- 0:35of basketball's biggest stars, Kevin Durant.
- 0:38If you love basketball, or even if you're just curious about
- 0:42famous athletes, you're in for a treat.
- 0:44Let's lace up our sneakers and get started.
- 0:47First, let's talk about who Kevin Durant is.
- 0:50Kevin Durant is a professional basketball player in the
- 0:53National Basketball Association, which is called the NBA for
- 0:56short. The NBA is the most famous
- 0:59basketball league in the world, and its players are known for
- 1:02their amazing skills and athletic abilities.
- 1:05Kevin Durant is considered one of the best basketball players
- 1:09of his generation. Kevin Durant was born on
- 1:11September 29th, 1988, in Washington, DC, the capital of
- 1:17the United States. That means he grew up in a big,
- 1:20busy city, not far from the famous monuments and museums you
- 1:24might see on a trip to Washington.
- 1:26But even though he grew up in a city filled with history and
- 1:29politics, it was sports, especially basketball, that
- 1:33caught Kevin's attention from an early age.
- 1:35When Kevin was a kid, he was much taller than most of his
- 1:39friends. In fact, by the time he was 13,
- 1:42he was already about 6 feet tall.
- 1:44That's almost as tall as many adults.
- 1:47Being tall definitely helps in basketball, but Kevin also
- 1:50worked really hard on his skills.
- 1:53He practiced shooting, dribbling, and running fast up
- 1:55and down the court. He would spend hours and hours
- 1:58at the gym or on the playground, always trying to get better.
- 2:02Did you know that Kevin Durant wore the number 35 on his jersey
- 2:05for many years? He chose this number to honor
- 2:08his childhood basketball coach, Charles Craig, who passed away
- 2:12when Kevin was just a kid. Coach Craig was 35 years old,
- 2:16and Kevin wanted to remember him every time he played.
- 2:19That shows how much Kevin appreciated the people who
- 2:22helped him along the way. Let's talk about Kevin's journey
- 2:25from being a kid who loved basketball to becoming a
- 2:28professional athlete. In high school, Kevin played for
- 2:31several different schools, always looking for the best
- 2:34competition and the best coaches.
- 2:37He was so good that people around the country started to
- 2:39notice him. He was named one of the top high
- 2:42school basketball players in the United States.
- 2:45After high school, Kevin went to college at the University of
- 2:48Texas. He played just one season of
- 2:50college basketball, but he made a huge impact.
- 2:53He was named the best college basketball player in the
- 2:56country, which is a very big deal.
- 2:58After just one year in college, Kevin decided to enter the NBA
- 3:02Draft. The NBA Draft is an event where
- 3:05professional teams pick the best young players to join their
- 3:07teams. In 2007, Kevin Durant was chosen
- 3:11with the second overall pick in the NBA Draft by a team called
- 3:15the Seattle SuperSonics. That means he was the second
- 3:18player chosen out of all the young players wanting to join
- 3:21the NBA that year. Right away, Kevin made a big
- 3:24impression. He won the NBA Rookie of the
- 3:26Year award, which means he was considered the best new player
- 3:30in the whole league. After his first season, the
- 3:32Seattle SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the
- 3:36Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin moved with the team and
- 3:39continued to get better every year.
- 3:42He worked on his shooting, his defense, and helped his team win
- 3:45lots of games. Kevin became famous for his
- 3:48smooth jump shot, which is when a player jumps and shoots the
- 3:51basketball in one motion. He's known for being able to
- 3:54score a lot of points even when defenders are trying to stop
- 3:57him. Kevin Durant is not just tall,
- 4:00he's about 6 foot 10 inches, but he's also really skilled and
- 4:04athletic. He can dribble the basketball
- 4:06like a guard, which is usually a job for the shorter, quicker
- 4:09players. He can shoot from almost
- 4:11anywhere on the court, and he's especially good at 3 point
- 4:15shots. A three-point shot is when you
- 4:17score from behind a special line on the court, earning 3 points
- 4:21instead of the usual 2. Did you know that Kevin Durant
- 4:24has won the NBA scoring title 4 times?
- 4:27That means he scored more points than any other player in the
- 4:30league during the regular season.
- 4:31Not just once, but four different times.
- 4:34Scoring so many points takes a lot of skill, focus, and
- 4:38practice. Kevin works hard every day to
- 4:41stay at the top of his game. Let's talk about some of the
- 4:44teams Kevin Durant has played for.
- 4:46We already mentioned the Seattle SuperSonics and the Oklahoma
- 4:49City Thunder. Kevin played for the Thunder for
- 4:52several years and even helped lead them to the NBA Finals in
- 4:562012. The NBA Finals is the
- 4:59championship series where the two best teams in the league
- 5:01play each other to see who wins the title.
- 5:04Although the Thunder didn't win that year, Kevin's performance
- 5:07was a big reason why they made it.
- 5:09So In 2016, Kevin made a big decision.
- 5:13He chose to join the Golden State Warriors A-Team based in
- 5:17California. This move surprised a lot of
- 5:19basketball fans, but it turned out to be a great decision for
- 5:23Kevin. With the Warriors, he won two
- 5:25NBA championships in 2017 and 2018.
- 5:30Winning a championship means your team is the best in the
- 5:33whole league, and it's the dream of every NBA player.
- 5:37Kevin was even named the NBA Final Most Valuable Player both
- 5:41years, which means he was the best player in the most
- 5:43important games. Here's another fun fact.
- 5:47Kevin Durant has also played for Team USA in the Olympics.
