- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up
- 0:05Speaker 1: next to you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonia
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. Welcome morning. Welcome to
- 0:13Speaker 1: the show, day two of your September holidays. I'm sure
- 0:16Speaker 1: all of you are sleeping in right now. Tomorrow it's 9:9, Sonia.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Means all the sales, is it?
- 0:22Speaker 1: And also, do you think people are preparing for a
- 0:24Speaker 1: marriage signing cert? There we go. Um, whatever it is
- 0:28Speaker 1: you're up for this early in the morning, we wish
- 0:30Speaker 1: you all the best in giving you all the energy
- 0:32Speaker 1: you need. So, given how you mentioned her name, I
- 0:34Speaker 1: got curious. I just googled what is Nicole Kidman up to.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Nothing much actually. I think she's enjoying her life, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: be honest. I think a couple of interesting parenting points
- 0:45Speaker 1: of views from Nicole Kidman being shared online about how
- 0:49Speaker 1: I would not be my best friend for my daughters.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I think she wants to maintain that boundary between a
- 0:54Speaker 1: mother and a daughter, and just to share with you,
- 0:57Speaker 1: her height is 1.8 m. She's almost as tall as
- 0:59Speaker 1: I am and she's 59 this year.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Um, I have to say I remember I just did
- 1:04Speaker 1: a quick search because I remember watching her in a
- 1:06Speaker 1: recent film. I think it was 2024, 2025. Um, it's
- 1:10Speaker 1: called The Perfect Couple. If you've not watched it yet,
- 1:15Speaker 1: I think it's still available on Netflix. It was actually
- 1:17Speaker 1: not bad, because she's not been in any shows in
- 1:20Speaker 1: quite some time, right? So the synopsis is when a
- 1:23Speaker 1: lavish wedding ends.
- 1:24Speaker 1: a disaster before it could even begin with a body
- 1:27Speaker 1: discovered just hours before the ceremony. Everyone at the wedding
- 1:30Speaker 1: party is a suspect. So it's a whodunit kind of movie.
- 1:34Speaker 1: If you haven't watched it, it's actually not bad. Yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 1: rated quite well on Rotten Tomatoes also. Also, you know
- 1:39Speaker 1: the movie that she was in, Moulin Rouge, back in
- 1:41Speaker 1: the year 2001, ages ago. The stage musical is coming
- 1:45Speaker 1: to Marina Bay Sands.
- 1:47Speaker 1: February next year. So I was just at MBS over
- 1:50Speaker 1: the weekends. Um, shout out to Milo's, really wonderful food there.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And it was just right opposite the theater, right? So
- 1:56Speaker 1: through the glass I saw they already put up the
- 1:58Speaker 1: posters for Moulin Rouge. I think we both saw the
- 2:00Speaker 1: same banner. Yeah, beautiful. So can't wait for that. I'm
- 2:03Speaker 1: definitely gonna bring my mom. I need to be very
- 2:05Speaker 1: careful how I pronounce the title of these movies, OK.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So some updates coming your way about Ariana Grande. She
- 2:14Speaker 1: is in the spotlight for a while during her hiatus
- 2:17Speaker 1: period because do you know the movie is gonna be
- 2:21Speaker 1: focus in law? Oh no.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh
- 2:27Speaker 1: I mean, they knew what they were doing when they
- 2:28Speaker 1: created that title, obviously, and, and the name in itself is, um,
- 2:33Speaker 1: it contributes a lot to the premise of the show,
- 2:35Speaker 1: making the job for us all the more harder. Look,
- 2:37Speaker 1: if you've never watched it before, a bit of a
- 2:39Speaker 1: throwback for you, but just go catch it. I think
- 2:41Speaker 1: it's available on Netflix, right, if I'm not wrong. Hey,
- 2:43Speaker 1: but it stars the likes of Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I mean for him to say yes, it's OK lah. Look, look,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I think for Robert De Niro.
- 2:52Speaker 1: He spent his whole life, right, acting in very serious films, right?
- 2:56Speaker 1: Very intense, very serious characters, and I grew up listening
- 2:59Speaker 1: to my, my parents like wax lyrical about him, like
- 3:02Speaker 1: they love Robert De Niro. And then finally, I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: he's in his retirement phase. He's taking up all these
- 3:07Speaker 1: like comedy fun shows, you know, and I love it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: He's great in comedy, can be quite funny as well, humor,
- 3:14Speaker 1: very good comic timing, but Ariana Grande is actually in.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Fokker-in-law and she plays the role of Olivia Jones who
- 3:23Speaker 1: could be the potential daughter-in-law of one of the Fokker.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Oh nice. I mean we've only ever seen her act
- 3:30Speaker 1: in like Wicked, right? So she's back in the spotlight
- 3:33Speaker 1: for a while to join the cast in movie promotion. Nice.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But I'm not too sure how long, but maybe a
- 3:40Speaker 1: few press interviews about her character only, and that's it.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, look, we know what was going on
- 3:46Speaker 1: prior to this, you know, she took a bit of
- 3:47Speaker 1: time off to just look after herself. I think after
- 3:51Speaker 1: quite a lot of people just had so much criticism
- 3:53Speaker 1: out there, right? But hey, you know what, I hope
- 3:55Speaker 1: the girl got her space and she is in a
- 3:58Speaker 1: good place. By the way, these movies.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Now known as the Fokker series and it's been around for,
- 4:04Speaker 1: oh my goodness, 26 years. Wow, an entire lifetime. That's
- 4:09Speaker 1: the way to do a franchise. OK, I'm gonna stop
- 4:11Speaker 1: saying the last name. OK, just in case. I'm not
- 4:14Speaker 1: sure if you saw this video and this piece of
- 4:16Speaker 1: news making rounds last night actually of a private hire driver, OK,
- 4:21Speaker 1: that was, uh, he's he's a bit on the older side.
- 4:24Speaker 1: He's on his, um,
- 4:25Speaker 1: He's driving, but you know, on the side of his windscreen,
- 4:28Speaker 1: there's his phone that's attached to the window. Yeah. So, OK,
- 4:32Speaker 1: that is allowed. Like, in fact, that's what you should
- 4:35Speaker 1: do if you're driving. So then if you see any notification, OK,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you can see it right there in your line of vision, right?
- 4:41Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean that you're allowed to like text
- 4:44Speaker 1: and like touch it whenever you want. I mean, it
- 4:46Speaker 1: is advised not to, and they've got very strict rules now.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Even if you hold, if you hold your phone, that's
- 4:53Speaker 1: also an offense. There are new laws in place. There
- 4:57Speaker 1: are new laws, but you're allowed to put it there.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You are allowed to put it there I think you can,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you can touch it if you're at like a traffic light.
- 5:06Speaker 1: If I'm not wrong, if I'm not wrong, OK, please
- 5:09Speaker 1: correct me if I am, but that's what I understand. Um,
- 5:12Speaker 1: so unfortunately for this particular driver,
- 5:16Speaker 1: He was actually still on the road. He was driving
- 5:19Speaker 1: when his passenger noticed that he was touching his phone
- 5:22Speaker 1: and texting while he was driving. They were not at
- 5:24Speaker 1: a complete stop. They were not at a traffic light, nothing, OK?
- 5:27Speaker 1: Not exactly, is it? So, she starts to roll her
- 5:31Speaker 1: camera to record him and she confronts him about the
- 5:35Speaker 1: whole situation. Although, of course, the clip starts and ends
- 5:38Speaker 1: at a, you know,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Specific, specific points to which I don't know if that
- 5:43Speaker 1: was the full video, but things got pretty heated. Like
- 5:45Speaker 1: he started, um, talking back to her and she starts
- 5:48Speaker 1: saying like, you know, this is, this is my life,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, like please focus, and uh he allegedly was very,
- 5:54Speaker 1: very agitated about it and he said something like, my
- 5:57Speaker 1: daughter just texted me about dinner. Can I not just
- 5:59Speaker 1: even reply like a simple letter or simple.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Wow, this is tough. Exactly. So that's why I wanted
- 6:05Speaker 1: to ask you, right, like, what do you honestly think
- 6:08Speaker 1: because the internet is quite split, no. They're saying that, OK,
- 6:11Speaker 1: it's wrong that he's using his phone while he's driving,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but what if it was an emergency or his daughter
- 6:17Speaker 1: needed something very urgently? OK, to be honest with you,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I do have drivers who won't. They will actually press
- 6:24Speaker 1: the microphone button.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Like note into the headset or the headpiece that they
- 6:28Speaker 1: are wearing. So the best solution is to just call, yeah, right?
