2:53
all heard about the issues with foster care in West Virginia, and not to
2:58
be too metal dramatic, but the way we take care of West Virginia's most
3:02
vulnerable kids, let's just say, sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.
3:07
As you well know, if you listen to this station, you read the
3:10
paper, watch TV Rachel Kinder is the program director for the nonprofit non governmental
3:16
agency called Mission West Virginia, and she joins us now. Rachel, good
3:21
morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning, Thank you for having me,
3:23
Thank you for being here so much in the news. As I said
3:27
earlier about the crisis, and make no mistake about it, we do have
3:30
a crisis in West Virginia when it comes to foster care. First of all,
3:35
how exactly did we get here, Well, there's a lot of different
3:39
How much time do you have? That's a great way to put it.
3:44
Definitely, the opioid crisis in West Virginia has affected the number of children in
3:47
foster care. Poverty becomes a factor. There are a lot of different reasons
3:51
that children enter foster care in West Virginia. Right now, we have over
3:54
six thousand children in care, which is actually down because we have been over
3:59
seven thousand in the past. So how did it go down by a thousand?
4:02
Well, there are some programs where we are trying to keep children in
4:05
their home of origin rather than removing them, offering services to families. I
4:10
do hope that that is having an impact. I want to ask kind of
4:15
a stupid question. You mentioned the opioid crisis that we have. But other
4:19
than and that's I'm sure the most obvious, but what are some other reasons
4:23
why kids would find themselves in foster care? The main reasons that children enter
4:27
foster care are straight out abuse and neglect. We try to remind the public
4:31
of that because sometimes they think that children are juvenile delinquents or entering foster care
4:35
because of fault of their own, But it is parental abuse or neglect or
4:40
caregiver abuse or neglect is why kids enter care. Target again to Rachel Kender
4:44
about foster care in West Virginia. So I understand there is now a collaborative
4:47
effort between your group, Mission West Virginia along with the West Virginia Department of
4:51
Human Services and at a Better Health West Virginia along with I think of like
4:57
ten other foster care agencies to try to get a handle on this. Yeah,
5:00
that's correct. So Mission West Virginia has been engaged in foster parent recruitment
5:03
for over two decades, but this is the first time we've had the opportunity
5:06
for a statewide collaborative effort, and that came to be because at in a
5:12
Better Health of West Virginia wanted to do something to benefit children in foster care,
5:15
and this was what was suggested by the foster care agencies as something that
5:19
we needed was a collaborative statewide message. So I'm assuming by this, and
5:24
you can correct me if I'm wrong. I would I would presume that you're
5:27
talking about maybe getting getting together with these different groups, almost like a database
5:30
or something where you could all sort of work together in this recruitment process.
5:35
Well, Mission West Virginia, I'm kind of that database. Are the database?
5:40
Yes, So we're the response team. So we are a neutral agency.
5:44
We don't certify families. There are ten private agencies in West Virginia,
5:47
private foster care agencies. They do the certification. What Mission West Virginia does
5:51
is we are the first step. We hope that families reach out to us
5:55
first, and then we can refer them to an agency, to all of
5:58
the agencies that serve their particular county. So if they reach out to you,
6:01
if I decide I want to be a foster family, and I pick
6:05
up the phone, I call it, what exactly is the process like?
6:09
So you would talk to my coworker Sonny generally sometimes me mostly Sonny and she
6:14
would answer any questions that you might have, and she would send you a
6:16
list of the agencies that serve your particular county, because the ten agencies each
6:20
serve different parts of the states. And what would some of the questions be,
6:24
what would you be looking for? Well, people ask us questions,
6:28
so they ask us, can you be single? Can you be divorced?
6:30
So I would come to you basically, probably with more questions. In other
6:33
words, right, I'd say my wife, I'd say my wife and I
6:35
are interested in becoming foster parents. Can will you look at And I'm just
6:41
trying to think if we did that personally, some questions I would ask,
6:44
you, know, we're an older couple, I mean, can it be
6:46
a certain age, or or what are the requirements for where we live?
