- 0:16Scott.
- 0:17Our guest, Lars Anderson is a New York Times best selling author of 12 books including the Storm and the Tide and the Mannings.
- 0:24Five of his books have been options for movies.
- 0:26He's a 20 year veteran of Sports Illustrated.
- 0:29Anderson wrote more than two dozen cover stories for the magazine.
- 0:32The reason he's here today is his latest book is out now, wherever you get your books.
- 0:37Brady An American Story and the Price of Greatness.
- 0:40Lars, welcome to the mixtape.
- 0:42Hey, thank you guys so much for having me.
- 0:44Seriously.
- 0:46So I want to start at the beginning, which is you get a call from your literary agent, Susan Canavan, I believe I'm saying that right.
- 0:54Yep.
- 0:55And she says, you've got to write, Brady, and you got to write it big.
- 0:59So what lightning bolt hits you at that point?
- 1:02Is it fear?
- 1:04Is it excitement?
- 1:06It's abject terror.
- 1:10I mean, my first inclination was like, if we can speak freely.
- 1:16What?
- 1:17Yes, we can.
- 1:17Are you talking about.
- 1:22Because I, I, it's such a monumental project.
- 1:27Right.
- 1:28And I thought about it for a while.
- 1:33I called, first thing I did, I think even before saying yes, was I called my friend Armin Katayan.
- 1:41Okay.
- 1:41I'm now writing a book with, But Armin, he worked at Sports Illustrated a long time.
- 1:47CBS News, 60 Minutes, HBO Real Sports, which I don't think exists anymore.
- 1:56Yeah, I don't think it does either.
- 1:57Yeah, but, but anyway, Arm and I, we're working on a book on youth sports in America now.
- 2:02Fantastic.
- 2:04Yeah, just about in about how messed up it is.
- 2:08And we're trying to come up with some prescriptive measures to try to keep hear what is all wrong.
- 2:16I mean it's, as you guys know, it's bad.
- 2:18Yes.
- 2:19Anyway, I called Armin because he had co written a book on Tiger woods that I think reached number one on the times list.
- 2:28Jeff Benedict.
- 2:30I'm like, h, how do you start something like this?
- 2:32He said, we spent a year just making a detailed timeline and just every significant event in Tiger's life made note of it year by year.
- 2:46And so that's what I did with Tom after I told Susan, yes, I will accept this suicide mission.
- 2:56If you.
- 2:57Can get me enough money.
- 2:58Right.
- 2:59And, and yeah, so we got, got a great editor at Celadon Books and who believes in it.
- 3:09And so I spent about a year just reading absolutely everything on Tom.
- 3:14And I had, you know, quite a bit of familiarity with him because in 2017 I wrote a book with Bruce Arians, who was then the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
- 3:26And then when Tampa won their super bowl with Tom.
- 3:32Bruce and I worked together, although he didn't have, like a byline on the book, but he opened all the doors of access to me to Tampa for a book called A Season in the Sun.
- 3:45And that was the first time I ever saw Tom through the eyes of the coaches, through the eyes of teammates, through the eyes of, you know, the cafeteria workers.
- 3:58And immediately I thought that even then, that there was something a hell of a lot more to Tom Brady than people really understand, because there is.
- 4:14For someone who is a self described loner introvert, when he walks into a room, man, you feel his presence before you even see him.
- 4:25I mean, in.
- 4:29You know.
- 4:30And the reason Susan, my agent, even mentioned Tom is a possibility was I told her this little story that happened, and it was on my 50th birthday, April 5, 2021.
- 4:44I have.
- 4:45Tom and I have been exchanging text messages because Bruce is basically forcing him to talk to me for Season in the sun, right?
- 4:53And it's my 50th birthday.
- 4:56I haven't seen my mom in, like, two and a half years because of the pandemic and all that stuff.
- 5:02And she lives in D.C.
- 5:03and I'm in Birmingham, Alabama, which is a long story unto itself.
- 5:08But.
- 5:10I.
- 5:11I'm in my.
- 5:12I'm sitting right where I'm sitting now, and I see my mom pulls into the driveway, and I'm like, oh, my God, my mom.
- 5:19Right at that very second, this thing lights up with the name Tom Brady on it, right?
- 5:28I was like, there's no way it could be Tom.
- 5:30It just lit up again as I held it up.
- 5:32I'm like, oh, my God.
- 5:36So I'm faced with, like, this moral dilemma.
- 5:38Like, most important person in my world is right there who I haven't seen, who I want to go hug.
- 5:44Yeah, I got the hardest person in the world to get in touch with right here.
- 5:49But it was an easy decision.
- 5:51I told Tom, I'm sorry, brother, I gotta call you back.
- 5:54Like, we can't do it right now.
- 5:56And Tom was just.
- 5:57He was very nice.
- 5:59He said, lars, go be with your family.
- 6:02Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 6:04Well, of course we never figure it out.
- 6:06I never speak to him, actually, ever again.
- 6:11But so I told Susan that story, and she's like, oh, you got into Tom, you know, that she thought about for a day.
- 6:19So anyway, so.
- 6:20Yeah, where do you start?
- 6:21We started with the timeline.
- 6:23And then I knew that I was going to need help.
- 6:28And so I went back to, like, my SI days and when we would do A big profile or investigative piece, you'd have a, like the main senior writer.
- 6:41And then you'd also sometimes attach one, two, even three reporters, younger reporters to help with the story.
- 6:51And so at one point I had three young reporters working for me full time.
- 6:57And I also brought in.
- 7:01It used to be a guy named Tom Ehrenberg, used to be the top, used to be the sports editor@al.com alabama.com news site.
- 7:11And so there's five of us and we would have zoom calls like once a week, twice a week.
- 7:18And the mandate was to work the fringes because again, that's what we did at Sports Illustrated.
- 7:25So I wanted to talk to the punter who had been in training camp, you know, for two weeks in 2007.
- 7:34I wanted to talk to anyone who had crossed paths.
- 7:39And I referred to these as like the dinner party interviews, because the one question I wanted to ask and the one question I wanted the reporters to ask was if you were at a dinner party, what is the
- 7:56one Tom Brady story you're going to tell everyone?
- 7:59Because even though the punter was only there two weeks, guarantee you he's got a Tom Brady story.
- 8:04Absolutely right.
- 8:05Because everyone is paying attention to Tom Brady.
- 8:08And Tom, I'm sure, doesn't remember most of these people, you know, and one of my favorite one of these dinner party interviews was a tight end who, who grew up in Tennessee, I think this is 2011.
- 8:23Big Payton Manning fan, hates Tom Brady.
- 8:27Grew up hating Tom Brady.
- 8:29And you know, that that's a whole another issue of like why people hate Tom Brady so much or why, you know, you either love him or you hate him kind of thing.
- 8:40But this guy, he gets to New England after the second game.
- 8:47It's played at Gillette, as you guys know.
- 8:50I'm sure that after the game, the players and family members, there's a cordoned off private area where there's refreshments and they all just kind of hang out and decompress a little bit.
- 9:03And the tight end had his parents with him and he sees Tom talking to, to Giselle and wants to go introduce his parents to Tom, even though all of them, like grew up, you know, no.
- 9:16Big Tom Brady fans.
- 9:18Anyway, walking towards Tom, Tom sees him coming before the tight end can introduce his parents.
- 9:25Tom turns around, extends his hand and says, nice to meet you, Mike.
- 9:29Nice to meet you, Linda.
- 9:31And it is blown away.
- 9:34It's the most disarming thing.
- 9:36It's the most disarming magic trick.
- 9:38Blown away that Tom took the time to read up on the biography of this tight end who was on the team for just one more week.
- 9:49Right.
- 9:49He probably only got in just a handful of plays, whatever.
- 9:54And you know what he told us was, I will do anything for Tom Brady for the rest of my life because I saw how he made my parents feel.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:05And I think it goes back to, Tom is a relationship driven leader.
- 10:11And you can find the roots of that and the fact that he grew up in a household dominated by women.
- 10:18Right.
- 10:19Three older sisters.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:20Who are all superior athletes.
- 10:23And so I think that Tom's leadership style is actually more feminine than traditionally masculine, as more than more traditionally has more traditionally feminine characterist than masculine characteristics.
- 10:39And it's rare in the NFL.
- 10:41Right.
- 10:41And it worked for Tom.
- 10:44And.
- 10:45And this is the crazy thing.
- 10:47And I got no skin in the fight here.
- 10:49Right.
- 10:49Or skin, like, I got.
- 10:51I got no skin in the game in terms of, like, whether or not I had any preconceived notions of Tom.
- 10:59I grew up in Nebraska.
- 11:01I live in Alabama.
- 11:03I didn't cover the NFL other than, you know, with Bruce Arans.
- 11:07And I was just shocked to find that of everyone we interviewed, no one said a bad word about his character.
- 11:13No one said, he's such a jerk.
- 11:16You know, people disagreed with decisions he had made and.
- 11:19But no one ever said that.
- 11:21Oh, man.
- 11:22This one time, Tom treated me so bad.
- 11:25Yeah.
- 11:25Like nothing.
- 11:26Nothing.
- 11:27Incredible.
- 11:28I wanted to ask you about trying to find people.
- 11:31Yeah, yeah.
- 11:32And you couldn't find anybody.
- 11:33That was the thing is.
- 11:34Is like, there's a part in the book where a linebacker intercepts him in training camp.
- 11:41And he comes back, Brady comes up to him on the walk into the locker room and says, that's that.
- 11:47Great job, great play.
- 11:48That will never happen again.
- 11:50And the.
- 11:51I believe the.
- 11:52The way that you write that is that basically it was like, did you feel like he was being arrogant, that he was being braggadocious?
- 11:59And.
- 11:59And he was like, no, that's just.
- 12:01He was just an honest communicator.
- 12:03We all respected him.
- 12:05We never felt he crossed the line.
