- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is ATC presents there, but he Rambles
- 0:21were a couple of friends review Korean dramas.
- 0:23I'm here today with a special guest.
- 0:25It is Nina from Kpop bookshelf. Hey, what's up, hey Hey, how is
- 0:30it going? It's going well.
- 0:32We were talking before we started recording and I am so
- 0:35excited to have you on. I was telling you that I'm a
- 0:38huge fan of your podcast that I've heard a bunch of episodes
- 0:42and my favorite one actually it's like the most of divisive
- 0:46one I guess. Is the 1982 like the feminist
- 0:49Pros series that you did. It was like a series of like
- 0:52three back-to-back podcast episodes and it was it like made
- 0:56me very upset, right? So that book.
- 0:59Kim ji Young In 1982 was a very controversial book in Korea and
- 1:03I just found it so interesting. Because by American feminists
- 1:06rhetoric standards, I don't think it was all that, all that
- 1:10crazy of a book or like outrageous of a book, but it
- 1:13really hit a nerve in Korea. It hit a nerve and me too
- 1:16especially because your podcast is so well-researched.
- 1:19And so you were bringing in a lot of other stats.
- 1:21And I was like, oh my God, I was getting mad right?
- 1:25Yeah, but I love your podcast and I'm so excited to have you
- 1:29on. I Was actually a little bit
- 1:30afraid because you're so soft-spoken and your podcast and
- 1:34I was like that's not my real life, right?
- 1:36Right, right. We were talking before and I was
- 1:37like, oh my gosh, he's so like animated, it's great.
- 1:40So I was worried that you would be very chill when I got on this
- 1:44call with you but you're not you're amazing.
- 1:47And again, your solo podcasting is very difficult.
- 1:51I admire you so much for doing that.
- 1:52I don't know if I've ever done a solo pod before, but it's hard.
- 1:56It's hard to keep it. It's hard to talk to yourself
- 1:59and Like usually recording late at night which accounts for why
- 2:02I'm a little bit more soft spoken in that podcast because
- 2:04it's always like 2 a.m. and I live in apartment building.
- 2:07So I don't want to disturb everybody else, so, but yeah,
- 2:11yeah, I'm Hispanic. So I feel like I'm always
- 2:13yelling in the mic and then Rico's like, you got to, you got
- 2:17to back away from the mic, like he's giving me all these
- 2:19pointers and I'm like, whatever just like, let's go, I
- 2:23definitely can get very loud as well.
- 2:26Yeah, it is so nice to see you and meet you for the first time
- 2:29in an Effort to just get to know you better.
- 2:31I know that some people may not have listened to your podcast.
- 2:33So what is like your kdrama background before we jump into
- 2:38this review that we're going to do today which is on Navi?
- 2:40Lera not be Larry. Yeah.
- 2:42So my kdrama background actually started with J.
- 2:45Dramas. I used to take Japanese classes
- 2:48language classes at a Japanese school that was after I visited
- 2:51Japan. And I first started watching Jay
- 2:53dramas and I was like these are ridiculous.
- 2:55I love it. It's like so weird because some
- 2:57of the first ones I saw were very bizarre story.
- 3:01And then from, there are my cousins who were very big Kpop
- 3:04bands. They were like, you got to get
- 3:06into Kpop. I was like, no, I wasn't like
- 3:08into it at all yet. And so then Chi from Exo is in a
- 3:11Japanese Drama. Oh, forget it.
- 3:13Yeah. And so I was like, holy via.
- 3:15I saw, I took one look at him and I was like, okay, maybe
- 3:17maybe I'm a mature guy is beautiful.
- 3:21Exactly. And I forgot the name of it now.
- 3:23It's like something about spring.
- 3:24But anyway, so I watched Chi and I kind of had like a very vague
- 3:29awareness of Who he was and then my cousins were like, are you
- 3:31ready now to watch kdramas and get into like Korean stuff?
- 3:34And so, I watched, you know, everyone's gateway drug to
- 3:37kdramas Boys Over Flowers. Yeah.
- 3:40Yeah. And I was like wow this is very
- 3:45interesting to put it one way because that since I think such
- 3:48as I think when you re-watch it or when you think about it
- 3:50you're like what did I want? Just watch like what a fever
- 3:53dream. So yeah it's like really weird
- 3:57but yeah so that's my kdrama history.
- 4:00Of it. Yeah, I think you have here.
- 4:02My Odyssey. My mr.
- 4:03As well. Yeah.
- 4:05So is that like a drama that you really admire?
- 4:08I do. I loved the acting in my ah,
- 4:11just she also knows my mr. And I like kind of now, it's so
- 4:15funny because Boys, Over Flowers and some of the Jade early J.
- 4:18Dramas, I watch you're nothing like these kind of more serious
- 4:22almost like police procedurals or like Mysteries and not that I
- 4:26Majesty is that but imagine she's like a very quiet.
- 4:29Very The Motions are kind of on their face that there's not a
- 4:33lot of a lot of talking because the both main characters are
- 4:36kind of quiet people and I you and his name is Casey with the
- 4:40actor who is from parasite. Yes.
- 4:42I just she and Majesty was so so good.
- 4:45And he's going like everything. So, I love that.
- 4:49Yeah. You.
- 4:50I mean, you would never know this, but we just recorded an
- 4:53episode for my mr. For season 2 and like it hasn't
- 4:57been released yet like we're talking now.
- 4:59The episode. Isn't out yet.
- 5:00So you would never know but like I like cried during that show
- 5:05and I cried on the episode as well.
- 5:08So I'm really hit a nerve for me.
- 5:11And the show that we're going to talk about.
- 5:13Now is also one of those shows that like hit a really it hit me
- 5:17right in the feels and the last episode like completely wrecked
- 5:22me. So we'll get going on it.
- 5:24Thank you so much for talking about your kdrama background
- 5:27feel like everyone is like oh yeah Boys Over Flowers.
- 5:30Oh God, what a drama. Okay.
- 5:32So before we get started, we'll do some housekeeping.

- 6:13So we're going to get going on our review of Novel era.
- 6:17Would you want to do the honors of reading the Asian Wiki
- 6:19synopsis, I can read. It's kind of long, but if you
- 6:22want to read it, be my guest. Yes.
- 6:24I will read it. Okay, my glasses.
- 6:27Oh, okay. So So the wiki synopsis Asian
- 6:31Wiki stops is shim. Stock tool has had a lifelong
- 6:34dream of Performing ballet due to life situations.
- 6:37He put aside his dream of becoming a ballet dancer and
- 6:41worked a normal job to support his family.
- 6:43He is now 70 years old and retired.
- 6:46Now, shim doc tool makes the decision to pursue his dream,
- 6:49again. He joins a ballet company to
- 6:51learn ballet and there he meets each a dog.
- 6:54Each Hook is a 23 year old man. His mother was a ballet dancer,
- 6:57but she died from a disease when he was young.
- 7:00Eat. Eric learned that he has a
- 7:02talent for ballet. But after pursuing belly, he
- 7:04barely has contact with his father and he is a hard time
- 7:07supporting himself financially at this time.
- 7:10Shin duck Jewel appears in his life.
- 7:12Yes. So thank you so much for reading
- 7:14the synopsis novel era aired originally from March to April
- 7:1820-21. So it's a pretty recent drama.
- 7:20We are in the year 2022 right now for the future purposes
- 7:25because it's hard to tell this show is 12 episodes long, not
- 7:2916. Gene.
- 7:30And it's directed by Honda quoi and he directed Squad 38.
- 7:34Among other things, the show is written by hon and Jim in, which
- 7:38are they are. The writers of the webcomic.
- 7:41This was originally a webtoon and then the screenwriter is he
- 7:46on me? And she wrote tunnel from 2017
- 7:50which is good to know the show Stars.
- 7:52Pocking One as seemed old dog tool and he is a very well-known
- 7:58actor. He's been in the business Ever.
- 8:00He's had. He has nearly 30 credits to his
- 8:03name for just movies, and that includes the odd family zombie
- 8:08on sale from 2019, I recently watched that movie for the first
- 8:11time, it's on Amazon Prime right now, really?
- 8:14Yes. He's, it's a zombie movie, but
- 8:17it's a comedy. So definitely give it a watch.
- 8:19It's funny. And he's also in Miss Granny
- 8:22from 2014. Also, very funny.
- 8:24I think that's on Netflix right now, he for TV.
- 8:28He has nearly 40 credits to His name, including the present is
- 8:31beautiful from this year, this is coming out this year in April
- 8:36and then School 2021. He's also in that show song
- 8:40plays each attic and he is kind of well known now for being an
- 8:46IT guy, I would say and he was first seen in the liar and his
- 8:51lover that was like his breakout role in 2017.
- 8:54And then he went on to do love, alarm seasons one and two on
- 8:57Netflix. I personally Not recommend.
- 9:00Love alarm. Only did I?
- 9:02Yeah I did not like levels are, did you like love wrong?
- 9:05Did you see have it on my list? Oh okay.
- 9:07SLI have gotten to it yet. So okay, just saying he's at
- 9:10that. Yeah no I wouldn't recommend
- 9:12love alarm. He was in Sweet Home which is
- 9:14also a Netflix original in 2020 and that one's like a horror
- 9:18kdrama. Of course he was a nevertheless
- 9:21in 2021 and he's currently in forecasting.
- 9:24Love and weather with Park Min Young and the it's coming out.
- 9:29This year's current Currently airing right now at the time of
- 9:31recording. I think he's the Netflix guy
- 9:35now. Oh yeah.
- 9:36Yeah because he's been in a ton of Netflix shows.
- 9:39They just keep casting him. Don't they call him?
- 9:41Like the prince of Netflix or something?
- 9:43I was everything. Yeah, I saw that, that makes a
- 9:46lot. Like, I don't know who calls him
- 9:47that but somewhat I saw it here and there that they call him,
- 9:51the prince of Netflix, I believe it.
- 9:53And there's like the sun maybe. Oh, where folks is something
- 9:55that's something like that. Yeah, he keeps getting cast an
- 9:59F. Originals and good for him.
- 10:02I mean good for him. Did you like the show after all
- 10:07has all this has been said, the housekeeping's out of the way,
- 10:11we know the cast and everyone behind the scenes.
- 10:14What did you think of never Lera?
- 10:17Checking my reading now? Or should I just oh oh you can
- 10:19give your rating now if you want to out of yet, what would you
- 10:22give a shout out of five Soldier bottles and like, why?
- 10:25Why would you give it? Okay.
- 10:27Okay. So I would give it only A A3
- 10:30which is I think a low-balling a little bit, but that's because I
- 10:35loved like the potential of the show and I don't think it ever
- 10:38quite got to a certain point where I could get where I could
- 10:41give it a file, I could see it being a 5 if that makes any
- 10:44sense. But some of the things I didn't
- 10:46like about it was like so many little individual character pot
- 10:49lines but there was left a lot of like really undeveloped.
- 10:53They didn't really delve into their motivations or like
- 10:56establish. Like how do these people?
- 10:57Why do these people care about each other?
- 10:59Why should I Care about them and when they did manage to say some
- 11:03things about the characters I feel like it was really late in
- 11:05the season, do the show. Yeah so that's why I give it 3
- 11:09Soju bottles but I feel like they have a remake this or
- 11:12something which probably never happen or if there's like
- 11:14another countries like a Japanese or someone remakes that
- 11:17maybe it would be better. Wow.
