- 1:21Speaker 1: Our guest today, Lee Roy Butler. Let me read down
- 1:24Speaker 1: his resume right now. He was the second round pick
- 1:27Speaker 1: like myself. I will get to know what number he
- 1:29Speaker 1: was exactly when it was in the nineteen ninety draft
- 1:32Speaker 1: out of Florida State. He played his entire twelve year
- 1:35Speaker 1: career with the Green Bay Pactors. Green team, just say
- 1:38Speaker 1: green team.
- 1:39Speaker 2: That's exactly why I'm doing the introduction today, all right.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And then he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall
- 1:45Speaker 1: of Fame in twenty twenty two.
- 1:47Speaker 2: He's wearing his gear today.
- 1:49Speaker 1: He's also in the Packers Hall of Fame and the
- 1:52Speaker 1: Ring of Excellence.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I didn't know it was a difference.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And he now is a businessman with his own vodka
- 1:59Speaker 1: and a radio and TV podcast host. Our today's guest,
- 2:03Speaker 1: Lee Roy Butler, Number.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Thirty, guys, this is honor having three dvs on the.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Show, right, we all have funny We always get geekd
- 2:12Speaker 1: when we get dvs. We do always get geek because
- 2:15Speaker 1: we all speak the same language. Yes, that's so, I
- 2:19Speaker 1: guess we are one of the ones, one of the
- 2:21Speaker 1: ways we kick this thing off, is we all have
- 2:23Speaker 1: our welcome to the NFIL moment.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I know I got my bell wrong. You know, I
- 2:26Speaker 3: got the whole rookie Hazen thing, and you know Ted Wahsington,
- 2:29Speaker 3: you know that's a I'll say that for another day.
- 2:33Speaker 3: What was your welcome to the NFL moment on the
- 2:37Speaker 3: field in nineteen nineteen ninety, nineteen ninety, like football was
- 2:42Speaker 3: a little different back then.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I want I want the off the field too, Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, because I got a good field. I think
- 2:48Speaker 4: that's where I was gonna go. But on the field,
- 2:52Speaker 4: it was my rookie year. Was a three day holdout,
- 2:56Speaker 4: but it wasn't my fault. But didn't want to you know,
- 3:01Speaker 4: like I said, that was second round pick. So I
- 3:03Speaker 4: get in there late and then I come in and
- 3:06Speaker 4: you guys know, you come in the locker room and
- 3:08Speaker 4: you got grown men in there. Yeah, it's not kids,
- 3:11Speaker 4: like we're at college. So I go in there and
- 3:14Speaker 4: I and then the equipment guy says, you know, they're
- 3:17Speaker 4: already on the field. I said, so what do I do?
- 3:19Speaker 4: I just signed my contract. He said, get dressed. So
- 3:22Speaker 4: I go to my locker. I got number thirty six,
- 3:24Speaker 4: I put it on. I was I was six at
- 3:27Speaker 4: Florida State, so put it on. I go down there
- 3:30Speaker 4: and everything is fine, going through practice, and I think
- 3:34Speaker 4: we were playing a preseason game against Cleveland, but that
- 3:40Speaker 4: wasn't it. Later, Uh, somebody got hurt and I was
- 3:45Speaker 4: to back up nickelback and they say you may have
- 3:51Speaker 4: to couple Jerry Rice. I say, I ain't doing it. No,
- 3:56Speaker 4: I ain't doing it. Montana is the quarterback. And that's
- 3:59Speaker 4: when I said, God, I'm glad I got on yellow pants.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Correct now, I'm pissing my pants to go and God
- 4:07Speaker 4: is so good and God has really protected me. I
- 4:09Speaker 4: only had to cover him once and it was a
- 4:11Speaker 4: run play, and I said, man, this is the NFL,
- 4:15Speaker 4: because that's when San Francisco was rolling. Yeah, and we
- 4:20Speaker 4: weren't that good. I'll be honest at the time. But
- 4:23Speaker 4: so that's when I said, that's.
- 4:26Speaker 5: And that's nineteen ninety right, Yes, yes, it's like I
- 4:31Speaker 5: never I never thought it would be like this because
- 4:33Speaker 5: as a kid growing up in the inner city in
- 4:36Speaker 5: the projects like I was, that was my dream to
- 4:39Speaker 5: be on this field, right right, So I'm thinking you
- 4:43Speaker 5: go cover anybody, you know, got to say that all
- 4:45Speaker 5: the time.
- 4:46Speaker 4: I'm the man. I'll cover anybody, not Jared or Taylor.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I didn't want nobody, nobody.
- 4:53Speaker 1: The first game I ever started was in two thousand
- 4:57Speaker 1: and three. It was the fourth game of the season,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and and I had to cover jer Rice. Oh boy,
- 5:04Speaker 1: Tim Tim Brown.
- 5:05Speaker 2: That was my first game Raiders careers.
- 5:08Speaker 3: This is two thousand and three. You're talking about nineteen nineties.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I'm talking about two thousand and three.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I still had to cover j Rice.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Now, I thought I did something good. I had like
- 5:17Speaker 1: three p I s. Because he because he d Rice,
- 5:21Speaker 1: because he's Jerry Rice.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He got all the calls.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And I'm just when my coach was my coach came back,
- 5:27Speaker 1: was like, hey, you're doing a hell of a job, rook.
- 5:29Speaker 4: But that's j Rice.
- 5:31Speaker 2: He gonna get that call every time.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Just keep being aggressive, keeping he gonna he gonna get
- 5:36Speaker 3: that Cally.
- 5:37Speaker 2: It's amazing. I don't think you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I did not know that two Hall of Famers is
- 5:42Speaker 3: the first game I started.
- 5:43Speaker 4: It's like, welcome a great player the league. I was like,
- 5:47Speaker 4: oh my god, I gotta say something before I say
- 5:49Speaker 4: that off the field about Peanut. This is I didn't
- 5:54Speaker 4: waiting to tell you this a long time okay, because
- 5:56Speaker 4: I waited sixteen out. I know I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But if I don't say, I'm gonna forget it. I
- 6:01Speaker 4: waited sixteen years getting the Pro Football of Fame. And
- 6:04Speaker 4: I remember a guy asking me when I was a
- 6:05Speaker 4: semi finalist. I said, if I had the hands of Peanut,
- 6:09Speaker 4: I'd already been in the Hall of Fame. He said, well,
- 6:12Speaker 4: I said, cause I dropped twelve picks. Now, I ain't
- 6:15Speaker 4: talking about don't want to tip. I'm not hit in
- 6:17Speaker 4: the chest. Yeah, because I can't catch. So I said,
- 6:20Speaker 4: if I had his hands, I have more picks, maybe
- 6:23Speaker 4: I would be in a long time ago. And it
- 6:25Speaker 4: was a Chicago writer. He put it on one of
- 6:29Speaker 4: the blobs or something, and one of the guys, uh said, man,
- 6:35Speaker 4: I thought the Bears the Packers hated each other. They
- 6:38Speaker 4: don't give each other's compliments. I said, man, that's fake
- 6:41Speaker 4: wrestling stuff. You you know, you honor a guy that
- 6:47Speaker 4: could do something better than you. So I always wanted
- 6:49Speaker 4: to tell you that I appreciate that. Thank you. Off
- 6:52Speaker 4: the field, I'm gonna tell you guys, for me, this
- 6:54Speaker 4: is emotional because I didn't have a. It wasn't a
- 6:59Speaker 4: lot of money back around. But the first meeting starts
- 7:03Speaker 4: at nine o'clock. Okay, so I'm thinking I can get
- 7:08Speaker 4: in there eight fifty eight in Florida State. You can
- 7:11Speaker 4: come in there at nine fifteen, and you all America, Okay,
- 7:14Speaker 4: you're good. I came in there, like read at nine
- 7:18Speaker 4: o'clock and everybody was looking out the last one.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Oh.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Everybody looked at me. I'm late. I'm looking okay. When
- 7:27Speaker 4: I got down to my locker after the meeting, which
- 7:30Speaker 4: is about an hour, I had a fine in there
- 7:32Speaker 4: for ten thousand. Ooh. I said, this is my first fine.
