to pull my head back, realigned, get
- 21:37Speaker 1: my kisser button in, get set up. And there he is.
- 21:40Speaker 1: He's he's hard quartering away and and and I'm like,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I gotta opening. I settled my pen and I'm not.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I'm not carried away, right, I'm not like. I don't
- 21:53Speaker 1: feel like I have buck fever at this point. Right,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I identified the buck. Right, I had to make sure
- 22:00Speaker 1: that everything was ready. I took a breath. I couldn't.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I couldn't get set backed up, took another breath, went in,
- 22:10Speaker 1: did my you know, I put my kisser button on
- 22:14Speaker 1: my lip, I put my string on my nose, you know,
- 22:17Speaker 1: check check anchored release, and you hear that. I don't know,
- 22:23Speaker 1: like you're punching meat, right, It's just a hard, hard,
- 22:29Speaker 1: good sounding connect. He mule kicks and then he takes
- 22:33Speaker 1: a hard right turn and he runs two steps and
- 22:35Speaker 1: he disappears behind the pine tree. And that was the
- 22:38Speaker 1: last time I saw him. He went. I put my
- 22:41Speaker 1: binoes up. I couldn't see where he went nothing, And
- 22:45Speaker 1: I'm just like, oh no, oh my god, I just
- 22:48Speaker 1: shot one of my hitless bucks. Right, And with that
- 22:51Speaker 1: mule kick. I was very confident in that shot, right,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I was just I was aiming for I was aiming
- 22:59Speaker 1: for a oh somewhere right between the the I don't know,
- 23:06Speaker 1: like the back rib in the front shoulder, which on
- 23:09Speaker 1: a hard quartering shots a very small target, you know
- 23:13Speaker 1: what I mean? Yeah? And do you did did you
- 23:15Speaker 1: actually like where did you really aim at that? Because
- 23:18Speaker 1: I know in the past you and we both have
- 23:20Speaker 1: had situations where we you know, it just happened so fast.
- 23:23Speaker 1: And did you were able to slow down the moment
- 23:26Speaker 1: and be like actively choose exactly where you aim pick
- 23:28Speaker 1: that little spot or was it still a little bit
- 23:30Speaker 1: of a blurred blackout kind of like has been Ill
- 23:33Speaker 1: tell you what. It was clearer than any other time.
- 23:38Speaker 1: That's awesome, right, good? So I was I was clear. Now,
- 23:45Speaker 1: for those of everybody who you know, follows me on Instagram,
- 23:49Speaker 1: that's not how it ended, right. But so I called
- 23:54Speaker 1: my buddy Ryan and I'm like, dude, I just hit
- 23:57Speaker 1: this book. Blah blah blah blah blah. We start talking
- 24:00Speaker 1: over scenarios. Right, he was hard quartering towards um. We
- 24:04Speaker 1: started talking about, um, you know, okay, what if the
- 24:07Speaker 1: arrow were right? Yeah, hard quartering away right. I'm like,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I there's a part of me that there's this gut feeling,
- 24:16Speaker 1: the initial feeling that you get when you released the
- 24:19Speaker 1: arrow and it connects with the deer. My gut feeling
- 24:22Speaker 1: initially was dead deer, he's done, he's done. And and
- 24:32Speaker 1: I had a good feeling. I saw the mule kick. Uh.
- 24:35Speaker 1: He took off running like you know, like deer do
- 24:37Speaker 1: when they get shot by arrows. And I was very confident.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Called my wife, called my buddy, Um Ryan. We went
- 24:45Speaker 1: over scenarios, um and I waited forty five minutes in
- 24:49Speaker 1: the tree. I said to myself, okay, man, go down,
- 24:53Speaker 1: check in the side of impact, look for the arrow.
- 24:56Speaker 1: And there's you know, and there's that's what you're gonna do.
- 25:00Speaker 1: You're gonna you're gonna slow down, You're gonna take all
- 25:03Speaker 1: the proper steps. I tear down all my stuff out
- 25:07Speaker 1: of the tree. I set it down at the base
- 25:10Speaker 1: of the tree. Walk over white hair and I'm like,
- 25:16Speaker 1: oh boy, because white hair means belly, means inside leg
- 25:23Speaker 1: means a whole bunch of things that are not a
- 25:26Speaker 1: good shot, right, and and so there's no blood of impact.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I do kind of a ten yard, I said, I'm
- 25:34Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna look for blood for ten more yards
- 25:36Speaker 1: because in the past I've had deer double lungs, even
- 25:40Speaker 1: where they don't start leaking until they get a bound
- 25:43Speaker 1: or two out. So I'm like, Okay, well, I'm gonna
- 25:46Speaker 1: look for ten more yards. If I don't find deer,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm backing out the entire night. I don't care this
- 25:50Speaker 1: This buck is big enough to where an old enough
- 25:54Speaker 1: and a hitless buck. I'm going to give him as
- 25:56Speaker 1: much time to die as he needs um and and
- 26:01Speaker 1: I back out. And if you've ever waited twenty four
- 26:04Speaker 1: hours for a for a deer, you know that that's
- 26:10Speaker 1: when the doubt starts to creep in, Right, That's when
- 26:13Speaker 1: all these crazy things start to you know, like all
- 26:17Speaker 1: the craziness starts to happen, and your mind starts playing
- 26:21Speaker 1: tricks on you, and and you're like, dude, you shot
- 26:24Speaker 1: that deer in the neck, that's where there's white. Dude,
- 26:27Speaker 1: you shot that deer on the inside leg, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 1: or you know all these things. So like I feel
- 26:35Speaker 1: like I'm doing a lot of talking here, but this
- 26:37Speaker 1: is the story, right, I mean that from from from
- 26:41Speaker 1: the I know. I know. So from the moment I
- 26:44Speaker 1: saw him to the moment I released an arrow was
- 26:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, somewhere about twenty to thirty seconds, he
- 26:53Speaker 1: pops up. He's walking over a ridge at a good clip.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I didn't have to stop him. He stopped. He looked
- 27:01Speaker 1: like kind of behind him, but up the ridge a
- 27:02Speaker 1: little more and I let him have it. Twenty four hours, right,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'm trying to I'm talking about like getting dogs. And
- 27:11Speaker 1: it's funny. Ross actually contacted me because I made a
- 27:15Speaker 1: post on Facebook or on Instagram and Ross is like, dude,
- 27:19Speaker 1: you can't use a dog because dogs are illegal in
- 27:22Speaker 1: Iowa to use to track deer. Ross houstin you here
- 27:26Speaker 1: in the yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah. So he's
- 27:34Speaker 1: telling me because I made a post. I'm like, damn, man,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I want to use a dog. And he comes back
- 27:39Speaker 1: and he's like, dude, you can't use a dog. It's illegal,
- 27:41Speaker 1: and I'm just like, ah, you kidding me. Law, that
- 27:45Speaker 1: is a stupid law. But I guess in the past
- 27:47Speaker 1: some people have taken advantage of it. And it's like, hey,
- 27:50Speaker 1: I'm tracking a deer. Yeah, the deer is still alive. Right,
- 27:53Speaker 1: You're tracking it with four other dogs through the woods.
- 27:55Speaker 1: You know. Anyway, so in the doubt creeps in. I'm
- 28:02Speaker 1: trying to get a rally of people to maybe come
- 28:05Speaker 1: help me. And you know, it's the rut. All my
- 28:08Speaker 1: buddies are hunting, so they at least want to do
- 28:12Speaker 1: the morning hunt and then come out with me. And
- 28:15Speaker 1: uh so I wait for a while, um, and then
- 28:19Speaker 1: I'm just like, dude. My initial reaction was, was I
- 28:23Speaker 1: slammed it? Right? That a dead deer? And so I
- 28:29Speaker 1: go back. I go back to the side of the impact.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I'm I'm looking up at the tree, looking at the angles.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm actually at this point, I'm trying to find my arrows.
- 28:37Speaker 1: See where my arrows at, See where my arrows that
- 28:39Speaker 1: find arrow? No arrow? I'm like, okay, the arrow is
- 28:41Speaker 1: still in this deer. At this point, I walk about
- 28:45Speaker 1: forty yards from the stand. Oh my god, there's drop
- 28:49Speaker 1: of blood. He's bleeding, right, And that right there is
- 28:53Speaker 1: the start of it. Right that that for me was
- 28:56Speaker 1: like this, a little bit of sigh. And every step
- 29:01Speaker 1: exactly every step I took after that, oh blood, blood, blood,
- 29:08Speaker 1: A little bit of blood, blood, blood, big blood, big blood.