- 11:19Okay. So I didn't expect you to I mean
- 11:22yeah you kind of said that you were low-balling it but I would
- 11:24probably give it three and a half to four Soju bottles is Or
- 11:29if I'm being generous but I think sitting right now, I'd be
- 11:32a three-and-a-half Soju bottles and basically, I thought that it
- 11:38could have been shorter. I could have been probably Eight
- 11:41Episodes versus 12 episodes. So there was like a lot of fat
- 11:45that could have been trimmed. I kind of agree and kind of
- 11:47disagree with when you say that some characters could have had
- 11:50more development because I feel like towards the end of the show
- 11:54a lot of arc's like were they did were completed High bunch of
- 11:57things. Yeah.
- 11:58Yeah. Which is Nice.
- 12:00But I think honestly, the central relationship between
- 12:04song Kong's character and in one's character is so beautiful
- 12:09that beautiful. It covers a lot of sins.
- 12:13I actually agree with that. Yeah, it was very sentimental
- 12:16and like it, that's why I say like they were so much potential
- 12:19but they end and like you were saying it was a little bit
- 12:21longer for like what it really had to be.
- 12:24And some of the characters there was like too much information.
- 12:27I was like I don't care about these.
- 12:28Why are we dwelling on? This.
- 12:30And then there was other characters and relationships.
- 12:32I was like, where is more of this?
- 12:34Like where are they coming from? So right.
- 12:35It was a little bit of a double-edged thing.
- 12:38Yeah, I would say that the cinematography was absolutely
- 12:40stunning. That's a major Plus for the
- 12:43show, I would say that they're the dialogue and the amount of
- 12:47quotable lines in this was like a lot.
- 12:51Like you're just overwhelmed by the amount of nuggets out there.
- 12:54Throwing at you left. And right.
- 12:56Yes. Honestly, it's or we need to
- 12:58support her. Guy that yeah, well, we can talk
- 13:01about that too in the spoilers section, but I ended up falling
- 13:07mildly in love with the family and I thought that I would be
- 13:10very in love with the family. Like there's other kdrama
- 13:14families that you're like, I love this family, I love this
- 13:16crew, they're so mesmerizing to watch on screen and I feel like
- 13:20I'm a part of their family watching them for 16 hours or
- 13:23what-have-you. Makes me feel like I'm in this
- 13:27drama with them. I'm feeling their emotions.
- 13:29Ins and to a certain extent I was but I was more on the side
- 13:33of the actual heart emoji, then I was like anybody else on the
- 13:38show so when they were all together it wasn't very it was
- 13:44organic but not necessarily what's the word.
- 13:50I didn't want to, like returned to them.
- 13:52Okay, well, I mean, that's what you mean, like, the one to one
- 13:55relationships with horrible G and like his granddaughter had a
- 13:58budgie and certain other. Yeah.
- 14:00Adult children like those are interesting but when the house
- 14:02was completely full, even though I do feel like I had they had
- 14:05chemistry is like a store. They had chemistry as a family
- 14:09on TV family. It wasn't as heartwarming as
- 14:12just like the wonder why I was ever like even with the mom and
- 14:15their her kids are like two tokens heart emoji.
- 14:18Yeah. Yeah I found that poor.
- 14:20Is of the show hit too close to home for me and they felt like I
- 14:24was watching. The saddest thing I've ever
- 14:25watched, yes, I don't want to give anything away in spoilers,
- 14:30but I've had certain family members go through the same
- 14:33thing that this main character is gone through and as a
- 14:38caregiver in a lot of instances, I feel like this family was
- 14:44going through the stages of grief.
- 14:46Yes. And they were going on a really
- 14:49strong heavy. Be emotional Journey that wasn't
- 14:52quite portrayed as well as it probably could have been.
- 14:56There were certain scenes where I was like, this is very
- 14:59accurate. I was like bawling but then
- 15:02other scenes I was like we could extend this like I don't know.
- 15:05It just seemed like it was too much and not enough.
- 15:09At the same time, I definitely can see that because I feel like
- 15:12they were kind of going with the with this assumption that a lot
- 15:15of the audience would kind of figure out the you know.
- 15:19Oh yeah the situation trying to Yeah.
- 15:21You know and and I don't know that everybody does necessarily
- 15:25really understand like what exactly exactly that's exactly
- 15:30what I'm trying to say is that there's a lot of implications
- 15:32and underlying things like consequences I would say is a
- 15:37good word for what hot emojis doing and like what what his
- 15:41diagnosis means right. And I'm not sure that they
- 15:44really kind of cover the gravity of like what is happening and
- 15:50Like the family how they're processing it like they're
- 15:53throwing ideas out like how do we deal with this and I'm like
- 15:56you don't get it. I will say this is going to
- 16:01sound harsh or something, but I feel like they spent too much
- 16:03time on ballet. Okay, no, because I felt like
- 16:13they were gonna get so defensive, don't know.
- 16:15Getting the one seen her. Like, I felt like I was just one
- 16:17scene that they filmed ones and they kept showing it over and
- 16:19over again, which is Loom the body, double in the, in the
- 16:22practice room, like, doing like pirouettes, sir.
- 16:24I don't know the ballet terms, but right, he's doing all this
- 16:26stuff. Which looked cool.
- 16:27The first like few times within the cap.
- 16:29I swear it seem like they're either just doing the exact same
- 16:32camera and yeah, playing the same footage.
- 16:34I agree with you, we caught that down a little bit.
- 16:36We could have dealt more and just like what you were talking
- 16:38about with the diagnosis or the families like struggle about
- 16:41like how do we deal with this? How do we handle this?
- 16:44I agree. Completely knowing that.
- 16:46Yeah, they kept reusing it felt like they were reusing footage
- 16:49in. You're right.
- 16:50The ballet sequences of first, I was like, oh, they're doing this
- 16:53really well and I was like, they're not doing this well at
- 16:55all because the cut that was so abrupt.
- 16:57Right? Like there was either they were
- 16:59shown Um, the waist up or they were shown way far away like in
- 17:03Shadow and you can tell that that's obviously not them.
- 17:08Yeah, it's not out of a g and it's not song kong doing the
- 17:11ballet. So it's annoying.
- 17:14It's annoying because it's, it was distracting.
- 17:16It was like, yeah, I was like, I want to see their faces now.
- 17:19These talented, lovely dancers. Yes, especially especially in
- 17:23the finale. I was like, okay, maybe this is
- 17:25their time to really showcase They can do what these actors
- 17:30have learned over the course of 12 episodes.
- 17:33I know that they've probably been training behind the scenes
- 17:35and actually song spent five to six months, training ballet
- 17:40before they started filming. So I'm like, okay, they're going
- 17:42to Showcase these people and we're gets going to be evident
- 17:47that, it's the actors doing this belly.
- 17:51Not the case. By the way, I have a fun fact
- 17:55about song Kong from mnozil researching for this episode.
- 17:58Yeah. Yeah his father is a door was a
- 18:02gymnast o fact for you all. I wish I had those yeah relevant
- 18:07because he mentioned in some interviews just like how he was
- 18:10worried about trying to do ballet and whether he'd be good
- 18:12at everything he would look good or like just looked look really
- 18:14bad or like it'd just be a complete fail and then he talked
- 18:17it was revealed, I guess that his father was a gymnast in the
- 18:20past and I don't know, like, what level of gymnic gymnastics
- 18:23they were, you know, he was doing but song kong was able to
- 18:26kind of talk about it with his dad.
- 18:28Like, you know, right. That's good.
- 18:31Yeah, no, I didn't know that and there's a certain level of
- 18:33athleticism that comes with just watching song, do ballet, or
- 18:40attempt to do ballet because I couldn't see if he was really
- 18:43doing ballet, most of the time, but I think that he pulled it
- 18:47off pretty well and I just wish that they had given them, the
- 18:53given them performance, the time that it should have been given
- 18:58or the way That it should have been filmed.
- 19:00Should have been different. What's an example of like Oh
- 19:05Black Swan is a great movie, that has body doubles but you
- 19:09know, they use CGI and all this stuff to put Natalie Portman's
- 19:12face onto the ballerinas face. And of course, Natalie Portman
- 19:16like songs, spend months learning ballet and getting the
- 19:19forms, right? So that it could be as seamless
- 19:22as possible. That's a movie that I feel could
- 19:25have been an inspiration for the way that this was shot.
- 19:29That not Alaric could have been shot.
- 19:32I'm going to age myself and Shout out another ballet movie,
- 19:34which is Center Stage, which came out like in maybe 2002 or
- 19:40something, but they and it it featured actual ballerinas and
- 19:43Mallory nose. So it's little bit different in
- 19:45terms of how to film it. But how to film The Dancing?
- 19:48I agree because like, there's a way I felt watching Center Stage
- 19:51that it was so exciting. It was so like you got like, how
- 19:54Cutthroat is the ballet like fields or like how like intense
- 19:58everything as Nothing is just like whatever, it's like life or
- 20:01death, for all the dancers, and for some Kong's character to
- 20:05talk. You do feel like it's life or
- 20:06death for him, but he is like these other survival struggles.
- 20:08Anyway, but in Center Stage, it was just like, wow, this is this
- 20:12is like good dance versus, this is bad dance.
- 20:14And this is like amazingly hard versus you ever watch like
- 20:17Project Runway and used like starch or something like that
- 20:19and you're like oh that Stitch is wrong or like oh right.
- 20:22Right. This is like suddenly like an
- 20:24expert in fashion or whatever or like enough clothing
- 20:28manufacturing. So Got that sense from like
- 20:30Center Stage which was kind of a corny movie, but like, I loved
- 20:33it when I was younger and I was hoping I'd be there.
- 20:36I would kind of inspire these feelings of me about dance.
- 20:39I also only be really passionate dance, I want to take ballet
- 20:42lessons and I didn't feel like that partially because it's
- 20:44like, recycled footage or whatever was going on.
- 20:47I don't know what that one. Yeah.
- 20:48But Tara, I song Gangnam, I'm like, honey bees character James
- 20:51Hong Kong. Did do I thought a good job of
- 20:53like, at least giving off ballarino Vibes, right?
- 20:56However, much dancing, he actually did pain on the
- 20:59footage. So yeah, I don't think that
- 21:01maybe the filmmakers, or sorry, those showrunners weren't as
- 21:06comfortable with showing the actors from the waist down.
- 21:09And maybe I'm not going to throw this out there.
- 21:11Is it because they were in Tights?
- 21:14No, I actually think, Balor from what I know.
- 21:16And again, a lot of ideas from Center Signature than box, one
- 21:20is that the footwork and stuff is, has to be so precise.
- 21:23Yes. From like a ballet, like to be
- 21:25his level of a ballarino. He would have to be nailing the
- 21:29footwork and I don't know who they hired to have a bunch of
- 21:32time to be on a drama as like a body double and do these kinds
- 21:35of scenes. But I mean, it probably wasn't
- 21:37like the principal ballarino of whatever Korean, you know, dance
- 21:40company. So that's my thing.
- 21:43They just were trying to downplay any kind of technical
- 21:45critique, they might have gotten from the dance Community.
- 21:48If that's a thing, I kind of agree, it might be.
- 21:50So I think that's why the kind of I was thinking more like, oh,
- 21:53it's a protector like dignity, because they'd be in Tights,
- 21:57but, yeah, I agree. We that they're not good enough,
- 22:02get a double but at the same time it was it was like
- 22:04Flashdance level. Like it's like okay, that's a
- 22:08man dressed as a woman and I'm like well that's doing slashing.
- 22:12Watching the seen so many times are scenes of them practicing in
- 22:15the practice room. So felt monotonous repetitive
- 22:19recycled. Yes boring and maybe dance with
- 22:22boring like why? So right I agree.