- 7:37Speaker 4: So I don't know how it works. I don't. I'm
- 7:38Speaker 4: like reading it. I'm like, what was going? Oh, they
- 7:42Speaker 4: say you was late and it's one thousand dollars a minute.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I said, what why y'all didn't tell me that? He said,
- 7:50Speaker 4: you didn't read the rookie handbook. I said, no, there
- 7:52Speaker 4: isn't one. The veterans tell you. So it was like
- 7:56Speaker 4: a and I'm thinking it's just a joke, just a joke.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Hey man, they took it right right out your check.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I said, never se So nineteen ninety, how much was
- 8:04Speaker 1: it how much was a check in nineteen ninety What
- 8:06Speaker 1: would you say if you.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Can back then, we had checks. You're right, peanut. We
- 8:09Speaker 4: didn't have direct deposits, right like some of the millennials now. Now,
- 8:12Speaker 4: it was a check and they put it in your
- 8:15Speaker 4: So my my first one was two hundred and seventy thousand,
- 8:20Speaker 4: and after Fiker and the Fairs and everybody, I got
- 8:23Speaker 4: like maybe ninety eight because they they put some money
- 8:29Speaker 4: up to save for you. But I've been pour all
- 8:33Speaker 4: my life in poverty. And I told my mom, I said, Mom,
- 8:38Speaker 4: I got the first check. It's like ninety something thousand.
- 8:43Speaker 4: She said, put it away, do things. But it really
- 8:45Speaker 4: opened my eyes. Yeah. But and then somebody brought me
- 8:49Speaker 4: down because I thought it was a lot. Uh. Brian Noble,
- 8:53Speaker 4: I'm in the linebacker. He had a million dollars after taxes.
- 8:58Speaker 4: He said, don't worry about it. Real you got plenty
- 9:00Speaker 4: of time to make money. But that's when it put it.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It was. It was real deal for me. Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Now we got to talk about something current and just
- 9:09Speaker 1: get it out the way.
- 9:10Speaker 2: The people want to know.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You're a Green Bay guy. Aaron Rodgers finally being gone
- 9:15Speaker 1: and traded.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Leg for them.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I just I just just I'm just leave
- 9:21Speaker 1: it at that.
- 9:22Speaker 2: What is your opinion on it?
- 9:23Speaker 4: Well, I'm gonna keep it one hundred.
- 9:24Speaker 2: There we go.
- 9:26Speaker 4: I hope you do, because now this is gonna be
- 9:28Speaker 4: different from Uh. I played for one team my whole life,
- 9:34Speaker 4: the passion of that, so I look at different the
- 9:38Speaker 4: other guys, I really do. But with Aaron Rodgers, it
- 9:43Speaker 4: seemed like he's not happy. Yeah, because if I was
- 9:48Speaker 4: getting a three year, one hundred and fifty million dollar
- 9:51Speaker 4: game for yes, and the Packers gave him everything, and
- 9:56Speaker 4: we allow this with every quarterback, they can do whatever
- 9:59Speaker 4: they want to do, pay him the most money. Fine,
- 10:02Speaker 4: But what really it got under my skin was he
- 10:06Speaker 4: started to really pit himself against the team in which
- 10:12Speaker 4: they gave you everything, even when they got Randall Cobb
- 10:15Speaker 4: a couple of years ago. With the Cobs, love the
- 10:18Speaker 4: guys family, They did everything for you, check every box.
- 10:22Speaker 4: You still wasn't happy. And then you know, going into
- 10:26Speaker 4: the darkness, which I never even heard of it. He
- 10:28Speaker 4: can stayed in my basement of fifty thousand. You had
- 10:32Speaker 4: to go to Oregon, I mean he can stay down
- 10:34Speaker 4: there and brought it and set the phone down there
- 10:37Speaker 4: some food, but I had to get the money though, right,
- 10:41Speaker 4: But he was never happy and that really bothered me.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I'm like this fan base and Pina knows that their owners.
- 10:51Speaker 4: We don't have an owner. You have to buy a
- 10:53Speaker 4: stock certificate and you put it on your wall so
- 10:57Speaker 4: you feel like you have a say in the team.
- 10:59Speaker 4: And it just feels like when they drafted Jordan Love,
- 11:05Speaker 4: things got a little different. I think the narcissism probably
- 11:10Speaker 4: came out. They drafted Antoine Edwards from Clemson, a safety,
- 11:15Speaker 4: one of my best friends. He's supposed to replace me.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Darren Sharper. The drafted him, and I said to myself self,
- 11:24Speaker 4: I want this organization to succeed. When I'm going, I
- 11:29Speaker 4: don't care who you draft. That's my brother. It's a
- 11:33Speaker 4: competitive thing in there, especially if I was getting that
- 11:35Speaker 4: kind of money. But it just seemed like to me
- 11:38Speaker 4: that he was never happy. So I wasn't surprised that,
- 11:43Speaker 4: but I think let's go back. I think they gave
- 11:45Speaker 4: him the money though, guys to say, don't waffle like
- 11:49Speaker 4: Brett did for the next three years. Here's your money.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Just play.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you played for the same organization.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Do you ever think about anywhere else, maybe like being
- 12:02Speaker 1: tired after they draft.
- 12:03Speaker 4: That's a great question.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Do they taught draft Antoine Edwards like, man, I need
- 12:07Speaker 1: to get up out of here.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Never I had to talk with my mom. She passed
- 12:11Speaker 4: away in twenty sixteen, and I remember her saying, this
- 12:16Speaker 4: fan base, you can lose four straight. They ain't calling
- 12:20Speaker 4: for your job. You can go to the super Bowl
- 12:24Speaker 4: after thirty one years. They ain't trying to replace you.
- 12:27Speaker 4: They love you because they see it locally, because I
- 12:30Speaker 4: live in Wisconsin. You can't leave that. So I took
- 12:34Speaker 4: three pay cuts to do that because I said, this
- 12:38Speaker 4: fan base is amazing. I mean, I just they understand
- 12:42Speaker 4: that the other guy gets paid too. So if one
- 12:46Speaker 4: of you guys got to pick six against the Packers,
- 12:49Speaker 4: they're upset. And there may be some people, oh this
- 12:52Speaker 4: guy is a bum, but the majority of the people, aymen,
- 12:55Speaker 4: a guy made a great play and we understand that.
- 12:59Speaker 4: But for the most part, we're gonna win games. So
- 13:02Speaker 4: I remember the closest I got the leaving was ron
- 13:07Speaker 4: Wolf came to me. I was a transition player. Remember that.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I don't even know if they used that anymore. The average,
- 13:12Speaker 4: the top ten sound.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It was a transition tag, right, Yes, that.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Was they had the franchise. We always talk about that
- 13:19Speaker 4: Lamar had but he got congratulations to Lamar, but it
- 13:23Speaker 4: was like the top ten guys. That mean they'll match
- 13:26Speaker 4: it and if you give them a first or second
- 13:28Speaker 4: round whatever. And Ron Wolf came to me, he said,
- 13:31Speaker 4: you know what, We're gonna franchise tag you, but we're
- 13:34Speaker 4: gonna sign you to a deal, three year deal, and
- 13:38Speaker 4: do you really love it in green? I say more
- 13:40Speaker 4: than anything. We worked it out and then when it
- 13:43Speaker 4: came to me to restructure, see people get it sometimes
- 13:46Speaker 4: twisted restruction and pay because you get to look at
- 13:49Speaker 4: the language. Just gonna say a restructure. If you're a
- 13:53Speaker 4: grown man and you're your thirties, they just gonna write
- 13:56Speaker 4: your check four five million dollars. Let social media to
- 14:00Speaker 4: say you got a Bay cut.
- 14:01Speaker 2: But you got that money right right now?
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and you're not nothing to worry about.
- 14:05Speaker 4: If they release you, you can do whatever. So I
- 14:08Speaker 4: did that three times, and I just never had never
- 14:12Speaker 4: dawned on me playing in another uniform. I want to
- 14:15Speaker 4: see all my football cards one team. Sometimes it's not
- 14:19Speaker 4: your control. Yeah, they the team just release you or
- 14:22Speaker 4: trade you. But if my control like Aaron had a
- 14:27Speaker 4: chance to do that, there was nothing in me would
- 14:31Speaker 4: have said, I want to do exactly like Brett Fahre did,
- 14:35Speaker 4: waffle and go to the Jets. I just wouldn't have
- 14:38Speaker 4: done it.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I think it's rare that nowadays a player will play
- 14:43Speaker 3: for the same team. I, like yourself, wanted to remain.
