- 3:12Speaker 2: track of everything, and we're so busy that we're gonna
- 3:15Speaker 2: skip the chit chat today because we have a lot
- 3:18Speaker 2: of a lot we're going to cover and in place
- 3:21Speaker 2: of chit chat, real quick, Jordan, you haven't been on
- 3:24Speaker 2: the show that much, so introduce yourself sure, and tell
- 3:28Speaker 2: everyone real quick about your the crazy new podcast you're doing.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Absolutely, Yeah, I'm Jordan Sillers. I'm a managing editor for
- 3:37Speaker 6: the website and then I also help Cal with his podcast,
- 3:40Speaker 6: Cal's Week in Review. Starting up a new podcast. We
- 3:43Speaker 6: launched a pilot episode in March that you may have seen.
- 3:47Speaker 6: It's called Blood Trails. It's a true crime podcast about hunters, anglers, campers, hikers,
- 3:53Speaker 6: you know, everyone sort of in our world and really
- 3:57Speaker 6: excited about it. We have eight episod so it's coming
- 4:00Speaker 6: out in this first season. We have a story of
- 4:04Speaker 6: a hunter who disappeared under very suspicious circumstances. We have
- 4:08Speaker 6: a story of a hunter who was found stabbed seventeen
- 4:15Speaker 6: times and the medical examiner ruled a suicide.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So that's Randa, Where were you during that time?
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah, i'd have to know. I need the details because
- 4:26Speaker 4: I was not involved. Noted noted.
- 4:29Speaker 6: There's a story of a hunter who was shot with
- 4:31Speaker 6: his own rifle. Uh, and there's thoughts about whether it
- 4:36Speaker 6: was someone close to him who may have done it.
- 4:38Speaker 6: So lots of really interesting stories. We think it's you know,
- 4:42Speaker 6: we hope people like it and we're really excited.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Oh man, I mean, of course they're gonna like it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Like the true crime genre is like bananas these days,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and and I think you've already got like the hunting
- 4:52Speaker 2: crowd locked in, So you need to market this to
- 4:55Speaker 2: like suburban soccer moms who there you go spend their
- 4:58Speaker 2: time watching true crime? Well, hey on Netflix.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Right listen if if you love me eater content and
- 5:04Speaker 6: you've always wanted to get your wife to watch or
- 5:07Speaker 6: listen to me eater content, Yeah, this is this is
- 5:10Speaker 6: for you. You know, you guys can do this together.
- 5:12Speaker 6: I feel like I'm just bringing you know, strengthening relationships.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Do this every time I get into Sydney's car to
- 5:18Speaker 5: go somewhere with her. As soon as the cars powered on,
- 5:23Speaker 5: it's just immediately then he plunged the dagger in up.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 6: And one thing I just wanted to say, so, speaking
- 5:31Speaker 6: of the true crime genre, a lot of it out
- 5:35Speaker 6: there is you know, it's it's someone they read some
- 5:37Speaker 6: new stories, they read Wikipedia and that's and then they
- 5:40Speaker 6: kind of chat about it. This is not that, this
- 5:43Speaker 6: is original reporting. I talked to the people, Yeah, I mean,
- 5:47Speaker 6: I talked to the people who were involved, as long
- 5:49Speaker 6: as they're willing to talk to me, the family of
- 5:51Speaker 6: the victim, the law enforcement who investigated it, and we
- 5:54Speaker 6: tell you things that no one else has reported before.
- 5:57Speaker 5: And I will say too, like the the genre occasionally
- 6:02Speaker 5: leans into like the lurid, sure voyeuristic, and this is
- 6:07Speaker 5: very much not that. It's very much like straightforward, empathetic
- 6:12Speaker 5: reporting about pretty tragic situation.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I just gave Jordan a lead today or yesterday on
- 6:18Speaker 2: something that maybe someday will end up in the podcast.
- 6:21Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not going to say any more about that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see.
- 6:25Speaker 6: I'm looking into it.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, guys, we're gonna move on because we
- 6:29Speaker 2: got a bunch to talk about today. For our first
- 6:33Speaker 2: interview today, we've got Mike Coutz. I hope I pronounce
- 6:36Speaker 2: that right. Mike is the vice president of Access and
- 6:40Speaker 2: Infrastructure at American Prairie, which was formerly American Prairie Reserve.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They recently simplified it and they're just American Prairie now.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I hope I'm getting that right. Anyway, American Prairie is
- 6:53Speaker 2: an organization with a goal restoring and preserving short grasp
- 6:57Speaker 2: prairie ecosystems in central in northern Montana. It's an ecosystem
- 7:03Speaker 2: that's kind of suffering all over the country, and these
- 7:06Speaker 2: guys are doing a lot of good work here in
- 7:09Speaker 2: Montana and a big part of that plan they're what
- 7:13Speaker 2: they might be known for the best is re establishing
- 7:17Speaker 2: wild bison populations in that part of Montana. We've got
- 7:22Speaker 2: Mike on the line, Phil, here's Mike. Mike. Hey, guys,
- 7:26Speaker 2: thanks for joining us today. Having us to start out,
- 7:31Speaker 2: just give folks like the real quick version of who
- 7:35Speaker 2: American Prairie is, what they do and how they operate
- 7:40Speaker 2: as far as acquiring property to build into this collection
- 7:45Speaker 2: of hopefully interconnected shortcrass prairie landscapes.
- 7:51Speaker 7: Sure, sure so.
- 7:52Speaker 1: American Prairie is a Montana based nonprofit. We've been around
- 7:56Speaker 1: for over twenty years now, and as you mentioned, our
- 8:00Speaker 1: goal is.
- 8:01Speaker 7: To and our work is to.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Buy and acquire land that we manage for public access
- 8:09Speaker 1: and for wildlife habitat along the Missouri Breaks and the
- 8:13Speaker 1: Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, so that eventually we
- 8:17Speaker 1: have enough habitat to restore and intact prairie short grass ecosystem.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And we work on a willing buyer, willing selling, willing
- 8:26Speaker 1: seller model, and we've done I think over fifty land
- 8:32Speaker 1: transactions at this point, and.
- 8:35Speaker 2: How many total acres, Mike.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Right now we're sitting in about six hundred and three
- 8:41Speaker 1: thousand acres.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Of deeta in the leased land just a little bit.
- 8:47Speaker 7: It's a lot of driving that.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, my favorite part of the state up there
- 8:53Speaker 2: where you guys are working. Now. You mentioned that it's
- 8:58Speaker 2: a willing seller, willing buyer situations when you're acquiring these properties,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but I'd kind of be remiss to like not address
- 9:07Speaker 2: the fact that up in that part of Montana there's
- 9:10Speaker 2: like a certain group of people, like not everyone, but
- 9:16Speaker 2: like there's definitely like some pushback from some of the
- 9:20Speaker 2: locals in that part of the state about what you
- 9:22Speaker 2: guys are doing, and I just want to give you
- 9:24Speaker 2: a chance to speak to that and let us know
- 9:28Speaker 2: what's going on with that.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Absolutely, I think any big conservation project is not without controversy,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and we're certainly no exception to that. So when you
- 9:39Speaker 1: drive in that part of the state, you'll see save
- 9:42Speaker 1: the Cowboys, Stop American Praiority signs.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Those are produced.
- 9:45Speaker 1: By United Property Owners of Montana, which I encourage anyone
- 9:49Speaker 1: listening to this and folks who are from outside the
- 9:51Speaker 1: state and trying to study up on this, you can
- 9:54Speaker 1: just go to their website and see what they see,
- 9:57Speaker 1: what they're about. And some of this is simply, you know,
- 10:04Speaker 1: a disagreement over how you manage landscape, and some of
- 10:11Speaker 1: it is I think concern over you know, changes you
- 10:18Speaker 1: know in the region, and some of it it's just
- 10:20Speaker 1: that we're new, you know again, twenty years in Montana
- 10:24Speaker 1: is an eyeblink and so some of it's just been
- 10:27Speaker 1: we've had to go out there and earn trust, say
- 10:31Speaker 1: what we're going to do, and then back that up
- 10:33Speaker 1: with action, and so I think what you find is
- 10:37Speaker 1: we go out, you talk to our over the fence neighbors,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you talk to the more than sixty ranchers in the
- 10:43Speaker 1: region that we partner with on leasing grass or working
- 10:47Speaker 1: through our wild Sky program.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Together, you find that actually we have great relationships.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And I think you know head on, we are not
- 10:58Speaker 1: the enemy of Montana agriculture.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, I mean.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Agriculture does great. The reason that we can do this
- 11:04Speaker 1: in this part of the world is because all of
- 11:06Speaker 1: the good stewardship that Montana ranchers have carried out for
- 11:10Speaker 1: generations on this landscape. And often we find that we
- 11:14Speaker 1: actually have the same goal, which is that we're hoping
- 11:17Speaker 1: that and working to have this landscape look much like
- 11:21Speaker 1: it does right now. Slightly different methods there sometimes, but
- 11:25Speaker 1: at the end of the day, we want this place
- 11:27Speaker 1: to you know, as you're saying, it is one of
- 11:28Speaker 1: the most spectacular parts not only Montana, but the entire
- 11:32Speaker 1: United States, and we'll all work in to make sure
- 11:35Speaker 1: it stays that way.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And something I'll point out is that on like I'm
- 11:41Speaker 2: not sure like what percentage of the acreage this is
- 11:45Speaker 2: true on, but there's still cattle ranching going on on
- 11:49Speaker 2: some of your properties.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and again that's you know, I think, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: when folks say, hey, there's controversy around this, a lot
- 11:58Speaker 1: of that controversy is coming from a lack of understanding
- 12:02Speaker 1: of what we actually do. So, you know, we're sometimes
- 12:07Speaker 1: get cast as like these bison folks who want wild
- 12:10Speaker 1: bison everywhere. We manage our bison as livestock, so we
- 12:15Speaker 1: disease test them. They're contained behind fences. They're not wild,
- 12:19Speaker 1: free roaming bison. They're an important part of conserving them
- 12:22Speaker 1: as a species, but they're not wild and free roaming.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And we have about eight hundred and fifty bison right
- 12:30Speaker 1: now on two properties.
- 12:31Speaker 7: We have over seven thousand cattle on our properties. So
- 12:36Speaker 7: most of our properties, the grazer that does.
