- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and good morning friends and faithful listeners, and thank
- 0:02Speaker 1: you so much for starting your week out with the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Bible Explained. Today, we're going to be reading two chapters
- 0:08Speaker 1: of First Chronicles. First Chronicles twenty seven and twenty eight.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We'll be talking about the army that David has, and
- 0:14Speaker 1: then we'll also be discussing a very interesting topic, which
- 0:19Speaker 1: is did God even want the temple to be built?
- 0:23Speaker 1: We'll get into it. So something that I didn't realize
- 0:34Speaker 1: is that we're going to be done with First Chronicles
- 0:37Speaker 1: on Wednesday, and then we'll be moving into a new
- 0:40Speaker 1: season of the podcast. And yeah, I didn't even realize
- 0:43Speaker 1: that until the end of last week. Now, something a
- 0:46Speaker 1: little bit different I'm going to do with the podcast.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Not that this matters, it really doesn't, but I'm not
- 0:50Speaker 1: going to have First and Second Chronicles be one season
- 0:54Speaker 1: this time like I did with First and Second Kings. Instead,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm going to break it up into two different seasons.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But the reason being was because First and Second Kings, Man,
- 1:04Speaker 1: we were in that season for so long. It was
- 1:07Speaker 1: almost a year that we were in First and Second Kings,
- 1:10Speaker 1: So I think it would be better if we broke
- 1:12Speaker 1: the seasons up. A little bit shorter in the future,
- 1:15Speaker 1: so that is why I am going to do Second
- 1:18Speaker 1: Chronicles as a separate season. So we'll be moving into
- 1:22Speaker 1: season ten next week. I'm looking forward to it. But
- 1:25Speaker 1: today we're going to read two chapters of First Chronicles,
- 1:28Speaker 1: because again a lot of it is just names, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: names that we don't really recognize. But at this point
- 1:34Speaker 1: in time when it was written, the Israelites are coming
- 1:37Speaker 1: back into the Promised Land, and it was important for
- 1:40Speaker 1: the Israelites to know what family they came from, specifically
- 1:44Speaker 1: if they were of the tribe of Levi, right, because
- 1:46Speaker 1: there's not going to be a king in Israel any longer.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You know, the Babylonians went in and completely destroyed the
- 1:52Speaker 1: government of Israel. So now that the Israelite refugees are
- 1:56Speaker 1: coming back from Babylon eighty years after that happened, they're
- 2:00Speaker 1: not going to have the same government anymore, which means
- 2:03Speaker 1: that the Levites were the ones who were going to
- 2:06Speaker 1: build Israel back up, which is why it was so
- 2:09Speaker 1: important for the Levites to know who their families were,
- 2:12Speaker 1: what positions their families held, so that they could come
- 2:15Speaker 1: back and reassume those positions. And now First Chronicles twenty
- 2:19Speaker 1: seven talks about the rest of Israel, not the Levites anymore,
- 2:24Speaker 1: but all the other tribes that held some sort of
- 2:26Speaker 1: position in David's army. But what's really interesting about this
- 2:30Speaker 1: it didn't have nearly as much relevance as the previous
- 2:34Speaker 1: chapters that we're talking about the families of the Levites,
- 2:38Speaker 1: because obviously the governmental structure of Israel has completely changed.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You know, David's army no longer exists. So what was
- 2:46Speaker 1: the point of the author writing all of this down. Well,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'd say two reasons, for the sake of history and
- 2:53Speaker 1: also for encouragement for Israel, because you know, these people
- 2:57Speaker 1: are coming back in. Everything has changed, everything is destroyed,
- 3:01Speaker 1: nothing seems the same. You know, it's not the same
- 3:04Speaker 1: home that their families had talked about, that their parents
- 3:07Speaker 1: lived in, and so they're coming back in realizing they
- 3:11Speaker 1: have so much work to do. So I think the
- 3:14Speaker 1: author of this chapter wrote all of this down to
- 3:17Speaker 1: encourage the Israelites that their past glories might be something
- 3:21Speaker 1: that they can reachieve in the future. So we'll get
