Latest / Scripture Central / ”Stand Forever” Ep. 4 | The Essential Problem in Life | Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge
Transcript
- 0:00Now listen to this. There's a problem, a big
- 0:03problem. On our own, nothing is enough.
- 0:07The essential problem in life is separation from God, our Father.
- 0:13That is what King Benjamin characterized as our awful
- 0:19situation, and it is awful. As a result, there is a hole in
- 0:24every heart. Many try to fill the void with
- 0:27money, degrees, recognitions, drugs, alcohol.
- 0:31There is a longing, A yearning. Therefore, remember Him to keep
- 0:40his commandments. It's the only intelligent thing
- 0:44to do. The big picture is a big deal.
- 1:03Few things provide greater comfort, confidence, and clarity
- 1:09than looking beyond present cares to see and remember the
- 1:13big picture. Maybe, except for the Holy
- 1:17Spirit, there may be nothing more helpful to brave life's
- 1:21perils than seeing and remembering the big picture, the
- 1:25whole map. We may live life in the weeds,
- 1:30but if we don't see beyond them, we will think life is only weeds
- 1:37when we stand back. The big picture looks like this.
- 1:41There's three parts to it. First part A.
- 1:45The essential problem in life is separation from God our Father.
- 1:51Without God, chaos, darkness, and death prevail.
- 1:57B Jesus Christ bridges the gap if we will believe and follow
- 2:02Him to the end and help others do the same.
- 2:08He is the way offsetting chaos. He is the truth offsetting
- 2:13darkness. He is the life offsetting death.
- 2:18Therefore, see Cross the bridge and close the gap, Believe and
- 2:26follow Christ to the end and help others do the same.
- 2:30That is the big picture and that is the primary framework for
- 2:36this series. I am Larry Corbridge and this is
- 2:41the Stand Forever series. The focus of this particular
- 2:47episode is the first assertion of that three-part that I've
- 2:52just described. That is the essential problem in
- 2:56life. William Wordsworth, one of the
- 3:01great English Romantic poets, is particularly known for this
- 3:05beautiful and insightful verse. He said our birth is but a sleep
- 3:12and a forgetting. The soul that rises with us.
- 3:16Our life * hath had elsewhere its setting and cometh from
- 3:21afar. Not in entire forgetfulness and
- 3:27not in utter nakedness, but trailing clouds of glory do we
- 3:32come from God who is our home. Life did not begin with birth.
- 3:43Before this life, we lived, learned and progressed in the
- 3:47presence of our Heavenly Father. As the sunsets in one hemisphere
- 3:54and dawns in another. The dawning of our birth here
- 3:58was also the setting of a marvelous phase of life in the
- 4:02presence of God our Father, who is again our Father and our
- 4:09home. Never are the limitations of our
- 4:14faculties more evident, and never are words more inadequate
- 4:19than when employed in the attempt to comprehend and
- 4:23describe the expanse, wonder, glory, and grandeur of God's
- 4:28creations and His plan for all of us, for His children.
- 4:36And His greatest creation is you.
- 4:45You are not only created in His image, you are His spiritual
- 4:53offspring. In the Old Testament, Zachariah
- 4:59says that God stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the
- 5:03foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within
- 5:08him. God's first recorded words to
- 5:13Jeremiah were about where he came from before this life,
- 5:17saying, Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee.
- 5:23Before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee, and
- 5:28I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
- 5:35The Almighty God of heaven and earth is the great, great
- 5:39Creator of the cosmos, the universe, and all things in
- 5:43them. He is the Author of salvation,
- 5:46omniscient and omnipotent, but first and foremost, above all
- 5:53things, He is a Parent, a Father, a very good Father, a
- 6:00perfect Father and Eternal Father.
- 6:04He is your Father. You are his child.
- 6:10To speak of a divine spark within you is a huge
- 6:17understatement. As the poet said, you come
- 6:21trailing clouds of glory. You are endowed with astounding
- 6:27intelligence which permeates every cell and molecule of your
- 6:32body, intelligence which surpasseth understanding and yet
- 6:38is undeniable. More than your earthly parents,
- 6:42your heavenly parentage is the essence of who you are.
