- 0:00This is a difficult part of the Scripture where there's a lot
- 0:05going on as we lead into the coming of Jesus Christ to the
- 0:11Americas, which is going to be preceded by all that death and
- 0:14destruction in 35 chapters 8 and 9 and 10.
- 0:18The reality is this book is written for our day sometimes.
- 0:24Here's what happens in a gospel learning setting.
- 0:28We go through life and we face trials and tribulations and
- 0:33temptations and adversities and problems.
- 0:36And then we say, OK, I need to go to church or I need to study
- 0:41my scriptures or I need to do spiritual things.
- 0:46And it's almost like we have this mindset of I need to check
- 0:49my problems at the door, come in and relax for a minute in a
- 0:55scriptural setting or a sacrament meeting setting, or
- 0:59even in some cases in a temple setting.
- 1:01And that works. But there's nothing wrong with
- 1:04that. What we're inviting you to do
- 1:06today, however, is the total opposite of that.
- 1:10Just try it. Try an experiment.
- 1:12Try not checking your problems, your temptations, your
- 1:18tribulations, your struggles at the door.
- 1:21Try bringing them with you into this lesson, all the baggage,
- 1:27and put it with you on the the table in front of you with the
- 1:31scriptures. And as we go through the
- 1:33scriptures, keep a prayer in your heart that the Lord will
- 1:36help you make sense of this baggage, that He'll help you see
- 1:40it from an eternal perspective using principles that you learn
- 1:45on the scripture page as they apply directly to your life and
- 1:50your unique set of challenges and struggles.
- 1:53We've shared earlier in the year this concept that I learned from
- 1:57a dear sister, Cheryl Bettenson up in Brigham City years and
- 2:01years ago. This concept that she shared
- 2:03with me that sometimes when she would be reading her scriptures,
- 2:07her mind would wander and she'd feel bad and come back to the
- 2:12scripture page saying, oh, I'm sorry, my mind wandered.
- 2:15And then start reading again, but this time with the mindset
- 2:19of what did my mind wander to? What was I so concerned about
- 2:24that pulled my thoughts away from the scripture page?
- 2:27She would bring that problem front and center back into that
- 2:31same scripture page, looking for principles to help her deal with
- 2:35that thing. And that has been a huge
- 2:39blessing in my life as I've applied that.
- 2:42And we invite you to do that very thing here today as we move
- 2:47forward into this particular block of scripture.
- 2:49So whatever those struggles, those challenges that you're
- 2:52facing that you're wrestling with, whatever they may be,
- 2:55bring them. And let's see if we can find
- 2:59heaven's help as we work our way through these, through these
- 3:04principles. I also want to share a little
- 3:06quote from Neil A Maxwell. How can you and I really expect
- 3:11to glide naively through life as if to say, Lord, give me
- 3:17experience, but not grief, not sorrow, not pain, not
- 3:23opposition, not betrayal, and certainly not to be forsaken.
- 3:27Keep for me, Lord, all those experiences which made thee what
- 3:32thou art. Then let me come and dwell with
- 3:36thee and fully share thy joy. Brothers and sisters, life is a
- 3:41test. Life is a trial, and we're going
- 3:43to see that in 35 one through 7 in in an accelerated way.
- 3:49There are challenges and there are difficulties that hit us
- 3:53right out of the the chute in chapter 1.
- 3:56This incredible prophet, Nephi, the son of Nephi, is now in
- 4:01charge of, of leading and guiding these people.
- 4:04But he's in a society that has lost a great degree of religious
- 4:10freedom. Some of you have probably heard
- 4:13in the last 10 years some of our prophets and apostles speaking
- 4:17very, very openly and urgently about our need to defend
- 4:21religious freedom. And maybe some of you have
- 4:24wondered why, Why are they making such a big deal of this?
- 4:27It's it's not that that big of an issue.
- 4:31When you read the Book of Mormon, you see what happens
- 4:34when religious freedom is eroded and when it's eventually pretty
- 4:39much gone. Now in this culture, these
- 4:43people who believe the prophecies of Samuel the
- 4:47Lamanite from five years previous, notice verse 9.
- 4:52It came to pass that there was a day set apart by the unbelievers
- 4:57that all those who believed in those traditions should be put
- 5:01to death, except the sign should come to pass which had been
- 5:04given by Samuel the prophet. Human beings collectively are
- 5:08capable of great atrocities. This is one of them, where a
- 5:14group gets together and they say, if we haven't seen the
- 5:16sign, then everybody who believes that Samuel Lamanite
- 5:19was a true prophet, then we're going to put him to death.
- 5:23That's what happens when you lose religious freedom is you
- 5:26can now be killed for belief, for faith, and for hope, and for
- 5:32this religious perspective on life.
- 5:35Let's talk about heavenly versus earthly perspective for just a
- 5:41moment here. In this particular context,
- 5:44let's make clear what we know and what we don't know.
