- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
- 0:14Have you ever tried to fix something, but the
- 0:16tool that you needed wasn't in the toolbox? It
- 0:19just doesn't work, right? Well, the same thing
- 0:23is true when it comes to building great relationships.
- 0:25There is a specific key required. And if you
- 0:29have it, you're in business. If you don't, it's
- 0:31probably not going to work very well. If you
- 0:34want to learn what it takes to build great relationships,
- 0:37stay with me. I'm Dave Drury, and this is Living
- 0:42on the Edge. Today, Chip Ingram continues his
- 0:44series, Caring Enough to Connect, Building Bridges
- 0:47to Those We Love. With a principle he says completely
- 0:50changed his own marriage from the inside out.
- 0:53You simply can't give away what you don't already
- 0:56have. If you don't know deep down in your own
- 0:59heart that you are already loved by God, Chip
- 1:02says you'll spend your whole life trying to manufacture
- 1:05love and acceptance from everyone around you
- 1:08instead. Well, now let's get started with today's
- 1:11message titled, You Can't Give Away What You
- 1:14Don't Possess. I'm talking about basically life
- 1:18lessons in terms of building a great family and
- 1:22just great friendships. Principles that have
- 1:23to do with marriage, parenting, friendships,
- 1:26your boss. And so let me do a quick review. Principle
- 1:30number one, the biggest lesson I learned was
- 1:32it all begins with God. on how to have great
- 1:41ones by his intent. The second principle was
- 1:44that everyone is desperately insecure. We looked
- 1:47at the very beginning of time and Adam and Eve
- 1:50and that once sin entered the world, we're all,
- 1:54varying degrees, we're just desperately insecure
- 1:56people. And so we said the passage was Genesis
- 1:59chapter three and then our practice was take
- 2:02off your mask. Authenticity builds genuine relational
- 2:05intimacy and hypocrisy destroys it. Principle
- 2:10number three is everyone behaves in a way that
- 2:13makes sense to them. When people act in immature,
- 2:17inappropriate, or even have patterns that appear
- 2:20absolutely dysfunctional and damaging, they're
- 2:24doing it for reasons that at least inside their
- 2:27head and from their experience, it makes sense.
- 2:30Principle number four, you cannot impart what
- 2:33you do not possess. In other words, if you do
- 2:36not like you, You will never love others. And
- 2:43I don't mean that like pop psychology. I mean
- 2:45like Jesus. You know, we say, what's the great
- 2:49commandment? Matthew 22, 38 and 39. You shall
- 2:53love the Lord your God with all your heart, with
- 2:55all your soul, with all your mind, and love your
- 2:58neighbor, how? As yourself. Now, if we're desperately
- 3:02insecure and I don't like me, It's really hard
- 3:08if I don't feel whole, if I don't feel loved,
- 3:12it's really hard to give away something I don't
- 3:16have. And so most of us, some point in time,
- 3:20figure out how to get affirmation. And then by
- 3:26God's grace, many of us come to know Jesus. And
- 3:29we know intellectually what's happened. We were
- 3:32pulled out of the kingdom of darkness and the
- 3:33kingdom of God. All of our sins have been forgiven.
- 3:36We have a new father. We have a new family. We
- 3:39have a new peace. We have a new future. We have
- 3:41a certain. Our significance has been established.
- 3:44We're the object of God's love. The prayer of
- 3:47the upright is his delight. We're loved like
- 3:49we will never ever be loved, totally apart from
- 3:51our performance. And we're a brand new creature
- 3:54in Christ that we live out in this fallen world.
- 3:56But see, 2 Corinthians 5 .17 says, if any man
- 3:59or if any woman is in Christ, The old things
- 4:02pass away. Tense of the verb, they're gone forever.
- 4:07Behold, all things become new. Tense of the verb,
- 4:10it's a process. Yes, I was in darkness, now I'm
- 4:13in light. I was a child of the darkness, now
- 4:15I'm a son of the light. Yes, I'm forgiven, I'm
- 4:18significant, I'm loved, I have the Holy Spirit,
- 4:20I have gifts, I've been sealed, my future, I'm
- 4:23the object of God's affection, but it's a process,
- 4:27and so when I begin my marriage, some of these,
- 4:31Things that I've learned, they stick, don't they?
- 4:35It's called the flesh. And so I thought to myself,
- 4:38not consciously, let's see. If I want to have
- 4:43a good marriage and I want the most important
- 4:45person to love me, accept me, and affirm me in
- 4:49ways that really matter to me, I'll figure out
- 4:52what she wants. And so, okay, a good husband
- 4:55is this, this, and this. I'll do that. Oh, I
- 4:57guess it's this too. And then I need to do this.