- 12:40Speaker 1: That role in the ecosystem, you know, which again is
- 12:42Speaker 1: a really important one, is cattle. And again, I was
- 12:46Speaker 1: listening to Cal on the Joe Rogan podcast this week
- 12:49Speaker 1: while I was driving, and it was awesome to hear
- 12:53Speaker 1: him talking in front of such a huge audience about
- 12:55Speaker 1: the value of prairies and that prairies globally are disappearing
- 12:59Speaker 1: faster than any other ecosystem, and we have one of
- 13:03Speaker 1: the best chances to set aside and protect some of
- 13:08Speaker 1: our remaining grasslands anywhere in the world, right here in Montana.
- 13:11Speaker 1: And so hearing him talk to Joe about that was awesome.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And yet even cal who again, I mean, he's he's
- 13:18Speaker 1: here in Montana, you know, had a couple of bits
- 13:21Speaker 1: of misinformation about American prairie.
- 13:23Speaker 7: You know, our our.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Money doesn't come from the Dutch. Ninety seven percent is
- 13:26Speaker 1: from within the United States. And our bison don't come
- 13:29Speaker 1: from Yellowstone. They came from Elk Island to Canada. And uh,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and we've done trades with some of our tribal neighbors
- 13:37Speaker 1: who have Yellowstone genetics in their herd.
- 13:39Speaker 7: But but again I think that's and not to give
- 13:41Speaker 7: cal a hard time, because.
- 13:42Speaker 2: No, no, we'll make sure he hears this, for sure.
- 13:46Speaker 7: We don't.
- 13:46Speaker 4: We don't let go any chance to correct cal On.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Oh well you can, you can tell me shanked it
- 13:53Speaker 1: on that one.
- 13:54Speaker 7: He's just a mess, But he's a good guy.
- 13:56Speaker 2: He'll acknowledged that he got wrong and make a correction.
- 14:00Speaker 1: But uh, but you know, I think it just speaks
- 14:03Speaker 1: to look, you know, here's somebody who's really well educated
- 14:06Speaker 1: on conservation in Montana and around the US, but still
- 14:10Speaker 1: had some of you know, these sort of persistent you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: miss misinformation about what we actually do, and a lot
- 14:18Speaker 1: of that's on us, Like we can to make.
- 14:19Speaker 7: Sure we're out here talking to folks.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You know, we're a bunch of Montana's We're a Montana
- 14:26Speaker 1: nonprofit buying land, opening up to public access, managing it
- 14:30Speaker 1: for wildlife.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, let's let's talk about that. I mean, one of
- 14:35Speaker 2: the great things about American Prairie is that most, if
- 14:40Speaker 2: not I'm not sure if it's all of your properties,
- 14:43Speaker 2: but most of the properties are open to public access
- 14:46Speaker 2: for recreational purposes, which you know, it could be hiking,
- 14:50Speaker 2: wildlife viewing. I think you guys have a campground. There's
- 14:54Speaker 2: fishing opportunities, and there's hunting opportunities. American Prairie runs a lottery,
- 15:00Speaker 2: but for several bison hunting opportunities.
- 15:03Speaker 8: Uh.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Randall's wife last year took advantage of that and got herself.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Got herself was a great She sat a big bold no.
- 15:12Speaker 1: No.
- 15:12Speaker 4: She she had one of the yearling.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Oh, she had one of.
- 15:14Speaker 4: The yearling tags.
- 15:15Speaker 5: But honestly, the one of the coolest, wildest hunting experiences
- 15:19Speaker 5: of my life.
- 15:20Speaker 2: You guys still eating that thing?
- 15:21Speaker 4: Oh yeah, nice, Yeah, we just got the hide back.
- 15:24Speaker 2: So beyond the bison thing, like, you can go on
- 15:27Speaker 2: these properties and hunt small game, upland birds, waterfowl, big
- 15:31Speaker 2: game through Montana's Block Management program, which is a public
- 15:36Speaker 2: access to private land program. It's like one of the
- 15:40Speaker 2: best programs and if not the best program of that
- 15:43Speaker 2: type in the entire country as far as I'm concerned. So, like,
- 15:48Speaker 2: I mean, if you're an outdoorsman, you should just be
- 15:51Speaker 2: like supporting this. I think it's a very good opportunity,
- 15:57Speaker 2: which leads us to kind of the latest big story
- 16:00Speaker 2: that involves American prairie. So Mike tell us about Bullwhacker Road,
- 16:07Speaker 2: the Wilkes brothers and your your latest acquisition and why
- 16:13Speaker 2: it's such an important public access win for all kinds
- 16:17Speaker 2: of outdoors enthusiasts, including hunters.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, this has been one of the things
- 16:23Speaker 1: we've been most excited about over the last couple of years.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Here.
- 16:27Speaker 1: We closed on a property called the Anchor Ranch that's
- 16:31Speaker 1: on the north side of the Missouri River about seventy
- 16:34Speaker 1: miles southeast to have her on the high line and
- 16:38Speaker 1: sixty six thousand acres of deeded and least land. But
- 16:41Speaker 1: most importantly the deeded land includes a four mile section
- 16:45Speaker 1: of the Bullwhacker Road that was you know, in and
- 16:48Speaker 1: out of court. You know, Brett French from the Billings
- 16:51Speaker 1: Gazad has done some awesome reporting on this. Anyone who's
- 16:54Speaker 1: really interested in this kind of stuff can look up
- 16:56Speaker 1: his articles. But essentially, you had a four mile section
- 16:59Speaker 1: a row that was landlocking over fifty thousand acres of
- 17:03Speaker 1: public land, mostly BLM few state sections in there. And
- 17:08Speaker 1: normally when we when we buy a property, we take
- 17:11Speaker 1: about a year to figure out all the public access
- 17:14Speaker 1: and you know, to do a full review of it.
- 17:18Speaker 1: This we were so excited about this we opened.
- 17:20Speaker 7: The road right away.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and said, look, you know this, this one's too
- 17:23Speaker 1: important to you know, sit on for a year.
- 17:26Speaker 7: We're going to open it at least this section.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And it's it's just one of the most historic parts
- 17:33Speaker 1: of the Northern Great Plains too, and has a fascinating history.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It's you know, part of the Cow Creek which runs
- 17:40Speaker 1: through part of the property was part of the Nez
- 17:42Speaker 1: Perce Trail, so where Chief Joseph led his people up
- 17:45Speaker 1: from the Missouri River and the ford where they crossed
- 17:47Speaker 1: on foot up.
- 17:49Speaker 7: Into the Bears Paw Mountains, the Bullwhacker Road.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I mean it's named that because there were guys, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: whipping bowls up out of the Missouri River because a
- 17:57Speaker 1: lot of years the steamboats from Saint Louis only get
- 18:00Speaker 1: up to about that point. So incredible history and just
- 18:04Speaker 1: an incredible landscape. You know, whether it's in hunting season
- 18:07Speaker 1: or whether it's in the spring, you go down in there,
- 18:09Speaker 1: I mean, it's just you know.
- 18:11Speaker 7: An absolute maze of coolies.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And prairie canyons, and you know, an incredible place to
- 18:17Speaker 1: get lost and to go explore.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And again again like this, this will now open up
- 18:25Speaker 2: fifty thousand acres of what was landlocked public land.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Correct, yep, exactly, And so I mean again, a lot
- 18:33Speaker 1: of your listeners have probably seen on X and Theodore
- 18:38Speaker 1: Roosevelt Conservation Partnerships reports on landlocked public land around the country,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and there's millions of acres, and you know, one of
- 18:46Speaker 1: our goals with property purchases is to look at those
- 18:51Speaker 1: ones where you know, boy, if we bought that deed,
- 18:54Speaker 1: it it opens up this amount of public land too.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You know, we a couple of years ago we bought
- 18:58Speaker 1: one on the Muscleshell called the seventy three that had
- 19:02Speaker 1: ten thousand acres landlocked by I mean it was essentially
- 19:05Speaker 1: one hundred feet.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Of two tracks across the Yeah.
- 19:08Speaker 7: So wherever possible we do that.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And yeah, as you mentioned, you know, the vast majority
- 19:12Speaker 1: of our dataed acres are open to public access year round.
- 19:17Speaker 5: And Mike that when that seventy three ranch sold, I mean,
- 19:20Speaker 5: I know there was an attempt to buy the by
- 19:23Speaker 5: the BLM, I believe to acquire it. They were unable
- 19:26Speaker 5: to given the sort of strictures around federal land acquisitions.
- 19:30Speaker 5: But someone was going to buy that land, right like,
- 19:34Speaker 5: like that property was for sale, someone was going to
- 19:36Speaker 5: buy it. And so in this case, because American Prairie
- 19:39Speaker 5: was the buyer, all that landlocked public land is now
- 19:42Speaker 5: open to the public in addition to the access that
- 19:45Speaker 5: you guys provide through block management.
- 19:48Speaker 7: Yeah, it's just a big win.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 1: And both of those properties too are examples of you know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: large properties that were formerly owned by out of state owners,
- 19:59Speaker 1: largely as either private hunting properties or as you know,
- 20:04Speaker 1: amenity properties or investments and so you know, again we
- 20:08Speaker 1: think a Montana based nonprofit now owning them, now managing
- 20:13Speaker 1: it for public access and for wildlife habitat.
- 20:15Speaker 7: I mean, that's that's a net positive.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I'm sitting in the room having given a presentation last
- 20:21Speaker 1: week where I was showing these, you know, these charts
- 20:23Speaker 1: for what the growth of populations in Montana have done
- 20:28Speaker 1: over the last couple of years since COVID. I mean,
- 20:30Speaker 1: we're sitting here at Bozeman and see that, you know,
- 20:33Speaker 1: it's grown by eighty six percent in the Gallatin Valley.
- 20:36Speaker 2: This is supposed to be good news, Mike.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Well, so here's the other, you know, to set up
- 20:42Speaker 1: the good news. This is what public land you know,
- 20:46Speaker 1: has done. It's essentially flat. Yeah, not only flat, but
- 20:49Speaker 1: I mean cal has done such an incredible job at
- 20:51Speaker 1: all of you you know, at meat eater, backcountry hunters
- 20:54Speaker 1: and anglers in fighting the efforts to sell off public
- 20:57Speaker 1: land recently. But so not only have we not been
- 20:59Speaker 1: created more public land necessarily, you know, we've even had
- 21:03Speaker 1: you know, proposals to sell it off. So I think
- 21:07Speaker 1: that's part of the bigger, bigger world in which we
- 21:10Speaker 1: operate is Look, we are trying our hardest to shift
- 21:14Speaker 1: that a little bit, you know, because we as a species,
- 21:16Speaker 1: we certainly are making more people more of ourselves, we're
- 21:20Speaker 1: not necessarily, you know, doing as much to create more good,
- 21:25Speaker 1: publicly accessible land.