- 6:33Speaker 1: I mean that could be the best hands-free option. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: for example, if I'm the driver, I would say, Hey,
- 6:38Speaker 1: sorry sir, can I please speak to my daughter for
- 6:40Speaker 1: a 15 seconds. And also the reason why I'm on
- 6:46Speaker 1: the fence is this lady, right?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Just ask the uncle, don't text. Why must roll the
- 6:51Speaker 1: camera unless, unless there was a prior disagreement. Exactly. That's
- 6:56Speaker 1: what I mean to say that when the video ended,
- 6:59Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that is the whole story. Yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 1: so I mean, I guess it's being looked into right now,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but as of now, the comments are split. People are
- 7:07Speaker 1: saying that the lady was acting a bit like a
- 7:09Speaker 1: Karen also just based on the way she was saying things.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I can already hear it a mile away, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: the typical Singaporean phrase. I'm going to viral you. I'm
- 7:19Speaker 1: going to roll my camera. I'm going to viral you
- 7:21Speaker 1: on the TikTok. But hey, look, um, regardless, we're not
- 7:25Speaker 1: encouraging your usage of phones while you're driving. No, we're
- 7:28Speaker 1: just saying that in this context, there could be more
- 7:31Speaker 1: to it. Yeah. But again, as a passenger and also
- 7:35Speaker 1: as a driver, I think we need to.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Be more understanding of each other. We need to communicate
- 7:39Speaker 1: a bit more, I feel. But this one I stand by. Sir, ma'am,
- 7:43Speaker 1: if you're driving right now, if the morning shift is
- 7:46Speaker 1: not for you, don't do it. Right, right. If you're sleepy,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you're tired don't do it. OK. Here's an age test
- 7:51Speaker 1: for you, Sonia. Name me a few things from the
- 7:54Speaker 1: 90s that you still remember that happened here in Singapore or.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Here in Singapore, not like items associated to the 90s.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Could be items as well that you can find in
- 8:06Speaker 1: Singapore or was here in Singapore. Tamagotchi, that's one. It's
- 8:10Speaker 1: still around. 90s, yeah. It's still around. They are reinventing it.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I heard as well. OK, yeah, Bay blades, am I
- 8:17Speaker 1: on the right track here? Like toys. OK, so now
- 8:20Speaker 1: think food offers and food options.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Was A&W here in Singapore before they left and came back? Yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 1: the Singapore Zoo. Correct. Yeah, sort of, OK, so A&W,
- 8:33Speaker 1: nothing to do with that. I remember McDonald's used to
- 8:35Speaker 1: have the $2 meals. Come to McDonald's, $2 is all
- 8:39Speaker 1: you need. Again, I watched too much television as a kid.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I wasn't allowed to watch much television as a kid,
- 8:45Speaker 1: the opposite. One more thing, one more thing, food related. Yes,
- 8:50Speaker 1: food related.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Well, you got me here, man. I have no idea.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And aside from A&W. Are you ready? It's coming back
- 8:58Speaker 1: 10th to 27th September, Thursdays to Sundays, 90 minutes dine-in period.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Give me a hint. Pizza Hut buffet. Oh, I mean
- 9:09Speaker 1: Pizza Hut is still here.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I mean, the Pizza Hut buffet option disappeared. Yeah, it's
- 9:13Speaker 1: like novelty now when it comes back, it comes back. No,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I remember this because, OK, the Pizza Hut that's at
- 9:18Speaker 1: the Sigal area which has been there for so long, um,
- 9:21Speaker 1: my parents used to bring me there and it was
- 9:23Speaker 1: during the buffet timings. OK, so it will be available
- 9:27Speaker 1: at only 6 Pizza Hut outlets here in Singapore. Compass One,
- 9:32Speaker 1: Tiong Bahru Plaza.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Bukit Panjang Plaza, Heartbeat at Bedok, Wisteria Mall, and Buangkok
- 9:39Speaker 1: Square Mall. So they picked all the, I think, highly
- 9:42Speaker 1: populated places, right? Yeah, so congratulations again from 11:00 a.m.
- 9:46Speaker 1: to 10:00 p.m. Thursdays to Sundays, 90 minutes dine-in period
- 9:51Speaker 1: from 10 to 27 September. What's the price point? OK,
- 9:54Speaker 1: it's worth it. Really.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You, you must go there hungry. Adults on weekdays, you
- 10:00Speaker 1: pay $19.95 plus plus. Saturday and Sunday, you pay $22.95
- 10:07Speaker 1: plus plus. OK. Can I list you some of the
- 10:09Speaker 1: pizzas on offer? Sure, of course, Hawaiian pizza, beef pepperoni,
- 10:14Speaker 1: chicken supreme, ham and shroom. They've got mushroom uglio olio, free.
- 10:19Speaker 1: No drinks. I'm there. See, here's the thing, Joakim. I'm
- 10:22Speaker 1: the most like, I'm the most bohua person to bring
- 10:25Speaker 1: to these kind of buffets, OK, and buffet I think, yeah, like, honestly,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I would just go all the useless things and what
- 10:31Speaker 1: I'll get full after 2 or 3 slices of pizza
- 10:34Speaker 1: for like bread really fills me up, you know. OK,
- 10:37Speaker 1: just make sure you eat your worth, and I don't
- 10:39Speaker 1: think I will, if it's a must, don't eat the crust. That,
- 10:44Speaker 1: that's a great if it's a must, don't eat the crust.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Cannot, cannot. This one encouraging food wastage. That's true. That's true.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I will say, I don't know. I'm better at like
- 10:55Speaker 1: Asian carbs like rice and noodles and so I can
- 10:59Speaker 1: go on.
- 11:00Speaker 1: But for bread, I'm like 23 slices of pizza, I'm
- 11:03Speaker 1: done already. You know, you're the one person where a
- 11:06Speaker 1: farm in Singapore announces a vegetable buffet, I'll bring you
- 11:09Speaker 1: vegetable buffet. That one you will eat your, OK. You're right,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you're right. OK, so this has got to do with
- 11:17Speaker 1: our behavior as a tourist when we go overseas, OK.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Sometimes you may not be aware of the different rules
- 11:25Speaker 1: and regulations other countries have, um, but it also doesn't
- 11:28Speaker 1: mean that you should just blindly do whatever you want
- 11:30Speaker 1: to do, even if you have good intentions. I would
- 11:33Speaker 1: like to promise that I'll never ever Singapore's face. Don't
- 11:38Speaker 1: speak too soon. I'm a law-abiding citizen and law abiding tourist, OK?
- 11:42Speaker 1: We know that you don't need to say less. You don't,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you don't need to say so much, OK. So, uh,
- 11:47Speaker 1: what happened was that this particular
- 11:50Speaker 1: Um, tourist who happens to be an actress from Taiwan
- 11:54Speaker 1: went to visit Japan, OK? And you know, Japan, a
- 11:58Speaker 1: lot of areas of Japan can be very spiritual. If
- 12:00Speaker 1: you've ever ventured out of Tokyo and Osaka, you know, um,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know, even Kyoto, for example, they, they're very spiritual.
- 12:07Speaker 1: And they have loadsles, shrines, yeah, no, exactly.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So, this Taiwanese actress, um, she apparently has been having
- 12:17Speaker 1: this practice of doing a prayer at these holy places, OK?
