Transcript
- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here.
- 0:02Got to jump on and talk about the big news for the Cardinals
- 0:04today. The Cardinals signing free
- 0:08agent, pitcher, starting pitcher, right-hander, Sonny
- 0:11Gray to a three-year deal for $75 million.
- 0:16What do you guys think about this?
- 0:17This was the guy, I think this offseason that everybody
- 0:22targeted. He just feels like a Saint Louis
- 0:25Cardinal for whatever reason. Well, for a lot of reasons.
- 0:29Age, term of the deal. A guy who probably will fit in
- 0:34well in Saint Louis with the Cardinals.
- 0:36A guy who would want to be here maybe didn't really fit that New
- 0:41York Yankees big city type situation, but really pitched
- 0:46well with the Minnesota Twins, obviously been with the Reds,
- 0:49been with the A's and now your next starting pitcher for the
- 0:53Saint Louis Cardinals. Fair to say your best starting
- 0:55pitcher? I don't.
- 0:57I don't think he's a one. I don't think.
- 1:00Well, is he an ace? I mean look man, he finished
- 1:03second. He finished second in the Cy
- 1:04Young last year. So in saying he's not a one,
- 1:08right when I say that, OK, he's not a one.
- 1:10Well he finished second in the frickin.
- 1:12Cy Young Award last year. Definitely at at minimum a solid
- 1:172. But again it's it's funny when I
- 1:19when I just said that. Oh is he A1?
- 1:22Well, hell, he finished second in the Frickin style Young last
- 1:25year. Let's look at his numbers with
- 1:26the Minnesota Twins. Eight and eight record made, 32
- 1:29starts, 2.79 ERA 184 innings pitched. 183 strikeouts are
- 1:37right there. About 1 strikeout per inning 1/5
- 1:40that led the league 2.83. Here's a good one, especially
- 1:45after they signed Lance Lane who gave up a ton of homers last
- 1:49year. What did Lance Lane give up?
- 1:5044 homers. So Sonny Gray led the league in
- 1:53home runs allowed per nine in terms of the the lowest.
- 1:57So this is a good stat. Only allowed eight home runs
- 2:00last year in 184 innings pitched.
- 2:04So .4 home runs per nine innings.
- 2:09That is Dang good. And again All Star.
- 2:11Second in the Cy Young 18th in the MVP.
- 2:14It's funny because when you say Sonny Gray to me, do I think, oh
- 2:17is he an ace? Is he A1?
- 2:19Well, hell again. I've repeated myself 15 times,
- 2:22but when you finished second in the Cy Young, I mean, hell, you
- 2:25got to be an ace. Or damn close to a one, at least
- 2:28for this for this past year. So let's go ahead and look at
- 2:31Sonny Gray. Overall, he's 34 years old, just
- 2:35turned 34 earlier this month and 11 years in the big leagues.
- 2:41Career record 98 and 85. Three .47.
- 2:44Career ERA 15171. Career innings 15121 career
- 2:50strikeouts, so again, almost one per innings pitched and had his
- 2:56best best years the last couple with the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:59By far 2.90 ERA with the Twins over over two seasons only
- 3:05through 119 2/3 innings last year.
- 3:09This is 2022. I'm saying in in 24 starts, but
- 3:13if you look back, go back to. I mean, early in his career he
- 3:16made 33 starts with the A's, 31 starts with the AS30, Let's see,
- 3:2231 starts with the Reds in 2019 and you have the COVID year the
- 3:26last three seasons. He's made 2624 and 32 starts the
- 3:31last three years. And now you got that AARP
- 3:35pitching staff for the Cardinals.
- 3:38He's a, he's a young guy at 34 years old.
- 3:42You got you got Lance Lynn 36, you got Cal Gibson 36.
- 3:47I was looking this up earlier today what is is Miles Michaelis
- 3:4935 I believe double check me on that I think I'm right Steven
- 3:54Mats I believe 32 about to turn 33 next season so.