- 12:07And I mean, do you feel like that that's why his.
- 12:11Those teams had those success, you know, had that success, why everybody was bought in was because of his communication skills.
- 12:19It's a big part of it.
- 12:20I think also, you know, Tom, when growing up in San Mateo, California, he was a little pudgy as like a third, fourth, fifth grader.
- 12:35Like, yeah.
- 12:36You know, a lot of kids are right.
- 12:38You just haven't shed the baby fat yet.
- 12:41And he would, he was also exquisitely slow, like even slower than he was in his career.
- 12:49Right.
- 12:50And so he'd be the last kid picked in neighborhood games.
- 12:54There were times when, like kids would, older kids would tell little Tommy to run deep and then they would turn around and run the other way.
- 13:03I mean, it's just like mild form bullying.
- 13:06Right.
- 13:06But that does something to a kid.
- 13:09And had several offensive linemen tell me, I don't want to be like, say the politically incorrect thing, but that, that he still viewed himself as like a fat kid.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22And when he, that's what he saw when he looked in the mirror.
- 13:25Right.
- 13:25And I always love talking to the O line.
- 13:28Right.
- 13:28Because those guys are generally the smartest dudes on the team and they'll give you like the real truth.
- 13:35And there is so many guys who felt that like Tom was one of us, you know, and also another dynamic that went into the whole success was that because Tom was not a first round pick and he was
- 13:52a sixth round pick early on, Belichick just absolutely would light into him.
- 14:01Yeah.
- 14:02And in a way that there's no way he would ever have done that to Drew Bledsoe.
- 14:07Right.
- 14:07If Bledsoe had stuck, if Bledsoe had stuck around.
- 14:10You know, number one overall pick, it's got the highest contract in, in the league and, but Tom would take it, and he would take it all throughout.
- 14:22He took it for about 18 of his 20 years.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:25Right.
- 14:25And then, you know, when you see that your quarterback is willing to take this sort of really, it was verbal abuse.
- 14:35It was just, it's ridiculous, the stuff that Belichick did.
- 14:39But Tom just waited.
- 14:41You know, I, I, I specifically remember the scene in the book where it's like Randy Moss and Dante Stallworth, I think they signed on the same year.
- 14:51In the very first meeting, Belichick is saying Johnny F.
- 14:54And Foxborough could have made that throw.
- 14:56You know, it's a famous anecdote.
- 14:58Right.
- 14:59And it's like all of a sudden Randy Moss is like, oh, yeah, yeah.
- 15:04They're, they're mouthing holy to each other.
- 15:07Yeah, exactly.
- 15:08Like, oh, this is different.
- 15:10And so I, I, I think that helped the dynamic of the entire team.
- 15:17But you know, when they ultimately, Tom and Giselle go over to Kraft's house, it's Giselle that does most of the talking.
- 15:26And just saying that Belichick doesn't treat Tommy like a man.
- 15:31Yeah.
- 15:32And once you have your wife saying that, man, it's, yeah, yeah, it's done.
- 15:39I, I, I was gonna Ask you if you at any point wanted to name the book Johnny Foxborough.
- 15:48That was like I had.
- 15:50Yeah, I was, I love that.
- 15:51That was Belichick's go to insult whenever anything Brady did wrong in film that he would just.
- 15:57I can go get Johnny Fox bro down the street to throw a better pass in that.
- 16:05I, I don't want to step over Scott.
- 16:07Scott's got some questions too.
- 16:08But I am absolutely fascinated by the Giselle relationship.
- 16:13Yeah.
- 16:13And I'm curious.
- 16:15I felt like in the book it's treated with delicacy.
- 16:21Like you're, you're, you're.
- 16:22I think that there is an easy way or, or maybe even a lazy way as a writer.
- 16:28Thank you for saying that.
- 16:30Because I am not a writer that wants to get into people's business.
- 16:36Yeah, I don't.
- 16:38But silly me, because of how I set the book up, like that question's got to be resolved.
- 16:46Right?
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:47Because I begin as.
- 16:49Obviously you've read the book.
- 16:52I begin with their.
- 16:53Both of them kind of walking to the blind date in the West Village of Manhattan.
- 16:58And you know, to understand Tom, you have to understand why it didn't work.
- 17:06Yeah.
- 17:07And I tried my best to keep the kids out of it.
- 17:10I tried to be as sensitive as possible.
- 17:13I mean, I've been through two divorces.
- 17:15One of them in which like I still my kids, even though I'm 55.
- 17:21I waited later in life thinking I was winning to have kids because I wanted to really have fun in my 30s and 40s.
- 17:29But.
- 17:30So I'm 55 and I have 11 year old son and 9 year old twin girls.
- 17:35And you know, I went through a divorce when they were really little and it, it was absolutely devastating.
- 17:43You know, my dad died when I was a lot younger and awfully, it was horrible, but it didn't compare to the pain of, of losing the ability to sleep under the same roof with your kids every night.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 17:59And so I think one of the reasons, to me, the, the most powerful part of the book is, is it's the day or the evening before the divorce is finalized.
- 18:12Tampa loses a game and there's a scene of Tom just sitting in front of his locker, full uniform on, despondent, like in a catatonic state like this.
- 18:26Like, never had Tom Brady looked less like Tom Brady.
- 18:31Yeah.
- 18:32At that moment.
- 18:33I mean, he had been reduced to a broken man because of the decisions he had made.
- 18:41Yeah.
- 18:41Right.
- 18:42And you have to understand, like, that's the reason I get into it.
- 18:48Right.
- 18:48Get into the nature of what went wrong between them because it is more complicated than just, oh, Tom kept playing.
- 18:58You know, it was just that he wasn't around.
- 19:01And I think Giselle wanted somebody who was around essentially.
- 19:06And people told me stuff that I kept out.
- 19:13You know, I just, I, the one thing, this was so important to me and I, I, I like hand on Bible guys, I did not know and I don't know if you guys have looked, but this was gone.
- 19:29Around the world, like, you know, I'm getting calls from like, reporters in, in Brazil, Japan, India, Australia.
- 19:41She's Germany.
- 19:42Somebody in Germany wants to translate the book into German because they're just so.
- 19:47And, and the funny thing is, it's not Tom Brady driving this.
- 19:50Yeah.
- 19:51It's g.
- 19:52Yeah.
- 19:55Yeah.
- 19:55And, and I, I, I reflect back on what David Nugent told me.
- 20:01And David, you know, lived with Tom, I think, first three years in Foxborough at 9 Cherrywood Lane.
- 20:07He said that.
- 20:08And he's a really smart cat as well, that he worried about Tom when he started going out with Giselle because of the level of fame, that it was just going to go through the stratosphere, right.
- 20:22And like the most recognizable couple in the world.
- 20:25And Tom is, he's a shy introvert, you know, and yeah, it was, it was tough.
- 20:33I mean, hall of fame was tough.
- 20:35I mean, at the time, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a sports guy.
- 20:38I'm not a fashion model, business understanding guy.
- 20:42So, you know, at the time, she's making $50 million a year.
- 20:46Like, you could argue she's the most desirable person in terms of advertising, marketing, whatever, branding.
- 20:55At that time, I think you can.
- 20:57Make the argument that she's the most beautiful woman by many metrics to ever walk the planet.
- 21:02100% magazine covers.
- 21:05Yeah.
- 21:05And the, the fame, you know, as popular as Brady is here in America, it's like you said.
- 21:12And I, what's funny is I had texted Scott when all those stories started hitting three or four weeks ago about the Giselle stuff, and I went, oh, wow.
- 21:23Like the, like, when I got to the Giselle part, it all clicked for me because it was just like, she is just this juggernaut.
- 21:33And, you know, he is, he's coming off the field from the greatest comeback in NFL history, maybe sports history.
- 21:41And the first thing out of her mouth is, this is a great way to walk off.
- 21:46Like this is.
- 21:47And she asks him several times during the night, and finally he turns and looks at her and basically he's like, I'm having too much fun.
- 21:55Babe, it ain't happening.
- 21:57And I'm just wondering, like, was that the beginning of the end?
- 22:00Because she is.
- 22:02When I say delicacy, like you are telling us, you know, I think you could.
- 22:06She is a very new age.
- 22:08She wants to be in nature.
- 22:09She wants to.
- 22:11She believes in healing rocks and things of that need, crystals and things of that nature.
- 22:16And I think you can make her a caricature.
- 22:20And I.
- 22:21Home birth.
- 22:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:25He's like, we're absolutely.
- 22:26What do you say?
- 22:27It's 2009.
- 22:27We're absolutely not doing that.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:30So he's like, yeah, we are.
- 22:32Yes.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:34Okay.
- 22:35My.
- 22:35My question, though, is.
- 22:37Is basically, you know, was that the.
- 22:39Like, in that 28 to 3 comeback night?
- 22:42Like, she's pleading throughout the book.
- 22:44She's pleading for him to stop and to make this life with her.
- 22:47And he can't do it.
- 22:48He just can't turn it off.
- 22:50And, like, do you feel like that was kind of the beginning of the end for them?
- 22:53You know, I know it was death by a thousand cuts, but, yeah,.
- 23:00Certainly.
- 23:01And Giselle kept remarking on their first date and how Tom laid out this vision.
- 23:09He had won two Super Bowls.
- 23:11I think it's December 2006, and he said, I'm going to play for 10 more years.
- 23:16Yeah.
- 23:17Hopefully I'll win one more super bowl, and then I'm done.
- 23:21Right.
- 23:21So that would get you to 2016.
- 23:24And that was, I think, right around the Atlanta comeback, you know, and his mom was there and beating the cancer, and just, like, it would have been a perfect time to.
- 23:37To walk away for him.
- 23:39But look, man, like, you guys know this.
- 23:44Sports ends for all of us who love sports.
- 23:47Right.
- 23:47Who play sports, like, some ends in junior high, some in high school, some in college.