- 5:46If this is a calendar, a Nephite calendar and we don't, they're
- 5:53not using a Gregorian calendar. Everybody's, everybody
- 5:56understands that they have marked a day on their calendar
- 6:00when all believers in Samuel Lamanites prophecies and in the
- 6:04tradition of their fathers, everyone who believes in all of
- 6:08that, they're going to get killed on that day.
- 6:11What we don't know clearly from the text, it doesn't tell us
- 6:14exactly is where is it that they have, How far in advance have
- 6:20they set that date on the calendar?
- 6:21Was it a month down the road? Was it a week down the road?
- 6:24Was it 5 months down there? We don't know that.
- 6:26It doesn't tell us very clearly. So we don't know where it is
- 6:30leading up to that date where Nephi goes and has this
- 6:34experience, this great prophet goes out and pours out his heart
- 6:36to God. Let me clarify here.
- 6:38Let me be clear, this theoretical date on our little
- 6:42theoretical calendar is the date that they're going to kill all
- 6:45the believers. But we don't know for sure which
- 6:48day Nephi has his prayer when he's told the on the Morrow,
- 6:52come I end of the world. It could have been here, it
- 6:54could have been there. It could have been here, it
- 6:57could have been here on the Morrow come I end of the world.
- 7:00We just don't know where those two events line up.
- 7:03But it it feels like it's clustered together.
- 7:07Now, why would that be important?
- 7:10Because from a heavenly perspective, God knows perfectly
- 7:16all things, when they're going to happen, how they're going to
- 7:19play out. But we don't, we don't have that
- 7:23view. Even Nephi, this great prophet,
- 7:26doesn't know all the details. It's not like because he's the
- 7:31prophet, this, this declaration is made.
- 7:35We're going to kill all believers.
- 7:36And by the way, if he's the prophet, he's the one who's
- 7:38going to probably witness it all and then be the final one
- 7:41killed. They're probably going to make
- 7:42the biggest deal of him. It's not as if he says, oh,
- 7:46well, I'm not even remotely. We're everybody just relax.
- 7:49It's OK. It's not going to happen.
- 7:52He didn't do that. He's, he's concerned for his
- 7:55people. Look at verse 11.
- 7:56It came to pass that he went out and bowed himself upon the earth
- 8:00and he cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people.
- 8:06By the way, you'll notice a pattern there.
- 8:07That's very Christ like. He wasn't crying in behalf of
- 8:10himself. He was crying in behalf of his
- 8:14people. There's something very Christ
- 8:16like, very mediating about that. Yeah.
- 8:19Those who are about to be destroyed because of their faith
- 8:21in the tradition of their fathers.
- 8:23And it came to pass that he cried mightily unto the Lord all
- 8:28that day. So he goes out in the in the
- 8:32morning hours and he pours out his heart to God.
- 8:36And those minutes and those hours tick by and he's pouring
- 8:40out his heart to God. And it says that he poured out
- 8:44his heart all that day until finally, at the end of the day,
- 8:50the voice comes and gives him the answer.
- 8:53Brothers and sisters, the question begs asking here, why?
- 8:58Why would God do that to such a good, faithful, righteous,
- 9:04obedient servant who who's so turned outward His heart's in
- 9:09the right place. He's a good guy.
- 9:11Why would God make him pour out his heart all day?
- 9:15Why not have him come out, kneel down initially, pour out his
- 9:19heart, and God instantly say, it's OK Nephi, you don't need to
- 9:24worry anymore. I don't need to stretch this out
- 9:27any longer. Why not upfront?
- 9:30Why make him pray all day? One more quote from Elder Neil
- 9:34Maxwell. When we are unduly impatient
- 9:38with an omniscient God's timing, we really are suggesting that we
- 9:43know what's best. Strange, isn't it?
- 9:46We who wear wristwatches seek to counsel him who overseas cosmic
- 9:52clocks and calendars. On another occasion, Ellen
- 9:56Maxwell said something along the lines of sometimes it's easier
- 9:59to say, Lord, thy will be done than it is to say, Lord, thy
- 10:03timing be done. Brothers and sisters, let's just
- 10:07let's break this down for a moment.
- 10:09What happens if God answers his prayer right there?
- 10:15If he he kneels down and initially says, Lord, what do we
- 10:18do? My people are going to be
- 10:20destroyed. And God says, peace, Nephi, it's
- 10:23done. What is the difference between
- 10:26Nephi walking away from that experience versus the Nephi
- 10:31walking home and back to his people from that experience?
- 10:35Years ago I was sitting on the couch with one of my daughter's
- 10:39and she was wrestling with something.
- 10:40She was only 12 years old at the time and she had been wrestling
- 10:44with this thing for two, 3-4 months.
