- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio Howdy there, faithful listeners. Thank you for tuning
- 0:12Speaker 1: into the Bible Explained podcast. I hope you all have
- 0:15Speaker 1: been having a fantastic week. It's been a nice week
- 0:18Speaker 1: for me. I cleaned my house. I don't know if
- 0:22Speaker 1: you guys remember the locust incident that I had in
- 0:26Speaker 1: my house earlier this week. Oh, that was so disgusting.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It was only one. It probably just hopped in my
- 0:33Speaker 1: house on my dogs, but it, and I didn't notice it,
- 0:35Speaker 1: but oh my gosh, that was so disgusting. And it just,
- 0:38Speaker 1: you know, really encouraged me to clean my house because
- 0:42Speaker 1: it was getting kind of disgusting if I'm being honest.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So I cleaned everything this week to make sure that
- 0:47Speaker 1: no more locusts feel like they are welcome in my
- 0:50Speaker 1: home because they are not welcome in my home. We're
- 0:54Speaker 1: gonna be reading 1 Peter 2 today, one through 10.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And this is talking about how Jesus is the chief cornerstone.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I love this chapter. I am so excited to
- 1:06Speaker 1: talk about this. We're gonna talk about the adoption of
- 1:09Speaker 1: God and how God chose us. We are going to
- 1:12Speaker 1: talk about how he is the foundation, how he is
- 1:15Speaker 1: the rock, even though a lot of people think that
- 1:17Speaker 1: it is Peter that is the rock. We're gonna talk
- 1:20Speaker 1: about all of this stuff today. So make sure to
- 1:22Speaker 1: grab your Bible and also a, hot beverage to enjoy
- 1:26Speaker 1: with me. And while you're doing that, please listen to
- 1:29Speaker 1: this message from a sponsor. And then after that, we
- 1:31Speaker 1: will dive right into 1 Peter 2, 1 through 10. Okay,
- 1:37Speaker 1: faithful listeners, thank you for listening to that. Let's go
- 1:39Speaker 1: ahead and turn in our Bibles to 1 Peter 2.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and read verses 1 through 10. I
- 1:45Speaker 1: will be reading from the World English Bible this morning,
- 1:49Speaker 1: as I usually do. putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and all evil speaking as newborn babies long for the
- 2:00Speaker 1: pure spiritual milk that with it you may grow. If
- 2:04Speaker 1: indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious, come
- 2:07Speaker 1: to him a living stone rejected indeed by men, but
- 2:11Speaker 1: chosen by God precious. You also as living stones are
- 2:15Speaker 1: built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood,
- 2:19Speaker 1: to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Because it is contained in Scripture, Behold, I lay in
- 2:26Speaker 1: Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. He who believes
- 2:30Speaker 1: in him will not be disappointed. For you who believe, therefore,
- 2:34Speaker 1: is the honor. But for those whom are disobedient, the
- 2:37Speaker 1: stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and a stumbling stone and a rock of offense. For
- 2:43Speaker 1: they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also
- 2:46Speaker 1: they were appointed. But you are a chosen race, a
- 2:49Speaker 1: royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession,
- 2:54Speaker 1: that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called
- 2:56Speaker 1: you out of darkness into his marvelous light. In the
- 2:59Speaker 1: past you were not a people, but now you are
- 3:02Speaker 1: God's people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have
- 3:05Speaker 1: obtained mercy. Starting in verse 1, it says, Putting away
- 3:10Speaker 1: therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
- 3:15Speaker 1: as newborn babies. Long for the pure spiritual milk that
- 3:19Speaker 1: with it you may grow. All right, so we've talked
- 3:22Speaker 1: about the idea of spiritual milk and also spiritual meat
- 3:26Speaker 1: before in the book of Hebrews. I believe specifically it
- 3:29Speaker 1: was Hebrews 5 where the author was yelling at people
- 3:33Speaker 1: because they weren't moving into spiritual milk. In fact, they
- 3:39Speaker 1: needed the rudimentary principles of the gospel taught to them again.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It actually says right here in Hebrews 5, 11 through 14.