- 22:25That's a major complaint of mine.
- 22:27Did you have any other major complaints that you?
- 22:29Need to talk about generally before we get into spoilers.
- 22:32Um, well without giving spoilers, I did think the
- 22:35characters were so this is just me maybe but the catcher so
- 22:38confusing. Like I didn't understand why the
- 22:41Magna a doctor was not. They his youngest son was like
- 22:45this depressed, former doctor like what was his whole deal and
- 22:48then I and I we finally got some of that way way later like, what
- 22:52it was, what his deal was. Yeah.
- 22:53Or like, you know, I felt like the daughter's husband was seen
- 22:57as like a kind of a loser because he didn't go to college.
- 22:59College and I was like, why are we care about this again?
- 23:01Like I know why? But like, why why does this
- 23:03family care that much about this or the bully?
- 23:06There's like a bully, not just boiler anything but the bullies
- 23:10whole dilemma with. Oh yeah, that was bullshit.
- 23:13That was bullshit. Like what is this?
- 23:15Yeah happening like anyway so that's my biggest complaint was
- 23:19like everything took too long to develop and then some of these
- 23:21didn't get like as developed as I would have liked to have seen
- 23:23it so yeah, true true. Okay.
- 23:25I agree with you completely. And at this point, I think we're
- 23:28just gonna get Into spoilers. So if you don't care to be
- 23:33spoiled, keep listening. But if you haven't watched now
- 23:35Valera, I would suggest you go watch it and then come back and
- 23:38listen to her spoiler talk. So we're gonna get started on
- 23:41spoilers right after this, you want to come in.
- 23:51Okay, so we're on the other side of spoilers for Navi Lera.
- 23:54And we're going to talk through all of the things that probably
- 23:58we didn't like, Like so you mentioned the the Magna a
- 24:02character who is the youngest son of our heart emoji?
- 24:06And he was like a surgeon and gave up his whole career for
- 24:11what? Like I got it kind of at the
- 24:14beginning when he was like kept wearing the, the clogs, the
- 24:20Crocs, that's what they are. He kept wearing Crocs, and it
- 24:22was like the middle of winter and he's wearing Crocs and it
- 24:26was to remind him of the blood that fell.
- 24:29On the Crocs. During one of his last
- 24:31surgeries, he lost a patient and he was saying, oh, I already
- 24:37like said his time of death, but his blood was still falling on
- 24:42my shoes and I it was warm his blood was still warm.
- 24:46Yeah, it sounded like he had a botched surgery and that's why
- 24:49it correct me if I'm wrong. And that's why he quit the field
- 24:52of medicine entirely which like bro you're going to be a doctor
- 24:55like that's going to happen. I wish they said, I know I know
- 24:58first of all I know Oh, you should be Jaded by now because
- 25:01your you cannot save 100% of your patients.
- 25:04Unfortunately, unfortunately. And that's very, very sad
- 25:07reality. And I guess he kind of hit up
- 25:10against this wall in his mind and heart where he was feeling
- 25:15hopeless. And I think they should have
- 25:17said that a little bit better in the dialogue.
- 25:21Maybe they, he had a personal like not an actual personal
- 25:23connection to this. The patient he has to wait,
- 25:26mate, but maybe he saw something in him.
- 25:27Like oh my gosh, this guys, my age are.
- 25:29Oh my Just persons a brother and a father or whatever.
- 25:32This person is living so amazing life.
- 25:34Or they did gave us nothing about why he cares so much about
- 25:36this patient. And I was I thought that was
- 25:39like why is he this depressed? It just didn't make sense.
- 25:41It didn't make sense that he wanted to do a whole documentary
- 25:44on the patient and the patient's that he lost which seemed like a
- 25:48terrible thing to do. Like I'm like are you thinking
- 25:52this through? You don't think that.
- 25:53That's there's going to be a bit of a backlash from the family or
- 25:56the friends from these deceased patients.
- 25:59Like he didn't, like think if they're, he thought he was gonna
- 26:01doing a good thing, or maybe just, it was so selfish almost
- 26:05for him to, like, go poking at this.
- 26:07Well, because he obviously had unanswered questions, but we
- 26:10don't know what they were. We had no reason to like yeah,
- 26:12or like, why? Why are you making a
- 26:14documentary? Just seems so random and I
- 26:16thought. Okay, go, go over it in going
- 26:18National say even wearing the Crocs.
- 26:20Okay. Yes, yes.
- 26:21The blood was a warm but like it takes, I don't know.
- 26:23The whole thing is like if you work for any amount of time and
- 26:26around a hospital it's like not that deep not to be.
- 26:29About it, but just like blood gets cold.
- 26:31After someone dies, you have to go around wearing those Crocs
- 26:35forever. I don't know.
- 26:35Like, they try to make it more sentimental than it was.
- 26:38And I think if you're, if you've ever seen someone who's gone
- 26:41through medical school and training or if you've been
- 26:43someone who's gone through out of school training, like this is
- 26:45not your first death. It's not probably not your first
- 26:47death at your hate video by your hand almost, you wouldn't get
- 26:50this worked up unless you're like, oh my gosh, this was my
- 26:53brother, right? Oh my gosh, this is my best
- 26:55friend. Yeah, there has to be a certain
- 26:57level of professionalism and even though Or in a
- 26:59life-or-death situation and people are depending on you, you
- 27:03this is your job. You do this day in and day out
- 27:06and sure it gets to you. But like do you quit your entire
- 27:09career over it? It didn't seem like there was
- 27:12enough for him to dislike the job.
- 27:15Like maybe he didn't. I'm I'm in my mind.
- 27:18This was I was bored. I was thinking was that he was a
- 27:20closeted creative and that he wanted to be in a more creative
- 27:26job and so he chose documentary I was I was He's a filmmaker
- 27:30like he wants to be in that field versus in the medical
- 27:34field. So it was never a good fit for
- 27:35him. Not the case at all.
- 27:37Like I made up this whole story in my head.
- 27:39No he was not say cuz that was kind of where or what?
- 27:43I thought were the I thought I was going to wear like his you
- 27:45kind of became a doctor to satisfy his parents and deal,
- 27:48but then he kept going to visit his former doctor colleagues and
- 27:52friends and he was like honestly at the hospital.
- 27:53Yes. Ali.
- 27:55And he was never actually making almost never actually making a
- 27:57documentary except for like a couple steps.
- 27:59You made her like Scout a location and he, you know, had
- 28:01some cameras or whatever, then he finally started doing other
- 28:03documentary. So I was like, I do not get this
- 28:06and not to, you know, she many ones, whatever mixed feelings
- 28:09depression, trauma, whatever you going on, but I wish they would
- 28:12have shared it with us. Have been like when he, you
- 28:14know, when he was younger, he wished he did this and he felt
- 28:16if like a failure. What was it?
- 28:18That was so bad. Right?
- 28:19Was he feel like he failed to feel like he left something
- 28:21down, himself down, it just made no sense.
- 28:24Real sense. Ultimately, yes, were we agree
- 28:27on that? We can talk About the son-in-law
- 28:31character, who was, like trying to be a politician, who's like a
- 28:33wannabe politician, trying to go for like local government?
- 28:37And to me, that was kind of a poop storyline because it was
- 28:42very, it was very unsatisfactory.
- 28:45The guy didn't win his election, he you seem to be a burden on
- 28:49his wife, who was very frustrated with him.
- 28:52Kept saying like, oh I don't know about this and kept like
- 28:55just looking down upon him and not necessarily because he
- 28:58didn't have a college education. Asian but because he didn't have
- 29:00any, he didn't have any realistic goals and he didn't
- 29:05have a wishy-washy was wishy-washy and just needed a
- 29:09lot of confidence boosting and then he wasn't good at anything
- 29:14he did. So like at that point like you
- 29:16should probably switch to something else.
- 29:17It seemed like they were in debt all the time.
- 29:20The mom, the mom character hajis wife kept giving her money like
- 29:25they were struggling. Yeah.
- 29:28And also it was interesting because the I felt like towards
- 29:31the end finally if the husband redeem that sounds horrible,
- 29:34redeemed himself because he went hard but she's facing his
- 29:38diagnosis. Everything he was the one who's
- 29:40like we can take care of him. We can manage this.
- 29:42If you're my family, I'm your son too.
- 29:43Yeah and it's sort of like painted the thinks.
- 29:45I felt like in the beginning they were pinning had a bunny
- 29:48the grandma to be like someone who was so hung up on maybe
- 29:51status or like just never wanted to be like struggling with money
- 29:54again. Yeah.
- 29:54Want our kids to be super settled successful etcetera.
- 29:57And he wasn't like helping her daughter to achieve that.
- 30:00But then he was like, look, I'm family like we're a family and
- 30:03so it's not always about, I think it's like a reminder of
- 30:05like it's always about status or position in Life or, you know,
- 30:08whether or not you're you can make decisions.
- 30:11It's also just about being reliable family member.
- 30:14Yeah, I agree with that. That was something that I wish I
- 30:17would have touched on more, is that there was a weird dichotomy
- 30:20between the spouses that married into the family and then the
- 30:24Sons and Daughters of how to Boogie.
- 30:27And that they seem to be like second class has since within
- 30:30the family, like they didn't have any say they were voicing
- 30:33their opinions and like the other siblings are like you
- 30:35can't say anything, you're not even, you're not even part of
- 30:37the family which out of line. They should have been slapped
- 30:41years ago. Like the, you can tell these are
- 30:42like old married couples have been married for like over a
- 30:45decade and still like the oil. They both were like, yeah, I'll
- 30:49take him in. Well, do whatever.
- 30:50Like will drop everything and I was like, why are you again?
- 30:53The like lack of like explaining motivations or people's like,
- 30:57Whatever like yeah, why are you doing this?
- 31:00They didn't. It's not like we saw, how do I
- 31:01would be super close to either of those children in law because
- 31:04it just wasn't within the scope of this drama?
- 31:07Yeah, probably was something, but we didn't see it.
- 31:09I think that they showcased the spouses being taken care of by
- 31:15the hot Emoji, especially with the wife of the oldest son, who
- 31:21supported how to achieve when he came out and said he wanted to
- 31:24do badly, she was unconditionally support.
- 31:27Of him. And they did a flashback of her
- 31:30as a new mom. And she was struggling, she was
- 31:33struggling to find her identity as a new mom, she struggled
- 31:37because she wanted to go back to working full-time and her
- 31:40husband was like relegating her to the house, and being a
- 31:43full-time mom. And so she was like, he
- 31:47supported me during that. I know that you came to the
- 31:49house and were taking care of your granddaughter.
- 31:53While I was struggling at talking through my issues with
- 31:56my mom. On the phone and it seemed like
- 32:00that was so profound to her. And it left such a mark on her
- 32:03that she was like, I'll your, you're mine, I'm yours and I'm
- 32:07gonna support you. I didn't feel like there was
- 32:10that closeness with the husband, the politician husband, right?
- 32:15It's social cause he got dragged on so much by G but like
- 32:18everybody else. Yeah.
- 32:20But his wife which was stirred daughter had this profound
- 32:24amazing, emotional moment in the final episode.
- 32:27Or she cries, and begs her. Dad, not to go into the nursing
- 32:32home, and let them take care of him.
- 32:34Let her take care of him. She was going through this whole
- 32:37infertility crisis throughout her married life and they never
- 32:42were able to have children. It's a huge emotion emotional
- 32:46Journey that kind of came to an end during the show where she
- 32:48said I'm giving up like a can't, I can't kiss.