- 4:59And so I performed, performed, and worked, and
- 5:01worked, and worked, and worked. But an amazing
- 5:02thing happened. I was working in the relationship
- 5:05to get my wife to love me in ways that I thought
- 5:08were significant to me. And it was all built,
- 5:11came out of what? Came out of a hole. Came out
- 5:13of my need. It came out of manipulating and trying
- 5:16to do the right thing, to push the right buttons,
- 5:19to get someone to love me. I wasn't loving her
- 5:22unconditionally. I was loving her in a way that
- 5:26I hoped I'd get love back. The passage is Ephesians
- 5:305, 1 and 2. It says, therefore, be imitators
- 5:34of God as beloved children and walk in love just
- 5:37as Christ also loved you and gave himself up
- 5:40for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God
- 5:42as a fragrant aroma. If you open your Bibles
- 5:45to this one, you've got to do a little work,
- 5:46okay? There's two commands there. But you've
- 5:50got to open your Bibles because the therefore
- 5:52means something happened in verse 32 and 31 of
- 5:56chapter 4. As you turn there, you'll notice that
- 6:00the point is you can't impart what you don't
- 6:04possess. In other words, if you are not sensing,
- 6:07knowing, accepting the love that you already
- 6:11have from God, You can't give away love to others.
- 6:16You will be forced into some dysfunctional means
- 6:19of trying to manipulate, pretend, image cast
- 6:23to get people to affirm and to love you. But
- 6:27notice it says, therefore, command one, be an
- 6:31imitator of God, a mimic. Well, what are you
- 6:34supposed to mimic? Look in your Bibles. What's
- 6:35verse 32 say? Go ahead, look in your Bibles.
- 6:39therefore be kind to one another, right? Tenderhearted,
- 6:41forgiving one another, just as God also in Christ
- 6:45has forgiven you. Well, what's verse 31? Skip
- 6:47up. Therefore, he says, you're this brand new
- 6:50person in relationships, do something. Let all
- 6:52malice and wrath and anger and slander and all
- 6:54these negative attitudes, what's it say? Put
- 6:57them away, but instead be kind to one another,
- 7:00tenderhearted, forgiving one another. And then
- 7:03the verse that we looked at is, therefore be
- 7:05a mimic of God. You're to mimic God. Well, what's
- 7:09a mimic? A mimic, if one person does this, they
- 7:11do that. They do that, they do this. So what
- 7:14are we to mimic? We're to mimic to be kind in
- 7:18relationships the way God is kind. We're to be
- 7:20tenderhearted with people the way God is tenderhearted.
- 7:23We're to forgive or release or let people go
- 7:26the way God has let us go and forgiven us based
- 7:29on Christ's work. And so you have a command that
- 7:32says, mimic God. And did you notice the second
- 7:35command? It says, walk in love. And then it describes
- 7:39what love looks like. This isn't an ooey -gooey
- 7:41feeling. How do you love? Just as Christ loved
- 7:44us, well, how did he love us? An ooey -gooey
- 7:46feeling in his heart? Well, I hope there was
- 7:48some of that. But the Bible says the way he loved
- 7:50us, he gave himself up for us, a sacrifice, and
- 7:55he made his life a sacrifice he gave. He radically
- 8:00gave himself whether we responded or not. Now,
- 8:05here's what I want you to do. Between mimicking
- 8:08God and walking in love, in parenthesis, and
- 8:11you could put a circle around it in your Bible,
- 8:13what's the little phrase between those? Mimic
- 8:17God, how? As a beloved child. Or literally, as
- 8:23a dearly loved child. Do you understand what
- 8:26the passage is teaching? He's saying, I want
- 8:29you to love in this impossible way. Forgive like
- 8:31God forgives. Be kind like God forgives. Be compassionate
- 8:34like God. And I want you to live this amazing,
- 8:36supernatural, sacrificial life toward others.
- 8:38But where's the resource? As a dearly loved child,
- 8:44you can't give away what you don't possess. My
- 8:49experience is the average Christian may intellectually
- 8:51know they're loved. The average Christian doesn't
- 8:54feel loved. You are significant. You are valuable.