- 14:47Speaker 1: In Chicago my entire career in.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Years eleven and twelve were so terrible, like it made
- 14:55Speaker 3: football not fun for those two years I was there,
- 14:58Speaker 3: and I've been talking to other player who tried to.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Get me to go elsewhere. But I was to be
- 15:04Speaker 1: honest with you and be vulnerable.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I was.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I was scared.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I was.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I was scared because I had been in Chicago for
- 15:10Speaker 1: so long.
- 15:11Speaker 4: And other players are other teams.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yeah, because because I had signed a year deal. So
- 15:15Speaker 3: Thomas Davis, the linebacker for Carolina, we would talk and
- 15:19Speaker 3: he was like, I would always save me Super Bowl.
- 15:21Speaker 3: We'd be at this Man of the Year stuff and
- 15:22Speaker 3: he's like, man going to come to Carolina, Man going
- 15:25Speaker 3: to come to Charlotte's nice.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And I was always like.
- 15:28Speaker 2: No, I'm a Chicago guy, you know. And then I
- 15:31Speaker 2: finally had to.
- 15:33Speaker 3: I had to get uncomfortable. And I preach this to
- 15:36Speaker 3: my kids all the time, get comfortable being uncomfortable. I
- 15:38Speaker 3: had to take my own advice and I was very
- 15:42Speaker 3: uncomfortable going to Carolina making that choice.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Like I was scared. And it was like, man, because
- 15:48Speaker 1: I know Chicago, they just like Green Bay. They take
- 15:52Speaker 1: care of you. It's like living on scholarship as an adult.
- 15:55Speaker 1: They love you, they love their teams.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And I didn't.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I didn't want to leave that.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I really was scared.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So now that you are in the Hall of.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Fame and you play for one of the greatest, oldest,
- 16:10Speaker 3: greatest teams in.
- 16:11Speaker 1: The NFL, how has life been in.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Wisconsin for you, even after making the making the Hall
- 16:20Speaker 3: of Fame?
- 16:22Speaker 4: Well, I say this. I think it's confusing to people
- 16:27Speaker 4: because they think when you're in the Hall of Fame,
- 16:29Speaker 4: they won't see you, Like if you're in la if
- 16:34Speaker 4: you're in New York, you know the big city. I
- 16:38Speaker 4: live in Old Creek, Wisconsin. Which is I say South
- 16:41Speaker 4: Milwaukee because you know you're google it And seriously, I
- 16:44Speaker 4: have no idea where it is. Alexa don't know where
- 16:47Speaker 4: it is. But they see me at the grocery store.
- 16:50Speaker 4: They see me taking my son to school every day
- 16:54Speaker 4: and they're like, with thof for sure you would move.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I say, I am who I am. That's why I
- 16:59Speaker 4: was in order for me to see kids because I
- 17:02Speaker 4: grew up in the inner city and Milwaukee is that
- 17:05Speaker 4: type on the North Side. When I speak to schools
- 17:08Speaker 4: about anti bullying, and I have a mental health summit
- 17:12Speaker 4: that's coming up in October, and I'm trying to develop
- 17:15Speaker 4: to where kids can get mental health on their phone,
- 17:17Speaker 4: like a FaceTime. You can talk to a therapist and
- 17:21Speaker 4: just say I have some issues. And here in Peanuts
- 17:24Speaker 4: saying on this podcast, he was scared of something probably
- 17:30Speaker 4: saved somebody's life. Because as men, you think I ain't
- 17:33Speaker 4: scared of nothing. No, it's not true. It's a lot
- 17:36Speaker 4: I'm scared of. But are you men enough to admit it?
- 17:39Speaker 4: That's their respect. That's why it gives me a huge platform.
- 17:45Speaker 4: But it also gives me a bigger platform to get
- 17:48Speaker 4: my message out because I'm working on a documentary about
- 17:51Speaker 4: my life story. Growing up in the projects, single family home,
- 17:56Speaker 4: had braces on my legs like Forrest Gump, my mom
- 18:00Speaker 4: getting a divorce from my dad, and Jacksonville, Florida, no
- 18:05Speaker 4: air conditioning, no stove, had hot plates, and to get
- 18:10Speaker 4: drafted by the packers. So when people see me, I
- 18:14Speaker 4: always try to I want to be normal, could I'll
- 18:18Speaker 4: be honest. I'm be honest because you' all my brothers.
- 18:21Speaker 4: I first made it. The guys who make it first ballot,
- 18:33Speaker 4: they're not really excited like me to wait sixteen years.
- 18:38Speaker 4: They expected it's ye just coming and they don't really
- 18:41Speaker 4: come around and some of them, some of them don't
- 18:47Speaker 4: really like to see me make it because it thinks
- 18:50Speaker 4: that waters down what they did. But when you were
- 18:55Speaker 4: a gold jacket, you're all goats. Nobody's of anybody right,
- 19:00Speaker 4: And I would wish they would say, you know what,
- 19:03Speaker 4: this is my brother, because it's only like three hundred
- 19:05Speaker 4: and seventy one guys in the Hall of Fame, super small,
- 19:07Speaker 4: and it's like you sit there letting everybody in. It's
- 19:13Speaker 4: almost like if you went to a family reunion and
- 19:18Speaker 4: everybody names on the shirt and you see a family's
- 19:21Speaker 4: name on the shirt and they didn't contribute, Like wait
- 19:26Speaker 4: a minute, the shirt's only five bucks. You didn't buy
- 19:30Speaker 4: your shirt, your names all that, and you're complaining, right,
- 19:34Speaker 4: so it just because people like Peanut. It shouldn't be
- 19:38Speaker 4: an issue whether or not he is in or not.
- 19:41Speaker 4: It shouldn't be an issue. So he's gonna feel like, man,
- 19:46Speaker 4: this is great, but they're gonna be a dB who
- 19:50Speaker 4: was in there. He said, Man, you know that's wrong.
- 19:55Speaker 4: It ain't up to you. It ain't up to you.
- 19:58Speaker 4: It's not up to you. It's up to people vote,
- 20:01Speaker 4: well do you like it or not? And I just
- 20:04Speaker 4: think that somebody like Zach Thomas, this guy was.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Huge, huge.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I loved his reaction.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I mean it was it was emotional.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It's emotional.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just like getting drafted again, Like it breaks
- 20:16Speaker 1: you down.
- 20:18Speaker 2: It breaks you down, and it's such a like I
- 20:22Speaker 2: made it to me.
- 20:23Speaker 3: It's it's the same things about getting drafted when they
- 20:26Speaker 3: call out in the forty third pick or whatever the
- 20:29Speaker 3: New Orleans stakes, Roman Harpring for that moment.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Hell, yeah, this is it.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And then you get to experience that again when you
- 20:39Speaker 1: see the big guy, you know, the Hall of Fame dude,
- 20:41Speaker 1: the big real good he come knocking on your door
- 20:45Speaker 1: and yeah, I think it's I love how they do
- 20:47Speaker 1: it now and I'm glad they don't make people wait in.
- 20:49Speaker 4: The hotel room. Well, Jim Porter is the new I'm
- 20:52Speaker 4: glad you brought that up. It's a great transition. Jim
- 20:55Speaker 4: Porter is the new president. Now he's doing it different
- 20:59Speaker 4: than mister Baker. Like Peanut said, they would put you
- 21:03Speaker 4: in a room. Now you think I have anxiety. I
- 21:05Speaker 4: get a therapy once a week for the last twenty years,
- 21:09Speaker 4: and some of its free. Though it's all good. It's
- 21:13Speaker 4: a trade, but at least I go. But you sitting
- 21:20Speaker 4: in the room and you wait for a knock or
- 21:23Speaker 4: a phone call. I had to do that twice. One
- 21:26Speaker 4: time was in Miami, sitting in the hotel with my
- 21:29Speaker 4: wife and two of my best friends. We're just waiting, anxiety.
- 21:34Speaker 4: You just you never you got a phone call, and
- 21:36Speaker 4: the phone call says you didn't make it.
- 21:39Speaker 2: So they put you in the hotel just to tell
- 21:41Speaker 2: who you didn't.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Yes, that's the excitement, I guess. I don't know.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But do y'all say the night or is it just yeah?
- 21:48Speaker 4: They yeah, they yeah, you on scholarship. They yeah, they
- 21:52Speaker 4: put you up. But it's each wherever the super Bowl
- 21:56Speaker 4: is or whatever, and you're sitting in there. So the
- 21:59Speaker 4: next year, with the pandemic. So that's worse because everybody
- 22:03Speaker 4: gets a phone call. So you know the phone calls coming.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And I remember uh in twenty one shout out to
- 22:13Speaker 4: twenty one and one of my favorite rappers. By the way,
- 22:17Speaker 4: love Twitter bringing down Twitter.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Love Twitter. What I'm trying to get free tickets. Him
- 22:25Speaker 4: and Drake come to Milwalker, my brother. We go do
- 22:28Speaker 4: our part. We do do something for me. Some think it.