- 23:54It is so difficult to let go.
- 23:58And you just won a Super bowl, and you're telling me I gotta walk away.
- 24:02I mean, I can see both sides of it.
- 24:06I totally can see both sides of it.
- 24:08But you gotta remember Giselle, like, you know, football to her involves a round sphere.
- 24:17Yeah.
- 24:19Not a.
- 24:20Not a pig skin.
- 24:21And I don't think she could just understand, like, why he couldn't just walk away and be with the family and just be a more present father.
- 24:37But if you go back and you analyze Tom's childhood and, like, you know, his sisters were such good athletes.
- 24:48He learned at a young age, like, the best way to get the attention of people who he loved was to succeed at sports.
- 24:57And so this is, like, deeply ingrained, you know, like, he is not.
- 25:03I.
- 25:03I just.
- 25:04I just did an interview, and they asked, like, oh, what, was he like, Tom?
- 25:07Or was he like Kobe Bryant?
- 25:10Like, well, he's like Kobe Bryant and mentality, sure, but background, Hell no.
- 25:15Like, there ain't nothing that came easy to Tom.
- 25:20And I never.
- 25:21That was another reason why I wanted to do this book, because it seems like there's this popular perception that Tom was born on third base with a silver spoon.
- 25:32Yeah, that absolutely is not the case.
- 25:35I mean, he has.
- 25:37He grew up in this middle class and, you know, two loving parents and three loving sisters and really a great family.
- 25:45But, man, like, nothing came easy for him, and it never was easy.
- 25:53Right.
- 25:53And.
- 25:54And like, in the Drew Henson situation in, In.
- 25:57In Michigan really messed with him, I think, psychologically, because even when he was winning super bowl after super bowl in New England, he always was worrying that Drew Henson's going to be walking through the door.
- 26:12Right.
- 26:12The next Drew Henson is going to be walking through the door.
- 26:14And people have asked, oh, is Tom a good mentor to people?
- 26:17Hell, no.
- 26:18Because they could be a Drew Henson.
- 26:20As far as he goes.
- 26:21Right.
- 26:22Yeah.
- 26:25Lars, I absolutely love the book, and I think what.
- 26:27I'm a sports biography junkie, and I think the reason being.
- 26:34And what you do such a great job with this book of is like, I always look at it as what created this monster.
- 26:40Right.
- 26:41In this case, not monster, but competitive monster, I guess you could say, or what were the things.
- 26:45And so often I feel like biographies don't paint that whole picture.
- 26:51And you do a really good job of going all the way back to his household, how he was raised, and every step along the way.
- 26:57And I think, you know, so many people, the initial thought is just that Bledsoe injury, that sliding door moment there.
- 27:05But what were some of the.
- 27:07And you've alluded to some of them already, but what do you think are, like, the two or three most important aspects, you know, you know, well, before that, that kind of created the Tom Brady that was able to
- 27:20then take advantage of that moment.
- 27:24Thank you for saying that, because everything I.
- 27:29That is of length, I always like mine.
- 27:33The childhood.
- 27:34To try to understand what elements of the childhood fostered the.
- 27:43The environment or the.
- 27:45The.
- 27:45The conditions for the person to become that person.
- 27:49And I mean, I.
- 27:51I think just the most.
- 27:53One of the most significant events was at Michigan.
- 27:57He's still a young man.
- 27:59He's not, you know, he's like fifth string.
- 28:03I'm sure you guys know this.
- 28:03His first pass at Michigan was a pick six I'm actually working on a book on another, also another book on Patrick Mahomes.
- 28:11Mahomes's first pick, first throw in college also was a pick six.
- 28:17Interesting.
- 28:18Not relevant to anything.
- 28:20By the way, it's so fascinating comparing Mahomes, you know, son of major league pitcher to Tom.
- 28:29I mean, they just could not have more different upbringing.
- 28:33And like everything came natural to Pat.
- 28:36Everything was easy for him.
- 28:38Yeah.
- 28:38But at Michigan, you know, I think it's at the end of his red shirt sophomore year, has an appendicitis, loses 20 pounds, feels like he's not getting treated fairly by the coaching staff, is psychologically in a bad place,
- 28:58and he does something that you see his father do.
- 29:01Like I don't, I don't state this like explicitly, but I want the reader to know the fa.
- 29:08His dad had to go seek psychiatric help after his Tommy went across the country, you know, but he had the awareness to go.
- 29:18He like, knew that he needed to talk to somebody about his problems.
- 29:22So what's the son do?
- 29:24The son follows the father, the, the lead of the father.
- 29:28And at Michigan he goes and meets with a guy named Greg Harden, who we talked to at length.
- 29:35And sadly, Greg passed away like about a few months after we, we spoke to him.
- 29:42But he started meeting with Tom and he described Tom as absolutely in a state of depression.
- 29:50Like this is a depressed, young, really skinny kid.
- 29:55And the number one thing or the first two important things emerged from Greg Hardin and their interactions.
- 30:04One is sort of obvious and, and now it's sort of entered into our vernacular and is control.
- 30:12The controllables, right?
- 30:14If you're gonna get two reps, man, make those the best two reps you possibly can.
- 30:20Don't worry about what anyone else is doing.
- 30:23Just focus on those two reps.
- 30:27And then you fast forward all these years later when he was practicing at New England.
- 30:31Man, practice was not a time to joke around, not even a time to smile really, man, it's, it's work, it's business.
- 30:40And a lot of, a lot of guys really marveled and respected that.
- 30:44But I think more importantly, Greg Harden asked him, what is it that you can do better than anyone else?
- 30:53Tom thought about it, he's like, well, I'm certainly not the best athlete.
- 30:57Frickin punters run faster than me.
- 31:01And I don't necessarily have the strongest arm on the team.
- 31:06And eventually gets to, well, I can, I can prepare better than anybody.
- 31:13Yeah, you know, like he can watch film as if every play contains the secrets of the universe in it.
- 31:22You know, and he can watch it.
- 31:24He can sustain concentration for, like, six, seven, even eight hours at a time.
- 31:31And I don't know if I believe that anybody has a photographic memory, but he's got something that's pretty dang close.
- 31:39And, and he would always take notes and, and I know this works for me personally, but if I write something down, I'm gonna remember it better.
- 31:49And so I think he did that.
- 31:52And this eventually gives him, in my view, like, this six, sense, like, telepathic power to know where the 21 other guys on the field are going to move before the ball hits his hands.
- 32:09And, you know, that all just goes back to knowing his limitations, masking his limitations, and really emphasizing his strengths.
- 32:22And there's a lot to learn there for.
- 32:24And there's so much in this book that I share with my own kids all the time.
- 32:30All the time.
- 32:31And, I mean, it's one of the great benefits of doing this.
- 32:38Just like how Tom would tell himself he'd play this mind trick when he was really tired, you know, didn't want to get out of bed.
- 32:46He's like, nope, my body is not beating my mind today.
- 32:50Not today, not ever.
- 32:53Get up, get up.
- 32:54You know, and, like, it was like he's, he's fighting this contrasting battle within himself, but his mind was so strong that he always could get himself to the facility for that workout or, or to watch more film and,
- 33:09and, you know, I share that with my kids and so many other things.
- 33:14And I'll just finally say on this, you know, I'm buddies with a lot of guys who do biographies, like, like this one.
- 33:24And so often you end up absolutely hating the person you're writing about.
- 33:30Right.
- 33:30Like, you live in their head for three years, and you, you see this all the.
- 33:36Right.
- 33:36Yeah, I, and I'm not afraid to say this.
- 33:40I admire Tom.
- 33:42Yeah, I do.
- 33:44I mean, would I have made some of the decisions he.
- 33:47I probably would.
- 33:48I mean, I, I, I, I, I'm.
- 33:50And I have been accused of being, I've been accused of, like, everything, whatever, man, like, of being, of being, like, overly reverential.
- 34:00But I call it the result of exhaustive search.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:06Because again, like, I, I had no preconceived notions going into this.
- 34:12And I, I, I just, I, I find him to be more fascinating now than I did when I started this whole thing.
- 34:23I bet.
- 34:24I, you know, one of the, one of the moments that really stuck with me, Lars, like, once, and I was bouncing in between reading it and listening to a little bit on the audible as well.
- 34:35And I was on a run listening to the.
- 34:38The I.
- 34:38It's somewhere around chapter 20, 21, 22, something like that.
- 34:41But it's the.
- 34:43When the team is going to the barbecue joint and the inhale a beer moment.
- 34:48And I was just.
- 34:49I really.
- 34:49That is also.
- 34:50That's one of my favorite three scenes in the book.
- 34:52It was amazing.
- 34:53And I just stopped what I was doing because I.
- 34:55And I almost wanted to cry kind of, because I was just like, who is this guy?
- 35:00Because, I mean, he just read it perfectly that this is what I've got to do to unlock a whole nother level of camaraderie, build their faith in me, be with them, be one of them.
- 35:11And at that point, he's already larger than life.
- 35:15But just.
- 35:16He knew exactly what to do in that moment.
- 35:18And of course, it was something that.
- 35:19Because you tell us from earlier in the book, he.
- 35:22He.
- 35:22He didn't shy away from a beer from time to time.
- 35:26And he kind of.
- 35:27You had kind of teed up that he had this secret ability to just unhinge his jaw or whatever.
- 35:33But that stuck with me.
- 35:34I mean, I just kept getting further and further in the book, but my mind would just keep drifting back to tying it back to this moment of.
- 35:41This is a guy that understands the perception at all times of everyone around him, of that perception of him.
- 35:51You know what I mean?
- 35:52And just phenomenal.
- 35:54Phenomenal.
- 35:55Yeah.
- 35:56Just.
- 35:56I'll quickly.
- 35:57Just.
- 35:58That story.
- 35:59It was after the win in Buffalo.