- 21:26Speaker 7: And that's a big.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Part of what gets me up every day and into
- 21:30Speaker 1: the office and out in the field.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah. So got asked, new property, is it open to hunting?
- 21:40Speaker 7: Not this year?
- 21:41Speaker 1: This is yhere. We got to take it to h
- 21:43Speaker 1: And as you were saying, you know, b M A contracts,
- 21:46Speaker 1: generally we finalize those in May or June.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so it just wasn't the timing wasn't right.
- 21:52Speaker 7: Exactly exactly.
- 21:53Speaker 1: So I'd say, stay tuned, you know, we'll have a
- 21:55Speaker 1: public access you know policy. I'd say by by next
- 22:00Speaker 1: summer and certainly by the next hunting season.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So but what about but the road is open, road
- 22:07Speaker 2: is open, Okay.
- 22:08Speaker 1: So so folks can access all of the BLM and
- 22:12Speaker 1: state land to the south. And also I'll just give
- 22:15Speaker 1: my usual safety plug, like don't drive your minivan down
- 22:18Speaker 1: in there, don't take the Corolla.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Watch the weather forecast.
- 22:23Speaker 7: Watch the weather forecast. Right now.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I just had a meeting with some of the BLM
- 22:27Speaker 1: monument folks this week and they were saying, there's a
- 22:30Speaker 1: there's a VW s u V rented from the Billings
- 22:34Speaker 1: Airport that's been sitting down in there.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Since about May.
- 22:38Speaker 1: It's nice and they couldn't get it out, so it's
- 22:42Speaker 1: it's rugged.
- 22:43Speaker 7: You know, you got to do your homework before you
- 22:45Speaker 7: drive down in there.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah, don't even try if it's going to rain or snow.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It's good advice, I think, Mike, before we let you go,
- 22:56Speaker 2: thanks for all this really is good news. Can you
- 23:00Speaker 2: pull out your crystal ball and kind of give us
- 23:03Speaker 2: an idea of what we can expect from American prayer
- 23:07Speaker 2: kind of in the near future and and kind of
- 23:10Speaker 2: layout like what best case scenario, end goal would be
- 23:14Speaker 2: for you guys.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely so.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I think again, we recognize, hey, being around for twenty years,
- 23:23Speaker 1: you know, we're still earning trust. And that goes for
- 23:26Speaker 1: you know, the general public, It goes for ranchers, it
- 23:29Speaker 1: goes for hunters, it goes for you know, folks who
- 23:33Speaker 1: are just curious about, you know, what this thing is.
- 23:35Speaker 7: They've heard of.
- 23:36Speaker 1: So I'd say continue to look to us to you know,
- 23:40Speaker 1: illustrate our or to underwrite our words. With deeds, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 1: in terms of public access, you know, I used to
- 23:47Speaker 1: get questions like, hey, are you guys, you know, is
- 23:49Speaker 1: this some sort of bait and switch. Are you guys
- 23:51Speaker 1: just offering public access? And then you're going to like lock.
- 23:54Speaker 2: The gates up, right, That's something I'm absolutely not.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Like, we buy properties that have conservation easements on them.
- 24:00Speaker 1: This year, we donated one hundred and nine acres to
- 24:03Speaker 1: the state of Montana to create a state park at
- 24:05Speaker 1: Judith Landing. You know, we open previously landlocked public land
- 24:10Speaker 1: across our deeded roads and then assume the costs of
- 24:13Speaker 1: maintaining those roads. So I'd say, continue to judge us
- 24:16Speaker 1: on what we do. And you know, I think we
- 24:19Speaker 1: often say, look, you know, we're not asking for support
- 24:23Speaker 1: or endorsement, you know.
- 24:25Speaker 7: Do your homework, come to your own conclusion.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But we do ask for understanding, like just just understand
- 24:30Speaker 1: what we're actually doing. And in terms of public access, yeah,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I think it's probably going to look a lot like
- 24:35Speaker 1: what you see right now, where you know, we're in
- 24:38Speaker 1: the top ten largest landowners in the state enrolled in
- 24:41Speaker 1: that block management access program with FVP, They're an incredible
- 24:45Speaker 1: agency to work with for your listeners outside the state.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I mean, Montana is truly the last best place I
- 24:51Speaker 1: think as an outdoors person and as a hunter in particular.
- 24:55Speaker 7: So it's a lot of it.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You know, it's over eighty thousand acres available to hunt
- 25:00Speaker 1: in that program. We're building a couple more backcountry huts
- 25:04Speaker 1: in our huts system over the next two years, so
- 25:07Speaker 1: you'll see more of those and just more chances to
- 25:10Speaker 1: explore different parts of the prairie. Those have you've been
- 25:13Speaker 1: up there, know that you know some of it. It's
- 25:14Speaker 1: like incredibly steep, rugged Missouri breaks, ponderosa pines, kind of
- 25:19Speaker 1: bighorn sheep habitat, and then you get out on other
- 25:22Speaker 1: parts and it's kind of the rolling sagebrush sea, and
- 25:25Speaker 1: you know, we want to create opportunities for people to
- 25:28Speaker 1: go out and explore that and understand why this place
- 25:30Speaker 1: is so special and so worth.
- 25:33Speaker 7: Protecting and handing on to the next generation.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Cool. What can people do to support you if they're
- 25:39Speaker 2: interested in doing.
- 25:40Speaker 1: That, I'd say, you know, hey, from my standpoint, it's
- 25:44Speaker 1: come out and visit us. You can come out and
- 25:46Speaker 1: see what it looks like on the ground, and you
- 25:48Speaker 1: can plan a trip by just going to our website,
- 25:50Speaker 1: American Prairie dot org. We do have campgrounds, we have huts,
- 25:54Speaker 1: but you can also just go out and load up
- 25:57Speaker 1: your backpack and walk off, you know, you know, and
- 26:00Speaker 1: and spend the night. So I just encourage people to
- 26:03Speaker 1: go up there and make a visit and put your
- 26:05Speaker 1: name in the hat for the bison harvest we offer.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It is. Yeah, I've done it so far. I'm having
- 26:11Speaker 2: drawn Mike, so, you know, just saying just saying, thanks
- 26:19Speaker 2: a lot, Mike, it was great talking to you. We'll
- 26:21Speaker 2: have to check back in with you, you know, and
- 26:23Speaker 2: if something's happening, get in touch with us and and
- 26:26Speaker 2: we'll talk again.
- 26:27Speaker 7: We'll do we'll do all right. Thanks man, We'll see
- 26:30Speaker 7: you guys.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Okay, it's time to move on to some white Tail
- 26:36Speaker 2: week stuff. We're gonna do a throwback Thursday white Tail edition.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Go back on.
- 26:42Speaker 5: A Thursday, Mom, Stephen Rody, take me back to night.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I can't believe it. Did I mentioned Stephen Rody Old Ship.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I think you've mentioned that, Yeah, several times.
- 27:01Speaker 4: I think.
- 27:03Speaker 2: All right, guys, this is where we're gonna We're gonna
- 27:06Speaker 2: pull out the the memories today and let you guys
- 27:09Speaker 2: share some some white tail stuff with us. I think
- 27:12Speaker 2: you're up first, Randall already.
- 27:15Speaker 5: Phil, Oh, yes, I'll point out this picture is colored
- 27:19Speaker 5: very strangely. It's an archaic digital camera. It captures my
- 27:25Speaker 5: skin tone and blaze orange in a really weird way.
- 27:30Speaker 5: But that blood trail on the right, oh yeah, real nice.
- 27:35Speaker 5: This This, this is my biggest whitetail buck. I was
- 27:40Speaker 5: working construction at the time in two thousand and eight,
- 27:44Speaker 5: and I was going to go down to a property
- 27:47Speaker 5: in Kentucky that we had permission to hunt. And on Friday,
- 27:51Speaker 5: I was at the job site, had my truck all
- 27:54Speaker 5: loaded up, and they pulled me aside and told me
- 27:56Speaker 5: I was getting let go. And as soon as as
- 27:59Speaker 5: soon as they handed me my Cobra paperwork for poor
- 28:02Speaker 5: performance No.
- 28:03Speaker 7: No.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Two thousand and eight, man, oh, I got yeah. It
- 28:07Speaker 5: was a big slowdown. So they I said, you know,
- 28:12Speaker 5: I'm twenty two. I think it'll be fine, and I'm
- 28:14Speaker 5: going deer hunting. So my buddy went down there and
- 28:17Speaker 5: hunted with me the first weekend. I just stayed through
- 28:19Speaker 5: the week, and then he came down for the second
- 28:21Speaker 5: weekend and on day there's probably like day nine This
- 28:27Speaker 5: is what I mean. This is my idea of whitetail hunting.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Was just I'm gonna sit in the same tree for
- 28:32Speaker 5: like eight days, nine days in a row. I had
- 28:35Speaker 5: a little crotchboard set up there, and at some point,
- 28:39Speaker 5: like my buddy was just going to walk across the
- 28:41Speaker 5: property at about ten or eleven o'clock. Yeah, it's it's
- 28:44Speaker 5: like a hilltop property that's sort of balled on top,
- 28:48Speaker 5: and then like real dense stuff going down these fingers
- 28:53Speaker 5: down to the creek. So my buddy went across and
- 28:56Speaker 5: I could hear him walking, and then all of a sudden,
- 28:58Speaker 5: this buck. I'm basic set up on an old tractor road,
- 29:02Speaker 5: like an old tractor path going down this hill, and
- 29:05Speaker 5: this buck just crosses, and so I whip around and
- 29:09Speaker 5: shoot off the back of the tree as he's about
- 29:12Speaker 5: to dive back into the woods, and he turns and
- 29:14Speaker 5: runs straight away from me, and I got off another shot.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Sort of ironic that we're talking Tyler here in a bit,
- 29:20Speaker 5: because that was with a forty five seventy shooting.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Uh, because Ohio is well this shotguns and straight walls,
- 29:27Speaker 2: this is this is Kentucky. Oh that was Kentucky.