- 6:48Your earthly parents gave you the marvelous blessing of a body
- 6:52which you you animate, which you inhabit, but without you, your
- 7:00body will die, while you will live on.
- 7:03God is not only your Father, but the source of light, security,
- 7:07knowledge, Lovejoy, peace, wisdom, strength, power, order,
- 7:13purpose, fulfillment, life, and every other good thing.
- 7:18You come from the security of a heavenly home, but now you are
- 7:24away from home, separated from your heavenly Father, not only
- 7:30physically, but spiritually and in character, knowledge and
- 7:34power as well. It is the disparity between who
- 7:40and where God is and who and where we are.
- 7:47That separation, that separation in all of its dimensions, is the
- 7:54essential problem in life. One might say it's the central
- 8:00or critical problem in life, but it is essential in the sense
- 8:05that it is necessary to our development and simply the
- 8:10reality that we have much to learn and do to become like our
- 8:13Heavenly Parents. Like children leaving home to
- 8:19make their way in life, we willingly left the security of
- 8:24our heavenly home and family to make our way here in this life
- 8:29and prepare for the next. Surely Heavenly Father knew and,
- 8:34and we must have known as well, how difficult this life would be
- 8:39and how much would hang in the balance of mortality.
- 8:43How much would hang in the balance of mortality?
- 8:48Heavenly Father knew, and we must have known as well, that we
- 8:51would stumble and fall along the way.
- 8:54And yet we chose to come because God promised a Savior who would
- 9:01help us when we fall so our falling would not be failing.
- 9:13On the website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
- 9:17Saints we find this fairly long description of our pre mortal
- 9:24life under the heading Council in Heaven.
- 9:29Please do not dismiss it even if it seems elementary and
- 9:34familiar. The greatest truths are often
- 9:39time worn and we cannot appreciate why we are here
- 9:44without remembering from whence we came.
- 9:48This is what it says in the pre mortal life.
- 9:53Our Heavenly Father called the Grand Council to present His
- 9:56plan for our progression. We we learned that if we
- 10:02followed His plan, we would become like Him.
- 10:07We would be resurrected. We would have all power in
- 10:11heaven and on earth. We would become Heavenly Parents
- 10:17and have spirit, spirit children just as He does.
- 10:23We learned that He would provide an earth for us where we would
- 10:27prove ourselves, a veil would cover our memories, and we would
- 10:32forget our heavenly home. This would be necessary so we
- 10:37could exercise our agency to choose good or evil without
- 10:41being influenced by the memory of living with our Heavenly
- 10:45Father. He would help us recognize the
- 10:49truth when we heard it again on earth.
- 10:53At the Grand Council, we also learned the purpose for our
- 10:56progression to have a fullness of joy.
- 11:02However, we also learned that some would be deceived, choose
- 11:06other paths, and lose their way. We learned that all of us would
- 11:12have trials in our lives, sickness, disappointment, pain,
- 11:18sorrow, and death, but we understood that these would be
- 11:22given to us for our experience and our good.
- 11:28If we allowed them to. These trials would purify us
- 11:33rather than defeat us. Continuing on at this council,
- 11:39we also learned that because of our weakness, all of us except
- 11:45little children would sin. We learned that a Savior would
- 11:51be provided for us so we could overcome sins and overcome death
- 11:57with resurrection. We learned that if we placed our
- 12:01faith in Him, obeying His Word and following His example, we
- 12:06would be exalted and become like our heavenly Father.
- 12:10We would receive a fullness of joy despite its risks and
- 12:16rigors. You gladly chose to come here.
- 12:21The Lord asked Job. Where was thou when I laid the
- 12:26foundations of the earth? He then said.
- 12:29The morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted
- 12:35for joy, presumably at the prospect of life on earth.
- 12:42Your voice was in that joyful chorus.
- 12:47Speaking of the premortal world, Joseph Smith said God himself,
- 12:52finding he was in the midst of spirits and glory because he was
- 12:56more intelligent, saw proper to institute laws whereby the rest
- 13:01could have a privilege to advance like himself.
- 13:08God's commandments are not meant to restrict or vex, but exalt
- 13:14us. This brings us to something that
- 13:17I call ABC. I call it that because it is yet
- 13:24again another syllogism in Scripture.