- 36:03Nor' Easter is blowing into Boston, so they can't fly back.
- 36:08The hotel they were staying in, you know, had been booked, and so now there's not rooms there.
- 36:15They eventually find a.
- 36:17A hotel where they all stay at.
- 36:20They're staying the night, and there happens to be like, a barbecue joint close by, like, across the street.
- 36:26They're all begging Tom to come, and he's like, I don't know.
- 36:30I don't know.
- 36:31But he.
- 36:32He always does that.
- 36:33And it's not because he doesn't want to interact.
- 36:37It's just whenever Tom goes into a restaurant, it suddenly, it's all about Tom.
- 36:46Sure, sure.
- 36:46And.
- 36:47And he hates that.
- 36:48It's exhausting.
- 36:49Absolutely hates that.
- 36:51And I've seen it.
- 36:52I mean, I've seen it many times with my own eyes.
- 36:54Like, he hates that.
- 36:57And so this night he arrives late and, you know, so there's some smack talk going on about who can drink a beer the fastest, who can chug a beer the fastest.
- 37:10And Tom's finally kind of like playing it off and, you know, and.
- 37:16And eventually he gets a beer.
- 37:20And he can drink a beer faster than anybody I've ever seen.
- 37:23Okay.
- 37:24Like, it's.
- 37:25He's got like these weird skills.
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:29Like.
- 37:29Like he.
- 37:31He has like this trick shot in basketball where he's at this, like this impossible angle from the side and he banks it a three pointer in like all the time.
- 37:43Bank, bank, bank.
- 37:45And in.
- 37:47In.
- 37:47In that moment, like he just.
- 37:48In, in.
- 37:49In Buffalo, the snowstorm.
- 37:52He absolutely just destroyed the offensive lineman.
- 37:55Yeah.
- 37:55Just takes it down, slams the beer down.
- 37:59And I remember Ross Tucker saying it was just the most quintessential Tom Brady moment of all time and had nothing to do with sports.
- 38:07Him just like, owning the room.
- 38:12It also hearkened back to.
- 38:14Because I believe in the book, it's mentioned that it's Todd Light who, when Brady walks in, claims the lineman will win.
- 38:21No one can beat the lineman at this chugging beer.
- 38:23And I'm drawn back to one of my other favorite parts of the book was when Light wears his cashmere sweater to do deadlifts in or whatever and then sends him the picture of it and says, hey, check your
- 38:36phone or whatever, you know, and it felt to me too, like in the really long game that is Tom Brady, I feel like there was just a little bit of a yeah, yeah, watch this, I still got you
- 38:47or whatever moment with even them, you know, a little bit of pulling rank and showing I am the man.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:56You know, I so appreciate, like, I've gotten killed by some reviewers and I don't even know why.
- 39:03Like the New Yorker, they spent like four and a half, five pages just dumping on me.
- 39:10And it's like, why, why, why, why, why even review it if you're just gonna take a big steaming on me?
- 39:19And I, whatever.
- 39:21But a John Bacon, who is.
- 39:26Is a good dude, great writer, lives in Michigan and like, he.
- 39:32He did a review for the Wall Street Journal and just this one line, just.
- 39:38I.
- 39:38I rarely read reviews, but those two have stuck with me.
- 39:41But, but John wrote, hey, this.
- 39:45There's fun in this book.
- 39:47Yeah, basically.
- 39:48And there is fun.
- 39:49Like, we.
- 39:51It's so easy just to be like, negative about Tom and, And I didn't want to like, re.
- 39:56Litigate, deflate gate.
- 39:58I mean, that is like so incredibly uninteresting to me because I just, I wanted to get.
- 40:04I wanted to get to know the.
- 40:05The man.
- 40:06Like the, the child and the man, so to speak.
- 40:09And there is, There's a lot of fun in the book and I appreciate you bringing that up?
- 40:16We talked to Alan Shipnock about three or four months ago for Rory.
- 40:23He's one of my best friends.
- 40:24Yeah, I would like to talk Sports Illustrated before we go, but he, and I'm sure you've heard this story, but he basically said that he was sitting down with a friend and he was like, hey, don't forget, we
- 40:37still need heroes.
- 40:39And he's coming off the live stuff and it's like.
- 40:41And I've, I felt like, I, I felt like that with the Brady, you know, with this book.
- 40:47Like, I felt like, you know, you're basically saying, I can't find anybody that wants to call him a jerk.
- 40:53Like, and, you know, you are giving us the, you know, meat and potatoes of what this success has come at, you know, and, and I know that it kind of maybe got away from me a little bit with
- 41:06the tabloid side wanting to pick up and glean things from it, but.
- 41:10Well, I probably should have, I, I probably should have anticipated it because I love my publisher, right.
- 41:17I'm on a three book deal with them.
- 41:20But it was their decision to do the excerpt with the Daily Mail of London rather than say, yeah, I don't know, somewhere a little bit, yeah, less like them.
- 41:38It's, it's still a game.
- 41:39You still gotta.
- 41:40We're, yeah, we're, we're still.
- 41:42Yay, capitalism.
- 41:43So, hey, don't.
- 41:45We don't knock the hustle.
- 41:48So I, I do want to segue real quick because the Giselle, we talked a little bit about Giselle wanting him to retire.
- 41:57That wasn't the only person in his life towards the end that wanted him to retire.
- 42:01Belichick wanted him to retire.
- 42:03And, you know, I, I wanted you to kind of talk a little bit about the dynamic of their relationship as it went along and then deteriorated.
- 42:10But you, you put it, you've got in the book that basically they never had lunch together.
- 42:16And I'm just like, how do you win six Super Bowls together, have a 20 year relationship and not once do you share, you know, a plate of hummus or whatever Brady was eating towards the end.
- 42:29So how does that, like, when you approach their relationship and what did you discover, you know, that interested you from that,.
- 42:39You know, toward the end there it is fascinating to me that they never had dinner, never had lunch, never interacted socially.
- 42:50And Tom, as we've talked about, he's a relationship kind of person, yet the one person that he needed to form the closest relationship with was unwilling to do that.
- 43:03And I also thought it was interesting when Tom and Giselle end up going to Kraft's house.
- 43:10Yeah, it's really Giselle.
- 43:13Yeah, that, that, that does the, the, the hard talking where she's essentially saying that, that, that, that, that Bill doesn't treat Tommy like a man.
- 43:27And even, you know, in, in harsher words than that.
- 43:31And I think that right there, that's the end.
- 43:34When your wife says to the, your boss that the, the guy who's in charge of you day in and day out doesn't treat you like a man.
- 43:42Like, I.
- 43:43There was just no going back from that.
- 43:45And Bruce Arans is the absolute opposite of Belichick.
- 43:50You know, he wants to be known as the cool uncle that you can go have a beer with.
- 43:56Right.
- 43:57And, and Bruce, I, I was on the business end of many sessions from Bruce and he, he can be tough on you, man, but he also will love you, you know, And I think Tom found something in Bruce
- 44:13that he never had in Belichick.
- 44:16It's just a breath of fresh air.
- 44:18Like from the jump, you could just tell that Brady was rejuvenated when he went to Tampa.
- 44:26But.
- 44:28So if we can, before we, we let you go, you started in the mid-90s at Sports Illustrated, and the, the conceit of our podcast at the moment is we're working through the 1990s big sporting event at a time,
- 44:43so we're just casually taking our time.
- 44:45We're at the 90s, 1990 World Series at the moment, and Scott's a devout Cincinnati Reds fans.
- 44:52We're about to have a three parter about the, the, the four zero suite.
- 44:56But I just wanted you to talk a little bit about your memories cutting your teeth at Sports Illustrated, you know, kind of in that heyday.
- 45:06I hope you're a Bengals fan too, because I'm the biggest Bengals fan.
- 45:11My family's from Cincinnati and so my dad.
- 45:13I always say my dad and grandfather molded me.
- 45:16I live in Texas.
- 45:17Born and raised in Texas.
- 45:19This is the only Brady thing I've got in my house.
- 45:21The closest I can get to Brady.
- 45:23But yeah, I am a big Reds and Bengals fan,.
- 45:27Man.
- 45:27Going to si.
- 45:30I, I started in 1994.
- 45:34I was 23.
- 45:37I'm from Nebraska.
- 45:39I was the biggest, like, rube in the world.
- 45:43I remember going through the Lincoln Tunnel the first time I was.
- 45:48I'd never been to New York.
- 45:49I, I went to Columbia for grad school and I'm with my college girlfriend.
- 45:55Go through the Lincoln Tunnel.
- 45:57It's a Sunday.
- 45:58And going up Broadway, right north on Broadway, up to 116th street, where Columbia is.
- 46:06And of course, there's like, people out on the street.
- 46:09And I say, literally the dumbest thing I've ever said in my life,.
- 46:15Said,.
- 46:16Oh, my God, there must be a sale going on.
- 46:22I had no idea, man.
- 46:24Yeah, so I, I, I started there young.
- 46:30I had written for one publication, which was the manito messenger at St Olaf College, Readership 5, which is where I went to school, St Olive.
- 46:41So I was in a little bit over my head.
- 46:44But, you know, I was able to just watch, really watch other people and, and learn and, and slowly work my way up the masthead.
- 46:57But like, for the 90s sporting event that I will not, I'll never forget covering was Sugar bowl national championship between Florida State and Virginia Tech.
- 47:12It was the first time I ever saw Michael Vick just go crazy.
- 47:16They lost that game, but I've never seen a player as electrifying as Michael Vick was that night.
- 47:25I could not believe it, like, just, it was just incredible.
- 47:31And I had spent some time with Michael before that game and with his mom and, and it was just un, unbelievable seeing that.
- 47:45And, and Peter Warwick had a big game that night.
- 47:48But yeah, being on the field, standing with Nancy Osborne, Tom Osborne's wife.
