- 3:06Speaker 2: Michigan has captured its second national title and first under
- 3:13Speaker 2: head coach Dusty May. What a game last night, sixty
- 3:17Speaker 2: nine sixty three win over Yukon. Hey, Yukon needs to
- 3:22Speaker 2: share the hardware, and they did last night. Way to
- 3:28Speaker 2: go Michigan. Kind of a classic fromont Spring roller coaster
- 3:33Speaker 2: forecast today a cold start, gradual warm up, still a
- 3:37Speaker 2: bit unsettled, though, expectempts climbing into the forties. Still not
- 3:41Speaker 2: quite breaking into true spring just yet. If we're lucky,
- 3:47Speaker 2: we'll get into the forties, but maybe upper thirties depending
- 3:50Speaker 2: on where you are. Mostly cloudy, with a chance for
- 3:53Speaker 2: some light snowshowers, flurries. I know it's tough to I'm
- 3:58Speaker 2: seeing flurries right now out on North Main Street here
- 4:01Speaker 2: in Berry. Wednesday tomorrow high's a little bit better, mid forties,
- 4:05Speaker 2: partly sunny. Condition is going to be improving, still cool,
- 4:09Speaker 2: a little bit more spring like, and by Thursday still
- 4:12Speaker 2: mid forties, mixes sun and clouds. I know this is
- 4:17Speaker 2: the time of year where we're just we just were like,
- 4:19Speaker 2: come on, mother nature, just get on with it. We
- 4:23Speaker 2: do have Pat Willis and Shaye Martin who are standing
- 4:28Speaker 2: by and going to be on the couch here in
- 4:31Speaker 2: just a little bit. But first I want to introduce
- 4:34Speaker 2: to you Buddy and Shannon Toundrow, who are my guests
- 4:40Speaker 2: this morning. We're talking about Special Olympics Vermont. We're going
- 4:44Speaker 2: to have some fun this morning. Welcome to both of you.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I'm so glad you're here. I don't know if I've
- 4:50Speaker 2: ever met you before. Shannon, we may have met or
- 4:54Speaker 2: seen each other at the Night to Shine. Tell me
- 4:57Speaker 2: about tell me about out your involvement with Special Olympics,
- 5:04Speaker 2: and I'm gonna we're gonna chat for a little bit
- 5:06Speaker 2: and then I'm gonna have you guys introduce these two
- 5:09Speaker 2: hooligans over here. But how how did you get involved
- 5:14Speaker 2: with this?
- 5:15Speaker 3: Our son, our youngest son, rare combination of on the
- 5:21Speaker 3: spectrum p d D n OS so pervasive development disorder.
- 5:25Speaker 3: He has a brain lesion, okay, and he has a
- 5:28Speaker 3: rare neurologic condition.
- 5:30Speaker 4: So complicated to explain.
- 5:34Speaker 3: It's similar to a mild cerebral palsy okay.
- 5:39Speaker 5: So we have been exploring.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Special Olympics for several years. But he hasn't been ready
- 5:49Speaker 3: until this last year. We he's just developmentally at a
- 5:52Speaker 3: point where his anticipatory anxiety did not overrule him. We
- 5:57Speaker 3: were able to enter him. Pat's nephew actually is in
- 6:03Speaker 3: class with our son, and.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think that got the ball rolling.
- 6:09Speaker 5: It did it did?
- 6:11Speaker 3: We moved to Eastbury two and we happened to meet
- 6:19Speaker 3: over winter break.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Upon moving, before he.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Started barry Town, we happened to meet Pat's nephew who
- 6:26Speaker 3: happened to be in the same grade and able bodied,
- 6:29Speaker 3: typical you know, Josh kidd athlete, very very good kid,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and he has been protective of our son since he's
- 6:39Speaker 3: been very.
- 6:42Speaker 5: He looks out for him.
- 6:43Speaker 3: He understands his deficiencies, and he understands how vulnerable he is,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and he protects him.
- 6:51Speaker 2: What's your your your son's name? And how well known
- 6:54Speaker 2: is he in our community?
- 6:55Speaker 5: Wedsel Town? Trow is his name?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Pretty cool name?
- 7:01Speaker 6: Thank you?
- 7:03Speaker 2: So really he is?
- 7:05Speaker 6: Yeah, so we don't have a fifth. Wetzel is not
- 7:08Speaker 6: the fifth, but.
- 7:09Speaker 5: We Aldridge Library.
- 7:11Speaker 3: He's well known at He's a big reader book Valori's Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 3: he's he's Wetzel is actually almost a black belt. He
- 7:23Speaker 3: is on the last stage before black belt.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Love this.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So, yeah, Freddie has had to do some accommodations to
- 7:30Speaker 3: help his motor skills.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Yeah, but he's thrived.
- 7:33Speaker 3: It's actually we call it bonus occupational therapy. Fifteen In February,
- 7:38Speaker 3: he was.
- 7:39Speaker 6: So we moved. We moved to Barry and within days
- 7:44Speaker 6: Wedsel came home from school and he had four five,
- 7:50Speaker 6: four or five friends. He'd been going to more Town
- 7:54Speaker 6: for six years at that point and had maybe one
- 8:00Speaker 6: child at school he could name. So the transition to
- 8:05Speaker 6: a bigger school mind blowing for him.