- 3:25Speaker 1: into First Chronicles twenty seven, but I'm not gonna talk
- 3:28Speaker 1: too much about this chapter, mainly because it's mostly names
- 3:31Speaker 1: of people that we don't know. And I'd also like
- 3:34Speaker 1: to delve more in depth into First Chronicles twenty eight,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but I will talk about chapter twenty seven very briefly
- 3:40Speaker 1: in some detail. So here's what it says. In verse one,
- 3:43Speaker 1: First Chronicles twenty seven. I'm reading from the web this
- 3:47Speaker 1: morning as usual. It says, now the children of Israel,
- 3:50Speaker 1: after their number, the heads of the father's households, and
- 3:52Speaker 1: the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers
- 3:55Speaker 1: who served the king in any matter. Of the divisions
- 3:57Speaker 1: which came in and went out month by month throughout
- 4:00Speaker 1: all the months of the year of every division where
- 4:02Speaker 1: twenty four thousand. So that sounds like there were twelve
- 4:06Speaker 1: divisions of the army. Each division had twenty four thousand troops.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And it says that they would serve the king in
- 4:13Speaker 1: any matter, and it says they would come in and
- 4:16Speaker 1: go out month by month throughout all the months of
- 4:18Speaker 1: the year. Of every division, we're twenty four thousand. So
- 4:22Speaker 1: the one thing I was a little bit confused about
- 4:24Speaker 1: here that I still don't have a very good answer
- 4:26Speaker 1: on was I'm not sure if the way this was organized,
- 4:30Speaker 1: if these troops had eleven months off every single year,
- 4:35Speaker 1: or if they had every other month off. If I
- 4:39Speaker 1: were to take a guess, I'd say they had every
- 4:41Speaker 1: other month off, and probably not eleven months out of
- 4:45Speaker 1: the year off. That would be my best guess. So
- 4:48Speaker 1: instead of having eleven months off every single year, it
- 4:50Speaker 1: sounds like they had six months off every single year, which, man,
- 4:54Speaker 1: that's pretty nice. Six months off every single year. Wow.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But I imagine that the work that was done when
- 5:03Speaker 1: they were on was probably very, very difficult. You know,
- 5:07Speaker 1: they were fighting men, they were warriors. They had to
- 5:11Speaker 1: help the king with anything he needed. They had to
- 5:13Speaker 1: go out to war. That would take a toll on
- 5:16Speaker 1: your physical and mental health, which is why it was
- 5:20Speaker 1: broken up in this way. So in verse two through fifteen,
- 5:24Speaker 1: it talks about the chiefs the commanders of each of
- 5:27Speaker 1: these divisions, and I won't go through all of these names,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but just to give you a taste of what this
- 5:32Speaker 1: sounds like, it says over the first division for the
- 5:35Speaker 1: first month was Josha, being the son of Zabdiel. In
- 5:39Speaker 1: his division were twenty four thousand. He was of the
- 5:41Speaker 1: children of Perez, the chief of all the captains of
- 5:44Speaker 1: the army for the first month. Over the division of
- 5:47Speaker 1: the second month was Dodai the Aho Height and his
- 5:49Speaker 1: division and Maclith the ruler, and in his division we're
- 5:53Speaker 1: twenty four thousand. The third captain of the army of
- 5:57Speaker 1: the third month was Benea, the son of Jehoida, the
- 6:00Speaker 1: chief priest. In his division were twenty four thousand. They
- 6:04Speaker 1: might actually recognize some of those names. For example, Benea,
- 6:08Speaker 1: he actually held a high position in David's army. He's
- 6:11Speaker 1: talked about several times in Second Samuel because of how
- 6:15Speaker 1: great of a warrior he was. I believe he was
- 6:17Speaker 1: the one who killed the Egyptian giant if I'm remembering correctly.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So yeah, Banea was a big part of David's army,
- 6:27Speaker 1: as well as Dodai the Ahal Height, which is a mouthful.
- 6:33Speaker 1: That guy was one of David's mighty men, and he
- 6:35Speaker 1: has talked about a handful of times as well. But
- 6:38Speaker 1: if you go through verses five through fifteen, you can
- 6:41Speaker 1: see the rest of these people who served as captains
- 6:44Speaker 1: in David's army, and a lot of these guys you
- 6:47Speaker 1: might actually recognize their names. For example, Aseel, the brother
- 6:50Speaker 1: of Joe ab and Zebediah his son after him, that
- 6:54Speaker 1: guy Asel. He was killed very early on actually in battle.