- 29:11Speaker 1: And at this you know when you you get that
- 29:13Speaker 1: first big gusher pile, you're like, oh yes, dead dear, confidence, confidence, confidence,
- 29:20Speaker 1: You're built. And I'm so this happened, Mark, This is
- 29:24Speaker 1: no joke. This happened. This amount of blood for go down,
- 29:32Speaker 1: go down down the ridge, down into the valley. You know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: this is almost really close to where you found the
- 29:37Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan shed. Actually okay, yeah, exactly, yea. So how
- 29:42Speaker 1: it all drops down into the spot and and so
- 29:47Speaker 1: so it's blood, blood, blood, blood, more blood, blood, lots
- 29:51Speaker 1: of blood. And it's one of those blood trails where
- 29:53Speaker 1: you're walking through the timber following it. You don't need
- 29:56Speaker 1: to bend over, you don't need to get on your
- 29:57Speaker 1: hands and knees that much blood. Right, So he goes down,
- 30:02Speaker 1: he crosses a little bit of a dry creek. Bed
- 30:05Speaker 1: comes back up, blood following it. Blood, and all of
- 30:09Speaker 1: a sudden, the blood. I get to a spot where
- 30:11Speaker 1: the blood is just it stops, it shut off, and
- 30:14Speaker 1: I'm like, this is not good. So I start to
- 30:20Speaker 1: do what everybody, you know, what you're supposed to do, Mark,
- 30:22Speaker 1: last blood and you start doing your circles, right, you
- 30:25Speaker 1: you go out five ft, look, go out six ft looks,
- 30:28Speaker 1: you know, ten ft look nothing. Nothing. And then I'm like, okay,
- 30:32Speaker 1: let's see how hurt this deer is. So I go
- 30:35Speaker 1: up the up the ridge, the nearest ridge, and I
- 30:39Speaker 1: find blood. So, now what he's done is he's walked.
- 30:42Speaker 1: He's walked away from where he got shot. If he
- 30:45Speaker 1: jay hooks back up an opposite ridge, and now he's
- 30:48Speaker 1: walking in a hundred and eighty degrees in opposite direction
- 30:52Speaker 1: from where where he's at. Right, blood, blood, blood, I
- 30:56Speaker 1: find a bed. I'm like, he laid down, he's hurt.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Walk up the trail. A little bit. More blood, blood, blood,
- 31:04Speaker 1: there's another bed. He's hurt bad, right, he's hurt bad.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I'm the next over this next ridge. I'm gonna find him. Blood. Blood.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Now the blood starts to slow down a little bit.
- 31:16Speaker 1: All right, blood is starting to slow down, And I'm
- 31:21Speaker 1: you should see me right now. I'm I'm telling you
- 31:23Speaker 1: this story, and I'm pacing in my mom's guest bedroom
- 31:26Speaker 1: like reacting all all this. But uh, it starts to
- 31:32Speaker 1: go to a drop right and then and then and
- 31:35Speaker 1: then I get to a four wheeler trail and I'm like,
- 31:37Speaker 1: oh boy, so and so, now this four wheeler trail
- 31:42Speaker 1: leads to a road, and if he crosses this road,
- 31:45Speaker 1: oh boy, we got a whole another problem. So at
- 31:50Speaker 1: this time I'm up top. I call my buddy, another buddy.
- 31:53Speaker 1: He's he's actually gonna help me. H. He gets out
- 31:56Speaker 1: of the tree, he comes help me look for this
- 31:58Speaker 1: deer um. And as she's driving to where I'm at,
- 32:01Speaker 1: I find another drop of blood in a in a field.
- 32:04Speaker 1: So what he's done is he's now he's got off
- 32:06Speaker 1: the floor with her trail. He crossed through this very
- 32:09Speaker 1: like seven eight ft thicket that goes to the fence line.
- 32:14Speaker 1: He jumps the fence, he walks this field edge down
- 32:18Speaker 1: ten yards, jumps back in the timber. So now he's
- 32:21Speaker 1: double back. He's double backing again. So this is where
- 32:24Speaker 1: my buddy comes in. And now that the blood is
- 32:28Speaker 1: getting a little bit less and a little bit less
- 32:31Speaker 1: and a little bit less. Uh, and we're having to
- 32:33Speaker 1: slow down the track. Job we find another bed and
- 32:37Speaker 1: I'm looking at this and it looks like he only
- 32:40Speaker 1: only half of them laid down right, like this is
- 32:44Speaker 1: not a full bed, but there's blood all over on
- 32:46Speaker 1: in the inside. And now and at this time I'm like, man,
- 32:50Speaker 1: this deer is going to bleed to death. Why haven't
- 32:52Speaker 1: we found him yet? This is after twenty four hours.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Oh no, i'd I'd say about twelve hours, because I
- 33:00Speaker 1: shot him at about four and by the time my
- 33:04Speaker 1: buddy joined me was ten the next morning. Eighteen hours.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Eighteen hours, right, And so we dropped down off this
- 33:15Speaker 1: ridge again and we're heading right back to the original
- 33:19Speaker 1: blood trail, and sure enough, he crosses the blood trail.
- 33:25Speaker 1: So now we don't know if we're following his original
- 33:29Speaker 1: track or the second time he's come through the area.
- 33:33Speaker 1: So so I had to mark with my arrow where
- 33:38Speaker 1: this where this deer crosses crosses the path of the
- 33:42Speaker 1: original blood trail, and then we so he goes one
- 33:46Speaker 1: direction up this one drainage. I dropped down to this
- 33:49Speaker 1: uh other little dry creek bed and I see a
- 33:52Speaker 1: track and I'm like, oh, that's him. That's gotta be
- 33:57Speaker 1: at a big footprint. I'm walking this strike creek bed.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I'm following these big set of tracks. I look up
- 34:04Speaker 1: on the side of the creek bed and there's more blood.
- 34:09Speaker 1: He popped up out of this creek bed and he's
- 34:12Speaker 1: now back on dry land or he's back on land
- 34:15Speaker 1: and as he did that, he started to bleed again.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Blood blood, blood, blood, blood, blood, blood stop. Blood starts
- 34:24Speaker 1: going uphill. And I'm not talking a little bit a
- 34:28Speaker 1: little bit of incline. I'm talking like one of those
- 34:31Speaker 1: big inclines, Like, Okay, if this deer went up this,
- 34:36Speaker 1: he's not hurt as bad as I thought he was. Right,
- 34:38Speaker 1: this is an insane track job. Yes, this, it's this.
- 34:43Speaker 1: The track job is the story of this book. It's
- 34:46Speaker 1: not the it's not the thirty seconds I saw him,
- 34:49Speaker 1: It's not the shed shed Taylor. The story of this
- 34:52Speaker 1: book happens after I shoot him, and and this is
- 34:57Speaker 1: how much I respect these animals. After this, his will
- 35:00Speaker 1: to live was so strong that he was doing everything
- 35:04Speaker 1: he possibly could to avoid being detected. And and kind
- 35:09Speaker 1: of fast forwarding a little bit, he goes up, he
- 35:11Speaker 1: comes straight back down, and as he's coming down, he
- 35:14Speaker 1: goes to a creek bed. We lose blood. And this
- 35:17Speaker 1: is like the biggest time frame from when we lost
- 35:20Speaker 1: blood to when we found blood. It was about fifteen minutes.
- 35:25Speaker 1: And I started griding ridge at this one ridge, going
- 35:29Speaker 1: up to a betting area, and and now and now
- 35:34Speaker 1: I'm just like, oh man, what did he do. He
- 35:37Speaker 1: went all the way up this ridge and just to
- 35:39Speaker 1: go right back down the steep side again, back to
- 35:43Speaker 1: a drainage. It's almost like he knew he was being
- 35:46Speaker 1: going to be tracked, and he knew that that someone
- 35:51Speaker 1: was going to try to follow him, and he needed
- 35:53Speaker 1: to make that track job the most difficult. It's almost
- 35:55Speaker 1: like he knew what he was doing, you know what
- 35:57Speaker 1: I mean. Then I find a big chunk of fat.
- 36:02Speaker 1: So I'm like, okay, you don't get that. You don't
- 36:07Speaker 1: get that from just a rear end shot. Let's say,
- 36:10Speaker 1: if you you shot him in the hind quarter right,
- 36:12Speaker 1: there's guts in play here. So this deer, I know
- 36:15Speaker 1: he's gonna die. It's just a matter of finding game.
- 36:19Speaker 1: So I'm looking for this blood. I'm looking for this blood,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, I hear my buddy, and
- 36:23Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys have ever had this
- 36:25Speaker 1: happen where you're looking for a deer and you don't
- 36:27Speaker 1: find blood. You can't find blood, but you hear a
- 36:30Speaker 1: buddy go blood, and I oh, dude. It's like when
- 36:35Speaker 1: Mario eats a mushroom and he's like whoooooooo and he
- 36:39Speaker 1: goes he's faster now, you know, like he can go,
- 36:42Speaker 1: He's ready to go, and I was just like I
- 36:44Speaker 1: needed that energy. Followed blood sixty more yards and it
- 36:49Speaker 1: started to rain, and my heart just was like we
- 36:55Speaker 1: didn't find any more blood. So I'm like, all right, buddy,
- 37:01Speaker 1: I don't even know what to do. Look like I
- 37:04Speaker 1: wanted to help my buddy out. He gave up his
- 37:07Speaker 1: afternoon hunt for me. I took him to a local diner.