- 47:581990, after the 1996, it was 1996 Orange Bowl.
- 48:05It played in 1997, January 1st.
- 48:08And being with her as Tom won his third national championship.
- 48:14And I'm from Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 48:17I've known Nancy forever and just a special moment, you know, and there are just so many amazing things about Sports Illustrated back then.
- 48:31Like, right when I started, we, the magazine was doing so well.
- 48:35We took, they took the entire staff, I don't know if Shipnook told you about this.
- 48:39Took the entire, entire staff down to Orlando.
- 48:42And it was just like, we stayed at this beautiful hotel.
- 48:47They rented out Universal Studios one night and it was like everything was free, like, including, like, playing all the, all the games.
- 48:57I'm a big basketball player, so I won like, a bunch of big panda bears that night, you know, and man, it was a lot of fun.
- 49:11A lot of fun.
- 49:12A lot of fun.
- 49:13Like, my office was on the 19th floor, overlooked radio City Music Hall.
- 49:19And I remember one night, like, Beck would be warming up before, like, the Grammys on top of the marquee.
- 49:29One time I rode elevator.
- 49:31I, I get in the elevator, right?
- 49:34And I'm going up to the 19th floor and suddenly just like, really quickly, like a group of like five come in and standing right in front of me is Fidel Castro in full Uniform.
- 49:51And guess what?
- 49:52He smelled like a freaking cigar.
- 49:54Oh, that's how I want.
- 49:56That's how I would want Fidel Castro to smell.
- 49:58Exactly.
- 49:59It was.
- 50:00It was just.
- 50:01And again, I mean, I'm the guy who said, oh, there must be a sale going on.
- 50:05All.
- 50:05Yeah, yeah.
- 50:08It just.
- 50:09We.
- 50:09I.
- 50:09And I don't want to make this an Allen Ship nut podcast, but when.
- 50:13When we had him on, I had bought his first.
- 50:16I had bought his first article, which was about Griffey and like, hey, you know what?
- 50:21I remember the lead of that story.
- 50:23Yeah.
- 50:24The passing of the Mantle.
- 50:26Yes.
- 50:27Please tell me.
- 50:27Tell me if that.
- 50:28If that is true.
- 50:29The passing of the Mantle is worth the first.
- 50:32I'll read you the first six.
- 50:33Passing of the mantle is worthy in a pageant is worthy of pageantry.
- 50:36This is terrifying that you have this to memory.
- 50:41A passing of the Mantle is an occasion deserving of some pageantry.
- 50:45And so it was fitting that Ken Griffey Jr.
- 50:47Confirmed his standing as the new image of baseball amid the.
- 50:51Amid the banners and the ball balloon releases of this year's All Star Game in Pittsburgh.
- 50:57All right.
- 50:58Do you know how much it pissed me off when I read that?
- 51:00Because I'm like, Alan and I are the same age.
- 51:03Yeah.
- 51:04And he was writing at that level.
- 51:07Yeah.
- 51:07And I would.
- 51:08I couldn't even.
- 51:09I didn't know what a complete sentence was.
- 51:10Right.
- 51:12But Alan, off the charts talent and a nice guy.
- 51:16Just the fact, like, I.
- 51:17I hadn't held one of these from, like, the mid-90s, since when we like the fact that we got this every week to our mailbox and Walter iOS Jr.
- 51:27Is doing the portraits, and I'm like, we got this every week.
- 51:32Like, it was.
- 51:32It was.
- 51:33It was incredibly special then.
- 51:34But then to see it, like, now and just go, you know, I.
- 51:40I just can't believe we got that every week.
- 51:42Like, it was.
- 51:43It was literally the highlight of the week for me in high school was getting Sports Illustrated.
- 51:47So there is a.
- 51:48There is an oral history coming out of that.
- 51:51Yeah.
- 51:52And it's.
- 51:53It's being written by two guys who are represented by my agent, Susan Canavan.
- 51:57Two guys who are friends of mine.
- 52:00You should have them on the podcast before it comes out.
- 52:02It's 100.
- 52:04Adam Duerson and John Walters.
- 52:07Okay.
- 52:08Offline.
- 52:08I can give you guys their contact, but, yeah, it.
- 52:12They.
- 52:13They spent a lot of time on it.
- 52:15They talked of everybody.
- 52:17And, you know, there was.
- 52:20There was a lot of really strange stuff going on, but it was.
- 52:25It was wonderful.
- 52:27And you Know, I played on the SI basketball team, Shipnuk.
- 52:32You know, he was based on the west coast for the most part, but sometimes he would come in, he's got no game.
- 52:39But no, it was just a.
- 52:44It was a great time and so much fun.
- 52:46Just being in New York when you're young and in your 20s, it's just.
- 52:50It was beautiful.
- 52:51Yeah, no doubt.
- 52:52I was, I was curious if he had given you any kind of advice when you're, you know, when those excerpts started hitting and you started getting this attention with, you know, I mean, I, I can't imagine anybody getting
- 53:05caught in the tornado, in the hurricane like he did with Phil.
- 53:10So I was curious if he had given you any, like, hey, this is what you're about to deal with.
- 53:16Well, Ship, Knock and Phil have a really interesting background.
- 53:22Right?
- 53:23Yeah.
- 53:23Like, I believe.
- 53:23To say the least, I believe Phil.
- 53:25Challenged him to a fight.
- 53:27Yeah.
- 53:28Yeah.
- 53:30So, yeah, Tom and I.
- 53:32Tom's never challenged me to a fight.
- 53:35He would absolutely kick my ass.
- 53:37But.
- 53:42I didn't talk to Alan about it, but I actually.
- 53:48He may have texted me, but helped.
- 53:54Well, I shouldn't say that, but I was not expecting it.
- 53:58Like, hand on Bible truth.
- 54:00I was not expecting it.
- 54:02And it was somewhat.
- 54:03Not somewhat, but like, very disappointing to me because I had worked so hard on this thing and everybody's focused on three pages in the back that is just like tabloid stuff.
- 54:18And I only had it in there again.
- 54:20And I appreciate how you phrased it.
- 54:22I have it in there because you need to understand what happened to understand what the cost was for Tom.
- 54:31Right.
- 54:32And it just like, goes to show you that people just are so fascinated with celebrities and, and how they live and decisions they make.
- 54:45But you know what?
- 54:47They're all just like us.
- 54:49Yeah, they're just like us.
- 54:51Yeah.
- 54:52Yeah.
- 54:53My.
- 54:53I just came back from New York for a handful of days and my favorite thing is going up to celebrities on the street and acting as if we're friends.
- 55:04It's very.
- 55:05It's always very entertaining because they're always very accommodating.
- 55:09So my random and I hadn't told Scott this story, but my random was I ran into Anno Dowd.
- 55:14You know, Anno Doubt is Leftovers, Handmaid's Tale.
- 55:17She was walking on the street and I just went up to her and told her, you know, like, hey, we've met a couple times.
- 55:25I think you're a national treasure.
- 55:26And I got her to laugh and we had a 20 second conversation on street in New York.
- 55:31But that's My favorite thing to do is to.
- 55:34It's.
- 55:34They all.
- 55:35It, like, if you can get them to laugh, it's disarming and they'll sit there and.
- 55:37And chat with you.
- 55:38But anyway, bumped into Woody Allen once.
- 55:43That was.
- 55:44That was a pretty good, like, New York sighting.
- 55:47Oh, yeah, it was a little weird, but yeah, just it would happen all the time.
- 55:58Like, oh, my gosh.
- 56:03Kevin Bacon, like, lived across the street from.
- 56:07I got married to a girl in New York, and he lived on, really close to.
- 56:13On 89th Center Park West.
- 56:16And he would use the same subway stop as usual.
- 56:20And my wife, Sarah, like, she would swear that Kevin was gawking at her all the time, staring and.
- 56:29And like, you know, we lived in the neighborhood where I'd see Madonna every once in a while and I would have these, like, maybe we could be friends kind of thing.
- 56:40Yeah, it's crazy.
- 56:43It's.
- 56:44It's a heck of a book.
- 56:48Scott and I were talking about our favorite line, and I'm going to leave it with this.
- 56:52But at the end of the 28 to 3 after party, the last line of that chapter is the price of staying in paradise.
- 57:00A beautiful prison is never leaving it.
- 57:02And I thought that was if you could.
- 57:04If I, you know, Tom Brady in a nutshell, for good or for bad, that.
- 57:10That's that beautiful prison, you know, like, I.
- 57:13I just can't believe he's as good as he is on TV right now.
- 57:16After listening to him right out of the shoot, like, it's obvious he's gone right back to the box of yes.
- 57:22Like, he's just so much better than he was in year one.
- 57:25And, you know, I honestly look forward to listening to him.
- 57:28Like, it's just crazy how this guy operates.
- 57:32It is.
- 57:32And, you know, he's had Jim Gray do his buddy broadcaster do a lot of critiques, and he.
- 57:41He has gotten so much better.
- 57:42I was watching him yesterday, too.
- 57:44And by the way, it is really bizarre to write a biography on somebody who's still, like, so vibrant and, you know, right.
- 57:51Not six feet under.
- 57:53Right, right.
- 57:55Like, he's still got more than half of it.
- 57:57I mean, he's got a lot of life to live, and it will be interesting to see what he chooses to do.
- 58:05But how much he has improved since year one is, like, the least surprising thing in the world.
- 58:12Yeah.
- 58:13Yeah.
- 58:13Well, I think he's.
- 58:14Because he's letting it rip.
- 58:15Like, he's, he's calling throws on a, you know, on a line of piss missile and just things that you Know that the things that Romo did at the beginning a little bit, that.
- 58:23That drew us to him before he just decided that he was just gonna.
- 58:27You know, he might have some demons off to the side we don't have to get into.
- 58:31But I just felt like that energy.
- 58:33He's.
- 58:34He's kind of the.