- 6:59Speaker 1: That was way back before David was even king. David
- 7:02Speaker 1: was partially king just in the tribe of Judah for
- 7:06Speaker 1: a while, and Aseel died during that time. He was
- 7:09Speaker 1: one of the brothers of joe Ab, so he's also
- 7:13Speaker 1: a notable name out of this list. But moving past
- 7:16Speaker 1: all of this into verse sixteen, it says furthermore over
- 7:21Speaker 1: the tribes of Israel, of the Rubenites, Eliezer the son
- 7:24Speaker 1: of Zikar was the ruler of the Simionites, Sfadia the
- 7:29Speaker 1: son of Maka of Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kamuel
- 7:34Speaker 1: of Aaron, Zadek of Judah, Eli Whu of the brothers
- 7:38Speaker 1: of David, of Isakar, Omri the son of Michael of
- 7:41Speaker 1: zebuln Ishmiah the son of Obadiah, and then it goes
- 7:45Speaker 1: through all the rest of the tribes of Israel and
- 7:47Speaker 1: the head of each individual tribe. We do know that
- 7:50Speaker 1: even though there was a king over everybody, each tribe
- 7:54Speaker 1: had their own ruler, sometimes called princes. But I'm not
- 7:58Speaker 1: going to focus too hard on the skies right now. Instead,
- 8:02Speaker 1: jumping down to verse twenty three. It actually mentions David's
- 8:06Speaker 1: sin once again, the sin where he went and counted Israel.
- 8:11Speaker 1: In verse twenty three, it says, but David didn't take
- 8:14Speaker 1: the number of them from twenty years old and under,
- 8:17Speaker 1: because Yahweh had said that he would increase Israel like
- 8:20Speaker 1: the stars of the sky. Joe ab the son of Zuruya,
- 8:24Speaker 1: began to take a census but didn't finish, and wrath
- 8:27Speaker 1: came on Israel for this. The number wasn't put into
- 8:29Speaker 1: the account in the Chronicles of King David, so that
- 8:33Speaker 1: is referring to the census that David took. We talked
- 8:37Speaker 1: about all of that in First Chronicles twenty one, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: we don't know exactly why it was a sin, but
- 8:43Speaker 1: it certainly was for some reason, and I did go
- 8:46Speaker 1: into some of the reasons why it might have been
- 8:49Speaker 1: a sin. Whether David was having a heart problem or
- 8:52Speaker 1: a fear problem, or maybe even something regarding him breaking
- 8:58Speaker 1: the law while he was in the process of taking
- 9:00Speaker 1: the census. We don't exactly know, but I did go
- 9:04Speaker 1: into all of that in First Chronicles twenty one. If
- 9:06Speaker 1: you guys are interested in that episode, I will link
- 9:08Speaker 1: it below, but right here in First Chronicles twenty seven.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It talks about this census once again, but it says
- 9:15Speaker 1: here that even though David sinned in counting the people,
- 9:19Speaker 1: David would not count the children. He didn't count anybody
- 9:24Speaker 1: who was under twenty years old, because Yahweh had said
- 9:28Speaker 1: he would increase Israel like the stars of this guy.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So David knew that it would be wrong to count
- 9:34Speaker 1: the children of Israel because that would be denying faith
- 9:39Speaker 1: in Yahweh that God would build Israel up. David sinned
- 9:43Speaker 1: in another way by counting the adults of Israel. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: then it also says in verse twenty four that Joe
- 9:50Speaker 1: of the son of Zaruja began to take the census
- 9:52Speaker 1: but didn't finish, and wrath came on Israel for this,
- 9:56Speaker 1: And that was something I questioned a little bit. Was
- 9:58Speaker 1: God angry because Joab did not finish the census? But personally,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I don't think that that is what Scripture is saying here,
- 10:06Speaker 1: because if you go back to First Chronicles twenty one,
- 10:08Speaker 1: when all of this was happening, you can see that
- 10:10Speaker 1: God was already angry with Israel, not because of the
