- 2:19well now it's time for Crime and Peter Chambers. The original air date August
- 2:24the seventeenth of nineteen fifty four. The title The School Teacher and the Professor
- 2:38Ran and Peter Chambers created by Henry Kane, transcribed and starring as Peter Chambers
- 2:55Dane Kluck. You're a private eye. That's your business. Anything else that's
- 3:07for laughs. You find yourself in a university, but you're not a student.
- 3:23Generally you're allergic to classrooms. But the lady talking to you, a
- 3:27teacher by name Elaine Janis, well, she's a sort of an antidote for
- 3:30the classroom allergy. I need your help, mister Chambers. I need your
- 3:36help desperately. She has large brown eyes and a smooth white forehead, and
- 3:40despite her obvious agitation, she's a sweet young thing. Miss Elaine janis starchy
- 3:46but sweet. I need your help, mister Chambers, not for myself,
- 3:52for another help. That's my racket help, public helper, although sometimes I'm
- 3:58known as Peter Chambers, a private eye. Oh well, there will be
- 4:00a fee, of course, worry about the fee. I'm like a doctor.
- 4:02Depends on what the traffic will there, sooner or later you will get
- 4:06your bill. It's about Professor Stanley Sanders. Papers have been full of it.
- 4:15You austere. Professor Stanley Sanders, suspected of killing his wife and suspected
- 4:20is putting in my life. Not Stanley, not Professor Sanders. He could
- 4:26no more harm any human being than not Stanley. He's the sweetest, kindest
- 4:30person in the whole world. What do you want me to do, miss
- 4:33Jennis. I want you to try to find out who did kill missus Sanders.
- 4:39Well, does the good professor know that you're retaining me? Oh no,
- 4:42no he doesn't, and I don't want him to know. I'll have
- 4:45to talk to him. Well, tell him, tell him that you've been
- 4:47retained, but that your client doesn't wish the name divulged. Just one more
- 4:56little question, Yes, what's your interest in this? It's yours. Well,
- 5:01I have known Professor Sanders for a long time. I think by his
- 5:05silence, in his non cooperation with the police, I think he's been wrongfully
- 5:11suspected. He's a fine person, a good man, a kind man.
- 5:23Professor Stanley Sanders lives in a suburb at the edge of the Bronx. You
- 5:28drive up there and you find a modest, neat little house. Yes,
- 5:31yes, mister Chambers. Professor's a young man, sandy haired and straight eyed.
- 5:39Yes. What is it, please, mister Chambers. Well, I'm
- 5:42not here as a student, Professor Sanders, No, what are you here
- 5:45as an investigator? Investigator? Are you from the police? No, no,
- 5:48no, I'm a private investigator. I've been retained to look into the
- 5:55well the death of your wife. I'm sorry, mister Chambers. I don't
- 5:58know who retained you, and I don't care. I told the police what
- 6:00I know, and that's that. There's nothing further I can add, Professor,
- 6:02now, if you please, I'm a very busy man. And that's
- 6:17how you read about it. In the newspapers stubborn Professor Stanley Sanders, who
- 6:23disclaims any knowledge of the murder of his wife, although he was home at
- 6:26the time. Three children, all of them up in camp. So you
- 6:31go to the Fountain head of Information, Police headquarters, and you're a very
- 6:34good friend, Detective Lieutenant Louis Parker. I am mixed up in a rough
- 6:40one this time, Peter Milan, Louis Louis. What happened there? Exactly
- 6:43what happened? Well, all we got is Professor Stanley Sanders story. All
- 6:47right, what's the story. Well, it's about a week ago. It's
- 6:50a warm night, three kids are off at camp. Professor is alone with
- 6:56his wife at their home in the Bronx. Now he's wearing slacks, and
- 7:00we joy, I'm not interested in history, be interesting? Why must that?
- 7:03Of course, it's got a bearing on the case. All right,
- 7:06okay, all right, okay, Well, about ten minutes before the murder
- 7:12happens, Professor Sanders a scene strolling outside in the slacks and the sweatshirt.
- 7:17Then he goes into the house. The rest is his story? All right,
- 7:20what is his story? The wife was in the kitchen, he went
- 7:25upstairs the bedroom read so according to him, he hears sounds of a scuffle.