- 32:51Wondered like she was giving up. Anyways, on trying to pursue
- 32:54this building a family, at least your biological Yeah, and when
- 32:58she found out about hot emojis diagnosis, I almost feel like
- 33:01maybe they're trying to tell us and it could just be me like,
- 33:03making this up, but maybe they're trying to us that she
- 33:05found a purpose, like the purpose or whatever role.
- 33:08Like, having a child would have filled in her life, or whatever.
- 33:10Fulfillment, that would have give brought her now.
- 33:12She was kind of channeling that into taking care of her father.
- 33:14Exactly. Yeah, she basically said instead
- 33:17of paying it forward with her own children, she'd pay him back
- 33:22for all the kindness and care that he showed her growing up
- 33:24and she cited. This one thing of he always
- 33:27Picked her up from school. Whenever it rained we just like
- 33:31I was crying. I was crying.
- 33:32I was emotional. It was a I personally my
- 33:37grandfather passed away many years ago, but he also had
- 33:41Alzheimer's and he died basically bedridden and of
- 33:44Alzheimer's, like his body, just shut down and the fact that she
- 33:49cited that he came to get her from school and it was a rate
- 33:53whenever it rained, he was, is such a subtle thing.
- 33:56But my grandfather used to pick me up from school every day.
- 34:00Yeah so it was like oh just like gut-wrenching, it hit me right
- 34:05in the feels because it was so close to home.
- 34:08You know, when she was like, please don't do this.
- 34:10And at this point, I mean, I guess you can kind of, if you
- 34:15are sticking around and you haven't watched novel, are you
- 34:18can kind of guess that like the heart emoji has Alzheimer's.
- 34:23He's in the early speech in the early stages of Alzheimer's.
- 34:26Which you I knew immediately like when He got lost the first
- 34:31time. We got lost in the museum.
- 34:34I was like, so some kind of cognitive decline.
- 34:36Yes, I was like oh no he's got Alzheimer's or he's got
- 34:39dementia. Yeah.
- 34:41The earlier on I kind of was guessing like it was like a
- 34:43terminal illness. Like yes, sir.
- 34:45Yes. And then when he like you said,
- 34:47when you start getting lost or having these like confusion
- 34:48moment, you're like, oh, it's something like dementia.
- 34:51I'm gonna take a little minute to talk to you about Alzheimer's
- 34:54and cry because I looked up at, yes, absolutely tell her.
- 34:56Yeah, so Korea is as you already probably No population where a
- 35:01lot of the people are aging just like Japan for example, and it's
- 35:05the fastest aging country among the organization for economic
- 35:08cooperation and development also known as oecd countries.
- 35:12This is something I'm quoting, by the way, from a medical
- 35:15journal called the annals of geriatric, medicine and
- 35:17research. So projects with projection,
- 35:19showing it possibly becoming the country with the highest number
- 35:22of older people in 2075. So, it's a very big concern in
- 35:25Korea just like, how to do elder care.
- 35:28It's also a country, where not a lot of Of children are being
- 35:30born or so, there's this, this fear of like, in the future
- 35:33Society, won't be able to sustain or support their elderly
- 35:36population. And in fact, an article that I
- 35:39read that interviewed Park in Han the gentleman who played
- 35:43Hadji he himself said, one out of four people in Korea are
- 35:47seniors. That's how many seniors there
- 35:49are now, dramas, films and plays are all works, that reflect on
- 35:52contemporary Society. I hope that subjects become more
- 35:55Diversified such as care facilities or nursing homes.
- 35:58So, I think he means like film the subject On such a place,
- 36:01maybe they'll take place in, you know, they can't be, uh,
- 36:03neglected population. So and all timers in general is
- 36:07just such a devastating diagnosis to get.
- 36:09And I'm also going to just randomly say this here, that I
- 36:12thought it was interesting that as soon as chaddock realized
- 36:16that Hadji had Alzheimer's, he was so devastated and I was
- 36:20like, I wonder if it's super realistic to think not to rain
- 36:24on this parade that it's 20, however, your old would like
- 36:27realize the gravity of this Hmm. I wow.
- 36:31That's a, that's a good point is that I don't think I this is
- 36:36hard because I my grandfather got Alzheimer's and I think I
- 36:39was in my late teens and I didn't think, I mean, I was
- 36:43like, oh yeah, he's going to forget stuff but like, as soon
- 36:46as I had to start coming over and changing his diaper, like,
- 36:49if things could totally change. I was like, oh no, this is like
- 36:53a real. Debilitating disease, like, in
- 36:58his case, he really, I mean, it was a decline but it wasn't as
- 37:01rapid as other family members who also have been diagnosed
- 37:08with Alzheimer's. So, I for a 23 year, olds
- 37:13understand the gravity of the situation and think that it's a
- 37:16terminal illness because it it is a term to me, it is a
- 37:19terminal illness. Like your might not have died
- 37:22from Alzheimer's, but you're going to forget how to hold a
- 37:23spoon. You're going to forget your
- 37:25family members. You there was a sense of loss
- 37:28before the death actually occurs arising cause of death in Korea,
- 37:32when it's getting into the top 10 causes of death.
- 37:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:37I a lot of people just don't understand like I've talked to
- 37:41friends and other family members who never had to go through it
- 37:44directly and like they don't understand it's like oh they
- 37:48forget stuff for they repeat themselves, like, you know, just
- 37:51play along with whatever they're saying is like no, you don't
- 37:53understand so much more devastating.
- 37:56Yes, it's not just that and I and chaddock it was obvious
- 37:59didn't have like a ton of family members so did he have personal
- 38:02experience? You know someone again it's like
- 38:04another thing of this drama not giving us a ton of information
- 38:07like back early and work with that but he That this was like
- 38:11such bad news for hydrology and he felt so bad for her money and
- 38:14her head was his grand daughter. Who was kind of friends would
- 38:17like it was just he realized the gravity but is that like
- 38:20realistic? I don't know.
- 38:21I agree, I agree that didn't seem realistic to me.
- 38:26I mean, it seem realistic to me as an audience member because
- 38:30I'm like, oh God. Yeah.
- 38:31Like that's say goodbye because it's really, it'll take, I don't
- 38:38know, say it's going to take its time, but the progression is Is
- 38:40difficult to Grapple with as a caregiver.
- 38:44Think it's so unpredictable. So, like exactly.
- 38:46And he seemed very kind of shook about it.
- 38:48Like, oh my gosh, how did what she has Alzheimer's?
- 38:51He was like struggling, like how do I break this news to anyone
- 38:53else in the family? Or should I break it this news
- 38:55or like it's his news to give he was going through the struggle?
- 38:58Which I thought was really well portrayed and Sung.
- 39:00Kang did a great job acting all that out that dilemma and his
- 39:03worry and his concern and fear. But I but you know for example
- 39:07you had this personal experience of knowing someone with
- 39:10Alzheimer's Someone who's very close to you, and you saw
- 39:12firsthand like what they go through on a day-to-day basis.
- 39:14As they continued progress, I don't have chaddock had that
- 39:17experience or how he exactly knew.
- 39:19I was just wondering. I was really curious, like, how
- 39:21does he know it was not like I'm like, oh, he doesn't know.
- 39:23That's ridiculous. But I was just more like, how
- 39:25does he know? Like that's really amazing that
- 39:27he knows that I was curious. He's so attuned to it.
- 39:30It was, It was kind of bizarre. I almost stopped for a second.
- 39:33His mom had her something because rules mom died.
- 39:35Yeah. They never said, they know how
- 39:38she died either. So And I was like going crazy,
- 39:44he kept visiting her and talking to her while in the columbarium,
- 39:48and I'm like, but how did she die?
- 39:50Like, why did she die? So something the relationship
- 39:53like? Yeah, that's really should like
- 39:55with his dad. Who, you know, obviously went to
- 39:57jail, was she alive? During I think she was.
- 39:59But anyway, I was like, I needed so much more about his mom and
- 40:02that like his wife before his dad, went to jail.
- 40:04Yes. And I wanted so much more from
- 40:06the dad character as well who they seem to want.
- 40:10A have they did like a half-baked reconciliation with a
- 40:14dad and I actually have big is half big because there was a
- 40:18couple of conversations a couple of couple of words had and then
- 40:23like what will be just forgive all the years of abuse.
- 40:25Like we're like there's something in the dad abuse
- 40:30Channel because well or debuts only as part of the soccer team
- 40:33by ioc beating kids in the soccer team, like Iowa.
- 40:35So I'm lost. Yes, it was a bizarre things
- 40:38happen. Why did he go to prison for
- 40:40beating? Ting children.
- 40:41The White Sox. Yeah.
- 40:43Not uncommon in Korean - to be children but you know from like
- 40:48it's teachers or like I mean I think it's less common now but I
- 40:51know like there's other dramas where they show teachers
- 40:53practicing corporal punishment. Yeah.
- 40:56So I was like, is this a crime like genuinely?
- 40:58I was like, it's a crime. Why was it a crime?
- 41:00Why was this incident? A crime and other incidents.
- 41:03Did he like, he didn't like murder anyone not to sound
- 41:05flippant about it but then the bully having this like a whole
- 41:09giant dead. Hope they'll yeah, total been
- 41:11done against the family like, of course, that makes sense,
- 41:13because but then it was like the.
- 41:15Why? Because he's like, my career is
- 41:17over and then the grandpa was like, no, it's not over and I
- 41:19was like, what is going on right now?
- 41:22Okay, what anyone's doing this drama, the bully.
- 41:26I couldn't get a read on him for a lot of times.
- 41:29It was. So one note and you're just
- 41:31like, oh, he's such a good boy when he was like a little soccer
- 41:33player. Yeah, fully with bleached hair
- 41:35and then like just indiscriminately beating up
- 41:37people. It seems like and then I don't
- 41:39know, it was It's weird. I didn't like that.
- 41:41No, no. Okay, I can go.
- 41:45Go ahead. What are you gonna say, okay?
- 41:46This is about the best friend, tear ducts best friend.
- 41:49Who's the goalkeeper in the soccer team and new the bully.
- 41:52And but yeah, it wasn't really afraid of the bully because he's
- 41:55like, this is not my deal. This is between like, chugs down
- 41:58and the bully. I was like what are these
- 42:00relationships because he seemed close to both of them.
- 42:02Sort of, unlike many not friends with the bully, but he seemed
- 42:04like they like how this history. They were team and who each
- 42:07other. There may be friends.
- 42:09And then when the dad goes to But that surely was not the
- 42:11first time he like whooped all these soccer players.
- 42:14So like I don't really I don't. Yeah, there's so many questions.
- 42:17Unanswered questions are piling up here.
- 42:21Here's a question. We can probably answer, though.
- 42:23Do you think song that's a good actor?
- 42:26So at first I was like, this guy is not good, okay.
- 42:29I've never seen a local farm and I haven't watched over the last.
- 42:32I haven't watched a lot of, but I know he's very popular so kind
- 42:35of had high expectations in my mind for a minute versus like,
- 42:37this is not good at acting but then I realized actually it was
- 42:40pretty good. Acting because the parts where
- 42:42so chair rock just to like backtrack a little.
- 42:44Chadwick was essentially abandoned in a way like his
- 42:46mother died. She did intentionally abandon
- 42:48him but she's gone and then his dad is like, in jail.
- 42:50Also not intentional, but he's gone.
- 42:52And he's like, just so alone and he's the struggles were, he's
- 42:55like alone in his apartment and it's just like, hitting him in
- 42:58like, emotional waves, that I'm alone, and no one's there for
- 43:01me. And I have to survive, somehow,
- 43:04I had to like, my dad is even care.
