- 0:28So, pull up a chair, join us around the table,
- 0:31and let's dive right in.
- 0:32Rachel Lamb Brown: What does it mean it leave a legacy?
- 0:33Is it something you inherit, something you choose, or both?
- 0:37Today's guests grew up in one of the most
- 0:39recognized ministry families in the world.
- 0:41But their journey hasn't always been easy.
- 0:43They'll share the defining moments
- 0:45that tested everything they believed
- 0:47and why what you build today can impact generations to come.
- 0:50Welcome to "Friends from the Table."
- 0:52I'm your host Rachel Lamb Brown, and I'm here
- 0:54with my co-host, Cindy Johnston, welcome.
- 0:57Cindy Johnston: Hello, thank you.
- 0:58I'm so honored to be here today.
- 0:59Rachel: Excited about the show today.
- 1:01And we're so excited to welcome Kelly Copeland
- 1:03and her niece, Courtney Copeland.
- 1:05Kelly Copeland: Thank you so much for having us.
- 1:06Courtney Copeland: We're so glad to be here.
- 1:07Rachel: So, Kelly, you are
- 1:09the daughter of incredible ministry giants, Kenneth
- 1:13and Gloria Copeland, who literally spread the gospel
- 1:17around the world, impacted millions.
- 1:19When you think about your parents,
- 1:21what do you think has given them
- 1:23the lasting key to longevity?
- 1:27Kelly: I really believe part of that
- 1:29and maybe the major part of it is
- 1:31the decisions they made, how they would start
- 1:34is still how they are.
- 1:36Like when they said our core values,
- 1:38you know, we're we're not gonna ask
- 1:42for a place to preach.
- 1:43In other words, God is our source.
- 1:44We're not gonna borrow money.
- 1:46God is our source.
- 1:47All of the things like that, and they said,
- 1:49"If it's in the Word, that's how we're
- 1:51gonna conform our life."
- 1:52In other words, God is our source,
- 1:54really boils down to everything they've ever done,
- 1:57he was it.
- 1:58So, if he asked them to do something impossible,
- 2:01they could go, "Okay, that might feel
- 2:04a little scary, but you just say okay,
- 2:07and you put-- you start putting
- 2:09in your mouth."
- 2:10But many times he would ask them
- 2:11to do something impossible and it would seem possible.
- 2:14And they would be, "We can do that."
- 2:16And that spirit of faith would come on them.
- 2:18So, I think when you make a decision
- 2:20and it's, I'm conforming my life
- 2:23to God's words, my dad's always said,
- 2:24"You never have to change."
- 2:26So, in the changing times, you can change methods,
- 2:30but you don't have to change your core,
- 2:32who you are, how you live with God.
- 2:34How you live with God is how you live out here.
- 2:38There's really not an accusation, really,
- 2:40that people can bring against you,
- 2:41even though none of us are perfect.
- 2:43Rachel: Yeah, it's you're unshaken.
- 2:46When you live a life of faith, it's like,
- 2:48you're unshaken because your life is rooted
- 2:51in the Word of God, and the Word of God
- 2:52doesn't change, and the promises of God
- 2:54don't change for your life.
- 2:55And that's something that you can hold on to.
- 2:57Kelly: He's so-- he's such the foundation
- 2:58that even if you fall, you're like, where'd you fall?
- 3:02Jesus. He's the foundation.
- 3:04I mean, if that's your life,
- 3:06then you're not ever afraid of failure, really,
- 3:11to fail, you fail sometimes.
- 3:13That's not the end.
- 3:14Courtney: I think something too that made them--
- 3:16because you asked like, what do you think like,
- 3:19you know, made this happen.
- 3:20I've heard my grandfather say so many times,
- 3:22"I don't have any more faith in you maybe,
- 3:24but I might be more obedient."
- 3:26And I think their obedience to what God was
- 3:29telling them to do in moments
- 3:31where it made absolutely no sense,
- 3:33resources weren't there, just take the first step,
- 3:35take the first step.
- 3:36And they were so obedient.
- 3:38They're known as faith people,
- 3:40but their obedience is astonishing, yeah.
- 3:44Rachel: You grew up in this family
- 3:46and tell us a little bit about your story, Courtney.
- 3:49Courtney: Well, we joke about all the time.
- 3:51I feel like I came out of the womb praying
- 3:53in tongues.
- 3:54I just thought everyone prayed in tongues.
- 3:56I thought everyone knew what, you know,
- 3:58miracles, lame people walking
- 4:01and blind eyes opening.
- 4:02I thought that was normal.
- 4:03And then in middle school age, you know,
- 4:05I realized, "Oh, people think we're crazy
- 4:07for believing in some of these things."
- 4:09And I was always really confident
- 4:12in my authority as a believer.
- 4:14You know, I was going through something recently
- 4:15and my mom looked at me and she was like,
- 4:17"The little girl that was telling the storm
- 4:19to leave the sky is still in you."
- 4:21And it's like that was just so instilled in me,
- 4:23the authority that we walk in as true children of God
- 4:28was really consistent in my life.