- 10:47I don't remember exactly, but it was months.
- 10:49No answer had come. I was starting to get concerned
- 10:52about this 12 year old girl's faith and I asked her how are
- 10:55you feeling about your relationship with God?
- 10:58And her response was dad. I'm learning to trust him more
- 11:04because I'm having to stretch more.
- 11:06I'm having to to really evaluate what I what I really want most
- 11:13and it's causing me to trust God more.
- 11:15I love that moment being taught by my 12 year old daughter that
- 11:19just because I don't get answers when I want them how I want them
- 11:24doesn't mean that I have to throw up my hands in in
- 11:27exasperation and say we'll find be that way.
- 11:29I see if I talk to you again, which is the the spiritual
- 11:33spoiled brat part of my carnal nature that sometimes wants to
- 11:38come out as a reaction versus that quiet, reflective, deep,
- 11:45deep rooted faith and hope in Christ that says I'm going to
- 11:51keep digging. I'm going to keep searching.
- 11:54I'm going to keep pouring out my heart because I want to know
- 11:59what's true. I want to know what's right.
- 12:02I love the fact that an infinite God knows better about timing
- 12:09than a mortal like me who's bound by wristwatches and
- 12:12clocks, that sometimes God delays an answer way longer than
- 12:18we think he should. But He has good reasons.
- 12:20And this is an opportunity for us to exercise faith and trust
- 12:24in Him. And that's exactly what Nephi's
- 12:26doing. He didn't give up half at noon.
- 12:28He didn't give up at 4:00 in the afternoon.
- 12:30He kept pouring his heart out all that day.
- 12:33And by the way, I don't think this is the only time that
- 12:36Nephi's been pouring out his heart.
- 12:37I think he's got a pattern of pouring out his heart and
- 12:40trusting in the Lord. And I want to be more like that.
- 12:43Notice verse 13. Lift up your head and be of good
- 12:47cheer, for behold the time is at hand, and on this night the sign
- 12:54shall be given. And on the Morrow come I into
- 12:57the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all
- 13:00that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of My
- 13:02prophets. Behold, I come unto my own to
- 13:05fulfill all things which I have made known unto the children of
- 13:08men from the foundation of the world, and to do the will both
- 13:12of the Father and of the Son. I find it fascinating that the
- 13:17very first thing that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the
- 13:23Creator of the heavens and the earth, the first thing he does
- 13:27on his entrance to the world, in his great condescension from
- 13:31heaven to mortality, the first thing he does is he performs the
- 13:36miracle of a day and a night and a day with no darkness in the
- 13:43Americas. Consequently, what happens is an
- 13:46entire group of people who were sentenced to death, they are
- 13:51saved. One of our favorite titles for
- 13:54Jesus is the Savior. I love the fact that the very
- 13:59first thing he does, even just in his miraculous birth and this
- 14:06miraculous sign in the heavens, the first thing he does is he
- 14:09saves. He saves an entire group of
- 14:11people from death, and this beautiful lens through which we
- 14:16can then see what he's going to do for all of us, ultimately
- 14:20save us from not just death, but from the darkness of hell as
- 14:25well. That is his mission, and that's
- 14:27how he begins his life. Nephi shows us a beautiful
- 14:32example here. He's facing the challenges, the
- 14:36struggles of his day, of his family, of his people, and of
- 14:40his society and culture. There have been many challenges
- 14:44before him in the Book Mormon, and there are going to be some
- 14:47incredible challenges after this chapter.
- 14:50But I love the fact that he's he's taking the struggles that
- 14:54have been given to him and he's taking those to the Lord and
- 14:58working through them. One other quote to share with
- 15:01you this from JRR Tolkien in the book The Return of the King.
- 15:05Listen to this. It is not our part to master all
- 15:10the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succor
- 15:15of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the
- 15:21fields that we know, so that those who live after may have
- 15:26clean earth. To till what?
- 15:28Whether they shall have is not ours to rule.
- 15:33So rather than being overwhelmed by all the questions of
- 15:37uncertainty in the future, we just do the best we can to till
- 15:42and to clean up and to produce in that little plot of earth
- 15:45that God has given us as individuals and as families to
- 15:49work on so that those who come after us will have a better
- 15:53opportunity to grow and progress in life as well.
- 15:58Now here's the grand irony. The sign is given Samuel, the
- 16:02Lamanite and all these believers, They're vindicated.
- 16:04And you would think such an astronomical sign should
- 16:07convince everybody for generations to come.
- 16:12Well, look what happens. Verse 21.
- 16:15It came to pass also that a new star did appear according to the
- 16:19Word. And it came to pass that from
- 16:21this time forth there began to be lying sent forth among the
- 16:24people by Satan to harden their hearts to the intent that they
- 16:27might not believe in those signs and wonders which they had seen.
