- 0:09Speaker 1: This is called manager meeting, but it might be a
- 0:12Speaker 1: very negative meeting. If you read Bob Nightingale's USA Today
- 0:15Speaker 1: column on some fascinating developments in the manager keep or
- 0:20Speaker 1: Not Keep job twenty six to twenty seven conversation. So
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'll go through a few of the notes that he
- 0:26Speaker 1: put in there, and then we can slice and dice.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Here.
- 0:28Speaker 1: There's the article in the Sunday Notebook. So included in
- 0:31Speaker 1: there is Bob mentioning how Tory Lavello Diamondbacks managers in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the final year of his contract and said that they
- 0:37Speaker 1: likely need to make the playoffs for him to keep
- 0:39Speaker 1: his job. He talks about Alex Cora potentially taking over
- 0:42Speaker 1: for the Phillies next year if Don Mattingley doesn't lead
- 0:44Speaker 1: the team to a World Series either appearance or title.
- 0:49Speaker 1: He says Dan Wilson and Joe Aspata, so Mariners and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Astros managers could be let go of their clubs don't
- 0:56Speaker 1: make the playoffs. Those are just some of many notes
- 0:59Speaker 1: in here. We also learned on our own. Buster Posey
- 1:01Speaker 1: said the other day that Tony Baytello is coming back
- 1:04Speaker 1: next season. I mean if I Tello asked to decide
- 1:07Speaker 1: that too, if he doesn't want to go back to
- 1:08Speaker 1: the college game. I know we've had that combos, so
- 1:10Speaker 1: a lot to dissect. To your Krafts, Where would you
- 1:12Speaker 1: like to start?
- 1:14Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like there's so many different pieces
- 1:17Speaker 3: to this Chriks Dammon fine, completely good. He's back. Don Mattingly.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I don't know that he wants to be back. I
- 1:24Speaker 3: don't know that his desire is to continue to manage.
- 1:29Speaker 3: But I think what he's done, you can't ask for
- 1:33Speaker 3: anything else. If Dombrowski wants to go with Korra, he
- 1:37Speaker 3: doesn't have a choice. I don't even think if they
- 1:39Speaker 3: make it to the NLCS and lose, if he wants
- 1:43Speaker 3: Kora and he wants Core, because he's going to be
- 1:46Speaker 3: most likely Dombrowski's going to be extended for the twenty
- 1:51Speaker 3: seven plus season. Like, I don't think you have really
- 1:56Speaker 3: much in there. To me, the guy that you cannot
- 1:59Speaker 3: fire is Tory Leavello what he has done in Arizona.
- 2:03Speaker 3: If the owner says, hey, you know what I bought
- 2:05Speaker 3: these pitchers. I bought you know, Jordan Montgomery, I bought
- 2:08Speaker 3: ed you know, Eduardo Rodriguez, I bought Corbin Burns, Like
- 2:12Speaker 3: all these guys, what hasn't worked out like I To me,
- 2:17Speaker 3: I think Tory Leavello has done an amazing job there.
- 2:20Speaker 3: To me, the guy is Dan Wilson. They don't win
- 2:24Speaker 3: with this team. I don't see how Dan Wilson keeps
- 2:26Speaker 3: his job. And maybe it's nothing against him. I get it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: He can't hit for this team, but he's been given
- 2:34Speaker 3: all the pieces. He's been given a healthy rotation. He's
- 2:37Speaker 3: been given some extra dudes in the in the lineup
- 2:41Speaker 3: that just didn't do well, from Refsnyder to Nailer this
- 2:45Speaker 3: year to obviously cal Raley. You know, maybe Dan Wilson
- 2:49Speaker 3: ran him out there too much last year, but it's
- 2:51Speaker 3: his MVP year. So to me, I just think Dan's
- 2:54Speaker 3: probably the guy on this list that I'd be like, Okay,
- 2:56Speaker 3: I see it.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I would second that. Actually, you know, even Joe Aspata,
- 3:03Speaker 4: I feel like even when things have gone the worst,
- 3:06Speaker 4: he seems to be the most steady Eddie. The guys
- 3:08Speaker 4: love playing under him, and I feel like he figures
- 3:11Speaker 4: out how to get this team with all the injuries
- 3:13Speaker 4: that they've had this year in the past couple of years,
- 3:16Speaker 4: to get this team in a place where they're competitive,
- 3:19Speaker 4: and Dan Wilson I would agree. I mean there's been
- 3:23Speaker 4: you know, Kyle Riley, he's not as good as he
- 3:26Speaker 4: was last year, but he's definitely not as bad as
- 3:29Speaker 4: he is this year, So there's some underperformance there. And
- 3:33Speaker 4: you know, Julio the first half wasn't that great and
- 3:35Speaker 4: you know he's been better as of late, but still
- 3:38Speaker 4: not at to the level. So I think, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 4: it's it's tough because they've had some really have a
- 3:43Speaker 4: really good pitching staff, just a lineup. They haven't figured
- 3:46Speaker 4: out how to get consistency out of that lineup, and
- 3:49Speaker 4: that's been something that's been a constant problem. So whether
- 3:53Speaker 4: that's Dan Wilson or whatever, I can you can understand
- 3:56Speaker 4: why someone like that would be fired to try to
- 3:58Speaker 4: fight someone else. As far as down mannically, it's it
- 4:01Speaker 4: seemed like at the beginning of it, there's a couple
- 4:03Speaker 4: of interviews that I listened to that he was he
- 4:05Speaker 4: agreed to step in, but understood that this is going
- 4:07Speaker 4: to be for this year only. And I honestly feel like.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Alex Cora is a really good.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Fit to this type of organization, especially with the veterans there.