- 4:30Where I kind of fell into just harder times
- 4:33was my understanding of God's character.
- 4:36There was things going on in my life,
- 4:38I was like, "God, how could you let this happen?
- 4:40I don't-- if you're so good, you know, why are
- 4:42these things happening or why is this so hard?"
- 4:44And I had a really amazing experience in Africa.
- 4:48I felt like I was kind of like a Jonah
- 4:50in the whale moment, where this pastor in Africa,
- 4:52you know, called me out of the group
- 4:54and just really prophesied over my life,
- 4:56spoke into my life.
- 4:57I was like, "Man, if I can't even escape you
- 4:59out here, you know, maybe there really
- 5:02is something that you're calling me
- 5:03to outside of what my grandparents' calling
- 5:06looks like."
- 5:07Because to be honest, I don't want what they have.
- 5:10The responsibility, and you know watching
- 5:11your parents, the responsibility
- 5:13that it takes to live a life and of integrity
- 5:17that they live to be on a stage and be
- 5:19responsible every day--
- 5:20Rachel: Well, I also think just the pressure--
- 5:22Courtney: Of course.
- 5:23Rachel: And the commentary from all the people,
- 5:24all the things, it's a lot.
- 5:27And the weight of it, and to steward it well
- 5:29can be difficult at times.
- 5:30Courtney: And I didn't want any part of it.
- 5:32So, it really took the Lord showing me
- 5:35that my walk with him and my calling
- 5:37even into ministry, which is definitely more
- 5:39on the business side.
- 5:40I am in the background, behind the camera
- 5:4395% of the time unless it's a day like today.
- 5:47But I'm usually in the back, and God gave me a gift
- 5:49to do that.
- 5:51And I love my job working at the ministry now,
- 5:53and I love getting what I'm doing,
- 5:55and my life looks so different from
- 5:57my grandparents, but we need both.
- 5:59And so, I think, a lot of people
- 6:00have a misconception that if their legacy
- 6:02looks one way, that the way they
- 6:04fulfill their part of the legacy has
- 6:06to look the same, and that's not really the case.
- 6:08And so, it takes all of us, you know, coming--
- 6:11people ask all the time, who's the successor
- 6:13of Kenneth Copeland, who's it gonna be?
- 6:15And when my dad answers, my dad said, "It's all of us."
- 6:19Kelly: It's even our partners.
- 6:21Our partners are as much successors.
- 6:24I mean, I look at Creflo and-- Dollar, and Creflo
- 6:27is a successful successor.
- 6:30But everybody leading their lives at work,
- 6:33in their business, in their churches,
- 6:35they are a successor, and I think dad
- 6:37always saw it that way.
- 6:38Courtney: Yeah, and that's how we see it.
- 6:40It takes, you know, we have so many
- 6:41family coming back to work at the ministry.
- 6:43It's gonna take our whole family,
- 6:44but like you said, it's gonna take
- 6:46our partners, it's gonna take our staff.
- 6:47Like, there is a legacy you can leave.
- 6:49It doesn't have to be a copy and paste though.
- 6:51Rachel: I love that.
- 6:52And for a while you were at KCM for like five years,
- 6:54like leading the missions and doing all-- you know,
- 6:56incredible work.
- 6:58But then you moved away for a season to L.A.,
- 7:01tell us a little bit about that little detour that you took.
- 7:04Courtney: I needed to touch some grass
- 7:06and get out of the bubble, get out of the KCM bubble.
- 7:09I needed to like, I just needed
- 7:12to understand why do people even need faith?
- 7:15I didn't know I needed this, but now looking back,
- 7:17I can understand what my, you know,
- 7:20trajectory was.
- 7:21And I went out to L.A.
- 7:23with no money, and I started applying for jobs.
- 7:28Like, I was applying to be a waitress.
- 7:30I like, truly was like, how do I survive out here?
- 7:32I knew my skill set was in marketing.
- 7:35I got my first big girl job.
- 7:37And the Lord just moved me so strategically
- 7:41through different businesses and places to the point
- 7:43where I ended up owning my own
- 7:45podcast studio in L.A.
- 7:46And what the Lord was doing with me in Los Angeles
- 7:49is exactly what I'm doing now here back at KCM just
- 7:52on a bigger scale.
- 7:54And he was able to trust me with those seasons
- 7:57and those times that now I'm back,
- 7:59you know, doing all of the media,
- 8:00and marketing, and all the things at KCM.
- 8:03But I needed the-- I don't think the Lord
- 8:06wanted me to struggle the way that I struggled
- 8:08in L.A., but I think looking back,
- 8:11now I can see God's faithfulness through my own scenarios
- 8:15versus believing it from all the stories
- 8:16that I had heard from the people before me.
- 8:19And so, I was able to depend on God
- 8:20and cry out to God and needed God.
- 8:22So, now that I'm back doing my job,
- 8:24it's like, "Oh, I get it because I believe
- 8:25and I've lived this."