- 58:35The guy in the room that you talk about in the book, you know, that can make a full locker room laugh, you know, that he's becoming.
- 58:42We're seeing that guy.
- 58:44He's not so rehearsed.
- 58:46He's not.
- 58:46So this is what I think a broadcaster is.
- 58:49I'm just.
- 58:49It feels like.
- 58:50It feels like more authentic Tom, even, I think, in the.
- 58:54In the cadence of his voice.
- 58:57It just feels like this is.
- 58:59You're really getting who Tom is.
- 59:01Well, when.
- 59:02When Jane Daniels dislocated his elbow and he went.
- 59:04Oh.
- 59:05And everybody else was saying the same thing.
- 59:07Like, we.
- 59:08We know you're not supposed to say that on tv, but we were all kind of saying it, too, at home.
- 59:13So I really have enjoyed listening to him on the broadcast, but I want to thank you for your time.
- 59:21It was a phenomenal conversation, and the book is phenomenal.
- 59:26I.
- 59:26I can't recommend your books enough.
- 59:28I.
- 59:29I think my favorite book viewers before this was the.
- 59:31The Storm and the Tide.
- 59:32I was very wrapped up in your reporting.
- 59:34I know that was a very personal story for you, so I appreciate you.
- 59:38I can't wait.
- 59:40We're getting on my homes book, so, you know, so I can't wait to have you back on and talk about my homes.
- 59:47Because we're.
- 59:47Like I said, we're from Texas, so Mahomes has been in the fabric for a really long time.
- 59:52Yeah.
- 59:54Yeah.
- 59:55I was like, I went for a run yesterday, and I.
- 59:57I don't run that much anymore.
- 59:59I ran the New York City Marathon, and that about killed me.
- 1:00:01I was like, I'm done with this.
- 1:00:04But I was thinking about, like, what could a subtitle be for Mahomes?
- 1:00:11And it's got to be like, I want to.
- 1:00:13I want to keep it sort of light.
- 1:00:15The Brady one.
- 1:00:17Yeah.
- 1:00:18And An American Story in the Price of Greatness.
- 1:00:23And with Patrick, it's something in the Mystery of Greatness.
- 1:00:28I was trying to come up with, like, a Texas term.
- 1:00:32Right.
- 1:00:32For the subtitle.
- 1:00:33Mahomes blank.
- 1:00:35Blank and the Mystery of Greatness.
- 1:00:37Yeah.
- 1:00:37You can't use gunslinger.
- 1:00:41Pearlman kind of took that with the Farve book, But it would.
- 1:00:45Yeah, it would definitely be something like that.
- 1:00:47Yeah.
- 1:00:48But.
- 1:00:48Yeah, anyway.
- 1:00:49Yeah.
- 1:00:49It's.
- 1:00:49It's very much a Texas story.
- 1:00:52I can't wait.
- 1:00:52Can't wait to read it.
- 1:00:53And I can't wait to.
- 1:00:54To talk to you again.
- 1:00:55So thank you for your time, Lars, and have a great rest of the week.
- 1:00:59All right, you guys, thank you so much.
- 1:01:05Scott just concluded the Lars Anderson interview.
- 1:01:10What a phenomenal conversation.
- 1:01:13I feel like these opportunities to talk to these great authors just keep getting better and better every time.
- 1:01:19Like, I feel like we go into every one of them, like, okay, well,.
- 1:01:23Yeah, I was probably panic at about 10:30 this morning.
- 1:01:28Yeah, I could.
- 1:01:29I mean, not that I could tell you were in a panic, but I could tell, like, you were definitely wanting to be prepared on top of this.
- 1:01:35Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:35And then it's just like sitting down with just a really cool dude every time.
- 1:01:41You know what I mean?
- 1:01:42I'm sure at some point we're gonna come across someone that doesn't.
- 1:01:45It's like he said in the interview, you know, it's the.
- 1:01:48Fidel Castro's just like us, Scott.
- 1:01:51Yeah, it's just another guy.
- 1:01:54He's just another guy.
- 1:01:55And that was the thing of it is, is like there was a twinkle in his eye when he started talking about New York.
- 1:02:01And he did say with some, like, it was wistful, that's what I'm going to use when he said, being in my 20s and being in New York in the 90s was the best time of my life.
- 1:02:12Yeah, like, every day something different had to happen.
- 1:02:17He's working on at the biggest, you know, one of the biggest magazines at the time, you know, with probably an unlimited budget to go travel and interview and cover these events and cut his teeth.
- 1:02:30He's in his early 20s.
- 1:02:32Like, I mean, he absolutely should romanticize that portion of his life because guys like us, like, that's just the dream that would.
- 1:02:42To me, when I was that age, that was the dream.
- 1:02:45I wanted to do what he did.
- 1:02:47The greatest era for sure of sports journalism.
- 1:02:49In my mind, it's like just peak.
- 1:02:51And then, I mean, again, every error has got its thing.
- 1:02:54And even with us, I mean, the interesting thing is everyone has a voice.
- 1:02:57Even Scott and Derek can just buy a microphone and start doing what we're doing.
- 1:03:02But at the same time, I mean, not every era is great, but, man, that was just like this time for in.
- 1:03:08You know, ESPN is very similar, I'm sure, in terms of the stories and stuff, but it is just like peeking.
- 1:03:15And the thing that you brought up several times with me, and you brought it up with him, too, was.
- 1:03:20I just remember every week looking forward to that magazine coming in the mail and then just devouring it.
- 1:03:27But I remember it would come on Thursdays most days.
- 1:03:29And if it didn't come on Thursday, I was mad.
- 1:03:33I was angry.
- 1:03:34Yeah, we probably.
- 1:03:35And then, like, if it didn't show up on Friday, I'm, like, looking at my mom going, you gotta take me down to the post office.
- 1:03:43Yes.
- 1:03:43Like, I know it's down there.
- 1:03:45Talk to somebody.
- 1:03:46Yeah, Yeah, I need to.
- 1:03:47I need one for three bucks.
- 1:03:49But you wanted yours.
- 1:03:51The.
- 1:03:51The COVID story with Hakeem Olajuwon is sitting there waiting for.
- 1:03:55For me.
- 1:03:55And, you know, the thing I really kick myself over.
- 1:03:58I've made some really bad mistakes in my life.
- 1:04:05What.
- 1:04:06What is it about to happen?
- 1:04:08Ones that I think about every once in a while in these interviews have made it even worse was when I just made.
- 1:04:14You know, I kept every one of those sports illustrators forever.
- 1:04:18And they made the move with me from the house I grew up in to when Amy and I got married and moved to Keller.
- 1:04:25They were there.
- 1:04:25And they were literally boxes shaped exactly the eight and a half by 11.
- 1:04:30And you could put about a hundred of them in there.
- 1:04:33Right.
- 1:04:33So you could almost get two years worth in there.
- 1:04:37And I just had stacks of these heavy boxes.
- 1:04:41Yeah.
- 1:04:41And I want to say they even made the move into a storage unit when we moved to Bridgeport.
- 1:04:49And then somewhere in that 2007, 8, 9 range, I decided, this is not worth.
- 1:04:55What am I doing?
- 1:04:57You know, I'm literally having to move boxes and boxes of old sports illustrates.
- 1:05:02And I did go through, and I think I pulled out maybe five or six, maybe 10, I don't know.
- 1:05:08And they are in there.
- 1:05:09And.
- 1:05:10Yeah.
- 1:05:10Some of them that were memorable to me or that were important like Pete or.
- 1:05:15Or.
- 1:05:16Sure.
- 1:05:17Anything related to the.
- 1:05:18The.
- 1:05:18The moments, you know, or whatever.
- 1:05:20But I just wish I still had him because now I kind of want to go back when you pulled that one up and showed it to him.
- 1:05:26It just makes me want to have one in my hand so bad, you know?
- 1:05:30Well, that's the thing is like, it's been sitting here for four months on the desk.
- 1:05:34Yeah.
- 1:05:34And I.
- 1:05:35I continually go back to it.
- 1:05:37I've got it.
- 1:05:38And I'll.
- 1:05:38And I'll read it.
- 1:05:40I'll just read it for five minutes.
- 1:05:42The fact that he knew the lead to that story.
- 1:05:45Yes.
- 1:05:46And it's been 33 years.
- 1:05:4932 years.
- 1:05:50Unbelievable.
- 1:05:51Because he was jealous.
- 1:05:54Like, I couldn't.
- 1:05:55I was Struggling to read the sentence because I was laughing.
- 1:05:58Like, I was just like, how do you.
- 1:06:00He was just like that effing guy.
- 1:06:02I knew that.
- 1:06:03I was so jealous of him.
- 1:06:04Yeah.
- 1:06:04When you gave him the quote about his own quote from the Brady Book about prison, you know, in the paradise that becomes your prison or whatever, I almost said, but I stopped myself because I was like, well, that's,
- 1:06:18like, almost insulting was to say, yeah, you finally got your ship knuck line.
- 1:06:24Yeah.
- 1:06:24Yeah, it's true.
- 1:06:25Like, it took you this long.
- 1:06:26But no, and that's not it.
- 1:06:28I'm sure he's had thousands of similar great lines.
- 1:06:31Yeah, no, he's a phenomenal writer.
- 1:06:33It just.
- 1:06:34I've been reading him for a very long time, and everything he does is worth your time.
- 1:06:38It's just, you know, those guys, like, you know, I didn't want to consistently.
- 1:06:46What's the word I'm looking for?
- 1:06:47Like, I don't want to.
- 1:06:48I don't want to make it the Chris Farley Show.
- 1:06:50Like, I.
- 1:06:51Do you remember writing about Dink Saban?
- 1:06:54That was awesome.
- 1:06:55And dude.
- 1:06:56But, like, literally, the fact that he and Ship Nuk and there's a handful of guys.