- 22:34Speaker 4: The guy says, hello, mister Butler. I said, yes, sir,
- 22:38Speaker 4: he said, Unfortunately, I said, what I see you next year.
- 22:42Speaker 4: You ain't got to get me out. I'm good because
- 22:46Speaker 4: I A lot of guys may not even get this call, right.
- 22:49Speaker 4: He said, you know what, that makes me feel so
- 22:51Speaker 4: good to make these calls because I just got cussed
- 22:53Speaker 4: out by four players. And I'm a Christian man, and
- 22:58Speaker 4: I do like, do not appreciate because I didn't. I
- 23:01Speaker 4: don't have no say so over whether you get in
- 23:03Speaker 4: or not. You bother you got, I'll say, let'sten call
- 23:06Speaker 4: the next guy. So this year, Jim Porter, who I appreciate.
- 23:12Speaker 4: He was at my house for two hours before I
- 23:16Speaker 4: knew who he was. He wanted to be all of me.
- 23:19Speaker 4: They got Charles Woodson to come to my house to
- 23:22Speaker 4: knock on the door. So now they had they'll go
- 23:27Speaker 4: to the door, or they'll come to your house with
- 23:31Speaker 4: like fifty camera men and women to get your reaction,
- 23:35Speaker 4: and they'll get one of your teammates to you know,
- 23:38Speaker 4: tell you and they'll call your wife and your family.
- 23:42Speaker 4: And so every year they've been switching it up the
- 23:44Speaker 4: last two years. But that's so the way. So if
- 23:47Speaker 4: you're at your home, your anxiety is coming down, and
- 23:50Speaker 4: you said, okay, I didn't make it if I got
- 23:52Speaker 4: a phone call, but at least some home, I didn't
- 23:54Speaker 4: travel somewhere, so it was pretty cool, you know.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I mean, I I don't think I knew the whole
- 24:01Speaker 1: complete process, especially emotionally. They take you somewhere, they put
- 24:07Speaker 1: you up, so naturally you're feeling good. But now you're
- 24:11Speaker 1: behind his closed door and you don't know, and it
- 24:13Speaker 1: kind of like you're saying, they put you through this
- 24:16Speaker 1: trauma almost if man, and you're doing this for however
- 24:19Speaker 1: many years, you've already been waiting sixteen And I'd never
- 24:22Speaker 1: heard anybody say I've been waiting sixteen years.
- 24:25Speaker 2: This was amazing.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Most people don't wait for sixteen years and feel amazing
- 24:30Speaker 1: about the end result. Maybe who you share with us
- 24:34Speaker 1: is that just you as a person, or they just man,
- 24:38Speaker 1: you're just happy to be here. You understood that you
- 24:40Speaker 1: played in Green Bay and that after all this time,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I actually have the opportunity.
- 24:43Speaker 2: To do it.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Well a few things. Lee Ramo from the Green Bay Packers,
- 24:50Speaker 4: he was an immediate guy, came by my locker one day.
- 24:52Speaker 4: He say, man, you made a decade and I ain't
- 24:55Speaker 4: know what that meant. And he put his little readers down.
- 24:58Speaker 4: He looked over his glasses. You may be in a
- 25:00Speaker 4: hall of fame one day. I don't know when. So
- 25:03Speaker 4: I never thought a lot about it. And the more
- 25:06Speaker 4: and more, you know, I retired. My mom two thousand
- 25:10Speaker 4: and nine. She was like, we should prepare for your speech.
- 25:13Speaker 4: I said, speech for what She said, you may make
- 25:16Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame. You got to be prepared. I said, Mom,
- 25:18Speaker 4: that's too narcissist to to do that. She said, first
- 25:21Speaker 4: of all, I don't know what that means. The second
- 25:23Speaker 4: of all, come, my mom was a comedian. She said,
- 25:26Speaker 4: just be prepared. And then it just seemed like to
- 25:30Speaker 4: me that everything started to change when you're a finalist
- 25:36Speaker 4: because now you know it may happen, you really don't
- 25:38Speaker 4: know win. And then I was thinking, Okay, when it happens,
- 25:45Speaker 4: you know, try not to change. So I put it
- 25:47Speaker 4: like this guy, and I'll be very honest with you,
- 25:49Speaker 4: just the best way I could put it, because I
- 25:52Speaker 4: want people to feel what it means to this kind
- 25:54Speaker 4: of knocked. It's almost as if, because I told my
- 25:59Speaker 4: wife this that you're a young lady. You've been dating
- 26:03Speaker 4: this young man for fifteen years, sixteen years, and every
- 26:07Speaker 4: day you think he's going to propose to me, but
- 26:10Speaker 4: he never does. Matter of fact, you go to five
- 26:13Speaker 4: or six weddings and see your girlfriends up there getting married,
- 26:20Speaker 4: and you're sitting in the audience and it looks like
- 26:22Speaker 4: you're happening for it, but really you're saying, I hope
- 26:25Speaker 4: she tripped. I hope her hair piece fall off. I
- 26:30Speaker 4: hope something bad happened. But you said, oh, she's so beautiful.
- 26:34Speaker 4: You take people to weddings to get that. Every year
- 26:39Speaker 4: you get there and it don't happen. But the one
- 26:43Speaker 4: time you give up on him, I'm done. We got
- 26:45Speaker 4: three kids, sixteen years and I'm done. You're never gonna
- 26:49Speaker 4: ask he get all the family together and you come
- 26:52Speaker 4: through and Charles Woodson is knocking at the door. That's
- 26:58Speaker 4: what it feels like, something that you know was gonna happen.
- 27:01Speaker 4: You think it should happen. But am I entitled to it?
- 27:03Speaker 1: No?
- 27:03Speaker 4: But I've been here for so long. I've done all
- 27:06Speaker 4: these great things. I've gone to bar mitzvazz, I've gone
- 27:10Speaker 4: to like step shows, everything was it. I've been there
- 27:14Speaker 4: for him. He won't give me the ring. Then he
- 27:17Speaker 4: finally does. It's amazing. It's amazing feeling when you get
- 27:22Speaker 4: something that you personally think you deserve. But that don't mean.
- 27:27Speaker 1: That's a great I like how you I like how
- 27:29Speaker 1: you put that representation.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I do and talking about rings here peanut, don't get jealous.
- 27:33Speaker 2: You want to sit here, we go with this boat.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Could you talk and.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Share with me? Play in New Orleans.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I didn't even forget that. Yeah, back and then they're
- 27:42Speaker 2: like that.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Was I mean the super Bowl after, the party after
- 27:46Speaker 1: is probably amazing. Oh my god, So share with me,
- 27:50Speaker 1: like what it's like to bring a championship back to
- 27:53Speaker 1: the great fans in Green Bay and how special it is.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I mean, you're one of their guys. You're in the
- 27:57Speaker 2: Ring of one Hunter and all those other things.
- 27:59Speaker 4: There's nothing.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Well, he's in the Ring of Honor, but also is
- 28:02Speaker 2: it the Ring of excellence?
- 28:04Speaker 4: Semantics.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Really he's also a part of that one as well.
- 28:07Speaker 2: It says excellence though not I like this.
- 28:09Speaker 4: I like this.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Don't disrespect it.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Like this, you can't disrespect it. You're correct, both of
- 28:16Speaker 2: y'all correct.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Okay, thank you, y'all correct. So for me, it was
- 28:24Speaker 4: different because I was the only one there from nineteen
- 28:27Speaker 4: ninety when we were four and twelve, but it wasn't
- 28:29Speaker 4: my fault, though they need to get better players. The
- 28:33Speaker 4: next year were six and ten. It was terrible and great.
- 28:36Speaker 2: We're gonna use that in Chicago that one year we
- 28:38Speaker 2: were nine.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Nothing to do a great year. But it was getting
- 28:42Speaker 4: dark at four o'clock to be realistic, So.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I've been there. It gets dark at four.
- 28:47Speaker 4: God and my best friend Emms Smith Deon said they're
- 28:50Speaker 4: winning Super Bowls and I'm like, man, this single never happened.