- 8:08Speaker 5: I mean it just he's flourished.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:11Speaker 6: Yeah, he went from hoarding up in his room reading
- 8:15Speaker 6: books to martial arts.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Interesting. You never really know. Sometimes it's it's the reverse
- 8:22Speaker 2: of this.
- 8:22Speaker 6: And he just got invited to play in Dallas on
- 8:28Speaker 6: a national level tournament sled hockey.
- 8:32Speaker 5: We play for Central Pioneers as well.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Do we do with John sell or with with Bud.
- 8:40Speaker 2: He's he's badass. Love that guy. He's here absolutely so much. John,
- 8:47Speaker 2: John and Wendy. I mean it's just there's no more.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Devotion than what they have. There is none better people.
- 8:56Speaker 5: They are amazing totally.
- 8:59Speaker 2: They been on the air here. It was a long
- 9:01Speaker 2: time ago that I had Christian and John on the air. Uh,
- 9:06Speaker 2: just wonderful people, many solid.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And Dan, I'm not sure if you know Dan, if
- 9:13Speaker 3: you've ever met Dan, Dan helps It is Wendy's sister.
- 9:18Speaker 5: He's married to Wendy's sister. Yeah, and Dan and.
- 9:21Speaker 2: John doesn't get that. Doesn't lace up the skates and
- 9:23Speaker 2: get out there. Though.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Now he's the photographer. He's the photographer forever.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Just keep him where he belongs, behind the lens, behind
- 9:35Speaker 2: the lens.
- 9:35Speaker 3: He thrives there and everywhere. You'll see him at Norwich,
- 9:38Speaker 3: you'll see everywhere. I mean, they are well, they just
- 9:41Speaker 3: did Easter. They I mean the community with Christian all
- 9:46Speaker 3: the time, and the community is very accepting. I will
- 9:49Speaker 3: say they've they've really developed. The community in general has
- 9:52Speaker 3: developed more than they than.
- 9:54Speaker 5: They used to.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So we we have we have some big things coming up.
- 9:59Speaker 2: April eighth is tomorrow, April eighteenth, eighteenth, I'm sorry, eighteenth
- 10:07Speaker 2: would be.
- 10:08Speaker 6: The Norwich what is it Special Olympics basketball tournament.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Tell me about this.
- 10:15Speaker 5: So our special Olympians.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Huh, well, we play for Capital Region, so these these
- 10:20Speaker 3: Olympians are Capital Region. There's two teams here in CenTra Vermont,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but Capital Region is our team and it'll be I
- 10:27Speaker 3: don't know how many teams are coming. I think Shay
- 10:29Speaker 3: and Pat can answer that when they come up. How
- 10:32Speaker 3: many teams will be playing at that event, which will
- 10:36Speaker 3: be hosted at Norwich, which is a big deal because
- 10:39Speaker 3: that's a great court.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Of course it is.
- 10:41Speaker 4: That's like a great venue.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So it starts at nine in the morning, it does
- 10:48Speaker 2: till one in the afternoon.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Yes, all right, what is it?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Is there a ticket to get in?
- 10:56Speaker 3: No, it's just you enter, You just come and watch.
- 10:59Speaker 3: It's free to the public to come in.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I'm hoping somebody is going to be collecting donations here.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Always nice, I mean we have the main second fundraiser.
- 11:11Speaker 3: It would always be nice if people could donate financially
- 11:14Speaker 3: or physical items for the silent auction or still plenty
- 11:17Speaker 3: of time just to show up and cheer on the
- 11:19Speaker 3: Olympians as they're showcasing their talents.
- 11:23Speaker 2: This is a really, really, really big deal. It's huge
- 11:26Speaker 2: when they get out on this court. It's uh, it's
- 11:31Speaker 2: it's more than just game time.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yeah, the passion.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You can't hide the love of it, you can't hide
- 11:39Speaker 3: the collaboration.
- 11:40Speaker 4: You can't hide.
- 11:41Speaker 3: They genuinely are our team players. They just instinctually they're helpful,
- 11:46Speaker 3: they're kind.
- 11:49Speaker 6: So I was saying earlier, I helped coach a little
- 11:53Speaker 6: bit when needed. I coached years ago and middle school level.
- 12:03Speaker 6: These guys are. They're just the most fun I've ever
- 12:06Speaker 6: had coaching. Really, none stop laughing, smiling. It doesn't matter
- 12:11Speaker 6: what they do out here. It's it's just it's fun.
- 12:16Speaker 6: And I told the head coach the other day, so
- 12:19Speaker 6: I would do this every day, every day. It's just
- 12:23Speaker 6: so much fun doing it for.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Me fifteen years.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Jason's been the coach for this basketball team for fifteen
- 12:30Speaker 3: years and he's passionate.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Yeah, he loves it.
- 12:33Speaker 3: He keeps coming back. It's it's rewarding, it's fun. These
- 12:37Speaker 3: are the most coachable humans you'll ever meet, and he
- 12:40Speaker 3: needs it so much fun. I mean, they really they are.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's the best team ever. It really is. Just to
- 12:48Speaker 3: put this group together, it's and I believe, unbelievable, like
- 12:52Speaker 3: the talent and the passion and the skill. It really
- 12:56Speaker 3: and they all grow from the beginning to the end.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You watch them pick up and learn. I mean, they
- 13:01Speaker 3: really are coachable. They want to learn, They weren't to
- 13:04Speaker 3: each other. They very much each other.