- 7:30He runs downstairs, he gets hit, a hard blow on the neck
- 7:34knocks him out. When he comes to his wife is on the kitchen floor,
- 7:39stabbed fifteen times. She's dead. Sweatshirt he was wearing it's gone,
- 7:44missy. So so it's the story, period. Guy himself, the professor
- 7:50absolutely refuses to cooperate any further once he got to cooperate about Oh, now,
- 7:56listen hard, mister peepan, try and think like a drown up detect
- 7:59time listening master. Look, I'm a honess bull. I don't do the
- 8:03glamour routine like you, guys. I was listening, Louis. It's an
- 8:07isolated home on Stotton Island. Wife stabbed to death, nobody home except him
- 8:13and the missus. Kitchen knife, missing, sweatshirt missing right off his body.
- 8:18What are your ideas on that? Well? Onely that the sweatshirt was
- 8:20blood stained, he got rid of it together with the knife. We accuse
- 8:24him. He refuses to talk except to deny the murder. We want him
- 8:28to take a lie to take the test. Refuses absolutely. Now what would
- 8:33you think? Don't ask me, Louis. I'm a glamar boy. You're
- 8:35the Haness bullets you're thinking of console, Well, I think the guy is
- 8:37guiltier than seven devils in Haiti. Why don't you lock him up? Because
- 8:41there's one thing missing and that motive, my boy, motive for murder that
- 8:46we ain't got Joe. So far, all we can do is accuse him
- 8:50and holler and pap us make a big stink about it without motive, wear
- 8:54a hamstrung feet. Yeah, I suppose you are. What else you got
- 8:58low that the newspapers haven't gotten? Oh now, look, come on,
- 9:03it's confidential. It's always confidential. I've been retained on this thing. I'm
- 9:05working. Whatever I dig up, I turned into you, so no less
- 9:09obleeged for that. Come on, all right, take a look search of
- 9:16the house. Disclose these first note type of note. I see them.
- 9:22See look out for yourself. You'll be sorry. And it's signed by initials
- 9:31SS Stanley Sanders. A couple of weeks ago he was out of town.
- 9:35So it figures that he wrote her this nice, sweet little letter. We
- 9:39found it in her handbag. And what's the rest of this stuff? Menus
- 9:43and menus from restaurants nightclubs looks like she was one of them collectives, you
- 9:48know menus Can I see that? Help yourself, detective, and you are
- 9:52detective, don't mention it, Detective. One of the men use sort of
- 10:05tickles at you. It tickles that you fit to bust. It's from the
- 10:11Casino Rouge, a hot shot nightclub over on the East Side. So you
- 10:16take your leave of your beloved Harness Bull. But you're too early for the
- 10:20Casino Rouge, so you try Professor Sanders again. There's absolutely nothing I can
- 10:26tell you, mister Chambers, nothing that I haven't already told the police.
- 10:28What about that note, Professor, that typewritten note that they attribute to you.
- 10:31I didn't write that note. And why don't you submit to a light
- 10:35detective test, because there's no reason to submit to it. I'm not a
- 10:37criminal. I've lived an exemplary life all my life. I have three children
- 10:41whom I adore. I'm not riff raps. Come look, there's no reason
- 10:46to submit to a light detective test. I've told the police exactly what occurred,
- 10:48exactly what happened that night. Well, do you have any explanation for
- 10:52the disappearance of your sweatshirt right off your back. No, what about the
- 10:56kitchen knife, which in this case seems to be the murder weapon. I
- 10:58have no explanation for that, but it's not my province to find explanations.
- 11:03That's the business of the police. Praf. Do you know a lady by
- 11:07name of Elaine Janie? Yes, yes, I know her. She teaches
- 11:15at the university. Look, professor, how did you get along with your
- 11:18wife? Was Misny Chambers? I consider that an impertinent question and one that
- 11:22will end this interview right now. Good day to you, sir, and
- 11:24please don't trouble to come back so that evening. You're an early nightclubber.
- 11:39Casino rouge goes into action late, but you're early. Sebastian slocom owns a
- 11:43joint affectionately known as Sibby to the Joes and the Note. But you're not
- 11:48interested in Sibby, not now. Now. You're interested in a slick chick
- 11:54who goes by the name of Carmen Larrose. She used to be nuts about
- 11:58her boss, and maybe she still is, but anyway you ask around for
- 12:01her. She's a singer at the joint. Have you been looking for me?
- 12:05Hanson? Carmen Lrose, tall, dark and electric plenty of voltage,
- 12:11voltage like a third rail. I hear you've been asking around for me,
- 12:16Pete boy, Yeah, I've been asking around. Tell you something, kiddo,
- 12:20I've been asking around for you. I call your office a couple of
- 12:24times when I got the chance. Who's been stopping you? Nobody? And
- 12:28what do you mean when you got the chance, Sibby. He's been close
- 12:31to me, so close to me, and you hate him for that.