- 37:10Speaker 1: We ate lunch, and uh, we parted our ways. I
- 37:15Speaker 1: came back out to the farm and I started gritting
- 37:19Speaker 1: ridges in the pouring rain. It's just pouring, and I'm
- 37:25Speaker 1: I'm going through the thickest, nastiest stuff I could find,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and I'm just like I have to, Like I was
- 37:31Speaker 1: on a mission, like I had blinders on. All I
- 37:34Speaker 1: wanted to do was find this deer. And then and
- 37:37Speaker 1: then it started getting dark, and every second more doubt
- 37:42Speaker 1: creeped in, and more doubt creeped in, and more doubt
- 37:45Speaker 1: creeped in, and I was getting frustrated. I was angry
- 37:50Speaker 1: at myself. I was I don't know, there's all these
- 37:54Speaker 1: emotions that were going through I just shot the one
- 37:56Speaker 1: of the biggest bucks I've ever drew back on. Right,
- 38:00Speaker 1: this is probably the third biggest deer I've ever drew
- 38:03Speaker 1: back on. And he's a five year old. I have
- 38:07Speaker 1: history with him, all these things, and now the doubts
- 38:11Speaker 1: creeping in, Like, dud, you just wounded him. He's gonna
- 38:13Speaker 1: get eaten alive by coyotes. It's like you have this
- 38:15Speaker 1: little voice in your head calling you a dipshit, you
- 38:18Speaker 1: know what I mean. So I go home and have
- 38:23Speaker 1: a couple of glasses of whiskey, you know what I mean,
- 38:25Speaker 1: like just just to calm down. And I didn't sleep that,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you know, very good that night again. And and so
- 38:35Speaker 1: my stepdad gets a text message from one of his
- 38:37Speaker 1: buddies who's a follower of the Nine Fingers, and he's like, hey, man,
- 38:42Speaker 1: if Dan needs help, I'll help him out. And uh,
- 38:46Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, I'll take anybody I can get. I'll
- 38:48Speaker 1: take a blind guy right now. I don't care. So
- 38:52Speaker 1: he shows up at seven thirty in the morning. I'm like,
- 38:55Speaker 1: hey man, I really appreciate this. Let's go. I'll kind
- 38:58Speaker 1: of I'm this. I got three more ridges that I
- 39:02Speaker 1: need to grid. And if he makes it past this,
- 39:06Speaker 1: this fourth ridge he's gonna live. Like that was my goal,
- 39:11Speaker 1: Like I had this. I think it was two acres
- 39:17Speaker 1: that I wanted us to grid and if I didn't, like,
- 39:21Speaker 1: I wanted to search this area after blood and I
- 39:24Speaker 1: was shed hunting. I was basically shed hunting at this point, right,
- 39:28Speaker 1: And I said, I got these two more ridges or
- 39:30Speaker 1: three more ridges, I want to go check and then
- 39:32Speaker 1: after that if we don't find him nothing. So we
- 39:35Speaker 1: start on Ridge one and I'm working down looking through
- 39:39Speaker 1: all this these tree tops from when the loggers came through. Um,
- 39:44Speaker 1: he's up top looking in some thick betting area. I
- 39:47Speaker 1: go down. I pop over top of the ridge and
- 39:49Speaker 1: I'm working my way back up towards him and I
- 39:52Speaker 1: say and he signed, He's like no, I said, yeah,
- 39:54Speaker 1: I mean either. I look at him, and I said,
- 39:57Speaker 1: all right, how about I key down to where we
- 40:00Speaker 1: lost last blood and I will um, and what I'm
- 40:05Speaker 1: gonna do is that way you'll be able to see
- 40:07Speaker 1: the lay of the land better. Uh, you'll get an
- 40:09Speaker 1: idea of what this deer already did. And I'll walk
- 40:11Speaker 1: you through. And he's like, yeah, it's a good idea.
- 40:14Speaker 1: We started walking down this ridge, I thought my eyes
- 40:20Speaker 1: were screwing with me, Dude, This deer is laying where
- 40:26Speaker 1: I was standing the previous day where we lost blood
- 40:31Speaker 1: and it started to rain. He was laying dead, literally
- 40:40Speaker 1: where I was standing. Literally, Mark. This deer didn't die
- 40:46Speaker 1: on that next day. He died after I left the
- 40:50Speaker 1: timber the the that day. So he he he was
- 40:54Speaker 1: still alive at some point for thirty hours or so
- 41:00Speaker 1: after I shot him, and and he and he was
- 41:05Speaker 1: do I know what this deer was doing? Man, He
- 41:08Speaker 1: was in a position to where he was wounded bad.
- 41:13Speaker 1: He knew he needed to find a good wind, good betting.
- 41:17Speaker 1: And he watched me come off that ridge on that
- 41:19Speaker 1: blood sherald the next morning. I bet he was. He was.
- 41:24Speaker 1: He was watching us from some position. He was watching
- 41:28Speaker 1: us track his track him. And as we left that
- 41:34Speaker 1: final day that on of all days, my birthday, I
- 41:38Speaker 1: didn't find him. He came back into the area. He
- 41:42Speaker 1: didn't want to cross the road. He probably didn't know
- 41:44Speaker 1: that area. He didn't want to go to the south.
- 41:46Speaker 1: He probably he felt comfortable in this area, so he was.
- 41:50Speaker 1: He was okay with making loops because he was able
- 41:53Speaker 1: to see see us here, us smell us coming through
- 41:57Speaker 1: the timber and he was always one ridge ahead of us,
- 42:01Speaker 1: and I I lost my mind, dude, I just got emotional, right,
- 42:06Speaker 1: I was like, are you kidding me? This is crazy.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I can't believe like I was. I was like acting
- 42:13Speaker 1: like a little kid, like I don't know I was.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It's the greatest feeling in the world, dude. I've lost
- 42:19Speaker 1: two deer in my in my day that we're giants, right,
- 42:24Speaker 1: shipwreck and then another booner that didn't pan out, And
- 42:29Speaker 1: luckily those two deer were alive. And the whole time
- 42:34Speaker 1: I'm thinking about this, this is one of those moments
- 42:37Speaker 1: where you're happy you found him, but at the same time,
- 42:41Speaker 1: you know, dude, you know this dear suffered. This wasn't
- 42:45Speaker 1: a clean kill. This wasn't the kind of kill that
- 42:49Speaker 1: we hope for. This is one of those This is
- 42:51Speaker 1: one of those kills that's that nobody talks about. This
- 42:56Speaker 1: is the this is a kind of kill that the
- 42:58Speaker 1: deer probably could barely lay down because the arrow was
- 43:01Speaker 1: still in him. You know, the the violence of hunting
- 43:07Speaker 1: come it kind of came out, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 43:11Speaker 1: the unfortunate, the very unfortunate occasional. Yeah, the reality was
- 43:19Speaker 1: that this dear did not go out easy, and that
- 43:25Speaker 1: made me enjoy this moment in a different way because
- 43:30Speaker 1: although I am glad that I found this dear and
- 43:35Speaker 1: I was able to recover him, and he's gonna go
- 43:37Speaker 1: on my wall and I'm gonna be able to share
- 43:39Speaker 1: this story with my children and all the people who
- 43:42Speaker 1: asked me, at the same time, I didn't accomplish a goal,
- 43:48Speaker 1: and that's to make a quick, clean kill on an animal.
- 43:51Speaker 1: And in the moment, you know, you go back and
- 43:54Speaker 1: I have this moment where I'm like, should I pull
- 43:57Speaker 1: the trigger? And the killer and me as we kill animals, right,
- 44:01Speaker 1: the predator in me said do it? And I did it,
- 44:06Speaker 1: and I killed the animal. I got him. But it's
- 44:08Speaker 1: not the way I wanted it to be. So as
- 44:12Speaker 1: equally as happy, I don't even know how to say this.
- 44:16Speaker 1: I am, I am. I'm equally happy on two sides.
- 44:21Speaker 1: One I'm equal I'm happy that I found the deer.
- 44:26Speaker 1: I'm equally unhappy that how he died, and I'm unhappy
- 44:33Speaker 1: that I'm not going to be able to use the meat,
- 44:36Speaker 1: and I'm unhappy that he suffered and that it took
- 44:40Speaker 1: so long. But this is a reality. This is the
- 44:47Speaker 1: reality of hunting that sometimes they're not all double lung shots. Man,
- 44:51Speaker 1: they don't all die within range. And it sucked to
- 44:55Speaker 1: know that. Um, and it's bittersweet. Yeah, don't the there
- 45:02Speaker 1: is a certain contingency of the hunting world who to
- 45:07Speaker 1: this would say. And then they've said that. I had
- 45:09Speaker 1: someone send me a message saying this to me because
- 45:13Speaker 1: I had a somewhat similar situation to you with my
- 45:16Speaker 1: Nebraska buck. I had to wait till the next day
- 45:18Speaker 1: to find him because the shot was at quarter and
- 45:20Speaker 1: shot was a little bit back. UM said that you
- 45:23Speaker 1: shouldn't bow hunt if this, If if you hit a
- 45:26Speaker 1: buck like that, you should you should quit. Bow Hunting
- 45:29Speaker 1: is not efficient. It's not um as effective as as
- 45:32Speaker 1: a as a rifle or something like that. And so
- 45:34Speaker 1: for that reason, you should not bow hunt. How do
- 45:38Speaker 1: you or I how how do we respond to something
- 45:41Speaker 1: like that? How do you respond to something like that?