- 16:32But notwithstanding these lying and deceiving, the more part of
- 16:35the people did believe, and were converted unto the Lord.
- 16:38So good. But there are those who aren't
- 16:40believing. Now look at this verse 26.
- 16:44Thus the 90 and 2nd year did pass away.
- 16:47So the sign was given in that 90 and 2nd year and verse 27 it
- 16:50came to pass in the 90 and 3rd year did also pass away in
- 16:53peace, save it were for the Gadiant and robbers who dwelt in
- 16:56the mountains. So these people, even the
- 16:59Gadiant and robbers had seen that sign and it has no effect
- 17:02on them beyond Wow, that was kind of cool.
- 17:04And then the lines are sent forth that somehow somebody did
- 17:08something to deceive us. And so they just move on in
- 17:11their, in their slide towards greater wickedness.
- 17:16Look at verse 29. There was also a cause of much
- 17:18sorrow among the Lamanites. For behold, they had many
- 17:21children who did grow up and began to wax strong in years.
- 17:26And then notice this phrase that they became for themselves.
- 17:31They became for themselves. And they were led away by some
- 17:35who were Zoramites by their lying and their flattering words
- 17:38to join those gadiant and robbers.
- 17:40That's what happens when we give our life over to the temptations
- 17:44of the devil we become for ourselves.
- 17:48We turn inward like Satan himself did.
- 17:52It's all about me at that point. It's no longer about the people
- 17:57or my family or about others. It's about self gratification,
- 18:01self fulfillment, self actualization.
- 18:05It's all of this me, me, me perspective that is happening
- 18:09with this rising generation in this in this culture.
- 18:13Verse 30 and thus were the Lamanites afflicted also and
- 18:16began to decrease as to their faith in righteousness because
- 18:19of the wickedness of the rising generation.
- 18:23Chapter 2 is all about watching this wickedness and abominations
- 18:28increasing and the the secret combinations growing in their
- 18:32power. So we want to address a passage
- 18:35that has been confusing to a lot of people and probably has been
- 18:39misinterpreted and misapplied. Unfortunately, we often read
- 18:44scriptures through the lens of our modern day.
- 18:46Now the the scriptures were written for our day to apply to
- 18:48us, but sometimes we want to take our present circumstances
- 18:51and apply it back into the scriptures.
- 18:53And that's actually not what the scriptures tell us to do.
- 18:56Scriptures are like they want us to learn from them to apply in
- 18:59our lives. And there's this passage here in
- 19:013rd Nephi chapter 2 about the Lamanites joining with the
- 19:06Nephites. And we have these curious
- 19:09phrases. Let's look at verse 15.
- 19:11So Lamanites become Nephites and it says, and their curse was
- 19:15taken from them and their skin became white like under the
- 19:19Nephites. And their young men and their
- 19:21daughters became exceedingly fair and they were numbered
- 19:24among the Nephites and they were called Nephites.
- 19:26And when we look at the totality of the Book of Mormon, there are
- 19:30actually some interesting clues about what actually may be
- 19:33happening. Let's actually go back to 2nd
- 19:35Nephi chapter 4, verse four. And I've labeled it here on the
- 19:40board, and it talks about the blessings and curses that are
- 19:44associated with covenant keeping or covenant breaking in the land
- 19:48of promise. And this may help us understand
- 19:51partly what's going on, particularly around the cursing.
- 19:54For the Lord God has said that inasmuch as ye shall keep my
- 19:58commandments, ye shall prosper in the land.
- 20:01And inasmuch as you will not keep my commandments, ye shall
- 20:05be cut off from my presence. I can't think of a worse curse
- 20:10in this life than to not have God's presence with us.
- 20:15My nephew got baptized. It was this beautiful ceremony.
- 20:19And of course, we couldn't have everything in the church.
- 20:22And so we went out into his backyard afterwards and after
- 20:25the baptism and, and talked. The Spirit was so strong.
- 20:28And I reflected on how this young boy, Will Fowler, at age
- 20:338, had been baptized and received the gift of the Holy
- 20:37Ghost. And in that prayer we say
- 20:39received the Holy Ghost. It's this ongoing presence of
- 20:43God because we've made a covenant of baptism to be joined
- 20:46with God, to take his name upon us.
- 20:49And the promise is we will always have his presence to be
- 20:52with us if we remember him, which is again renewed in the
- 20:55sacrament. If we go back into Third Nephi
- 20:58chapter 2, that is the curse that the Lamanites had had.
- 21:03They had not made covenants with God, therefore they could not
- 21:07have His presence to abide with Him.
- 21:10And when they joined in the covenant of community of the
- 21:13Nephites, they got God's presence to abide with them.
- 21:17The curse was removed of not having God's presence with them.