- 13:07Speaker 2: April eighteenth at Norwich starts at nine in the morning,
- 13:11Speaker 2: goes to one in the afternoon. Yes, trying to get
- 13:14Speaker 2: as many people.
- 13:16Speaker 6: We're going to share it as much as we can. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 6: and hopefully people here free.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So I'm gonna I'm going to share the crap out
- 13:23Speaker 2: of it too. Yeah, it's it's free. Just come out, man,
- 13:27Speaker 2: and and you know, and cheer these these guys on well.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Meet the Olympians.
- 13:32Speaker 7: They love.
- 13:32Speaker 3: These athletes love sure, engaging with the community absolutely, and
- 13:37Speaker 3: they're great at it.
- 13:38Speaker 6: It's competition, but it's it's fun.
- 13:42Speaker 2: It's just and and and you know what I'm gonna
- 13:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna try really hard to make it. One of
- 13:51Speaker 2: the things I'm going to do if I can make
- 13:55Speaker 2: it is and and I encourage others to do the
- 13:58Speaker 2: same thing. Before you leave the house, grab a sharpie
- 14:03Speaker 2: and grab something that can be autographed, whether it's a
- 14:06Speaker 2: ball cap or or a T shirt or any anything
- 14:10Speaker 2: even just a piece of paper and bring that with
- 14:12Speaker 2: you and get some autographs from these Olympics.
- 14:15Speaker 6: I know one of the guys that will be speaking next, Shaye,
- 14:19Speaker 6: loves to autograph yeah, anything he can.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh yeah, these guys are rock stars. Absolutely, they're
- 14:28Speaker 2: doing uh, they're doing great work. And y'all are kind
- 14:31Speaker 2: of like a big family. Y'all get along really really well.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I have to say that we say it often that
- 14:41Speaker 3: our son has found his tribe.
- 14:44Speaker 6: You found his people.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Yeah, it's different when you have a different
- 14:50Speaker 3: ability child. It's different involving them. Yeah, Unfortunately it is
- 14:58Speaker 3: two worlds. You don't want it to be.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you would hope that if someone's listening to this
- 15:06Speaker 2: episode and they have someone in their life that he
- 15:12Speaker 2: is has developmental uh challenges and they're not connected in
- 15:20Speaker 2: with Special Olympics and you guys all as a family,
- 15:28Speaker 2: what do they do? How do they break that barrier? What?
- 15:32Speaker 2: What should they do? How do they come out? Meet
- 15:34Speaker 2: you guys, socialize, get together, show up, come to the game.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Begin there absolutely and there's plenty of moot.
- 15:43Speaker 6: You can you know, look online Special Olympics Vermont. They'll
- 15:48Speaker 6: tell you all the chapters throughout the state and it's
- 15:55Speaker 6: really welcoming.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, tell me about the mutwa again that you you
- 15:59Speaker 2: may that earlier. There's there's a fundraiser.
- 16:02Speaker 6: May second, and I think Patrick would be able to
- 16:06Speaker 6: maybe give a little more. He's more involved directly with it.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yes, it's it's not just basketball, it's soccer, it's skiing,
- 16:15Speaker 2: it's track and field, and these competitions take place statewide.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Correct generally kind of spread out through the year, depending
- 16:26Speaker 2: on what the what the sport is. But the track
- 16:28Speaker 2: and field stuff is massive.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yes, that was yes St Albans, that's the largest event
- 16:34Speaker 3: for that, the Albans. Yes, that's the following and the
- 16:38Speaker 3: track and field I believe takes most of the Olympians
- 16:43Speaker 3: there were I mean, you have soccer, like we played softball,
- 16:47Speaker 3: so we had to play on the lower field.
- 16:48Speaker 5: We had to actually leave BFA, you know.
- 16:52Speaker 3: The the Pearly Collins that's where the event happened. We
- 16:55Speaker 3: had to go down into Saint Albans City for our
- 16:59Speaker 3: softball itself and then come back up to where the
- 17:02Speaker 3: track field is. But the track is very very large.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Soccer is rather large as well.
- 17:09Speaker 2: So there's unified sports, but there's we should mention here
- 17:14Speaker 2: that there's a good number of athletes that are involved
- 17:18Speaker 2: with this special Olympics who technically really don't have any
- 17:23Speaker 2: I hate to use the word but disabilities. I mean
- 17:26Speaker 2: they're out there Bland win.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Oh yes, oh yes, they're highly competitive and highly skilled
- 17:35Speaker 3: very much.
- 17:35Speaker 5: They have a lot.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Of amazing talents, I mean it, and they showcase them.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I mean they absolutely highlight them during these events, during
- 17:44Speaker 3: the practice, during the games. But and they come from
- 17:47Speaker 3: all over. I mean, there's greatest all of them are.
- 17:51Speaker 2: This is so much more than physical fitness. This is
- 17:58Speaker 2: so much more than competition, so much more than the sport.