- 9:00You are loved by God today apart from anything
- 9:03you could ever do as much as you will ever be
- 9:06loved. There's nothing you can do to diminish
- 9:08his love. There's nothing you can do to get more
- 9:10of his love. He loves you. And the basis of the
- 9:14Christian life is not, I'm going to read my Bible,
- 9:15I'm going to pray, I'm going to go on a mission
- 9:17trip, I'll try and be a good Christian, I'll
- 9:18try and have really good morals. Now, God, will
- 9:20you accept me? Do you love me? No, no, no, no,
- 9:22no. Completely opposite. It's you've already
- 9:25been forgiven. I love you. I care for you. The
- 9:28object of my affection, you are my child now.
- 9:32Walk in a manner worthy of who you already are.
- 9:34And you don't read your Bible to get brownie
- 9:36points. It's because you like being together.
- 9:39I mean, I don't go have coffee with my wife and
- 9:41say, okay, excuse me, dear, do we have the little
- 9:44box? Talked with wife today. Okay, the next little
- 9:48box. Oh, help clean up around the house. Now
- 9:51do you love me? I do that. Are you ready for
- 9:56this? I like her. I just want to be with her.
- 10:02She loves and accepts me. The Christian life
- 10:06is knowing, believing and feeling that you are
- 10:11so loved and accepted that now you can be a giver
- 10:15in relationships. And no relationship works if
- 10:21ultimately your desire is to get something from
- 10:24it. If you pretend to give affection or give
- 10:27it, but the string is, I will be affectionate
- 10:30if you do this. If you give gifts so that this
- 10:33will happen. If you play little games to manipulate
- 10:36one another, what happens is as soon as the other
- 10:38person isn't coming through, then what happens?
- 10:41You're hurt, you're rejected, you're angry. See,
- 10:44God's not asking you to be nice to your mate
- 10:46or nice to your kids or nice to your parents
- 10:48or be a good old Joe out there in the marketplace.
- 10:51He's asking you to mimic God. Treat them the
- 10:55way Jesus would treat them if he was walking
- 10:57around inside your body. And you do need to remember
- 10:59he is, right? He dwells in you. How in the world
- 11:03can you do that? You can only do it when you
- 11:06so accept, know, and believe that you are dearly,
- 11:10dearly loved by God. Otherwise, I jot in my notes,
- 11:16until I find my significant security and value
- 11:19from my relationship with Jesus, Every relationship
- 11:23will be a dysfunctional attempt to get love and
- 11:26acceptance from others through my performance,
- 11:28manipulation, looks, barter or deceit. You're
- 11:35listening to Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.

- 12:00back to today's lesson. Can I tell you the greatest
- 12:03thing that will ever happen in any of your relationships
- 12:05is for you to really believe not just with the
- 12:10head, but from the heart, that you are so loved
- 12:14by God that you are now secure enough to risk
- 12:18loving and caring and giving, even if it doesn't
- 12:22come back. And so here's the practice. Loving
- 12:25others demand I learn to know, accept, and feel
- 12:28God's unconditional love for me. You need to
- 12:31know, accept, and feel God's unconditional love
- 12:36for me. And if you feel like you're a little
- 12:38behind on this, I was probably a Christian at
- 12:40least 10 years and a pastor before I realized
- 12:44how much of my energy and my service to God was
- 12:47really about trying to gain his approval and
- 12:50people's approval rather than living out of being
- 12:53already loved. Let me give you some specific
- 12:56ways to go to work on this. The first one is,
- 12:59how do you know? Knowledge is an intellectual
- 13:01issue. Jot down, if you would, Romans 5 .8. Romans
- 13:055 .8 says, while you were yet a sinner, Christ
- 13:09demonstrated his love for you and that he died
- 13:12for you. So, I mean, before you even join the
- 13:16family and those people who choose not to join
- 13:18the family, those people who God loves them,
- 13:20they won't receive the benefits of that love
- 13:23because of their pride and their unwillingness
- 13:26to surrender to his love. But isn't it good to
- 13:30remember to know God loves you apart from your
- 13:33performance? Now, it doesn't mean your performance
- 13:35isn't important because that's the way I express
- 13:39my love to him, but you can't earn it. Well,
- 13:42then how do you accept God's love? How do you
- 13:45get where, just being the regular old normal
- 13:48people that we all are, how do you get where
- 13:50you begin to know and accept that you really
- 13:54are loved so you don't have to manipulate and
- 13:57perform and do all this stuff that, by the way,
- 13:59we will all do to some degree until we die, right?
- 14:04Well, first of all, I think jot down, if you
- 14:06would, in your notes, Psalm 139. Here's what
- 14:10God thinks of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully
- 14:15made. God doesn't compare you to the person on
- 14:19the front of Cosmo or people. God doesn't compare
- 14:22you to someone on the front of Fortune 500. You
- 14:25are fearfully and wonderfully made. The all -knowing,
- 14:29all -powerful, all -wise God of all the universe,
- 14:33and we're just this one little tiny part of it,
- 14:34created you. And he loves just what he made.