- 21:22So I just want us to think about how when we look at the
- 21:25Scriptures, let's find the principles to apply to us
- 21:28instead of trying to retrograde put upon ancient peoples our
- 21:33modern day problems. Now let me just make a couple of
- 21:37other points. Now we've mentioned this before,
- 21:40and these are just proposals. We don't have final
- 21:41confirmation, but it is interesting that the best
- 21:44scholarship suggests that the word Nephi is an Egyptian word
- 21:49that means beautiful, lovely, goodly, and the word fair fairs
- 21:55and beautiful. Now notice when Nephi begins his
- 21:58record. First Nephi Chapter 1 I Nephi
- 22:00having been born of Nephi or goodly or lovely beautiful fair
- 22:06parents. Notice what happens when the
- 22:08Lamanites join with the Nephites.
- 22:10It says in verse 16 the young men and young women became
- 22:14exceedingly fair. If we translate this back in
- 22:18Egyptian to be they became exceedingly Nephite and we
- 22:23actually know the Nephites are this way because of covenant
- 22:27keeping, covenant making, covenant keeping their
- 22:31countenance would have been white, but white with the beauty
- 22:36of the Spirit of God. Now if you remember back in
- 22:39first Nephi chapter 8, Nephi talked about the tree of life
- 22:42and how did he describe the fruit.
- 22:45He described the fruit of the atonement of Jesus Christ using
- 22:47words that in Egyptian were just derivations of his own name.
- 22:51He must have loved writing about this.
- 22:53The fruit was beautiful, fair and desirable, and he calls it
- 22:58white. And I'm pretty confident that
- 23:01none of the Nephites looked white like the shining fruit in
- 23:04the physical sense. But there was a sense of
- 23:07spiritual engagement because of the covenant keeping.
- 23:10So Nephi is the covenant keeper, beautiful and fair because of
- 23:14covenants. Laymen, as we've talked about in
- 23:16the past, may come from the Semitic word meaning LA Aman,
- 23:21which means not believe. No covenant that we've talked in
- 23:24the past that the word believe is actually can be seen as a
- 23:27covenantal word. So when you join in covenant,
- 23:30say baptism, you become fair, desirable, lovely and beautiful
- 23:34because you are in this current relationship with the person who
- 23:37is beautiful and desirable. You become like him, fair and
- 23:41beautiful. And that is Jesus.
- 23:43He is the one who gives us the covenant.
- 23:45I hope that perspective can help us to see, perhaps in a larger
- 23:49perspective, what may be happening in the Society of
- 23:53Nephites and Lamanites at this point, that the Lamanites are
- 23:56converting into the covenant keepers, and that we can
- 24:00consider how well are we doing at making and keeping covenants
- 24:05and thereby experiencing the full beauty and fairness that
- 24:09God has to offer. And then we get to Chapter 3,
- 24:12which is where Gideon High, the leader of the Gadiant and
- 24:16Robbers, sends a letter to Laconius, the chief judge.
- 24:20Let's analyze this, because it's amazing that Mormon would give
- 24:24us the entire letter from this terrible gadiant and robber
- 24:31leader to Laconius. But I think there's beautiful
- 24:35purpose in here for having it in the Book of Mormon.
- 24:37We can learn incredible lessons from what's in that letter and
- 24:40how Laconius responds. We can learn great lessons from
- 24:44Laconius. So look at verse 2, chapter 3.
- 24:47Notice how the letter begins. Laconius, most noble and chief
- 24:51governor of the land. It's nice to start with
- 24:53flattery. It's a nice devilish technique.
- 24:56Behold, I write this epistle unto you and do give unto you
- 24:59exceedingly great praise because of your firmness and also the
- 25:03firmness of your people in maintaining that which ye
- 25:05suppose to be your right and liberty.
- 25:10So after we've flattered you, then we start casting out seeds
- 25:14of doubt to get you to to question reality and and things
- 25:19as they really are. Yet ye do stand well as if ye
- 25:24were supported by the hand of a God in the defense of your
- 25:27liberty and your property in your country or that which ye do
- 25:31call. So you can just feel it oozing
- 25:35from this letter, these, these techniques.
- 25:39Verse 3. And it seemeth a pidion to me
- 25:41most noble laconious, that you should be so foolish and so vain
- 25:45as to suppose that you can stand against so many brave men who
- 25:50are at my command, who do now at this time stand in their arms
- 25:53and do a wait with great anxiety for the word, go down upon the
- 25:56Nephites and destroy them. So you threaten and you you
- 26:01speak condescendingly, you try to overwhelm with with numbers,
- 26:07and you paint this big picture to destroy all hope.
- 26:10Look at verse 4. And I know of their
- 26:12unconquerable spirit having proved them in the field of
- 26:15battle, and knowing of their everlasting hatred towards you
- 26:18because of the many wrongs which you have done unto them.
- 26:22Therefore, if they should come down against you, they would
- 26:24visit you with utter destruction.