- 18:02Speaker 2: What the game is, what you're doing, what you're playing.
- 18:05Speaker 2: This is about building self confidence. This is about being
- 18:11Speaker 2: included in your community, being accepted and inclusivity.
- 18:16Speaker 5: It matters huge and social connection.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Social connections.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Know each other, I mean they know each other from
- 18:24Speaker 3: all these other teams. When the Randolph team, you know,
- 18:27Speaker 3: they all know each other. You go to all these
- 18:29Speaker 3: teams and it's familiar faces. And like when Knight to Shine,
- 18:33Speaker 3: many of the people that you probably saw at Knight
- 18:35Speaker 3: to Shine play sports and they're from different regions, yet
- 18:39Speaker 3: they all know each other.
- 18:40Speaker 5: There's the overlap.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And and then there's the self advocacy groups, which these
- 18:44Speaker 3: guys can talk about when when they come up that
- 18:46Speaker 3: there's other ways that they connect.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It's not just special Olympics.
- 18:52Speaker 3: There are other events that they do or gatherings that
- 18:57Speaker 3: they have. You know, there there really is an all
- 19:00Speaker 3: inclusive environments. So they can support each other. If they
- 19:05Speaker 3: have questions, if they have needs, they can help each other.
- 19:08Speaker 3: You know that they lean on each other or build
- 19:11Speaker 3: a group. If there isn't if there's several people that
- 19:14Speaker 3: are struggling to hey, how do I navigate the workplace?
- 19:16Speaker 3: Who do I talk to? They can do that amongst themselves.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Vast majority hold jobs. The vast majority of these Special
- 19:27Speaker 3: Olympians are working jobs, most full time jobs, if not
- 19:31Speaker 3: part time at least. But they're in the community in
- 19:34Speaker 3: all different ways.
- 19:37Speaker 4: It's huge.
- 19:38Speaker 3: You know, so a lot of the community members may
- 19:40Speaker 3: recognize one or two, but they may not realize how
- 19:43Speaker 3: tied some of these people are to other events and
- 19:46Speaker 3: other places.
- 19:49Speaker 2: What a gift all this is is. It's so beautiful
- 19:55Speaker 2: to hear this. It really is.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Our son. Our son went from not completely a shut in,
- 20:02Speaker 6: but of a lack of confidence to you know, at
- 20:09Speaker 6: a Mountaineers game and these guys were practicing on the
- 20:13Speaker 6: little league field, you know, they were playing softball, practicing,
- 20:16Speaker 6: and he came back and it was that day that
- 20:20Speaker 6: we finally got into Special Olympics. He had been watching
- 20:23Speaker 6: for weeks, then practice, and then finally he was I
- 20:28Speaker 6: want to try.
- 20:29Speaker 3: But he struggles still with a lot of it's all
- 20:32Speaker 3: new to him. It's overwhelming, and these guys meant for him.
- 20:35Speaker 2: These guys grabbed him and him he worked about the eighteenth.
- 20:40Speaker 3: I don't think so he hasn't shown. But he doesn't
- 20:44Speaker 3: look that far ahead either.
- 20:45Speaker 5: That's part of his.
- 20:47Speaker 6: But he doesn't have to. He doesn't have to. He's
- 20:51Speaker 6: got these guys.
- 20:52Speaker 3: He knows who he's going with now, that's his family.
- 20:54Speaker 3: So he's coming.
- 20:55Speaker 6: We get we get out of the car and he
- 20:58Speaker 6: walks and as soon as he sees any these guys,
- 21:00Speaker 6: it's yeah, Mom and dad don't exist, wouldn't want to
- 21:05Speaker 6: be for fifteen years.
- 21:07Speaker 5: That has been our goal with that independence.
- 21:09Speaker 8: And I'm happy.
- 21:10Speaker 6: And he has it.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so wonderful.
- 21:13Speaker 4: He's confident with it.
- 21:14Speaker 3: But and and the caregivers as well. He's familiar with
- 21:18Speaker 3: them because it's the same consistent faces every week, every
- 21:23Speaker 3: time we interact.
- 21:24Speaker 5: It's it really becomes your family.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It becomes your family pretty quickly when you're in a
- 21:30Speaker 3: place where you know that people understand you.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're not picking you apart.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Did you guys take a little uh ice bath in
- 21:38Speaker 2: Lake Champlain a couple of weeks.
- 21:39Speaker 6: Now I'm gonna Wedgel wants to. We were too late
- 21:43Speaker 6: to try it.
- 21:44Speaker 2: This year, the penguin plunch.
- 21:45Speaker 6: We're gonna do it maybe next year.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I think, call me, call you, call me.
- 21:53Speaker 6: You hear me as soon as I hit that water'll.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Hear you'll hear me too. But let's let's connect because
- 22:02Speaker 2: I'll go with you guys. I'll be in the water. Yes,
- 22:06Speaker 2: of course I will. Yes, definitely a video.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I did it years ago and I'm not
- 22:13Speaker 5: doing it.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I would love to do it.
- 22:15Speaker 5: It's great wantcause.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Of course you go.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Let's let's do it and get you in here and
- 22:22Speaker 2: sit and we'll hammer away at it and see if
- 22:24Speaker 2: we can get some some good funds going.