- 10:14Speaker 1: census exactly, but he was angry from the start. And
- 10:18Speaker 1: he decided that he was going to judge Israel one
- 10:21Speaker 1: way or the other. And then David sinned with the
- 10:23Speaker 1: senses and that was when God showed his wrath. So no,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I don't think that Joab caused the wrath on Israel.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I think God was already wrathful with Israel, probably because
- 10:33Speaker 1: they were in rebellion again, they were maybe worshiping their idols.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Maybe he was angry over the fact that they were
- 10:39Speaker 1: constantly rebelling against David, even because God put David in place.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And you can see that when people rebel against the
- 10:49Speaker 1: leader that God puts in place, God is not happy
- 10:52Speaker 1: with that. Back in the wilderness, when God ordained Moses
- 10:56Speaker 1: as being the leader of Israel, the people who constantly
- 10:59Speaker 1: rebelled against Moses were the ones who were punished by
- 11:03Speaker 1: God because God said, no, I put Moses as your leader,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and you're going to listen to him because I ordained
- 11:10Speaker 1: him to be your leader. Nobody else. God would become
- 11:14Speaker 1: angry when people rebel against the leader that he puts
- 11:18Speaker 1: in place. And Israel, right before David took the census,
- 11:22Speaker 1: had rebelled against David hardcore, by going so far as
- 11:27Speaker 1: even trying to kill David so that David's son Absalom
- 11:31Speaker 1: could reign on the throne. All that took place right
- 11:34Speaker 1: before the census was taken. So I don't know exactly
- 11:37Speaker 1: why God was wrathful with Israel. I don't know why
- 11:41Speaker 1: the census was a sin, But in general, the entire
- 11:43Speaker 1: situation was not good. Moving forward in verse Chronicles twenty
- 11:48Speaker 1: seven and says in verse twenty five that over the
- 11:50Speaker 1: king's treasurers was Asmath, the son of Adel. Over the
- 11:55Speaker 1: treasures in the fields, in the cities, in the villages,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and in the towers was Jonathan, the son of Uzia.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Over those who did the work of the field was Ezri,
- 12:04Speaker 1: the son of Cheleib. So it goes into all these
- 12:07Speaker 1: different positions, these high ranking positions. So the treasurers, the farmers,
- 12:14Speaker 1: the vineyards, the olive trees, the herds, the camels, the donkeys,
- 12:20Speaker 1: like all of these things. There were heads of these
- 12:24Speaker 1: positions that made sure that all of the king's things
- 12:27Speaker 1: and animals were taken care of very well. Then in
- 12:31Speaker 1: verse thirty two through thirty four, it says also Jonathan,
- 12:35Speaker 1: David's uncle was a counselor, a man of understanding, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: a scribe. Jehiel the son of Hatchemoni was with the
- 12:44Speaker 1: king's sons. A Hithafel was the king's counselor. Hushai the
- 12:48Speaker 1: Archite was the king's friend. After a Hithafel was Jehoida,
- 12:53Speaker 1: the son of Benea, and abbiether Joab was the captain
- 12:56Speaker 1: of the king's army. Now it's interesting, we just talked
- 12:59Speaker 1: about it A hith Theae on Friday for the Members
- 13:02Speaker 1: podcast where we're going through the Book of the Psalms
- 13:05Speaker 1: and a Hithefel was one of David's best counselor, such
- 13:09Speaker 1: a good friend of his, but he was one of
- 13:12Speaker 1: the people who actually rebelled against David the worst during
- 13:17Speaker 1: that whole thing with Absalom. A Hitherefel totally sided with
- 13:21Speaker 1: Absalom and started counseling Absolom as to how he could
- 13:24Speaker 1: get the throne for himself, including how he could kill David.