- 12:22Speaker 1: And OK, that sounds fine enough. Um, however, she will
- 12:25Speaker 1: actually use a little bit of oil and she will
- 12:27Speaker 1: pour it at the spot that she was saying a
- 12:29Speaker 1: prayer at.
- 12:30Speaker 1: To which I did a quick search about um pouring
- 12:33Speaker 1: oil and using it for prayer. It is very normal.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Apparently it's a symbolic and spiritual practice. In fact, Christianity, uh,
- 12:41Speaker 1: Christians and Catholics do have like, you know, the, the
- 12:43Speaker 1: oil that you bless and, you know, you anoint people
- 12:46Speaker 1: or in the past, they used to anoint the sick
- 12:48Speaker 1: with oil, that kind of stuff, right? And holy water
- 12:51Speaker 1: and holy, yeah, it could be related to that, although
- 12:54Speaker 1: I don't know what, you know, exactly her religion is.
- 12:58Speaker 1: She apparently poured some oil over an artifact that is
- 13:02Speaker 1: 1200 years old. OK. And yeah, despite it being only
- 13:09Speaker 1: in one spot, like it wasn't like the whole thing,
- 13:11Speaker 1: she went to pour like oil over it. No, it's
- 13:13Speaker 1: just one spot.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But um I think the, the, the people who are
- 13:17Speaker 1: taking care of the entire area and, you know, the,
- 13:21Speaker 1: the artifacts and everything, they noticed a weird stain on
- 13:24Speaker 1: the artifacts. So upon um further investigation, they looked into
- 13:29Speaker 1: the CCTV and they saw her uncapping a small bottle
- 13:32Speaker 1: of oil and then anointing her.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Anointing it and then saying a prayer, to which I, uh,
- 13:38Speaker 1: like I know I feel she had good intentions. Now, unfortunately,
- 13:42Speaker 1: she's about to be fined about $4000 Singapore dollars for that. Although, um,
- 13:47Speaker 1: Japanese netizens are not happy with it. They're like, only $4000.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, because it's a 1200 year old artifact treasure. Exactly.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Can I ask, is there a way to restore it?
- 14:01Speaker 1: I think they are, they're working on it right now. Um,
- 14:04Speaker 1: if not, they wouldn't come up with a price so quickly, right?
- 14:07Speaker 1: Maybe that's about the price taken to restore it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Here's the plot twist, OK? So they investigate her and
- 14:13Speaker 1: they question her and everything, and she reveals that she's
- 14:16Speaker 1: been doing this all along at other places too. So now,
- 14:20Speaker 1: the netizens are saying, go and investigate the other national
- 14:24Speaker 1: treasures and.
- 14:25Speaker 1: the artifacts around Japan. What if she already did it there?
- 14:28Speaker 1: I mean, you know what I mean? Yeah, I don't
- 14:36Speaker 1: think it was necessary for her to do that. Like
- 14:38Speaker 1: I said, even though she had good intentions.
- 14:41Speaker 1: End of the story. So because of this lady, I'm
- 14:47Speaker 1: pretty sure there'll be saying please don't pour oil or
- 14:48Speaker 1: they might even put a little barrier, you know, like
- 14:52Speaker 1: those strings that they use to indicate do not cross
- 14:54Speaker 1: this line kind of thing. But yeah, this, uh, this
- 14:57Speaker 1: is the case right now. It is what it is.
- 14:59Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens because they're investigating her other.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Alleged incidents now. Just checking the oil that she uses
- 15:05Speaker 1: is prayer, right? Yeah, yeah, OK. Well, presumably prayer. They
- 15:10Speaker 1: just said just in case. Not olive oil, cooking oil,
- 15:13Speaker 1: no no no. Let me just do our friends over
- 15:17Speaker 1: at Singapore Airlines a favor. Yes, I think in the
- 15:20Speaker 1: last few days or maybe even weeks news about them
- 15:22Speaker 1: in the press.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Not really shedding a good light because people are very
- 15:27Speaker 1: split in the comments section. Lots of things are being said,
- 15:31Speaker 1: but you would know in Jakarta because of Mount Anak Krakatau,
- 15:36Speaker 1: the eruption, which is very serious, by the way, sending
- 15:39Speaker 1: love to our friends over in Indonesia, not only are
- 15:41Speaker 1: they dealing with the haze, but dealing with volcanoes now.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Um, so some of the airports over in Jakarta were shut.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So if you're wandering the distance between the Jakarta airport
- 15:53Speaker 1: and Mount Anak Krakatau, it's about 180 km away. So
- 15:58Speaker 1: it's like driving from Singapore to Moa in Johor. So
- 16:03Speaker 1: it's quite near.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Because if you're flying, basically you still experience the plumes
- 16:07Speaker 1: of smoke and everything and there'll be dust particles and
- 16:10Speaker 1: all sorts of things inside. So I think uh on
- 16:13Speaker 1: threads where I'm quite active now, it's really become the
- 16:15Speaker 1: new Twitter. Uh, I get fed some tweets or threads
- 16:19Speaker 1: from people overseas, especially around the region.
- 16:22Speaker 1: You can see a lot of, a lot of Indonesians
- 16:25Speaker 1: actually praising Singapore Airlines because some of them are scheduled
- 16:28Speaker 1: to fly back to Jakarta, but because the airports are closed,
- 16:32Speaker 1: what's gonna happen, right? So some are praising Singapore Airlines'
- 16:36Speaker 1: customer service in person, you know, fast acting. They were
- 16:40Speaker 1: put up at five-star hotels here in Singapore. I'm not wrong,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I saw a screenshot that said Pullman Hotel, for example.
- 16:46Speaker 1: They were given breakfast. They were, they were given the
- 16:48Speaker 1: absolute care and the customer service team handling this actually
- 16:54Speaker 1: stayed with a few of the passengers all the way
- 16:56Speaker 1: till they were able to get rebooked on a new flight.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And if I'm not wrong, some of the airports in
- 17:01Speaker 1: Jakarta have since reopened. Yeah. So well done Singapore Airlines. That's, honestly,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I mean happy to read this. Look, um, I've, I,
- 17:09Speaker 1: it's not because we're biased or anything, but
- 17:11Speaker 1: When I came back from Europe quite recently, um, from Tomorrowland, right?
- 17:16Speaker 1: I told you that my luggage didn't make it onto
- 17:18Speaker 1: the flight and like it wasn't Singapore Airlines' fault. It
- 17:21Speaker 1: was actually the airport.
- 17:23Speaker 1: The airport's luggage belts all broke down collectively. So I
- 17:26Speaker 1: think like 70% or 80% of the baggage didn't make it, right?
- 17:30Speaker 1: But SQ really, they, they made it a point to
- 17:33Speaker 1: track it, they made it a point to update me.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It was so efficient. My luggage went on the next
- 17:38Speaker 1: flight back, you know, I, I had it delivered to
- 17:40Speaker 1: my doorstep. I was just like, wow.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I don't know if I can experience or trust this
- 17:45Speaker 1: with any other airline. I don't know whether I'm just
- 17:46Speaker 1: being biased, right? Singapore Airlines.
- 17:54Speaker 1: What one customer might get might not be the same
- 17:57Speaker 1: experience for another one. So we hope that this represents
- 18:00Speaker 1: the majority of people that were flying or supposed to
- 18:03Speaker 1: fly on board Singapore Airlines to Jakarta in the last
- 18:06Speaker 1: few days. But of course, you know what, I want
- 18:08Speaker 1: to say this, I am biased. I want our national
- 18:11Speaker 1: carrier to do well. I want us to win. Yes,
- 18:14Speaker 1: come on, Skytrack, I'm not sure, but just in life
- 18:19Speaker 1: in life, my friends. Let's go. OK.
- 18:22Speaker 1: So I saw this post that went pretty viral because
- 18:25Speaker 1: a lot of people had their opinions. Um, I don't
- 18:28Speaker 1: think this lady is from Singapore, doesn't sound like it.