- 22:27Speaker 6: We'll do it.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I would love to do it.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll recruit the whole Special Olympics.
- 22:32Speaker 7: All right.
- 22:33Speaker 2: So I've got about a year to think about what
- 22:36Speaker 2: it is that I'm going to be wearing that day
- 22:38Speaker 2: when when I go in the water. The speed, Oh
- 22:42Speaker 2: you know, I got to figure this out. Maybe not
- 22:44Speaker 2: a speedy for me.
- 22:46Speaker 6: But you do whatever you gotta do.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I'm going to if I can. It's allowed Special Olympics
- 22:54Speaker 2: for a couple of extra bucks, I'll do it. I
- 22:56Speaker 2: don't give it, damn for.
- 22:58Speaker 6: The right, for the right, don't. I'll hold your hand
- 23:01Speaker 6: while we're doing.
- 23:02Speaker 2: All right, let's let's get these these two guys up here.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Any anything else though that you want to say this morning.
- 23:08Speaker 3: No, I think that these two are capable of covering
- 23:12Speaker 3: everything anything that you have to ask.
- 23:15Speaker 6: Yeah, our questions, our questions are usually answered by these guys.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Anyways, what a pleasure it's been to to make.
- 23:22Speaker 7: I appreciate it.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Yeah, let's take it out there. Yeah, let's and let's
- 23:26Speaker 2: get you back in. Welcome in here anytime. I appreciate it, Mike.
- 23:30Speaker 2: These mics are your mics, so come on.
- 23:32Speaker 5: I appreciate it.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, let's get these two guys in here.
- 23:35Speaker 2: And you know, the Special Olympics has been around since
- 23:41Speaker 2: nineteen seventy one, amazing, it was one years old and
- 23:49Speaker 2: it is free for athletes and funded by donations and fundraising.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Events like the Penguin Plunge just one of several that
- 24:01Speaker 2: go on throughout the state. But there's a strong partnership
- 24:06Speaker 2: with area schools. Colleges like Norwich is just one of many.
- 24:14Speaker 2: But again, the eighteenth at Norwich from nine to one
- 24:19Speaker 2: is the basketball tournament, and then June sixth over at
- 24:24Speaker 2: Saint Mike's is going to be another one and it's
- 24:28Speaker 2: it's just going to be fantastic. Pat just pull that
- 24:34Speaker 2: mic a little closer to you, buddy. So yeah, man, listen,
- 24:37Speaker 2: here you go. Tell me about what's happening over at
- 24:39Speaker 2: the MUTOI On May tewid.
- 24:42Speaker 9: So, my mom and my girlfriend they're doing a fundraiser
- 24:47Speaker 9: at the Mutual for Special Olympics.
- 24:51Speaker 8: It's it's like a good cause.
- 24:53Speaker 9: You know, we're trying to get new uniforms and all that.
- 24:58Speaker 9: We tried tried at the first time and it was
- 25:01Speaker 9: a bus but we're gonna keep on hugging at it
- 25:05Speaker 9: and keep on trying.
- 25:07Speaker 2: What are they going to do over there on May second?
- 25:09Speaker 2: Like a dinner and a dance or like calcula.
- 25:13Speaker 9: It's it's based on a potluck dinner. Buddy is going
- 25:20Speaker 9: to run the grill, and I'm gonna help Buddy run
- 25:22Speaker 9: the grill.
- 25:23Speaker 8: We're gonna have.
- 25:26Speaker 9: Gift cards to donations we're going to auction off.
- 25:32Speaker 8: Pretty much.
- 25:33Speaker 9: I think they're ten dollars or twenty dollars or something.
- 25:37Speaker 9: I'm not sure about the pricing right now because my
- 25:40Speaker 9: mom and is still working on it.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It's would you have I'm gonna get in touch with
- 25:46Speaker 2: your mom. Yeah, so I can get some more details
- 25:48Speaker 2: on this. I want to promote the crap out of it.
- 25:50Speaker 2: May seconds coming up fast, Yes, so let's do that.
- 25:54Speaker 2: That sounds like a great time. Do you know what
- 25:55Speaker 2: time is it in the evening?
- 25:57Speaker 7: It's ten to four.
- 25:59Speaker 2: It's ten to four, all right, so lunch lunchtime? Perfect? Yes,
- 26:05Speaker 2: all right, awesome. That that tells me a lot. I'm
- 26:10Speaker 2: already thinking about my schedule that day, which is.
- 26:12Speaker 8: So I will touch base with you after and.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You know, yeah, so the eighteenth at Norwich, what are
- 26:24Speaker 2: you guys going to be doing that day?
- 26:25Speaker 7: Well, we're gonna be playing basketball. That is my hometown.
- 26:29Speaker 7: I'm going What I'm going to be doing is we're
- 26:32Speaker 7: trying to recruit all the players from like Norwig's teams
- 26:34Speaker 7: to come out and watch us. Because I go out
- 26:37Speaker 7: to all the sports, so I go to the basketroom, like,
- 26:40Speaker 7: would you like to come watch us?
- 26:41Speaker 2: Like heck, yeah, yeah, are you pretty good?