- 1:07:00Pearlman, the fact that all those guys came from that factory at the same time is such a gift to the sports fan.
- 1:07:08Like, it's just such a gift to us.
- 1:07:10And I'm.
- 1:07:10I'm so enamored with those guys for.
- 1:07:13For better or for worse, just the work that they've done, the stories they've told, and the fact that they're all just phenomenal riders.
- 1:07:20Like, it's just so much fun getting to talk to them and reminisce.
- 1:07:24I mean, that's the point of.
- 1:07:24The point of our podcast.
- 1:07:26You know, we want to go through these events in the 90s and talk about the things that we remember and the things that.
- 1:07:33That, you know, made us as die hard as we've become.
- 1:07:37And I honestly think that that is what makes us different in these interviews with them and maybe even puts them at ease a little bit.
- 1:07:45Is that.
- 1:07:45Oh, yeah, this bigger picture thing that is, you know.
- 1:07:51Yeah, we want to hear about this book and love it.
- 1:07:54But in the end, also, Brady doesn't have a huge presence in the 90s, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:00But, yeah, no time.
- 1:08:01Yeah.
- 1:08:01That tie back to it and knowing it doesn't, you know, we could talk about whatever, but it's more about him and that, yeah, he got to live through this amazing moment in time.
- 1:08:12And I think.
- 1:08:13I'm sure they Just all love seeing someone that appreciates that, you know, like.
- 1:08:17Yeah.
- 1:08:18You know, they talk to so and so wherever.
- 1:08:20Who was it the New York Times that gave him Gruff or whatever?
- 1:08:23Yeah, the New Yorker.
- 1:08:24I'm really curious as to why, but it.
- 1:08:28You know, the guy he ended up referencing after that, John Bacon is written several books about Michigan football.
- 1:08:34Yeah.
- 1:08:35And he's a phenomenal writer.
- 1:08:36He's very much, very much writes these kind of sprawling, epic books about, you know, a variety of things.
- 1:08:46But I'm real curious.
- 1:08:51I'm real curious as to what.
- 1:08:53Thanks, buddy.
- 1:08:53I'm real curious as to what they had to say.
- 1:08:58I just.
- 1:08:59I.
- 1:09:00I doubt I will agree with their.
- 1:09:02With their criticisms.
- 1:09:03I just felt like you're just.
- 1:09:05You know, those guys have been right for 30 years.
- 1:09:08You just.
- 1:09:08It's like Tim Brown.
- 1:09:10It's like Alan Shipnock.
- 1:09:11They know how to do this blind backwards and forwards, and you can still see that they've still got their fastballs.
- 1:09:19I don't.
- 1:09:20I don't feel like anything's been lost.
- 1:09:22I really wanted to also have Lars give us another 90s moment, because he gave us a moment that is basically 19, the very end of 99, in the beginning of 2000 with Vic, and he gave us 96 moment
- 1:09:37with the Osbornes, which I.
- 1:09:38Yeah, because I was just, like, writing those down.
- 1:09:41Like, hey, we're definitely covering these moments.
- 1:09:43I mean.
- 1:09:43Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 1:09:44Anyways.
- 1:09:45But the Osborne thing is also equally brilliant, I think.
- 1:09:49And I was just like, can we get one from, like, 91, 92, so we can talk to you again pretty soon?
- 1:09:55Well, that was the thing.
- 1:09:56He would have been.
- 1:09:57He's, what, four, three or four years older than us?
- 1:10:01Five years older than me.
- 1:10:02Okay.
- 1:10:03So, like, 71, you know, when he started talking about Vic, and I just had that vision of Vic with the football.
- 1:10:10You know, as Pacino says in any given Sunday, he's holding that thing like a loaf of bread.
- 1:10:14Like, I just had the image immediately of Vic running, and it would.
- 1:10:18To me, it was like.
- 1:10:19I've never seen anybody fly before.
- 1:10:21No.
- 1:10:22Like, he.
- 1:10:22He looked like he was flying when he was in the open field.
- 1:10:26And the way he could.
- 1:10:27The way he could cut and make, you know, tacklers miss.
- 1:10:31Like, he just.
- 1:10:32Every play was electric.
- 1:10:34That game.
- 1:10:35He went into Lambeau and beat far.
- 1:10:37Like, I think it was on.
- 1:10:39It was snowing, I think, at Lambeau.
- 1:10:41Like.
- 1:10:41Yeah, that's one of the greatest things I've ever seen from an athlete, you know?
- 1:10:45Yeah.
- 1:10:45But he.
- 1:10:49Awesome, awesome, awesome time he was.
- 1:10:52And after we got done with the interview and it was just us talking like he was so generous.
- 1:10:57I think we sat there and talked another 10, 12, 15 minutes.
- 1:11:00Yeah.
- 1:11:00And I.
- 1:11:02The book and I mean, I want to make sure like, you know, the thing I would like.
- 1:11:06And he kind of alluded to.
- 1:11:08To it or you did too, a little bit.
- 1:11:10And I almost said it, but I was not a Tom Brady fan before this.
- 1:11:16It's similar to me.
- 1:11:17I look at Brady and Jordan and I wasn't a fan.
- 1:11:20I recognized the greatness and I admire it.
- 1:11:23And it's a great part of the sports history of their sport and everything.
- 1:11:27I finished this book a Tom Brady fan and I know, yeah, again, maybe there was a clamoring for more dirt and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:11:35I don't care.
- 1:11:35I don't need it.
- 1:11:36And everyone's gonna have some skeleton their closet, I'm sure or whatever.
- 1:11:40But I just left it feeling like this is a guy that just understands it, you know, and also values the right things.
- 1:11:50And I don't know.
- 1:11:52He made me a Tom Brady fan.
- 1:11:53That's why I wore my expos Hat.
- 1:11:55So that was the other thing too.
- 1:11:56At one point I said, this is the only thing I have.
- 1:11:58Tom Brady realizing we're on a podcast.
- 1:12:01No one can see him wearing a expose hat.
- 1:12:06Mine's actually sitting over here on the table.
- 1:12:09So I should have run and got it real quick and put it on.
- 1:12:11Yeah.
- 1:12:13Anyway, but I don't know if you noticed this, Lars.
- 1:12:18I mean, immaculately shaved, clean shaven for a home interview on Zoom Scott.
- 1:12:25Yeah, I've never consummate professional through the camera more and touch another man.
- 1:12:29No, we need to not.
- 1:12:32No, we do not need to.
- 1:12:34You admit this out loud.
- 1:12:36It just looks recordings.
- 1:12:39We won't get any more guest, Scott.
- 1:12:44No, he was awesome.
- 1:12:45But you know what makes me think of a clean, freshly shaven face.
- 1:12:49Yeah, I do know what it is.
- 1:12:51Well, tell me.
- 1:12:52Soaps are good.
- 1:12:53That's right.
- 1:12:54Soap dot com.
- 1:12:56You gotta go check them out.
- 1:12:57They've got nothing but great products.
- 1:12:59They.
- 1:12:59They sent Derek and I both a little intro some goodies.
- 1:13:03I am.
- 1:13:04I just officially knocked down the end of the decaf coffee they sent me.
- 1:13:10Oh man, that coffee's so good.
- 1:13:11It is really good.
- 1:13:12I'm.
- 1:13:13I've.
- 1:13:14I'm glad we're talking about it now because I'm being reminded that I need to order some more.
- 1:13:18And I'm also going to snag a few other things.
- 1:13:19The other item I've really liked Derek and I think we've talked about it from them, but it's the shampoo bar, which at first I didn't.
- 1:13:29I didn't get one of those.
- 1:13:31I don't know why, but I really like it and I feel like it kind of lathers up better.
- 1:13:35I was about to say there's a lot of people, though, that do like the shampoo bar.
- 1:13:39Yeah.
- 1:13:39I need to give that a rock and roll, especially since I'm turning.
- 1:13:42I'm turning my pillowcases orange.
- 1:13:45Yes.
- 1:13:46Lots of good stuff there.
- 1:13:47They got lots of shave kits, but just anything you think of in terms of soap, shampoos, conditioners, after shaves, stuff like that.
- 1:13:57And then the, The.
- 1:13:58Like, to me, the hidden gem on their site because it's called Sterling Soaps, but it's the coffee stuff.
- 1:14:03Did you get any coffee when you did yours?
- 1:14:05I didn't.
- 1:14:06I.
- 1:14:08No, because I.
- 1:14:09I got additional, like, I.
- 1:14:12I got additional shaving stuff.
- 1:14:13I asked for the shaving stuff for my.
- 1:14:15To maintain my beard.
- 1:14:18The coffee was great.
- 1:14:19You had it here a couple times.
- 1:14:21They do great work.
- 1:14:21I'm excited to order some more stuff from them and I would encourage everyone to go check them out and thank them for supporting the Sports History Network and.
- 1:14:30And us.
- 1:14:32It.
- 1:14:33They.
- 1:14:33They've been phenomenal, very generous, and I highly, highly endorse their products.
- 1:14:38Yeah.
- 1:14:39So, Scott, we.
- 1:14:41That was.
- 1:14:42We've been looking forward to Lars.
- 1:14:43We're supposed to do Lars interview like, two weeks ago, and I'm super glad that we didn't.
- 1:14:47Yes.
- 1:14:48It worked because we.
- 1:14:49We were only going to get 20 to 30 minutes of his time because he's in such a crunch.
- 1:14:55So to get him at home enjoying Indigenous Peoples Day and.
- 1:15:02Or Columbus Day, where wherever you're.
- 1:15:04Or whichever you support, whoever you side with, Whoever you side with.
- 1:15:10We.
- 1:15:10Thumbs up for both.
- 1:15:13We.
- 1:15:16He basically opened and just said, hey, guys, like, y' all want to rip?
- 1:15:20Let's rip.
- 1:15:21And then he was super complimentary after it was over.
- 1:15:26So that's all we can ask for.