- 28:53Speaker 4: But then we got Brett Faire, we got Reggie White,
- 28:57Speaker 4: and then I remember we beat Carolina nineteen ninety five
- 29:02Speaker 4: ninety six, and I saw a sign and they said
- 29:06Speaker 4: thirty years of misery has ended with going to the
- 29:08Speaker 4: Super Bowl. I said, what, I didn't realize that the
- 29:12Speaker 4: fan base just waited thirty years from the next Super Bowl.
- 29:17Speaker 4: So that was very impactful. We go to New Orleans
- 29:21Speaker 4: and Super Dome is huge and it's amazing, and I
- 29:24Speaker 4: saw Luther Vandrosky and he was there. I said, lu,
- 29:30Speaker 4: I'd have made it God, And then the Blues Brothers
- 29:35Speaker 4: were like the halftime entertainment. Dan aykro the Lucia and
- 29:40Speaker 4: these guys. It was a big deal. And I was like,
- 29:45Speaker 4: this is what I remember being a kid because I'm
- 29:47Speaker 4: a Cowboy fan growing up. I mean I was a
- 29:50Speaker 4: huge Cowboy fan. I used to crawl under the bed
- 29:52Speaker 4: and cry when they lost games.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Like most Cowboy fans do today.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Still yah, yeah, that's true.
- 29:58Speaker 2: They still do it today.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Tell you, when I saw rocher Stalback, I almost fainted.
- 30:02Speaker 4: I mean, so I'm saying now, I'm here as an
- 30:06Speaker 4: African American from the South, from the projects, crime and
- 30:11Speaker 4: everything to make it to where And I saw the
- 30:14Speaker 4: the Lombardi on the trophy, and I know, Lombardi is
- 30:17Speaker 4: kind of our thing. Vince Lombardi Lombardi Trophy It was
- 30:23Speaker 4: very emotional because I thought about that fan base, some
- 30:26Speaker 4: of dead and some of living for those thirty years,
- 30:29Speaker 4: thought they would never see it happen. So it was amazing.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Now we went the following year, but you can google
- 30:35Speaker 4: the results for that.
- 30:36Speaker 6: We're gonna take a short break and we'll be back
- 30:39Speaker 6: in a minute.
- 30:53Speaker 3: So you you talk about, you know, growing up in poverty,
- 30:56Speaker 3: being poor Florida, What was what was that like when
- 31:02Speaker 3: obviously you're a heavily recruited kid coming out of high school.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, and I'm pretty sure you could have
- 31:08Speaker 3: went to any college.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I'm jealous. I'm envious.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I didn't have those skills like you.
- 31:12Speaker 1: But what was it like when when coach Bolden, uh,
- 31:17Speaker 1: when he offered you that scholarship.
- 31:19Speaker 4: You're trying to make me cry, No, I do this,
- 31:21Speaker 4: my brother don't.
- 31:22Speaker 1: What was that? What was that moment like y'all told
- 31:25Speaker 1: him to ask me this, No, sir, no, sir, okay,
- 31:29Speaker 1: professional makes up all of his own questions.
- 31:33Speaker 4: H If you realized where I was from and what
- 31:39Speaker 4: I had to go through, I was a consensus all
- 31:41Speaker 4: American in high school. As you said, everybody know who
- 31:44Speaker 4: I was. But I got a letter from my teacher
- 31:46Speaker 4: and she said, you can't go to college. I said why,
- 31:50Speaker 4: She said, you didn't pass the essay T tests. I said,
- 31:52Speaker 4: what the hell is the essay T test? Well, you
- 31:55Speaker 4: got to take that to get into college. I said, well,
- 32:00Speaker 4: she said you didn't pass that either. So my life
- 32:02Speaker 4: was over because the only way I thought to get
- 32:05Speaker 4: out of the project is my mam out of poverty
- 32:07Speaker 4: is to play in the NFL. So my life was over.
- 32:09Speaker 4: But I'm gonna tell you God, it's good because my
- 32:13Speaker 4: algebra teacher, mss Gordon, got a letter handwritten from coach
- 32:20Speaker 4: Bobby Bowden Rest in peace, and he says, tell mister Buller,
- 32:23Speaker 4: I need to do a home visit. I'm coming to
- 32:26Speaker 4: see him. Now, think about this. I got letters from
- 32:29Speaker 4: every college because I was an All American. Every college
- 32:32Speaker 4: you can come to our school. But when they found
- 32:34Speaker 4: out I was a prop forty eight that I didn't
- 32:36Speaker 4: pass SAT, they all never rolle back. It was nothing.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I got no letters from Florida State, pressed on, and
- 32:45Speaker 4: then I said to myself, wait a minute, why is
- 32:49Speaker 4: he coming to see me. He had thirty kids he
- 32:52Speaker 4: was recruiting, and I bet you twenty five of them
- 32:54Speaker 4: were all Americans. He could have made a home visit
- 32:57Speaker 4: to any one of those kids, anyone of them. But
- 33:01Speaker 4: he says, I'm coming to the projects to see mister Butler.
- 33:05Speaker 4: And when he drove up and that maroon Buick, I'll
- 33:13Speaker 4: never forget it was a convoy. Can I remember telling
- 33:16Speaker 4: Brad Scott, the head recruiter, I said, man, where I live,
- 33:19Speaker 4: and you can't just be driving down in there now.
- 33:22Speaker 4: They don't think something up, you know, you can't rolling
- 33:25Speaker 4: there like u FBI. He said, don't even worry about it.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And they had police down there and everything. They drive
- 33:32Speaker 4: up to our apartment and we have a couch. It
- 33:35Speaker 4: has like a big hole in it, and my sister
- 33:37Speaker 4: got like a two by four to put under the Yeah,
- 33:41Speaker 4: just sit there, and then she was trying to pull
- 33:43Speaker 4: the plastic from the love seeking it's smaller over there,
- 33:46Speaker 4: because she said, if he comes in, you know, it's hot.
- 33:50Speaker 4: You know, we have nothing for him to drink but water,
- 33:52Speaker 4: but it got stuff on top of the water and
- 33:54Speaker 4: the one glass. Then we let my grandma drink out
- 33:57Speaker 4: of you know, it's clean. Say that for coaching, and
- 34:00Speaker 4: he walks in. He said, miss Butler, I gotta have it.
- 34:05Speaker 4: She got all emotional, and I'm thinking, waited, God, wait
- 34:08Speaker 4: a minute, why you pick me to navigate these rough waters?
- 34:20Speaker 4: To know that I must go to college. Nobody in
- 34:24Speaker 4: my family has ever been to college. Nobody. I'd be
- 34:27Speaker 4: the first. And every night I was sleeping, I wake
- 34:31Speaker 4: up in a cold sweat, not from the air conditioning,
- 34:33Speaker 4: by the way, but saying I'm not gonna make it
- 34:36Speaker 4: cause I didn't pass the test. But when he told
- 34:39Speaker 4: my mom that changed my life. It made me think
- 34:45Speaker 4: that this ain't no mistake. That I owe it to
- 34:51Speaker 4: my family, and I owe it to myself and the
- 34:55Speaker 4: people that believe in me. Not to get in no trouble,
- 34:58Speaker 4: not to go break the law, not to be out
- 35:01Speaker 4: smoking and drinking and doing no I used to get
- 35:05Speaker 4: on the trailways in the Greyhound with my student I
- 35:11Speaker 4: d with nine dollars just to go back home. And
- 35:16Speaker 4: I said, I asked him, I said, Coach Bob, why
- 35:19Speaker 4: you pick me? He said, it was something about you
- 35:22Speaker 4: that I didn't get from the other guys. You just
- 35:26Speaker 4: want a chance. I didn't even want to play. I
- 35:29Speaker 4: didn't have a position. I was a linebacker, you know,
- 35:32Speaker 4: high school, you play everything. It was just athletes. And
- 35:37Speaker 4: so my freshman year I didn't even play. And I
- 35:40Speaker 4: remember they went to play Michigan. They were going to
- 35:42Speaker 4: play Michigan, and the team's buses are leaving to go
- 35:47Speaker 4: play Michigan. That is a big game. They got one
- 35:50Speaker 4: hundred thousand people stadium. It is huge. They're going to
- 35:55Speaker 4: the airport and I'm waving to the team smiling like
- 35:59Speaker 4: good luck, guys, and the guys on the bus like,
- 36:01Speaker 4: what the hell wrong with this guy? Man, this guy,
- 36:04Speaker 4: you should be upset you're not on the bus. I
- 36:06Speaker 4: got plenty of times. You just go play. I see
- 36:10Speaker 4: y'all next year. I need to go get my books right.