6:49
Or what if? That's the sort of things that you would questions you would
6:51
get. Right, We answer questions more than we ask questions. Right,
6:56
Yeah, it makes sense. So you have to be over the age of
6:59
eighteen. And we love empty nesters and older couples because sometimes people have raised
7:02
their kids and they're not done, so they're ready to help out with more
7:05
kids. People ask us questions about whether you can own a rent and you
7:10
can do either. They ask us questions about whether foster children have to have
7:13
their own bedroom and they do not things like that. Okay, again we're
7:16
talking with we're talking about foster care here with Rachel Kinder, the Dave Aland
7:21

7:44
Baseball dot com. I want to compare as best in the information that you
7:47
have. Let's compare West Virginia to other states. Are we better off when
7:53
it comes to foster care in these services? Are we worse off? Are
7:56
we about the same? Is it something? Is it compared apples the orange?
8:00
Talk about comparisons, I would say apples to oranges anytime I try to
8:03
compare us. I look for other states with rural populations, because you can't
8:05
compare us to bigger states or states with different populations. One of the things
8:11
that West Virginia is great about is over fifty percent of our children in foster
8:16
care are placed with kinship or relative families, and we really are one of
8:20
the top states in the country for doing that. And that's so much better
8:24
if kids can go to grandma versus going to foster care with strangers, that's
8:28
always the best option. And we love family in West Virginia too. You
8:31
love family in rural America in general. On me, it's part of our
8:35
culture that we take care of kids in our families. So I think that
8:37
that's a huge strength of West Virginia is that we really do place with relative
8:41
and kinship when we can. So, where did the idea for this big
8:45
collaborative effort excuse me come from? For all you guys working together? Yeah,
8:48
so ATNA Better Health had some funds and they said what would be helpful,
8:52
and the foster care agency said, we could really use a statewide campaign
8:54
because not a lot of the agencies have recruitment dollars. And obviously it works
9:00
better when you can put them all in one pot. So we had a
9:03
professional ad agency that's eighty four agency based here in Charleston, and they designed
9:07
a campaign for us, and they did a great job. They did a
9:09
lot of background research and it's really an effective informative campaign. And I would
9:15
imagine too that as somebody who's been in marketing for a long time, I
9:18
would imagine that the messaging is very important on on these sorts of ad campaigns,
9:22
right saying the right things. Yeah, exactly, we don't want pictures
9:26
of crying children. We don't want the messaging to be We're in a crisis
9:30
and it's overwhelming because who wants to jump in and help that. We want
9:33
to talk about the urgency, but we want people to know that the average
9:37
West Virginia family can and should step up to do this. Where can people
9:43
learn more about this effort or what you were trying to do. If people
9:46
are listening to us and they say, well, this is something I'm interested
9:50
in, because I would imagine that there are in correct me if I'm wrong
9:52
again, that there are ways that people can help out other than just becoming
9:56
foster parents. I mean, you need resources, you need support, things
9:58
that nature. Where can people learn more? Well, First to see the
10:01
campaign, you can go to we FOSTERWV dot org and that's a great place
10:05
to see all the campaign materials and there are multiple ways that you can inquire.
10:09
Other ways that families can help out if they can't be foster parents is
10:13
to help spread the messaging. Even just sharing a Facebook post, even sharing
10:18
a piece of the campaign is always helpful to spread the word. And I'm
10:20
going to leave you with the last word, Rachel, what message would you
10:26
like to leave the people of West Virginia about getting involved in things like this
10:31
and what your agency does. I'll give you what I do with my political
10:33
candidates. I say, I do a thing called the Final thirty where I'll
10:37
let you just talk so sell us on this and just leave the folks with
10:41
the Vinyl message. I would just say that I know that lots of people
10:43
have considered being foster parents, and there's no commitment to just inquiring through the
10:48
campaign. You can talk to me, you can talk to my coworkers and
10:52
we'll answer your questions and we would just encourage you to get information and explore
10:56
it a little bit. There are lots of different family types that might be
11:00
just right for waiting kids, all right. Rachel Kender is the program director
11:03
for foster care Recruitment in West Virginia for Mission West Virginia. I appreciate you
11:07
being here. We'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Thanks so much.

Doctor Settle, good morning, welcome to the show. Thanks Dave, thanks

for having me on, Thanks for coming back. Yeah, I appreciate it.
