- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to the Huddlecast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: I'm Kyle.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: I'm Ryan.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: I'm Matt.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: I'm Mark.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: And Matt has one arm.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: When do you get that arm?
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: The one-armed man.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know yet.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: You didn't do it.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: That's a movie reference to a movie called The Fugitive.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: You wouldn't know that, Mark.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: We're just telling you that that's what that is.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I figured it was a movie reference.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: You said it like it was a so.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: So Matt was in an accident.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Car accident.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: A couple weeks ago.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: You're looking you're looking pretty good.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: Considering the way things went, it could have been a whole lot worse.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Third totaled car since moving to Michigan.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, it is.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: I'm not putting a hodl sticker on my new one because I'm just like a total every every single car I've had.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I've put a hodl sticker on a new one.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: No, a year and a half.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: A year and a half in total three cars.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's pretty wild.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: So and the first one I got hit by someone else, the second one was a deer, and the third one a guy pulled out in front of me.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: So I haven't been like sighted or anything in any of them, so it's like not been my fault.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it it still really sucks.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: This one was the worst, though.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's brutal.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: So and you were supposed to have surgery on my thumbs, but like, yeah.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: That's been postponed indefinitely until we find out if I have to have surgery now on my shoulder.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: So that's a thing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Life is life for you right now.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: It is, yep.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: So what it what what we can learn is that pastors don't have an easier life than anyone else.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: That is true.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but um no, it's I think it's you know, we we talk on Sundays to people all the time, and like we are just as you know, prone to all the other life mishaps as everyone else.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: True.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it's we're just we're just fellow journeyers on the on the way.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: So uh and I think that's sometimes it's it's good for people to recognize, you know.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: It's not good that you've had three car losses to for people to recognize that, but well, I mean, at the same time though, you've said it before too, you know, pastors, whenever things are going well, end up seeing more spiritual warfare as well.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: And I'm not claiming that every single thing that happens to a pastor is spiritual warfare.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Don't hear that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: But there are times where we have seen stuff where it's been things are going great with the church, you know, ministry is growing, the church is growing, and everything in each of our personal lives is just coming off the rails, falling apart, yeah.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So I have a new way I'm gonna deal with that from now on, though.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Um, so I was watching a TikTok video, and a guy went into a haunted hotel and a creepy place is in like pitch black, and he's got his flashlight out, and he's like, Hello, skin crawlers, and he starts playing uh Dolly Partons nine to five and just dancing through the place with his flashlight.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that is hilarious.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So that's how I'm gonna start.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna start singing nine to five.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna do it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: So like anytime I'm stressed, frustrated, feel under attack, nine to five.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: That's just the way I do it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Celebrate some dolly.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: It's really funny.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: But he's dancing and the lights going back and forth.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: And this is the creepiest place you've ever seen.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: But when he's, you know, nine to five is going on, it's just it's hilarious.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: So it's hard to be scared when Dolly's around.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So it's hard to be scared when Dolly Departon is nine to five.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Um, so that that's my new way.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: So whenever you get stressed, frustrated, whatever, scared, Dolly Parton just starts singing and dancing.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: And given your hotel experience in the past, I'm a little bit surprised that it's not one you've already stayed in.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: That's that's true.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: You know, that's interesting.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: I kind of prefer like the um what is it, the uh golden girls theme song.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for the three moments.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Thank you for being a friend, Ryan.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: But just the acoustical version, like with the saxophone.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, so we each got our own we each got our own thing.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: So oh, that's good.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: But uh, that's a different preference for you.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: And so today uh we're talking about preferences, convictions, and imperatives.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: That's what we talked about Sunday.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: We talked about we're in a series called Spiritual Mutts, and we talked about the differences in kind of where we come from that makes us who we are now in the Lord.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: And so we talked about the difference between what the Bible says, what we believe, and then what we like.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And those are very different things, although people often get confused by those things, and they believe what we like is what we believe, and what we like is what God said, and that's not actually the case.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So uh some thoughts on preferences, convictions, and imperatives from uh your you guys.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, I've been in a lot of different churches over the years, and during my time there, there's some people that hold their preferences closer than they hold their Bibles.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Like it is absolutely crazy, some of the things I've seen.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: There was a church I served at once where they needed new Christmas trees.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: And the lady who was the decorating committee, because this was a church that had a committee for everything, and she was the lead of the decorating committee, and she's like, Hey, I'd really appreciate it.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: She's like, if you could maybe try and find it to the ability to go get us some, you know, new Christmas trees for on the stage.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: And I said, Yeah, no problem.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Well, this was in October that she had told me.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: So Black Friday came and I went to Walmart, stood in line for hours, and I got two seven and a half foot tall, nice, you know, big, beautiful Christmas trees.