- 36:13Speaker 4: I got my GP up to a three point ohero.
- 36:16Speaker 4: I focused in on what it was about. So when
- 36:21Speaker 4: you asked that question, it changed everything about me to
- 36:27Speaker 4: say that this ain't no mistake, right, and it was.
- 36:33Speaker 4: It was my sister. She's still crying because she couldn't
- 36:37Speaker 4: believe it. This coach, you don't understand. Coach Bobby Ball
- 36:41Speaker 4: was an eye country. He had his own show and
- 36:44Speaker 4: it come on right after church, because you know, downside,
- 36:47Speaker 4: we go to church two hun the day's a week Okay,
- 36:49Speaker 4: he missing church and there's a Bobby Ballen show. Now
- 36:52Speaker 4: he's in the project to see my brother, and so
- 36:57Speaker 4: it was like changing.
- 36:59Speaker 3: That's so you've had success in well, yeah, you've had
- 37:05Speaker 3: success in high school, success in college, success.
- 37:08Speaker 1: In the league, super Bowl champion.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Now you're a Hall of Famer and you're working on
- 37:14Speaker 3: this documentary just about your life and just kind of
- 37:18Speaker 3: the struggles and the success and everything that you've done
- 37:21Speaker 3: up until this point in your life. Like, what are
- 37:23Speaker 3: you hoping to get out of that?
- 37:29Speaker 4: I just want a young lady, young man somewhere to say,
- 37:34Speaker 4: you know what, it's bad for me, but it can't
- 37:39Speaker 4: get no worse than mister Bucker and he made it. Yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 4: he ain't no better than me, right it? And you
- 37:46Speaker 4: don't need money. Because we were popping my first new
- 37:49Speaker 4: shirt I ever had to I pop a tag. I
- 37:52Speaker 4: always wanted to hear that sound you pop a tag,
- 37:55Speaker 4: and it never came until I was twelve years old.
- 37:59Speaker 4: We went to the Salvation Army and they had toys
- 38:02Speaker 4: over here and they had all this stuff and I
- 38:04Speaker 4: told my mom, I don't want no toys. I want
- 38:07Speaker 4: that shirt. It was just a regular white T shirt.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Sort of like what Peanut has on. Just like I said,
- 38:13Speaker 4: I want that shirt. It wasn't even my size, but
- 38:15Speaker 4: in my head I wanted to pop that tag. And
- 38:18Speaker 4: now young lady said, you know what, go get this shirt,
- 38:22Speaker 4: Go get it, popped it, put it on and it
- 38:26Speaker 4: didn't even fit me. My sister had to like tie
- 38:28Speaker 4: it in like a nod and flip it. But to me,
- 38:30Speaker 4: I say, I want people to say, if you don't
- 38:34Speaker 4: like a restaurant, start your own. If you don't like
- 38:37Speaker 4: the way somebody's doing something, start your own business. My
- 38:42Speaker 4: grandmother gave me the best compliment. She said, you have
- 38:46Speaker 4: a unique ability because God gave everybody a talent, and
- 38:50Speaker 4: your talent is you could ignore negative stuff if it
- 38:55Speaker 4: ain't true, ignore it because once they know that it
- 38:59Speaker 4: gets her in your skin, you're gonna see it every day.
- 39:02Speaker 4: And that's what made me say, when people see me
- 39:05Speaker 4: and they see this document, I ain't never known this
- 39:08Speaker 4: guy had it this bad? Yeah, and how's he so grounded?
- 39:11Speaker 4: House He's a normal guy, And that's what it's gonna
- 39:15Speaker 4: find out. I want to be a normal person, to
- 39:17Speaker 4: be a leader, not a follower. But if you're going
- 39:20Speaker 4: to follow, you to write leaders, and to me, it's
- 39:24Speaker 4: my teachers, our grandparents. My mom is my hero, the
- 39:29Speaker 4: people I see every day. It wasn't a guy dunek
- 39:31Speaker 4: to the basketball or playing football. It was my mom
- 39:34Speaker 4: every day to get on three buses, just a carpool
- 39:39Speaker 4: to bring food home. And then when food didn't come,
- 39:43Speaker 4: you go to the food pantry and you stand in
- 39:47Speaker 4: line and kids are on the bus and cars screaming
- 39:51Speaker 4: and yelling, picking at you because I'm trying to eat.
- 39:55Speaker 4: And my mom said, why that don't bother you? I said,
- 39:57Speaker 4: could all those kids go on my autograph? Because I'm
- 40:00Speaker 4: here to survive, to make it for you, and that's
- 40:04Speaker 4: what they're gonna get out of it.
- 40:05Speaker 1: So when does this come out and how can we
- 40:08Speaker 1: possibly get it?
- 40:09Speaker 4: It's gonna be by two years because I'm blessed because
- 40:12Speaker 4: it's hard to find your teachers. I'm fifty four years old,
- 40:16Speaker 4: and I found two of my teachers. Ms. Gordon, who's
- 40:20Speaker 4: in my Hall of Fame speech, and mister Gracie, my
- 40:23Speaker 4: ninth grade basketball coach who helped me shoot free throws.
- 40:30Speaker 4: He said, they're gonna file you, so you got to
- 40:31Speaker 4: shoot free throws when everybody was gone, I say, oh,
- 40:35Speaker 4: I'm about to miss the bus. I'll take you. People
- 40:40Speaker 4: don't know coaches do this. So to find the people,
- 40:45Speaker 4: I need to really put it together. And then the
- 40:47Speaker 4: last thing, the apartments or projects where I was born
- 40:53Speaker 4: and grew up, is gone toward now, so it's too
- 40:56Speaker 4: much crime. They got rid of it. So I would
- 40:59Speaker 4: think my if I had blessing, which is God is good,
- 41:04Speaker 4: twenty twenty five, July twenty eighth, will be the premier.
- 41:10Speaker 4: That's my mom birthday July twenty eighth, because it's about her,
- 41:15Speaker 4: because she's passed on, but she's still orchestrating my life.
- 41:19Speaker 4: And it seemed like one of the best compliments I
- 41:21Speaker 4: got from the filmmaker Patrick Creating. He said, when you
- 41:24Speaker 4: meet Leroy Butler, it's like his mom standing right behind him.
- 41:28Speaker 4: They think about that. Wherever you at, your mom standing out,
- 41:33Speaker 4: you're gonna act a certain way, even if you're shooting dice.
- 41:37Speaker 4: You had to canseay you know, you're okay, Mom, I
- 41:39Speaker 4: can't do this, can't It don't matter. That was an
- 41:42Speaker 4: ultimate compliment.
- 41:43Speaker 1: You know, Larroi, it seems like when I hear you talk,
- 41:47Speaker 1: how much other people in your life have influenced you.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yes, and it just you know, because.
- 41:53Speaker 1: You maybe talk about that and how you've passed that
- 41:55Speaker 1: down to your own children, and like how you're trying
- 41:57Speaker 1: to influence them, not only them, but everybody else in
- 41:59Speaker 1: your life. Talked about teachers, you talked about parent you
- 42:02Speaker 1: talked about coaches, everybody else has really helped influence the
- 42:06Speaker 1: Roy Butler, how are you taking that and moving to
- 42:10Speaker 1: forward in your life?
- 42:11Speaker 4: That's another great question because I don't think people realize
- 42:13Speaker 4: I got my first book and you have. They had
- 42:16Speaker 4: what you call a book mobile. It's like you're going
- 42:19Speaker 4: to and buy books. I couldn't afford it, so officer
- 42:23Speaker 4: friendly that the resource office.
- 42:25Speaker 2: At the school his n officer friendly.
- 42:27Speaker 4: We used to call them brown. Yeah, it was offsprinded,
- 42:34Speaker 4: but then officer brown. So we used to call all
- 42:37Speaker 4: the resource officer officer friendly. And he said, why ain't
- 42:41Speaker 4: you getting any books? I said, I can't afford it
- 42:43Speaker 4: because I wouldn't hand me down. My brother wore this. Uh.
- 42:47Speaker 4: I used to tell them that the kids say, your
- 42:49Speaker 4: brother wore that two weeks ago. I said, you're wrong.
