- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm excited.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: You know, I've had the opportunity to quickly chat with you.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: But I want you to, Anna, if you could spend a couple of minutes, let's get to know you.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I want to welcome you to our Diva family.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: But spend about a couple of minutes here letting us know who you are.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, no, not a problem.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So my name is Anna, and I am the founder of Empower Advisors, Inc.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And I created Empower in 2004.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And I couldn't leave my kids.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: My son was like, I like it when you come home or when I come home from school and you're home.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So I felt like, wow, they really want me.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So I created Empower Advisors.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: So part of my background was I was a social worker for over 15 years working within the foster care system and children's services.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So a lot of my work was very heavy and very tiring.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And I thought...
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: There has to be something better I can do than just this.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I was getting really tired of the politics and the full-time hours.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: And so I decided to stem into mediation.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I took training.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So Empire Advisor is a mediation private practice.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And basically all I do is resolve conflict with different parties, which is awesome because...
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: That's exactly what I needed to do in my life.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I needed to be a part of that resolution with people, encourage people to find conflict, to resolve conflict, and preserve their relationships.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And I love that for me in my life.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And I can't even tell you that I really learned a lot about myself after doing this training.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: I have so much more better relationships now.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: with my people.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I have better arguments with my husband.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: So that's a little bit about me.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just love that call.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And Anna, I think
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: it's amazing because we don't realize how important communication is.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And if we're not communicating properly, we just think...
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: That's when things happen.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: We need to understand.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: We need to get our point across.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: But yeah, if we're not communicating in the right way, then that's when all the fighting happens.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: That's when everything happens.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And I love that because you're able to sit down with individuals.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: You're able to help them with that communication process.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And so that if they're in regards even with marriages, because that's a huge thing.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: There's divorces happening all the time now because I think it's that breakdown, that lack of communication because nobody knows how to talk to each other anymore.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's true.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people, especially now social media technology has taken over.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I think people are talking less to each other.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So when they're talking less, they're communicating less.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Regardless of texting or anything, text has no tone.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Text has no body language.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: So the other party is assuming conversation and how the tone is.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And that can create conflict.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: But the shift that can happen when two people are open to hearing each other is just amazing.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: It's just amazing.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: My focus is–
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, go ahead.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I was just going to say, so do you do a lot– I know that you're probably doing a lot of one-on-one because that's the– or working within that group dynamics of the two people.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: But is there– I'm curious about this.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Is there like– Is there like couples retreats?
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Like I don't know if that's even something that people would do, but is that like a thing that, you know, you can see how other people are kind of interacting with others too?
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Or do you think it's because it's a very personal thing that it's better just to do, you know, the individuals that are involved?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: That's a good question.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of my clients that are couples, they do tend to want to keep it under wraps.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So they're very private.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So I was...
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: thinking about collaborating with someone in regards of a retreat for couples so then they can have a whole thing of a whole whack weekend of communication.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: But for the most part, most of the couples like to keep it more private.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Just because I think we're still living in a world of shame and people who contemplate divorce don't want to say they're contemplating divorce because it's the shameful thing.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: and people don't want to know that they're fighting with their husband because it's shameful.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: So we're living in a world of shame, and we're fighting under, and we're scared to reach out to people who can't help us.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And that just breaks your heart, doesn't it?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Because we're supposed to be living in a more open world, an open society where everything seems to be okay with things, but yet when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of things, we're still very private, very...
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like you're saying, you're using the word shame, embarrassed.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: We don't want to really show who we really are.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: And that's hard.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: We are.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: We're living in such a very open society now, but yet we're very private, I guess, in that way.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And I think if we were to learn how to communicate better with one another, we would be able to, like you were saying earlier, we can communicate not just with our spouses.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: We can work with our partner, like our business partners, with our children, with so many people.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: people.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to break this down a little bit.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: How can you work with it?
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Because obviously you don't just work with couples.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: You're working with individuals.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Is this something, I don't know, do you offer like a webinar out there that, okay, we're going to be talking about how to communicate, how we work through things.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Is that something that you do with people too?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Usually my go-to format is workshops.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I love workshops.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And so I do have a recurring communication workshop that is for the general public.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And I have one specifically for separation and divorce.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And I have one specifically for couples.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So I do offer workshops.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: I am in the works of doing something online webinar.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So keep an eye out on that.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: It'll happen.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I think it's a tool that everyone needs to have.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and maybe a retreat is in the future.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that's wonderful.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of our listeners are throughout, you know, North America into Europe.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: And I know that you are based in Alberta and Edmonton specifically.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And I just thought, okay, well, how can our ladies out there that do tune into our show, how can they work with somebody like you?