- 1:15:28I feel like if we're going to take an hour of these gentlemen's time or gentlewoman's time, that we need to bring it.
- 1:15:36And I felt like, especially maybe out of all three, we brought it the best this episode.
- 1:15:42Or maybe we're just getting better.
- 1:15:44Yeah.
- 1:15:45We definitely had a little technical breakup on your end just then.
- 1:15:51Oh, did we?
- 1:15:52Yeah, we'll.
- 1:15:52We'll fight through.
- 1:15:53We'll fight through.
- 1:15:54Yeah.
- 1:15:54Can you still hear me?
- 1:15:55I mean.
- 1:15:55Yeah.
- 1:15:56Yeah.
- 1:15:56Now it's back.
- 1:15:57Perfect.
- 1:15:57It was right when you were basically just saying how much.
- 1:16:01How good.
- 1:16:02How good this went.
- 1:16:03Sorry.
- 1:16:04Yeah, I don't want to slap ourselves on the back, but great job by you, buddy.
- 1:16:08Yeah, good job by you as well.
- 1:16:11And now we've got another guest coming up, and just in a couple days, we're going to be talking.
- 1:16:16We're going to.
- 1:16:18Are we ending the podcast after the 90s World Series, was my question to you.
- 1:16:22I feel like this is the height of your Reds fandom.
- 1:16:26This is the podcast.
- 1:16:28Yeah.
- 1:16:28Are we just gonna walk off?
- 1:16:29I feel like we just did our best interview ever.
- 1:16:32No way.
- 1:16:32There's so many more moments coming in the 90s that I have swept that.
- 1:16:37Oakland's diet, that Oakland A's dynasty.
- 1:16:40Scott.
- 1:16:40Like, it's just got to be like, the most giddy you've ever been.
- 1:16:44It's great.
- 1:16:44And it will definitely be probably my favorite one from at least anything we cover from 1990 and.
- 1:16:51But we're gonna have Jeff from the Two Strike Noise podcast join us.
- 1:16:57It was a podcast that I found several months ago, but they do nothing but baseball history, and they really don't contain themselves to any era.
- 1:17:07They go pretty far back and pretty current as well sometimes.
- 1:17:10But we're just.
- 1:17:12Is a big A fan.
- 1:17:13Big A's fan.
- 1:17:14Big A's fan.
- 1:17:15Okay.
- 1:17:15Ricky, favorite player of all time.
- 1:17:17You.
- 1:17:18You.
- 1:17:18You can probably pick any random episode of their 2, 300 and something, and that's gonna come up.
- 1:17:25And I'm just looking forward to kind of hearing it from Oakland guy's perspective.
- 1:17:29When you said that you had invited him on this is who you wanted, I went and started listening to some of their work.
- 1:17:35And at the 334 podcasts, seems real daunting.
- 1:17:40What are we on, like, third?
- 1:17:41We're on like 13.
- 1:17:42I'm like, that's.
- 1:17:43And they're doing one a week.
- 1:17:44They do quality, quality stuff.
- 1:17:47Yeah.
- 1:17:47I go out of order.
- 1:17:48And so I just listened to number 200 a couple days ago.
- 1:17:51Okay.
- 1:17:52And they kind of talk about how they really never even thought they'd make it to a hundred, much less 200, and how it's just become like every week now.
- 1:18:00You know, they just.
- 1:18:00It's part the routine.
- 1:18:03But I don't know.
- 1:18:04It should be fun.
- 1:18:05At the very least, a good.
- 1:18:06A guy that loves talking baseball has a tie to those great Oakland A's teams of the late 80s and early 90s.
- 1:18:14So it should be a lot of fun.
- 1:18:15It's going to be a blast and we hope that you will tune in because we're going to do that first and then we're going to do the reds and the World Series in the, in the second part, right?
- 1:18:26Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:27And.
- 1:18:27And hope.
- 1:18:28And hopefully we're gonna do it with our dear friend Alan who's about to finish up fall golf.
- 1:18:33Yeah.
- 1:18:33And then we're also gonna have.
- 1:18:35Just to kind of wrap up.
- 1:18:37Yeah, we're gonna do it here.
- 1:18:39Here.
- 1:18:39Are we doing a drink?
- 1:18:40Have we decided what we're doing?
- 1:18:41Are we doing a draft?
- 1:18:43Well, that's.
- 1:18:44I think we could have that built in.
- 1:18:46But also remember Alan told us he's got kind of a game trivia for us.
- 1:18:50Yeah, we're gonna do a game.
- 1:18:51We're gonna do bits.
- 1:18:53Yeah.
- 1:18:53People love bits, Scott.
- 1:18:55People love them.
- 1:18:56And, and I mean that'll probably end up being like a seven hour episode.
- 1:19:02I hope so.
- 1:19:02I can't, I can't wait.
- 1:19:06We're gonna have.
- 1:19:06You need to order some calf coffee from Sterling Soap, not decaf calf.
- 1:19:11So we can go for seven hours.
- 1:19:12Half now.
- 1:19:13So what?
- 1:19:14Yeah, just.
- 1:19:16Yeah, pretty much full fledged.
- 1:19:17Like I'm back to where I have a full blown problem again.
- 1:19:20Probably.
- 1:19:20It didn't take very long.
- 1:19:22Oh no, Scott, man.
- 1:19:23I mean you, you just keep drinking it until you feel like you could run through a wall.
- 1:19:28And that amount gets bigger every day.
- 1:19:29That's the problem.
- 1:19:30I don't, I don't know what it is about.
- 1:19:33I don't know if you do this when you go somewhere or you know, whatever.
- 1:19:38Like I always feel like.
- 1:19:40And I think everybody does this or if.
- 1:19:43Or you just blend in.
- 1:19:44Like when we went to New York, I would get up and immediately seek out the closest place where I could just go get coffee and walk around.
- 1:19:53Yeah.
- 1:19:54Like, I don't know if it's an old man signal now.
- 1:19:57And you would just see other old men out with their favorite cups of coffee.
- 1:20:02Yeah.
- 1:20:03Walking around.
- 1:20:05Yeah.
- 1:20:05Like, is it just like our form of being zombies?
- 1:20:08Well, probably that mixed with.
- 1:20:10It's an addictive drug and your body's.
- 1:20:13Yeah.
- 1:20:13It's delicious.
- 1:20:14Let's go.
- 1:20:15Wake up, bro.
- 1:20:16Delicious.
- 1:20:18It is.
- 1:20:18But the fact that you can just like drink it and then like throw it away and then turn and there's four more coffee shops.
- 1:20:25Yes.
- 1:20:25Right there next to you.
- 1:20:26Where you could just reload and then keep going on your way, like, that's so appealing to me.
- 1:20:32And this is going to sound contradictory just after talking about how great the Sterling Soap coffee tastes, but I've always Been of the belief that coffee doesn't taste that good.
- 1:20:41Oh, wow.
- 1:20:42Obviously that your body just starts to say, we want more of that.
- 1:20:48Right, Man, Scott, I don't know, dude.
- 1:20:51You think?
- 1:20:52Give me.
- 1:20:53Give me the coffee.
- 1:20:54Give me heavy whipping cream, and then give me the sugar in the raw.
- 1:20:59Yeah.
- 1:21:00And you're in heaven, and it's just like.
- 1:21:02It's just.
- 1:21:04It is heaven.
- 1:21:05Yeah.
- 1:21:07All right, buddy.
- 1:21:08We will.
- 1:21:09Two days.
- 1:21:11Get this up soon, and then.
- 1:21:12Yeah, let's.
- 1:21:13Let's talk some Oakland A's baseball.
- 1:21:15That's right.
- 1:21:16Looking forward to it.
- 1:21:16But once again, want to thank Lars Anderson for coming along with us again.
- 1:21:20Get the book.
- 1:21:21I listened to a lot of it.
- 1:21:23The audible book version of it is.
- 1:21:26Is good.
- 1:21:26I think there's a little bit of ridicule in some of the reviews you'll see, but in the end, it doesn't matter.
- 1:21:31I mean, the story is outstanding.
- 1:21:33He does a great job with it, and just a.
- 1:21:36A real.
- 1:21:37Real treasure, for sure.
- 1:21:39Yeah.
- 1:21:39Well, I've got his phone number, so he and I are about to become best friends, whether he knows it or not.
- 1:21:44Yeah.
- 1:21:45You're just gonna start sending him, like, random pics.
- 1:21:47Yeah, well, I'm just gonna, like, take selfies.
- 1:21:50I'll just start taking selfies.
- 1:21:52Like, it's.
- 1:21:52Hey.
- 1:21:53Hey, buddy.
- 1:21:54Just enjoying some.
- 1:21:56This is my cousin's son.
- 1:21:57He's a golfer.
- 1:22:01What if I just take his Brady book everywhere and I just set up shop and I'm like, hey, at the Denton Mall today, trying to sell Brady.
- 1:22:09Yes.
- 1:22:11I'm taking a loss.
- 1:22:12I bought copies.
- 1:22:13I'm just sitting up at a table taking a loss.
- 1:22:16Just for you, buddy.
- 1:22:17Gosh, this could be good.
- 1:22:19I feel like it's kind of almost a movie script, you know, like a.
- 1:22:23Like a cable guy type thing or whatever, where you're just gonna become infatuated with them.
- 1:22:27Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:29And he's looking through.
- 1:22:30Looking through the peephole in Birmingham, Alabama, and I just show up with a duffel bag.
- 1:22:38I don't know if sports riders have stalkers.
- 1:22:41I'm curious.
- 1:22:42Might have to go deep diving now.
- 1:22:44You're it, probably right.
- 1:22:46Yeah.
- 1:22:46I don't want to be known as the first sports rider stalker.
- 1:22:51All right, buddy, we'll talk to you soon.
- 1:22:53All right, buddy.
- 1:23:01Sam,.
