- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to this episode of the Daily Rider Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: One of the most famous movies of all time, and what many consider to be the greatest movie of all time, is 1941's Citizen Kane, starring Orson Wells.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: While Citizen Kane is certainly a great movie, and it's one of my personal favorites, it tends to overshadow Wells' other great movies.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: One of those is called The Third Man, and this was a movie released in 1949 and starring Orson Wells and Joseph Cotton, among others.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: The Third Man is a British film noir set in post-war Vienna, and the story centers around a writer named Holly Martins, played by Joseph Cotton, who's come to Vienna to work for his friend Harry Lyme, who is played by Orson Wells.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: However, when Holly Martins arrives in Vienna, he discovers that his friend Harry Lyme has been killed in an auto accident.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: He's suspicious of the circumstances and decides to stay in Vienna and investigate.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Orson Wells doesn't even appear until halfway through the movie.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Holly Martins is stumbling around the streets of Vienna and he sees a man standing in a doorway mostly obscured by shadows, and he thinks the man in the doorway has been tailing him, so he tries to coax him to come out.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Suddenly a woman turns on an apartment light above the street and Martens sees that it's his friend Harry Lime.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: After a few moments, the light goes out again, and Harry Lime steps out of the shadows and goes running off down the street with Martens chasing him.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: It's one of the most famous and enigmatic character entrances in the history of cinema.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Holly Martens was the writer character in The Third Man, but ironically, a lot of real life writers actually mirror Harry Lime.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Harry Lime was the guy who loved to stay hidden in the shadows, and he didn't even make his appearance until halfway through the movie.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I find that a lot of writers, especially those in midlife or later, prefer to stay hidden in the shadows.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: They have a lot of fear.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: They say things like, What if I put my work out there?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: What if I step out of the shadows and show the world my talent?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Will people like me or will they reject me?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: What happens if I succeed?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: What if?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: What if?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: What if?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Well, the truth of the matter is that you're never going to know until you decide to step out of the shadows and find out for yourself.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Most people stay hidden in the doorways of life, never stepping out into the brave, beautiful world that lies just beyond their comfort and safety.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: But when you do, when you step out of those shadows, you'll find yourself in for the ride of a lifetime.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question Have you stepped out of the shadows as a writer, and are you willing to make yourself known so you can impact others with your creative work?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