- 4:17Speaker 4: I feel like he knows how to win a certain
- 4:20Speaker 4: way and and with Boston, they were trying to do
- 4:23Speaker 4: different things that they felt like they could win, and
- 4:26Speaker 4: so it was it was a battle of ways of
- 4:30Speaker 4: of who which which version is the better way to go,
- 4:33Speaker 4: And obviously the organization is going to go with their
- 4:35Speaker 4: their side. But Alex Cora knows how to win ball games, So, uh,
- 4:39Speaker 4: you can understand how that can just work out perfectly
- 4:42Speaker 4: with Mattingly not wanting to be a long term solution
- 4:46Speaker 4: for the Phillies.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 4:48Speaker 2: But Tory Lavello, that guy A lot.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Of a lot of his players loved playing for him.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:53Speaker 4: You feel like he's he's a loved in that clubhouse
- 4:57Speaker 4: and he's a great manager. I'm able to have conversations
- 4:59Speaker 4: with him, and he's been he's been awesome. So I
- 5:02Speaker 4: agree with you Cratzy that Dan Wilson would be the
- 5:05Speaker 4: one for me that would be the most likely to
- 5:08Speaker 4: be let go. Antony Vitello. They mentioned Buster Posey saying
- 5:14Speaker 4: he's going to be back. I definitely want to see
- 5:16Speaker 4: what he can do with his second year, because the
- 5:19Speaker 4: first year is kind of figuring out the bearings, and
- 5:21Speaker 4: you can see early on in the season that a
- 5:23Speaker 4: lot of guys are saying that this is it kind
- 5:26Speaker 4: of feels like a college type thing with the way
- 5:28Speaker 4: he talks to certain guys. But he's a smart man
- 5:31Speaker 4: and he knows how to communicate now more with major
- 5:33Speaker 4: league guys, and so I like to see him go
- 5:36Speaker 4: have a fresh start out of it with some more
- 5:40Speaker 4: experience that he's had gained this year, and see what
- 5:42Speaker 4: he can do with it.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Seekeek is the official ticket marketplace for Major League Baseball,
- 5:50Speaker 5: and anytime you want to go to a game, you.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Should go to Seakeek.
- 5:53Speaker 5: I used to call the director of team travel, I
- 5:55Speaker 5: used to call the traveling secretary whatever they want to
- 5:57Speaker 5: be called KP to try to get a seat. But
- 5:59Speaker 5: on seek, I can pick my own seat and I
- 6:02Speaker 5: can pick where I want to sit instead of being
- 6:04Speaker 5: told where to sit.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a great option. And summer is coming to
- 6:09Speaker 6: an end here soon. I'm going out and finding all
- 6:13Speaker 6: the day games possible, all the warm weather cities so
- 6:17Speaker 6: I could stay in this tank top I can watch
- 6:19Speaker 6: very competitive baseball as the calendar turns in two fall.
- 6:23Speaker 6: I want to make sure that I get the most
- 6:26Speaker 6: out of this tank top and warm weather and sea
- 6:29Speaker 6: Geek is where I would go and get my seats.
- 6:31Speaker 5: You can use code Territory ten for ten percent off
- 6:33Speaker 5: your next set of MLB tickets at SEK. That's ten
- 6:36Speaker 5: percent off MLB tickets with promo code Territory ten. Make
- 6:40Speaker 5: sure you click the link in the description to download
- 6:42Speaker 5: the app and have the code automatically added to your
- 6:44Speaker 5: account so you can use it later.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Name of the game for a manager, no matter what
- 6:49Speaker 3: situation you're in, Vytello with one of the worst records
- 6:53Speaker 3: in the game, or Dave Roberts with one of the
- 6:56Speaker 3: best teams, or Pat Murphy, how do you get the
- 7:00Speaker 3: most out of your lineup, your rotation, your bullpen to
- 7:05Speaker 3: be able to get the most out of each of
- 7:07Speaker 3: those guys. It doesn't always equal wins, but you get
- 7:10Speaker 3: the most out of them. How does Tony Vaitello get
- 7:13Speaker 3: Raffi Devers to get back to his normal career numbers
- 7:16Speaker 3: with a slow start. How does Dave Roberts figure out
- 7:20Speaker 3: how to keep Shoho Tani healthy? All that stuff, you
- 7:23Speaker 3: get the most out of your team. That's what creates
- 7:25Speaker 3: a good manager or a bad manager that should be fired.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Any other managers even not listed in this article, that
- 7:38Speaker 1: you think we should keep an eye on for the
- 7:40Speaker 1: next month and change here.
- 7:44Speaker 3: As far as should be fired or depends on how
- 7:48Speaker 3: the team does.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Yeah, hot seat, that's really what this article is about.