15:09
You folks have been doing a lot of work at your place on Washington
15:11
Street East, and the project is finally finally coming in fruition here. There's
15:16
going to be a grand opening on the east end of the new Easton building
15:22
or expansion. I guess I should say it's Wednesday at three o'clock, so
15:26
exactly what do you got going on there all day? So he love when
15:31
the conversations start with old days. So since twenty and twenty one, we
15:35
have really needed to expand West Virginia Health Right. Of course, it's been
15:39
a huge labor of love when I became. I've been at Health Right since
15:43
nineteen ninety seven, but since I took over CEO ten years, it got
15:48
to be ten years ago July first. We time flies by it, I
15:52
know it does when you're having all kinds of fun. So we had fifteen
15:54
thousand patients then and we now have forty four four hundred patients and we're serving
16:00
them out of that same how many forty four thousand, forty fourth five four
16:04
hundred patients. And that is through all of our programs, be it through
16:10
the East End Clinic, the West Side Clinic, the one at Covenant House,
16:12
our mobile dental clinic, which I don't know if a lot of people
16:15
know about. It's the mobile dental clinic that's going into its eighth year that
16:21
travels to five counties of our state that goes to McDowell, Logan, Boone,
16:25
Runing, Clay Counties and seize people three hundred and sixty five days a
16:29
year. Albit, we do give people weekends and the holidays off, but
16:33
and mobile medical clinic as well. So a lot of outreach services. I
16:37
mean, gosh, during COVID we became the number one testing COVID, so
16:41
we tested over one hundred thousand people in our drive throughs. But long story
16:45
short, nothing's wrong with me. I mean nothing short me. We've seen
16:48
all those people and all these years and it's grown. And so since twenty
16:52
twenty one, we've known that we've needed to expand to be able to treat
16:56
more people, to be able to see more people, we have had staff
16:59
on top of staff, sharing offices, six people in an office. So
17:03
finally, after all of these years and fundraising and fundraising and grant writing and
17:08
all of that and planning, we finally are going to finish that. We
17:14
finished it, and we'll have a grand opening and it'll be a doubling of
17:17
the space. Basically, it's fifteen thousand square feet of the old space.
17:21
We're adding another like sixteen thousand square feet and then remodeling the old space.
17:26
And it's all about patient care. I mean, we've got expanded treatment areas,
17:30
ten new exam rooms, additional vision area with the waiting room, expanded
17:36
dental space with a lab, a brand new regular laboratory. The whole entire
17:41
old wing that we housed the entire clinic in is now going to be a
17:45
behavioral health and a recovery center. So we do a lot of behavioral health,
17:49
a lot of behavioral health issues that happened you know, post COVID during
17:53
COVID, a lot of people in recovery that we're helping. And then all
17:57
of the medical especialty area is going into the the new space. And then
18:02
there's an area on the second floor for expanded area of like future space,
18:06
which we didn't have in the old clinic. We used every square inch of
18:08
it, so a little bit of future expansion space that we don't have any
18:12
designated areas in there, because you know it's going to happen. I mean,
18:15
that's basically going to happen. But what I really want to talk about
18:19
too, a lot of people don't know this, which are you know people.
18:22
One thing I want people to understand is, you know, they see
18:26
that building and they go, oh, you know health right, Well,
18:27
this is all money earmarked for this project. Specific to this project. We
18:33
got four hundred million or four hundred million, four million from the federal government
18:37
and an earmark specific for this building. We got four million else not be
18:41
used for anything. It's four million from the state to match that that had
18:45
to be specific to this project. We got a million through the county,
18:48
a million through the city, all through this ARP funding, so that's ten
18:51
million there. It's a twelve million dollar project. All in the rest of
18:55
it, we wrote grants and fundraising and you know, did everything. But
18:59
I didn't do I didn't bake cookies. I thought about it to put it
19:02
into this building. And we're very grateful because at the end of the day,
19:07
we're going in. It's going to be totally paid for, no loans
19:11
or anything. But it's specific to this, to this project. But the
19:14
programs that we run every year, it's an eight million dollar budget to do
19:18
what we do. When I took over, it was two point two million
19:21
dollars. That's not anything we've been dying to grow on, Dave. I
19:25
mean, it's its need. I mean, you will go from treating fifteen
19:27
thousand people to almost forty five thousand people with all the need. And you
19:32
know, I had somebody tell me the other day, and I'm not going
19:33
to stay who, but I had somebody talent, we're friends. Well,
19:37
I'm not going to tell you that somebody'd said, you know, hey,
19:41
maybe you need to start telling people. Know, you need to learn to
19:44
start telling people, know, Angie, because I'm you know, it's a
19:47
struggle every year to meet budget. I sweated out every year trying to meet
19:49
budget because a lot of the funding sources that we get are the same as
19:53
they were then. And so you know, I'm driving my staff forward.