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Because I think that's really important.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: With today's society, you know, we do a lot of stuff online.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: We shop online.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: We do courses online.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: That's kind of how we live, especially when a lot of us don't necessarily live in the same community as the people that we want to aspire to be around.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: So I like that.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I like that you offer– you're going to be doing stuff like that.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: And I do question– like I had the opportunity to kind of read your– the stuff that you had sent me before our show here.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: And I love– one thing that you're going to be coming up with and you're going to be doing.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: You're going to be doing a couple's vision board party.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: And I think this is so cool because I want you to talk about that because I love it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I've been doing vision boards for years now and I have a vision board that, and it's funny because I've left it on my wall for years now and I look and I'm like, oh wow, all these things are happening and it's manifested over the years.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: But I want to talk about the importance of doing a couple's vision board and why you're doing that and how can people that maybe can't attend your workshop or that you're going to be doing,
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: how can they do it at home?
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, no other problem.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So the couples vision board came to me when I was thinking about my next workshop, and I thought I would like to do something with couples.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And the vision board was exactly what I needed.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: So the purpose of the vision board with the couples is that they both work on one board together.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: And what I want them to take away from it is that that they're both in alignment of their relationship.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: They both want the same thing.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And even if one wants a little bit more than the other, this is where their resolution skills come to play.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And then they start collaborating together and compromising as to what they want, what they don't want, and how they can meet in the middle.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: So this is where I come in and help them and encourage them to have that conversation.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: He wants the big red Porsche.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: She wants the SUV.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: We start getting into it.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Why is that important?
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: What is it about the red Porsche that you need?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And what is it about the SUV that you need?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: So they start opening up more and figuring out why they want what they want.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And then they start kind of collaborating and coming up with a solution to meet both needs.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: and oh my goodness Anna
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I think this is you've got you're on a gold mine here because what a fantastic thing because you don't think about that a vision board for me what I've always learned over the years is a very personalized thing that you know my goals my aspirations things that I want to work on but I absolutely love that you think that a couple could do it because it is you know I think about what we're talking I'm thinking about my husband and the things that he likes I'm like okay how would this vision board look if I sat down with my husband and did that because I know that our goals and our dreams are different, but is there a way that we can come together?
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: And then I was thinking, oh my goodness, you could do this with your family, you know, like a family vision board.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: And you can have, okay, what is our family vision board?
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: What do we see as our family for, you know, the coming year, the coming future?
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: What is it we want to accomplish together?
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And wow, what a great thing you're doing, Anna.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: This is fantastic.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's going to be great, and I think that everyone needs that vision with their husband because after the I do's, there's a future that has to be made.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: We've got to make sure it's the future that they both want.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And if they don't, then that's the communication breakdown that happens.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: So for anyone else that's not in Edmonton, so a couple's vision party, I will have it up on my website soon in regards of instruction.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: But in any case, if you're outside, then you're going to grab your materials for vision board and you're going to set a time frame, whether it's three to five years or ten years, And that's exactly how you're going to formulate your vision board, three, five, or ten years.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And if you come into an impasse with your husband or your partner, you sit down and you have a discussion.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Don't be a dream squasher and be open to any possibilities.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And that's That's the formula for a couple of support partners.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love it.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Well, Anna, you're going to have to send us the details on that when you're done.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: I'm going to be posting it on all of our social media because I think it's really important.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And just listening to you, I understand now.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: I would never have thought of that.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Honestly, until you came onto the show today, I never would have thought of, oh, I should do this with my husband or I should do this with my kids or I should do this, you know, even with, I think you could do this within a business.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: You know, what is our vision for our business for the next three, five, ten years?
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Because I've always been such a visual person.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: So when vision boards and everybody started doing that, I thought, oh, I get it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I understand that because I can see that in my head.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: And doing that in groups, that is just a powerful thing, especially if you can kind of like, hey, this is our...
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: What a communication and everything.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: And you've kind of built it all in together, right?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: You're working with your conflict resolution.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: You're doing...
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: And people are seeing, okay, I understand.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Tell me why you want this.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Tell me this.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Tell me that.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And get to know each other.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, you should almost even...
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I like that because, you know, when you're talking about this, I think this is something that people should do exactly before they even get married.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: What are our goals?
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: What are our dreams?
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: What do we want to accomplish in our marriage?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: I wish somebody would have said that, you know, years ago before I got married because that would have made probably in the especially early years of my marriage is, okay, I understand this is who you are.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Maybe I would have been more lenient.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Maybe we wouldn't have had those conflicts arise when they did.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, I just love this.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: This is such a fantastic thing you're doing, Anna.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm so excited for that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, so August 31st in Edmonton, the location is still to be arranged.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: But so end of the month, I'll be presenting that couple's vision board.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And I already have another party happening already.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: So my son wants in.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: My son's like, let's do one for teens.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So my son is 15 years old.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: He's very focused.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: And he wants a teen vision board party.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: So...
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Isn't
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: that great?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I know that our divas are probably listening right now.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: They're like, oh, my goodness, what is she doing?
