- INTRO: The Edge of the Prairie: The High Stakes at Lone Tree Lake In late September 1862, six weeks of devastating warfare across the Minnesota River Valley hang in a fragile balance. Over 600 settlers are dead. Entire counties lie completely deserted. 269 captives remain held in Dakota camps. Colonel Henry Sibley’s 1,600 volunteers dig defensive trenches along Lone Tree Lake. They expect to march north toward the Upper Sioux Agency. They have no idea that over 700 Dakota warriors are silently gathering just beyond the bluffs. Chief Little Crow needs a decisive victory to capture provisions and force peace terms. Sibley seeks retribution. Neither commander knows that this looming confrontation will decide the war or that it will be ignited by a complete accident. ACT I: The Trap in the Grass: Internal Friction at Lone Tree Lake Colonel Henry Sibley’s column pitches camp along the eastern shore of Lone Tree Lake. Military records would later permanently misname the upcoming battle after Wood Lake, a completely different body of water lying three miles to the southwest. Sibley orders earthwork trenches and breastworks thrown up around his supply wagons and artillery. His 1,600 men prepare to march north toward the Upper Sioux Agency, completely unaware of what lies ahead. Just beyond the bluffs, 738 Dakota men assemble near Yellow Medicine Creek. Chief Little Crow demands an immediate night assault on the Union camp. Internal friction fractures the Dakota council. Peace Party leader Solomon Two Stars ridicules Little Crow’s plan as cowardly, arguing that Sibley’s big guns and spy-glasses will catch them. Solomon Two Stars and Gabriel Renville deliberately prolong the debate into the night, stalling a direct attack on the camp and forcing a radical change in tactics. The Dakota war lodge decides instead to lay a road ambush at daybreak. In the pre-dawn darkness, five hundred fighters slip into position along the Old Government Road. They weave tufts of tall prairie grass into their headdresses for disguise. They lie flat in the grass and hide in the steep, wooded creek ravine, forming a massive crescent around Sibley's planned line of march. Among Sibley’s command sit 270 of the Third Minnesota Infantry. They are unruly, eager to redeem their regiment's honor after a humiliating surrender in Tennessee. Reveille sounds at four in the morning. By seven, hundreds of unfed soldiers idle in camp. 500 warriors lie in total silence just half a mile away, waiting for the column to march into their trap. ACT II: The Ambush Sprung: How a Hungry Mistake Ignited Wood Lake On the morning of September 23, 1862, at seven o’clock, hunger snaps the chain of military discipline. A dozen unruly soldiers from the Third Minnesota Infantry decide they cannot wait for official rations. They commandeer four or five army supply wagons without permission. They head north toward the Upper Sioux Agency to forage for wild potatoes. The wagons clatter across the wooden bridge over the creek ravine. They roll out onto the high prairie. Half a mile from camp, the lead wagon veers off the dirt track. It heads straight toward 25 Dakota fighters lying flat in the tall grass. According to firsthand accounts recorded after the war, a small dog running beside the soldiers begins barking furiously at the grass. The ambush is instantly blown. Concealed warriors spring up and open fire at point-blank range to avoid being run over. Musket smoke erupts across the plain. Private Degrove Kimball falls mortally wounded in the lead wagon, while Private William McGee jumps clear to return fire. Hearing the sudden gunfire back at camp, Major Abraham Welch grabs 200 men of the Third Minnesota. He charges out into the open prairie without waiting for Colonel Sibley’s orders. Watching from a hill to the west, war leader Jerome Big Eagle feels his heart sink. An accident has completely ruined Little Crow’s master plan. Little Crow rides out, swings his blanket overhead, and gives a piercing war-whoop as scores of hidden warriors rise from the grass. Welch’s skirmish line advances a full mile before Sibley orders a positive retreat. Chaos explodes. The Third Minnesota’s bugler does not know the proper signal for retreat. Men scatter down the steep slope into the ravine as Dakota fighters converge on three sides. Major Welch falls with a shattered leg as the retreat turns into a desperate struggle for survival. ACT III: Hand-to-Hand in the Ravine: The Climax at Lone Tree Lake