- 7:54Speaker 4: None really stick out other than these guys. What about Ucratzy?
- 7:59Speaker 4: Does anybody any other manager stick out to you?
- 8:03Speaker 3: I think I think I think, uh, Terry Francona like
- 8:09Speaker 3: is is his veteran leadership in that Cincinnati because it
- 8:14Speaker 3: it was kind of he was given this team and
- 8:17Speaker 3: they were like, hey, you know what, you got to
- 8:18Speaker 3: do your magic. Now. They did make the playoffs last year,
- 8:22Speaker 3: and you know a lot of credit can give be
- 8:24Speaker 3: given to Tito. But you know, is that is that
- 8:27Speaker 3: young mix and that veteran manager? Is that's still the mix?
- 8:32Speaker 3: I mean obviously, you know, I go down the list here,
- 8:36Speaker 3: Craig Counsel's going nowhere, Walt White going nowhere. You know, Voter,
- 8:42Speaker 3: I'm just going up up through. You know, Hinch has
- 8:45Speaker 3: been in Detroit for a long time, but there's very
- 8:48Speaker 3: few managers more respect. Oh well, that's an easy way.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Kurt made his own bed. Yeah, that's that's a good one. Hey, Jay,
- 8:59Speaker 3: I like that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Yeah, right, Suzuki's contract is expiring and I don't think
- 9:05Speaker 1: he'll be back, just because that's what they like to
- 9:07Speaker 1: play over.
- 9:08Speaker 7: There in Anaheim. Just new guy every year.
- 9:11Speaker 1: The Mets with Andy Green, I don't think he's going
- 9:13Speaker 1: to manage them after this year. I know they're playing
- 9:15Speaker 1: some better ball over the last few weeks, But Bob
- 9:18Speaker 1: Ninkal's actually actually I think, been the one who has
- 9:21Speaker 1: been banging on the drum that he thinks Carlos Beltron
- 9:23Speaker 1: is a lock for the next manager of the Mets.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So there's one there. Chad Tracy should get his interim
- 9:28Speaker 1: tech removed yesterday for Boston. With the run that they
- 9:32Speaker 1: just had, they're gonna most likely make the playoffs. So
- 9:35Speaker 1: he's done a great job. I think that's fair right.
- 9:37Speaker 1: He should be the manager next year for the team,
- 9:39Speaker 1: no doubt.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I think so.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I think the players resonate with him. I think he's
- 9:44Speaker 4: done a great job with that, So yeah, it's going
- 9:47Speaker 4: to be something, you know, if you can get the
- 9:50Speaker 4: most out of your players like that, and then you
- 9:52Speaker 4: add some more pitching involved in that to round out
- 9:55Speaker 4: that team. I think that's something that's his favor for sure.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I talked to some people in Boston, actually ran into
- 10:04Speaker 3: him when I was up and up in New England
- 10:07Speaker 3: here and I think Chad Tracy while you watch him
- 10:12Speaker 3: and you're like, oh, he's very like, seems very reserved
- 10:14Speaker 3: all this stuff. He's done a great job in the clubhouse,
- 10:19Speaker 3: but the connection that he has with how the organization
- 10:23Speaker 3: wants to run things. AJ kind of hit on a
- 10:25Speaker 3: little bit when he was talking about Kora, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 3: maybe not meshing too well with the organization. Chad Tracy
- 10:33Speaker 3: Mesh as well. He was the triple A manager. There's
- 10:38Speaker 3: rhetoric that's being brought down from the front office that
- 10:42Speaker 3: he's able to filter out to the players to get
- 10:45Speaker 3: the most out of him. He's able to filter things through,
- 10:48Speaker 3: like look what Durbin's done, Cale Durbin's done since he's
- 10:52Speaker 3: taken over. Like, there's adjustments that players have to make,
- 10:55Speaker 3: and sometimes it's just how the information is being brought
- 10:59Speaker 3: to you and then you give it to that player
- 11:02Speaker 3: in a different way. And Chad's done an incredible job
- 11:05Speaker 3: of that. And you know, that's why I think it's
- 11:07Speaker 3: a it's a good fit for him for for the
- 11:10Speaker 3: organization and not just the players.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and also some of those a lot of those
- 11:14Speaker 4: guys he managed in the minor leagues as well, so
- 11:17Speaker 4: they understand how he goes about his business. So I think, yeah, overall,
- 11:21Speaker 4: I think that's that's gonna be a guy that's going
- 11:23Speaker 4: to stay there. And you look at how they're playing
- 11:26Speaker 4: this this uh second half or the second win. Basically
- 11:29Speaker 4: they went on that little run. It shows you the
- 11:33Speaker 4: potential of it. Now they're not always going to go
- 11:34Speaker 4: on those runs, but it lets you see the potential
- 11:37Speaker 4: which you weren't seeing earlier in the year because the
- 11:39Speaker 4: conflict of interest in how you they analyze the game
- 11:43Speaker 4: between manager and front office. So now you've got everyone
- 11:46Speaker 4: pulling in the same direction. So everything that is being
- 11:48Speaker 4: said is everyone's pulling the same rope, and that is huge,
- 11:51Speaker 4: especially in Boston when you get a lot of those
- 11:54Speaker 4: talented guys pulling the same way. That's whenever the team
- 11:57Speaker 4: starts playing as a team and you start seeing them
- 11:59Speaker 4: run a rattle off all these wins.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So when you sum this all up, I mean, I
- 12:05Speaker 1: think about a third of the league changed in terms
- 12:07Speaker 1: of manager from last year. From about a year ago
- 12:11Speaker 1: to then the beginning of the season, right Kratz number,
- 12:14Speaker 1: the number got close to about a third of the league.
