- 0:01Speaker 1: Gospel reflection for the fourth day of November in the
- 0:04Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And today is the memorial of St. Charles Borromeo Bishop.
- 0:12Speaker 2: The first reading, I believe, or second reading? I cannot remember.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But the reading we're going to focus on today is
- 0:18Speaker 1: Philippians 2, 12 through 18.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Wherefore, my dearly.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my
- 0:25Speaker 1: presence only, but much more now in my absence, with
- 0:28Speaker 1: fear and trembling, work out your salvation. For it is
- 0:32Speaker 1: God who worketh in you both to will and to
- 0:35Speaker 1: accomplish according to his good will. And do ye all
- 0:39Speaker 1: things without murmuring and hesitations that you may be blameless
- 0:43Speaker 1: and sincere children of God, without reproof in the midst
- 0:46Speaker 1: of a crooked and perverse generation among whom you shine
- 0:49Speaker 1: as lights in the world, holding forth the word of
- 0:53Speaker 1: life to my glory in the day of Christ. Because
- 0:57Speaker 1: I have not run in vain nor labored in vain, yea,
- 1:00Speaker 1: if I be made a victim of Upon the sacrifice
- 1:03Speaker 1: and service of your faith, I rejoice and congratulate.
- 1:06Speaker 2: With you all. And for the selfsame thing, do you.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Also rejoice and congratulate with me. And the Dewey Reams notes,
- 1:13Speaker 1: with fear. This is against the false faith and presumptuousness,
- 1:18Speaker 1: or the presumptuous security, I should say, of modern sectaries, modern, well,
- 1:23Speaker 1: Protestants is what he's saying. Protestants, of course. Ah. believe
- 1:29Speaker 1: in once saved, always saved, which is heretical, and we'll
- 1:31Speaker 1: get into that in just a second. So for the
- 1:33Speaker 1: life of me, I cannot see how Protestant doctrine can
- 1:37Speaker 1: square with today's message from St. Paul. We discussed many
- 1:41Speaker 1: times the heresy of once saved, always saved, and by
- 1:44Speaker 1: faith alone of Protestantism. But here again, we have the
- 1:48Speaker 1: plain statement that salvation must be worked out in fear
- 1:51Speaker 1: and trembling. No Christian salvation is guaranteed simply by a
- 1:55Speaker 1: profession of faith.
- 1:56Speaker 2: We must work We must persevere. We must suffer and sacrifice.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I believe it was the blessed soon-to-be Saint Fulton Sheen
- 2:05Speaker 1: who said that the greatest lie of the devil has
- 2:08Speaker 1: been to convince people that he does not exist. But
- 2:11Speaker 1: I'll go a step further. His greatest and most effective
- 2:15Speaker 1: and damaging lie has been to convince people who profess
- 2:19Speaker 1: a belief in Christ that their salvation is guaranteed, that
- 2:24Speaker 1: sin cannot cross them heaven, that faith is all that's necessary,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and that anything goes. Jesus and his holy apostles said
- 2:31Speaker 1: we must obey the church he established, accept her doctrine,
- 2:34Speaker 1: receive the sacraments, avoid sin, and do works of charity
- 2:37Speaker 1: and love.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Protestantism says none of that is necessary. And that is
- 2:42Speaker 2: the work of Satan, not of God. Again today, we're reminded.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That all Christians are told to be of one faith,
- 2:50Speaker 1: one doctrine, one body, allowing no disagreement or factions. In
- 2:55Speaker 1: the infancy of the Protestant apostasy, St. Francis de Salle wrote,
- 3:00Speaker 1: His deceased highness of most happy memory, Emmanuel of Savoy,
- 3:04Speaker 1: related to the learned Anthony Possavan that at the colloquy
- 3:08Speaker 1: of Carmas, when the Protestants were asked for their profession
- 3:12Speaker 1: of faith, they all, one after the other, departed from
- 3:15Speaker 1: the assembly as being unable to agree together. That great prince,
- 3:20Speaker 1: most worthy of trust, relates this as having been present there.
- 3:24Speaker 1: All this division has its foundation in the contempt which
- 3:27Speaker 1: you have for a visible head of the church. Because
- 3:30Speaker 1: not being bound has to the interpretation of God's word
- 3:33Speaker 1: by any superior authority, each one takes a side which
- 3:37Speaker 1: seems good to him. This is what the wise man
- 3:39Speaker 1: says that among the proud there are always contentions, which
- 3:43Speaker 1: is a true mark of heresy. Those who are divided
- 3:46Speaker 1: into several parties cannot be called by the name of
- 3:49Speaker 1: church because as St. Chrysostom says, the name of Christ
- 3:52Speaker 1: is the name of agreement and concord. But as for us,
- 3:56Speaker 1: we all have the same candidates to the scriptures. one
- 3:59Speaker 1: same head, one like rule for interpreting them. You have
- 4:02Speaker 1: a diversity of canon, and in the understanding you have
- 4:06Speaker 1: as many heads and rules as you are persons. We
- 4:09Speaker 1: all sound the trumpet of one single Gideon and have
- 4:12Speaker 1: all one, the same spirit of faith in the Lord
- 4:15Speaker 1: and in his vicar, the sword of decisions of God
- 4:18Speaker 1: and the church according to the words of the apostles.