- 45:47Speaker 1: I mean, what's the if you told me Dan you
- 45:54Speaker 1: couldn't bow hunt anymore, you might as well take my arms. Yeah, Oh,
- 46:03Speaker 1: I just I don't know, man, that's ah, someone told me.
- 46:10Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm getting emotional, man, it's part
- 46:17Speaker 1: of me. Uh, it's it's my definition. Yeah, yeah, I
- 46:26Speaker 1: hear you. Man this, I I understand what you're feeling.
- 46:35Speaker 1: And I think and I think, if I imagine similar
- 46:39Speaker 1: to kind of the thoughts and feelings I had after
- 46:41Speaker 1: Nebraska Hunt. It's one of those things that what you
- 46:44Speaker 1: went through, what happened, right, there's nothing you can do
- 46:47Speaker 1: now to change what happened, right, what happened happened. But
- 46:51Speaker 1: what you can do is is while we do understand,
- 46:54Speaker 1: and I said this just last week, that is a
- 46:56Speaker 1: bow hunter, You're never going to be perfect no matter
- 46:59Speaker 1: what you do. There's there's so many things that happen
- 47:01Speaker 1: that are outside of your control. But you can always
- 47:04Speaker 1: strive to be more perfect. Right, So I imagine that you,
- 47:08Speaker 1: just like I, trying to find ways how can I
- 47:11Speaker 1: keep it getting better? How can I try to minimize
- 47:13Speaker 1: the potential for errors again in the future. What I mean, right,
- 47:16Speaker 1: that's all we can do as a bow owner is
- 47:18Speaker 1: constantly striving to to to improve, to get better, to
- 47:21Speaker 1: become more effective. Um. But and here's what I'll here's
- 47:26Speaker 1: what I'll say. I've never loved nature more, I've never
- 47:34Speaker 1: this is this is the debate internally that, dude. I
- 47:39Speaker 1: love nature, I love animals, that's it's it goes hand
- 47:45Speaker 1: in hand. But as a bow hunter, I honor this
- 47:49Speaker 1: animal by killing it. And that's hard for some people
- 47:52Speaker 1: to digest. That ultimate paradox exactly, and knowing that this
- 47:59Speaker 1: dear suffered it broke my heart. Man. But at the
- 48:04Speaker 1: same time, I'm okay, I'm I'm tough enough and okay
- 48:12Speaker 1: with that because I accepted the reality of bow hunting
- 48:17Speaker 1: that it is not sometimes like you said, perfect yeah, man,
- 48:24Speaker 1: that's um, it's yeah, it's it's you know, when I
- 48:29Speaker 1: got that comment, that message to me, it really pissed
- 48:32Speaker 1: me off. Um, But at the same time, you know,
- 48:36Speaker 1: it's it is a huge responsibility that we're taking upon
- 48:40Speaker 1: ourselves when we say that we're gonna go out there
- 48:42Speaker 1: and we're gonna chase an animal using this tool that
- 48:45Speaker 1: inherently is difficult, inherently is a challenge, and that's part
- 48:49Speaker 1: of why we love it, right. That's why bow hunting
- 48:51Speaker 1: is so That's why it's so kind of all encompassing
- 48:54Speaker 1: because it requires so much of you. It requires such
- 48:57Speaker 1: a level of competency and tension to detail and um,
- 49:02Speaker 1: it's not something you just pick up and take off
- 49:04Speaker 1: and go do like you have to put your heart
- 49:07Speaker 1: and soul into it. Um yea. But what And that's
- 49:12Speaker 1: why I'm so tore up about it is because I
- 49:15Speaker 1: did put my heart and soul into it. I did
- 49:17Speaker 1: do all the work to make it as clean and
- 49:21Speaker 1: as possible. But the outcome just happens. Dude, Tom Brady
- 49:25Speaker 1: loses football games sometimes, right the no matter how much
- 49:29Speaker 1: practice stuff, ship goes wrong. And this is where the
- 49:34Speaker 1: and and this happened to me, And dude, I hope
- 49:39Speaker 1: no one ever feels the way that you know. I
- 49:43Speaker 1: hope every shots you know, a double long heart shot.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I wish, but it doesn't happen. And you take it,
- 49:52Speaker 1: you move on, you learn from it, you try to
- 49:54Speaker 1: take away something from it. And I'll tell you what
- 49:57Speaker 1: I learned. I learned so much from this, Like may
- 50:00Speaker 1: be what I should have done different, maybe what I
- 50:02Speaker 1: could do better next time, but also what deer do
- 50:05Speaker 1: when they're hit bad? Right where I need to look,
- 50:10Speaker 1: what what they're what they're thinking when they're when they're
- 50:13Speaker 1: wounded like this, So we're we're what was the shot?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Describe where where it came out? And this is this
- 50:20Speaker 1: is probably gonna be like dude, but let me tell i'll.
- 50:24Speaker 1: First off, I want to tell you this. I was
- 50:27Speaker 1: shooting my elk arrow, right heavy arrow, and uh. Not
- 50:32Speaker 1: only did it have a heavy arrow, but it was
- 50:34Speaker 1: a fixed blade. I do not feel that I would
- 50:36Speaker 1: have found this deer if I had a mechanical broadhead. Okay, However,
- 50:42Speaker 1: fixed blade, you know, not a lot of momentum loss
- 50:45Speaker 1: on impact. I went through the hind quarter, I went
- 50:50Speaker 1: into his into his guts, up through like his stomach,
- 50:57Speaker 1: and I hit his liver and the arrow exited out
- 51:00Speaker 1: of his brisket. So the entire wound channel was the
- 51:05Speaker 1: length of the arrow when I when I found him,
- 51:10Speaker 1: I found the Uh. I found the back half of
- 51:14Speaker 1: the arrow in the side of him. So on this
- 51:19Speaker 1: hard quartering shot right, it was on this hard on
- 51:24Speaker 1: the hard quartering shot, even a little miss to the
- 51:28Speaker 1: right was a was a big miss, you know what
- 51:33Speaker 1: I mean. However, my equipment saved me. Right. My equipment
- 51:40Speaker 1: went from him going off and dying in me never
- 51:43Speaker 1: recovering to him, to causing the right amount of damage too.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Luckily I was able to find him. Okay, So in retrospect,
- 51:52Speaker 1: now looking back on it. Do you think where do
- 51:56Speaker 1: you think the error was? Was the error in the
- 51:58Speaker 1: fact that you chose to take that shot? Did you
- 52:00Speaker 1: just maybe you shouldn't have or was the error in
- 52:02Speaker 1: the execution of the shot? Or was there no error
- 52:04Speaker 1: and just bad luck? That's something happened. Have you, like,
- 52:07Speaker 1: have you tried it in any way put a finger
- 52:09Speaker 1: on what maybe was what happened? Or is it just
- 52:14Speaker 1: it's it's it's a combination of all those things. Right.
- 52:18Speaker 1: I probably should have turned her. I should have taken
- 52:21Speaker 1: more time to look at his body language. Maybe he
- 52:23Speaker 1: wasn't going to bust me. Maybe I had time to
- 52:26Speaker 1: turn around and shoot him out four yards broadside. Maybe
- 52:29Speaker 1: I should have let him walk by, and you know, hey,
- 52:34Speaker 1: he's he's he'd maybe respond really good to a grunt.
- 52:37Speaker 1: He was up winged to me when I shot him,
- 52:41Speaker 1: So let him walk hit him with a grunt. He
- 52:42Speaker 1: comes back right. Maybe I could have done that. But
- 52:46Speaker 1: if Sinan's man, you, I can't do that. I mean,
- 52:54Speaker 1: this is what happened. Next time, I might be a
- 52:58Speaker 1: little more patient. Maybe I'll I don't know, And I
- 53:01Speaker 1: guess that's that's that's the more importantly what I what
- 53:03Speaker 1: I'm trying to get I guess is what's what's the
- 53:05Speaker 1: takeaway from this for you? I suppose Yeah, I mean
- 53:13Speaker 1: I don't know because I feel this is gonna sound bad,
- 53:16Speaker 1: but I feel like I would take that shot again. Um.
- 53:21Speaker 1: I was calm, I was collective. I I missed the target, right. Um.
- 53:29Speaker 1: What is the goal when you go out into the
- 53:30Speaker 1: timber to hunt a deer? Right to kill it? I
- 53:35Speaker 1: killed it, not the way I wanted, but I killed it. Um.
- 53:40Speaker 1: And if you kind of you go all the way
- 53:43Speaker 1: down to the common denominator of what I mean, it's
- 53:47Speaker 1: not what hunting is, but hunting is taking the life
- 53:51Speaker 1: of an animal. I recovered him. I just didn't do
- 53:55Speaker 1: it in time to save the meat. And that's that.
- 54:00Speaker 1: That to me is the biggest disappointment. Yeah. Yeah, man, Well,
- 54:07Speaker 1: I mean you you know, I mean you certainly have
- 54:09Speaker 1: felt the fields you've you uh you. I'm sure I
- 54:14Speaker 1: have learned something from this, and it's gonna change you
- 54:17Speaker 1: and it's gonna make you a better hunter in the future.