- 29:30Speaker 4: I got you.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Well, it's just because the romance of the big straight
- 29:34Speaker 5: wall carches the size of your finger and turns out
- 29:37Speaker 5: that first shot missed, but that second one the trick
- 29:41Speaker 5: did the old did the old Texas heart shot very good,
- 29:46Speaker 5: entered just inside of the ham right near the anus,
- 29:50Speaker 5: came out the front of that left hip and uh,
- 29:54Speaker 5: yeah it.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Was now it happened. That's not a shot that we
- 29:59Speaker 2: would reckon men here at meat Eater. But Randall is
- 30:02Speaker 2: like such a marksman.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Well that was a follow up.
- 30:07Speaker 6: I know, we don't really think that.
- 30:10Speaker 7: Yeah, and.
- 30:12Speaker 5: You know we went over there and and actually the
- 30:14Speaker 5: the landowner who was their scout masters showed up like
- 30:17Speaker 5: right then, and he's he's British and doesn't I mean,
- 30:20Speaker 5: he was just excited to have us hunting there and.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Oh you got a buck, you got a book, let's
- 30:24Speaker 4: see it.
- 30:25Speaker 5: And he drove the tractor down and we chained up
- 30:28Speaker 5: to the he like just fixed up antique tractors.
- 30:30Speaker 4: Then we hauled that thing up out of the bottom
- 30:32Speaker 4: and that was all. She wrote.
- 30:34Speaker 2: That's still your biggest buck to date, biggest whitetail buck
- 30:37Speaker 2: it is. Yeah, where where is that? What's where is that?
- 30:40Speaker 3: Thing.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Now. Oh, it's I've got in my home office.
- 30:43Speaker 5: I've got like nine deer heads just kind of scattered
- 30:47Speaker 5: on the little wall above it.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Youro mount. That's a homemade ero mount too nice.
- 30:52Speaker 5: So yeah, nice fun place. I wish I still uh
- 30:56Speaker 5: got to hunt that every year because yeah, deer in
- 30:59Speaker 5: the rut with a rifle.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yep, speaks to me.
- 31:03Speaker 2: All right, Jordan, you're up next. Let's see what you
- 31:05Speaker 2: got here.
- 31:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 31:07Speaker 6: So this isn't from super long ago. This is a
- 31:09Speaker 6: few years ago. This was out of property pretty near
- 31:13Speaker 6: to where we live in East Texas, and I really
- 31:17Speaker 6: like it. It's I don't own it, but we have
- 31:19Speaker 6: permission to hunt it, and I like it because it's
- 31:22Speaker 6: so close to our house. I can take the kids,
- 31:24Speaker 6: you know, evening Sunday evening, which is when I shot
- 31:27Speaker 6: this buck. And I also like remembering this hunt because
- 31:32Speaker 6: it was I don't think it was quite the last
- 31:35Speaker 6: day of the season, but it was the last day
- 31:37Speaker 6: that I was gonna hunt. I think it was right
- 31:39Speaker 6: before the last day, and this buck came in like
- 31:44Speaker 6: five minutes maybe before shooting light ended. If if he'd
- 31:49Speaker 6: been in the tree line I was looking at in
- 31:51Speaker 6: the stand. I might not have you know, been able
- 31:53Speaker 6: to see him, but he came in across a field
- 31:56Speaker 6: and so I could see a silhouette, you know, against
- 31:59Speaker 6: the the sky that was still bright. And in Texas
- 32:03Speaker 6: we have antler restrictions, so it has to be thirteen
- 32:05Speaker 6: inches between. And I saw him, you know, silhouetted against
- 32:09Speaker 6: the sky, and I said, looks good. It looks looks
- 32:12Speaker 6: like it's going to be good. So shot him from
- 32:17Speaker 6: maybe fifty yards it was not a far shot with
- 32:21Speaker 6: with a six or five creed more and he went,
- 32:23Speaker 6: you know, maybe forty or fifty yards, but he ran
- 32:25Speaker 6: kind of into the tree line, and so there was
- 32:28Speaker 6: a little bit of tension. And my son was with
- 32:32Speaker 6: me and he you know, if hunting ever becomes boring
- 32:38Speaker 6: or you know, kind of a drudgery, like take an
- 32:40Speaker 6: eight year old boy, you know with you. Because he
- 32:43Speaker 6: was the most stickxcited.
- 32:44Speaker 4: He was high five.
- 32:46Speaker 5: Was that the first deer had been a part of it?
- 32:49Speaker 6: Was Yeah, he'd been around when I'd brought deer home
- 32:52Speaker 6: to like, you know, clean him and butcher them. But
- 32:54Speaker 6: this was the first one, the first hunt that he'd
- 32:57Speaker 6: been a part of.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Is he now, is he hot?
- 32:58Speaker 8: Now he is.
- 32:59Speaker 6: Yeah, he got he got a doe last year.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Oh great, yeah, great.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:03Speaker 6: So he came down with, you know, with me, and
- 33:05Speaker 6: I like wanted to do it right, like find some blood,
- 33:07Speaker 6: follow the trail, but he just like right into the woods,
- 33:10Speaker 6: you know, and of course he found it first, and
- 33:13Speaker 6: just like that's excited.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yeah that's okay, Well cool, you get you gonna get
- 33:17Speaker 2: him after a buck this year?
- 33:19Speaker 6: He yeah, he wants to. Yeah that's for sure, but
- 33:22Speaker 6: we'll see, all.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Right, guess that leaves me. This is when was this like, I.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Don't know, mid two thousands, A little.
- 33:33Speaker 3: No, it's like same, same camera quality as similar right.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Around the same time as would you say, oh wait.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I bet this camera ran on a double a battery.
- 33:43Speaker 6: Yes.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Anyway, this is back in Pennsylvania where like this is
- 33:48Speaker 2: a place I grew up hunting. This my buddy buddy's
- 33:51Speaker 2: dad's land. My buddy's dad has now passed away, but
- 33:54Speaker 2: my buddy still hunts his property.
- 33:57Speaker 5: And this this was.
- 34:00Speaker 2: The first like big nice buck I had ever shot
- 34:04Speaker 2: in Pennsylvania. Grew up deer hunting. But like when I
- 34:08Speaker 2: was growing up, man like there just wasn't very many
- 34:13Speaker 2: big bucks around like this one. They just didn't live
- 34:16Speaker 2: long enough. We would see a shit ton of deer hunting,
- 34:20Speaker 2: but it would be like twenty two does and a
- 34:22Speaker 2: spike in a day of hunting, and like you just
- 34:26Speaker 2: shot whatever buck you had a chance to shoot. This
- 34:31Speaker 2: picture was taken I think maybe a couple years after
- 34:36Speaker 2: they the state implemented Antler point restrictions. In Pennsylvania's Antler
- 34:41Speaker 2: point restrictions aren't like.
- 34:43Speaker 4: With like Texas.
- 34:44Speaker 2: It's at the time it was most of the state
- 34:48Speaker 2: was three on one side, and this in northwestern Pennsylvania
- 34:53Speaker 2: it was three on one side plus a brow time
- 34:57Speaker 2: and a lot of guys were like very against this
- 35:03Speaker 2: new regulation at the time, but it really started paying
- 35:08Speaker 2: off quickly, Like you know, a percentage like of those
- 35:12Speaker 2: year and a half old bucks, a large percentage of
- 35:14Speaker 2: those year and a half old bucks that would have
- 35:17Speaker 2: gotten shot now had a chance to at least get
- 35:20Speaker 2: to another year. And now in Pennsylvania, like they're killing
- 35:25Speaker 2: big bucks, which was just not a thing that happened
- 35:27Speaker 2: very often when I was a kid. So yeah, that's
- 35:31Speaker 2: like my one and only nice big Pennsylvania buck there.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Nice.
- 35:36Speaker 6: The same thing happened in Texas where people were very
- 35:39Speaker 6: against the Antler restrictions.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 6: First and now you talk to pretty much everyone and
- 35:42Speaker 6: they say it was a good thing. Yeah, you know,
- 35:44Speaker 6: we're seeing a lot more big deer.
- 35:45Speaker 2: It works. Some places, it doesn't work others they've like
- 35:49Speaker 2: Colorado tried it with mule deer. It was just like
- 35:51Speaker 2: it didn't work, just like it was a failed experiment.
- 35:55Speaker 2: But like it's definitely worked in Pennsylvania. All right, Phil,
- 36:01Speaker 2: do we got some action in the chat?
- 36:03Speaker 3: Got a lot of action. Oh geez, I'm being less
- 36:06Speaker 3: picky about my questions here since getting so many complaints
- 36:10Speaker 3: about it.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Leland.
- 36:13Speaker 3: I've heard you ask this question, I think for a
- 36:14Speaker 3: month now, so I'm just gonna bring it up. Let's
- 36:16Speaker 3: get it out of the way. What are the functional
- 36:18Speaker 3: differences between alpaca and marino wool? If any, if any
- 36:21Speaker 3: of you can speak to this.
- 36:23Speaker 2: This question should be directed to the experts at first light.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Yeah, this sounds like yeah, why I question?
- 36:32Speaker 3: Sorry, Leland, thanks for being here.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Never tried out packa socks.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Here we go. Question for Randall and the chat regarding
- 36:40Speaker 3: hot dogs? Anyone made Venison hot dogs? Have you done this? Randall?
- 36:43Speaker 4: Tips?
- 36:44Speaker 5: If not? Steve and I were just talking yesterday about
- 36:47Speaker 5: making a video trying to make the best venison hot dog.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Yeah, close as I've come is making brats you do.
- 36:54Speaker 5: I mean, my understanding is that you do truly to
- 36:56Speaker 5: address the last sentence there. You do truly have to
- 36:59Speaker 5: emulsify it, just make it into goo. The tough thing
- 37:04Speaker 5: is going to be the snap. So we're we're discussing
- 37:07Speaker 5: that yesterday. You want a good, a good positive snap
- 37:10Speaker 5: on the dog. But we will hopefully address this in
- 37:15Speaker 5: a video at some point.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Cool uh Ian asks on the heels of the CLBD podcast,
- 37:21Speaker 3: how often do you guys get your deer and elk tested?
- 37:24Speaker 3: I get them all or there with signs on the animal,
- 37:28Speaker 3: cause I've just gone to get.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Them all tested.
- 37:30Speaker 7: Man.