- 18:31Speaker 1: But you know, with social media, anything can pop off and,
- 18:34Speaker 1: you know, problems are universal, right? We can really relate
- 18:37Speaker 1: across any culture, any country. So this lady posted and said, um,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you know, with adult friendships, it's kind of difficult to
- 18:45Speaker 1: make plans. So you, you really look forward to meeting
- 18:48Speaker 1: your friends when you finally have a plan set in stone, right?
- 18:52Speaker 1: And then she tells, she talks about uh one particular
- 18:56Speaker 1: time where her kid actually fell really sick in the
- 19:00Speaker 1: morning and it's the day of um the meet-up with
- 19:03Speaker 1: her friends. So, even though she didn't want to, she
- 19:07Speaker 1: decided to cancel on her plans, saying that like, hey guys,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, I'm so sorry. I know we planned this
- 19:12Speaker 1: for so long, but my kid felt really sick this
- 19:15Speaker 1: morning and I most likely have to stay in to
- 19:17Speaker 1: take care of him or her. Um, so I'm, I'm
- 19:20Speaker 1: not gonna come for the dinner.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Not to be captain skeptical, but was the kid really
- 19:26Speaker 1: sick or was it used I don't know as an excuse? No,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I don't think it was you. She apparently it was.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Let's just take it as it's real. Oh my God,
- 19:33Speaker 1: it's so hard to confide in you. I feel no, no, no,
- 19:36Speaker 1: you can confide in me.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yes, but if you have the skeptical if you cancel
- 19:40Speaker 1: plans on the day of, OK, look, if you use
- 19:43Speaker 1: your family member and say that my mom or dad
- 19:46Speaker 1: or my kid is sick just to get off of plans, right,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I don't know what kind of person you are, to
- 19:50Speaker 1: which we have plenty of that here in Singapore. Hello. OK,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I don't know whether it's just me being like superstitious,
- 19:55Speaker 1: but I'd rather not. I don't want to, yeah, I
- 19:58Speaker 1: don't want to say like, oh, my family members sick
- 19:59Speaker 1: then I.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I mean, what if it really happens, right? as an
- 20:03Speaker 1: excuse to get scared I've heard. I'm sure, I'm sure,
- 20:09Speaker 1: you know, anyway, so this lady said, OK, I can't
- 20:12Speaker 1: go urgently sick, you know, yeah, that's it. Apparently her
- 20:15Speaker 1: friends said that she still has to pay for her
- 20:18Speaker 1: share of the dinner, and they collectively agreed, you know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: they collectively agreed and said, oh, by the way, your
- 20:24Speaker 1: share is still, I don't know, 50 something or however much.
- 20:27Speaker 1: To which I think she got pretty mad and according
- 20:31Speaker 1: to the story, these are friends she has known for
- 20:32Speaker 1: a while. So she ranted about it on social media
- 20:35Speaker 1: and it when it really popped off. The internet is split,
- 20:38Speaker 1: by the way, because some people are saying, if they're
- 20:41Speaker 1: really your friends, they will understand and they will just
- 20:44Speaker 1: pay for you. OK, fine.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Some other people are saying, are you really telling us
- 20:47Speaker 1: the full story? Because it sounds like you already had
- 20:50Speaker 1: to maybe prepay a deposit for this place. Maybe, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: certain restaurants when you book, right, they're like, oh, we've
- 20:56Speaker 1: got to take a deposit fee or maybe it's per
- 20:59Speaker 1: packs and they already prepared for you. So cancellation has
- 21:02Speaker 1: to be done like 24 hours in advance. See, there's
- 21:04Speaker 1: a lot to unpack. I know, I know.
- 21:05Speaker 1: There are those reasons, or could it also be maybe
- 21:08Speaker 1: this particular lady is known to cancel and flick at
- 21:11Speaker 1: the last minute? Could be the friends got fed up. Hey,
- 21:14Speaker 1: you know what, enough. You pay. Yeah, like what's the context, right? Yeah, OK, well, we,
- 21:18Speaker 1: we want to bring this problem to us here in Singapore.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think that it happens a lot. In fact, I
- 21:22Speaker 1: have a story to share later. Don't need to bring
- 21:24Speaker 1: it's happening here in Singapore.
- 21:26Speaker 1: nobody is blogging about it. I, I, I have a
- 21:28Speaker 1: story to share later on, OK, and then you can
- 21:30Speaker 1: tell me your views as well, but give us a
- 21:32Speaker 1: call or drop us a message, 90050987 or 669-11987. We
- 21:40Speaker 1: would love for you to let us know, have you
- 21:42Speaker 1: ever found yourself in this situation before? Or rather, if
- 21:45Speaker 1: you're in this situation,
- 21:47Speaker 1: Do you think it's only right to offer to pay
- 21:49Speaker 1: for your share, especially if, you know, the booking required
- 22:05Speaker 1: a down payment already or credit card? I mean, because
- 22:06Speaker 1: my mom is really sick, I'll be like, guys, I'm
- 22:07Speaker 1: so sorry.
- 22:08Speaker 1: you know what, let me transfer you back my portion
- 22:11Speaker 1: because I am the one that will offer it. True, true.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I would have done that too. This applies to weddings too,
- 22:16Speaker 1: by the way. I'll tell you more about that in
- 22:18Speaker 1: just a while, but I think all quite similar thread
- 22:21Speaker 1: of conversation. Spill the tea. Um, let us know, give,
- 22:24Speaker 1: give us your stories 1st. 669-11987. What would you do
- 22:28Speaker 1: in this situation?
- 22:29Speaker 1: Would you offer to pay? If you were on the
- 22:31Speaker 1: flip side, would you expect your friend to pay if
- 22:33Speaker 1: they canceled last minute? Let us know. But my child
- 22:36Speaker 1: is sick. You can stay anonymous if you like, by
- 22:38Speaker 1: the way, you don't need to tell us your name.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It's OK. In exchange, we've got a lovely Japanese treat
- 22:43Speaker 1: coming your way, especially if you love izakaya. All thanks
- 22:46Speaker 1: to our friends over at Toriki Zoku. They want to
- 22:49Speaker 1: give you a $100 dining experience. Oh yeah, and I
- 22:53Speaker 1: heard that they are very famous for.
- 22:54Speaker 1: They're skewers, right? They're over at Raffles Place. Oh, so great.
- 22:58Speaker 1: If I'm not wrong, they have a grab and go
- 22:59Speaker 1: concept too, but we'll tell you more about it in
- 23:01Speaker 1: just a while. Ah, this is an age-old issue, right?
- 23:04Speaker 1: When it comes down to money and friends, it's always
- 23:07Speaker 1: sensitive sometimes, especially if you find yourself in less than
- 23:11Speaker 1: desirable situations like this one. I was bringing this up today. Uh,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I saw this floating about on socials and there were
- 23:17Speaker 1: so many comments on that. This woman,
- 23:20Speaker 1: Um, been with her friends for a long time, they
- 23:22Speaker 1: find it hard to meet. Finally, they, they, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: sat on a date, but her kid fell sick at
- 23:26Speaker 1: the very last minute that morning, so she pulled out,
- 23:29Speaker 1: but her friends insisted that she still had to pay
- 23:31Speaker 1: for her share.
- 23:32Speaker 1: To which she's not happy and she took to social
- 23:34Speaker 1: media to complain. I guess she's more than willing to
- 23:37Speaker 1: lose these friends at this point. I know, but at
- 23:39Speaker 1: this point there's so much to unpack here. Like I
- 23:42Speaker 1: know the context, one of 17 scenarios on why she's
- 23:46Speaker 1: behaving that way. Joakim and I have concluded that if
- 23:49Speaker 1: we were in her position, and let's just say, OK,
- 23:51Speaker 1: because we don't know the full story, right? Like why
- 23:53Speaker 1: they made her pay. Maybe it's because, like you mentioned,
- 23:56Speaker 1: it could be an Oakase style setting where you already
- 23:58Speaker 1: have to prepay a portion of your meal or
- 24:01Speaker 1: And that's why even if you cancel, you have to
- 24:04Speaker 1: cancel like 24 hours prior and we would then offer
- 24:08Speaker 1: to pay our share because we understand how difficult it
- 24:11Speaker 1: is responsible, we are good friends. I mean, it's painful lah,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you pay what, 100, 200, you don't eat anything.