- 12:35I hate him, I hate him. I call you, but you are
- 12:39nothing. I've been working on a case. What's with you and Sibby?
- 12:41I thought you were nuts about that mother? No more. I hate him
- 12:46and I am scared, pretty scared stiff. I don't know if he knows,
- 12:52but I thought I don't know if he knows. I don't know if
- 12:56I know what my little boy, well, how are you doing, Sibby,
- 13:03My little BOYD. I don't like you in my place of business.
- 13:05Snooper me, Sibby out, little boy. I don't like no coppers in
- 13:09my place of business. I'm no copper, Sibby. To me, you're
- 13:13a copper, my little BOYD. Sibby Sebastian Slocum six feet tall, Latin
- 13:26type lover type, sleek, slim and dapper with wild black eyes that look
- 13:31like they need four alarms to put out the blaze. So kindly do me
- 13:35a very small favor, you, Sibby, anytime, get out of my
- 13:39place of cy Get out of here. It's still a free country, Syby
- 13:43country, sure, place of business that ain't free, So get going,
- 13:48Snooper, get out of here. And if I don't, my little boyd
- 13:52then I help you, my jack body. I mean, you're get him
- 13:58out. Have you ever been bounced out of a nightclub? Happens to the
- 14:11best of people, makes you a member of a very select circle. Anyway,
- 14:16you get up and you brushed your clothes, and you have a small
- 14:20debate with yourself. Do you go back and break up the joint or do
- 14:24you keep punching at your business. You have a tough tesla with your alter
- 14:26ego, but business wins out. So once more you go where you aren't
- 14:31wanted, to the home of Professor Sanders. But there you learn that he's
- 14:35been picked up arrested for the murder of his wife. So your high tailor
- 14:39down to headquarters and you're ushering into Park's office and there they are the good
- 14:43Lieutenant, the professor, and what do you know, Elaine, Jennie,
- 14:48Okay, Pete, we get the whole story. We even know that Miss
- 14:52Janice retained you to help our professor. You said you didn't have enough one
- 14:56him, Louis, until you had a motive, which is what we got
- 14:58right now, plenty of motive. Like what like love? Love? M
- 15:03m that's motive for murder. It is when you are in love with the
- 15:05wrong party. I had to tell them, mister Chambers, I had to
- 15:09talk. I couldn't hold it any longer. Holding it back was fool.
- 15:13It was like lying. And they should know everything. They should know the
- 15:18truth, truth, what truth? Dear Professor Sanders, and dear teacher here
- 15:22very much in love. Professor asked his wife for a divorce. His wife
- 15:26refused. Good enough, Detective, do we have a motive? You see,
- 15:30he didn't do it. I'm perfectly confident, and I want you to
- 15:33know everything. But he didn't kill her. I want to talk, Professor.
- 15:37I've told you all I intend to tell you. I'll add that I
- 15:41did ask my wife for a divorce and that she refused, but I didn't
- 15:45kill her. As to that, I've given you all the facts. Now
- 15:48you in love with missus Janesy. I am, and I would like to
- 15:50marry her. But I'm not a murderer. I have three children and it's
- 15:54my intention to try to save them from any possible scandal. Is that why
- 15:58you wouldn't talk? I didn't killer. That's all I have to say,
- 16:00except I should like to call my lord. You don't need a lawyer to
- 16:03answer the simple question. And so it goes deep into the night. They
- 16:15put the grill on Professor Sanders, but he clams tighter than a teenager's evening
- 16:21gone. Finally, when Parker throws his hands up in disgust, you get
- 16:25out of there and where to Casino Rouge. You owe a debt there.
- 16:30Your dignity has been bruised, among other things. But you're late. Carmen
- 16:37la Rose left with Sebastian Slocum. You throw the bartender a couple of tens,
- 16:41and you learn that Carmen lives up at Rye Beach, a little shack
- 16:44up at Rye Beach. It takes you a half hour to get there,
- 16:47and then you're mosey over to a window and you make with the gander.
- 16:53There they are drinking it up, the two of them. The windows locked
- 16:59from inside, but you can hear nothing. Sy, I didn't see nothing.
- 17:07I don't know what you're talking about. You can tell me, honey.
- 17:11I don't care if you're saw I want to know. I don't want
- 17:17you holding out on Sibby. Have a little bell, I have a little
- 17:25belt a city. Ah. You wouldn't hurt me, Sibby. You wouldn't
- 17:30do me no harm, wouldn't eid the hair on your head, my little
- 17:34boy, Oh, come on loosen Did you tell me that night? Yeah?