- 42:51Speaker 4: My brother had it on yesterday and I watched it
- 42:54Speaker 4: out of us thinking and I put it on. I'm
- 42:56Speaker 4: not in school for a fashion show. I'm in school
- 42:59Speaker 4: to learn from this artest people in the world. But
- 43:01Speaker 4: he said, come see me tomorrow. I go by there.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I didn't go on the bus. I just stood outside
- 43:09Speaker 4: and looked at you get the books. Kids have got books?
- 43:11Speaker 4: Who can afford it? I got buy his control car.
- 43:14Speaker 4: He has seven books for me. Put them in the bag.
- 43:17Speaker 4: He bought me a backpack and he gave it to me.
- 43:21Speaker 4: I said, I can't afford this. He said, I paid
- 43:24Speaker 4: for him. So my mom when she saw that, she said, you,
- 43:27Speaker 4: I know you didn't steal these books. I said, no, ma'am.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Officer Friendly gave it to me Officer Brian. So my
- 43:33Speaker 4: first book that I own that I didn't have to
- 43:36Speaker 4: check out of the library and return it was from
- 43:39Speaker 4: a police officer. And that changed my life. So I
- 43:44Speaker 4: tell my kids. I have six daughters and a son.
- 43:48Speaker 4: My son's my favorite. Don't tell my six daughters. Did
- 43:53Speaker 4: they know? Trust me? You want to be my favorite?
- 43:55Speaker 4: Work harder my kids. I teach them to be leaders
- 44:01Speaker 4: in the community, and I teach them whoever helps you
- 44:05Speaker 4: just put that message out there. And that's what I'm
- 44:09Speaker 4: a big message board for helping people. And that's what
- 44:13Speaker 4: I always try to tell my kids, my cousins, my nephews,
- 44:17Speaker 4: my nieces. You didn't do it alone. Your parents deserve this.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Your parents help you and try to get them to
- 44:25Speaker 4: be independent, but really helping people. I don't want to
- 44:28Speaker 4: be the headline. I want to be the story. Some
- 44:32Speaker 4: people see the headline, they keep read on swiping. Why
- 44:35Speaker 4: don't you go back and read, Oh, I got the
- 44:39Speaker 4: facts of what happened. You just see the headline that
- 44:42Speaker 4: just rolls people in.
- 44:44Speaker 1: So your leadership, I mean, you're you're you're real big
- 44:47Speaker 1: in leadership, and I think that's kind of trans transferred
- 44:51Speaker 1: into your business. And you previously just said, well, if
- 44:55Speaker 1: you don't like it, just make one on your own.
- 44:58Speaker 1: The fact is that that kind of how you came
- 45:01Speaker 1: up with.
- 45:01Speaker 4: Great question, man, y'all good?
- 45:03Speaker 1: Because leaf spirits, is that how you came up with that?
- 45:07Speaker 4: You're good, y'all good. I don't have an Emmy for y'all,
- 45:10Speaker 4: but I'm gonna have to write up something we'll take
- 45:13Speaker 4: at I'm telling you, that's exactly what I had in
- 45:16Speaker 4: my head when I got this phone call. Because what
- 45:19Speaker 4: I'm about to tell you, probably gonna shock you, both
- 45:22Speaker 4: you and your audience. But I get a call in
- 45:25Speaker 4: the this right in the pandemic Chad Greenway that played
- 45:31Speaker 4: for Minnesota. People say exactly, and we just got y yeah, yeah,
- 45:38Speaker 4: shout out to Van Nest. We just got him from
- 45:41Speaker 4: Iowa for the UH at the Packers. So I get
- 45:46Speaker 4: a phone call and Chad said, l Roy, what's up? Man?
- 45:49Speaker 4: I said that man was going on? He said, Man,
- 45:51Speaker 4: I got a business opportunity. I get a lot of
- 45:53Speaker 4: those phone calls, but sometimes they don't never go nowhere.
- 45:57Speaker 4: He was like, Man, we want to great dut Is
- 46:00Speaker 4: the company want to start a vodka in Wisconsin. We
- 46:04Speaker 4: want you to be a part of it. I said, well,
- 46:06Speaker 4: now know, Chad, I don't drink. He said what I said,
- 46:11Speaker 4: I don't drink. But every time I drive to the stadium,
- 46:15Speaker 4: I see thousands of people in the parking lot. I'm like,
- 46:18Speaker 4: what the hell are they doing? Won't they just go
- 46:21Speaker 4: home and just come win the games? They tailgate? So
- 46:25Speaker 4: I said, you know what, this is what I'll do
- 46:28Speaker 4: if you can let me name it and be an owner,
- 46:31Speaker 4: not an ambassador. Because shout out to fifty got a
- 46:36Speaker 4: lot of vodka. I don't drink none of it's for y'all.
- 46:39Speaker 1: I didn't even know he didn't drink, right, exactly, it's
- 46:43Speaker 1: not your portfolio.
- 46:45Speaker 4: He got a big one.
- 46:46Speaker 2: It's portfolio. He kill it right now, preach.
- 46:49Speaker 4: So I said, well, you know what, let me so
- 46:52Speaker 4: he's they made a presentation. We're in. I can call
- 46:55Speaker 4: it lap vodka, and which was amazing, and then it
- 46:59Speaker 4: was perfect too, could just rep I mean, everything was
- 47:03Speaker 4: coming on the upswing of getting in the Hall of Fame.
- 47:05Speaker 4: And then I said, and you know this, we also
- 47:10Speaker 4: know for brons and the state of not sausages, bros
- 47:15Speaker 4: cheese skirts. Yes, that's our thing. So I started my
- 47:19Speaker 4: own brock as well. And I because I'm a culinary guy, Uh,
- 47:25Speaker 4: could I do all the cooking in the house seven
- 47:27Speaker 4: days a week. I tell my wife, I'm gonna cook,
- 47:30Speaker 4: I'm gonna clean, I'm gonna play the bills, I'm gonna
- 47:31Speaker 4: do everything. You just keep them damn kids away from me. Okay,
- 47:35Speaker 4: that's your job, except for my son. It's twelve years old.
- 47:39Speaker 4: That's my dog. So the business side of that, you
- 47:44Speaker 4: have to do that because when you're sleeping, you gotta
- 47:48Speaker 4: make money. And that's what my mom told me. She said,
- 47:51Speaker 4: I don't need you don't need to be the richest
- 47:52Speaker 4: guy in the world. You just want to be enough
- 47:54Speaker 4: to where you could pay your bills and have enough
- 47:57Speaker 4: for the phone calls. I know, both of y'all get
- 48:00Speaker 4: can you cash out me two hundred? Can you zell
- 48:04Speaker 4: me zay Ooh? What the hell is that? Can you
- 48:06Speaker 4: vendoo me? These are your kids, your family members, and
- 48:08Speaker 4: they don't expect you to say no, So you gotta
- 48:11Speaker 4: have money for that. And you also have to have
- 48:13Speaker 4: money for the one thing I'll say about Andrew Brandt
- 48:16Speaker 4: from the Packers, me and him had a conversation. This
- 48:19Speaker 4: is my last big deal, I said, Andrew, I want
- 48:24Speaker 4: to be rich when I'm old, not when i'm young.
- 48:28Speaker 4: He said, huh. I said, think about it. You get
- 48:31Speaker 4: your Social Security in your sixty five or whatever, and
- 48:34Speaker 4: you can live out your great days when you're young
- 48:38Speaker 4: throwing money up, got bent Lee's and all that, and
- 48:41Speaker 4: then when you're in your fifties and sixty you broke.
- 48:44Speaker 4: I don't want that. I want to have a seven
- 48:47Speaker 4: point fifty to eight hundred credit score. I want to
- 48:50Speaker 4: have money in the bank when I start to hit
- 48:52Speaker 4: sixty years old, so that's why I do business opportunities
- 48:57Speaker 4: like that. So when I hit that ade man, we
- 49:00Speaker 4: try to get a little roy on the podcast. Man,
- 49:02Speaker 4: this man golfing and Bermuda. Ain't that a triangle? No,
- 49:05Speaker 4: he's golfing there by himself with these rich folks. He
- 49:08Speaker 4: got a yacht. No that. I mean, that's what I
- 49:11Speaker 4: want when I'm older. And I tell young men that
- 49:15Speaker 4: now you want to be rich when you hit sixty.
- 49:19Speaker 4: You can get your pension if you want to, you
- 49:21Speaker 4: can get all that, but save that money. Save it.