- 24:18Speaker 1: It's like then you see all the insta stories, donations,
- 24:21Speaker 1: all the Jan restaurant food and all that. OK. I
- 24:25Speaker 1: want to say good morning to Selena on WhatsApp. Morning,
- 24:28Speaker 1: Sonia and Joakim. If my friend cancels on me at
- 24:30Speaker 1: the last minute and the restaurant requires advanced credit card booking,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I will try to call my other friends.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I get my own sister to replace. If I can't
- 24:40Speaker 1: find anyone, then that friend has to pay her share
- 24:43Speaker 1: since she canceled on the last minute and there's payment involved.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I actually, this happens, um, I think the Dua Lipa concert,
- 24:50Speaker 1: one of my friends couldn't make it back to Singapore
- 24:52Speaker 1: in time, and she only told us like the day off.
- 24:57Speaker 1: She told us the day off, so we were desperately
- 24:59Speaker 1: finding someone to buy over the ticket, OK, which, uh,
- 25:02Speaker 1: eventually we managed to, yeah, and one more coming in
- 25:05Speaker 1: from Joe. Joe says, Hey guys, like a wedding, even
- 25:08Speaker 1: if you can't attend, you still give the o. So
- 25:10Speaker 1: if the booking already is paid for before your cancellation,
- 25:13Speaker 1: then you should pay your share, even if you cannot attend.
- 25:16Speaker 1: But if it's not prepaid, then I don't see why
- 25:18Speaker 1: I have to pay for my.
- 25:19Speaker 1: my, my, my absence, but I can offer to organize
- 25:23Speaker 1: the next gathering. Yeah, get a drink, you know, so
- 25:27Speaker 1: I believe in a Plan B. So for example, if
- 25:29Speaker 1: we agree on plan A and I can't make it
- 25:30Speaker 1: for some strange reason, I will always give a Plan
- 25:33Speaker 1: B or a. Yes, yeah, I agree. I completely agree. Hey,
- 25:36Speaker 1: we're quite similar in that sense. 01 thing that we
- 25:40Speaker 1: can agree on.
- 25:41Speaker 1: OK, keep your calls coming through 669-11987. Now, I'm putting
- 25:46Speaker 1: you in a spot right now. Let's just say you're
- 25:48Speaker 1: meeting up with your friends and you had to pull
- 25:51Speaker 1: out at the very, very last minute, but they already
- 25:53Speaker 1: made a restaurant booking. Would you offer to pay for
- 25:56Speaker 1: your share, or do you think your friends would impose
- 25:59Speaker 1: that on you, or they would just absorb the cost?
- 26:01Speaker 1: What do we do here? Coming in from Nick, not exactly,
- 26:05Speaker 1: but football related, and as a bro, I know how
- 26:08Speaker 1: this feels. Morning, Sonia.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And Joakim. Interesting topic this morning. Such a situation, it
- 26:14Speaker 1: does happen. Just yesterday, our weekly football game, one of
- 26:18Speaker 1: the guys had to pull out at the very last
- 26:20Speaker 1: minute due to work. He offered to pay his share
- 26:22Speaker 1: of the pitch, but we decided not to collect from him.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Two reasons. He hasn't had a history of last-minute cancellations,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and number 2, he offered to pay. The key thing
- 26:32Speaker 1: for me is if this friend has a history of
- 26:34Speaker 1: such last-minute cancellations, if not, I'll usually take it as genuine,
- 26:38Speaker 1: but if otherwise, I will.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Insist they pay their share as a form of a
- 26:41Speaker 1: reminder to them because for footballer, when you want to
- 26:45Speaker 1: book the cage, right, you must get at least 10 people. Yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 1: there's a minimum, yeah, 5 on 5 and you all
- 26:50Speaker 1: can split it evenly. If 1 or 2 cancels last minute,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you mess up the whole algorithm, yeah, the whole formation, sorry,
- 26:59Speaker 1: and more people have to do more running. So, OK, yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I mean, I feel the pain for sure. Um, here's
- 27:06Speaker 1: one from me, OK.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Just before we get to me who's hanging on the
- 27:10Speaker 1: line right now. So, I'll keep it short. So as
- 27:13Speaker 1: you know, my wedding was very small, OK, especially the dinner. Um, the, the,
- 27:17Speaker 1: the church hall was much bigger, but the dinner was
- 27:19Speaker 1: very small. It's really for family and very close friends, right. So,
- 27:23Speaker 1: so I, I basically told my friends, I mean, if
- 27:26Speaker 1: you are married or in a very serious relationship, you
- 27:29Speaker 1: can bring your plus one, and these are for my
- 27:31Speaker 1: very close friends only. In fact, some of my close
- 27:34Speaker 1: friends offered not to bring their husband. They said, don't
- 27:35Speaker 1: eat lah, don't bring him.
- 27:38Speaker 1: They were like, it's OK, I want to have a girls' night.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I was like, OK, sure, um, but there was this.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And I love them so much. I mean, all, all
- 27:46Speaker 1: my friends that were there, I love them so much,
- 27:48Speaker 1: but sometimes you can't control whether or not they may
- 27:51Speaker 1: have a flaky partner or something might have happened, you know.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I can't say, yeah, yeah. So anyway, um, one of
- 28:00Speaker 1: their partners actually bailed at the very last minute, like
- 28:04Speaker 1: 2 days before. OK, and, and the problem, OK, the
- 28:08Speaker 1: thing is I'm not like a royal family.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Something where I have like 400 seats and you know, OK,
- 28:13Speaker 1: never mind, one person don't show up, it's OK. I
- 28:15Speaker 1: close one eye. It's not like that. It was like
- 28:18Speaker 1: 100 paxs and every person that RSVP'd yes or no
- 28:23Speaker 1: and said like, OK, maybe I'm not coming, I can
- 28:25Speaker 1: then give it to someone else, you know, because it
- 28:27Speaker 1: was that tight and I couldn't even invite some people
- 28:30Speaker 1: that I wanted to, right? Was there a reason why
- 28:32Speaker 1: this bailed? OK, no, there wasn't. I mean, I didn't
- 28:36Speaker 1: quite get.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Any reason at all, but this person is known to
- 28:40Speaker 1: be kind of flaky in some ways, OK. So thankfully,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I had a couple of friends who were on like my,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I don't want to say backup list, but uh uh
- 28:49Speaker 1: like I really wanted to invite them. I really did.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I really did, OK. But they were categorized under, you know,
- 28:55Speaker 1: a category that, OK, I will invite if I can. Yeah. Thankfully,
- 28:58Speaker 1: they were understanding enough and they actually showed up. Yeah,
- 29:01Speaker 1: so then I managed to fill up all, uh, all
- 29:04Speaker 1: the seats.
- 29:05Speaker 1: But that person didn't even give an ang bow actually.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I mean, not that I'm expecting it. You didn't come.
- 29:11Speaker 1: It's OK. I didn't expect it, but I was actually
- 29:14Speaker 1: quite anxious about it because I didn't want these friends
- 29:16Speaker 1: to think like, oh, I only invite you at the
- 29:18Speaker 1: very last minute when a seat freed up, you know.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I was, I was very honest about it, and I
- 29:22Speaker 1: just told them upfront what happened, and they said, no problem,
- 29:24Speaker 1: we'll be there. OK, this flaky person, was it a
- 29:28Speaker 1: friend or a friend's partner. OK.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Never attending any other gatherings anymore. See this is why
- 29:42Speaker 1: you are you apologize on behalf, my friend did, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I understand.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And I will never make it an issue, but we go.