- 8:27Rachel: What do you think is the biggest lesson
- 8:28that he taught you in that season?
- 8:32Courtney: Consistency.
- 8:33I think I've-- I was riding
- 8:35the fumes of my grandparents' anointing for so long
- 8:38that when I got out there and I wasn't grounded
- 8:41in community with family, it was like what I
- 8:44could kind of get away with through my calling
- 8:48and through my family legacy as far as just like,
- 8:51"Oh I do well under pressure," AKA,
- 8:53I don't prepare for anything, you know?
- 8:55Like, I-- the Lord put me in moments where I really
- 8:59had to do the work myself.
- 9:00Like, I had to spend my own time with the Lord.
- 9:02I had to write my own devotional time versus
- 9:04just listening to "The Believer's
- 9:07Voice of Victory" broadcast every day
- 9:08just playing in the living room.
- 9:09You know, like, it really forced me to step
- 9:13into my own consistency as my own person.
- 9:15Cindy: And I think many of us, I grew up
- 9:17in a preacher's home as well.
- 9:18And when that's all that you see
- 9:20and all that you know, there comes that point
- 9:22where you have to know it for yourself,
- 9:24and that's exactly what y'all have all done
- 9:27and I applaud you for that.
- 9:28Kelly, carrying on this legacy, what does
- 9:31that look like for you at this time?
- 9:35Kelly: You know, there's so many ways you
- 9:36could define legacy.
- 9:38And, for me, it's very tempting, I think,
- 9:41in ministry families to feel like you
- 9:43were handed something.
- 9:45And I don't guess anybody gets
- 9:49out of being a preacher's kid without, you know,
- 9:51making a-- taking advantage of that
- 9:53at some point or other.
- 9:54You know, like, "Don't you know who I am, or?"
- 9:56That never-- I tried to teach my kids not to do
- 9:58that, but Max would come in and go, "Don't you know
- 10:01who I am?"
- 10:03You know, he only did it with-- my son Max,
- 10:04he did it a couple of times.
- 10:06But he got in trouble for it, and I said,
- 10:08"Max, don't you know that because papa is papa,
- 10:14he's Kenneth Copeland, he has to serve more.
- 10:17And I think that when I was teaching my kids,
- 10:19it really landed home in me,
- 10:22that you could look at inherited-- a legacy
- 10:24as an inheritance you inherit, or you could look at it
- 10:27as I am the inheritance to Kenneth and Gloria Copeland,
- 10:32that they poured into me, they should be able
- 10:34to get something out of it in life.
- 10:36You know, that they spent time
- 10:39raising me, they spent time teaching
- 10:41me the Word, and teaching me how to walk
- 10:43and live by faith, teaching me how to get
- 10:45through hard times, you know, teaching me how
- 10:47to find my answers in the Word,
- 10:48and how to put it in my mouth
- 10:50when I didn't want to.
- 10:51And how to, you know, not be led by emotions.
- 10:54I had to learn how to live with my emotions
- 10:57in my trouble with the Lord.
- 10:59I mean, not trouble with-- I guess that was said right.
- 11:02In my trouble walking with the Lord,
- 11:05I learned how to live with my emotions
- 11:09supplying what they're supposed to.
- 11:11Information, hey, there's something going
- 11:14on down in there, and you need to talk
- 11:15to me about it.
- 11:17That's the life I got with Jesus on my own,
- 11:19and I'm passing that and the faith down
- 11:22to my daughter, Emily, who's still at home, still 15.
- 11:26She gets the benefit of all my lessons
- 11:28learned in front of her, you know,
- 11:30these last few years.
- 11:31But I feel like, it's more than--
- 11:33if I see all that coming out of her, this is
- 11:38what blesses my heart, and I think it's what
- 11:40blesses my parents when-- and when they see
- 11:43Courtney doing what she's doing, or me, or John,
- 11:45or Terry, or any of the grandkids.
- 11:49When I see Emily share with somebody what
- 11:52she's learned walking in my household,
- 11:55I feel like this is the heart of the Lord,
- 11:57when we are his inheritance.
- 11:59His inheritance is in the saints.
- 12:02And when we lead our life like that, it's less
- 12:04about ourselves and more about a walk
- 12:06with him and taking-- not turning our back.
- 12:09If I could just say a word right now
- 12:11to the next generation.
- 12:12You know, don't throw away what your parents--
- 12:14I know we didn't do it right,
- 12:16and one day you're gonna have kids
- 12:17and they're gonna tell you that you did not do it right.
- 12:20So, it's time to sow a good seed,
- 12:22be gracious to your parents, but also ask the Lord what
- 12:25did they give me?
- 12:26You know there's a lot of people
- 12:28that they did not have a good parenting situation.
- 12:31They didn't have a good dad, didn't have a good mom.
- 12:33But you did always have the Lord.
- 12:35Even if you didn't know him, he was walking with you.
- 12:38And he's been there the whole time,
- 12:40and he's there now to help.
- 12:43It's really about what's coming out of us.