- 37:33Speaker 2: And in some places, like where I'm gonna hunt in
- 37:35Speaker 2: Colorado this year, it's mandatory. In other places it's a voluntary.
- 37:42Speaker 2: But I've just like I got, I just get them
- 37:44Speaker 2: all tested.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Now, I just I test them when they're required. And
- 37:49Speaker 5: uh obviously like in Montana here we have big game
- 37:52Speaker 5: checkpoints and so they sort of catch you in a
- 37:55Speaker 5: funnel to track animals moving across the state. And so
- 37:59Speaker 5: at some of those still test, But yeah, I haven't.
- 38:03Speaker 5: I don't think I've ever voluntarily submitted something for testing.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah, if you had kids, proud of that, if you
- 38:10Speaker 2: had kids, you might.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Look at it.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Or if I valued my own health.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's not.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a joke. That's a joke.
- 38:18Speaker 2: I know, Jordan, you doing that down and those Texans
- 38:24Speaker 2: just care.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Well.
- 38:27Speaker 6: Our our CWD problem, you know, tends to be with
- 38:30Speaker 6: the breeding facilities.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Well, it's like that everywhere. I mean when you look
- 38:34Speaker 2: at like the spread a map from like the US
- 38:37Speaker 2: I think it's the USGS. Maybe it's fish and wildlife.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I don't know, but you can look at a map
- 38:42Speaker 2: and see where these outbreaks start and it's like almost
- 38:46Speaker 2: guarantee that in the center of that thing, Yeah, there's
- 38:49Speaker 2: a high fence.
- 38:50Speaker 6: Yeah, and there are I know, there are areas where
- 38:54Speaker 6: the wild population, you know, there is a problem, and
- 38:58Speaker 6: there may be mandatory testing there, but not where where
- 39:01Speaker 6: I'm hunting.
- 39:01Speaker 3: So, speaking of kids, question for Brody and Jordan. Adam's
- 39:07Speaker 3: taking a six year old daughter on her first hunt
- 39:08Speaker 3: this weekend, DIY blind in the woods. Do I let
- 39:10Speaker 3: her try and shoot or just sit and watch me
- 39:14Speaker 3: do it. I want to give her a good experience.
- 39:15Speaker 2: There's too many unknowns here, like has she practiced, has
- 39:19Speaker 2: she put in the time, does she want to? Does
- 39:24Speaker 2: she want to? Has she been exposed to it at
- 39:27Speaker 2: all yet?
- 39:30Speaker 3: I what hunt?
- 39:31Speaker 2: I'm assuming deer, but I don't know. I'm assuming it's
- 39:35Speaker 2: a deer from in my opinion, like you see a
- 39:40Speaker 2: lot of pictures of five six year old kids like
- 39:43Speaker 2: holding the buck up. In my opinion, it's a little
- 39:47Speaker 2: too early simply because they don't really know what they're doing.
- 39:51Speaker 2: They like don't understand it yet. It's not that you
- 39:55Speaker 2: can't set them up with a rifle that'll work and
- 39:57Speaker 2: stuff like that. So I would probably do the shooting
- 40:04Speaker 2: and see how she reacts if she hasn't had any
- 40:06Speaker 2: exposure to it yet.
- 40:09Speaker 6: Jordan, Yeah, no, I totally agree with that. And you know,
- 40:12Speaker 6: if you get something that's plenty of excitement for us, sure.
- 40:15Speaker 2: And walk walk through the skin and in the gut
- 40:18Speaker 2: and all like all that stuff tends to like as
- 40:21Speaker 2: long as you don't be like this is going to
- 40:23Speaker 2: be a little gross, like don't do any of that,
- 40:27Speaker 2: Just like do it, and they're probably going to be fascinated.
- 40:29Speaker 3: But yeah, Jackson asks, do you think the same arguments
- 40:33Speaker 3: against crossbows aka arrow guns, according to Rody, should be
- 40:37Speaker 3: applied to the use of TSS turkey loads and long
- 40:39Speaker 3: range rifles. Never used a crossbow, but I've always thought
- 40:42Speaker 3: that the hate was odd. I agree.
- 40:44Speaker 2: I don't get the hate. What's he talking about turkey loads?
- 40:51Speaker 4: Yeah, like the super No, Like there's.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Like no way. They're just like like you're arguing against
- 40:56Speaker 2: being more effective at killing turkeys, Like I don't. I
- 40:59Speaker 2: don't agree with that, and I don't think there's like
- 41:03Speaker 2: any possible way you could.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Like turn back the clock, turn back the clock.
- 41:09Speaker 2: And the long range rifles, it's like like I don't
- 41:13Speaker 2: see how you could even come up with an enforceable regulation.
- 41:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, the only thing, the only thing that
- 41:20Speaker 5: I'm familiar with is the Idaho restriction on you can't
- 41:26Speaker 5: have a rifle heavier than sixteen pounds. I had no idea,
- 41:28Speaker 5: and I do have a rifle that what doesn't mean
- 41:32Speaker 5: that Idaho right restriction?
- 41:34Speaker 4: Oh yeah, but no, I should really own rifle.
- 41:39Speaker 2: But I agree, like the arguments like against crossbows, like
- 41:42Speaker 2: I just don't get it. Like everybody's like, oh, this
- 41:44Speaker 2: sky's falling, all the deer are going to get killed. Like,
- 41:47Speaker 2: why you can go hunt elk with a crossbow as
- 41:49Speaker 2: far as I know in Wyoming during archery season and
- 41:53Speaker 2: like there hasn't been like any change there's and there's
- 41:57Speaker 2: still plenty of white tails where crossbows are eagle.
- 42:00Speaker 8: Like.
- 42:00Speaker 3: I don't get the.
- 42:01Speaker 6: Hate, but whatever.
- 42:03Speaker 5: Some some bow hunters, I'd rather that they have a crossbow,
- 42:06Speaker 5: sure for the sake of the animals.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I know there's people other people here at
- 42:13Speaker 2: Meteor that probably wouldn't agree.
- 42:15Speaker 4: With the cross both.
- 42:16Speaker 5: I started hunting with a crossbow because I didn't have
- 42:21Speaker 5: like an archery background. My parents didn't hunt, but I was.
- 42:26Speaker 5: They were encouraging and you could go out and get
- 42:28Speaker 5: a crossbow and you knew how to site it in
- 42:30Speaker 5: and yeah we're drilling deer at you know, fifty yards
- 42:33Speaker 5: and super effective.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Yeah what do you think?
- 42:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I agree, it's you know, fears of
- 42:41Speaker 6: all the deer being gone definitely overblown. I think if
- 42:44Speaker 6: you've spent you know, hours and hours trying to shoot
- 42:47Speaker 6: a compound bow accurately and then someone comes in with
- 42:51Speaker 6: the crossbow, I I do understand that, but you could
- 42:54Speaker 6: say the same.
- 42:55Speaker 2: You could say this like the trad bow guys could
- 42:57Speaker 2: say the same exact thing, like those pound guys. It's
- 43:00Speaker 2: so easy. They got sites and all. Like it's just
- 43:03Speaker 2: a never ending cascade of arguments method of take arguments
- 43:08Speaker 2: that end up just being horseshit.
- 43:09Speaker 6: As far as far as I'm concerned, Yeah, yeah, I
- 43:12Speaker 6: think the the whatever species population that should be the
- 43:16Speaker 6: first concern. Yeah, you know, and if that's not a concern,
- 43:19Speaker 6: it's maybe not worth getting two worked up about.
- 43:22Speaker 2: There you go anymore fail.
- 43:24Speaker 3: I mean, we've had a lot of it. Let's do
- 43:25Speaker 3: one more than save the rest for the end of
- 43:27Speaker 3: the show, and then any additional one. Since the publishing
- 43:30Speaker 3: team is here, when is meat Eater going to come
- 43:32Speaker 3: out with a book made for babies?
- 43:34Speaker 2: I don't I don't think you're gonna see that. Never
- 43:37Speaker 2: say never. Maybe Jordan will write one. Oh you're still
- 43:42Speaker 2: having babies?
- 43:43Speaker 6: We have a one and a two year old, man.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm like way past that point.
- 43:50Speaker 8: Man.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I don't even remember what it was like for my kids.
- 43:52Speaker 4: To be babies.
- 43:54Speaker 5: And and I'll just put out there that we know
- 43:57Speaker 5: what books were writing until till we die.
- 44:01Speaker 4: At this point.
- 44:01Speaker 2: So yeah, not something i'd count on, right. All right,
- 44:08Speaker 2: we're all done with those film.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Well unless you want to keep going, but we can.
- 44:12Speaker 3: We've got the end of this time, is it. We're
- 44:14Speaker 3: running a little long.
- 44:15Speaker 2: So let's move on to our next interview. All right, everybody.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Our next guest is Tyler Freele, who is a writer
- 44:24Speaker 2: for Outdoor Life and he hosts his own podcast called
- 44:28Speaker 2: Tundra Talk. And if you didn't catch Tyler on the
- 44:31Speaker 2: Meat Eater podcast, we had him on AK I don't
- 44:34Speaker 2: know a year like this morning season I think yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 2: episode five oh six, you can you can check it out.
- 44:41Speaker 2: And if you're not familiar with his work, just like
- 44:44Speaker 2: Jordan Siller's here, he has a wealth of knowledge about
- 44:47Speaker 2: firearms and rifle cartridges in particular, and that's mostly what
- 44:52Speaker 2: we're gonna chat about with him today. Tyler, you on
- 44:56Speaker 2: the line, buddy, Yeah, I think so great. Thanks for
- 45:00Speaker 2: joining us from up and up in Fairbanks, Alaska.
- 45:05Speaker 8: I'm in I'm in Wyoming right now.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Oh man, what do you hunt?
- 45:10Speaker 7: What do you.
- 45:12Speaker 8: I shot a nice antelope yesterday.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Great, I'm about to do that in a week or
- 45:16Speaker 2: so before we get into shooting. Great, big animals with
- 45:20Speaker 2: teeny little rifle cartes. How'd your moose hunt go?
- 45:23Speaker 8: Uh, it was pretty disappointing this year.
- 45:26Speaker 2: That's funny because I heard the same from from other people.
- 45:30Speaker 2: It was tough hunt this year up there.
- 45:33Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I don't people like to blame it
- 45:35Speaker 8: on a lot of things. We we spent fourteen days hunting,
- 45:38Speaker 8: and the first ten days are kind of in the
- 45:41Speaker 8: prime time, and where we hunt, we have to call them.