- 4:00So there you go Michaelis, Matt I mean everybody's everybody's
- 4:05mid, mid 30s. I'm not going to say 36 is is
- 4:09late 30s yet once you get to 37 don't you think that's fair to
- 4:12say you're you're late 30s. But I want to hear from you
- 4:16guys. Please comment like subscribe.
- 4:18What do you think of this of this deal and and all winter
- 4:23long or all offseason long it seemed like Sonny Gray was
- 4:26always going to be the guy the Cardinals went for.
- 4:30And and I've thought that the key to the Cardinals rebuilding
- 4:33their their starting pitching was basically adding Gray,
- 4:39adding that trade guy and then adding that third pitcher who
- 4:45you thought was somebody like Lance Lynn or Michael Waka or
- 4:48Kyle Gibson. But they end up getting two of
- 4:50those guys. So I think this is super
- 4:52interesting because you would think on paper the Cardinals may
- 4:57be done OK, they got the three. And some people are probably a
- 5:01little disappointed thinking like I did that you needed two
- 5:04pitchers better than Miles Michaels right now.
- 5:06I think it's fair to say that you got one in Sonny Grey.
- 5:08I don't know how you want to slot this, you guys, but I would
- 5:11probably go Grey right now. Michaelis And then if you wanted
- 5:17to go Gibson Matts Lynn, I I don't know.
- 5:21I'm not going to, I'm not going to get mad about how you slap
- 5:23345. I think it's fair to say on
- 5:25paper that Sonny Grazer won and Miles Miles Michaelis is your
- 5:31two and then whatever you look at the 345.
- 5:32But this, this I find very interesting because I thought
- 5:35all along the Cardinals would try to add a starting pitcher
- 5:39via trade. We'll see if they do.
- 5:42If not, you can still trade a Dylan Carlson, a Tyler O'Neill,
- 5:44Alec Carlson, whoever, whoever you want to move of this glut of
- 5:48outfielders that you also have to sort out.
- 5:50You could get a reliever or a couple relievers in return.
- 5:53Or maybe you're still out there in the starting pitching market
- 5:57for somebody like a Dylan Cease, for somebody like Alec Manoa.
- 6:01We've heard about Logan Gilbert. The name Tyler Glass now is
- 6:05thrown out there a lot with a raise.
- 6:07So this is from Michael Marino of Marino MLB on Twitter.
- 6:12He's a national MLB reporter and he tweets out earlier today,
- 6:1611:00, he says, sources tell. And this other guy is Jack
- 6:21Azalea Heron. He's a freelance MLB reporter
- 6:25from New York. He manages a site called MLB
- 6:28Nerds. OK, so anyway, this Michael
- 6:31Marino says sources tell Jack Azalea Heron and myself that the
- 6:36Cardinals have made teams interested and adding starting
- 6:41pitching, aware that left-handed pitcher Steven Mats is available
- 6:44via trade. Matt signed a four year, $44
- 6:47million contract with Saint Louis before the 2022 season.
- 6:51So that's from Michael Marino and then this gentleman Jack
- 6:54Azulay Heron, and I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that
- 6:57correctly, but so he says. Also, the Cardinals have been
- 7:00aggressively shopped. He meant to say shopping.
- 7:03So the Cardinals have been aggressively shopping
- 7:06left-handed pitcher Stephen Mats.
- 7:08Sources tell MLB nerds and Marino MLB Mats recently signed
- 7:12the four year, $44 million deal prior to the 2022 season.
- 7:16Very, very interesting. Because look, you can say what
- 7:20you want about Stephen Mats, but when you see what the Cardinals
- 7:24signed Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson for, we're talking one
- 7:28year deals for what, 10-12 million with the buyout, With
- 7:32the option, whatever it is. So $23 million combined.
- 7:36Think about it. Steven Matz with two years left
- 7:38on his deal on a four year, $44 million deal.