19:56
Let's write more grants, let's ask for more money. But you know,
20:00
I'm said, you know, who, which one of you wants to come
20:03
down and sit at my front desk and tell the little lady that works at
20:07
Walmart. It's getting up every day every day, put one foot in front
20:11
of the ever to go to work at Walmart, bring home, put food
20:15
on the table, try to pay your utility bills. But she can't pay
20:17
that four hundred dollars in lun and that three hundred dollars blood pressure medicine that
20:21
we give her for free. And by giving her that for free, that
20:25
lady's able to still continue working, working her job, going every day without
20:30
health right to do that for that lady. The only choice that she has
20:34
and thousands of other people like her, are to quit their jobs, get
20:38
poor enough to qualify for medicaid, and be on public assistance to get there.
20:42
It's a screwed up system. It's a screwed up system. I mean,
20:45
really it is. I was having a discussion a couple of days ago
20:48
with a business owner friend of mine who was he's a small business owner,
20:55
and he said, I am struggling to get people now to family owned business,
21:00
very very small business, he said, because people have to choose between
21:04
whether they want to work, which is part of our culture here in West
21:07
Virginia is to work or they have to choose. Okay, if I continue
21:12
to work, I'm not going to be able to pay my blood pressure medication.
21:15
I like to go to pay. That's something that's changed so much about
21:18
health rate. Old school health rate was, you know, we only saw
21:22
the uninsured. It was way back when a lot of people. We do
21:23
see people that are in shelter. We do help people, but the bulk,
21:26
eighty three percent of our patients work, they're gainfully employed. We still
21:30
see people that are very poor and have Medicaid. There's lots of things that
21:33
we do for people that Medicaid doesn't cover, and that's also part of the
21:37
struggle. There's no reimbursement for that. We do build Medicaid and Medicare for
21:41
what they'll pay for for the patients. We don't build patients. We don't
21:44
have sliding fees. We never charge patients for anything, but a lot of
21:47
stuff that we do, like dental and vision and things are not covered.
21:51
So it's things that we do for them that's not that's paid for. But
21:52
the bulk, the huge portion of our patients, fifty five percent of our
21:56
patients are uninsured, working poor, and that means. These are people that
22:03
get up every day and they work, but they don't have the means to
22:07
pay for health insurance, or if their employer offers it, it's too high
22:11
or it's catastrophic care with a huge deductible. Even if they get help through
22:15
the marketplace and all that to where they're carrying around a card, but it's
22:18
not going to do them any good unless they have a car accident or open
22:22
heart surgery. So the day to day medicines, the insulins, the blood
22:26
pressure peels, the cholesterol medicines, the caeser medicines that we know from health
22:32
rate. Because we have to purchase those, that's where a huge portion of
22:34
our budget goes. We don't get any perks, we don't get any special
22:38
drug pricing three fourty be drug pricing. We have to pay retail pricing.
22:41
So we have to make decisions every day when these people come in and my
22:45
pharmacy person comes to me and says, Angie, this lady needs help.
22:48
If we buy this drug, it's going to be two hundred and twenty dollars
22:51
a month just for her. What are we going to do and what am
22:55
I going to say? I'm going to say, bite, she's got to
22:56
have that medicine because with out it us, without standing in that gap,
23:00
Dave. People do not understand fifty percent of forty four thousand patients are suddenly
23:07
without health care and they will all become unemployed. They will then be on
23:11
Medicaid, they will all be on the state. In terms of control,
23:17
we also have these huge relationships with like W. Thomas CAMC where they trust
23:23
us, where we get proof of their income, I get proof of their
23:26
whole house at M can we get their attax returns. We get all of
23:30
this stuff Dave, to prove that they're actually in financial need of help.
23:36
And then the drug companies will help sometimes give us free meds and other things.