- 17:44Yeah I did. I was crazy Jealousibby on that phony society day.
- 17:48You were a toy to her, a play thing. You were thinking she
- 17:53would divorce the guy for you. Shut up. Okay, okay, I'm
- 18:00shutting. Don't have no more. I don't want to talk no more.
- 18:06I didn't see nothing. I don't want to talk no more. Don't you
- 18:08worry, my little boy. You ain't gonna talk no more. Dev The
- 18:18guy pulls a knife that looked like it's a foot long. You're going to
- 18:22action. You crush the window, and you are an action tough but he's
- 18:27not tough enough. And when you're finished, he stretched out cool and comfortable,
- 18:34and nobody's going to hear from Sebastian slop him until he gets dialed in.
- 18:41Meanwhile, you've got Carmen Rose on your hands, and I mean on
- 18:45your hand. Hold me, pity, kiss me. I'm afraid, told
- 18:48me, please, he does, girl, what's going on here? Kiss
- 18:53me? Please look calm my little boy. This isn't the time, It's
- 18:56not the place. It is when I am frightened. When when I am
- 19:00frightened, I am like little child. Please kiss me, please please please?
- 19:03Okay m hm and now yes, target, yes, I will once
- 19:15once I love him, I thought I love him. No more, no
- 19:19more. He is like TomKat women. He does not care anyway, this
- 19:25one k this one for once. He is in tankle, a society thing.
- 19:30This professor's wife is so Misssenna. She lead him on, She lead
- 19:34him by the nose. She has one to enjoy, but she does not
- 19:40become entangled. So that silly talks to the white and she laughed in his
- 19:45face. She says she is happy protected as a merit woman. So later
- 19:49on he types note to her from casino rouge office. He thinks, I
- 19:55do not see it, but I see it. I see a threatening no,
- 20:00and she comes in to the club and again she laughed at him.
- 20:03She laughed right in his face. Then last week he goes there. I
- 20:07go after him. She does not know it, but I am tailing him
- 20:11because I want to know. I want to see. The husband is upstairs.
- 20:17I am by the kitchen window. They fight, They argue, and
- 20:21her butchers her. We'll get your knife. The husband comes down the stairs.
- 20:26Sibby wait behind the door, slugs him. He falls near her.
- 20:30There is blood of a shirt that Sibby takes the shirt off and tastes the
- 20:34knife, and he goes the idea why he took the sweatshirt? I imagine
- 20:38to make something that cannot be explained. I imagine to put the suspicion on
- 20:45the housband. I imagine that you imagine pretty good? Ah so now please
- 20:52hold me, please kiss me. I am afraid. Oh so once more,
- 21:07you're at police headquarters. Sebastian Slocum is confined to the calaboose. Common
- 21:12La Rose is held as a material witness, and Professor Sanders free as a
- 21:17lock. Is in Parker's office with Elaine Janis and you you're listening, Professor,
- 21:22I don't get you. I simply don't understand. He is a good,
- 21:26dear, fine man. Yeah, but he almost got him so fried
- 21:30in the hot seat, clamming up like hei. There are all kinds of
- 21:33people lietant. Yeah, they certainly must be scandal, Lieutenant. I shudder
- 21:37at it. I have three children, so you told me over and over
- 21:41and over. Let me give you a little background, Lieutenant. My father
- 21:45was a minister. My mother a devout woman, a social worker. I
- 21:48was brought up very strictly. I am, in essence, an old fashioned
- 21:52man. So you know about slocumbe he came to you to ask for your
- 21:57okay for divorce. Why didn't you tell us scandal again? Lieutenant? Bad
- 22:02enough she was dead. I wasn't going to heap scandal upon scandal, my
- 22:06children, my community, my student. Oh what a guy. He's the
- 22:11dearest, finest, but not taking the line to take the test, holding
- 22:14out on your affection for miss Janice here and holding out in that sebastian slocum
- 22:18thing, and that that note, the typewritten note. Weren't you worried?
- 22:22Man? Not for a moment, Lieutenant. As I said, I am
- 22:26a devout man. I knew that one way or another truth without yeah,
- 22:33truth without thanks to the crazy operations of this crazy private eye. Thank you,
- 22:37Louis. Well then, lieutenant, may we go and peace go with
- 22:41you. Professor, you're quite a guy, by miss Janis. Why now
- 22:52what a man? Yes, sir, there's a certain simplicity as that in
- 22:55integrity. You got a hand into him. I suppose you have to you
- 22:59all right, now, let's get to you. What's sent you off to
- 23:02that casino rouge? Or you did, Louis me? Yeah, you were
- 23:07like, how how did I say? You? Well? Maybe I'm a
- 23:10little bit of a rounder more than you, let's say, but I knew
- 23:12that the casino rouge was owned by Sebastian Slocan So but's it up to do
- 23:17it? That note you showed me here, let me see it again?