- 26:27So we use all these scare tactics and lies and deception
- 26:31and and blasphemy. Therefore I have written this
- 26:33epistle, sealing it with mine own hand.
- 26:36Feeling for your welfare. I really care about you and I, I
- 26:40have your best interest in mind. We'll skip down to verse 7.
- 26:43Or in other words, yield yourselves up unto us and unite
- 26:48with us and become acquainted with our secret works and become
- 26:52our brethren, that ye may be like unto us, not our slaves,
- 26:56but our brethren and partners of all of our substance.
- 26:59Let's not be enemies anymore. Let's just combine.
- 27:02Let's become one. We'll, we'll become buddies,
- 27:04we'll be brothers and we'll we'll be gadiant and robbers
- 27:06together. If everybody becomes a gadiant
- 27:09and robber, who do we rob from? Who does the work?
- 27:15Brothers and sisters? Here's one of the the ironies of
- 27:17eternity. Evil is not self-sufficient.
- 27:21Evil is a parasite. It feeds off of other people
- 27:26doing the work, putting the effort in to to produce and grow
- 27:31things. This is an absolute lie.
- 27:35Join with us, we'll make you partners in all of our
- 27:38substance. Because at that point there is
- 27:40no more substance because nobody's doing the work.
- 27:44We're all just robbing. An evil society cannot exist
- 27:50long term. It will implode.
- 27:52It will destroy itself. He talks about how good his
- 27:56society is in verse 9 because it's of ancient date and it's
- 27:59been handed down to us. And then in verse 10, he says
- 28:02that his people are going to recover their rights and
- 28:05government. They've descended away from you
- 28:07because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights
- 28:10of government. And except you do this.
- 28:12I will avenge their wrongs. I am Gideon high.
- 28:15Rather than put tons of emphasis here and and stopping here,
- 28:20let's look at how to respond to devilish threats and these
- 28:26efforts to try to destroy society.
- 28:30Let's watch Laconius and as we watch him, let's learn latter
- 28:35day lessons from him. What does he do as you turn the
- 28:38page over at the very top? Speaking of Laconius being, the
- 28:41governor describes him as a just man and he could not be
- 28:46frightened by the demands and the threatenings of a robber.
- 28:51Brothers and sisters, God does not want us looking down in fear
- 28:56and outward in fear. He wants us looking upward in
- 29:00faith. It doesn't mean that there
- 29:02aren't bad things, doesn't mean that there aren't threatenings
- 29:04and and lyings and and violence going on around us.
- 29:08It just means don't focus on that exclusively.
- 29:11Look up in faith and trust that God knows what He's doing after
- 29:18starting this pattern of faith, not fear.
- 29:21Look at verse 13. Yeah, He sent a proclamation
- 29:23among all the people that they should gather together unto one
- 29:27place. So there's this gathering.
- 29:30You bring people in either physically or in our world
- 29:34today, virtually. We gather in verse 14.
- 29:38He caused the fortification should be built round about
- 29:41them, and the strength thereof should be exceedingly great.
- 29:44You build the fences, and in this battle that we're fighting
- 29:48today against the forces of darkness and temptation and sin,
- 29:53we can build those fortifications of faith by doing
- 29:57things like gathering our family around us and opening the
- 30:00Scriptures and tuning our ears to God's prophets and building
- 30:05up this fortification of faith. He sets guards round about them,
- 30:11verse 15. He invites them to repent of all
- 30:15their iniquities, and cry unto the Lord.
- 30:18Verse 16. So great and marvelous were the
- 30:20words and prophecies of Laconius, that they did cause
- 30:23fear to come upon all the people, and they did exert
- 30:25themselves in their might to do according to the words of
- 30:27Laconius. They jump into action verse 21,
- 30:30in the center of their lands. If you look at the map, the
- 30:34lands of Bountiful down through the capital city of Zaraheml in
- 30:37that center striped area of the land, that's where these people
- 30:41are gathering from the outer parts into the center parts of
- 30:46the land. And they fortified themselves
- 30:48and they get all their food and everything ready for seven years
- 30:52to be able to subsist. As you're looking at these
- 30:55stories with these Nephite Gadiant and robbers and the
- 30:59Nephite leaders, we have some interesting names.
- 31:01For example, we have Gid the Anhi, and then you have Gid
- 31:07Gaddoni. There's a word in Hebrew you've
- 31:10probably heard of Megiddo. It actually shows up in the word
- 31:13Armageddon, a derivation of the Hebrew word Megiddo.
- 31:16Megiddo was a fortress city in northern Israel that often got
- 31:19attacked because if you wanted to go in and and fight in
- 31:22Israel, you actually had to destroy the city 1st.
- 31:24And so it became a symbol of destruction.
- 31:26And today we use that symbolically to talk about
- 31:28destruction. Notice that this word, GID, and
- 31:31it's often the doubling of the D.