- 12:45And that the opportunity to walk in the legacy
- 12:49and as an inheritance is never over
- 12:51until the day you die.
- 12:53You know, you have a chance on your deathbed to turn
- 12:56it around.
- 12:58Rachel: That's so good.
- 12:59And it's so cool to see, you know, the--
- 13:00just the generations like, the kids, and the grandkids
- 13:03and, you know, the nieces, and the nephews,
- 13:06and the uncles and the aunts,
- 13:07and everybody, it's really such
- 13:09a beautiful legacy of faith that started with your dad.
- 13:13I'm curious, Kelly, how do you honor the past,
- 13:17but still embrace the future and new things?
- 13:20Honor the old, but embrace the new?
- 13:23Kelly: I think I learned a little
- 13:24bit of a lesson in that lately
- 13:26in the last ten years, because there were things in me.
- 13:28Like, when I got healed in my emotions,
- 13:30I started talking about freedom.
- 13:32I started talking about your soul.
- 13:34I had to go find that.
- 13:35We didn't really talk about the soul.
- 13:37So, I had to go find that with the Lord,
- 13:38and then he brought me other ministries
- 13:40to listen to that I'd never experienced.
- 13:43And so, when I learned that though, it was,
- 13:46like, I felt like when I would share it,
- 13:51people would say, "Wait," and they would,
- 13:53"Aren't you word of faith?
- 13:55What happened to you?
- 13:56You're not-- why are you talking
- 13:57about your emotions?"
- 13:59Like, I'm causing a panic to people
- 14:00because all of a sudden I'm talking emotions
- 14:01and we don't do emotions, you know?
- 14:04Or you just feel like to walk into your own
- 14:07place where God's calling you, I didn't-- I couldn't
- 14:11let go of who-- I'm-- I wanted to go,
- 14:13"I am always a word of faith girl.
- 14:16I'm always gonna be a faith girl,
- 14:18but God showed me some things that were in my way.
- 14:22And that doesn't make anything untrue.
- 14:24It just adds."
- 14:25So, what I had to realize then,
- 14:27my parents were pioneers, but I didn't look at myself
- 14:31as a pioneer.
- 14:32I look at myself as coming up under their ministry
- 14:35and speaking what they spoke and needing
- 14:38to fit into the mold.
- 14:39Nobody told me that, my dad would
- 14:41have said, "What are you talking about?
- 14:43Don't fit into my mold."
- 14:44He'd be like, "Go do your thing."
- 14:48And I always wanted him to go send me out, and he didn't.
- 14:51But if I ever said, "I feel like I'm called
- 14:53to do this, I'm gonna start a show,
- 14:55I'm starting a show."
- 14:56And he'd be so supportive.
- 14:58He wasn't trying to tell me what my calling was.
- 15:01And I love that about him and mom.
- 15:03But that place of realizing I can become,
- 15:08I can be in legacy and an inheritance
- 15:13to my parents, to the Lord,
- 15:15and I can also be a pioneer.
- 15:17Because God's always calling us.
- 15:20I don't think he ever calls anyone
- 15:23to be a copy of the person before them.
- 15:26Cindy: And it looks different in each one of us.
- 15:28Kelly: There's something you're gonna have
- 15:29to take.
- 15:30Or they might as well just listen to Kenneth
- 15:32and Gloria Copeland and not listen to me.
- 15:34Because, you know, you don't-- you can
- 15:35find them everywhere.
- 15:36So, there's something that has to come out of you,
- 15:39all of us, that is unique to how God called us.
- 15:43Rachel: Yeah, and I think it's
- 15:44so important, like, just knowing your identity
- 15:46and having a firm identity in who you are in the Lord
- 15:50and knowing that you might not be like what was
- 15:54in the past.
- 15:55You're gonna be something new, and the message doesn't change.
- 15:57We talked about that, but maybe the method will.
- 15:59And it's like we can build on the great foundation,
- 16:02but like you said, we can still pioneer new things.
- 16:05We can learn new things.
- 16:06We can grow, and Courtney, I know that's
- 16:08so much of your heart.
- 16:09This girl's like a little wrecking ball.
- 16:11She goes and she's like, "We're making
- 16:13everything new, we're just revolutionizing everything."
- 16:18How do you feel like you're passing the baton
- 16:20to the next generation?
- 16:21Courtney: Well, it's interesting because, you know,
- 16:23I'm coming back to KCM as a 33-year-old,
- 16:26and there's employees that have worked
- 16:28there longer than I've been alive.
- 16:29You know, there's employees that have worked there 38,
- 16:3140 years.
- 16:33And there's been-- it's not been easy
- 16:36to see change for a lot of people.
- 16:37It's my grandfather's excited.
- 16:39He said, "If I don't change, I'm just gonna become a ditch
- 16:42in someone's way to the Word."
- 16:44And it's like, if he can be--
- 16:46if he can feel that way, then we need to be open-minded.