- 12:17Speaker 7: We might get close to that number. Again, that's crazy.
- 12:21Speaker 3: That's crazy. But I don't even know what a normal,
- 12:25Speaker 3: what the normal is, like, what's the average managerial change?
- 12:28Speaker 3: But it has to be it has to be higher
- 12:31Speaker 3: now because front offices don't view it the same way.
- 12:34Speaker 3: They don't view the continuity, They don't view the manager
- 12:39Speaker 3: role as the same. And owners definitely don't view it
- 12:43Speaker 3: the same because they don't pay the guys as much.
- 12:45Speaker 3: They don't they don't keep the veteran guy around. So yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 3: I mean I would say that number has to go up.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Maybe somebody one of these good writers that we have
- 12:55Speaker 3: one would write an article about that.
- 12:57Speaker 7: Yeah, we might get that at some point.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And I would bet that the average number has gone
- 13:01Speaker 1: up over the last since COVID basically, right, just using
- 13:05Speaker 1: that time period in the last half decade or so
- 13:07Speaker 1: versus prior.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Since the playoff. Since the more teams make it into
- 13:12Speaker 3: the playoffs, I think that's the biggest.
- 13:13Speaker 7: Thing that puts more heat on, right.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Uh No, I think I think teams are like, ah,
- 13:19Speaker 3: there's a lot more spots, so we can get you know,
- 13:22Speaker 3: we can get one of those playoff spots, which does
- 13:24Speaker 3: put more heat on, but it also is like whatever,
- 13:27Speaker 3: We'll just run an algorithm and you know, we got
- 13:29Speaker 3: a chance to make the playoffs.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Good talk and if you want to hear Tony Bytello
- 13:36Speaker 1: talk on the FT network. Splash Hit Territory posted their
- 13:40Speaker 1: show on Friday and it includes by Tello chatting with
- 13:44Speaker 1: our Splash Hit Territory extraordinaries, So go check that out.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He is an entertaining conversation always his part about the
- 13:51Speaker 1: off days and his evolution of how to utilize them.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I thought was really cool to get some insights, so
- 13:56Speaker 1: check it out. Susan Sless was on that episode along
- 13:59Speaker 1: with Jeremy Atha, one of the new hosts. Hey Quick
- 14:02Speaker 1: two minutes here on Paul Skeens and the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 14:05Speaker 1: who have fallen out a little bit. Skeens is getting
- 14:08Speaker 1: pushed back a few days.
- 14:09Speaker 8: AJ.
- 14:09Speaker 1: What have you seen from him this year? We've been
- 14:11Speaker 1: covering what's going on here Pittsburgh nine and sixteen in
- 14:13Speaker 1: his starts, not giving them length v low and just
- 14:16Speaker 1: the effectiveness on all his pitches are down. Ben Charrington,
- 14:19Speaker 1: who runs the team, talked about how the strikeout and
- 14:21Speaker 1: walk rates are still in a similar spot and then
- 14:23Speaker 1: he's just going through some wear and tear, not an injury.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:27Speaker 4: So I got to see him pitch against the Marlins
- 14:30Speaker 4: his last start, and his stuff was slightly diminished. For sure.
- 14:34Speaker 4: It looked like he was laboring through that full outing.
- 14:38Speaker 4: You can always tell by the body language. He tries
- 14:41Speaker 4: to exhibit the same things after every pitch. But his
- 14:43Speaker 4: mouth was open. He was breathing op like is breathing heavily,
- 14:48Speaker 4: And so they took him out early in that start.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Donnie Kelly said, yeah, we took him out just, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 4: to give him a breather, and then sure enough they
- 14:56Speaker 4: kind of pushed back his start. But a lot of times,
- 14:59Speaker 4: this is his third full year, I believe pitching. And
- 15:02Speaker 4: so my first two years I never got dead arm.
- 15:05Speaker 4: In that third year and around August, I got dead arm.
- 15:07Speaker 4: It wasn't my arm wasn't hurting or anything like in
- 15:10Speaker 4: spring training when I got dead arm, I had a
- 15:12Speaker 4: pain on my bicep area. But when I got to August,
- 15:16Speaker 4: it was just nothing was coming out. There was no pain,
- 15:18Speaker 4: there was no tiredness. It's just when I throw the
- 15:21Speaker 4: ball it felt like it was ten pounds heavier. So
- 15:23Speaker 4: schemes could be going through something like this, and especially
- 15:27Speaker 4: when you expect him to be he said, expectations really high.
- 15:31Speaker 4: If he doesn't quite meet those, then it's something that
- 15:34Speaker 4: can be exacerbated and people say, no, no, he's injured.
- 15:38Speaker 4: So right now I think he's just going through one
- 15:40Speaker 4: of those times where.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It's the dog days of August.