- 43:06Is that how he feels right? He just like pieces out after
- 43:08his release from prison. And I think I thought those
- 43:12Quiet Moments where he's just like, I'm going through really
- 43:15Deep Emotions were so amazing. She doesn't say anything, right?
- 43:19It's like not. There's no dialogue, right?
- 43:21Okay, just feeling the feels, so here's the keys.
- 43:24You think he is a good? Okay, here's my take.
- 43:28This is a hot take, all right, I don't think some kind is a good
- 43:31actor. Okay.
- 43:33I mean I didn't either at first, so I have watched him in the
- 43:36lion. His lover.
- 43:37I've watched him in season 1 of Love alarm, I've watched him.
- 43:40Nevertheless, I don't think he's a good actor.
- 43:44There's something about looking at song Kong and there's
- 43:48something about his little beady eyes that I can't get a read on.
- 43:51I feel like there's nothing there and that scares me that
- 43:56there. It seems so empty.
- 43:57He seems so empty, a lot of emotionless.
- 44:00So I think that's what happened with novel era where I was like
- 44:03this guy is doesn't remote and then I was like, well as
- 44:05character sort of like, you know, a trauma response is to be
- 44:09like in a frozen sort of Date, right?
- 44:10If that's what you want to call it.
- 44:12I'm kind of diagnosing him from over here without any
- 44:13credentials. But if he's like, he's like
- 44:17traumatized or if he's like going through it essentially and
- 44:21he just can't like you don't have time to feel his feelings.
- 44:23It's sort of then did make sense of he's so like Stony and like
- 44:27emotionless and but then like, yeah, I thought they had my his
- 44:31moments hopefully that gives them.
- 44:33I would agree that in this show, he probably did the best that
- 44:37I've seen him act, especially Like when he was driving a car
- 44:41at one point, he was like freaking freaking out because he
- 44:44can't drive very well. I was like, okay, and some
- 44:46emotion, he's acting the goodbye scene.
- 44:50He porchetta. Yes.
- 44:52Yeah, that was good to area more like in general in the bathrooms
- 44:56of the ballet studio, right? Yeah.
- 44:59He's panicked and you're like, okay, I feel this, I feel the
- 45:02urgency, I feel the panic. I think when he said goodbye too
- 45:05hot to go G and the airport as well, I was like oh God, Sung
- 45:09Kang you're bringing It was very emotional because he starts
- 45:12crying too and they hug which is very uncommon and kdramas for 2,
- 45:17male figures to hug and I was like, oh God.
- 45:21So I would say that he did the best.
- 45:23In this one. Still, not Stellar still not a
- 45:25great actor to me. I think he has a long way to go.
- 45:28He's got the model look but like not the chops.
- 45:32The acting chops yet so that's the end of my hot sake.
- 45:37Um hot of oh geez wife. She goes through quite an arc
- 45:41actually where she is very close-minded and upset at his
- 45:48him learning ballet and I just, I was had very little sympathy
- 45:53for her. I was like, she has no leg to
- 45:55stand on, and I just didn't. I felt so much anger toward her
- 46:00towards the first time because the reason she gave a
- 46:03ridiculous. She's like, do you want to live
- 46:04here kids? Why are you doing your own
- 46:06thing? I was like, what he's retired.
- 46:08Kids are his kids are adults like what?
- 46:10Supposed to do exactly like, she kept packing food for them and
- 46:13giving them. I come over, get the soup come
- 46:15over and get this, whatever she made.
- 46:16And that's nice, but they didn't need that.
- 46:18It was like these children. Adult children were had any kind
- 46:20of me that the hardwood you should have been attending to.
- 46:23And so, she was just getting mad at him for like no reason.
- 46:25Yes, ridiculous. Every moment you live should be
- 46:28for your kids. It's like what?
- 46:29That's ridiculous. Even for like Asian family.
- 46:32Yeah, she had a skewed version of like, what her role is at
- 46:36this point in life, where she was still trying to be the mom
- 46:38and it's like, no, you're pretty much done.
- 46:40Done like they're already cooked.
- 46:41Like the youngest the Monday is 39 years old.
- 46:45You're done. He said that so many times.
- 46:48He's like I'm 39 and 39. Yeah, you said it over and over
- 46:51again. And now I remember it, but when
- 46:54she guilted him into quitting ballet, I I was seething.
- 46:58I was seething know when she cut into his leg is ready to throw
- 47:02something. God, I was throwing had, oh my
- 47:05God, the worst, the worst ever moment.
- 47:08Yeah. Like that whole drama.
- 47:09I felt like was when she Cut again, really cut up his dance
- 47:12legging. Yes.
- 47:13He cut up his leotard and then said, age gracefully like that
- 47:16was the thing. She kept saying like age
- 47:17gracefully, just go hiking with me.
- 47:19Like, why do you need to do this?
- 47:20Just like you're such an embarrassment.
- 47:21You said, and I did feel like her tail was like the status quo
- 47:24that she like works so hard to achieve and wanted to maintain
- 47:27it. All costs for her kids, even
- 47:29like her kids had to live up to and I feel like in her mind her
- 47:31husband had to live up to what she had to live up to it.
- 47:33And I think and I know they struggled in the early days of
- 47:36their marriage, but then she was so hung up on it.
- 47:39Still. I was like this.
- 47:40This is ridiculous. Yeah, you don't you don't give
- 47:42her an inch in the show as an audience member.
- 47:45She yeah she kept citing her kids.
- 47:48She was like they were just too poor to send their kids school
- 47:52fees when they were younger and the kids grew up, well, despite
- 47:57all these circumstances. So can't he stop ballet for the
- 48:01kids now when they're so against it like bullshit, we've already
- 48:05established a grown-ass kids like let.
- 48:08How about do you live and Achieve this level of success
- 48:11like you said, like despite their yes they had hardships.
- 48:14But now they're all kind of like maybe not as subtle as she would
- 48:16like or as successful as you like.
- 48:18But they're they're they're at the point, she brought them up
- 48:20to be at so I don't know what more she really wants.
- 48:22Yeah. Why she's to bring hot Emoji
- 48:24into this. She kind of saw ballet is being
- 48:27this frivolous thing when they sacrificed so much to raise
- 48:30their kids. But of mind, I'm like, babe.
- 48:32It's been 20 years since you were like raising a child.
- 48:35So this is the time, this is the time for him to he can do ballet
- 48:40it. It was very frustrating to watch
- 48:43the family, have family many meetings over the hot Emoji
- 48:47learning ballet. Like what is that?
- 48:49Why do we need a family meeting about?
- 48:51No idea and it occurs like he took put on a tutu, walk down
- 48:55the street and then like went to ballet class and maybe that's an
- 48:57issue and their neighborhood of but that would be an issue in
- 49:00their neighborhood but he just was casually going to Studio
- 49:02doing his thing and coming home. That's it, like, it's like going
- 49:04to the gym. Almost, he's not even hurting
- 49:06anybody like no, no, the Asshole, son the oldest son, I
- 49:13call them to asshole. Son.
- 49:14The in the one I really was like, why are we?
- 49:17I didn't want to. I didn't care about him.
- 49:18Yeah because he's you can't Brew for him at all.
- 49:21Like he's terrible. He I think I won't point the why
- 49:25his wife was going back to work right after 20 years, like she's
- 49:28going back to work. Finally full-time is what she's
- 49:31wanted like since the child was born, she's wanted to go back to
- 49:34work full time and he was offended that she wanted to go
- 49:37back to work offended that she had an interview for the job.
- 49:40She was like, he was demanding that she still fulfill her
- 49:43responsibilities as a mom and a wife.
- 49:45So I really did not understand this because I feel like they
- 49:48met as sort of equals or peers or whatever is colleague
- 49:51something? So why are you so weirded out by
- 49:54her desires to go back to that status special.
- 49:57She did fulfill her duties as a mom.
- 49:58It exactly. You want her to keep packing
- 50:01Bento boxes for you like I don't understand.
- 50:03Like it was very weird. It was very weird.
- 50:05It was so annoying. And then of course, his reaction
- 50:08to the dad. Doing ballet.
- 50:11I mean, he thought he kept saying that, are you doing this
- 50:15to me? Why are you doing this to me?
- 50:17Like, like I said, bad starting ballet was like to spite him as
- 50:22a punishment to him, like he's the victim.
- 50:25I think that was very much a reflection of his mom.
- 50:27His mom's attitude was like you're ruining our whole family
- 50:29by you doing this little thing and the oldest son or eldest,
- 50:32son kind of mirrored that like you're ruining my life, the most
- 50:37prestigious one here basically this attitude the whole time.
- 50:40So he's like this is going to affect me.
- 50:41The most I have the most to lose and I guess it's supposed to
- 50:44show like his him and his mom being on the same page was over
- 50:47and I was like, we don't care this much but I think the tide
- 50:51finally changes when that sun drops in on them and sees the
- 50:56dad and his leotard and blows a gasket.
- 50:59Like he completely is out of line and disrespectful the way
- 51:04he speaks to his father. And finally, the wife, the
- 51:07Hominy is like, just Hitting him and just like, why are you
- 51:11talking that way to your father? He's done so much for this
- 51:14family. You don't understand.
- 51:16Because he was saying stuff that like he's never, I've never
- 51:20asked you for a favor ever. You know, I've had to make
- 51:22sacrifices growing up while you got to live comfortably and
- 51:26like, no, no, no, it's the other way around.
- 51:28Get ya out of pocket. Mmm, it's still so
- 51:32disrespectful. So the Mom finally she sticks up
- 51:35for heart emoji. And she says, why does your why
- 51:38does our sons success have to make us feel so small.
- 51:41Why does your father have to feel sorry when you've grown up
- 51:44so well, so profound. Yeah.
- 51:48So it is I love that line and I love that she finally is like,
- 51:52do belly, like it's fine. Actually, for me, that was a
- 51:55moment to where she was like because prior to that she had
- 51:57been like, I do everything for my kids, I sacrificed my whole
- 52:00life for my kids and then she finally was like, actually there
- 52:02should be more reciprocal than it may be.
- 52:04Is like they there could, they were kind of up until that point
- 52:06ignoring them a little bit. Like they were always bugged by
- 52:09her and they're like oh Mom CNO. They she wants to pick up soup
- 52:12again or whatever and they were like very bothered and then she
- 52:15finally was like, actually you guys need to respect us and
- 52:19appreciate us. And that was kind of good.
- 52:21Yeah, I liked that part. Yeah, I have so many lines here.
- 52:25I cannot go through each one but like I face my problem head-on
- 52:29because I wanted to be happy. What makes you happiest.
- 52:34Someone asked me that question today but I couldn't answer it.
- 52:36I'm going to find out and that's something that's own Kong asks.
- 52:40The granddaughter because they're like semi friends.
- 52:44That was an interesting relationship and I don't think
- 52:47they really gave her our a lot of play as much as they did in
- 52:52like the Middle episodes where she is shown at work with song
- 52:58and she's getting treated badly. She's doing badly on the job.
- 53:01She gets played by her evaluator who wanted her to look translate
- 53:06her thesis paper into English and then gave her a c on the
- 53:09evaluation and like, Shut down his chances at Landing, a
- 53:12permanent position at the company.
- 53:14It was like all this drama and then like we don't get as much
- 53:17drama the rest of the show for her.
- 53:20She had like this really juicy moment and then like yeah done.
- 53:24Yeah and then she's like, I love working at the radio.
- 53:26I was like whoa. Like that happened way too
- 53:28quickly. Yeah, from like she had this
- 53:30other idea of her life and then she's like I don't want this
- 53:32radio internship and then she gets it.