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: And she was over the moon.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Like she could not have been happier that I took the time and the effort and the energy to do that.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Well, another lady came into the church the week after they had been set up and saw that they had colored Christmas lights instead of white Christmas lights.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: She left the church because we had put colored Christmas lights up on the stage instead of white ones on the Christmas tree.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Like that was the the deal breaker for her.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: She, you know, basically stood there and yelled at me, threw her key to the church at me, and walked out.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, that's a preference.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I I'm still trying to repent for that because it's just, yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: But that's where people take their preferences.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: We didn't talk about that Sunday.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Basically, people think if you don't fit their preferences or belief, then you're going to hell because their beliefs and their preferences are what they live by.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And that's not really biblical at all.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: It's God's imperatives are what should drive our lives, direct us.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And so we can have strong beliefs, which we call convictions, based on those imperatives, but those can differ from each other as long as we all agree on the imperatives, and we can have different preferences, the things that we like, don't like, and worship and church and programming and Christmas tree lights.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: But none of that is worth leaving a church over.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Although I would think if you ask any church that is split, they'll tell you that the reason that spl the split happened was some dumb preference-based issue.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: There's never really I've never been to a church where there's been like a theological split.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Now that I'm sure that happens, but it's not the norm of why churches split.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Because you typically you have a board and that governs the theology of the church.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: So you're you should be holding your pastor and your staff accountable to that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: So it's normally somebody gets really mad about something that's a preference thing or a strong conviction thing, and then they go start a new church because they're mad about the Christmas tree lights or the collar of the carpet, or I mean we've had we've had ten years of growth and change, and we instituted a culture of honor here, but like this church has some really strong opinions when I got here and about like the way that you should dress on stage, the way you should you should behave in different ways.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was just like really wow, that's a style of music, like and so a lot of those change have tra those things have changed as we've grown as a church and more uh people have come in from different traditions and we've had to try to learn to compromise more and love each other more fully.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, I wasn't allowed to wear shorts on stage when I first got here.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: That would have been that would have been like, oh, we hate this new guy, he's going to hell.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um he doesn't love the Lord.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: So it would have been a huge thing.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: And even the thing, you know, even over time.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I remember Cody wore sandals one time on stage, and man, I had so many complaints about that the first time he did that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, you see his toes, and that's sinful.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: You shouldn't see his toes on Sundays.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: It's so gross.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: And like Jesus preached in sandals.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jesus washed people's feet, you know.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Like it just you say that to people, and they're like, I don't care, you know.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: So, like, and so it's just like the dumbest stuff.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: And what we really need to focus on the stuff that matters.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Like, um, you know, how do we love people more fully?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: How do we you know, we talk about in our culture of honor, care about what the people who care about care about, and that really is just embrace people's preferences, like understand that you know, I might like something different than you, Matt, and Ryan might like something different, but it doesn't mean we can't love each other and just realize, yeah, he might like that and I might like this, but who cares?
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: It's like football teams.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: I can be friends with people who like different football teams.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to end our friendship.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: But for some people in the world, that is not a thing, you know, it's just not a thing.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So I think when we look at this, i it we have to think about the difference between what our beliefs are, what our likes are, and who Jesus is.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know when I when I think about this on a personal level, I mean I I don't think I have any really strong preferences.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Uh very, very few probably strong preferences.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Like I really don't have that strong of opinion about most things.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I I think that for me, I try to understand Jesus and try to live that way.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: And and and but I do notice people have lots of opinions on things, and it's interesting that Matt talked about it last week in the podcast, and then you preached about it because we have our discipleship, our men's discipleship coming up in a couple weeks, and really that's what the discipleship group is, right?
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: It we take 12 biblical imperatives that most people have like staunch preferences about, and they already have their like preconceived notions and how it is, and and then oftentimes we do this, and then people go, Oh, that's not how I have it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: And it's like okay, well, this is actually the truth, you know, and and it's we have a lot of really awesome, like growing conversations in there.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: So I have a question that might help like people from our church understand how do you draw those lines?
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Because left our own devices, we will draw lines in the most random places in terms of what our imperatives, convictions, and preferences.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: So, how do we like establish what is, what isn't, where it should land?
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Like, what should people do?
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: That's a great question, Mark.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Nicely done.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: We got a really great answer.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Read the Bible.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, I mean, it's it's pretty clear in scripture what our imperatives are.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: When Jesus speaks and says, This is it, this is the way, then that is the way.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's just no when the Bible speaks, we listen, we apply that in our life.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: When it doesn't, and I think you know, Cody said that last week, and it was I put it in the sermon.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: When the Bible is silent, we should be contemplative.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Like we should think, what would the Bible say on this?
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: What premises from Scripture that we could put, you know, oversee on this that would be true?
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Like, how do I look into this?
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: We talked about 1 Corinthians, how we look and see that for Christians all things are lawful, but not all things are helpful or beneficial.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Like, is that lifestyle behavior, is that choice, is that action, is that thought, is it helpful or beneficial?