- 23:22Hey, yeah, see it's a typewritten note. Mind you a type written
- 23:26note? Now? It reads look out for yourself You'll be sorry, and
- 23:32it's signed by initials s S. That's right, SS Stanley Sanders Professor Stanley
- 23:37Sank also SS for Sebastian slocumbe, which it turned out to be. How
- 23:42the heck did you know that? Psychology? Louis psychology? First, ask
- 23:48any married man in the world, if he drops his wife a note,
- 23:51would he type it? The answer is no, plus and this is even
- 23:55more incontrovertible psychologically. Never mind that husband in the world would sign a note
- 24:02to his wife by both his initialis yay, You've got a point there.
- 24:07My husband would sign by his first name, perhaps even by his first initials.
- 24:10But think, no husband is that formal with his wife both initials.
- 24:15It just didn't figure psychologically. And that plus the menu from casino Rouge plus
- 24:21SS owns Casino rue and it sure tickled me. Louis in the right place.
- 24:26Look, pat, can I say something? Louis, You can say
- 24:30anything, but once, I'd like to go on record with a statement.
- 24:33You know, people make jokes about routine hottest cops like myself and the glamour
- 24:37boys, you guys private eyes, So I'd like to go on record with
- 24:41a state mine. I hit me easy, Louis. I'm not going to
- 24:44hit it all Pete. All I want to say for the record, honest
- 24:48bulu, private Eye, well done, young man, very well done,
- 24:52indeed, And there you've had crime and Peter Chambers Dane Clark was starred as
- 25:14Peter Chambers. Crime and Peter Chambers Transcribed was created and written by Henry Kine.

- 25:33time, same station, or Dane Clark in Crime and Peter Chambers be with
- 26:27us again next week at the same time for another adventure by Peter Chambers.

- 26:38Service. Welcome back, hell you the things that Detective Lieutenant Louis Parker would
- 28:03try to get away with before there were Miranda warnings. I definitely enjoy just
- 28:10the easy chemistry between Danan Clark and Bill Zukert and a nice dialogue here.
- 28:18I do have to say that Crime and Peter Chambers will be coming to an
- 28:22end in four weeks. We'll be bringing you Man from Homicides, So we
- 28:26only have three more weeks of Crime and Peter Chambers left. Oh join us
- 28:30for that for the next three weeks, and then coming in four weeks it
- 28:34will be Man from homicide. All right, Well on to some listener comments
- 28:40and feedback, Hunter sends in just a simple encouraging please keep up the great
- 28:45work. Well, thanks so much, Hunter, And then Carrie had a
- 28:49comment regarding the episode Murder at the Racetrack. He writes, I want to
- 28:57go to that racetrack. With the odds they gave for that three horse race
- 29:03one five forty to one and ninety nine to one, they wouldn't be in
- 29:08business long With three appropriately sized bet you could guarantee bet, you could guarantee
- 29:15yourself a sixteen percent return. Well that is it's unfortunate that that's only a
- 29:25fictional racetrack. The only way I guess it would stay in business if not
- 29:30everyone was as savvy to pick up on it. But generally they can't take
- 29:37those sort of risks. But good catch. They're also a good catch from
- 29:41Heather, who says, when I was listening to this episode, I was
- 29:47sure I had heard it somewhere before. My girls and I brainstormed, and
- 29:51my ten year old remembered that I had seen a similar story on a Martin
- 29:56Kaine episode, and she links to a episode of Martin kin from nineteen fifty
- 30:04one starring Lloyd Nolan and I've seen that episode two, and it does make
- 30:11sense that Crime in Peter Chambers would borrow from Martin Kaine since they were both
- 30:21owned by NBC, and so it would be pretty easy to work things out
- 30:25to reuse applaud idea. And finally, we have a comment from Charles,
- 30:30who writes, congratulations Adam on your fifteen hundredth episode. It has been a
- 30:36real pleasure to spend many nights driving home late listening to your shows. The
- 30:41darkness and the stillness seem to accentuate the drama and suspense of the sometimes dark
- 30:48and gritty realm of the radio detective. Hoping for so many more shows.
- 30:53Well, thanks so much, Charles, appreciate your congratulation and thanks so much