- 53:33She's like just kidding. I love it.
- 53:34And I was like, what's that happened?
- 53:36So fast. That was weird to.
- 53:37Yeah. Because at the end, she sits
- 53:38down with song and she's like, oh, yeah.
- 53:40Found it. I found what makes me happy and
- 53:41he's like what is that? Just like working at the radio
- 53:44station makes it was up about. Hold on, hold on.
- 53:46How do we get there? You were being awesome because
- 53:49she was just like a coffee bringer copies maker.
- 53:52She wasn't like yeah, anything important not to be me.
- 53:55That is important. Yeah.
- 53:58But she wasn't doing meaningful work.
- 53:59Right. Right.
- 54:00Right. Fulfilling work.
- 54:01Yeah, she was just showing up. I do like that they didn't have
- 54:06any like they seemed like they were going to get like kind of
- 54:08romantical. Let's talk about this because I
- 54:10thought I was like, oh, they're gonna get their song on the
- 54:14granddaughter are going to make it as a couple by the end of the
- 54:16show or something to that effect.
- 54:18Yeah, never happened. Never happened.
- 54:21What the hell? It was both frustrating, but I
- 54:24was kind of like, actually, this is good because for one thing I
- 54:27think towards the end, maybe this again, just me, but they
- 54:29almost had a sibling Dynamic there, like, we share a grandpa.
- 54:31So now it's like, okay, we don't want them to get together.
- 54:34Also, To fulfill his dreams. There's no way he could really
- 54:36be with her because she's like, working in a local radio
- 54:38station. He's like, I gotta go be a
- 54:39ballerina and Italy or whatever he was doing those kind of
- 54:42Impractical. And yeah, he just was so adopted
- 54:46by The Harem. Only had a body that it seemed
- 54:49almost incestuous. I would've been almost
- 54:50incestuous, you know, that was my take on it right again.
- 54:54I could be reading this in a really weird way but they did
- 54:57have this really nice camaraderie and understanding
- 54:59and she's like, you look after my grandpa and I think she does
- 55:02such appreciation for how he did look.
- 55:04After her grandma, she recognized that acknowledge that
- 55:08and she's just like, I'm here for you, bro.
- 55:09Like, I like that dynamic as a change.
- 55:12But yes, at some point, I was like, are they gonna kiss?
- 55:14I think it gets a guy hired all that.
- 55:18Yeah, I was kind of hoping it's sunk.
- 55:20I'm gonna blankly look out a window and like they cut to the
- 55:23granddaughter and so he's obviously thinking of her like,
- 55:26no, it never happened. It's kind of refreshing, the
- 55:30kind of a letdown if you're into kdrama.
- 55:32I agree. Completely it is.
- 55:34Like okay, I was expecting. It would have been okay with it
- 55:37but then they didn't do it. I'm like okay.
- 55:38Yeah. Platonic friendship is okay to
- 55:40like, it's fine. Yeah, either way, but it was a
- 55:44bit of a fake. Oh yes, the incompatible this
- 55:48company. Yeah, they're compatible.
- 55:50Yeah, I was very emotional during the ballet scene in the
- 55:55snow and there were three ballet scenes in the snow.
- 56:01Right. Right where and this one was an
- 56:04episode a where Hollywood? He loses his memory and he's
- 56:07like been in standing in the street Frozen for like over 30
- 56:10minutes and he couldn't remember Chadwick.
- 56:13So chaddock starts dancing in the, in the walkway there.
- 56:17Oh my God. Beautiful beautiful.
- 56:22Any got the park in one, like his portrayal of someone so
- 56:27freaked out. Cannot doesn't know where he is,
- 56:29doesn't know who he's talking to.
- 56:30She doesn't know what's happening.
- 56:31It's just having this like moment where his Alzheimer's
- 56:34symptoms are flaring if that's the way I could describe it.
- 56:38I thought that was such a good portrayal because he looks so
- 56:40freaked out. And then and then putting that
- 56:43scene in the writers to me that seated with songkong like
- 56:45dancing to jog his memory. So genius I thought like yeah
- 56:49you know, he could have just been like remember we take
- 56:51ballet together and I'm your teacher.
- 56:52He did do a little bit of that, but then he's like, okay, I'm
- 56:54just gonna start dancing because it shows how yeah, this art is.
- 56:56So moving your heart of a g in particular.
- 56:59It's more than words, it's more. Then anything else?
- 57:02Oh my God. Yes, it's transcending.
- 57:05You know, totally God. Great word.
- 57:08It was beautiful and I didn't care that that wasn't Sung Kang
- 57:12dancing in the, the silhouette or whatever.
- 57:16I was just moved. I was moved when that scene came
- 57:19up and of course, had a woody does.
- 57:22Remember him, he liked it, does jog his memory.
- 57:24So it's I think of it as like movie Magic because In real
- 57:29life, I do not think that a little dancing.
- 57:34Boy will jog, an Alzheimer's patients memory.
- 57:38Never know, you never know. It's a very unpredictable
- 57:41disease and a funny story my grandmother.
- 57:44She just recently passed away like a couple of months ago, but
- 57:46she thank you. She also got dementia and
- 57:51hurlers way later than my grandfather did.
- 57:53She was in her late 80s but she got dementia and it was a very
- 57:57rapid decline for her. But she never forgot that my
- 58:00friend met her husband on a cruise, like, they would come
- 58:04and visit, she wouldn't remember who they were and then they'd
- 58:07start talking like, oh yeah, you guys met on the cruise, right?
- 58:10So like random. Yeah, the most random thing that
- 58:13she remembered but the dancing in the snow sequence, in episode
- 58:1810, also shook me up. That was when Haji starts
- 58:22dancing in the like lights from the car and it's snowing again.
- 58:26Oh my gosh, I thought Because the traditional kdrama Trope is
- 58:31no means romance, right first? No first time you like get
- 58:35together or whatever is like there's always those things
- 58:37about snow not that this was first no necessarily.
- 58:39But in this drama they used to know for these pivotal moments
- 58:43that are related to ballet which was like in a way his first
- 58:46love. If you think about it moving you
- 58:48getting to it? No keep going.
- 58:50Keep going. But yeah like it's something
- 58:53that's so meaningful and and his passion and he like kind of
- 58:56tamped it down for so long. And then every time it snows,
- 58:59Knows there's like this important dance scene.
- 59:01I thought that was a nice again. I kind of appreciate some of the
- 59:04variations away from the regular drama tropes and regular,
- 59:08expectations of what the drama will be because it's so much
- 59:11more creative and kind of more meaningful.
- 59:14I thought. Anyway, yes.
- 59:15Beautiful interpretation of that because yes, no is usually a
- 59:19Romancing. But this is a bromance with an
- 59:23art form. Yeah.
- 59:25Yeah. It's really good way to put it.
- 59:27Yeah, beautiful. I I think that I kind of lost it
- 59:32and started crying during the family meeting where they're
- 59:35talking about the nursing home situation and that discussion
- 59:39that's all of kids have with each other.
- 59:42And then, that granddaughter was my hero.
- 59:44The So they're talking about what they're going to do, right?
- 59:50The oldest son says oh we're going to take him, we're going
- 59:52to take him in. We're going to take care of him
- 59:53and that's when the sister says no.
- 59:55You know, we're going to take him in and her politician
- 59:58husband stepson. Some steps up and says it
- 1:00:00before, she can get the words out and says, no will take him.
- 1:00:04I been in these conversations. You know, I've been in these
- 1:00:08family meetings. What are we going to do?
- 1:00:10Because it's getting worse and you guys can't take care of, you
- 1:00:15know, so and so, So, it almost felt like I've been, I've been
- 1:00:19in that room and the tension, the emotions.
- 1:00:22And the fact they have kind of, to put on a different hat
- 1:00:25because you have to think logically.
- 1:00:28You cannot think emotionally, like, what are you?
- 1:00:31He cannot take care of himself. He can't stay by himself, but I
- 1:00:34work full time, right? I cannot be with him 24 hours a
- 1:00:37day and he needs 24/7 supervision.
- 1:00:39So, something's got to give Yeah, my family's from
- 1:00:44Bangladesh and there's like a big stigma about like nursing
- 1:00:48homes or let's talk. Like that's like abandoning your
- 1:00:50family and you have to be the one to take care of your family.
- 1:00:54So the Elder son was like, no, we we are the family in the
- 1:00:57sister was like, but realistically we need help.
- 1:00:59We have professional nurses or whoever to come.
- 1:01:02We either in the home or we have to sent like, you know, it was
- 1:01:05like a huge emotional battle but that struggle between logic and
- 1:01:08emotions. I thought was really well
- 1:01:09portrayed really well. Portrayed, it was a Very well
- 1:01:13written. And like you said, I come from a
- 1:01:16Hispanic culture. It's the same exact thing in our
- 1:01:19culture where the older, you get that the older generation
- 1:01:23expects that their children will take care of them in their old
- 1:01:27age, no matter what going into a nursing home is like, not an
- 1:01:30option. It's taboo.
- 1:01:32Like you don't do that. It seems like you're abandoning
- 1:01:35your family member throwing them away or something.
- 1:01:37Yes. Like just, like, putting them
- 1:01:39away in a nursing home and that's That's not the case at
- 1:01:43all. I've learned I've had to
- 1:01:45unlearn. This actually like as a as a
- 1:01:47Hispanic coming from this culture and dealing with it.
- 1:01:50Firsthand three different times. Actually, I feel completely
- 1:01:56that. It's not the case.
- 1:01:58You're not abandoning, your family member, you need help,
- 1:02:01they need help, they need specialized help, right?
- 1:02:04That is a taking care of them. Yes.
- 1:02:07Yes, give them the best care. If unless you're a trained
- 1:02:10geriatric nurse you're not going to be able to provide Vide.
- 1:02:12That care or Jared? Yes, you got it.
- 1:02:14You need to leave something. A diagnosis like this.
- 1:02:16It's not just regular aging or what?
- 1:02:18Yes. Yes.
- 1:02:19Like a different thing entirely, and they're not capable, and
- 1:02:23they're not equipped. Especially if you have a
- 1:02:24full-time job, especially don't know what you're doing in this
- 1:02:26scenario and you do need to consider something like under a
- 1:02:30home or a special facility or at least in home care.
- 1:02:34Something. Yeah, something I mean my case,
- 1:02:36if it went three different ways. So my grandfather, my
- 1:02:40grandmother swore that Take care of her husband, she's going to
- 1:02:44do it, no matter what, and she took care of him for seven
- 1:02:47years. He was bedridden and she took
- 1:02:48care of him on his own, on her, own would not recognize her at a
- 1:02:51time where recommend, because it really chipped away at her,
- 1:02:54spirit chipped away at her energy and feel like an aged her
- 1:03:01a lot more, and she needed help all the time.
- 1:03:03So, we were going over there. All the time we were moving him,
- 1:03:06you had to move them. So he wouldn't get bedsores and
- 1:03:08then he got a bed sore and it was devastating and it was all
- 1:03:10these things zero. At a time we were I commend
- 1:03:12them. My aunt got um, was it called
- 1:03:16frontotemporal dementia, which is an early onset dementia, she
- 1:03:19was in her 50s and she basically got dementia and the same thing
- 1:03:22she became bedridden and she couldn't function, and my
- 1:03:25grandmother was like, I'm going to do it all over again.
- 1:03:27I'm going to take care of him. We were like no we're not going
- 1:03:29to do that again. It went horribly, you need help.
- 1:03:32You can't deal with her on your own.