- 54:20Speaker 1: And um, at the same time, while like you've you've
- 54:23Speaker 1: you've identified some things that went wrong, some things that
- 54:27Speaker 1: lad to less than perfect outcomes. Um, what I think
- 54:31Speaker 1: is really really admirable. And I think that anyone listening
- 54:34Speaker 1: to this or who followed along with a story from
- 54:36Speaker 1: afar Um, I think you set a tremendous example of
- 54:40Speaker 1: just the that the commitment you had to finding this animal,
- 54:47Speaker 1: a lot of people would have given up a lot sooner.
- 54:50Speaker 1: And I think is it's it's so commendable. It's so
- 54:53Speaker 1: important that people do this, because this is the kind
- 54:55Speaker 1: of deer that a lot of folks would be like. Mah.
- 54:58Speaker 1: You know, even after a couple of times when you
- 55:00Speaker 1: mentioned you lost blood for fifteen minutes, some people bowl
- 55:02Speaker 1: after that, let alone after it starts to rain, you
- 55:05Speaker 1: lose blood. I know people that would quit after that
- 55:07Speaker 1: after walking around all day. But you kept going at it,
- 55:10Speaker 1: and two days later you found that buck that would
- 55:14Speaker 1: have gone completely to waste. Um would never have known
- 55:19Speaker 1: what would happened in that case, but at least you
- 55:21Speaker 1: were able to recover them because you kept after it.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And you can you can take something and learn from
- 55:26Speaker 1: from this experience. And I think that's um, that's a
- 55:29Speaker 1: that's a great thing. And I think a great example.
- 55:31Speaker 1: You sat there, damn so and something thing about it
- 55:34Speaker 1: is yeah, and The thing about it is I would
- 55:37Speaker 1: have done the same thing for a dough. Right. You
- 55:41Speaker 1: have to the animal that you're taking a life and
- 55:44Speaker 1: they deserve everything, So I don't know, they're the one
- 55:49Speaker 1: who's there. The animal is the one who pays the
- 55:52Speaker 1: ultimate sacrifice. Yeah, um, this is this is a good
- 55:58Speaker 1: This is a this is a really great even though
- 56:02Speaker 1: even though there's a lot of unfortunate elements to what happened,
- 56:05Speaker 1: which you've already you know, you've talked about. Um, it
- 56:08Speaker 1: is a powerful learning experience. I think that everyone listening
- 56:13Speaker 1: can kind of take from this that I think is
- 56:16Speaker 1: a helpful thing to people because I know many times
- 56:18Speaker 1: in the past when you or I have had some
- 56:20Speaker 1: stories that didn't go quite as perfect. Sometimes those are
- 56:24Speaker 1: the most helpful for other people because they need to
- 56:26Speaker 1: know that, yeah, you know, sometimes these things do happen,
- 56:29Speaker 1: and it's it's it's it's it's not it's not okay,
- 56:33Speaker 1: and that you we don't want to happen. You don't
- 56:36Speaker 1: want to happen again. But sometimes bad things happen despite
- 56:39Speaker 1: all the work and effort and time, and you need
- 56:41Speaker 1: to there's something to be said about understanding that, yes,
- 56:43Speaker 1: these things happen. We can move on from it, we
- 56:46Speaker 1: can get better from it. And I think, um, you
- 56:48Speaker 1: honestly sharing this story is is is a great thing
- 56:51Speaker 1: for people. So I appreciate that Dan um Ross's been
- 56:55Speaker 1: really quiet over there. What do you have any questions
- 56:58Speaker 1: or thoughts on all this with Dan, because I know
- 57:00Speaker 1: you've kind of had some kind of similar experiences over
- 57:02Speaker 1: your years too, Right. Oh yeah, I've had a lot of,
- 57:06Speaker 1: I mean situations that kind of played out the same way.
- 57:10Speaker 1: But I think the only way, really, the only way
- 57:13Speaker 1: you get better at it is just by I mean,
- 57:15Speaker 1: you can practice all you want and trying to make
- 57:18Speaker 1: it like automatic, but you just you gotta shoot deer
- 57:20Speaker 1: to get better at it, you know what I mean.
- 57:23Speaker 1: And and so like one of the things I was
- 57:26Speaker 1: thinking about when Dan was talking is is like if
- 57:29Speaker 1: anybody hasn't shot a lot of deer, and then they're
- 57:31Speaker 1: kind of like they're kind of like our buddy Peters,
- 57:33Speaker 1: kind of having that trouble where they're a little nervous
- 57:36Speaker 1: to shoot deer. Um, shooting deer is just you're gonna
- 57:40Speaker 1: get better if you shoot more deer. So I'd like
- 57:42Speaker 1: I'd focused on shooting a lot of doughs, um, eating
- 57:46Speaker 1: a lot of doughs and getting better at that so
- 57:48Speaker 1: that you know, when a big buckets in front of you,
- 57:50Speaker 1: you can you can make a count. I know I've
- 57:52Speaker 1: had a a couple of mix ups and a couple
- 57:55Speaker 1: of bad shots, and um, I've lost a couple of
- 57:59Speaker 1: deer um, sometimes just because I got probably just got
- 58:03Speaker 1: a little buck fever um. Another time maybe miss judge yard.
- 58:08Speaker 1: But it's really hard to mimic those situations like on
- 58:12Speaker 1: a range and and just shooting that targets. So just
- 58:16Speaker 1: getting yourself in those situations and and shooting deer will
- 58:19Speaker 1: make you a better hunter. So don't don't beat yourself
- 58:22Speaker 1: up too bad over you know bad shots are losing
- 58:24Speaker 1: deer because it's gonna happen to everybody, and it's gonna
- 58:27Speaker 1: make it better over the long run. But um, I
- 58:31Speaker 1: know it's made me a better hunter. I've become more
- 58:34Speaker 1: conscious of all my weaknesses and and when I have
- 58:37Speaker 1: to work on. But I know I did struggle with
- 58:39Speaker 1: that in the past. I know what I what's that
- 58:44Speaker 1: go ahead of us? I was just gonna say, like,
- 58:47Speaker 1: I do a good job getting myself in front of deer,
- 58:50Speaker 1: but the moment of truth has always been a little
- 58:53Speaker 1: bit of a struggle for me. But just yeah, all
- 58:56Speaker 1: those mess ups just they make it better over over,
- 59:00Speaker 1: over the long run. You can't beat yourself up over it.
- 59:02Speaker 1: You're going to be a better hunter because of all
- 59:04Speaker 1: the situations. Yeah, and you know, you can keep in
- 59:09Speaker 1: perspective and you can. You know, you want to feel
- 59:13Speaker 1: bad for the deer and you want to respect the
- 59:15Speaker 1: deer and everything, but it is and it's part of it,
- 59:18Speaker 1: and ultimately we're out there until deer or so there's
- 59:21Speaker 1: some bad things that can happen. But but um, you
- 59:26Speaker 1: don't beat yourself off too bad, you know, Yeah, yeah,
- 59:29Speaker 1: you do. You do everything you can to minimize the
- 59:31Speaker 1: chances of those things. You work as harder as it
- 59:33Speaker 1: possibly can, and then sometimes you accept the realities that
- 59:36Speaker 1: aren't always perfect and you grow from it. Um, but
- 59:41Speaker 1: you make it really good. It's a it's a horrible thing.
- 59:43Speaker 1: I've lost a lot of sleep over some some of
- 59:46Speaker 1: those years. It's terrible feeling, and you feel horrible before
- 59:49Speaker 1: the deer and you feel just terrible about the situation
- 59:52Speaker 1: and about the YouTube from it. Yeah, right, yeah, pretty much.