- 3:48Speaker 1: About him, we have many words to say and hard
- 3:51Speaker 1: to interpret, seeing that you've become dull of hearing. For
- 3:55Speaker 1: although by this time you should be teachers, you again
- 3:58Speaker 1: need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the
- 4:00Speaker 1: first principles of the revelations of God. You've come to
- 4:04Speaker 1: need a milk and not solid food. For everyone who
- 4:07Speaker 1: lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness,
- 4:10Speaker 1: for he is a baby. But solid food is for
- 4:12Speaker 1: those who are full grown, who by reason of use
- 4:15Speaker 1: have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. So
- 4:20Speaker 1: after reading that, you might be like, well, Jen, why
- 4:22Speaker 1: is Peter telling people that they need to crave the
- 4:25Speaker 1: spiritual milk? And the author of Hebrews right here in
- 4:29Speaker 1: Hebrews 5 is telling people that they need to move
- 4:31Speaker 1: past the spiritual milk and move into spiritual meat. In
- 4:35Speaker 1: other words, more advanced topics. How do you reconcile those
- 4:39Speaker 1: two things? Well, Peter actually mentions right here in verse 2,
- 4:43Speaker 1: as newborn babies long for the pure spiritual milk. Now,
- 4:48Speaker 1: this does not mean that Christians who are more advanced
- 4:52Speaker 1: in their faith, that they should reject the spiritual milk
- 4:55Speaker 1: and be like, that stuff is boring. We don't want
- 4:58Speaker 1: to talk about the gospel message. We should definitely not
- 5:01Speaker 1: be doing that or taking Jesus's sacrifice for granted. We
- 5:04Speaker 1: should be thinking about it quite often, actually, as more
- 5:08Speaker 1: advanced Christians. But we shouldn't be staying at the basic
- 5:12Speaker 1: fundamental principles of the gospel. We should be moving into
- 5:16Speaker 1: more advanced topics in scripture. So I think that's how
- 5:19Speaker 1: you reconcile those two things. As newborn babies, Peter says
- 5:23Speaker 1: right here in verse two, long for the pure spiritual
- 5:27Speaker 1: milk that with it you may grow. In other words,
- 5:30Speaker 1: if you are a brand new Christian, don't try to
- 5:32Speaker 1: jump right into the more advanced apologetics and Christology. Long
- 5:37Speaker 1: for the basics. Start with the gospel message. And with that,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you are going to grow. If indeed, verse three, you
- 5:47Speaker 1: have tasted that the Lord is gracious, come to him
- 5:51Speaker 1: a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious. Now,
- 5:58Speaker 1: something I should say is that Peter really is bringing
- 6:01Speaker 1: us back to the basics in his letter. which is
- 6:05Speaker 1: kind of interesting because as we're going through the book
- 6:08Speaker 1: of 1 Peter on the podcast, there are things in
- 6:12Speaker 1: this book that I'm covering that I don't hear very
- 6:15Speaker 1: often in the church. And yet Peter calls this stuff
- 6:19Speaker 1: the basics. And yet what Peter is writing about here
- 6:22Speaker 1: is probably more advanced than the majority of churches ever get.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And I think that's honestly really sad that the American
- 6:30Speaker 1: church is not doing its job here in the West
- 6:33Speaker 1: to teach people anything past some of the basics of Christianity.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And you know what? Hebrews kind of had that same
- 6:40Speaker 1: thing going on where the first five chapters, the author
- 6:44Speaker 1: was covering the basics of the gospel again, because he
- 6:49Speaker 1: even said to them, you are longstanding Christians. You guys
- 6:52Speaker 1: should be teachers yourself. And yet again, verse 12 of
- 6:56Speaker 1: Hebrews 5, you need to have someone teach you the
- 6:59Speaker 1: rudiments of the first principles of the revelations of God.