- 16:49And so, the analogy I keep using is like,
- 16:51when you walk into the department store
- 16:53and you see Estée Lauder and its pretty light blue,
- 16:56you know, decor across the aisle
- 16:58from Mac Cosmetics with its black, you know,
- 17:00strobe lights and music, but you look
- 17:03at the bottom of the bottle, they're both owned by L'Oreal.
- 17:06And it's like they're this-- they're made
- 17:07in the same factory, using the same key ingredients.
- 17:11And that's what I'm trying to do at the ministry,
- 17:13is take my grandparents' teaching, not water it down,
- 17:17not make it any less true, not make it easy to digest
- 17:20so we don't hurt people's feelings,
- 17:21but we're taking it and we're changing the method
- 17:23in which we put it out.
- 17:25And we're not alienating the people and the message
- 17:28and the way that it's been going out.
- 17:30We're doing both at the same time.
- 17:32And so, I don't believe that legacy or a new,
- 17:36you know, generation of people
- 17:38looks like-- last time I was
- 17:40at the studio eight years ago, the studio
- 17:41did not look like this, you know?
- 17:43But it's like, we have to never change the message,
- 17:46but we do have to change the method sometimes.
- 17:48So, my grandfather is so open to that.
- 17:50He's so excited about, like, when you walk
- 17:53into the production this year at Southwest,
- 17:54like, we have more LED screens and lights
- 17:57and anything that we've ever had before, but he is excited
- 18:01about it.
- 18:02And it takes both sides from-- you know,
- 18:04I'm 33, it takes me honoring above
- 18:07and me honoring below in age,
- 18:09but it takes my grandfather being willing
- 18:11to change, and he is.
- 18:13Rachel: I really believe that if we're gonna
- 18:14have another great move of God, we have
- 18:17to reach people where they're at.
- 18:19We might have to change how we do things a little bit and so.
- 18:20Kelly: We will. Rachel: And we will.
- 18:22Kelly: We do have to change.
- 18:23We should all just normalize that
- 18:25and just say that's it's-- we're also
- 18:27in the time of change where everything is changing.
- 18:31He's changed when our trajectory has changed
- 18:35towards where the whole Bible is written about.
- 18:39And that would require change, to have a changed church,
- 18:42without spot or wrinkle, transformed.
- 18:44That's all words of change.
- 18:46So, I mean, we just need to say it.
- 18:48Rachel: That's so hard for me though.
- 18:49Can I be real?
- 18:51Oh, my goodness, I hate change--
- 18:52Kelly: Be real.
- 18:53Rachel: It is so hard.
- 18:55That's something I'm still working on with the Lord.
- 18:56Courtney: It's really important though
- 18:57that in people's desire to change--
- 18:59because in living in Los Angeles
- 19:01and I was trying to find a church,
- 19:02and I finally found one, and I love my church,
- 19:05I love my pastor.
- 19:06But I watched people come and go from the church.
- 19:09And I noticed my observation was that if truth
- 19:13isn't fully being spoken from the platform,
- 19:15it doesn't matter how cool the room is,
- 19:18how good your coffee is, how cool your merch is,
- 19:21it doesn't matter if the fruit of your life
- 19:24isn't changing because the truth
- 19:25isn't available to set people free.
- 19:28It doesn't matter what you're cosmetically changing.
- 19:30So, that's something that's really important
- 19:32and one of my values in coming back
- 19:33to the ministry, is the truth of my grandparents'
- 19:37message will never go away.
- 19:39Because the truth sets people free.
- 19:40And so, that's really important
- 19:42in these times of change.
- 19:43Rachel: Yeah, and the reality is it's
- 19:45like we don't need to water anything down,
- 19:47you know?
- 19:48It's like, there's this whole
- 19:50discussion of, like, we gotta love everybody.
- 19:51But it's like, are you actually
- 19:53truly loving someone if you're not sharing with them,
- 19:57like, how the thing that they're doing
- 19:59is actually the thing that's keeping them in bondage.
- 20:01Courtney: I sit under a pastor
- 20:03that is just cutthroat and I'm just like,
- 20:04how does he get away with some of this stuff?
- 20:06But it's because people keep coming back
- 20:08because the fruit of their life is changing.
- 20:10So, it's like, if you-- and I'm not saying
- 20:12everyone needs to be cutthroat, there's a body,
- 20:14and there's arms, and legs, and different pastors
- 20:15for different reasons.
- 20:17But in my experience, in coming from L.A.
- 20:20where people are so scared to say anything,
- 20:22to hurt anyone's feelings, and coming back
- 20:25and seeing the fruit of people's
- 20:26lives change so much, that should be the goal.
- 20:29Cindy: He also doesn't care what people think about it.
- 20:32Kelly: And I-- when we get to caring
- 20:34about what we-- people think about us
- 20:37or we're changing what we're presenting
- 20:39so people will look at us differently,
- 20:42that's a sure sign that we're off.
- 20:44It doesn't take long to get back on track
- 20:47with the Lord.
- 20:48It's just, you know, turn back to him.