23:40
But CMC then they write the cost off of every er visit, every
23:45
in patient's day, every lab, every surgery. The radiologists write off the
23:49
cost, d anastesiologists write off the costs, and our volunteer specialists do these
23:55
major orthopedic surgeries and need replacements and everything for these patients totally charge because they're
24:00
health rate patients, because they trust us, because we've proven that we do
24:03
what we say we're going to do. And then those patients get that for
24:07
free. The other thing is is if those patients that are uninsured, they
24:10
if that suddenly falls through, all of that stuff suddenly becomes part of the
24:14
bill to mediciate to the state. So this is a huge We provide over
24:18
twenty five million dollars worth of free care every year to our patients every year.
24:25
Talking with Antie Suttle of Health Right the Dave Island showing five any line
24:27
is brought to you a part by Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law
24:30
firm, and you talked about the reimbursement for Medicare Medicaid that's not always the
24:34
easiest thing in the world to get. Nope, it's not because I have
24:38
a lot of friends in the healthcare field that spend a lot of nights up
24:42
trying to figure out how to get them, how to get their money.
24:45
What health rates sees, we see uninsured Medicaid, Medicare, and every patient
24:51
has to be under two hundred and fifty percent federal poverty level. And purposely,
24:55
you know, you never meet anybody in private practices. I've worked private
24:57
practice that can serve that you cannot survive on that because generally private practices will
25:03
take the you know, three percent Medicare or three percent Medicaid, and then
25:06
they really base it on the private insurances to boaster their practice. So that's
25:11
why we're so dependent. We're so dependent on grants, fundraising, donations and
25:18
all of that. You know. I've had even foundations will give us a
25:21
grant and say, well, their classic thing is, well, how do
25:22
you plan on sustaining this program. I'm like, there's no way to sustain
25:26
this program without more grants in fundraising, because when you're taking care of low
25:32
income people can't afford health care and you can't charge them. The only way,
25:37
the only way, and it's not through reimbursement, is through funding grants,
25:42
et cetera. And were we work hard at that. I mean,
25:45
we we write over fifty grants a year to sustain what we've done, and
25:49
we're almost you know, sometimes I tell people, you know, it's like
25:52
we're a victim of our own success. And I don't mean that in a
25:56
boastful way. I mean we've worked so hard to do so much every year
26:00
here and have been successful at keeping that operation going and growing it that a
26:03
lot of times people just assume, you know, we'll figure it out on
26:07
their own, which we you know, I spent a lot of nights trying
26:08
to figure out earlier, trying to figure these things out. I love the
26:12
state, and I love the people here, and I believe in it.
26:15
I'm a proud Appalachian. I know how hard West Virginians work. I'm committed
26:19
every day, and so are the people that work with me, that get
26:22
up every day and go to work, and we put our minds together to
26:25
try to make it happen for people because we know we're doing the right thing.
26:27
I know where those dollars are spent, I know where the money goes.
26:32
I know the stories of the people. I carry them around with me
26:34
for twenty some years, and it's the right thing to do, and I
26:37
refuse to quit. You mentioned you kind of give a hypothetical about the lady.
26:42
What's a lot of hype that is a true story. I was going
26:45
to say, I was going to say, if it weren't hypothetical story,
26:48
give give me without mentioning names, obviously, to give you a thousand,
26:52
give me a couple of good examples of the work that helped story for working
26:56
people. Okay, So I have a lady I know offhand right now.
26:59
She's a mom to four, left an abusive relationship, trying to work.
27:03
She works at McDonald's getting some help with like support with her kids and everything
27:08
like that. Dental work. There's a cap on dental work. It's like
27:14
a thousand dollars that you can do that with through denthers or anything like that.
27:17
But she came to us needed help. Not a lot of people can
27:19
get good employment when their teeth are horrific. You know, you don't want
27:23
to hire somebody that has really bad dentureth oral health. So we work to
27:29
do extractions on her, get her mouth repaired, get her back and working.
27:33
I got a guy from Rohan County who actually gave us authorization to share
27:37
his pictures. It's the worst mouth I've ever seen in my entire life.