- 7:02Speaker 1: You have come to need milk and not solid food.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So the first few chapters of Hebrews, And actually what
- 7:10Speaker 1: 1 Peter 2 talks about right here are very similar
- 7:14Speaker 1: because Peter goes into how we have become a royal
- 7:19Speaker 1: priesthood and how Jesus is a living stone. It says
- 7:22Speaker 1: right here in verse four, going back to 1 Peter 2,
- 7:25Speaker 1: come to him, Jesus, a living stone rejected indeed by men,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but chosen by God, precious. You also as living stones
- 7:35Speaker 1: are built up as a spiritual house to be a
- 7:38Speaker 1: holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God
- 7:43Speaker 1: through Jesus Christ. So Jesus is the living stone. He
- 7:48Speaker 1: is the rock on which the church is built. A
- 7:51Speaker 1: lot of people think that that is Peter, but no,
- 7:53Speaker 1: that is Jesus. He is the rock that the church
- 7:56Speaker 1: is built on. He is the foundation. That is what
- 8:00Speaker 1: Paul makes pretty clear. I believe it's in 1 Corinthians 2,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I think. I didn't look that up. but Jesus is
- 8:07Speaker 1: the foundation. There is no other foundation that the church
- 8:11Speaker 1: can be built on. So because Jesus is the foundation
- 8:15Speaker 1: or the rock, the living stone, you and I are
- 8:19Speaker 1: kind of like mini stones. That's what it says right
- 8:22Speaker 1: here in verse five. You also as living stones are
- 8:26Speaker 1: built up as a spiritual house. So Jesus is the
- 8:29Speaker 1: main stone. He is the main rock, the foundation of
- 8:32Speaker 1: the church. And you and I are little stones built
- 8:36Speaker 1: that individually make up the house of Christ, the body
- 8:41Speaker 1: of Christ, essentially. And we are also a holy priesthood.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So just as Hebrews talks about where Jesus is our
- 8:50Speaker 1: high priest and how Jesus is head of the heavenly temple,
- 8:56Speaker 1: We under Jesus are priests, kind of like in the
- 9:00Speaker 1: Old Testament. That was a picture of the heavenly. There
- 9:04Speaker 1: were normal Levitical priests in the Old Testament. And then,
- 9:07Speaker 1: of course, there was the high priest. So Jesus is
- 9:11Speaker 1: our high priest. He has made us right with God.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And as people who believe in Jesus, as members of
- 9:18Speaker 1: his body and members of this church, we are a
- 9:22Speaker 1: royal priesthood. We are individual priests. Just as the priests
- 9:26Speaker 1: in the Old Testament were to go out into all
- 9:28Speaker 1: of Israel and essentially teach the laws to the people,
- 9:31Speaker 1: that is what you and I are here on this earth.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We are priests going out and evangelizing for Jesus. It
- 9:39Speaker 1: says that we are offering up spiritual sacrifices. What would
- 9:42Speaker 1: that spiritual sacrifice be? Well, Paul actually says that our
- 9:45Speaker 1: individual bodies are a sacrifice to God. Pour yourself out
- 9:49Speaker 1: as a drink offering to God. In other words, giving
- 9:54Speaker 1: our lives to Jesus, becoming born again, as Peter has
- 9:56Speaker 1: been talking about in this book. He also says that
- 9:58Speaker 1: we are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. So there
- 10:09Speaker 1: is no other way to be acceptable to God. Only
- 10:12Speaker 1: Jesus can do this because verse six, it is contained
- 10:17Speaker 1: in scripture. Behold, I lay in Zion, a chief cornerstone
- 10:21Speaker 1: chosen and precious. He who believes in him will not
- 10:25Speaker 1: be disappointed. And that is talked about in Isaiah chapter 28,
- 10:30Speaker 1: verse 16, which says, So this is what the sovereign
- 10:36Speaker 1: Lord says. See, I lay a stone in Zion, a
- 10:39Speaker 1: tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation. The
- 10:44Speaker 1: one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So there you go. Jesus is the rock. He is
- 10:51Speaker 1: the precious cornerstone and the sure foundation. So everything that
- 10:56Speaker 1: comes into the church must be in line with the foundation.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Because if you start using a different foundation, well, Jesus
- 11:04Speaker 1: actually warns us about that in a parable where he
- 11:07Speaker 1: says that a man was building a foundation on sand,
- 11:12Speaker 1: like shifting sand. And when the winds came, his house
- 11:17Speaker 1: was torn down because it did not have a sure foundation.
- 11:20Speaker 1: But when somebody built their foundation on the rock, it
- 11:23Speaker 1: didn't matter how many winds came. That house was sure.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So anything that comes into the church, we need to
- 11:30Speaker 1: make sure. that it is built on the foundation that
- 11:33Speaker 1: is Christ. And if it is not, we cannot allow
- 11:37Speaker 1: it in the church because then the church can collapse
- 11:40Speaker 1: in on itself. So we must build everything on Jesus
- 11:44Speaker 1: being that rock. It says in verse seven, for you
- 11:48Speaker 1: who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who
- 11:51Speaker 1: are disobedient, it says the stone which the builders rejected
- 11:56Speaker 1: has become the chief cornerstone and a stumbling stone and
- 12:00Speaker 1: a rock of a fence. So this is talked about
- 12:04Speaker 1: many times actually throughout scripture. Romans chapter 9 mentions it. Isaiah,
- 12:11Speaker 1: what was it? Isaiah 8, 14 and 15 mentions it.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And Jesus himself mentions this also in Matthew chapter 21,
- 12:18Speaker 1: 42 through 44. Here's what Jesus says. He's talking to
- 12:23Speaker 1: the Pharisees starting in verse 42. Jesus said to them,
- 12:27Speaker 1: did you never read in the scriptures, the stone which
- 12:30Speaker 1: the builders rejected was made the head of the corner.