- 13:29Speaker 1: A Hitherefel wanted to kill David, so he started out
- 13:32Speaker 1: as a good friend, a fantastic counselor, but betrayed David
- 13:37Speaker 1: later on in life. So it says after a Hithefel,
- 13:40Speaker 1: meaning after a Hithefel died because a Hitherfel ended up
- 13:43Speaker 1: killing himself was Jehoida, the son of Benea, an abbie
- 13:47Speaker 1: ather Joab was the captain of the king's army. I
- 13:51Speaker 1: just love that Joeab just gets kind of like a
- 13:53Speaker 1: side note. I don't know, David couldn't stand Joab. Every
- 13:57Speaker 1: single time David and Joeb have like a conversation with
- 14:02Speaker 1: each other, it kind of seems like David is at
- 14:03Speaker 1: like the end of his rope where he's just like,
- 14:06Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I can't stand joe Ab. So Job
- 14:10Speaker 1: just kind of gets like a side note here in
- 14:13Speaker 1: First Chronicles, It's just sort of funny. But now moving
- 14:16Speaker 1: on to First Chronicles twenty eight, it says in verse one,
- 14:20Speaker 1: David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of
- 14:24Speaker 1: the tribes, the captains of the companies who served the
- 14:27Speaker 1: king by division, the captains of thousands, the captains of hundreds,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and the rulers over the substance and possessions of the
- 14:33Speaker 1: King and his sons, with the officers and the mighty men,
- 14:37Speaker 1: even all the mighty men of Valor to Jerusalem. So
- 14:41Speaker 1: that would probably be referring to everybody we just talked
- 14:44Speaker 1: about in the previous chapters, the levites that led certain things,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and then also the captains of the armies, the princes
- 14:52Speaker 1: of Israel, and pretty much everybody else that was a
- 14:54Speaker 1: leader in Israel. David called them all together to him,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and here's what happened. It says that he stood up
- 15:01Speaker 1: on his feet. Now, if you know how old David
- 15:04Speaker 1: was at this point in time, and how sickly he was,
- 15:07Speaker 1: this was something probably very difficult for David to do
- 15:11Speaker 1: during the end of his life, which has talked about
- 15:14Speaker 1: in First Kings. I believe David was so sickly that
- 15:18Speaker 1: he could barely get out of bed. He was in bed,
- 15:23Speaker 1: he was so cold all the time. So the fact
- 15:27Speaker 1: that David stood up on his feet, this shows that
- 15:29Speaker 1: he is something very important to say. Verse two, hear me,
- 15:34Speaker 1: brothers and my people. As for me, it was in
- 15:37Speaker 1: my heart to build a house of rest for the
- 15:40Speaker 1: ark of Yahweh's covenant and for the footstool of our God.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And I had prepared for the building. But God said
- 15:46Speaker 1: to me, you shall not build a house for my name,
- 15:48Speaker 1: because you are a man of war and of shed blood. However, Yahweh,
- 15:51Speaker 1: the God of Israel, chose me out of all the
- 15:54Speaker 1: house of my father, to be king over Israel forever,
- 15:57Speaker 1: for he has chosen Judah to be prince. And in
- 16:00Speaker 1: the house of Judah, the house of my father, and
- 16:02Speaker 1: among the sons of my father, he took pleasure in
- 16:04Speaker 1: me to make me king over all Israel of all
- 16:08Speaker 1: my sons, for Yahweh has given me many sons. He
- 16:11Speaker 1: has chosen Solomon, my son, to sit on the throne
- 16:13Speaker 1: of Yahwai's kingdom over Israel. And he said to me, Solomon,
- 16:17Speaker 1: your son shall build my house and my courts, for
- 16:20Speaker 1: I have chosen him to be my son, and I
- 16:22Speaker 1: will be his father, and I will establish his kingdom
- 16:25Speaker 1: forever if he continues to do my commandments and my
- 16:28Speaker 1: ordinances as it is today. So as we've been reading
- 16:33Speaker 1: about in the past few chapters, David had an obsession.
- 16:38Speaker 1: He was obsessed with building the temple to God. In fact,
- 16:41Speaker 1: he actually writes about it in the Psalms on several
- 16:44Speaker 1: occasions of how he just longs to be in God's house.
- 16:48Speaker 1: And in the last few chapters of First Chronicles, he
- 16:50Speaker 1: was acquiring all of these materials for the temple. He
- 16:53Speaker 1: was making plans for it so much so that all
- 16:57Speaker 1: Solomon really had to do was like tell his men
- 17:01Speaker 1: to go because the plans were already laid out. The
- 17:05Speaker 1: area where the temple was going to be built was
- 17:08Speaker 1: already purchased and ready to go. Everything was ready, It
- 17:12Speaker 1: just needed to be put together basically, So that begs
- 17:16Speaker 1: the question, did David kind of disobey God by doing
- 17:20Speaker 1: a technicality? Yes, God, I'm not going to build the temple.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm just going to pre build it. I'm just going
- 17:28Speaker 1: to you know, make all the plans for it and
- 17:32Speaker 1: acquire all of these materials. I'm not going to be
- 17:34Speaker 1: the one to build it, but I will do everything
- 17:35Speaker 1: that it takes to actually build it, and then I'll
- 17:38Speaker 1: command everybody to build it after I die, which is
- 17:41Speaker 1: what he's doing in First Chronicles twenty eight. You know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: he is making it very clear that he wants this
- 17:47Speaker 1: temple to be built. So he kind of got a wonder.
- 17:50Speaker 1: You know, where was David's heart in all of this?