- 20:50Rachel: Well, talk a little bit about that,
- 20:52because there's so many people I feel like
- 20:53that feel disqualified because they've
- 20:56made a mistake or they've gone
- 20:57through something hard.
- 20:59And they feel like that is maybe
- 21:01preventing them from receiving
- 21:03the inheritance that the Lord has for them.
- 21:05But that's not true, is it?
- 21:07Kelly: It's not true.
- 21:08It's in fact-- but, I mean, let's just, again,
- 21:12I like to normalize things.
- 21:13Satan's always trying to disqualify all of us
- 21:16and talk us into that for whatever reason
- 21:18or another.
- 21:19He's been trying to disqualify this ministry,
- 21:21our ministry, you know, trying to talk people
- 21:24into canceling us, canceling you.
- 21:26He's tried to talk us into canceling
- 21:28each other, hasn't he?
- 21:29People say, "Oh, you shouldn't have
- 21:31Kenneth Copeland on there.
- 21:32Oh, you shouldn't be on Daystar."
- 21:34That thought occurred to me a while ago.
- 21:36I didn't know if I'd have a chance to share it,
- 21:38but I heard the Lord say, "If you'll just
- 21:40keep talking about me, then people will change,
- 21:46and they'll grow."
- 21:47It's not our job to care what they think
- 21:50about you, or think about me, or think about Kenneth
- 21:53and Gloria, your parents, or even where we miss it,
- 21:56even where we've made mistakes, because I don't
- 21:58think any of us can say we haven't,
- 22:00and we absolutely will.
- 22:02Rachel: Because no one's perfect, only Jesus is perfect.
- 22:04And I think that's so good because it's--
- 22:06to me it's like that analogy.
- 22:07It's like crows will peck on the back of eagles' necks,
- 22:10and there's really nothing that they can do.
- 22:12So, all that they can do is fly higher.
- 22:14And they actually have-- they have a larger
- 22:17lung capacity.
- 22:18And so, the eagles literally just,
- 22:19like, fly higher until they get so high
- 22:22that the crow runs out of oxygen
- 22:24and literally falls off their back.
- 22:26And to me, in this season the Lord
- 22:27has said to me, he's like, "You have to fly higher.
- 22:29You just have to stay focused on what I've called you
- 22:32to do, where I'm wanting to bring Daystar,
- 22:34the people's lives that I'm trying to impact
- 22:36and people's lives that I'm trying to change."
- 22:39And it's like, we can't get stuck down here.
- 22:43Kelly: I do love that it's an opportunity
- 22:45for us to-- I've had a lot of
- 22:48life-changing moments that I had to go to the Lord.
- 22:51There was no one else to help me, you know,
- 22:55in the middle of divorce.
- 22:57And then the last time it was very refining.
- 23:02But the last time, the last divorce,
- 23:04and I said before, like, it's not only
- 23:07was my last one, I will never have another one.
- 23:10I'm declaring it, I won't.
- 23:11It's not ever gonna happen.
- 23:13And I'm not married, so I have a lot of power
- 23:16to hold that promise true with the Lord.
- 23:17But-- or the death of my grandson.
- 23:22Any of the-- those things were
- 23:24very hurtful and very ref-- but yet because I was
- 23:29in the mode of turning to the Lord as my shepherd--
- 23:34in fact, I had gone so deep with him
- 23:37on that divorce that when my grandson died
- 23:40when he was two, he drowned.
- 23:43And he--or three, he was almost three.
- 23:46When he drowned, that was just, I mean,
- 23:50we all were walking very tightly with the Lord.
- 23:53It wasn't like we had to try to find a place
- 23:55to come back.
- 23:56It just was so tight with him, like,
- 23:58he ushered us through the entire thing.
- 24:01But it was still very refining to me.
- 24:04And to know I don't ever wanna go
- 24:07through something like that to need to be refined.
- 24:10Not that God did it, and I'm-- if you're in something,
- 24:13let him, get with him, he will heal you,
- 24:15he will refine you.
- 24:16You'll come out with a power you didn't have.
- 24:19But you could also be refined in trouble at work,
- 24:23or in a fight with your children,
- 24:25or your brother, or your dad, or you can be refined
- 24:29in a moment because Jesus says,
- 24:31"Hey, look how you talk to that person.
- 24:34Let me take you deeper into why you got mad at that,"
- 24:37or whatever.
- 24:38He can refine us in any moment
- 24:40if we present ourselves for that walk.
- 24:43So, if we're in ministry, I think he's refining us
- 24:47in the midst of all these things.
- 24:48He can refine me because some other ministry
- 24:51is going through something.
- 24:52And I can go, "Lord, talk to me about that."
- 24:55Not about them, about me.
- 24:58And if we are willing to walk through refinement
- 25:01with him, we'll get it in a lot easier ways
- 25:04than the trouble that we could be facing
- 25:07that people are being-- exposure's here.
- 25:12Like, you can do that with the Lord
- 25:13or you can be exposed by somebody on YouTube.