27:40
Thirty four year old gentlemen had to have a complete, complete extraction of his
27:45
entire mouth. Couldn't work, couldn't get any jobs. And we helped get
27:49
him denthers and put dinghers back in his mouth. And now he's grinning and
27:52
he's working and everything's great. You think, how do people get an these
27:55
situations? It happens every day when people have to make a decision between oral
27:59
health care and food or food for their kids, are paying their light bill,
28:03
They're going to pay their light bill. That's what we do. We
28:06
take care of what we need to take care of, and people kick that
28:08
can down the road, and that's what we do. That's what we do
28:11
at health Rate. We try to be down the road and collect those cans
28:15
and try to get people back back in shape and back where they need to
28:18
be. But there's just two alternatives. I've seen it in life all my
28:22
career. At health Rate. We either get people that are you know,
28:25
they just lost their job, they're hurting, they need their medicines. Or
28:26
we get people who have put put it off. They didn't want to come
28:30
in, they're too proud, they don't want to help for their diabetes or
28:33
whatever. And we've had people come in with these huge, huge iabetic ulcers
28:37
on their legs and they end up losing you know, having to have their
28:41
leg amputated and everything because they put it off so long they went without their
28:45
insulin and at that point is too late. And then we try to you
28:48
know, play clean up and get them you know, get them fixed up,
28:51
get them on in some and try to prevent future damage. But it
28:53
happens all the time, day, all the time because people in West Virginia
28:56
are proud. Most of them do want to work. Work, and that's
29:00
what we're here to do. I tell people every day we help and I
29:03
say the people. Sometimes you judge you for saying working poor. I say
29:07
that with love. They're working and they're poor and they're trying. We help
29:11
working poor people of West Virginia every day. Stay gainful, employed, stay
29:15
paying on the tax base, stay proud, be able to keep their mental
29:18
health great. They all want to work, and we're the thing that gives
29:22
them that leg up to help them do that. We're not giving handouts,
29:25
we're giving hand ups. I was good. I pray that people get to
29:27
the place where they don't need health rate every day. You want to be
29:32
put out of a job based on you know you're saying I do? I
29:33
would, I would have a party. I would have a party if we
29:37
were put out of a job because I want people to do better. I
29:40
want them to do better and get some great, high paying job with great
29:42
insurance. But I'm telling you without us that people that wait your tables every
29:48
day, the people that wait on you when you go in the gas station.
29:52
All of those people that take care of your kids, ninety nine percent
29:56
of them know me by name. They come to us for care, and
29:57
we are what stands in the gap for those people. So your big big
30:03
doings, uh is three o'clock on Wednesday, talking about talk about right,
30:07
No, you're always welcome on my show to talk about anything you want to
30:11
talk about. Let's talk about specifically on Wednesday, Wednesday, three o'clock.
30:15
Yes, sir, we are going to celebrate. We are having you know,
30:18
supposedly you know, some some local dignitaries and I don't know, who
30:22
knows. There may be a little dog, I'm not sure that may come.
30:26
Who knows. I'm not announcing, that's not my place to say.
30:27
But a lot of people here to celebrate with us. The hard work and
30:32
dedication, uh, you know of our staff and the fundraising and the you
30:36
know BBO and ZMM who helped us with the BBLL did the build, ZMM
30:41
did the design. It's just, you know, it's just been a lot
30:45
of hard work, prayers, effort to think and strategizing and everything. And
30:51
I'm just really proud of what we have now have and when I another thing
30:56
that I'm really adam and about with people. People get this idea if you're
31:00
something for free, that it has to be secondhand or be some dirty,
31:03
dingy, dusty you know, room with whatever, and you know, you
31:07
give people whatever. And I'm a firm believer in people deserve to be treated
31:12
with dignity and they deserve to be treated as well as you're right to be
31:15
deserve to be treated. So if somebody comes in my pay as my patient,
31:19
I want them to get them the same care that my grandmother, my
31:22
sister, my mother, my brother, my daughter would get. It should
31:26
be with dignity, they should have pride, they should be treated well.
31:29
These are our neighbors, this is our community. These are people we love.
31:33
These are people that we get to know firsthand. We know their stories
31:36
and their struggles. And I'm proud to be the head of an organization with
31:41
a great board that shares that vision that is that we can hand this to
31:45
the communion and say, look, because of what we've done for you,
31:48
and we're really proud of it. Wednesday, three o'clock, that's when you're
31:52
going to cut the ribbon and you give give tours and so on. So
31:55
for they get people want everybody's welcome. We might have some little snacks.