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And they're getting excited because I get a lot of texts during our shows, and I've already gotten quite a few now, and I think that is just great because I think that's what people are looking.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: They're looking for something a little different.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: It's gotten better.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: So maybe we can talk about some tips and stuff for our listeners today.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: What kind of things can they do to help improve their communications with people around them?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So a lot of people don't know how to ask quality questions.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And I think we're in a world where we always want a deep conversation.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: We're always living on the surface.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And so open up your questions with how, what, where, when, but never why.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Why becomes a very defensive word.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: you're going to try to ask these quality questions using those four words, how, when, where, why, or not why, where, and you're going to just really start to delve deeper, ask more questions, listening, active listening is another thing, and People listen, but don't always listen because their mind is always wondering or if they're checking their phone, they're worried about a phone call they're waiting for.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: So active listening, of course, is just listening to the person, but just reiterating back what they said.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I heard you say that you're going to the zoo tomorrow.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: That way the other person knows you're listening.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: A lot of arguments tend to start when the other person doesn't acknowledge the person's feelings or emotions or conversation.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So you can really just avoid fighting if you acknowledge a person's feelings.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: So if I say, you know, I'm really upset you didn't come to my work today, you'll say, I hear that you're upset that I didn't come to your work today and this was my reason.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: So acknowledging a feeling, just really you get to avoid arguments.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: And as far as communication goes, be open and transparent and try to use I words than opposed to you.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: So I feel like this when you do that instead of you make me feel.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Because no one has that control over you.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: No one makes you feel anything.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: This is the way you're feeling.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And they need to understand that this is how they're feeling or you're feeling.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: But using the I words.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: So you're going to just be very careful with choosing your words.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And like I said, ask more questions.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: If you're not sure, just keep on asking more questions.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: You'll get deeper and deeper once the questions start getting stronger and stronger.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: And then those kind of things take a lot of practice.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So Anna, for those individuals out there, I was going to say, for those individuals out there that don't communicate.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: They kind of seem to clam up.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: We come across people that just as soon as you start talking, all of a sudden they're like, oh, I feel that you're going to do something.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: How do you almost, I shouldn't say this, but how do you break that barrier so that they are going to start communicating with you so they don't just not say anything at all?
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Well, when someone is shut down to communication, you're going to have to ask those questions of what happened to them, right?
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Because everything doesn't pop up wherever.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: This is something that's stemming from an experience they had, right?
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: So working with a therapist and I guess recognizing if they have a social anxiety or not.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So there are a lot of different barriers why a person was shut down, right?
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And it's a work that one has to do within themselves.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: So as a conflict coach, what I do is I help people prepare for hard conversations.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: And when I do that and when I come across a person that is breaking down and cannot communicate, I just ask her a bunch of questions.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: And I have to let her know and she has to give me permission to ask questions that are uncomfortable.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: And And slowly by slowly, figuring out what happened, what was the first initial experience of a bad conversation that led her to be very anxious at this present time, just about asking really good questions and looking and having them role play with me as to what a good conversation looks like.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: I think that's fantastic, and I like that because that is– A wonderful way to work with somebody.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So we're going to talk here.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Anna, one of the things that I like to tell our listeners too is that I want them to be able to get a hold of you.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I know that you do a lot of one-on-one coaching.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: And for any of the people that aren't in Edmonton, will you work with them like over the phone, Skype, things like that?
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: No, I do Zoom and I do offer Zoom and Skype so that I have worked with people outside of Edmonton before.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And that is always available for one-on-one.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Okay,
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: excellent.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's leave your information with our listeners right now.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: How can they get a hold of you if they want to work with you?
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I'm on social media.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: So I'm on Facebook at Empower Advisors, Inc.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And I am at Instagram, Instagram.com, slash forward.com.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Empower, M-P-O-W-E-R, and this is my website, www.empoweredvisors.ca.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Excellent.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And, Anna, is there any last-minute things that you'd like to leave our listeners today?
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that what's the most important part of communication or part of even avoiding just conflict, well, I guess what I'm trying to say is conflict is not a bad thing, and people should start accepting conflict as part of their lives.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Conflict is part of our lives, and it promotes growth and understanding.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And I think that's the most important thing that has to be taken away after a conflict, whether workplace conflict or personal conflict, that there's a lot– that you can take away.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: And if you have that conversation with someone and really be open and just don't guard your feelings too much, you'll be able to preserve that relationship because you will see something in them that you haven't before once you sit down and have that conversation with that person.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: So conflict can be very valuable.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: I love that tip because isn't that so the truth?
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: You know, if we don't if we don't live an experience, if we don't do an experience, we're not going to grow as individuals and we're not going to learn.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: We can't be stagnant in any way.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: So to have those communications and we're always going to learn.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: We're always going to meet new people out there that are not going to agree with what we say at all times and I think to understand and what you're teaching us today is when we can communicate and learn or understand what a person is saying and We also learn about ourselves, and that makes us grow as individuals.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, my goodness, Anna, this was such a great call today.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: I had so much fun.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: I learned so much.