- 49:25Speaker 4: I mean, if you want to really floss on them,
- 49:27Speaker 4: go to Claire's and get you some fake jury. They're
- 49:29Speaker 4: not gonna know.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Do they expect?
- 49:32Speaker 4: Yeah them real Domino, they ain't. But you save your
- 49:36Speaker 4: money when you're older, not when you're younger.
- 49:40Speaker 1: All right, yea, So we're gonna we're gonna pivot. We're
- 49:42Speaker 1: gonna hit hit you with some quick hitters, real quick.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Okay.
- 49:44Speaker 2: I think I know the answer to this.
- 49:46Speaker 4: I better take a drink on them.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, okay, because you answer to this.
- 49:51Speaker 3: I think I know what it is. But what do
- 49:53Speaker 3: you think your greatest sports accomplishment.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Is Oh, my greatest sportsccomplishment.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Watch him say, like high school basketball.
- 50:03Speaker 4: I should say that throwman. Now I say that I.
- 50:06Speaker 5: Was great pe when I need dollars, I was All
- 50:10Speaker 5: Conference at basketball.
- 50:13Speaker 4: Okay, Now I'm one of the greatest shooters of all time. Me,
- 50:16Speaker 4: Regie Miller, Michael rid Steph Curry were all in the
- 50:19Speaker 4: same thing. But I put that to the side. Now,
- 50:22Speaker 4: Michael Ridd, I got Michael Red the Bucks. Yeah, it's
- 50:27Speaker 4: had to get people name they can google. But I
- 50:31Speaker 4: think the greatest accomplishment that I wake up as I'm
- 50:34Speaker 4: in all the state of Florida picked thirty three players
- 50:41Speaker 4: for one hundred years and I was on that team.
- 50:44Speaker 4: Oh wow, that blew my mind. That's big. That blew
- 50:47Speaker 4: my mind, especially the.
- 50:48Speaker 2: State of Florida.
- 50:49Speaker 1: They got some some balls.
- 50:52Speaker 4: To this day, I still don't even believe it. So
- 50:55Speaker 4: that that that's probably my biggest accomplishment. I would say,
- 51:00Speaker 4: if I could pick one play, if.
- 51:01Speaker 2: You don't mind, go Pleat the Super Bowl.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Playing the Super Bowl, I go over to the coach.
- 51:08Speaker 4: I said, hey, I ain't blitched yet and we're in
- 51:10Speaker 4: the third quarter. Was happ't it? I mean, what my
- 51:14Speaker 4: family sitting up there too. He said, what are you
- 51:15Speaker 4: talking about? I said, man. He said, okay, if they
- 51:18Speaker 4: get split backs with Dave Maggott away from Reggie, you
- 51:23Speaker 4: can go. I said, you sure, yes, but you know
- 51:26Speaker 4: you got to tell your safety, which was Eugene Robinson.
- 51:30Speaker 4: I said, Eugene, if they give me a split bag
- 51:32Speaker 4: or the back offset to my side, I'm gone. I'm
- 51:36Speaker 4: gonna translate that means I'm blitzing.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Appreciate lady us don't know that.
- 51:41Speaker 4: I'm gone, because both of y'all know. When I say
- 51:44Speaker 4: I'm gone, ain't no coming back. I don't care if
- 51:47Speaker 4: he's motion, I'm gone. And I got the formation, so
- 51:53Speaker 4: I gino. He'said, okay, Rod, he just got a little
- 51:57Speaker 4: deeper because I got covered. Swim from a cover four
- 52:00Speaker 4: til I'm gone, So weak side it's a hole there, yeah,
- 52:02Speaker 4: and shout out that Drew Blad So that's my guy.
- 52:05Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Drew, but going there and Maggot comes and
- 52:10Speaker 4: he didn't cut me. I say, it's gonna cut me.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Didn't cut me, so I went through him. I had
- 52:15Speaker 4: the leverage, and I saw Blodsoul's name, and this would
- 52:20Speaker 4: be allegedly a horse callar now, but don't go look
- 52:23Speaker 4: at it, not.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Inside the pocket.
- 52:24Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go, Thank you Roman, smart guy got
- 52:27Speaker 4: you grab him. I sacked him and I did some
- 52:32Speaker 4: weird dance. Forget about that part. When I got to
- 52:35Speaker 4: the bench, one of the interns came to me and say,
- 52:37Speaker 4: you know what, eighty million people probably saw that place,
- 52:42Speaker 4: and that's the one I wake up, and I say,
- 52:44Speaker 4: cause I got a picture of it on my wall,
- 52:47Speaker 4: and every me and my son eating breakfast, it's like
- 52:51Speaker 4: rapped behind we kind of look at it. What you
- 52:54Speaker 4: can do when you study and when you you know,
- 52:59Speaker 4: how did that that formation even run a slant? I'm
- 53:02Speaker 4: gone ready for the moment. He's to do it all
- 53:04Speaker 4: the time. And you know how you when you squat
- 53:06Speaker 4: and there it is only saftists can know that what
- 53:11Speaker 4: it was that play, that that was the preparation.
- 53:14Speaker 1: My question is your top five defensive players all time?
- 53:19Speaker 4: Top five defensive players. Yes, it's some bias now, Reggie
- 53:24Speaker 4: White love that. Reggie White to me changed the game
- 53:29Speaker 4: because I never knew they can slide the line to
- 53:33Speaker 4: a guy. I thought they just max protect, but they
- 53:36Speaker 4: would slide the line to Reggie Lawrence Taylor to me,
- 53:41Speaker 4: is a difference maker because he told you what he
- 53:44Speaker 4: was going to do and he would do it.
- 53:48Speaker 1: And do you have an example where you heard him
- 53:50Speaker 1: say something and he went out.
- 53:51Speaker 4: There and did it. Oh, whenever Lawrence Taylor. See to
- 53:56Speaker 4: Lawrence Taylor playing Dallas Philly in his division, that's when
- 54:00Speaker 4: I used to watch. I gotta see this playing Washington,
- 54:07Speaker 4: I mean, and then they used to have them micd
- 54:09Speaker 4: up back in the day. Yeah, and I forgot who
- 54:13Speaker 4: he's sacked. He said, son, this is gonna happen all day.
- 54:17Speaker 2: That was against the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 54:18Speaker 1: I remember that player on the NFL films he sacked
- 54:21Speaker 1: and was like, I looked at him.
- 54:23Speaker 4: Like, son, Yeah, I actually wanted two dollars from a
- 54:28Speaker 4: golf bet. But that's my guy. He's fine. Reggae, White
- 54:31Speaker 4: fifty six and Deon Sanders to me is he taught
- 54:40Speaker 4: me about branding long before branding was a thing. When
- 54:44Speaker 4: he was at Florida State. He has to say, I'm
- 54:47Speaker 4: the best corner, and I think I was like a
- 54:51Speaker 4: sophomore agin. If they kicked the ball to me, it's
- 54:55Speaker 4: a touchdown. I mean. So he was just transcending. I
- 54:59Speaker 4: don't think ever see another Dion Sanders Deion sand argue
- 55:03Speaker 4: that could be the best player of all time. So
- 55:07Speaker 4: those three and then this next guy. I get emotional
- 55:13Speaker 4: saying them because he can be arguably the best. Ronnie Lot,
- 55:18Speaker 4: there's not another safety to me that made a difference
- 55:22Speaker 4: to run a Lot and to boot. He's a nice guy,
- 55:27Speaker 4: but he played so mean. He used to run through people. Yes,
- 55:32Speaker 4: he never dropped the pick. I said, let me see
- 55:36Speaker 4: your fingers. He said, wow, he said let me see
- 55:37Speaker 4: because one of them I heard he cut his finger
- 55:39Speaker 4: off and I'm like, let me see, come on, and
- 55:44Speaker 4: he so he was. That guy was amazing man. Ronnie
- 55:50Speaker 4: Lot and this other guy the reason why I think
- 55:54Speaker 4: he should be. He's in my top five. I mean,
- 55:57Speaker 4: you're gonna forget a lot of people. But Darryl Green
- 56:01Speaker 4: is so fast because people his size ain't supposed to
- 56:05Speaker 4: do that.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Great point.
- 56:07Speaker 4: I tell people all the time it ain't about size
- 56:10Speaker 4: and height, weight, it's if you can play. And twenty
- 56:14Speaker 4: eight to me was amazing. So Dahn, that's my five.
- 56:19Speaker 4: I love it.
- 56:20Speaker 2: I like it too.