31:57
Who knows. All right, you know you're gonna be okay if you don't
32:00
know how to open up a little bit. That's why I love having you
32:05
on the show. As you settle from health right, I appreciate you being
32:07
here. Thank you. We'll see you Wednesday at three o'clock. It is

Kelly. Note to self Gilbert, Hey Robbie wait to be here. So
36:50
what do you got going on? You and Kelly Gilbert Gibson, Kelly,
36:53
Kelly Gilbert and I are happy to be here. This weekend is the CAMC
36:58
Foundation Summer lou Al. It's our third year of this outdoor beach casual event
37:04
that supports CAMC Women and Children's Hospital and all of the services that are provided
37:09
there, especially for our little kids with big medical problems, and then also
37:13
for our Family Resource Center, which Kelly will dive into here in a second,
37:16
but then coming up this Saturday, June twenty ninth at the Clee Center.
37:19
All right, so dive into it, Kelly, since I got your
37:22
name wrong, so go ahead. Well thanks. So the CAMC Family Resource
37:27
Center is a unique hospital based unit located on the campus of Women and Children's
37:31
were known in the community as the FRC, and we provide mental health services
37:36
in a pretty robust childbirth education program. So this whole thing is a big
37:39
fundraiser for this How many years you been doing this, rob So this is
37:44
the third year that we have pivoted away from our black tie gala and gone
37:49
to this outdoor concept. The black tie gala prior to that was well established
37:52
in the community over twenty years in existence. The CAMC Foundation itself was formed
37:58
in nineteen seventy six and it's coming up on its fiftieth year. CAMC Health
38:02
System is on its fifty second year, so just about as old as the
38:07
health system is, so is the foundation. And you guys just do fantastic
38:10
work there. I've seen firsthand of the work that you do there what Kelly
38:15
was describing there. Thank you. We are proud of our work. But
38:16
it's important to note that this work is not made possible without the support of
38:21
so many loyal donors here in the community. And this thing has been you
38:23
talked about how it had gone a from a black tie affair to doing this
38:29
outdoor thing the last couple of years and more of a you know, not
38:31
that you can't party with a black tie. I mean, you know,
38:34
you and I could party at a funeral, and I think we have we
38:37
have just how you said at the same time we have. Robbie and I
38:39
go way back. But in all seriousness, I mean, this is a
38:44
fun event. People can come out and just have a good time and choice
38:49
some great music, great food. It is it is a fun event,
38:51
you know, We've found over the last couple of years, people in the
38:52
community have now come to expect this. It's something they look forward to.
38:57
They look forward to not having to put on their formal dress or their tuxedo
39:00
instead of Hawaiian shirt, a sundress, flip flops, and just take a
39:04
casual evening out, all while supporting some really good work at Women and Children's
39:08
Hospital. The Foundation partners with the Family Resource Center to provide some services that
39:15
wouldn't otherwise be possible without the loyal donors that we have and primarily this event
39:21
too, and the community always always steps up for this. I'm talking about
39:24
the sponsored because you can't do events like this, guys without without corporate buy
39:30
in from a lot of and individual buy into. But with these companies really
39:32
really race to this absolutely. You know, our sponsors make up the vast
39:37
majority of the fundraising for this event. And you know, each year we've
39:45
been doing this, we've seen it grow significantly. This year, we're looking
39:47
at probably upwards of seven hundred guests that we're going to welcome into the grounds
39:52
of the Clay Center. We have a great band, Jay Tucker and the
39:55
crew that are coming in. We have some Polynesian entertainment that are going to
40:00
sold on off the group. Polynesian Entertainedmlnesians are going to be fire. So
40:02
there's going to be some fire. Yeah, there's going to be some hula
40:06
dancing, everything that you would think of when it comes to Hawaiian vacation.
40:10
We hope to bring it to the grounds of the class. So that way,

org. And guess this is kind of morphed into one of those things that
41:10
people here in the Charleston area just really look forward to. You have those
41:14
four or five six I mean, we have so many things going on in
41:15
the valley, but I mean you have those four or five things a year
41:19
that everybody looks forward to, and this has become one of those things.
41:22
It has become one of those things, you know. I think it's important
41:24
for folks to know that when they support this event, there are very specific
41:29
things that this event raises money for at women and children. So I would
41:34
like to ask Kelly to give an example of some of the programs or services
41:37
that these help. Oh, definitely, We're so grateful to the foundation for
41:40
the funding that they give us. And it supports ancillary dollars for therapy services.