- 45:43Speaker 8: We're just in this swop that you can't there's a
- 45:46Speaker 8: couple of spots we can see.
- 45:47Speaker 2: But you hunt out of a elevated stand, don't you.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:51Speaker 8: We we got a big tripod so you can get
- 45:54Speaker 8: up over the brush. Otherwise you just just can't see anything. Yeah,
- 45:58Speaker 8: And uh, the first ten days basically, you know, we hunt,
- 46:02Speaker 8: you know, five six hours in the morning and five
- 46:05Speaker 8: six hours in the evening usually, and every time we
- 46:08Speaker 8: went and called, we heard multiple bulls. They just would
- 46:11Speaker 8: not they just would not come.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:14Speaker 2: So, as in Alaskan who hunts like like that, getting
- 46:18Speaker 2: that moose every year is I'm assuming, kind of important. So, like,
- 46:22Speaker 2: how's your winter meat supply looking? And what are you
- 46:24Speaker 2: going to do to make up for not getting a bull.
- 46:28Speaker 8: Well, I'm I think I'm sitting okay for now, we
- 46:32Speaker 8: do depend on it, but I like having a little
- 46:34Speaker 8: bit of a surplus just the way. You know, I
- 46:37Speaker 8: usually killed a bowl every year, and so we at
- 46:40Speaker 8: least the the size of my children. Now we aren't
- 46:43Speaker 8: consuming the whole thing every year. Oh yeah, we got
- 46:46Speaker 8: We've got a fair bit of moose. And then I've
- 46:47Speaker 8: got about three to four hundred pounds of black bear meat.
- 46:52Speaker 8: There you go, easier that, you know, I make into
- 46:56Speaker 8: various Yeah, you.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Guys really get after those bears.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Man.
- 47:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I I I don't know what I love. I
- 47:04Speaker 8: I love just kill bears, like I'm a.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Well, it sounds like you'll make it through the winter
- 47:11Speaker 2: without starving. What what I really wanted to have you
- 47:15Speaker 2: on today to talk about is is I feel like
- 47:18Speaker 2: you've got like a very realistic take on the effect
- 47:23Speaker 2: the effectiveness of what many hunters, not all, but a
- 47:28Speaker 2: fair amount of hunters considered to be like undersized, underpowered
- 47:33Speaker 2: rifle cartridges for big game animals. Like I've kind of
- 47:39Speaker 2: always found the hate from like the Magnum, the Magnum
- 47:45Speaker 2: crowd for like the six or five creed more in
- 47:47Speaker 2: particular to be frankly kind of stupid. I've killed a
- 47:52Speaker 2: pile of deering out with six or five creed more
- 47:54Speaker 2: and I have nothing but good things to say about
- 47:57Speaker 2: it's it's effectiveness. What you know, a lot of white
- 48:02Speaker 2: tail and antelope hunters that they aren't strangers to use
- 48:06Speaker 2: in smaller rifle cartridges. But you know, you've taken it
- 48:10Speaker 2: a step further and proven that these smaller cartridges are
- 48:14Speaker 2: capable of like cleanly killing everything from from bears to moose. So, like,
- 48:20Speaker 2: talk us through how you got to that point, Like
- 48:22Speaker 2: how and why you became kind of like whatever you
- 48:25Speaker 2: want to call a small cartridge evangelist.
- 48:28Speaker 8: Yeah, and whether whether it's by my own choice or
- 48:32Speaker 8: not to to that's I guess, I guess where I'm at.
- 48:35Speaker 7: I I grew up.
- 48:36Speaker 8: I grew up in southern Colorado for the most part,
- 48:38Speaker 8: and you know, it was a lot of twenty five
- 48:41Speaker 8: ought six stuff. But even after I moved to Alaska,
- 48:45Speaker 8: you know, I I started out with a thirty hot
- 48:48Speaker 8: six I'd bought and killed just about everything with it,
- 48:51Speaker 8: and then I quickly got really into sheep hunting and
- 48:55Speaker 8: a lot of twenty five ought six So I just
- 48:56Speaker 8: started shooting everything with that, and uh, you know, family
- 49:00Speaker 8: over over many years of hunting up there. You know,
- 49:03Speaker 8: my uncle always swore that the two forty three Winchester
- 49:05Speaker 8: is one of the best black bear guns, and it
- 49:08Speaker 8: just killed piles and piles of black bears with it,
- 49:11Speaker 8: and it was just kind of something that I just
- 49:13Speaker 8: took as a matter of fact, you know, kill a
- 49:15Speaker 8: moose with my twenty five ought six or you know
- 49:17Speaker 8: whatever I was using, and you know, in the six
- 49:22Speaker 8: or five creed More is kind of its own thing.
- 49:24Speaker 8: I was shooting competitively across the course student service rifle
- 49:28Speaker 8: when that was introduced, and I kind of thought that
- 49:31Speaker 8: sounds like it'd be a good cheap cartridge. And right,
- 49:33Speaker 8: a couple of years later, when the first rifle, the
- 49:36Speaker 8: first hunting rifle was public was released in it by Ruger.
- 49:40Speaker 8: I got one and shot a sheep with it and
- 49:42Speaker 8: with a match bullet, and that's cool shots and blacktail
- 49:45Speaker 8: deer and kind of moved on. And it was you know,
- 49:49Speaker 8: once this six' Five creedmore got, popular you, know then
- 49:52Speaker 8: there was this kind of vitriol and responsive hate to,
- 49:54Speaker 8: it WHICH i understand a lot of. It that a
- 49:57Speaker 8: lot of the annoyance because there are you, know, know
- 50:00Speaker 8: quite have been quite a few fairly ignorant opinions on you,
- 50:04Speaker 8: know saying that it can do things it can't do
- 50:06Speaker 8: right or shouldn't really be used. FOR i mean that's
- 50:10Speaker 8: kind of WHERE i got to Where i'm. At and,
- 50:12Speaker 8: then you, know over the last you, know we've all
- 50:15Speaker 8: seen over the last few, years just the advancement in
- 50:18Speaker 8: some of these smaller caliber you, know heavy for heavy
- 50:21Speaker 8: for caliber projectiles that are super efficient buck the wind really.
- 50:26Speaker 8: Well and So i've started kind of getting further and
- 50:30Speaker 8: further And i'm not afraid IF i If i'm do
- 50:33Speaker 8: my researching and convinced something will, work, Okay i'm not
- 50:36Speaker 8: afraid to try. It. Right so, far the results have
- 50:38Speaker 8: been like really really pleasing and and since, starting you,
- 50:43Speaker 8: know since working full time for outdoor, LIFE i, mean
- 50:46Speaker 8: MY i, SHOOT i shoot a ridiculous, amount and it's
- 50:52Speaker 8: just kind of just solidified a lot of points THAT
- 50:55Speaker 8: i think a lot of, times you, know we focus
- 50:57Speaker 8: on things like cartridge when when there are a lot
- 50:59Speaker 8: more important things that are going to contribute to our.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Success one THING i wanted to ask, you, Like i'm
- 51:08Speaker 2: kind of curious how you feel like when you're using
- 51:11Speaker 2: say a six five creed more even smaller cartridge and
- 51:16Speaker 2: you're shooting like larger game animals maybe not like white
- 51:19Speaker 2: tails or you, know antelope or something like. That like
- 51:23Speaker 2: how big of a role do you feel like bullet
- 51:25Speaker 2: selection is playing like to be effective and and and
- 51:32Speaker 2: like has like advancement and bullet technology like really made
- 51:36Speaker 2: it possible for these, newer smaller caliber cartridges to play
- 51:41Speaker 2: a role in big game. Hunting, YEAH i think.
- 51:44Speaker 8: It plays a. ROLE i think it's kind of raised
- 51:46Speaker 8: THE i think it's kind of raised the bar over you,
- 51:50Speaker 8: know the capability overall has. Increased they've always been effective
- 51:54Speaker 8: in some. WAYS i mean even in the early nineteen,
- 51:57Speaker 8: hundreds you, Know Frank Frank glazer was killing moose with
- 51:59Speaker 8: a two two swift and claimed it was the killed
- 52:02Speaker 8: everything you, know with just these super crappy forty eight green.
- 52:05Speaker 8: Bullets and SO i think that that bullet manufacturer has
- 52:13Speaker 8: bullet technology has really contributed to. That and also it's
- 52:18Speaker 8: it's made it easier to, hit you, know it's made
- 52:20Speaker 8: it easier to shoot. Accurately, yeah.
- 52:23Speaker 2: And, yeah we're past the days of like round Nose
- 52:28Speaker 2: remington core locks that.
- 52:29Speaker 8: Everybody, Yeah and one you, know one thing like the
- 52:33Speaker 8: heavier for caliber bullets are so much. LONGER i DON'T
- 52:38Speaker 8: i don't play into sectional density too, much but you
- 52:42Speaker 8: know you get a much longer core of lead even
- 52:44Speaker 8: in these expanding bullets that that you'll get better penetration than,
- 52:48Speaker 8: say you, know an older or like a larger caliber
- 52:51Speaker 8: bullet of the same weight that's all. Shorter and that's
- 52:54Speaker 8: just one little. Factor and try to get too far
- 52:57Speaker 8: in the weeds on.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Sure, yeah we want to keep bit. Simple do you
- 53:01Speaker 2: guys have any any questions For?
- 53:03Speaker 4: Tyler, YEAH i guess.
- 53:07Speaker 5: You're shooting primarily match bullets or real frangible.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Bullets, uh these Times i've been.