- 29:49Speaker 1: It is what it is. Anyway, we've got R on
- 29:51Speaker 1: the line right now. OK, so what are your thoughts?
- 29:53Speaker 2: So recently,
- 29:54Speaker 2: me and my friends, it's not dining, we were supposed
- 29:57Speaker 2: to go Paris like overseas and the.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Then the whole war thing happened, right? And we were
- 30:06Speaker 2: like 2 weeks out and, um, some of my friends
- 30:09Speaker 2: are flying to Dubai to Paris, and they didn't feel comfortable. Uh,
- 30:15Speaker 2: so there were 4 of us, 4 girls, um, and
- 30:17Speaker 2: 2 of them were flying to Paris while the 2
- 30:19Speaker 2: of us were doing direct. And one of the, the, the,
- 30:24Speaker 2: the 2 of the girls who were flying to Dubai
- 30:27Speaker 2: decided to pull out at the last.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Because she decided to pull out, you know, there were
- 30:31Speaker 2: a lot of bookings, including reservations. I, I mean, we
- 30:35Speaker 2: are really very good friends and eventually we, uh, the
- 30:39Speaker 2: three of us who were still going ahead, we had
- 30:41Speaker 2: an open discussion with her and she was very game lah.
- 30:44Speaker 2: She said, yeah, because she made the decision. So she,
- 30:47Speaker 2: she said she's fine to pay whatever, uh, is required
- 30:50Speaker 2: to pay, but we even went to Moulin Rouge, so
- 30:53Speaker 2: she had to give up the Moulin Rouge.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Dinner and everything, yeah, which was like a couple of
- 30:59Speaker 2: $100 but she, she valued like safety over all these
- 31:04Speaker 2: dining experience and things like that. So I thought I
- 31:06Speaker 2: wanted to share that. At the end of the day,
- 31:08Speaker 2: as like responsible adults, we all make our own decision
- 31:12Speaker 2: and based on our decisions, we just have to face
- 31:15Speaker 2: the consequences lah. So, the happy ending was, uh, whatever
- 31:19Speaker 2: we can cancel, we refund, we did it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And the remaining she tried to claim by her insurance
- 31:24Speaker 2: and I think she got back close to 85% of
- 31:27Speaker 2: it.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's actually a good idea. You know what, nobody
- 31:30Speaker 1: will fault your friend for this because it's really a
- 31:32Speaker 1: safety issue. It's a real concern, yeah. Can I ask
- 31:36Speaker 1: you a question? So for you, how much did the
- 31:39Speaker 1: entire trip?
- 31:39Speaker 1: To Paris.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Interestingly,
- 31:42Speaker 2: um, it's not as bad as I thought it is. Uh,
- 31:45Speaker 2: it's almost close to how much I would spend in Japan.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Just that the spending like what I, I, I, I
- 31:50Speaker 2: buy my shopping was the one that really was.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I was gonna say, is this number before or after
- 31:55Speaker 1: the Chanel bags?
- 31:58Speaker 1: We have one coming in from an anonymous texter. Sure.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Hey Sonia and Joakim, what do you think of the situation?
- 32:04Speaker 1: My sister does not give my parents any single cent
- 32:08Speaker 1: of allowance and hardly visits or contacts them, yet she
- 32:13Speaker 1: still claims her parents' relief on the IRAS.
- 32:19Speaker 1: How would you feel? Question mark.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Anonymous, I'm just gonna sit here and drink my tea
- 32:24Speaker 1: and reflect on this text message for a while. I
- 32:26Speaker 1: think this is the reason why we are relieved we
- 32:28Speaker 1: don't have siblings siblings. We don't have siblings we have
- 32:33Speaker 1: our own set of problems. So, but hey, Anonymous, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 1: I hope this, you know, allowed you to just ran
- 32:38Speaker 1: a little bit and get your frustrations out.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Hopefully you've managed to communicate with your sister on this.
- 32:47Speaker 1: What frustrated. I don't think any communication has been done.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Oh man, it's OK. You know what? At the end
- 32:53Speaker 1: of the day, you know that you're doing good and
- 32:55Speaker 1: if you are supporting your parents, like good on you. OK,
- 32:57Speaker 1: good on you. Like there's gonna be good karma around
- 32:59Speaker 1: the corner. Alright, and texts coming in at 669-119.
- 33:05Speaker 1: 87 or 90050987. Yeah, we're gonna head back to the
- 33:09Speaker 1: phone lines in a bit with Evan hanging on as well,
- 33:12Speaker 1: so we'll be right back. Time for the last couple
- 33:13Speaker 1: of messages and calls here. The question is, if you
- 33:16Speaker 1: were to be meeting a group of friends and one
- 33:19Speaker 1: person bails at the very last minute, but you already
- 33:21Speaker 1: made the booking, and perhaps there's a down payment already paid,
- 33:24Speaker 1: you know, a deposit, I mean, will that absent person
- 33:28Speaker 1: still need to pay for his or her share?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Oh, we've got Evan on the line right now. Evan,
- 33:32Speaker 1: good morning. Tell us what we would do. It really depends.
- 33:35Speaker 1: If it's an O restaurant, I would pay for my,
- 33:38Speaker 1: you know, share, but that would be very sad. But
- 33:40Speaker 1: I'm quite sure my friends are understanding enough to help me. Evan,
- 33:44Speaker 1: so you have friends who eat with you? Oh yeah, sometimes. Wow, Evan,
- 33:49Speaker 1: how do we be your friends? And how young are
- 33:52Speaker 1: you this year, by the way?
- 33:55Speaker 1: you know what, Joakim, I don't think I had my
- 33:56Speaker 1: first Oakase like experience till I was an adult. I
- 34:00Speaker 1: had my first Oakase at 36. That was 2 years ago. Yes,
- 34:02Speaker 1: it was with you. OK. Evan, you're so lucky. What,
- 34:07Speaker 1: what's your favorite like dish at the Oakase restaurant? Like
- 34:10Speaker 1: do you like the sushi or the cooked food or
- 34:15Speaker 1: like what fish do you like? Did you go with
- 34:16Speaker 1: your family or my mom brought me with my friends.
- 34:19Speaker 1: So cute. I love that. How do we be her
- 34:22Speaker 1: adopted children. Evan, thank you so much for your call.
- 34:25Speaker 1: You have a great September holidays, OK? Take care, Evan.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Thank you. Bye. We're just about done with your messages
- 34:31Speaker 1: and your calls. Sorry if we couldn't read yours out
- 34:33Speaker 1: or accept your call, but the question today sparked off
- 34:35Speaker 1: quite a lot of conversation. If you were to be
- 34:38Speaker 1: meeting a group of friends and at the very last minute,
- 34:41Speaker 1: one person pulls out for some reason or other.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Will this person still be subjected to pay for his
- 34:48Speaker 1: or her share? I'm assuming especially if you've already made
- 34:50Speaker 1: a reservation that might need a credit card hold. I
- 34:53Speaker 1: haven't encountered this situation, but I know that if I
- 34:56Speaker 1: were to make a last minute cancellation and if such
- 34:59Speaker 1: a thing were to happen, I'll offer to pay my share. Wait,
- 35:01Speaker 1: you mean your friends have never, I'm sure there have
- 35:05Speaker 1: been one or two groups where like someone bailed at
- 35:08Speaker 1: the very last minute. No, no, no, no, no, I
- 35:10Speaker 1: think we're all OK. Oh, me on a date.