- 17:52Speaker 1: Was he in a sense kind of disobeying God by
- 17:56Speaker 1: trying to get this temple built? But we don't really
- 17:59Speaker 1: know the answer to that. It could be that David
- 18:01Speaker 1: just had a fervor for God and truly believed that
- 18:05Speaker 1: the temple was what was going to help Israel get
- 18:08Speaker 1: on the right track with God, and I do think
- 18:11Speaker 1: that was more where David was thinking and feeling. However,
- 18:15Speaker 1: the other question we got asked with all of this
- 18:18Speaker 1: was did God even want this temple to begin with?
- 18:21Speaker 1: Because if we look at Second Samuel chapter seven, when
- 18:25Speaker 1: the prophecy first happens, when David is like, I am
- 18:28Speaker 1: going to build this temple to God, God comes back
- 18:32Speaker 1: to David and says, no, You're not going to build it.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Like thanks, but no thanks. Here's what Second Samuel seven
- 18:40Speaker 1: four through seven says that same night, Yahwai's word came
- 18:43Speaker 1: to Nathan saying, go and tell my servant, David. Yahways says,
- 18:47Speaker 1: should you build me a house for me to dwell in?
- 18:49Speaker 1: For I have not lived in a house since the
- 18:51Speaker 1: day that I brought the children of Israel up out
- 18:52Speaker 1: of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around
- 18:55Speaker 1: in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all the
- 18:58Speaker 1: places in which I have walked with all the children
- 19:00Speaker 1: of Israel, did I say a word to anyone from
- 19:02Speaker 1: the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd
- 19:05Speaker 1: of my people Israel, saying why have you not built
- 19:08Speaker 1: me a house of cedar. God goes on to explain
- 19:11Speaker 1: in verses eight through sixteen that David was not going
- 19:14Speaker 1: to build this house to God. Instead, God was going
- 19:18Speaker 1: to build David a house, which of course is very true.
- 19:22Speaker 1: You know, God indeed built David a house to the
- 19:26Speaker 1: point where David is the most popular king in Israel's
- 19:29Speaker 1: history that even you know people nowadays know who David is.
- 19:34Speaker 1: And God also tells David that there's going to be
- 19:37Speaker 1: a son who comes out of his own body, meaning
- 19:40Speaker 1: his line, his lineage, who is going to build Yahweh
- 19:45Speaker 1: a house. But God doesn't mention the name of that son.
- 19:50Speaker 1: He doesn't say Solomon is that son, which means that
- 19:55Speaker 1: very likely when God tells David he's going to give
- 19:58Speaker 1: him a son who's going to build Yahweh a house,
- 20:02Speaker 1: he's referring to Jesus obviously, who is from the line
- 20:06Speaker 1: and lineage of David. So that passage to me does
- 20:09Speaker 1: not sound like God wants David or even Solomon to
- 20:15Speaker 1: build this temple to him. And here's why, because first
- 20:19Speaker 1: and foremost the temple was going to be grand and glorious.
- 20:23Speaker 1: That is what David says in First Chronicles twenty two,
- 20:26Speaker 1: verse five. He tells Solomon the house that is to
- 20:29Speaker 1: be built for Yahweh must be exceedingly magnificent of fame
- 20:34Speaker 1: and glory throughout all countries. Now, of course, that is
- 20:37Speaker 1: probably David saying, you know, I want Yahweh worship to
- 20:41Speaker 1: be the most beautiful worship in the world. I want
- 20:43Speaker 1: other people to look at what we're doing and incorporate
- 20:46Speaker 1: that into their countries and their culture. But if you
- 20:51Speaker 1: look at Exodus chapter twenty, God did not really want
- 20:57Speaker 1: grandiose temples or all is built to him. Here's what
- 21:01Speaker 1: Exodus twenty, verse twenty five says, if you make an
- 21:04Speaker 1: altar of stones for me, do not build it with
- 21:06Speaker 1: dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use
- 21:09Speaker 1: a tool on it. And of course, again that was
- 21:12Speaker 1: because the altars were not supposed to be beautiful and magnificent.