- 7:42So we're talking 11,000,000 Aavi.
- 7:44Don't know exactly how that contract plays out, but let's
- 7:46just say $11 million on average. That's a pretty fair deal for
- 7:50Steven Matz. So if you got other guys who are
- 7:53trying to sign pitchers like Lancelin trying to sign pitchers
- 7:56like Michael Walker, trying to sign pitchers like Kyle Gibson,
- 8:00A2 year deal for Steven Matz is not a bad contract that could be
- 8:04attractive to other teams. Especially if you're trying to
- 8:08let's say trade a a younger pitcher that you don't think you
- 8:12can sign long term but get some stability in return for the next
- 8:15couple years in a guy like Steven Matz.
- 8:17So this I think is what's really interesting not only about the
- 8:21Sonny Grey signing, because when Sonny Grey gets signed, maybe
- 8:25you think OK, they're done and and maybe they are, But it it
- 8:29would make sense if the Cardinals are shopping Stephen
- 8:31Matz, if they feel like, hey, we have enough back end of the
- 8:36rotation type pieces with with Matt's, with Lynn and with Kyle
- 8:43Gibson. And if the Cardinals like most
- 8:45of us think they need more upside, more more front end
- 8:49rotation help, it would make a lot of sense to move somebody
- 8:52like Stephen Matz. And I guess it doesn't have to
- 8:55be necessarily in the same deal, right?
- 8:58You can move Mats. They still need relievers, but
- 9:01if they were to trade for one of the guys I mentioned and and
- 9:04whoever is in that bucket, Logan Gilbert, Dylan Cease, Tyler
- 9:08Glass now and somebody like Alec Mignoa would probably cost less
- 9:13but still has tremendous upside. Mignoa had a really good season
- 9:16two years ago. Dylan Cease also had a rough
- 9:19year ERA wise, but he was unbelievable two seasons ago as
- 9:23well. He's not going to come cheap,
- 9:26but the point is more so Just because the Cardinals have have
- 9:30acquired 3 pictures all via free agency, it doesn't seem like
- 9:34they're done at least seeing what else is out there.
- 9:38Because it would make a lot of sense to move somebody like
- 9:40Matt's and then try to add somebody you think is better to
- 9:43slot at the top of the rotation. If you want to have Sonny Gray
- 9:47one and then whoever we're talking about ceased glass now
- 9:492. Doesn't that make the whole
- 9:51starting rotation feel a whole lot better?
- 9:53If Miles Michaels says you're 3 and then again Kyle Gibson Lance
- 9:57Lynn or reverse those guys I don't really care as as the back
- 10:00end of your starting rotation. So I think though that it just
- 10:05always felt like Sonny Gray was going to be a Saint Louis
- 10:08Cardinal age a guy who's pitched in the central before a shorter
- 10:14deal. Now you know before the winter
- 10:17really started in terms when I say winter, I mean the offseason
- 10:21and and I was looking at different publications
- 10:23predicting contracts and so everything is more than than
- 10:28what a lot of people thought which usually is the case.
- 10:31I I do think that once Aaron Nola got what what did he get
- 10:37seven years, 172 million so we're talking 24 and a half
- 10:40million. You know I don't think the AAV
- 10:44really shocked anybody. It was more to me the years.
- 10:48So once they they signed him and paid him, the Phillies did till
- 10:52he's age 37. I started to think, well hell
- 10:54maybe Sonny Grey gets a four year deal.
- 10:57And if you were thinking earlier that Sonny Grey gets a
- 10:59three-year deal for 60, well now the price of poker is going up
- 11:02and I was reading different, you know, people who cover the sport
- 11:05and think oh maybe maybe now Sonny Grey's a four year deal
- 11:08for 90 million which which makes sense because it's in
- 11:11essentially the same ballpark as what the Cardinals get them.