- 35:14Speaker 1: This happened a few years ago, at one of those
- 35:17Speaker 1: restaurants that they take a deposit, right? Yeah, yeah. Unfortunately,
- 35:20Speaker 1: last minute she had to stay back at work to
- 35:22Speaker 1: do more, and I totally understand it works, but she
- 35:25Speaker 1: was very sweet about it, and, I'm so sorry. You
- 35:27Speaker 1: know what, I know this restaurant takes a deposit. Let
- 35:30Speaker 1: me transfer you half my share. Oh, so she offered, OK, yeah,
- 35:32Speaker 1: and then she offered a Plan B. Did you go
- 35:35Speaker 1: in the end? Yeah, we went to go and meet.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I went, uh, somewhere else. So you basically you didn't
- 35:39Speaker 1: go for.
- 35:39Speaker 1: That booking either you all just paid the penalty and
- 35:42Speaker 1: forfeited the whole thing, OK, because if I were to
- 35:45Speaker 1: go alone, I don't mind, but it's a lot of food. Yeah, it's, yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 1: I know, and sometimes certain food-related experiences are meant to
- 35:52Speaker 1: be shared. Like the moment is meant to be shared,
- 35:54Speaker 1: you know, and they had a bit of a like
- 35:56Speaker 1: a minimum order OK, OK. Oh man, just order one
- 36:02Speaker 1: bottle of sakela, one bottle of wine.
- 36:05Speaker 1: That's it. I'm sure you meet the minimum. More wine
- 36:08Speaker 1: than sake. There we go. Anyway, um, only one person
- 36:11Speaker 1: can walk away with this wonderful Japanese dining experience here today,
- 36:15Speaker 1: and it goes to
- 36:18Speaker 1: Congratulations, this one's yours. To catch up with all the
- 36:21Speaker 1: stories and the laughter and everything, me listen and Spotify
- 36:24Speaker 1: is the place to be later. We're sending you over
- 36:26Speaker 1: to Toriki Torikizoku Express at One Raffles Place. It's the
- 36:31Speaker 1: first ever grab and go kiosk concept globally, and Toriki
- 36:36Speaker 1: Zoku is Japan's number one yakitori brand with close to
- 36:40Speaker 1: Over 700 outlets worldwide. So they know exactly what they're doing.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Trust us when we say that. So please go ahead
- 36:47Speaker 1: and enjoy yourself over there, you know, maybe bring your
- 36:50Speaker 1: friends that you went to Paris with and uh yeah
- 36:52Speaker 1: and catch up about that. Hopefully I'm saying this correctly,
- 36:55Speaker 1: the Kamahiri Kahi, made with the flavorful Japanese clay pot
- 37:00Speaker 1: rice and chicken alongside its signature yakitori.
- 37:03Speaker 1: So they got snack cups and bento sets. So for example,
- 37:06Speaker 1: the CBD is really crowded, you can grab and go
- 37:08Speaker 1: somewhere else and eat. Perfect. Yeah, what a great one.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I must say, Netflix they've been doing very interesting things
- 37:15Speaker 1: as of late. All sorts of new series. They're adding
- 37:18Speaker 1: some films past and present to their catalog. A lot
- 37:21Speaker 1: of true crime as well. So very soon, I think, uh,
- 37:25Speaker 1: our friends.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Or rather Lisa, Lalisa, right? She has a Lalisa documentary
- 37:32Speaker 1: that will be out in cinemas October 12th to 17th.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And it's gonna be on Netflix too I wonder whether
- 37:39Speaker 1: they bring it on board to Netflix for like the
- 37:42Speaker 1: documentary series and all that because uh the internet is
- 37:46Speaker 1: very split about one particular documentary.
- 37:49Speaker 1: What? The Ray G one? Oh yes, yes, yes, yeah,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I keep seeing clips of it on TikTok now. And
- 37:54Speaker 1: I'm on the side of what has this woman done
- 37:58Speaker 1: to deserve a Netflix documentary. I think, you know, it
- 38:04Speaker 1: did spark off worldwide conversation, I guess, right?
- 38:08Speaker 1: And um if there's anything that came out of that,
- 38:12Speaker 1: people are saying, may the love between her and her
- 38:16Speaker 1: husband find everyone because he like adores her, by the way,
- 38:20Speaker 1: if you've watched some of the clips. Can we not
- 38:22Speaker 1: use a better example?
- 38:24Speaker 1: That that that's my only I don't know that I'll
- 38:27Speaker 1: give publicly on air. I haven't watched it yet. Um,
- 38:30Speaker 1: the fact that she made it up there to an
- 38:31Speaker 1: international stage is, is not just her doing what, you
- 38:34Speaker 1: know what I mean? It's a, it's a whole, it
- 38:36Speaker 1: takes many moving parts to push a person up to
- 38:40Speaker 1: an Olympic stage. So very much rig it la.
- 38:43Speaker 1: OK, hey, this one conversation for another day, OK? We're
- 38:48Speaker 1: not even from that country, so let's just not make
- 38:50Speaker 1: comments about its your connections correctly. Joe, if I use
- 38:54Speaker 1: my connections to make my way into the Olympics, we
- 38:57Speaker 1: will just fail, OK? But it's exactly what she did.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But you'll get a Netflix documentary.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Of what not to do, right? OK, then you tell
- 39:06Speaker 1: me which sport would I represent?
- 39:10Speaker 1: Hey, don't be so bad lah, just pick one. Which sport, yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Hers was like in the dance category, OK, what sport?
- 39:18Speaker 1: Come on, just give me one, give me one.
- 39:21Speaker 1: There's so many I want to name. Just name one,
- 39:24Speaker 1: the top one that comes to your mind. OK, humor me. OK,
- 39:26Speaker 1: humor me. Discus throwing. What's that?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Dude, I can't do that. I can't discuss. OK, OK.
- 39:34Speaker 1: I want to see is that the gymnastics or what? No, sorry,
- 39:36Speaker 1: it's a track and field event track and field. OK. OK.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I want to see you do a javelin throw. This one,
- 39:43Speaker 1: you know, the meme of the guy that runs to
- 39:44Speaker 1: the bar, he just turns around and walks off.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I'll be that guy, OK, I'll be that guy. Or weightlifting.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Why you pick all the most difficult ones for me?
- 39:55Speaker 1: Because I want to see it. That's the whole point, Javelin.
- 40:01Speaker 1: I literally can't even wrap my mind around. At least
- 40:03Speaker 1: give me gymnastics or something, maybe not so bad rhythmic gymnastics. OK, OK,
- 40:08Speaker 1: that one. I can do the gymnastics, but the rhythm
- 40:10Speaker 1: is not there. Get your Simone Biles. Come on.
- 40:13Speaker 1: It's not gonna work. It's in hyphen Bloody Paradise right
- 40:16Speaker 1: here on 987, Singapore's number one hit music station. I
- 40:19Speaker 1: gotta say, their tracks are getting better and better. Really just,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you can envision it at like any club or any
- 40:25Speaker 1: party place. This song sounds like it could be remixed
- 40:27Speaker 1: with Break. Oh, like an old school, old school track. Yeah,
- 40:32Speaker 1: it's giving a bit of that. Anyway, time for some
- 40:34Speaker 1: good food news. At last, here we go. 123.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Good news, food news. Sonia with the good food news. OK,
- 40:44Speaker 1: give it to us, Ms. Chu. So, um, this particular
- 40:48Speaker 1: piece of news was met with quite a lot of
- 40:50Speaker 1: disappointed people, especially if they have been going there for
- 40:53Speaker 1: a long time and if they live around the River
- 40:55Speaker 1: Valley area, it could almost be like their, their neighborhood
- 40:58Speaker 1: cafe in a way. OK. Yeah, it's Patisserie Pantzler, P
- 41:03Speaker 1: A N T L E R.
- 41:05Speaker 1: I always see it and um it's right near, you
- 41:07Speaker 1: know where Valley Point is?
- 41:11Speaker 1: Do you know where Valley Point is, the mall? OK,
- 41:14Speaker 1: the silence is deafening. When you say River Valley, right?