- 21:18Speaker 1: They were just supposed to be a tool in getting
- 21:20Speaker 1: closer to God. And if somebody is taking the time
- 21:24Speaker 1: to build this beautiful altar to God, that would eventually
- 21:28Speaker 1: cause people to start potentially worshiping the altar itself rather
- 21:32Speaker 1: than God, and it would kind of ruin the true
- 21:35Speaker 1: significance of the altar if it's a beautiful altar to
- 21:39Speaker 1: look at basically. And then on top of this, if
- 21:41Speaker 1: you go to Acts chapter seven, all the way in
- 21:44Speaker 1: the New Testament, Stephen is talking to the Pharisees. This
- 21:50Speaker 1: is right before Stephen dies, and he is telling them
- 21:53Speaker 1: everything that they have done wrong from the beginning of
- 21:58Speaker 1: Israel's existence, and he mentions the tabernacle here and the
- 22:03Speaker 1: temple Acts seven forty four through fifty one. Stephen says this,
- 22:09Speaker 1: our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness,
- 22:12Speaker 1: even as he spoke to Moses, commanding him to make
- 22:14Speaker 1: it according to the pattern that he had seen, which
- 22:17Speaker 1: also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua
- 22:20Speaker 1: when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom
- 22:23Speaker 1: God drove out before the face of our fathers. To
- 22:25Speaker 1: the day of David, who found favor in the sight
- 22:28Speaker 1: of God and asked to find a habitation for the
- 22:30Speaker 1: God of Jacob, but Solomon built him a house. However,
- 22:34Speaker 1: the Most High doesn't dwell in temples made with hands.
- 22:36Speaker 1: As the prophet says, heaven is my throne, and the
- 22:39Speaker 1: earth is a footstool from my feet? What kind of
- 22:41Speaker 1: a house will you build me, says the Lord? Or
- 22:44Speaker 1: what is the place of my rest? Didn't my hand
- 22:46Speaker 1: make all these things? You stiff necked and uncircumcised in
- 22:50Speaker 1: heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit as
- 22:53Speaker 1: your fathers did, so you do. I think that's pretty
- 22:58Speaker 1: clear that the Temple over time became a stumbling block
- 23:03Speaker 1: for the people, right, meaning they started worshiping the temple
- 23:06Speaker 1: and the significance of the temple more than they worshiped God.
- 23:12Speaker 1: They worshiped their religiosity more than they worshiped God, and
- 23:16Speaker 1: the temple became an idol to them. And that is
- 23:20Speaker 1: what Stephen, I believe, is saying in Acts chapter seven.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So whether or not God wanted the Temple, it doesn't
- 23:27Speaker 1: specifically say in scripture. God was not like, I do
- 23:30Speaker 1: not want this. Well, actually he kind of was. He
- 23:33Speaker 1: kind of did say that to David, but later on
- 23:35Speaker 1: to Solomon. He did not specifically say to Solomon, I
- 23:37Speaker 1: do not want this temple. So scripture does not specifically
- 23:40Speaker 1: say that God definitely did not want the Temple built. Ever,
- 23:45Speaker 1: but there are certainly things in scripture that imply that
- 23:48Speaker 1: God might not have wanted this temple to be built,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and he might be like, well, Jen, why did he
- 23:54Speaker 1: allow the temple to be built? Then? At that point, Well,
- 23:57Speaker 1: because God is kind and gracious, and I think he
- 24:00Speaker 1: saw David's heart. I don't necessarily believe that David had
- 24:04Speaker 1: wrong motives with wanting to build the temple. And God
- 24:08Speaker 1: is merciful and loving and kind, and so if David
- 24:11Speaker 1: was this insistent on building the temple, I think God
- 24:15Speaker 1: allowed it and eventually was just like, all right, fine,
- 24:20Speaker 1: if you want the temple so bad, you can have
- 24:22Speaker 1: the temple and plus the temple. Of course it was
- 24:25Speaker 1: to God. It was not always bad, It was not
- 24:29Speaker 1: always wrong. You know, the people I'm sure did find
- 24:32Speaker 1: God going to that temple did get a good relationship
- 24:36Speaker 1: with God by offering the sacrifices. So the temple was
- 24:40Speaker 1: not all bad. But I certainly think that God had
- 24:43Speaker 1: foresight into what the temple would become, and that's maybe
- 24:46Speaker 1: why he didn't necessarily want it. There's one other point
- 24:50Speaker 1: that may prove that God did not want the temple.
- 24:53Speaker 1: That's from First Chronicles twenty three, verse twenty six, when
- 24:59Speaker 1: David is talking about how the Levites are now going
- 25:02Speaker 1: to oversee the temple worship. Here's what David says to them.