- 15:42Speaker 4: So they're giving him a little bit of a break
- 15:44Speaker 4: to kind of get him back on because they haven't
- 15:46Speaker 4: been doing well.

- 17:07Speaker 8: read from Cratzy, So you know, I don't think my
- 17:10Speaker 8: spirits could be higher right now.
- 17:13Speaker 1: We try and always make sure you get like your
- 17:14Speaker 1: best version of one of our ads when you're bringing
- 17:17Speaker 1: on like it's like the what do they call it,
- 17:19Speaker 1: the digmy tape, the hype video right before you're heading
- 17:22Speaker 1: out there.
- 17:23Speaker 9: It's a good taste session.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You know.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yes, I'm with you, all right, So let's we usually
- 17:28Speaker 1: get into the team first. Can we get into you
- 17:30Speaker 1: for a moment here for the last couple of weeks,
- 17:32Speaker 1: what's feeling good?
- 17:34Speaker 8: Make some good adjustments, kind of let the slot head
- 17:38Speaker 8: prepped down a little bit, and you know, I described
- 17:42Speaker 8: it as it's not necessarily turns it into a dead
- 17:45Speaker 8: zone heater, But when I with how the fastball moves,
- 17:50Speaker 8: if I'm not in like the high fifties, right at
- 17:53Speaker 8: sixty degrees on the arm slot just become significantly more hittable.
- 17:58Speaker 8: So it felt like I made the uh you know
- 18:00Speaker 8: if hopefully you know, obviously I had to stay on
- 18:02Speaker 8: top of it, but started to trend back up with
- 18:05Speaker 8: the slot and then that you know, when your back
- 18:08Speaker 8: sound and the four teams on the line or has
- 18:11Speaker 8: you know, I typically tend to find a little more success.
- 18:16Speaker 4: How do you go about implementing that? And how do
- 18:19Speaker 4: you know when you're exactly at fifty degrees and all
- 18:23Speaker 4: those things? So how do you work on that? Is
- 18:26Speaker 4: it during catchplay or what is it?
- 18:28Speaker 2: What is your thought.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Process or what are your mechanics telling you to do there?
- 18:34Speaker 8: Yeah, the easiest for me is I just try and
- 18:37Speaker 8: feel like the ball gets higher as I you know,
- 18:39Speaker 8: kind of go through the takeaway as I'm going down
- 18:41Speaker 8: the mound, and that's just a catch play. Then you
- 18:44Speaker 8: want to just feel like just the ball is just
- 18:47Speaker 8: getting one tick higher as I have my little short
- 18:49Speaker 8: arm swing and just feel like it's has that one
- 18:52Speaker 8: little extra beat to climb before you start going forward,
- 18:56Speaker 8: and that's, you know, something you do in catchplay, something
- 18:58Speaker 8: you do in the pregame touch and feel, and then
- 19:01Speaker 8: you know, you're getting your post game reports and I'm
- 19:03Speaker 8: able to see, you know, if it's trending in.
- 19:06Speaker 9: That direction or not.
- 19:07Speaker 8: And you know, we've climbed a couple of degrees since
- 19:09Speaker 8: we've we've tried to do it, so it seems like
- 19:12Speaker 8: the cues are working.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Do you know it before you get your post game information,
- 19:17Speaker 3: you get the pack it that tells you your degrees
- 19:19Speaker 3: or where they're at, or do you know it when
- 19:22Speaker 3: it's happening and you're like, I can't do anything because
- 19:24Speaker 3: I'm hanging right now.
- 19:27Speaker 8: You know, my best my best reference point is to
- 19:30Speaker 8: do everybody's favorite quick check to the metrics on the scoreboard,
- 19:35Speaker 8: and I know, you know, just with how with how
- 19:38Speaker 8: the you know, you kind of reverse engineer it from
- 19:40Speaker 8: you can see the ballfly and be like, okay, well
- 19:42Speaker 8: that was you know, what are you looking for for me?
- 19:44Speaker 8: If it's if it has any sort of run that's
- 19:47Speaker 8: three or less, you know, from three on the on
- 19:50Speaker 8: the run side to anything that's true cut typically tells
- 19:54Speaker 8: me that I'm in the right spot. So yeah, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 8: if I I distinctly remember giving up and absolutely just
- 20:01Speaker 8: I mean it might have gone through the bleachers in
- 20:05Speaker 8: the Loan Dome had the bleacher's not been there. And
- 20:08Speaker 8: I looked up and I had like five or six
- 20:10Speaker 8: run on it. I was like, yeah, we gotta make
- 20:11Speaker 8: we got to start making some adjustments here.
- 20:15Speaker 4: How much of that, you know, of all of those
- 20:18Speaker 4: different metrics and things, how much did that play on
- 20:21Speaker 4: your confidence? Because as a closer, you know, you got
- 20:24Speaker 4: to go in there, whether your stuff is running a
- 20:25Speaker 4: lot or whether it's your fastball that you want. So
- 20:28Speaker 4: how do you work on Let's say you look back
- 20:30Speaker 4: and you see a lot of run, how do you
- 20:32Speaker 4: not make it so mechanical so that it doesn't mess
- 20:34Speaker 4: up mess up your flow or your confidence when you're
- 20:36Speaker 4: trying to close out a ball game.