- 1:03:33So we hired a help we hired a nurse who would come and like
- 1:03:37take care of her during the day and help out and stuff.
- 1:03:40Which again I don't think that was enough at all because They
- 1:03:42didn't want the nurse to, or have another nurse to spend the
- 1:03:45night and have an overnight nurse.
- 1:03:48So it was like wild at night that because sundowning is a
- 1:03:51real thing. And then my grandmother, which
- 1:03:54was most recent, you know, P were I'm older now.
- 1:03:57So I was I had more of a say in like what the care was going to
- 1:04:01look like and I was like, you guys can't do this.
- 1:04:04I was talking to my dad, right? He's the only son left and they
- 1:04:09were doing their best. My mom was basically the Option
- 1:04:12in, in this story where she was, she married into the family and
- 1:04:16she was like, we're going to do it.
- 1:04:17We're going to take care of her and she's a sweet sentiment.
- 1:04:20Yes, that's just sweet. They, you know, it's hard
- 1:04:23because when my family, my mother's parents died young.
- 1:04:27And so the, my my father's parents, my grandmother were,
- 1:04:34they were like a second parents to her and they, it was like a,
- 1:04:38they've known each other for like over 40 years.
- 1:04:40So it was very much An emotional decision to make logically to
- 1:04:48now, is that we can't do this anymore we have to put her in a
- 1:04:50home with memory care which was a whole nother thing, right?
- 1:04:54Because there's nursing homes for people that don't have
- 1:04:56dementia and then there's Memory Care who's just like a whole
- 1:04:58nother thing. But I mean, in this case, seeing
- 1:05:01this conversation and not Valera, and seeing how they kind
- 1:05:07of like, we're like, oh, he's doing okay right now, like we
- 1:05:11can take care of him. I'm like again, this is when I
- 1:05:13was like, you don't understand. It's like Progressive, like they
- 1:05:17will not be able to maintain this.
- 1:05:20Like he will not remember the moment where he forgets them in
- 1:05:25the final episode. And it's the day, D-Day, the day
- 1:05:29of the performance. And he forgets, everybody
- 1:05:31forgets, like, who he is forgets, how to dance?
- 1:05:34I was like. Oh no.
- 1:05:35And then, I have, I have a little bit of pessimism, like,
- 1:05:38in my view because I'm like, well who knows when he'll
- 1:05:42return. And like, be able to remember
- 1:05:45everything and the families face when they the relief and joy,
- 1:05:50when he recognizes them finally, for I found that heartbreaking,
- 1:05:53most people would be like, oh yes.
- 1:05:54He can do it. He can, he can dance in the, in
- 1:05:58the Showcase. And I'm like, oh no girl.
- 1:06:00Like because you this is heartbreaking lab because there
- 1:06:05is no doubt in my mind that this is going to happen more
- 1:06:08frequently. And the times when he remembers
- 1:06:11them is going to be less. And Les.
- 1:06:13It was so sad. So to me it was it was sad.
- 1:06:16It was heartbreaking. It was like, it's weird as a
- 1:06:20viewer. And you're just thinking of the
- 1:06:22these characters are like I want to see the dance like a crazed,
- 1:06:24right? We build up to this but yeah, I
- 1:06:29and then it was so heartbreaking.
- 1:06:30When he couldn't recognize his wife he couldn't recognize Chau
- 1:06:32doc, he didn't remember ballet and then he like the he was sort
- 1:06:36of getting it again and they're like all right you gotta like
- 1:06:38remember and he's like it's so much pressure.
- 1:06:40I feel like that level of stress on someone who's going through
- 1:06:43it. This is like, this would kind of
- 1:06:44exacerbate their symptoms, almost more.
- 1:06:46So I was like, and I was a moment from your, like, this is
- 1:06:49realistic. I don't know.
- 1:06:49But we're in dromoland. So I'll just like go with it,
- 1:06:53right? Yeah.
- 1:06:54Speaking of things that are in dromoland, I noticed that song
- 1:06:57kong was using chopsticks with his left hand.
- 1:07:01And then when he wrote the like spell quote-unquote in the
- 1:07:05ballet, shoe for heart emoji, he was using his right hand to the
- 1:07:09right and I was like, wait is song I made extras.
- 1:07:14He could just like I know some people were like trying to do
- 1:07:16some random things with their right hand, so maybe that's all
- 1:07:18it was there like it's school, maybe he was because I was
- 1:07:20actually born left-handed and my parents read us.
- 1:07:23Something in the news about like studies show left-handed
- 1:07:25children, blah, blah, whatever, adults grow up to something.
- 1:07:28So they're like, oh, you're switching Jeremy into the have
- 1:07:30to like train me. So you know, you ain't happy
- 1:07:34necessarily ambidextrous but maybe he liked.
- 1:07:36What was told at school, you gotta write with your right.
- 1:07:37Oh yeah, I've heard of that happening.
- 1:07:41I actually the only thing that I do Lefty is Play pool.
- 1:07:47I don't know why. And I didn't learn like I wasn't
- 1:07:49like, someone's gonna teach me how to play pool is like a
- 1:07:51natural like this feels comfortable.
- 1:07:53I can control it like this is just and I don't know why if you
- 1:07:58if anyone is listening out there and it's like I can do things
- 1:08:01with my right hand and I can't do with my left hand vice versa.
- 1:08:04Let us know like, how are you? Oddly ambidextrous.
- 1:08:09Yeah. Is there anything else that you
- 1:08:11would like to say about novel era?
- 1:08:14Cuz we're coming up on like the end of the show was wanted to
- 1:08:17touch on TED Talks coach the former famous ballarino himself
- 1:08:22who had a back injury. Yes, whole deal with his ex-wife
- 1:08:26/ new wife, and that was a very strange part.
- 1:08:30Like a person to me, I didn't know how to feel about him.
- 1:08:32It seemed like Jack was hiding his struggles with.
- 1:08:35Like, you know, I'm alone. I'm trying to live on my own.
- 1:08:37I have multiple jobs. He wasn't telling him.
- 1:08:39And I was like, what about China?
- 1:08:41Iraq? Did this ballarino guy, fine.
- 1:08:43So, like he said, It. But we didn't like see it or if
- 1:08:45we did we didn't like, come through to me that.
- 1:08:47This was like amazing dance. Work for like a almost untrained
- 1:08:50child, but he like took him under his wing and he's like,
- 1:08:53this is my protege. I was like, but why?
- 1:08:55And then he like how this whole deal with his ex-wife and I was
- 1:08:57like, but why? And then you know he was famous
- 1:09:00and then his like career engine mated show like any almost any
- 1:09:03of his like struggles with that depression or whatever feelings
- 1:09:07you might have had after that he just was like.
- 1:09:09Anyway now I have this Ballet company and I was just like,
- 1:09:12what are you doing with this guy?
- 1:09:13He seemed Fine. But yeah I agree I thought that
- 1:09:17they again a half-baked the subplot with this guy and his
- 1:09:20background where I didn't quite understand like what was
- 1:09:24happening until like the later episodes where he was like I was
- 1:09:28in a rut. I got this injury, I tried to
- 1:09:31dance through it, and it ended up ending my career and not.
- 1:09:34So he had like an identity crisis, an existential crisis
- 1:09:38and then song came into the picture.
- 1:09:40So I was like, oh, he was dancing until like recently,
- 1:09:42then, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:44All happened so fast. It's like Revelation about
- 1:09:46exactly how this all went down was very, very fast in one
- 1:09:49episode and I was like, oh there's like no, like builds up
- 1:09:52or like it's not about him. I get that the show is not about
- 1:09:54him, but it was weird. I also I did appreciate that for
- 1:09:57Navi Lera. How there was like this sort of
- 1:10:00it was kind of diverse. There's like an elder person
- 1:10:02trying to do ballet. There was that Valley company
- 1:10:04that had like the wheelchair use.
- 1:10:06Yes. Yeah.
- 1:10:08That was really cool but I thought it was weird and kind of
- 1:10:11fun. Likely that really?
- 1:10:13Very little was About men in ballet.
- 1:10:15There was no, like, the bully wasn't bullying him about that.
- 1:10:18That's like, like, boy him about that.
- 1:10:20Maybe like a fire here. They didn't really make that the
- 1:10:24girls. It was not weird, no one was
- 1:10:25weird. And I feel like in Korea, maybe
- 1:10:28people would be more, like, they didn't talk about like the
- 1:10:32gender politics of it. Yeah.
- 1:10:34Yeah. We're all about the al-jalil.
- 1:10:37Yeah. You too old to do ballet.
- 1:10:38Okay fine. But then almost like glossed
- 1:10:41over gendered stuff. You are Lately.
- 1:10:44Right? Because I think that's more
- 1:10:46realistic than probably a lot of the other subplots that they had
- 1:10:49going on and what they were bullying.
- 1:10:52Like the bully bully was like bullying out in a very complex
- 1:10:56way, like, a complex reason for the bully.
- 1:10:58And I was like, no, man, simplify simplify, I wonder if
- 1:11:02the webtoon kind of delves into this more.
- 1:11:04I didn't read. All right, right?
- 1:11:06Yeah. No, I didn't either.
- 1:11:07I forgot to mention that in the first half, but I agree.
- 1:11:10The Bullying could have been a little more traditional, So I
- 1:11:15find me, that's why I found it odd, very distracting and the
- 1:11:18fact that they kind of divulged the reasons for some of these
- 1:11:20things, very late in the game. I was like, when I don't even
- 1:11:22care, I like accepted that this bullies weird.
- 1:11:24I've accepted that this Coach Guy like, kind of cares.
- 1:11:27What charge? What kind of doesn't care about,
- 1:11:28you know, and I kind of was just like at peace with these things
- 1:11:31and then I'm like, oh this is why I like this is what
- 1:11:33happened. I'm like, oh yeah, I forgot.
- 1:11:34I care about that for a second ago.
- 1:11:38I agree and I think we've been bashing the show a lot more than
- 1:11:41I like intended to bash it but This show, genuinely it's worth
- 1:11:46watching. I would recommend it to people.
- 1:11:49It has a lot of this. I think we mentioned this in the
- 1:11:53my mr. Episode.
- 1:11:54But like this Korean concept of Jang which is like a kindred
- 1:11:57spirit, someone you're not related to by Blood who seems to
- 1:12:02have the strange connection with you.
- 1:12:03And that is the relationship between songs Chadwick and the
- 1:12:07hot Emoji. Like they have this like weird
- 1:12:10sort of connection where they understand each other and
- 1:12:12they're almost like Two sides of the same coin they're like soul
- 1:12:16mates, there's so many, there's so many, it's essentially like
- 1:12:19that's the only equivalent of this relationship is just saying
- 1:12:23that they're, they're soul mates.
- 1:12:25And that's why I like this show is that this one that's why I,
- 1:12:29like, my odds are she choose the same thing, right?
- 1:12:31Like you just said, it's like, sometimes in dramas, I love
- 1:12:34romance. Dramas don't get me wrong but
- 1:12:36it's kind of nice to see like there's nothing romantic going
- 1:12:38on, but it's very deep and intimate.
- 1:12:40Anyway, or I guess in Majesty, there's like some sort of like
- 1:12:43mini man. But it was it's more like this
- 1:12:48intimacy. That is very much unspoken.
- 1:12:50It's not like super outward and they both are feeling at the
- 1:12:53same time and I think about that in real life like the energy
- 1:12:56vibrations like between them must have been like really so
- 1:13:00intense and The Chemistry Between the actors are so good.
- 1:13:02Like I was totally buying that. Check was friends with like a
- 1:13:05seven-year-old, man. He's right there.