- 41:16Speaker 1: I think Mohammad Sultan. Yes, OK, fair, fair. That's where
- 41:21Speaker 1: most of the dining experiences are maybe you would not
- 41:29Speaker 1: have gone to like this area of River Valley because
- 41:32Speaker 1: it's a bit more residential, I think, and the mall
- 41:35Speaker 1: around there like Valley Point and even these cafes that
- 41:38Speaker 1: are just below.
- 41:40Speaker 1: They, they serve, I'm guessing mostly the people that live
- 41:44Speaker 1: around there in a way. But hey, a new place
- 41:46Speaker 1: for me to explore. Well, it almost didn't happen because
- 41:49Speaker 1: they were supposed to close on the 30th of August, OK.
- 41:53Speaker 1: They announced the closure. They've been there for like 12 years,
- 41:57Speaker 1: by the way.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Thankfully, they were saved from closure days before the final
- 42:03Speaker 1: day of operations. It's a Japanese French patisserie, if you've
- 42:07Speaker 1: never tried it before. Um, they were very, very upset
- 42:10Speaker 1: to say goodbye, but apparently they managed to find an investor.
- 42:15Speaker 1: They did not disclose the details of the deal at
- 42:17Speaker 1: this point.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I think the transaction is still ongoing and it's going
- 42:21Speaker 1: through the legal and admin processes right now, but it
- 42:24Speaker 1: is happening. Like they got bought over by a new owner.
- 42:27Speaker 1: The intention is for it to stay at River Valley
- 42:30Speaker 1: area and continue operating as it is today, um, but
- 42:33Speaker 1: they also did not reveal who the new owner is.
- 42:36Speaker 1: So a lot of mystery. The way you make it
- 42:37Speaker 1: sound like I'm very much might be the case. the Avengers. Yeah,
- 42:45Speaker 1: it could be someone who is passionate.
- 42:47Speaker 1: About F&B, someone who is a regular there maybe and
- 42:50Speaker 1: who has the funds to help come in with a
- 42:53Speaker 1: big investment and find a new opportunity for them, hopefully, yeah.
- 42:57Speaker 1: There we go. Congratulations. Look, I'm, I'm glad because there
- 43:03Speaker 1: have been so much news about, you know, your, your
- 43:06Speaker 1: wonderful F&B outlets here in Singapore, especially those more independent
- 43:09Speaker 1: ones like locally started, not those big chains that have
- 43:13Speaker 1: been closing, and not all of them are lucky enough to.
- 43:16Speaker 1: be able to find a last-minute investor. OK, so to
- 43:18Speaker 1: give you the exact address, it's 474 River Valley Road,
- 43:24Speaker 1: open Tuesdays to Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Yeah,
- 43:27Speaker 1: so Monday is off day, yeah. Right. Good news for
- 43:32Speaker 1: the people that live around there. I was just saying
- 43:34Speaker 1: earlier that this year has been a very interesting year
- 43:36Speaker 1: for us here in Singapore and our fellow Singaporeans overseas.
- 43:40Speaker 1: I mean, on social media alone, so many public happenings
- 43:44Speaker 1: and some lives.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Extreme drama also still going on. This one, yeah, we're invested. Yeah,
- 43:49Speaker 1: but have you read about the pyramid scheme? Dude, that's
- 43:53Speaker 1: gripping the nation, I think. And what the 52 Singaporeans
- 43:57Speaker 1: that were arrested in China. Now we're like wondering who
- 43:59Speaker 1: are these people? Do we know? It's a rabbit hole,
- 44:02Speaker 1: you know. I'm very sure we at least know one
- 44:06Speaker 1: person who has had interest or expressed interest in going
- 44:08Speaker 1: on this pyramid scheme to invest money. Can I, can
- 44:11Speaker 1: I just ask, these people, are they victims themselves?
- 44:14Speaker 1: Did they know that it was gonna be like a
- 44:16Speaker 1: scam sort of situation? Maybe or maybe not. Maybe they
- 44:21Speaker 1: are the ones knowing that it's a pyramid scheme. They
- 44:23Speaker 1: know how it works and that's why they want to
- 44:24Speaker 1: get as many people to pump in money so they
- 44:26Speaker 1: can take the money and go abscond or, you know,
- 44:30Speaker 1: enjoy the benefits. So yeah, um, loads of rumors are
- 44:34Speaker 1: circulating on Reddit, on hardware zones, and I'm also following
- 44:38Speaker 1: the news very closely to see.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Are there any prominent figures involved? Well, there was one
- 44:46Speaker 1: article that I saw something about a actor or something,
- 44:51Speaker 1: but I don't know who this person is. It's not really,
- 44:54Speaker 1: not an active actor right now the threads and all that,
- 44:59Speaker 1: more or less the person's name has been revealed already.
- 45:02Speaker 1: I don't think it's doxing per se because the way
- 45:04Speaker 1: it was reported.
- 45:06Speaker 1: It's not that hard to find lah. Oh, I mean,
- 45:08Speaker 1: I didn't look into it. I was just like, you
- 45:09Speaker 1: know what, this is going to take too much of
- 45:10Speaker 1: my energy. Again, Singaporean media, you guys need to stop
- 45:15Speaker 1: loosely throwing the word celebrity as well as influencer. It's
- 45:19Speaker 1: a rich bait. It's a rich bait, yeah. But, but
- 45:22Speaker 1: to be fair to the press, he or she was
- 45:25Speaker 1: described as a Singaporean celebrity, yeah, so they were just
- 45:28Speaker 1: reporting what was said about that person, yeah, right.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Well, I guess this is a case that is constantly
- 45:34Speaker 1: unfolding and this is just the tip of the iceberg
- 45:36Speaker 1: for now. So please tell your parents, your grandparents, and
- 45:41Speaker 1: even yourself, protect your money. It is not wrong to
- 45:43Speaker 1: be skeptical. Do your research first, you know, before even
- 45:47Speaker 1: investing in anything. We work so hard for our money, right? Yeah,
- 45:50Speaker 1: and sometimes you're like, oh yeah, but you need to
- 45:52Speaker 1: make your money work harder for you. No, no, but
- 45:54Speaker 1: in the right places, I think consult someone who knows
- 45:57Speaker 1: what they're doing. All these YouTube finance gurus.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Don't give them two minutes of your time, is it? No,
- 46:02Speaker 1: but some, some of them, I have to say, do
- 46:05Speaker 1: some interesting content and breakdowns. Not all of them are bad.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Not all of them. I agree. I agree. Thank you
- 46:10Speaker 1: for joining us here today. We had such a blast
- 46:11Speaker 1: on the show. Be sure to catch up with it
- 46:13Speaker 1: on Me Listen on Spotify. We are counting down to
- 46:15Speaker 1: 10 a.m. September 10th, Singapore time. That's the Apple event. Wait,
- 46:20Speaker 1: hold on. It's, so it's actually 9th of September in
- 46:23Speaker 1: the US. That was the date. So that means it
- 46:26Speaker 1: is Thursday night. Thursday morning if you want to.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, Thursday morning slash kind of night for us, right? Yeah,
- 46:31Speaker 1: 1 a.m. and it's slated to last around 90 minutes.
- 46:35Speaker 1: So in 90 minutes, how will Apple break the internet again? I,
- 46:39Speaker 1: I'm excited because the fact that we wake up so early,
- 46:42Speaker 1: we often are the first people to like see what
- 46:45Speaker 1: went down unless you're up late. We'll get all the
- 46:47Speaker 1: press releases, but I want to stay up late because
- 46:49Speaker 1: there is a rumor, a huge rumor that they finally
- 46:53Speaker 1: could release an iPhone Pro Max in red.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Is this about the red series or no, no, no, totally.
- 47:02Speaker 1: To be honest, I'm not gonna lie. I'm quite excited
- 47:04Speaker 1: about the flip phone situation. Let's see whether it actually
- 47:06Speaker 1: happens or not. I'll go with. I don't know whether
- 47:08Speaker 1: it will happen, but the flip, yeah. OK, um, let's
- 47:11Speaker 1: find out, of course, we'll keep you in the loop.