- 5:50The Olympics are a huge international sports event held
- 5:54every four years with athletes from all around the world.
- 5:57Kevin has helped Team USA win 3 gold medals in men's basketball.
- 6:02He played in the 2012, 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games and each time
- 6:09he was one of the best players on the court.
- 6:11Beings an Olympic gold medalist is a huge honor and shows that
- 6:15Kevin can compete with the best players from all over the world.
- 6:18After his time with the Warriors, Kevin Durant signed
- 6:21with the Brooklyn Nets, a team in New York City.
- 6:24He joined the team in 2019, although he had to miss a whole
- 6:28season because of an injury. Injuries are a part of sports
- 6:32and sometimes athletes have to rest and recover before they can
- 6:35play again. Kevin worked hard to get healthy
- 6:38and return to the court stronger than ever.
- 6:41Did you know that Kevin Durant is known for his kindness off
- 6:44the court as well? He started the Kevin Durant
- 6:46Charity Foundation, which helps kids and and families in need.
- 6:50His foundation builds basketball courts in different
- 6:53neighborhoods so kids have a safe place to play.
- 6:56He also supports education programs and help students go to
- 6:59college. Kevin believes it's important to
- 7:02give back to the community and help others succeed.
- 7:05Let's talk a little bit about what makes Kevin Durant such a
- 7:08special player. It's not just as height,
- 7:11although being tall does help in basketball.
- 7:13Kevin is known for his incredible shooting ability.
- 7:16He can make shots from long distances, even when defenders
- 7:19are trying to block him. He's also great at driving to
- 7:22the basket, which means running toward the hoop and scoring
- 7:25close shots. His long arms help him block
- 7:28shots on defense and grab lots of rebounds, which is when a
- 7:31player catches the ball after a missed shot.
- 7:34Kevin is also known for his strong work ethic.
- 7:37That means he practices a lot, listens to his coaches, and
- 7:40always tries to improve. Even though he's one of the best
- 7:43players in the world, he never stops working on his game.
- 7:46This is a great lesson for anyone.
- 7:48If you want to be good at something, you have to practice
- 7:50and keep trying, even when it's hard.
- 7:53Another interesting fact is that Kevin Durant loves to learn new
- 7:56things. He enjoys reading and listening
- 7:59to music. He even likes to play video
- 8:01games in his free time. Kevin has talked about how
- 8:04important it is to find balance in life, working hard but also
- 8:08making time for friends, family and fun activities.
- 8:12Kevin has also faced challenges. In 2019, he suffered a serious
- 8:17injury called an Achilles tendon tear.
- 8:20This is a painful injury that can take a long time to heal.
- 8:24Some athletes never come back the same after this type of
- 8:27injury. But Kevin worked very hard with
- 8:30his doctors and trainers and after more than a year of
- 8:33recovery, he returned to the NBA.
- 8:35He showed everyone that hard work and determination can help
- 8:39you overcome obstacles. Did you know that Kevin Durant
- 8:42is one of the highest scoring players in NBA history?
- 8:45He has scored over 27,000 points in his career so far.
- 8:49That's a huge number. To put it in perspective, most
- 8:53NBA players never reach even 10,000 points.
- 8:57Kevin is also one of the youngest players to reach that
- 9:00milestone. Let's recap some of Kevin
- 9:03Durant's biggest achievements. He's a two time NBA Champion and
- 9:07a two time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player.
- 9:11He's won the NBA scoring title 4 times.
- 9:14He's a three time Olympic gold medalist.
- 9:17He's been named an NBA All Star more than 10 times.
- 9:21An NBA All Star is a player chosen as one of the best in the
- 9:24league and they get to play in a special game called the All Star
- 9:28Game every year. Kevin Durant is famous for more
- 9:31than just his basketball skills. He's known for being a good
- 9:34teammate, a leader, and someone who helps others.
- 9:38He supports his friends and encourages young players to work
- 9:41hard and believe in themselves. He's also very honest about his
- 9:45journey and isn't afraid to talk about the tough times or
- 9:49mistakes he's made. If you've ever played basketball
- 9:51or watched a game, you know how exciting it can be.
- 9:55Players have to run fast, jump high, shoot accurately, and work
- 9:59together as a team. Kevin Durant is a great example
- 10:02of what you can achieve with talent, dedication, and a
- 10:05positive attitude. So what can we learn from Kevin
- 10:09Durant? First, that hard work really
- 10:11does pay off. Kevin practiced for hours and
- 10:14hours even when no one was watching. 2nd, that it's
- 10:18important to listen to your coaches, teachers, and family
- 10:21members who want to help you succeed. 3rd, that giving back
- 10:25to your community and helping others is just as important as
- 10:28winning games or scoring points. Let's finish with a few more fun
- 10:32facts about Kevin Durant. He wears size 18 basketball
- 10:36shoes. That's really big.
- 10:38He has a wingspan of about 7 feet 5 inches, which means his
- 10:42arms are very long. This helps in block shots and
- 10:45reach for rebounds. Kevin is also very active on
- 10:49social media where he shares photos, videos, and messages
- 10:53with his fans. He loves to connect with people
- 10:55who support him and encourages young athletes to chase their
- 10:59dreams. Kevin also enjoys travelling and
- 11:02learning about different cultures.
- 11:04Basketball has taken him all around the world, from the
- 11:06United States to Europe, Asia, and beyond.
- 11:10He's met fans in many countries and believes that sports can
- 11:13bring people together no matter where they live.