- 13:28But not just any Rather, it is a primary, if not the central
- 13:34message God has revealed to His children from the beginning of
- 13:39time. There are two ways to study
- 13:44Scripture close up or from a distance.
- 13:48The close up approach plumbs the depths of a single verse, or a
- 13:54few verses or a single topic. To study at a distance, however,
- 14:00is to stand back and read for broad messages, patterns, and
- 14:07repetitions. The Old Testament, along with
- 14:13the Pearl of great prize, reveals God's earliest
- 14:17communications with His children from the from the beginning of
- 14:21time. One of the primary messages is
- 14:26again what I call ABC. It is seen by studying at a
- 14:32distance. Although ABC is a pervasive
- 14:37pattern throughout the Old Testament, Ioffer it here only
- 14:42in a few examples, really out of hundreds.
- 14:48To see ABC once is to understand it in your head, but to see its
- 14:54pervasiveness is to move it from your head to your heart, and
- 15:00then it makes a difference. It is not just the message that
- 15:05is important, it is also its prevalence.
- 15:10So I'm going to give you a number of examples.
- 15:15I hope it will not be too long of a slog, but here, here are
- 15:20the examples. First example Moses proclaimed
- 15:25know that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God which
- 15:31keepeth covenant and mercy within the that love him and
- 15:36keep his commandments to 1000 generations.
- 15:41Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments and the statutes
- 15:47and the judgments which I command thee this day to do
- 15:51them. Another example.
- 15:53The second example of ABC is a more extensive version of the
- 15:57Lord's admonition to Israel, as found in two chapters of
- 16:02Deuteronomy, chapters 28 and 29. Because it is so long, I will
- 16:08need to abbreviate it here for our purposes.
- 16:13This is what it says. If thou shalt hearken diligently
- 16:17unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and do all his
- 16:21commandments, which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy
- 16:25God will set thee on high above all nations on the earth, and
- 16:30all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee.
- 16:35If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, then
- 16:41the Lord describes a very long list of specific blessings, that
- 16:47which I'm not going to enumerate here.
- 16:50He then adds this warning. But it shall come to pass.
- 16:55If thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God,
- 17:01to observe, to do all His commandments and his statutes,
- 17:04which I command thee this day, that all these curses shall come
- 17:10upon thee and overtake thee, the Lord.
- 17:13That then describes an even longer list of curses, none of
- 17:20which anyone wants to experience.
- 17:23Then after that long list, the Lord then says this.
- 17:28This is the conclusion. Keep, therefore, the words of
- 17:34this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do
- 17:45now, unabbreviated. That is a long passage of
- 17:50Scripture, but it serves to illustrate the lengths to which
- 17:55the Lord has gone to teach it. ABC is one of the primary
- 18:01messages of the Old Testament. Only God can preserve, prosper,
- 18:08prepare, perfect, and bless us is an essential truth threaded
- 18:16throughout the entire fabric of the Old Testament, but never
- 18:19more prominently than in the book of Isaiah.
- 18:24Israel was prone to forget God seeking protection and
- 18:28prosperity through alliances with other nations, instead of
- 18:33trusting in the Almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth
- 18:37and all things therein, in whose hands the destinies of all
- 18:42nations and men reside. God repeatedly said to trust in
- 18:48Him before the arm of flesh. Here are some examples of ABC
- 18:54from Isaiah chapter 1. Come now and let us reason
- 19:02together, sayeth the Lord. Though your sins be as scarlet,
- 19:06they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like Crimson,
- 19:11they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient,
- 19:16ye shall eat the good of the land.
- 19:19Chapter 26. Trust ye in the Lord forever,
- 19:25for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.
- 19:30Chapter 41 And you'll recognize these words from the hymn.
- 19:37How firm a foundation. Fear thou not, for I am with
- 19:43thee. Be not dismayed, for I am thy
- 19:53God. I will strengthen thee.
- 19:58Yeah. I will help thee, yeah.
- 20:03I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness,
- 20:11for I, the Lord thy God, will hold thy right hand, saying unto
- 20:17thee, Fear not, I will help thee.
- 20:23Chapter 43. O Israel, fear not, for I have
- 20:29redeemed thee. I have called thee by thy name.