- 12:33Speaker 1: This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes. Therefore,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I tell you, God's kingdom will be taken away from
- 12:39Speaker 1: you and will be given to a nation producing its fruit.
- 12:43Speaker 1: He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but on whomever it will fall, it will scatter him
- 12:49Speaker 1: as dust. And that is something that Peter mentioned right
- 12:53Speaker 1: here in verse eight, that Jesus is a stumbling stone
- 12:58Speaker 1: and a rock of a fence. And also in Isaiah eight,
- 13:02Speaker 1: verse 14 and 15, it says, he will be a sanctuary,
- 13:05Speaker 1: but for both houses of Israel, he will be a
- 13:08Speaker 1: stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall. For
- 13:11Speaker 1: the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and
- 13:14Speaker 1: a snare. Many will stumble over it, fall, be broken,
- 13:17Speaker 1: be snared and be captured. So this is a perplexing
- 13:22Speaker 1: idea that even Jesus himself said that being the chief cornerstone,
- 13:26Speaker 1: people will trip over him and they will be broken
- 13:30Speaker 1: into pieces. And Jesus says, whoever this stone will fall on,
- 13:34Speaker 1: it will scatter him as dust. So there's a few
- 13:37Speaker 1: ways to think about this. The first is that it's
- 13:41Speaker 1: probably better to fall onto Jesus and be broken into
- 13:46Speaker 1: pieces than it is for him to fall on you
- 13:50Speaker 1: and to be completely scattered as dust, like shattered and destroyed.
- 13:56Speaker 1: So in other words, humble yourself, fall onto Jesus, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: that will break you in a lot of ways, because
- 14:03Speaker 1: you will have to humble yourself. You will have to
- 14:05Speaker 1: become somebody other than you are. But Jesus will pick
- 14:08Speaker 1: up the broken pieces and mold you into something even
- 14:12Speaker 1: better than you were before. So that is one way
- 14:15Speaker 1: to interpret that verse. And another way to interpret this
- 14:19Speaker 1: is that anybody who was of the nation of Israel
- 14:23Speaker 1: during the time of Jesus, they rejected the chief cornerstone.
- 14:28Speaker 1: They rejected Jesus's message of salvation and repentance. And this
- 14:33Speaker 1: caused them to stumble, even though they initially believed they
- 14:37Speaker 1: were saved because they were of Abraham's bloodline. They now
- 14:40Speaker 1: have to come to terms with the fact that God
- 14:43Speaker 1: has chosen another people. And going back to 1 Peter
- 14:46Speaker 1: 2 verse 8, that's kind of what it says right here.
- 14:49Speaker 1: For they stumble at the word, being disobedient to which
- 14:53Speaker 1: also they were appointed. So these people were appointed either
- 14:59Speaker 1: to destruction or or they were appointed to be God's
- 15:03Speaker 1: chosen people and completely rejected it. Either interpretation works, because
- 15:08Speaker 1: if you go to Romans chapter 9, this is exactly
- 15:11Speaker 1: what Paul talks about. The entire chapter is talking about
- 15:16Speaker 1: the fact that Israel was chosen. God chose them from
- 15:19Speaker 1: the beginning to be his people, but then the Israelites
- 15:23Speaker 1: rejected the call of God. That's what it says right here.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Romans 9, 1 through 5. I tell you the truth
- 15:31Speaker 1: in Christ. I am not lying. My conscience testifying with
- 15:34Speaker 1: me in the Holy Spirit that I have great sorrow
- 15:37Speaker 1: and unceasing pain in my heart. For I wish that
- 15:40Speaker 1: I myself were accursed from Christ for my brother's sake.
- 15:44Speaker 1: My relatives, according to the flesh, who are the Israelites,
- 15:48Speaker 1: whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving
- 15:52Speaker 1: of the law, the service and the promises. So in
- 15:58Speaker 1: this chapter, Paul is mourning because the Israelites have rejected
- 16:08Speaker 1: the call of God, even though it says right here
- 16:10Speaker 1: that they were the chosen. They had the adoption and
- 16:14Speaker 1: they fully rejected it. And Paul goes on to talk
- 16:18Speaker 1: about this rejection that the Israelites have in the rest
- 16:22Speaker 1: of this chapter. So jumping down to verse 22, here's
- 16:26Speaker 1: what this says. us whom he has also called not
- 16:45Speaker 1: from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles. As
- 16:49Speaker 1: he says in Hosea, I will call them my people,
- 16:52Speaker 1: which were not my people and her beloved, who was
- 16:55Speaker 1: not my beloved. And it will be in the place
- 16:57Speaker 1: where it was said to them, you are not my
- 16:59Speaker 1: people there. They will be called the children of the
- 17:02Speaker 1: living God. So in other words, the adoption that Israel
- 17:07Speaker 1: initially had is being given to to not just the Israelites,
- 17:13Speaker 1: but the Gentiles, basically anybody who will believe in the
- 17:16Speaker 1: name of Jesus. They are now the chosen. They are
- 17:20Speaker 1: now the adopted. And God is doing this because the
- 17:23Speaker 1: initial chosen people, the Israelites, had completely rejected the Messiah.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Paul concludes this chapter with a verse that we have
- 17:33Speaker 1: been talking about this whole time. Here's what he says.