- 25:16Really, that does not end your ministry,
- 25:19it does not end your life.
- 25:20There's nothing here that can end that.
- 25:23There's no disqualification that could come.
- 25:26If you have to be-- if God restores you
- 25:28and you fell in ministry and he restores you,
- 25:32ministry may not look like it used to.
- 25:34Ministry is what you do that God tells you to do.
- 25:37The saints are supposed to be doing
- 25:39the bulk of the ministry right now.
- 25:42And we've been so selfish as pastors
- 25:44and preachers and teachers to hold
- 25:46that as we're the ones that do the ministry.
- 25:48But I just wanna encourage everybody, like,
- 25:51fly with Jesus.
- 25:52Go do what he said to do today.
- 25:54Rachel: Yeah, that's so good.
- 25:55And I love-- one of the things I love
- 25:56about you, you've always been so transparent
- 25:58and vulnerable and not hiding
- 26:00any of the struggles that you walked through.
- 26:02And I think that's so good because when people
- 26:03authentically share their story,
- 26:06other people find freedom.
- 26:09But you have gone through divorce,
- 26:10and for a lot of people in the church,
- 26:13that's like wearing the like letter, you know,
- 26:16the scarlet A or whatever on your shoulder,
- 26:19the scarlet D, however they say it,
- 26:22I don't know what the--
- 26:23Kelly: Not the A.
- 26:24Rachel: Not the A. Let me say that again.
- 26:26Kelly: But that is the case for some people,
- 26:27but it's not any different.
- 26:28Rachel: Let me say it again, okay.
- 26:30So, especially for you being in ministry,
- 26:32going through divorce, that's something
- 26:33that often has, you know, could carry a lot of shame.
- 26:36How did you go through that and how was
- 26:39that, especially being like on a platform
- 26:41with everybody's opinions and walking through
- 26:44so much grief and heartache yourself?
- 26:46Kelly: Well, I-- with my-- I was married
- 26:50for almost 20 years.
- 26:52And I never thought we would ever get a divorce.
- 26:55And when that happened, it was heartbreaking,
- 26:58but yet I found it not difficult to forgive
- 27:03and I found it not difficult to move on.
- 27:05Now, I know that was the grace of God.
- 27:07I forgave, I felt-- now I wish I had
- 27:11a refined way back then, you know, because it
- 27:13might have saved some trouble.
- 27:14But I could genuinely say the Lord told me one time
- 27:18to call and apologize.
- 27:20And I said, "Lord, for what?"
- 27:24Because I felt so wounded.
- 27:26And I said I-- what-- I was so hurt.
- 27:30And he said-- I said it was so much worse,
- 27:33and he wanted me to apologize for something
- 27:34that I felt was minor.
- 27:36And he said, "But that's if you have a scale."
- 27:41He said, "Can I not take that plate
- 27:44off of your side of the scale and put it
- 27:45in front of you and say I need you to deal
- 27:47with this?"
- 27:48And that day I said, "Yes, you can, every day,
- 27:52all day."
- 27:54And it really-- I didn't realize it then,
- 27:55but that was an invitation to him to really
- 27:57refine my heart.
- 27:59And I cannot find any regret for what I've been through
- 28:03because of my walk with him.
- 28:06That he took care of things that were ancient in my life.
- 28:08Like, from when I was little, he would take me back there
- 28:11and help me get rid of it.
- 28:12And that's where the freedom has come in my life.
- 28:15So, walking with him is how I handle it.
- 28:19Nobody else can say if I'm qualified to minister.
- 28:22If I'm doing what the Lord says,
- 28:24and it really only matters what he thinks,
- 28:26if there's one person in the audience,
- 28:28if I'm helping one person, two people, three people,
- 28:30ten people be free, I don't really care about that.
- 28:34I told him, I said, "I don't care
- 28:35if my ministry is in the back office
- 28:38or on a television set or--" when I got free of that,
- 28:42because that's a real temptation.
- 28:43The microphone has-- is a loud voice
- 28:46until you just command it away from you
- 28:48and the Lord delivers you from it,
- 28:49I think, if you grow up in these things
- 28:52and you feel like the microphone
- 28:53makes you somebody.
- 28:55Now that's a lie.
- 28:56And finding out the truth of that is
- 28:58the most freeing thing.
- 28:59So, I can really found a way in him to let him build me,
- 29:04move me, set me up in a ministry that looks
- 29:08like he wants it to do-- look like.
- 29:10Cindy: And you're more effective
- 29:12by what you've been through as well because you
- 29:14have understanding and empathy for people
- 29:17who have been through divorce
- 29:18or the death of a grandson.
- 29:20I mean, that has to be so difficult,
- 29:23but you can see that, I'm sure,
- 29:25and then sense that in someone else.
- 29:27Kelly: Well, I won a battle. Cindy: Sure.
- 29:29Kelly: And when you win, you can share
- 29:31if you're willing to just not be the story
- 29:34about you, but the story is about Jesus.
- 29:37If the story is always about Jesus,
- 29:38then who can say a word against that?