- 14:40Like we say, oh, that's a Rembrandt. What a great
- 14:42work of art God says. He made you and then he
- 14:45steps back and goes, you want to see greatness?
- 14:48There it is. Try looking in the mirror this week.
- 14:51I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. I look exactly
- 14:55how God wanted me to look. God's standard of
- 14:58beauty and value and significance is the only
- 15:00one that matters. Tell you what, you begin to...
- 15:04renew your mind. I started writing these things
- 15:06on cards and that verse, Psalm 139, I began to
- 15:09pray them back to God. Until you like you, you
- 15:14can't love other people. And by like, I don't
- 15:16mean that you're content with, you know, behavior
- 15:18or issues that you know are ungodly. I mean where
- 15:21you say, you know something? I have these strengths
- 15:24and I have these weaknesses and this is the package
- 15:27that God made. And the strengths are to build
- 15:30confidence and a part of God's glory. And the
- 15:32weaknesses are so that I'm always dependent on
- 15:34other people and realize that I can't make this
- 15:37little world by myself. I can never make it without
- 15:39others. The second way I think you get a grasp
- 15:42of how loved you are is by the price or your
- 15:46value to God. I mean, if we lined up, can you
- 15:49imagine? What if we lined up everyone on this
- 15:51back wall, every single person, and then we brought
- 15:54in a multi, multi -billionaire, and we said you
- 15:56can only Choose one person and you have to pay
- 15:59$1 billion for this one person. And when you
- 16:03pay that, you can have them and they're yours.
- 16:06And what if he looked and looked and looked and
- 16:08did research and did all kind of things and looked
- 16:11at everything that everyone in this whole room
- 16:12brought and then he said, you, $1 billion for
- 16:15you. Or he said, you. Or he said, you. And then
- 16:18all of us are here and he writes out a check
- 16:20for $1 billion and you step out. Would you not
- 16:24feel pretty good about yourself? Huh? Jot down,
- 16:29would you, 1 Corinthians 6, 19 and 20. God didn't
- 16:34pay a billion dollars for you. Do you not know
- 16:37that you are not your own? That you have been
- 16:42purchased with a price. Jesus, all knowing, all
- 16:48powerful, looking down all the corridors of all
- 16:51time and eternity, said, when your name comes
- 16:55up on the computer screen, of the eternal Godhead,
- 16:58I'll pay the blood of my son for the person sitting
- 17:03in your seat. That's how much you matter. See,
- 17:07part of us, we just need to begin to grasp how
- 17:11valuable we are because of who made us and how
- 17:15valuable we are because we've been purchased.
- 17:18And then I think we need to practically not just
- 17:20know, not just accept. But my journey has been,
- 17:24how do you feel? How do you get that from here
- 17:27to here? And as I read Scripture, for the last
- 17:3230 years, I took this little book on the character
- 17:35of God, and there's lots of chapters. It's a
- 17:38book on God's character, the knowledge of the
- 17:40holy bitoser. But I've read the goodness of God
- 17:43probably 10 times more, and on the love of God
- 17:4610 times more than any chapter in this book for
- 17:4830 years. In some stages for a decade at a time,
- 17:51I read at least a chapter a week or more. And
- 17:54then I would write on a card a little quote and
- 17:57a passage. And the only way I could learn to
- 18:00get it from my head to my heart was to take that
- 18:03truth and pray it to God and ask him to make
- 18:06real in my heart what is true and help me to
- 18:09feel it. And then I learned from scripture from
- 18:11David that if I would sing that and share that
- 18:14with God and rejoice over it, I would begin to
- 18:17emotionally experience it. What if you said to
- 18:20yourself as your eyes open in the morning, you
- 18:23could hear the Lord saying, Zephaniah 3 .17,
- 18:26I am the Lord your God. I am with you. I will
- 18:32protect you and cover you with my love. I rejoice
- 18:36over you with singing. What if God wasn't down
- 18:39on you? What if he really likes you? What if
- 18:42he has a great plan for you? And what if you
- 18:45are so significant and valuable already that
- 18:48what other people think matters, but it doesn't
- 18:52dictate who you are? You see, you can't impart
- 18:56what you don't possess. And as you listen to
- 19:00the Apostle Paul building the church, what did
- 19:02he pray? Chapter one, I pray that the eyes of
- 19:05their heart might be enlightened, that they might
- 19:07grasp or understand the strength of your power,
- 19:10the power of Christ's resurrection dwelling in
- 19:13them. And then chapter three says, I bow my knee
- 19:15with all the family of God that you might be
- 19:18strengthened in your inner man so you could comprehend
- 19:20beyond. Just intellectual aspects. What is the
- 19:23height and depth and length and breadth? And
- 19:26to know, and the word is by way of experience,
- 19:28God's love for you. Having been deeply rooted
- 19:32and grounded in faith. See, I'll tell you what.