- 20:38Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean I think it's you know, I'm just
- 20:41Speaker 8: trying to stay within my mental queues, regardless of kind
- 20:44Speaker 8: of what's going on with you know, how the ball
- 20:47Speaker 8: is coming out of the hand, and I know that,
- 20:49Speaker 8: you know, if there is one that I'm I look up,
- 20:52Speaker 8: I see and we're not you know, we're not where
- 20:54Speaker 8: we're supposed to be.
- 20:56Speaker 9: I mean, typically it's as easy as just feeling.
- 20:58Speaker 8: Like I'm a little bit more on the outside of
- 20:59Speaker 8: the ball with ass ball, just I'm naturally kind of
- 21:04Speaker 8: on the side of it to begin with. And whenever
- 21:05Speaker 8: I can just feel like a little bit extra, I
- 21:07Speaker 8: know it's gonna end up kind of back where we're
- 21:10Speaker 8: where we're looking for.
- 21:12Speaker 3: How fresh are you right now? We were just talking
- 21:14Speaker 3: before you came on. You probably heard us. We were
- 21:16Speaker 3: talking about Paul Skins and AJ was talking about dead arm.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Can you give us a run through through the season
- 21:24Speaker 3: of how fresh a pitcher can be or is or
- 21:27Speaker 3: do you ever go out there like in Philly. You're
- 21:30Speaker 3: gonna be in Philly, I'm gonna be watching you. I'm
- 21:31Speaker 3: gonna be in the four hundred level yelling at you.
- 21:34Speaker 3: You won't be able to hear anything, and I won't
- 21:35Speaker 3: be able to see if it's you. But like, is
- 21:38Speaker 3: there an adrenaline spike sometimes that you're like, man, I
- 21:41Speaker 3: was feeling kind of pet now I'm feeling kind of nice.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 8: I think you know, coming out of the bullpen, you're
- 21:52Speaker 8: it's pretty hard to be immune from any sort of adrenaline,
- 21:56Speaker 8: and it's also pretty hard to be immune of any
- 21:57Speaker 8: sort of wear and tear, so even each other out
- 22:01Speaker 8: and you know, whether it's getting your your extra recovery,
- 22:05Speaker 8: pregame or whatever it is.
- 22:08Speaker 9: I mean, you're never really fresh, but you're always good
- 22:10Speaker 9: to go.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Yep, yeah, No, that's uh. It's one of those things
- 22:15Speaker 4: that you can't escape it. You just got to figure
- 22:17Speaker 4: out how to be the best version of yourself of
- 22:19Speaker 4: that game. But recently there's been some controversy with some
- 22:22Speaker 4: guys maybe hitting well, hitting guys after giving up grand
- 22:26Speaker 4: slams or homers. I've done it myself. It wasn't on purpose.
- 22:31Speaker 4: I just let it go and where it went it went.
- 22:34Speaker 4: But what do you think the like, do you think
- 22:37Speaker 4: there should be a penalty or what what do you
- 22:39Speaker 4: think should should be implemented so that guys don't get hurt?
- 22:46Speaker 9: So I just play hypothetical rules committee. Look, I don't.
- 22:52Speaker 8: I think that there's a right way to hit people,
- 22:56Speaker 8: you know, I don't think that that's part of the game.
- 22:58Speaker 8: And obviously that's you can flip that however, it needs
- 23:02Speaker 8: to be clipped for maximum engagement. But there's a difference
- 23:06Speaker 8: between sticking up for your guys and you know, hitting
- 23:10Speaker 8: somebody right, and that old behind versus the emotional. I'm
- 23:14Speaker 8: gonna throw at somebody because I'm not not succeeding. You know,
- 23:18Speaker 8: I've been on teams where both have happened, and I think,
- 23:23Speaker 8: you know, there's there's not a place in the game
- 23:25Speaker 8: for the emotional. I don't like what I'm doing out there,
- 23:29Speaker 8: so I'm gonna plump somebody. I don't think that that
- 23:31Speaker 8: it should be a part of the game.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Now.
- 23:34Speaker 8: If your guys are getting buzzed and you got people
- 23:36Speaker 8: getting hit up top, and you know you got a
- 23:39Speaker 8: guy that is out there that needs to stick up
- 23:42Speaker 8: for your guys, I think that's part of the kind
- 23:45Speaker 8: of the old school baseball that shouldn't be eradicated from
- 23:48Speaker 8: the game.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Who handles it for you guys? Like, does the bullpen
- 23:52Speaker 3: start to like get a little old man? I can't
- 23:55Speaker 3: believe they hit the hitstours three times. I can't believe
- 23:57Speaker 3: they hit X, you know twice this game. Do you
- 24:00Speaker 3: guys start seeing that because if they call I know,
- 24:03Speaker 3: I called down to the bullpen one time to tell
- 24:05Speaker 3: the next guy in to hit somebody, and I found
- 24:07Speaker 3: out that they're recording all the calls down, so I
- 24:10Speaker 3: know that's not how it works.
- 24:14Speaker 8: Yeah, the last couple of situations that I've seen that
- 24:19Speaker 8: was early in the game, and the Starter handled it.