- 20:33Thou art mine. When thou passeth through the
- 20:38waters I will be with thee, and through the rivers they shall
- 20:43not overflow thee. When thou walkest through the
- 20:48fire, thou shall not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle
- 20:54upon thee. For I am the Lord, thy God, the
- 21:00Holy One of Israel, thy Savior. Fear not prime with thee, I even
- 21:10I. I am the Lord beside me.
- 21:18There is no Savior. I have declared and have saved,
- 21:25and I have showed when there was no strange God among you.
- 21:32Therefore ye are my witnesses, sayeth the Lord, that I am God.
- 21:41Yeah, before the day was I am He, and there is none that can
- 21:47deliver out of my hand. I will work, and who shall let
- 21:52it I even I am he that blotted out thy transgressions for mine
- 22:00own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
- 22:05Chapter 44. I know this is a long list, but
- 22:09stay with me. Thus sayeth the Lord that made
- 22:13thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee.
- 22:18Fear not, O Jacob my servant, for I will pour water upon him
- 22:23that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground.
- 22:28I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine
- 22:35offspring. They shall spring up as among
- 22:39the grass, as willows by the watercourses.
- 22:42Thus sayeth the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the
- 22:46Lord of hosts. I am the 1st, and I am the last.
- 22:52Beside me there is no God. Chapter 46 We're almost done.
- 23:01And even to your old age I am He.
- 23:05And even to your whore hares will I carry you.
- 23:10I have made and I will bear and even I will carry and will
- 23:15deliver you. To whom will you liken me and
- 23:20make me equal and compare me that we may be like.
- 23:25So that's it. Again, those are a few examples
- 23:32out of literally hundreds that we could show, but we don't
- 23:36nearly have that much time. So let's piece together ABC.
- 23:41Now what would a be? What would be the major premise?
- 23:46It begins with Only God can. How would you finish that
- 23:53sentence? Only God can what?
- 23:59Only God can bless you. Only God can cause your heart to
- 24:07beat and give you breath. Only He can preserve and protect
- 24:11you. Only He can give you strength to
- 24:15bear up the burdens of life. Only He can give you power,
- 24:20knowledge, peace, and joy. Only He can forgive your sins.
- 24:25Only He can heal you. Only He can change you and forge
- 24:31a godly soul. Only He can bring you back into
- 24:35His presence. Only He can bless you.
- 24:40That's the major premise. Only God can bless you.
- 24:46So what would the minor premise be?
- 24:48Part B? What would that be?
- 24:51How would you finish this sentence?
- 24:54He will do all of that and more if what?
- 25:00He will do all of that, bless you and more if what?
- 25:05He will do all of that and much more if you remember Him to keep
- 25:11His commandments. What then is the conclusion?
- 25:18Therefore, remember him to keep his commandments.
- 25:25It's the only intelligent thing to do.
- 25:30Now listen to this. It is a monumental mistake to be
- 25:35dismissive of ABC because of its simplicity.
- 25:40Some of the greatest truths are the simplest.
- 25:45Life is not easy, but it's not complicated.
- 25:50It doesn't require a PhD or a great intellect to figure it
- 25:56out. Standing alone, ABC is old news,
- 26:01but that is part of its significance.
- 26:04It is the oldest of the news. From the beginning of time, God
- 26:09has repeatedly invited His children to trust Him.
- 26:16Not instead of everyone and everything else, but above
- 26:20anyone and anything else. Read the Scriptures, especially
- 26:26the Old Testament, with ABC in mind and see how many times it
- 26:31emerges. It is in the account of And here
- 26:36I have to give you a warning. This is another long list, but
- 26:40this is to give you a sense of its prevalence throughout
- 26:45Scripture. But here we're talking about the
- 26:47Old Testament. It is in the account of Cain and
- 26:52Abel, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and
- 26:58Esau, Joseph and his brothers, Moses, Joshua and the children
- 27:05of Israel, Gideon, Samson, Ruth, Hannah, Esther, Eli and his
- 27:10sons, Samuel, David, Solomon, Elijah, King Josiah, King ASA,
- 27:17King Jehoshaphat, King Hezekiah, King Manasseh, King Ammon, Job,
- 27:24Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, the sons of
- 27:31Ephraim, Joel and Jonah. I said it was a long list.