- 29:44Rachel: What would you say to someone right
- 29:45now that's watching, maybe they're going
- 29:48through a hard time and they don't know the Lord
- 29:50as their Savior, and maybe they wanna
- 29:52invite him into their lives, what would you say?
- 29:56Kelly: I would tell you this is an invitation
- 29:58to you if you've known the Lord even,
- 30:00or you don't know the Lord, or you-- we all wanna--
- 30:02need to know him deeper, so let's all just ask him,
- 30:06Lord Jesus, come into my heart, my mind,
- 30:11my will, my emotions, my body, recreate
- 30:15my spirit, come inside my spirit and live in me.
- 30:20Take my life, do what you wanna do
- 30:23with it today.
- 30:24I give it to you in Jesus's name.
- 30:26And receive what he did for you.
- 30:29Receive life with him.
- 30:32It doesn't have to be a complicated prayer.
- 30:33My mother genuinely only prayed, "Take my life
- 30:37and do something with it."
- 30:39So, it's not a religious thing.
- 30:41So, just ask him today, say, "Lord, take my life,
- 30:46all of me."
- 30:47I didn't give him my mind, will, and emotions
- 30:49till later in my life.
- 30:50I didn't know how to do that, but all I had to do
- 30:52to start that was start a conversation
- 30:54with him and say, "Lord, what about this?
- 30:57Why did I get angry?
- 30:58Why did I blow up at so and so?
- 31:01What is wrong with my marriage?
- 31:03What is wrong with me?"
- 31:04That's a great place to start,
- 31:05and he will answer you, and it'll be a--probably
- 31:08a years-long journey, and I'm still walking.
- 31:12Rachel: We all are still walking that out,
- 31:13but it's the greatest prayer that you could ever pray.
- 31:15And Courtney, it really is that simple.
- 31:18How has praying that prayer changed your life?
- 31:20Courtney: When I heard my aunt Kelly
- 31:23tell me what she had been through on the other side
- 31:25of her testimony for the first time,
- 31:26she said, "I found myself on the floor
- 31:28and I realized Jesus is not unfamiliar
- 31:31with the floor."
- 31:33And the prayer that I wanna encourage you
- 31:36to pray, like she said in my grandmother's
- 31:38prayer, "God, take my life, do something with it.
- 31:43I receive you today as my Lord and Savior."
- 31:46And then make a decision to walk that life out.
- 31:50Listen to him in the moments.
- 31:51My grandfather has been talking about, you know,
- 31:54if you don't know how to hear from God,
- 31:56start with the little things, "Lord, what shirt
- 31:58should I wear today?
- 32:00What socks should I wear?"
- 32:01And he says, you know, you hold them up to your--
- 32:03just hold and you just listen.
- 32:04He's so cute when he gives his example.
- 32:06But he'll just hold his socks up to his chest
- 32:08and he'll say, "Which pair do you want me
- 32:11to wear today?"
- 32:12Because if you can learn to trust God
- 32:13as your Savior, which feels really big,
- 32:16but if you can learn to trust them with
- 32:17the little things, you can grow into
- 32:19the bigger things when you have a crisis
- 32:21or you need God as your source,
- 32:23you can remember that, "You've taken my life,
- 32:25you're doing something with it," and it starts
- 32:27by just obeying the next step.
- 32:30Cindy: And, you know, I heard that word
- 32:31from Sheila Walsh, who told her testimony.
- 32:35And I just bawled all the way through it.
- 32:38You can go find that and listen to it.
- 32:40It-- she met the Lord on the floor
- 32:42in an insane asylum after sitting
- 32:44on an interview couch that morning.
- 32:47So, we can fall far, but we can't fall away
- 32:50from Jesus.
- 32:51He's, like, he's there. But I learned that.
- 32:54So, I just wanted to encourage people,
- 32:55listen to the teachers, listen to the preachers,
- 32:58listen to the testimonies, then you're exposed
- 33:00to what God can do in your life.
- 33:02Listening to people preach the Word,
- 33:04asking him to send you people to listen to that you need
- 33:06to hear.
- 33:08He can anoint YouTube to bring you the right people.
- 33:11I know that by experience.
- 33:12You just ask, we just have to ask.
- 33:14Rachel: It's really just that simple.
- 33:15The Lord is drawing you today, and I hope
- 33:18that you've been so encouraged.
- 33:19And it's really about a personal
- 33:21relationship with him.
- 33:22It's not about a religion.
- 33:23It's not about a set of rules.
- 33:25It's really just simply, like Courtney said,
- 33:27learning to know Jesus as your Father.
- 33:29And as we close, I just want you to remember
- 33:31that a lasting legacy, it begins with
- 33:33that personal relationship with Jesus.
- 33:34And no matter where you've been
- 33:37or what mistakes you've made,
- 33:38they don't disqualify you from the calling God
- 33:41has placed on your life.
- 33:42It's by his grace that as you trust him,
- 33:45he'll be faithful to use your story