- 53:15Speaker 8: Shoot i've been shooting more particularly like the The hornet
- 53:19Speaker 8: to YELD m. Bullets BUT i, mean, honest, like IF
- 53:23Speaker 8: i had to just, pick you, know one of my
- 53:25Speaker 8: favorite bullets, overall it's that YELD, x which is it's
- 53:28Speaker 8: it's not quite AS i and even saying frangible AS
- 53:32Speaker 8: i don't know that THAT'S i wouldn't say that that's
- 53:34Speaker 8: a really really accurate but it is a more rigidly,
- 53:37Speaker 8: constructed constructed. Bullet heavier jacket and there's a locking ring
- 53:40Speaker 8: in the jacket that they are going to tend to
- 53:42Speaker 8: hold together a little, better but you still get really
- 53:45Speaker 8: good rapid expansion and and. Performance SO i MEAN i
- 53:49Speaker 8: would say that that that style of bullet is probably my. Favorite.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Yeah, still, YEAH i always Get i'm always. CONFUSED i
- 53:59Speaker 4: GUESS i don't.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Know it strikes me as sort of strange that people
- 54:01Speaker 5: talk so much about cartridges and then they don't talk
- 54:04Speaker 5: about bullets and bullet. Construction, yeah because the only thing
- 54:08Speaker 5: when you're killing an animal that the question is like
- 54:10Speaker 5: what work that bullet does on that animal's? Tissue and
- 54:13Speaker 5: that's like what is the bullet made out? Of how
- 54:15Speaker 5: fast does it hit? It and does it hit it
- 54:16Speaker 5: where you want to hit it? Right and like none
- 54:19Speaker 5: of that is really you can do, It like depending
- 54:23Speaker 5: on whatever the head stamp, is you can do a.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Lot you can do a lot of different things and
- 54:28Speaker 5: end up with a lot of different wounds on an.
- 54:29Speaker 5: Animal but the bullet is, really, like to my, mind
- 54:33Speaker 5: the most important part of the.
- 54:34Speaker 8: Equation, yeah AND i THINK i think you hit the
- 54:37Speaker 8: nail on the. HEAD i, mean that's we are kind
- 54:40Speaker 8: of you, know as a whole a lot of hunters
- 54:42Speaker 8: tend to make whether it's just the way we're brought
- 54:46Speaker 8: up in. It you, know we think cartridge, power kinetic,
- 54:49Speaker 8: energy where you know what your bullet construction and what's
- 54:54Speaker 8: your impact velocity going to, be you, know because there
- 54:57Speaker 8: are people that have done stuff that's you, know kind
- 54:58Speaker 8: of stupid with the six to five creed. More but
- 55:01Speaker 8: if you if you stay within a reasonable impact velocity,
- 55:05Speaker 8: range you, know where you could still shoot really well
- 55:08Speaker 8: and hit what you need. To they like it's it
- 55:10Speaker 8: shouldn't surprise anyone that it. Works, right you poke a
- 55:13Speaker 8: couple holes.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Through their, lungs they're going to die pretty. Quick, jordan
- 55:16Speaker 2: you got anything For?
- 55:17Speaker 1: Tyler?
- 55:18Speaker 6: YEAH i guess one of the things you hear, from you,
- 55:21Speaker 6: know the folks who want to use the more Powerful
- 55:23Speaker 6: magnum cartridges is you, KNOW i want to dump as
- 55:26Speaker 6: much energy into the animal as, possible maybe induce hydrostatic.
- 55:30Speaker 6: Shock so it just kind of falls down right.
- 55:32Speaker 3: There what do you what?
- 55:34Speaker 6: Is where do you stand on that sort of?
- 55:37Speaker 8: ARGUMENT i would say that it's it's kind of a
- 55:41Speaker 8: misconception or not like a poor understanding of a you,
- 55:44Speaker 8: know what you should expect when you shoot an animal
- 55:47Speaker 8: and you, know just the capabilities or or like terminal ballistics,
- 55:51Speaker 8: itself because animals react totally. Differently And i've heard this
- 55:56Speaker 8: and whether it's framed IS i want more margin for?
- 55:59Speaker 8: Error but, well what does? That what does that really?
- 56:01Speaker 8: Mean and you Know i've heard, people you, know because
- 56:05Speaker 8: talking about shoot even shooting. Moose it's, well if they
- 56:08Speaker 8: soak this, up then this other cartridge isn't going to.
- 56:10Speaker 8: Work well that's just a poor understanding of what we
- 56:14Speaker 8: should expect from the animal because there's a variety of
- 56:18Speaker 8: reactions and the only thing you can really control is.
- 56:21Speaker 8: Putting you, know using a bullet's going to put a you,
- 56:24Speaker 8: know an acquate size hole through that thing's vitals and
- 56:27Speaker 8: placing it, accurately and the animal is going to. Die
- 56:29Speaker 8: it might it might drop in its you. Know the
- 56:31Speaker 8: ANTELOPE i shot yesterday folded like a lawn. Chair and
- 56:34Speaker 8: THEN i watched another one with a bullet that was
- 56:37Speaker 8: did some you know more damage to, it shot perfectly
- 56:39Speaker 8: and it didn't fall over for fifteen or twenty, seconds,
- 56:42Speaker 8: yeah you, know and and both were both were perfect.
- 56:45Speaker 8: Shots you, know it's just the. Result results will, vary
- 56:49Speaker 8: and you, know a lot of times we we, have you,
- 56:52Speaker 8: know a spectacular result or what we interpret is that
- 56:55Speaker 8: and we don't you, know it's it's a small sample
- 56:57Speaker 8: size that kind of falls within a wide range of.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Possibilities all, right let's, uh let's speaking to. Results if
- 57:06Speaker 2: any of you are still doubting like What tyler is
- 57:10Speaker 2: saying about the capabilities of some of these these smaller bore,
- 57:15Speaker 2: CARTRIDGES i want you to check out a video that
- 57:19Speaker 2: he made last year when he killed you, know In,
- 57:21Speaker 2: alaska you come bull moose is probably like sixteen pounds
- 57:25Speaker 2: with it was with a twenty two Arc, Tyler is that?
- 57:28Speaker 3: Right?
- 57:29Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah and yep eighty Eight and all right.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Enough nerd Out. Randall before you chime in to like
- 57:42Speaker 2: talk trash about how this plays, OUT i want you
- 57:45Speaker 2: to first think about. THIS i killed An alaska bull
- 57:49Speaker 2: moose last year with a three hundred win mag and
- 57:53Speaker 2: it took three good hits to put that bull. Down
- 57:56Speaker 2: so like keep that in mind as you're watching what
- 58:00Speaker 2: this this. Video, phil you can go ahead and roll
- 58:02Speaker 2: roll the tape, Here, Okay.
- 58:04Speaker 3: I'm ready whenever if you got to clear, shot oh.
- 58:11Speaker 4: A lot of, brush you don't want to do it.
- 58:22Speaker 1: He's.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Done it sounds like my boy's hunting.
- 58:25Speaker 5: Squirrels he's down or, no he's standing there.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Now like this this is kind of What i'm talking,
- 58:45Speaker 2: About like before you chime in talking, trash he's getting
- 58:55Speaker 2: woozy and there he. Goes so no matter what you
- 59:02Speaker 2: or me, Say, tyler, like there's gonna be some grumpy
- 59:05Speaker 2: haters that would be like you had to shoot them three.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Times it took forever for him to tip. Over but
- 59:11Speaker 2: like with a big bull, moose that's not unusual with
- 59:15Speaker 2: a with a, great big caliber because it's a huge
- 59:18Speaker 2: animal and it just takes them a long time to bleed, out,
- 59:21Speaker 2: Right so So i've got to believe that like part
- 59:26Speaker 2: of the advantage in the situation you were just in
- 59:29Speaker 2: is that you were able to like bear like stay
- 59:32Speaker 2: on target and like get real quick accurate follow up
- 59:37Speaker 2: shots because you're just like not dealing with. Recoil, right, yeah,
- 59:41Speaker 2: No and you, know and that was that was a
- 59:43Speaker 2: gas gun and the first.
- 59:45Speaker 8: Shot and in the funny thing is like, say if
- 59:48Speaker 8: if you shoot something more than once with a small,
- 59:50Speaker 8: cartridge you know it was it wasn't enough. Gun but
- 59:52Speaker 8: if you shoot them more than once with a big.
- 59:54Speaker 8: Cartridge they're, tough, right you, Know like the first shot
- 59:59Speaker 8: at the first shot was perfectly through both, lungs and
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: that you, know it may it's only it's all. Speculation
- 1:00:05Speaker 8: he may have gone another fifty, yards, right you, know
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: but just based on as one of the REASONS i
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: chose to do that is Because i've quite a bit
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: of experience with how moose, die you, know the situations
- 1:00:15Speaker 8: that we're shooting him in, there and, felt you, know
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: obviously confident enough to try, it and, uh you, know
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: and and actually getting the the second shot where he.
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: Turned it hit him unfortunately in the hind, quarter but
- 1:00:29Speaker 8: you know all you, know making limit lemonade out of.
- 1:00:31Speaker 8: Lemons it was pretty imp like that bullet went through
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: ten inches of meat and then she completely shattered the
- 1:00:37Speaker 8: femur and was ended up, somewhere ended up somewhere in the.
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: Guts but the first and third shot were both both
- 1:00:43Speaker 8: through the, lungs and, yeah it was.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Impressive. Man all, right we're we're we're gonna have to
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: to move on to our next, Segment, tyler but thanks
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: for joining. Us stay in. Touch it's like probably almost
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: winter up there in Fair. Banks i'd imagine it's getting.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Close SO i have a great fall and winner up
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: up there and we'll talk to, you talk to you another.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: Time that sounds.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: Great all, right thanks a, Lot Thanks, Tyler, yeah thank.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: You, okay our next, section next. Segment, again if you didn't,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: realize it's white tail week here At Meat, Eater and
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: since everyone loves just kicking back and talking, hunting shooting
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: the breeze about, hunting which is SOMETHING i think we
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: should do more of on this, show and so so
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: does the HONEST i think we're gonna have a little
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: chat about what our dream white tail hunt With beat would. Be, so,
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: boys do you got, like do you already have like
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: a bucket list white tail hunting mind or is this
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: something that you had to like really stop and think.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: ABOUT i, MEAN i.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: Feel Like I'm i'm still trying to figure it out
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: In East texas a little. Bit BUT i would love
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: to go do a western white tail. HUNT i grew
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: up In virginia and now In East. Texas We west
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: is big. Man you got to pick a, Spot, well
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: what would you recommend for The? Montana if you like white,
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: tails there you. Go, Yeah i'd love to do. That
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: just getting out of the tree. Stand you, know it's it's.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: It's what you.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Got there's plenty of opportunity for that, HEREAH i, Mean
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: wyoming's got some good whitetail. Hunting colorado like has some
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: giant white tail box but they're most they're almost all
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: in the eastern half of the, state and it's almost
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: all private land right, Right like if you want to
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: do a public land, hunt it'd be hard for me
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: to pick somewhere other Than. Montana, yeah, YEAH i mean
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: that that just sounds great getting to see that, landscape walk,
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: around do a rifle.