- 27:36It is repeated hundreds of times over, more than the constraints
- 27:43of this small episode will allow in detailed explanation.
- 27:49As I said, to see ABC once is to understand it in your head, but
- 27:55to see its pervasiveness is to move it from your head to your
- 28:01heart, and then it makes a difference.
- 28:05It is not just the message that is important, it is also its
- 28:11prevalence. But there's a problem, a big
- 28:17problem. We don't keep God's commandments
- 28:20all the time. We make mistakes, and when we
- 28:23do, we may withdraw ourselves from the Spirit of the Lord,
- 28:30which is God's presence in this world.
- 28:34And before we know it, we are left unto ourselves, separated
- 28:40from God, His blessings and power.
- 28:43That is what King Benjamin characterized as he said our
- 28:48awful situation, and it is awful.
- 28:55It is the worst of all. It is the essential problem in
- 29:01life. Separation from God and His
- 29:06Spirit is the hardest part of Heavenly Father's plan for His
- 29:11children. As a result, there is a hole in
- 29:16every heart. There is a longing, A yearning,
- 29:27even an emptiness, a sense of something missing, like a faint
- 29:32hum we constantly hear but are not fully aware.
- 29:38For as glorious and beautiful as our world is, we sense we are
- 29:43here temporarily to be fitted for another and better life,
- 29:50Alistair McGrath, a Northern Irish theologian and Anglican
- 29:56priest, observed. Many have found that the awesome
- 30:00sight of the star-studded heavens evokes a sense of
- 30:04wonder, an awareness of transcendence that is charged
- 30:09with spiritual significance. And yet the distant, shimmering
- 30:14stars does not itself create this sense of longing, it merely
- 30:19exposes what is already there, he said.
- 30:24They are catalysts for our spiritual insights, revealing
- 30:30our emptiness and compelling us to ask whether and how this void
- 30:36might be filled. Might our true origins and
- 30:41destiny somehow lie beyond those stars?
- 30:47Might there not be homeland from which we are presently exiled,
- 30:51to which we secretly long to return?
- 30:56Might not our accumulation of discontentment and
- 31:00disillusionment with our present existence be a pointer to
- 31:05another land where our true destiny lies and which is able
- 31:09to make its presence felt now in this haunting way?
- 31:15Suppose that this is not where we are meant to be, but that a
- 31:20better land is at hand. The beauty of the night skies or
- 31:26a glorious sunset are important pointers to the origins and the
- 31:31ultimate fulfillment of our hearts deepest desires.
- 31:36But if we mistake the signpost for what is signposted, we will
- 31:42attach our hopes and longings to lesser goals which cannot
- 31:47finally quench our thirst for meaning.
- 31:52Many try to fill. I guess we all try to fill the
- 31:56void in a lot of different ways. But many try to fill the void
- 32:00with money, degrees, recognitions, titles,
- 32:05possessions, career success, vacations, entertainments,
- 32:10drugs, alcohol, pornography, promiscuity and self indulgence.
- 32:17Much of what we do is touched by a hazy, almost unconscious
- 32:22desire to fill the void and recover the security and warmth
- 32:27we once knew. The best we can do on our own is
- 32:32with friends, family, and selfless service, but even
- 32:36still, it's not enough. Now listen to this.
- 32:42On our own nothing is enough, because the void is separation
- 32:49from God, and only God's presence can feel it again.
- 32:57And in this life, God's presence is his spirit or power, which we
- 33:04do not merit and cannot have on our own.
- 33:09The essential problem in life is separation from God our Father.
- 33:15Without God, chaos, darkness and death prevail.
- 33:21Now, in coming episodes, we will explore in greater depth some of
- 33:25the dimensions of that problem, and then we will turn to the
- 33:30solution. So remember that.
- 33:32I hope you will stay with me on this journey.
- 33:37But again, we're going to talk about chaos, darkness and death.
- 33:41And by nature, they're somewhat unpleasant topics.
- 33:46So again, please stay with me. There is light at the end of the
- 33:51tunnel as we explore in greater depth the problem to understand
- 33:56better the solution. We will get to the solution.
- 34:01So again, I hope you will stay with me on this journey and
- 34:05stand forever.