- 25:08Speaker 1: The Levites will no longer need to carry the Tabernacle
- 25:11Speaker 1: in all its vessels for service. But that was what
- 25:15Speaker 1: God wanted from the beginning. He wanted the people to
- 25:19Speaker 1: carry the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant. The
- 25:22Speaker 1: Ark of the Covenant was literally built to be carried.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It had poles in it so the Levites could take
- 25:28Speaker 1: it with them wherever the people went. Even the ten
- 25:32Speaker 1: of Meeting, the Tabernacle had poles and loops and ropes
- 25:36Speaker 1: and everything so that the people could carry it with them.
- 25:41Speaker 1: It was designed to be carried, and God specifically designed
- 25:46Speaker 1: it to be carried. But now that the Temple is
- 25:49Speaker 1: being built a solid structure, nothing is going to be
- 25:53Speaker 1: carried anymore. And it's kind of against God's original design
- 25:57Speaker 1: for the Tabernacle for the place of worship for the people.
- 26:02Speaker 1: And of course the reason God originally designed it to
- 26:05Speaker 1: be carried was because it was going to the people.
- 26:09Speaker 1: God was showing the people, I am among you, I
- 26:12Speaker 1: am with you, I am traveling alongside you, I am
- 26:16Speaker 1: walking with you. I am going to be wherever you're
- 26:19Speaker 1: at that was the point of it being carried. But
- 26:22Speaker 1: now the temple that David is very insistent on building,
- 26:28Speaker 1: it's not going to have that feature anymore. It's going
- 26:30Speaker 1: to be just stuck in the ground and everybody has
- 26:32Speaker 1: to come to it, and that of course would change
- 26:35Speaker 1: how worship was done in Israel. But going back to
- 26:39Speaker 1: First Chronicles twenty eight, you know, David is very insistent,
- 26:43Speaker 1: He's kind of got this obsession, and he says that
- 26:45Speaker 1: God told him that his son Solomon was going to
- 26:49Speaker 1: be the one to build him a house. That's what
- 26:52Speaker 1: he says in verse six. God said to me, Solomon,
- 26:55Speaker 1: your son shall build my house and my courts, for
- 26:58Speaker 1: I have chosen him to be my son, and today
- 27:00Speaker 1: I will be his father. But once again, if you
- 27:03Speaker 1: look back at the original prophecy that God gave to David,
- 27:08Speaker 1: Solomon was not mentioned in that prophecy, just one of
- 27:12Speaker 1: David's sons. And so it could be I'm not saying
- 27:16Speaker 1: this specifically, and I want to handle this with some care,
- 27:19Speaker 1: because it could be that God did say to David
- 27:22Speaker 1: that Solomon was going to build this temple, and David
- 27:25Speaker 1: specifically was stating something he heard directly from God. But
- 27:29Speaker 1: There's also a possibility that David just believed in his
- 27:33Speaker 1: heart that Solomon was going to be the one to
- 27:35Speaker 1: do it and kind of put words in God's mouth.
- 27:39Speaker 1: But I don't know, and I'm not going to say
- 27:41Speaker 1: either way because I want to handle this kind of
- 27:43Speaker 1: stuff with care. Solomon certainly could have been the one
- 27:47Speaker 1: that God chose to build a temple. Maybe God definitely
- 27:50Speaker 1: wanted it built just because of the amount of high
- 27:54Speaker 1: places that were happening in Israel at this time, and
- 27:56Speaker 1: God just wanted those gone and everybody to go to
- 27:59Speaker 1: one central way location. Or it could be that when
- 28:01Speaker 1: God was talking about David's son, that he was talking
- 28:05Speaker 1: about Jesus and Solomon was not who God was talking about,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but David just believed that. But that's where I'm going
- 28:12Speaker 1: to end today, and we'll talk about the rest of
- 28:14Speaker 1: First Chronicles twenty eight on Wednesday. So actually we will
- 28:17Speaker 1: be finishing First Chronicles next week, not on Wednesday like
- 28:22Speaker 1: I initially thought, because this episode's getting a little bit long.
- 28:25Speaker 1: But anyway, faithful listeners, I hope to see all of
- 28:26Speaker 1: you guys on Wednesday as we finish up First Chronicles
- 28:29Speaker 1: twenty eight, and we'll probably also delve into First Chronicles
- 28:33Speaker 1: twenty nine a little bit as well. Anyway, faithful listeners
- 28:36Speaker 1: have a fantastic and wonderful rest of your day, happy listening,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and God bless