- 26:44Speaker 7: Shack? Yes, I'm I'm a captain of our team. And
- 26:48Speaker 7: eventually I'm going to stop playing to be a coach.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So you can you can move pretty fast? Yeah yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 2: damn is he is? He a pretty good path?
- 26:59Speaker 8: He is, He's really good.
- 27:01Speaker 2: What are you going to be doing?
- 27:02Speaker 8: I'm actually going to be coaching.
- 27:06Speaker 9: Health reasons is they stopped me from playing. I've been
- 27:10Speaker 9: playing since I was a young kid. I decided I
- 27:15Speaker 9: wanted to stop playing, and I want the younger, the
- 27:18Speaker 9: younger kids come up and get the better show, get
- 27:22Speaker 9: the feeling of the sport. I wanted to get the
- 27:27Speaker 9: feeling of a coaching position because that's my dream goal,
- 27:31Speaker 9: to be a coach. Jason is the best coach ever.
- 27:37Speaker 9: He actually is putting me under his wing as a coach.
- 27:41Speaker 2: What's his name?
- 27:44Speaker 9: Yea cup of Blanca. So he's he's he's the best.
- 27:50Speaker 9: He started coaching me when I was in high school.
- 27:55Speaker 9: He took Neil rosenblood spot from coaching us. And I
- 28:03Speaker 9: met Shay when I was moving. He was in high school,
- 28:10Speaker 9: and so we all got together like a big happy family. Sure,
- 28:14Speaker 9: and then we'sell comes we were talking about we'sel. We
- 28:19Speaker 9: wanted Wessel to get get the use of the feeling
- 28:22Speaker 9: sure of being with a big group, and I went.
- 28:27Speaker 9: I talked to Wetzel's mom over the phone.
- 28:30Speaker 8: Hey, give what's maybe.
- 28:32Speaker 9: Wessel wants to try softball? Yeah, and she's like, sure,
- 28:36Speaker 9: let's try it. So here comes what's coming wrong? What'ssell
- 28:40Speaker 9: has been with us ever since?
- 28:41Speaker 7: We mentor him too. Ye if he needs help, we
- 28:44Speaker 7: go and help him.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Okay, this is so badass. I love hearing this. I mean,
- 28:49Speaker 2: this is like so refreshing.
- 28:51Speaker 7: So I have another story I did, please tell. So
- 28:54Speaker 7: We're at one tournament and this girl fell with the ball.
- 28:57Speaker 7: I could just took it down the court and ran
- 29:00Speaker 7: like a like a person I am, But I just said, no,
- 29:03Speaker 7: have the ball back, go and score, because I have
- 29:05Speaker 7: more respect for scoring, and then for me scoring, and
- 29:09Speaker 7: then for the other team. So I said, go go
- 29:12Speaker 7: for it. I got respect the whole entire day.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yep, big life lessons here and then and you know
- 29:20Speaker 2: what a lot of parents, a lot of adults have
- 29:23Speaker 2: not figured that out. Shay, I'm serious, I know. And
- 29:28Speaker 2: then literally and figuratively everything When.
- 29:32Speaker 9: I was in high school, the special Olympics actually picked
- 29:36Speaker 9: me as the Athlete of the Year because I let
- 29:43Speaker 9: the kids score with the needs score. I let them
- 29:50Speaker 9: score on me. If I get the rebound, I hand
- 29:52Speaker 9: it right back to them and there you go.
- 29:54Speaker 7: So if we're ahead by a lot, we stopped, we stopped.
- 29:57Speaker 7: We stopped with them. Shoot they missed, we give it
- 29:59Speaker 7: back until they score because we don't want to beat
- 30:01Speaker 7: them by a whole lot. We want to be competitive.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Wow.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Wow, we're getting shout out from Stacy Holden, who wants
- 30:08Speaker 2: to say hi to to all you guys. He's he's
- 30:12Speaker 2: down in North Florida, Hi, on the beach right now,
- 30:19Speaker 2: sun tanning. That's what he does for a living. That's
- 30:22Speaker 2: what he does for a living, I know. But he
- 30:27Speaker 2: he also wants to know specifically how he can donate.
- 30:32Speaker 2: So we'll get some we'll get some information and we're
- 30:37Speaker 2: going to get that on the air here before we
- 30:40Speaker 2: scoot this morning, all right, because we want to make
- 30:42Speaker 2: sure that that's put out there. I love the stories
- 30:45Speaker 2: that you guys are telling.
- 30:47Speaker 8: This is I even jumped in the lake Champlain.
- 30:50Speaker 7: I do do. So we're gonna be so next year
- 30:52Speaker 7: we're doing it with you.
- 30:53Speaker 8: Yeah, we're gonna go with you.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Have you done it before?
- 30:56Speaker 1: I have?
- 30:56Speaker 8: I did it four years.
- 30:58Speaker 7: I think I've been like five years, So.
- 31:00Speaker 8: Okay, four or five.
- 31:01Speaker 2: So you're used to it.
- 31:02Speaker 7: Yep.
- 31:04Speaker 2: You know there's multiple things here. There's there's when you
- 31:08Speaker 2: jump in like Champlaine, you're raising money for the Special Olympics,
- 31:14Speaker 2: but you're also helping in any inflammation that you have
- 31:19Speaker 2: in your body.