- 24:23Speaker 8: And you know, I think it's very game situation dependent, right,
- 24:26Speaker 8: Like you can you can tell when when somebody gets
- 24:32Speaker 8: a little emotional and hit somebody, and you know, depending
- 24:35Speaker 8: on game situation.
- 24:37Speaker 9: I mean, we're look our group is, So.
- 24:43Speaker 8: I'm gonna say slap happy and use that as the
- 24:46Speaker 8: is the term for how we are down there, because
- 24:49Speaker 8: we were about as loose as it gets. I don't
- 24:51Speaker 8: I don't think that we're super We're not super locked
- 24:54Speaker 8: in until that phone range and you know that it's
- 24:56Speaker 8: your time to go in. But yeah, I mean the
- 24:59Speaker 8: stuff like that Cratzy's you know, it gets handled in
- 25:02Speaker 8: the appropriate way, whether it's Starter or whether it's Reliever. Unfortunately,
- 25:05Speaker 8: in your case, MLB and Mordan's Sword got you on.
- 25:10Speaker 8: They got you on on with the receipts, so you
- 25:12Speaker 8: might have been in a little trouble for that one.
- 25:19Speaker 7: We have pop in colors for mack Weldon.

- 26:14Speaker 1: ou l man.
- 26:16Speaker 4: So part of being in the bullpen, you're a veteran guy.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Is part of is being a good being a veteran
- 26:23Speaker 4: is helping out the younger guys. One of the guys
- 26:25Speaker 4: that had a really a glow up is Michael Peterson.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Have you had any convos with him? What have you
- 26:30Speaker 4: seen out of him? Because he has taken his game
- 26:33Speaker 4: to a whole nother level and it's been really.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Cool to watch.
- 26:39Speaker 8: Yeah, watching big Mitrow has been. I mean it's been
- 26:41Speaker 8: a lot of fun. I mean you can just for
- 26:46Speaker 8: me just the confidence growth from you know, early on
- 26:51Speaker 8: till now. I mean, look when you when you can
- 26:55Speaker 8: rip a ninety one mount our slider on the zero
- 26:58Speaker 8: line and carry it twenty plus, That in itself breeds
- 27:02Speaker 8: a lot of confidence. And then you start seeing success,
- 27:06Speaker 8: you know, and you start seeing his big toe walk
- 27:08Speaker 8: off the field. I mean, it's been it's been a
- 27:10Speaker 8: lot of fun to watch. And anytime, you know, you
- 27:13Speaker 8: get to see him go into a ballgame, you feel
- 27:15Speaker 8: as though things are going to work out in your favor.
- 27:18Speaker 3: All right. Did you see the Joshua Bias three homers
- 27:21Speaker 3: in his first three at bats coming to the big leagues?
- 27:24Speaker 2: Oh?
- 27:24Speaker 9: I sure did.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Okay, when you face a rookie coming up, how much
- 27:29Speaker 3: information scattering report do you guys get or actually want?
- 27:34Speaker 3: Because you've only been talking. Well when I'm good, I
- 27:37Speaker 3: got a little cut mostly no run, And I'm just
- 27:40Speaker 3: gonna be me. How much scattering report do you have
- 27:43Speaker 3: when a guy comes up like that?
- 27:47Speaker 9: I mean you don't see a ton of of it.
- 27:50Speaker 9: I mean you'll run off the triple A numbers.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:52Speaker 8: Everything is you have access to way more information than
- 27:57Speaker 8: you ever did. I mean even ten years ago, I
- 27:59Speaker 8: would say, so, I mean you're gonna have You're gonna
- 28:02Speaker 8: have a general, you know, pitch type strength that you
- 28:05Speaker 8: might see from a guy. But I mean, oh, on all,
- 28:08Speaker 8: I think I would say the league as a whole,
- 28:11Speaker 8: pitching wise, is you're gonna throw to your strengths. I
- 28:14Speaker 8: mean unless you have such an absolute drastic strength or
- 28:20Speaker 8: weakness from a hitter to a certain pitch. So yeah,
- 28:23Speaker 8: I mean I think you get your stuff. But also
- 28:27Speaker 8: you know you're in a trust who you are, and
- 28:29Speaker 8: it's finding that ideal blend, and sometimes it's leaning more
- 28:33Speaker 8: towards what you do well, and sometimes it's it's.
- 28:35Speaker 9: Going to you know, what you see people struggle with.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I can speak to that part. I mean a
- 28:40Speaker 4: lot of times or sometimes I didn't even know who's
- 28:42Speaker 4: in the box. I just saw a righty or lefty.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I'm throwing what I feel feels good. But when earlier
- 28:47Speaker 4: when you said we're a slap happy team, I thought
- 28:49Speaker 4: you were referring to Tyler Phillips, who is now a starter.
- 28:53Speaker 4: What is it, you know? For those who haven't seen it,
- 28:56Speaker 4: Tyler Phillips slaps used to slap his face when he
- 28:58Speaker 4: came out of the bullpen, so that's what he was
- 29:00Speaker 4: referring to. But what's it been like without Tyler Phillips
- 29:03Speaker 4: in the bullpen?