- 59:58Speaker 1: But what you're to find on the map. Um, I'm sorry, Ross,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: that too soon to start throwing the under the bus
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: of that one. Yeah, right, man, Um, he would see
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: he was he was thirty two yards and I saw
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: he was twenty five. That was the whole problem with that,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: And that could beat myself up for so long. But
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: you know, like just sway when it way goes, and yeah,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: next time, I'm going to make sure that I don't
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I don't make that mistake. And that's the thing I'm
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: sure that you know. Next time you're in a a situation
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: like that, Ross, you you're better had better stud to handle.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: And Dan, next time you're in a situation like this
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: where it's a fast moment, you gotta like heavily quartering away, Dear,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: you'll have you'll better know how to handle that situation. Um.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Same thing like for me when I've got a buck
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: coming in right towards me and then he opens up
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: a little bit. I think my issue with that, Nebraska, Dear,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: is very similar to your situation, except for yours was
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: it was quickly you thought you're gonna lose your shot
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: opportunity because he's quartering away and mine was quartering too sharply,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: and I was worried I was gonna lose my shot opportunity,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: so I probably should have waited one more beat and
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I didn't. And um, you know, these are these are
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: learning experiences. So all the things I've some things that
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I've learned to um over time, as you know, like
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you said to, you evolved as a hunter. Like initially
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: start off, you just feel like you gotta shoot deer.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: You gotta shoot gear and deers there, you gotta shoot it.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: And then eventually it's evolved if you start shooting dear
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: and you don't really have to shoot gear anymore, you know.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: And so when you get in those situations where you
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: gotta make quick shot or you gotta make tough shot,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: you can just you can just wait for something better,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you know. But when you're younger, you seem to like
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: go through that phase where you want to just shoot, shoot,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: shoot and take the first shot, take quick shot. You
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: don't really think it through. Um, But I think that's
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: just part of all part of growing. We all get
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: there at different different points and their hunting careers. But
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: but I think eventually you get to a point where
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you know, you just you don't even have to take
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: those shots. If they're not They're not going to be right.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: And that takes that takes a lot of a lot
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: of self control too, to know when when you can't
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: take those shots, because to your point, there's a lot
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: of pressure to when you when you're when it's in
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the window, when it's in range, there's a lot of
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: pressure on you with all the time and energy that's
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: gone into trying to get to this one moment. I
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: certainly have found myself in that situation where I look
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: back on something, I'm like, man, did I Maybe I
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: shouldn't have even taken the shot, But in that moment,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: it's I gotta get the shot. Um. That takes a
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: lot of probably maturity and experience and some hard lessons
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: learned along the way probably to to you know, for
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: each of us at different points in our lives, to
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: get to that point where there is a deer in
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: range and you just know that it's not it's not
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the right opportunity. That that's not easy. It's easier said
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: than done. Um, Dan, I know you probably have to
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: leave here pretty soon, right, um, real fast? Do you
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: have a second to to share it? One last thing
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I wanted to know is just we focus a lot
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: on what happened after the shot, But is there anything
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: about your setup or anything that you think led to
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: you actually getting that opportunity. Why do you think you
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: got the shot at this buck? Um I got I
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: got the shot at this book. I'm this is gonna
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: sound crazy. I'm almost sure he walked through my windstream,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: my my downwind cent stream to get to me. Um.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: So that terrain feature that I've mentioned earlier, my wind
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: was just cutting that right and he came from that direction.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I think that he I think the wind shifted. I
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: think he walked through it um at some point, which
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: it shouldn't have It probably shouldn't have played out like that.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: You know, there's a chance he could have busted me.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: But what I'm getting at is that's how aggressive I
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: was with the wind that night. Was Hey man, there's
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: a chance if this isn't gonna work, this deer comes
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: in a little too far to one direction, he could
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: he could bust me. And that's how aggressive I played
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: the wind. That's how aggressive I play my stand location
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: set up right, I mean, my goal is your goal
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: is to always make the deer feel like they are
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: confident in their their path and you're there to not
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: you're you're there to just you know, you're you're there
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: to surprise him. And that was the only deer I saw.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: He was the only deer I saw that night here.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: And what was he doing? Was he just cruising this
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: this kind of ridge system deal, do you think? Yeah, yep,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I think he came out of his bed on the
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: next ridge over um at the end of it, I
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: think he walked down that first ridge, dropped down into
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: that terrain feature and it was just gonna send check
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: that the ridge that um I was on, and then
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: dropped down into another one and crossed the road and
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: go into a cornfield. So he wasn't he wasn't there
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: to eat, he wasn't there to make signed. He was
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: there to straight up you know, he was looking for
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: those interesting Well that's um the heck of a buck man.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: That's one of your biggest bucks or your biggest buck ever. Right, Yeah,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you know, if I was gonna, if I was to
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: ever score him, I'm sure the bigger than anything I've
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: ever ever had. So as a beautiful deer, it's a
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: well deserved deer. And um man, I'm happy for you,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: glad that you ended up find him. Yeah, I appreciate it. Man.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Now you got some work to do. I do. I
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: do have some work to do, um, And I want
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: to I want to tell you the story of of
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: how close I've been getting to it, but you you
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: probably don't have time to hear it. Um. Do you
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: need to bounced now? I do, man, Unfortunately, I apologize.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: That's all right, me and Russ will continue the conversation.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: All right, Well, Congraturross and Mark. Good luck Man. I no,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: no one's rooting harder for you. Man. I appreciate it, buddy.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: We'll talk soon, all right. Before we move on to
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: stories from Ross, let's take a quick second to thank
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: our partners at White Tailed Properties and Spencer will take
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: it from here. This week with White Tail Properties, we
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: were drawed by Ben harshein adland specialist out of Iowa,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and Ben is going to be talking to us about
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: using aerial maps for hunting the rut. Yeah. So the
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: maps play a vital tool for rut strategy. I really
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: want to find a map that's gonna show me elevation
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: and topography and uh, that's important because I want to
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: be able to hunt rolling topography during the rut. I
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: also want to be able to use it to access
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: in and out during you know, whether it's morning, uh,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: late morning, early after or noon going in to cover.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I'm hunting cover during the route. I'm not hunting food sources,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: so I want to find some topography. I also want
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: to try to find the most secluded parts of the farm.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: What are the toughest places to get to just from walking?
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: What seemed like they're the safest from human intrusion. I'm
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: trying to find little ditches and draws that don't stick
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: out blatantly, aren't is easy to get to, like maybe
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: that big hardwood ridge that runs through. Try to find
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: those small nooks and crannies, deeper holes, and then uh
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: one thing that the map won't necessarily tell you what
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you can do. How Once you confirm some of those places,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: try to find the thickest stuff and then just uh
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: uh do a speed scout. Try to find those where
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: those trails are coming together in that thick cover, Get
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: in the tree and just hold on tight. If you'd
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: like to learn more and to see the properties that
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Ben currently has listed for sale, visit white tail properties
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: dot com. Backslash Hardshine that's h A R s h
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: y n E. So so ross um, let's continue this
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: and let's hear your story because you, um, you kill
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: a hell of buck too. I'm interested to hear. I
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: haven't really gotten the details of how all came together yet,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: So walk us through, kind of similar to how what
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Dan did you know? Walk us through your rut hunting
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: plans and then how this hunt came together. And I
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: know that when I say rutting plans and hunts, it's
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: all very limited, very small amount of time here. Maybe
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: explain why that is too. Your whole season has been unique?
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: What what do you What do you want me to say? First?
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I just said, you know, describe the whole your whole plan,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: because you've been very very conservative. Yeah, I just um,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the beginning of the year, I didn't have like too
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: many books. Like early in the season, I need to know.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I need to know there's a buck there. I need
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: to be confident, like when I get in the tree,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I need to know. I need to be confident that
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna kill something, you know, Like I'm just not
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I'm not excited about sitting in a tree and not
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: knowing and I could get a shot off anymore. I
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: guess I'm just I'm just okay, waiting for the right
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: time now. I don't know, it's just kind of gotten
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to that point. So this early in the season, I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: just didn't have any big bucks located. I didn't have
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: anything else too excited about, So I just kind of
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: put hunting on for a while until I knew a
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: couple of the areas that it was hunting, we're going
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: to get a little bit better. So I didn't really
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: get out until the first time I got out was um,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I think like the middle of October and all you
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: know around that fifteen sixteen seventeen somewhere in there. Um.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: But that hunt lasted maybe like ten minutes, I think.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: So it was in I'll tell you so it was
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: in the There's this area farm that like a there's
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: this big, huge community scrape every year in middle of October.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: I think I've told you this before. There's mature bucks
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: that will hit that during daylight starting middle of October,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: and you might get you should will generally get like
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: every single mature buck on that scrape at least once.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: So middle of October they start hitting it. Um, and
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: that's scrape. That's down in it's down this valley, and
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: then there's there's a bunch of like ridges and points
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: that come down to that scrape. So you couldn't probably
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: call it like a it's probably like a thermal hub
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: kind of area. I feel so um especially in the evening,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: like all those thermals everything is dropping down and everything's
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: just dumping right into that area where that scrape is
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: so um so like so that the first day it
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: was a kind of like I know exactly what my
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: problem is. And I've always tried to hunt that scrape
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: specifically and have screwed myself so many times because you
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: just you just can't hunt it. And I thought, I
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: tried to think of so many different ways to be
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: able to hunt the wind and and to be able
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: to get in there and not have gears and all
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: you or not have your wind swirl and all this,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: and I've got busted so many times. And uh, and
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: this year was the last time I was gonna even
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I'm not gonna mess around going down that scrape. I
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: think what I need to do, and they need to
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: focus on just obviously dear coming to and coming to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: a scrape and and leaving the scrape versus hunting that
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: script specifically, because that first time I went down there
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: in the morning and the wind was kind of sketchy.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: It was kind of that light, variable wind, and then
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I think I have a stand up down there. I
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: decided not to sitting that stand because I thought I
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: would get busted. Instead, I just said to put a
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: gilly suit on and go suck up in some rocks.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: And I don't know, it was probably it was probably
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: the first fifteen minutes of light. And the doe came
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: walking down and I could like that light breeze in
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: my face, you know, and I thought everything was fine.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: But she's sitting there like a hundred yards away from
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: me what I thought was up wind, and she's just
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: snorting and starting and starting. So I just pretty much
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: I just pretty much got out of there as fast
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: I could. It wasn't even like sun didn't even come
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: up yet. I just like packed up and I just