- 31:33Often any word in Hebrew that has that deals with battles and
- 31:39destructions. And I just find it kind of
- 31:40interesting here that the farm boy, Joseph Smith, some people
- 31:44think that he wrote the Book of Mormon.
- 31:46I think I've spent 25 years studying Hebrew.
- 31:49I would have a hard time coming up with this.
- 31:50It's I find it amazing that Joe Smith would have come up with
- 31:53these names that actually have to do with fighting and
- 31:55destruction. Then in Chapter 4, the gadiant
- 31:59and robbers come. There's no way for them to
- 32:02subsist out there because there aren't any people to rob
- 32:05anymore. All the people have left those
- 32:07cities. So it doesn't do them any good
- 32:09to move into the cities because nobody's working out in the
- 32:12fields and working the the flocks and the herds.
- 32:15Notice verse five came to pass in the 19th year.
- 32:18Gideon High found that it was expedient that he should go up
- 32:21to battle against the Nephites for there was no way that they
- 32:25could subsist save it were to plunder and rob and murder.
- 32:30What an existence to have to rely on murdering, robbing and
- 32:34plundering other people in order to survive and live.
- 32:40So these Gideon robbers in the sixth month, verse 7, they come
- 32:45up and look how Mormon describes it.
- 32:48Behold, great and terrible was the day that they did come up to
- 32:51battle. And they were girded about after
- 32:53the manner of robbers. And they had a lambskin about
- 32:56their noise, and they were dyed in blood.
- 32:58And their heads were shorn, and they had head plates upon them.
- 33:02And great and terrible was the appearance of the armies of
- 33:04Gideon High because of their armor and because of their being
- 33:08dyed in blood. So this huge army in this show
- 33:13of force coming up against these fortified cities, these people.
- 33:18And this battle is so bad. It describes it in verse 11.
- 33:23The battle commenced in the sixth month.
- 33:24And great and terrible was the battle thereof.
- 33:27Yeah, great and terrible was the slaughter thereof, insomuch that
- 33:31there never was known so great a slaughter among all the people
- 33:34of Lehigh since he left Jerusalem.
- 33:36This is the worst battle in the history of the book up to this
- 33:38point. They beat them, they kill Gideon
- 33:42High the robber, and then Zemnaraiha takes over.
- 33:46An interesting character in the book.
- 33:48Zemnaraiha, this Gadiantin robber who ends up dying.
- 33:54And it's the only story that I know of in the Book of Mormon
- 33:57where somebody gets hung from a tree and then they chop it down
- 34:01and there's this beautiful thing.
- 34:02Third Nephi chapter 4, verse 30. And all the people rejoice and
- 34:07cry again with one voice saying, may the God of Abraham, the God
- 34:10of Isaac, and the God of Jacob protect this people in
- 34:13righteousness, so long as they shall call on the name of their
- 34:16God for protection. And I will point out that phrase
- 34:18we've talked about in past lessons, the God of Abraham,
- 34:21Isaac, and Jacob, is a phrase to call forth the memory that God
- 34:26will preserve his people and he will keep his covenants as long
- 34:30as they're faithful. After we've we've gotten rid of
- 34:35this threat of the Ghadian robbers under Zemnaraya going
- 34:39north and and taking possession of the land northward.
- 34:43You'll notice that the people in verse 31 praised God.
- 34:48Verse 32, they cry, Hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord
- 34:52God Almighty, the Most High God. Verse 33, their hearts were
- 34:56swollen with joy. Can you see where they are on
- 34:57the pride cycle in your mind's eye?
- 34:59Then you turn over in chapter 5, verse one, there was not a
- 35:03living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in
- 35:07the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken.
- 35:10So verse three, they forsook their sins and their
- 35:13abominations and their whoredoms, and they served God
- 35:15with diligence day and night. And you're thinking, this is
- 35:18wonderful. How long does it last?
- 35:21Well, he gives you the this beautiful description in chapter
- 35:255, in the second-half of chapter 5, about how the House of Israel
- 35:30will ultimately be gathered. Now you and I get to live in the
- 35:34time frame when that prophecy is being fulfilled and will
- 35:38continue to be fulfilled and accelerate.
- 35:40Look at chapter 6. The Nephites all left that
- 35:44center part of land and they return to their own lands and
- 35:46they begin to farm and to get their crops and their flocks
- 35:51going. And they, they get green of
- 35:52every kind and their gold and their silver and their precious
- 35:54things, the north and the South that they're spreading out and
- 35:58everything's great and they're laboring.
- 36:00And you're thinking, this is wonderful.
- 36:02How long does it last? Verse 10.
- 36:04It came to pass in the 20 and 9th year.
- 36:07There began to be some disputings among the people, and
- 36:10some were lifted up unto pride and boastings because of their
- 36:12exceedingly great riches, even into great persecutions.