- 11:13They go three years and they go 75,000,000.
- 11:17So the AAV obviously a nice clean easy 25,000,000 if he did
- 11:21got four years and and and this is this is probably the best
- 11:25offer I'm guessing but you know if another team would have
- 11:28pushed it to four years and and 85,000,000 would they have
- 11:32pushed it to to 90 million which makes the AAV more like 22 1/2
- 11:36but he gets more money in total I think three years and $75
- 11:42million is a nice fair contract for both parties and the
- 11:48Cardinals have a little stability there beyond 2024.
- 11:53I know that Lynn and Kyle Gibson have options but Sonny Gray now
- 11:56you haven't for three seasons. I I think this is going to be a
- 11:59really really nice contract for the Cardinals.
- 12:02I I don't think it's going to be a bust by any means.
- 12:04You you can never really predict health but I think he's a pretty
- 12:08solid dependable pitcher front end guy.
- 12:12If he was your #2 starter in the play offs, I think you feel
- 12:15pretty Dang good about that. A guy with this sweeper pitch
- 12:19that has kind of taken over baseball the last couple years
- 12:23and and he's he's been a master of that pitch.
- 12:25We had Matt Holiday on the radio show Hot Take Central 590 The
- 12:28Fan earlier today and he was a team mate with Sonny Grey with
- 12:32the Yankees and said he's just this really, you know, good
- 12:34dude, small town guy. Tennessee went to Vanderbilt,
- 12:39but just kind of a guy who maybe doesn't love the limelight and I
- 12:42was thinking about that myself. Sonny Grey's been in the big
- 12:44leagues for 11 seasons and I feel like I've never seen him do
- 12:46an interview. Although I think, as I say that
- 12:51I think I may have talked to him at an All Star game years ago,
- 12:55years ago when he's with the A's.
- 12:56I got to cover a bunch of these All Star games that were kind of
- 12:59close by. There's one in Minnesota you can
- 13:02drive to. There's one in Kansas City.
- 13:04I got to cover one in Cleveland, so I don't remember the year.
- 13:06I think I may have talked to Sonny Gray years ago at one of
- 13:10those media availabilities, but that's just goes to show you I
- 13:12can't. I can't even remember.
- 13:13So he's just one of those quiet soft spoken guys, likes to
- 13:16pitch, likes to play baseball, doesn't like to do all the all
- 13:20the all the extra stuff which I think fits in really well with
- 13:24the Saint Louis Cardinals And we always joke about that like oh,
- 13:26he feels like a cardinal. It's usually a boring guy who's
- 13:28in his mid 30s, the family man. Well look, sometimes sometimes
- 13:32the slipper fits and that is the case with Sonny Grey.
- 13:35So I don't want to make this one super long.
- 13:38We're going to have tons more content today on this.
- 13:41We already posted the video of Matt Holiday talking about Sonny
- 13:43Grey later in the day. I'm sure everybody on 590, the
- 13:46fans going to have great analysis of the Sonny Gray
- 13:49signing. I just want to jump on.
- 13:52I know you guys like video. I can tell by the numbers that
- 13:54you love the video segments way more than the audio segments.
- 13:57Sometimes I'm just busy, but when there's big news like this,
- 14:00I want to jump on and jump in front of the camera so you can
- 14:04see my my beautiful face. By the way, I shaved on accident
- 14:09with a family picture and I want to change the batteries of my
- 14:13electric razor. And I actually took the guard
- 14:16off by accident. And I started shaving my face
- 14:18and I realized it was basically just totally shaving it.
- 14:20And at that point, I had to just keep going and do a a total
- 14:23shave, which I haven't done in a long time.
- 14:25And my wife's mad about it because she prefers me with a
- 14:27beard, but it'll grow back. It's all good.
- 14:29All right. Anyway, hopefully.
- 14:31You guys had a great, great Thanksgiving.

- 16:03that. OK, All right.