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: pretty much ran out of there. But so that's that's
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: what that's where I screwed up. And I think I'm
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: never gonna do that. I'm not gonna hunt that anymore.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I'm just I'm done with that. I've tried so much
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: and uh, so many times. So then the next time
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: I hunted was that next week, and um, I went
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: to a different farm and they just picked a corn.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: There's a bunch of waste and it's next to a
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: pretty good piece of property where there's some really nice
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: bucks in there. So I thought, I'll go in there
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: and I'll check the finger where they like to come out,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: and I'll look for some big tracks and she will
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: kind of sign I can find. Um, I'll just do
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: like a hanging hunt. So we're getting a lot of
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: those really light winds, which is weird fall, just lots
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: of light rayable winds, and I just wasn't feeling good
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: about the wind there. I thought it would just kind
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: of I didn't think it would be my favorite. It
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: was the right direction, but the way the current probably
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: would have been thermals and all that stuff I think
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: would have just dumped right down into where you were
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: going or coming from. So built on that and then
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I was wanted to hunt that scrape again, um, given
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: the time of here, because this is the twenty seven now,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: and I knew, okay, I'm not going down by the scrape.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: So instead I got up on one of the ridges.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: I don't know. It's probably about other than fifty yards
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: from the scrape, but it overlooks that valley. So in
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: this position at least I can have a wind a
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: little bit more consistent, but I can actually see what's
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: going on down there. I can observe and and then
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: it's also on the inside corner where I can catch
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: some some movements. So there's still bedding down the point
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: down all those little ridge points on the bluffs overlooking
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the creek, all kind of within a few hundred yards
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: of this strap. Um. So I'm sitting there off this
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: one corner, and right away I had like a dink
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: come through, and and then maybe a couple of dolls,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, a nice, nice eight
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: pointer comes comes up that valley and he's just like
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: bird dog and he's got his nose to the ground
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: and pretty nice buck, but not one I wanted to shoot,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: probably like a three year old, um nice buck. And
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: then he kind of went off, and I thought, oh,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: maybe it'll be a pretty decent nights. He kind of
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: came from the stripes. I'm assuming he hit it, and
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: then um, then later on he kind of came back
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: through and I was like, oh, that's kind of cool.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: He's really working. And then as light faded, um has
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: lfe started fade, you could hear that like unmistakable, like
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: walking over mature buck, you know when you see you here,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: like can you hear like a doll walk through the
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: woods and you can hear just like that crunch, crunch, crunch.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: But when I Buck walks and he's walking with purpose,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: it's just like, I mistake cool, you know what that
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: you know what I'm buck where? Yeah, I mean it's
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: almost it's almost like it's almost like it's making the
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: ground shake, you know, like he takes the ground shaking,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and it feels like that, and it's the way a way,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: you know, you just know he's just walking with purpose.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: And he's coming he's coming down, and he's coming down
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: to the valley and and I'm like, I just said
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: to myself, man, that's a good one. I just knew
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: that that's gotta be a big one. And all of
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: a sudden pops out and and I see him and
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: I'm looking at him and trying to of course, I
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: forgot my binoculars, which kind of hate that with a heaven,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: so I couldn't tell what the heck he was, because
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: it's kind of like that sunsetting kind of getting a
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: little less light. The tree is hard to tell, you know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: it's so hard to judge raxis when you get to
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: that point. So I'm looking a him and I can
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: see it right away. I can see his boys. It's like, oh, man,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: this bucket is this buck is huge. But then as
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: I got a glimpse of his rack, I'm like, I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: don't know, he kind of looked similar to that other book,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, he's big. So I'm just staring
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: at him and he's down there and just I don't
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: know what he's doing down there, and I'm just like,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: maybe I should just grunt him and see what see
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: if I can get a better look at him. So
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I grunted him two times, and that thing just he
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: just turned and walked right up the ridge right to
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: the tree. I mean, like, how often does that happen
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: with the mature book? And it was ridiculous, And he
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: just walks straight up and he's coming up towards me,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: and I'm looking at it. I'm looking at I'm trying
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: to like go through all these bucks that they have
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: gotten pictures of and trying to figure out who it
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: is and all this stuff, and he's coming up and
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: I'm like, no, it's not that one. No, it's not
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: this one. And I'm like, nah, I'm not going to
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: shoot him. So I'm sitting there and just sitting the
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: stand and even I wasn't even like ready to shoot
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: a gear right and uh, because they already rode him off.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm not gonna shoot And the next thing
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: you know, that buck is standing like six yards in
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: front of me broadside and I'm looking and I'm like,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: oh my god, that thing is huge and his body
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: not his rack as much, you know, I'm like, oh
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: my god, that he's huge. I wish I wish I
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: could like to hear your inner voice through this whole
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: thing as you were sitting there thinking to this, because
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I can just imagine like the the neurotic Ross hawsman
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in the back of here mind going crazy at this moment. Dude.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: It was, it was. It was crazy. Just caught me
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: up hard and I was like, no, im I can
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: shoot him. And he's there and like I'm gonna shoot him.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: And there's so many things that went through my like
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: my brain processed it so fast. It was like it
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: was like next thing, you know, I just let an
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: aeroflies and I shot, you know, like, but what happened
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: is he he uh, he's staying there. I could just
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: see that big like square. No, it was a big
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: Roman nose and I mean just huge head on him,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: a big body. And then at that point, like I
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: didn't even think about rack or anything like that, because
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: my goal for the year was just like I want
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: to shoot a once some short year, or I want
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: to shoot like a like I want to shoot like
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: one fifty year bigger or like a big mature buck.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: You know, I really want Actually this year, I really
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: wanted to hold out for something big and just try
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: to eat my take for once this because he's so colossal.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: What's that I said, You're not good at that? I
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: know him that this thing was huge. I feel like
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: I feel like every single year you always say, all right,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: I want to hold out for a really big one,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: and then it gets to be like November one or
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: second or somewhere there, and you start stressing out because
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: you haven't killed something yet, and then like the first
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: decent buffts body shoot that is That is how that
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: is how I've progressed, but now I'm actually getting their market.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I'm getting there. I'm getting to the point where I
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: can eat take this this time. You don't even wait
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: till November though. No, I know, I'm really kicking myself
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: now that that I'm done. But but he he just
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: stood he stood there, and I didn't know my I
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: was sitting. He's sitting right in front of me, like
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: you seeing the R in front of me, broadside him,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I think, just facing him, you know. So it's like
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the most awkward position to try to draw and shoot
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: right there. So I waited for him. He took a
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: couple of steps and then I just kind of tried
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: to do that little bit of slight turn when I
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: was sitting to get in position to draw, and he
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: just got a little spooky because so calm, like you
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: could um, you could hear anything, and it was just
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: so calm, and he just did that like where he
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: gets alarmed and they spin and they take off the run.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: So next thing, you know, I'm drawing as he's doing that,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: and I just mouthed grunted at him. And the second
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: craziest thing this buck did was he not only did
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: he come straight to the tree from a grunt call,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: but he stopped when I tried to put my mouth
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: grunted at him when he was taking off running, he stopped,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: and then that's when I shot him. So so then
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: I hit him right away. The shadow was like, it
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: was like good, good hit, And you're watching him and
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: he's taken off and you just wait for him tip over.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: He got down to the bottom and he just stopped
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and then he walked, and then then I couldn't see
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: him anymore, and I didn't hear crash or anything, So
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: I was like, what the heck with Once the deal,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: I thought I hit him good. And then then like
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Dan was talking and he started thinking about all doubting
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: yourself and think about all the other things that could
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: have happened, and I was like, well, maybe I hit
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: him in the liver and I hit him back a
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: little too far. Um, So I'm just like, you know what,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: I'm just gonna let him go and I'm just gonna
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: come in the morning and find them. And so I
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: long story short, I had a sleepless night. I think
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: I slept like forty five minutes. And then you're off
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: checking your phone. It's like eleven o'clock being it, and
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: then you're you know, you're sleeping on the thirty minutes
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: to check your phone at one o'clock and uh, the
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: next thing you know, I'm up at like three in
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: the morning drinking coffee waiting for white and uh. And
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: so I buzz out there in the morning and I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: get there right at first light, and I went to
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: climb up the stand to get kind of like an idea, okay,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: where I hit him and then where he ran two against.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: I could get picked out some spots a where last
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: saw And as I was climbing, it's climbing the tree,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I could see him laying down there. So he just
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: he uh, he tipped over right away down there. I
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: just kind of got a little apprehensive when I saw
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: him stop and walk a little bit. But it turns
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: out I did double along on. There was no big deal. Um,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and he's laying down there, and he's just my biggest,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: saddest buckets I've ever shot by a by a long
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: by a long shot. How old do you think. I
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: don't know for sure. He's one of those bucks where
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: I had pictures of him over the years, you know,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: but I just never really paid too much attention to him,
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: and he never really had a gigantic rack and it
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: stayed about the same size. So then, um, I had
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: pictures of him. I just got rid of the pictures.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: I never saved him. And then he just showed up
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: within that last week. And then it wasn't until after
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I walked up, I got up to him that I
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: recognized him. And he probably stayed about the same like
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: probably stayed about like that same like hundred thirty frame
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: size the last several years. So if I had to guess,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I would say he's I would guess him at like
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: six or more. But I'm not sure that's pretty. I
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: was saying about getting the teeth, Yeah, I know it was.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: That's why I shot him. So but man, it's a bummer.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: I h I really want to be out sit in
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: the stands. I'm gonna have to still some Doe TEGs
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: and enjoy watching some of the books from from the stand. Yeah,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: so what, um, what did you end up? What did
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: you Wayne? I don't know him. I don't know Mark
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: because I never so stupid, I never weighed him. You know,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you're getting getting in that where you just like got
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: him and you clean them off and then you're cutting
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: them up and then next thing you know, he didn't
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: weigh him, but I have no idea. I just shut
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: bocks it like that two palm mark quite a bit.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: But then but this one like was significantly larger than
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: one of my buddies. He he cuts up at the
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: deer or has got a tremendous amount of deer, and
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: he thought he would probably trust maybe like too forty
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: just by a picture. So I don't know if that
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: if that is what he was or whatnot, or if
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: he was more or less or whatnot. But he he
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: was huge, So yeah, that's cool, just a cool mature buck. Yeah,
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: I would I would definitely agree with that. And what
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: do you think when you're looking back on that, you know,
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: why why did that work out the way it worked out?
