Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Bible Stories You Should Know: David's Sling
Transcript
- 0:00We often picture Bible stories through the lens of children's Bible storybooks.
- 0:18David and Goliath becomes a small boy, a giant, a rock, and a lucky throw.
- 0:25But what if that picture is completely wrong?
- 0:29What if standing in that valley was not a young kid with a toy,
- 0:32but instead a trained marksman holding a battlefield weapon?
- 0:37A shepherd who had spent years mastering a tool that ancient armies respected and feared?
- 0:43We welcome you to another edition of Traveler's Tales.
- 0:46I'm your host, Greg Delly.
- 0:48We love sharing stories of faith from fellow travelers,
- 0:52whether that's through hymn histories or the powerful stories of lives transformed by God.
- 0:59But today, we're expanding the journey.
- 1:02Because when you travel across the world, you discover something quickly.
- 1:06Every place has its own culture, its own landscape, its own way of life.
- 1:11And when we open our Bible, we are stepping into a world just like that,
- 1:16a world of shepherds and soldiers, deserts and valleys, tools and traditions that shaped everyday life.
- 1:24So today, we begin exploring Bible culture, customs, and geography
- 1:29to better understand the stories we've loved our entire lives.
- 1:33We're grateful for one of the friends of Enjoying the Journey, John Buckner,
- 1:37for his insight after spending several years in Jerusalem completing a master's degree in classical Hebrew.
- 1:45He has dedicated his life to the study of God's Word.
- 1:49Today, we're traveling to the Valley of Elah.
- 1:52The Scripture says,
- 1:54And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he assayed to go, for he had not proved it.
- 2:00And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not proved them.
- 2:04And David put them off him.
- 2:06And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook.
- 2:12And he put them in a shepherd's bag, which he had even in a scrimp.
- 2:16And his sling was in his hand, and he drew nearer to the Philistine.
- 2:211 Samuel 17, verses 39 and 40.
- 2:25In Bible times, slings were not toys.
- 2:29They were weapons of war.
- 2:31Ancient armies trained entire groups of soldiers as slingers.
- 2:37The Bible tells us King Uzziah equipped his army with slings as part of their military arsenal.
- 2:43In another battle, slingers helped destroy Moabite stronghold.
- 2:47Modern testing of ancient-style slings reveals something incredible.
- 2:52A trained slinger could be accurate up to about 400 yards.
- 2:57The stones would often weigh close to a half pound,
- 3:00and these stones could travel over 100 miles per hour.
- 3:04That means a sling could outrange many archers and javelin throwers of the ancient world.
- 3:10And in Israel, a rocky land, ammunition was everywhere.
- 3:15Some slingers were legendary for accuracy.
- 3:19Judges chapter 20 tells us about 700 left-handed warriors
- 3:23who could hit a target at a hair breadth and not miss.
- 3:28Think about that.
- 3:30Every stone is different, different weight, shape, different balance.
- 3:35But they trained until variability didn't matter.
- 3:39Ancient generals like Hannibal and Julius Caesar prized slingers.
- 3:44Historians recorded that some could strike enemies before they ever reached battle distance.
- 3:50David was not improvising that day.
- 3:53He was operating inside a real, known military system of his world.
- 3:59Now think about the geography of the story.
- 4:02David chose stones from a brook,
- 4:05likely part of the seasonal stream running through the Valley of Elah.
- 4:09River stones matter.
- 4:11Not flat stones, not jagged stones.
- 4:14Smooth stones. Dense stones.
- 4:17Rounded stones that fly straight and true.
- 4:21David likely examined each stone carefully.
- 4:24This was not random. This was preparation.
- 4:27Why five stones?
- 4:29Some Bible students believe David chose five stones
- 4:32because Goliath came from a family of giants,
- 4:35and Scripture later records four more giants from the same lineage.
- 4:39David wasn't assuming an easy victory.
- 4:41He was preparing for a real fight.
- 4:44But here is perhaps the most important part of the story.
- 4:48The Bible says Goliath disdained David.
- 4:52He saw a shepherd.
- 4:54He saw a staff.
- 4:55A sling.
- 4:56A boy.
- 4:58He did not see training.
- 5:00He did not see experience.
- 5:02He did not see courage.
- 5:04And most importantly, he did not see the God of Israel.
- 5:09To the ancient eye, a sling looked unimpressive.
- 5:14Just rope and leather.
- 5:16To the modern world, faith can look the same way.
- 5:19Just a Bible.
- 5:21Just a prayer.
- 5:22Just church.
- 5:23Just faith.
- 5:25But heaven sees something different.
- 5:27Power.
- 5:28Authority.
- 5:29Victory.
- 5:31David didn't learn his sling on the day of battle.
- 5:35No, he learned it in obscurity, in the desert,
- 5:38watching sheep, fighting lions and bears,
- 5:42when no one was watching and no one was applauding.
- 5:46And when the day came, he didn't walk toward Goliath.
- 5:50He ran.
- 5:53Friend, if you want David-sized victories in your life,
- 5:57you need David-sized preparation.
- 6:00Learn your weapon, the Word of God.
- 6:03Practice prayer daily.
- 6:05Spend time with God when no one is watching.
- 6:08Because battles don't create warriors, they reveal them.
- 6:12And when your moment comes,
- 6:14run in faith and confidence in God toward the giants.
- 6:19The Bible reminds us in 2 Corinthians 10, verses 3 and 4,
- 6:23For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh.
- 6:27For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,
- 6:30but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.