- 29:08Speaker 8: You know, we've got uh Zuber and King affectionately refer
- 29:14Speaker 8: to the group is the he Haw Gang.
- 29:17Speaker 9: U Zuber.
- 29:18Speaker 8: As we know, he's from Arkansas, so it's got a
- 29:20Speaker 8: little country to him. He always likes to say that
- 29:23Speaker 8: people are playing he Haw and we've got I'd say
- 29:29Speaker 8: we're probably six out of eight down there that are
- 29:31Speaker 8: card carrying members of the he Haw Gang.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I love it.
- 29:36Speaker 4: I love it, all right. So we're gonna do a
- 29:38Speaker 4: rapid fire type question. It's gonna be me and you, Okay,
- 29:41Speaker 4: two closers. I'm a former closer, you're you're a closer still,
- 29:45Speaker 4: all right, So we're gonna do it really quickly. Ready,
- 29:47Speaker 4: all right, favorite album of all time?
- 29:52Speaker 9: I Empire, Angles and Airwaves.
- 29:54Speaker 4: Okay, okay, what about your favorite movie?
- 30:04Speaker 8: I mean, I go in phases, i'd probably say right
- 30:07Speaker 8: now Tenant Chris Nolan.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Oh, that one's I gotta see Trip.
- 30:13Speaker 9: You either love it or you hate it. You either
- 30:15Speaker 9: love it or you hate it. There's no in between.
- 30:16Speaker 2: No, I love it.
- 30:17Speaker 4: I just have to watch it again to understand it.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Mind blowing. I'm gonna ask you one more than I'm
- 30:23Speaker 4: gonna have. Then Krats is gonna ask you one. Uh,
- 30:25Speaker 4: let's see. What about Yeah, what is your pregame meal.
- 30:32Speaker 9: Right now?
- 30:33Speaker 8: I've been ripping through. Uh, Chef t down in Miami.
- 30:36Speaker 8: It makes an incredible Italian sandwich. So typically it's been that,
- 30:40Speaker 8: but uh, I'll also go Chef's choice of whatever sandwhich
- 30:43Speaker 8: he's feeling for that day.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Oh man, you get to I mean, I guess you
- 30:47Speaker 3: don't get the Cuban because we always will get the
- 30:49Speaker 3: Cuban when we will go down to Miami. So at home,
- 30:52Speaker 3: do you get the Cubans at home?
- 30:54Speaker 2: Uh?
- 30:54Speaker 8: Look, my my heart with Cuban sandwiches belongs to Bodega
- 30:57Speaker 8: and Saint Pete. It's right by the trop and it's
- 31:00Speaker 8: probably the best Cuban sandwich you'll find.
- 31:03Speaker 3: So you don't even you don't you don't cheat on.
- 31:05Speaker 8: Your I don't even doubt no if I would get
- 31:07Speaker 8: I don't order a Cuban from any place except for
- 31:10Speaker 8: Bodega and Saint Pete.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Okay, so two parts to my final question and then
- 31:16Speaker 3: we'll let you go. You're in Philly, Okay. First of all,
- 31:20Speaker 3: I'm coming. I'm bringing my team down. We're gonna be
- 31:22Speaker 3: on the field. My high school team we won the
- 31:24Speaker 3: state championship, so we'll be on the field pregame today.
- 31:27Speaker 3: So I expect you to come out say hi to
- 31:29Speaker 3: tell'll find you, don't you worry? And there's twenty twenty
- 31:33Speaker 3: dudes on the team, and I'm gonna say seven of
- 31:36Speaker 3: them know who you are. The rest have will have
- 31:38Speaker 3: no idea who you are. But will you partake in
- 31:44Speaker 3: the Philly steak and cheese that they have in a clubhouse?
- 31:48Speaker 3: I know you're not going to go for the eating contest,
- 31:50Speaker 3: but will you eat a Philly steak and cheese because
- 31:53Speaker 3: they're the best in Philly, in the in the visiting
- 31:56Speaker 3: clubhouse in Philly?
- 31:58Speaker 8: I sure will? I think I had three or four
- 32:00Speaker 8: the last time I was here. Yeah, that's my normally,
- 32:03Speaker 8: I'll show up. That's that's lunch every day.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Do you know what the record is for a four
- 32:08Speaker 3: game series.
- 32:10Speaker 8: I thought it was like twenty or something like that,
- 32:13Speaker 8: twenty or twenty one. It's something that I it was
- 32:16Speaker 8: almost repulsive to see, like the full sized cheese tacking.
- 32:19Speaker 8: Then imagine somebody eating as many as it was.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Marcus handle the bullpen catcher for the Brewers. I think
- 32:27Speaker 3: it's twenty seven is what he ate. He ate twenty
- 32:30Speaker 3: seven of them, and then off day Monday, and he
- 32:34Speaker 3: woke up at twelve o'clock in the after like at noon,
- 32:38Speaker 3: and he started sweating and his chest started to like convulse,
- 32:43Speaker 3: and he said his right hand felt numb. He's like,
- 32:48Speaker 3: you might not have had a heart attack, but you
- 32:50Speaker 3: were pre heart attacked as close as you Yeah, yes, yes.
- 32:55Speaker 1: He saw his life flashing before his eyes thanks to