- 17:36Speaker 1: What shall we say then? That the Gentiles who didn't
- 17:39Speaker 1: follow after righteousness attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which
- 17:42Speaker 1: is of faith, but Israel following after a law of
- 17:45Speaker 1: righteousness didn't arrive at the law of righteousness. Why? Because
- 17:50Speaker 1: they didn't seek it by faith, but as it were
- 17:53Speaker 1: by the works of the law. They stumbled over the
- 17:56Speaker 1: stumbling stone, even as it is written, behold, I lay
- 18:00Speaker 1: in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock of offense,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and no one who believes in him will be disappointed.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So Paul concludes all of that by talking about this
- 18:11Speaker 1: verse that Peter mentions, the stumbling stone, that certain people
- 18:16Speaker 1: are going to stumble over him and reject him and
- 18:19Speaker 1: be broken in the end. But those who truly trust
- 18:23Speaker 1: in Jesus, they will never be disappointed if they put
- 18:27Speaker 1: their hope in that rock and make him their foundation.
- 18:31Speaker 1: So jumping back to 1 Peter 2, verse 9, Peter says,
- 18:35Speaker 1: So either they were appointed to destruction. Peter says, because
- 18:45Speaker 1: of their disobedience. And that's the same thing that Romans
- 18:48Speaker 1: 9 talks about. Or they were appointed to the adoption
- 18:51Speaker 1: and rejected it, which again is what Romans chapter 9
- 18:55Speaker 1: talks about. Either way, these people who have rejected Jesus
- 18:59Speaker 1: are not the royal priesthood, even though the Israelites believed
- 19:03Speaker 1: that they had the priesthood. Because if you look at
- 19:06Speaker 1: the Old Testament laws, that is what God ordained for them.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He gave the priesthood to the Israelites. But now that priesthood,
- 19:14Speaker 1: because of the lack of obedience to Jesus, has now
- 19:19Speaker 1: been given to us, which is what Peter concludes with
- 19:22Speaker 1: here in verses 9 and 10. He says, but you,
- 19:26Speaker 1: those who believe in Jesus, are a chosen race, a
- 19:29Speaker 1: royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession,
- 19:34Speaker 1: that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called
- 19:37Speaker 1: you out of darkness into his marvelous light. In the past,
- 19:42Speaker 1: you were not a people. but now you are God's
- 19:44Speaker 1: people who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
- 19:49Speaker 1: So anybody who believes in Jesus has been called and
- 19:53Speaker 1: has been chosen, who initially had not obtained God's mercy
- 19:57Speaker 1: is what it says right here in verse 10, but
- 20:00Speaker 1: now have obtained God's mercy. You and I can now
- 20:05Speaker 1: become children of God through Jesus's sacrifices. When we believe
- 20:10Speaker 1: on the name of Jesus, we become part of God's
- 20:13Speaker 1: family and we don't have to suffer the consequences of
- 20:17Speaker 1: our sin and death any longer because Jesus took that
- 20:21Speaker 1: punishment on himself. And then to top it all off,
- 20:25Speaker 1: he chose us so that we can live in eternity
- 20:29Speaker 1: and in perfection with him. So yeah, I guess going
- 20:32Speaker 1: back to that original point that Peter made here of
- 20:35Speaker 1: loving the spiritual milk or longing for it. I mean,
- 20:39Speaker 1: everything we talked about today is technically spiritual milk because
- 20:44Speaker 1: we're talking about the fundamental principles of the gospel. And
- 20:48Speaker 1: so no matter how old we are as Christians, no
- 20:51Speaker 1: matter how advanced we are in our spiritual walk, this
- 20:54Speaker 1: is something all of us should love and reflect on
- 20:58Speaker 1: because everything in the Bible hinges on Jesus's sacrifice. So
- 21:03Speaker 1: I hope that you guys enjoyed this. today's episode and
- 21:06Speaker 1: learn something new. But before I say goodbye to all
- 21:08Speaker 1: of you wonderful, faithful listeners, please listen to this last