- 36:17For there were many merchants in the lands and lawyers and many
- 36:19officers, and they started to distinguish themselves by ranks.
- 36:24Verse 14. In the 30th year, then the
- 36:28church is broken up in all the land, except for the Lamanites,
- 36:32who were converted because they didn't fall away.
- 36:34I love that description there in verse 14.
- 36:37Now look at verse 15. Now this cause of this iniquity
- 36:39of the people was this Satan had great power under the string up
- 36:43of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing
- 36:46them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power and
- 36:49authority and riches and the vain things of the world.
- 36:52So verse 18 is where Mormon jumps in and gives you some
- 36:56description. Now they did not sin ignorantly,
- 37:00for they knew the will of God concerning them, for it had been
- 37:03taught unto them. Therefore they did willfully
- 37:06rebel against God. This is a perfect description of
- 37:10apostasy. The Greek word apostasia doesn't
- 37:14mean a falling away like it's this external.
- 37:18Oh no, things are falling away. The way we often talk about it,
- 37:22an apostasia is more of an internal hostile takeover.
- 37:27It's more of a willful rebellion against the truth.
- 37:30And that's exactly what we see going on here among these
- 37:32Nephites. It's only been a few years, and
- 37:36we've been through these incredible experiences where God
- 37:39has delivered us, and we're totally disregarding that at
- 37:42this point. So now look at verse 23.
- 37:46Now there were many of those who testified of these things
- 37:50pertaining to Christ, who testified boldly, who were taken
- 37:54and put to death secretly by the judges.
- 37:57So you still have prophets teaching, but now people are
- 38:00secretly killing them. That's where the societies has
- 38:04started to go. And then in verse 28, the old
- 38:08covenants of the devil, those secret combinations start coming
- 38:13out again. And then in Chapter 7, the chief
- 38:17judge is murdered. And verse 2, the people are
- 38:20divided one against another, and they separate one from another
- 38:23into tribes. They've overthrown the
- 38:25government, They now go into their own family tribes, their
- 38:31own little units, and every tribe appointed a chief real
- 38:36leader. And verse 7 tells us there were
- 38:39but few righteous men among them.
- 38:41Verse 8. And thus six years had not
- 38:45passed away since the more part of the people had turned from
- 38:48their righteousness like the dog to his vomit, or like the sow to
- 38:53her wallowing in the mire. Nephi continues to teach in this
- 38:59really, really awful environment.
- 39:01Look at verse 18. It came to pass that they were
- 39:04angry with him even because he had greater power than they.
- 39:07For it were not possible that they could disbelieve his words.
- 39:11For so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that
- 39:14angels did minister unto him daily.
- 39:16So he's going around and they can't disbelieve his words, but
- 39:20they hate him. They hate what he's teaching
- 39:24because they want what they want, but they don't want the
- 39:27consequences that go with the decisions that they're making.
- 39:31So consequently, only a few people in verse 21 are converted
- 39:36unto the Lord. Brothers and sisters, as we
- 39:39finish up Chapter 7, the stage is now set for the greatest
- 39:46destruction this world has ever known.
- 39:49When Jesus is going to be crucified in the Holy Land over
- 39:54here in America, those those upheavals and those disasters,
- 39:58natural disasters that are going to occur and the destruction is
- 40:03brought upon them by themselves. It's not like God is doing this
- 40:08to them. These people are setting
- 40:10themselves up for this incredible destruction.
- 40:14Now we started this lesson inviting you to bring all of
- 40:18your problems and concerns and temptations and frustrations and
- 40:22put them on the desk, so to speak, side by side with your
- 40:25scriptures as we turn to the Lord and plead for guidance and
- 40:29direction and help and inspiration.
- 40:33Even if we've been pleading for hours, for years, for decades,
- 40:38and still haven't gotten what we want, brothers and sisters, know
- 40:42that there's a God in heaven who hears every prayer.
- 40:46He may not answer them the the same way as we want them to be
- 40:49answered, but He hears them. It's one thing to know you're
- 40:53being heard. It's another thing to to
- 40:58question and wonder if you're being totally ignored.
- 41:01Just know you're not being ignored.
- 41:03Know that God knows what you're going through, and if you're
- 41:06faithful and you keep turning to Him in that faith, He will give
- 41:12you whatever is in your best interest from His eternal
- 41:16perspective according to His eternal timetables, not our
- 41:21watches and calendars. I love the Lord and I I want to
- 41:25finish by saying something we've mentioned before from the Bible.
- 41:29When you face the army of adversities and temptations that
- 41:34come at you, don't ever forget that if you have faith, they
- 41:39that be with us are far more than they that be with them.
- 41:43Thank you for your love and goodness, and we so appreciate
- 41:46who you are and your time with us today.
- 41:49Know that you're loved.