- 19:36Relationships begin with really understanding,
- 19:38hey, it's all about God's way of doing it. Accepting
- 19:42yourself and one another. We're all a bunch of
- 19:45desperately insecure people. That people really
- 19:48do behave in ways that make sense to them, but
- 19:50not usually to us. And that I just can't give
- 19:53away what I don't have. And maybe the greatest
- 19:55thing I could do for every relationship is to
- 19:58know, accept, and believe. And to feel that I
- 20:03am loved for who I am apart from any performance
- 20:05today by the eternal God of the universe. And
- 20:10then kind of take the pressure off of... trying
- 20:12to impress you all as much I try to impress you
- 20:14and try and look or do different things that
- 20:17get your affirmation and just kind of say, you
- 20:20know, Lord, you know, if they like you today,
- 20:22they kind of hate you tomorrow. That was the
- 20:24way with you, right? You know, they're cheering
- 20:26one day, crucifying you three days later. There
- 20:29was something to the heart of Christ who said
- 20:31he didn't entrust himself to people. We're all
- 20:34a bunch of fallen human beings, but you're valuable.
- 20:38And he wants you to be a giver. And he, loves
- 20:42you just the way you are. You're listening to
- 20:47Living on the Edge with a message titled, You
- 20:50Can't Give Away What You Don't Possess. If you
- 20:53ever miss one of these daily messages, We're
- 20:59in a series called Caring Enough to Connect,
- 21:01building bridges to those we love. And if you'd
- 21:04like to catch anything you missed, including
- 21:06Chip's special interview with Aaron Pierce, subscribe
- 21:09to the Living on the Edge podcast. Real love
- 21:13only flows out of people who already know deep
- 21:15down that they're loved by God. And that's just
- 21:18as true for the hardest relationship in your
- 21:21life as it is for the easiest one. If there's

- 22:213007, Sewanee, Georgia 30024. Well, now here's
- 22:27Chip Ingram. As we close today's program, I would
- 22:30just bring your mind back to those prayers that
- 22:34I quoted by the Apostle Paul. Isn't it interesting?
- 22:38These people living in such a difficult time
- 22:40and in a difficult place, that what he prays
- 22:43for them is that they would be able to grasp,
- 22:46that they would understand, not just with their
- 22:48mind, but with their heart. In fact, he prays
- 22:50that beyond their human comprehension, that we
- 22:55would understand and grasp and feel and experience
- 22:58the love of God. Could I just ask you to just
- 23:02lean back and think of how you would think differently
- 23:05and relate differently if you could hear in your
- 23:09heart God saying, hey, today, I'm with you no
- 23:13matter what. Hey, I'm not down on you. I love
- 23:17you. I'm for you. What if you believe just even,
- 23:21as you and I are talking right now, that, you
- 23:23know, today is a part of an amazing and a great
- 23:27plan that God has for my life. And he literally
- 23:30loves me and just wants me to kind of have my
- 23:33spiritual antenna up and listen to him and take
- 23:36the next step that he shows me so he could give
- 23:39me the very, very best in life. You see, when
- 23:43you begin to internalize how lavishly God loves
- 23:46you, only then can you begin to pass it on. I
- 23:50can't imitate unconditional kindness and love
- 23:53and forgiveness unless I've experienced that.
- 23:56And so what we're really talking about here is
- 23:58you saying to the Lord, Lord, will you help me
- 24:03grasp and understand how much you love me? And
- 24:06then, you know, it's not just some ooey -gooey
- 24:08feeling. It's getting into the scriptures. It's
- 24:12trusting the promise that draw near to God and
- 24:15he'll draw near to you. It's arranging your life
- 24:19where you actually experience God's love. Because
- 24:23there are some relationships that are always
- 24:25going to be hard, and you cannot give away what
- 24:28you don't possess. Unconditional love and forgiveness
- 24:33for some people in your life, I call them hard
- 24:37relationships, can only be achieved when you
- 24:40receive that same love. That's Chip Ingram and
- 24:44the end of today's program. Join us next time
- 24:46as we continue our series, Caring Enough to Connect,
- 24:49here on Living on the Edge. Today's program is