41:46
It supports supplies and technology for our childbirth Education program. It supports Gg's
41:52
Place at the Cancer Center where children can obtain free counseling services if they have
41:57
a family member who's diagnosed with cancer. These are just some of the examples.
42:01
We also have a bereavement Line item. There's nothing more devastating, you
42:06
know than losing a baby, a child, and the foundation dollars support tangible
42:09
memory boxes for those who experience a loss. Those boxes are filled with baby
42:15
items that help those grieving parents. So you know, you can see that
42:17
there are a lot of things that the Foundation does to help support these programs
42:22
that we have at the Family Resource Center. So all going on this Saturday,
42:24
guys. I appreciate you being here, Kelly Gilberts and Robbie Queen for
42:29
the CAMC Foundation. Kelly, I don't know if Robbie told you, but

has got the good stuff. Tech says, must be a slow news day
46:15
since WCCHS is non stop running the Herbert Hoover principal getting the dui story.
46:21
No children were involved, So why the constant coverage? Will you be reporting
46:23
all DUIs including local business owners? Well, you know, I am not
46:28
a member of the of the news department. I can tell you that we
46:31
are not the only medium in the city that is reporting this. I I
46:37
in the mornings as I'm sipping my coffee in a sitting catatonic in front of
46:40
the TV before I turn on the radio mode I frequently, I frequently will
46:47
turn on the turn on the TV news, and it was the big story
46:52
on the TV news this morning. Two. So again, not remember the
46:55
news department. I can't necessarily answer to that. I understand what we had

A phone call.'st go and talk to our friend Jim. Good morning,

48:39
Hunt situation story posted WCCHS network dot com on Friday, former police chief Tyke
48:45
Hunt in Charleston granted his full medical disability pension by the Charleston PDS Pension Board.
48:52
Now he'll be getting six thousand and thirty eight dollars a month starting on
48:57
July first. He had returned from medical leave in May after serving a twenty
49:04
day suspension for violating police department policies. He was a court of course,
49:08
accused by two women of inappropriate conduct. He, of course, you know
49:15
the story now. Ty Hunt, a former police chief, went down to
49:17
lieutenant, then demoted to corporal. The board itself is a four member body
49:24
made up of two current police officers and two retired officers. Now, the
49:30
vote was for it to nothing to grant him the disability. Our news team,
49:37
of course, was covering it, as were all the other news teams
49:38
here in the valley. The decision came down in executive session, and if
49:43
I heard the story correctly, I don't think Ty Hunt was there in person.
49:46
I think he was on the phone. It was done in executive session,
49:52
and you kind of, regardless of what people wanted to happen, you
49:55
kind of knew it was going to go this way. I mean, when
49:59
you have the board is being you know, a couple of police officers couple,
50:04
and I'm nothing at all against police officers, please don't get me wrong,
50:07
but you kind of knew where this was going. So we got a
50:10
story posted about at WCCHS network dot com and Jeff is going to join Hoppy
50:15
to talk about it on the on the talk line a little bit later today.

50:50
it's it's never easy, UH to lose a friend, and I lost a
50:57
good one over the weekend, uh VIC of a motorcycle crash. Dennis Jarvis
51:04
was his name, and he was a frequent caller to this show. Texter
51:09
to this show, and the only reason I knew hey, Texas because he
51:14
totally called me later and said, yeah, that was me that texted that,
51:16
because when I see texts, I don't know who they come from.
51:20
Dennis not only called this show, he was a regular on sports Line,
51:24
on Hotline, on all the lines. He was a native of McDowell County
51:30
and I first met Dennis when he was hired as economic Development director in Logan
51:34
County in the late nineties. Early two thousands, he was also Economic Development
51:37
director in Grant County, West Virginia, and did similar type work in Mississippi,
51:43
North Carolina, Alabama, among other places. Most recently he was working
51:49
in New River Community College. And Dennis's love for politics could only be compared
51:57
to his love of sports. Held degrees from both West Virginia University and Marshall
52:04
University and was a rabid fan of both schools, and he could talk and
52:08
or argue any sport from football to NASCAR politics down there as well. Truly
52:14
one of the good guys, and he was taken away way too soon in
52:16
his early fifties in a motorcycle accident over the weekend. He will be miss
52:22
rip old buddy Dennis. Hey, if you haven't done so already, make