- 4:21Speaker 1: It has seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us.
- 4:24Speaker 1: This unity of language, us, is a true.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Sign that we are the army of the Lord.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And you can but be acknowledged as Madianites, M-A-D-I-A-N-I-T-S, whose
- 4:38Speaker 1: opinions are only cries and shouts. Each in your own fashion,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you slash at one another, cutting one another's throats and
- 4:46Speaker 1: cutting your own throat by your dissensions. As God said
- 4:49Speaker 1: by Isaiah, the Egyptians shall fight against the Egyptians, and
- 4:52Speaker 1: the spirit of Egypt shall be broken.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And St.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Augustine says that as Donatus had tried to divide the church,
- 4:58Speaker 1: so he himself was by a daily separation of his
- 5:01Speaker 1: party divided within himself. This mark of unity alone ought
- 5:06Speaker 1: to make you quit your pretended church. For he who
- 5:09Speaker 1: is not with God is against God. God is not
- 5:12Speaker 1: in your church, for he only inhabits a place of peace.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And in your church there is neither peace nor concord.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Very strong words by St. Francis de Sal, who was...
- 5:24Speaker 1: Rather soft-spoken. But, yeah, his writings against early Protestantism, you
- 5:31Speaker 1: have to remember, it was contemporary. The so-called Reformation was
- 5:35Speaker 1: happening during his life. And he was addressing the controversies
- 5:39Speaker 1: as they arose. And his work, I think it was
- 5:42Speaker 1: The Catholic Question, and then probably two others after that,
- 5:46Speaker 1: are classics to this day of apologetics.
- 5:49Speaker 2: There's one truth. Think about this now. There's one truth.
- 5:54Speaker 1: There's one Catholic Church, all Catholics hold to the same
- 5:56Speaker 1: interpretation of Scripture, the same doctrine, and are unified under
- 6:00Speaker 1: one Pope.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Or should be, at least.
- 6:02Speaker 1: There are 50,000 Protestant denominations, each of which disagrees with
- 6:07Speaker 1: the other, and all of which reject the Catholic Church.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But there's one truth.
- 6:12Speaker 1: The same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. That truth would be
- 6:16Speaker 1: the truth taught by the Apostles. That truth would be
- 6:19Speaker 1: the truth held by the early church in, say, the
- 6:22Speaker 1: first two, three hundred years of Christianity that gave us
- 6:25Speaker 1: the Bible. If not, we can't trust the Bible to
- 6:29Speaker 1: be authentic if we don't believe in the early church.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And that is unchanging to this day. You can go
- 6:35Speaker 1: back to the D.K., written about 70, 80 A.D. The doctrine,
- 6:39Speaker 1: the morals, the order of the mass, everything, identical to
- 6:44Speaker 1: how it's done in Catholic churches 2,000 years later. Among Protestants,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Baptists say that they totally reject infant baptism. I ask them,
- 6:55Speaker 1: where does the Bible say don't baptize infants? They can't
- 6:57Speaker 1: answer that, but they say they know it's not right.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I say to them, well, Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, etc., Anglicans
- 7:06Speaker 1: practice infant baptism. If your idea that every Protestant can
- 7:12Speaker 1: be led to the fullness of the truth by reading
- 7:14Speaker 1: the Bible, the Holy Spirit will enlighten their mind, How
- 7:18Speaker 1: do you know those four mainline Protestant denominations are wrong,
- 7:22Speaker 1: but your Baptist church is right?
- 7:26Speaker 2: By what authority do you decide?
- 7:28Speaker 1: Well, they have no answer to that. No answer to
- 7:30Speaker 1: that whatsoever. And that's just the beginning. That's the tip
- 7:34Speaker 1: of the iceberg. When each man claims to be able
- 7:38Speaker 1: to interpret the Bible on his own, each man becomes
- 7:40Speaker 1: his own pope.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And as St.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Francis de South said, there will be as many churches
- 7:45Speaker 1: as there are men with differing opinions. And that's exactly
- 7:50Speaker 1: what's happened in the nearly 500 years, yeah, 500 years
- 7:54Speaker 1: or so since St. Francis wrote those words.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Y'all have a great day, and I will talk to
- 7:59Speaker 2: you next time.