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: Hunt it'd be a lot of.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: FUN i had to think about this a little.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: BIT i don't necessarily know that their bucket list bucket list.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: HUNT a bucket list hunt for me would be like
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: going to the most exclusive white tail property that has
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: the biggest bucks and shooting. It but the one Hunt
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: i've always wanted to do just been fascinated, by is
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: uh doing like a North woods.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Tracking in the, snow like like like In.
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: Maine you know you see some of, Those just LIKE
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: i just think that's that would be sort of the,
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: coolest most mind expanding the.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Atonics and, like oh, yeah it super. COOL i think
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: like low deer densities like tracking a.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Buck, yeah wear a wool, hat carry a lever.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: Gun, yep, yeah, yep very.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: Cool, YEAH i like that.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: Idea mine would be something like it's like totally out
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: of my my comfort zone and like hunting. STYLE i would,
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: like this is SOMETHING i would like mentally have a
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: tough time, with But i'd still want to do. It
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: which is uh one of Those saskatchewan hunts where you're
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: sitting in a blind and it's like minus ten degrees
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: but you're hunting during the, rut and like you're hunting
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: for these like three hundred plus pound white, Tails like
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: they'll have like one hundred and fifty inch rack and
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: it looks small because the deer just so. GIANT i
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: think that would be a super cool. Experience it would
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: like be, miserable but it would be cool.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: Too.
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: Yeah, NO i think one of the cool things about
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: white tails is there's just so many different.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Ways, yeah you can do, it that's, yeah like pick a,
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: Spot stans.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: Drives i've also been really intriguing WHENEVER i see an
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: image of a white tail deer in a canoe.
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: Gives me a little something in my.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Brain, yeah definitely, definitely a water based hunt would be real. Cool, Okay,
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Phil let's let's jump back into the. Chat is everyone
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: talking about white tails or guns or.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: What there's a lot of gun talk during during The
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Tyler real. Conversation not a lot of, questions though there's.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: There you, KNOW i love this chat because they just
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: talk amongst themselves and share info and opinions and they're
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: all very kind about. It you guys. Rock but we
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: do have a lot a lot of questions. Still this
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: is From harrison and he, says question for the, crew
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: do do you use a packable game sled for deer and?
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Elk if, so which one do you? Recommend he's right
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: rifle elk hunting this year and wants to use.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Honey you should ask, That, Like i'm gonna be trying
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: one out this. Year Hopefully i'll get the opportunity to
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: try out a packable. Sled i've used sleds in the,
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: past mostly for, elk but like the ice fishing sled
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: type things like where you shoot it then go back
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: to get the sled and then bring it out and
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: use it to pack the animal out the. Quarters out
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: of whether we had to do that with my kids
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: elk last, Year So i'm, Like i'm definitely interested in
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: the roll up sleds or packable.
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: Sleds.
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: Yeah i've For Sydney's. Bison we used like a pelican,
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: sled like a big ice fishing. Sled i've used an
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Orange it's like a burlier kids. Sled, yeah and the
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: roll up ones are like, no like an actual like like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: yeah and that has BEEN i had one miserable experience with.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: It and one, experience man is.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Like when you're running that kind of, sled like the
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: snow condition's got to be just right for it to.
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: Work.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: WELL i feel like if you if you count on
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: packing it out in a, sled you're kind of setting
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: yourself up For like it's a nice thing to have
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: if the conditions are, right but like.
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: There's there's something that's just.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: Really straightforward ABOUT i will put this on my back
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: and carry it right right because because OFTENTIMES i feel
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: like the sled can be way more work than just
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: carrying it.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Out, yeah and certain snow, conditions for, SURE i.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: Agree good luck to, You.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: Harrison imagine you're not using a sledge too, much.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Is or.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Snow i've never heard of.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: THIS i do LIKE i do like using for like
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: a winter backpack.
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Hunt i'll pull a sled behind, Me AND i do
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: like if you just if you're putting like thirty pounds
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: in it that you're not going to have in your,
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: backpack that's that's.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Nice but, yeah AND i think there are situations where it.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Doesn't even with some of these packable, sleds you could
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: probably pull it off without. Snow in the right like,
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: landscape you could still use a sled where the slide slide.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: It, yeah so hopefully that answers the.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: Question this one's very funny to, me AND i don't
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: know if it means. Anything we can just move on
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: if it. Doesn't rashad, says last WEEK i did an
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: expensive fishing.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Charter was there cheap fishing?
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Charters that's a good. Point we limited out and the
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: captain told me to leave one of our. FISH i
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: thought he was, joking but he took one out of my.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Bag never discussed, beforehand thoughts that's not.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Cool, YEAH i mean it's not that he should Have
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Captain price should have said something. Advanced but like if
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: you're walking out of there with just like A i
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: don't know what they're fishing for what the limit. Was you,
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: KNOW i don't got a problem with leaving the guy
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: a fish necessarily if it was like done in a
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: rude way where like give me one of.
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: Those things OR i, MEAN i think like it comes
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: down to if you really if it was a, question,
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: yeah and he's, Like i'd appreciate a.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Fish you're not stepping off my.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: YEAH i MEAN i had, people.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Had people give me some of their fish if they
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: didn't want to take you, home and BUT i didn't
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: ask people for.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: It there's also situations where the captain's going to fish
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: and give you his, fish right, Right, SO i mean
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: again LIKE i don't know the details.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: HERE i don't like.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: It thanks for shot, Great, jordan Says. Phil if you
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: don't bring up The randall's di y chili dogs at
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: the football, game it will be a. TRAVESTY i told.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: So this is about a new Real randall posted On
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: instagram where one of the new reel he brought a
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: zip lock bag full of. CHILI i don't know you, Guys,
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: okay if you have not seen, this just go To Randall's.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: Instagram it is it is obscene behavior From.
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: Randall it's.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: MISSING i was really hoping BECAUSE i looked up all
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: the rags on getting stuff in. THERE i was kind
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: of THINKING i was gonna have to stash, it you,
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: know like.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: A like keep it warm in your, rocket bring it
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: into the.
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: MOVIE i feel like a gatory bottle of liquor tucked
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: into your, pants like we used to do at The bengals.
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: Games but, no if you have food that you want
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: to bring, in it's totally, fine and it abides by
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: the NFL's bag. Policy you just fit it in a
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: gallon sized. Baggie and SO i was really hoping THAT
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: i would have a confrontation and THEN i could pull
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: out my phone Where i'd screenshoted the rules and SAID
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: i know my.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: Rights but that didn't. Happen the.
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: Infiltration was actually very anti, climatic But i'm glad you enjoyed.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: It, NONETHELESS i enjoyed. IT i tickled myself with.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: That colin's wondering what piece of first like year is
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: the crew's favorite for cold Late midwestern elite season archery.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Hunts you got a guy From texas who hunts when
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: it's never cold and, rarely got two other guys who
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: don't hunt cold late season archery. HUNTS i don't like
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: sitting still AND i don't hunt from tree stands too,
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: much BUT i would imagine like going with a bib
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: system is the way.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: To go for that. SITUATION I i got to look
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: up the name of this.
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: Jacket, yeah as a bad uh insulated bibs as a bad,
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: person and some great.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Big warm jacket that you can still drop bow.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: With, yeah there's a Fleece jesus is.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: Embarrassing they just didn't pick the right uh like white
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: tail experts for this.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: Show, Randall, NO i, KNOW i know there's a fleece
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: jacket that's got like a like a windbreaker player in,
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: it AND i can't find it r at the. Moment
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: but that thing is incredibly and yeah it's, fleece so
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: it's very, quiet like it's shockingly. Warm it's probably one
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: of my favorite jackets that just.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: Wear go On First light's website and just go to
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: like the white tail section and they'll have like cold weather.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Gear you'll find some good stuff.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: There.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Yep, Sorry i'm bad at this, Selling.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: Cody this IS i guess, general just traveling with meat
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: tips and things to keep in mind for getting my
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: access deer cape and meat home From. Hawaii humble. Brag
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: BUT i guess if you guys have any sort of
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: tips about flying With i've.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Not flown with a, cape but like you're probably gonna
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: want to like get it frozen and keep it. Frozen
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: that's a good. Question would you salt a cape before traveling.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: With it TO? I, POSSIBLY i don't have a kind
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: of experienced.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Phil you're just picking really, bad like difficult questions for us.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Today the meat's, easy freeze it and keep it. COLD
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: i would think the same thing for the. Cape and
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: there might be like call attacks at irmis and they'll
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: tell you like if you want to assault it or.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Whatever, YEAH i don't know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: That WHEN i flew back From alaska with my, BEAR
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: i don't know that we salted it and you couldn't
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: freeze it because they had to check. It, yeah well
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: you froze it like a thaw and then we threw
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: it in the freezer again at the.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Hotel but, Yeah, brodie it's either these questions or the
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: ones about video games AND d AND. D i'm trying
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: to spare you from the.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Questions JUST i feel like we're like just not like
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: these people are going to be disappointed with our.
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: Answers, well it sounds like a you.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: Problem oh let's see, here you're picking.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Them oh, yeah some. Brad i'm late late in, life
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: first time hunter at thirty. Five i've listened and watched
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: you guys for years and read a bunch of huge
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: part of me wants to test myself and go alone
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: versus going with anyone. Else go.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Alone, yeah, like you will learn so much by hunting.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Alone you might you might fail where you otherwise might
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: succeed if you had someone who knows more than. You but,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: like go hunt. Alone that's All i'm gonna.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: Say it depends on what you're. DOING i, think like
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: if you're doing if you're doing a wilderness type hunt
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: you have to.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Or.
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: ANYTHING i guess like it depends on how you do
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: being by yourself doing.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Something it could be tough in an entire, day for,
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: sure if you're.
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: Going to struggle without someone and not be able to
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: keep your head in the. Game, uh you, know find
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: a buddy or find a. Mentor but if you're if
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: you're you know yourself and you know that you can
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: handle that sort of, thing go for.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: It, Yeah LIKE i, MEAN i don't know if he's
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: saying go alone for the first. First it does say
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: late in my FIRST.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: I think the implication is that it would be his
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: first time going.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Out, oh THEN i retract my, answer go with someone
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: else the first couple of, times but don't be afraid
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: to go out hunt by.
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: Yourself the chalice. Jacket there you, go the chalice. Jacket
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: to sort of clean up one of our earlier. Misses