- 31:22Speaker 8: And they don't don't back out.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I have a lot of inflammation, and uh, I think
- 31:30Speaker 2: it was you know, I put an ice pack on
- 31:32Speaker 2: my shoulder every night. You know, I would love to
- 31:35Speaker 2: get in Champlain with you guys and do a little
- 31:38Speaker 2: ice bath. They may have to pull us out.
- 31:41Speaker 7: Oh no, the well that way mean I've done so
- 31:43Speaker 7: many times. I love it.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Yeah, do you stay you try to stay in for
- 31:46Speaker 2: a little while.
- 31:47Speaker 8: No, no, you don't let us there you go.
- 31:50Speaker 7: I go in and get right back out.
- 31:51Speaker 8: They won't let us.
- 31:52Speaker 2: All right. What's going on with the Mountaineers.
- 31:56Speaker 9: So my mom went to Brian Gallagher and asked if
- 32:03Speaker 9: he can donated some game tickets for the Mountaineers and
- 32:07Speaker 9: he said sure, So he donated fifteen game tickets.
- 32:11Speaker 8: To auction off.
- 32:12Speaker 9: Wow and so on July eighth, for whoever is part
- 32:17Speaker 9: of the Special Olympics, it's a Special.
- 32:21Speaker 8: Olympic Night, conclusion or conclusion night.
- 32:25Speaker 9: The athletes of Special Olympics can go on the field
- 32:30Speaker 9: before the pre game, before the game to do the
- 32:33Speaker 9: national anthem and all that stuff.
- 32:35Speaker 7: Yeah, when the team's getting announced, when the team's getting
- 32:41Speaker 7: announced with the names, you go. You run with the
- 32:44Speaker 7: team into their spot and then you stand there for
- 32:47Speaker 7: their anthem. Then you run back out and then you
- 32:50Speaker 7: can join the game. Yep, joined the game half fin
- 32:52Speaker 7: and you don't even have to pay to get into
- 32:54Speaker 7: the game. If you're a Special Olympics athlete.
- 32:55Speaker 2: I'm going to do everything I can to be there
- 32:57Speaker 2: July eighth. It's going on my calendar. It's fantastic.
- 33:01Speaker 7: Brian.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Brian is such a great guy. He's going to be
- 33:04Speaker 2: on the air with me. He's going to be sitting
- 33:05Speaker 2: on that couch in two weeks I think something like that,
- 33:10Speaker 2: twenty six something somewhere around there. He's going to be
- 33:13Speaker 2: in here really soon. I'm not sure if he's going
- 33:15Speaker 2: to be bringing a player with him or not. I'm
- 33:18Speaker 2: not sure if he's going to be bringing skip with him.
- 33:20Speaker 2: I don't know, but he'll be here and he comes
- 33:24Speaker 2: in at least once a year. And I just love
- 33:28Speaker 2: the Mountaineers. I have fallen in love with that team.
- 33:31Speaker 2: They're so great and they do they do a lot
- 33:34Speaker 2: more than playing baseball.
- 33:35Speaker 7: They go out in the community, they go on the parade.
- 33:41Speaker 9: So we're actually working on getting donations to the Vermont
- 33:47Speaker 9: Lake Monsters.
- 33:49Speaker 8: That's still in the work.
- 33:52Speaker 7: Yes, so all right, we did it one time and.
- 33:55Speaker 9: We got we did the fifty to fifty there, so
- 34:03Speaker 9: but we're still we're still working on it.
- 34:07Speaker 8: If you know, we're just trying our best, trying to.
- 34:11Speaker 7: Get We just trying to get out there so we
- 34:13Speaker 7: can out in the community anywhere we can so we
- 34:15Speaker 7: can show them who we are.
- 34:19Speaker 2: What do you guys say about and and Shannon was
- 34:22Speaker 2: was talking a little bit about this about self advocacy.
- 34:26Speaker 7: So that's a group we do in month Pillier I
- 34:30Speaker 7: used to be the president of it now I'm cole
- 34:33Speaker 7: vice president. It's people into electical disabilities and we go
- 34:37Speaker 7: to a we have a conference every year in Burlington
- 34:42Speaker 7: and everybody we have like five to eight hundred people.
- 34:45Speaker 7: We go and we have workshops.
- 34:47Speaker 2: What's it call it's called.
- 34:49Speaker 7: The Green Mountain Self Advocacy and the one that co
- 34:52Speaker 7: owner that one is Max Barrows. And we our group
- 34:56Speaker 7: is called Cat Capital Advocates together at my so we
- 35:01Speaker 7: get to go twice twice, So twice a month we
- 35:04Speaker 7: have meetings. We talk about certain things we're gonna do
- 35:08Speaker 7: and this time we're talking about firefighters and we're gonna
- 35:11Speaker 7: have to put firefighting chief come to our meeting and
- 35:14Speaker 7: we're gonna talk to him about what we have questions
- 35:17Speaker 7: to ask him.
- 35:20Speaker 9: They have groups around the region. Uh friends helping friends.
- 35:27Speaker 9: We all get together and just have fun as a
- 35:30Speaker 9: big one happy family.