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And if it's not, then that goes kind of against the you know premise of scripture.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So I think scripture gives us the guidelines, um, and we need to be more open to going back to scripture instead of being just so judgy towards each other all the time.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: And I think the problem is we we we go to our preferences and we go to our convictions and we just we just go after people instead of going after Jesus more.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I I feel like a lot of people like what feels right is what you pursue and what you think is right.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And so if it feels right to me, then of course it's gotta be right, but you've got to measure it to what Jesus actually spoke on, what he taught.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And like I like I like how you say that if it's if it does if the sp if it doesn't say anything, then we have to have grace.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: We ought to have grace.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: If it's not specifically talked about in scripture, like having sandals on stage, like the Bible doesn't talk about that.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: There's nowhere that it specifies how you should lead worship.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's like a thing that you can use uh mercy and grace on.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: So like I think about things like forgiveness, like he taught that as a thing that is essential for our faith.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: So that's the thing as a Christian, I should be like, Oh, I should try and work to forgive.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Like I should listen to Jesus, I should trust him.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So I just know sometimes people hear that and they're like, Well, where does the line get drawn?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Because you'll have people even in Christianity draw different lines in different places somehow.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: The problem is, and I think we all agree, there's people in Christianity that draw their own lines and of convictions and make it and and preach it is imperative.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: The problem is if you're not reading your own word, you don't know the difference.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: And so you have to be in the Bible, you have to be checking things, you have to be checking pastors.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Like people should check all of us.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: They should go home and read, you know.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: If we talk, say it's this is in 1 Corinthians 10, go read 1 Corinthians 10 and check us on it.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Make sure we're right.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Like, that's the only way you're actually gonna know hey, are they preaching me the right thing, or are they just teaching me what their preferences are, what their convictions are, and they're teaching it to me as God's imperative, there's a danger to that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: And like the truth is, we've been in enough churches.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Um we've seen it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: We've seen it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: So, like it happens more more than I I like to admit.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, it happens all the time, and so we have to be really careful, and that's where as pastors, we have to be careful not to put ourselves into the message, we have to put the Bible in the message, and that's that's where you really have to be careful.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: But not everybody does that, and the world, the world's changing so quickly away from Christianity and has been for you know last few hundred years, that we have to be really careful about making sure we stick to the truth of the scriptures and not to the to the reality of culture.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So we don't draw the lines, is where we should be.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: We should let God draw the lines for us.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And we often get selfish enough where we think we know where the line ought to be.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And so people that are Christians or claim to be will claim that this is what I know, this is the truth, this is what it needs to be.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And you go, actually, Jesus said this.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: So you need to shift where you're at, you need to shift your lines, you need to shift your space.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So, because I feel like I have to do that regularly as I'm learning and growing and finding things out.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I think the only hill that we should be willing to die on is one with a cross.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Snaps, snaps.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: There you go, there you go.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, I really I mean if it's if it's not if it's not stated in scripture as this is the line, we shouldn't die on that hill.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: We should we should we should fight for what Jesus tells us to fight for and stand for, and we should not fight for things that are not imperatives of scripture.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, we should just love each other and have grace and mercy and forgiveness for each other.
- 14:00unknown: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: I don't think we have anything to add to that.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I don't either.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I just I I was thinking about that question as somebody who would be listening to the podcast or coming to our church, like, well, what do I do?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: How do I determine it?
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean that I think the one thing that we can honestly say is check us.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Like if you want to know, if you want to know how to bet have a better understanding of biblical imperatives, go listen to the messages, listen to sermons, listen to the podcast, and then go open your Bible and read it.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: You know, make sure we're telling you the right things, make sure, oh yeah, that does align with scripture.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: That's what scripture says.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, do that for every pastor, every message, every TikTok video.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Like, there's some crazy people saying some crazy stuff about Christ and Christianity that I watch the videos, I'm like, that is not right.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And like people are just eating it up online, it's it's trending, and like just because something's viral is doesn't mean it's it's right.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And so what we what what is right is God's word.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So go there.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: That's where you find your training and your education.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: And I think that we're all open to the questions too.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Like if you hear us say something, you're like, I don't think that's right.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Come ask.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Like, we can tell you, like, we're not gonna be, you know, defensive in a way of like we're gonna argue with you about it, but we'll sit down and we'll explain.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Well, this is actually the verse where I got that from.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: This is what it means in the Greek, this is what it means in the whatever, this is how this plays out.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: This is a commentary that I, you know, reference this from.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: We will cite all of the stuff that we've used, all of the stuff that we've studied, and we will do so in a loving, compassionate way.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: We're not gonna look at it as, well, they're just coming in to challenge me.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: We'll look at it as that's a person who wants to know the answer to that question, or they're confused, they don't understand, they want to know what's going on.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: That's what we're here for.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Like, don't just look at something and be like, well, I'm so concerned that the pastors are, you know, they said this wrong or they said that wrong.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: There are times we do misspeak.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Like, I I've I sat in a sermon one time where a pastor talked like th for three or five minutes or so, and he was talking about how Moses this, Moses that, Moses this, and he meant Noah every single time that he said it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I've definitely done that.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's just funny.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: I've definitely messed up Moses and Noah because Moa.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that would be a great kid's book, though, for real.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: That would be.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so I mean we do it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Like we're all we're all prone to it.