Disorganized and retreating down the steep banks, the men of the Third Minnesota scramble across the creek. Dakota fighters press into the ravine from both sides, pouring continuous energy into their ranks. They are met at the edge of the plateau by about forty Renville Rangers, who step up under Lieutenant James Gorman to hold the line. The Third Minnesota turns back around. Lieutenant Rollin Olin leads fifty men in a wild countercharge directly into the Dakota lines. According to regimental memoirs, Sergeant J. M. Bowler roars above the din of musketry, shouting for his men to remember their dishonor at Murfreesboro. Hand-to-hand combat erupts along the high banks. Fourteen Dakota warriors fall in rapid succession. Seeing a flanking maneuver moving down the ravine to turn his right wing, Colonel Sibley acts decisively. He orders Lieutenant Colonel William Rainey Marshall forward with five companies of the Seventh Minnesota and two from the Sixth. Captain Hendricks brings a six-pounder into position, as artillery crews deploy both the six-pounder and a mountain howitzer along the ridge. Heavy artillery fire and canister shot tearing through the timber halt the Dakota advance. Marshall’s men crawl forward through the grass under fire, fix bayonets, and execute a sweep that dislodges the warriors from the ravine. Tragedy strikes both sides in the final moments. Chief Mankato is killed instantly by a spent cannonball rolling across the ground that he refused to dodge. Wahpeton peace advocate Iron Walker, attempting to cross the field under a white flag, has his leg severed by a cannonball and dies of his wounds the next morning. By nine in the morning, the prairie grows quiet. Outgunned and badly outnumbered, Little Crow’s forces break off and retreat west. Seven Union soldiers lie dead or dying, while Sibley’s men bury fourteen fallen Dakota warriors where they dropped in the tall grass. ACT IV: The Shattered Lodge: Defeat and Surrender at Camp Release Little Crow returns to his village in total defeat. According to accounts from captives, he stands outside his lodge and delivers a bitter address. 700 picked warriors were whipped by the whites. The war lodge collapses into internal accusations of betrayal and treason. Convinced that further fighting is hopeless, Little Crow packs his camp. He flees westward onto the northern plains with 200 followers. Meanwhile, Sibley refuses to launch an immediate pursuit. He chooses instead to safeguard the lives of the hostages. On September 26, Sibley’s army reaches the site that would become known as Camp Release. Leaders of the Dakota Peace Party step forward. They deliver 269 captives, mostly women and children, into the care of the Union soldiers. Retribution follows with terrifying speed. Sibley establishes a five-member military tribunal. In less than six weeks, the commission tries 392 Dakota men, handing down 303 death sentences. President Abraham Lincoln intervenes and reviews the trial records. He commutes the vast majority of sentences, but he approves the execution of 38 men. On December 26, 1862, in Mankato, those 38 men are hanged on a single scaffold, the largest mass execution in American history. Beginning in November 1862, more than 1,600 Dakota non-combatants are forced into an internment camp at Fort Snelling. In February 1863, Congress abrogates all Dakota treaties, signaling the complete exile of the Dakota from their ancestral homeland. CONCLUSION: The Markers Along Lone Tree Creek: The Legacy of Wood Lake Along County Road 18 in Yellow Medicine County, the prairie wind blows across a landscape transformed. Lone Tree Lake has long since dried up, leaving only a gentle hollow in the earth. Beside the road stands a granite obelisk, erected in 1910 to mark Sibley’s fortified campsite, where archaeological work has uncovered part of a thirty-meter defensive rifle pit. Just a half-mile down the trail, along Wood Lake Creek, lies the true battlefield where the fighting raged. There, excavations have identified the old agency road and recovered spent ammunition from the tall grass. Today, visitors walk mowed trails where an accidental stumble over foraging wagons brought a tragic six-week war to its close. High in the branches of nearby oak trees, colorful prayer streamers tied by Dakota descendants flutter in the breeze. They keep quiet vigil over this ground, an enduring reminder that from our deepest historical wounds, memory and reconciliation can slowly take root.