- 35:32Speaker 7: We have a dance that night at the conference. It
- 35:34Speaker 7: took a one night conference, so it's.
- 35:37Speaker 8: So one one year.
- 35:39Speaker 9: We one day we had the police chief of moll
- 35:42Speaker 9: Pilier come just talk to us and see how things are,
- 35:47Speaker 9: what we can do when they have a disability and
- 35:50Speaker 9: all that stuff.
- 35:53Speaker 2: And there's been a lot of chat lately, it seems
- 35:59Speaker 2: in our community about folks with TBIs and advocating for
- 36:03Speaker 2: them as well. Yes a lot. Yes, have you been
- 36:08Speaker 2: down to brush Bash? No, No, you're gonna be because

- 36:30Speaker 2: the Double Tree?
- 36:31Speaker 7: Yep? May have two awards, you can have like three awards,
- 36:34Speaker 7: so you can get the biggest awards a Trisa Award,
- 36:37Speaker 7: which I've gotten that award.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Come on serious?
- 36:40Speaker 7: Yeah? Oh what they do is you each group picks
- 36:43Speaker 7: one person and you know, and only one person in
- 36:47Speaker 7: the GMSA can get it. And I got it one
- 36:49Speaker 7: year and I loved.
- 36:51Speaker 8: It, and I got the self as As Award.
- 36:54Speaker 7: That what that is. That's a group award where you
- 36:58Speaker 7: have to be thin in your group. We have to
- 37:01Speaker 7: do stuff in your group to get it. And then
- 37:03Speaker 7: we have an all a award, which one person gets our.
- 37:07Speaker 9: Senator, our senator, one of our senators got it last year.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Last year.
- 37:12Speaker 7: So Connor Casey, Connor Casey, Connor Casey is a great dude. Yeah,
- 37:17Speaker 7: So we picked up because he came to our he
- 37:19Speaker 7: came to talk to us. So we decided let's pick
- 37:21Speaker 7: pick him because he came to talk to us. So
- 37:24Speaker 7: he did.
- 37:24Speaker 2: So is does Alice get involved with us.
- 37:27Speaker 8: Alice, actually, Alice is part of our group.
- 37:30Speaker 7: She's in she's in that group. We we love having her.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Ye, she's one of the best humans on the planet.
- 37:37Speaker 9: She is so well, I'm going back to Special Olympics stuff.
- 37:42Speaker 9: So the Special Olympics of Vermont they pick from, say
- 37:47Speaker 9: like I picked Shay because I'm a coach. He gets
- 37:51Speaker 9: he can go to the summer games. And that's out
- 37:55Speaker 9: of state. Last one was no where was it?
- 38:01Speaker 7: Remember?
- 38:02Speaker 8: But well he So we have a team.
- 38:07Speaker 9: USA and they go to say like Colorado or something
- 38:14Speaker 9: whatever wherever and they just have fun down there.
- 38:19Speaker 7: So we have a player that is going this summer.
- 38:22Speaker 7: It's not playing with us right now. It's Finn. He's
- 38:25Speaker 7: representing us right now this year this summer. That's our
- 38:30Speaker 7: first time. Yep.
- 38:32Speaker 9: He uh, this is the first time from our team
- 38:34Speaker 9: got picked. Yeah for a while to the summer games.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Everybody knows Finn. That's really cool.
- 38:42Speaker 8: Wow.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Norwich April eighteenth, Local Unified Basketball bringing the athletes together,
- 38:56Speaker 2: it's just really really cool.
- 38:59Speaker 9: We actually looking for players who has a disability to
- 39:04Speaker 9: come play, just hang out and play with us, come
- 39:08Speaker 9: join the team.
- 39:09Speaker 7: You have to have experience you don't have.
- 39:11Speaker 9: You don't have to have experience. If you really want
- 39:13Speaker 9: to come and have fun, hang out with a group
- 39:15Speaker 9: of guys, we would love to do it. I got
- 39:20Speaker 9: what's underneath my wing. I had him underneath my wing.
- 39:24Speaker 7: No, no, I'm no, I'm helping now, I'm helping other people.
- 39:29Speaker 9: We we had a one person, her name was Tica
- 39:34Speaker 9: for a while she was under my wing.
- 39:38Speaker 8: We just we just love hanging out and just have
- 39:41Speaker 8: fun and having fun.
- 39:45Speaker 2: There's costs associated with some of this, a lot of this.
- 39:50Speaker 2: There's travel, price of fuel, hotels, food.
- 39:55Speaker 9: See, we don't we don't stay overnight at at the tournaments.
- 40:02Speaker 2: We drive.
- 40:03Speaker 7: Yeah, sometimes we sometimes we get together. We do stay
- 40:08Speaker 7: if we don't want to travel the night if it's
- 40:09Speaker 7: a two days.
- 40:10Speaker 9: Sometimes we go the unify and understand the uniforms cost.
- 40:16Speaker 9: But we have a big sponsor that helps us out,
- 40:20Speaker 9: Preston Kia. Preston Kia started helping us out with donations
- 40:27Speaker 9: and we got new uniforms.
- 40:30Speaker 8: With our names on the back.
- 40:32Speaker 9: It's so blood you know, if you want, whoever wants