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: Was there something about like why was the location you
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: were in or any other decision you made the right one?
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: You know it? Historically I just knew what the bucks
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: did in that area just from what I've learned observed
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: in the past. Um, but I think the biggest takeaway
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: from me is just to not just to avoid hunting
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: that bottom, like just because that's strange there, and just
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: because that's where the bucks hit it. That's not the
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: best spot, you know, and the wind and stuff like
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: that down there. I gotta just get better at picking
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: the spot based on um, you know, hunting the wind,
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: a little bit better with that with those kinds of areas,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: because one of those things where you just like, you
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: see the bucks there all the time, get pictures of
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: the bucks there all the time. You know they're there,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: So that's where you want to hunt. But it's not
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: the smartest thing in the right If you can't knowing
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: that you're there, there's no point. Yeah, And I could end.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: For the last several years, I've been trying and trying
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: and trying to figure out and like testing wind and
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: throw a milk lead and you know, trying different spots
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: and I can't. I can't make it happen. But that's
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: the reason why they love it down there, you know.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: So so I think, um kind of reassessing, like hunting
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: those areas where they come and go to that straight
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: is what I'm gonna have to do more so get
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: away from it a little bit. But it's a great spot.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: Now you're white. You don't have an archery tag now
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: because it's fail but your wife can still hunt. Do
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: you have does she have a game plan for how
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: she's gonna try to kill a running buck? Anything that
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: you guys have have up your sleeves for the next
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: few days or week. Yeah, but she's playing on going
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: out in the morning as long as my son's sleeps
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: through the night. I think she'll be. I think she'll
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: be going out in the morning. And not really too
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: much of a game plan. Um, just your typical like
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: rut hunts, you know, like do betting areas and and
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: just those pinch points to and from them pretty much. Um,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: not nothing too crazy that way, not no rocket science
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: with it, pretty much just sitting sitting spots where those
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: frequent and where her bucks come to and from them. So, now,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: are you gonna be upset if she kills Tran one
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: of the bucks that you No, No, not at all. Tran.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: Tran was kind of Jason tran Is. He's pretty much
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: similar to uh to uh the buck I shot. You know,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: he's just got that goofy rack and he's ancient too,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: man that he's he's kind of like one of those
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: bucks where he's just going downhill, you know, that's what
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: he looks like and handlers are all funky this year
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: and stuff. But I'd be super excited if she if
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: she got a shot at him. He's just a huge
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: mature book and and uh probably a good one too.
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: I mean, if you want to talk about like getting
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: rid of like some of those I don't know what
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: guys talk about those bucks that are kind of like
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: bullies and stuff like that, and he's kind of like
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: that because I mean, his muzzles just all scarred up
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: and he gets busted up and not one of the
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: wanted on if you want want some of those bigger
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: act ones. I guess right that the young oncomers get
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: all scared off. I am probably, yeah, exactly, probably like
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: what the Holy Field does on your on your place
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: or what he used to do. Yeah, true, I don't
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I don't think that's happened anymore. But that's all right,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: it's all right. We're ready for closure. By yeah, I
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: think I think there needs to be closure. But um,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: but I'm actually thinking now that you know, we um
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: talk through your stuff, talk through dan stuff. I've re
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: um I've rethought through my thoughts for this podcast. I
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: think I'm gonna hold off on my Michigan story until
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: next time, because I feel like to tell the story
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: today would be too much of beginning in the middle
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: of the story, and there's not a satisfactory ending. I
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: think that if we wait till the next podcast, though,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I might have a good ending for my story. I
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: still think I can have a good end. Do you
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: think I might be able to still a good ending?
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: Because you know, you know what's happening Ross, Yeah, I
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: think so. Well, what's the deal? Now you're you're in
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Western Michigan, So how long a few more days? I'm
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: gonna brief hiatus because of some stuff with the Mediator crew,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: but I will have time to get back after this
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: buck um. But then, but then, when when does shotgun
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: start or a gun season start from Michigan? Hasn't met
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: the Sohong weekend to that? Yeah? No, um so yeah,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: that will throw a curveball in the things. But I'll
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: have a handful day still with the bow, and then
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: I am going to go out and hunt during guns
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: season two this year, which I usually don't do, but
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: I think I will. Yeah, what's up? What's your tought
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: presss of that? Ah? Well, I just think that well,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: Number one, my I usually go up to our Northern
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: Michigan deer camp, you know, and this year, just because
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: of my dad's schedule, we can't go up for the
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: first three days, so I'm not going to be hunting
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: up there. I'm just gonna be sitting around at home
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: twidling my thumbs or hunt. And I've done the gun
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: season sanctuary, you know, for many years now. But I
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: don't know, maybe it's time to just try hunting it.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Hunting a smart but maybe you know, I'm not so
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: much of a purist that I'm one percent opposed to
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: shooting a deer with the firearm. I'm okay with that.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Um So why not why not try it once? See
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: what happens? Who knows? Maybe my farm, maybe this farm
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: that I usually don't hunt during guns season, if i'd
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: hunted the last three years, maybe I would have killed
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: Holy Field or whatever. Um So with this new deer,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: maybe I'll I'd like to kill with the ball. Hopefully
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: that just happens before you but if not, I might
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: give this a shot. So but I think that do
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: you think he's not only a lot of people. I
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: think I saw a lot of people talking about it too.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: But do you think he showed up now because because
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Holyfield is dead, I still don't know, and now you're
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: getting me to possibly get into the story. But I
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: will answer your question. I think that maybe that could
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: have something to do with it, because because yeah, I
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: do think the holy Field is gone. That's my gun,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: because I still haven't gotten any settings or pictures or
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: anything of them. And now this new mature buck has
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: shown up that in the past, he's not shown up
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: during the road at all. He's been a deer that
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I've known of. This the third year that I've known
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: of this buck. But I've always thought he lives somewhere else.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: He'd show up like once a year on the property
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: I can on. But now he's shown up a bunch.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: And my best guess is that, yeah, it's probably because
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: holy Fields not around, you know. I mean, it seems
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: like too much of a coincidence that all of a
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: sudden his behavior would change so much. Um. And it
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: also happens to be the first year that holy Fields
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: not here in the last three years, you know. So
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's been an interesting cat and
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: mouse game, you know about it? Ross um and uh
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: And I will share the full story. I guess next
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: time around, hopefully with a better ending, and um, if
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: nothing else, to at least be a lesson learned. Um,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: that's what I always try to at least make myself
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: feel better with it by saying I learned something. So
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: we'll see. Um, but anything, make sure to make sure
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: you when you when you talk about the story, make
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: sure you go over all the details to all the hunts.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: It will be it'll be great to add all that
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: in there. Yeah, you're talking about the bail blind story,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: aren't you. Yes, I am. Yeah, don't leave that out
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: because that's great. You're right. I gotta make sure that
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: Dan's on the podcast, though, because that's a story that
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Dan really needs here. So that's how we'renna end this one.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: We will end this one by promising that I will
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: tell you the bail blind story, and I will tell
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: you no more until the next time Dan joins us
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: on the show to discuss this buck I've been hunting
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: and some crazy things that have happened, and hopefully a
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: happy ending to that story. So Ross, thanks for joining,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: thanks for sharing, Thanks for sharing your your pre rut
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: slash early rut action story, and um, we'll have more soon,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: and I am running late to get to the stand
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: here for my November eight I think it is today
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: my November no sorry, November nine hunt. So I'm running
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: late on getting this podcast out. I'm running late to
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: get to the tree stand, and there are bucks movements.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: We just need to get this thing out there. So
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: with that said, I just want to thank you for
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: tuning in. I want to wish you all the luck
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: in the world. Shoots straight, have a great time hunting
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: during the rut, and stay wired to hunt