- 1:13:06He's. Yeah.
- 1:13:07He's buddies. His best friend.
- 1:13:08Like the 73-year old. And the an even when.
- 1:13:11Huh? Demony like adopts charak
- 1:13:12immediately. She's like, okay, you're my And
- 1:13:14so now and I was like this is this is so hard, it's precious.
- 1:13:17It's precious. This show goes out to all the
- 1:13:19dreamers out there who want to pursue something that seems like
- 1:13:22a pipe dream that seems unlikely.
- 1:13:24That seems like you have no Talent.
- 1:13:26You shouldn't be wasting your time.
- 1:13:28This one goes out for all of you, all of us like there's so
- 1:13:32many quotes in here, like, just trust yourself and keep going
- 1:13:36happiness. Could be felt in the little
- 1:13:37details. You don't always have to achieve
- 1:13:39something Grand, even if you make a mistake.
- 1:13:41Don't stop. Just keep going.
- 1:13:42It's like Is like a love letter to the struggle, to the Grind,
- 1:13:47to trying something new, and it's beautiful.
- 1:13:52It's very encouraging. And I like that about the show,
- 1:13:54the just like the Grandeur themes of it, where you don't
- 1:13:59have to be a young spring chicken to learn ballet, which
- 1:14:02is a highly technical athletic performance art and your goal
- 1:14:08doesn't have to be like Prima ballerina, right?
- 1:14:11Of blah, blah blah like yeah, that is a good goal because it
- 1:14:13but now, I'm ready. Gonna make that, you know, get
- 1:14:15there. And so just pursue is only for
- 1:14:16the sake of pursuing, it is also valuable.
- 1:14:19Yeah, I loved that part of the show, I loved that, you know,
- 1:14:24don't give up all of these like almost mantras that the show
- 1:14:29explores and talks directly to the audience at times.
- 1:14:32It feels like in some of the dialogue.
- 1:14:34Feels like it's like fourth wall breaking because they're true.
- 1:14:37It's like so uplifting and they're speaking directly to you
- 1:14:41the audience. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:43Seems like That. Yeah.
- 1:14:46And then of course they put on all these extra clothes with all
- 1:14:50of the other subplots and it was too much man.
- 1:14:53And I did I just still don't get why it's best friend, like, it
- 1:14:56was like the worst best friend ever or like he was the worst
- 1:14:58best friend to him, like he was like, what is this relationship?
- 1:15:01But but yeah, he had a lot more love than he felt like he had
- 1:15:05and I thought that was interesting to show because he
- 1:15:08was so alone, but he wasn't. And then the new friends, the
- 1:15:11found family aspect of it with a hot about Gee.
- 1:15:14But then how do I took him in immediately the his play cousin
- 1:15:17his like, you know, his daughter but she's granddaughter.
- 1:15:21That also was really touching. I thought, yeah, I thought nah,
- 1:15:26Valletta means something in Spanish because to me when I
- 1:15:28read I was like, oh, it says kind of side of it's a maybe
- 1:15:32it's a Spanish word or something.
- 1:15:33No, it's not. It's a Korean word that combines
- 1:15:36the word for butterfly with an old literary suffix.
- 1:15:39And it roughly translates to like a butterfly.
- 1:15:42Yes. A flask.
- 1:15:47God sorry. Not this time the Spanish
- 1:15:49Korean. Oh yeah.
- 1:15:50No drama crossover as Annabella. Yeah it'll happen one day but
- 1:15:55not yet. Yeah, no.
- 1:15:56This was not it but I love that the word has something to do
- 1:16:00with a butterfly and then there was a lot of aspects of the show
- 1:16:03where they said a lot of dialogue, where they said, did
- 1:16:05you soar? He's going to soar like an eagle
- 1:16:08and just representing that sort of potential that is within both
- 1:16:13of them both songs character and the hot emoji.
- 1:16:16I also like that they talked a lot about like how important is
- 1:16:19to practice basic steps. Even if you're a pro even if
- 1:16:22you're like the the best ballerina and Korea like you
- 1:16:26still have to practice the based you to go back to basics and not
- 1:16:29neglect, how important that is or not neglect your body.
- 1:16:32Like when the ballerina Coach Guy, ballerina coach guy was
- 1:16:36injured but he like dance through it.
- 1:16:37Like those are all lessons. So many lessons in this show.
- 1:16:39Yes, it's lesson heavy but I like it.
- 1:16:42That's what I like preachy way. No, no Ricci!
- 1:16:45No, no, just encourage. It's touching, it's touching and
- 1:16:48also butterfly. I know you haven't watched
- 1:16:50nevertheless but butterfly, nevertheless are directly
- 1:16:53related and there's something about a tattoo and there's a
- 1:16:56like I don't want to say nothing much but I don't want to spoil
- 1:16:59nevertheless but it's very fitting that this novel era also
- 1:17:05means like a butterfly for some time.
- 1:17:08Netflix. Son of Netflix Hong Kong, son of
- 1:17:11Netflix. Okay, I think I've reached the
- 1:17:15end of my notes. Did you have anything?
- 1:17:16Thinking, oh my God. Oh my God, the sewing gook cameo
- 1:17:20in episode. I know I was like, is that
- 1:17:22something good? Is that him?
- 1:17:23Is that him? Like I was having a moment?
- 1:17:25I was like, am I hallucinating this?
- 1:17:27Yeah, that was great. Yes, I freaked out and I'll tell
- 1:17:30you something. I didn't think that I was such a
- 1:17:32sewing, good fan. But every time like, he walked
- 1:17:34into the room and you don't even see his face.
- 1:17:38I just saw like silhouette like the his body and I was like is
- 1:17:40that sawing? Gook apparently.
- 1:17:42I know him by like the shape of his General body.
- 1:17:45So I was like, Huh? I always liked impressed with
- 1:17:48myself that I was like, oh God, it's something good.
- 1:17:51And they hadn't even done any close-ups on him yet, so kudos
- 1:17:54to me for being a closet. Songo Super Fan apparently.
- 1:18:00Yeah, that was, I was going to also mention that Taemin OST cuz
- 1:18:04I love him and I, it was like a such a easy breezy little song.
- 1:18:08It wasn't like, it wasn't like Taemin doing all his like
- 1:18:10Tammany stuff, but it was like, it was like a sweet song.
- 1:18:16And his voice is really soothing in that song.
- 1:18:19And so that to me, that was like a its own Cameo, right?
- 1:18:21Taemin. So, I can cook just like
- 1:18:23stealing the scenes. Yes, thank you for that.
- 1:18:29The 10-minute this one goes on. Yes, beautiful, all around.
- 1:18:34Is there anything else that you would like to add about Neville?
- 1:18:37Er, um, I wanted to add a little bit about the webtoon writers.
- 1:18:42What they said is something about doing ballet.
- 1:18:45So, the webtoon writer There's who also were part of the drama
- 1:18:49creation or production or something they mentioned.
- 1:18:52So this is from an article I'm just going to quote it.
- 1:18:54It says Park of just parking on the person who played Hadji is
- 1:18:5876 years old. Okay, so side note, he's playing
- 1:19:01a seven year old but he was 76 and he does not look 76 whenever
- 1:19:04that might not look like this on that.
- 1:19:06But anyway it says Park is 76 years old and while he may have
- 1:19:08found the ballet seems difficult to Han said that he didn't want
- 1:19:11to cast a younger actor and you special makeup because he
- 1:19:14thought it was important to get across the line.
- 1:19:16Lifetime's worth of wisdom through each word and wrinkle of
- 1:19:19the actor. He added that he had.
- 1:19:20No doubt that part could pull it off and then for his part.
- 1:19:25Yeah, so cute. And I also appreciate like
- 1:19:27again, reading, bringing more diversity and everything into
- 1:19:30kdramas is always important. So been considering like an
- 1:19:33elder actors. Postal like aging young actor, I
- 1:19:36thought was important and so park in one himself said in
- 1:19:39another interview. He just I thought this was
- 1:19:41funny. He said it was challenging
- 1:19:45enough that I had to wear ballet.
- 1:19:46If it's that stuck to my body and park, when you become my
- 1:19:50age, it's hard to exercise because your body gets stiffer.
- 1:19:53I took on the challenge as if I was ductile and trying something
- 1:19:55new. So I thought that was really
- 1:19:57cool. Yeah, he also has granddaughters
- 1:19:59like laughed at him at the thought of him like doing ballet
- 1:20:01but that now they just keep playing it all his about Lacey.
- 1:20:03Oh, that's adorable. That's adorable.
- 1:20:08Yeah, thanks for sharing that. That's beautiful.
- 1:20:11And that, you know what, I was kind of right though, because it
- 1:20:13sounds like he was a little bit self-conscious about Out the
- 1:20:17tight clothing that he wore. Yeah.
- 1:20:19I mean, I know all times in Korea.
- 1:20:20A lot of men in leotards, our Tides will put on like shorts
- 1:20:23over it anyway. So yeah, I think like culturally
- 1:20:26yeah, that might have been a consideration but I did think to
- 1:20:28maybe they were because they could have just done my laughs
- 1:20:31eat close-ups me didn't really do that as much either as I
- 1:20:33thought they might. So maybe like a combination of
- 1:20:36like modesty and we're not professionals out here.
- 1:20:41Yeah, well if that's all you have for Neville era, I
- 1:20:45definitely. Thank you so much for coming on
- 1:20:48and providing so much Insight. You did research for this which
- 1:20:51is amazing. Not only like watching all this,
- 1:20:55all these hours of Television but coming on and being so
- 1:20:57prepared. I want to thank you so much.
- 1:20:59I hope you had a great time I did.
- 1:21:01Okay, yeah, I love your podcast. So, you know, where can we find
- 1:21:06you online? For those who don't know, I'm on
- 1:21:09Twitter at Kpop bookshelf. And I'm on Instagram.
- 1:21:11I think it's Kpop bookshelf, pot, I don't know.
- 1:21:13I forgot already like what my yeah, those are there Lil Bit.
- 1:21:16On each but I'm on Instagram more than Twitter.
- 1:21:18I can tell you that. So yeah, yes.
- 1:21:21And you have wonderful book, recommendations, obviously,
- 1:21:23because you're your podcast is about reading the book and then
- 1:21:26discussing the book and I actually bought one of the books
- 1:21:29that you recommended. It was like, yeah, the Korea, a
- 1:21:32history book, and a beautiful cover on it.
- 1:21:35I think you like, you got the hardback and I got the pipe, got
- 1:21:37to pay for back because that was like the only expensive
- 1:21:40expensive. But like I was like, so in love
- 1:21:43with the cover and I was like, oh yeah.
- 1:21:44I want to read about Korean history from like An actual
- 1:21:47expert and I think a lot of Kpop and kdrama fans and not to say
- 1:21:50this is good or bad, but sometimes we are a little bit
- 1:21:52superficial about our knowledge of Korea and were just like
- 1:21:55yeah. Ramyun.
- 1:21:56And Cho are like you take like weird little like to pop
- 1:21:58culture, a things and run with it and I am someone who is
- 1:22:02likely what are they eating? What are they doing?
- 1:22:03What's the seonbae? Like I have like a thousand
- 1:22:05question so I was like I wanted to start the pockets as a way
- 1:22:08for me to learn about Korean culture in a more in-depth way
- 1:22:11so that gives better context to what I'm consuming from a media
- 1:22:13standpoint. So beautiful love to hear it.
- 1:22:17I love it. Thank you so much for coming on
- 1:22:19the show again. Well, that's been our show.
- 1:22:22I'm Jessica and this has been the ATC presents daebak.
